'We always advise that clients think carefully about how they want to use the island; for some, they want a social hub; for others, more space for storage or a food prep area. Also, we advise considering how the island looks from the back; this is often the side that faces the room and provides an opportunity to add personality with interesting finishes or storage.'

As Dave explains, kitchen islands are a 'mainstay in our kitchens, providing a place to cook, dine and socialize,' but their aesthetic shouldn't be overlooked. You can have the best of both and incorporate an island that complements your interior scheme and adds further character to your room.

'Metal kitchens might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re planning a remodel, but in my experience, they’re one of the smartest, most practical choices out there. 'It holds up, it looks good, and it makes life easier in a way that other materials often don’t.'

When I've imaged my ideal outdoor space, it's always looked like the garden of eden: wild, untamed vines, verdant evergreens, and bursting with succulent fruit and flowers. However, without significant time to dedicate to gardening or the budget for a professional landscaper, this idea is a much better fantasy than reality. Diane Keaton's courtyard provides the perfect solution. It's completely remade my dream garden.

The actress's interior designer, Stephen Shadley, shared images of her gorgeous former home, now owned by Ryan Murphy and his husband, and it's hard not to be instantly enchanted by her stunning courtyard garden idea. If you live outside the reaches of Spain, Malta, Italy, and Greece, it can be difficult to keep the plants of this region alive. However, integrating the cool plaster and warming brick harkens to the history of the area using just materials. A few well-placed trees and potted plants can bring in greenery in a simpler and easier-to-maintain way.

I was also inspired by Keaton's courtyard because it strikes me as the perfect small garden idea. As a committed city-dweller, it's hard to imagine pulling out a lawn mower, pruners, and shovels to care for the 5 foot by 5 foot plots that constitute gardens in central London. However, a tiled-over space with potted plants on top feels the perfect solution. For a more colorful look, I saw a similar outdoor space in an Instagram reel of the Dusen Dusen founder's New York City apartment patio, where the whole space is tiled over in mosaics. She has also left space around the edges for potted plants. It's full of personality, but easy to care for and convenient in a city space.

'The interior designer Elsie de Wolfe wrote in 1913 that you must never place a chair on its own in a room; she was very shy herself and noted that it is always the shy person who arrives first, sits on the lone chair and then is often rooted there for the whole party. But two next to each other does not always work, either. I find that two people sitting side by side do not always speak to each other, so having an occasional chair pulled in at a diagonal can create conversational triangles.'

'This is ingenious and feels like a natural progression of the expression of how we now live in and use our homes. Blurring the line between a home’s functional and private spaces and its more public and shared spaces in a way that is both seamless and eye-opening at the same time!'

'Be bold, but not frantic, with color,' says designer and hotelier Kit Kemp. 'For example, too much red is enervating and needs to be toned with, say, a custard cream. If you prefer less color, pick an emphasis shade.'

Work with the scale of the room and play with the design until the balance is right – you don’t want too many tricks in the room. Curate colors and patterns before you start so you can prioritize for maximum impact.

Stacy Becker, the president and design director for White Label Interiors, encourages us to take this color's power one step further by painting our home's entire exterior.

'One of the main benefits we discuss with our clients regarding white-painted homes is the emphasis on the landscape and beauty of the natural surroundings,' she says.

'We liken the approach to a gallery – where the walls are all white to highlight the art. When a client has a lovely garden or canopy of trees surrounding the home and property, a white house really does let Mother Nature sing her best song. In addition – the house itself has a strong profile to accentuate the architectural lines and looks perpetually classic.'

And Becker isn't alone in her encouragement of using this color in ways beyond our door. While it's the perfect starting point, Goodenough adds that a white painted exterior can make our property appear 'both brighter and larger' – something that's particularly significant if it's north-facing and is situated in a shady spot.

'On the other hand, if the property was in a particularly sunny position, white exterior walls can reflect up to 35 percent more heat, keeping it cooler and more comfortable to live in.'

When considering the color palette for areas around our home, the staircase may be one of the last we think about, but Diane Keaton has made a case for choosing our hues even more carefully. Though this space is seen as transitional, the actress has chosen to not only sit on her staircase – but show it off to the world – and with that decision comes a glimpse of her monochromatic color palette.

'Using black and white is a bold way to make an immediate impact on those who enter the home,' comments  Karen Miller, the owner of Chicago-based Miller Design Group. 'They are the epitome of classic style, yet these colors can also depict modernism when paired appropriately.' According to Miller, a monochromic color scheme takes its power from the timeless style of contrasting hues that are versatile enough to work in every kind of home. 

'The black color conveys power and sophistication, whereas the white maintains a sense of freshness and cleanliness. This concept applies to any style of home, whether it be minimalistic, traditional, or eclectic, and continues to be a popular choice due to its versatility.'

The timelessness and versatility of this color combination make it an ever-popular choice, but as Miller explains, we can also owe its sucsess to its ease of application. Painting our walls, stairs, or stair rail can be completed in a day, but the finish is transformative. 

'One product I often recommend is the 'Fusion Mineral Paint' in shades of black and white. I have found their paint to be of high quality, with excellent coverage and durability,' Miller says.

'Going beyond just painting walls, you can also use it [in the wider entryway] for painting doors, trims, and furniture. For example, a black console table against a white wall or a white frame mirror hung on a black wall is visually appealing.'

