Hammered copper pots could also be good for adding interesting texture. Alternatively, chrome silver pots would create a more modern look.

‘Teal is perfectly balanced; it is neither too warm nor too cool, meaning it is the ideal color to create an enveloping and intimate feel,’ sums up Ruth Mottershead, Little Greene’s creative director. ‘With a teal color, don’t dismiss darker shades, as when used all over, darker teal colors can exude a cozy, cocooning quality and harness the character of a room.’

'These can contribute to cohesive and organized space planning, all while enhancing the room's bright and spacious ambiance,' he says. And, if it's good enough for Jenner, we're not going to argue with that.

The slumber expert expands on the importance of layering and how this can help us sleep better. 

'One of my favorite ways to achieve hygge in the bedroom is by layering. Think cushions and throws that add warmth and texture,' she says.

'You can have a lot of fun with contrasting different materials, which makes your bed the focal point of the room. My only advice is don’t go overboard with the cushions or decorative elements. Less can be perfect in your pursuit of rest and relaxation. Just stick with a very select edit focusing on tactility and comfort.'

As mentioned, decorating with neutrals, much like Jenner, is the perfect starting point when tapping into the hygge aesthetic – but that doesn't mean we should limit our color palette. 

'The best color schemes to build upon for a hygge look are soft neutrals. It makes sense, if you think about it, that nature-derived colors are key to a cozy and relaxed environment. Don’t let this stop you from experimenting with other colors to personalize your space, though,' Ross notes.

'Soft greens, blues, lavenders, and pinks are all great complimentary options. Another tip is to incorporate natural materials into your layers and then build accents with  plants, seashells, or wooden features – bringing the outside in helps to make the space feel more inviting.'

Not just a design trend for modern luxury homes, metallics are surprisingly versatile and can fit into a range of homes, from urban to pastoral.

'They also look surprisingly at home in more traditional schemes, and I have seen them work really well in country houses, where the bronze or gold finishes have been paired with bold floral wallpapers or simple striped wallpapers to give an opulent feel,' says Phil.

Overall, the bathroom is the perfect place to try out new styles and trends, even in the most minimalist home. 'People seem to be experimenting more with pattern and color again in the bathroom, which is great to see as the results can be really stunning,' says Phil.

Tinsel, arguably the most controversial of all Christmas decorations, knows how to divide opinion. In the 1950s, tinsel was so popular that it was used more than Christmas lights (because they were seen as less of a fire hazard). Of 500 people surveyed by YouGov, a quarter (25 percent) admitted they had negative or very negative feelings towards tinsel despite it still making Christmas trends. 'An inexpensive but festive classic, tinsel can often be found all over the home to bring that extra sparkle,' comments Woods Furniture's Charlie English.

According to Charlie, tinsel omits a 'fun and carefree' energy that looks lighthearted on our Christmas tree and mantel. However, it has its place in the dining room, too. 

'For those who decide that tinsel will make its way from the tree to the dinner table and around the chairs ahead of Christmas dinner, you’re probably in for fun festivities. Your family decided they don’t want to conform to contemporary traditions as more is always more, and this is the best time of year to let your hair down.'

'When it comes to adding Christmas decor to a room with neutral tones that aren't used to bold colors, there are some techniques I've found very effective,' she comments. And her advice translates to homes of every size beyond Los Angeles. 

First off, focus on special accent pieces instead of just piling stuff around. One showstopper item, like a cool couch or light fixture, will draw people in better than a bunch of little things that keep the room's calm style alive.'

As mentioned, Kendall has opted for raw, organic decorations where possible (firstly, with her Christmas tree, but also in her garland). Keely recommends pairing these decorations with more plants that ensure the space feels entirely green and neutral. 

'Plants are a lifesaver – their natural look adds warmth without dominating,' she says. Something big like a hanging pot or tall plant creates a nice atmosphere. Plus, they stick around after Christmas, too.'

Another approach is using texture instead of color. Patterned walls, rugs, throws – that sort of subtle detail adds great visual interest. Soft fabrics are also great for balancing out minimalist living room styles.'

Lastly, the right lighting is one of the most powerful tools we can use to ensure our home feels equally ambient and chic over the festive period. 

'Strategic lamps or a nice hanging light above a plant or couch bring just the right glow. Putting it all together – unique centerpieces, greenery, texture, and lighting - lets you feel festive without sacrificing your style. With those techniques, you can celebrate the season delicately in calmer spaces.'

Interior design Henriette Von Stockhausen, creative director, of VSP Interiors, shares Kendall's penchant for decorating with brown and other warm neutrals.

‘For me, neutrals such as taupe are grounding wall colors. It’s important to remember that sometimes a classic interior is just the ticket: calm colors, gentle schemes, traditional furniture, and antiques – no pattern clashes, no huge color pops, just comfort and a quiet space to relax in.'

A dark neutral base will create a modern look while retaining classic elements. The trick is to turn up the texture to stop the space from feeling flat. 

When decorating for warmth and comfort, color is a transformative tool, but be sure to introduce plenty of texture, too. The secret is layering – bringing visual interest through the combination of different fabrics, finishes, materials, and textures.

When it comes to soft furnishings, texture in interior design is your friend, so think about mixing materials like jute, velvet, and linen to add depth.’

'If I’ve got a calm color scheme, then I focus on texture to bring different layers of interest,' says interior designer, Tamsin Johson. 'You have to think about how to introduce variations and things that feel different to the touch without just focusing on color, and often that creates a more interesting scheme.'

Natural textures, whether they are stone, wood, or linen, can help to anchor a neutral color scheme. It means that the overall look doesn’t feel too contrived uptight or overly designed. They bring a laid-back quality that always works well.

The love for Zellige tiles is long-lived to say the least (these pieces have existed in some form since the 10th century, after all), but Kendall Jenner has just given us another reason to get excited about this timeless style. 

The model's powder room has revived this Moroccan classic once again, emphasizing the tile trend that has already dominated conversations among designers in recent years. This time, her colorway is set to be the talk of 2024, and we can understand why. 

Created by Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Waldo Fernandez, Kendall's powder room features deep green Zellige tiles (from Badia Design)  – and it's a hue that demands attention. These jewel-toned tiles are a dramatic twist on the traditional Zellige, and, as experts explain, we can expect to see more of these hues going forward. 

'Zellige tiles are trending because of their craftsman-like handmade qualities. Homeowners are drawn to the variance in the finishes – every tile is unique – bringing an earthy, natural feeling that personalizes any space,' says designer Courtney Wollersheim.

But what makes green such a dominant color trend for the year ahead? 'Green zellige tile is the perfect choice for adding a calming, artistic look to your space,' she adds. We particularly love Kendall's deep emerald-hued pieces, but as Courtney suggests, any shade of green has longevity when curated correctly.

'Contrast the unevenness of the green tones and clay texture by installing 3x8 zellige tile vertically in a straight stack and choose a soft neutral grout to allow the tile to shine.' she adds.

Plus, Courtney is not alone in her design trend prediction forecast. Tile makers Ca' Pietra also celebrated the Zellige-style in their recent trend report for 2024, explaining that tiles inspired by 'world travels' will play a part in our bathrooms and powder rooms in the year ahead. They recommend taking Kendall's space one step further and tiling our floors with a tile that is inspired by our travels – whether that's a Moroccan Zellige or a Portuguese Azulejo.  

'Bathroom walls can absolutely be in on this one, but the focus is bathroom flooring, grounding your space in the sense of elsewhere so you can literally step foot into Andalusia, Cuba, Morocco, or wherever your imagination feels at its happiest,' they say.
