Martha shares a helpful trick to manage both volume and weight: 'One of the secrets that I used is to use either peanuts or recycle some bubble wrap and fill them halfway so it doesn't add any weight to the pot.' Fill almost three-quarters of the pot, tuck down the excess of the landscape cloth, and you are ready to start planting.'

Few blooms are as synonymous with springtime as the iconic daffodil – a staple that Martha Stewart herself can't resist. The original influencer could fill her Bedford estate with any flower of her choosing, but for this season, she opts for the classic (in wonderful abundance, naturally).

In April last year, Martha shared the 'swaths of brightly colored daffodils' blooming at her farm. She planted them in clusters of different varieties, shapes, sizes, and blooming times, 'providing a longer splash of color through the season,' as her photo demonstrates.

'When I moved to my farm, I knew I wanted to grow a continuous swath of daffodils. 'Over time, any that have faded have been replaced with other varieties, while others continue to flourish.'

She continues: 'My long daffodil border is broken up into various groupings – different varieties, different shapes and sizes, and different blooming times. This provides a longer splash of color through the season,' she says. 'We planted this section in 2019, and the flowers continue to bloom profusely every year.'

Similarly, Martha planted daffodils around her estate, including the garden beds outside her Tenant House, near her main greenhouse, and in colorful pockets in the surrounding woodland.

Rachel Bull, the Head of Gardens at Homes & Gardens, also stands by Martha's strategy. 'What she demonstrates here is less a planting scheme and more a masterclass in pacing,' she comments.

'Daffodils are so often treated as a singular moment, bright, beautiful, but gone too soon. However, by carefully selecting varieties with staggered flowering times, Martha transforms them into a season-long celebration. It is a subtle shift in approach, yet one that dramatically alters the rhythm of a spring garden. I'd begin with a lesser-known scented daffodil, like Narcissus 'Delnashaugh' or Narcissus 'Golden Dawn,' to make your yard as fragrant as it is colorful.'

'Brassicas are also suitable for such succession planting to prevent unwanted gluts (and a desperate search to find as many cabbage recipes as possible) and enjoy hearty vegetables from summer throughout fall and into winter.'

If space is at a premium and you want to stagger your supply of seasonal veg, Drew recommends this technique: 'Fast-growing vegetables like radish, lettuce, spinach, or green onions can also be sown in between larger, slower-growing vegetables to maximize your harvests from one space.' Taking pride of place in my dream home is a sprawling kitchen island. I'm not sure what it looks like just yet, but I know it simply must be enormous – since my current kitchen happens to be rather small.

However, since I can't yet fit a magnificent kitchen island in my city apartment, I've been hunting for alternatives. And recently, an archival picture of Martha Stewart's Turkey Hill kitchen has sealed the deal: my kitchen needs a portable butcher block.

When I moved into my first apartment, my grandmother kindly entrusted me with some of her prized silverware – along with some handy advice on how to polish it.

Years later, however, I'm a little fuzzy on the details, and I'm desperate to keep every piece in good condition. So, you can only imagine my relief when Martha Stewart shared a blog post revealing exactly how to clean silver.

Ahead of an intimate dinner party last week, Martha decided it was time to clean and polish some of her silver pieces – and fortunately for me, she took to her blog to document how her housekeeper, Enma, tackles the process.

Martha details a variety of methods, but her must-have product is Wright's Silver Cream, which you can find at Amazon (alongside a set of trusty cloths, like the Blitz Silver Care cloth from Macy's).

Martha Stewart's Guide to Cleaning Silverware

'If you're entertaining at home this winter, don't forget to take time to polish the silver,' begins Martha's blog post. 'Last week, my housekeeper Enma Sandoval took on the task of cleaning and polishing some of the silver in my Winter House Brown Room, a couple days ahead of a small dinner party I hosted.'

Martha begins by describing a non-toxic cleaning method which uses salt and baking soda.

'Fill an aluminum pan with hot water, salt and baking soda, stir until it is all dissolved, and then soak the silver pieces until a chemical reaction occurs that removes the tarnish,' she says. 'This technique is faster than hand cleaning, but may cause pitting and remove the more desirable tarnish called patina.'

To avoid removing this pretty patina on Martha's silverware, Enma hand-polishes each piece instead.

According to Martha, the most important tools are 'a good-quality, non-abrasive commercial silver polish', gloves to protect skin from the polish (like these disposable gloves from Amazon), and 'silver cleaning cloths made especially for removing tarnish from precious metals'.

'Always use silver polishes that are non-abrasive, and opt for formulas such as creams and gels instead of sprays,' she adds.

