I saved my dull knives with a $20 sharpener style favored by Bobby Berk – it's easily my favorite kitchen buy of the year

I’ve had my kitchen knives since 2012 but recently, they wouldn’t even cut into tomatoes. I started looking online for a new set, until I remembered Bobby Berk using a magnetic rolling knife sharpener.

I decided to give one a go as it would be at least 50 percent cheaper to sharpen, rather than replace my knives.

The great news is, the $20 magnetic rolling knife sharpener from Amazon not only brought my knives back to life, it's so easy to use and now my favorite kitchen purchase of the year.

Affordable and effective

I bought a five-sided one at this price point, but after reading the information booklet in the box, I reckon a two-sided one like this is enough. Most knives are manufactured with either a 15° and 20° blade angle, so keep things simple.

Why I'd put off sharpening knives before this

I grew up in a Persian household and our delicious Middle Eastern cuisine is very meat-heavy. We'd buy meat whole, on the bone, and carve up ourselves to remove all fat before batch cooking.

Before every session, my dad would use a long stainless steel rod sharpener, available on Amazon, which happens to be Gordon Ramsay's preferred sharpening method, and go back and forth on the knives. He’d easily spend 15 minutes sharpening the knives we need for our meat prepping.

My mom preferred an electric knife sharpener, like the currently discounted on Amazon Chef's Choice Edge electric sharpener favored by professional cook and Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten.

Despite growing up seeing this being done and now a very adept cook myself, I've honestly lacked the confidence to sharpen knives myself. Until now.

The magnetic rolling knife sharpener style looked so easy, and totally not scary, as demonstrated by interior designer and TV personality Bobby Berk on Instagram:

I wanted something small, quick, and easy to use and a magnetic roller has proven to be the magic key for me. I'm so glad I took a punt on it. Now, there's many listing on offer on Amazon and worth snapping.

Mine has four magnetic sides with varying angles. You simply and carefully pop your knife, blade up, on the magnetic edge, then roll the cylindrical sharpener back and forwards. Start with the low grit, and then switch to the higher grit afterwards for refining the newly sharpened edge of your knife.

I learned in the instruction booklet that most knives are made in factories that use either a 20° or 15° angle. Using the wrong one might damage yours so if you can track down the information online for your particular set, align with that. Knowing this now, I would have gone for a simple two-sided magnetic rolling sharpener like this from Amazon instead.

Nonetheless, it only took me a minute or two per knife to restore its sharpness. I opted for the 20° because my knife is the Jamie Oliver Tefal Paring one available as a duo on Amazon, and Tefal's own knife care blog says to sharpen at 20°.

My verdict

My magnetic roller is very easy and small to store, doesn’t require electricity or anything really, including much elbow grease. That works well for me as I am in chronic pain with a connective tissue disorder and do not have much hand or wrist strength.

The form and function of the rolling knife sharpener I bought on Amazon is brilliantly fit for purpose. Rolling designs are based on the original and more pricey Horl rolling knife sharpener, which came to market in 1993.

I didn't have the big budget to splash on the original Horl, or the popular Tumbler sharpener used by Berk but I am OK with that.

I saved myself between $50 and $100 dollars by sharpening, not replacing my knives and would highly recommend this for anyone who hasn’t sharpened knives themselves before.

Bobby Berk just shared the solution to a perfectly cohesive gallery wall – and it's not only about the frames you use

When styling a gallery wall, you'd be forgiven if your design decisions ended with the size, shape, and color of the frames. However, while frames are inevitably vital, the styling of our wider room is similarly crucial to a gallery wall's sucsess – a fact that's not lost on the likes of Bobby Berk.

The Queer Eye alumni knows just about everything there is to know about gallery wall styling – so much so, in fact, that he collaborated with Frameology to design six wall sets (and 12 unique frames) in a series of versatile colors. Naturally, a beautifully designed wall begins with the frames, but it certainly doesn't end there, as Berk explains.

'When it comes to styling a gallery wall, the key is to think about the entire room as one cohesive design moment. You want the wall to feel like an intentional part of the space – not just something you threw up at the last minute,' Berk says in an exclusive interview with H&G.

Arguably, there's nothing quite as impactful as our chosen base hue. For this, Berk recommends a soft neutral (but still gives us permission to go bolder if we so choose).

For paint colors, go for a neutral base that lets your art shine but still creates a cozy vibe. Colors like soft whites, warm grays, taupe, or sage green are my go-to. If you want to add more drama, a rich charcoal or deep navy works beautifully behind a gallery wall, giving the frames extra contrast and making the art pop,' he says.

Next, when it comes to furniture, we should keep things minimal, allowing the gallery wall to make the statement it deserves. 'When styling furniture near a gallery wall, simplicity is key. Stick with clean-lined sofas, benches, or console tables that complement the art but don’t compete with it,' Berk says.

Gallery walls have a habit of looking effortless, but the most beautiful creations are the result of meticulous planning, most specifically regarding frame placement. Nobody understands this quite like Bobby Berk, the Queer Eye alumni, who has partnered with Frameology to design six gallery wall sets (and 12 unique frames), aka the ticket to your dream gallery wall.

Naturally, therefore, styling frames (or, in this case, how not to style frames) is currently at the peak of Berk's agenda. The first thing to avoid? Hanging everything too high.

'So many people think their art needs to sit way above eye level, and suddenly, you’re craning your neck just to enjoy it,' Berk says in an exclusive interview with H&G.

'Here’s the thing: Art is meant to connect with you – and that connection happens when it’s at eye level or just a little above. The sweet spot for most gallery walls is about 57-60 inches from the floor to the center of the arrangement.'

Ensuring your gallery wall doesn't look too high is the first step to creating a beautiful wall feature, but as Berk suggests, cohesion is also vital.

'Keep it cohesive, not matchy-matchy. What makes a gallery wall work is a sense of harmony – whether it’s through color tones, frame styles, or a shared theme in the art. It doesn’t mean every piece has to look the same, but they need to feel like they belong together, like old friends at a party – because a gallery wall should tell a story, not feel like clutter,' he comments.

'When there’s too much contrast or no unifying element, it gets overwhelming and distracts from the beauty of the pieces you’re trying to highlight. Plus, while it's easy a series of frames adorning the staircase of a grand entryway or open-plan living room, Berk suggests it's just as possible to bring the look into a smaller home. We just need to be more strategic.

'When space is tight, the key is to think vertically and be intentional. A gallery wall doesn’t have to take up an entire room – you can introduce it in creative ways,' he says.

'Try a narrow section of a hallway, above a desk, or even going up a staircase. These areas are perfect for a curated collection of smaller pieces that don’t overwhelm the room but still make an impact.'

According to Bobby Berk – interior designer and former Queer Eye star – the impact is significant. Bobby recently took to Instagram to share more about a small space that's known to collect clutter, and why clearing it off should be first on your chore list. These are the decluttering tips he had to share.

