Hosting alfresco is hard – because of the weather, because of unwanted flying friends, because of the drink orders that have you schlepping indoors and out. So when Martha Stewart tells you the five things she’d never have a garden party without to make these occasions feel effortless, you listen.

I recently did just that. A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting her personal farm in Bedford, where she invited me to celebrate the launch of Hint, Martha's new AI-powered home management platform informed by her decades of homemaking expertise. The estate spans roughly 150 acres, complete with a summer house, winter house, and immaculate horse stables where Martha keeps her Friesians.

A summer lunch was held beneath the pavilion beside her pool, every bit as charming and flawlessly orchestrated as you’d imagine. We sat around an extra-long table crafted from a yew tree from her former East Hampton home, layered with seashell placemats and money trees. On the menu (I know you want to know) was a tomato tart with a crust so flaky it shattered, fennel and arugula salads, wild-caught salmon, a delicately dressed pasta (unspoiled by Martha's pet peeve: too much sauce), and panna cotta pooled in grapefruit granita, much of it sourced straight from the farm.

I left with one of the money trees – Martha reports she's had many over the years, a millionaire superstition I’m more than willing to test – but more than anything, I left itching to recreate some version of the afternoon myself.

1. Comfortable Seating

Even if what you’re hosting is, ostensibly, only a meal, Martha says it’s never only a meal. Think beyond the dining table and consider the broader experience. ‘Guests need somewhere to set down a drink, to be able to move comfortably throughout a space, and relax before and after a meal.’ Because guests will trickle in at different times, she always creates separate areas for dining and lounging.

‘If guests are comfortable, they’ll stay longer,’ she adds. ‘I like outdoor furniture that’s inviting enough to encourage conversation, like my outdoor furniture collection with Polywood.’

2. Good Lighting

Unlike indoor hosting, where lighting – even if it is the abomination that is the big light – is a given, Martha says she always plans her outdoor lightscape ahead of time. Not just so friends and family aren’t dining in the dark, but to gently guide their way should they need to get up for another drink, dessert, or the restroom.

‘Soft lighting creates atmosphere,’ she says, ‘but it should also safely illuminate paths and steps.’ Pathway lights may not be the sexiest purchase you’ll make all summer, but they’re one of the smartest. Elegant solar LED versions require no wiring, disappear neatly into the soil, and cost around $50 for a pack of eight. Save the portable lamps and lanterns for the tablescape, where they’ll do the heavy lifting aesthetically.

3. A Self-Serve Beverage Station

It isn't easy playing the part of an effortless host when you’re panting, running back and forth with drink orders. Martha’s solution? Make life easier with a self-serve beverage station.

Water, of course, is non-negotiable (at this particular lunch, it was infused with fresh fruit), but don’t stop there. Lemonade, iced tea, sangria – perhaps even a Sarti Spritz – anything of your favorites can be enjoyed on tap. And don't forget to stock some cocktail napkins and outdoor-friendly glassware nearby. ‘It keeps guests from constantly going in and out of the kitchen and lets everyone help themselves.'

The weather was, being late July on the East Coast: sweltering. But beneath the sun-free bliss of a pergola, Martha's outdoor dining space was actually quite pleasant as she knew how to keep an outdoor space cool. She told me that some form of shade is something she’d never dream of hosting alfresco without – after all, that menu you spent so much time curating and cooking won’t be fully appreciated if guests are wiping beads of sweat from their top lip between courses.

‘An umbrella or pergola makes outdoor spaces usable throughout the day and keeps everyone comfortable,’ Martha explains.

5. A Basket of Lightweight Throws

Even during ghastly heatwaves, once the sun sets, it can get chilly – and if you were expecting guests to arrive carrying a lightweight sweater after spending the day in 90-degree heat, get real. Underestimating the evening temperature drop is one of the outdoor entertaining mistakes Martha sees every summer, and it’s surprisingly easy to avoid.

‘I also see people forgetting how quickly temperatures can change in the evening,’ she observes. ‘A basket of lightweight throws is one of those small touches that makes guests feel cared for.’

