We love taking inspiration from Joanna Gaines' floral arrangements, and they add such a beautifully natural touch to her interior schemes. But what makes them even more special is the fact that most of them come from her own home-grown, seasonal cut-flower garden.

Cut flowers will be happiest in free-draining soil, rather than sitting in heavy, saturated soil.'

Right now, Joanna's Texan garden is full of colorful foxgloves, tall delphiniums, and delicate white flowers (either Queen Anne's lace or ammi majus), whilst vibrant blue plumbago grows in the pots by her shed.

'Raised beds also warm earlier in the year than regular borders, meaning you can plant flowers a little bit sooner than when planting in the ground,' adds Drew. 'You can sow or plant annual cut flowers (such as the ammi majus) around a month earlier in raised beds than in the ground, depending on your climate, and it can be even sooner if you cover them with fleece or cloches to warm the soil.'

We love the way that Joanna's garden isn't purely functional, too. She's placed a pretty outdoor furniture set and parasol in the perfect spot to sit and admire her handiwork (when it's not raining, perhaps!). You, too, can really make a feature of a space like this, and it might even make you rethink a terrace or patio area – instead of slabs, lay gravel for a more rustic look and set your raised beds in rows, like Joanna Gaines.

A final tip from Drew for the best Spring show: 'If you have biennial or perennial flowers in raised beds, such as delphiniums and foxgloves, you should feed the soil in spring to create the best display. Adding a fresh layer of compost in spring or sprinkling some balanced, slow-release fertilizer will provide a dose of essential nutrients to help plants grow strongly and bloom profusely.'

Method

• In the bowl of an electric mixer (like Hearth & Hand's KitchenAid artisan stand mixer, which can be fitted with the KitchenAid bread bowl), combine your bread flour, yeast, and water. Mix well with a wooden spoon (Joanna uses Magnolia's walnut spoon) until a smooth, sticky, batter forms.
• Scrape down the sides of the bowl using a bench scraper, then cover and set aside to rest at room temperature until light, bubbly and practically doubled in size (approx. 2-3 hours).
• To the same bowl after resting, add the yeast and 3 cups of the bread flour, plus the salt and malt syrup.
• Using the hook attachment of your stand mixer, mix on low speed until a rough dough is formed. Add more flour as needed to form a ball.
• Mix on medium-low speed to knead the dough until pliable and smooth (about 6 minutes). If the dough feels too tacky, add a touch more flour; if it feels too dry, add water 1 tsp at a time. The dough should be able to be stretched thin enough to allow light through without tearing.
• Divide the dough into 4oz pieces and form them into smooth balls, tucking the edges underneath. Cover the balls with a damp towel and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.
• Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly brush the paper with olive oil. Form each ball into a bagel by poking a hole in the center and working your thumb around the inside of the hole until you have a ring.
• Place the rings on your prepared baking sheet and cover them again with the damp towel. Allow to proof for another 20 minutes.
• Place the baking sheets in large bags (or cover with plastic wrap), and place in the refrigerator to proof overnight (or up to 2 days). To test the bagels, fill a bowl with water and place one bagel in the bowl. The bagel should float to the surface; if it doesn’t, allow the bagels to proof for another 10 minutes.
• To make the topping, combine the white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, flaxseed, hemp seeds, poppy seeds, fennel seeds, caraway seeds, salt, and rehydrated onion in a small bowl. Set aside.
• When ready to bake the bagels, preheat your oven to 500°F. Position the racks on the upper third and lower third of the oven.
• Fill a large shallow saucepan with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the baking soda and malt syrup to the water, then gently drop as many bagels as will fit comfortably into the boiling water. They should float to the surface.
• Cook for 2 minutes on the first side before flipping the bagels gently with a slotted spoon (like this one from Target) and cooking for another 2 minutes on the second side. Use the slotted spoon to remove the bagels from the water, tapping to remove as much excess water as possible.
• Place the bagels smooth-side down directly into the bowl with the seed mixture, then transfer them to the baking sheets, topping-side up. Sprinkle with additional topping if needed. Continue with the remaining bagels.
• Bake the bagels for 5 minutes, then rotate the baking sheets top rack to bottom rack and turn them 180 degrees.
• Reduce the temperature to 450°F and continue to bake until the bagels are lightly golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom (approx. another 5 to 6 minutes).
• Allow the bagels to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

• 6 tbsp (¾ stick) margarine, at room temperature
• One 10-oz jar maraschino cherries, drained and chopped
• ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
• ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk
• One 20-oz package chocolate almond bark, broken into smaller pieces
• One 11.5oz bag milk chocolate chips
• 2 ½ cups dry-roasted salted peanuts, finely chopped
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Method

• Line a flat cookie sheet with parchment paper.
• In a mixer (Joanna uses the KitchenAid Artisan 5qt stand mixer) fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the frosting mix, powdered sugar, margarine, maraschino cherries, vanilla, and condensed milk.
• Beat on low speed, gradually turning the speed to medium until the mixture takes on a fluffy consistency (about 4 minutes).

• Working in batches, remove the cherry balls from the freezer and dunk them one at a time with a fork or spoon into the chocolate mixture. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off over the pan, then return the balls to the parchment paper.
• Refrigerate until completely hardened (about 20 minutes), then serve. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Ingredients

• 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
• 1 cup packed light brown sugar
• ¾ cup granulated sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp kosher salt
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1½ cups rolled oats
• 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
• 1½ cups peanut butter chips
• ½ cup chopped walnuts

Method

• Preheat your oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Method

• Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
• In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium high until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
• Beat in the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract on medium speed until combined.
• Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl. Slowly add this mixture into your wet ingredients while mixing on low speed until thoroughly incorporated.
• Scoop the dough onto your prepared baking sheet using a cookie scoop or large spoon (approx. 1½ tbsp dough per cookie).
• Bake for 10-12 minutes. Allow the cookies to sit on the pan for 3-5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
• To make the frosting, cream the butter in a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mixing on high speed until light and fluffy (about 3 to 4 minutes).
• Add the vanilla and continue to mix on high speed for about a minute.
• Reduce the speed to low and slowly add in the powdered sugar, approx. ¼ cup at a time. Add the milk and continue to mix slowly until smooth. When the mixture is smooth, increase the speed to medium, mixing until fluffy (about 2 more minutes).
• To assemble your cookie sandwiches, set the cookies up in pairs. With the bottom of one cookie facing up, use a small scoop to place about 2 tbsp of buttercream on this side of the cookie, and place the second cookie on top.
• Sandwich them together, pressing just enough to spread the filling to the edges. Repeat this process with the remaining pairs, and roll the edges of each cookie sandwich in sprinkles if you wish.
• Store the cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
