Rich brown tones have been the neutral of the season, the neutral of the year even, but alongside the classic chocolates, designers are turning to a smokier, more sophisticated shade that adds all the comfort of brown but is elegant and elevated.

Inspired by the natural hue of dried tobacco leaves, tobacco brown is a timeless brown paint with tons of complexity. It's the perfect fall color, with a dusty, almost faded quality that makes it rich without feeling overly saturated.

'Tobacco brown has an inherent warmth that feels especially appealing in autumn,' says interior designer CeCe Barfield Thompson. 'It reminds me of polished wood, leather-bound books, antique furniture, and all the beautiful natural colors we associate with the season. There’s something wonderfully comforting about it.'

'What I love most, though, is that it feels timeless rather than seasonal. It can be rich and dramatic, but also incredibly restful. As the days grow shorter and we begin spending more time indoors, I think we’re naturally drawn to rooms that feel intimate, layered, and welcoming. Tobacco brown creates that atmosphere beautifully, particularly in the evening when the lamps are lit, and the room takes on an almost jewel-box quality.'

Reminiscent of fallen leaves, tobacco brown evokes a wintry warmth that's so fitting for this time of year. 'I just read Emily Dickinson's poem, Autumn, where she writes that 'the morns are meeker than they were, the nuts are getting brown; The berry's cheek is plumper, the rose is out of town'. Similar to her autumnal references, I think the tone of tobacco brown conveys the essence of the changing seasons, from summer to fall,' says Stephanie Luk, Creative Director for Electric Bowery.

'We wanted the sitting room's color palette to be distinct from the rest of the house – darker, moodier, warmer, and centered around the fireplace. Since the space is usually used at night, we incorporated a deep, warm, and earthy brown color palette in luxurious fabrics to set the tone of the room.'

'With any color palette, you can either contrast or complement,' Stephanie adds. 'If the goal is balance, I usually pair dark browns with complementary colors like warm umbers, siennas, rich reds, and plums. When pairing similar colors and tones, it's always a good idea to play with different textures, patterns and finishes – whether it's the grain texture in wood, the sheen on a velvet fabric, or a glossy paint.'

While dark brown paint cocoons small rooms, it also shifts beautifully in daylight. 'This south-facing room gets lots and lots of sunlight during the day, and I’d always thought that if anywhere could support a dark wall, it was here,' says interior designer Brandon Schubert on the living room pictured above. 'As soon as I saw the chocolate brown linen, which was the perfect shade of brown (not too purple, not too pale, just the color of rich milk chocolate), I knew I had my walls sorted.'

'It is a cozy color,' Brandon says. 'When you are sitting in a brown room, especially in the evening by lamplight, or with candles burning and a fire going, the light just hits the wall and stops spreading. It brings everything inward. It also feels incredibly contemplative and calm during the day. Shadows and reflections lose their contrast. Everything feels gentler.'

'The key is not to make the room feel too dark. So when thinking about the flooring, I opted for a pale oak,' Brandon adds. 'When thinking about the rug, I chose a creamy ground. The strong colors in the room are deep red, yellow and blue, but they are merely accents. Pops of color to keep the room from feeling drab and boring.'

'I’d also avoid anything too bright white against a brown wall. So for the cornice and skirting in this room I chose a lovely milky-tea color from Farrow & Ball called “Cat’s Paw”. The ceiling is off-white, but a shade dingier than elsewhere in the house.'

Brown kitchens have been on trend this whole year, replacing grays and whites with warmth and richness. Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian eras were renowned for using these colors, especially in the below-stairs kitchens,' explains Helen Parker, Creative Director of deVOL Kitchens.

Paired with off-white walls and organic wood countertops, tobacco brown brings a rich depth to the room. 'A soft mink-brown-gray is a wonderfully chic autumnal color to pick for kitchen cupboards; it feels less harsh than regular gray and works well in both contemporary and more period interiors, as it is so easy to combine with rich dark reds and greens or more muted pinks and browns.'

'The room has limited natural light, and rather than fighting that, I wanted to embrace it,' says CeCe about the dining room pictured above. 'We chose a rich tobacco brown to contrast with the windows, making the natural light feel more pronounced. The high-gloss finish reflects light throughout the room, adding depth and luminosity.'

'The space also serves as both a library and dining room, a combination I particularly love for urban living,' CeCe continues. 'The dark palette creates an intimate, enveloping quality that feels equally suited to curling up with a book or hosting a glamorous dinner. I believe the best rooms are both beautiful and truly lived in.'

'For me, it’s all about contrast and layering. Dark brown is a wonderful backdrop for art, antiques, and interesting textiles, but it’s important to introduce elements that catch the light and keep the room from feeling too heavy. In this room, the gilt portrait frame, brass lighting, and polished wood bring warmth and reflection, while the lighter patterned upholstery and pillows provide relief from the richness of the walls.'

'I particularly loved pairing tobacco brown with soft pinks, lavender, cream, and touches of burgundy inspired by Pierre Frey’s Madame Elisabeth fabric. The combination feels sophisticated and interesting. I also like mixing finishes – glossy walls with soft velvet, crisp linen, and aged brass. This interplay of color, finish, and texture adds depth, making a dark room feel inviting rather than somber.'

While cozy schemes aren't just for the cozy season, Amber's approach to decorating every room for fall is the ultimate method to make your home feel a little more inviting in the colder months. From layering your home with organic textures to embracing saturated neutral tones, Amber's formula ensures interiors are as comforting as they can be come fall.

