This year’s Kips Bay was ‘New York’ to its bones. Across all six floors, the rooms captured the grit and glamour of both its prime Greenwich Village setting – a storied 1839 Georgian townhouse overlooking Washington Square Park – and the infectious energy of the city more broadly.

Maybe it was the addition of new art curator Gay Gassmann, whose curation of all-American works traded the whimsical, if somewhat unrealistic, staircases of years past for more convincing, artwork-lined transitional spaces. Or perhaps it was the fact that some familiar Show House names made way for new talents who mined the city itself for material, with references spanning New York’s louchely idealized Studio 54 past to the brickish reds of the house itself.

Either way, one could imagine a real, unimpeachably cool New Yorker actually living in any of these 22 rooms. And from those 22 rooms, these are the five interior trends I predict will define 2027 in New York City and beyond.

1. Teal + Red

Few things are more ‘New York’ than brick, a building block of this historic home and a color that proved perfect fodder for minty blue-green. The pairing appeared across more than a handful of rooms, so much so that I asked whether it was a coordinated effort. (It wasn’t.)

Eve Jean Interiors made a rich, teal-toned Kohler toilet and sink set the crown jewels of her opulent ‘Le Boudoir’ powder room, juxtaposed against a veiny marble backsplash from Artistic Tile, brick-toned limewash, and Secret Silhouettes panoramique by Arte Wallcovering, which brought a fiery, painterly quality to soft chenille.

Just upstairs, it was impossible to miss the opaque-and-translucent crystalline combination in the Patagonia Quartzite countertop chosen by Bilotta Kitchen & Home, echoed by a line of Kooij’s 3D-printed ‘Chubby’ stools upholstered in patterned teal.

And on Tyler Banken’s outdoor patio, that same cool, sea-moss blue-green drew the eye down the long, almost bowling-alley-like sightline of level one toward tonal striped tile and a star-dotted backsplash, quietly tempering the imposing exterior wall made of – you guessed it – brick.

We already knew this ‘Tiffany’ family was trending (Matthieu Blazy’s S/S 26 Chanel collection, NYC street style, new drops from heritage home brands like Le Creuset), so if you’re wondering whether it has legs into 2027, 1) the answer is yes, and 2) the secret to making it stick might be a striking, so-wrong-it’s-right pairing that’s arguably in bad taste, but even better for it.

2. Upholstery Is an Extension of the Closet

Amid the moody, art-lined drama of Dunnam Zerbini Design’s eighteen-foot-ceilinged 'Velvet Hour Lounge,' which included a ceramic-coated metal mesh fireplace by Scott Strickstein and towering two-handled vessels I swore might be taller than me, a pair of low-slung metal armchairs caught my eye.

They were fairly unassuming, save for their clay-pink upholstery by Paris-based Karin Sajo, whose background in couture-grade textiles showed in the three-dimensional florals embroidered across the surface, as if the chairs themselves were abloom. I couldn’t help thinking what an exquisite coat it would make for a season; the joy of kicking back in a runway-rivaling seat, however, is forever.

Another fashionable chair appeared on level four in a bathroom by Robbins Architecture, where a white tweed-upholstered perch near the bath reminded me an awful lot of a vintage Chanel jacket I never inherited. Ditto the vanity, where veiny marble, fluted glass, and fine linen drapery riffed on the lightweight layering of Miuccia Prada, the team told me.

And in the aptly named ‘After Dark’ room by Erik Gensler of EZG Design, which harkened back to the nocturnal glamour of Greenwich Village circa 1970, furniture was clad in animal, abstract, and geometric prints. The expressive, serendipitously sleazy combinations felt closer to a gaggle of insider Manhattanites getting dressed for a big night out than decorating a patio.

Amazing upholstery isn’t new at this level of design. What was fresh, though, was how much these rooms borrowed from the act of getting dressed. Fabric, pattern, tailoring, and embellishment felt like an extension of the most enviable, ready-for-anything closet on earth.

3. The Tassel Takeover

The most ubiquitous accessory at Kips Bay might only run you about $5.

Tassels were everywhere in this year’s Show House, forming floor-skimming fringe on a pair of metal sconces in an alpaca-lined, pleated-ceiling bathroom by Emily Del Bello Interiors, and pinched bullion fringe along the bottom of a button-tufted moss-green sofa in Peter Dunham’s striped bedroom.