1. Wash Each Piece in Warm Water

To kickstart the process, Enma carefully washes each piece 'with dish soap and warm water to remove any dust,' says Martha. 'She then applies a small amount of silver cream and rubs both sides of the tray.'

To target smaller spots and hard-to-reach areas, Martha shares an ingenious tip: 'Use cotton swabs to apply the cream to tight crevices when cleaning', she says. 'It may take a little longer when cleaning a piece with more intricate designs or indentations. Enma is sure to wipe every area, getting into the tight spaces carefully.'

2. Coat the Pieces in Silver Cream

It might sound simple, but Martha emphasizes the importance of careful cleaning – and patience.

'Completely coat any pieces with the cream,' she writes. 'The silver will start to brighten as it is rubbed.'

According to Martha, hand-cleaning really is the best method.

'Never clean silver in the dishwasher,' she warns. 'The detergents’ aggressive chemicals, combined with the washer’s high cleaning temperature, will eventually turn it grey or white, with a dull, non-reflective surface.'

3. Rinse and Wash Again

Once you've polished your silverware sufficiently, another round of cleaning is in order.

'After rubbing the piece with silver cream, rinse the piece well,' advises Martha. 'Then wash it with dish soap and water again to ensure all the cream is removed. Enma uses the sponge to remove any of the leftover cream, and she rinses both the top and bottom of the tray thoroughly, so there is no trace of cream left.'

To prevent any damage to your silverware, Martha recommends using a terry cloth to line the bottom of your sink 'so the metal doesn’t bang against any surfaces'. In fact, this is 'also a good idea to use when washing special china'.

4. Don't Forget to Buff

And once the cleaning is complete? 'Enma dries the silver right away with a soft absorbent cloth to avoid any water marks,' Martha notes. 'Every piece is buffed to perfection. Do not let your silver air dry, because water left standing can cause spotting.'

Cleaning, polishing and buffing might sound like a hefty task, but a Martha-approved method never fails – and I know my grandmother would be proud.

'The joy of owning beautiful silver pieces does require some work to keep everything looking beautiful, but it is all well worth the effort,' concludes Martha.

How Often Does Martha Stewart Clean Her Silverware?

You might think that a busy host like Martha devotes constant attention to her silverware, but in reality, Martha takes a more relaxed approach.

'Polishing silver three or four times a year is generally sufficient to keep it in good condition,' she reveals. 'But if you’re entertaining and planning to use some pieces, give them a little extra attention before the event.'

Admittedly, polishing my silver pieces every few months still feels like a challenge to me – but Martha notes that regular upkeep actually saves time in the long run.

'I use Miracle-Gro potting mix [available at Walmart] specifically formulated for succulents. This mix contains sand and perlite to help prevent soil compaction and improve drainage.'

She says that choosing a pot with a drainage hole (like this one from Amazon) is key to the succulent's health. 'A clay shard is placed over the hole to help with drainage,' she says. 'I also like to use clay pots because they allow proper aeration and moisture to penetrate through the sides and to the plant.'

Placement of the potted plants is also critical for their growth. 'My porch is a lovely space for displaying potted plants,' Martha states.

'The floor-to-ceiling windows allow lots of light. Most succulents need at least half a day to a full day of sunlight. They’ll do beautifully in this space and will be a joy to watch grow and thrive.'

Since then, I've committed to a rather mammoth clearout – and after adopting Martha Stewart's system for reorganizing her cookware and baking pans, my kitchen has never felt so tidy.

'While marble counters are stunning, they do come with some disadvantages,' she writes. 'To start, marble is very porous making it prone to staining and etching. Marble is also softer than other countertop materials which causes it to be more susceptible to scratches.'

1. Wipe With Acetone

As you might expect, the process starts by clearing your counters and wiping them down – but you'll need to invest in some acetone. (Stocking up on cloths, like these cotton terry cleaning towels from Amazon, is also a wise idea, along with some rubber gloves like these nitrile disposable gloves from Walmart.)

'Enma clears the counters and starts by pouring a small amount of acetone onto a rag,' says Martha. 'Acetone is a colorless, flammable liquid used to dissolve various substances. Enma wipes the counter thoroughly with the acetone; my counters are wiped down many times a day, but there is still dirt left on the marble.'

2. Use Sandpaper to Remove Marks

After everything has been wiped down, sandpaper is the key to removing any etching or marks. (You can pick up plenty of sandpaper sheets from Amazon; fortunately, Martha notes that each sheet 'can be used several times before disposing'.)