'I live in L.A., where it never really gets cold, so I’m a little addicted to what I call my “fall feeling",' Amber tells Homes & Gardens. 'Any chill in the air is my excuse to pull out the sweaters and light a fire. At home, that feeling comes from layers. I add throws you can actually reach for, pillows in a mix of textures, and a comfortable seat everywhere you look.'

Before layering begins, Amber always starts by pulling inspiration from her surroundings, letting the tones and textures outside guide her decorating decisions. Starting with fall color schemes, Amber nods to the natural shift outside without straying into the stereotypical or 'themed', embracing tones that feel grounding and calming in line with the season. Organic textures like marbles, soft linens, and plush shearling follow suit.

'I always look outside first. Nature guides the palette and the tone, and it does the heavy lifting for me,' she explains. 'In the fall, that means greens of every shade (my forever favorite), deep forest tones with a little olive in them, and hits of rust and saffron. For materials, I want things that feel good to touch: linen, wool, shearling, patinaed leather, plaster walls and natural stone. I also love a washed-out plaid in an earthy tone. It’s a quiet nod to the season, not a costume.'

When asked her go-to materials for this time of year, Amber replied, 'Stone and wood, always. The ruggedness of stone next to the warmth of timeworn wood is one of my favorite pairings. Chosen with intention, they don’t compete with each other; they complete each other. I also love a limestone fireplace against warm-toned plaster walls. For metals, my go-to is unlacquered brass fixtures with antiqued brass hardware, but I’m also happy to mix in polished nickel or oil-rubbed bronze so nothing looks too matchy-matchy. Then there are my constants: reclaimed oak, honed marble, patinated leather, and lots of linen. They’re all materials that wear in, not out.'

The cozy-maxxing trend is all about layering, mixing covetable textures with traditional patterns and curved, cocooning shapes. It's a similar method to Amber's approach, where she combines nostalgic patterns with comforting textures and a splash of artisanal decor.

'Mixing and layering is my ultimate design belief,' Amber explains. 'It’s patterns on patterns on textures on more patterns. What makes it work is keeping the colors and tones in line, so you can go as wild as you want with everything else. My trick is to lay all the fabrics next to and on top of each other, step back, and look at them together. If the tones clash, swap one out and try again. I apply the same idea to objects. Roughhewn wood, a dented vintage metal piece, handmade pottery, and something green on a shelf will give you more depth than any single “statement” piece. It’s the small details that do it: a wooden button on a pillow, the slub of a linen throw.'

Finding common ground through color makes a scheme feel cohesive and harmonious. For fall, Amber relies on organic tones to create harmony within her schemes, layering patterns, fabrics, and decor according to the palettes she creates. 'I’m drawn to earthy, grounded palettes in the fall. That means mossy and forest greens, warm rusts, a little saffron, and creamy warm whites to balance it all out. You don’t need to repaint to bring them in. Let textiles do the work. Stay in the same color story so it all feels connected. Keep the bones of the room timeless, and let the layers be what changes with the season.'

Once the layering is complete, it's time to embrace the details that take a scheme from pretty to personal. From filling vignettes with vintage treasures to introducing warm, soft lighting, the small details tie the look together and create that truly cozy ambiance we crave during fall.

Amber says small styling details are what make the biggest difference when preparing a home for fall. 'Vintage vessels and bowls,' Amber says. 'Fill them with branches or something seasonal, but not literal. Stacked books and one object with a story. This makes a room feel personal, not styled.'

Vintage quilts make all the difference to a bed. They bring an element of story and nostalgia to bedrooms. 'Throws and quilts. Use them generously, and put them where people will actually use them. Bed layers, too. Crisp sheets, a duvet in the same color story, then throws and pillows on top. A bed is the easiest place to make a room feel cozy.'

Looks-maxxing this, protein-maxxing that. Now that fall is upon us, I have a new addition to the chronically online lexicon: cozy-maxxing. Because when this California girl detects sub-50-degree temperatures, it’s throw blankets, throw pillows, and couch time. STAT.

But how cliché! I’m going hard on soft, tactile textures. Bullion fringe hanging from every handle, velvet Pottery Barn picture frames dotting the credenza, and a boatload of bouclé where you'd least expect it. The colorful kind, like Rowena Interiors’ terracotta ottoman, because, as we’ve learned from designers, this formerly 'cheugy' upholstery is having something of a renaissance and colorful bouclé is everywhere.

There’s a point every fall when, as I’m making dinner, I look up at the kitchen window and realize the sun is already setting. I usually notice because, at this time of year, it starts shining directly in my eyes, so it’s hard to miss. It happens right around 6:30 p.m., and it’s a confirmation of a new routine.

During the warmer months, our evenings often happen outside. We make dinner on the grill, eat on the patio, and let the kids play until dark, which conveniently coincides with bedtime. But as the days get shorter and the first real chill sets in, we naturally start moving the end of the day indoors.

As much as I love the coziness of this time of year (last week I wrote all about how I love adding extra layers to my home), I always find it a little melancholy when the days start getting shorter, especially knowing the clocks will soon change, and darkness will arrive even earlier. So instead of fighting it, I try to lean into the best parts of the fall season: warm lighting, music playing, and the kinds of dinners that make staying indoors feel indulgent instead of like a compromise.

Getting there doesn’t take much – just a few small tweaks to the existing routine.

It starts with the lighting. As the sun goes down, I walk through the house, turning on lamps and sconces and lighting a candle or two. I avoid the 'big lights' whenever I can, since they tend to flatten the atmosphere.

