'Control your air and temperature, and you’ll get the best results,' says Danny Niemela, Vice President and CFO at Arizona-based luxury home remodeling firm ArDan Construction. 'I recommend installing a fan with a timer switch that automatically runs for 30 minutes after your shower.'

If foggy mirrors are your primary issue, it might be worth upgrading your setup using a heating pad or anti-fog technology.

'You can address the problem at the source by purchasing an anti-fog LED mirror,' suggests Danny. 'They use less than 40 watts of power, produce even heat across the surface, and can be found for as little as $150.' (This bestselling anti-fog vanity mirror is just $89.99 at Amazon, for example.)

Danny's simplest advice? 'Try a heating pad or mirror defogger, or run your fan for 15 minutes after you shower'.

How to Dry Out Your Home After Extreme Winter Snow Storms

With at least one foot of snow falling in over 20 states across the US, in recent days, over 85 million people are currently living under an extreme cold warning. According to the National Weather Service, these extreme cold temperatures could cause burst water pipes, risking havoc to homes and utilities, but leaks aren't the only type of damage your home is at risk from before and after adverse weather.

If your home feels damp or smells musty after the recent spate of severe winter storms, heavy rain, ice, and snow have likely found a way to seep into your home. To narrow your search, he suggests checking the following after snow and ice:

• Around the HVAC system

'When you’re looking around, assess for visible moisture like pooled water, condensation, damp materials like drywall, etc.,' Michael urges. 'Use a flashlight [from Amazon] and thoroughly go through each space, including behind furniture, to check for mold. A small issue can turn into a big problem down the road, so make sure to cover every square inch.'

When searching, you are looking specifically for any physical signs of damage, such as staining, warping, bubbling paint, cracks, or rust. Wet surfaces are also a key sign.

Michael adds, 'Don’t just rely on a visual assessment, either. If there are musty odors or the area seems humid, that can also point to problems, like mold, that need to be addressed. A great option is to assess the home with a hygrometer [available from Target] to check for high humidity.

'Finally, it’s a good idea to use an at-home mold test [also from Amazon] as a final check down the road to ensure there wasn’t a hidden issue that allowed for microbial growth somewhere in the home that requires calling a professional.'

Drying Out Your Home

Before drying out your home to prevent lasting damage after a storm, you have to fix the areas allowing moisture in in the first place, Michael warns. Without doing so, you will be fighting an uphill battle in the long term.

The reason is simple. Pour boiling water onto anything cold, and you risk thermal shock and breakages, and the same applies to your pipes, too.

Why You Should Never Pour Boiling Water Down Drains in Winter

If you haven't yet found an effective ways to stop pipes freezing, Devin Conley, founder and CEO at Mountain Standard Plumbing warns against turning to sudden heat. He says, 'Boiling water and winter pipes is a disaster in slow motion. What most homeowners don't realize is how brittle their pipes get in the winter.

'This is what I see all winter, every winter. That shot of 212-degree water down the drain hits pipes that may be only a degree or two above freezing, depending on insulation and exposure. With PVC, which has become the norm since about the 1980s, that's bad news.

'PVC starts to soften at 140 degrees. At 212, it can sag and develop hairline cracks at joints and bends. Plus, if the glue bond at joints is compromised, or the rubber gaskets soften, you may not notice until water starts leaking out from under the sink or through the wall.'

Devin reveals that in winter, this amounts to a double danger as cold pipes sag away from glue joints or gasket seals, and thermal shock from boiling water closes the gap with jagged edges.

'The net result,' Devin explains, 'is a drip that often goes unnoticed for weeks or months, soaking and rotting woodwork.'

So, not only will pouring boiling water down the drain leave you wondering what to do if a pipe bursts, but it can also secretly increase the risk of mold and mildew in hidden spots with a slow leak, and you won't know about it until it's too late.

Josh Mitchell, HVAC pro and founder of AirConditionerLab, agrees, warning that, though PVC pipes are most at risk, copper and cast iron are not immune, either.

'They last longer, but repeated boiling water over cold pipes in winter can create stress fractures or small leaks at the joints,' he advises. 'Many of these cracks only appear once the weather warms. A slow drip can turn into a full break a few weeks later. ABS and PVC are even more vulnerable, and the repairs can get expensive once cabinets, walls, or flooring need to be opened.

'The other issue in winter is grease. Boiling water moves the grease only a short distance before it hits a cold section of pipe and hardens again. If food waste is in the mix, the grease acts like glue, trapping it in place. The clog becomes tighter and harder to clear,' only adding to the reasons your sink won't drain, rather than clearing any blockages.

What to Do Instead

This winter, skip the chemicals and skip the kettle if you need to fix a clogged kitchen sink, says Devin.

Instead, he shares:

• 'FOG (fats, oils, and grease) is the enemy. Don't put it down the drain in the first place. Wipe pans with paper towels, compost scraps.' We recommend using the bestselling ENLOY Compost Bin available at Walmart for this, which features an odor-proof design

You may need to call in a pro for this. 'Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure cold water to clear grease and roots out of main house sewer lines,' continues Devin. 'It costs about as much as a snake but is much more effective and less likely to cause damage to pipes than the thermal shock of pouring boiling water down them.'

Additionally, says Josh, 'Use dish soap and hot tap water, not boiling water, right after cooking. Let it run for 30 to 60 seconds to help keep grease suspended.' For this, we recommend using Dawn Ultra Liquid Dish Soap, available at Walmart.

The reality of cozying up indoors over winter is that the condensation we produce through cooking, showering, drying laundry, and simply breathing in and out is inevitable.

This is the five-minute reset I do every morning, and it has helped prevent a host of problems, including the risk of mold and respiratory aggravation, for many years in my home.

My 5-Minute Morning Window Condensation Fix

The problem isn’t that there is a little bit of moisture on your windows; it’s if the moisture stays, and either eventually damages the surrounding materials, such as the plaster on your walls or the fabric of your window treatments, or it creates the perfect setup for mold spores to settle and grow their colonies.

Mold in the home, especially black mold, can lead to respiratory problems and health issues, as well as unsightly marks and unpleasant musky smells.

Wiping away the condensation every morning, and throwing open your windows for five minutes, also known as shock ventilation, will allow fresh air to circulate, and make sure any mold spores in the air do not have a cushty home to sink into and thrive.

Alongside using the extractor fan in the kitchen when cooking, and refreshing the indoor air with a blast of cold winter outdoor air afterwards for a couple of minutes, it all plays into keeping the overall humidity in my home from building up.

If you're not sure where your home stands on humidity, measure indoor moisture levels and surface temperatures on exterior-facing walls. • Ensure adequate daily ventilation.
• Don’t ventilate externally when it’s raining outside, as this can increase, rather than control the humidity in your home.

The reasons are simple. Microfiber is durable, reusable, and washes extremely well, making it a great way to be more sustainable at home when you are cleaning or maintaining your space. In all the years I have done this five-minute morning condensation reset, I’ve found no adverse effect from using the same cloth on my windows for two or even three days in a row, as long as it’s dried in between and spritzed with vinegar to prevent active mold spores or bacteria from making it smell.

Why You Shouldn't Shut Up Your Bathroom in Winter

While the risk is present year-round, mold is a particular problem in winter when homes are cold, and everyone keeps the windows shut to keep the home warm all day, turning any and all bathroom ideas into sealed boxes.

You shower in hot water, moisture hits the cold surfaces, and it sticks around for hours with nowhere to go. This trapped moisture feeds mold on grout lines, ceilings, paint, and the caulking around showers. • Ditch the fabric conditioner for towels: ‘Fabric softeners can coat the fibres of your towels, making them less absorbent,’ she says. ‘Instead, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle once a month, it helps lift residue and keeps towels fluffy.’ This also applies when washing microfiber cloths, which are a more planet-friendly cleaning item, as they can be washed and reused hundreds of times. 'Bubbling paint, drips, ceiling water stains, dripping pipes, and leaky toilets are a few examples of maintenance issues that should be a red flag if you are concerned about mold growth,' he adds.

5. Condensation

Stopping condensation on windows is not your only concern in winter. Condensation can also form in attics, especially those not insulated or ventilated correctly, quickly leading to attic mold growth.

Russell warns, 'This indicator may not seem like a huge deal when you first identify it; however, they are a sign that you have a more universal, atmospheric problem going on, and if not rectified, could lead to a more serious problem.'

'If there is actively growing mold, the surface must be removed or, in some cases, encapsulated,' he explains. 'This is where you should contact a mold professional to test and investigate your home to find mold growth that may often be hidden. A good professional will then write up a remediation plan for a remediation contractor to follow to remove and clean, and encapsulate molds to ensure no further spread or growth.'

He continues. 'If you place salt on a windowsill, it will soak up some of the condensation that would otherwise collect on the cold glass. That’s how salt prevents condensation in theory.'

Why Vinegar Doesn't Work for Removing Black Mold in Your Shower

It doesn't take long for mold to stain and ruin shower caulk, no matter how well or often you clean a shower. Once it has cropped up, it can spread like wildfire, permanently ruining the aesthetics of the sealant finishes of your bathroom ideas.

