Beyond that, it’s a rather clever small-space lighting solution for my studio, or any other small living room or bedroom. Because when your coffee-table real estate is already committed to stacks of books, candelabras, artfully chosen coasters, and a vase of fresh blooms, your workaround for the big light has to go somewhere. The wall, after all, is sitting right there.

Going beyond the basics of overhead lighting is what's going to give you that warm, inviting feeling that's all the more important as we go into fall and winter. The key to living room lighting is layering; it should provide a soft, enduring glow to each and every corner of the space.

On the flip side, living rooms that rely on one light source, neglect color temperature, or lack technical solutions feel stark, fall flat, and almost always lack the appeal that cozy living spaces naturally exude. These are the five biggest living room lighting mistakes you should avoid, no matter your interior design style or square footage.

1. Relying on Recessed Lighting

The big light debate is always an ongoing one, but regardless of your stance, you can never rely on just one overhead lighting source in a living room. Whether it's in the form of recessed spotlights or a single pendant light, it almost always feels stark and severe in rooms designed for relaxing.

'The fastest way to kill a living room vibe is by relying on overhead lighting,' says interior designer Jennifer Jones of Niche Interiors. 'Whether it's recessed cans or one singular fixture. Recessed lights cast unflattering shadows and often have a cooler color tone.'

Instead, scatter multiple types of light, whether that be lamps, pendants, or sconces. The first 'layer' should be ambient lighting, which illuminates the entire room. Next comes task lighting, which can be used to create cozy spots for reading or playing games. The final layer (the fun part) is accent lighting, which crowns the scheme. For example, a wall sconce above a nook or a portable table lamp gracing a side table.

2. Choosing the Wrong Color Temperature

Don't forget lighting temperature basics. 'I see this a lot, and it's a very simple tweak to make the space look warmer and more inviting vs. harsh, bright daylight temperature,' says Izabela Marino, Director of Interior Design and Associate Principal, GKV Architects. 'I tend to keep the bulbs in living rooms at 2700K and keep the color temperature cohesive throughout the space.'

'Pay attention to the tones of the room,' adds Betsy Traube, founder of Modern Remains Studio. 'If the color schemes of the room are warmer, pair that with a warmer light temperature, and vice versa. If there is natural light coming into the room, then a great way to layer in appropriate color temperature lighting is to use 3000 Kelvin (close to natural light) color temperature for the overall lighting.'

'Again, if the color scheme is warmer, you can always use warmer bulbs for lamp lighting and create a cozier feel in the evening hours. The mistake you want to avoid here is losing the effect of fabrics and textures chosen specifically for the space by not lighting it at its best.'

3. Not Using Dimmer Switches

'Not using dimmers on light fixtures prevents you from turning the space from a bright light to ambient, intimate dinner lighting. It is one simple upgrade all rooms can benefit from,' says Izabela.

'Layers of light, on dimmers and separate circuits, will allow you to switch between bright light needed for cleaning to softer levels for a relaxing mood,' says Sally Storey of John Cullen Lighting on creating the right mood.

'Start by swapping out the light bulbs with warmer versions in the 2,700-3,000 K range and always use a dimmer to tone down the brightness,' advises Jennifer. 'Layer in ambient lighting closer to eye level – shaded table lamps and floor lamps placed evenly throughout a room will provide a soft, even glow and encourage relaxation.'

4. Neglecting Scale

Scale in interior design is always important. In the case of lighting, it can make all the difference between a scheme that feels well-balanced and one that feels mismatched and awkward.

Wall lights should accent your living room rather than dominate, while pendants should catch the eye but not overwhelm the space. 'A common living room lighting mistake is to use incorrectly scaled decorative fixtures,' says Betsy. 'This can be a huge distraction to the overall space. I have been in homes where the decorative fixtures are so large that they end up becoming similar to a flush mount in order to fit the space. Similarly, fixtures that are too small can disappear and lose the desired effect.'