Soft layered lighting is the single easiest way to make a house feel warmer and more inviting, which is why I have at least one lamp in almost every room, including the kitchen. Once it’s dark outside, even the fairly mundane task of making dinner feels atmospheric in soft lighting (though I do flick on the under-cabinet lights if I’m chopping or peeling something – safety first).

The next thing I do is turn on music. In the summer, we often have music playing outdoors, too, but it tends to be more upbeat and fast-paced. In the fall and winter, we turn to a more relaxed, background style of music. My husband loves to play jazz or Frank Sinatra, which makes it feel like we’re in some sort of Nancy Meyers movie. My kids actually call all of this music 'Christmas music' because they associate it with the fall and holiday season.

Once the mood is set, I start making dinner, something that also shifts with this time of year. Like most people, I trade out summer staples like grilled chicken and pasta salads for warmer, richer meals that suit the season. Soup is my go-to for fall, and this year, I started with French onion soup. It’s simple, but because it simmers for a while, it fills the house with that unmistakably cozy smell of onions, broth, and herbs.

Instead of serving it with a baguette, I make an easy Dutch oven bread, then slice it, top it with Gruyère, and lightly broil it. If it’s a weekend, I usually add a glass of red wine, and at that point, it’s officially one of my favorite fall meals.

We also start to shift the spaces in our home we use on dark evenings, though this is more of a natural gravitation than a conscious shift. In summer, as I mentioned, we often eat outside or at the table in the breakfast nook. But once the weather turns, we start eating in the dining room again.

We host a lot of holidays there, so I think my family associates it with that time of year. It also feels more enveloping after dark than our breakfast nook – a little moodier, a little more intimate – especially with candles lit and dinner on the table.

The other room we start spending more time in is our living room. My husband likes to call it our 'winter room,' and he’s not wrong. We all prefer the sofa in the family room, so that’s where we tend to spend time when it’s warm. But the living room has the only wood-burning fireplace in the house, which is enough to make us choose it over the more comfortable sofa once it gets cold.

We have a gas fireplace in the family room that we use during the week, but if we have more time, especially on weekends or when friends and family are over, we always prefer a 'real' fire. I love the whole ritual of it: bringing in the wood, getting the fire going, and especially the smoky smell – it’s a smell that I instantly associate with warm childhood memories of holidays and ski trips, and I love that it’s imprinting those same associations for my own kids.

None of this requires much. The lamps were already there, the music takes thirty seconds, and the soup simmers on its own. The house hasn’t changed – the season has just given you a reason to use it differently.

As per the TikTok video below from @jeffandlaurenshow, you can get the look by carving out a pumpkin, adding some drainage holes, and using it as a plant pot. The bigger the pumpkin, the more layered the planting opportunities.

It's a fall DIY that took me just 20 minutes to do and cost less than $5. Ever since styling it by my front door (alongside other beautiful decorative pumpkins, like these from Walmart), my neighbors and guests have stopped to admire it. A Chic Take on the Pumpkin Porch

The pumpkin plant pot trend is so simple – you essentially turn a carving pumpkin (which you can pick up from Walmart) into a vessel for your favorite fall flowers for pots.

Not only does it look good, but it actually supports healthy growth of your plants. Because the pumpkin flesh is moisture-retentive, it acts like a sponge and will help keep your potted plants hydrated. Alongside rainfall this season, you may not need to water your potted plants at all (though it is important to add drainage holes to avoid rot).

Plus, when you're ready to take down the fall decor, you can compost your pumpkins and turn them into organic matter for the garden.

If you want a pumpkin plant pot that lasts a bit more indefinitely, Wayfair have pumpkin planters that achieve the same look.

While a singular pumpkin plant pot with chrysanthemums is charming, the most impressive display is made by adding a few decorative pumpkins of other colors and even planting up multiple pumpkins of different sizes with different plants.

How to Create a Pumpkin Plant Pot

This is one of the quickest and easiest DIYs I've done. You need just a few materials to get started:

• Pumpkins – they need to be large enough to act as a vessel for your chosen plants. Treat it the same as picking out the size of a plant pot, with enough depth and width for your plant's roots and spread.
• Carving tools (like this set from Walmart)
• A drill
• Potting soil (which you can pick up from Lowe's)
• Your favorite fall flowers (I chose red chrysanthemums, which you can find at Walmart)

To make your pumpkin plant pot, prepare a work space. Just like creating other pumpkin carving ideas, things can get messy, so you may want to work on a potting mat (like this beautiful pink and red one from IKEA) and have a bowl nearby for the pulp.

1. Start by carving the pumpkin as if you were making a lid for a Jack-o'-lantern. It's best to cut at a 45-degree angle, as this makes it easier to lift.
2. Scoop out all the pulp and pumpkin seeds. I recommend placing this in a bowl on the side to cook with later on. You want to gently scrape the sides of the pumpkin to get a clean, smooth finish.
3. Drill 1-3 drainage holes in the bottom of the pumpkin. This will allow excess moisture to drain out so your plants aren't sitting in soggy soil, which could cause root rot and kill them off prematurely.
4. Fill the pumpkin with potting soil about halfway. Then, pot up your plants – if you're using multiple, position taller plants at the back and compact ones at the front to create a layered display.
5. Use more potting soil to carefully secure your plants in place and water them.

It really is as simple as that. Add some more decorative pumpkins, corn stalks, and other fall porch decor for a finishing touch.

While burgundies and oxbloods are typical of this time of year, it's not the expected red paints that make this Farrow & Ball palette feel fresh – it's the mix of an almost brown red (Etruscan Red) and a fiery red-meets-orange titled 'Harissa.'