'Do you ever walk into your space and it's a mess, and instantly feel not so great? There's a reason for that. When you're surrounded by chaos, it creates chaos in your mind, and it instantly makes you feel anxious and nervous,' Bobby says in the video.

While tidying and organizing is undoubtedly important across the whole home, Bobby says that smaller spaces are often the culprits behind a cluttered mind. Often forgotten and easy to neglect, small surfaces and corners can easily become catchalls for books and magazines, water glasses, and other small items that crop up throughout the day.

From coffee tables to mudrooms, high-traffic areas are extra susceptible to additional buildup. But one space that Bobby suggests you pay special attention to hits very close to home: the bedside table.

'When you are going to sleep with the nightstand piled with junk, whether it be a bunch of cups that we've got water in, or drinks that we've left, or food – don't eat in bed, by the way, just saying – that starts to pile up. That's the last thing you see before you go to sleep and the first thing you see when you wake up – you're surrounding yourself in chaos and clutter. That is not good for your mental health,' Bobby says.

Organizing the bedroom well makes for a serene nighttime routine and a carefree start to the morning. By creating the perfect bedroom sanctuary, designing not just for aesthetic appeal but also for functionality, you'll be setting yourself up for success. Aside from the nightstand, ensure your bookshelves, wardrobe, closet, and any under-bed storage is looking tidy for a peaceful night's sleep.

Discovering your interior design style is easier said than done. From minimalism to maximalism, Scandinavian to Spanish, and organic modern to coastal grandmother, the already endless list of design aesthetics seems to grow by the hour. Knowing where you fit into the mix isn't an exact science, and seldom tells the full story of your design preferences, taste and style.

If you can't make up your mind on whether your design style leans more mid-century modern or transitional, there's no need to stress. In fact, one of interior design's biggest names says that the label you select for your style doesn't matter too much at all. Bobby Berk – renowned interior designer and former Queer Eye star – just took to Instagram to share the interior design question you should never ask: What is your design style? This is why, plus what Bobby says you should be asking instead.

'This is why you should never ask anyone what their design aesthetic is,' Bobby says to start off the video, explaining that his background designing heroes' homes on Queer Eye and helping others spruce their spaces has taught him this valuable lesson. 'When designing your space, you should have a space that not only looks good, but makes you feel good.'

We all want our homes to be beautiful – that's a given. But designing a home that'll boost your mood (and one that feels like you) makes a good space great. By thinking beyond design aesthetics' restrictions and rules, Bobby says you'll be able to craft a home that fills your cup.

What's more, everyone's interpretation of design styles is slightly different. Even if you approach a designer with a Hollywood Regency style in mind, there's no guarantee you'll love every element of the final product. Bobby learned this lesson quickly when working with his Queer Eye heroes, he shares in the video.

'Often when you ask somebody what their design aesthetic is, they'll just kind of choose a random one that they might have heard before. Instead, ask somebody what visually makes them happy. It can be things out in the world from architecture to food to clothing,' says Bobby. 'In the very first episode of Queer Eye, I asked Tom, "What's your design aesthetic?" and he said, "French industrial." And I was like, "Tom, are you sure? Can you tell me what French industrial is?" And he's like, "No, I just heard it once."'

'Right then and there, I actually learned not to ask heroes on Queer Eye what their design aesthetic is, because like a lot of people in the world, it's not something they've really thought about. Either they haven't had the luxury of thinking about it, or it's just not something that they've cared to think about,' Bobby continues.

There's no harm in using an aesthetic as an anchor, or source of inspiration. Whether you look to fleeting trends or classic interior design styles, there's value to be found in each and every look. But when it comes to designing your own home – especially one you plan to cherish for the long haul – Bobby says it serves you better to design based on what brings you joy.

'When thinking about design, either for yourself or for your friends and family, think about the things that really make them happy: dream vacations, movies, television shows, food, your favorite sweater. Those are the things that you need to infuse into your home, because those are the things that you're passionate about, and ultimately the things that are gonna make your home work for you,' says Bobby.

This week, interior designer and Queer Eye star Bobby Berk announced a brand-new partnership with Fiverr, an online marketplace where freelancers of all trades connect with clients. As a brand ambassador, not only will Bobby be sharing design tips and tricks on Fiverr's site, but he'll be offering complimentary, 45-minute-long interior design sessions for three lucky winners – individuals or businesses. To hear a bit more about the partnership, and what questions to ask an interior designer, we sat down with Bobby himself. Here's what he had to say.

'Meeting one-on-one with a designer allows you to get their full attention and their singular focus on your project. When you meet with a freelance designer on Fiverr, it also gives you a chance to receive direct feedback (both positive and constructive) on specific design details, a style, or direction you may be leaning towards,' Bobby tells H&G.

When in the design process should you meet with an interior designer?

'I would advise scheduling a meeting when you have a concrete idea of exactly what your project is. Determine whether you want to fully renovate a room, or just do a small refresh. It's also best to meet towards the beginning and before you have started any actual work in the space, so the designer can really have a clean slate to work from.'

If you only have 45 minutes with a designer, what questions would you ask?

'First and foremost, make sure you come prepared. It's a good idea to have photos of your space, inspiration images, and a general idea of the scope of what you are looking to achieve. Write down a list of topics and/or questions before the meeting too. If there are things you are uncertain about or looking for advice on, those should be the first questions you ask.

'It's also a good idea to focus on the "bigger picture" and the more substantial and pivotal parts of the project, like the layout, furniture, paint, materials, and lighting. Don't spend too much time talking about small details that could change based on other decisions.'

What’s a bit of design advice you feel like you’re always giving?

'Paint colors! Everyone wants to know what color to paint a room, whether it's a quick makeover, a model home, or a full renovation. But there is no universal option that works in every space. So I will make a recommendation for a color family or shade, and then always test out samples to see what a color really looks in the space at different times of day with different lighting conditions.'

'I personally use Fiverr to hire freelancers for areas of my business that are out of my skill set, like 3D renderings, marketing, or web design. This allows me to maximize my time and focus on what I do best. And the great thing about Fiverr is that anyone can use it to find a skilled freelancer.

Since announcing his departure from Queer Eye, interior designer Bobby Berk has kept busy – between traveling the world and doling out advice on home improvement app Thumbtack, it's a wonder he's also found time to create gorgeous interiors.

But as part of an ongoing collaboration with Tri Pointe Homes, Bobby's designed several stunning homes – some of which are already for sale. And lucky for us, he just shared a bit more about one of his latest projects.

Bobby says this home is Scandinavian-inspired but still packed with powerful pops of color, a combination we just can't get enough of. Both playful and sophisticated, clean and characterful, this space is a perfect example of Bobby's anti-trend, feeling-first style. Here, we take a closer look at the space, and hear from Bobby what makes it so unique.

