Ever since he made his debut at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1986, Matthew Hilton has built a reputation as one Britain's most talented furniture designers. Two decades later, he continues to thrill design professionals and consumers alike with simple, elegant designs that combine good looks with functionality. The Cross Dining Table is no exception. The judges agreed that the table is a perfect example of the designer's talents, with its winning combination of a pleasing profile, finely balanced proportion, good value and practicality. Part of the inaugural collection of London-based Case Furniture, it is made from a solid oak base with a veneered top. The table is unusually large – when extended it can seat up to 14 people – yet the design retains a visual balance due to the proportions of the table top. While it certainly looks set to become a design classic, it is also a table that is designed for everyday use.
