1. Not cleaning before applying

In order for Gorilla Glue to bind two surfaces together, it needs direct contact with said surfaces – meaning some cleaning tips are in order before you start repairing.

As Jim Marino, home improvement expert and CEO of Pinnacle Home Improvements, says, it's something you should 'never do' as it 'can clog up the internal mechanisms, making the problem worse.'

2. Bicycle chains

Another common place that Jim urges you to stop using WD-40 is on bike chains.

'It attracts dust, and again, it will cause you more problems,' he advises. 'A dry chain lubricant will do a better job without incident.'

It might damage it to be painted, or even if it initially looks great, it can flake easily and look tired or cheap, putting your effort, time, and resources to waste.

1. Kitchen cabinets

If you're debating painting the kitchen cabinets, it's good to know that whilst wood cabinets will be OK if prepped properly, if your cabinets are vinyl-coated, then it's a big no-no.

Kelly Mardis, owner of Marcel Painting, explains, 'I know so many people who insist on painting or having professional paint vinyl cabinets and drawers, and I can not stress enough that this is a terrible idea. Paint will not stay on vinyl cabinets, as there is nothing for the paint to grab onto.

'Every time you bump into it, the paint on your cabinets will chip, and it will look terrible very quickly. Don't paint vinyl cabinets. If someone asks me to do a job like that, I tell them no because I know I know the job won't meet the standard of quality I set.'

On the flip side, if you happen to buy a house that does have vinyl painted kitchen cabinets, you can scrape it off.

'Get a plastic scraper [such as Amazon's EHDIS 1.5" plastic scraper] and scrape the paint off. The bright side to all this is that since the paint does not stick well, it is not hard to get off. If some paint won't scrape off, just put some rubbing alcohol on the spot and rub it out with a rag,' advises Kelly.

If you end up having to purchase some for the first time, it won't go to waste, as there are many things you can safely clean with rubbing alcohol around the house.

2. Countertops

If your counters are a little tired and you're eyeing up counter ideas on Pinterest without the budget or time for a remodel, painting your counters may seem like a great fix. But our experts reckon you should step back and think again.

'One home upgrade I've never seen done well is a kitchen with repainted countertops,' says Jonathan Pallet, CEO at Clever Tiny Homes.

'While it is possible to get this look right, especially if you use an epoxy-based paint or clear coat over the top, you're going to immediately notice any imperfections in the surface. Heavy use is potentially going to wear away the finish over time, even if you use durable paint. If you want to redo your countertops, replacing them is almost always a better move.'

If you do want to have a go then Walmart's white epoxy undercoat would be a good start, it's good for using on MDF, plywood and other porous materials including countertops. A great alternative to painting is to use an adhesive peel and stick vinyl paper.

Head of Solved, Punteha van Terheyden has painted her kitchen counters before. She says, 'It looks so great initially but it quickly began flaking despite all the proper prep and application we took so much care over. I ended up sanding them down and wrapping them instead. That has lasted for two years so far, whereas the paint began chipping within 12 weeks.'

She recommends avoiding cheap materials if you are going to do either, and go for premium kits highly rated by shoppers.

3. The bath tub

Another temptation, especially when you see fabulous free-standing bathtub ideas – some of which might be painted – is to grab the brush and some paint and get to work.

In practice, it can be done, but it's not easy and with the bathroom being a high-humidity area, the results are unlikely to last.

Instead, you can buy tubs that are professionally painted and this is one instance where we'd recommend that service. You'll get a much more even finish and it will last.

If your tub is currently white and looks a little worse for wear, then you can touch up the chips with Amazon's Styleonme tub and tile touch up paint. It works on porcelain, fibreglass, enamel, acrylic and cast iron so if you have some chips or scratches it will do the trick.

4. Hardware

Hardware like handles, hooks, and drawer pulls, unless they are made from wood, are pretty much impossible to paint as the durable surfaces won't let paint stick for long, if at all.

If you do have wood ones, go for a good quality paint like Farrow & Ball's wood primer and undercoat.

However if you want to add a new look by upgrading your existing choices then it's better to buy new, or grab unique sets of door pulls from Etsy.

5. Shower tiles

According to Luke Siegal, CEO and founder of Raydoor, shower tiles is banned from his list of things to paint.

'Whenever a customer or family member asks for feedback on what what not to paint, I always advise against painting shower tiles. I feel it goes without saying, but constant moisture and steam will lead to peeling, bubbling, and mildew.'

Carr Lanphier, CEO of Improovy agrees, 'These are types of projects I do tend to discourage. It is possible to paint tiles in a way that looks good, even in a moisture-heavy environment like a shower. But, this is going to require sanding down any existing glaze or finish on the tile first, followed by an excellent tile-specific, waterproof primer and paint. Even so, I don’t tend to see painted shower tiles holding up very well in the long run.'

Our best recommendation, as advised by Carr is to use a really good tile-specific product such as the INSL-X SZA11009A-01 Stix acrylic waterborne bonding primer in white has the best ratings on Amazon. It has unparalleled adhesion to surfaces like glossy tiles, PVC, vinyl and glass, and provides a great base for a topcoat finish.

A better long-term bet will be to re-tile your wall. Punteha van Terheyden, Head of Solved, has tackled bathroom tiling before herself. She says, 'My cheat is to use a waterproof mosaic sheet tile, available from Amazon, and follow all the instructions. I tiled my bathroom upstands, and they have lasted five years, and look as good as the first day I installed them. The caulking was by far the hardest bit to get right, but having the right tools, such as a caulk smoothing kit and caulking gun, both from Lowe's, will help. Don't be afraid to give it a go.'

6. Hardwood floors

Whilst painted floor ideas can look amazing, be successfully executed with a lot of prep work, whether you should paint hardwood floors is another matter.

'Paint can disappoint on wood flooring,' explains Luke. 'It wears quickly and unevenly in high traffic zones, which will lead to chipping. Many times our customers will re-paint specific surfaces to match their new sliding door or walls, and whenever a customer suggests painting their floor, I highly advise against it.'

Instead of painting high sheen hardwood, give it a regular floor polish instead. Target's Orange Gloves 4-in-1 monthly hardwood floor polish with an orange scent is highly rated, and it protects against water damage, which is great for high-traffic areas.

These are later fired in a kiln or specialist oven at high temperatures by the store. That protective process sets and cures the paint, leaving it with a glossy and resistant surface.

Unfortunately, this is not a process you can easily replicate at home with dishware that you already own and regular paint, especially if you would like to continue to use it daily or put it in the dishwasher.

Instead, try an at-home plate painting ceramic kit from Amazon, which you bake in your oven. Afterwards, it will be dishwasher, microwave and food-safe.

Opting for a strip designed for a bigger weight is always a safe option if you are unsure.
• Ensure the tab is pointing down: I cannot stress this step enough, as it is the reason I had to fix cracks in plaster walls in my second year. The small tab on a Command hook is how you remove it, and it needs to be pointing downwards, not sideways, to ensure damage-free removal later down the line.
• Allow the strip to stick before hanging anything: In a rush to decorate or organize a space, I have been guilty of sticking the strip on the wall and hanging the item up right away. However, this can cause the strip to peel away. Instead, let the strip sit on the wall for 24 hours before hanging anything with it to allow it to properly adhere.
• Remove slowly with two hands: The ‘damage-free’ part of command strips comes down to the removal technique. To remove a strip from a wall without damage, place one finger at the top of the strip, applying firm pressure, as you pinch and pull the bottom tab downwards, not away from the wall. This stretches the sticky backing for safe removal. Only once it is fully stretched out, remove your top finger for the strip to come away completely.

1. Set up the cooling base

To make your DIY air conditioner and cool down a home in a heatwave, start with a large plastic container, bucket, or box. With your box cutter, cut one to three two-inch holes in the sides towards the top of the container, spacing them at least four inches apart, facing in the same direction. This will be where the cool air escapes to cool you down.

If you are using PVC piping, slot this into the small holes to help direct the cooling air. For extra precision, use silicone caulk, such as GE Window and Door Sealant from The Home Depot, to secure them in place and prevent air leaks.

For the lid, Lane says, ‘Cut a hole in the lid just big enough for the fan to sit snugly on top, blowing air down into the container.’ It can be helpful to use a permanent marker, such as a Sharpie from Walmart, to draw around the circular face of your fan to ensure it is not too big and the fan does not fall through into the container. You want it resting snugly on top so that it is facing down into the container.

To actually cool down a room with a swamp cooler, you need to fill the base of the container with very cold water, ice packs, or frozen water bottles. ‘The colder, the better,’ Lane says.

Michael Zohouri, HVAC expert and founder of Pyramid ECO, adds, ‘If you can elevate the container slightly, it helps direct the cool air into the middle of the room instead of just along the floor. You’re essentially creating a small evaporative cooler, using chilled water to cool the air as it moves through.’

When the water warms up or the ice packs melt, swap in fresh ice or refill with cold water. Luckily, it is a relatively simple task for homeowners to complete themselves with the right tools and some patience.

Here's how to complete this DIY project to elevate your home without expert intervention – and while keeping all of your fingers in the process.

Installing vinyl plank flooring like a pro

How long it takes to install vinyl plank flooring generally depends on your skill level, and the size and shape of your room. On average, however, for a DIY-er, you can expect the project to take anywhere between two to four hours.

The same applies to how hard it is to install vinyl plank flooring yourself. This is generally considered an intermediate home DIY task as it requires precision measurements and cutting, as well as a lot of patience.

Choosing vinyl plank flooring

Before planning your project, you need to work out if luxury vinyl flooring is right for your home, and, if so, what type of vinyl plank flooring to use.

There are two faux wood flooring ideas to choose from:

• Floating: Floating vinyl plank flooring is made up of interlocking planks that do not attach to the subfloor. Most vinyl planks are floating and are easier and quicker to install.
• Adhesive: As the name suggests, adhesive vinyl plank flooring sticks down to the subfloor with either adhesive tape or liquid glue. This is often more affordable than floating vinyl plank flooring, but is more time-consuming to install.

Before you begin

Before you start installing vinyl plank flooring, you need to thoroughly prepare the space, lest your DIY home improvements devalue your property.

Vinyl plank flooring can be installed directly over the top of existing hard flooring such as wood or tiles, but you should clean the floors without streaks first. If you have carpet flooring ideas, however, this should be removed.

Luckily, vinyl plank flooring does not usually need underlayment, especially if the flooring below it is already level and smooth. That being said, installing underlayment for vinyl plank flooring can be helpful to level out uneven surfaces, reduce sound transfer between floors, and offer another level of comfort and insulation ot your flooring.

How to install vinyl plank flooring

1. Plan the flooring layout

Before committing to your affordable DIY project, start by laying out the planks in your empty room. This will give you a better idea of which direction you want your planks to be, and allows you to stagger the planks so that all of the short edges do not line up in long lines.

Start along your longest straight wall and work outwards.

Anton Liakhov, interior designer and founder of Roomtery, then suggests, 'Let the vinyl planks acclimate in the room for at least 48 hours so they can reach their ultimate temperature and humidity level.' This can prevent warping and flexing during and after the installation.

2. Remove old trim and molding

Bar Zakheim, CEO of Better Place Design & Build, says, 'It's much easier to install vinyl plank without baseboards or other trim at floor level,' so use your flat prybar to ease the old molding and trims away from the wall.

You might find the hammer useful to help tap the bar behind the edge of each trim. Thomas Borcherding, owner of Homestar Design Remodel, adds, 'I advise homeowners to be careful when removing their baseboards. You will have to use a crowbar resting against your home's plaster or drywall in order to pry loose the nails that secure your baseboards.

'To prevent wall damage, it's best to use a piece of sturdy cardboard secured against the wall as you tilt the crowbar into the wall.'

Don't worry, we have some tips for removing scuffmarks from walls if you need them. Remove any lingering nails from the wall using your pliers.

3. Prepare the floor

This is the most important step.

If you are installing vinyl plank flooring over the top of existing hard, level flooring, now is the time to deploy smart cleaning tips to remove any dust and debris. Ensure the floor is dry before continuing.

If you are removing carpet, removing floor tiles, pulling up wooden floors, or removing linoleum flooring, use protective nitrile-dipped construction gloves from Lowe's, to protect against cuts.

Then, Thomas says, 'You may wish to use a floor leveling product to ensure a consistent floor elevation. Such products are simple to use. You merely pour the leveling solution onto your subfloor and wait for it to dry.

'Gravity will ensure it is spread out evenly and that your floor will be a consistent grade. Make sure to caulk seams in your subfloor so that the leveling product doesn't drip into lower levels.'

The MAPEI Self Leveler Plus, from Lowe's, is designed for indoor use and is ready for vinyl plank flooring installation after three days.

Anton further explains, 'If your subfloor is not level, level it by using a leveling compound. Vinyl planks are flexible and will conform to imperfections, leading to uneven wear and an amateurish look. '

4. Test fit the first row

To start installing vinyl plank flooring, Anton says, 'Always start at the longest, most exposed wall. This is generally opposite the main door. If the room isn't a perfect square (which rarely exists), starting here will cause any slight non-levelness to be hidden along the back or under baseboards.

'Stagger the seams at least six inches apart to resemble real wood floors and increase strength.' To make this easier, start with a full plank in the center of the wall and work to either side, so that cut planks at the end will be of roughly equal length.

Place 1/4 inch spacers, available at Walmart in packs of 250, between your planks and the wall. Anton warns, 'Never skip the expansion gap. Vinyl does expand and contract slightly with temperature changes, and without a buffer zone, it could buckle or lift.'

5. Cut planks to size

Much like cutting laminate flooring, measure twice before committing to any cuts to avoid waste.

Once you have measured the length of the plank you need, use your carpenter's square to ensure a straight line at the cut point on the face of the planks (the side you will see after installation) and cut along the line with either your utility knife or fine-tooth saw. You will need to go over this line several times.

Then, turn the board over so that the finished side is facing downwards and fold the plank back on itself. The cut should snap by itself. If it does not, repeat the process again.

6. Attach the planks

How you attach your planks will depend on the type of vinyl plank flooring you chose:

• For floating vinyl plank flooring: Place the next plank at a slight angle to the first plank, lining up the tongue-and-groove sections on each piece. Slide the tongue and grooves together and fold the plank down so that it lies flush to the floor.
• For adhesive vinyl plank flooring: Ensure the adhesive is sticky before pressing the plank down.
• For both: Tap the plank gently with a rubber mallet to ensure it is firmly in place.

7. Fitting around protrusions

Protrusions from walls, such as around alcoves, need to be cut in the same way as trimming planks to fit.

Again, measure twice and use the carpenter's square to ensure straight lines and even cuts. This time, instead of one cut, however, you will be making two, usually at a right angle.

8. Fitting the final planks

To fit the final plank, you may need the assistance of your pull bar, and you may need to cut planks lengthwise to fit them into smaller width gaps. Remember to once again include the 1/4 inch gap.

9. Refit moldings

With the flooring snugly in place, you can install baseboards and moldings again. You can do this manually, using a hammer and nails, or with a Straight Brad Nailer from Lowe's.

Even if you have put gravel at the bottom of your planter for drainage, it is beneficial to have a drainage hole to allow excess water to flow out and reduce the risk of issues like root rot and fungal disease.

How to add drainage holes to planters

So, as Danny highlights, wireless and rechargeable lights might not be anything new, but they are an ingenious way to help illuminate small, dark spaces without the need for a permanent fixture.

For example, many choose to learn how to light a closet without wiring. While another kitchen lighting trend is to add some LED strips under kitchen cabinets for some gentle down lighting.

Either way, paying just under $10 for these two lights from Amazon means I can effortlessly see (and find) items I'm looking for, without the fuss of having to use my phone every time I want to grab an item.

