As they're not available yet as a take out, I've resorted to finding my own recipe for a DIY version that I can whip up whenever I like at my home coffee bar. It requires a good homemade syrup (and a bit of patience) but will be worth the effort.

Ingredients

• 1 cup water
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1 can condensed milk (14 oz.)
• 1 cup pumpkin puree
• 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 2 shots espresso
• 1 cup milk

Method

• Add the water and sugar to a pan and simmer gently until the sugar has dissolved.
• Take the pan off the heat and stir in the condensed milk, pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
• Stir until everything is combined. For the best results, blend until smooth (an immersion blender will be easiest here) and then strain (use something like this premium stainless steel fine mesh strainer from Walmart) these until you're left with a glossy pumpkin syrup.
• Prepare your espresso (using one of the best espresso machines), then add up to 4 tablespoons of syrup to your mug, depending on how sweet you want your latte to be.

How to remove pumpkin stains from floors

The quicker you clean up pumpkin stains on floors the better, as it increases your chance of fully removing marks before they set in for good.

When you have finished packing things into Halloween decor storage ideas, and have either found some eco-friendly ways to use leftover Halloween pumpkins or have safely disposed of or composted pumpkins, you can start with these cleaning tips.

What you will need

• A soft sponge, or microfiber cloths (both from Walmart) to avoid damaging surfaces
• A good floor cleaner – our experts recommend Murphy’s Oil Soap, from Amazon
• White vinegar – such as the Great Value distilled White Vinegar at Walmart
• Baking soda – we like Arm & Hammer baking soda, available at Walmart
• Warm water
• A clean, dry towel
• A wood-safe cleaner – such as Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner at Walmart for real hardwood floors

1. Remove all residue before starting

No matter the material of your flooring ideas, the first step to removing pumpkin stains from them is to always remove the bulk of the residue using a paper towel, or a soft sponge dampened with a bit of water.

Ryan Knoll, professional cleaner and founder of Tidy Casa begins, ‘Wipe away any residue with warm, soapy water (wringing the sponge out to avoid over saturating the flooring – especially on stone and real wood). Use a microfiber cloth or sponge to avoid scratching the floor, remember that some sponges have two sides. Always use the softer side to avoid scratches.’

We recommend using Dawn Dish Soap, from Walmart, as it is tough on stains but gentle on your floors. If you want to opt for a commercial floor cleaner, however, Ryan suggests, ‘Method’s Hard Floor Cleaner, at Walmart, which works well on most surfaces, as does Murphy’s Oil Soap.'

2. For tile and vinyl, opt for a vinegar cleaner

Cleaning tile floors and cleaning vinyl floors is easier than dealing with natural materials or carpets. These hardy floor covers can easily be cleaned with vinegar without the risk of damage.

Ryan Knoll continues, ‘For tougher stains on non-porous floors , a one-to-one vinegar-water mix can help dissolve any residual sugars or organic material. Just apply, wait a few minutes, and wipe clean.’

Though, Ryan advises avoid vinegar on stone surfaces as they are porous. He adds, ‘Most floors should be cleaned with PH-balanced neutral or non-acidic cleaners. So when cleaning with things like vinegar be conscious that this should really only be done on tile and never on wood floors. If you’re unsure if your floor is safe for more acidic cleaners, test in a small, inconspicuous area first.’

3. For natural stone, try baking soda

Natural stone floors are more likely to hold a stain than tile or vinyl, but vinegar can be too harsh. When cleaning natural stone floors, Ryan suggests cleaning with baking soda instead.

He explains, ‘If the stain doesn’t go away after some soap and water, get a thick paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the area. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes so the baking soda can do its thing. It will lift the stain naturally.’

When mixing baking soda and water together, there are no exact measurements. Simply add warm water to the baking soda bit by bit, mixing as you go until it reaches a spreadable consistency. The amount of baking soda you need will depend on the size of the area you need to clean.

4. Stick with a wood-safe cleaner for hardwood floors

Cleaning real wood floors is a delicate operation, especially when dealing with organic stains.

Ryan Knoll, says, ‘If the pumpkin leaves a mark on hardwood, use a pH-neutral wood cleaner instead of vinegar. Buff gently with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the finish.’

1. Remove residue with a paper towel

As with cleaning hard floors, Ken Doty, COO and cleaning expert at The Maids recommends, ‘Blotting as much of the stain as you can to start. Use a paper towel or a clean white cloth.’

Always make sure you dab at the stain, rather than rub. This encourages the stain to lift, rather than being rubbed further into the carpet.

2. Work quickly with dish soap

Carpet is one of the many surprising things you can clean with Dawn Powerwash, Ken Doty continues.

He recommends, ‘Mixing together a cleaning solution containing one tablespoon of dish soap and two cups of cold water. Apply the solution to the stain using a clean white cloth, and blot gently, working from the outside of the stain to the center to prevent spreading further out.’

3. Dab the soap away with a dry cloth and rinse

Ken concludes, ‘Finally, rinse the area with a small amount of water and once again blot with a clean, dry towel to dry.’

Opening windows and doors to increase ventilation will speed up the drying process, but you can also use the best dehumidifier to avoid musty smells and lingering damp spots.

4. Repeat as needed

If the stain persists, repeat the procedure again until it has completely lifted.

You can also try cleaning a carpet with baking soda to help lighten stains. Once you have removed most of the residue with a paper towel and soapy water, mix a paste of baking soda and warm water and spread it over the pumpkin mark. Allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes and up to overnight before scraping the paste away with a dull knife, and cleaning again with soapy water before drying.

