This doesn't need to always be the case however; there's no reason why you can't be just as experimental with your bathroom decor as other rooms in the home.

Championing this ethos is a maximalist bathroom designed by interior design maestro Kelly Wearstler, which channels rectangular checkered tiles all over the room; including the floors, walls, and even the ceiling. 

We spoke to the interior design experts, and it turns out these dramatic bathroom tile trends can actually work wonders in creating a cohesive room that feels calming. 

'The use of maximalist design provides an enveloping feeling of grandeur, perfect for somewhere small, such as a bathroom,' explains LA-based interior designer Poppy Kate Garner. 'The art of being able to put together elaborate patterns and colors, gorgeously clashing, or the same bold tiles, covering a bathroom head-to-toe, gives off a brilliant feeling of knowledge about design and creativity whilst sparking a conversation.'

Chelsea Potthast, Principal at Potthast Design also recommends opting for a fully-tiled bathroom, explaining it can elevate the space: 'Can’t decide which materials to use on your bathroom floor, wall, and ceiling? Why not use a combination of your favorite tiles for all three? The uniform, seamless look can play up any special existing architectural features in the bathroom.' 

'Other elements like plumbing, lighting fixtures, and mirrors will stand out more against a repetitive backdrop. Choosing a repeating pattern or print can have a calming effect as well,' continues Chelsea.

For interior designer Nicholas Kaiko, it's important to consider the style and color of your tiles to ensure a timeless look: 'While the maximalist trend might be current, choosing a timeless tile design can ensure the bathroom remains stylish. This classic combination of black and light grey will look great for decades.'

Embracing tiles in the bathroom is also known for its practicality, so whilst this is certainly an expert-approved design statement, opting for matching bathroom wall tiles and bathroom floor tiles will also make for a highly durable bathroom, as Nicholas explains: 'Tiles, especially ceramic and porcelain, are known for their durability. They're resistant to moisture, which makes them ideal for bathrooms where humidity levels can be high.'

'Maximalist design is about pushing boundaries and making spaces that resonate with personal expression,' says Nicholas. 'The repetitive use of the same tile, even in this bold combination, across all surfaces creates a captivating experience. It's immersive, engaging, and certainly memorable.'

Ashley Tisdale may be a celebrated actress, but her talents expand far beyond the silver screen. 

Instead of enlisting an interior designer when moving into her LA home, Ashley, best known for playing Sharpay Evans in High School Musical, enrolled in Kelly Wearstler's Masterclass before creating a Cali-cool space with an undeniable-Wearstler-inspired twist. And no room showcases this quite like her living room. 

'Warm tones and open windows. I'm in love with how my living room turned out,' Ashley says while describing the neutral space. However, while her color palette is certainly worth the shout-out, it is her fluted wall that has really got designers talking. 

Fluting, or fluted panels, first surged the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and '30s, and it's easy to understand why the interior design trend found fame in this era. Characterized by geometric shapes, these panels epitomize the glamor of this eternally influential design movement – but there is more to this technique than its good looks. 

'Adding a fluted effect helps to extenuate the verticality of the room and makes the space taller or grander,' says Maryland-based designer Esther Chi. In her projects, Esther uses fluting across rooms, starting with the living room, like Ahsley, but also in the entryway and stairwells to create a 'sense of cohesiveness' in the home. 

And Esther is not alone in her support of Ashley Tisdale-inspired fluted trend. 'I am currently working on a project in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with this gorgeous effect,' comments designer and Compass real estate agent Monica Breese. 

'I love wall paneling, but the fluted trend is something I have embraced in some recent designs. It gives dimension to a space. It’s a built-in piece of art.'

Monica, like Esther, also recommends bringing our fluting beyond the living room, into the entryway area, and beyond to allow this feature wall to impress in more than one space.  

'We are currently installing the paneling in a Park Slope townhome and are using a fluted look not only in the living room but also along walls going up the stairs – from the ground floor up to the fourth floor,' she comments. 

'It gives an added detail to the often overlooked space. We also have fluting around the island as an additional detail to complement the kitchen.'

The space has a number of elegant design features, from the mirrored surround to the retro-inspired outdoor floor tiles, creating a luxurious space to relax. Pictured below, we take a closer look at the design of the space. 

‘Nestled atop NYC's skyline, this rooftop terrace exudes effortless sophistication we designed for a private client,’ Wearstler writes in the post’s caption. 

‘We created a mirrored surround to create a more expansive space, while the stone floor pattern adds dynamic interest. Here, unusual plant specimens, curated pottery, and sculptural furniture add style and multiple variations for entertaining. A serene escape from city life, this terrace offers intimate nooks and lively gathering spots, providing an elevated experience in every sense.’

'Taking inspiration from my surroundings has always been an integral part of my creative process, whether it be through the landscape, culture, or history of a place. I instinctively draw inspiration from my environment, and let my personal interests feed into my work. 

'I love to hike in the desert, or simply pick wild flowers, branches and leaves, which I then incorporate in various ways within my interior projects. I live in California and it is a constant source of inspiration for me. 

'My style is American; it’s an inherently Californian, west-coast aesthetic. Surrounded by natural beauty, California living encapsulates a sense of easy elegance and effortless luxury, which are principles I take into each project.'

'I also enjoy sourcing designs and unique items in antique shops, or exploring flea markets to find vintage pieces, when I'm travelling throughout the rest of the world. I believe that the more places you can look to for inspiration, the richer your work becomes.

'Our Malibu home (above and below) is where we spend most quality time as a family on the weekend, so it’s really a very special space. The house itself is right on the beach, which makes for an ideal retreat where we can truly escape and connect with nature – especially during high tide, when it can feel as though we are on a boat as the waves come crashing underneath the house.'

'At the heart of the property is a Ficus tree, which is certainly a favorite feature. The tree is 18 feet tall so it had to be craned into the house, but over the years it has continued to grow towards the sun. Directly above it we have an operable skylight, which allows for both natural light and ventilation to fill the space. 

'Another feature that stands out are the wave-patterned marble walls in the master bathroom, which evoke the undulating movement of the waves. Both of these features bring the outside in, creating a connection with the surrounding space.'

'My interior design for the Broad Beach (Malibu) project shares several aspects with the Malibu property in terms of color palette and materiality, to again create a seamless transition between the interior space and exterior environment. 