Although cleaning with vinegar is a simple way to kill spores without harsh chemicals, it isn't the most effective method in an area so humid and damp. Trust us, we tried it. I applied a vinegar-soaked cotton pad on the old staining in my shower overnight and saw no changes, and head of Solved Punteha van Terheyden had similar results on fresh mold.

'I was really hopeful when I tried this overnight on new black mold that had popped up out of nowhere on the sealant in my shower,' Punteha shares. 'I was particularly keen to switch from harsh chemicals to a natural method because my tiny en suite feels suffocating with strong smells.

'I poured white cleaning vinegar on the four spots that had the mold, and placed oval cotton pads over it to keep the vinegar in place. I left it overnight and in the morning, removed the pads to find absolutely nothing had changed. The black mold was still there.

'I think the problem is that the vinegar dries quickly and cannot do its natural magic. Whilst submerging your showerhead into a bag of vinegar overnight will see the mineral deposits eaten away brilliantly, this vinegar method for black mold is not in the same league. I'm reverting to my trusty commercial Active sealant cleaner from Amazon, and will leave my window open when it's doing its work instead.'

What to do Instead

It turns out that simply cleaning a bathroom is not enough to dislodge these unsightly stains. Michael Rubino, a mold and air quality expert, environmental wellness advocate, and founder of HomeCleanse, explains that successful remediation involves a thorough approach of addressing the source, removing growth, and eliminating contaminated surfaces.

'Proper remediation means all contamination must be removed, including the colony, roots, dead mold particles, mycotoxins, and any bacteria,' he explains. 'If this is not done, the microbial growth may persist, and the area will still be contaminated with harmful microscopic particles.'

This is because caulk becomes semi-porous over time, allowing mold to sink deep beneath the surface. As a result, it can return quickly, even if you do manage to remove the surface discoloration.

The best solution is to replace the caulk completely. 'For sealants like caulk and grout, the best way to handle the situation is to remove silicone caulk, clean the area, and then caulk the shower again.'

While this is an essential DIY skill every homeowner should know, if you do not feel confident, the area is very large, or the issue is particularly bad, it might be time to call the pros to replace the caulk for you.

From there, the trick is to prevent colonies in the first place. The best way to do this is to reduce humidity and moisture in the shower between uses, improve ventilation, and wipe away moisture using a squeegee to stop limescale and mold.

Otherwise, Michael suggests cleaning with hydrogen peroxide to tackle it as soon as it crops up. He suggests, 'If the issue seems minor, you can try cleaning and then monitor it carefully. Start by spraying the affected area with hydrogen peroxide [from Walmart] and letting it sit for about 10 minutes.

'Once it’s had time to break down the problem, wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth [also from Walmart] and then repeat this step three times. Wiping is essential because it helps remove microscopic particles that can otherwise linger and continue to impact your indoor environment.'

Josh clarifies that allowing your home's temperature to drop too low, whether overnight or during the day, creates cool spots where moisture can condense. Maintaining a steady temperature prevents these cool spots from forming.

'This approach is particularly useful in colder climates, or in homes with older windows and insulation, where surfaces are more prone to cooling down quickly,' he adds.

However, if your home is poorly insulated or has an old heating system, running the heating constantly may not be the best solution. In such cases, the system could overwork and struggle to maintain the desired temperature. It's also essential to ensure your thermostat is placed correctly for accurate readings.

Having it too close to the front door or windows may register a lower temperature reading than further away, tripping the system to turn on when it's not needed. This is a heating mistake and will push your bills up unnecessarily, as well as make your house heat unevenly.

The caveat to the above temperature range is when you're considering the ideal temperature to set your thermostat to when on winter vacation. This should be lowered slightly, to approximately 59-60˚F.

This will ensure your home retains necessary warmth while making it quicker and easier to bring it back up to temperature when you return home.

‘But remember, they only run when your HVAC does – so if you don’t use heating or AC often, a plug-in purifier may be more effective day-to-day,’ he adds. So, to avoid this, cleaning expert Kazmierzewski recommends using cleaning products specifically designed for your carpet, and reading the manufacturer's instructions carefully, especially if you are using a new cleaning solution.

'If you want to use a natural cleaning solution, you can try cleaning with vinegar (such as the White Distilled Vinegar available at Target) and water in a 1:1 solution. First apply it in a small, hidden area to make sure it doesn't cause discoloration.'

4. Not vacuuming regularly

Unsure how often you should vacuum carpet? According to professional cleaner Kazmierzewski, vacuuming carpet once a week is a good rule of thumb, but, if the carpet is used in a high-traffic area, or you have pets, more often may be necessary.

Nitya Seth, interior designer at NITYANAMYA advises, 'Few people pay attention to vacuuming before other intensive cleaning processes. Excluding this step will allow carpets to harbor a combination of water and dirt, which will reduce the efficiency of washing.'

Opening windows in winter to prevent mold is nothing new. What is interesting about the Stoluften technique is the way they open windows.

The term translates to ‘shock ventilation’, and entails opening every window in your home at the same time for five minutes, twice a day as a cheap way to stop mold.

KJ Raja, mold remediation expert and owner of Texas Water Doctor explains, ‘When we lift the windows for a short time, the excessive indoor moisture from cooking, showering and even breathing can be expelled. This eliminates the factors required by mold to grow (high humidity).

'Shock ventilation enables quick and proper air exchange (an essential in winter) that quickly lowers humidity, using external air rather than something like a dehumidifier. The small time frame results in less heat loss, thus ensuring indoor temperatures are more stable while improving ventilation.’

Michael Bogoyavlenskiy, cleaning expert and CEO of Cleaning Express adds, ‘The concept of Stossluften is something I’ve practiced in my own home for many years and I believe it makes a massive difference to air quality and mold growth. Although it shouldn’t be the only thing you do to prevent mold, it can make a big difference to humidity and potential damp inside your home.’

The real key to the method is simultaneously eliminating other bad habits that increase the risk of mold in your home, KJ continues, such as forgetting to run extractors when cooking or showering and neglecting water leaks.

You should also avoid using this method if it is raining, he adds, ‘There’s little point in doing Stossluften if it’s raining outside. It’s most effective when the relative humidity outside is fairly low, as rain, fog, or mist are just going to invite more moisture into your home. A cold, dry day in winter is best for home ventilation.’

The downsides to the Stoluften technique

Besides making it a little harder to keep a home warm all day, there are a few caveats to consider when using the Stoluften, however, as KJ Raja explains:

• Environmental Factors: This technique can be difficult to engage with in areas with high outdoor humidity as the idea is to reduce the dampness indoors but the air may be serving the opposite purpose.
• Existing Mold: Shock ventilation will not assist with getting rid of black mold in your home. For this, you’ll need to consider dedicated mold remediation [such as killing mold with vinegar] or getting professional assistance.
• Timing: It is essential to be regular. If the residents cannot manage to do the technique every day, the results are not as effective.

Micahel Bogoyavlenskiy also adds, ‘If you run a well-serviced HVAC system, you won’t need to do this to combat mold. Provided your HVAC system works properly, it will circulate air and bring in new air from outside. If this is the case, opening your windows to ventilate won’t add loads of value.’

How to know when it's time to call the pros

1. Serious mold issues

If you identify any of the common types of household mold in your home, and your attempts to clean mold off walls or get rid of black mold fail, it's crucial to call in the pros.

This is especially relevant where the surface area of the mold is large.

Karina Toner, cleaning expert and operations manager at Spekless warns, 'Mold can spread quickly and pose serious health risks, such as respiratory issues or allergic reactions. DIY treatments often miss spores hidden in walls or under surfaces, allowing the mold to regrow. Professionals can assess the extent of the problem and safely remove all traces using specialized equipment.'

Really, as Toner advises, you should call the pros at the very first sign of mold, which may be discoloration or wondering why your house smells musty, and particularly if the mold covers an area larger than 10 square feet, or, importantly, recurs after cleaning.

Additionally, a lesser-known cause of serious mold issues is vinyl flooring, says Evie Graham, professional cleaner and founder of Waste Direct, even if you know how to clean vinyl floors properly.

She explains, 'Most cleaning guides won't tell you this but luxury vinyl flooring has become a silent harbinger of serious mold issues. Through my professional experience, I've discovered that the waterproof nature of luxury vinyl actually masks underlying moisture problems.

'When clients attempt DIY cleaning of what appears to be surface mold, they often miss the extensive colonization happening beneath. Call professionals immediately if you spot even minimal discoloration on vinyl flooring – this isn't a surface issue you can tackle with household cleaners.'

2. Electrical failures

While it's possible to fix loose outlets or change a lightbulb above the stairs, when it comes to electrical failures, always leave it to the experts to avoid risk of electrocution or fire.

Al Fagundes, founder of A. Fagundes Plumbing & Heating Inc. says, 'Messing with electrical components without proper training can cause shocks, fires, or permanent system damage. These are issues to address immediately, as delays can escalate the risk and repair costs.'

For example, if you encounter any common thermostat problems, your HVAC system isn't powering on, or you notice flickering lights when the unit runs, 'it's time to step back,' advises Fagundes.