Pros and cons

In my personal opinion and after six months of daily use, I strongly believe that these lights come with many positives. This includes:

• Easy to use: After charging them for a few hours with the cord they came with, these strip lights were ready to go. Having decided where I wanted to put them, they were ready to be used.
• They last (and last): In my instance, despite having had these lights for six months and on 100% brightness, I have only had to charge them once, which was when I first bought them. But of course, the battery life will all depend on how often you use your lights.
• No wiring needed: 'You can add glow to base cabinets without running any wire,' Danny explains. 'All this without asking for permits or adding junction boxes. For low-voltage layering, they are a very good home addition!'
• Dimmable: In my dark under-the-stairs closet, I needed as much light as possible. But thanks to their dimmer button, which you can press and hold to dim the LEDs from 100% to 10%, these aren't the only places to stick them. For example, some may wish to have them in the bathroom or hallway when they make a trip to the WC at night. Others may prefer to have these strips under the kitchen countertop as mood lighting. While the rest may wish to use them as a night light when designing kid's bedrooms.
• Versatile: 'Design-wise, they open up unexpected possibilities,' says Danny. 'You can float a backlit headboard. Line a bookshelf with warm LEDs that dim when you close the doors.'
• Eco-friendly: Wondering how to cut energy bills? Along with turning off lights when you leave a room, you could always try investing in rechargeable lights, like these five-star rated 360 Lighting Lynn Modern Industrial Buffet Table Lamps 26" from Target, which come in a pack of two.
• Stylish: 'Rechargeable lamps offer an incredible amount of freedom, not only in the layout, but how the space feels and functions,' says Sarah Speck from Hudson Valley Lighting Group Designers. 'They solve a practical problem. For homeowners, they create these small moments of joy. Whether it's the simplicity of picking up a lamp and moving it around the house, or just how clean and elegant a cordless lamp can look, they elevate everyday life.'

I've only found two cons in my many months of using these rechargeable lights under stairs.

• They take hours to charge: Unlike changing a bulb, which will give you an instant fix, wireless battery-operated lights can take hours to charge. 'Most rechargeable fixtures top out around 4 to 8 hours of full brightness per charge,' Danny confirms.
• They won't be right for every home: 'If you want 24/7 light, rechargeable lights are a weak solution,' Danny says. 'You have to know when it is a feature, and when it is a compromise.'

Where it's good for

Rechargeable lights have their place and purpose in many homes.

'From a practical point of view, rechargeable lights are especially convenient in rented housing, where there is no way to install wiring or fixed lights,' says Jason Altshuler, owner of My Electric Home.

Therefore, using rechargeable lights serves as a brilliant home decor idea for those who are in rentals, but still want to put their stamp on things and help their rooms still ooze with atmosphere.

These types of lights could also be good for those who are on a budget, like me. This $10 fixed my lack-of-lighting issue in a vital storage space without costing me the earth.

Due to their rechargeable nature, this lighting solution is also perfect for those who are trying to be more sustainable at home.

Explaining why, Jason says, 'Rechargeable lights are generally popular in homes where flexibility, mobility, and energy efficiency are important. Unlike traditional lights, such devices do not require a permanent connection to the power grid. This means that they can be freely placed where there is no outlet (on open shelves, in the corners of rooms, or even in closets).'

Lastly, if space is tight and you haven't got square footage to play around with, rechargeable lights are available in all different shapes, styles, and sizes, so they could help you illuminate tight spots without taking up much room.

Verdict

All in all, I'm chuffed with these lights. Not only they solve my dark closet situation within hours, but have lasted six months without having to be charged.

That said, there are three things to keep in mind if you are considering purchasing these lights. This includes giving some thought to the position you place them, as the sensor needs to be triggered (otherwise, they won't turn on).

Secondly, you'll need to keep in mind how bright you want your space to be. If it's 'very', battery-powered lights might not be the best fit. And lastly, consider how often these lights will be used, because this will determine how often you will need to charge them.

Either way, I think these LEDs are brilliant value for money and I can't see myself thinking otherwise anytime soon!

Breathing clean air while spending time at home is essential, but which is better in the toss-up between air scrubber vs. air purifier?

While both improve indoor air quality, they do so in very different ways – and in very different situations. Whether you’re trying to breathe easier during allergy season or recover from a renovation or flood, it's important to choose the right home upgrade.

We spoke to industry experts who regularly work with air scrubbers and the best air purifiers to shed light on the key differences and help you decide what's best for your home.

Air scrubber vs. air purifier: a comparison

What's the difference?

Despite their similar-sounding names, air scrubbers and air purifiers improve your indoor air quality in different ways.

‘Air purifiers are built to improve indoor air quality over time,’ says Alex Panasyuk, COO at Provision Property Restoration. ‘The good ones use HEPA filters to capture fine particles from dust, pollen, pets, and sometimes VOCs. They’re ideal for ongoing use in bedrooms and living areas.’

Air scrubbers, on the other hand, are far more active in how they work. ‘They release charged ions or oxidizers into the air,’ explains Omero Flores, CEO of American AC & Heating.

‘These molecules neutralize contaminants not just in the air, but on surfaces too – like countertops and door handles,’ he adds. This level of cleaning can avoid many of the common mistakes compromising air quality, and can be a more guaranteed way to have consistently clean air.

Michael Zohouri, founder of Pyramid Eco, sums it up neatly, explaining, ‘In simple terms, purifiers trap, and scrubbers treat.’

‘So the main difference is in the way they work and the purposes of use,’ adds Jimmy Hiller, CEO of Happy Hiller. ‘Air scrubbers are used to get rid of odors, tackle VOCs and germs, while purifiers filter the air that passes through them.’

Investing in an affordable gadget to test your air quality will help determine whether you need a small air purifier or a serious air scrubber.

The benefits of air scrubbers

Air scrubbers are the go-to solution for more serious air quality issues – think smoke damage, post-renovation debris, and getting rid of black mold.

‘You want an air scrubber when your air quality is compromised big time,’ says Alex. ‘If you’ve had a flood, found mold, or dealt with fire damage, scrubbers are built for that job. We use commercial-grade models during restoration projects because they clean air fast and thoroughly.’

Omero notes that they’re particularly useful in homes with immune-compromised residents or persistent odors, adding, ‘Scrubbers actively kill or neutralize bacteria, viruses, mold, and VOCs. They work continuously and require very little maintenance once installed.’

Maintenance will be as simple as giving it a clean at the same time as you clean your HVAC system. And because of this integration, they also offer whole-home coverage.

Jimmy adds that while some models are loud and pricey, they can be surprisingly efficient. ‘Run every day, they can improve indoor air significantly – especially in homes with pets, allergies, or high humidity. Just remember, they only work when the HVAC system is running.’

Knowing when you should turn on your AC might then be influenced by when you need air purification, and having that functionality ready can make all the difference in areas with lower air quality.

Michael agrees that scrubbers are ideal in more demanding environments. ‘If you’re renovating a room or cleaning up after water damage, you’re going to need an air scrubber. They’re built to actively break down harmful particles released in those scenarios.’

The benefits of air purifiers

Air purifiers are typically quieter than air scrubbers, more portable, and designed for everyday use, making them the best option for most households.

‘For most homes, a purifier is the easier option,’ says Michael. ‘They handle common issues like dust, pet dander, and seasonal allergies. Generally, they also run quieter and require less maintenance.’ Cleaning an air purifier is a pretty straightforward task, and an easy way to make sure yours can last for years.

Purifiers are especially beneficial for people with asthma or allergies, and as somebody who tests these appliances and has been using an air purifier in my bedroom, I can confirm that it's basically cured my allergies and asthma.

‘They’re highly effective at capturing airborne allergens and smoke,’ says Omero. ‘And because they’re portable and budget-friendly, they’re a smart solution for specific rooms like bedrooms or home offices.’

If you’re in a home without ductwork, Jimmy points out that scrubbers won’t even be an option: ‘A purifier is ideal in that case.’ Plus, as they're so small, they can be one of the best ways to improve air quality when living in a city.

Alex agrees that purifiers are a great long-term investment for general air quality maintenance: ‘If you’ve got pets, allergies, or bad odors, a HEPA-based purifier can make a big difference.’

Which should you buy?

The best choice depends entirely on your home’s needs. Air purifiers are ideal for everyday maintenance, especially in smaller, targeted spaces. They’re affordable, easy to use, and effective for common concerns like pollen and pet hair. It's an effective trick to prevent dust at home.

Air scrubbers, meanwhile, are better suited to homes with more significant air quality issues or for post-renovation and restoration work. ‘If you’re dealing with mold, strong odors, or want protection throughout the entire home, a scrubber is the better choice,’ says Jimmy.

‘But remember, they only run when your HVAC does – so if you don’t use heating or AC often, a plug-in purifier may be more effective day-to-day,’ he adds. This is why smaller air purifiers like the Coway Airmega Mighty at Amazon (which we tested and loved) are so handy, as you can carry them to different rooms when needed.

Ultimately, you may not need to choose. ‘Combining systems can offer the best of both worlds,’ Omero adds. ‘For example, install a whole-home scrubber through your HVAC, then use portable HEPA purifiers in bedrooms. You get powerful protection without overdoing it.’

Whichever route you take, don’t forget to clean your air purifier and air scrubber and remember to change filters. As Michael reminds us: ‘Even the best purifier or scrubber won’t do much if it hasn’t been maintained.’

Painting hacks to minimize clean-up

It helps to put things in place when preparing walls for painting to make the clean-up process after painting a room easier. Planning ahead can save you time and energy in the long run.

1. Layer up drop cloths

Drop cloths are one of the most essential tools for painting a house, helping to protect your floors from staining and reducing cleanup. Bar Zakheim, contractor and owner of Better Place Design & Build begins, ‘Drop cloths are cheap. There's no reason not to put them just about anywhere. I love to tape them over windows to protect the glass as well as the trim in one go.’

You can buy extra large drop cloths from Walmart for less than $30.

However, drop cloths can be awkward when painting baseboards as they get in the way and don't fully protect the flooring up close. To get around this, Brian Kemnitz, contractor and owner of Pearl Painters suggests, ‘Put brown paper down under your baseboards when you are putting in the new base. You can use playing cards to help ease the paper under the trim and avoid pinching the paper. No tape, no bleed – perfect!’

2. Use quality tools

When shopping for DIY tools, you should always go for the most premium option you can afford Brian continues. He says, ‘Use a lambswool roller [availible at The Home Depot] – it is worth spending the extra. These higher quality tools mean there is less splatter on you and everything else, plus they hold more paint meaning fewer re-loads.

‘When tacking ceilings and painting with a roller, roll side to side, not overhead to keep paint off your face.’

3. Work in large, continuous sections

It is beneficial to try and complete as much as you can in one session (without rushing). This not only ensures you finish your home DIY projects but minimizes clean-up, too.

Bar points out, ‘Every time you stop, you need to clean up – so plan your work accordingly. Try to get whole sections done in a single day, whether that's a whole wall, a whole room, all of the trim, etc. This will mean less time on cleanup.’

If you do have to split up the work, don’t fret. Brian adds, ‘You can wrap your brushes and rollers in plastic while you have a break, so there is no need to clean while you pause painting. Then, you can bag your paint bucket, screen, and roller for storage for up to 10 days. Then, when you are ready to start again it's ready to go, no cleaning until you are done!’

4. Use disposable for small projects

When tackling smaller jobs in a larger project, or finishing some quick weekend DIY home projects, it sometimes pays to use disposable tools. Jonathan Palley, CEO of Clever Tiny Homes suggests, ‘Use disposable brushes for small projects. Washing out, drying, and storing your paintbrushes takes a lot of time and effort. Sometimes, a simple sponge brush you can just throw away when you're done is a better option.’

5. Work one color at a time

When you have picked the right paint for a job, work one color and finish at a time to minimize mess. This reduces how many rollers and trays you have out at a time, making your painting area easier to navigate, less overwhelming, and easier to clean.

Alternatively, Jonathan suggests using a few colors full stop. ‘Every time you add another color to the mix, you've got one more can, one more tray, and at least one more brush to keep track of,’ he explains. ‘If you want to use multiple colors on a single job, handle one at a time.’

6. Use Liquid Mask

To avoid having to get paint off glass when working around windows, Brian recommends using a liquid mask, such as Jasco Mask and Peel, available at The Home Depot. This handy, paint-on product forms a tight seal over the glass once dry, allowing you to paint somewhat haphazardly and simply peel off the mess afterward. No more scrubbing and scraping and praying you don’t damage the surface beneath.

7. Soak brushes in vinegar

Make cleaning paintbrushes easier and less toxic by cleaning with vinegar. When working with water-based interior paints, Andrew Cohn, DIY expert and founder of COHn Acrylics explains, ‘Soaking your brushes in plain white vinegar [available at Target] is the easiest way to clean the brushes after using them and will help keep them lasting longer for future paints.’

1. Install a DIY stair runner

It might feel beyond your capabilities, but trust us, DIY expert Claire Douglas of Claire Douglas Styling and @clairedouglasstyling on Instagram, assures that a DIY stair runner, to bring your dream staircase ideas to life, can be completed in a single weekend.

'A DIY stair runner is an affordable DIY for a weekend,' she says. 'The exact amount of time it will take will depend on the condition of your stairs, but a day of prep and a day of fitting is a good guide.'

To begin with, you'll need to remove any existing carpet or runner, with a tool such as the Goldblatt Trim Puller available at Amazon, before sanding down the edges of the stairs and removing any carpet gripper rods or old staples with a Carpet Staple Puller, available at Amazon.

'Make any minor repairs using a wood filler, and paint the areas of wood that will be exposed,' continues Claire. 'Once dry, apply a second coat.'

Then it’s time to fit your runner. 'These can be bought affordably from many places, or you can use multiple runner rugs and join them under the lip of the steps,' says Claire.

First mark out exactly where you want the runner to sit, and apply strong double sided carpet tape, available at Amazon, along the edges. 'Peel off the tape cover just before you start attaching the runner, and be sure to keep it very tight to the stairs,' she continues. 'Once the runner is in place in each step and you're happy, secure with carpet tacks or staples. Continue this process for the whole stairs.'

2. Replace existing door handles and hinges

It might seem particularly small and simple, but Ryan Meagher from BVM Contracting recommends refreshing your space by replacing your existing door handles and hinges, which is also one of HGTV's Jenn Todryk's easy updates to upgrade any room.

Ryan says, 'Replacing interior door handles with a more updated finish is a very easy task that can be completed, as long as you have access to a screwdriver or drill.'

To install kitchen cabinet handles, or indeed any others, start by removing the existing door handle by unscrewing the screws that hold the handle in place, with a screwdriver such as the CRAFTSMAN Ratcheting Screwdriver available at Amazon. Then, you're ready to switch them out.

'Note that different doors will require different door handles,' highlights Ryan. 'For example, you will want to purchase a privacy lock for a bathroom door, a keyed lock for your bedroom door, and a regular passage door handle for closets or other types of doors that do not need to be locked for any reason.'

You may also want to install new hinges to match the new style of door handle, which also come in different sizes and varieties, with either rounded or 90 degree corners.

'The best plan is to bring one of your existing hinges to a local hardware store to get an exact match, so you don't purchase the wrong type.' advises Ryan. 'You can get both door handles and hinges in bulk from Amazon to make this an affordable project to do yourself, just make sure you plan out the types of door handles and hinges you need!'

3. Paint your fireplace

Using paint is a great way to update a fireplace to overhaul your fireplace ideas, costing as little as $50 and making a huge difference to your space.

Mark Lumpkin, renovation and design expert at STR Cribs, advises, 'First, clean the fireplace surface, to remove soot and residue,' before applying a high-resistant primer and two coats of high-temperature paint, such as the Rutland Products Black Rutland 1200-Degree F Brush-On Flat Stove Paint available at Amazon, allowing ample dry time between application.

'In total, this project generally takes six to eight hours total for prep, paint and cure,' adds Mark, meaning you can actually get this done in just one day. You can also use the same paint to paint IKEA furniture, for a cohesive yet customized look.

4. Install a tiling backsplash

You might not know it, but it's actually relatively easy and affordable to install a backsplash, as renovation and design expert Mark highlights.

'To affordably and rapidly refresh your back wall, prep and smooth the surface of the wall, then apply peel-and-stick tiles in a design of your choice,' he says, such as these Smart Tiles available at Walmart.

'On the other hand, you could try a non-standard but unique option, such as using a vinyl backsplash printed with a tile pattern, which can replicate the appearance of classic tiling with less mess.

'The whole project usually takes 4–6 hours to finish, so it’s perfect for a weekend refresh,' he assures.