Though I was mostly taken by the necklace-like effortlessness with which they were styled. In Eve Jean Interiors’ Le Boudoir, one was casually looped over a Duet Passage mixed-metal doorknob by Lo & Co. Up on Nicole Fisher’s rooftop patio, tassel ties gathered floral jacquard outdoor curtains draped around an impressively opulent, indoor-looking outdoor bar, crowned by an outdoor Baccarat chandelier I will never stop thinking about. More hung from either side of the Olive Ateliers Juliet Chairs surrounding the scene.

Obviously, these designers weren’t reaching for $5 tassels. But it’s worth noting that this is a very expensive-looking touch that, in the scheme of everything I saw, costs almost nothing. I found some fairly fabulous contenders at Walmart. So, don't wait till 2027; loop tassels around curtain ties, doorknobs, the backs of dining chairs, or any lonely hook in need of some Deco-style swank, stat!

4. Fairytale Floral Lighting

It was pretty much a floral fête across all six floors, but most striking were the examples that found life beyond standard wallpaper and upholstery plays and into lighting.

Sconces sprouted as cast-glass floral Leighton fixtures by Visual Comfort in collaboration with Kate Spade, flanking the mirror for the perfect selfie moment in Eve Jean Interiors’ Le Boudoir, to, on the more minimalist end, a solo floral fixture matching the organic bathroom by Robbins Architecture. The chandelier department went colossal with Grietje Schepers’ otherworldly, ribbon-like florals hanging sinuously overhead like a giant art mobile in the Velvet Hour Lounge.

Still, I found it freshest when the florals seemed to actually belong in their environments. Like in Aamir Khandwala Interior Design’s surrealist ‘The Secret Garden,’ where real moss and leafy plants appeared to surface from the home’s brick walls, creating convincing scenery for a floral pendant light by the befittingly whimsical Katie Stout. Or in KKB Interiors’ sweet floral-on-floral-on-floral bedroom, a love letter from interior designer Kylie K. Bass to her daughter and essentially a little girl’s dream in soft pinks, an enchantingly twisting iron bed frame, and embroidered demi-sheer drapery.

For every floral detail across the ceiling medallion, bedding, wallpaper, and otherwise, another seemed to bloom from a light fixture. A hyper-realistic Art Nouveau table lamp sat bedside, a playful petal-shaped floor lamp rose nearby, and a sculptural flush mount crowned the space. Which, despite being dreamed up for a child, proved to still be my dream as an adult.

5. The Occupied Interior

Drip coffee on the desk. Unopened mail. Cigarette-butt-swamped ashtrays in every corner. It’s not a mess; they’re signs of life. And in this year’s Show House, a seemingly gritty F-you to AI, the more real, the better.

That was certainly the case in Chad Dorsey’s moody office, imagined for an editor circa 1960. The room’s external world reflected a rich inner one, filled with exotic masks, bonsai trees, and eclectic, worldly objects staged as though their owner had just stepped out for a moment, for reasons unknown. Hence the Iowa Writers’ Workshop canvas tote hung not on a hook but perplexingly from the side of an armchair, books piled haphazardly beneath the multi-drawer credenza, and chatter coming from the birdcage.

That sense of accumulation continued with tiny art displayed in odd places: directly between the partitioned bookcase in KKB Interiors’ pattern-filled bathroom nook, asymmetrically across the folding panels in Erik Gensler’s After Dark room, and in a technicolor cluster against similarly chromatic upholstered wall stripes in Peter Dunham’s four-poster primary bedroom. Old-timey smoking accessories, sculptural busts, and seemingly misplaced artifacts turned up just about everywhere.

So, great news for messy people. Organizing a little less might actually be the chicest styling move for 2027.

Plaid bedding has historically been an ick for anyone with an ounce of style prowess outside the confines of an après-winter cabin. But Brooklinen just made plaid bed sheets actually pretty for 2026, and I’m happy to report it doesn’t give ‘lumberjack’ in the slightest.

Because if we think of fall color trends for 2026, the Washed European Linen Duvet Set, in a hot-off-the-press ‘Sunflower’ Sunset Check,' is a dead ringer for ‘straw yellow,’ the inviting summer-to-autumn bridge we called out in our recent color trend report. Think wheat fields, late-season sunlight, and all the looks and feels of an idyllic New England autumnal harvest.