My biggest takeaway from the afternoon was that, even if you’re Martha Stewart, effortless alfresco entertaining rarely happens by accident. ‘Don't wait until guests arrive to think about the practical details,’ Martha reminds me.

'Make sure the grill is clean, food is covered, and there's no standing water attracting insects. Good entertaining always begins with good preparation. When you've planned ahead, everything feels effortless.’

Even after spending the last 5 years in a major city across the world, the towering pines, the call of a loon, and mist upon a mountain are as welcome as my mother's voice every time I re-enter the state where I spent every summer after age 10. A minority of kitchen habits remain just as ingenious two decades after they first aired. However, not every tip comes from Martha Stewart.

A resurfaced archival video from Martha's Turkey Hill home in Westport, Connecticut, shows the original influencer making light work of her kitchen cleaning. Her secret? A rubber scraper, metal scraper, and warm towel power trio.

'As with all household chores, there are utensils that are available that make the job easier and are right for the job. If you have a messy counter after you've rolled out pastry or made bread dough, it's easy to clean up if you have one of these scrapers,' Martha says.

'This kind of metal scraper [like this one from Amazon] is excellent for cleaning butcher block countertops or bread boards. It just scrapes it clean.'

Martha then tackles marble or metal kitchen countertops, much like the stainless steel surfaces in her own home.

'If you have a metal or marble countertop, use one of these little rubber scrapers [similar to this one on Amazon]. Just push everything into a pile. This does not scratch. It doesn't mark. Just pull it all off into your hand, and throw it away,' she says.

Alongside using a scraper to easily clean up cooking debris, Martha recommends wiping down our counters with a classic towel, just like this chip option from Target. What we shouldn't use, she says, is a paper towel.

'Remember, we think about the environment and about ecology. I always use a damp towel like this – a damp dish towel to wipe up my counter. I keep it rinsed and warm at my side while I'm working in the kitchen,' Martha explains.

'These kitchen appliances last a lot longer and look a lot better if they are cleaned up after every use. So this dish towel and those scrapers make clean up very simple.'

'No matter what kind of closet you have, having the right hanger for the right piece of clothing is really important,' Kevin explains, showcasing an angled suit hanger, like these on Amazon.

'It’s angled to hold a suit or a shirt, but it's for a suit. This has a [rod] over it, and I put my jeans over that one, so I don’t really use it for suits,' he says.

'Then here we have another suit hanger that's angled, and it has this bar, which is really good. It's a locking bar, so when you put the pants in it, it locks in so they don't slip out,' Kevin explains.

Few blooms are as synonymous with springtime as the iconic daffodil – a staple that Martha Stewart herself can't resist. The original influencer could fill her Bedford estate with any flower of her choosing, but for this season, she opts for the classic (in wonderful abundance, naturally).

The archival image below, taken at her home in Westport, Connecticut, in August 1976, paints quite the bucolic scene of Martha harvesting her summer vegetables, homestead-style, no doubt planning to cook up something delicious with them in her kitchen later on.

But, before you start sowing, follow this advice: 'When planting a summer vegetable patch, I always recommend succession planting and growing smaller, quicker crops among the slower-growing vegetables,' explains Drew. 'The likes of radish, lettuce, beets, and carrots can be sown every few weeks for a longer harvest, which also helps prevent a glut of crops all ready at the same time.' If you are a novice, these are great options to start with, as they are some of the easiest vegetables to grow.

In the picture of Martha Stewart's 1970s patch, Drew identifies predominantly brassicas, including cabbage, broccoli, and kale, which are some of the easy vegetables to plant in March for summer harvests. 'Brassicas are also suitable for such succession planting to prevent unwanted gluts (and a desperate search to find as many cabbage recipes as possible) and enjoy hearty vegetables from summer throughout fall and into winter.'