Ken Doty, cleaning expert concludes, ‘To prevent this issue from occurring next Halloween, place your pumpkins on a waterproof tray or plastic sheet to catch any drips or rotted material. Check the pumpkins regularly, and consider switching to an LED candle as opposed to a real one to prevent accelerated rotting due to the heat.'

3. Costumes and linens

Tina Priestly, home organization expert, owner and CEO at Ready, Set, REFRESH offers this advice, 'For things like tablecloths or costumes, fold them neatly and store them in breathable cotton bags to prevent mustiness.'

I was almost as captivated by this book as I was by the tins themselves. I couldn't stop folding down pages to bookmark delicious flavor combinations. There's a Cookies 'n' cream Bundt, Sticky Toffee, and even S'mores ( a marshmallow-coated chocolate cake with graham cracker filling... I mean, how delicious?).

The trick to using Nordic Ware tins

I set out to make a seasonal, pumpkin spice batter. But before I could start baking, I had to tackle the most critical step – preparing the tin. I hadn’t realized just how essential this part was, until I researched it. Nordic Ware is clear: the pan must be prepped with baking spray that contains flour, like this one from Target, to ensure a flawless release.

This is where I panicked – I couldn't find that specific spray locally to me. Nordic Ware says, ‘We recommend only using baking spray with flour in it. Please do NOT use a regular cooking spray because it tends to leave a sticky residue on the pan, and the cake may stick. The residue left on the pan may be very difficult to clean completely.’

A sigh of relief, as I realized I could use their approved alternative: a generous coating of melted butter, applied with a good pastry brush and finished with a dusting of flour.

Another top tip that I stumbled across after some experimentation: use a large ice cream scoop or spoon to transfer the batter into the tin. It's far easier than scraping with a spatula, which turned out pretty messy – the last thing you want to do is compromise the clean lines of the pan’s intricate design.

The moment of truth

Once the tin was filled, I placed it into the oven and eagerly awaited the results. Thirty minutes later, I pulled the tin out, resisting the temptation to flip it immediately. Nordic Ware’s instructions are clear: you must cool the cake in the tin for 10 minutes before attempting to release it. This step ensures the cake sets properly and doesn’t crumble when inverted.

I followed these instructions to the letter, and I’m so glad I did. The moment I tapped the tin and revealed the cake, I was greeted with a perfectly formed bouquet of pumpkins – each curve defined, smooth, and elegant.

I brought it to a dinner party and the hosts were equally thrilled. I was flattered but couldn't take credit – it was all the tin's work!

However, I was nervous about the taste. Could something so sculptural actually taste good? The cake was a little dense in my opinion, but still delicious. Our friends actually kept the cake to eat throughout the week, they liked it that much.

Clean up and maintenance

Nordic Ware is a family-owned company based in Minnesota, and they've been crafting iconic pans since the mid-1950s. Most famously, the Bundt® pan. Co-founder, Dave Dalquist, actually coined and trademarked the term "Bundt" for a round, fluted cake tin – which rose to fame in the Pillsbury Bake Off 1966.

Last October, I was lucky enough to attend an Autumnal Floral Masterclass at The Real Flower Company, where I learned exactly how to recreate Witherspoon's easy fall decorating idea. Though the look is simple, the tips and tricks from the class came in handy for creating a bouquet that lasted for weeks after putting it together. Here's my advice for building your own floral pumpkin display. You will need a pumpkin, chicken wire, greenery, flowers, and water.

First, take your pumpkin. Cut a circle around the stem large enough to contain all of your flowers. Then, scoop out the seeds and meat on the inside. Though the pumpkin was already scooped out at the class I went to, the leader, Rosebie Morton, emphasized the importance of drying out the inside to make it last.

Next, take your chicken wire. Crunch it into a ball so it can fit inside the hole you cut in the pumpkin. Make sure to leave the openings between the wire wide enough to fit flower stems inside. This will make sure your plants stay in place

Now, it's time to add your fall flowers and foliage. Start with greenery to bulk out the arrangement and ensure it looks full and vibrant. Slot each stem into one of the holes in the chicken wire.

Now, it's time to add your autumn flowers. Orange, red, yellow, and pink blooms can be used for an especially seasonal look, but more white can be used for something more neutral like in Witherspoon's home. The number one trick for a bouquet that bursts with life is alternating the heights of the plants. Try integrating a blend of tall, medium, and shorter flowers, using a good pruning tool to trim the stems.

Finally, add a few inches of water and plant food to the bottom of your pumpkin to keep the flowers alive. Replace with fresh water every few days for a long-lasting pumpkin bouquet. Voila!

‘LED candles are the safest and most efficient option, so keep real candles away from flammable materials and fishing lines,’ she warns.

When picking your LED candles, Annemarie Schumacher, award-winning event planner and founder of Make Every Day an Event says, ‘Getting remote control candles with a timer. Since they’ll be hanging, you don’t want to have to turn them on and off each night. You also don’t want to have to replace the batteries mid-season. So a timer is essential to keep your candles shining brightly throughout the Halloween season.’

Simply slot the appropriate batteries into place and check that the remote works before you start stringing everything up. We have some great tips on how to make LED candles look like the real thing if you want to add an extra magic touch to this festive decor.

2. Attach the fishing line using glue dots

Clear fishing line, available at Amazon, will be your best friend when it comes to this DIY Halloween decor idea. When attaching it to your candle, you have two options, says Annemarie Schumacher, award-winning event planner. Tying it around the ‘flame’, or sticking it on with glue dots.