'The development that I want to talk about today is our Vertex Development. We took a cool, serene, Scandinavian style, but we infused a lot of pops of color – blues, reds, oranges, yellows. There is color everywhere in this place,' Bobby says in an Instagram video exploring this delightful space.

Sticking to a bright yet muted color palette, Bobby has infused just the right amount of excitement into the space – despite the energy each pop of color brings, the overall aesthetic remains relaxing and calm. The Scandinavian interior design influence is apparent, too, with sleek, clean lines and a clutter-free mindset on display.

Though color is a defining feature of the space, it doesn't take over. Fit for those who aren't quite ready for maximalism but still appreciate some vibrancy, Bobby says this space strikes a careful balance between all-out and pared-back design.

'The way we made it still, I would say, kind of neutral is with some of the main pieces, we used gray fabrics and a lot of neutral tones. We were able to infuse a lot of color but still keep it not overwhelming,' he says.

The home's dining room is beautifully illuminated by floor-to-ceiling, sliding glass doors and a sculptural modern light fixture. Paired with a light gray-green shade on the walls and bright red Scandinavian-style dining chairs, the room's clean, sleek lines are given an invigorating upgrade.

A favored place for Scandinavian sensibility to shine, the kitchen is clad in light blue tile backsplash and glossy white cabinetry. Perhaps the most neutral space in the whole home, it's a gorgeous example of modern interior design at its best.

'If you like bright color, if you love pop art but you also love minimalism, I think this is the house for you,' Bobby says in the video.

Located in Summerlin, Nevada, this 2-bedroom home is made to feel much larger with ample natural light and bright, clean colors. The entryway is a welcoming embrace, and just a small taste of what's to come in the rest of the space. A bright orange accent wall and sculptural console table greet visitors with just the right bit of whimsy.

The home's bedroom makes a bold statement, with navy blue paint applied in an angular, geometric shape that reaches up to the ceiling. A speckled area rug picks up on the overall color palette, and two burnt orange ottomans bookmark the bed. A bright neon sign above the bed serves as a fitting finishing touch, emulating the whole home's atmosphere.

The hub of the home, the space's living room is bright, airy, and inviting with an expansive sectional and lush, color-blocked rug. Bobby Berk's game-changing hack fixes candle tunnels and uneven wax in 5 simple steps

I love a nice scented candle. In fact, I'm borderline obsessed with them. But the one thing that never ceases to amaze me is that even the best candles can burn unevenly or start to tunnel if you don't practice effective candle care.

Thankfully, interior designer Bobby Berk took to Instagram earlier this month to share his game-changing hack to prevent uneven burning from ruining your favorite candles:

In the short clip, the famed interior designer revealed that hacking away at uneven candle wax with a butter knife is far from the best method of fixing candle tunnels. Not only is this method wasteful, but it's unsightly, too.

Instead, Bobby revealed a simple 5-step trick to level your candles using affordable aluminum foil:

Step 1: Cut enough aluminum foil to wrap around the top of your candle.

Step 2: Light the wick.

Step 3: Wrap the foil around the top of the candle, leaving enough space for oxygen to get through to the flame.

Step 4: Wait a few hours (ensuring you don't leave the candle unsupervised).

Step 5: Unwrap your candle and blow out the flame. Once the wax has dried, your candles should be perfectly level again.

Of course, you could also invest in a stylish candle warmer to keep your candle wax perfectly even. But when a roll of aluminum foil is only $1.42 at Walmart, I know which technique I'll be trying first...

An organizing to-do list can get overwhelmingly long quickly. From drawers to cupboards to closets to entire rooms, there's a sense that it all has to be done at once.

But what if you didn't have to think about it all at once? What if the path to a fully organized home could begin with a commitment of 20 minutes or less? In our exclusive interview with Bobby Berk on his partnership with Spotify, he assured us that this is absolutely the case.

When asked his top organizational tip, Berk responded: 'None of these are rocket science or something groundbreaking, but you know, a lot of times people have a really hard time just starting. Just starting the project. They'll try to take on something too big like they'll want to organize their entire closet and that can be a lot.'

Instead of making this common home organization mistake, Berk recommends taking on your reorganizing in much smaller chunks.

Berk told Homes & Gardens: 'I always say start out small start with your junk drawer or, start with your bathroom cabinet. Because once you complete one of those zones and have a sense of achievement, it gives you those endorphins and catapults you on to do more.'

Taking these small, achievable steps can help you fall in love with organizing. When it becomes about a sense of accomplishment, it's all the easier to become invested (and don't forget we have incredible guides for organizing each smaller zone of the home on our site!).

He continued, 'So start small. Don't try to clean out your whole garage in one day because you're gonna get discouraged and you're not going to finish it and it's going to prevent you from doing other things. This week, it was announced that Jeremiah Brent will be taking over Bobby Berk's former role as interior designer on Netflix's popular makeover show Queer Eye.

Though we love Jeremiah and are excited about his upcoming projects, it's a bittersweet goodbye. Bobby has been there since the beginning with his impeccable taste and his Southern charm. Throughout his eight seasons of Queer Eye, the interior design maven has, again and again, demonstrated the power of design. From making Wesley Hamilton's home wheelchair accessible to the empowering makeover of fan-favorite Jess Guilbeaux's home, Bobby has made it his project to change lives. It's sad to see him go.

We could wax about the designer's Queer Eye home decor legacy, but luckily, you don't have to take it from us. In December, H&G interviewed Bobby.

It was right after the announcement that he was leaving the show before we knew anything about his replacement or what he was doing next. When asked about his design legacy, Bobby explained that he has a lot to be proud of.

'I am proud of my design legacy on the show.' He continued, 'I think it was my goal to show people that design can really change your life and that design doesn't have to be fancy. Design can be accessible,' Bobby told H&G exclusively.

Through his numerous world-altering interior design tips and makeovers on the show, Bobby certainly did exactly this. In each episode, it was easy to see the participants standing taller in their own homes and taking ownership of their spaces. Furthermore, Bobby set out to show that decorating on a budget doesn't mean you can't create a fabulous space, a goal he feels he has accomplished.

Throughout the show, Bobby emphasized how interior design can impact wellbeing. This is another part of his legacy that Bobby feels very proud of. He told us: 'Simply the act of organizing your home and making your home a safe space for you is really important for mental health. So I'm very proud of the legacy that I've been able to leave and showing people how important design really is.'

Jeremiah Brent is joining Queer Eye's Fab Five following Bobby Berk’s exit last season

After Bobby Berk's departure from Queer Eye's Fab Five last season, we had spent months in the dark about which designer would take his place. However, the wait is over. Today, Netflix confirmed Jeremiah Brent is joining the team and will travel to Las Vegas to film season 9 this spring.

Jeremiah already has quite the enviable résumé. He kickstarted his career as a fashion stylist and Rachel Zoe's assistant and appeared on The Rachel Zoe Project before starring alongside his husband, Nate Berkus, on HGTV’s Nate & Jeremiah by Design and The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project. He also appeared as an interior design expert on Netflix’s Say I Do, a series developed by the same creators as Queer Eye.