3. Refrigerant leaks

While refrigerant leaks may be one of the reasons your AC unit freezes up, fixing it should always be left to professionals.

Josh Mitchell, HVAC technician and founder of AirConditionerLab, says, 'Dealing with refrigerants isn't just about skill – it's about legality. Due to their potential environmental impact, handling refrigerants requires certification under EPA regulations. Refrigerant leaks can also be a sign of bigger problems with the system.'

Therefore, it's imperative to call an expert immediately upon suspicion or detection of a leak, whether your air conditioner is leaking water or your AC vents are dripping water.

'Delaying could lead to higher operational costs and system failure,' adds Mitchell.

4. Severe pest infestations

One of the unfortunate constants in life is having to deal with pests, and while a few ants or flies may be manageable, getting rid of termites, bed bugs or dealing with common winter pest infestations may be a different story.

As professional cleaner Toner says, 'Pests can cause structural damage, spread disease, and are difficult to eliminate without proper training and tools.'

So, either call the pros immediately after identifying any indoor pests, or seeing signs of one including droppings, teeth marks, nests. If you have tried some DIY methods, such as using baking soda to kill ants or getting rid of moths with vinegar and the pests have come back, or you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, it's time to call in the pros.

It's important to note that 'waiting too long can lead to significant damage or increased costs,' warns Toner.

5. Grease clogs

While it is possible to fix a clogged kitchen sink, if grease is one of the reasons why your sink won't drain, it's best to call in a professional plumber.

Cleaning expert Graham says, 'Crytallized grease blockages in modern drainage systems are virtually impossible to clear without professional intervention. Much like electrical failures, a faulty furnace or boiler that leaves you wondering why your house is so cold even with heating should be fixed by an expert.

As Robert Hamerly, principal at GreenSavers, says, 'If your furnace or boiler seems faulty, you'll want to get a professional to handle it as quickly as possible. These types of machines function via pressurization and combustion, which should be daunting enough to give any DIY-er pause.

'Call someone in to fix up your system, or better yet, consider replacing a faulty furnace or boiler with a fully electric heat pump or heat pump water heater to increase efficiency and sustainability overall.'

If you're wondering how long a furnace lasts, the average lifespan is between ten and twenty years, but this will depend on usage, model, and the size of the home it is used to heat.

'And yes, you will definitely want to call a professional to do that installation process,' adds Hamerly.

7. Any issue that simple HVAC maintenance won't fix

Aside from refrigerant leaks, Max Veggeberg, CEO and founder of Tetra, says, 'Homeowners should start with simple maintenance like replacing air filters, and ensuring vents are unblocked. Address drafts by sealing windows and doors (with caulk, such as the GE Advanced Silicone Caulk for Kitchen & Bathroom available at Amazon) and adding insulation in key areas.

'If these steps don't solve issues like temperature changes, cold spots, or inefficiencies – or if you notice strange odors, unusual noises, or need help with duct work, refrigerant, or electrical repairs – it's time to call a professional.'

This is because all of these issues require specialized training and tools, and therefore should be left to licensed, trained professionals. 'Improper repairs can lead to safety risks, such as electrical hazards or compromised air quality, and can also reduce system, efficiency, increase bills, or cause further damage.'

You should also endeavor to have your HVAC system serviced at least once annually, and ideally twice.

8. Extensive water damage

Water damage is one of the most devastating home disasters, which is why it's important to get it dealt with quickly, efficiently, and, most importantly – professionally, whether you need to get water out of a carpet after a flood, or fix a ceiling with water damage.

Professional cleaner Toner says, 'Water damage can lead to structural issues and mold growth if not addressed correctly. Professionals use moisture meters and industrial-grade dryers to thoroughly mitigate damage.'

So, as soon as you notice any signs of water damage, such as soaked carpets, sagging ceilings, or warped walls, call in the pros. In the meantime, it will be useful to know how to dry waterlogged items to minimize damage to your belongings.

9. Carbon monoxide issues

Finally, unlike smells that could be a sign of danger in your home, carbon monoxide is odorless and virtually undetectable – which is why it's so important to install carbon monoxide alarms and call an expert if you suspect any issue at all around your home that may be causing a carbon monoxide leak.

Simon Bernath, CEO and founder of FurnacePrices.ca says, 'If there is anything that suggests an issue, like a cracked heat exchanger or any other issue which could be causing a carbon monoxide leak for instance, that is something that should be dealt with by a professional immediately.

'So, make sure you have working detectors installed, and test them at the start of the heating season to make sure they're working. And don't ignore it if it's going off but the furnace or heating system otherwise seems to be working OK.'

1. Remove lights and decorations

Before you can efficiently clean a Christmas tree, you need to remove the decorations. This includes your baubles and lights. If you have a pre-lit Christmas tree, you should unplug the lights before beginning.

Follow the most efficient way to take down Christmas decor and clean the branches before putting your tree away for next year.

2. Avoid using liquids

When cleaning an artificial Christmas tree, your goal is to remove dust properly, rather than deep clean. Because of this, Mac Harman, CEO of Balsam Hill suggests, ‘Avoid using any kind of liquid on your artificial tree – water, soap, vinegar, or other cleaning agents may affect the quality of your tree and void its warranty.

‘Instead, use a dense fiber duster or clean, dry cloth. When cleaning a frosted Christmas tree, I suggest taking extra care with your dusting as anything too vigorous could cause shedding of the snowy flocking.’

Packing away your tree with damp branches can also lead to an unwanted type of household mold.

Lisa Sharp, cleaning expert and founder of Lisa Sharp Creative agrees, ‘It's always a good idea to check the manual that came with your Christmas tree as they often use different materials. However, in general, the best way to clean your Christmas tree is to simply use a soft duster to get any dust and debris off of your tree.’

3. Use a blow dryer on cool to remove debris from crevices

A smart cleaning tip to remove dust from difficult sections of your Christmas tree, such as the crevices where the branches meet the trunk or the interlocking trunk sections, is to use a blow dryer on its coldest, gentlest setting. Hold the blow dryer around 10 inches away from the tree and turn it on to dislodge small debris.

Avoid using high heat, as this risks melting or damaging the artificial needles, and keep the appliance moving to avoid any burning. Start from the top and work your way down to blow away any debris that drops down onto lower branches.

4. Use hydrogen peroxide on yellowed-white trees

While you should avoid using liquids when cleaning artificial Christmas trees, a small exception can be made when cleaning white trees. It is important to distinguish that these are not flocked Christmas trees, covered in artificial snow, but trees with dyed white needles.

These trees, when stored incorrectly or used for many years, can start to yellow. To undo this yellowing, you can clean with vinegar, or clean with hydrogen peroxide. Mix three parts hydrogen peroxide, from Walmart, or vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle and lightly spritz only the affected parts of the tree. Then leave it outside in direct sunlight for two to three hours. This should help to bleach the stain white again without the need for harsh chemicals.

Ensure the tree is completely dry before storing a Christmas tree to avoid mold or musty smells.

5. Maintain over the festive period

We usually think of caring for a Christmas tree only in relation to real trees – but your artificial tree will need some upkeep during the festive period too.

Mac Harman, CEO of Balsam Hill, says, ‘Providing your tree was clean when it was put away and has been stored in a box or bag in a cool dry location, your tree should be good to go when you get it out. I recommend a light, gentle dusting every so often when your tree is on display over the festive season to help prevent the build-up of any dust or dirt.’

Lisa Sharp, cleaning expert, adds, ‘Depending on how your tree is stored, cleaning it both when getting it out and before putting it away is best practice to make sure to keep it dust-free.’

6. Store it to protect it from dust

Mac Harman, CEO of Balsam Hill concludes, ‘Before putting your tree away you should ensure your tree is free from any debris. A storage bag will protect your tree while it’s stored. Your bag needs to be large enough to comfortably hold your tree and made from durable material so that it can’t be torn by protruding branches – rip-stop nylon is a great option for this.

While there are many cleaning methods to avoid damaging a TV and other electronics, a microfiber cloth is a handy, trusty way to get the job done, says Carolina Kazimierski, co-owner and president of Sophia's Cleaning Service.

She explains, 'Another common way I see microfiber being used is for cleaning electronic screens, and other delicate surfaces like glasses or sunglasses, especially those with any type of coating.

'Since it does have these very fine, soft, lint-free fibers, microfiber is safer and runs much less of a risk of scratching a delicate coating or your device screens.'

To clean dust from a PC without compressed air, to clean a monitor or to clean a laptop screen, use your microfiber cloth dry for dusting screens, or 'lightly dampened for stubborn smudges,' recommends cleaning expert Webber.Use either with a dab of distilled water, such as the Pure Life Distilled Water available at Target, or a homemade cleaning spray to repel dust.

'Don't spray water directly on your gadgets unless you enjoy living dangerously,' he adds.

3. For polishing stainless steel

If you're looking for cleaning methods for stainless steel, Webber suggests using microfiber cloths.

He says, 'Microfiber cloths are perfect for stainless steel because they buff away fingerprints without scratching or streaking,' particularly when paired with a specifically formulated cleaner, such as the Therapy Stainless Steel Cleaner available at Amazon. 'Follow up with a dry cloth for that showroom shine,' he adds.