She adds, ‘I like to avoid attaching the fishing line to the area around the wick. It seems natural to tie the fishing line around the wick. But over time, it can pull it out and cause the candle to stop working. I prefer to attach the fishing line using clear glue dots toward the top of the taper. This helps to avoid damaging the candles.’

Use removable glue dots, available on Amazon so when it's time to pack away your decor, you can peel them off without hassle, and avoid them sticking to things you don't want to.

3. Decide on a suitable location

With the candles powered and strung, you can decide on the best place for your fall decor ideas. Annemarie continues, ‘You want to carefully choose the area in which you’ll be hanging the candles, this is a project that isn’t suitable for every space. If your fall front porch is a relatively windy area, this may not be the best décor choice for you.

‘On that note, you also want to make sure the area is dark enough at night that the candlelight will really create an atmosphere and mood. This may require you to turn off or dim outdoor lighting ideas.’

‘If decorating outdoors, ensure your candles are waterproof, and consider factors like wind, visibility, and any hazards before hanging, adds Olivia Bufalini, interior designer.

4. Clean your ceiling and attach the hooks

Before you stick your Command hooks on the ceiling, you will need to clean your ceiling and make sure it's dry – just as you would when cleaning walls. We suggest cleaning with hydrogen peroxide. This gives the hooks a stable and dry surface to stick to and reduces the likelihood of your candles falling.

Annemarie Schumacher adds, ‘You need to use quality supplies and follow the manufacturer’s directions. With Command hooks, you need to clean the surface to which they’ll be affixed with alcohol and let the surface dry prior to attaching the hook. Also, you need to wait at least an hour after attaching the hook to hang the candles to ensure the adhesive has had time to stick. Following these steps will go a long way to ensuring success.'

Step one: Create a secure base for the DIY

Black Bat Flower

A fascinating bloom, Tacca chantrieri or bat flower has black, bat-shaped petals with brown or black bracts and long whiskers or bracteoles. Bizarre but beautiful, it comes in a range of enigmatic, dusky colors but the black variety is so apt for Halloween. The leafless stems grow to around 25 inches (65cm) tall, emerging from low, curving glossy green leaves.

This perennial is native to the semi-tropical forests of Asia and Australia, so it’s no surprise that it is relatively tricky to grow. They can be grown in USDA zones 9b to 11, prefer a part sunny, part shady spot in well drained but moist soil. Bat flowers thrive in a warm, steady temperature of 70 to 80 degrees F (21-26C). Avoid letting conditions dip below 55F (12C) as the plant will perish.

Ghost plant

Also known as the American Ice Plant and Indian Pipe, this unusual plant bears a single drooping, bell-like flower on top of a fleshy, upright stem. The flowerhead slowly becomes upright as the seed ripens adding to the plant’s mystical nature.

‘Ghost Plants are some of the most interested plants and the spookiness is in the name,’ says plant expert Katie Sunderlage. ‘White in color, almost translucent, they have a unique shape that is similar to outstretched, bent fingers making this the perfect addition to a spooky garden in warm climates.’

Monotropa uniflora is hardy in zones 8-11 and does best in full to part sun, in more moist soil.

Dead Man’s Fingers

The elongated fruits of Decaisnea fargesii or the Blue Bean Shrub are definitely an eerie sight and a brilliant Halloween decoration. Hanging from the branches of this shrub, the knobbly pale blue pods look like giant fingers and are curiously filled with a clear, sticky jelly surrounding the large pea-like seeds.

Reaching a height and spread of 13-26ft (4-8m), this deciduous shrub needs plenty of space, preferably in a sheltered spot. Grow in partial shade or full sun with moist but well drained soil. Foliage is attractive appearing as a lime green tinged with blue in spring before maturing to a pure yellow in fall.

Sempervivum Cobweb

Here the name says it all; this tough beauty - Sempervivum arachnoideum – looks as though it’s been draped in an elaborate and sticky spider web. Tightly packed rosettes of fleshy green leaves, tinged with touches of rust red, cluster happily together in cracks and crevices of boulders and roof tiles. Covered in fine, white fibrous hairs, these form in the centre of each plant and gradually spread outwards.

Forming evergreen and perennial living carpets they can cope in exposed conditions, with poor, free draining soil in full sun. They do hate damp, humid conditions though, so they may be best suited to growing indoors in some areas.

Sweet Betsy Trillium

Think Little Shop of Horrors - despite the cutesy name these trilliums are strange, triffid-like plants.

'Trillium, aka toadshade, is a native wildflower that blooms during the spring,' says bulb and perennial expert Megan Foster. 'A small deep burgundy flower blooms from the center of the three main leaves. Leaf patterns vary, but include shades of forest green, light green, and silver that together resemble the coloring of a toad’s skin - hence the common name.'

A clump-forming perennial, these shade loving plants are happiest in woodland gardens or naturalized in a wildflower meadow or orchard. Flowering in mid to late spring, they are easy to grow and reach a height of 12-18 inches (30-45cm) and 12 in (30cm) wide. Left undisturbed their rhizomes will gradually spread and form a living carpet.

Old Man Cactus

Nicknamed 'Old Man Cactus' because it’s covered in long white hairs like a grandfather’s beard, the hairy appearance of Espostoa melanostele also gives it a ghostly look,’ explains horticulturist Justin Hancock. ‘It is a slow-growing species with a vertical form, making it ideal for bright desks, tabletops, and windowsills. And, like other desert-dwelling cacti, it has low water needs.’

