Best known for his timeless, old-meets-new approach to interior design, Jeremiah Brent has made quite the name for himself among the style set already. But since his debut on Queer Eye, that admiration has gone global as he took his design flair to Vegas, and our TV screens, this season.

While each and every makeover had its own fair share of tear-jerking moments, (it turns out Jeremiah's a big crier) there was one key takeaway that stood out to me from Jeremiah's impressive home transformations that, as I undertake my own home renovation journey, has truly resonated with me.

My Biggest Takeaway From Watching Jeremiah on Queer Eye

Already winning over fans of the show, including those who were steadfast in missing Brent's predecessor Bobby Berk, Jeremiah's transformations have been getting some serious viral love.

And while they're undoubtedly impressive – we're talking real marble countertops, canopy ceilings, and hidden TVs – there was a big lesson that I've really learned from his approach to these life-changing makeovers.

Jeremiah's designs are undeniably beautiful, but they're also profoundly meaningful, reflecting the unique lives and personalities of the people he designed for.

In Episode 1, for example, Jeremiah is redesigning the home of former Show Girl Paula who 'talks with color and energy and passion, but the space she's living in does not reflect that,' says Jeremiah on the show.

'What's really powerful about design is that it articulates who you are visually,' he explains about his approach to imbuing a sense of self and personality into every space.

In Paula's finished home, which he decorated in an enlivening spring palette with displays of crystals (a love that Brent and Paula both share) and plenty of family photos – 'you live here!' he explains.

Good design starts with authenticity. When your home reflects who you are, it becomes a space that not only looks good but also feels good to live in.

In Episode 2, busy mom Nicole is treated to a beautiful open plan redesign that 'shifted the way the whole room is orientated so you're always part of the connection,' Jeremiah explained. 'I wanna help her walk into that space and have a real sense of ownership.'

'The interesting thing about your home is that it always tells a story – good and bad,' he says in Episode 3, where he takes magician Clyde antique shopping.

'Antique shopping is my absolute favorite thing in the entire world – it is the perfect way to get to know somebody through the things that they value, what they connect to and Clyde strikes me as somebody who wants to bring things into his home that tell his story.'

This idea of imbuing spaces with more individuality really struck a chord with me, especially as I think about the ways I have approached my own home – and where I’ve perhaps missed opportunities to let my personality shine through.

In Episode 6 – a real tear-jerker – we meet single mother Jen’ya. Before decorating, Jeremiah had her come into the space and write motivational words on the walls that helped her reflect on her faith and her desires for the space. He designed her a large church-inspired cabinetry with arched detailing that hides the TV (which previously sat broken on the floor) and, as she enters her new bedroom sanctuary, Jen'ya falls to her knees and sobs at her new cozy and cocooning space. It's a real 'tug on the heartstrings' moment.

Additionally, his approach to a really good clear-out is something we can all learn from as we set about creating new and refreshed spaces in our homes this New Year. 'Go through things and think about what is serving you,' Jeremiah advised on the show, saying 'You've got to make room for the future.'

In Episode 7, Jeremiah treads carefully with how to walk Chris through the journey of letting go of his late father's belongings. 'He was looking for the opportunity and the permission to let go.' In a further cathartic move, Chris and Jeremiah knock down a stud wall together, totally opening up the home to make it feel bright, airy, and peppered with personal touches and mementos to his dad.

'There's nothing better than walking into a home and it being a part of you,' Jeremiah explains to mother Sara in Episode 9, whose home gets an entire remodel with bedrooms for her 3 daughters and a private master bedroom for mom, who used to sleep on the floor. 'It's the fanciest house I've ever seen,' says her daughter.

Taking to Instagram, Jeremiah explains that 'Connection will always be at the heart of design for me.'

When it comes to a strongly veined kitchen countertop, few people are better qualified to talk about it than interior designer Jeremiah Brent, who made the bold and incredibly successful decision to use Calcutta marble throughout his scheme.

'It is hands down one of my favorite marbles and something that I really had to advocate for with my husband because it's too busy for him. But for me personally – and I know this is very controversial – marbles are never too busy,' he explains in the reel.

Even though marble has been a staple in popular kitchen designs over the years, most people tend to lean towards the simpler, quieter options with minimal veining. But alone, it can feel less interesting and lack personality.

'The biggest mistake that people make with their marble is playing it too safe,' says Jeremiah. 'Everything is so simple and quiet and it's really beautiful, so if you're going to go quieter with your marble, play around with an etched detail, play around with a double OG edge, or do something around the trim so it adds just enough personality.'

But it's not just the aesthetic elements that can make people wary of introducing natural marble countertops. There's no denying the fact that it's not so durable, which is why so many people prefer to use a marble-like material that's made of something more hard-wearing.

For Jeremiah, though, it's those imperfections and the way the marble becomes stained and chipped over time that gives it character. 'I think marble gets a bad rap for not being as durable as most people would like, but for me, the most beautiful stones are the ones that show the history of the people who live there,' he says.

'I like the stains and I like the wine spills and I like the way the lemon stays that you cut making a margarita that one time you had everybody over and laughed and stayed up too late. So for me, it turns into a tapestry of your family.'

1. Rearrange and repurpose

'Shift things around in your home,' Jeremiah advises in the video, where he suggests curating your art for fall.

Look to shop your own home to avoid needing to purchase anything new. Rearrange art from other rooms in your home and repurpose them somewhere new. Perhaps a gallery wall feels a bit outdated, so you could break it down and use the individual works of art to create new, dynamic vignettes in different spaces.

The same can be said for larger pieces. Take the cozy rug from your bedroom and try it out in the living room if the colors work to add a nod to the fall season. Drag an armchair closer to the fire and add a side table to create a cozy cafe corner. While small decor items like foliage and gourds can be scattered throughout the home to bring some new season cheer.

2. Soften the lighting

An often overlooked seasonal swap is lighting ideas. We're sure you're already leaning in with a few fall-scented candles that give off a warming, soft glow but Jeremiah wants you to take that one step further.

'Change the lighting,' he suggests. 'Play around with different levels and bring in a lower wattage for a little bit more moody experience.'

A look inside Nate and Jeremiah's media room

From the cameras left scattered around the space (which Jeremiah says is his 'daughter in a nutshell') to each piece of furniture, every element of the family's media room divulges a new detail about their lives and personal histories. 'Everything in this space has a story,' says Jeremiah.

The designer recalls that he first came across a neutral-colored, tufted armchair that now sits in the media room's corner when meeting his now husband, Nate, for the first time. As they were talking, Jeremiah was sitting in the chair – which was leather at the time. It's now been recovered, and has moved with them to this home, but still brings back fond memories. Another chair in the space also evokes happy nostalgia for Jeremiah.

'This Bugatti chair was something that I'd been coveting and I wanted forever, and my husband got it for me for my 30th birthday,' Jeremiah says, trying to remember exactly which occasion he received the generous gift. 'But everything in here serves a purpose, whether it's emotionally or for function.'

On one full wall of the stylish room, a built-in bookshelf unit contains what Jeremiah refers to as 'the timeline of our entire life.' With carefully placed picture lights, molded detailing, and a vast collection of books, accessories, and more, the designer says it represents 'everything that we find beautiful, everything that we find interesting, people we've loved, people we've lost. It really is kind of this living thing in our house that always changes and completely evolves.'

The centerpiece of the bookshelves is a one-of-a-kind mirror, hung directly on the shelves. Ornately decorated with shells and a carved metal mask, it makes an unexpected statement in the space. 'This mirror we've had forever – we got it when we lived in LA. I love it. It's so opposite of anything that we normally gravitate towards, but I adore it,' says Jeremiah.

Combining Nate's anti-trend, transitional style with Jeremiah's warm contemporary blend isn't always easy – they have disagreed before. But this space blends the two looks with ease, showing off the best of both.

'I think this room is really interesting because it kind of sums up the two of us in a really interesting way,' says Jeremiah. 'Everything contemporary is definitely things that I love and have been drawn to, and then everything that has a little bit of a traditional layer is my husband's. Everything reminds me of something.'

Jeremiah, known for creating timeless interiors for firm Jeremiah Brent Design and designing one-of-a-kind furniture for homeware brand Atrio, has made quite the name for himself in interior design. Now, he's busier than ever as Queer Eye's new interior design expert, sharing his design wisdom with 'heroes' across the country. With all this design experience under his belt, his opinion is incredibly valuable.

In the caption, 1stDibs says 'if there were a brain we would like to pick, it's the one inside Jeremiah Brent' – and we can't help but agree. Here's what the designer thinks of some of interior designs most controversial trends.

