The combination of potted trees and foliage also gives the arrangement some structure. 'As temperatures become cooler, the deeper tones of the planting become more prominent, allowing the porch to shift naturally into late fall without needing to be completely redecorated,' Tenielle says.

It's a simple idea, but one worth replicating far beyond Waco. The lesson we're taking from Joanna and Chip is to build a porch around plants, texture, and foliage that can carry you through it. It makes the transition from Halloween to later fall feel natural, and means you can wake up on November 1st without worry. Your porch will be just as beautiful as the day before.

Dakota Johnson has never been scared to lean into her personal style, and the pops of dusty pink we see in her bathroom work partially because they are in line with this philosophy.

Interior designer Saskia Blyth-Collinson explains: 'I’ve always believed that color should be used with confidence, rather than caution. Some of the most memorable spaces come from introducing an unexpected shade – a hit of cobalt blue, a rich red, or an ochre that you might not initially imagine in the scheme. The key is not to be afraid of colour, but to understand how it will work with the architecture, natural light, and materials around it.'

Rather than blindly following color trends, decorating with millennial pink and gray that aligns with your personal style can help escape these colors feeling overdone. Saskia advises: 'Start with something you genuinely love, rather than what you think you ‘should’ choose, and then build from there. When colour has a sense of purpose, it can bring an incredible energy and individuality to a home.'

As we see in Dakota Johnson's bathroom, part of making pink and gray shades work together is incorporating a range of textures that add depth in the midst of a soothing palette.

Soma Pillay, a Bathroom Specialist at Online Bathroom Specialist Bathroom City, states: 'Color is shifting towards subtle, soothing hues. Pastels and earthy tones are growing in popularity, offering a gentle alternative to monochrome schemes. Soft palettes create a calm, restorative atmosphere that works beautifully with natural textures and light-filled layouts, and can be introduced with dusky pink decorative accents.'

Furthermore, incorporating pops of the natural world through large windows, or a wooden table as we see in Dakota's space is a great option for making a pink and gray combination feel current.

'Nature continues to play a central role in bathroom design,' Soma tells Homes & Gardens. 'In place of stark white schemes, 2026 will bring palettes inspired by the outdoors; think soft greens, warm neutrals, clay, and muted stone tones. Organic textures such as woodgrain, rattan, and raw stone are being used to add warmth and authenticity. Simple touches like potted plants or daylight-optimising layouts complete the sense of calm, helping bathrooms feel more restorative and connected to nature.'

The advice for decorating with plaster pink tones like millennial pink is similar as that for most colors. Saskia says: 'Ultimately, embracing color is about creating an emotional connection with a space. I’m far less interested in whether a particular shade is ‘on trend’ and much more interested in whether it feels right for the people who live there. Above all, they have to love it and feel completely at home in it.'

The tub placement and sensory design in Dakota's bathroom illustrates this strong connection that makes the space feel rich and layered.

Saskia concludes: 'Some of my clients are drawn to bold reds and cobalt blues, while others specifically request neutral walls to allow their art to take centre stage. Neither approach is better than the other – it simply comes down to personal preference and creating a space that feels authentic to the people who live in it.'

That is to say: don't let the internet tell you a color is 'dated.' If you truly love a shade, and decorate with a sense of purpose, it will just work.

Once they're established, many require less watering than people think and can help create a garden that feels like a little escape abroad.'

'Palms create immediate impact and can transform a garden into something that feels much more exotic,' advises Peter. 'Phoenix palms and fan palms are particularly good options for sunny, sheltered spots and are becoming increasingly popular with gardeners.'

Fruit trees, like Penelope's banana leaves, are especially effective because they offer both visual and aromatic benefits. Peter states: 'Container-grown citrus trees, figs and bay trees are brilliant for adding fragrance, texture and a real Mediterranean atmosphere. They work particularly well on terraces and patios where people can enjoy them up close. In fact, this has been our strongest-ever year for citrus tree sales since launching in 2011, with lemon trees proving the standout favourite. We've seen lemon tree sales increase by 613% year-on-year on TikTok Shop, which suggests more people are looking to recreate that Mediterranean feel at home.'

In classic interior design, the cardinal rule of living room spatial layout is scale and proportion.