Beyond television, Jeremiah owns an eponymous design firm (that specializes in residential, commercial, and hospitality design in Los Angeles and New York City) and Atrio, a curated furniture store.

Jeremiah will join his four co-stars who each have their own speciality in the makeover show. Tan France focuses on fashion, Jonathan Van Ness on grooming, Antoni Porowski on food and wine, and Karamo Brown on culture. Bobby Berk spent eight seasons as the show's interior design expert, working on designing and decorating the homes under tight time pressure. He announced his exit in November.

'It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on Queer Eye. It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with Queer Eye is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon,' he shared via an Instagram post.

'To all our wonderful, loving, amazing, and brave heroes, there is so much I want to say and express so much gratitude to you all for letting me into your homes and hearts. It’s all because of you that I’ve kept going all these years, and each and every one of you have changed me for the better,' Bobby adds.

Though the replies covered a wide range of possibilities, Bobby threw his own prediction into the mix, and it was a bit out of the box – according to Bobby, 'surprising murals' might just be all the rage for the new year.

We spoke with designers to see whether they agreed with the artistic prediction, plus whether they thought Bobby's followers were on the right track. Here's what they had to say.

Though certainly a statement, a wall mural can bring an otherwise simple space to life. Covering an entire surface or just a small portion of a blank wall, murals are completely customizable, and make your house truly feel like home.

Homes & Gardens got the chance to speak with the iconic designer about his partnership with Spotify, and he told us he swears against designing based on what's trending.

Bobby told H&G exclusively: 'I always say that I'm anti-trend,' when asked about his relationship to interior design trends. He continued: I'm anti-trend because I really believe that you should design for what makes you happy.' Bobby embraces this philosophy in all aspects of his life, from encouraging people to create unique soundscapes for their home using Spotify to striking out on his own to create a Bobby Berk design show.

However, to Bobby, ignoring home decor trends is about more than marching to the tune of your own drummer; it also has a surprising financial motivation. Though Bobby believes that trends in general are an interior design mistake, there is one he especially dislikes. He told us: ' There is a trend that I'm sick of. In LA they keep tearing down cute little bungalows and building modern farmhouse mega-mansions. They have the wire and the a-frame and the black and the stone and...it's just it's too much. There are just too many different materials on them. My rule of thumb for the exterior of a home is it should have no more than three materials- if it has more than three materials it starts to look like a Vegas casino.'

Bobby Berk, expert interior designer and Queer Eye alum knows this, that's why he recommends a kitchen cabinet color that will never date.

Bobby told H&G exclusively in our interview on his partnership with Spotify, 'I am a huge fan of black kitchen cabinets. I think they create a great balance if you're using a lot of other whites in the kitchen.' He continued on the black kitchen idea, 'I love black cabinets with a light countertop and backsplash because I think it makes for a dramatic kitchen.' Bobby amps up the drama with his Spotify Daylist, a unique blend of music curated for him daily to turn his kitchen into an audio oasis.

The Queer Eye designer adds that dark kitchen cabinets are easy to style. He states: 'The thing about black cabinets is you're able to change the other things in the space without major disruption. For instance, if you have a trendy kitchen countertop now, in 10 years you can change your countertop and things are still going to go with black cabinets.'

Furthermore, Bobby thinks this color, along with white cabinets, will be in style forever. 'I think black and white cabinets are completely timeless.' He continues, 'I think these cabinets will never go out of style because the great thing about doing black or white cabinets as opposed to a color is that they aren't associated with a particular time.' He adds: 'Some people would say wood kitchen cabinets are timeless, but I disagree. Some wood tones are very decade specific.'

Though he concedes 'I think colors are very relative for different people. Colors make different people feel different ways' he still recommends caution before choosing a kitchen cabinet color trend over a classic shade. Bobby states: 'Trendy cabinet colors like greens and blues, especially that very popular sage green, will eventually date your home. For example, in the late 90s hunter green was super popular and when you see hunter green you're just like instantly like "oh 1996, yeah yeah I was there."'

We were lucky enough to speak with Bobby and learn more about his philosophy surrounding how music can enhance the experience of being at home and turn interior design into a lived art.

Bobby told H&G, 'In my book, Right at Home: How Good Design Is Good for the Mind, I talk about how you should design with your senses. A lot of times people think of interior design as just something that you see, but I don't believe that. I believe that interior design is about a fully immersive experience. Not just what you see, but what you feel, smell, and hear.'

He continued, 'Music has such the ability, as we all know, to change your whole mood. I like music that speaks to the architecture and the design of a home. You know, if I'm throwing a party at a friend's super modern house, I'll play some cool house music that goes with the vibe of the modern house. I think it just enhances people's experience and makes my interior design look even better.' As Bobby says, matching the rhythm of your interior design can improve the entire experience of a space.

'One example I always talk about is I have a house in the desert that we have on Airbnb,' Bobby went on, describing his desert oasis Airbnb. 'We rent it out, and I like to set a vibe. It's in the desert, it's Spanish hacienda architecture and we've put outdoor speakers throughout the whole property and inside the property. When we have guests coming, I always have this cool modern Spanish guitar playlist on.'

He went on, 'Because the gates are open throughout the entire property, you just hear the Spanish guitar going. Even though it's my home, and it's not necessarily "vacation mode" to me anymore, when I pull up and that's on, I'm like instantly in "vacation mode."'

This created the opportunity to store decorative items on the open shelves and practical storage in the credenza, while adding structure to the open-plan living space, creating zones for dining and cooking separately, while still ensuring light can still travel between the spaces.

2. Stairs with storage drawers

The use of drawers in stairs in the episode 'The Ideal Woman' in Queer Eye Japan (38 minutes into the episode) is one of our favorite inspired storage ideas.

In a space that seemed too compact to design with a large amount of storage space without taking up half the room, Bobby took multi-functional storage to the next level by installing stairs with drawers in the risers.

It's a seamless integration that not only maximizes space but also adds elegant ingenuity to the often underutilized area beneath the stairs.

Although a staircase up to a bed more capacious option than alternatives, such as ladders, the choice of this staircase is the perfect addition, being both aesthetically pleasing, convenient, and functioning as much-needed storage space – which would not be achieved with a different option.

Although this idea is not necessarily suitable for every space, it works perfectly in this bedroom – where there is no need for a banister, which can make it difficult to access drawers in stairs – but rather is the ideal option, keeping storage at eye level.

This idea can be used to organize under the stairs with the incorporation of drawer dividers for smaller items, such as stationery or clothing.

3. Under-bed fold out desk and storage

In the episode 'Bringing Sexy Back', also in Queer Eye Japan (37 mins into the episode), Bobby Berk pulls off potentially the most impressive room transformation across the whole show, where he converts a cramped bedroom into a stylish space that has triple the functionality it had before.