You can also, surprisingly, polish stainless steel appliances with olive oil or use essential oil, which is brilliant for cleaning stainless steel, if you prefer a more natural approach.

4. To revive old shoes

Shoes can be difficult to clean, particularly if you can't wash shoes in the washing machine. Enter: the microfiber cloth, says cleaning expert Webber.

He explains, 'Microfiber cloths gently clean leather and vinyl shoes without harsh chemicals,' and are also suitable to clean suede shoes. 'Buff your shoes with a dry cloth, or dampen them slightly for tougher scuffs,' or if you need to get mold off shoes.

5. To simplify bathroom cleaning

Whether you need to clean a bathroom, or even clean a bathroom in 30 minutes or less, a microfiber cloth is ideal for getting the job done.

Cleaning expert Webber says, 'Microfiber tackles soap scum and grime without needing harsh cleaners. Dampen the cloth and wipe down sinks, faucets, and shower doors. Now you can say, “I cleaned the bathroom in minutes!” and mean it.'

Dehumidifiers are appliances that pose an electrical risk. In many instances, our pros warn, it is safer to place it on your landing, or use others method of reducing humidity in your bathroom.

We asked some of the top experts in the industry for their opinions on the wisdom of placing even the best dehumidifier in a bathroom, so you make the best choice for your space.

Should you put a dehumidifier in the bathroom?

In short, no. Err on the side of caution and avoid using a dehumidifier the bathroom as it's an electrical item, posing a safety risk in a wet room.

'Using a dehumidifier in the bathroom may seem like a practical way to tackle excess moisture, but there are significant safety and practical considerations that make this approach less than ideal,' warns Chris Michael, MD of leading dehumidifier manufacturer Meaco.

'Bathrooms are considered wet zones, and placing electrical appliances, including dehumidifiers, in such spaces can pose serious safety risks,' Michael continues. 'For example, in countries like the UK, it is against safety regulations to use electrical devices in bathrooms due to the risk of electrical shock. Furthermore, domestic dehumidifiers are not IP-rated (ingress protection rated) to operate safely in wet environments.'

That said, there are ways of using dehumidifiers within this space that can make a positive impact.

'Using a dehumidifier in the bathroom can be a great idea, but it depends on how you use it and what your bathroom set-up is like,' explains Myles Robinson, home expert and founder of UK Composite Doors.

Here, we take a closer look at whether or not it is a good idea to use a dehumidifier in this room of the house and, if you do, how to get the very most out of it in a risk-free way.

When is it a bad idea to use a dehumidifier in the bathroom?

If using a dehumidifier in your bathroom is something you have been considering, you might me making one of the most common dehumidifier mistakes: placing it in a wet room.

As explained earlier, the electrical shock risk is not insignficant and therefore it might be safer to chose another method of humidity control for your bathroom.

'Dehumidifiers aren’t always the most convenient option for bathrooms,' says Myles Robinson. 'First, there’s the matter of electricity and safety. Bathrooms are wet spaces, and you need to make sure the dehumidifier is plugged into a GFCI outlet and placed where it won’t get splashed. Plus, having to empty the water tank frequently can get old fast if you’re using it daily.

'Bathrooms naturally deal with a lot of moisture, from steamy showers to wet floors, and that humidity can lead to bigger issues like mold, mildew and even peeling paint if you’re not careful,' continues Myles. 'A dehumidifier is a solid tool for managing that, but it’s not always the most practical or only solution.'

How can using a dehumidifier in the bathroom help?

Not all the experts we spoke to were against using a dehumidifier in the bathroom – in fact, some recommended it as a way to reduce your home's humidity.

'A dehumidifier in your bathroom might make sense if it's particularly prone to dampness, like a basement bathroom that has a shower,' says Simon Bernath, founder and CEO at FurnacePrices.ca. 'The dehumidifier won't be able to totally overcome the humidity generated during a shower so a good ventilator fan is still important, but it can help control residual humidity the rest of the time.'

'In general, dehumidifiers can help reduce the excess moisture in a bathroom, which will prevent the growth of mold and the development of musty odours which are caused by these spaces’ high humidity levels,' explains David Miloshev, electrician and home improvement specialist at Fantastic Services. 'However, before you use a dehumidifier in the bathroom, especially while you’re taking a shower, there will be some important considerations to keep in mind to guarantee your safety and the appliance’s optimal performance.'

Where to place a dehumidifier for steamy bathrooms

If you decide you'd like to go ahead and try using a dehumidifier in the bathroom, there are a few tips to ensure not only your safety, but also how effective this method of moisture control will be.

'The key to getting the most out of a dehumidifier in the bathroom is placement and timing,' explains Myles Robinson. 'If you’re using a portable unit, make sure it’s positioned in a spot where it can really pull in the moist air, such as near the shower or the sink area. Keep it running for 20–30 minutes after you’ve finished bathing to tackle that post-shower humidity.

'I’ve had clients who swear by small, compact dehumidifiers that they can move around as needed,' continues Myles. 'Just remember, bathrooms can be tight spaces, so make sure the unit you choose isn’t blocking walkways or getting in the way of things like opening drawers or cabinets.'

There is still the matter of safety to be considered, of course. Chris Michael has a brilliant piece of advice on the best place to put a dehumidifier for getting the most out of it when battling bathroom moisture, without any safety risks.

'Instead of placing a dehumidifier in the bathroom, positioning it in the hallway just outside is an ideal solution,' says Chris. 'A dehumidifier in this location effectively draws the damp air out of the bathroom. Located here it can also serve nearby bedrooms, removing condensation that occurs overnight during the colder months. Some people find dehumidifiers too loud in bedrooms, so the landing is the ideal place to position a dehumidifier in the home.'

What are the best ways of managing bathroom humidity?

If you decide a dehumidifier is not such a great idea for your bathroom or landing, there are alternatives.

'In many cases, there are better ways to improve bathroom ventilation to consider,' advises Myles Robinson. 'Exhaust fans are the unsung heroes of bathroom humidity control. They pull moisture straight out of the air and vent it outside, which is often more effective than just cycling it through a dehumidifier. I’ve seen homeowners with outdated or under-powered exhaust fans struggle with constant condensation issues, and upgrading to a higher-capacity fan made all the difference.'

'There are alternatives to using a dehumidifier and these could be better options if your bathroom lacks space,' points out James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder. 'For example, an extract fan is a good alternative and ventilates the excess humidity from your bathroom to the outside using an electrical motor. However, installing this type of fan may involve structural work which could be costly. You can also help with humidity by placing containers of baking soda around the room. However, this may take longer than a dehumidifier or ventilation fan.'

Punteha van Terheyden, head of Solved adds, 'I have two bathrooms that are small, steamy and the fan takes ages to clear the steam after showering and bathing. But we've never had mold or mildew in these spaces because we always open the window after bathing, and leave it open till the steam clears.'

Punteha and her household do this year round, and find it takes between 15-30 minutes to clear the humidity. 'Afterwards, we close the windows to make sure the heating doesn't go to waste in the winter and cooler months.

How to grow chicory from seed

Chicory wants to grow in a sunny spot in a well-draining soil type with a pH of 6-7.5. It is a crop best suited to cooler climates as it thrives growing between 50-75ºF. When temperatures rise above 75ºF the growth slows, while the crop’s flavor changes and plants start to bolt and go to seed.

Chicory seeds for forcing should be sown outdoors in the early to mid-spring, while non-forcing varieties can be sown from mid-spring to early summer. Sow seeds outdoors a half-inch deep in rows 12 inches apart and thin plants to at least eight inches apart as they develop.

Growers in colder climates can start vegetable seeds indoors to get ahead. Sow seeds indoors into large module trays filled with good seed-starting compost and keep them at a temperature of 65-70ºF in a heated propagator or on a warm windowsill for good germination. Transplant seedlings out into the garden once the risk of frost has passed.

A second sowing is also possible for later harvests. Either sow a fast-maturing type in summer for a late fall harvest outdoors or sow seeds in mid-to-late summer to transplant seedlings undercover - as you can grow the crop in a greenhouse in the fall. It is recommended that summer sowings are done indoors, as germination can be erratic outdoors during the hotter months.

How to grow chicory - care tips

Keep chicory well-watered throughout the growing season. It is vital to water young plants regularly and keep the soil moist during summer, as a lack of moisture can affect the flavor and cause chicory to bolt. When you water plants, water the soil rather than watering the chicory from above as wet foliage can cause fungal diseases.

Mulching around plants with a two-inch thick layer of compost, leaf mold, or straw can help retain moisture in the soil and suppress competition from weeds for water and nutrients. Take time to get rid of weeds from around the chicory plants, it is an important care task as the crop does not like competition. Carefully running around rows with a garden hoe is an ideal way to remove any young weed seedlings.

Chicory does not require lots of fertilizing. Adding organic matter, including compost or well-rotted manure, to the planting site before sowing will enrich the soil. Around a month after transplanting, or once the seedlings are large enough to thin, feed plants with a quarter-cup of high-nitrogen fertilizer, such as this natural organic 12-0-0 blood meal from Burpee.