1. Frame TV

The first trend 1stDibs introduces is the frame TV – a TV that converts into a framed piece of art when switched off. Laughing immediately, Jeremiah shares that this design feature nearly caused a rift in his relationship with Queer Eye costar Tan France.

'Tan France got really mad at me about these frame TVs,' says Jeremiah. 'I know it's very controversial. I happen to like them – I have one downstairs in my family room, and I stand by them.'

When styled mindfully, frame TVs can be a high-end asset to a living room design scheme. The average TV isn't very aesthetically pleasing, and if you don't plan on using it very regularly, it might make more sense to hide your TV away in plain sight. Blend one into a larger gallery wall, as in the space pictured above, to add an extra element of disguise.

2. Millenial beige

2024 has proven somewhat of an anti-beige renaissance, (we explore, what color is replacing beige in our separate piece) with 'millennial beige' falling out of style and vibrant colors quickly replacing the shade. This neutral is often seen as boring and bland, but some designers stand by it for its appeal as a solid, classic shade. For Jeremiah, though, millennial beige is an easy 'No, thank you.'

'I'm over it, which I know is very shocking because everybody thinks I only do beige, black and white. But I don't like it. And plus, when I stand next to millennial beige, I just look like a pair of teeth,' he says.

3. Chrome and metallic finishes

Mixing metals in interior design is more on trend than ever, with chrome decor winning the hearts of homeowners and designers alike. Subtle metallic touches are everywhere, and Jeremiah's pared-back designs are no exception.

'I love a chrome and a metallic mixed with a more neutral palette,' he says. 'I think it feels contemporary, and it can feel traditional, so yes please.'

Metal decor doesn't have to be overly modern (or shiny), and even a matte finish will do. Bringing metal and chrome decor into your home adds diverse texture and visual interest, elevating your entire design scheme. 4. Mushroom lamps

Mushroom lamps, named for their unique shape, took the design world by storm a couple of years back – and so far, they don't seem to be going anywhere. But what does Jeremiah think of this much-loved trend?

'The shape really stresses me out. I'll leave it at that,' he says.

5. The big light

'The big light,' or choosing one central, overhead light do the heavy lifting for an entire room, has sparked quite the debate as of late. While some designers (and homeowners) are adamantly against the big light, instead opting for soft, ambient lighting scattered throughout their space, others think there's a time and a place for the overheads. Jeremiah says he can't quite make up his mind.

'This is a hard one because it's like a no, thank you, but also a yes, please. I also love really ambient lighting, but sometimes a room is dark and you need a big light. I'm in the middle,' he says.

6. Monotone rooms

At the mention of monotone rooms, Jeremiah immediately lights up: 'Yes, please the monotone rooms! I can't believe how excited I get about it ... I think it's really beautiful if it's done correctly. Not for everybody, so don't come yell at me.'

Many of Jeremiah's own designs stick to a relatively monotone color palette, seamlessly blending several shades from the same color family. As opposed to a monochrome color scheme, which sticks to the exact same shade throughout, a tonal design scheme allows for a bit more experimentation – all while maintaining a cohesive style and mood.

7. Sock painting

The last trend 1stDibs brings up has made waves on TikTok lately, and it's a bit out of the box: sock painting. Users have taken to the social media platform to show off this furniture painting 'hack,' and are raking in millions of views and thousands of likes.

Painting banisters and intricate furniture with their hands (which they've covered in clean socks), they're impressing some and horrifying others. Jeremiah seems to fall closer to the second camp.

'That's a no, thank you for me. Also, where does the other sock go? I don't get it,' he says.

Jeremiah's selected some timeless trends to get behind, and even though he's found himself at odds with Tan France in the process, his reasoning is sound. Whether you're ready to turn your living room monotone or want to introduce a bit more metal into your dining room design scheme, Jeremiah's opinions won't steer you wrong.

And while there are too many stunning features to count, the design duo's space provides plenty of inspiration if you're at a loss for how to decorate your kitchen counters. Nate, one of interior design's biggest names, and Jeremiah, the newest star of Netflix's Queer Eye, have put their collective design efforts into designing their New York City apartment – a space that blends the pair's signature styles seamlessly. And their kitchen counter styling is just one of many subtle details that makes the home stand out – and stand the test of time.

1. Feature art and family photos

The kitchen may be one of the home's most functional spaces, but that doesn't mean you should hold back with decor that's special to you. The first kitchen counter shot shared by Nate features two framed family photos and a moody landscape painting in a gold, gilded frame. Accompanied by layered lighting and branch of a nearby plant, these personalized touches level up the entire room.

Bringing family photos and other unique-to-you pieces into the kitchen gives it a homey, welcoming feeling that's otherwise hard to achieve. Choose a relatively empty corner and layer in artwork and mementos of your choosing. Not only will you be reminded of your loved ones while you cook up a storm, but visitors will get a glimpse into the moments you most cherish.

2. Keep clear of the sink

While layering on the accessories is well and good, the second photo Nate shared reminds us of an important rule: keep the kitchen sink clear. The last thing you want is a carefully curated vignette getting splashed with suds when it comes time to clear away the dishes.

Take your decor and mementos to the emptier corners of your kitchen, and make sure there's enough room to work in the sink's immediate vicinity. Aside from soap, a sponge, and any other dish implements you use on the daily, there's no need to clutter this high-traffic spot.

3. Think beyond the kitchen

The most stylish kitchens don't just make use of pots and pans for decor – they look beyond the kitchen, and integrate decorative items from across the whole home. In Nate and Jeremiah's home, a small bowl of crystals and geometric objects find starring roles on the countertop, and an impressive candlestick adds some height.

While cutting boards are an easy (and practical) item to layer on the counters, these unconventional add-ons ensure your culinary space is stylish in its own right, and not just leaning on kitchen clichés.

4. Make use of vertical space

Though helpful advice for vignette styling of any kind, Nate and Jeremiah's kitchen counter reminds us that it's always wise to make use of your home's vertical space when designing. Though the pair is especially fortunate to have lofty, expansive skylights in their kitchen space, every kitchen has a bit of vertical space to work with.

A large ceramic pot in the corner holds tall, sprawling branches that lead the eye upwards, and each smaller vignette throughout the space has a considered mix of short, medium and tall objects to choose from. This approach creates depth, and makes the entire room feel larger – a goal nearly all of us have for our spaces.

5. Bring the outdoors in

Interior spaces that include natural elements and bring the outdoors in are charming and cozy, inviting visitors in to enjoy the calm. And though the kitchen is often associated with sleek lines and harsh materials, embracing the great outdoors in your culinary space can lead to great results.

In Nate and Jeremiah's kitchen, plenty of natural light and two sizeable potted plants – combined with the marble's earthy veining – create a nature-inspired space that puts the mind at ease.

By taking vertical space into account and creating characterful vignettes on the kitchen counters, you'll create a culinary space that's anything but boring. On those nights you're dreading making dinner or clearing dishes, you'll have a beautiful environment to lift you right back up.

It's no secret that a kitchen renovation is quite a daunting task. With so many design elements – both functional and stylish – to keep in mind, even the smallest decorating decisions can quickly set your head spinning. And even if you have a clear picture of your dream kitchen, budgetary worries often get in the way. 

While there's plenty available to shop no matter your budget, you might be questioning how much to spend on each element of your kitchen remodel. And if you're unsure about which design features warrant a bit more of a splurge, you're certainly not alone. 

Luckily, world-renowned interior designer Nate Berkus just took to Instagram to share the places he suggests spending a bit more in the kitchen – plus where to hold back. And perhaps unsurprisingly, the antique-loving designer says sourcing vintage goods can take you quite a long way. Here's what Nate recommends.

Nate says there are two main kitchen design elements that deserve a bit more of a splurge: appliances and durable countertop materials. Because these functional features will likely be used on a daily basis, it's best to invest in quality, long-lasting (and trend-defying) products. Nate adds that choosing the 'right' material for your countertops matters less than picking something you're sure to love in the long term.

'You can do it once if you do it right, and you'll always have it. Natural stone, solid surface, it doesn't matter what it is, but if it's something that you really want to live with for 25 years, then make the investment now,' he says in the video.

Although he admits he's not the biggest chef (mentioning that his husband, just-announced Queer Eye star Jeremiah Brent, spends more time cooking), Nate says appliances are another place to put down some cash. According to Nate, the Viking stove in their kitchen is the best Jeremiah's ever worked with, and its customizable color selection meant it found a perfect fit in the couple's sophisticated and sleek kitchen.

