'Many of us thought the ‘winter white’ trend would be the one – but this darker Cotswold room [where I am sitting] sets the tone for us. It feels classic to a lot of us. I love to keep my most used spices displayed on a tiered rack and my olive oil and salt cellar on a tray that can easily move with me from the stove to the kitchen island.'

It was such a game changer that we created a version of it for Sweet July. I use a lot of spices when I cook, and this makes everything so easy to find. Sometimes, when I don’t know what to cook, I’ll even start with the spice cabinet to inspire me.'

The ever-evolving kitchen design world has just revealed its latest trend: the slab backsplash. And one power couple has already mastered the aesthetic. 

Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha exhibit a statement gray marble backsplash that's notably large enough to cover the entire wall behind their stove. Instead of relying on multiple smaller tiles, they opted for a single piece of marble that oozes luxury – and it's a look that's topping kitchen trends, experts say.

Firstly, Richard explains that the slab backsplash's ability to create a seamless finish is among its most striking qualities and, consequently, a driving force behind the design trend. 

'This continuous, uninterrupted surface offers a contrast to tiles and their grout lines, which can make a space feel overly busy,' he says.

'Slab backsplashes also offer an extensive range of materials to choose from, each exuding its unique character and charm. While natural stone, such as marble, quartzite, and granite, imparts a classic and timeless aura, engineered quartz, porcelain, and even glass are also popular choices for those seeking a contemporary and versatile appeal. Warm neutrals have been one of the most popular color schemes of 2023, and we don't see the trend fading anytime soon. With the (understandable) popularity of colors like beige, brown, and warm whites, it is important to include unique touches to keep the look interesting and feeling personal.

Power couple Ayesha and Stephen Curry's neutral living room demonstrates exactly how it's done.

The Canadian-American actress and the NBA player's warm neutral living room incorporates dark lines for a touch of visual interest. Julio Arco, interior designer and architect at Bark and Chase says, 'Incorporating white with tan and beige is a strategy I often employ in my designs. White acts as a fresh counterpoint to these warm neutrals, giving the space a more airy and spacious feel. Especially in settings where beige and tan dominate, introducing white in the form of trim, ceilings, or accent pieces can break any potential monotony. In my experience, a room's lightness is significantly affected by the interior color. A white ceiling, in particular, is often preferred as it reflects light and heightens the room's perception.'

He cautions, 'It's crucial to strike a balance; too much white can make the warm neutrals feel washed out, so I advise using it thoughtfully and in moderation,' Stephen and Ayesha have carefully struck this balance.

We do everything out of this space...so we wanted something a little bit elevated that's still livable – and also a place [where] we could feel proud of and confident in if we were entertaining.' The Bay Area's favorite power couple, Stephen and Ayesha Curry, have been decorating with checks – a vintage print rooted in nostalgia. 

Golden State Warriors player Stephen and his actress wife Ayesha is used to making headlines in sports and the silver screen, but recently, they've turned their attention to (unintentionally) inspiring our decorating decisions – including outdoor furniture. Or, in this case, checkered patterned furniture.

According to Etsy’s trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson, vintage patterns, much like this check, are in growing demand this 2023 – especially when it comes with a modern twist like Ayesha and Stephen's pared-back gray sofa.

'Old school patterns are showing up in new ways, as younger generations of Grandmillennials and Cottagecore-enthusiast Gen Z shoppers seek to create cozy, eclectic and nostalgic interiors,' she says. 

'These patterns bring an air of sophistication and refinement to contemporary spaces while maintaining a sense of playfulness and individuality,' Dayna comments.

 And this translates beyond garden trends and in terms of interiors, too. 'In the last three months, we've seen a staggering  1,041% increase in searches for embroidered botanical items, while searches for vintage wallpaper are up 162%,' she says, as another example of another classical revival. 

In specific terms of Ayesha and Stephen's sofa trend, however, Dayna is not alone in her admiration. 