Chicory is susceptible to damage from slugs and snails, that will nibble holes in the leaves. Placing rough surfaces, such as crumbled eggshells or grit, around plants or using beer traps are two good slug control methods to stop them from troubling plants. Encouraging lots of beneficial wildlife is also a good way to get rid of slugs as many garden visitors will eat the pests.

How to harvest chicory

Non-forcing types of chicory are harvested once the hearts form and the head reaches full size. Alternatively, the plants can be harvested as baby cut-and-come-again leaves for summer salads - but most growers let the heads develop to maturity and harvest from late summer onwards.

Lift the head once it reaches the desired size and is firm, which can be 10-12 weeks from the seeds germinating depending on the particular variety. Waiting too long to crop is a harvesting mistake as the chicory can get tough and bitter. Use a sharp knife to cut the head just above ground level. Leave the stump in the ground and it may develop a second, smaller head to harvest later.

The process of harvesting forcing types of chicory is a bit more complicated. Ashleigh Smith, managing editor of True Leaf Market, recommends harvesting the roots by digging the plant from September to December before preparing them for forcing for chicons - the name for the forced new growth.

‘The root should be swathed and allowed to dry. After drying, remove the tops,’ says Ashleigh. ‘Store until you can use the roots as a coffee substitute or force them to produce chicons.’

The dried roots can be planted in pots filled with compost and covered with a bucket. Keep the pot in complete darkness and somewhere cool at 50–60°F. Ashleigh Smith says it should take ‘20-30 days’ to produce chicons around six inches tall. She adds: ‘The leaves can be harvested as you would cos or romaine lettuce by cutting the head.’

How to eliminate hot and cold spots in your home

Ultimately, it comes down to energy efficiency. Roughly 30% of our energy use is wasted due to building inefficiencies like inadequate insulation ideas, gaps or cracks around windows and doors, or outdated HVAC systems. These issues lead to energy waste through temperature loss, causing hot/cold spots throughout your home as well as more expensive energy bills.

Whether you are trying to cut energy bills when heating a home in winter or cool down a room more efficiently in summer, eliminating hot and cold spots will make your home more comfortable throughout the year, no matter the weather. Here's how.

1. Insulate your home

Frequent or severe hot and cold spots in a home could be a sign that you need to replace your insulation. Especially common in older homes, inadequate or outdated insulation can make your home much colder than you’d prefer. Proper insulation is key to keeping your home warm all day in the winter and cool in the summer.

It essentially acts as an airlock for your home, retaining your home heating and cooling and reducing energy waste.

Fortunately, you no longer have to remove drywall to add insulation as many contractors can supplement insulation already present with expanding foam insulation.

Attic insulation and attic doors are often overlooked areas, and usually need more insulation. You may also want to increase insulation in the walls that your home shares with the garage. Learn when you to insulate above a garage, and when you're better off leaving it alone.

2. Seal up gaps

The most common contributor to cold spots and your house from heating unevenly are small gaps and cracks around your windows and doors. 3. Upgrade your HVAC system

If your house is cooling unevenly, or not heating up despite DIY fixes, then it may be time to invest in a new HVAC system entirely.

If you’re in the market for a new home heating and cooling system, make sure it bears Energy Star certification. Energy Star is the government-backed symbol of energy efficiency, identifying high-performing systems and appliances that reduce your energy bills. If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old or not keeping your family comfortable, it’s likely time to upgrade.

Despite the large upfront cost, upgrading to an Energy Star-certified model can cut your home energy bills by $140 a year while improving the comfort of your home.

4. Clean and service your system

Another issue that could cause cold or hot spots throughout your home is blocked, dirty, or obstructed air vents and ducts.

Check over and clean your HVAC system regularly, including checking inside the ducts and vents and removing any clutter or debris. Additionally, make sure no vents are covered up by your furniture. This is a common cause of cold spots because the warm air can easily get trapped under couches, beds, or entertainment centers. Keeping vents clear of obstructions will make your home much more comfortable.

When you rent out a property, you accept the pros with the cons. Renter complaints are part and parcel of the business. But these are the five you should never delay dealing with.

As a landlord you will have any number of legal and ethical obligations to your renters, but delaying these fixes including mold and electrical or heating issues might cause you a bigger headache in the longer term, or even lead to a costly legal dispute, say our real estate pros.

Whilst your renters will try to make the rental feel more like home, it's still your responsibility to regularly maintain many aspects of the property and fix problems that arise quickly.

Renter complaints never to ignore as a landlord

Most US states have laws about how quickly any renter problems that are deemed 'imminently hazardous to life' must be attended to, though it’s usually somewhere between 24 and 48 hours.

For the less urgent but still important complains, our experts have five key ones to watch out for and deal with as quickly as possible.

1. Mold complaints

If your rental property has any serious or common type of household mold, tenants have the right to withhold rent or sue for failings in the living standard of the property. In California for example, landlords are allowed a period of 30 days to deal with mold issues and usually try to limit liability by dealing with it straight away.

According to real estate attorney Jonathan Feniak, specifically ignoring a complaint about mold is extremely detrimental. Legally, landlords are bound under US laws, such as the Residential Landlord-Tenant Act, to maintain rental units in a habitable condition, which includes controlling mold.

‘Failure to deal with mold complaints promptly might escalate to violations of health codes, resulting in fines or legal suits,’ says Jonathan. ‘Additionally, unchecked mold can cause health problems for tenants, making the landlord liable for medical expenses if negligence by the landlord can be proved.’

‘Pest infestations should be dealt with as soon as they are reported,’ recommends real estate specialist Martin Boonzaayer. ‘Even a small infestation can quickly grow into a much bigger problem. If pests are not dealt with quickly, they can damage your property and lead to tenant dissatisfaction. Tenants may decide to move out, file complaints, or even take legal action, resulting in lost income and costly repairs.’

Most states require landlords to maintain pest-free properties. Failure to address infestations promptly may violate local tenant laws, giving tenants the right to sue or withhold rent. When you don't have a tumble dryer, drying laundry in winter is a constant battle. Long drying times, musty smells, and the risk of mold make this already tedious task that bit more annoying.

Not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on a tumble dryer, I needed to find an alternative solution to covering my radiators and vents.

I have never owned a clothes dryer. It wasn’t something my parents ever needed when I was growing up, and living without one has been my norm. In fact, I've used a dryer only once in 24 years.

As a result, I have become an expert at drying clothes indoors in winter. I've learned through many years of trial and error how to avoid musty odors and clothes that stay damp indoors for days.

Now, I have achieved the perfect setup to dry clothes indoors in winter, with just a few smart investments, and it costs far less than one of the best clothes dryers.

How to dry clothes indoors in winter perfectly

While it is possible to dry laundry outside in winter, you don’t reap the same benefits of air-drying laundry as in spring and summer. Hanging outside is my preferred method to dry clothes quickly, but it gets so cold and wet in winter where I live in the UK that it isn’t worth running in and out to save fresh washing from the unpredictable rain.

Instead, I rely on two trusty laundry room essentials – a large clothes drying rack, and the best dehumidifier, such as the top-rated Amazon Basics 50-Pint Dehumidifier to negate any risks of drying clothes indoors, like mold and increased humidity.

1. Finish laundry with a spin and drain cycle

I start by doing laundry as normal, using the same detergents and wash cycles as I always do, remembering to follow the laundry symbols on the care tags.

Afterwards, I empty the laundry out and haul it up to my home office. I am constantly faced with the challenge of trying to dry clothes in a small space, and this room is the best place to keep the drying rack out of the way. 2. Get your dehumidifier placement right

3. Don’t stuff too many clothes together

You need some gaps to allow for good airflow, even with the dehumidifier below, or else your clothes will take too long to dry and risk smelling or even going moldy.

When I need to dry a lot of laundry in one go, I try to alternate thicker pieces of clothing with thinner garments to stop things from touching. More often than not, though, I will run a slightly smaller cycle to ensure everything fits on.

4. Keep the room warm

Technically, the only thing you need to get clothes dry or to dry a duvet without a dryer is constantly moving air (which is why you can still dry laundry outside on cold or cloudy days so long as it is windy), however, it certainly helps if the room is warm when drying laundry inside in winter.

There are several ways to make your heating more efficient. To dry clothes indoors in colder times of the year, I check to make sure there is nothing blocking my radiator and close the room door to keep heat trapped. With the dehumidifier running, the room heats up more quickly, and I don’t need to worry about mold growth.

5. Remove items as they dry

This is not something I do religiously, but whenever I am in the office or passing by, I will give the items on the dryer a quick squeeze. I anything is already fully dry, I will take it off and put it away to give the thicker, damper items more room to breathe and dry.

When everything is dry, it is folded away and the clothes rack is stowed to one side ready for the next laundry load.

'These tiny birds typically construct their nests on top of a branch or at the join of two branches. To avoid disturbing nests, do not trim trees, shrubs or hedges where you think hummingbirds might be nesting in the fall or winter. Instead, wait until early spring, before the breeding season brings and the bulk of hummingbirds return to the US in April.'