As for places to save in the kitchen? Nate says 'everywhere else.' The designer is an antique-sourcing pro, and loves a timeless, transitional design style over trends or fads any day. And though the kitchen probably isn't the first room that comes to mind when you think vintage goods, Nate says there's lots of room to fit previously used items in, even in a culinary space.

In his video, Nate points out small decorative horse figurines and a wooden bowl sitting on a shelf behind the stove, mentioning that they all cost less than $10 at antique stores. Many of the rest of the family's decorative and organizational items came from antiquing adventures – or were simply the results of some good deals.

'The containers that hold the olive oil, some are from Target. Even the container we use to hold our wooden spoons is a wood vase or vessel – I think we found this at an antique shop in Michigan. I want to say it was five bucks,' says Nate.

'Invest in the things that are built in, invest in the things that will really get a lot of use, that you won't be tired of 25 years from now, and everything else, go out, try to find vintage options. But if you can't, just get the best deals,' he continues.

You may not have had a trip to the antique store on your kitchen design to-do list, but with Nate's take, it might be best to head out and see what you can uncover. Not only will you save your money for the kitchen features that matter most, but you'll channel Nate's signature transitional style along the way.

Interior design trends have dictated how our homes look for decades. Just like in the world of fashion those of us who keep a keen eye on trends do have a tendency to often let them dictate our tastes and decisions, sometimes even at the expense of our own personal style.

However, 2024 seems to be the year of the anti-trend. Instead of designing spaces around fleeting looks, so many 'trends' this year are about just leaning into what you love and creating homes filled with personality and character.

The anti-trend concept is nothing new to designer (and soon-to-be Queer Eye presenter) Jeremiah Brent. He's been taking this approach to interior design from the beginning, and it's this concept of designing homes that reflect the people within them that's at the core of his new book – The Space That Keeps You.

H&G sat down with Jeremiah to talk about his new book, plus hear more about why he doesn't think every trend is worth following, which trends he is actually loving right now, and his tips on making a home feel more like you.

'You’ve heard me say it before... worry less about whatever is trending!' starts Jeremiah when asked for his opinion on the popular trends for 2024. 'Yes, it’s fun to see colors, finishes, and time periods in a new light, but everything is in a constant cycle of passing and coming back around. What about the trend of moving past trends?'

'And if I had to pick 'trends' I am loving, it's any trends that have a historical reference. Instagram has also really elevated what ‘Do It Yourself’ can mean within a home. Adding molding, DIY canopy beds, creating plaster art... all of these things turn trends into something that’s personal because you created it with your own two hands.'

'Just avoid buying everything brand new, it can take away from the warmth of your space. Always take your time,' he adds.

When we tentatively broached the topic of 'core' trends (think Barbie-core, cafe-core, etc). Jeremiah was quick to note that he might be an advocate for classic, timeless spaces, but there's still room for these shorter-lived trends that are usually brought about by social media or cultural references of the time. 

'I think there’s some fun to these trends! I love the idea of pulling inspiration for your home from unexpected places – cafés, movie sets, etc. My interiors often reference things that wouldn’t initially be considered ‘home decor’. My advice is to mix the 'cores' and have fun with it. That's where anything original comes from – conflict.'

So what's Jeremiah's advice for embracing interior design trends, while also ensuring a home that never dates? 'If you see a trend that truly reflects what you love, go for it,' he suggests. 'Otherwise, there’s no reason to invest in something you have no connection to. Personalization is key.'

This is what The Space That Keeps You is all about. Homes that have and represent personalities. Encouraging the idea that homes should be unique. Jeremiah explains, 'Throughout the process of writing my book, I found such beauty in the diversity of my friend’s homes. Some were vast, some were just a couple of rooms. Some were bright and bold, others were muted and calm. Some had layers of accessories, others were more pared back. But all of them felt intimate because of their history and the warmth of those that lived there. As you design your home, embrace what’s original and celebrate the unexpected.'

So really Jeremiah's approach to interior design has little to do with what's on trend or the rules we are often told to follow, and it has far more to do with what naturally starts to happen when you live in a space. You collect things, surround yourself with pieces you are drawn to, and mean something to you and that creates the perfect interiors, unique to you.

When we asked Jeremiah what defines 'home' to you, he didn't focus on the furniture, or the colors, or anything to do with the decor in fact. His answer was simply, 'Anywhere that I’m surrounded by the people I love and the things that tell our story.

Nate Berkus is one of interior design's biggest names for a reason – time and time again, he curates spaces that are full of character, charm, and a tasteful mix of old and new. 

When any designer brings a design element or piece of furniture into their own home, it's safe to say they've given it a stamp of approval. So, when Nate shows off his family's home – which he shares with just-announced Queer Eye star Jeremiah Brent – on social media, we pay extra attention.

Recently, the world-renowned designer took to Instagram to share his dining room – and the space is a masterclass in his interior design style. Though it's a stunning example of transitional style, the room means so much more than a collection of lovely furniture to Nate. This is what we love about the space.

In the photo's caption, Nate shares that the dining room table is the place where his family eats meals, where his kids do homework, where they host gatherings and so much more: 'So full of incredible life moments, big and small. For me, this is what design is about.'

The heartfelt attention to detail Nate brings to every project shows in this space especially. With a warm, inviting color palette, lush textures, and stunning city views, the dining room feels like it belongs to a family – and not a picture-perfect showroom – while still delivering on high-end design.

With a comfort-forward, built-in booth decked out in plush, striped cushions on one side of the table, the seating arrangement looks oh-so-cozy. And its juxtaposition against a full wall of antique-style tile mirrors makes for a bold statement that pulls the room together. Sophisticated brown leather armchairs line the other side of the table, tying into the space's modern organic color scheme.

Framing the seating area are two built-in, floor-to-ceiling cabinets holding all the hosting essentials, and a meshed cover provides a clean look while still allowing easy access. Plus, the cabinetry's paint color blends with the New York City apartment's historic ceiling trim – an intricate detail that adds so much character to the space. Herringbone-pattern hardwood flooring grounds the room, too, offering the perfect dose of warmth and charm.

The lighting in this room is unsurprisingly well-considered, and clearly layered for a cozy, moody atmosphere. With a sculptural overhead fixture and two mirrored sconces framing the bench, the family is able to eat in a well-lit space without being overwhelmed by harsh overheads. A small, unique table lamp adorns the dining table as well, along with a serving bowl and ornate salt and pepper shakers.

The dining room layout blends into a living room area, with floor-to-ceiling views of New York City, plus a cozy boucle chair. A modern dresser and antique gold mirror round out the space, sandwiched between tall picture windows. And perhaps our favorite part of the space is its flow into Nate and Jeremiah's kitchen – another of their rooms we admire. A faint reflection of the marble-clad, bright and airy kitchen can be seen in the wall of mirrors and can be found through an expansive doorway.

This dining room is a clear representation of Nate's timeless, transitional design, and there's so much to love – from its high ceilings and city views to carefully chosen pieces of furniture, no detail was overlooked. And as if that wasn't enough, this dining room hosts family meals and daily conversation. We can't help but agree with Nate on this one – this really is what design is about.

This week, it was announced that Jeremiah Brent will be taking over Bobby Berk's former role as interior designer on Netflix's popular makeover show Queer Eye. 

Though we love Jeremiah and are excited about his upcoming projects, it's a bittersweet goodbye. Bobby has been there since the beginning with his impeccable taste and his Southern charm. Throughout his eight seasons of Queer Eye, the interior design maven has, again and again, demonstrated the power of design. From making Wesley Hamilton's home wheelchair accessible to the empowering makeover of fan-favorite Jess Guilbeaux's home, Bobby has made it his project to change lives. It's sad to see him go.

We could wax about the designer's Queer Eye home decor legacy, but luckily, you don't have to take it from us. In December, H&G interviewed Bobby. 

It was right after the announcement that he was leaving the show before we knew anything about his replacement or what he was doing next. When asked about his design legacy, Bobby explained that he has a lot to be proud of. 

'I am proud of my design legacy on the show.' He continued, 'I think it was my goal to show people that design can really change your life and that design doesn't have to be fancy. Design can be accessible,' Bobby told H&G exclusively.

Through his numerous world-altering interior design tips and makeovers on the show, Bobby certainly did exactly this. In each episode, it was easy to see the participants standing taller in their own homes and taking ownership of their spaces. Furthermore, Bobby set out to show that decorating on a budget doesn't mean you can't create a fabulous space, a goal he feels he has accomplished. 