'I sourced items from local designers and stores in Los Angeles, such as JF Chen and Base 10 and chose rich, earthy and rustic colors for the furniture to create warmth, with a sandy-hue as a backdrop. Large windows maximize the amount of natural light entering the property, and emphasize the connection with the sea outside.'

'When designing a summer vacation home, I focus on bringing the outside in, and aim to create an effortless flow between spaces. Fitting expansive floor to ceiling windows can be a great way to achieve this; natural light can fully infiltrate the interior, allowing for a seamless transition and connection with the surrounding environment. 

'I favor sun-bleached color palettes to fill the space with warmth, and try to echo the shapes one might find on the beach. I’m also drawn to natural materials, and tend to incorporate wood or marble into the space to reinforce that connection to nature, whilst still bringing a sense of effortless luxury to the home.'

'When redesigning the four-level South California coastal escape at Seal Beach, I wanted to create a dialogue between the interior and the sea outside. Marine references can be found throughout the design, grounding the home in its environment. 

'Deep wood panelling dominates the space, alluding to the interior of a classic sailing yacht, whilst vintage 1960s Italian mohair chairs represent birds on the sand. The colour palette itself reinforces these ties to the sea, through natural, warm and sandy tones of shell pink, soft yellow and rust.'

'For those seeking to evoke a beach house aesthetic and feel, I would suggest it can be achieved by incorporating the shapes, textures and objects that one might find in this environment, and building upon the natural beauty found there. 

'This might be translated in curvaceous forms that are reminiscent of the waves, be it through the grains in marble or rounded furniture. It might also be translated through a warm and earthy color palette that includes beige, terracotta or rustic browns. Integrating raw materials – particularly raw stone and wood – can create an emotive link between the home and nature and work to bring the outside in.'

'A great way to create an instant cue of a warmer climate and summery feel would be to consider using paint. My California Collection for Farrow & Ball (above and below) is informed by the colors seen in the natural beauty of this landscape. 

'For instance, Faded Terracotta (above) was inspired by the rooftops in Southern California, and provides a warm and welcoming tone to a space, or Citrona (below) picks up on the yellow in lemon trees. This collection encapsulates the influence of the outdoors on indoor living, which is so integral to designing a vacation home.'

'Terracotta can be a fantastic color to incorporate into a home with its inherent softness, warmth and naturally welcoming tones; much like the morning sunlight. 

'Beige is another great color to use as a backdrop, with its warm, yellow undertones. Introducing natural materials that share these tonal properties can create an interplay between color and materiality, and amplify the warm-toned light. 

'For instance, choosing brass or copper metal fixtures over cool stainless steel, or rich wood panelling across the walls, as seen in my Broad Beach project.

'Looking ahead, there’s a line up of talent we have planned for my curatorial Gallery platform. New lighting and furniture designs are in development and I also have a super exciting book project launching later this year with publisher Rizzoli which I just can't wait to unveil.'

Kelly Wearstler, the unrivaled maven of West Coast glamor, has just designed a new virtual kitchen concept – and of course – it draws inspiration from the SoCal desert, naturally.

The celebrated interior designer recently collaborated with luxury kitchen appliance company JennAir to create a virtual concept kitchen set in the desert – and while the kitchen offers much to be admired – one statement piece has stolen all our attention: the Burlesque Fridge.

The limited edition piece (so limited, in fact, that JennAir has only produced 13 to date) is designed to be finished with the color panel of your choosing. 

Inspired by Burlesque, the fridge interior is coated in a deep burgundy color and a snakeskin motif that pays further homage to the theme. When paired with the earthy colors in the wider kitchen (seen below), the fridge makes the unrivaled statement Kelly Wearstler intended.

'My partnership with JennAir provides me the freedom to think, without limits, about what a kitchen design could be,' Kelly says. 'This project is a showcase of digital design potential, whether in virtual realities or the web. Responding to the luxurious and avant-garde Burlesque design, I've imagined a unique experience set in the Southern Californian desert.'

Inspired by the velvet interior of an antique jewelry box and the rich leather of vintage luxury cars, the fridge aims to 'elevate appliances to art' – and we'd say it is a success. 

JennAir added a production number to each of the fridges created, so if you're one of the lucky 13 (in this case, 13 is lucky, at least) – you can keep track of the one-of-a-kind showpiece in your kitchen. 

Kelly Wearstler's kitchen concept s a reminder of the kitchen's power in a home – both as a functional space filled with appliances – but also as an intimate area where you can socialize and enjoy the food you have created. 'At the heart of the home, our kitchens are the most intimate spaces,' Kelly says on Instagram. 

'They witness us as we enjoy our espressos before work and then the catch-ups and debriefs afterwards, the casual glasses of wine and conversations we have with our friends, and the patient cooking of a celebratory dinner.'

It's official, Kelly Wearstler just made the process of buying a refrigerator luxurious.

If one figure in the interiors industry can combine California and Christmas, it is Kelly Wearstler. The SoCal-based designer is no stranger to breaking traditions around the calendar – but of course, Christmas is her ultimate canvas for creativity. 

In an unconventional (but certainly unsurprising) unveiling, the award-winner introduced her 'timeless' Christmas garland idea to the West Coast – but her holiday garland is far from traditional. 

The palm-based garland hangs as an oversized statement above the front door to her 1926 Georgian home. 

Like any Christmas decorating idea we'd expect from Kelly Wearstler, the aptly-named Palm, and Princess Pine Holiday Garland is a celebration of California that makes us think about how we can rewrite our own holiday traditions in future.  

'Every holiday season, I have the pleasurable challenge of the reinvention of the holiday spirit at our home. I love to collaborate with my trusted and talented friend, Sophia,' Kelly writes on her Instagram about her 'Exterior Rebellion.' 

This year I wanted to make an oversized statement at the front door that paid tribute to the architectural style of our home, a 1926 Georgian home,' she says. 'We decided to go with the Palm and Princess Pine as a modern take on the holiday garland.'

Kelly adds that the palm complements the architecture of the house and the existing sculptural plants to create a 'flank entrance' that brings the best of the summer and winter seasons together as one. 'Palms are timeless, and we loved the idea of using them as a garland,' she says. 

Those who were waiting for Kelly's take on outdoor Christmas decor ideas were not left disappointed. Interior designer Jeff Leatham and fashion designer Matilda Djerf shared their love for the alternative garland on Kelly's post that she shared with her two million Instagram followers. 