3. Plant winter flowering shrubs for hummingbirds

While it is a good idea to hang a feeder in your yard, it is far preferable to provide plenty of winter flowering native plants that hummingbirds will enjoy. What's more, providing plenty of nectar-rich plants will also encourage hummingbirds to make a home nearby, encouraging them to stop off whether they migrate or remain for the winter.

You may not know it, but air vents are a prime spot to check for mold in your house. These warm, often dark, and humidity-prone spots are primed for mold spores to thrive, and failing to keep these areas in check are a mold risk, say HVAC pros.

We spoke to an expert in air vents and home ventilation to learn about the most common causes of air vent mold, and how to stop mold from developing near them in the future.

1. Ensure your air vent has received maintenance

If your air vent hasn't received professional maintenance in as long as you can remember, the mold in your vents you've now spotted is a cry for help.

Mold can develop on and in an air ventilation system if it's emitting poor air flow, which can happen for so many reasons from broken coils to clogged filters. So, to help avoid mold from growing in this area of your home, up-keeping maintenance and avoiding bad habits that increase the risk of mold are a must.

Jessica Cormier of PureAC says, 'Mold on air vents is usually caused by a set few circumstances, including poor air flow and skipped maintenance.'

Make sure to get your vents checked to see if they need replacing and if replacement isn't necessary, ask to help diagnose the cause behind your vent's issue.

If you're unsure if you should keep your crawl space air vents closed or open, it will depend on whether the crawl space is sealed, as well as the humidity and weather conditions of your region.

2. Clean your air vent, inside and out

When giving your home a good wipe down, you may be wiping the outside of your air vents to keep their surfaces shining. However, if the inside of the vent itself is left unattended, it can become the perfect breeding ground for mold.

This is largely due to air filters becoming clogged with regular household dust and mold spores from the air, and when these are combined with the internal humidity of the filter, it can create a dark, damp space that often goes unchecked.

'Clogged air filters, leaky ducts trap dust and moisture feed mold spores,' says Jessica. 'And if your HVAC or mini-split system isn’t cleaned regularly, it can harbor mold, which eventually spreads to your vents.'

Jessica shared the following step-by-step breakdown to effectively clean vents around your home:

1. Turn off the system: Switch off your HVAC or AC to avoid spreading spores while you work.
2. Gear up: Put on gloves, a mask that filters mold spores out, and goggles to protect yourself.
3. Remove and clean the vent cover: Unscrew the cover and wash it with soapy water or a vinegar solution. For stubborn mold, use a mold-specific cleaner. The ECOS parsley all purpose cleaner from Walmart is a great choice to use when cleaning an air vent of mold as it's made from all-natural ingredients and won't leave behind a strong scent. If you're dealing with tougher mold battles, the RMR-86 instant mold and mildew stain remover, also from Walmart, will work well to banish mold for good.
4. Clean inside the vent: Wipe down the interior with the same solution, or use a small brush for hard-to-reach spots.
5. Dry everything: Make sure the cover and vent are completely dry to stop mold from coming back as moisture is one of the key things mold spore need to thrive.

3. Monitor your home's humidity level

Homes that are high in humidity are likely to attract mold, including on their air vents. A humid home can be the result of your region's climate, a lack of general ventilation and various other factors, causing excess moisture to develop in and on your air vent that can turn into mold. 'High humidity is a big culprit,' says Jessica. 'When warm, moist air hits the cool surfaces of vents, condensation forms, creating a perfect home for mold.'

'Sealing duct work can stop moisture buildup from happening inside of your vents,' says Jessica.

But to prevent the problem from happening at the root cause, have your duct work assessed by a professional if you suspect leaks or can't find the root cause of your mold issue.

It’s a simple question with not such a simple answer as Michael Rubino, mold and air quality expert and founder of HomeCleanse explains, ‘In most cases, keeping crawl space vents closed year-round is best, especially if the crawl space is encapsulated or has a vapor barrier.

‘It helps control moisture levels, stabilize temperatures, and prevent mold or pest infestations.’ It's a helpful step to help get rid of common winter pest infestations.

As a rule of thumb, Rubino advises the two following parameters to consider:

• Seasonal adjustments: It may be beneficial for vents to be opened briefly during dry or mild months, typically spring or fall, to facilitate air exchange. However, open periods should be limited to a few hours daily on dry days, preferably in the early morning or late afternoon.
• Ideal schedule: In most cases, vents can be left closed year-round, especially if the crawl space is sealed and equipped with a dehumidifier. Homeowners in dry climates may choose to open vents for limited hours weekly during the driest months, but they should contact a qualified professional first to ensure that it won't create unwanted issues.

Rubio share when you open your vents to be mindful of duration and dehumidifiers, explaining, ‘Without one of the best dehumidifiers, you’d want the vents open and cross ventilation to ensure the humidity doesn’t become stagnant’.

In arid or colder climates, Rubino says, ‘Temporary ventilation during milder seasons can help mitigate any buildup of stale air if they’re not sealed. That being said, they should never be open during the winter months as cold air flows directly into the crawl space, making it difficult to maintain a stable, warmer temperature around plumbing lines, often resulting in frozen or burst pipes.’

Definitely a plumbing disaster to avoid.

What is a crawl space and how does it work?

Shu Saito, plumber and water filtration expert at All Filters LLC explains, ‘A crawl space is an open area beneath the house floor that provides access to utilities like plumbing, electrical wiring, and HVAC.’

They get their name from the fact that you typically have enough space to crawl around in as Saito shares, ‘Crawl spaces are relatively small in height, normally in the range of 1-3 feet, and have just enough space for partial movements that enable maintenance and repair.’

But they are not just there for access to utilities, Saito continues, ‘They work to insulate the home and regulate moisture inside the home if they are serviced adequately and the crawl space ventilation is appropriately implemented.’

But if a crawl space isn’t adequately maintained or ventilated Saito warns, it can cause unwanted issues as leading to mold growth which will eventually cause structural damages.

Check for common types of household mold and make sure to get rid of them and find their source.

Types of crawl spaces vents

There are a number of crawl space vent types, with automatic, manual, and powered vents being the common options found in the home. Here Saito explains the different types and how they work:

• Automatic vents: These open and close themselves depending on the temperature and humidity. In locations with a moderate climate, these features can work well. You can find automatic vents at The Home Depot.
• Manual vents: They need to be adjusted often, although they typically prove to be cheaper and simpler. Having looked through the options for manual vents available, they are generally not highly rated by shoppers, but they are cheaper. We usually only recommend items with at least 4.5 stars out of 5, but 4/5 was the best we could find at a cheap price point, with the Master Flow manual vent from The Home Depot. Their aluminium manual vent with dampener is highly rated with 5 stars, but is over $200 dollars a piece.
• Powered vents: These use a fan for airflow and ensure better control, but an energy source can be required at times. There are mid-range prices on offer for this electric powered vent at The Home Depot.

How many you need may influence your decision to balance your budget. Saito advises, ‘Standard requirements commonly include ventilation and you need one square foot of vent space for every 150 square feet in the crawl space’.

That calculation is with no vapor barrier installed. If you have a vapor barrier installed, such as the Viper CS Crawl Space Class A Woven Reinforced Vapor Barrier from Insulation4US, which Saito recommends, it's one square foot of vent space for every 300 square feet.

However, Saito says it's worth noting the newest building practices are leaning towards sealing crawl spaces due to the many advantages of controlling the environment.

Saito adds, ‘When the soil or the weather conditions in an area make it difficult to construct basements, some access beneath the home is necessary, this is when a crawl space is more common.’

How much does a crawl space vent cost?

This will depend on what type of crawl space vent is going to be used. At the lower end of the price scale are manual vents. Saito shares, ‘Manual crawl space vents, which are usually $15 to $25 per unit, run lower than the automatic crawl space vents like this Master Flow Automatic Foundation Vent from Home Depot, which can be as high as $50 per unit or more, depending on the model.’

Further up the price scale are powered vents which cost more, Saito explains why, ‘Powered vents, of course, include fan systems and are somewhat expensive to buy, beginning at about $100 or higher, depending on how many pieces an individual may need.’

And it's not just the cost of the vent itself you need to think of as Saito adds, ‘Installation fees, if needed, would be an added cost. But, it all depends on the level of control you need.’

Should you seal up crawl space vents?

This will depend on where you live and the local climate. Saito suggests that, ‘Sealing is important but not without assessing the needs of the home.’ He adds, ‘It might be a decent option in humid or cold climates where intrusion by moisture or air can be an issue.’

Saito adds a note of caution, ‘Poor sealing with no ancillary methods of moisture control would ensure musty odors and unwanted smells, especially if there was water leakage in the area.’

Vernon Trollinger from texaselectricityratings.com has personal experience of crawl space vents and suggests, ‘You should completely seal up your crawl space and not use any venting at all. EnergyStar says a complete and thorough sealing (or "encapsulating") of your home's crawl space can save 15% off your annual heating and cooling bills.'

But this might not work everywhere, Trollinger adds, ‘Building research has shown that this whole approach in many parts of the US doesn't work very well at all due to moisture and humidity.’