‘If I were to choose a color for fall, it would be a dusty, sun-washed yellow,’ says Danu Kennedy, partner at Parts and Labor Design and co-founder of Known Work Studio. ‘Yellow holds onto some of the warmth and optimism of summer, but when it’s muted and a little muddied, it takes on a much softer, more grounding quality.’ Off the heels of a fun but adventure-packed summer of flights, boats, trains, and cars, it's exactly what we want in a fall bedroom.

Balance, movement, precision – these principles define the game of tennis as much as they speak to the art of interior design. And for athlete-turned-designer Venus Williams, they’re the hallmarks of her debut collection with Crate & Barrel.

Though many of us recognize Venus for her accolades on the court, she’s just as much of a force with her interior design firm V Starr – where she fuses her knowledge of tennis with her design sensibilities to develop interior schemes that are as thoughtfully driven as her hundred-mile-per-hour serve. This Crate & Barrel collection is Venus' latest endeavor – just after her recent stint at the US Open – and in a way, it’s a synthesis of her passions, sophisticatedly and tastefully joined together.

‘The inspiration came from a lifetime of loving design,’ Venus tells Homes & Gardens about the 128-piece collection, complete with everything from lighting and accent chairs to pillows and even kids' decor. ‘I’ve always been drawn to pieces that feel artful, architectural, and timeless; pieces that make a statement and that you can envision living with forever,’ she continues.

Venus drew from a vast range of influences to develop the range. You’ll notice natural woods and earth tones that speak to Venus’ passion for mid-century style, as well as organic curves and sculptural forms that reflect her love of Brazilian modernism. The collection's sophisticated, quietly luxurious undertone speaks to Venus’ appreciation for Italian design, having been inspired by it on a trip to Italy with Crate & Barrel’s Head of Design, Sebastian Brauer.

Tennis, of course, is a central theme of the range. Though some obvious references are evident – the ball-clad Motion Stone Pendant and the lined Court Throw Pillow Cover being two of them – the sport’s inclusion is a bit more nuanced than that.

‘In tennis, precision matters, but so does knowing when not to overdo something. I approached this collection in a similar way,’ Venus muses. There’s a strong push and pull between balance and restraint through the collection’s details – for instance, the curves and the angles, the softness and the rigidity, and even the sophistication and the playful edge. Getting that balance right, according to Venus, makes the collection feel ‘intentional and artful, and still comfortable.’

Venus and her design team worked with a range of materials and textures to make this collection come to life. You’ll find everything from smooth Italian marbles and grainy oak woods to nubby chenille fabrics and even high-gloss finishes. Consider it Venus’ masterclass in mixing, matching, and thoughtful contrast.

As for color, the collection’s palette is relaxed and sophisticated, composed of rich browns, maroons, ivories, greens, and soft tans. These shades are a nod to traditional tennis colors, but also give the collection its sense of longevity and timelessness. Clearly, Venus wants these pieces to stay desirable in your home for years to come.

On late-summer Manhattan streets, whether you were a certified Matthieu Blazy Chanel stan or a total non-fashion person simply looking to escape summer’s all-black uniform, it seemed every New Yorker was sporting a splash of teal, turquoise, or, most fancifully, ‘Tiffany’ blue. But with Labor Day officially behind us, can this month-long aquatic obsession make an equally splashy entrance into fall?

At home, the answer is a resounding yes – not only for its bijou pedigree, but for how neatly it lifts fall’s color palette. ‘Tiffany blue feels especially relevant right now because it sits at the intersection of optimism, nostalgia and luxury,’ says Fairfield County-based interior designer Prudence Bailey, who loves pairing it with decidedly un-summery textures like velvet, mohair, lacquer, and patterned wallpaper.

‘After years of restrained neutrals, I think people are craving color again, but they still want it to feel elevated. This shade does both. It’s joyful and fresh, yet it still carries that sense of polish and sophistication we associate with Tiffany & Co.’

And that polish can take plenty of forms: splashed across the stove with Le Creuset’s new ‘Riviera’ colorway, launched earlier this year; set on the dining table via Ginori 1735’s electric riff, edged in hand-painted gold; or brought to the sofa with Soho Home’s rich geometric velvet and fringe.

