Hume Revolving Book Tower
Designed by London-based furniture designer
Samuel Chan, the Hume revolving book tower is a compact bookcase that swivels an entire 360 degrees. Unlike stationary bookshelves, where the contents can be stored on one side only, this book tower is a complex three-dimensional piece of furniture with storage for books and discs on all four sides. Samuel's aim was to bring what he describes as “the most traditional of rooms” – the private library – up to date. The judges all agreed that he has been successful, commenting: “Samuel Chan has managed to update the bookstand for the 21st century with elegance and sensitivity.”
Cross Extending Table
Matthew Hilton designed the Cross Dining Table for the inaugural collection of London-based
Case Furniture, which was launched last year. The judges, who loved the winning combination of good design, proportion, price and functionality, agreed that the table is a perfect example of Matthew's talents. Made from a solid oak base with a veneered top, it is unusually large – when extended it can seat up to 14 people – yet retains a visual balance due to the thickness of the table top. While it is definitely a design classic, it is also a table that is designed for use.