'Take stock of the decorative fixtures and see if they are doing their jobs. Are the lamps incorrectly placed to be effective? Is the chandelier scaled correctly?' adds Betsy.

5. Sticking To One Level of Lighting Throughout the Day

'All too often living room lighting tends to be a single pendant light, this kind of lighting blankets a space with one kind of illumination which can often be too harsh,' advises Tom Rutt, founder of TR Studio. 'Having a mix of lighting at different levels and ideally on dimmers will allow flexibility so that the amount of light or the direction of the illumination can be adjusted depending upon the time of day.'

Consider how the light changes throughout the day when considering where to position lamps. You want to create impact without overdoing it. If you've ever asked yourself 'how do I make my living room cozy with lighting?' the answer lies in various levels of lighting.

'Think about flexible light sources for different situations: a floor light with a swivel arm is ideal as an evening reading lamp behind a sofa or chair, says Hollie Moreland, creative director of David Hunt Lighting. 'Remember that shade colors can affect the mood of a room, so for added ambiance, choose darker moody tones which will feel cozier.'

The majority of people would consider the meal to be the most important part of a dinner party. But for me – a design-obsessed style editor – it's, of course, the decor. I'm all about color schemes, layering, and little details that make a tablescape come to life – my favorite detail being lighting. I come from the school of thought that believes no tablescape is complete without little light ideas – they bring the ambience. You know ‘unexpected red,’ the theory that a singular jolt of the hue can wake up any room, but have you heard of ‘unexpected chrome’? Target’s latest portable lamp has all the old-timey library trappings, down to the fluted dome shade, in a surprising silvery finish. It’s given me fodder for a new theory, and possibly the coolest thing you could put on a coffee table this fall.

It's an odd pairing on paper. The Double Metal Portable Lamp taps two of 2026’s biggest lighting trends at once: anything old (vintage, thrifted, scoured, sourced) and chrome, more often the domain of ultra-minimal, super-sleek, vaguely Scandi design. We almost never see the two together. Hence: unexpected chrome.

A flash of silver on dark wood does something surprisingly striking as the days slowly darken. Brushed nickel catches and throws light like a mirror, a tactic I’ve tried and loved myself (there’s a chrome tray sitting on my entry table as I write). I find the effect more ethereal and nuanced than the, at this point, clichéd-to-death pop of red.

This unusual lighting is even better if you’re a vintage person. Amid all the gold and brass you’ve spent years collecting: bam – silver. It’s enough of a foil to feel fresh without looking like it wandered in from someone else’s house. Mixing metals, by the way, is not the faux pas you think it is. Designers I’ve interviewed assure me the tension only makes a room look richer. 'Brass overload,' on the other hand? Quite tired.

This is chrome for people who aren’t really chrome people. It has the old-world silhouette for anyone finding brass a little too trad, without going full space-age chrome for those of us not quite ready to identify with the hardcore Brutalist wave.

Making a kitchen feel stylish and inviting looks different through the seasons. In the summer, it's all about letting natural light take the lead and creating a connection between indoors and out. But for fall, it's all about adding warmth. And one of the most impactful ways to do it is through your kitchen lighting. Blending functional needs with atmospheric design, even the most subtle lighting alterations can take your kitchen from harsh to warm.

With the 'ber months in sight, now is the perfect time to update your kitchen lighting to create a warm and cozy (yet still functional) space for fall. Here's how designers infuse much-needed warmth through small but impactful lighting changes.

Unlike other rooms in the home, your kitchen lighting needs to be functional for food prep, cooking, and cleaning. But it also needs to adapt for other uses, whether it's hosting, socializing, or even relaxing after a long day. With varied needs, your lighting scheme needs to work harder and be more versatile to avoid a cold, sterile atmosphere. And designers say there are a few key culprits causing harsh lighting.