Head of Solved, Punteha van Terheyden, used sheet tiles and reduced much effort and time on her weekend DIY project, below. She says, 'Stick a mesh sheet of tiling onto your backsplash, then grout. It's that simple.'

5. Redecorate your front door

Finally, your front door is the first thing guests see when arriving at your home, so cleaning your front door and updating it is an effective way to make a good impression and keep up with all the latest front door trends.

Carr Lanphier, CEO at Improovy, shares, 'Painting projects tend to make great weekend jobs in my experience. You can even feasibly accomplish repainting an entire room in a weekend if you’re willing to put in the time! Painting a front door or a garage door can be a good weekend project as well.'

Renovation and design expert Mark notes that this will take approximately three to four hours from prep to completion, and recommends using the Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Paint, available in 22 colors at Amazon, for a durable finish. How to paint over stained wood

Steven Mena, CEO at AAA Fence and Deck Company begins, 'Most homeowners can handle this DIY project if they have the proper equipment and a bit of patience.

'It's just following steps. But the success of the job really depends on getting the hang of the details when it comes to working with stained surfaces.'

Before starting, you will need:

• A respirator mask, available at Walmart, to avoid breathing in dust and paint fumes.
• A drop cloth, available at Amazon, if you are working indoors to protect flooring.
• A strong cleaner, such as sugar soap from Amazon to remove grease and grime.
• Sandpaper, from The Home Depot, to prepare for priming.
• Wood filler, from Walmart, to repair damage.
• A paintbrush set, from The Home Depot, or a small roller set, also from The Home Depot, to prime and paint.

1. Clean the wood thoroughly

The first step in this DIY project that will elevate your home is cleaning wood furniture to remove dust and grime that could result in an uneven paint finish.

Steven continues, 'First, give the surface a good clean using a degreaser or a gentle soap solution to get rid of any dirt or grease.'

One of the best ways to ensure all grease, dirt, and dust are removed from the stained wood in question is to use a trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaner, available in liquid form at The Home Depot. This is a non-sudsing cleaner formulated specifically for heavy-duty cleaning before painting.

After applying, you will need to rinse it off and dry it off well to ensure the primer will stick.

2. Deal with any damage

Even if you are after a modern rustic style finish, whether you are dealing with stained wooden furniture or something like staircase balustrades, you should inspect it for dents, deep scratches and any other kinds of damage before getting to work.

When it comes to how to refinish wood furniture, significant dents and holes can be filled with wood filler while more superficial damage can often be sanded away.

It is worth cleaning the surface again after this stage to ensure any dust is removed.

3. Sand all surfaces

As with so many decorating jobs around the home, good preparation is key to the success of painting over stained wood, as is having the right DIY tools to hand.

Steven Mena says, 'One of the main issues with stained wood is that the stain and protective coatings, such as polyurethane, make the surface smooth, which can make it tough for paint to stick. To get this done right, the wood needs some good prep work.

'After you've got the surface all clean and dry, it's time to move on to sanding. Lightly sanding with 120-150 grit sandpaper roughs up that smooth finish, making it easier for the paint to stick.'

A good handheld sander, such as the Ryobi Random Orbit Sander, available at The Home Depot, can make this quicker and easier on your arm. Steven adds, 'If you can't sand, you can always try using a deglosser, which is sometimes called a liquid sander, as a good alternative. This chemical solution makes the surface soft enough for paint to adhere, which saves you some effort.'

4. Prime before painting

For a smart and long-lasting end result, you'll want to use a good-quality primer, suitable for the task at hand. In fact, this is one of our top interior painting tips.

Carr Lanphier, CEO of Improovy shares, 'In my experience the most important step is going to be a solid primer, which I’d consider necessary for this job if you want to ensure good adhesion with your paint over a glossier surface.'

Kelly Mardis, owner of Marcel Painting concurs, adding, 'Use a shellac primer because this will prevent the tannins in the wood from bleeding through and keep it from ruining the color of your paint. Let the primer sit for a few hours before applying your first coat.'

5. Use the right type of paint for the job

Once your primer is dry you can get painting – but do research your paint finishes carefully before parting with any money.

Steven continues, 'If you're thinking about painting, going for a high-quality paint that's made for wood surfaces will give you the best results. Satin or semi-gloss finishes are great choices if you're looking for something durable and polished, especially for furniture or cabinetry.'

According to the experts at Five Star Painting, you should use a latex primer and paint over a water-based wood stain or oil-based paint and primer over an oil-based wood stain.

6. Apply your final finish

Now for the bit you've been waiting for – the final paint finish. Take your time with this rather than just slathering on thick coats.

Steven recommends, 'When you’re painting, go for thin, even coats. Just make sure to let each layer dry completely before you add the next one.

'Usually, two coats do the trick for solid coverage, but if you're working with lighter colors over darker stains, you might want to consider adding a third coat.'

Paint brushes and rollers are both essential tools for painting a house and you can use either here, but if you are dealing with a carved or decorative piece, or skirting boards, a brush will make it easier to be accurate.

The good news is that you can wallpaper over textured walls, the not-great-news is that you will have to endure some extra prep work beforehand to make the walls as wallpaper-ready as possible.

Our decorating experts say the best place to start is evaluating your walls to see how textured they are – is it barely-there texture or more ingrained? The basic rule of thumb is to wallpaper on walls that are as smooth as possible, and the design you've chosen needs to be taken into consideration too.

We've asked our professional experts for their advice on how to wallpaper correctly and what to look out for with textured walls.

How to wallpaper on textured walls

The most important thing with wallpapering a textured wall is to prep extremely well, and that starts with examining the wall first.

Catherine Jacob, head of design at Hovia explains, 'The type of texture your wall has plays a big role in determining how well wallpaper will adhere and how it will look once applied and there are 4 main types – leftover wallpaper, orange peel (light dimpled surface), popcorn (rough and jagged) and knockdown (textures featuring peaks and troughs).

'Light or medium textures, such as orange peel or knockdown finishes, may work with minimal preparation. Heavily textured or rough surfaces, like heavy stucco, will need more extensive preparation,' advises James Mellan-Matulewicz, creative director and interior designer at Bobbi Beck.

Once you've evaluated the texture level you can start to gather what you'll need for the first stage.

1. Start by prepping the wall

It's vital wallpaper onto a perfectly smooth wall, but it's even more important with a textured wall that you prep it thoroughly first.

'Clean the surface well before doing anything else,' says Catherine. 'Dust, dirt, and grease can affect how well your wallpaper sticks. Thoroughly clean your wall with a mild detergent then allow it to dry completely before proceeding.'

You don't need anything fancy for this stage, a bowl of warm soapy water (we like Dawn Platinum power wash dish soap from Amazon) will suffice with a microfiber cloth.

2. Use the joint compound

Old properties can have uneven walls so these steps will help with them too.

'Textures can show through your wallpaper, creating lumps and bumps that are visible through your chosen design which is why we always recommend smoothing your walls beforehand,' says Catherine.

Jodi Peterman, CEO and owner at Elizabeth Erin Designs agrees, 'The first thing you’ve got to do is smooth out the walls. That means skim coating them with joint compound.'

Once your wall is dry from the cleaning, you can apply the joint compound using a putty knife and smoothing it over with the skimming tool. Let it dry completely once applied and if it needs a second coat wait until the next day. 3. Sand it over

Once the compound is bone dry and you're happy with the coverage. it's time to sand it over.

Catherine says, 'For moderately textured walls, lightly sanding the surface can reduce unevenness. This step is especially important for textures like orange peel.'

Use a fine grit sanding paper or block to gently smooth over any rough edges leftover from applying the compound. It will create a much better surface for the next stage. 4. Add a primer (and maybe lining paper)

Failing to use a primer can result in peeling and it can stop wallpaper adhering properly.

'Applying a primer designed for textured walls can improve adhesion and create a smoother base for your wallpaper. It also helps prevent the texture from showing through,' says Catherine.

If your walls are still not quite as smooth as you want even after this stage then you can also add a lining paper, this would be the case for a heavily textured wall for example. 'Using a wallpaper lining paper will help smooth out irregularities like cracks, bumps & uneven textures whilst creating an even base for wallpaper,' suggests James.

5. Choose your design carefully

This step is really important as it's not as simple as putting up any design that you love. Although there are many wonderful wallpaper ideas to chose from, in the case of a textured wall you're choosing to cover, you will need to pick the incoming wallpaper wisely.

'If you’re putting up wallpaper, skip peel-and-stick entirely. It’s not forgiving at all on less-than-perfect surfaces. Go with pre-pasted or paste-the-wall wallpaper, but only after you’ve done the prep work,' says Jodi.

Vanessa Carter, creative director and art advocate at PaintVibe.com says, 'Thicker wallpapers can hide the texture of a wall better than thinner ones. You can also use patterns or darker colors.'

James agrees, 'Select a thicker wallpaper such as vinyl or textured wallpaper, as it can better conceal imperfections in the wall. Avoid thin, delicate papers, as they will highlight the texture underneath.'

What to look out for when undertaking textured walls

As textured walls can throw up some issues, it pays to prepared and be aware of what they may be.

James explains, 'Wallpaper applied to heavily textured or dirty walls may not stick properly, leading to peeling or uneven results. So always ensure you follow the best preparation for the texture of your wall.'

What is worth doing is hanging a small wallpaper sample to the wall first to see how it sticks and looks on the texture. James also advises using a strong adhesive designed for challenging surfaces, so if your wall has been particularly tricky to smooth over it's worth investing in a product like Amazon's wallpaper adhesive 1.32 gallon tack wallpaper paste, it's known for its excellent adhesion.

Carr Lanphier, CEO of Improovy has a great tip regarding natural light in a space and how it can impact wallpapering a textured wall, 'I’ve seen people wallpaper over textured walls and end up unhappy with the result because rooms with tons of natural or direct light will show texture through the wallpaper a lot more! So, that’s something to keep in mind if you’re looking to paper over texture.'

Without doubt, you can wallpaper on textured walls – although there are some places you should never wallpaper, textured or not – you just need to do your research first to discover what type of texture you are dealing with. This will then inform the next stages and the key is to prep, prep, prep!

Few things are as frustrating as a waterlogged lawn. You can nail all your lawn care, but a sudden storm or claggy clay soil can turn even the best-kept lawn into a bog.

On top of that, fixing a waterlogged lawn can be incredibly expensive. If you've ever looked into a quote for fitting a drain you'll know that it can run into thousands of dollars.

This means that many of us look for DIY lawn drainage solutions. The good news is that there are several DIY projects that can banish standing water from your yard, however, some do require time and effort.

1. Aerate your lawns and save hundreds of dollars

Before you start digging trenches in your lawn, you have an easy and cheap solution: aeration. Aerating a lawn means poking holes in the soil or removing plugs of dirt. This is not only great for grass plants, as it means more air, water, and nutrients can reach your plant's roots, but it also means water can drain into the soil, reducing the risk of waterlogging in your lawn. In some cases, simple lawn aeration can solve drainage problems and save you hundreds or thousands of dollars in landscaping fees.

This is also a particularly cheap solution. You don't need anything fancy - you can use a push aerator like this at Target, a plug aerator like this at Amazon, or even aerating shoes like these at Walmart, and they all cost less than $100. You can also buy tow-behind aerators like this from Menards if you have a big plot, but these tend to start at around $200.

The drawback with aeration is that you can only do it at certain times of the year - in the fall for cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and late spring for warm-season grasses like Zoysia. Aeration isn't a silver bullet, either. It can certainly help, and in many cases, it can eliminate waterlogging, but it won't improve waterlogging in every case.

2. Make a French drain for hidden drainage

French drains are an incredibly popular drainage solution. These clever drains are hidden underneath lawns and are the most common solution for lawn drainage.

To be clear, professionals advise against building a French drain yourself, because there's some complicated maths to calculate surface runoff to consider when perfecting a French drain. That said, the actual installation process is fairly simple.

A French drain must be installed at the bottom of a slope, and it must be drained into wells or a sewage system at either end. It must be installed in an area without other pipes or tree roots.

To install the drain, dig a 9-inch wide channel at least 18 inches deep, however long you need. After creating the channel, lay down some gravel along the length, then lay down filter fabric. After that, put down your perforated pipe. The perforated pipe allows water to enter the drain at any point along the pipe. It also means the pipe can carry most of the water to your drain or well, but the perforation means some water will slowly filter into the ground, too. Once the pipe is laid, cover it with gravel.

This can be the final step - this will give you something similar to a dry creek bed, and it can look great as a landscape feature. However, most people wrap filter fabric around the gravel and pipe, then backfill the trench with turf for a hidden drainpipe.

The only thing to bear in mind is that this can be a lot of work. Lawn expert Ryan Farley says 'You can DIY a French drain, but I’d be sure to take note of how much work this can be, along with the potential need for permits depending on where you’re going to be draining water. It’s also good to stay aware of anything buried in your yard like pipes or other lines - I’ve seen homeowners accidentally hit things while digging a French drain.'

3. Dig a swale for simple, natural drainage

Swales are another common drainage solution - in fact, they're so common that many people have swales in their yard without knowing, and they're often seen in residential areas.

A swale is a large, wide trench at the bottom of a sloped yard. It's easiest to think of a swale like a large ditch. It disperses water over a huge area, taking it away from the main lawn where your kids might play and slowly draining the way to the edges of the yard while filtering some of it into the soil.

Swales are even simpler than French drains because they're really just big ditches. You don't need gravel or filter fabric; you don't even need a pipe. To build a swale, identify a spot at the bottom of a slope on the lawn. Then, dig a wide trench - at least a couple of yards - along the bottom of the slope. This shouldn't be too deep - probably about a foot. That's it - afterward, you can cover the ditch in turf or plant it with water-loving plants. You can also fill it with natural yard waste like leaves or sticks to help filter the water.

However, simple doesn't mean easy. Though it's a straightforward task, experts warn that digging a swale can be a lot of work. Lawn professional Jeremy Yamaguchi explains that 'You can DIY a swale, but it’s going to be a lot of work. Swales are most effective in large yards, where they can be designed to drive the water over long distances.

French drains are usually the better alternative for smaller yards. Since swales require digging trenches, that means you are going to have to put a lot of time, effort, and physical exertion into digging, which can be less feasible for certain homeowners.'

These DIY solutions can work well, but there are also professional solutions like herringbone or vertical drainage solutions. It's worth considering all the possible drainage ideas out there before committing to a big DIY project.

5 easy and affordable DIY hydroponic garden ideas

Hydroponic gardening simply refers to growing plants without soil and in a water-based solutions instead. While there are plenty of commercially available indoor growing systems, like this hydroponic growing kit from Amazon, it's straightforward to make a DIY hydroponic garden using items you already have at home. Here are five ideas to get you started:

1. Glass jars

This is a method I've often used, working well for propagating the easiest houseplants to grow from cuttings and growing an indoor herb garden.

'Glass jars make a good choice for a small hydroponic garden,' says Julie Bawden-Davis, indoor plant expert at Healthy Houseplants. 'Just make sure to change the water weekly and apply a small amount of fertilizer monthly in the spring and summer months,' she advises.

Failing to change the water is a common hydroponic gardening mistake that leaves your hydroponic plants susceptible to a range of pests and diseases. This is especially important when using a DIY hydroponic garden that doesn't have a filter or pump to clean the water.

The beauty of using clear jars is you can observe the water levels and cleanliness for changing. I also find this particularly useful for observing root development.

The net pots (available at Amazon) is where you will plant your seeds. One way to ensure they fit in the holes is placing them upside down on the lid and drawing around them. You should then cut slightly smaller than your outline so the pots are suspended when placed in the holes.

'I recommend planting seeds in rockwool (from Walmart) and placing it in the net pot so it floats in the water,' Annette advises.

Well, making a DIY mix allows you to add in all the good things that contribute to an optimal growing environment for your pothos, ultimately elevating your pothos plant care.

Of course, there is no single method for making your own pothos potting mix because you can use a range of combinations of ingredients. However, there are some ingredients you should favor over others. Here, we've put together an easy pothos potting mix recipe for you to try - I promise it will make your trailing indoor plant happy.

Pothos potting mix recipe

Whether you just got your hands on one of the best pothos varieties or you're about to repot your pothos, our pothos potting mix recipe will work for you.

