The judges found these beautiful and innovative Fiorella lamps quite impossible to ignore. They are designed by architect and designer Nigel Coates for Italian company Slamp, and made from Cristalflex acrylic, which gives them a shimmering, iridescent quality. Nigel, professor of architecture and interiors at the Royal College of Art, describes his work as “generating a sense of the unexpected, and the seemingly spontaneous”. The judges loved his Fiorella suspension for its vibrant, stunning, unique form and innovative yet appropriate materials. While its shape harks back to the traditional chandelier, the delicate and intricate design puts it very firmly in the 21st century. It was also commended for its potential for commercial and aesthetic longevity.