'Enma pours water onto the counter and uses 400-grit sandpaper to remove the acid etching marks,' she explains. 'Doing it on a wet surface prevents any scratching. The sandpaper is waterproof, so it is very effective on this counter. It is an ultra-fine abrasive that removes the scratches easily and effectively.'

If you want to achieve a spotless result, Martha notes that this part of the process requires some persistence.

'Enma spends at least 10 minutes going over the table with the sandpaper,' she says. 'It doesn’t need too much pressure, but it does necessitate repetition to be sure the marks are removed.'

3. Deep Clean the Surfaces

Next, you'll need to swap out the sandpaper for Martha's recommended products, starting with the StoneTech Revitalizer, Cleaner and Protector.

'Enma wipes the counter again to remove the water, and then she sprays the Stonetech Revitalizer,' Martha says. 'Using another clean rag, Enma spreads the cleaner on the surface and wipes the entire area. She does this several times over to make sure the counter is completely covered and then she wipes it until clean and dry.'

Martha recommends the Stonetech spray since it 'cleans the surface and protects against future stains and bacterial growth'. While she notes that it's effective in removing dirt, she mentions that 'this step may need repeating until the rag ends up clean'.

4. Don't Forget Sealer

In typical Martha style, this blog post doesn't just provide an ingenious solution – it offers advice that you can return to time and again. After detailing her cleaning process, for instance, Martha explains how she keeps her counters protected for future use.

'After a thorough wiping, Enma pours a bit of the StoneTech BulletProof Sealer onto the marble, and she wipes it again carefully,' says Martha. 'This adds a very light layer to seal and protect the surface.'

5. Admire the End Result

The final product? 'No marks or rings at all,' declares Martha.

'My kitchen is the main "hub" of my home: it's where I eat meals, meet with staff, and do a lot of my paperwork – all on my marble kitchen counters,' reflects Martha. Martha Stewart does not stop gardening when the seasons change. As the New England air grows cool, the lifestyle icon retreats to the winter greenhouse on her Bedford estate.

On Instagram, Martha effuses about her February vegetable garden. She states on her blog page: 'It’s always so great to start off the new year growing healthy, delicious, organic greens. Now that it’s winter, attention is turned toward planting and maintaining my vegetable greenhouse, so I am never without fresh produce. I already have lots of wonderful vegetables thriving inside. Martha concludes: 'He fills each pot with Miracle-Gro [at Amazon] soil. He plants two per pot. As they develop, he will remove those that seem weak and unproductive. At 4 pm exactly, all the grow lights turn on as scheduled. I am so pleased with my vegetable greenhouse and how productive it is every year. I am looking forward to a season filled with bountiful harvests.'

Martha explains on her blog: 'Whenever it's cold outside, and my outdoor grounds crew is unable to work in the woods or gardens, I encourage them to take stock of the equipment, clean everything, and then organize all the tools and supplies.'

We use industrial hooks that can hold up to 50 pounds each. Then they are all returned to their designated hooks.'

Martha continues: 'Chemicals and oils are always kept in this storage cabinet, specifically designed for flammables. All the smaller tools, such as these large combination wrenches, are also organized and hung over the workbench. Lastly, the floors are blown, power-washed, and left bare to dry for several hours.'

'At the end of a day, it’s always very refreshing to see a clean and well-organized space,' concludes Martha. By following her simple advice, it's easy to achieve a similarly spotless utility space in any home.

'I love container plants, and over the years I have amassed quite a collection of potted specimens,' she states on her blog. 'To keep them looking their best, it is important to check their condition regularly, feed and water according to their needs, and repot those that have outgrown their current vessels. My head gardener, Ryan McCallister, has been repotting a group of Chinese money plants, Pilea peperomioides - low-maintenance perennials with interesting coin-shaped foliage.'

From there, she goes on to detail how exactly the repotting process should go, from signs that it's time to repot to the tools she uses.

'Look at all the roots surrounding the root ball,' she writes. 'When roots become tightly packed and confined within the container, it is called root-bound – a condition that hinders the plant’s ability to grow and expand.'

After checking for signs of disease or infestation, you can place a clay shard over the drainage hole of the pot to prevent soil fallout.

'For repotting, Ryan uses Miracle-Gro Tropical Potting Mix [available at Amazon],' Martha states. 'It is packed with nutrients that feed for up to six months and includes lava rock for added drainage that tropical plants and the Pilea peperomioides need. He wets it down first, so it is more supportive for the plants.'

She then suggests filling the pot to the rim, dipping the plant into some water so it is hydrated, and then placing the plant at the same height it was at previously in the pot.