Traditional wisdom dictates that seating should scale down to preserve open floor space, maintain clear pathways, and allow breathing room around essential accent furniture. Overcrowding a room with an ill-proportioned sofa risks creating an unbalanced feel. However, in their former Gramercy Park penthouse in Manhattan, Jimmy Fallon and Nancy Juvonen ignored those boundaries entirely. Thankfully, the result is a design triumph.

Jimmy and Nancy installed a custom turquoise tufted sectional that wraps around three wood-paneled and wallpapered walls.

Instead of leaving conventional clearance, their living room sofa takes up the entire floor. 'A good signal of whether your sofa is too big for your room is how it fits alongside other essential furniture, like tables and chairs,' explains interior design expert Magdalena Gierasinska.

'If there’s no space for a coffee table in front or side tables nearby, the sofa may be overwhelming the room. Similarly, if navigating around the sofa feels cramped or it blocks natural pathways, it’s likely too large for the space.'

By conventional metrics, Jimmy and Nancy pushed those exact parameters to the limit. Standard side tables are sacrificed in favor of ottomans, and perimeter circulation is eliminated. However, in the context of their sectional living room, that close layout converts what could have been a cramped mistake into a cozy, 1970s-style conversation pit.

'It’s also important to consider the shape of the room; your sofa shouldn’t create any void or excess space that is unusable,' Magdalena says.

Rather than leaving unused corners, Jimmy and Nancy brought the blue velvet right to the edges of the room, converting every available square foot into active seating.

'A sofa should also leave room for balance and proportion, and it shouldn’t dominate the area or make other pieces, such as dining chairs or occasional tables, seem out of scale. Ideally, there should be enough open floor space to move comfortably, and the sofa should feel cohesive with the room’s overall layout,' Magdalena adds.

Where standard design rules favor restraint, Jimmy and Nancy achieved harmony through total commitment. It's proof that breaking scale guidelines works when the execution is deliberate.

Before he was a household name, George Clooney was a struggling actor living in Studio City, Los Angeles. Photographer Lynn McAfee captured him in his apartment in 1989, just before his big break.

Though the home's retro kitchen is a far cry from the luxury properties Clooney has come to call home in more recent years, it contains early glimmers of one of the most crucial elements to understanding his design DNA: play. Take, for example, George and Amal's Oxfordshire Manor. In addition to its nine bedrooms and at-home spa, the property features a converted pool house bar which the couple affectionately calls 'The Party Zone.' This space includes a 16-seat screening room with a popcorn machine, and a custom photobooth for capturing light-night moments. It's on a different scale and price tag from the Studio City apartment, but the intention of having a great time still undergirds the design decisions.

Furthermore, just like George went beyond the classic '80s color trends in decorating his retro apartment, he decorated his 18th-century estate on Lake Como, Villa Oleandra, with another period in mind. After purchasing the estate in 2002, he and Amal set about renovating it to preserve the historic character, while updating it for modern living. Their choice of a bright turquoise and gold color scheme in the living room embodies this philosophy. Drawing inspiration from the Baroque period, it conveys classic Italian elegance – with whimsy.

She continues: 'For those who love pattern and want to create a bold focal point in their living room, I would recommend that they follow their heart and invest in a patterned sofa. I’d recommend ordering swatches so that you can judge how the fabric will look in different lighting and decide if it works within your existing space.'

Trying out a patterned throw pillow or blanket is the perfect way to test out the trend with a lower commitment.

Choosing a patterned sofa, like Jamie Lee Curtis, can also be a decision made with function in mind. Magdalena says: 'Aside from aesthetics, a patterned sofa is also a practical option for those who have children or pets – pattern is more forgiving of stains, compared to a plain or neutral colour which is a key consideration when choosing a sofa.'

Futhermore, though a patterened sofa can be a bold accent, the sofa isn't necessarily the place to go overboard in terms of risky design choices.

Magdalena states: 'My advice would be to choose a classic pattern that has stood the test of time – a floral or a stripe is a perfect choice and as these designs have been popular for decades, they really are timeless.'

In case you didn’t know, there’s a Victorian water tower high above King Charles’s estate, and it’s entering a new chapter (which could involve you).

Built in 1877 at Sandringham, the neo-Byzantine landmark has been transformed into a secluded retreat overlooking the royal residence. And it's now available to rent through Oliver’s Travels.