Throughout the show, Bobby emphasized how interior design can impact wellbeing. This is another part of his legacy that Bobby feels very proud of. He told us: 'Simply the act of organizing your home and making your home a safe space for you is really important for mental health. So I'm very proud of the legacy that I've been able to leave and showing people how important design really is.'

Making design accessible and beautiful while proving its power is no easy feat. After all of that, we're feeling pretty proud of Bobby too.

After Bobby Berk's departure from Queer Eye's Fab Five last season, we had spent months in the dark about which designer would take his place. However, the wait is over. Today, Netflix confirmed Jeremiah Brent is joining the team and will travel to Las Vegas to film season 9 this spring.

Jeremiah already has quite the enviable résumé. He kickstarted his career as a fashion stylist and Rachel Zoe's assistant and appeared on The Rachel Zoe Project before starring alongside his husband, Nate Berkus, on HGTV’s Nate & Jeremiah by Design and The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project. He also appeared as an interior design expert on Netflix’s Say I Do, a series developed by the same creators as Queer Eye. 

Beyond television, Jeremiah owns an eponymous design firm (that specializes in residential, commercial, and hospitality design in Los Angeles and New York City) and Atrio, a curated furniture store. 

Jeremiah will join his four co-stars who each have their own speciality in the makeover show. Tan France focuses on fashion, Jonathan Van Ness on grooming, Antoni Porowski on food and wine, and Karamo Brown on culture. Bobby Berk spent eight seasons as the show's interior design expert, working on designing and decorating the homes under tight time pressure. He announced his exit in November. 

'It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on Queer Eye. It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with Queer Eye is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon,' he shared via an Instagram post. 

'To all our wonderful, loving, amazing, and brave heroes, there is so much I want to say and express so much gratitude to you all for letting me into your homes and hearts. It’s all because of you that I’ve kept going all these years, and each and every one of you have changed me for the better,' Bobby adds.

'I’m so very proud of all of you! Being able to help guide you to find the best version of yourselves is something I never took for granted and never will.'

There's nothing like a light and airy kitchen to bring the family together, and this kitchen redesign fits the bill. Curated by interior designers, authors, and TV personalities Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent for their New York City home, the space is a masterclass in transitional design. 

Defined by statement skylights, veined marble countertops and considered vintage light fixtures, the space is effortless and timeless – and serves the family's every need. We spoke with Nate about the kitchen design, how it's changed over time, and how it feels to live inside the space. This is what he had to say.

Nate says this is the family's second time living in the space – they sold the house to friends years ago, but recently bought it back. And since the first time designing the kitchen, quite a bit has changed.

'It was time for us – our style had evolved. And also our budget had evolved, in all honesty – we could barely afford to live there the first time we bought that place,' Nate tells Homes & Gardens.

Originally, designing the kitchen was an exercise in creating a gorgeous space while sticking to a budget. Though the room's bronze kitchen island was bespoke (and 'the only splurge in the entire room at the time,' according to Nate), the rest of the kitchen's features were price-checked and relatively inexpensive.

'We had sconces from CB2 on the backsplash, we used plain white subway tile, and we painted the existing cabinetry – it was beautifully made, but it was a dark mahogany when we bought the house,' he says.

In 'evolution two' of the kitchen, Nate and Jeremiah had an opportunity to adjust the space to their developed taste – and an increased budget. The final product brings in a bit more vintage, and the classic marble countertop and backsplash introduce a splash warm, inviting color to the space. One of Nate's favorite elements of the space is the welcoming antique lighting.

'We replaced all the sconces on the perimeter, did a beautiful Italian fixture from the '60s over the island, and the most amazing vintage Italian sconces on the backsplash – where the CB2 ones used to be. We took [those] out of our previous home – we owned all that stuff. The thing over the island was in our bedroom and the sconces were in our parlor, so we just earmarked those for the kitchen because we knew we'd be spending so much time in there,' he says.

Though the marble adds a stunning touch to the room, it was a source of disagreement during the planning process, says Nate. While he wanted more whites, browns, and grays, Jeremiah pushed for the more 'busy' option, and ultimately won.

'I fought him on that, and I was wrong ... He was absolutely insistent, and he was right. I love it. It's really, really warm, ' says Nate.

The brass island was stripped and redone in the Calacatta Paonazzo marble, 'which felt more forever,' Nate says. An integrated sink made of the same marble material allows the color scheme and atmosphere to flow seamlessly throughout the space. And the cabinets? They got yet another refresh.

'We plastered the walls and the hood, and we covered a lot of the appliances, this time around, with cabinet-front appliances,' he says.

Nate describes the previous design scheme as 'a little bit more industrial in style,' noting its subway tile, butcher block counters and black cabinetry. The new space allows for an entirely different atmosphere.

'This feels a bit more European. A little bit more Venetian. A little bit more Romantic, and softer,' says Nate

The room's defining domed skylights steal the show, bringing natural light and visual interest.

'That was done by the person who owned the apartment before us who actually expanded onto some of the exterior terrace to create that atrium. And it's one of my favorite things in the house,' says Nate.

A kitchen is meant for cooking and sharing moments with loved ones, and the family's current kitchen makes much more space for daily use. Its vast countertop fits three different lamps, a spice tray and more.

'The island has a beautiful bowl from my husband's shop Atrio that we keep bananas and avocados for the kids in. The kids have breakfast at that island now, whereas before they couldn't really do that,' says Nate.

Functional and fresh, the finished kitchen is truly a success. With plenty of room for the whole family and a lot of natural light, it offers a serene escape that Nate and Jeremiah love.

Curating a comfortable – and productive – home office setup can prove quite the challenge. And while it's natural to learn from your mistakes and make adjustments over time, going in with an office design game plan makes for a smooth transition and a rewarding work week.

Lucky for us, interior designer and television star Jeremiah Brent just took to Instagram to share the mistakes he's made while creating his team's office space, plus tips for avoiding them yourself – and it's fast track to design success. Here's what Jeremiah suggests, with a stylish and welcoming home office as the end goal.

'I share these as someone who has learned from his own ways, so I'm not judging, more providing you a blueprint for success,' he says in the video.

Jeremiah's top tips for office styling

With five genius tips, Jeremiah has made designing the ideal home office easier than ever –  and we're certainly taking some of his advice. From functional lighting to heartwarming finishing touches, it seems that Jeremiah's team is benefiting from his creative process. Here's how to get the look – and feel – right at home.

1. Invest in lighting

First things first, Jeremiah suggests being intentional with your office lighting scheme, and investing in a creative blend of light fixtures. Though offices have been 'really conventional and a little institutional' historically, he says the office doesn't have to be that way – and shouldn't.

'Ambient lighting, table lamps, sconces, overhead lighting if you can do it, adds a lot of layers, it feels warm, and the space can transition through the day, not only for you but for the people you work with,' he says in the video.

By mixing up the lighting with different options, you'll be able to shift the mood of the space depending on the season, time of day, or even your mood. Your space will feel more like a living space than just the place you go to type away the day.

2. Create comfortable breakout areas

The second tip Jeremiah suggests has to do with the moments you're not fully immersed in work, or meeting casually with your team. He suggests 'investing in comfortable breakout areas for your team' – though these work just as well if you're working in your own at-home office.

Create more laid-back spaces for having lunch, speaking with your colleagues or winding down at the end of the day by grouping more comfortable seating ideas together, or getting creative with recreational spaces. Decorate the space with items that make you (and your team) feel at peace will leave the workday feeling like a breeze.

'One of the things that I've always tried to do, especially with our office spaces, I've been wanting it to feel like a home away from home. Beautiful, comfortable sofas, places that people can disconnect to and have a little bit of silence, pretty things to look around and look at,' Jeremiah says.

3. Invest in one kind of dishware

Though he admits this tip is more for aesthetics than anything, Jeremiah says that investing in 'one central collection of dishware' will make an office's kitchen space more streamlined.

'The truth is, everybody brings their mugs, everybody brings a plate, and it ends up being like a graveyard of all the dishes you just don't care about from your house.'

If you're working with others, purchase a set of mugs, glasses, bowls, plates and silverware to ensure your team has everything they need to succeed.

4. Create space for storage

Though Jeremiah's hesitant to admit it, offices need storage, and putting thought into office storage solutions that improve your workflow and efficiency makes quite the difference.

'I like everything to be beautiful, and I like to just get rid of everything. But the truth is, you need things. And the people that I'm around constantly at the office are reminding me,' says Jeremiah in the video.

Make your storage work for you by testing out what works best. Whether you prefer 'smart storage,' built-in shelves or vintage items, there are so many ways to make space for your work supplies. Just be sure to carve out a place at the beginning of the design process so your at-home setup doesn't fall into disorganization.