Don’t be fooled though, with this plants soft and cuddly looks. Beneath the fine white hairs lie rings of needle-sharp spines. Avoid overwatering as this will rot the stem and roots. Also be sure to keep the temperature above 54F (12C) if the plant is to thrive.

Toad Plant

A succulent evergreen perennial, the flowers of the toad plant are definitely the stuff of nightmares. Creepy looking with five tongue-like petals that look as though they could swallow you whole, they are a must for any All Hallows’ Eve display.

‘Toad plant or Stapelia gigantea, is creepy looking and rather smelly, making it a great addition to a spooky looking indoor garden,’ says Katie. ‘It’s a succulent with large, star-shaped blooms that smell really bad when they open. The blooms are pale yellow with purple irregular stripes throughout, while the foliage is long, slim with upward facing spines up and down the length of each leaf.’

Pitcher Plant

It’s not just the peculiar looks of a pitcher plant that fascinate, but its gravity defying and carnivorous tendencies too. An epiphytic plant, Nepenthes or the tropical pitcher plant hangs in the air clinging to other surfaces and plants for support. With numerous curvy red, yellow-green pitchers dangling from the foliage, attached only by the slenderest of tendrils, it is a real head turner, but also death trap for insects.

Luring insects to feed on the nectar within the bulbous pitcher, the creatures are unable to crawl out again. Instead they drown in the liquid and are digested by the plant’s enzymes.

While all pitcher plants prefer warm, humid and bright conditions, particularly varieties can cope with different temperatures depending on whether they are highland or lowland species. They can take 5 to 10 years to reach maturity but will produce pitchers throughout the year.

Red Cockscomb

Irresistibly creepy, the contorted, red and velvety flowers of Celosia cristata bear a striking resemblance to brains. Grown as an annual, perennial or indoor plant depending on your climate, this easy to grow favorite is a brilliant choice for DIY Halloween displays. Retaining its vivid color, even once cut, it can be added to wreaths and garlands for touch-me-if-you-dare details.

Grow in full sun, in moist but well-draining soil. Cockscomb will survive as a perennial in USDA zones 9-11.

Sarracenia

Tall, veiny and tongue-like, it’s easy to see why these carnivorous plants give many people the heebie-jeebies. This variety, with its dramatic green cones turning deep crimson at the rim, grow up to 1'-3' (30cm-90cm) and are one of the showiest pitcher plants.

‘Sarracenia can be grown outdoors in very warm climates or in a shady location during the summer months in cooler climates but is generally marketed as an indoor houseplant,’ says Katie. ‘Pitcher plants are perfect as a spooky plant as it is carnivorous, trapping prey, usually insects, in large cupped leaves that contain digestive fluid. Pitcher plants refer higher humidity and warm temperatures. They do best indoors in a bright, indirect light.’

Venus Flytrap

With it’s many snapping mouths, Dionaea muscipula or the Venus Flytrap is an endless source of morbid fascination. Luring flies and other insects into its hinged and modified leaves, fringed with teeth, they are slowly digested to provide the plant with essential nutrients. Taking up to 10 days to process, the trap will reopen ready to begin feeding all over again.

Growing naturally in bogs, these acid loving plants are happy in sun and part shade. They can be grown outside in USDA zones 5-8 and can reach heights of up to 6-12 inches (15-30cm).

Thread-leaved sundew

With its sinewy, upright leaves covered in sticky hairs, Drosera tracyi or thread-leaved sundew is a curious sight. A carnivorous bog plant, it thrives on trapping insects by curling its tentacle-like around their bodies before digesting them.

It can be grown in containers if conditions are right. These include good humidity, temperatures from 70-75F (21-23C) and high light levels. A tropical perennial, this plant can reach up to 8-10in (20-25cm) tall.

While a carved pumpkin will only last a few days, there are still plenty of ways you can use them in and around your garden, while whole pumpkins can last two to three months if stored somewhere cool, so there's no reason not to enjoy them in the kitchen afterwards, our experts say.

'I'm passionate about reducing food waste, so I'm always looking to share ideas for fully utilizing natural ingredients,' Lenny says. 'Shred or dice the leftover pumpkin pieces and add them directly to your compost pile. Coffee grounds are also high in nitrogen which helps break down organic matter.

'By mixing the pumpkin with used coffee grounds, you create an ideal ratio of carbon to nitrogen to fuel the composting process. The microbes will break down both ingredients, forming a nutrient-rich soil amendment perfect for nourishing home garden beds or house plants. This is an excellent way to recycle both the pumpkin leftovers and used coffee filters or grounds.'

Just make sure you know where not to use coffee grounds in the garden to avoid making any composting mistakes.

2. Make a face mask

While pumpkins are beneficial for your soil, did you know they're also great for your skin?

'Pumpkin flesh is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, making it perfect for a natural skin care treatment,' says Sarah Fletcher, interior designer and CEO of Flower Delivery. 'Blend the pumpkin guts with a tablespoon of honey and a splash of apple cider vinegar to create a rejuvenating face mask.

'Repurpose whole pumpkins as an ornamental centerpiece on your table,' says Fletcher. 'Fill them with seasonal vegetation, dried leaves, or even small candles to create a stunning autumnal show which could last through November.'

No compost heap? No problem! Swainston suggests that you can simply chop up pumpkins and bury them around the garden to decompose in the ground if you do not have a dedicated compost heap. Dig a hole and fill it with scraps before covering over with soil.