And, while this garland breaks away from the expected – it simultaneously taps into one of the biggest Christmas trends of 2022: Natural Christmas Decor. According to a recent study*, natural decorations are the fifth biggest interior trend of the year after acquiring 529,940 searches (and counting) across Google and TikTok. 

With its organic shape, color, and noticeable lack of glitter, this garland is the perfect way to celebrate California's natural assets, but, of course, we think it would look great far beyond the Golden State, too.

Few would consider swapping rusts, oranges, and yellows for monochrome, metallic, and disco balls. However, few have the ability to break tradition like award-winning designer Kelly Wearstler.

The founder and principal of her eponymously named label is known for her multi-layered, sensory-stimulating design approach – famously exhibited through her sculptural furniture designs and daring color palette (she was the first and only designer to collaborate with paint powerhouse Farrow & Ball, after all). It is, therefore, only natural that her Halloween decor ideas follow suit. 

Knowing how to decorate tastefully for Halloween can often feel like a challenge – especially if your home's color scheme clashes with traditional fall colors. However, this doesn't need to stop you from celebrating the holiday.

With nothing but spray paint (and some disco balls if you truly want to follow Kelly Wearstler's lead), you can reinvent your conventional fall color scheme to ensure it fits your home's style – and make a stylish statement in the process.

‘This display features an avant-garde assemblage of painted pumpkins in mottled monochromatic colors and anomalous shapes and sizes,' Kelly says of her entryway idea on Pinterest. The designer adds that her display '[moves]  beyond the expected Halloween aesthetic' and replaces 'orange hues and carved pumpkins' with a more provocative talking point. 

While the finished result is unlikely to look like any other display you will see this year, the process is not as daunting as it may seem. 

The designer shared the steps behind her aptly-labeled 'avant-gourde entryway’ on her TikTok, in which she spray painted pumpkins on a large piece of paper outside her home. 'I have a lemon tree outside my kitchen window and seeing those bright pops of color makes me smile every morning,' she says. 'Pale yellow walls often feel too dated and bold yellow is not for the faint of heart, Kelly has struck the perfect balance here of softness and brightness; Citrona is a joyful color that won't overwhelm.'

3. Celebrate modern minimalism

NYC-based interior designer Tina Ramchandani, founder of Tina Ramchandani Creative, is a master at decorating with gray and has already brought Kelly Wearstler's Tar into her interiors. But how does it work outside?

'We recently used Tar on the interior of a home, in a specialty finish on a ceiling. It was the perfect dark grey - it has depth, reflects a mood without being too dark, and has a hint of brightness to it,' the designer says. 

'This color translates so well from interior to exterior. On the shell of a home, it will reflect the sunshine and feel modern and minimal while still adding warmth. Even though it's a dark tone, it feels reflective.'

Known for its ability to bring charm and character into the home, vintage decor provides a space with originality and eclecticism. The beauty of decorating with vintage is its ability to translate into any style of home, reflecting the owner's refined and cultivated taste.

We've put together our favorite ways to decorate with vintage, suggested by interior design experts who love to take inspiration from the past.

1. Invest in quality furniture

No home is complete without a collection of lasting furniture. There are plenty of questions to ask yourself before buying vintage furniture, but there's one that's key to consider – what is a piece made from? It's important to always prioritize high-quality materials as these will stand the test of time and prevent future costly repurchases.

'One of my favorite ways to incorporate vintage into my home at the moment is large items of furniture, particularly antique, handcrafted, wood items like tables and armoires,' says interior designer and homeware founder Margo Roth. 'I personally love antique English pine so I often center rooms around a very large item of wooden antique furniture that has a soft neutral color and good texture.'

Vintage furniture trends are constantly changing but the beauty of second-hand pieces is their versatility. There's such a range of furniture styles that all vary in age and design, from mid-century Scandinavian chairs to antique French dressers, the internet makes sourcing second-hand furniture so easy.

Cal Stemp from Studio Sascal sourced a new dining table and pendant light in a recent project (pictured above). To make the room feel more eclectic, she brought in vintage chairs, artwork, and cabinets to 'help the furniture to feel as though it has always been there.' She says vintage pieces 'create layers taken from different periods and help your home to feel as though you have collected it over the years rather than gone out and bought everything new in one go.'

2. Incorporate pattern with vintage rugs and textiles

Inspired by past designs, vintage patterns are one of the easiest ways to bring character into the home as they come in many forms. Whether showcasing a statement tapestry or laying down an antique woven rug, decorating with vintage fabrics is about layering pattern, color, and texture.

'Incorporating patterns and rich colors from vintage rugs or textiles can help create a timeless and inviting atmosphere', says Studio Dorion founders Michelle Ficker and Peter Dolkas.

Decorating with antique textiles is a long-loved technique that brings refinement and coziness to a space. 'I just love that vintage textiles are one-of-a-kind, I’m drawn to the colors and patterns that tell the tales of time,' says Chloe Jonason who creates beautifully handcrafted homewares. 'They have a certain faded elegance which makes them easy to mix and match as the muted colors all work really well together.'

3. Incorporate antique lighting

Vintage lighting ideas have long been popular in home design. From fluted wall sconces to extravagant chandeliers, classic styles are an easy and reliable choice for the home.

Due to their ability to enhance a space with warmth and charm, Michelle and Peter always look out for second-hand lamps or pendants when sourcing vintage decor. They say, 'We’re big fans of incorporating vintage lighting in a space. Fixtures with patina, a timeless shape, and details carry a sense of enduring quality and presence.'

Lucy Tonge, owner of decorative antiques and lighting dealer LCT Home says it's important to find a lighting feature 'that has the same impact when it is off as it does when illuminated.' She adds, 'Decadent and glamorous, function and form, it needs to light a space, but also ignite the imagination.'

Don't be afraid to mix and match your lighting styles. The bedroom (pictured above) features an array of lamps, all unified by the printed soft furnishings.

4. Source eclectic, meaningful trinkets

If you've ever wondered how to make your home more unique, look no further. Meaningful trinkets are important in any home, no matter the style. Whether it's a set of photographs, a handmade vase, or a vintage painting, including personal decor in your scheme is a great way of embracing the popular eclectic look.

Maximalist interiors often feature vintage trinkets because they look great layered together and give a room tons of rustic charm and character. Antique lover Margo says that unique keepsakes and ornaments are an easy way of decorating. 'I think the easiest way to add some vintage flair to a space is by decorating with antique accessories like books, mirrors, pottery, and artwork.'