5. Consider functional chairs

Jeremiah's 'last and biggest lesson' has to do with seating, as he learned the hard way that comfortable desk chairs are a must. After opting for vintage Cubist chairs that brought aesthetic appeal but little to no comfort, he says a change was necessary.

'I realized they were causing everyone in the office an immense amount of pain. So, unfortunately, you've got to find a nice balance between beauty and ergonomic,' he says in the video.

Make sure to pick seating that makes you want to keep working – the last thing you'll want at the end of a long day is an aching back.

At the end of the day, designing a home office is most successful when you're able to get your work done in a calm, collected way – and these tips will take you far. 'Invest in things that are going to make people happy and comfortable – seems pretty straightforward,' Jeremiah says.

With the Christmas festivities well and truly over, our homes can soon start to feel in need of a post-holiday refresh. January welcomes a time to reset for the year ahead, embrace new interior design trends and create a fresh feel in our homes, making a change from all of the colorful and cozy decor.

While there are obvious ways to rest your home, most notably to take down Christmas decor, there are many other subtle changes you can embrace. Interior designer Jeremiah Brent took to Instagram to talk through four ideas that will result in a cleaner and refreshed space. Below, we've rounded up his ideas to give you some inspiration if you're looking for some low-effort yet impactful ways to achieve a fresh and clutter-free space.

1. Swap out bed linens and hand towels

'Number one for me is a simple linen change with your beds, even hand towels,' says Jeremiah. 'During the holidays and during the winter, things become a little moodier, a little more autumnal and I think the new year is a great way to bring in fresh and happy and bright.'

Although this seems a simple change, this tiny way to reset your home after Christmas can help your bedroom and bathroom feel instantly uplifted, especially by opting for lighter colors and soft textures in contrast to winter's rich color trends. 2. Do a clear out

'With new beginnings, it means you need to edit the things you might have accumulated over the last year,' says Jeremiah. While doing a clear-out is arguably one of the most obvious reset ideas at the start of a new year, it shouldn't be underestimated. 3. Switch around artwork

'Another one of my favorite things to do post-new year celebration is curate the art,' Jeremiah continues. 'We’re always moving things around in our space and art is so interesting because it can completely shift the energy of a room. Play around with the art, have some fun.'

Decorating with art, as Jeremiah observes, can go a long way in transforming the feel of a room. This doesn't mean you need to purchase new pieces, but simply changing the rooms in which existing pieces are displayed in or refreshing their frames can elevate your space and give it a new lease of life.

'And lastly, I think one of the things that’s really interesting and really important in the house for me is the way the space smells and I think the new year is a great opportunity to bring in a new profile, something that feels a little different than what you’ve been burning for the last three months.'

In the latest unexpected pairing (that's brought us new levels of joy), Jeremiah Brent has unofficially crossed with The White Lotus – to pair characters with spaces he's previously designed. 

'Yes, it seems like I have too much time on my hands, but also, I just think it's super fun personality-wise to see it translated in the space,' Jeremiah comments –  and of course, we're inclined to agree.

The designer, who founded his eponymous firm with locations in Los Angeles and New York City, has curated some of the world's best homes – but three, in particular, best align with Tanya, Portia, and Harper from the aforementioned show. 

'First would definitely be Tanya, a fan-favorite and a personal favorite of mine. [She] stresses me out so much, but I always think about this bar that I designed for her. It's open and grand. There are these dramatic curved sofas, and it's a bar,' Jeremiah Brent 'ays. 'The whole space is centered around coming together and having a good time, which is so 'Tanya.'

And it would seem Tanya has good taste. The whole space radiates a level of chicness, but the curvy sofa is particularly on trend for 2024 (after already shaping the way we decorated last year). 

'These become popular in the design world due to their ability to introduce organic forms,' adds Olson + Baker's design expert James Scaife. 'Unlike traditional straight-lined sofas, their curved silhouette adds softness and fluidity to the room. These curves bring dynamic energy and visual interest, creating a welcoming ambiance.'

To get the look (in a way that would surely impress Tanya), we're opting for this curvy sofa, designed by Leanne Ford below.

For Portia, Jeremiah brings things closer to home. 'Next would be Portia... She loves a pattern in the outfits she wears. I always think about our daughter Poppy’s bedroom [below], which is really vibrant and fun and young.'

And the designer saved Harper, one of his favorite characters, for last. 'I love a dark, moody, stray cat, and that’s what she reminds me of,' he notes. 'I did a bar in Beverly Hills that was dark and definitely a space to be enjoyed after 7pm. That reminds me of her.'

When fashion figure Jenna Lyons shares design advice, we listen – especially when it's alongside Jeremiah Brent. The style guru recently sat down with interior designer Jeremiah to discuss the one item that is (arguably) the hardest to place – the TV – and her advice comes with one rule we need to follow.

'The thing that stresses me out deeply [is] televisions over mantel places. I know I am insistent – I don't like any room that [has this] unless it's an actual TV room,' Jenna says. 'Hide the TV. Make it go behind the fireplace.' Naturally, Jeremiah asks if this is a 'trigger' for Jenna, who responds: 'It's actually the number one [thing] I fight over with people.'

We may often question how to stylishly hide a TV – and its placement – so where should we choose instead? Jenna doesn't expand in the footage, but a look inside her living space fails to show the device – meaning it is either expertly concealed or likely, even in another room. 

In her Soho loft, Jenna has styled her mantelpiece with a large gold mirror, a series of smaller photo frames, and a (what appears to be) a giant New Guinea Shield plant.

 As mentioned, there is no TV to be found, so we can't lay out lessons from her apartment, but we can still ask other experts where we should opt to place it instead.  

It's important to consider the layout of your room when placing the TV. Ideally, you want your screen out of the way of high-traffic areas to avoid it being knocked or your view disturbed by people walking past the screen, comments Alan Whyte, managing director at Loewe. 

Mantels are out, so what are our alternatives? Alan recommends picking up a stylish TV stand or shelf, especially if we have the chance to use something that's custom-built for our room. 

'By standing your TV on a custom-built shelf or media unit, you get to choose the position of the screen to ensure the perfect viewing experience at an optimum eye height, allowing you to keep a comfortable posture,' he says. 

'In addition, having a TV on a shelf or media unit can act as a focal point to the room, so it can be styled, painted, and accessorized to draw attention.'

Christmas decor can be divisive: some people love going all out to create maximalist and colorful displays, whereas others prefer a minimalist approach.

Whether you follow rules when it comes to your Christmas decor ideas, or incorporate whatever brings you the most joy, interior designer Jeremiah Brent has some opinions on what he avoids. Taking to Instagram, the designer shared a video in which he discusses his 'Christmas concerns': decor choices he steers clear of over the festive season.

'Christmas is arguably my favorite holiday and while I think every holiday season should be about expressing what you love, I do want to share with you some of my Christmas concerns,' says Jeremiah.

1. Bare tree stands

'Number one, I have to say is a bare tree stand,' says Jeremiah. 'The least you can do is take a nice runner or a blanket. Something beautiful and cover it up. It just feels super unfinished and it's a really easy thing to fix.'

We certainly agree that not decorating underneath the Christmas tree can result in a bare and unfinished look. As Jeremiah says, it is an easy problem to solve by opting to place either a tree skirt or collar around the base of the tree to create a more finished look. 2. Gimmicky decor

'Number two is any type of gimmicky anything,' says Jeremiah. This may be a controversial point, but Jeremiah doesn't embrace Christmas decor that includes gimmicky slogans in the home. This one definitely comes down to personal choice, and so if you're a fan of kitsch decor then go for it, but for those drawn to more understated, minimalist Christmas decor like Jeremiah is, it's one to avoid. 

3. Overloading power strips

'Number three is definitely overloading power strips,' says Jeremiah. 'We've all seen the movies, we’ve all seen the specials, we know how it ends. One power strip is not supposed to plug into another and plug into another and plug into another.'

Not only does overloading power strips look bad, but it's also unsafe so best to avoid this holiday season. Jeremiah points out that there are alternative Christmas light ideas, such as opting for battery-operated lights to create a cleaner look underneath the tree and avoid this Christmas lighting mistake. 

4. Too many ornaments

Jeremiah isn't a fan of overdoing Christmas decor, preferring instead a more subtle and understated look. 'If you collect something so much that you have to have a room dedicated to storing it, there might be a problem,' he says.