If space is at a premium and you want to stagger your supply of seasonal veg, Drew recommends this technique: 'Fast-growing vegetables like radish, lettuce, spinach, or green onions can also be sown in between larger, slower-growing vegetables to maximize your harvests from one space.' And if you want to avoid them bolting – where plants put their energy into flowering, which can result in a bitter flavor, particularly for lettuce, radish, or chard – 'keep plants well-watered throughout the warm summers,' advises Drew. Dare we say, we've made it through the worst of winter? It would appear Martha Stewart thinks so. The lifestyle mogul recently sat down to share her tips for a thriving garden, and they've kick-started fantasies of flower-filled yards and long al-fresco evenings ahead.

'Every room needs cushions and throws; they add a wonderful layering quality. Layering cushions in different sizes with different patterns and textures looks less formal than cushions in all the same size, print, and fabric. Throws add further cosiness and can often break up expanses of block color.'

Taking pride of place in my dream home is a sprawling kitchen island. I'm not sure what it looks like just yet, but I know it simply must be enormous – since my current kitchen happens to be rather small.

However, since I can't yet fit a magnificent kitchen island in my city apartment, I've been hunting for alternatives. And recently, an archival picture of Martha Stewart's Turkey Hill kitchen has sealed the deal: my kitchen needs a portable butcher block.

Taken in 1975, the photo shows Martha making fresh pasta with her daughter, Alexis. However, rather than standing at her counter, Martha makes use of a handsome butcher block in the center of her kitchen.

I might not be able to replicate Martha's entire Turkey Hill kitchen, but I love the look of a butcher block. No matter the style of your space, this particular addition is guaranteed to introduce rustic charm and a dash of eclecticism.

'Home cooks love butcher blocks because they provide extra countertop space and assist with serving when you're entertaining. Butcher blocks are designed to be the heart of the kitchen.'

Since they're designed to epitomize practicality, butcher blocks are aldo impressively versatile.

'The butcher block bridges the gap between workspace and gathering place,' says Molly McGuire, Brand and Project Manager at Studio IQL. 'Its mobility and natural materials keep your kitchen feeling alive and adaptable.'

Determined to replicate Martha's look? You'll want to invest in a particularly heavy-duty butcher block – and consider the type of wood you prefer.

'Maple, walnut, and cherry are the most popular wood choices for butcher blocks today,' says Lisa. 'If you're looking for a butcher block to last a lifetime, get an extra-thick version like Martha’s. Opt for one that is at least 16 inches thick and make sure it has sturdy legs, since they can be very heavy.'

I might not be able to bring my entire mood board to life just yet, but I can't wait to set up a butcher block just like Martha's. Who says every kitchen needs an island, after all?

When I moved into my first apartment, my grandmother kindly entrusted me with some of her prized silverware – along with some handy advice on how to polish it.

Years later, however, I'm a little fuzzy on the details, and I'm desperate to keep every piece in good condition. So, you can only imagine my relief when Martha Stewart shared a blog post revealing exactly how to clean silver.

Ahead of an intimate dinner party last week, Martha decided it was time to clean and polish some of her silver pieces – and fortunately for me, she took to her blog to document how her housekeeper, Enma, tackles the process.

Martha details a variety of methods, but her must-have product is Wright's Silver Cream, which you can find at Amazon (alongside a set of trusty cloths, like the Blitz Silver Care cloth from Macy's).

Martha Stewart's Guide to Cleaning Silverware

'If you're entertaining at home this winter, don't forget to take time to polish the silver,' begins Martha's blog post. 'Last week, my housekeeper Enma Sandoval took on the task of cleaning and polishing some of the silver in my Winter House Brown Room, a couple days ahead of a small dinner party I hosted.'

Martha begins by describing a non-toxic cleaning method which uses salt and baking soda.

'Fill an aluminum pan with hot water, salt and baking soda, stir until it is all dissolved, and then soak the silver pieces until a chemical reaction occurs that removes the tarnish,' she says. 'This technique is faster than hand cleaning, but may cause pitting and remove the more desirable tarnish called patina.'

To avoid removing this pretty patina on Martha's silverware, Enma hand-polishes each piece instead.