'Burying leftover pumpkins in the soil can benefit other plants in your yard, as the pumpkin will release essential nutrients into the ground as it decomposes over time, he says. 'These vital nutrients will then be taken in by other plants to help them grow big and strong. Breaking the pumpkin into bits will speed up the process of decomposition and it is best to spread the sections around the yard, rather than bury an entire pumpkin in one spot, to provide a spread of nutrients.

'It is important to remove seeds from the leftover pumpkin, otherwise, those seeds are liable germinate in the ground and start growing again come spring.'

5. Cook with them

The most obvious way to make the most of leftover Halloween pumpkins is to make them into a delicious seasonal snack. We recommend washing pumpkins thoroughly before blitzing them into a comforting soup using a blender.

'We tried this in the test kitchen recently and it made an amazing sweet potato and squash soup, so it will probably be great on pumpkin, too.'

Chase suggests making a soup bowl out of pumpkin, which is a perfect recipe for hosting dinner parties in fall. 'Carefully hollow out the pumpkin, leaving about a 1/2 inch of flesh and stem intact.' he says. 'This will create your edible soup bowl. Use a large spoon to remove the pulp and seeds. Brush or wipe the inside of the pumpkin with olive oil to prevent drying. Season lightly if desired.

'Place the pumpkin on a baking sheet and roast at 350°F for 1-1.5 hours until the flesh is very soft when pierced with a fork. Allow to cool slightly then fill with your favorite warm soup before serving. The pumpkin will retain its shape as a unique way to present and enjoy the soup.' It's a sustainable idea I can't wait to try.

If you're looking for something quicker and with less washing up, cook seasoned, sliced pumpkin in the air fryer. 'Over the years we've found that smaller, cheaper air fryers like this are better for roasting vegetables. The smaller capacity means that they're more efficient and therefore a lot faster,' says David.

You can also make pumpkin chips in either your oven or air fryer. 'First, thinly slice the pumpkin skin to around 1/8 inch thick slices,' says Chase. 'You can use a knife or a mandoline slicer (such as the Prepworks by Progressive Adjust-A-Slice Mandoline available at Amazon) to get uniform thickness. Lay the slices out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

'Lightly brush or spray both sides with olive oil and season generously with your favorite spice mix. Some classic options are salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika or chili powder. Roast in a 350°F oven for 30-40 minutes, flipping halfway, until the chips are dried out and crispy. Allow to cool fully before enjoying. Pumpkin chips make for a unique snack full of fiber, vitamins and minerals,' as found in a study conducted by the National Library of Medicine.

I personally love Kelston Moore's ideas for cooking with pumpkin. Moore is chef de cuisine at Haven Farm + Table, a first-of-its-kind 'agrihood' community at Fox Point Farms, which aims to set a new standard for sustainable, circular living. Helmed by a team of next-gen chefs, farmers and artisans, the three-acre regenerative farm channels organic produce (including pumpkins!) through the community, including at the Haven Farm + Table restaurant.

'Stockpile it for broth,' suggests Moore. 'Add the guts of the pumpkin with other vegetables like onion, celery, and carrots to add a deeper flavor to any dish requiring broth or stock,' which can be frozen and used all fall or winter long. Moore also suggests making a pumpkin purée, which is the 'perfect addition to rice, risotto, or to use alone as a pasta sauce.'

You can also try your hand at making creamy pumpkin hummus. 'Toast the pumpkin seeds, sauté and puree the pulp, and add canned chickpeas for a fall-inspired dip,' says Moore.

And, if you have a sweet tooth, you can bake muffins or a simple pumpkin pie in preparation for a Thanksgiving party.

6. Donate them

Minimalist blogger Ashley Mann points out that one of the best options is to donate them to a charity or animal shelter. 'In my area, we have a local horse rescue that asks for people to donate their leftover pumpkins for them to feed the horses as treats,' Mann shares.

'There are many types of horse-related charities that might appreciate such a donation, for example, I used to volunteer at a non-profit ranch that offered horseback riding as therapy. It would just be extremely important that any donated pumpkins have not been sprayed with any chemicals that could be harmful to the horses.'

You can also donate your leftover pumpkins to a local farm, or use them yourself if you enjoy backyard farming. 'Many farms accept leftover pumpkins to feed to farm animals like pigs, goats, and chickens,' says Joe Dogherty, owner at D&G Landscaping. 'Check with farms in your area.'

7. Make a bird feeder

'A wonderful way to repurpose your leftover pumpkins is by transforming them into a natural bird feeder for your garden,' comments Barbi Gardiner, founder of blog Outdoor Apothecary. To do this, you can either hang smaller pumpkins from branches with string or simply slice the pumpkin in half and set it out in a spot where birds frequent.

'Toss pumpkin scraps into vodka, infusing it for use in seasonally-inspired sippers,' says Moore, and try adding sweet, seasonal flavors such as cinnamon and vanilla. 'Or, combine leftover pumpkin, apple cider, pear juice, and fall spices for a non-alcoholic option.'

9. Make an eco-friendly pumpkin planter

'For purposes of aesthetic beauty, the pumpkin can also be scooped out and used to plant flower ornating succulents in the fall,' says John Haryasz, horticulture writer and landscape designer with a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and designer at Privacy Shrubs.