'A kitchen can start to feel harsh when it relies too heavily on one type of lighting, especially bright overhead recessed lights. Cooler bulb temperatures, too many ceiling fixtures, and a lack of dimmers can make a space feel more clinical than inviting. Kitchens also have so many hard, reflective surfaces, so the wrong lighting can easily amplify that,' explains Kailee Blalock, Co-Founder of House of Hive Design Co.

'Most kitchens are lit entirely from the ceiling. Every source is overhead, so you get shadows under the wall cabinets, shadows on people’s faces, and a dark band around the perimeter of the room. The finishes can be beautiful, and the space still reads flat,' agrees Michael Winn, Owner and Principal at WINN Design + Build.

But more often than not, it's the bulbs that cause the most coldness in a kitchen, specifically the temperature. When we think of warm lighting, there's usually more of an orange glow than a white or blue one – a detail that depends on the bulb temperatures you introduce. 'A lot of kitchens get built with recessed lights at 3500K or 4000K, which is closer to office lighting than home lighting. Put that above a polished quartz counter, and all of it bounces straight back at you,' Michael explains.

'Bulbs rated high on the Kelvin scale (4000K to 5000K+) emit a stark, blue-toned light similar to commercial or office lighting. While high Kelvin ratings work well for intense task zones, in a residential kitchen they drain the warmth from cabinetry, wash out natural wood tones, and create unflattering shadows,' adds Shannon Kadwell, Kitchen and Bath Director at Anthony Wilder Design Build.

A lot of these details don't become obvious until you reach the darker, colder months, as you rely less on lighting during the summer when natural daylight does all the heavy lifting. But as soon as those darker evenings draw in, stark or underwhelming lighting will become glaringly obvious. For Pooky's Chief Creative Officer, Jo Plant, a successful kitchen lighting scheme ahead of fall is about a balance of function and ambiance. 'The key is to avoid treating kitchen lighting as purely functional; it should add atmosphere as well as provide practical illumination.'

5 Ways to Make Your Kitchen Lighting Warmer for Fall

The slow shift from summer to fall is one of the most noticeable in our homes, especially as evenings grow darker and light disappears much sooner. And as a functional and social space, your kitchen lighting is one of the first details you need to adapt for the season. 'As we move into fall, kitchen lighting becomes particularly important,' says Jo.

'As the days get shorter and natural light starts to fade earlier, a kitchen that felt bright and welcoming in summer can suddenly feel quite stark.' It's easy to give your kitchen lighting a warmer, cozier update for fall. It doesn't require a full replan, nor does it need to cost a fortune – the subtle changes are the most impactful. These are the 5 worth trying this year.

1. Switch to Warmer Bulb Temperatures

One of the key elements that makes your kitchen lighting feel harsh is using bulbs that are too bright and too cool-toned. As we head towards fall, swapping these harsher bulbs out for softer, warmer alternatives makes a huge difference to the atmosphere of your cooking space.

'To instantly soften the space, shift your bulbs down to a lower color temperature – specifically around 2400K to 2700K. A 2400K bulb delivers a rich, golden warmth that closely mimics the cozy glow of traditional incandescent bulbs,' Shannon explains. 'Swapping overhead recessed cans or under-cabinet task fixtures to this warmer range transforms the kitchen’s ambiance, making island seating and open-plan prep areas feel inviting as the days grow shorter.'

2. Look to Lower-Height Lighting

'The move most people skip is light below eye level. Undercabinet strips, a pair of sconces, even a small plug-in lamp at the end of a counter. Low light is what makes a kitchen feel like a room instead of a workspace,' says Michael.

'A great option is to add a lamp on the countertop that has a fun shade and keep it on through the winter. It feels really lovely to have a lamp lit during those darker afternoons and evenings and invites you into the space,' adds interior designer Jess Cooney.

3. Take Note of Bulb Types and Styles

While the temperature of the light bulbs you choose is an important factor to consider when swapping to warmer lighting for fall, so are the bulb types. It seems like such a minor detail, but one that changes the way light diffuses around the kitchen.