Again, this one is entirely down to personal preference, but to create a simple and modern Christmas decor scheme, you can avoid this Christmas tree decorating mistake by opting for a less-is-more approach and toning down the amount of ornaments you have.

5. Fake snow

'My fifth Christmas concern has to be the sprinkling of fake snow, says Jeremiah. While the designer admits this is a controversial point and that this decor choice does bring joy to some people, he isn't a fan of the impractical nature of fake snow that is difficult to clean up and remove from clothing. 

6. Scented candles

Jeremiah's final concern is scented candles at Christmastime, particularly overly sweet scents associated with Christmas. '... during the holidays, the cookie scent stresses me out. Your whole house should not sell like a snickerdoodle all day long.'

Some people love their homes being filled with Christmas scents, but again, if you prefer a more understated and less cliché approach to Christmas decor, opt instead for more subtle scents, such as the best candles below. 

While these are Jeremiah's personal dislikes for Christmas decor, the festive season is all about embracing what you love so it's best not to get caught up with too many rules. To those of us who aren't in the art or design world, buying art can be an incredibly opaque process. Luckily, interior designer Jeremiah Brent is making it much more transparent. The star decorator took to Instagram to share the search terms that he and his husband, Nate Berkus, use to find relaxing artwork for their home. From chic paintings to perfectly designed mirrors to stylish pottery Jeremiah has the answers for how to emulate his enviable interior style by decorating with art in your home.

'I get a lot of questions from people about art and while I don't pretend to be an art aficionado, I'm going to give you some advice on things and keywords that I look for when searching for art in our own home,' says Jeremiah. He continues, 'Obviously, art is so subjective but in our own space, we like things that are really clean and simple and quiet. I think because we're around so often when it comes to our space, I just want [it to be] relaxing.'

Panning around his living room decor, Jeremiah adds, 'As you can see, I'm always looking for contemporary, modern, and transitional.' He goes on to say, 'I always look for geometric, and cubism is a really interesting thing to search for. And then I always search for French 30s, 40s, and 50s. For me, that design era is especially interesting in France and Italy specifically.'

We used Jeremiah's recommended terms to scan Chairish for relaxing art pieces and found a few that definitely fit the search terms. 

Beyond art, Jeremiah recommends how to decorate your walls using a fabulous mirror. He states: 'Another thing that is really important to Nate and I [is mirrors]' You can find them usually on any secondhand website and any vintage store, but if you're looking online look for French gilt mirrors.' We absolutely love this way of decorating with mirrors.

Finally, Jeremiah goes over how to purchase 3D art, specifically pottery. His advice for these pieces is much more laissez-faire and revolves around casually looking for secondhand finds wherever you go. Jeremiah says, 'Obviously my favorite type of art is pottery. These are pieces that we've honestly just kind of collected over the years. Some of them were you know, $20, and some of them were more. We always look wherever we go for ceramics.'

With fall finally upon us, it's the perfect time of year to start thinking about cozy decor as we spend more time relaxing indoors. While there are of course so many stylish design ideas to experiment with, there are also lots of outdated fall decor trends, and interior designer Jeremiah Brent has warned of decor he avoids during fall. 

Sharing a video to Instagram, Jeremiah begins by acknowledging that: 'a lot of this is going to be very controversial' but that 'we don't all have to agree'. So whatever your stance is on fall decor – whether you like to go all out with warm colors and sentimental prints or prefer to keep things pared-back – we've rounded up Jeremiah's five no-gos when it comes to cozy season decor.

1. Flannel Sheets

You may think of flannel sheets as the ultimate bed sheet trend for fall, but Jeremiah isn't a fan. He says: 'I don't think that they transition well throughout the year.' He's got a point; this cottagecore aesthetic is a niche style so it's certainly not the best pick if you're hoping for functional bedding that looks great throughout the seasons.

Instead, consider refreshing your fall bedding with cozy throws to create a fall-appropriate look whilst they can easily be swapped out into various rooms throughout the home all year long. 

2. Silk Plants

Silk plants, otherwise known as artificial plants, or a big no-go for Jeremiah. Calling them 'dust collectors', this isn't just a fall decor trend to avoid, but an all-year-round one. 

To capture a more practical and natural look, opt for real plants to bring the outdoors in, or experiment with displaying branches in a vase for a fun take on creative fall craft ideas. 

3. Orange

While decorating with orange is strongly associated with fall, Jeremiah doesn't bring this hue into his home for fall. He instead prefers colors 'with a little bit more brown in tone-wise' such as terracotta. 

As Jeremiah suggests, opting for more muted warm tones of orange is a far more subtle approach to fall decor. For a layered and cozy look, experiment instead with different textures across soft furnishings, such as pillows, to capture an inviting sofa setup that transcends the seasons. 

4. Burlap

His next fall decor to avoid is burlap, which he calls 'the modern-day doily.' While he admits it can look good in moderation, 'it shouldn't be overlapping and layered on every tabletop' and notes that it's itchy and sheds, so perhaps not the most practical of decor choices either. 

For a more understated approach to fall table decor ideas, opt instead for natural linens in rustic hues that will stand the test of time and bring an organic feel to the table. 

5. Pumpkin Scents

'One of the most important things that I try to avoid seasonally is anything pumpkin-scented' he says. While it's perhaps his most controversial point, Jeremiah isn't a fan and prefers to steer clear of this hallmark fall decor.

If you're not so much a fan of overly sweet scents, you may agree with Jeremiah on this one. There are lots of other equally warming fall candles to embrace at this time of year that are less sickly sweet, such as sandalwood and fig.

Whether you agree with Jeremiah or not, fall decor is all about having fun and channeling your own personal tastes, so make sure to experiment and not get too caught up in the design rules. 

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are practically design royalty. The power offers innovative and original advice that makes home decor ideas easy. Luckily for us, Nate and Jeremiah told Homes & Gardens their top three tips for creating the perfect bedroom.

1. Night tables with generous space

When asked about his bedroom necessities, Nate Berkus said, 'I think a generous surface, as generous as space allows, for night tables, is really important.' 

Nate added, 'I think we're all moving through the world at a thousand miles an hour, but at night you want to sort of just plug in your phone, be able to pick up a book, have the television remote, if you have a TV in your bedroom, in a cool box so it's not just sitting there. From a very practical standpoint, having a surface next to the bed that is sufficient and generous enough to kind of support all the stuff that needs to be put there at the end of the day.'

In Nate's book, bedroom storage ideas are absolutely essential.

2. Include plenty of storage

Jeremiah echoed Nate's point on the importance of storage, but it goes further than the bedside table. He told H&G, 'Something that's really important for me in a bedroom is integrated storage and a place to put things. To Nate's point, I like a bedroom to be quiet. I like it to be soft, obviously with beautiful textures, but I like things to have a place for stuff to go somewhere. So you don't feel like you're in the middle of any type of chaos.'

3. Choose something you find extremely beautiful

However, it's not all just about creating a relaxing bedroom idea. The designers also emphasize the importance of creating a space that absolutely love in which to start and end your days.

Nate Berkus said, 'Everyone has said for a million years that bedrooms should be calm and bedrooms should be soothing. I don't disagree with that, but I also think that it's a real opportunity. I think we're affected deeply, either positively or negatively, when we first open our eyes. And I think that a bedroom that isn't well crafted and well designed isn't a great way to wake up every day.'

He continued, 'Like looking at an exercise bike with your dry cleaning hanging on it, it just reminds you that you didn't exercise and you need to put your dry cleaning away. But waking up and looking at a beautiful chest with a beautiful mirror and a wonderful vintage lamp and 3D pottery vases that you found on the weekend, is a different moment.'

Nate finishes, 'So I feel like for me in bedroom design, what you open your eyes and see first thing in the morning should be something that really is really beautiful. And I think that's a really important thing for people to remember.'

Interior design trends are an essential way we conceptualize design over time. Certain pieces, colors, and textures ebb and flow in different periods, helping to characterize different eras of style. 

However, interior design trends are also polarizing: some experts swear by them while others reject them completely. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are two designers, and husbands, caught on opposite sides of this divide.

In their television show Nate and Jeremiah by Design as well as their furniture collections with Living Spaces and Nate Home, the design power couples swear by timelessness and function in every space they create. So how do trends, and their opinions on them, fit into that?

'Nate and I have very different philosophies around trends,' Jeremiah Brent told H&G.

Nate Berkus continues, 'I think that where the tension comes in for us as designers, when we're working together, is that I tend to be the one who tends to hold on to a concept that's based in history, that's based in things that I've tried and know work, whereas Jeremiah is typically much more adventurous and more sort of a rule breaker.'

