How to dip-dye fabric

Dip Dye Technique

How to add colour to a selected area of natural fabric.

1) Wearing rubber gloves, empty contents of one sachet fabric dye (we recommend using Dylon Fabric Dye for Hand Use – follow the instructions on the packet) and add 250g salt. Dissolve in 2 litres of warm water.

2) Dip the parts of the garment you wish to dye into the solution and leave for 15 minutes. Some fabric may absorb dye above the solution line by up to 3cm.

3) Remove from dye. Hang up the fabric to drip dry, protecting the floor below with a plastic covering.

NB: To ensure the dyed area of the fabric doesn't run, DYLON® advise that the dyed area is rinsed thoroughly in running water so as much loose dye as possible is removed before washing in detergent. To prevent colour-run, we would recommend hand-washing the fabric in cold water for the first few washes.