'As we transition into fall, swap out standard glass or exposed-bulb fixtures for LED filament 'Edison' bulbs. Modern LED Edison bulbs combine energy efficiency with classic aesthetic appeal, offering clear or amber-tinted glass and visible glowing filaments,' Shannon explains.

It's one of those details that instantly makes your kitchen lighting feel more considered and design-led. It's a bit like swapping out your outlet and switch plates for something more elevated. 'They emit a deep, cozy amber radiance that pairs beautifully with autumnal textures, rich cabinet finishes, and natural stone countertops,' she adds.

4. Consider Putting Kitchen Lighting on Dimmers

If there's one piece of advice designers always give, it's to put kitchen lighting on dimmers. It's the easiest and most effective way to take your lighting scheme from functional to ambient, bright to softly moody.

'Dimmers are another simple but transformative addition, allowing you to turn the brightness down as the evening progresses and instantly shift the mood from practical to atmospheric,' says Jo. Although this is a step to consider during a larger project, it's one experts say you won't regret. And for maximum impact, avoid putting every light in the kitchen on one switch.

'Our designers separate the ceiling lights from the pendants and the under-cabinet lighting so you can run the room at thirty percent on a Tuesday night without lighting it like you’re prepping Thanksgiving dinner. If you’re replacing fixtures anyway, look at dim-to-warm LEDs. They drop towards 2200K as you dim them, the way an incandescent used to,' Michael advises.

When the overhead lighting is on a dimmer, you can utilize different light sources throughout the day, and let decorative lighting take over. 'As the days get shorter, we naturally start relying less on bright overhead lighting and more on the decorative and ambient layers. We’ll dim the ceiling lights and let pendants, sconces, and other smaller fixtures create pockets of warmth throughout the room,' says Kailee.

'We love when a kitchen feels a little moodier in the fall! You still need functional task lighting when cooking, but the entire room doesn’t need to be illuminated at the same intensity.' 5. Create a Layered Approach

Fall conjures images of cozy interiors, and nothing brings that feeling to life quite like layered kitchen lighting. 'The easiest way to soften a kitchen is to introduce more layers of light. Rather than relying solely on ceiling spots or a central pendant, combine practical task lighting with softer, ambient sources. Wall lights, under-cabinet lighting and small table lamps can all help to create pockets of warmth and make the room feel more inviting,' says Jo.

'Layering is particularly effective at this time of year. Keep your brighter task lighting available for cooking and food preparation, but switch to softer pools of light when you’re entertaining or settling in for the evening. It’s these smaller, lower-level sources that create that lovely cocooning feeling we all crave as the nights draw in.'

Your kitchen walls are a great way to bring in a new layer of lighting – an area that is often overlooked. 'Any spot you can add a sconce really creates a soft enveloping feel in the evening when you are sitting and having a cup of tea at your breakfast table,' says Jess. But you can also look beyond the obvious kitchen fixtures and introduce softer lighting more typical of a living room or bedroom.

'Incorporating picture lighting above artwork helps to make spaces feel more intimate, warm, and personal,' says Kelly Emerson, Senior Designer at Aidan Design. 'Investing in unique table and floor lamps with warm shades and warm color temperature bulbs will certainly bring a fall refresh you’re looking for! Any chance to layer multiple sources of lighting will bring sophistication and mood.'

Taking a layered approach to kitchen lighting as we head towards fall works because it can be easily edited as seasons change, rather than being suitable for just one quarter of the year. 'One of our favorite things about a layered lighting plan is that you can change the feeling of the kitchen seasonally without actually changing the design. In summer, natural light can take the lead; in fall and winter, the warmer decorative lighting becomes much more noticeable and creates that cozy, intimate feeling,' Kailee notes.

While kitchen lighting is functional, it's also a decorative detail that can make or break the entire mood of the room. As fall approaches, it's all about coziness and warmth – two things the right lighting can create effortlessly.

