Innovation Award

WINNER: ISTANBUL COLLECTION
Designed by Ross Lovegrove for VitrA
Price from £600 to £9,000, C P Hart
Contact www.vitra-istanbulcollection.com

An industrial designer who has created household objects including computers and water bottles, Ross Lovegrove describes himself as Captain Organic, because of his love of form as it relates to practical, everyday products. Well-known for his talent for combining sculptural shapes with sophisticated technology and materials, he was asked by VitrA to design its new bathroom collection. While researching these designs, he immersed himself in Turkish ceramic culture, drawing inspiration from architecture, calligraphy and Ottoman geometry in order to create patterns for printed products, panels and screens.

The resulting Istanbul collection includes over 100 products, but what caught the judges' eye was the unique free-standing wash basin, which until now had been considered impossible to manufacture. However, by working together, VitrA and Ross Lovegrove have created a basin that appears to be a single seamless ceramic structure and in doing so have changed the face of bathroom design for ever.