According to Martha, the most important tools are 'a good-quality, non-abrasive commercial silver polish', gloves to protect skin from the polish (like these disposable gloves from Amazon), and 'silver cleaning cloths made especially for removing tarnish from precious metals'.

'Always use silver polishes that are non-abrasive, and opt for formulas such as creams and gels instead of sprays,' she adds.

1. Wash Each Piece in Warm Water

To kickstart the process, Enma carefully washes each piece 'with dish soap and warm water to remove any dust,' says Martha. 'She then applies a small amount of silver cream and rubs both sides of the tray.'

To target smaller spots and hard-to-reach areas, Martha shares an ingenious tip: 'Use cotton swabs to apply the cream to tight crevices when cleaning', she says. 'It may take a little longer when cleaning a piece with more intricate designs or indentations. Enma is sure to wipe every area, getting into the tight spaces carefully.'

2. Coat the Pieces in Silver Cream

It might sound simple, but Martha emphasizes the importance of careful cleaning – and patience.

'Completely coat any pieces with the cream,' she writes. 'The silver will start to brighten as it is rubbed.'

According to Martha, hand-cleaning really is the best method.

'Never clean silver in the dishwasher,' she warns. 'The detergents’ aggressive chemicals, combined with the washer’s high cleaning temperature, will eventually turn it grey or white, with a dull, non-reflective surface.'

3. Rinse and Wash Again

Once you've polished your silverware sufficiently, another round of cleaning is in order.

'After rubbing the piece with silver cream, rinse the piece well,' advises Martha. 'Then wash it with dish soap and water again to ensure all the cream is removed. Enma uses the sponge to remove any of the leftover cream, and she rinses both the top and bottom of the tray thoroughly, so there is no trace of cream left.'

To prevent any damage to your silverware, Martha recommends using a terry cloth to line the bottom of your sink 'so the metal doesn’t bang against any surfaces'. In fact, this is 'also a good idea to use when washing special china'.

4. Don't Forget to Buff

And once the cleaning is complete? 'Enma dries the silver right away with a soft absorbent cloth to avoid any water marks,' Martha notes. 'Every piece is buffed to perfection. Do not let your silver air dry, because water left standing can cause spotting.'

Cleaning, polishing and buffing might sound like a hefty task, but a Martha-approved method never fails – and I know my grandmother would be proud.

'The joy of owning beautiful silver pieces does require some work to keep everything looking beautiful, but it is all well worth the effort,' concludes Martha.

How Often Does Martha Stewart Clean Her Silverware?

You might think that a busy host like Martha devotes constant attention to her silverware, but in reality, Martha takes a more relaxed approach.

'Polishing silver three or four times a year is generally sufficient to keep it in good condition,' she reveals. 'But if you’re entertaining and planning to use some pieces, give them a little extra attention before the event.'

Admittedly, polishing my silver pieces every few months still feels like a challenge to me – but Martha notes that regular upkeep actually saves time in the long run.

'Because my silver is cleaned regularly, it doesn’t take too much time to get the job done,' she explains.

When repotting succulents, first, you need a good soil mix. 'The right soil mix will help to promote faster root growth and provide quick anchorage to young roots,' Martha explains. 'I use Miracle-Gro potting mix [available at Walmart] specifically formulated for succulents. This mix contains sand and perlite to help prevent soil compaction and improve drainage.'

She says that choosing a pot with a drainage hole (like this one from Amazon) is key to the succulent's health. 'A clay shard is placed over the hole to help with drainage,' she says. 'I also like to use clay pots because they allow proper aeration and moisture to penetrate through the sides and to the plant.'

Placement of the potted plants is also critical for their growth. 'My porch is a lovely space for displaying potted plants,' Martha states.

'The floor-to-ceiling windows allow lots of light. Most succulents need at least half a day to a full day of sunlight. They’ll do beautifully in this space and will be a joy to watch grow and thrive.'

Once you've repotted, you won't have to do it again for another two years: low maintenance, indeed.