‘Pair Tiffany blue with olive, mustard, or maroon, and you won’t look back,’ insists Jonathan Adler Design Studio Creative Director Benjamin Brougham. ‘Not only do these colors work for fall; I think they work even better for fall. They become even more interesting when you strip away their summery associations and set them against richer, warmer colors and materials.’

Then again, Benjamin and his team recently ignored the supporting colors altogether, deciding to ‘double down’ on turquoise with a full-on kitchen color drench. The high-jewelry references remained obvious. ‘We paired it with an antique mirror backsplash and a large brass chandelier. Instant jewel box!’

For most of us, inhabiting a Nancy Meyers universe is little more than a pipe dream. But if you’re Annie Meyers-Shyer, her daughter, you actually grew up in one. Better known as @ThisOakHouse on Instagram, the fashion-industry insider-turned-renovator has spent years thoughtfully revamping an inherited 1946 Los Angeles Colonial-Dutch home. Where Nancy Meyers might reach for a classic pinstripe cushion, Annie’s takes a more aged, artistic turn in ivory and faded blue ikat. Thumbprints on ceramics? But of course. Like Annie’s nitty-gritty deep dive into the renovation of her historic home, the collection feels personal, collected, and effortlessly lived-in.

What makes a house a home? ‘You do,’ says Annie. ‘The books you read, the family photos that adorn your shelves, the souvenirs from trips that hold sentimental meaning, and the little things your kids make with their whole heart are what give a home its personality. And don’t save your favorite pieces for special occasions. Light the candles, fill the vase with flowers, and keep the throw where you actually use it. A home should feel lived in, not staged.’

Despite coming from a behemoth retailer – and starting at just $25 – none of these pieces feel staged, either. They’re made for candle wax and crumbs, for flowers and family, for getting horizontal on the sofa – just with a little more Nancy Meyers-level cinematography. Great taste, it seems, really does run in the family.

When you think about refreshing your home for fall, you probably imagine making small decor swaps, like trading summer throw pillows for tonal and cozy alternatives, incorporating foliage through garlands and wreaths, or lighting candles with seasonal scents. It’s a bad day to be a big light in 2026 – unless, of course, you’re a multi-shade chandelier, which, as a slew of recent interiors projects would have it, is about the only acceptable living room lighting right now.

One thing about me: I can be very picky about lighting. It’s an essential element in a room’s design scheme; a detail that creates comfort, sets the mood, and provides practical illumination, all at the same time.

Because of my particular taste in lighting ideas, I usually gravitate towards expensive styles that are way out of my price range. But recently, I came across an outlier – a $30 lamp that impressed me so much more than the high-end designs I have saved on my web browser.

We’ve survived the dog days of summer. The days are less sweltering; mornings and nights are refreshingly crisp. But before you retreat indoors and surrender the patio until spring, we have a precious few weeks of prime outdoor-hosting weather still on the calendar. Fall brunches! Back-to-school-related gatherings! Dinner outside without immediately sweating through your clothes! There’s life in the old patio yet.

If you’re anything like exuberantly maximalist interior designer Corey Damen Jenkins, for whom the indoor-outdoor thing isn’t some belabored-to-death design cliché but a genuine non-negotiable, you already have a game plan.

‘This is the moment I start layering back in the things that make a space feel enveloping.’ Corey tells Homes & Gardens, having recently done this exact outdoor entertaining prep in his Chesapeake Bay Colonial Revival project, featured in his book Design Reimagined.

The candy-pink cushions you bought back in May were cute, but autumnal outdoor living calls for moodier details. ‘I’ll swap out anything too lightweight or summer-breezy for cushions and throws in a richer, more saturated palette. Deep greens, ochres, a touch of chocolate or burnt umber – the same way I’d adjust a room’s accent colors for a new season indoors,’ he explains. ‘Textiles shift with the temperature too – lighter linens and cottons can give way to heavier, richly textured weaves.'

And since the sun, rudely, is clocking out earlier, supplemental outdoor lighting makes both you and your patio feel warmer as the days shorten. ‘The biggest shift is that evenings arrive earlier and cooler now, so lighting has to work harder and warmer. Where I’d let a space carry itself on natural light through August, I’m now bringing in lanterns and hurricane candles earlier in the evening, and swapping anything stark or cool-toned for warmer bulbs.’