The world is your oyster when it comes to second-hand keepsakes. Margo has a few go-to pieces she always looks out for when hunting for vintage decor.

She says, 'The number one item that I am addicted to thrifting no matter where I am is a good basket. I love the texture, color, and utility of a basket not only as decor but also as a useful item around the house.' Margo definitely channels maximalist decor ideas, proven by her impressive array of baskets that are hung around the fireplace in her living room (pictured above).

5. Cover walls with vintage art

Decorating with art is a much-loved way of bringing personality into the home. Showcasing the tastes and interests of the owner, vintage art does this and more while providing a room with a dose of character and patina.

Vintager-lover Katie Rosenfeld says, 'I love to use vintage in any capacity but the easiest way for me is in art.' She adds, 'Embrace things with patina and age and imperfection- all of these layered things tell stories, provide warmth, and keep your home from looking like a hotel!'

Sara Hill, Chief Creative Officer at Clarendon Fine Art knows how to decorate with vintage art. She says, 'The most important thing is to choose artwork that you love and that reflects your style. Focus on quality pieces that feel special to you, whether purely traditional or blending old and new styles. Creating a collection that mixes different periods, styles, and sizes allows you to develop a space that feels both personal and curated.'

6. Decorate with vintage kitchenware

You might think that kitchenware typically belongs in the kitchen (and it does) but it's also a form of decor that can lend itself well to neglected surfaces, such as bare walls or empty cabinets and dressers.

There are many ways to turn your kitchenware into decor. Imagine a set of handpainted plates on a dining room wall or a trio of vintage mugs hung above a sink, decorating with vintage kitchenware honors the farmhouse kitchen aesthetic while fulfilling any storage needs.

'There are many places to find wonderful antiques and you don’t need to have a big budget to find pieces which can be restored, re-upholstered, and renewed whether you choose to go to a decorative fair or an auction house,' says Clara Ewart, Head of Design at Kitesgrove.

'Re-purposing one-off pieces of furniture or lighting will also provide a great sense of satisfaction to be continuing the life of an item which may otherwise have been discarded.'

‘I love creating a conversation between the interior and its exterior through materials and textures that speak to the natural beauty of an environment. The intrinsically raw and imperfect nature of these materials not only offers tactile and visual interest but also speaks to the surrounding outdoor environment.’

How to style neutral and organic materials in your home  

Kelly Wearstler explains there are ‘many great ways’ to bring these textures and tones into your home. Firstly, they offer a ‘warm yet quiet backdrop that allows furniture and displayed objects of all colors and materials to really stand out.’ This means you can experiment with more striking furnishings without feeling like they are competing for attention in the space. 

‘For example, surrounding a bold geometric patterned sofa with a beige woven rug, a bleached oak side table, or a cool white marble coffee table allows the sofa space to breathe whilst also framing it within subtle areas of visual interest,’ Kelly says. 

However, there are many ways to ‘add depth and drama to a space’ by using neutral room color ideas and organic materials only. 

‘You could create a strong contrast by juxtaposing textured neutrals,’ Kelly says. ‘For example, the textured natural white oak of my Palma Cabinet, placed next to the curvaceous Morro Lounge Chair in a salty-hued boucle, creates a conversation between two pieces as they offer a striking contrast but also space to breathe.

‘There is something so calming and beautiful in a space adorned with a mixture of different finishes in neutral tones,’ the designer adds.

1. Consider texture first

Whether you are looking for neutral living room ideas or for inspiration in transitional spaces, 'It’s really important that you consider the texture, whether it’s a pattern, such as a jacquard weave in a fabric, or through mixing textures, like a matte wall but a high gloss paint on the ceiling,' says Kelly Wearstler.

'These elements help to create interest that will make the monochromatic neutral room sing.'

2. Add a splash of energy for impact

'If someone wants a room that's very calming, I would say stay completely in the neutral world with a more monochromatic look,' says Kelly. 

'However, if you want a splash of energy, then add in one incredible piece of art, or a colorful rug to create some interest and personality.'

3. Ensure lighting is just right

'Lighting is really important for choosing your neutrals,' advises Kelly Wearstler.

'If a space gets a lot of natural light, I tend to go with lighter neutral shades, and enjoy the beautiful shadowing that will come in throughout the day, creating another layer of texture. 

'In rooms with limited natural light, it’s naturally more moody, so darker neutrals can be really effective.'

4. Bring neutrals into the bathroom

'Many rooms suit the neutral look, but as neutrals are so relaxing, I especially love a monochromatically neutral design for a master bathroom. It will feel very fresh, clean and balanced,' advises Kelly.

5. Know where to shop for neutrals

Interior design is something of an art – and the best schemes are usually created with professional input, though you needn't hire a decorator to get it. We talked to renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler about using scale in interior design. Renowned for her dramatic but liveable schemes, she offers her invaluable insight, below.

1. Use scale to create contrast

'When working with scale in a room, what you’re really trying to do is create a beautiful tension,' says Kelly Wearstler. 'It’s so much more interesting to pair a large sofa with a smaller side table than have everything lined up.'

2. Vary furniture heights

'Looking at heights of furniture is so important. Pair side tables of different heights, a lower one at around 14 inches high with one that’s maybe 26 inches. Having varying heights creates a depth of field and more interest to the eye,' says Kelly Wearstler.

3. Draw attention to a bed

'In bedrooms, if you have a large bed in a room that isn’t too big, pairing it with two really small, delicate side tables will help make a small bedroom feel bigger. 

'For larger bedrooms, beds can seem quite out of scale, so I love to design beds which have a larger piece of upholstery or wood around it, accentuating the furniture, making it appear even wider and ensuring the attention is on the bed as the main element in the room.'

4. Consider hierarchy 

'When I design, I think about hierarchy. What is the largest piece in the room – the sofa? The bed? A piece of art? There’s no wrong or right answer, but once you have your largest piece in mind you can start to think of how to create that contrast with smaller pieces.'

5. Consider lighting when playing with scale

'Lighting is really so important and an excellent way of playing with scale. Oversized chandeliers are a great place to begin, then I love sconces and then having lamps on a table uplighting a sculpture or piece of art.'