Part of this difference is the couples' differing opinions on trends. Nate tends to reject trends as 'designed to sell people more stuff.' He says: 'I am not scared of trends. I just don't believe that they should be used to fuel what you do and how you design. I think trends are fun, and it's interesting to look at everything from a different perspective, and it's fine.'

He continues, 'But for us, your home should really be a refugee of your collected experiences, and it should really be a reflection of who you are. And I think, especially with these collections that we create, we want to make pieces that you're not tired of in 10 years, that are something that feels like they can transition with your family.'

Jeremiah, on the other hand, finds trends an interesting jumping-off point for home decor ideas. He says: 'I think trends are an interesting opportunity for conversation, and for things that have maybe been a moment in the past to have this resurgence.'

He says, 'For example, granny chic is a whole moment right now, and I think it's really interesting. The trend makes people think, "Wow, I don't need a ruffled sofa, but I love a pleated lampshade,"'. He continues, 'Do I think that you need to go out and change your home and have everything ruffled with shades? No, I don't. But I think it's really interesting to always be trying to shift your perspective.'

Nate and Jeremiah believe that these varied opinions only make them stronger designers. 'We've been married for 10 years and we've worked on lots of TV makeovers, and we collaborate on certain design projects, even though we have separate firms. I feel like we learn from each other. We learn from each other's successes and we learn from each other's mistakes,' says Nate.

Jeremiah adds, 'The truth is, the conflict is great because there are a million ways to create something really beautiful and something special and impactful, and we've learned that. I mean, our home is not how I would design our space if I were alone. And the same for Nate. But we've come up with an aesthetic that meets a lot of what we both need to see and a lot of what we both value.'

Furthermore, despite their differences, the couple has very strong common ground. Jeremiah says it's very much about dopamine decor, 'The one common thread that we really believe in is that it's much more important to take stock of what really makes you happy, what you really feel like your best version of yourself in as it relates to your space, and stick with it.'

Though merging your interior style with your partner's can be difficult, Nate and Jeremiah make it look easy by recognizing that the difference in our aesthetics is the beauty in them.

1. Add items with character from different eras

Incorporating objects with history and character can help add visual interest to a room decorated in neutrals. These unique touches elevate a space like a neutral living room from cookie-cutter to ultra-elegant.

Nate Berkus told Homes & Gardens: 'I think the right way to assemble a room that has a neutral foundation is to add a lot of things that have tremendous character, a chipping gilded mirror, a beautiful metal lamp. You know, otherwise, I think it feels really flat and that's not the point.'

He continued, 'One of the reasons why we designed the VOYAGE collection to feel so minimalistic and almost reductionist is that we really wanted people to be able to focus on building a room that had a lot of different finishes in it, had a lot of different eras, had a lot of different things that had patina.'

By decorating with antiques and decorating with vintage, Nate and Jeremiah suggest you can bring your neutral space to the next level.

2. Incorporate Texture

When asked about how he likes to layer neutrals, Jeremiah Brent responded: 'It's all about texture and contrast in the right way. I think a neutral palette is super transitional, but I think there's still a lot of texture you can bring in with that neutrality.'

He added, 'In the collection, we have what almost looks like a travertine with the marble, you know, the driftwood, mixing different oaks. When using neutral colors, I think you can still have a lot of fun and play with the texture in a way that still feels layered.'

By using texture in interior design, you add visual interest to your space without sacrificing the calming color palette.

3. Play with Contrast

Variety is the spice of life, and apparently, of neutral interior design.

Nate told H&G, ' I think that for me personally, I think any space needs to have contrast. If you're too afraid of colors or if you're nervous about mixing different design areas, I think, you know, a boucle and leather, a pure performance fabric, and a sheer laying or playing around with different fabrics is a really fun way to do it.' 

Nate continued, 'We both believe that your home should feel assembled and collected, and even if you're buying, especially if you're buying new pieces, they should blend in really beautifully with any design aesthetic.'

By mixing and matching fabrics, textures, and eras, you can layer your interior design to create a neutral space that is full of character. Nate and Jeremiah wouldn't have it any other way.

Trusted by leaders in the home and lifestyle industry (like Martha Stewart) we are apt to trust anything the pro interior designer suggests. In a recent Instagram post, he offered a brilliant fall decor idea.

The Instagram reel shows Nate Berkus in his home, holding a white decorative pillow with a striped, textural look. 

In the caption, Nate states: 'My pillow philosophy: heavy on texture > heavy on color. I love a pillow that can be mixed, matched, and honestly taken to any room of the house and blend right in.' 

In the video he continues, 'This is the linen texture decorative pillow from Nate Home.' He holds up the pillow. He continues 'And the thing about it is it's heavy on texture, not heavy on color.' Nate then shows us how to implement this fall living room decor for a cozy space.

He motions to his sofa, adorned with a brown velvet pillow as well as a pinstripe pillow. 'I love mixing all of these pieces with pillows that have patterns and different saturations,' says Nate. 'And so here,' he adds 'you can see, this works with velvet, it works with this tiny pinstripe, and it really is unbelievably versatile.' The look updates your space without messing with your fall color scheme.

By updating a room with texture rather than color, one can add visual interest to the room without making it too busy. Carlin Van Noppen, head interior designer and founder at Fig Linens and Home says 'Adding textural throw pillows is a great way to introduce depth without adding color.'

She continues 'This simple hack allows Nate to update his living room in a neutral way. Even better, though he is implementing this design choice for the fall, it will remain stylish year-round.'

Nate also believes that the rectangle is the perfect shape for this kind of decorative pillow.  He states, 'This shape, by the way, this pillow can go in any room, it's not just for the bed.'

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are renowned for their casual luxe approach to design – most famously exhibited on their eponymous TLC show and in their Manhattan home – which they often share with the world. When it comes to their vacation home, however, they have gone one step further. 

The duo recently listed their vacation home in Montauk, East Hampton, on Airbnb for one night in June – and unsurprisingly, it booked up instantly (sorry). However, we don't need a reservation to take design notes that we can replicate in our own homes. Exhibiting organic materials, seamless storage, and elements of quiet luxury in almost every corner, this home is a muse that we can all learn from. When it comes to entryway colors, it's easy to overlook neutrals in favor of a more statement-making shade. As the first room of the home, every design decision counts towards a lasting first impression, after all. However, Nate and Jeremiah remind us that classics should never be underestimated. 

'What I love about neutrals is that they provide the perfect backdrop to then make the room what you want it to be,' Nate shared with H&G. This is evident around the entire home, but no space showcases its power quite like the entrance. 

Here, the bright white walls accentuate the natural sunlight – ensuring the space looks spacious and welcoming – while contrasting with the dark wooden accessories. 'Whether that’s bringing in a certain design style or color scheme, a neutral palette provides a blank canvas,' he adds.

2. Draw from your surroundings with a natural base

This home's Montauk zip code is one of the most prestigious in New York – but luxury aside, this neighborhood has an abundance of natural assets that are even more impressive than the local boutiques and restaurants. 

Situated on the edge of the Atlantic, the village is known for its rocky landscape and sandy beaches that act as a source of immediate inspiration for all who visit – including Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. Throughout their home, they have introduced beautiful organic materials that pay homage to the natural surroundings – as seen with the wood paneling that surrounds the open-plan living space.

Though wooden panels are not to everybody's taste, they are an effective way to give your home a natural, coastal feel – much like this one. And it's a look that is approved by other experts, too. 

'Wooden panels might surge in popularity this year due to the growing
trend of Scandinavian design,' adds New York designer Artem Kropovinsky. 'This aesthetic is marked by its utilization of natural materials, minimalist lines, and basic shapes. Wooden panels flawlessly align with this style, contributing to the creation of a cozy and inviting ambiance.' We're officially convinced. 

3. Invest in soothing curves

The relationship between celebrities and curved furniture is certainly no secret. Everyone from Kate Hudson to Chrissy Teigen has already backed the ever-popular design trend, but with support from top designers like Nate and Jeremiah we're sure that curvy sofas are here to stay. 

In this room, the designers have chosen a muted brown curved sofa, but whatever tone you choose, the benefits of this sofa remain the same. 

'Curved sofas infuse any room with a hint of mid-century modern appeal,' Artem adds. 'Alongside their curved form, which delivers support, the shape is incredibly versatile. They can be employed in multiple ways, from accommodating a large gathering to creating a snug reading corner.'

4. Give open shelving a try

Open shelving is one of the most controversial kitchen storage ideas, with designers often divided on its ease of maintenance and practicality. However, Nate and Jeremiah just made a case for this feature – and it's impossible to argue with this kitchen shelving's aesthetic appeal. 