It’s a relatively tiny tweak that drives home, pun intended, that decidedly indoor feeling Corey’s outdoor spaces are known for. To him, a patio should be every bit as layered, interesting, and nuanced as your best indoor room – not some half-baked purgatory where design standards go to die once waterproofing enters the equation. And that continuity always starts with a clear conversation between both sides of the sliding glass.

‘What actually creates cohesion between the two is letting the site do some of the talking – pulling color and material cues from what’s already there – like the stone and the landscaping around the home – rather than trying to recreate the same exact look of the interior,’ says Corey. ‘When a space is clearly responding to its environment, it reads as intentional and specific, which does more to tie indoors and outdoors together than any matching patterns or styles could.’

But don't forget the big 'P' – Personality – which ultimately makes a patio a place to be. Who wants to eat alfresco in an accessories-less space? Not any magpie that I know. ‘Weaving in a meaningful piece or detail that nods to how they actually live and plan to use the space elevates it well past the standard outdoor furniture package – something as simple as a well-proportioned table sized for the way a family actually gathers, rather than a matching lounge set.’

‘I treat outdoor spaces with the same design rigor as any interior room, which means finding real solutions for bringing indoor-caliber pieces outside, not just weatherproof stand-ins. The elements force a kind of creative problem-solving, and I’ve learned to treat that as an invitation rather than a limitation.'

‘The client had spent years amassing antiques, and my job was to give that collection a cohesive home, straight through to the veranda,' Corey adds of his Chesapeake project. 'We mounted antique blue-and-white porcelain plates onto custom metal grilles and fixed them to the exterior brick walls to create a sophisticated look you’d expect indoors, engineered to survive outside. Her vintage ginger jars found a place outside too, weighted with rocks and sand to hold their ground even in the wind. It made the home feel like one continuous, personal narrative rather than an indoor story with an unrelated outdoor postscript.’

And that’s the secret to a less snoozey outdoor setup. Since everyone has a unique indoor story of their own, yours needn’t necessarily involve (outdoor-friendly) porcelain plates bolted to brick. If you love antique-style upholstery, translate that into an all-weather floral sofa. If you love horses and have saddle leathers lining your living room, why wouldn’t a little stone stallion keep your plant children company?

Whatever your particular decorative affliction, let it outside. The best outdoor spaces for any sort of revelry – parties, meals, and general hanging around – actually feel like the people who live there. A couple of odd, personal accessories will get you closer to that elusive ‘designer’ touch.

Of course, a well-dressed patio can still be a terrible party host, and there’s one mistake Corey sees all the time that seriously stymies the flow of a gathering. Fortunately, it’s the only part of the patio plan that requires absolutely no shopping whatsoever to fix.‘Scattered seating with no real purpose behind it – furniture pushed to the edges of the space, a table shoved in a corner, nothing arranged with people actually gathering in mind,’ he says, is the ultimate outdoor entertaining faux pas. ‘It leaves guests with nowhere obvious to settle, so they end up bunched around whatever surface has food or drinks on it.’

It’s an uncomfortable scene we know all too well: twelve people packed sardine-close around the crudités while an entire sofa sits empty six feet away. Corey’s trick is essentially a little social grease by way of furniture. ‘The fix is treating the layout the way you would a living room built for parties – creating two or three distinct groupings instead of one catch-all arrangement, so there’s a cozier spot for quieter conversation and a larger one for the bigger crowd. Anchor each grouping with something to gather around, like a table or a fire feature, so people have a reason to land there rather than just stand.’

And wherever they land, give guests a good reason to want to stay, beyond the fact they’ve already enjoyed a couple of aperitifs. If you’re yet to invest in the perfect outdoor furniture (it’s never too late in the season!), Corey’s indoor wishlist doesn’t change with the lack of a roof: craftsmanship, a great silhouette, and non-basic, actually enticing fabric are all a must.

‘Outdoor furniture has long suffered from a kind of resignation, as if comfort and beauty have to be sacrificed the moment you step outside,’ he laments. ‘I don’t accept that – every piece of furniture in an outdoor space should still have presence, still invite you to sit down and stay awhile, whether it’s in a sunroom or on a patio.’