• Morentz is a great gallery when it comes to sourcing just about anything, including large sofas and sectionals. They tend to have an array of post-modern designed sofas along with other modular classics by De Sede, Mario Bellini, and Ettore Castelli. They're amazing for sourcing for the odd and peculiar. 
• For statement, lighting I look at Carpenters Workshop Gallery (Vincenzo De Cotiis), Tod Merrell and David Krynauw.

'A taste of the historied Oaxacan hillside, richly spiced with chai, maple, chocolate and burnt rosemary, this Old Fashioned is perfect for a spirited toast to darkening days and the mysteries of life,' says Kelly Wearstler.

'Infuse a bottle of Madre Mezcal with chai teabags for 12 hours. Drip 5oz maple syrup into a mixing glass then pour 0.5oz of the Madre infusion on top followed by three dashes of chocolate bitters.'

Christmas cocktail recipe – an Old Fashioned by Kelly Wearstler

You will need:

• Madre Mezcal 
• Chai teabags 
• Maple syrup 
• Chocolate bitters 
• Rosemary method

Method:  

1. To make the Madre infusion, infuse a bottle of Madre Mezcal with chai teabags for 12 hours 

2. Drip 5oz maple syrup into a mixing glass then pour 0.5oz of the Madre infusion on top followed by three dashes of chocolate bitters. 

3. Add ice three quarters of the way up and stir 

4. Light a sprig of rosemary and top with a rocks glass to capture the smoke inside.

5. Toss two cubes into the smoke-filled glass and strain the mixed drink over top.

6. Garnish with a fresh sprig of rosemary and a dash of soulful luminescence.

What is the recipe for a traditional Old Fashioned?

The recipe for a traditional Old Fashioned is as follows:

1. Mix one teaspoon of sugar (or two of sugar syrup) with a dash of water and two splashes of Angostura bitters until the sugar has dissolved. 

2. Add ice and 60ml of bourbon to the glass and stir. Optional: add a splash of soda water now. 

3. An Old Fashioned usually has a garnish of an orange slice – fresh is fine but we love to dry orange slices for really concentrated, festive flavor.

1. Use an autumnal color palette

The first step to perfectly styling a living room for winter? Color, says Kelly Wearstler.

'Elevate your space with an infusion of alluring autumnal hues and the fiery, golden warmth of the season. Throw cushions in deep earthen colors and sumptuous textures add layers of depth and richness with easy transformation,' she says.

2. Introduce the outdoors with florals

Christmas foliage ideas, are intrinsic to styling a winter living room. 

'Florals in a bold, grounded-spice palette bring an evocative, organic energy and connection to the outdoors inside.'

3. Conjure up warm light and fragrant aromas

The simplest secrets to a cozy living room is often just getting the light levels – and warmth, just right. Similarly, the very best home fragrance can instantly transform a space into one that feels inviting and inspiring.

'Lighting a fire, tall tapers and a warm, fragrant incense heightens the sensory experience beyond spatial to spirited,' says Kelly.

4. Create a focal point for the space

Every successful living room has a focal point. This might be a lit fire in a gorgeous fireplace, or it might be perfected coffee table styling. Or, it might be a decorative element that encourages sociability and togetherness. 

'I love adding a beautiful chess or backgammon set to center around for cozy evenings,' says Kelly.

5. Add layering for comfort

For any space to feel comfortable, it needs layering. This comes with rugs – laid for winter if not for summer – throws, upholstered chairs, floral displays, and even that chess set – all in warm, autumnal shades.

'Layering a patina of fall style instantly uplifts interiors and invites intimate, feel-good gatherings,' concludes Kelly.

How to make Kelly Wearstler's mantelpiece decoration

You will need:

• Four vases of varying sizes and heights
• Young tree branches
• Chestnut, plum and rosehip foliage
• Stones or gravel from the backyard
• Trailing plants, such as amaranth
• Seedheads
• Seasonal blooms

1. Clear the mantelpiece

Artwork can stay – it can add color and layering to your mantelpiece decoration.

2. Place vases on your mantelpiece

'To start, I choose vessels to house the organic vignette,' says Kelly. 'Here, transparent vases in a variety of scale offer range of height and depth and let the entire fall floral fantasy take center stage.'

Fill the vases with water if the plants you are using aren't dried or faux; put handfuls of small stones in the vases to anchor any that are likely to topple – these will help keep stems from moving about too.

3. Add the tallest branches and stems first

Add 'blooming branches – a bountiful mix of chestnut, plum and rosehip – give structure, and framework with raw, moody gestures of statuesque trees,' says Kelly.

Continue building up this first layer of tall planting until you have filled the vases by around half.

4. Build up trailing plants, seedheads and seasonal blooms

Continue to add 'an interplay of greenery and draping, deep purple amaranth add to the alchemy of textures and stunning visual interest,' says Kelly.

5. Finish your mantelpiece decoration with mid-height plants

Continue to add to the mantelpiece decoration until the display is balanced – you will need to step back to take it in from across the room to ensure plants are evenly distributed. Adjust until you are happy with the mix of tall, trailing and mid-height fillers and the distribution of colors.

We are big fans of the flamboyant, eclectic style of Kelly Wearstler – from her sculptural furniture designs to her expressive, liveable interiors and her colorful collaborations. 

In an exclusive interview with Homes & Gardens, she reveals how she achieves that Kelly Wearstler look, mixing vintage and contemporary pieces for a balanced scheme.

1. Don't stick to one-era design

'I am a firm believer in that in every era there is incredible design and I pull from lots of different periods – I love mixing deco, Bauhaus, mid-century; sticking to one era can be a bit one note,' says Kelly. 

'If you buy all your furniture new it’s going to start to look dated quickly, but if you take the time to curate and shop in a variety of places, you end up with a much more timeless room.'

2. Find a balance between vintage and contemporary

'I start sourcing furniture early on in projects, and taking time to find the right pieces makes all the difference. I’m always looking for a balance between vintage and contemporary. If I buy a new sofa maybe I’ll look for a vintage coffee table, so they offset one another.'

3. Don't be afraid of the fade

'There’s nothing I wouldn’t buy vintage – I’ve even installed 1960s carpets before. Vintage carpets can be so beautiful, the fading of the colors and the patina of the rug.'

4. Check online vintage buys carefully

'I always look at quality when buying vintage and how something’s put together. When sourcing online, you have to make sure you know what you’re getting. Ask for a condition report and photos of everywhere even the underside of a table. 

'Checking if there are any labels is important, too – if it’s a classic piece, make sure the label or insignia is attached or intact. And don’t be afraid to bargain and cost reference what you’re buying.