'Checkered pattern is considered a classic print, and I could see it trending this summer. Classic patterns become timeless, and when properly used in a space, you can create both a modern or traditional aesthetic,' adds Las Vegas-based designer Monica Rivas.

To style a sofa like Ayesha and Stephen's, the designer recommends pairing it with dark green accents (through plants), just as the couple has done. 'Meanwhile, accent pillows with small textured patterns would pair well with clean, sleek line furniture for a nice modern look.' 

Decorating with checks is a wonderful way to bring color and pattern into the home. With designs ranging from buffalo plaid to tartan, checks are incredibly versatile as they work with so many other prints and can complement both traditional and contemporary schemes.

We can all learn a lot from Stephen and Ayesha Curry, the most talked-about couple in California's Bay Area. The Golden State Warriors star Stephen and his actress wife Ayesha are icons on the basketball court and on screen – so if anyone can convince us to rethink conventions, it's them. And they've just done precisely that – with beige. 

Admittedly, we are sometimes quick to judge beige – the seemingly safe hue that rarely enjoys as much buzz as its more vibrant counterparts. However, the way we're decorating with beige is changing. 

This versatile tone is, at last, receiving recognition from designers (it's been slated as the color replacing gray in 2023) and celebrities alike – and, of course, Stephen and Ayesha are right out in front of this color trend, taking this traditionally homey color and making it glamorous. 

In a post, Ayesha, best known for About Last Night and Ayesha's Home Kitchen, shared a look into their luxe, beige-colored space – which includes painted ceiling that ensures the room is a striking celebration of the color in question. 

Gray is of the best accent colors for beige, so it's no surprise to see a large gray sofa and rug (much like the one we've found below) included in the scheme – creating a color pairing that hasn't gone unnoticed by Helen Shaw, a color expert and director of marketing at Benjamin Moore.

Helen recommends combining similar neutral-color families together – just as Ayesha and Stephen have done through their gray and beige pairing. However, if we're looking to emphasize the color further, Helen suggests adding reds and oranges to the mix. 

'Neutrals are perfect for calming down busy and bold schemes while also perfect for enhancing minimal and contemporary looks. When looking to pair neutrals, look to group color families together, combining beige tones with reds and oranges,' she says. 

'These colors are an essential color family for any interior renovation and range from cool grays to warm beiges and plaster pinks. Over the last few seasons, we have seen a progression toward the warmer shades as these feel comforting and uplifting.'

Inside Ayesha Curry's kitchen

Ayesha’s kitchen has wide windows, which is ideal for letting natural light in even on the days she’s spending hours behind the stove trying to perfect an especially tricky recipe.

The overall star of this space would have to be her massive five burner stove. It is ideal for cooking and baking large, multi-course family dinners and smaller, more intimate ones. Above the stove is a pot filler and a range hood which both make cooking every meal even more convenient.

The kitchen also boasts plenty of counter space. On either side of the stove, there is ample space for even most tedious culinary tasks. From propping up kitchen gadgets, such as her KitchenAid stand mixer (below), to rolling out pasta dough, most jobs can get done with ease. However, Ayesha didn’t stop there – across from the stove is a large marble slab kitchen island with a built-in sink, which acts as another work surface.

The island is also perfect for entertaining guests, or as mom of three Ayesha knows, feeding some hungry kiddos. Ayesha’s children have also left their own creative touch on the space. One of the walls next to her fridge is decorated with colorful hand-painted drawings from her kids (see below). The paintings are a small way to imbue the kitchen with a bit of warmth and keep it from feeling a bit too cold and impersonal.

Both the counter and the island features multiple wood-finish drawers. The drawers are perfect for storing utensils, spices, or anything that is a bit too cluttered to leave out in the open. There is no shortage of storage or style in this elevated kitchen.

Ayesha has described her kitchen and the act of cooking as the place 'where memories are made and open communication is nurtured.' So, it comes as no surprise that Ayesha and her husband, basketball player Stephen Curry, splurged and paid such keen attention to detail when crafting this impressive space.