You will need:

• Composted pine bark
• Coco coir or peat moss
• Perlite
• Horticultural lime

First, use composted pine bark to make up the largest part of your pothos potting mix: 'Your mix should be about 60% composted pine bark,' says Alex Kantor, owner of Perfect Plants Nursery. Having this in your pothos potting mix provides a well-draining growing medium.

'Then add an even mix of coco coir and perlite,' says Alex. 'These are common products most gardeners have on hand,' he adds.

Why these are the best ingredients for pothos potting mix

There are lots of different ingredients you could use for a pothos potting mix, but the ones included in our recipe are some of the best for supporting pothos growth:

'Pothos plants need good drainage,' says Alex. Pine bark and perlite make the mixture looser, providing this drainage. 'You can even add a layer of horticultural charcoal (from Amazon) in the bottom of the pot before you fill it with your pothos potting mix,' Alex adds.

Without good drainage, pothos plants are prone to overwatering. This can turn a pothos yellow and cause issues like houseplant root rot.

That's what also makes coco coir a useful ingredient to include in your mix. Coco coir absorbs moisture and releases it slowly, maintaining a consistent moisture level for your pothos plant. Drew Michael Scott (A.K.A Lone Fox) knows best when it comes to painting. He renovated his entire Spanish-style home with beautiful DIYs and documented the behind-the-scenes process on Instagram. He put his skills to the test and elevated his breakfast nook by covering the room in trendy stripes. He created a bold stripe pattern yet still managed to make the nook feel calming and appropriate for starting your day in.

Amazingly, he accomplished the look with his trusty DIY method that uses only two materials – some paint and a roll of tape. Speaking to H&G, he tells us exactly how he created the look using an easy to replicate technique.

1. Start with your base color

Decorating with stripes is a classic style that can lift a space and provide some variation. They don't need to be loud or bold, in fact, they can be muted in color and feel chic and sophisticated, blending into the backdrop of a room.

Drew's stripes are an example of the latter. He achieved the look by considering his base color first as this is just as important as the shade of the stripe. He says, 'Start with your walls painted in the color you want to have as the base of your stripes. In my case, the base color in my breakfast nook was already painted the desired color – Dimity by Farrow and Ball.'

Remember to think of the base shade and the striped shade as a pair, as they'll be working together to create an overall pattern.

2. Apply your tape

To create a set of uniform stripes, Drew suggests using masking tape that can be stuck onto your walls and peeled once the paint has been applied and has dried.

'To create sharp lines for your stripes, I recommend using Scotch Blue Painters Tape. If you just painted the base color, I would use Scotch Delicate Tape, as it’s perfect for freshly painted walls.'

Accuracy is key when creating your stripes, but don't worry, Drew has a method to ensure neatness. He creates a template using tape and uses smaller pieces in the gaps to ensure each is the same size. 'I used the tape itself as a spacer between lines by using small pieces of tape above each line to ensure the spacing was aligned when adding each additional stripe of tape.'

3. Paint your stripes

Interestingly, Drew says he first intended to 'paint only a stripe or two in this space'. However, once he began the DIY process he realized how much he loved the look and how much easier it was than he first expected, 'so I went for it!' he says. 'I covered the entire wall with diagonal stripes, and I love the way it turned out!'

Drew recommends using a base coat over the first layer of paint to stop any unwanted smudging. Then he says to 'Follow up with a layer (or two, depending on the color) of the color you want the stripes to be. Once it dries, you can peel it off to reveal the look.' Drew uses Oxford Stone by Farrow & Ball for his stripes. Always double-check the texture of your paint as removing the tape too soon could ruin your stripes' uniformity.

Drew's use of muted colors is clever, as the subtle shades evoke peacefulness. Neutral shades make a great base for decorating as you can bring in any type of decor. Matching the style of the rest of his home, Drew decorated his nook with dark wood accents and antique pieces.

Lone Fox's advice for styling a cozy breakfast nook

Window vacs are really starting to pick up traction as one of the best ways to get glass gleaming, be it for their traditional use, or for cleaning shower glass, mirrors, and car windscreens.

But the vacuum alone won’t do much to shift dirt. For truly spotless results, you need to pair it with a good window cleaning solution that breaks down dust and grime and doesn't leave streaks. But what happens when you run out of the commercial cleaner it comes with?

Rather than splash out on more, you can make your own sustainable cleaner for cleaning windows without streaks. I tried three homemade cleaning solutions for use with my window vacuum and loved them.

The best homemade window cleaning solutions for a window vacuum

Window vacs work by sucking up moisture to minimize streaking and watermarks, leaving behind a truly gleaming window pane. The best homemade window cleaner, therefore, needs to be able to break down grease and grime without clinging to the window and being too sudsy for the vacuum to remove.

I tested a few out (made some window cleaning mistakes so you don’t have to) and settled on three recipes that work perfectly.

Before cleaning windows, you will need a few tools:

• A window vacuum, available at Amazon
• Microfiber cloths from Walmart, or sponges, also from Walmart
• A clean spray bottle, available at Walmart, for easy application

1. Castile soap and water

One of my all-time favorite solutions for freshening up my windows is cleaning with Castille soap mixed with warm water. I started using this method when I picked up a copy of Lisa Bronner’s Soap & Soul from Amazon – it is essentially a Castile soap bible, packed full of nostalgic cleaning tips for just about everything.

This solution is perfect because you can use it both inside and out for clean windows. I followed Lisa’s recipe for this, mixing one tablespoon of Castile soap with one quart of warm water.

For use outside, I soaked a sponge in a bowl of the mixture before slathering the window, buffing to dissolve grime and dust. I then rinsed away the suds with plain water (usually using a watering can from Walmart for ease) before using the window vac to suck up the water for a streak-free shine.

For window cleaning inside, I mixed up the solution in a spray bottle, shaking it up before lightly misting the window and letting it sit for a minute or two before using the vacuum to remove it.

Another big pro to this solution is you can use it to clean window tracks, too, removing built-up grime for a smoother-moving window pane.

2. Vinegar

Cleaning with vinegar is another homemade staple that is great for cleaning windows (or even cleaning glass shower doors) that are obscured by hard or dusty watermarks. The acidity of distilled white vinegar helps to remove limescale from shower glass and windows, eating away at the minerals to make them easier to remove. For that reason, it's far more effective than the Victorian window cleaning hack we recently tried here at Homes & Gardens.

Punteha van Terheyden, head of Solved, explains, ‘Mixing equal parts distilled white vinegar, from Walmart, with warm water and a drop or two of high-quality dish soap (like Dawn from Walmart) creates an easy to use solution for both sides of your window. The dish soap acts as a surfactant, allowing the solution to spread more evenly on the glass and cling to it, making it easier to buff with a microfiber cloth or sponge before removing it with the window vac.

When working outside, you might also want to allow the mixture to sit on the window for a minute or two to break down any limescale deposits before buffing.

She adds, ‘Remember to work from side to side slowly for the vacuum to work properly.'

3. Baking soda and water

It might sound strange to use a powder, but cleaning with baking soda is another great way to remove tough deposits on the outside of windows. I usually use it after a dusty summer rain, but it proved particularly useful after some recent construction left my window coated in grime.

To use baking soda to clean windows, you need to form a paste. You are essentially making a homemade version of The Pink Stuff paste, available at Walmart to mimic our Pink-and-Blink window cleaning hack.

How much you make will depend on the size of your window, but the general idea is to mix a small amount of warm water at a time with baking soda until it forms a spreadable paste that you can scoop up with a cloth or sponge (like a Scrub Daddy, from Walmart).

Then, buff it onto the glass. It sometimes helps to dampen the glass with plain water first to let the paste glide a little more easily. You want the whole pane to be concealed behind the mixture before rinsing it away with water again.

This doesn't have to be perfect, just enough to remove most of the small soda granules before using the window vac to suck up the rest, leaving a gleaming window behind.

Baking soda works perfectly because it acts as a a gentle abrasive, without scratching the window, making it easy to remove difficult, stuck-on grime.

Why are my windows streaky after using a window vacuum?

If your windows still look streaky after using a window vacuum, it may be that you have pressed too hard or moved too quickly when using it to remove water. It is a delicate art that needs some practice to get right.

If you are well-practiced, however, and the streaks are a recent occurrence, the rubber edge on the window vac may have worn down with heavy use, creating an uneven surface that leaves streaks. It may be time for a replacement. Amazon window vacuums are plentiful and available for quick delivery.

What should you not use to clean windows?

When cleaning windows, it is best to avoid any harsh chemicals such as bleach, or strong abrasives like hard bristled brushes, as these can damage the glass, leaving permanent scratches and cloudy marks.

I don't know about you, but when I returned to my London flat after a month away visiting family for the holidays, all of my houseplants had turned yellow and brown. Though there's not much time for plant parenthood in my busy schedule, I can't stand the look (or idea) of bringing plastic houseplants into my home. Thus, constantly dying plants. Nothing can lower your design like browning or yellowing houseplants on every surface. This can happen despite your best efforts if you have a busy schedule or have picked difficult plants. Crochet takes this labor out. The plants require no care to look green and perky all year round.

I also love these crochet plants as an alternative to living plants because they don't have the artificial feel of more traditional plastic plants. As our social media editor, Anna Aylward predicted, 'Artificial plants' are on the list of 'Out for 2025.' Rather than tapping into undesirable trends that date your interiors, Foster's plant idea is made of sustainable cotton fabric.

To style crochet plants like Sutton Foster, I would recommend pairing several plants together to create a cozy, indoor crochet garden. Stying these alongside books on vertical living room shelving would be another great way to showcase them. I also love the idea of buying or creating a collection of crochet flowers and featuring them in vases on different surfaces.

Whether you love DIY or hate it, Sutton Foster's crafty idea is easy to replicate in any home. It's simple to care for, and has an elevated appearance.

When it comes to home maintenance, saving money on the fix is often a high priority. From hanging shelves, sorting plumbing issues and even redecorating, there are a myriad tasks around the home which can be dealt with yourself.

But there are also times when expert help is not only necessary, but the sooner you call in the pros, the better.

Here, I spoke to our panel of home experts for their tips on the nine problems and projects you should leave to a pro.

How to know when it's time to call the pros

1. Serious mold issues

If you identify any of the common types of household mold in your home, and your attempts to clean mold off walls or get rid of black mold fail, it's crucial to call in the pros.

This is especially relevant where the surface area of the mold is large.

Karina Toner, cleaning expert and operations manager at Spekless warns, 'Mold can spread quickly and pose serious health risks, such as respiratory issues or allergic reactions. DIY treatments often miss spores hidden in walls or under surfaces, allowing the mold to regrow. Professionals can assess the extent of the problem and safely remove all traces using specialized equipment.'

Really, as Toner advises, you should call the pros at the very first sign of mold, which may be discoloration or wondering why your house smells musty, and particularly if the mold covers an area larger than 10 square feet, or, importantly, recurs after cleaning.

Additionally, a lesser-known cause of serious mold issues is vinyl flooring, says Evie Graham, professional cleaner and founder of Waste Direct, even if you know how to clean vinyl floors properly.

She explains, 'Most cleaning guides won't tell you this but luxury vinyl flooring has become a silent harbinger of serious mold issues. Through my professional experience, I've discovered that the waterproof nature of luxury vinyl actually masks underlying moisture problems.

'When clients attempt DIY cleaning of what appears to be surface mold, they often miss the extensive colonization happening beneath. Call professionals immediately if you spot even minimal discoloration on vinyl flooring – this isn't a surface issue you can tackle with household cleaners.'

Then, once cleared, it may be worth investing in one of the best dehumidifiers to keep humidity – and mold – at bay.

2. Electrical failures

While it's possible to fix loose outlets or change a lightbulb above the stairs, when it comes to electrical failures, always leave it to the experts to avoid risk of electrocution or fire.

Al Fagundes, founder of A. Fagundes Plumbing & Heating Inc. says, 'Messing with electrical components without proper training can cause shocks, fires, or permanent system damage. These are issues to address immediately, as delays can escalate the risk and repair costs.'

For example, if you encounter any common thermostat problems, your HVAC system isn't powering on, or you notice flickering lights when the unit runs, 'it's time to step back,' advises Fagundes.

3. Refrigerant leaks

While refrigerant leaks may be one of the reasons your AC unit freezes up, fixing it should always be left to professionals.

Josh Mitchell, HVAC technician and founder of AirConditionerLab, says, 'Dealing with refrigerants isn't just about skill – it's about legality. Due to their potential environmental impact, handling refrigerants requires certification under EPA regulations. Refrigerant leaks can also be a sign of bigger problems with the system.'

Therefore, it's imperative to call an expert immediately upon suspicion or detection of a leak, whether your air conditioner is leaking water or your AC vents are dripping water.

'Delaying could lead to higher operational costs and system failure,' adds Mitchell.

4. Severe pest infestations

One of the unfortunate constants in life is having to deal with pests, and while a few ants or flies may be manageable, getting rid of termites, bed bugs or dealing with common winter pest infestations may be a different story.

As professional cleaner Toner says, 'Pests can cause structural damage, spread disease, and are difficult to eliminate without proper training and tools.'

So, either call the pros immediately after identifying any indoor pests, or seeing signs of one including droppings, teeth marks, nests. If you have tried some DIY methods, such as using baking soda to kill ants or getting rid of moths with vinegar and the pests have come back, or you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, it's time to call in the pros.

It's important to note that 'waiting too long can lead to significant damage or increased costs,' warns Toner.

5. Grease clogs

While it is possible to fix a clogged kitchen sink, if grease is one of the reasons why your sink won't drain, it's best to call in a professional plumber.

Cleaning expert Graham says, 'Crytallized grease blockages in modern drainage systems are virtually impossible to clear without professional intervention. These aren't your standard clogs,' which can be cleared with products such as the number one bestselling Drano Max Gel Drain Clog Remover and Cleaner for Shower or Sink Drains available at Amazon.

'When cooking oils combine with biodegradable detergents (especially eco-friendly ones) they create rock-hard crystalline structures that bond chemically with pipes,' continues Graham.

'I've seen countless cases where DIY drain cleaning solutions actually accelerated pipe deterioration. The moment your drain starts gurgling or draining slowing – especially if you use eco-friendly products – call a professional.

'Those initial symptoms indicate crystallization has begun, and every DIY attempt only compounds the problem,' specifically when dealing with grease and fat blockages.

6. A faulty furnace or boiler

Much like electrical failures, a faulty furnace or boiler that leaves you wondering why your house is so cold even with heating should be fixed by an expert.

As Robert Hamerly, principal at GreenSavers, says, 'If your furnace or boiler seems faulty, you'll want to get a professional to handle it as quickly as possible. These types of machines function via pressurization and combustion, which should be daunting enough to give any DIY-er pause.

'Call someone in to fix up your system, or better yet, consider replacing a faulty furnace or boiler with a fully electric heat pump or heat pump water heater to increase efficiency and sustainability overall.'

If you're wondering how long a furnace lasts, the average lifespan is between ten and twenty years, but this will depend on usage, model, and the size of the home it is used to heat.

'And yes, you will definitely want to call a professional to do that installation process,' adds Hamerly.

7. Any issue that simple HVAC maintenance won't fix

Aside from refrigerant leaks, Max Veggeberg, CEO and founder of Tetra, says, 'Homeowners should start with simple maintenance like replacing air filters, and ensuring vents are unblocked. Address drafts by sealing windows and doors (with caulk, such as the GE Advanced Silicone Caulk for Kitchen & Bathroom available at Amazon) and adding insulation in key areas.

'If these steps don't solve issues like temperature changes, cold spots, or inefficiencies – or if you notice strange odors, unusual noises, or need help with duct work, refrigerant, or electrical repairs – it's time to call a professional.'

This is because all of these issues require specialized training and tools, and therefore should be left to licensed, trained professionals. 'Improper repairs can lead to safety risks, such as electrical hazards or compromised air quality, and can also reduce system, efficiency, increase bills, or cause further damage.'

You should also endeavor to have your HVAC system serviced at least once annually, and ideally twice.