How pros stop pests eating jack-o’-lanterns

• Spray pumpkins with insecticidal soap: 'Or use neem oil, especially around openings,' says Joe Dogherty, owner of D&G Landscaping. 'The unpleasant smell deters most bugs. Reapply every few days to keep the barrier strong.'
• Put on raised platforms: Joe adds, 'Raised platforms also help by limiting moisture buildup, which attracts pests.' Roofing contractor Jason Hedtler, owner of Hedtler Roofing has seen his fair share of pests devouring jack-o'-lanterns. He says, 'An overturned crate or table puts distance between the pumpkin and moisture in the ground, which attracts pests. Keeping pumpkins in a cool, dry area away from direct contact with the ground will help.'
• Use commercial repellents: Spray pest control with pyrethrin in it. Joe says, 'It can eliminate existing pests and prevent future ones when reapplied regularly. We use similar sprays to protect plants from damage on jobs that span multiple days. Frequent use is key.' Liquid Fence is pest control pro Brendan Polichronopoulos, owner of Local Pro Book's first choice. He says, 'It’s widely used to keep pests like deer, rabbits, and other animals away from gardens, shrubs, and trees. It’s important that the composition is completely natural and does not harm humans, animals, or the environment. It is not washed off by rain and lasts up to 30 days. It is produced in the form of a spray, which makes it easy to apply. I think it is the most effective and safe option for keeping pests off jack-o'-lanterns.
• Bring jack-o'-lanterns inside at night: As pumpkins begin to rot, the smell intensifies, attracting swarming pests such as ants and flies. 'To avoid this, bring pumpkins indoors at night and place them in a cool area like a garage or shed,' Joe adds. 'The indoors environment limits pest access while the lack of light deters those that get in. This simple step can keep jack-o’-lanterns intact for up to a week after carving.'
• Apply petroleum jelly: Richard Christner, co-owner of Whitmore Pest and Wildlife Control says, 'You can apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the cared edges and inside of the pumpkin which not only slows the drying process, extending the pumpkin's life, but it also creates a slick surface that makes it hard for pest like ants and flies to access. For even better results consider mixing with essential oils or cayenne pepper prior to application.
• Use motion sensor lights: Whilst taking your pumpkins inside is preferable, if they need to stay outside, Richard has a smart tip. He says, 'If you must leave your pumpkin out overnight, consider installing motion-activated lights or sprinklers around your display. That way, nocturnal wildlife like raccoons and possums will be startled by the sudden light or water preventing them from raiding your pumpkins.'
• Place sticky bug traps: Use sticky bug traps near your pumpkins to capture flying insects before they reach your display. Richard adds, 'This method can be effective for fruit flies and gnats, which are often attracted to rotting pumpkins.' You can discreetly use these orange round sticky fly traps from Walmart among your pumpkins and decor.
• Use Diatomaceous Earth: For crawling insects like ants, earwigs, and beetles, sprinkling diatomaceous earth around your pumpkins can be a non-toxic option that works by drying out pests that come in contact with it. 'For an extra layer of protection, consider dusting the inside of your pumpkin with diatomaceous earth to help prevent nesting inside as the pumpkin starts to decompose,' says pest pro Richard Christner of Whitmore Pest and Wildlife Control. When used as per manufacturer's instructions, this is also safe around pets and children.
• Delay decay: You can slow down the decomposition of your carved pumpkin, which will in turn help keep pests that are often attracted to the smell of rot, away. Andre Kazimierski, CEO of home improvement platform Improovy says, 'Bleach solutions can help eliminate bacteria that can speed up the decaying process, and of course make sure you're scooping out the insides of the pumpkin thoroughly before placing it outside. Pumpkins preserved this way tend to attract fewer pests and are therefore less susceptible to damage.'
• Use human hair clippings: Matthew Wilson, of Handy Gardeners has an off-beat trick that works well. He says, 'Collect hair cut from recent hair cuts and scatter them around the base of the pumpkin. In general, animals like deer and rodents do not like the smell of people. I have seen this work one 100% in keeping animals away from client's gardens.'
• Spray garlic: Cleaning pro Daniel pro adds, 'One of the most effective repellents is a homemade garlic spray. Crush a few cloves of garlic and mix them with a pint of water. Allow it to steep overnight. Spray liberally on and inside your pumpkin to ward off insects.'
• Keep the yard tidy: Take proper care of your lawn, advises Meg Pearson, humane nuisance wildlife removal expert of Critter Control. ‘Keep the yard well manicured, as many smaller animals thrive in areas with unkempt lawns,’ she explains. Daniel also recommends avoiding placing pumpkins near or around high vegetation, or on the ground as this is where most pests are found.
• Seal your home: ‘Additionally, making sure your home is sealed and there are no available entry points will reduce the local critter population thus reducing the chances they make a meal out of the pumpkin,’ says Meg.
• Prepare the pumpkin the right way: ‘Ensure you completely remove and dispose of the pumpkin guts, as this moist part of the pumpkin is particularly attractive to pests,’ recommends plant expert Autumn Hilliard-Knapp of My Perfect Plants. ‘It is best practice to thoroughly dry out the inside of the pumpkin with a rag or paper towels.’
• Use a citronella candle: ‘For even further protection I would consider placing a citronella candle inside the pumpkin,’ says Autumn. You can bulk-buy citronella teal-light candles from Amazon.
• Opt for vinegar: While some recommend using a bleach solution to spray the inside of a jack-o’-lantern to deter pests, bleach is harmful and can be fatal for creatures who feed on a pumpkin treated this way, according to the Toronto Wildlife Center. ‘To safely preserve your pumpkin, instead use a natural solution of 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water,’ the center recommends instead. You can also use vinegar to clean around the home.
• Use essential oils: Josh Payne, of Classical Landscapes says essential oils are another natural way to deter pests. He says, 'Natural essential oils like peppermint or citrus effectively repel insects for days when reapplied. At my company, we use similar agents to protect plants and materials left on job sites overnight. Frequent reapplication, every two to three days, is key.' You can make a potent mix with 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil, mixed with two cups of water and applied using a spray bottle. We like the Laguna Moon essential oils pack on Amazon.
• Try cinnamon: Another alternative is cinnamon, according to Bryan Clayton, garden expert and founder of GreenPal. ‘A natural repellent that works wonders is a cinnamon spray,’ he explains. ‘Just mix a couple of tablespoons of cinnamon with water and spray it inside and around the jack-o’-lantern. It’s a great way to keep away a variety of critters.‘
• Resort to a physical barrier: Bryan suggests, ‘A small chicken wire fence or similar barrier can be an effective way to physically keep pests away from your jack- o’-lantern. It's not the prettiest solution but it works,’ he says.