It might be worth the effort and time of checking with an experienced local contractor to get advice for your area as the fallout of bad vent management or crawl space maintenance, sealing and closure can lead to mold and rot, a terrible issue for any home.

'Peat-free' has become a bit of a buzzword in the gardening world, and you may be asking yourself what it really means. The first thing you need to know is what peat actually is.

Peat is an organic layer of soil that forms from decomposed material, largely decomposed plants. This means it has plenty of nutrients that support plant growth, which is why it is often harvested for growing mediums. 'With carbon sequestration being necessary to support the health of our planet, we need to be protecting anything that keeps carbon out of the atmosphere. With the powerful way that peat bogs support carbon storage, it's essential to find an alternative to this resource,' Ren adds.

For that reason, you may be inclined to look for peat moss alternatives and may even be comparing peat moss and coco coir. Look no further as experts have shared below three peat alternatives you can use to grow flowers.

3 peat alternatives for growing flowers

Creating the perfect peat alternative medium for growing flowers requires some trial and error, and possibly a range of amendments to provide sufficient nutrients. Here are three peat alternatives to get started with.

1. Homemade compost

Making your own compost is a rewarding thing to do. Not only does it use up food waste ingredients and other materials, it's also an effective way to nourish your soil.

'Rich in nutrients and microbes, compost is an excellent peat alternative that you can add to your flower pots and beds,' says Ren. 'Not only that, but the act of composting is in itself a sustainable practice,' she adds.

'Ideally, I like to mix compost with some coconut coir and vermiculite for added aeration,' says Meredith Bishop, sustainable flower grower and owner of Bloom and Bounty. 'The compost provides a better nutritional structure for the growing plants, while the coco coir provides great draining and aeration for growing roots,' she explains.

2. Hugelkultur gardening

If you're looking to build a raised garden bed, consider an alternative approach that allows you to use a peat-free medium for growing flowers - hugelkultur gardening.

'Perfect for taller raised beds, hugelkultur uses logs, sticks, and wood chips as a base, then layers on organic materials like leaves and broken down manure before topping everything off with some compost,' explains Ren.

This technique originated in Germany and Austria, with 'hugelkultur' being a German translation of 'mound culture.' It essentially involves building a raised bed garden from organic materials, packing a punch in nutrients for your raised bed flowers.

'This is an inexpensive and peat-free way to fill up your raised beds. You will need to top up the beds as the lower layers break down,' Ren notes.

3. Rice hulls

It's no secret that even when starting flower seeds indoors, you need to ensure they have good drainage. Peat compost and peat moss both supply good drainage, but for a more sustainable alternative experts say to try using rice hulls.

Rice hulls are the hard outer cover of rice grains and a by-product of rice milling. They're commonly available online, like these rice hulls from Amazon.

'I've had excellent luck with rice hulls mixed into compost as both a seed starting medium and as part of soil mixes for potted plants,' says Ren.

They're particularly favored for their ability to absorb moisture, as well as the aeration they provide.

'If you have issues with fungus gnats on your potted flowers, mulching the top of your soil with rice hulls is known to be a good solution,' she adds.

'Since coffee filters are biodegradable, they gradually break down and can contribute nutrients to the soil over time,' Brad notes. There are many things I love about the colder months of the year, but condensation on the windows isn't one of them. It's an annual battle I have to face, and every year it results in horrible mold creeping around my windows.

I decided to try out four different methods to combat condensation, which are all cheap and easy to execute to see how effective they were, including wiping it away, opening windows and even lighting a candle on the windowsill.

Improving ventilation in your home and dehumidifying is the grounding for less condensation, but I was surprised by just how well cracking open a window worked.

What Happened When I Tried 4 Methods to Stop Window Condensation

If you're wondering if condensation inside windows is bad, you'll be glad to hear it is not a problem most of the time, especially if it is cleared away quickly. Leaving it for too long, or having too much condensation can lead to mold, however.

1. Wiping the Windows Down with Kitchen Roll

All you need to do to try this method for yourself is wipe the condensation off of your windows using kitchen roll or a reusable cloth. If you opt for cloths like the microfiber cleaning cloths, available at Target, make sure to wash and dry them afterwards to avoid spreading mold spores around your home.

This method took me five minutes at most and was very easy to execute. However, whilst testing this over the course of two weeks, it become a pain wiping the windows down every day. Plus, you won't be awake in the middle of the night to deal with the condensation when it comes back.

I have previously found wiping my windows to be useful in the autumn months if I wake up with condensation on my window panes once a day in the morning. But in winter, when the condensation returns throughout the day, this method isn't the best solution.

It will help someway to stopping mold growing as you are manually removing the moisture and any spores. But using a homemade window cleaning spray made from a dash of vinegar in a bottle of water to clean your windows would be more effective than wiping them down, as vinegar is a natural mold killer.

My verdict: 6/10. When condensation only appears once a day in milder weather, this worked as condensation did not come back after I wiped the windows. However, I give this method a 1/10 in winter as it will need repeating throughout the days many times.

Bob, a window expert from New Panes Creations concludes, 'This is a quick fix, but it only addresses surface moisture. It may help in the moment, but the condensation will likely return if the underlying humidity isn’t managed.'

2. Lighting a Candle on the Windowsill

There's something very cozy about lighting a candle and leaving it on the windowsill. It lights up the area in such a scenic way, and it would be such a bonus if the candle's warmth helped to keep condensation in check on your window panes. That was my hope when I spotted people trying this on social media.

When I tried this out for myself, I used a $1 fall-scented candle similar to the MOMKER candles from Walmart. But after seeing no progress on the condensation after 45 minutes I deemed this method a flop.

The following morning when condensation developed on my windows overnight, I tried this method again using a larger candle with a bigger wick: the WoodWick Ellipse Scented Candle in Fireside available at Walmart (my favorite candle ever) to much the same effect.

My verdict: 1/10. It didn't seem to do anything. So long as you don't leave the candle unattended, and there aren't any loose curtains or blind strings hanging down that make lighting a candle there a fire hazard, it won't be causing harm, but it certainly won't tackle condensation. I did enjoy making my house smell like fall though, so all was not lost.

Bob concludes, 'Lighting a candle can create a bit of warmth, which might help reduce condensation in the immediate area. However, it’s not a long-term solution and can pose a fire hazard if left unattended.'

3. Open the Windows For a While

Ventilation seems to be one of the best answers for reducing the humidity in my house, as I know the moisture in my warm inside-air is meeting the cool winter weather outside at my windows, resulting in condensation on the glass.

I tried opening my windows in the winter cold with condensation still on the panes to see how rapidly it would begin to clear up, despite fearing how cold my home would become. After half an hour, the condensation had begun to go away, but I feel it would have dissipated faster if I also had heating on in my room.

I did notice it took longer for the condensation to accumulate again on the window that was open than in other areas of the home, so it was definitely beneficial, plus my room felt fresher from the cool air coming in.

My verdict: 8/10. Opening the window worked well to dissipate the condensation that had gathered, and it stopped it coming back quite so soon. I would recommend turning on your heating at the same time though so the fresh air doesn't make your home too chilly.

When I gave this method a go with my heating on it worked much better, leading to bumping up my verdict to a 10/10 – and into first place. Regularly opening your windows to ventilate your house with the heating on will help keep window condensation at bay.

Bob concludes, 'This is one of the best long-term solutions. Fresh air helps reduce humidity levels inside, which can significantly decrease condensation on windows.'

4. Place a Moisture Absorber on the Windowsill

Moisture absorbers don't break the bank and come in many forms. I recommend using a simple moisture absorber box from Amazon, budget dehumidifiers, or scented hanging moisture absorbers including Amazon's CANAGER dehumidifier bags for a job well done.

Stopping mold forming around my windows was the most important factor for me, so although my blue moisture absorber box was a bit of an eyesore, I could live with it. It's not impossible to hide these moisture absorbers behind decorative items such as vases and picture frames as well, so they don't have to remain an eyesore forever.

After sitting for around an hour on my windowsill, the condensation on the glass panes cleared up. I didn't see any water collecting in the container of the moisture absorber yet, so I left it there all day and overnight, keen to see if there was water in there the next day and whether any condensation appeared on the windows in the morning.

Condensation still appeared on my window the following day and I didn't see anything collecting in the container yet. The packaging said the moisture absorber would last between five and six weeks, so it may have been working slowly and still kicking in.

After a week had passed of testing the moisture absorber, I noticed a marked decrease in the amount of condensation on my windows and liquid visibly collecting in the container.

My verdict: 6/10. This method definitely helped tackle the problem even if it looked a bit unsightly. Window expert Bob adds, 'Placing a moisture absorber on your windowsill is effective, but the amount of them needed to combat condensation in an entire home can be unsightly.'

A dehumidifier, even a budget one such as the five-star rated Beewin small dehumidifier from Amazon, would work even better and I am seriously considering getting one in my house. If I do, I will update this article to let you know the outcome.

Are There Any More Effective Methods to Combat Condensation?

Window expert Bob shared the following as potentially more effective options for those who don't want to keep opening their windows in the cold weather.

