Kathy Brown on pots and containers

How do I know what type of container to use, and where?
There is a wide range to choose from, but ensure the pot has enough holes for adequate drainage and, in full sun, opt for non-porous pots such as glazed terracotta. Line porous pots with a bin liner, piercing holes for drainage at the base. I recommend S & B Evans & Sons and Whichford Pottery.

Which plant combinations work well together in a pot, and also give year-round colour?
Narcissus 'Roseworthy' or 'Pipit' amid variegated London Pride is one of my favourite combinations. The stunning narcissus in April is followed by wispy white London Pride flowers in May. In June, trim the narcissus leaves and London Pride flowers, and you'll have a pot of foliage for the rest of the year.

Can you give me some design ideas for container gardens?
For a tower of colour, plant a hanging basket with Begonia 'Picotee' and pale yellow nasturtiums. Below it, create a pot of Fuchsia 'Thalia', edged with the same begonia, which flowers into October.