8. Extensive water damage

Water damage is one of the most devastating home disasters, which is why it's important to get it dealt with quickly, efficiently, and, most importantly – professionally, whether you need to get water out of a carpet after a flood, or fix a ceiling with water damage.

Professional cleaner Toner says, 'Water damage can lead to structural issues and mold growth if not addressed correctly. Professionals use moisture meters and industrial-grade dryers to thoroughly mitigate damage.'

So, as soon as you notice any signs of water damage, such as soaked carpets, sagging ceilings, or warped walls, call in the pros. In the meantime, it will be useful to know how to dry waterlogged items to minimize damage to your belongings.

9. Carbon monoxide issues

Finally, unlike smells that could be a sign of danger in your home, carbon monoxide is odorless and virtually undetectable – which is why it's so important to install carbon monoxide alarms and call an expert if you suspect any issue at all around your home that may be causing a carbon monoxide leak.

Simon Bernath, CEO and founder of FurnacePrices.ca says, 'If there is anything that suggests an issue, like a cracked heat exchanger or any other issue which could be causing a carbon monoxide leak for instance, that is something that should be dealt with by a professional immediately.

'So, make sure you have working detectors installed, and test them at the start of the heating season to make sure they're working. And don't ignore it if it's going off but the furnace or heating system otherwise seems to be working OK.'

Also, don't forget to test your smoke detector, either, if you don't have a combined alarm model.

Drew is undoubtedly best known for his amazing, elevated DIYs, so we were pleased to see that in a recent Instagram video, he shared his favorite hacks of 2024 to get us all inspired for the new year.

Among them, he named the DIY book sconce as the most popular video he posted that year. This viral hack looks very impressive, but as Drew breaks down the steps to create it, any DIYer with some time and patience could recreate this DIY project. So let's take a look at the lighting hack and see how Lone Fox makes a stylish sconce using an old book.

1. Select your book and sconce

The most important part of this DIY is choosing the right sconce light and book to suit your bookshelf style. Acknowledging the style of your bookcase decor is crucial but also remember to measure your shelves to ensure that the lamp is the right size for the area.

In the video, Drew chooses a classic brass sconce with a cream shade and pairs this with a vintage-looking encyclopedia. He considers the style of his bookshelf and goes down the classic, antique-style route with his choices so that they will integrate seamlessly.

2. Remove the cord from your sconce

Drew purchased a light with cording as the wiring can be removed and then replaced later in the making process. This idea will only work with a plug-in sconce as you'll need to take out the cording and rewire it.

He explains the first step by saying, 'So what I had to do was remove the cord to make it a hardwired sconce and then we’re going to add the cord back again later.'

Remember to use pliers when removing the wiring as this step can get fiddly. It's important to ensure precision and not cut the critical electrical component of the lamp. For this step, do your homework and swat up on rewiring, you might want do some extra research alongside Drew's video.

3. Get your book prepped

The bookshelf wealth trend was big in 2024 and will continue to be a popular style choice this year, and although you could make this hack work with any book, going with something vintage will work with that trendy, characterful look.

Drew chose an antique-style encyclopedia. It's hefty in size and has a thick spine, which works for the dowelling he later uses. We recommend visiting a thrift store when purchasing your book as it's cost-effective and repurposes a once-neglected object. Better yet, you can often find older books that are vintage in style, just like Drew's.

He says, 'I took the pages out, so it’s still readable but we just want the spine and cover for the sconce.' It's best to remove the pages all in one if possible to keep the book intact, ensuring it can still be read. You should be left with an entirely empty book with just the exterior remaining.

4. Cut and stick your dowelling

The dowelling will be the main foundation of the sconce and will allow the lamp to stand up and shine. The required width of your doweling will depend on the size of the book, so make sure to measure the width of the spine before purchasing your material.

Drew says 'I got some wooden doweling from the hardware store that was the same exact width of the book. I bought a 2-inch wide wooden dowel and the spine of my book was 2 inches.'

He then, 'Laid the book on the actual dowel and cut it down to the size of the book so we ended up with one piece that actually fit perfectly inside. I’m using some wood glue to adhere this in. You can also do hot glue or whatever you have.'

Once your dowelling is securely glued into the spine, cut two additional pieces of wood. 'These are two inches shorter than the first one so that there’s a gap at the bottom for the wiring to go through.' Drew says. 'Once it’s all glued down you’ll see that there's an open channel at the bottom.'

5. Rewire

Get ready for the technical part – the rewiring. This fiddly step is the most tricky element of this DIY so be patient and ensure accuracy, you don't want a lamp that doesn't light up!

Firstly drill through the first layer of wood so your wiring can thread right through. Drew explains this by saying, 'I found a drill bit that was the same width as the threading on the sconce and I just drilled through only that first piece of wood because our wiring will go through there.' Note that you should drill from the exterior spine into the interior piece of wood.

Once you have pulled the wiring through it should be easy to secure the lamp. He moves on to say, 'I threaded through the wiring, pressed firmly, and was able to easily twist the lamp in, it had a nice snug fit.'

The last step requires you to reattach the wire to the cord so that you can plug it back into the wall. Using pliers, weave the wire together with the main outer cord and then use the cap to hold and crimp them into place. Again, this is the bit to look into more if you are unsure how to attach the wires back together. It's a simple job but one not to rush.

6. Add the finishing touches and style

Now comes the satisfying part – the styling! Simply slot your sconce into your area of choice, switch it on, and admire your niftiness from afar.

To ensure that the sconce blends into the shelves, surround it with other books and trinkets. You want to create a cozy, homely-feeling reading nook so don't be afraid to add lots of decor and books to your shelving unit.

Drew Michael Scott, more commonly known as Lone Fox, is a DIY expert who loves blending vintage styles with new and exciting design trends. From replastering to painting and tiling, Drew has tried it all and often posts about it on his Instagram, so he's the perfect person to guide you through your renovating journey.

Drew renovated his entire home throughout 2024 and has recently shared the behind-the-scenes of the remodeling process. Guiding us through the year, Drew shows us the main areas he renovated in his 1929 Spanish revival-style home and the steps he took to get there. It's fair to say he has drastically transformed the space whilst acknowledging the original architecture and style of the property. Let's take a look at Drew's run-through and his exciting year of DIY.

January – the bathroom plaster project

Drew starts the year off strong by completely redesigning his dated bathroom using a plastering technique that entirely masks the original tiles. Describing the space as 'the biggest controversy of 2024', Drew's original space once lacked character and personality but became virtually unrecognizable once plastered.

Piling on thick layers of plaster, he explains 'I plastered over the tiles floor to ceiling.' He added a much-needed dose of texture in the bathroom and finished the space with cream paint. The texture and color choice transform the room into a rustic and cozy haven, only emphasized by the antique decor and brass hardware, reminiscent of the Spanish revival style.

Drew's method is budget-friendly as well as time-efficient, as renovating is a costly job. Drew says he 'saved a ton of money' not having to remove the original tiles, so he instead plastered over them. And a whole just later it still looks perfect, and is still water tight.

February – the pass through room

In February, Drew tackled the 'pass through' room, located at the entrance of his bedroom. He decided to cover the walls entirely in an unconventional material –wood flooring.

Drew first ripped out the original cabinets which gave the area more space, allowing for the room to be entirely reutilized. He then replaced the floor with wood flooring and covered the walls with the same material. Describing the finished result as 'so warm and cozy', Drew says he loves the feel of the new space which he now uses as a little home office. You can see in Drew's Instagram post of his office that he matches the furniture and decor to the wooden floors and walls, creating a unified nook.

March – the red entrway

Back in March Drew took us a little by surprise and decided to transform his entryway into a cottage-style passageway. Each door is coordinated in a deep red lacquer, creating a fun and whimsical twist on a sometimes overlooked space.

Drew says he 'was feeling super creative and wanted to do something daring', and it's fair to say he's done just that. He makes sure to match the red with other decor in the space like the rug and mirror so it feels like a cohesive look. The red frames each doorway in the hall and acts as a bold focal point that will entice guests into entering. Drew says, 'I know it’s not for everyone' but we are obsessed with this fun decorating move that harnesses his love for color and country-style interiors.

April – the paint mistake

Renovation is not an easy process. It's inevitable to be met with challenges and hiccups. Drew proves this when he shows us his stairwell transformation which he entirely repaints for a second time.

Initially starting with a dark brown, Drew painted his entryway in this shade before changing his mind and going for a lighter color. 'In April, I painted all the walls a dark brown and then painted over them in this nice nude color.' Drew says. While decorating with brown can be warm and cozy, it's not always appropriate in spaces that lack light as it can overwhelm and darken the overall feel. Drew recognized this and went for a light nude to lift the entryway and give it a dose of life.

Always consider the space and its architecture before committing to a paint color as this can make or break the design of any space. Don't be put off if you don't like your initial choice, like Drew you too can start again.

May – the bedroom overhaul

Drew says 'In May we finally got to my bedroom'. One of the most exciting spaces to decorate, the bedroom is key as you'll be sleeping and relaxing there every evening. 'Waking up here is so peaceful every day' explains Drew, and we can see why. Let's take a look at the few things Drew does to make the space feel like a haven.

Paint is the first step to creating a thought-out scheme. Drew says, 'We painted the ceiling this golden color' which brings warmth and vibrancy to the space. Drew sticks to a neutral palette for the rest of the room to not overwhelm it with too many shades.

He explains that he did some DIY on a hutch with some brown paint and varnish to give it an old, antique look. Once that was completed, the bigger furniture pieces were positioned, such as the bed, curtains, lighting, and art. Create an inviting space that feels lived-in by incorporating older pieces like picture frames or table lamps.

June – the guest bedroom

What we love about Drew's home is each room's unique character which is different yet matches the overall Spanish revival style. This is no different when it comes to the guest room, where Drew goes for vintage-style wallpaper and antique decor, reminiscent of a country cottage.

Starting this area in June, he begins with wallpaper which inspires the rest of the room, saying, 'I painted everything else this green color that I pulled from the wallpaper.' The vintage design allowed for the later vintage decor to be added, like the vintage dresser and lighting. These elements are Drew's favorites he explains as they're 'so eclectic' and make the room charming and personal.

A top tip to creating character is using antique and vintage pieces as they bring a lived-in feel and warmth that newer pieces lack. If vintage isn't your thing, try vintage-inspired pieces that have an old feel, like brass-finished hardware or patterned wallpaper.

July – the breakfast nook

One of our favorite rooms in Drew's house is his breakfast nook, it's inviting, charming, and refreshing. He's blended old and new in this space by using antique pieces and contemporary furniture, creating a harmonious balance of charm and elegance.

Drew says the space 'just wasn't doing enough' before and decided to revamp it in true Drew fashion with bold striped walls. He says they 'amped' the room up and gave it a playfulness that it was previously lacking. If you are new to DIY projects or come up against wonky cuts when using a saw, you're most likely in need of a DIY saw guide. It'll give you perfectly straight cuts and you can make your own in just a few simple steps.

Typically made from plywood or MDF, a DIY saw guide is most often needed for long, straight cuts. They’re easy to make, easy to use and give great results according to our home maintenance experts.

What you'll need to build a DIY track guide

To make a DIY saw guide, you'll need the help of a circular saw and a few other tools as Jimmy Harris of We Buy Houses In West Georgia points out, ‘I made one a few years ago and still have it and use it’.

Swindle suggests another couple of DIY tools to help complete the process. ‘You’ll need clamps to secure the guide and work piece during cutting. Don’t forget sandpaper to smooth edges after cutting.’

John Swindle, Owner of Chase Roof Inspections shares the benefits of using a saw guide, explaining, 'They prevent wandering cuts, minimize splintering, and help you avoid uneven edges on plywood and wooden boards.’

He adds, 'They're great for DIYers, furniture builders, general construction workers, and woodworkers who need straight, accurate cuts. Those with dedicated track saw systems will already have what they need.

You will need:

• Drill
• Screws

Alongside the tools, Harris and Swindle both recommend using plywood, or MDF for your DIY saw guide. Swindle adds, ‘Use straight-grained plywood or MDF, typically half inch thick for stability.’

‘They are inexpensive, easy to cut, and offer a smooth surface for the saw to glide along. High-quality, straight-grained plywood works best to avoid warping over time.’

How to build a DIY saw step-by-step guide

A DIY saw guide can be any size you want, but if you’re cutting a lot of standard size board Harris recommends an 8ft x 4ft sheet of plywood to work with.

1. Measure and mark

To start Harris says, ‘From the bottom left side of the half inch plywood on the eight foot side, measure three inches over and make a mark.'

Then, repeat the three-inch measurement at the top left of the eight foot side. To finish, pop a chalk line on your three-inch marks to get a straight line.

2. Add aluminum channel

The aluminum channel is the guide for the saw to ensure straight cuts. Harris says, ‘Predrill holes on the bottom of your aluminum channel, such as the Steelworks Aluminum Weldable Trim Channel from Lowes) every six inches.’

Then align your aluminum channel to the right-hand side of your three-inch line and screw the aluminum channel to the plywood, making sure to keep your channel on the chalk line.

Alternatively, you can use a length of factory cut wood which will have a straight edge.

3. Cut to size

To create the right size guide for your saw Harris says, ‘Use your circular saw to cut the excess plywood from your guide. Raise your saw blade so just enough of the blade is showing to cut through the plywood.’

On the largest side of your plywood sheet, align the base of your circular saw against the aluminum track so the blade is furthest from the aluminum guide and cut. 'This will leave you with around four to five inches of plywood which will be your guide for future cuts,' adds Harris.

Put the large piece of plywood to the side for a future DIY project or to make a smaller DIY saw guide.

4. Make guide double-sided

The guide will now have one edge ready to use, but Harris suggests another cut so you have two edges. He says, ‘This will allow you to be able to use both sides of the guide, depending on what your needs are.’

And it's perfect for left or right-handed people.

To create the second straight edge, align the base of the circular saw on the three-inch side of the aluminum guide, so the blade is closest to the aluminum guide, and cut. Now your guide is ready to use.

If you've bailed out of previous projects for the difficulty of getting a straight edge, it might be time to finish your home DIY projects.

How do you use a saw guide?

Before you start up your saw, check by eye and make sure that the blade is lined up with your cut line and clamp your guide firmly to the material. Then, use your dominant hand to push your saw, and your non-dominant hand to hold the saw guide.

Swindle says when running along the guide, keep a consistent speed and pressure.

Harris adds, ‘Move the saw slowly and don’t try to go too fast.’ Don't force the blade. Circular saws cut up so you can flip the wood over, but that is not necessary if you have the correct blade.’

This stops tear out and gives a neater cut on the surface that is seen.

What is the best way to secure a saw guide?

When using a saw guide it's commonly used with a power tool, so for your safety it needs to be secured. But it's not just for your protection as Harris explains, ‘A saw guide needs to be secure, if it’s not it can lead to a poor cut on the wood.’

To avoid injury, or a wonky cut Harris advises clamping your guide to the material you want to cut.

Swindle adds, ‘Use quick release clamps’, such as the these WORKPRO Bar Clamps from Amazon. You squeeze the handle to get a vice-like grip on wood. But if you don’t have clamps to hand, Swindle suggests screwing the guide into the workbench, if the material allows.

But be warned, as I know from experience that will leave screw holes in the wood. So make sure to screw into a side of the wood you don’t want, or turn it over to cut, leaving the screw holes on the underside of the wood.

The best way to get a clean cut?

To get a cleaner cut Swindle says ‘Use a blade with more teeth for finer cuts.’ Harris adds, ‘The more teeth on the blade, the cleaner the cut you will get.’

The common choice for blades that come packaged with a new circular saw is 24 teeth. Choose a blade with 40 or 60 teeth, such as the Makita 40T Carbide-Tipped Circular Saw Blade from Amazon, this will be marked as 40T or 60T.

One note of caution when choosing a new blade is to make sure it's the right size for your circular saw. If you have a 165mm saw, you need a 165mm saw blade.

The good news is that this isn't a job that is too tricky to get to grips with, but construction pros told me there are six mistakes they see time and time again, and shared their tips for avoiding those including using the wrong tools, not leaving expansion gaps and failing to check measurements before beginning.

Whether you are building a home from scratch, have taken on a fixer upper or have a remodel on the go, this is really is one of those DIY skills every homeowner should know and is a project well worth mastering.