Designing an accent wall in any room often involves experimenting with something exciting – and, in the best cases, unexpected. Diane Keaton, however, has taken her wall one step further by giving this surprising kitchen essential an upgrade. 

The Annie Hall actress is seen in front of her unconventional accent wall, made from a collection of oversized chopping boards hanging from a rack in her space. And it's made us rethink how we use this 'kitchen essential' entirely. 

In all their practicality, it can be easy to overlook a chopping board's potential, but as Diane reminds us, this piece (or pieces, in this case) can serve as a home decor accessory and contribute to something as powerful as an accent wall.

While chopping boards are often envisioned atop our kitchen countertops or hanging from our backsplash, Diane's statement collection invites us to revisit how we store our own pieces. And we're not alone in our admiration for what we predict might be an emerging design trend. 

'I love using chopping boards of all shapes and sizes in my own home and in client's homes to bring warmth and character to a kitchen,' says Lorrie Williams, the president of Fluff Interior Design. The Nebraska-based designer adds that while turning our chopping boards into decor has its aesthetic benefits, it's an impactful way to save on kitchen storage, too.

'Storage space is always at a premium in a kitchen, so anytime you can display practical items that you use daily that are also beautiful, it's a win-win,' Lorrie explains. 'I also frequently hang cutting boards, pizza boards, and chopping boards under a kitchen hood where they are available for easy access when prepping for dinner and where they become the focal point of the kitchen when on display.

Space-saving tactics aside, however, Lorrie explains how a chopping board's design qualities have long been overlooked. But displays like Diane's remind us just how visually interesting these pieces can be. 

We love how the actress has combined her wooden pieces to make a statement against her white-painted wall and industrial-style rack – but these wooden hues work just as beautifully on our kitchen walls.

It's inevitable that 'trends' are met with varying opinions from experts (whether in terms of interior design or gardens), but it is hard to find a bad word about rewilding. 

Though often labeled as a 'garden trend,' rewilding is more of a movement, or even an ecological restoration, designed to rehabilitate natural processes. It's possible for us all to contribute to rewilding, no matter the size of our space, and one of the most impactful ways to do so is to let our grass grow. This is where Diane Keaton's backyard comes into play. 

The Annie Hall actress shared footage from her Los Angeles yard, featuring her dog, Reggie, 'soaking up the last days of summer' by her pool. And, while we were inevitably distracted by her dog and landscaped pool area, we couldn't help but notice Diane's grass growing beautifully wild in the backdrop.

In allowing her grass to grow freely, Diane is partaking in the rewilding garden trend – creating an almost mini jungle for any wildlife that may find itself in her home. It's one of the best things we can do for our environment, and its benefits haven't gone unnoticed by Catherine Capon, a rewilding advocate from Treedom.

'To truly rewild your garden, you need to reduce your lawn area. Start by making a change to your mowing routine and do this less frequently,' Catherine says. 'You should allow for a mix of tidy short and wild long grass to grow.'

As the expert explains, many pruned lawns are a monoculture and offer little habitat value for wildlife; however, longer grass will likely invite an abundance of new creatures, including frogs, newts, hedgehogs, and lizards, in some cases.

So, what more can we do to make our yard more wildlife-friendly? 'Replacing sections of your lawn with native wildflowers or other types of vegetation to create more habitat for wildlife is also essential for rewilding,' Catherine says. She also recommends we plant musk mallow, kidney vetch, tufted vetch, or clover – the latter of which is especially loved by bees. 

'Reducing your lawn size has multiple maintenance benefits, too, as it does not need to be mowed or watered as much - it's a win-win.'

As cool as it is traditional, the modern farmhouse aesthetic might claim to be the perfect blend – and its appeal is understandable. Among those enjoying its style is Diane Keaton, the Annie Hall actress, who shared snapshots from her Spanish Colonial Revival, located in Beverly Hills.

'I like Sherwin Williams' Pure White in a washable and wipeable matte finish because it blends well, and the color creates a bright light and airy feel as the base. The softer appearance of matte paint lends itself well to accenting the natural wood tones of the modern farmhouse aesthetic.'

And, paint ideas aside, Bridget says we should also look to incorporate more earthy tones through fresh white and taupe upholstery and drapery, which is 'key' to the look.

Alongside the upholstered soft furnishings, Bridget explains we should follow Diane's lead by injecting hard wooden furnishings and accents around our space.

'Natural brown wood tones in furniture pieces such as coffee tables and dining tables, ceiling beams, as well as accented wood on chairs are so important in this interior style,' she says. 

'Black is also used as a strong accent color that is a bold layer to tie everything together, and it's important to add all these elements to create a cohesive look and feel.'

When it comes to accessorizing, Diane has added large plaid cushions (that complement her sofa), a monochromatic color scheme in the form of the plant pot, and (if we look closely) a photo frame that adds a hint of personality to the room. 

'The accessory layer is where you can have fun with items that have a bit of wear on them and appear like they have been in the space for a while, helping to create a casual, relaxed, cozy feel to the space,' Bridget explains. 

'Finally, finish off with tartan print [like Diane's], pillows, and blankets placed on your sofa and accent chairs. I also love the look of oversized wicker baskets that will complete the look beautifully. Together, all these elements will create a cozy, modern farmhouse space anyone will feel at home.'