'I deliberately didn’t go for wine colors or oranges this year (they may have cropped up in my 2025 edit) but wanted to look to more ‘grounded’ and moody colors,' explains Patrick. 'Blue is still a big part of autumn and should be present in our considerations, and it’s a false path to decorate for a season; this is more about color shifts and mood than decoration,' Paddy adds. 'I think autumn is a particularly sensory time; clocks change, our food habits change, even the scent of candles shifts from lighter floral notes to tobacco and leather notes, the scent of an old dust jacket or well-worn library chair…'

I love to decorate for Halloween; however, I have never been much of a fan of the overly kitschy look that most spooky season decor gives off. I like to stick with the classics – a collection of real pumpkins and gourds piled up on my porch and dotted along my mantel.

I do encounter the same issue each year, though. While my outside Halloween decor display sees me through from mid-September to Thanksgiving, the pumpkins in the house always start to look a bit sad come October. And I am not about to switch to plastic. Instead, this year, I'm opting for faux variations that look as timeless as real pumpkins but are as long-lasting as plastic ones. It’s the brainchild of designer Drew Michael Scott – a brand and creative platform centered around vintage inspiration, character-rich details, and a charming, old-meets-new aesthetic. And now, it’s coming to West Elm.

This fall, Drew and West Elm have teamed up to unveil a collection of Lone Fox-inspired home decor – from dinnerware and throw pillows to Christmas decorations and cozy bedding. ‘I really wanted to hone in on the ‘Lone Fox’ look, but I still wanted to make it really fun,’ Drew tells Homes & Gardens.

The collection's visual palette is what pulls you in at first glance. It's so warm, so inviting, and so Lone Fox. Shades of green, brown, and maroon are tastefully complemented with metallic tones that give this collection that seasonally elevated flair.

'I tend to use a lot of warm tones, but I like to mix in a fun cool tone every now and then,' Drew tells me. 'We stuck to more moody colors here, but then we also brought in the element of mixed metals like iron and brass to add another layer to the collection's palette.'

'There are lots of little details that went into every single product that really made them stand out,' Drew continues.

What's best about this collection – aside from its inviting nature, its thoughtful design details, and heritage-inspired aesthetic – is that it's not season-specific. Sure, there are stockings, ornaments, and garland strands that will be perfect for Christmas decorating, but it was Drew's intention for the collection to transcend seasonal constraints.

'I really wanted to make a collection that could transition through the fall and the holiday season, but then also be able to live in your home year-round,' he tells me. It helps that the collection has such a grounding palette of earth tones and warm metallic accents. Plus, there's nothing overly holiday-themed either. It's more like a wonderful, winter woodland-inspired aesthetic – which feels so right for this cozy time of year.

Another reason why this collection is so desirable is that it can easily blend with everything you already own. 'I want [the collection] to mix and match with what you have,' Drew continues. While in summer the bedroom becomes a place to try to cool down and get some sleep in the heat, it comes into its own again, decor-wise, come fall. It's time to put back on those layers you stripped off on the hottest days of the year and turn your bedroom back into a cozy, cocooning sanctuary.

Layering your home for fall is the first way to usher in the change of season, and in the bedroom, this can start subtly and gradually, adding throws, pillows, rugs, and furniture to create a warm and welcoming sleep space. 'Long before central heating, interiors relied on layers of textiles to create warmth and protection from the elements,' explains leading curtain-maker and soft furnishings expert Pat Giddens. 'Think bed drapes, fabric hangings, carpets, and heavy textiles to create softer, warmer, and more sheltered environments.'

'Rather than heating an entire space, layers of fabric can help create smaller, cozier environments that feel warm, comforting, and cocooning,' adds Pat, 'while also nurturing that childhood sense of whimsy we all remember from making tents, dens, and hideouts.'

These are the five key layers designers focus on when taking a bedroom out of summer and into fall and winter.

1. Soft, Tactile Lighting

The first layer to consider in your bedroom when making it extra cozy for fall is the lighting. Over the summer, natural light does a lot of the heavy lifting, but shifting into autumn and winter, you want to add soft pools of warm light to the room. And the fixtures you choose matter too – soft, fabric lampshades that will gently disperse the light are always a nice update at this time of year.

'Cozy autumnal interiors are all about depth, softness and atmosphere. I have a penchant for intricate layering, combining warm and tactile materials to craft an inviting and romantic atmosphere,' says interior designer Erik Munro. 'Lighting and layering are paramount. You need a strong base, then many added layers, cleverly lit with indirect, soft lighting. A well-designed interior should evoke a feeling within you – as you enter the room you feel a change right away, or a well-used favorite room unearths old warm feelings.'

'Lighting is a crucial element in adding warmth to a bedroom and shifting the mood as the days become shorter,' says interior designer Janie Hungerford. 'Introduce warmer, softer layers of lighting beside the bed or in other corners of the room, whether it’s in the form of candles, bedside lamps, or sconces. Being able to dim your lighting and using warm bulbs is key.'

2. Comforting Bedding

Comforting, warmer bedding is an essential layer going into fall. Draping a thick wool throw at the foot of your bed or replacing linen sheets with something softer will instantly make your bed feel cozier.

'The changing of seasons brings an opportunity to switch things up in your bedroom,' says Janie. 'Switching out your duvet for a warmer, heavier option and changing the color of your bed sheets is a fantastic way to create a fall experience. A heavier duvet feels more weighted and comforting, and a change in bed linens can make a big impact, as the bed is usually the main focal point in the room.'

Start with a neutral base, like an organic duvet cover in a warm beige or soft ochre. Then add a textural accent like a fluffy throw or a tapestry pillow, followed by a moody-toned sham or bolster.