That's pretty much Corey’s whole fall patio strategy: stop treating the patio like a patio. Steal the best stuff from indoors – the flattering light, the weightier textiles, the weird little objects with stories, the furniture arranged in a way that actually makes sense – and take it outside. A cushion swap here, a lantern there, maybe a couple of horses guarding the steps if the spirit moves you.

Summer may be over. Patio season, however, is not.

You know ‘unexpected red,’ the theory that a singular jolt of the hue can wake up any room, but have you heard of ‘unexpected chrome’? Target’s latest portable lamp has all the old-timey library trappings, down to the fluted dome shade, in a surprising silvery finish. It’s given me fodder for a new theory, and possibly the coolest thing you could put on a coffee table this fall.

It's an odd pairing on paper. The Double Metal Portable Lamp taps two of 2026’s biggest lighting trends at once: anything old (vintage, thrifted, scoured, sourced) and chrome, more often the domain of ultra-minimal, super-sleek, vaguely Scandi design. We almost never see the two together. Hence: unexpected chrome.

A flash of silver on dark wood does something surprisingly striking as the days slowly darken. Brushed nickel catches and throws light like a mirror, a tactic I’ve tried and loved myself (there’s a chrome tray sitting on my entry table as I write). I find the effect more ethereal and nuanced than the, at this point, clichéd-to-death pop of red.

This unusual lighting is even better if you’re a vintage person. Amid all the gold and brass you’ve spent years collecting: bam – silver. It’s enough of a foil to feel fresh without looking like it wandered in from someone else’s house. Mixing metals, by the way, is not the faux pas you think it is. Designers I’ve interviewed assure me the tension only makes a room look richer. 'Brass overload,' on the other hand? Quite tired.

This is chrome for people who aren’t really chrome people. It has the old-world silhouette for anyone finding brass a little too trad, without going full space-age chrome for those of us not quite ready to identify with the hardcore Brutalist wave.

If you’re also under the spell of Amazon Prime’s summery new melodrama Sterling Point, you’ve probably spent the last several weeks researching summer homes in Canada’s lakeside ‘cottage country’ Muskoka, wondering if you, too, should learn to canoe across those idyllic waters and, more likely than not, how to keep the lakeside aesthetic lingering at home for fall.

‘The lakeside aesthetic doesn’t require much to transition into fall, as it already incorporates mixed materials like stone, rough-sawn wood, and layered textures,’ says Atlanta-based interior designer Liz Williams. Like her recent Lake Martin project, it toes two worlds: the swanky details of the upper crust there just for the summer, and the cozily layered lives of locals who call it home year-round. ‘A base of warm neutrals always elevates soft blues and pale greens, adding richness to homes designed in this style, keeping them both casual and luxurious.'

If the lakeside aesthetic were a brand, it would be heritage homeware label GreenRow. Its newly redesigned lakefront cottage at Serenbe is essentially the look in a nutshell, reflecting the rugged landscape with handwoven rattan, antique floral wallpaper clashing charmingly against yellow plaid drapes, and patterned sink skirts hiding old bathroom pipes. And if it were a designer? Heidi Caillier. To the untrained eye, this trend is quaint. But like the vintage Huber Scoop chair Annie scored from the thrift, it’s actually quite expensive.

While most of us were first exposed to this golden slice of Ontario in a summer setting, nearly every hue on screen is even more apropos of autumn decor. ‘Since the colors of the lakeside aesthetic are typically greens, blues, and browns – colors we see outside – it is easy to transition into fall by adding hints of complementary warm tones, like rust and ochre,’ says Liz. ‘The simple, clean lines of this style can transition easily into fall with the addition of soft, colored, textured throws and rustic elements,’ she adds.

The trick, then, is not to autumn-ify it to death. Keep mirroring the landscape’s richness with crinkled cotton throws at the foot of the bed, heirloom wood (à la Pierce & Ward’s West Elm collab), and the ultimate analog accessory: a handmade broom hanging from a designated hook. Because, unlike the wannabes, you actually live here.

Not all of us are fortunate enough to inherit a charming waterfront cottage (or the lush, piney island it sits on, for that matter), so these 20 lakeside-inspired finds will have to do.