Pest prevention tactics to avoid

There are many brilliant and easy ways to keep critters away from your spooktacular jack-o’-lanterns, but there is one to firmly stay away from. ‘Some people wrap their pumpkins in plastic wrap overnight thinking it will protect them,’ says Bryan Clayton. ‘Not only is it not effective, but it also traps moisture, leading to a quicker rot.’

Beasties of a variety of sizes are likely to come after jack-o’-lanterns. ‘Many rodents such as mice, rats, and squirrels will be interested in feeding on your jack-o’-lantern, but they may also attract larger animals, such raccoons, opossums, groundhogs, and deer,’ says Meg Pearson, training manager at Critter Control, a humane nuisance wildlife removal company.

‘The delectable interior of jack o’lanterns acts as a magnet for pests,’ agrees Autumn Hilliard-Knapp. ‘Pumpkins are a desirable treat for many pests, and when transformed into a jack-o’-lantern, the scent becomes particularly enticing. The carved openings provide convenient entry points for pests to reach the interior of the pumpkin. Pests also find the inside of the pumpkin to be an ideal location for reproduction, as it offers abundant nourishment for their offspring, contributing to the proliferation of pests.’

‘Unpolished silver candlesticks or candelabras make for a great display. The more wax the better and they can easily be made to look more aged and spookier with a few different color waxes dripped on it. After Halloween, this easily transitions into the holiday season.

‘Lastly, don't forget the living room. Think coffee tables topped with black and white marble chess sets, stacks of beautiful (and maybe horror-themed or classic) coffee table books just waiting to be pored over, and a few vintage curiosities to spark conversation and interest. It’s the perfect place to cozy up with a chunky blanket.’

Using texture in interior design is a must for creating a cozy space, but can also be manipulated to give a Halloween vibe when used correctly, suggests Artem Kropovinsky, interior designer and founder of Arsight:

‘Textures absolutely play a pivotal role,’ he says. ‘For that haunted mansion vibe without the scary motifs, consider integrating heavy fabrics such as velvets and tweeds for curtains, cushions, and upholstery.’

3. Use darker color schemes

It should go without saying that Halloween color schemes mean dark, moody colors. 

Jennifer Verruto, Founder and CEO of Blythe Interiors urges us to experiment with these new palettes in the bedroom to create Halloween coins in a space that is otherwise more difficult to transform for the holiday:

‘I recommend incorporating darker colors that might not be found throughout the rest of the home. Decorating with deeper hues can bring a warm, cozy atmosphere to this intimate space.

‘You can arrange these elements in vases, baskets, bowls, or trays. You can also carve or paint your pumpkins to make them more festive.’

This season, I've been tasked with trawling the internet for Halloween decorating ideas, and in doing so, I've spent hours reviewing the best retailers to shop for the very best Halloween decor.

So whether you’re shopping for scream-worthy statement pieces or stylish seasonal accents, these are the best stores to shop all things Halloween.

1. McGee & Co.

McGee & Co. is known for its sophisticated modern rustic styles, so it’s no surprise that it's embracing elevated Halloween. No garish orange pumpkins here: these seasonal pieces come in neutral tones which will blend seamlessly with most interior designs. This Halloween collection could be displayed year-round.

McGee & Co. effortlessly balances trendy designs – such as the gold metal bats garland, with hints of dark academia – this crow double taper holder is a festive spin on a classic design. With over 2,000 items listed under ‘indoor Halloween decorations’, Target’s indoor Halloween collection offers the widest range of any of our retailers. Luckily, there are plenty of specific search filters to help you sift. Target splits its 2,000 items into six categories, including wreaths and garlands, wall decor, decorative objects, throw pillows and blankets, pumpkins, and kitchen and dining. Target is known for its affordable and accessible decor, and this year’s offerings are no exception. Our three favorites, below, look good for less. We're big fans of Pottery Barn, because they bring stylish, good quality furniture and decor at mid-range prices. It's no surprise that there's a lot to love in the Pottery Barn Halloween collection. There are some really cute soft furnishings, as well as outdoor decor that will make for the perfect Halloween porch when the neighborhood comes trick-or-treating.

5. Crate & Barrel

'I go all out when it comes to our fall porch,' says interior designer and author, Liz Marie Galvan. 'My go-to secret is to fill this space with pumpkins and gourds. Pile and stack them, as if they’re spilling down the steps and overflowing from the garden. Add in a few knobby and multicolored gourds, dried cornstalks, and fall foliage, and you’re well on your way to an epic fall scene.'