Designed by engineer James Mansergh, the tower was originally built with practicality in mind. After the future King Edward VII contracted typhoid at Sandringham, a new water system was commissioned for the property. The 32,000-gallon tower was designed to provide water pressure across the grounds, while its upper viewing room offered a vantage point for royal shooting parties.

Nearly 150 years later, the building has been given a new purpose without losing much of what makes it distinctive.

Inside, the design works within the tower’s existing circular footprint, with each floor taking on a different role. Curved brickwork, winding staircases, heritage-inspired colors, reclaimed materials from Sandringham, and historic royal photographs give the rooms an evident connection to their setting.

The ground floor houses the country kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. In the main living area, layered textiles ensure the space feels cozy yet luxurious, while deep-set masonry windows frame views of the surrounding grounds.

On the third floor, the living room sits at treetop level, with a working fireplace and views directly over the estate.

Meanwhile, the second floor is home to a king-size bedroom, featuring an abundance of tartan and other layered textiles that feel so distinctly British.

One thing about me: I'm very particular about what I put on my bed. It's my sanctuary, after all, so average sheets, duvet covers, and pillows simply won't make the cut. Which, yes, that does mean I usually splurge on the best bed sheets.

I'm always on the look out for large planters. As gorgeous as they are, clay pots can be a small investment and heavy to move around, so I often opt for inexpensive resin alternatives, offering lighter weight and a sleek appearance.

My latest find for my container garden is the ALDI Belavi resin planter, which is available in three beautiful shades – purple, black, and white – for $9.99. It's the burgundy-purple planter catching my eye because it's the ultimate addition to a fall porch, complimenting the colors of seasonal foliage and flowers.

Not only is it a fraction of the price of a clay planter in a similar style, you can easily use it for a layered container arrangement because it has a larger capacity. Even paired with other earth-toned pots, this resin planter offers the pop of color you get from a higher-end glazed ceramic pot. But, I don't expect stock to last long, so I'm picking it up now ready for my fall garden.

How I'd Style It

Of course, there are endless ways to create a container garden. The ALDI Belavi resin planter can work as a statement pot on its own, or join a collection of curated planters. For me, the unique burgundy shade makes it the perfect vessel for fall containers.

Considering these planters are just $9.99, I'd use two flanked either side of my front door where I love to create a seasonal welcome to my home.

To plant them up, I'd use heuchera for fall foliage (this purple heuchera from Plant Addicts is the perfect shade), as well as some fall flowers for pots, like these violas from Walmart. I like the idea of adding some ornamental grasses for texture, too.

Don't forget, there's also the black Belavi resin planter from ALDI and white Belavi resin planter from ALDI if the purple pot doesn't work with your garden color scheme. Both of these options provide a more subtle foundation so the eye is drawn to your seasonal blooms.

Made of resin, these planters are lightweight, so you can move them around as needed with ease.

One thing to note, however, is the listing doesn't mention drainage holes. The good news is it's easy to add drainage holes to planters, especially resin which can be drilled through. If needed, add around three drainage holes for excess water to stop your plants' roots rotting.

As for filling the bottom of a large planter, save on potting mix by using twigs, rocks, and even cardboard.

The best home upgrades are the ones that look like they’ve been there all along – not always easy if you have a taste for decorating with vintage. And windows are usually the dead giveaway. Those hardwood floors might be original, but those beautifully brittle, poorly sealed panes were probably tossed a long time ago.

I just found a $25 renter-friendly solution that restores some of that lost charm and is convincing enough to make an all-new build look like it was born in another century. Fittingly, it comes from DIY-savvy Chris and Julia Marcum of Chris Loves Julia. Because my pre-war NYC apartment deserves it. Most of my windows are fantastic – south-facing, floor-to-ceiling – save for two that need a little love, staring directly into the brick building beside mine. I can’t move the building. I can, however, see a little less of it while turning one of my apartment’s biggest eyesores into an 'antique' design feature.

'Gold and deeper yellow living room sofas are proving that color doesn't have to be intimidating. We’re seeing a rise in their popularity as homeowners move away from playing it safe in their interior décor schemes. These sofas are warm, they’re optimistic, they add personality. And they’re easier to live with than you might think.'