3. Upholstered Headboards

An upholstered headboard is another way to add tactile layers to your bedroom and soften the room; plus, it is an easy switch that can make a big impact. Stylish statement headboards add a punchy dose of pattern or color, too, perfect for schemes in need of a little contrast.

'When designing this cozy and layered bedroom, our jumping-off point was this vintage Chinoiserie screen repurposed as a headboard', explains interior designer Caroline Levenson. 'From there, we layered textiles in a mix of pattern and texture – crisp cotton sheets, a soft wool blanket, a colorful kantha quilt folded at the bottom of the bed. Art, books, a plant or fresh flowers, and personal objects such as a bowl of seashells picked up on vacation all make this cozy sanctuary personal and hard to leave.'

4. A Cozy Seating Corner

Reading nooks are a huge fall trend this year, and the bedroom can be a perfect spot to add a dedicated corner for curling up with a book and a coffee. It doesn't have to take up a huge amount of space; just a big squishy armchair with a cocktail table to perch a read and a drink will create this little zone within the room.

'For our new home, we wanted our "launched" daughter's bedroom to be a cozy retreat for her when she comes home for visits and holidays and also serve as a comfortable guest room when needed,' explains photographer Jane Beiles. 'We achieved a sense of peaceful retreat by layering bedding to allow for each guest's personal "thermostat", mixing in a family heirloom (the bedside lamp belonged to my aunt, an interior designer, which adds a sense of history as well as a conversation point for guests, many of whom were acquainted with my relative), and adding a plush sofette so guests have a private place to enjoy their morning coffee, curl up with a book or get some work done.'

'We always fill the bedside water pitcher for our guests and clip fresh blooms from our garden to create a welcoming home away from home,' adds Jane.

5. Textiles as Art

Antique textiles look great draped on a bed, but they can also bring lived-in coziness and an extra layer to bedroom walls, too.

'I love using textiles as art,' states interior designer Laura Stephens. 'An antique fabric fragment or an old rug framed on the wall brings so much warmth and history into a space, and there’s something wonderfully autumnal about surrounding yourself with pieces that feel worn-in and storied as the nights draw in.'

'You don’t need to completely redecorate to introduce the look,' Laura adds. 'Try combining a striped chair with a checked cushion, or layering two contrasting patterns in the same warm palette. And if you have an old textile tucked away – a shawl, a scarf, or even a beautiful rug that is past its best on the floor – have it framed. It’s such an easy and affordable way to add real character and make a room feel more personal.'

Designing a cozy bedroom is more than just making your bed as comfortable as it can be. Covering your walls in soft, tactile fabrics will cocoon your sleep space; warm, ambient lighting will create an atmosphere; and a comfortable corner for contemplation will bring that all-important sense of nostalgia and charm.

I ve never been an over-the-top seasonal decorator (Christmas aside). I don't fill the house with themed accessories every few months, but I do think a home should feel different in October than it does in July. Fortunately, I find that you can capture the mood of a season without relying on piles of decor.

A few times a year, I make small changes that help our rooms feel more comfortable, functional, and suited to the months ahead. Fall is probably my favorite time to do this, at least for our indoor spaces. I love bringing warmth back into the house and preparing it for cooler nights and earlier evenings at home.

Rather than redecorating every surface, I focus on fall layering – changing colors, adding texture, and switching fragrances to switch the atmosphere of the home. These are the simple changes I make each year to reset our home for fall.

Switch to Cozier Bedding

I always start by changing the bedding around the house, since it’s the most practical part of the reset. I swap summer-weight duvets and blankets for warmer down inserts, or if we’re still in that unpredictable stretch when temperatures rise and fall every few days, I simply add another layer.

Once the cooler weather settles in, I pack away the lightweight bedding for the season. I wash or dry-clean everything first, then store it in a canvas storage tote under the bed or in the attic, so it’s clean and ready to use again next summer.

Layer in Rich Textiles

Decorative textiles are one of the most effective ways to signal the season. In my bedroom, lightweight linen and summery florals give way to velvet, wool and tapestry in deeper shades. I also add a slightly darker duvet cover to the bed and change the throw and pillow on the armchair in the corner. You don’t need to replace every textile: introducing one richer color, like amber, rust, or olive, along with two or three heavier textures is usually enough to shift the mood of the room.

I use the same approach in our living spaces. I keep seasonal pillow covers folded in a drawer, which takes up far less room than storing complete pillows and makes them easy to rotate throughout the year. After changing a few covers, I add extra throw blankets to the baskets near our sofas and chairs. This ensures they’re useful rather than simply decorative, while also giving the rooms a subtle visual signal that they’re ready for cooler weather.

Arrange Seasonal Flowers and Foliage

After the textiles are taken care of, I work on changing out the flowers and greenery. During the summer, I fill vases with flowers that peak in the warm weather, like hydrangeas, lilies and alstroemeria, along with a few faux leafy branches. But by fall, those arrangements begin to feel out of place.

Until the holiday greenery comes out, I use dried hydrangeas, magnolia leaves, dahlias, celosia, mums and branches with turning leaves foraged from the yard. These arrangements bring the season’s softer, earthier colors indoors.

Scent with the Changing Seasons

Lighting a candle is an almost-daily ritual for me, so I also change the scents around the house with the season. I do buy the occasional pumpkin spice candle, but I tend to prefer more unique fall fragrances because they remind me of my home during that particular time of year. Pomegranate, fig and tobacco are my go-tos, especially when they’re paired with cedar, leather or a hint of smoke. I’ve included my current favorite in the shopping roundup below.