Common drywall mistakes the pros often see see

Before hanging drywall, it is important to understand exactly what drywall is. It is often also referred to as plasterboard, wallboard, gypsum board and sheet rock.

Drywall was designed as an alternative to traditional plastering methods involving mortar mixes. It is fixed to walls and ceilings where it results in a smooth finish ready for a skim coat or, in some cases, to be painted directly onto.

Drywall is made using a layer of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two sheets of what is, essentially, thick paper.

Here are the common mistakes our construction pros urge you to avoid.

1. Using the wrong tools for the job

All the experts we spoke to agreed that one of the biggest no-nos out there when hanging drywall is to use the wrong DIY tools, or to start ill prepared.

'The basic tools needed are a utility knife, drywall saw, screw gun, and T-square,' advises Yaeir Moinzadeh, a MHIC licensed contractor and the owner of Blue Rise Baltimore Roofing. 'A drywall lift will save your back when placing ceilings. It is also best to use a stud finder with wire detection.'

Yaeir adds, 'Good detection of the joists, which are usually on 16 or 24-inch centers, is also important. Of course, once any single joist is found, subsequent measurements may be taken from it. Marking on the floor where studs are located makes for easy reference.'

Brandon Walker, construction manager at ASAP Resoration, adds 'The best tools for most drywall jobs will be a sharp utility knife with a whole lot of disposable blades, a pencil, chalk line, or both, a straight edge, an angle finder, a level, and a drywall saw or knife.'

2. Not leaving an expansion gap

The next error DIYers often make, according to Brandon Walker, is to fail to leave enough of a gap around the edge of the drywall sheets and the wall.

'For full sheets, make sure to leave half an inch gap between the floor, or sill plate, and the start of the drywall,' explains Brandon. 'This is an expansion gap that the structure will need for thermal difference in the seasons in order to accommodate expansion and contraction, and it will allow for your flooring to float and do the same.

'If there is no gap at the floor, then the flooring will be abutting against it, and this will result in bowing, buckling or worse with the flooring as it expands and contracts with the seasons,' warns Brandon.

The message? Don't let this mistake ruin your wooden flooring ideas.

3. Failing to check your measurements

While the job of measuring and cutting whole sheets of drywall to fit your wall is usually pretty straightforward, pre-cutting openings to fit over or around sockets, switches and other electrical outlets can be a little trickier to get right, especially if you don't know how to read a tape measure properly.

One of the biggest mistakes seen by Alfie Burrows, director at AB Drylining, is fixing the sheets to the wall before double checking these openings are in the correct place.

'A common mistake people make is screwing the drywall to the framing before checking the openings for plug sockets, ultimately causing the drywall to break,' explains Alfie. 'Patching this up can be pretty challenging and time-consuming. Even if you make careful measurements, it is important to check the fit before you screw the drywall into the frame.

'Ideally, the drywall should slide easily over sockets,' continues Alfie. 'If the fit is tight, fasten the drywall with a couple of screws along the top edge of the sheet and use a Stanley knife to trim any excess along the edges of the socket. Stanley knives are perfect for this task due to the precision and control they provide.'

4. Choosing the wrong drywall

It is so important to choose the correct drywall for your needs – failure to do so could result in disaster. It's one of the things construction pros always notice about terrible bathroom remodels as incorrect drywall choices can lead to leaks and mold.

'The correct drywall depends on the project that is being done,' explains Brandon Walker. 'If the project is a bathroom, then you will need a completely different kind of drywall or sheet rock than you would in a hallway. If you are trying to build a boathouse, then it would be entirely different drywall than if you were building a sunroom in the southwest. Application dictates the materials needed in most respects.'

'Selecting the proper drywall is very important,' agrees Yaeir Moinzadeh. 'It is recommended to use a the thickness of 1/2 inch for walls and 5/8 inch for ceilings. Fire-resistant drywall is required in garages and places near sources of heat.'

In bathrooms, or areas of high moisture and humidity, extra care needs to go into selecting the correct materials for the job if you don't want to find yourself looking into how to get rid of bathroom ceiling mold any time soon.

'When it comes to hanging drywall in your bathroom or kitchen, it is wise to use moisture-resistant sheets like green board or purple drywall,' says Alfie Burrows. 'This will protect your space from every drip and splash, reducing the risk of mold and mildew.'

It is also important to take into account the proportions of your room when choosing drywall. The way in which your joists are spaced will play a big part in the size of sheets that will be best.

'You need to think about the spacing between the joists, which is generally either 400mm (16") or 600mm (23.6"),' explains Aflie Burrows. 'For 400mm spaced studs, 9.5mm (0.37") plasterboard is commonly used, whereas 12.5mm (1/2") is the standard for 600mm spacing. However, if you are looking for enhanced fire resistance or sound insulation, it makes sense to choose a thicker 15mm (0.69") board.'

5. Missing the joists when screwing in boards

When fixing drywall sheets to the walls you need something to screw them into – most commonly the studs (or joists).

'Finding studs is usually fairly easy and can be done with a stud finder, which is essentially an ultrasound machine made specifically for finding wood beneath drywall,' reassures Brandon Walker.

'If you don’t have one of these, then you can use a golf ball or any other resonator to tap on the wall and notice when the sound changes. Once you hear a thicker noise as the ball bounces, then you can be pretty sure a stud is behind that part of the drywall.'

A good stud finder will also come in handy when it comes to how to secure furniture to a wall.

6. Underestimating how long hanging drywall takes

You need to be realistic about how long any kind of DIY job is going to take, but in the case of those that can be particularly disruptive or messy it is more important than ever – especially if you are struggling to know how to finish your home DIY projects.

'Most of the time, people usually underestimate just how long it's going to take to get the job done,' says Yaeir Moinzadeh. 'A typical room takes 2-3 days to get the hanging and finishing job completed.'

'The time it takes to do a job will depend on the skills of the person doing the job, as well as the size of the project to begin with,' points out Brandon Walker. 'If you are trying to renovate an entire home, then that is a big drywall project and it will take longer than simply doing a patch for someone who punched through a wall.'

6 ways to protect blueberry bushes in winter

Different varieties of blueberries are hardy down to US hardiness zone 3, however, the most commonly grown varieties can tolerate winters down to US hardiness zone 5. No matter their hardiness, if you plant blueberries in the fall they will want protection from extreme cold during their first winter and bushes grown in containers will benefit from some winter protection.

1. Mulch

Mulching will help to protect the plant’s roots, insulating them from the frost. It is a highly beneficial way of stopping the soil from freezing in winter, protecting blueberries during cold periods, and providing nutrients as the material breaks down. Opt for organic acidic types of mulch, such as bark, pine needles, wood chip, or leaf mold, and put down a layer 2-3 inches thick before the first frost in fall.

2. Water

It may appear counterintuitive, however, watering blueberry bushes can protect them in winter. Strong and well-watered plants can cope better with cold conditions than stressed bushes. Watering plants before a frost helps protect blueberry bushes in winter, as that moist soil will hold more warmth into the night than dry soil.

Watering the soil, especially if it has been a dry fall, before a frost is incoming will help insulate the plant’s roots against the incoming cold. Always water the soil and not the plants ahead of frosts, as any moisture on the plants themselves will freeze and do damage.

3. Wrap individual plants

It can be wrapped around the bushes to trap heat from the soil and form a protective environment around them. Frost cloth, also known as horticultural fleece, can raise the temperature around bushes by 5-10 degrees when used correctly. This includes covering the entire bush, all the way to the ground, and ensuring the frost cloth is weighed down to keep it in place overnight.

4. Make DIY tunnels

If you have several young blueberry bushes growing in rows, then you can alternatively construct a DIY cloche tunnel rather than protecting individual plants. Plastic sheets, or frost cloth, can be laid over hoops made from metal or plastic - such as PVC pipes - and weighed down at the edges to keep them in place.

Plastic coverings will create polytunnel-like growing conditions, keeping the soil and plants warm during winter, however, the plastic should be removed during warmer days to prevent plants from getting too warm.

5. Move blueberries growing in pots

If you grow blueberries in pots, move them to a protective position for winter to ensure bushes overwinter safely. The roots of fruit growing in pots as part of a container garden are more susceptible to frosts than when growing in the ground, due to the limited protection from the soil around them.

Move the container indoors over winter, or to a protected spot to lessen the risk of damage from frost or bitter cold winds and wrap the container in burlap or frost cloth to keep those roots insulated.

6. Stake bushes

However, lighting your home can be tricky. Sometimes you're left with more lights than you know what to do with. If you have several feet of wire looking untidy around your lights, you've probably wondered if there's a way to shorten the cables.

I spoke to expert electricians and lighting experts. While they warn against trimming your outdoor Christmas lights, there are a couple of methods to cut your lights down to size. This is all you need to know about shortening outdoor Christmas lights.

Use zipties or velcro

Most of the experts recommend leaving your lights alone. Lighting expert Dara Greaney says 'I don't recommend shortening Christmas lights. You would need to cut the wires, strip them, and splice them back together in a watertight and windproof fashion.'

Instead, Forrest Webber explains that 'Zip ties are the simplest, safest way to manage extra length without permanently altering the lights. Gather the extra length of lights neatly into small loops. Use zip ties to secure the loops together at multiple points to keep them tidy.'

Then, once the lights are bundled up, Forrest says you just need to 'Tuck the bundled section out of view when hanging or arranging the lights. It's quick, inexpensive, and doesn't affect the lights' functionality. If you need the entire length, you can easily undo it.'

Zip ties are available at Home Depot or any other hardware store. However, a better option is to use Velcro ties (available at Amazon) which are only a couple of dollars more expensive and can be reused indefinitely.

How to cut string lights

You can cut Christmas lights to size, but only certain types. Forrest Weber explains 'Some string lights are designed to be cut, such as LED lights labeled as "customizable" or "cut-to-fit." Regular string lights without cut marks shouldn't be modified, as cutting the wrong point will break the circuit and stop the lights from working.'

If you have lights you can cut, the process is simple. Forrest says 'Most cuttable lights have designated points marked between bulbs. Only cut at these points. Use sharp wire cutters to make a clean snip. Use heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape to cover and protect the exposed ends. This prevents short circuits or damage.'

How to install zip plugs

With the lights cut, you need to use a zip plug. Forrest Webber explains that 'A zip plug safely creates a new connection after cutting string lights.' Expert Dara Greaney warns that 'They are not the easiest to use. You are poking a metal rod into the wire hoping to make a connection. They're not my favorite as you are often out troubleshooting errors. If you get a strong connection and lock it in, then it does make shortening Christmas lights easy.' Zip plugs are widely available at Amazon or any hardware store.

The process is relatively simple. Dara says to 'Remove the back slider from the plug. Insert the zip into the plug, ensuring the ribbed side is on the right (for correct polarity) and the tip goes into the end channel. Bend the zip to make contact with sharp points. Then, slide the back cover onto the plug.'

With this done, Forrest says 'Slide or snap the cover shut tightly to secure the connection. Plug the lights into an outlet to ensure the connection is successful.'

How to install a zip socket

You also need to add a zip socket. Forrest Webber explains 'A zip socket is the counterpart to the plug, creating a safe endpoint for the light string.'

The process is similar to a zip plug. Forrest says:

• 'Cut the string at the correct spot and untangle any loose ends
• Slide the cover open to expose the internal prongs
• Position the wire so the prongs puncture the insulation and connect to the wire
• Snap or slide the cover securely into place
• Attach a bulb or the lights to confirm the socket works'

However, safety is paramount. Forrest warns 'Always disconnect lights from power before cutting or modifying them. Use heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape to cover cut ends and protect against shorts.

'After cutting or installing plugs, test the lights to ensure everything works before moving on.' As ever, heat shrink tubing is easy to find at Home Depot or other hardware stores.

Don't shorten your lights too much, however. You need more than you think, and following the fifty-per-foot rule will make for a much better light display. On top of that, shortening your lights is only half the battle. It's also worth learning how to attach them to tricky surfaces like brick walls so that they're safe and secure.

There's nothing like a Christmas light display over the holidays. They bring a little light and color to your home during the darkest, coldest month of the year.

However, this can appear tricky if you have brick walls. You don't want to have to drill any hooks into the walls just for the holidays, because it's a lot of work for such a short part of the year.

Thankfully, you don't have to. I spoke to experts about the best way to fix outdoor Christmas lights to a brick wall, and they gave me simple solutions free from finicky DIY.

1. Brick clips

By far the easiest way to attach Christmas lights to brick is to use brick clips. Inexpensive and widely available - such as this 10-pack of brick clips for $10.97 at Walmart - brick clips clip onto the edges of the brick and have a little hook for hanging lights.

Home expert Steven Menaat explains that 'The most effective way to attach Christmas lights to brick is brick clips, which you can purchase in any hardware store. You use them by jamming them into the spaces in between bricks, and they fit perfectly well when you size up the spaces properly. From there, you can hang any corded lights and make your space festive without any hassle.'

There are a lot of benefits to this. Home renovation expert Myles Robinson explains that 'Brick clips are specially designed to grip onto the edges of the bricks without requiring nails, screws, or adhesives. They’re sturdy and reusable, making them a common choice for many, especially if you hang lights on brick year after year.' Unlike the other methods below, there's no risk of marking the brickwork or having to do extensive DIY.

2. Hot glue

However, brick clips aren't feasible for every wall. Steven Mena told me 'For flatter brick walls that have no mortar spaces between bricks, or where the bricks are flush to the mortar, the best trick is using a hot glue gun. It works wonders especially when the bricks aren’t as gritty or sandy.'

The method is simple. Steven explains 'You wrap the Christmas lights with some electrical tape (only to areas that are meant to be hung, don’t tape the entirety) and glue it to your wall. It lasts really well if you use a thicker amount of glue. It lays well, and it dries up transparent so it’s not ruining your decor.'

However, it's not a perfect method. Myles Robinson warns that 'Hot glue is one option, but it requires some care. The key here is to use outdoor-rated hot glue, as it’s designed to withstand temperature changes and moisture.' This glue is easy to find - you can get 30 outdoor-rated Gorilla Glue hot glue sticks at Walmart, for example.

However, test a small patch first. It's almost always safe to use hot glue on brick, but there are times when it can damage the wall underneath. Myles suggests 'When it’s time to remove the lights, gently peel the glue off. It should come off cleanly without leaving marks, though it’s always a good idea to test it on a small unnoticeable area first.'

3. Mounting tape

If you don't want to use brick clips, and you don't have a hot glue gun, you can also use outdoor mounting tape. Renovation expert Carr Lanphier says 'I usually say outdoor mounting tape is the best way to secure your Christmas lights to a brick exterior. In my experience people who aren’t generally crafty or DIY-prone might not have easy access to a hot glue gun, which is usually what you see recommended. In these cases, it might not make sense to run out and buy one, either.'

The method is simple. Myles Robison explains 'Choose a heavy-duty, weather-resistant version that’s made for outdoor use. Apply the tape to the brick surface, press it firmly, and then attach your lights to the tape.' It's that simple, and weather-resistant mounting tape is easy to find at Lowe's or Amazon.

However, just as with hot glue, there are a couple of drawbacks. Carr says 'The one thing I’ll note is that you will likely have to use some rubbing alcohol to dissolve the adhesive after the tape is removed, and I wouldn’t use it on painted surfaces to avoid the adhesive lifting up your paint.' It doesn't always work for heavier string lights with glass bulbs, or for the wettest parts of the country. Myles Robinson says 'Keep in mind that mounting tape works best for lighter decorations and might not hold up well in extreme cold or wet conditions.'

4. Adhesive hooks

For a simple, quick solution, you can use adhesive hooks. These hooks stick straight onto brick or vinyl siding for easy installation.

Myles Robinson suggests that 'If none of these methods suit your needs, you can also try adhesive hooks designed for outdoor use. These hooks come with strong, weatherproof adhesive backings that stick to brick or other textured surfaces.'

You can find lots of exterior adhesive hooks on Amazon. However, you need to do a fair amount of research. Myles warns 'Just make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying and removing the hooks to avoid any residue or damage. The method you choose will depend on the type of lights, the condition of your brickwork, and how long you plan to keep the lights up. As long as you pick the most suitable one, they will stay in place through the festivities.'