The important distinction is between a deep, earthy yellow and a brighter one. 'Although many people might see yellow as an adventurous choice, it can actually be a really versatile option for a sofa,' Lucy explains.

'Think deeper shades like honey, saffron, ochre, turmeric and antique gold, rather than bright sunshine yellow. They’ve got that kind of earthy quality that means they’re much easier to style than primary-type yellows and I do think they have just as much longevity as more traditional neutrals.'

Texture also makes a difference. Velvet, boucle, or other tactile upholstery can give these deeper tones a softer, more sophisticated finish while remaining practical for everyday living.

'A textured fabric in a warm gold instantly makes a contemporary sofa feel inviting, while also being incredibly practical,' Lucy says. 'Textured upholstery is naturally forgiving in busy family homes; it disguises everyday wear and adds another layer of visual interest.'

That is perhaps what makes Kaley’s sofa trend feel so current. The lesson is less about choosing yellow specifically and more about reconsidering what a neutral can be. When the shade has enough depth, and the shape is right, there’s no reason a richer color can’t be just as versatile as gray.

Recently at a cocktail party, someone who'd just moved asked what she should buy to elevate her space. A candle sconce, I answered. I've been obsessed since the trend took off last fall: no wiring, ridiculously romantic in seconds. And for outdoors? I had one specific sleeper hit from Pooky in mind.

Perched along 84 feet of ocean-bluff frontage in Malibu’s coveted Point Dume enclave, the 1.1-acre estate has come to market for $28.5 million. However, to understand its influence as one of the world's best homes today, one must look back at its creative past.

Gail Zappa, Frank Zappa’s wife and trustee of the Zappa Family Trust, originally acquired the home and continued to oversee its legacy following the musician’s death in 1993. Jane states: 'Plants require nutrients to grow and remain healthy, particularly during spring and summer when growth is most active. A weekly feed is recommended during this period.'

Furthermore, Michelle Pfeiffer's gorgeous hardscaping is good for more than aesthetics. It helps support a healthy biome that encourages plant growth. Noah Mabey, Senior Gardener at Thornbridge Hall, explains: 'Wildlife can struggle to find fresh water during long periods of warm weather, so putting out a shallow dish of clean water can make a real difference.'

From Arhaus to Anthropologie, over the past year I’ve watched a number of my favorite brands debut floral sofas – a once very ‘granny’ furniture item that, had you told me years ago I’d want one taking up primary real estate in my living room, I would have laughed at. But the tides have changed: patterned sofas are everywhere for 2026, and while there’s no shortage of good ones, one question remains. How on earth do you style one?

Because the ‘granny chic’ thing is a fine line with this sofa trend. Lest it tip too far toward the former, I asked Shea McGee this exact question – especially after spotting the Octavia Sectional in her new fall 2026 McGee & Co. collection, an heirloom-inspired floral fête of deep navy, indigo, and sun-weathered moss.

Her advice surprised me. ‘People think mixing patterns is about finding patterns that match, but it’s really about finding colors that belong together.’ So while the collection also includes a cohesive family of pillow covers and an ottoman, Shea isn't making this a reunion. She’s finding a color throughline – and then doing the thing you were probably trying to avoid in the first place: adding more pattern.

‘If everything lives within the same palette – deep blues, warm browns, burgundy, soft creams – you can mix florals, stripes, checks, and block prints much more freely because the color is doing the work of creating harmony.’

Apparently, I’ve been thinking about this all wrong. I assumed the floral sofa should be the hero print, given plenty of breathing room and maybe one really agreeable pillow. Instead, the best way to make it read granny – emphasis on chic – is to treat it like anything else in the living room. Let the pattern play commence.

‘That’s really my favorite trick for mixing patterns: repeat a color or motif in a few different places and balance it with solids and natural materials.’

And if pattern drenching isn’t your thing, the same strategy applies to solids, too. ‘One of my favorite examples this season is our Octavia Sectional in the floral jacquard,’ Shea continues. ‘It’s definitely a statement print, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming because we repeat those beautiful blue tones throughout the room – in the pillows, the painted Hayward Coffee Table, even smaller decorative accents. Your eye moves naturally from one piece to the next, so the room feels layered instead of busy.’