I’ve recently come to the realization that all of the portable lamps I own, despite being 'normal-sized,' are actually oversized for my Manhattan apartment. This fall, I’d prefer not to negotiate space with my tea while I work on my laptop. (Or worse, turn on the big light just to reclaim enough counter space to make dinner.) So, I'm downsizing.

At this price, I’m considering swapping my bulkier portable lights for Takadas throughout, freeing up surface space for all the other seasonal layering bits I intend to bring to the party. Because if I’m not outnumbered by taper and pillar candles ten to one, this California girl is not mentally surviving that first sting of East Coast cold.

From the moment I moved into my New York City studio apartment, I knew that lighting the place would be a challenge. One large room with no overhead light source meant that I was basically working with a blank canvas – and that I had to get creative with my lighting ideas.

I began with table lamps; placing one on my dresser and another on my desk. Then, I positioned a floor lamp in the sliver of space between my couch and my closet. I even included a mini portable lamp in the scheme for extra ambience. I was layering lighting like a pro.

At this point, I thought my apartment’s lighting scheme was complete. However, I quickly realized that I was missing one essential detail: a bedside light. 'The French interiors I'm drawn to never feel overly styled or precious; they feel collected. Made by a company called Gotopceed, they look just like wired-in recessed lighting, except here, there’s no renovation required. You simply stick an easy-to-remove magnetic strip to the ceiling, which holds an impossibly thin disk flush against the surface as if it were custom-installed. No drywall dust. No anxiously awaiting an electrician between the hours of 12 and 4 PM.

Obviously, you can’t flip them on with a switch the way you would traditional recessed lighting, so there’s a workaround. Two, actually: a remote control or simply walking into the room.

They turn on via motion sensor, which makes them ideal for those areas where you need illumination but cannot be bothered to fumble for a switch – say, the garage, when your hands are already full of shopping bags, handbags, coffee, keys, and your phone. No more doing your Lucille Ball act in the dark.

Living in an apartment, I think my most practical use case for these stick-on lights is actually the entryway, so every time I walk in, I’m greeted by a soft, ambient glow. London-based decorative artist, designer, and printmaker Ellen Merchant and lighting brand Pooky share a few key sensibilities – namely, a love of color, craftsmanship, and a perennial sense of play. Having spent many a summer as a Style Editor in the interiors space, I’ve noticed one shift without question: the fastest-moving category in outdoor aesthetics right now is portable lighting. The clearest example this season is Shea McGee’s wicker-look lamp from her new Target drop – a piece that, from price tag to taste, feels almost too good to be true.

As morning nears, the cortisol hormone is released to aid in easier waking. That's why having more natural light aids waking.

What the Sleep Experts Say

Dr. Andrew Gall is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Hope College and a Neuroscientist who studies the neural mechanisms and functions of sleep, including how light affects circadian rhythms.

'This is likely because your traditional alarm clock woke you up during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is a time when our brain activity mismatches that during wakefulness.'

One thing about me – I thoroughly think through every single purchase I make. It doesn't matter what it is – a cute dress, jewelry, decor for my apartment – you can bet on me to sit and think about something for days before actually buying it.

If your small bedroom nightstand isn't large enough for a full-sized table lamp, this is the most practical alternative. It's even short enough to fit on a bookcase shelf or on a countertop underneath kitchen cabinets. And though it be but small, its light output is ever-so mighty– providing three different levels of light to fit your needs.

This lamp also has excellent reviews on Walmart's site, with many commenting on its chic style, versatility, and ambient glow. 'I need like 5 more,' one reviewer wrote. And honestly? Same.

Bottom line: sometimes it's okay to impulse buy – especially when it's for Walmart's portable rattan lamp. With a design this chic and a price this cheap, it's unlikely that this lamp will stay in stock much longer. So go ahead, act on impulse. I won't judge.