Bobby elevates the bed, making room for under-bed storage, including a seating area below which is equipped with a fold-down desk. This also includes plenty of storage including alcoves with baskets, drawers, and hooks beneath the bed, plus drawers in the stairs up to the bed. This leaves the 'hero' of the episode, Makoto, space to play music, work, and enough space for an adjacent couch and bookshelf.

'When people have a smaller space you need to utilize every square foot of your space both vertical and Horizontal,' Bobby says in the episode.

This spectacularly designed bed with so much storage space is the perfect example of how considering the requirements of the space and the needs of the individual, you can find clever solutions, combining storage with functional furniture.

Recently, he designed a specialty room for the Living by Design Virtual Showhouse. This awe-inspiring project is revolutionizing the way we think about design. It offers top designers the chance to design a shoppable living space in an interactive virtual home. This year, Bobby was chosen to design a great room for the space.

Since he became famous on a show that specializes in teaching those who don't have a firm grasp on their personal style to find confidence in design, it makes sense that Bobby is kind enough to always start with the basics. He opened his Instagram video with the question 'Do you know what a great room is?.' Honestly, we needed the refresher.

'A great room is typically a multi-use room. It can be used as a living room, a family room, a lounge, a TV room.' Says Bobby. 'It's really just called a great room 'cause it's great,' he jokes. In other words, the great room includes all of the usual uses of a living room but tends to be a bit grander and more central in the home than a more traditional den-style living room idea.

Bobby goes on to share the most important design ideas he kept in mind when creating his virtual great room. 'I'm taking a modern approach,' says Bobby, about designing the virtual space. 'I'm all about balance in design. If I'm going to use dark pieces, I like to balance them with light pieces. When I'm doing some wood on the wall, I like to balance that with some light fabrics, like this boucle,' he continues, holding up a swatch of white boucle material.

'If you'll notice, there's lots of nice warm tones in the warm woods on the wall. We may know Bobby Berk as a leading figure in contemporary design (not least thanks to his role on Netflix's Queer Eye) – but some of his most impactful tricks are rooted in ancient history.

The designer recently sat down with H&G to discuss the art of small-room styling following his recent collaboration with Command™. So, consequently, we had to ask, what is the one way to make a small room feel bigger instantly? And while we can't say we were shocked by his response – we were reminded just exactly how impactful this took can be.

'I always recommend mirrors. When you don’t have any more space, you can create the illusion of space. You can see forever through them and reflect light around your room,' Bobby says.

Reflective surfaces made of polished obsidian are believed to be the oldest 'mirrors' in the archaeological record, dating back to 4000 BC. It, therefore, goes without saying mirrors have influenced spaces longer than any other home furnishing – so how should we style them today?

'You can hang a really good-sized mirror with a Command stip. I would opt for a full-length mirror and introduce multiple of them if you wish,' Bobby says. 'That will instantly make your space look much larger. I know that it’s an age-old trick, but it really is legit.'

'Your home should really spark joy for you; it should recharge you. Everything in your home should be making you happy. Similarly, when working with a small living room, Bobby says we should start with something that also promotes joy.

'Start with something that makes you happy, and that excites you. People don’t know whether to start with the sofa, the rug, or the art, but it’s whatever piece speaks to you the most,' he says.

'If you find something that makes you happy when you look at it, that's where you should start. You should build from that piece because if that makes you smile, then the other pieces that go with it are probably going to as well.'

Vice President Kamala Harris famously lives at Number One Observatory Circle, one of the most iconic residences in the country – but while much is known about the home's history, its interiors are notably more mysterious. Or at least, they were until now.

If anybody were to introduce us to Vice President's design decisions, it would have to be Bobby Berk, Netflix's Queer Eye star, who visited Kamala Harris this week. 'Went to DC and got a private tour of the VP's house from the VP,' the designer shared via Instagram. 'Such an honor to meet you, Madam Vice President. Thank you for being such an amazing champion for equality.'

Bobby shared a rare glimpse inside Kamala's living space – where stand-out features include the built-in bookshelves and artwork above the fireplace. However, while its architectural assets and storage solutions are something to note, we can't help but feel more distracted by its strikingly patriotic living room color scheme.

How can you strike a balance between red, white, and blue without overly saturating your space? While these colors (particularly red) can be hard to get right, the Vice President's living room offers an inspiring starting point that is subtly patriotic.

As mentioned, decorating with red can be tricky, but the Vice President has balanced her red wallpaper and rug with white-painted shelving (and the white fireplace), bringing a sense of calmness to the otherwise vibrant space. And, while the white paint has its design benefits, we'd say it's also a nod to the flag – with two of the three colors working harmoniously together in the space.

While we admit there is no significant amount of blue in the room, there are some varying hints of the shade on the bookshelves – most notably on the top left side alongside her gray vase. As we suggested, though, the space is subtly patriotic – and we think she's got the balance just right.

Number One Observatory Circle (also often referred to as the Naval Observatory) is the Vice President's official residence, meaning it is currently home to Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff, the Second Gentleman of the United States.

The house, located on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C, was designed by architect Leon E. Dessez and built in 1893 for $20,000 (today, equivalent to around $651,407). It was initially constructed for the observatory superintendent; however, the chief of naval operations reportedly liked the house so much that in 1923 he took it over for himself.

Over the years, the Vice President has welcomed countless foreign leaders, dignitaries, and celebrities to their homes, and the Naval Observatory has continued to operate. According to the government website, the site is used by scientists who observe the sun, moon, and planets to publish astronomical data needed for accurate navigation.

The Queer Eye host dispenses design tips daily – but which piece of advice does he hold above all else? Mastering good lighting, says Bobby, is the single most transformative thing we can do for our homes.

'The easiest and quickest way to elevate a room is with lighting, and it can be the cheapest, too' Bobby says in an exclusive interview with H&G. He recently teamed up with TriPointe to bring his decorating advice to life in homes in Arroyo's Edge, Las Vegas.

'You can make the nastiest warehouse building look like a chic cool space for a fashion show with the right lighting – and the same goes for your house.'

Lighting is a broad topic of discussion – covering bedroom light levels (for sleep), kitchen lights (that are often more practical), and living room lighting that is ambient for relaxing and hosting. However, while Bobby recognizes that each room is different – he has a way to elevate almost every space: uplighting.

'Uplighting is a great way to make your house look really chic or really cool,' Bobby says.

'You can get great can lights that sit on the ground [such as the lights from Etsy below] – they are nearly the size of a can – and shoot light upwards. Then you flood your walls with light from the lower areas of your room – it just makes everything look very chic.'

Freestanding Bamboo Floor Lamp

This large, freestanding floor lamp is an effective way to experiment with uplighting – creating a chic, therapeutic space while flirting with the bamboo trend. We'd say it's the most stylish way to follow Bobby's advice.

So uplighting is very much approved, but what does Bobby avoid?