So if you also assumed the answer to your floral fiasco was minimalism, think again. For the floral sofa to land, make like a real granny and layer. ‘Suddenly it feels like the room came together over time instead of being decorated all at once. It feels collected, and that’s always the goal.’

My first true ‘big girl’ purchase as an interiors-obsessed person – finally with the job to prove it – was a Mackenzie-Childs kettle. It’s a classic gateway. As a celebrity style editor, I've noticed that one of the most significant shifts in modern home design is the way spaces are increasingly conceived in conversation with the landscape. More often, architects are designing gardens to become part of everyday living – and Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s living room is one of my favorite examples of such an approach.

Walk the swampy streets of any style-inclined city this summer, and you’ll find one very specifically frosty shade of blue – ice blue – cooling everything from the runway to the bed.

Dior put it on the SS26 runway in Paris. Miu Miu made it the color-drench of choice for its reopened flagship in Miami. Anne Hathaway wore a cascading train of it to The End of Oak Street premiere in Los Angeles. And where I live in New York, if the influencer you swear by doesn’t have it splashed across their bed sheets, one wonders whether they’re worth their salt.

Ice blue has become something of a calling card for a certain cosmopolitan style set, as well as appropriately cool-person-coded bedding brands like Tekla and HOMMEY. Last September, Nordic Knots forayed into sheets with ‘Shirt Blue’ – a close approximation of ‘Sky,’ the fashion-influencer-favorite rug shade that’s taken off for much the same reason. And Quince, of course, has struck while the iron's hot (or, given this particular color, not) with more affordable takes on all three.

Paired with the obvious sandy neutrals, ice blue starts to feel a little too beach house. Instead, we’re bringing the bedding trend back to its runway roots. Chocolate brown is perhaps its chicest companion, especially on a fitted sheet (HOMMEY’s reversible designs let you flip between the two). Copenhagen-based Tekla takes a sweeter approach, pairing its icy Evening Blue duvet with Blushing Pink pillowcases and Cloud White sheets.

When it comes to getting a better night’s sleep, few topics are as hotly debated as the ‘perfect’ bedroom temperature. For years, 78°F was widely considered the ideal setting, but a new survey spanning all 50 states suggests that most people actually prefer to sleep with the thermostat set considerably lower.

This doesn't just promise a more comfortable, restful night's sleep, either. A lower temperature will also help you cut energy costs and save money at the same time.

Here, sleep and HVAC experts explain this perfect thermostat setting for better sleep.

In the recent American Sleep Habits Study, conducted by Bear Mattress, 2,119 adults were surveyed on their preferred sleep temperature. The results were conclusive: The average ideal for sleeping better across the US is 67 degrees Fahrenheit, though there is variation by state. For example, in Massachusetts, an average of 63.2°F is preferred, while Hawaii showed a warmer average of 69.5°F.

In any case, these results show a stark deviation from the previously believed 78 degrees. Instead, 67 is 'the temperature most Americans say helps them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer,' added Bear Mattress in a recent PR Newswire press release.

To Courtney Stefanski, Board-Certified Physician working in partnership with Opera Beds, these findings are unsurprising. 'Temperature has a bigger impact on sleep quality than most people realize,' she says. 'As we prepare for sleep, our core body temperature naturally begins to drop. This cooling process is part of the body’s normal transition into sleep, so the environment we sleep in needs to be beneficial to that removal of heat.

'The bedroom temperature is cool enough at 67°F to permit this natural drop in core temperature without being uncomfortably cold. The opposite is 78°F, which can be too hot for many people, especially when combined with warm bedding or high humidity. When it’s hot outside, the body has to work harder to get rid of heat, which can make it more difficult to fall asleep, leading to more awakenings and less restorative sleep.'

As Courtney stresses, this is especially important during REM sleep, as this is when the body's ability to regulate temperature is reduced, even when sleeping under the best cooling sheets. 'So a bedroom that is too warm can become more disruptive throughout the night,' she adds.

Importantly, Courtney also highlights that 67°F is, unfortunately, not a magic number that applies to everyone.

'Thermal comfort is a matter of individual preferences, bedding, clothing, humidity and health,' she explains. 'But 67°F is a good starting point for most adults and falls within the 65-68°F range often recommended by experts.'