'When buying chairs online, I ask the vendor to have somebody sit in the chair and take photos at all angles. Or if I’m buying a credenza, I ask them to put a lamp on it, and a chair next to it, because it helps with understanding the scale.'

5. Where I shop for vintage

'I visit lots of flea markets and vintage stores. I always go to Round Top in Austin for a big shop! I also love 1stDibs, Brimfield Market, JF Chen, The Future Perfect, Holster Burrows and Pamono. 

'The auction houses I go to are Cambi and Piasa. I love finding pieces by Pierre Paulin, Augusto Bozzi, Gae Aulenti, Tito Angoli and Franco Albini.

Often the first room that guests see when they enter your home, an entryway requires serious wow factor – and nothing transforms this space's appearance as quickly and dramatically as paint. 

With a host of hallway paint ideas and color combinations available, it can be hard to know which shades work best in your space. However, with Kelly Wearstler on hand, the decision is simple. 

After teaming up with paint powerhouse Farrow & Ball, the master of contemporary Californian design showed us her favorite way to make this often small space feel energized and instantly more stylish. 

In a Q&A for Farrow & Ball, Kelly explained that you should use Palm – their fresh green hue – to color drench an entryway. 

'Firstly, paint everything – the ceiling and all the molding,' Kelly shares. 

While the prospect of painting every surface can feel a step too far for some, this method of decorating is quickly becoming a favorite amongst designers and paint experts alike. 

'The beauty of color drenching is that it can be applied to such a variety of different spaces… You can embrace the size of the space to create something that feels really engaging, inviting, and contemporary,' emphasizes Little Greene's Director, David Mottershead. 

After color drenching your hallway? Kelly recommends styling the space with a monochromatic palette – for a timeless aesthetic that will 'make the paint pop.'

'Working in a monochromatic palette is a great way to guide a color scheme if you are nervous,' Kelly adds.

Kelly explains further how she starts a project – by curating a tray of different fabrics and tones to offer inspiration and serve as a reminder of the pieces that fit effortlessly in the space. 

If the thought of drenching your space in one color is slightly too overwhelming, you can still achieve the desired effect by painting similar tones together. David recommends selecting 'a group of tonally coordinating colors and utilizing them across the room' as this showcases the color-drenched style without the bold commitment. 

But which shade works well with Palm? 

Whilst exploring color combinations for rooms, Kelly looks towards Hazy, a subtle blue-gray also from Farrow & Ball's California Collection. This is the So-cal cool combo that will allure all who pass through your entryway because, of course, Kelly Wearstler knows best.  

Creating interiors that are risk-taking, provocative and yet also demonstrate sensitivity to their locality is key to the design approach of American interior designer Kelly Wearstler. 

Her focus is showcased to striking effect in one of her most recent, and personal settings: a once neglected modernist property located on a beach in Malibu which she has used as a base for her own family.

'My Broad Beach project is an amazing, vintage surf shack that I lived in with my family for a summer. I had learned of the property through a friend a few years ago. They told me about how special it was, with its wide beach frontage and historical architecture, but it hadn’t been lived in for years. 

'I wanted to bring life to this home that had been left unoccupied for so long, so I got in contact with the owner and asked if we could rent it for a few months.'

The house had been completed in 1953 and spans an acre across indoor and outdoor space, with access straight to the beach. It has fabulous strongly modernist architectural detailing – such as the Japanese Shoji screens – but needed refurbishment to breathe new vibrancy into the architectural shell. 

Kelly replaced the existing shag pile carpet with seagrass flooring and redecorated throughout with thoughtfully curated furnishings from the huge collection of vintage interior pieces stored in her warehouse in Downtown Los Angeles. 

'I store a collection of designs that I have bought over the years for exactly this kind of project. I incorporated designs from local Los Angeles designers and stores like JF Chen and worked with Los Angeles nursery Inner Gardens to design planting to enliven the patio at the rear.'

Looking to location

An abundance of natural materials, tactile textures and organic details in Kelly’s choice of furnishings echo the geology and elemental nature of the beach front setting, and complement the materiality of the architecture with luxurious, sensual contemporary detailing.

'Drawing inspiration from the local surroundings and environment has always been an essential part of my creative process. Every architectural structure is a direct link to its location, the culture, the history, what is literally outside the door and can be seen from the windows. 

'To truly create an authentic experience within a space it is important to look beyond the interiors to what is surrounding. Good design considers all the contextual fabric, the soul of a place. Without this you could literally be anywhere, creating a formulaic space.'

She also says, 'Working with different artisans and coming up with creative solutions, customizing pieces for clients is also very inspiring. Learning to use different materials and artisanal approaches keeps product design fresh.'

Family matters

'I put the same amount of energy and attention into designing all of my spaces, as I want each one to be a feel-good environment. This time was no different, just that my family was my client, which gave me a great opportunity to make spaces centered around spending quality time together. 

For any fans of Kelly's design aesthetic, the house is a one-stop shop for inspiring living room ideas.

'Broad Beach has such an amazing open-plan element, not just with it being on the beach with views of the ocean from indoors; there is also a large, open-plan family room (above and below) – we spent a lot of time here playing games such as chess, poker and backgammon.'

Just as inspiration-driving for kitchen ideas, this space is Kelly's preferred room in the Malibu beach house.

'Then, the kitchen (below) – which is my favorite room in the home – opens up to the living room, so I could be cooking up a storm, whilst still joining-in and feeling connected with my family.'

Design inspiration

Kelly looks for inspiration everywhere – 'from fashion, art, and graphic design, to travel, nature, architecture and landscape design. I truly believe the more you surround yourself in a variety of sources, will help you discover your own voice and signature style.'

The end result at Broad Beach, although perhaps more neutral than a number of Kelly’s high-profile hotel interiors, remains true to her design ethos of being inspired by and attentive to the life of the client and the location.

'I’ve always believed in staying authentic. My goal is to remain consistent with my core philosophy of creating beauty through thoughtful design,' Kelly says.

Kelly Wearstler has an indefatigable work ethic and a boundary-pushing approach to design. Becoming a global lifestyle brand takes talent and determination, of course, and often a little good fortune as well as judicious networking. Yet these ingredients, alone, are rarely enough to propel a business to its highest potential. 