• Dehumidifiers: 'Use a dehumidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels.' The ToLife 95 oz dehumidifier from Amazon has great reviews and boasts being small and portable, ideal for any space.'
• Insulation: 'Ensure windows are properly insulated. Newer double or triple-paned windows can help keep the interior surface warmer, reducing the likelihood of condensation.'
• Heating: 'Maintain a consistent indoor temperature. Heating your home can help keep window surfaces warm, reducing condensation.'
• There are plenty of home products to help you keep track of the temperature of your rooms, including Target's ThermoPro TP358W hygrometer indoor thermometer, which connects to your phone through Bluetooth technology.
• Window treatments: 'Use insulated curtains or shades to minimize temperature differences between indoor and outdoor air.'
• Using a window vacuum: You can also effectively avoid damp, mold and mildew by investing in a window vacuum miracle product to curb condensation.
• Dish soap: One of Homes & Gardens' contributing writers tried a simple dish soap hack and found it to be effective in preventing window condensation for at least a week.

My Conclusion

From my winter condensation experiment, I have found switching on your heating, sitting a moisture absorber on your windowsill and cracking the window once or twice a day will provide the best combination to combat your condensation.

This trio will tackle the problem from all directions, removing moisture from the air, heating up your cold window panes and ventilating the room.

A dehumidifier is a great alternative (and often more stylish) option to a moisture absorber, although they may be more expensive.

If you're staying in the room, lighting a candle on the windowsill wouldn't be a bad thing, but it isn't going to solve the problem all on its own. The same goes for wiping down your windows manually: it's a great quick-fix solution to remove the damp from festering on your windows, but it will keep coming back until a more effective solution tackles the core of the problem: indoor humidity.

Going forward, I'm going to keep wiping down my windows while searching for a nice dehumidifier. I'll also switch on the heating at peak condensation times of the day (mainly the morning and early AM hours), and make more of an effort top crack open my windows as well, even if it's only for 10 minutes.

Punteha, head of Solved, adds, 'Running my heating constantly at 21 degrees Centigrade, (around 70° Fahrenheit) and opening the windows for 10 minutes in the morning is my winning combination for stopping condensation creeping up around windows in the winter and I've been doing it for years.'

Is there any event in your home that makes your heart sink more than a leak in the ceiling? Arguably, it's my most dreaded problem as a homeowner and has now happened to me twice.

The most recent leak was on the tail of a particularly tricky few days, and truly the last thing my household needed. That's why I threw everything my plumber told me to do at the stain to dry the water leak out ASAP and avoid the dreaded curse of mold.

And, to my delight, the winning combination of using a fan, dehumidifier and heating in tandem worked a treat. If you have found and fixed a common household leak, the next step is drying out the area impacted as quickly as you can to avert more disaster.

How to dry a ceiling leak quickly

Ceiling leaks bring with it a host of problems. Besides the obvious inconvenience of water drips and stains, the damp creates the perfect environment for mold, mildew and can compromise the integrity of your wall plaster and insulation if not dealt with quickly.

My leak happened very suddenly last week and turned out to be a broken washer on the toilet in the en suite bathroom above our kitchen. Once our plumber had fixed the ceiling leak, I asked him how best to dry the wall out as the plaster had turned chalky from the moisture and the last thing I want in my kitchen is mold.

He told me to ideally use his 'magic trio', which includes air movement, heating and dehumidifying. I set to work as soon as he left.

If your household leaks goes through a ceiling with insulation, make sure to check on that as some types of attic insulation can become a breeding ground for mold if it gets wet and will need extra care and attention.

What I did to dry a ceiling leak in three days

I did not have a dehumidifier so I went onto Amazon and ordered one to arrive next day using my Prime membership. I live in the UK and went for a budget-friendly, small, 1800 ml dehumidifier with a 5/5 star customer rating, a timer and and auto shut-off function, much like the highly-rated and popular BREEZOME 60 OZ Dehumidifier on Amazon in the US.

In the mean time, in the first 24 hours after the ceiling leak in my home, I opened the two radiators in my kitchen, one of which is directly under the leak, and the other perpendicular to it, and set the heating to run at 23° Centigrade, which is 73.4 Fahrenheit. This is as warm as my family and I can tolerate it to run but the hotter you can bear it, the better, my plumber said.

Sydney Archer of Kiser Renovations has over 20 years water damage experience and agrees, adding, 'If you don’t have a dehumidifier or other industrial drying equipment and have not called for professional water mitigation services, set up every fan you have to start drying out the space.'

Sydney warns failure to dry out the space can lead to mold growth in as little as 24-28 hours.

I also kept the kitchen doors and windows closed to stop the heat immediately escaping. I moved my Pelonis tower fan from Amazon onto the dining table and pointed it at the area that was wet. The height of the tower fan helped keep air moving to, and moisture away from the damp patch, and improved ventilation.

As we often dry our laundry in a small space on drying racks in the kitchen-diner, I felt the humidity every time I went into the room. But, until the dehumidifier arrived, I simply opened up the kitchen door for five-minute bursts to reduce the humidity of the space every few hours. It was enough to drop the saturation levels somewhat, without letting all that heat out as in the UK, the temperature was just above freezing when the leak happened.

Sydney adds, 'You should also open all of your windows to help get air moving through the house. Any furniture or other belongings that have water damage should be removed from the house. Some of these items may be able to be saved through professional cleaning services while others may have to be thrown away.’

Once my new dehumidifier arrived, it took just a couple of minutes to set up and I put it on a 24-hour timer. It collected around 10 ml of water an hour from the room and the difference in humidity was palpable.

How this combination worked to dry my ceiling

I was thrilled to feel a noticeable difference from the heating and fan combination in the first 24 hours, but it was when my new best dehumidifier was added to the mix that it really turbocharged the drying out.

Now after 72 hours, the plaster is dry to the touch and I am no longer concerned about the risk of mold, or painting over it soon. Just to be safe, I'm giving it another week of this magic combo to ensure the internal areas have dried too and won't seep through to the surface, as I am planning on using a washable wall paint to go over the water mark and don't want to lock in moisture unwittingly.

Mark Zehnal, director of Fortified Roof at the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety begins, ‘A roof is a home’s first line of defense when preparing a home for a thunderstorm. When it fails, wind and rain can enter a home and create a cascade of damage that makes a home unlivable.

'In fact, IBHS studies show that after natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and derechos, as many as 90% of insurance claims include damage to the roof. So, it’s critical to keep up with necessary maintenance.’

These checks, no matter the type of roof you have, will also help avoid mold and mildew problems.

1. Where pipes enter the roof

A common home maintenance mistake in winter is checking roof tiles and forgetting the spots where something enters the roof, such as pipework and flues, begins Todd Miller, president at Isaiah Industries.

‘One of the most common places of roof maintenance is the boots [the plastic covering] that seal around pipes that come through the roof. Oftentimes, these boots or flashing have a rubber seal, and those seals crack and break over time. This typically is not a difficult report but, if not addressed, it will lead to a roof leak and damage, oftentimes in the kitchen or a bathroom.’

Head of Solved, Punteha van Terheyden has experience of this. 'In the first home I bough, it had a converted attic space we used as an extra room. There was one wall that seemed to randomly get a wet patch. It turned out to be failed flashing on the chimney roof-side, and once that was sorted and the inner wall dried out, we never had that problem again.'

2. Chimneys

Prepping your chimney for winter takes more than knowing how often to clean your chimney. You also need to inspect the masonry itself, continues Todd Miller, roofing expert.

‘Leaking around chimneys or other masonry walls that extend through the roof is another common complaint. However, this is usually due to the degradation of the masonry or mortar, not the roof. Use binoculars, available at Amazon, if necessary but if you see missing mortar, cracked masonry or bricks, etc, there's a good chance that heavy rain will bring leaks. These things should be addressed by a mason,’ he adds.

3. Check for loose tiles

The right roof tiles can improve your home, but they won’t be any good if they have come loose. Anthony Perera, founder of Peak Roofing Partners suggests, ‘Inspect[ing] your shingles for any signs of damage, curling, or missing pieces. Compromised shingles can lead to leaks and water damage during heavy rains. Replace any damaged shingles promptly to maintain your roof's integrity.’

4. Attic insulation

Your insulation plays a huge role in ensuring your attic is safe, so it is worth checking it over when inspecting your roof, says Todd Miller, roofing expert. ‘If you have had insulation added to your attic, make sure it is not blocking the intake vents in your home's overhanging soffits. Blocked intake vents will disrupt attic ventilation which can be a chief cause of rooftop ice dams in the winter, caused by hot spots on the roof.’

Ice dams can then lead to roof damage, resulting in leaks. If you have fibreglass insulation and it gets wet, it can easily become a breeding ground for mold. 5. Clear gutters and downspouts

On the subject of ice dams, it is a good idea to clean your gutters to prevent gutters from clogging, as these issues can lead to ice and leaks, says Peter Duncanson, VP of training and development at ServiceMaster Restore. ‘Homeowners should clear gutters and downspouts of debris to ensure proper drainage and prevent water from backing up onto the roof.’

While cleaning, check your gutters and downspout for any sign of wear and tear, including cracks or areas it is pulling away from the roof. Fixing these problems quickly will prevent more costly water damage down the line.