Stack Logs by the Fire

Our home has one wood-burning fireplace, in the living room, and it typically sits unused from late April until October. During the warmer months, we spend more time in the casual family room, but the fireplace draws us back into the living room once the temperature drops.

To make sure we're ready for that first chilly evening, I bring the firewood rack out of the garage, fill it with logs and set out the matches. Like the rest of the reset, though, it’s also a subtle visual signal that the seasons are changing.

None of these changes is particularly dramatic, but I find that heavier bedding, richer textiles, a few branches from the yard and warmer evening light are enough to make the rooms feel more comfortable and in tune with the time of year, without the need to redecorate every surface.

'Burrowcore is all about creating a home you can sink into,' explains interior designer Michelle Gage. 'It’s cozy, layered, and a little cocoon-like; a space that makes you want to stay awhile. The key is surrounding yourself with pieces that feel as good as they look. We’re craving comfort at home more than ever, and Burrowcore takes that feeling of ‘I just want to stay in’ and turns it into a design aesthetic. It’s about creating little pockets of comfort that make everyday life feel calmer – a cozy reading corner, an extra-soft throw, warm lighting or nature-inspired accents.'

'Burrowcore represents a desire for spaces that bring comfort, peace, calm, and harmony to the home,' says Lauren Covino-Smith, Designer and Principal of Styled Ivy Interiors. Is there a pattern that feels more synonymous with fall than plaid? Year after year, this pattern trend finds its way back into the design scene right as the weather dips below 60 degrees. We see it in fashion (think printed flannel shirts, tartan jackets, and plaid-lined boots), but the pattern has just as much appeal in the world of interior design, offering that same cozy, effortless feel as your well-worn, comes-out-year-after-year plaid shirt.

The majority of people would consider the meal to be the most important part of a dinner party. But for me – a design-obsessed style editor – it's, of course, the decor. I'm all about color schemes, layering, and little details that make a tablescape come to life – my favorite detail being lighting. 'The rich, warm hues create a welcoming backdrop for autumn, balancing boldness with earthy undertones that bring a cozy, seasonal glow indoors.'

Burgundy and yellow work perfectly alongside the olive green cabinets in the charming farmhouse kitchen. The scheme was inspired by nature, uplifting those earthy olive tones with the vibrant yellow and rich red. 'The large window over the sink at the back of the kitchen overlooks a beautiful and lovingly tended garden, which was a great source of color inspiration,' explains Laura Parkinson, director of design studio Palmer and Stone. 'It had previously felt very cold, so part of our brief was to create a warm and inviting kitchen for our client who are keen cooks.'

'Following the surge of interest in burgundy in clothing fashion, we've definitely seen a rise in interest in using it within the home. Our studio color palettes tend to keep to a more natural or tonal base, and then we might add a brighter, or more 'acid', color into the mix to cut through,' Laura continues. 'In this case, we've used a warm red-burgundy that feels very natural alongside an orange-yellow that is much sharper. The addition of a few other colors in the mix (in this case khaki green and a deep sky blue) stops the yellow and red from overwhelming the space.'

'As this is a north-facing room, bringing in warmth was our priority,' explains Rachel Taylor, founder of interior design studio Bucknall James and designer of this living room. 'Despite the huge windows, the previous off-white walls left the space feeling rather flat, so we knew color would be key. Our client fell in love with the Ikat rug by Luke Irwin, and this became the starting point for the rest of the scheme.'

'We wanted to create that cozy, enveloping feeling that draws you in on a gloomy winter's day, the kind of room where you light the fire and settle down to watch a film,' Rachel explains. 'At the same time, it was equally important that it didn't feel dark or heavy, so Edward Bulmer's Trumpington on the walls felt like the perfect balance. Come summer, the light flooding through the windows transforms the room into a sunny, uplifting space.'

'The combination of mustard and earthy burgundy works particularly well paired with brown antiques to ground the scheme and add depth,' Rachel adds. 'Adding pattern to break up any block colors softens the impact as well as connecting the colors, like the rug, artwork and cushions in this project. Warm, autumnal tones especially are being embraced, and it's easy to see why, as they are so pleasing to live with. For us, this project was about creating a space warm and cocooning, yet still light, cheerful, and full of life.'

The ochre yellow paint and rich burgundy paint bring an effortless warmth to this cozy living room too, adding a sense of heritage and character. 'I’ve always been drawn to those slightly muddy, earthy colors that you find in old houses,' says Russell Loughlan, founder of The House on Dolphin Street. 'I didn’t want the room to feel as though it had been designed around a color scheme, though,' he adds. 'It’s much more about layering things that I love, so old furniture, ceramics, textiles, and letting the colors build up naturally. I think rooms are much more interesting when everything isn’t perfectly matched.'

'Burgundy and mustard have that wonderful, slightly old-fashioned quality to them, which I mean in the best possible way. They’re colors you see in old textiles, paintings and historic interiors, so even though they feel very relevant at the moment, there’s something quite timeless about them too,' he adds.

'I think the key is not to be too literal with them. I wouldn’t necessarily have a mustard wall and then feel I needed to find exactly the right burgundy to go with it,' Russell advises. 'It’s much nicer to work with variations like ochre, tobacco and warm yellow alongside rust, oxblood and deep red. That slight mismatch is what makes a room feel layered rather than decorated.'

'I also like one color to do more of the work. In this room, the ochre is the backdrop and the burgundy comes through much more strongly in the furniture, so they’re not fighting for attention. And then I’d bring in plenty of things that aren’t really ‘colors’ at all, so old/dark wood, aged brass, natural linen, dark brown, ceramics.'

