The idea of being able to control a light with the movement of your hand captured the imagination of the judging panel. Moreover, they felt that Shin and Tomoko Azumi's inspired idea not only combines simplicity of form with cutting-edge technology, but also represents a genuine innovation in domestic design that is sure to set a trend. Originally from Japan, the Azumis trained at the Royal College of Art in London and now live and work in Britain. They are better known for their sleek furniture that combines clean shapes with beautiful materials – this is their first lighting design and it looks set to become one of their most celebrated.

Living Kitchen range
The Living Kitchen range is the result of a collaboration between cookery writer and journalist Nigella Lawson and product designer Sebastian Conran. Judges praised the pair for their success in creating everyday objects – that range from mixing bowls to chopping boards – that are a pleasure to use and add a sleek glamour to the kitchen. Better still, they don't rely on unnecessary styling or gimmickry to set themselves apart – just good looks, ergonomic design and high-quality materials. All of these are qualities that encapsulate the spirit of the Classic Design Awards.