Kelly Wearstler proves that the path to fulfilling entrepreneurial dreams is much more complex than outward glamor can ever express. In addition to these skills she brings impeccable instincts, self-belief, an indefatigable work ethic and a passionate desire to continually evolve – some of which she shares with H&G here, along with invaluable interior design tips.

From launching her eponymous studio Kelly Wearstler as a solo designer in 1995, Kelly has built a business which, today, employs a team of 50 designers and architects, housed in a studio in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. 

Best known for her show-stopping boutique hotel redesigns, she has also transformed the interiors of restaurants and retail outlets and created aspirational homes, including those of Gwen Stefani and Cameron Diaz. She has authored five interior design books and appeared as a judge on US interior design talent reality TV show Top Design (2007/2008). 

And her prolific creative journey also includes collaborations with other global brands to curate fabric and wallpaper collections, lighting and rug designs, tiling, clothing and jewellery, furniture ranges – including her 2021 Transcendence designs – and most recently a paint range: the California Collection created with Farrow & Ball. 

Design aesthetic

So what is the Kelly Wearstler design aesthetic? It has been rigorously scrutinized for decades in attempts to define her approach and align it within a neat style niche. Some have referenced echoes of mid-century modernism and Hollywood Regency – which are certainly apparent – others have described it as maximalist or ‘uninhibited’ West Coast Glamor but, as with all the memorable names in design history who rebelled against ‘the rules’, Wearstler’s style confounds easy categorization and emulation.

In interview after interview she talks of the importance of taking risks and pushing boundaries and this is echoed again in our communication.

'I naturally gravitate towards a Californian, west-coast aesthetic – a mixture of effortless luxury and natural materials. But I do try not to be restricted by boundaries when it comes to my style, as my aesthetic is always evolving,' says Kelly. 'I love to explore mixology and juxtapositions – taking risks by blending contrasting designs such as old and new, raw and refined, masculine and feminine.'

Her website describes her schemes as provocative. It would be fair to say her interiors demonstrate an eclectic, confident and apparently fearless celebration of color, pattern, scale and ‘the mix’ which together evoke a powerful emotive response.

Destination design

Kelly knew early on that a creative career was her calling. Art was her favorite subject at school, she has always adored fashion and her passion for spotting treasure in thrift and vintage emporiums was ignited in childhood, too. 

'For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to design. From a young age my mother would take me to antique shows and auctions – opening my eyes to the world of design.' 

Kelly goes on to say, 'Interior design is truly my dream job, it incorporates so many of my passions – pattern, texture, fashion, architecture, art history, sculpture, light and movement.'

Working towards the dream 

Born to young parents – aged just 17 and 18 – with roots she describes as working class, Kelly was surrounded by strong, working women. They taught her that nothing comes easily and inspired her with the impetus to forge her own path.

'My mother and the women in my family each supported my independence and creative journey, instilling a strong work ethic that helped me to develop my personal style,' says Kelly

Despite a happy childhood in Myrtle, South Carolina, Kelly was keen to experience life in a more international setting and moved to Boston to enrol at Massachusetts College of Art. Here she achieved a bachelor's degree in interior and graphic design, taking additional classes in architecture and waitressing in the evenings to self-fund her education. 

She secured internships at Cambridge Seven Associates in Boston and the respected graphic and interior design studio Milton Glaser in New York. 

On graduating she moved to Los Angeles and worked briefly as a production assistant on film sets but knew she wanted to be her own boss and create interiors so made the leap to found her eponymous firm in 1995. She worked again as a waitress in the evenings whilst her design business grew organically and by word of mouth. 

At first the focus was residential. A personal introduction led to a commission to decorate the house of then real estate developer Brad Korzen (whom she later married in 2002). Brad Korzen is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles-based Kor Group which was founded in 1999.

But her truly big break might be said to be her first hospitality project in 1999; the interiors of the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Design heroes

It is perhaps, then, little surprise, that some of her design heroes were also known for following their own instincts and defying convention.  

'A few of the more well-known designers that have had an impact on me are Ettore Sottsass and Gio Ponti because they really pushed the boundaries of the time they were living in,' Kelly says, going on to reveal, 'Designs that explore a clever use of materiality, juxtaposition of styles from a range of eras, and risk-taking aesthetics appeal to me most.'

The Met Museum described Italian designer and rule-breaker Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) as a Design Radical in its 2017 exhibition of his work. Giovanni ‘Gio’ Ponti (1891-1979), the Milanese architect of more than 100 buildings, who was also a furniture designer, teacher and publisher of Domus magazine was equally widely regarded for his avant-garde approach.

Staying curious

One senses that, like her design heroes, Kelly’s heady, sensual yet carefully curated blend of styles, eras and mediums comes from an energetic – even restless – and intellectually-curious mind. 

She speaks of seeking out ‘the anomalies’, of finding the undiscovered artists and artisans and of a continuing desire to ‘push’ and evolve. Her home is her creative laboratory and, endearingly, her desire to continue to hone and educate her ‘eye’ seems as potent as ever. 

'I do think your voice and aesthetic is a constant work in progress, always being shaped and informed by new surroundings, voices, art, music,' Kelly says. 

When asked for her design superpower she also reveals, 'My design superpower would be that I never repeat myself. Each project is individual and has its own story.'

A pivotal moment

'Creating my MasterClass was a dream project. The whole experience really pushed me to evolve in an unexpected way and that is what life is about. If you have a true passion for something I believe you can do anything you put your heart, soul and mind into.'

Kelly Wearstler was the first interior designer to be featured on the MasterClass platform.

Current projects

Hotels continue to be a significant focus. Downtown LA Proper (above) – the fourth Proper hotel designed by Kelly Wearstler, is soft launching in August 2021. The Broad Beach residential project was also recently completed. 

Studio specialism

'We are really multi-disciplinary and diverse and can take on any project. Just this year we completed our first conceptual design by imagining a home for the new Hummer EV,' says Kelly.

Kelly is a board member for Desert X produced by the Desert Biennial – a not-for-profit charitable organization – it was set up with the aim of creating 'public exhibitions of art that respond meaningfully to the conditions of desert locations, the environment and indigenous communities; promoting cultural exchange and education programs that foster dialogue and understanding among cultures and communities about shared artistic, historical, and societal issues; and providing an accessible platform for artists from around the world to address ecological, cultural, spiritual, and other existential themes.'

Designed from the ground up by longtime Ace collaborators Roman and Williams, Ace Hotel Brooklyn is a 287-room boutique hotel and cultural hub located in Boerum Hill on the cusp of Downtown Brooklyn. 