'Overhead lighting is your worst enemy,' he says. 'No one wants a space with overhead lighting, but if you do have it, a great way to fix that is to use a dimmer [like this one on Amazon].'

That way, when we need bright light when getting ready or cleaning, we can power up our lighting – but can quickly bring the levels back down – for a calmer, designer-approved home.

'Lighting is a quick and very inexpensive way to transform your space and make it feel much brighter, happier, and chicer at night. So, lighting is a really inexpensive way to change the look of a room without having to put much in it,' he adds.

'It's one of the big things that people don’t think about': Bobby Berk's paint trick will change how you see color

The Emmy-winning television host, author, and Netflix star is, above all, an interior designer – and his most famed projects are far from color shy. Most recently, he worked with Tri Pointe Homes to design three units in Arroyo's Edge, Las Vegas – none of which are immune from his daring room color ideas. Naturally, Bobby's choice of hues is perfect – but what's his secret?

'My biggest color rule (and my biggest rule in design – period) is to pick something that you love, and that makes you happy. I don't have a rule that states the colors you choose – but I do have rules on how you should choose those colors,' Bobby says in an interview with H&G. The tip, according to Bobby, is to 'date' your paint swatches before diving into a 'committed relationship.'

'One of the big things that people don’t think about is that colors look different throughout the day. A color that feels bright and happy during the day might be dark and drab at night,' the designer says.

Bobby recommends choosing a few different tones before painting a 10x10″ square on your wall and assessing how the paints change throughout the day – depending on the amount of light that’s coming into your home.

'You can see if it becomes drabby and not happy because the night is when we’re all usually in at our homes – especially in winter when it gets dark,' he says. 'Think about the way that color is going to look at night. See how that feels to you.'

Though, in excitement, it can be tempting to pick up a tone that appears perfect for your home, Bobby warns that, sometimes, it can feel like a 'horrible mistake.'

'A lot of times, people love a swatch – they’ll go to a store and buy it and get it home, and they’ll paint their whole room. Then, a couple of days later, they’ll realize it was a horrible mistake. It’s either too bright or too drab or too dark,' he adds.

'Don’t just jump into a relationship with color – date it. Take it out to dinner. Have a sleepover with it for a little bit before going into a full-on relationship. Painting a 10X10″ square on the wall will allow you to live with it before any commitment.'

'Make small spaces do double-duty': Bobby Berk explains his mantra for maximizing your rooms

Bobby Berk may be a globally recognized designer, but he's still no stranger to compact urban apartments – meaning he's a master at styling small spaces that are functional and good-looking.

The Los Angeles-based design expert & Emmy-nominated TV host moved to the West Coast via New York, where he lived in compact apartments that, he shares, have influenced design decisions in homes of every size.

'I lived in New York for years, and I always made sure that whatever I was putting into my space did double duty,' Bobby says in an exclusive interview with H&G. The designer recently teamed up with Tri Pointe Homes to design units located in Arroyo's Edge, Las Vegas. The project allowed him to revisit the art of decorating small spaces – something that he mastered from experience.

'If I were looking for a coffee table, I would go with storage cubes that had storage in them that I could use as a coffee table, but I could also use it as extra seating when friends would come over,' Bobby explains. 'If I had a desk, I would also use it as something that could fold out to become a dining table.'

According to Bobby, the most impactful thing you can do in a small home is to buy double-duty furniture – and avoid (where possible) investing in pieces that only serve a single job. 'Try to buy things that do at least two things, and you’re going to be much better off,' he says.

Double-duty furnishings makes organizing small spaces easier, as you can use items such as your coffee table to store things you would prefer to keep out of sight. But Bobby's tips for organizing a small apartment (or home) don't end there.

'I lived in a tiny home, so I always had to think about that, even when designing larger homes. If you have a small bedroom, you should get a bed that has drawers underneath or buy a platform that raises the bed so that you can use it for other things,' Bobby says. 'Make sure you’re using the space from side to side and also top to bottom.'

Naturally, Bobby has the same ideology for small kitchens and bathrooms, too.

'Really over-utilize the areas underneath the kitchen cabinets and the bathroom cabinets, and organize them. Go out to a store and buy an extra shelf for your small cabinets,' Bobby says.

'Make sure you're maximizing that space because there are so many spaces in our homes that can really do double duty – that can really make our homes more organized, but we're only using them the way they are built instead of thinking about the way they could really be used. Utilize your space from top to bottom, not just side to side.'

Is bigger always better? Whatever your stance on this, Bobby Berk believes that even the most compact spaces can be turned into something beautiful – and we're certainly inclined to agree.

The design expert & Emmy-nominated TV host sat down to talk design with H&G – following his latest endeavor with TriPointe Homes. The units, located in Arroyo's Edge, Las Vegas, serve as a trove of inspiration for making small rooms look bigger and fresh room color ideas – playing with a Scandicool, Mid-century aesthetic that appeals to their target audience (those with specific lifestyles who want a designer-approved base that won't fall out of style).

The homes offered Bobby a blank canvas to experiment with color – something that gave him time to reminisce on another project that taught him how to master decorating small spaces: his parent's home.

'A few years ago, I redesigned my parent's house, and it was a particular challenge because it was a compact size,' Bobby says. 'It had low ceilings and a lack of natural light. To overcome it, I started by painting all the interiors white, which gives it a seamless flow and brightened everything up.'

Whatever your small room ideas, Bobby Berk's color rule remains the same: go white.

'Before [the renovation], my mum had the kitchen painted terracotta, the living room was a khaki color, and the front porch was yellow. What a lot of people don’t understand is – when they have smaller spaces – and you paint them in different colors – you’re actually making them feel even smaller,' Bobby says.

You would be forgiven for believing that any bright-colored paint can elevate a compact room – but as Bobby explains, it can have quite the opposite effect.

'Many people think a bright color will make it feel bright and airy, but it doesn’t. Your eye automatically categorizes each space which is a different color, as a different space, Bobby says. 'When you’re already working with small spaces, and you’re making them even smaller by breaking them down by color – it makes them feel even more compact.'

Knowing what colors make a small room look big is the most impactful thing you can do in a compact home – and Bobby recommends going white – but that doesn't mean you need to veto all vibrancy completely.

'When working with a smaller space, try to make all the walls the same color. Try to work with white. It makes things look bigger and brighter. Then, you bring in your personality through the colors in the rugs, pillows, and a little bit of wallpaper,' the designer says.

'Make everything cohesive with the wall color, and when it comes to furniture, I use furniture that’s on a smaller scale. Scale is super important in design.'

Yes, when learning how to make a small room look bigger – color is key. However, as Bobby mentioned, scale is also vital to sucsess.

'A lot of people, when they go to buy a sofa, chose one that is only comfortable. Yes, you do want one that is comfortable, but you also want one that works with the scale of the room,' he says.'

'If you have a room with lower ceilings, you don’t want to buy a sofa that has a really tall back. You want to choose something that will elongate the walls and is more to scale with the room. Armless chairs and mirrors are a great way to make compact spaces feel better.'