Alongside its functionality, this open shelving is one of the most personal elements in the kitchen. It showcases the couple's favorite crockery and glassware while also adding interest to the otherwise neutral white wall. It's hard to imagine the kitchen without it there. 

5. Don't be shy of showcasing personality

'The greatest rooms I have ever assembled have been with such deep input from the people who live in them,' Nate shared with H&G. 'At the end of the day, when your eye travels across a space that reflects you, you really feel at home.' And it is in this living room where his ideology comes into play the most. 

Here, Nate and Jeremiah have given their most personal possessions a platform – from books and vases to decorating with antiques and trinkets that mean something to the couple.

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are design forces in their own right, but together, their influence is hard to match. So, when they share paint advice, we take note. 

The hosts of TLC's Nate & Jeremiah by Design sat down with H&G to discuss all things color-related – following their partnership with Cali-based paint powerhouse Behr. Their collection centers around neutrals – the hues set to shape color trends in the year ahead (Behr named Blank Canvas their Color of the Year for 2023, after all). 

The 'trend' label sometimes feels unfair – with the suggestion that admiration for these tones is somewhat fleeting. However, Nate and Jeremiah explain that all neutrals will struggle to fall out of fashion – and one color, in particular, is sure to stand the test of time.

'Beige is so timeless, which is why we chose Even better Beige as one of the room colors,' Nate says when asked to choose his single most versatile color. 'It can be paired with almost anything and will always look handsome.'

Nate is certainly not alone in his argument. Jeremiah, too, says that a warm neutral, such as the aforementioned beige, is 'the most timeless color' – labeling it as 'the perfect canvas for design for any design aesthetic.'

So, there is no denying that decorating with beige is one of the safest (but nonetheless most fashionable design decisions you can make. But what makes it so ageless? For Nate, its versatility comes out on top.

'What I love about neutrals is that they provide the perfect backdrop to then make the room what you want it to be,' he says. 

'Whether that’s bringing in a certain design style or color scheme, a neutral palette literally provides a blank canvas [Behr’s 2023 color of the year]. I’m not the hugest fan of bright paint colors or accent walls; rather, experiment by painting niches, like shelving.'

If you're looking for a paint idea worth the investment, Nate, and Jeremiah suggest beige is the way to go. However, looking for something timeless doesn't mean you need to neglect the shades that will be in vogue in the following year. And with beige, you don't have to. 

Lick's Studio team predicts beige will be one of the biggest hues of 2023 after suggesting that people are looking to 'reconnect with nature' in the months ahead. They label beige as the 'color of the earth and wood,' adding that it is a solid and dependable hue that is completely cocooning. 'Its warming yellow tones will envelop and comfort you while connecting you to the outdoors from the safety of your home,' they add. 

We recommend pairing beige paint colors with lashings of texture in the form of fabrics, wood, and stone to add physical comfort and visual interest to a space.

Understanding how to use paint is only effective if you know what to avoid, too, they say. So, what is the biggest error you can make when painting a room – and how could this paint idea negatively impact your home? Both designers agree: the answer comes down to your lighting. 

'People often choose their paint color without considering the lighting of their actual space,' Jeremiah says. 'What you see in a store with fluorescent lighting is very different from the natural light that will change with every hour in your home.'

Nate Berkus emphasizes this, reinforcing that color reads differently depending on the time of day and your choice of lighting ideas – something many forget when experimenting with paint swatches. 

What should you do instead? 

Simply being aware of the transformative power of light is the first step in avoiding this common paint mistake. However, the process doesn't end there.

'I recommend gathering swatches of paint, putting them on the wall in the actual room you'll be painting, and watching how their hue evolves throughout the day,' Jeremiah says. 'There, you'll get a clearer picture of how the paint will read in the room.'

Plus, instead of committing to a single color in one room, Nate suggests playing with multiple color options to see what a color looks like at various points in the day. 'Experiment with a couple of color options and live with them for a day or two,' he suggests.

Choosing the correct shade for your space is another way to guarantee success. While color trends can often fluctuate, Nate recommends decorating with neutrals to ensure a failsafe backdrop that will work seamlessly in all spaces.

With this advice, how can future renovations ever go wrong? 

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are renowned for creating spaces that are functional but indisputably stylish. Together, they front TLC's Nate & Jeremiah by Design, and recently partnered with Behr Paint and The Jennifer Hudson Show to surprise a deserving veteran family with a home makeover.

But how do they approach Christmas decorating – and how does it differ from their usual pared-back but comfortable design aesthetic? 'I’m really into Christmas and go all out,' says Jeremiah in an exclusive interview with H&G. 'My husband, on the other hand, counts down the days until all of the decorations can come down.' 

And what, in their eyes, is the biggest festive decor mistake most of us make? 'People often feel obligated to use everything they've gathered throughout the years and place each item in the same exact spot,' Jeremiah says. He does, however, have a simple fix that doesn't involve us buying a whole new set of ornaments every year.

'I'd encourage doing something more unexpected and reimagining the decor each year to keep it looking fresh. The good news is brands make such chic holiday decor now, so there's no need to sacrifice style or shortage of opportunity to get creative,' elaborates Jeremiah.

This, of course, can mean anything from using Christmas tree decor for a pretty display on a festive mantelpiece (above) to positioning a staircase garland along the center of your Christmas table (below). But Nate is keen for us to switch our color schemes away from the traditional reds, greens and golds, too. 

'People think because it's the holidays, they need to stick to a traditional red and green color palette,' he says. 'Instead, reach for metallics, gold, and silver. Paired with greenery from the garden, it's one of the easiest and chicest ways to make a room feel festive.'

So, according to the design duo, it's all about paring back that color scheme, leaving those red and green ornaments in storage but showcasing the metallics you already have boosted with Christmas foliage. We can get on board with that message.

On the subject of a pared-back color scheme, Nate and Jeremiah are experts. So much so, in fact, that they recently paired with Behr to help transform a deserving family’s home.

Although the pandemic has put international travel on pause, it hasn’t stopped the couple from tapping into inspiration from their previous trips around the world. 'For this collection, we wanted to really focus on the 1950s, mid-century, as a starting point. And once we dug into what was happening with the finishes and the materials and tones of wood and everything, we shifted the lens to what was happening in the 1950s and came up with hopefully what is a very thoughtfully laid out design collection that answers the need for people who lean towards a slightly more modernist feeling,' Nate concludes.

1. Focus on what you love

'The focus should be on what is calming, what is joyful to you,' the Things That Matter author explains of his top bedroom design tip. 'What do you want your eyes to land on when you first open them in the morning? And what are some of the last things you want to take in – textures, imagery, objects, shapes – before you turn the lights out at night?'

2. Think: comfort

Of the bedroom he shares with husband Jeremiah, Nate says it’s all about comfort: 'We like a low bed. We like a lot of texture, whether it's a soft, really warm rug, we like playing with different sheens in a bedroom. Our bedroom has got all these different textures blended; everything feels very timeless. For us, it's all about that comfort component.'

3. Make bedroom design a priority

The talk show host notes it’s important to feel a distinction between work and leisure in your space – especially if you’re working remotely. 

'I think part of that relaxation ritual is having a beautifully designed place to sleep. I think that people traditionally, at least in my experience, have always felt like the bedroom was a bit of an afterthought. They don't change their mattress for 25 years and the bedrooms become like the catch-all for the pieces of furniture that used to live in the living room or the pair of chairs that used to be in the family room,' he explains. 

Jeremiah echoed his partner’s sentiments, adding that designing a bedroom takes careful consideration and time. 'I think with any room in your home, you really have to craft a space based on the moments that you anticipate having in there,' he says. The designer recently added a chair and stylish lamp beside a window in their master bedroom suggesting a small change to create an inviting space in which you can read a book, take a call or just decompress from the day’s activities. 

'I think the master bedroom is one of the most restorative spaces in the house, whether you have children or not, it's where you start your day and where you end it. So make it beautiful.' 

4. Make it personal

The stylish couple, who married in 2014, share two children: Poppy, five, and Oskar, two. Jeremiah loves seeing the special people in their lives on display in their bedroom. 'Next to our bed, I have a framed picture of Nate and me when he was proposing, as well as a picture of our children, but in the bathroom and throughout different areas, we have all different family members.' 

5. Less is more

Jeremiah is quick to point out that when it comes to accessorizing your bedroom, less is more. 'I have a hard time when you've got a million photos on the wall staring at you in your bed, that stresses me out.'