5. Drilling fixtures

The final and most drastic solution is to mount your lights in hooks drilled straight into the brick. If you know that you'll put your Christmas lights up every year, this can be a permanent solution.

You need to work out where you need your hooks and mark every spot. Then, using the hammer function on your drill, drill holes in the brickwork. Then add a brick wall anchor and screw in your hooks. This will make permanent, hard-wearing support for your string lights.

However, it's a lot more work than any of the above methods, and when you aren't using the lights, you just have random hooks in your walls. Steve Mena warns 'You can drill your walls to mount your lights, but that’ll chip the brick and leave holes once you take down Christmas lights and decor after the holidays. If you’re sensitive to holes and chipped bricks, you’ll be spending a lot on repair, and even if it’s not a lot, you’re adding cost to home repair.'

Brick walls aren't the only place where Christmas lights can be tricky. I've also spoken to professional landscapers about the best ways to hang Christmas lights in trees, bushes, and shrubs. Just make sure you follow the fifty-per-foot rule so that you have enough lightbulbs to fill up and illuminate the space.

A freshly painted wall is one of life's great joys – but what if yours is bubbling?

Not only will this ruin the new look of your home, it could also be an indication of underlying issues, such as excess moisture or dirty surfaces.

Here, our painting and decorating experts explain how to fix paint bubbling on walls, so you can master how to paint a wall like a pro.

Why is my wall paint bubbling?

Gurleen Kaur, professional painter, decorator and owner of Gurleen Painting, explains, 'When paint loses its adhesion to the surface underneath it, it can result in the formation of visible paint blisters.'

Still, you might be wondering why paint would bubble on the wall in the first place. There's a host of reasons you might need to consider when painting a room:

1. It's improperly applied

One of the most obvious reasons why your wall paint might be bubbling is also one of the easiest to avoid: it's improperly applied to begin with.

Andre Kazimierski, CEO of Improovy Painters of North Shore, explains, 'The most common reason in my experience is just paint that hasn't been properly applied. Whether it's a rushed job and you didn't allow your primer or first coat of paint to set correctly, you skipped the primer altogether, or if you didn't allow your surface to dry completely after cleaning it – if you're seeing bubbling paint, it's likely to do with user error.'

So, to prepare walls for painting, sand your walls, patch up any holes, and ensure you prime adequately with a high-quality primer, such as the Rust-Oleum ZINSSER Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Stain Blocking Primer/Sealer available at Amazon.

Failing to do so 'can create a bumpy base upon which the paint will be applied, and thus develop bubbles, especially if the wall has cracks or small loose particles,' says professional painter, Kaur.

It's also important, says Austin Skogg, owner of Sky Side Exteriors, to peel old paint off the wall completely before painting over it. He warns, 'I remember working on a house where old, peeling paint wasn't completely scraped off. When we put on new paint, it trapped air and moisture underneath, causing those annoying bubbles.'

2. The weather is unsuitable for painting

Something that can have a huge effect on how paint looks and dries is the weather, says contractor Skoog. But can you paint a house in humidity?

'Painting in extreme temperatures or high humidity can also cause bubbling,' he advises. 'I had a job where the weather was super humid, and without proper ventilation, the paint bubbled up badly.'

To avoid this, you can check the humidity of your home with a hygrometer, such as the Govee Indoor Hygrometer Thermometer available at Amazon and watch the temperature, too, before getting started.

The ideal humidity for painting your property is between 40% and 50%, and any higher could cause adverse effects. Note that a humidity of 70% is the maximum for most paints, and temperature-wise, professional painter Kaur advises that it's best to use the paint at temperatures ranging between fifty and eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit.

'For temperature-sensitive paints, Behr Premium Plus Ultra (available at Home Depot) is a solid choice,' recommends Skoog.

To keep a healthy home with good humidity levels, the average day-to-day should be a maximum of 50-60%. You can reduce your home's humidity even without a dehumidifier in multiple ways.

3. The walls aren't clean

If you're repainting and want to avoid bubbling paint, it's important to know how to clean walls before painting, says professional painter Kaur.

'Some of the contaminants like grease, dust or residue could hinder paint from adhering to the surfaces well by causing bubbles whenever the surfaces have not been well cleaned before painting,' he explains.

'Before painting, the wall must be washed and cleaned thoroughly to remove any dust, grease or dirt. Ensure that the surface is completely dry,' before getting started.

Use warm water and dish soap, such as Dawn from Walmart, to clean walls, and ensure you don't use too much water, which may cause further moisture issues.

4. Moisture issues and water damage

Paint expert Kazimierski explains, 'Wall paint bubbling can also be a sign of potential water damage or common household leaks within your walls though, so it is definitely something to get curious about when you see it.'

This is because the moisture will cause bubbles as it tried to escape, which is also why you should always ensure your surface is thoroughly dry before beginning painting.

It might also be a good idea to use your best dehumidifier in the room you intend to paint for at least a day or two before, particularly if you're painting any kitchen ideas or bathroom ideas, which tend to be the areas of the house with the most moisture.

If you have noticed moisture in a wall or ceiling, search for exterior leaks as prolonged ones can increase the risk of mold.

5. Low quality materials

As contractor Skogg explains, 'Sometimes the paint or siding just isn’t up to snuff. I once used a budget paint brand, and it didn’t perform well – bubbles everywhere. Switching to a more reputable brand solved the issue.

'Invest in quality paint and siding. Benjamin Moore Regal Select available at Benjamin Moore is one of my favorites for a smooth, lasting finish.'

6. Incompatible paints

Finally, incompatible paints may be the reason why your paint is bubbling, says professional painter Kaur.

He explains, 'Applying one coating system over another that has been painted with a different type of paint, particularly by using an oil-based paint finish over a water-based one without preparing the surface prior.'

To avoid this, apply compatible paints in thin, even coats,' he advises.

How to fix paint bubbles

If it's too late, and your paint has already bubbled, looking uneven and unsightly, there are reliable ways to fix it.

1. Identify the cause

First things first, you will need to identify the cause of the problem.

Professional painter Kaur advises, 'First, treat the real problem, which is either high humidity or inadequate surface preparation.'

Look for signs such as damp spots or condensation inside windows which will indicate humidity, or a bumpy, uneven paint job.

2. Remove the bubbles

Next, it's time to remove those pesky bubbles. Contractor Skoog says, 'Scrape off the bubbles carefully. A good scraper, like the Hyde 09170 Dust-Free Vacuum Sander available at Amazon, makes this a lot easier.'

In a pinch, Kaur also recommends using a putty knife for this step.

3. Sand and clean

Contractor Skoog advises, 'After you’ve removed the bubbles, sand the area smooth and clean it up. The DEWALT DWE6423K sander (available at Amazon) is fantastic for this job,' and is useful to get rid of textured walls, too.

4. Prime and repaint

Then, it's time for the fun part – and the most important. Contractor Skoog advises, 'Apply a good primer to help with adhesion. KILZ 3 Premium Primer available at Amazon is my go-to for this.'

Of course, wait for the primer to dry thoroughly before applying your paint to ensure a smooth application. Stick to high quality paints, like beautiful Benjamin Moore paint colors, or the most popular Farrow & Ball paint colors – it's much better to spend more and get a result you're truly happy with then have to spend the money on repainting later down the line.

Finally, all that's left to do is to keep an eye on your work. 'Catching small issues early can prevent bigger problems down the line,' adds Skoog.

Anyone who knows me knows two things: I have the nose of a hound, and I love Christmas with a passion. That’s why my natural Christmas tree is as massive as my living room can take, and why my tree smelling foul this year from the off sent me into a tailspin.

Despite picking the tree ourselves and having it freshly cut from a brilliant Christmas tree farm last weekend, when we got it home, as we set it up in the stand, we noticed a terrible, putrid smell. I thought we might have to get rid of it, until I tried a homemade vinegar deodorizing spray.

The great news is this tip I learned from professional cleaners worked a treat, clearing the smell in less than 24 hours when I was wondering why my Christmas tree smelled bad. I was so glad to be able to salvage this beautiful festive fir.

The problem

We were putting our heavy 7 ft tree into our iron tree stand when my daughter, the shortest of the lot of us, noticed a horrible smell. I initially thought she was referring to that pine smell freshly cut trees have but soon after, I caught a whiff of it myself.

I can only be described as putrid decay meets strong ammonia smell. At first I thought it was because of the heavy rain still on its pines and branches, and the mud around its base.

Thom Rutter, our Garden content editor, says, ‘While you might hope that your real Christmas tree will fill living rooms or kitchens with the scent of fresh pine, sometimes this is not the reality. Occasionally, real trees can emit a sour, putrid smell, more noticeable when the tree is brought indoors.

‘There can be any number of reasons for this, not least that the tree has been cut down, so has begun to decompose. However, more often than not, it might be that a wild animal, fox or otherwise, could have marked its territory at the base of the tree before you brought it home.’

I think unfortunately, the latter was our problem. After we opened up the netting, let the branches spread out and put my dehumidifier on to dry it out, I noticed lots of flying bugs going up to our ceiling.

I hoovered them up and sprayed the tree with Raid Multi-insect killer spray available on Amazon. It stopped the bugs immediately. But then I noticed my husband using a different, incorrect home protectant spray for fleas on the other side which has a super strong smell of its own. The mix of the putrid tree smell and that pungent flea spray was nothing short of unbearable so we opened all the windows, despite freezing temperatures, wind and rain outside.

We proceeded to decorate the tree but later, as the smell wafted towards me on the sofa a good 10 ft away, I remembered a two-ingredient DIY cleaning mix professional cleaner Karina Toner, operation manager at Spekless had shared with me this year and reckoned it was worth a go.

How I fixed my smelly Christmas tree with a DIY vinegar spray

I mixed up a 50/50 spray of cleaning vinegar and water in a spare amber spray glass, available from Amazon, which I keep handy for my DIY cleaning solutions and spritzed it on the worst smelling part of the tree.

Thom agrees this is a smart course of action, adding, ‘Your best bet is to clean the needles, which can easily be done with a vinegar-based solution. Simply mix a weak solution of vinegar and lukewarm water, and gently wipe the pine needles, refreshing the solution as you need to. Be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands.'

Latex free gloves, available at Walmart, are handy to keep around the house as more people than ever are allergic to traditional latex washing up gloves.

There was a smell of vinegar in the air for about 10-20 minutes while the areas I’d sprayed on the tree dried but once it had, the putrid smell had reduced by a whopping 80 per cent, and all vinegar notes were gone, making this a brilliant natural deodorizer. That was in the early evening. Before we went to bed, I sprayed my vinegar cleaning mix all over the tree, concentrating extra bursts under the lower areas as I reckon a wild animal had indeed probably marked it and we hadn’t realized before bringing it home.

The next morning, the smell was not noticeable unless I was standing right in front of the tree. I sprayed it again in the morning and by lunchtime the smell was completely gone.

The best thing, apart from the smell lifting, is that vinegar mixes like mine won’t harm trees. Thom, co-author of Lonely Planet The Tree Atlas, available on Amazon, explains, ‘Vinegar-based mixes are often used by gardeners as a natural remedy to kill weeds or treat pest infestations in the garden. This natural solution will do no harm to the Christmas tree and hopefully will help to remove any foul smells.'

My verdict

I gathered suggestions from experienced gardening professionals to showcase five alternative and DIY cloche ideas. They can all be put together quickly and simply and will not cost an arm and a leg.

1. Plastic bottles

Recycled plastic bottles can make a great alternative to traditional cloches and offer a fantastic way to reuse this common household staple. Plastic bottle cloches are very simple to make and use and they offer several benefits, including extending the growing season and protecting plants from frost and pests.

Andrew Porwol, a seasoned landscape expert and founder of Sapcote Garden Centre, recommends large plastic soda or milk jugs as fantastic materials to recycle into a temporary DIY cloche.

‘Cut off the bottom of the bottle and set it over the plant, leaving the lid open for air,’ he says. ‘The translucent material retains heat while allowing light through, resulting in a tiny greenhouse effect.’

Rachel Bull, Head of Gardens at H&G, has used recycled plastic bottles in this way and hails their ability to protect young plants in a small vegetable garden. She says: ‘When we had an allotment I cut large lemonade bottles in half and I used these to cover really tiny carrot and beet seedlings - it definitely worked to protect them from being eaten.’

Providing adequate ventilation and ensuring it is well-anchored are both very important when using plastic bottles. While plastic bottles can make successful DIY cloches, they should only be used as a short-term solution.

2. Glass panes

Before we get to using glass panes, it should be noted that large glass jars can be used to protect small plants as a DIY cloche. They will provide insulation to plants, but can cause overheating on bright days so need to be removed for ventilation.

If you want something larger than a jar, then look no further than an old pane of glass. Any old glass leftover from housing renovations, or removing an old shed or greenhouse, can be used to build a larger cloche around plants - think of it like a DIY cold frame. This solid structure can protect plants from cold weather and remain in place throughout the winter months.

Thom Rutter, former professional gardener and content editor at H&G, says old panes of glass make a ‘simple but effective’ DIY cloche and recalls using them as a cloche alternative.

‘In its most simple form, use two panes of square or rectangular glass to create a tent-like shape, leaning inwards against one another,’ advises Thom. ‘I have previously done this when working as a gardener in London, using insulation tubing, available from Amazon, along the top of the glass to prevent the glass panes from rubbing against each other, which could cause them to shatter in strong winds.

‘Be sure to also cover the ends of your cloche, either with glass or transparent plastic sheeting. While not the prettiest creation, this will certainly do what you need and keep your plants warm on those frosty days.’

3. DIY domes

Again, these hoops can be made of any old wire or plastic you have, the only consideration is that they need to be sturdy to stay upright and not bend. I have previously made hoops for vegetable gardens out of MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) water pipes.

Any material used to cover the dome has to be securely anchored to the ground to prevent it from blowing away in strong winds. Heavy-duty landscape staples, available at Amazon, are a great option to firmly secure the material in place.

4. Plastic sheets

Any old plastic sheets can be used on their own to cover plants from frost. Plastic is a tough and cheap material that can protect plants from the worst of the winter weather and, provided it is clear, allows light to reach plants - similar to growing in a polytunnel. It is thought that plastic can keep plants ten degrees warmer than the outside air temperature.

Plastic sheets can be laid over full rows of plants, ideally laid over hoops as mentioned above rather than sitting directly on the plants. Alternatively, a DIY structure can be built to cover individual plants with plastic.

‘It is best to use three stakes around the plant and lean them to the center like a teepee before draping the plastic over the plant,’ says Scott Seargeant, an experienced landscaper and arborist.

‘Use bungee cords to keep plastic from coming undone. Be sure to remove the plastic during days when the temperature exceeds freezing or risk plants getting too hot.’

5. Fleece

I’ve had my kitchen knives since 2012 but recently, they wouldn’t even cut into tomatoes. I started looking online for a new set, until I remembered Bobby Berk using a magnetic rolling knife sharpener.

I decided to give one a go as it would be at least 50 percent cheaper to sharpen, rather than replace my knives.

The great news is, the $20 magnetic rolling knife sharpener from Amazon not only brought my knives back to life, it's so easy to use and now my favorite kitchen purchase of the year.

Why I'd put off sharpening knives before this

I grew up in a Persian household and our delicious Middle Eastern cuisine is very meat-heavy. We'd buy meat whole, on the bone, and carve up ourselves to remove all fat before batch cooking.

Before every session, my dad would use a long stainless steel rod sharpener, available on Amazon, which happens to be Gordon Ramsay's preferred sharpening method, and go back and forth on the knives. He’d easily spend 15 minutes sharpening the knives we need for our meat prepping.

Mine has four magnetic sides with varying angles. You simply and carefully pop your knife, blade up, on the magnetic edge, then roll the cylindrical sharpener back and forwards. Start with the low grit, and then switch to the higher grit afterwards for refining the newly sharpened edge of your knife.

I learned in the instruction booklet that most knives are made in factories that use either a 20° or 15° angle. Using the wrong one might damage yours so if you can track down the information online for your particular set, align with that. Knowing this now, I would have gone for a simple two-sided magnetic rolling sharpener like this from Amazon instead.