However, color is arguably the most impactful way to inject personality without getting in the way of your appliances or overcrowding your countertops. From deep black to olive green, these designer-approved kitchen colors will look good in any home. The only question is which one you should choose.

'Color has the power to express your emotions and transform your home,' Bobby Berk says. 'Break out your paint brushes for all of my favorite shades for your space.'

Fertilizing with Epsom salts is a great way to give your plants a boost of magnesium – an element that they need to grow and thrive. 'It is an essential nutrient that helps with photosynthesis and the overall health of the plant,' adds Rodger St. Hilaire, an expert from Gardening Boost.

Without adequate magnesium levels in the soil, your plants will show signs of nutrient deficiency (such as yellowing or stunted growth). But what does the Epsom salt process involve?

1. Using Epsom salts to fertilize your soil directly

Firstly, Bobby Berk recommends taking a teaspoon of Epsom salt and placing it directly into your plant's soil. If you're applying the salt directly, then you should aim for one teaspoon of salt per foot of size approximately once every month. And while this tip is useful for gardens, it's also suitable for your best indoor plants too.

2. Mixing Epsom salt with water

Alternatively, you can take another teaspoon and mix it in a cup of water before 'lightly [spraying] it on the leaves.' If you don't have a sprayer [such as this spray gun on Amazon] – and experiment with placing it directly into the soil in the meantime. 'It's as easy as that,' Bobby explains. Rodger suggests applying this solution to your plants every 2-4 weeks.

The Epsom Salt Council also recommends using around 'two tablespoons per gallon of water' to feed house plants monthly. Meanwhile, you should use 'one tablespoon per nine square feet' on shrubs and evergreens every two to four weeks.

3. Adding Epsom salt to your compost pile

'The magnesium in Epsom salts helps to break down organic matter, making it easier for plants to access the nutrients they need,' Rodger says. 1. Ensuring people trust the Fab 5 implicitly

‘One of the biggest challenges in working on Queer Eye is also one of my favorite aspects. I love how truly blind we walk into our heroes' story and have little time to transform them, their space and deliver a wow-factor moment every time,’ the 39-year-old designer tells H&G. ‘We know next to nothing about them before we meet them, yet we have this incredible way to ensure they are comfortable and trust us.’

The Emmy-nominated television personality, who hosts the beloved series alongside the equally talented and fabulous Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown and Antoni Porowski, says that while the pandemic may have temporarily put the world on hold, the team is returning to the Lone Star state to resume filming season 6.

‘I am excited to reconnect with my QE family and get back to Austin where we left off right before COVID hit,’ he gushes. ‘Austin has such an infectious and welcoming culture that I can’t wait to hear from our heroes and see what we can do for them with the rest of the Fab 5.’

3. Marrying form with function

As for Bobby’s favorite makeover? The designer reflects back to season 4 where the Queer Eye team worked to transform hero Wesley’s life. ‘He lived in a space that wasn’t as accessible as he needed it to be for his wheelchair. We tore down walls, lowered the height of counters and made sure he had enough room to get around,’ Bobby explains of the makeover’s challenges.

‘I wanted to make it a space that functioned for him and wasn’t just “pretty.” Design is about marrying form and function to best suit the needs of the person that lives there, and I love that I am able to do that for our heroes.’

4. Finding time for creative inspiration

Adding to the Texas native’s already impressive resume, the star, who says he’s used time in quarantine to focus on his personal projects and relationship with his husband Dewey Do, is celebrating the success of his debut furniture line with A.R.T. Furniture.

‘During this time, I have not only connected with my space and the walls in which we live more, but also my husband,’ he explains. ‘Creativity comes when you’re inspired, and being around my husband and my home has ignited my love for Los Angeles and the city views. We have been able to slow down, enjoy nature, and it has helped my creativity tremendously.’

With his creative juices flowing and a new outlook on life, the best-selling author says he has no plans to slow down. ‘I am now more focused and present in what I am working on and continue to connect to the outdoors and stillness of the city before I begin traveling again,’ Bobby admits. ‘The silver lining in all of this for me has been being with my husband more, and now together making our house a home.’

Michelle says the secret is to add mirrored plinths to your cabinets to create a similar ‘floating’ effect.

The expert suggests that introducing a mirrored plinth in your bathroom or kitchen will create the illusion of a larger floor – and ‘when you make the floor look bigger – the whole room looks bigger.’

Her reflective technique creates the same effect as a hanging vanity because the floor appears larger. ‘It is very subtle, but it does have that effect,’ she adds.

‘I always recommend mixing up materials when pairing your bedroom furniture,’ Bobby shared when asked if wooden nightstands need to match.

1. Mix and match your nightstands

He expanded on the common nightstand design mistake, sharing that a ‘mix and match approach will feel a lot more unique (and interesting) than a matching bedroom set.' This is because it allows you to create a contrast. Nightstands are the perfect way to make a statement as you can place different shades of wood, so they sit symmetrically opposite one another.

2. Choose the right wood for your nightstand

And, as Bobby Berk emphasizes, it is important not to choose woods that are similar as they ‘tend to look a design mistake when placed together.’

‘Instead, try pairing lighter and darker together, whether it’s brown, grey whitewashed, ebony, or any type of finish,’ he says. ‘For a walnut dresser, I would recommend nightstands in medium oak or black, both of which are distinctly different and provide plenty of contrast.’

Plus, Bobby Berk is not alone in his observations. K&H Design's co-founder, Katie Glaister, similarly explains the importance of choosing the right wood for your room. However, rather than choosing contrastable colors, Katie suggests choosing different stains and finishes.

‘When combining different wood types in a bedroom, it’s important to think about tones and grain,’ she says. ‘To create a scheme with layers and depth, you could use similar tones for the floor and joinery whilst choosing woods with different grains.’

‘Even a room that’s lacking in color can still be bursting with visual appeal. In fact, I love working with a neutral color palette because it can really translate into any design style. But the key to doing it successfully is to embrace a variety of elements that will add interest,’ Bobby says. But how do you add interest?

1. Layer statement neutrals

‘Think about pieces that draw your eye, like sculptural vases, patterned pillows, or a graphic rug. Layering these items will make a room come to life, even when using only neutral shades,’ he explains.

The designer continues, explaining how to mix patterns in a room in a way that adds instant interest to your room. ‘These pieces can also bring in an array of tones and patterns that will make the space feel much more dynamic, too.’

Bobby also suggests interrupting a neutral scheme with artwork, which, he says, is another ‘excellent way to add interest. ‘Consider using a mix of different media, scale, and framing styles,’ he adds.

2. Combine contrasting materials

‘You’ll want to combine materials and textures, which will create contrast and a sense of dimension. A room without a lot of color can tend to look really flat when you stick with similar materials,’ Bobby explains. So, which textures does he recommend using?

‘That’s why I like to bring in warm wood tones, stone, and textured accessories that will create a sense of depth.’