While deep red and yellow aren't a typical kitchen color combination, they're a great way to introduce depth and character to the cooking space. Hence, interior designer Lucinda Kellaway applied a pink-tinted burgundy paint to this kitchen island and used a pale mustard shade on the kitchen cabinetry.

'I wanted the kitchen to feel warm and welcoming, but with a bit of drama. The rich burgundy island brings depth and character, while the yellow is softer and sunnier for balance,' Lucinda explains. 'Yellow and burgundy certainly seem to be a combination to watch right now, but they’re also colors with heritage roots and real longevity. I think we’re all becoming braver with color again, which is lovely!'

When pairing the two together, refrain from being too literal. 'I wouldn’t try to match the accessories too closely,' adds Lucinda. 'I’d bring in natural materials like wood, warm whites, and a little pattern to create contrast. The aim is for everything to feel layered and considered, rather than overly coordinated.'

When bringing two rich shades like mustard and deep red into the home, paint expert Helen says it's crucial to let one color lead. 'To create balance between these saturated shades, use the 60:30:10 rule – allowing one color to take the lead, the other to work as an accent, and a warm neutral to anchor the scheme.'

Retreating to the comfort of our abodes in the colder months is all the more enjoyable when they reflect the change in season. As the days grow crisper and darker, the need for a cozy, cocooning, and comforting sleep space becomes more apparent.

Creating a restful place to relax in during fall starts with swapping lighter, brighter summer decor with richer, more luxurious choices. And that doesn't mean all the usual fall bedroom decor either; keeping things simple by replacing a linen throw with something thicker or swapping a citrus candle for a spiced and headier scent can make your bedroom feel remarkably more aligned with the season.

These five tweaks might be simple, but they make all the difference to a bedroom during the fall months.

1. Swap Fresh Scents For Something Spiced

The beauty of fragrance is that it can transport you to a place of the utmost calm; that's why transitioning your bedroom from late summer to fall should always start with a seasonal scent. It's a quick fix that conjures up instant feelings of coziness and warmth, providing comfort as the weather turns crisper.

A reliable fall candle is a no-brainer on your bedside table for evening ambience, and a good reed diffuser will waft a comforting scent throughout your bedroom at every hour of the day. 'Because we love to use all of our senses, smell is another great way to change things up,' says Janie Hungerford of Hungerford Interior Design. 'If you love candles or diffusers, switching out your scent for something that feels more like fall is a great way to immerse your senses in the season.'

'Cedar, spice, fig, or something that simply reminds you of falling leaves can instantly change the feeling of a room,' Janie adds. 'For those who like to have foliage or flowers inside, adding seasonal branches or flowers is another way to engage your senses of smell and sight, while connecting your bedroom to what’s happening outside.'

2. Create Pockets of Warm Light

Natural light floods our sleep spaces in the summer months, so bedroom lighting isn't typically our main focus. Come fall, however, pockets of warmth are exactly what our bedrooms need to aid the darker evenings.

'Lighting is a crucial element in adding warmth to a space and shifting the mood as the days become shorter,' says Janie. 'Introduce warmer, softer layers of lighting beside the bed or in other corners of the room, whether it’s in the form of candles, bedside lamps or sconces. Being able to dim your lighting and using warm bulbs is key.'

'There are also so many great options for small portable lamps that don’t require any electrical wiring. Companies like Pooky have great options that can really help personalize your space. Their portable lamps have interchangeable lampshades, making it quick and affordable to change the shade depending on the season.'

3. Replace Linen Shams With Textured Pillows

'Every fall, I make a few small, irresistibly simple changes to my bedroom,' says interior designer Kathy Kuo. 'I start with decorative pillows, swapping out the light linen covers that carried me through spring and summer and replacing them with rich velvet versions. Velvet is one of those undeniably warm, inviting fabrics that’s a natural fit for the cold-weather seasons. Opt for pillows with contrast piping or fringe trim if you want to add a little extra oomph to the look.'

Fall throw pillows don't have to feel stereotypically autumnal. 'I’m a white sheet person, especially when they’re really crisp, but I love to bring in color through a quilt, a throw and some decorative scatter or bolster cushions,' says Tabitha Organ, founder of Tabitha Isobel. 'I’d swap lightweight summer blankets for a heavier bedspread or quilt, and lighter neutral or pastel cushions for richer, earthier tones such as deep terracotta, tobacco brown or a rich, moody green, depending on the room’s palette.'

4. Drape a Wool Throw At the End Of Your Bed

'The other swap comes at the foot of the bed,' says Kathy. 'Out goes the breezy cotton blanket, and in its place I add a thick, warm throw in wool, faux fur, or cashmere. I especially love a throw blanket in quintessential fall tones like olive green, burnt umber, or ochre; it’s an easy way to play with color without making a permanent commitment.'

Richly woven tapestry bedding or heavy jacquard fabrics can add texture to your 'bedscape' and create a beautiful contrast with softer, smoother velvets or cottons.

'As the temps cool, it's nice to give your bed an extra layer,' says designer Alexa Harris-Ralff, founder of AHR Designs. 'When making the bed, I like to add a quilt or coverlet to a bed and then fold the duvet at the bottom for a layered look. If our clients only sleep with a duvet cover and insert, then oftentimes they will swap the insert for a heavier version for the cooler temps. A chunky throw blanket is also a nice addition in the fall.'

