Winner David Mellor
Few designers have succeeded in combining ground-breaking aesthetic vision with an intimate knowledge of the manufacturing process as effortlessly as
David Mellor. Born in Sheffield in 1930, he displayed creative abilities from an early age, which led him to Sheffield Art School and, later, to the Royal College of Art in London. Although grounded in the craftsmanship of traditional metalwork, he was also drawn by the new creative mood of post-war Britain, which inspired him to breathe new life into the staid world of cutlery with beautiful designs in affordable materials. His student project, Pride, remains a bestseller half a century later. The success of more recent designs, such as
Minimal and
City (a winner of the 1999 Classic Design Awards), demonstrates that Mellor's creativity remains undiminished.
While his London shop, selling kitchenware and cutlery, and the purpose-built factory in Derbyshire have made him a household name, he also has enjoyed an enviable – if less widely known – reputation as an industrial designer. It is not just his creative flair and technical genius that make David Mellor a worthy recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award 2006, but also his ability to demonstrate them in almost any field he chooses.