3. Create a varied scheme with upholstered furniture

‘Upholstered furniture is another way of varying a scheme, by pairing smoother fabrics (like velvet or leather) with chunkier, woven knits,’ Bobby suggests. He recommends adding natural accessories such as woven baskets, plants, and a dried branches for an organic aesthetic.

After painting and laying down your rug, the best-selling author gives the green light to add furniture. ‘I like to mix a sofa with two chairs vs. pairing two sofas in a room as it makes the pieces more conversational together and also breaks up the “matchy matchy” look,’ he says.

4. Good lighting is key

The Emmy-nominated personality says the right lighting scheme is key to a well-lit room.

‘I like to have three different types of lighting. They typically will consist of “overhead lighting,” which will come from the overhead fixtures you have, “diffused lighting” which can come in through a fabric lampshade or opaque glass shade, and “task lighting” which will come from directional lamps or task lights.’

As for the final look, Bobby says implementing his lighting techniques will help illuminate the space, making it appear lighter and brighter. ‘Adding multiple focal points to your room to keep eyes bouncing around so it appears much bigger than it is.’

By keeping things within the same tonal palette, the space will feel larger and more cohesive, which will allow it to feel less disjointed.’

2. Paint with bold colors

The Texas native dispels the myth that painting a small room in a dark or bold color will make it appear smaller. ‘It can sometimes even make the room appear larger and more dramatic. But there are a few things to pay attention to when going dark in a small space.’

‘If you decide to go dark with your walls then keep things more monochromatic elsewhere. The drama will come in through the dark color on your walls so you don’t need to bring in a lot of other color or pattern,’ says Bobby.

4. Choose the right paint sheen

Bobby points out that not all paint sheens are created equally or will work for every room. ‘In a smaller space, we usually like to use a matte finish – anywhere from flat to eggshell – the matte finish will help to hide imperfections in the wall which will help the dark color feel more expansive visually.’

5. Pick slim storage

When styling a small space, the television personality says slim is in – especially when it comes to storage. ‘You’ll be amazed at how much you can store in narrow shelving units that tuck right into compact spaces,’ he explains.

‘Slim shelves are perfect for holding cooking supplies in the kitchen and can fit conveniently between a stove and counter.’

The designer also suggests investing in a leaning desk which you can tuck into a corner of a living room or bedroom. ‘They can provide plenty of storage without taking up much space, all while doing double duty as a workspace.’

6. Your bed – reimagined

The design guru notes that if you’re short on closets or lacking drawer space, take a second look at the vacant space underneath your bed.

‘It’s the perfect place to look for extra space to keep clothing, shoes, or anything else that needs to be organized. With just a few extra inches below the bed, you can use boxes, bins with easy access lids, and bags to keep things contained.’

7. Differentiating between spaces

When it comes to a small open-concept space, Bobby notes the importance of creating distinctions between areas to avoid overcrowding.

‘Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean that you have to specifically designate each area visually,’ he explains. ‘It doesn’t need to appear that you have an office in one corner, an eating area in another corner and a bedroom in a separate corner. Let the spaces speak to each other, and you can always use one space for multiple uses.’

8. Mirror, mirror

One of Bobby’s favorite tricks to opening up a small space? Incorporating a beautiful mirror to add depth. ‘You don’t need one on every wall, but an oversized floor mirror or decorative hanging mirror in place of art will trick your eye into thinking that there is double the amount of space. It will also bounce the natural light around the room making it appear larger.’

9. Light it up

Bobby believes that investing in good lighting is key when creating a scheme for a space.

‘In every room, I like to have three different types of lighting. They typically will consist of “overhead lighting,” which will come from the overhead fixtures you have, “diffused lighting” which can come in through a fabric lampshade or opaque glass shade, and “task lighting” which will come from directional lamps or task lights,’ he explains.

‘Once all three are in a room, they not only will illuminate the space to seem lighter and brighter but will add multiple focal points to your room to keep eyes bouncing around so it appears much bigger than it is.’

Bobby Berk is an author, television star, and, above all, a celebrated interior designer who is well-known for his passion for creating trendy, colorful, and individual interiors.

Recently, we discovered his favorite shade of the color that is on everybody's minds at the moment – green. The shade that has graced our interiors so prominently this year shows no signs of wavering in popularity as we continue to look for ways to drench our homes in natural elements that provoke feelings of escapism and renewal.

With so many emerald tones on the market, though, we can only welcome Bobby's expertise about which shade works best in our kitchens.

Bobby Berk's green paint suggestions

Bobby Berk's blog is a fantastic place to pick up interior design tips, including the designer's favorite paints. In a recent post, Bobby rounded up the green kitchens that received the most admiration on his Instagram to share the paints both he and his followers love the most.

1. Create contrast with a leafy forest green

Stealing the crown as Bobby Berk's favorite green shade is Sherwin-Williams's Kendal Green – a raw leafy color that creates a flow with the outside and gives a home the charming allure of a country farmhouse.

Bobby celebrates the contrast achieved by designer Jaclyn Peterson who combines the fresh shade with 'slick, blacklight fixtures,' which 'manages to tie all the elements together.'

In conversation with Homes & Gardens, Jaclyn expanded on the highly admired tones of her green kitchen, sharing how she designed the space for a young family who was renovating their 'dated farmhouse' in rural Manitoba, Canada.

'They both love color and wanted a kitchen that was cozy, warm, inviting, and functional to host large gatherings for their family and friends,' she says.

'They have a view of trees and endless fields of crops, so green just felt like the perfect color for the cabinets. I softened the overall look with white oak details, black lighting, and a white quartz countertop. They are still in love with their kitchen four years later,' Jaclyn adds.

2. Soften a statement green with a soft white hue

Following closely in Kendal Green's footsteps is Bobby's second favorite green paint –Absolute Green by Benjamin Moore.

Bobby compliments designer Faith Blakeney for her daring injection of this exciting shade, which she balances with 'lots of white to keep things from feeling overwhelmed.'

'We wanted this kitchen to have some Californian fun flair, with the fine craftsmanship, attention to detail, and old-world charm that you can find in old English kitchens. We opened up the ceiling and uncovered the true grandeur of the space,' Faith shares.

The designer continues, suggesting she chose to combine the bright white shade with a color that has been her favorite since she was a young girl.

'There is a green for every season,' Faith declares. 'I believe that the green is having a moment right now because of its inextricable and often subconscious association with nature. Particularly as we have all been cooped up in our homes for the past year, bringing the outdoors inside with color can have a truly calming and nurturing effect on our soul.'

3. Pair green with brassy & metallic tones

Alternatively, among Bobby Berk's favorite kitchen green paint picks is Sherwin-Williams's Greenfield, and Benjamin Moore's Sagebrush, and Jackpine Jack Pine – the latter 'perfectly complements the light wood tones and brass accents of a kitchen,' Bobby suggests.