Open, spacious and welcoming, the hotel’s design nods to Brooklyn’s complex fabric of communal and creative spaces, with an animated public lobby and indoor-outdoor portals that ease into the city’s edges. 

The guest rooms pair floor-to-ceiling windows with original artwork by local fiber and textile artists — with some higher floors offering a 360º panorama of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty.

2. Arlo Midtown, New York

If you like your hotels with a side order of old Hollywood glam meets industrial cool, bookmark Arlo Hotels' newest Manhattan property, Arlo Midtown. 

Located between the excitement of Times Square and Hudson Yards, Arlo Midtown features 489 guest rooms and suites and boasts warm and inviting interiors by renowned New York-based design studio Meyer Davis, whose team drew inspiration from the nearby Garment District and its history of makers. 

Five dining options from the award-winning Gerber Group are slated to open in September 2021, including an urban garden escape perched atop the 26th floor.

3. Proper Downtown LA, California

With city lights and vintage brick as backdrop, Proper re-imagines and updates a landmark in the heart of the Fashion District into a148-room destination hotel. 

The creative vision of Kelly Wearstler seamlessly blends past and present with compelling design, vintage influence and local art. 

Essentials include two restaurants led by James Beard award-winning LA chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Stynn, (Lucques, AOC, Tavern), an intimate lounge, and a city-view rooftop pool and lounge-bar-restaurant.

There's also two one-of-a-kind suites, Especially Proper, fashioned from the basketball court and indoor pool of the building's sporting club past.

4. ModernHaus Soho, New York

Formerly The James Hotel, the all-new 114-room ModernHaus SoHo draws heavily from the art heritage of the surrounding neighborhood, the property features a one-of-a-kind art collection including dozens of paintings and sculptures from the likes of Alexander Calder, Hans Hartung, George Condo, Harland Miller, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hofmann, Nicolas Party, and Kaws. 

Interior designer Melissa Bowers was tapped for the project, focusing on a minimalist perspective that allows the energy of the surrounding urban environment to take a prominent role. Inspired by the Bauhaus art movement of the beginning of the 20th century, ModernHaus SoHo’s design focuses on clean lines, geometric harmony, and large windows. 

Veranda, a signature restaurant from Michelin-starred chef George Mendes, is set in a greenhouse-like glass enclosure with a fully retractable roof that allows for al fresco dining.

The project also sees the return of the iconic nightlife venue, Jimmy, and its stunning rooftop and pool deck with 360 views of lower Manhattan. On the property's second floor, there's also a breakfast and cocktail bar called Jumpin Jacks, offering a high-end coffee program and all-day lighter fare by day, and an intimate lounge in the evening.

5. The Dupont Circle, Washington DC

The Dupont Circle hotel opened its doors on 14 April 2021 following a large-scale renovation. This transforming refurbishment includes a cutting-edge bar and restaurant designed by internationally-renowned Martin Brudnizki, alongside a new lobby and penthouse suite realized by trailblazing Irish designer Clodagh – known for her trademark ‘life-enhancing minimalism’.

Clodagh poured her Irish sensibilities, and a touch of nostalgia, into the design of the new Penthouse Suite and the hotel’s lobby - reflecting low-key, relaxed luxury that was inspired by her childhood in the West of Ireland.  

All of the guest rooms have been redesigned to echo the newly launched spaces, oozing contemporary chic and relaxed comfort with natural materials and soothing earth tones. A stunning selection of art, personally selected by Mrs Gallagher has been installed throughout the hotel, including works by celebrated Irish sculptor John Behan and legendary American actor turned photographer Dennis Hopper.

When it's time for a bite? The Doyle Bar boasts chic mid-century interiors and leafy terraces complete with wood panelling, fireplaces, and extensive use of brass and leather, the lounge-like space feels like a private club.

Get excited because the new Farrow & Ball x Kelly Wearstler collaboration is set to land online this week – and it’s eight gorgeous new colors full of the joys of spring. The range is called The California Collection, is the first palette created by an external designer since the paint company’s founding in 1946, and is launching during the brand’s 75th year of business. 

The beautiful new hues will have you reaching for the roller, and are all inspired by the landscape of California (from its lemon and palm trees and blue skies to its salty sea air) and the Pacific’s soft-sand beaches.

Kelly Wearstler’s love of color has been a hallmark of her career, and she has used Farrow & Ball in her projects for more than two decades. Her debut collection will live as its own palette and effortlessly complement the carefully curated hues of the existing line of 132 colors. Underpinned by the Farrow & Ball ethos of sustainability, each shade is eco-friendly, low-VOC, water-based, and beautifully packaged in a recyclable tin. 

Kelly says: 'I always say living without color is like living without love, so it’s been a dream to partner with Farrow & Ball on a collection of paint that celebrates the emotions color can evoke.

‘Color is the spirit of a room, and provides expressive power to transform a space with your personal voice, whether you’re painting all of your walls, or just one.’

The palette presents a series of harmonious colors that represent a variety of moods, such as the earthy feel of Citrona, the muted dreamlike state of blue-grey Hazy, the fresh green of Palm, or the easygoing warmth of Faded Terracotta.

In keeping with Wearstler’s belief that ‘black and white are colors too,’ the palette also includes tone-setting neutrals in the form of Tar, an off-black; Sand, a warm white with depth and complexity; and Salt, a bright, crisp white reminiscent of the crystalline layer left behind by the winds of the Pacific Ocean.

The California Collection is rooted in Kelly Wearstler’s belief that colors found in nature resonate on a visceral level, providing a sense of serenity, an innate recognition, and a feeling of belonging in the surrounding environment. 

In crafting the palette, she was inspired by the light of the Pacific and the landscape of California, resulting in a modern, American continuation of the Farrow & Ball tradition of celebrating colors in the local landscape.

1. Citrona

Inspired by the lemon trees that thrive in California’s temperate climate, this softened citrus shade is an earthy, contemporary take on true chartreuse. 

2. Palm

This fresh green is a love letter to the iconic palms that dot the Los Angeles skyline. It has a desaturated quality, as if always being seen in the clear, bright light characteristic of California, that makes it perfect for a green kitchen or hallway.

3. Hazy

This muted blue-grey is inspired by the marine layer that brings drifts of dreamy fog inland, capturing the fresh feeling of early mornings on the coast.