4. Style your space with pretty felt pumpkin decorations

You don't need real pumpkins to create a beautiful display, consider using handcrafted pumpkins instead. There's plenty to choose from – plastic, ceramic, wooden or felt.

How to decorate a mantel for Halloween

Decorating a mantel for Halloween isn't just about finding the right decorations, but also finding an elegant balance of items that create an eye-catching focal point with a theme. The aim is to decorate tastefully for Halloween while maintaining the ghoulish fun of this holiday.

1. Employ a festive wall display

A wall decoration can be a great statement piece to elevate the items on the mantel piece and create a coherent look. There are so many different ways you can do this, from finding a festive garland like this Halloween garland from Anthropologie (above, $58), hanging some Halloween-themed art, using a gothic wreath, to draping a thematic garland or lights over a mirror.

'My favorite Halloween mantel decor is a dramatically colored wreath hung centrally above a fireplace,' says Lucy Searle, Global Editor in Chief of Homes & Gardens. 'I tend to take a deep green base, remove any fall decor from it, and then add in dark-colored foliage from the garden, favoring perennials in deep purple and brown. Only once Halloween is over do I begin to add foliage with berries otherwise it will feel too Christmassy. 

'A monotone wreath in a dark color is simple, easy to create, but can look spookily stylish.'

2. Find pumpkin decor that suits your style

As one of the most popular Halloween decorations, pumpkins can be a great fail-safe option when it comes to decorating your mantel, and alongside the classic orange pumpkin, there are so many different designs and styles of pumpkin decorations to coordinate with the style of your space, whether that be rustic, modern or classic. 

Find a range of different-sized pumpkins or pumpkin decorations in slightly different colors and shapes and create a tasteful, layered display with around three different pumpkins, depending on their size and type. These teak pumpkins from Anthropologie ($28.00 – $68.00, above) are a great example. Alternatively, use one as an elegant stand-alone piece alongside another decoration such as a candle.

3. Integrate natural elements

You can incorporate eeirie seasonal foliage to your mantel display. Decorate with dried flowers, autumn leaves, or even twisted branches to balance the appearance of other artificial items, adding an organic touch to make your Halloween decor feel less staged and more integrated into your home. Using faux options can also be effective for creating this effect. These elements can add a touch of dark elegance to your display.

Jenifer Ebert, digital editor at Homes & Gardens comments, 'Sometimes one oversized, shapely, bare branch that is placed either placed in a vase centrally, fanning outwards or to one side and fanning across the mantelpiece is more effective and stylish as Halloween mantel decor than a series of smaller foliage displays.

'Lighting the branch from beneath will throw shadows and shapes up onto the wall above which will heighten the Halloween effect,' Jenifer continues.

'If you can't find anything suitable in your yard, there are plenty of faux buys, such as the ones listed below, and even if you do find something that's not quite right, you can always spray it to match your theme colors. I like to use spray paints such as this Ultra Cover Flat Spray Paint from Walmart.'

4. Stick to a theme

For an enthralling mantel that feels intentional, rather than just a collection of Halloween decor, try to stick to a singular theme. It could be as simple as choosing a color scheme – such as using blacks, purple and green, or sticking to the classic orange and black – or more nuanced, like creating a theme-based story. 

It can be fun to get creative with your Halloween mantel display by choosing decorations that tell a story, such as a haunted forest complete with miniature trees, creepy houses, owl figurines and more.

'While it might be tempting to include every Halloween trinket you have, a more unified theme often has a greater visual impact,' advises interior designer, Sonia Navarro. 'Whether it’s witches, haunted houses, or simply a color scheme like black and gold, sticking to a specific theme will make your mantel decor look well-planned and cohesive.

'Use your theme as a guide for shopping or crafting additional items to complete your mantel. For instance, if you're going with a witch theme, DIY potion bottles and witch hats can add a personal and thematic touch.'

5. Create an illuminating display with lights and candles

Halloween lights and candles are not only aesthetically a great choice that gives you the freedom to choose gothic, ornate, elegant, or thematic, but they are also key to creating a spooky, dramatic glow.

'Tactical lighting on your mantel can have a striking visual impact. I tend not to light my Halloween wreath, but instead use non-flame candles on the mantelpiece beneath it. This throws shadows up onto the wreath, and creates a more atmospheric effect,' says Lucy Searle.

If you want a low-cost and creative way to display your Halloween candles, you can paint wine bottles with matte-black spray paint. Once dry, choose interestingly shaped candles in Halloween colors to put into the bottleneck to place on your mantel. 

6. Use layering for depth and dimension

'One of the most effective ways to create an eye-catching Halloween mantel is to work with layers,' recommends interior designer, Sonia Navarro. 'Start with a base layer of fabric or paper in Halloween hues like black, orange, or purple. Then, add objects of varying heights like candle holders, pumpkins, or spooky figurines to create depth. Lastly, hang something eye-catching like a wreath, garland, or string of lights at the back to pull it all together.

'You can add more dimension by using mirrors or reflective surfaces to enhance the lighting and give the illusion of more space.' 

Ralph Abundo at Canberra Bond Cleaning leaves us with one last piece of advice: 'Choose between a balanced symmetrical arrangement or an eclectic, asymmetrical setup, depending on your preferred aesthetic. Both approaches can create an eye-catching mantel design.'