Nonetheless, it only took me a minute or two per knife to restore its sharpness. I opted for the 20° because my knife is the Jamie Oliver Tefal Paring one available as a duo on Amazon, and Tefal's own knife care blog says to sharpen at 20°.

My verdict

My magnetic roller is very easy and small to store, doesn’t require electricity or anything really, including much elbow grease. That works well for me as I am in chronic pain with a connective tissue disorder and do not have much hand or wrist strength.

The form and function of the rolling knife sharpener I bought on Amazon is brilliantly fit for purpose. Rolling designs are based on the original and more pricey Horl rolling knife sharpener, which came to market in 1993.

I didn't have the big budget to splash on the original Horl, or the popular Tumbler sharpener used by Berk but I am OK with that.

I saved myself between $50 and $100 dollars by sharpening, not replacing my knives and would highly recommend this for anyone who hasn’t sharpened knives themselves before.

What to shop

Space was always going to be tight in my apartment. I live in an expensive city, where money doesn't go far, but I was so grateful to be able to buy my tiny home, that I was willing to make the small proportions work.

The open plan living room and kitchen doesn't feel crowded but the tiny bedroom was a whole other story. It didn't have the space to handle any bulky furniture beyond my bed and dresser leaving me without a closet.

That's why I thought a bespoke built-in closet in the corner alcove would be perfect, until I heard the eye-watering costs. Instead, I used a few bits from IKEA to carry out a weekend DIY project that tripled my bedroom storage and cost just a tenth of the price I was quoted for a built-in version.

How I added extra storage to my tiny bedroom with this easy DIY

While I was looking over the many eye-wateringly expensive quotes I received for a really small built-in closet, I had a very handy epiphany, and it all came together in my mind, what I was going to do instead, right down to the last detail.

Even as I explained it excitedly to my partner he couldn't really see the vision. But with a whole load of clothes currently living on the couch, I thought my small closet idea was worth a try.

And five years later, I still love the DIY closet I created and haven't felt the need to switch to a built-in either.

With just five products (mostly from IKEA) I made use of every inch of that alcove space and tripled the bedroom storage I would have had with a small freestanding closet, or the visual clutter of open storage.

What you'll need

• All from The Home Depot
• Spirit level
• Two round wooden dowels: the thicker the better
• Tape measure
• Step ladder
• Two-closet rod sockets
• A drill
• Storage boxes (optional). I like this lidded storage bin which comes in four matte colors
• Chest drawers (optional)
• Heavy curtain (optional)

1. Measure up your space and plan how you use it

The first thing I did for this project is measure up the dimensions of the alcove. This meant I could find the right length dowel for the hanging rail and the curtain rail. But it also meant I could find the right storage pieces to sit at the bottom of the closet. I was so pleased to find that two of the IKEA RAST drawers fit snuggly within the dimensions. And on top of those, three of the DRÖNA boxes.

I would say at this point, while you are measuring up, think about how you want to use the space. Drawers made sense for me as I had limited drawer space elsewhere, but you could add just boxes or leave the space empty for storing bulky items like suitcases or shoes, or longer clothes such as dresses or items clothing bags.

2. Plan the height you want your hanging rail

Then, based on what you want to hang, and what setup you want at the base of your closet, decide on the height of your hanging rail.

If you hang lots of dresses or longer pieces, you want this to be high enough for them to hang nicely without getting creased at the bottom. And make sure the height is at a comfortable one for you to be able to reach up easily and pick out your outfits.

If you weren't hanging too much in your closet, you could even use a tension rod – it would be one of the alternative ways to use a tension rod around your home.

3. Mount the hanging rail

Once I had decided on the right height for my space, adding in the hanging rail was the first 'element' I added to the alcove. I checked the measurements of the width of the alcove again, and cut the wooden dowel down to length.

It was a two-person job to ensure it was straight using a spirit level, so I'd recommend a digital laser level if you like doing doing. You can check the straightness without any doubt or help.

I then clearly marked on each side of the alcove where the dowel would need to be secured to the wall. I then drilled each bracket into the wall at the point I had marked – go for half-enclosed brackets, it makes the job far easier.

Lastly, I placed the dowel into the brackets and again used a spirit level to check it was straight.

4. Mount the curtain rail

If you are someone who has an aesthetically pleasing space already packed with closet organisation ideas, you could skip this step and leave your closet open. But I am no such person, so something to cover my closet was a must and a simple, white curtain seemed like the most obvious answer.

For this step, it's very similar to hanging the clothing rail, however, be sure to hang this dowel a few inches from your ceiling. And when adding in the brackets do make sure you have enough room to be able to lift the dowel in and out of place, so you can get it in initially but also so you can easily remove your curtains to wash or switch them out.

5. Add in your extra storage

Before you start hanging clothes, add in any of the extra closet storage ideas you want at the bottom of the closet. Give the empty alcove a quick vacuum first to ensure it's clean and you've got rid of any dust from drilling in the brackets. If you've never used a Damp Duster, available on Amazon, before you're missing out on much easier cleaner.

6. Hang the curtains

The final step is to hang the curtains. I went with something simple and white. Measure your curtains to check they will hang nicely all the way to the floor of your alcove and go for a heavy fabric. These will be like your closet doors so you want them to be thick and strong enough so clothes and hangers aren't always poking through.

I made the mistake of first ordering some gorgeous gauzy ones, which totally weren't up for the job.

Retracing my steps to write about this closet DIY, I have been reminded of not only how easy it was to execute, but how effective it's been. Over the years I have changed out the kind of storage, switched the curtains a few times and I have no plans to change it for a built-in option any time soon.

DIY dehumidifiers

1. Charcoal

Wondering how to use activated charcoal in your home? Josh Mitchell, HVAC technician and owner of AirConditionerLab, suggests using it as a DIY dehumidifier, as an alternative to your best dehumidifer.

He says, 'Activated charcoal absorbs moisture and odors, making it ideal for damp spaces. It's also inexpensive and readily available. Choose activated charcoal, as this type is best because its porous surface absorbs moisture effectively.'

Then, using a breathable container, such as a mesh bag, coffee filter, old sock, or plastic container with holes punched in the lid, place the charcoal container in areas with excess moisture. This might be in closets, or any basement ideas and bathroom ideas.

'Swap out the charcoal every two to four weeks, depending on the humidity level,' recommends Mitchell. 'When the charcoal stops absorbing moisture, it's time for a replacement.

2. Silica gel

As a brilliant way to keep moisture out of a pantry, silica gel, such as the Dry & Dry Premium Silica Gel Packets available at Amazon, make an effective alternative to dehumidifers, says HVAC expert Mitchell.

'Silica gel absorbs moisture and doesn't create messes like other methods,' he explains. 'It's also compact, and reusable, making it cost-effective for long-term use.'

To use silica gel, you can either save packets from product packaging, or buy silica gel in bulk. Then, using a breathable fabric pouch, such as the Tatuo 3 x 4 Inches Muslin Bags Cotton Drawstring Bags available at Amazon, small mesh bag, or open container, place silica gel packs in moisture-prone spaces.

'These might be closets, drawers, or storage bins,' adds Mitchell. 'For larger areas, use bulk silica gel in containers. When the gel becomes saturated (often indicated by a color change if it's a color-indicating type), dry it out in an oven at 200°F for one to two hours to restore its moisture-absorbing properties.'

You can also use silica gel to dry flowers, to preserve beautiful blooms. However, wherever you place yours, keep out of the reach of children and pets as they are not to be ingested.

3. Rock salt

You can make a DIY dehumidifier using rock salt, says Steve Pacholski, brand president of Varsity Zone HVAC, who uses this cheap salt trick to get rid of condensation.

'Rock salt is a great option for larger spaces,' he suggests. 'Just grab a container like a bowl or bucket, fill it with rock salt (such as the Mutual Industries Rock Salt available at Walmart) and place it in a damp area, such as a basement or bathroom.

'Rock salt naturally pulls moisture from the air, and, over time, will start to clump as it absorbs water. You'll want to check on it regularly and either replace the salt, or dry it out in the oven on a low setting to reuse it.'

You can also use Himalayan salt, such as the Natural Himalayan Salt Chunks available at Walmart, for this, which can then be used to cleanse your home with salt, according to spiritualists.

4. Baking soda

You may know about cleaning with baking soda, or how to use baking soda in laundry, but did you know it makes a great DIY dehumidifier, too?

HVAC expert Mitchell explains, 'Baking soda absorbs moisture and odors, making it ideal for smaller spaces with mild humidity issues. It's inexpensive, easy to find, and doubles as an air freshener,' to make your home smell nice.

To use baking soda, such as the Great Value Baking Soda available at Walmart, use a shallow, open containers such as a bowl, tray or baking dish, and pour a thin layer (about one to two cups) into the container, says Mitchell. Alternatively, if using this baking soda hack for closets, to banish odors and damp, you can just simply pop an open box in, which will also help to prevent damp and mold in a bedroom, too.

'The container should be placed in closets, bathrooms, or other small places where moisture is a problem,' adds Mitchell. 'Stir the baking soda every few days to keep it practical. Replace it entirely when it becomes clumpy, typically every one to two weeks.'

'As a former professional gardener, I would often over-sow, using far more seed than was necessary. After germination, this often means thinning the seedlings and throwing some of them on the compost heap,' Thom adds. 'Instead, by using seed tape, gardeners can know exactly how many seeds they are sowing per row, which means accurate growing and less waste.'

In this sense, seed tape is not only an essential gardening tool but also a way to incorporate zero waste gardening in your yard. You can take it one step further by choosing to make your own DIY seed tape. Here's how to do it:

5 steps to make DIY seed tape

You can use your DIY seed tape for sowing seeds indoors or sowing seeds outdoors. It's a fun weekend project and takes just minutes to complete. You will need:

• Cornstarch
• Water
• Biodegradable paper
• Ruler
• Pencil

1. Create a cornstarch paste

There are a few different things you can use to create the adhesive substance for your seed tape, but cornstarch paste is one of the most reliable. Plus, you likely already have some in your kitchen cupboard.

You can make cornstarch paste by combining one tablespoon of cornstarch (available at Walmart) with one cup of water. Boil the mixture until you achieve a gel-like consistency.

And it's as simple as that. Before using this adhesive, you need to let it cool down. Leave it to the side while you prepare your paper.

2. Mark spacings on your biodegradable paper

It doesn't matter what kind of biodegradable material you use for your tape, but the important thing is it needs to be able to break down in the soil.

Some options include toilet paper and cotton paper (from Amazon). A good test to know if you can use your chosen material is researching whether it can be used to make compost.

Cut your paper into long strips, with the width at least two-and-a-half the size of the seeds you wish to plant.

Grab your ruler, like this one from Walmart, and mark even spaces on the paper using a pencil. Your marking should be towards the bottom edge of the paper, indicating where your adhesive paste will go.

The space you leave between markings should reflect the growing requirements for the specific seeds you are sowing.

3. Dab the paste on your paper

Next, you can apply your cornstarch paste to your seed tape paper. Make sure your paste has cooled down before doing this.

There are a few ways to do this, you might opt to use a paintbrush (from Amazon) or a kitchen spoon. However you do, make sure to dab a moderate amount of paste that will be large enough to hold your seeds.

4. Press seeds onto the tape

With your dollops of cornstarch paste in place, you can press your seeds in place. The paste should act like an adhesive, holding the seeds in place for planting.

This can be a fiddly task, especially if you're working with small seeds. Try using these craft tweezers from Amazon to carefully place your seeds. 5. Position the tape on your soil

The final step of making DIY seed tape is using it. Place it on top of the soil where you want your plants to grow and cover the tape.

To germinate your seeds, don't forget to water the soil well. Over time, the tape will break down and decompose, while the seeds germinate and sprout into seedlings.

2. Replace outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting takes some bashing through the year, but it’s never as important to have an illuminated garden, driveway and path as it is in winter.

5. Draft-proof the entryways and windows

Moving inside the house, check for drafts around your front door. One of the best investments I ever made in our older house was tobuy rubber weatherstrip tape, available at Lowe's.

It sits inside the frame of the door or window and adheres with a simple sticky tape. It’s not a permanent fix and will need to be replaced every year or so. Alternatives can include a indoor draft stopper such as the Lakeside Collection underdoor seal from Target) that can be moved around depending on which part of the home is in use.

6. Clean the fireplace

Sweeping the inside of a chimney is a job that can be inconvenient at the best of times – it is messy and takes some specialist tools and little know-how – so many outsource this to a professional.

However, cleaning the fireplace surroundings is a quick task to do before hanging stockings or lighting the fire. Remove debris and sweep away ash from the grate and firebox before using a damp cloth to clean any glass, the mantel and the hearth.

This might be the perfect time to arrange kindling, logs and equipment. If you have young kids or pets visiting, a movable fender or guard gate, such as the three-panel black mesh fire guard from Amazon, will prove a helpful safety measure.

7. Touch up any damaged paintwork

We get so used to seeing small imperfections around our home, so this point of the year is a really good time to take stock of any walls that need paintwork touching up.

Make sure to pop a bucket and towel underneath where you're bleeding the radiator to catch any spills.

9. Fix leaky faucets

Consider your house an old, comforting friend. Sometimes, we get so used to our home's quirks that we forget to let new people know what to expect. I can’t tell you how many times I have had visitors at my house and only when the faucet is drip, drip, dripping away do I realize I forgot to tell them to twist it in the perfect way, or not to use it at all.

Learning how to fix a leaky faucet can be as easy as using a wrench to tighten the washer or O ring and should certainly be on your pre-Christmas DIY list. It's a quick fix and an essential DIY skill every homeowner should know.

10. Prepare your kitchen

There are a few key areas you will need to focus on when preparing your kitchen for guests.

Remember, any good guest will want to help out during the busy Christmas period by cooking, washing up or tidying things out of the way from countertops in the kitchen. Make life a bit easier for you both by making it clear where different items go by organizing under your sink, and inside cabinets and drawers.

Here, I spoke to HVAC and paint pros to find out more about this affordable alternative to keeping your house warm without turning up the heat and to determine whether it's a worthwhile expense or simply an ineffective invention.

What is insulation paint?

Doing what it says on the tin – insulation paint is used on walls to create a thermal barrier and reduce heat loss in the home.

George Crew, principal painting contractor at Chicago Paint Crew, with over 30 years in the industry, explains, 'Insulation paint, often referred to as thermal paint, is a specialized coating aimed at enhancing a building's thermal properties.

'It features tiny ceramic or glass beads that form a thin, heat-resistant barrier, which helps to minimize heat transfer through surfaces. Marketed as a user-friendly solution for boosting energy efficiency, it can be applied to both interior and exterior walls to help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce heating or cooling expenses,' helping you to save money at home.

It is also a cheaper alternative to other insulation types, such as glass wool insulation, and can easily be done yourself, so long as you know how to paint a wall.

Does insulation paint work?

But, most importantly, does insulation paint actually work?

Andy Shu, HVAC specialist at ZapFixers, advises, 'Insulation paint can help improve energy efficiency, but its performance depends on the application, environment, and the paint's formulation. It is most effective when used in conjunction with proper insulation, as it's not a replacement for traditional insulating materials, like foam or fiberglass.

'Its ability to reduce heat transfer can be limited compared to these alternatives.'

That being said, while it won't necessarily hugely cut energy bills, Shu notes that the reflective properties of the paint can bounce radiant heat away, particularly in hot climates. Therefore, it's useful for adding a small, additional thermal barrier on surfaces already insulated, as an additional type of attic insulation, for example.

Where to use insulation paint

When it comes to where to use insulation paint ideas, keep in mind that it will be most efficient in particularly sunny spots. For example, in attics, the paint can help to reduce heat transfer through roofs in hot climates, while in sunroom ideas, it will reflect excess heat, particularly on south or west-facing walls.

If you're considering insulation options for significant impact, Colin Matei, owner of Clean Air Heating & Cooling, recommends exploring traditional methods, like installing fiberglass or cellulose in walls and attics.

'These provide a more comprehensive thermal barrier, especially in climates with extreme temperatures,' he says. 'In our services, I've seen better results with these systems in diverse spaces like basements and living rooms,' particularly if you know which areas of your home you should always insulate, for maximum impact.