5. Bring In Rich, Moody Tones

Now is the time to really embrace fall color schemes. While a deep plum paint (Farrow & Ball's Brinjal is a cult favorite) will make your room feel like a cocooning retreat, you needn't commit to a whole new paint job for your bedroom to feel inviting.

Take inspiration from color trends and introduce them in small, but intentional doses. Think a rich glazed vase, a striking piece of wall art, or a soft rug underfoot. 'Fall is all about adding layers and comfort to really mimic that feeling of retreat and sanctuary at home,' says James Montgomery-Castle, bedding expert and buyer at Soak&Sleep. 'On color, the obvious move is quintessential fall colors like burnt orange and rust; however, if this feels too on the nose, an unexpected option is blue.'

'Atlantic blue and rich teal are extremely calming, don’t feel overly themed, and still offer you that ‘cave-like’ feel you want in a bedroom. If you do want to go warm, look to deep earthy tones like mocha and chocolate. All these sit really well next to neutrals, so you’re adding to your summer bedding rather than replacing everything.'

'An autumnal bedroom is a touch darker, more layered, and very inviting,' says Kathy. 'The palette shifts toward deeper jewel tones. The textures get thicker and softer. There's nothing seasonal on display in the pumpkin sense; it should simply feel like the room has put on a cozy sweater.'

'From there, we layer warmth in through countertop stone and backsplash selections, since those are the next-largest visual real estate in a kitchen. The common thread here is scale: cabinets, counters, and backsplash all take up enough visual space that committing there makes a real impact.'

Charcoal and black paints may sound bold for a kitchen color, but when you choose the right shades (and undertones), the result is surprisingly alluring. 'We often gravitate towards darker, more atmospheric colors,' says Nick Cryer, Founder of Berkeley Place, who says seeking out shades with brown or red undertones, rather than blue, is the secret to these more daring, dramatic colors.

Decorating with darker colors relies on warm undertones to ensure your kitchen feels inviting, rather than cold. 'These are colors with real tonal depth, which respond beautifully to changing natural and artificial light. We return to them particularly in period kitchens, including rooms people often assume are too dark to carry a strong color: lower-ground floors, single-aspect rooms or spaces with limited natural light.'

In this kitchen, the dark charcoal palette works for two reasons: warm undertones and a large window that fills the kitchen with natural light, so it never feels dark or uninviting. 'Color is never static; much like pigment in a painting, its character is determined by the light around it,' Nick notes. 'A charcoal with warm undertones responds particularly well to afternoon sun and warmer artificial light, revealing subtle brown and red notes as the light changes.'

But this autumn, we’re noticing a new fall color trend joining forces with the greats – purple. Plaid bedding has historically been an ick for anyone with an ounce of style prowess outside the confines of an après-winter cabin. But Brooklinen just made plaid bed sheets actually pretty for 2026, and I’m happy to report it doesn’t give ‘lumberjack’ in the slightest.

The Opening Note

Fall is one of my favorite times of year, and after the many heatwaves we’ve had this summer, I have to admit I’m more than ready for it. There’s something about the change in season that makes me want to slow down, spend more time at home, and make everything feel a little warmer and more inviting.

I’ve always thought that getting a home ready for fall should be less about decorating for the season and more about adjusting the way we live in our spaces. I’m not particularly interested in filling a room with obvious fall motifs or making everything feel themed.

The easiest place to start is with texture. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, I find myself reaching for wool throws, linen cushions, heavier blankets, and anything else that adds a little softness. Swapping lighter summer textiles for pieces with more weight and texture can completely change the atmosphere of a room, without requiring a complete redo. These Lulu & Georgia Molloy Vases were the first on my list for a quick and easy update.

Fall color is another simple way to make a home feel ready for the season ahead. I love bringing in deeper, warmer shades at this time of year – burgundy, olive, rust, ochre, camel, and rich browns are all particularly appealing. But I think restraint is important. You don't need to turn your home into a sea of autumnal color. A single pillow, a lampshade, a piece of pottery, or even a small accessory can introduce enough warmth to shift the mood of a room.

In fact, I’m increasingly drawn to seasonal decorating that doesn't look overly seasonal at all. The best additions are the ones that make sense in your home long after fall has passed. A beautiful wool throw will still be useful in January; an earthy-toned ceramic vase will work just as well in spring; a well-made basket can hold blankets now and beach towels next summer. I think the most successful homes are built around pieces that can evolve with them rather than things that only have a place for three months of the year.

Fall is also the perfect time to rethink storage. There’s something very satisfying about putting away the things that belong to summer and making room for what we’ll actually use over the coming months. Outdoor cushions, picnic blankets, lightweight throws, and summer accessories can all be packed away, while baskets and storage boxes keep everything organized without making a room feel overly functional.

And I think beautiful storage is particularly important here. We spend so much time thinking about the things that are on display, but the pieces that help a home function deserve just as much consideration. A well-designed basket or a beautiful storage box can make a practical corner feel intentional rather than like somewhere you've simply run out of places to put things.

As we move into fall and winter, our homes inevitably become more hardworking. We spend more time indoors, cook more, entertain at home, and rely on our living spaces in a different way. Lighting becomes more important. Cozy living room ideas and snug rooms matter more. Blankets need to be within easy reach. Even the way we organize an entryway can make a difference when coats, boots, and umbrellas suddenly become part of everyday life again.

I’m a firm believer that these practical considerations should be part of decorating rather than something we think about afterward. A home shouldn't have to choose between being beautiful and being functional.

Brigette recently joined Joss & Main’s inaugural Designer Collective, which taps an equally starry roster of talents, including Jennifer Fisher, Camille Styles, and Nina Takesh, to pluck their favorite decor finds.
