Last year, Los Angeles–based home brand Lulu and Georgia reached out to fellow Angeleno Portola Paints with a problem: paint. L&G’s style-savvy clientele knew their sofas from their settees, but paint colors proved to be a persistent pain point.

The resolution was simple: Lulu didn’t make paint. Portola did.

More than your standard neutral paint, Kayla adds, 'Blank Canvas reads as a soft warm white with a hint of sunlit cream. It works beautifully across full walls or on trim and molding, where it feels tailored rather than sharp. Even Better Beige leans into a subtle sand tone with a limestone-like warmth that gives walls quiet substance without heaviness, a welcome quality in north-facing rooms that can otherwise feel cool and flat.'

It wasn't just neutrals that were popular in 2025; Kayla reveals jewel tones received plenty of appreciation. 'At the same time, we saw a rise in homeowner preference for richer tones. 'Our 2025 most sampled paint colors showed the green color family emerging as a top choice,' says Helen. 'Shades such as Saybrook Sage HC-114 and Vintage Vogue 462 both ranked highly, highlighting a strong desire to bring a soothing and grounding, nature-inspired energy into the home.'

'These rich, layered greens with their dynamic undertones evoke a sense of calm and harmony and are particularly well-suited to traditional interiors, where they add depth and a quietly vibrant presence without overwhelming a space,' – meaning they're perfect for living room color schemes, bedroom color ideas, or even statement trims or cabinetry.

Benjamin Moore's Saybrook Sage has proved popular time and time again, with designers claiming it's one of the best sage green paints on the market. In this stylish kitchen, pictured above, Taylor Sims, lead designer and CEO of Canada-based Sims Home, used the sage shade on cabinetry to give the space a functional refresh.

'I treated it like a neutral, and I love using it to bring an organic, grounded feel to a space,' she says. 'The Saybrook Sage cabinets brought so much warmth and character, combined with light, refurbished dark wood flooring, and natural textures.'

Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, named Benjamin Moore’s 2025 Color of the Year, also made the top sampled list. 'This versatile shade embodies the concept of “in-between hues,” allowing homeowners to embrace color in a subtle, muted way.'

As you can see in the heritage space above, this mauve hue is not too saturated, combining the warmth of plum with more neutral brown tones, an incredibly livable paint color. Appearing to have almost a powdery look, this color is restful, allowing you to tap into the growing purple trend without veering too dark or bold.

'Its nuanced blend of heathered plum and velvety brown creates a warm, familiar feel, making it both inviting and stylish, so it’s no wonder it has become a favorite for creating spaces that feel simultaneously contemporary and comforting,' Helen adds.

Of course, classic white and warm neutrals remained an enduring favorite among decorators in 2025 – with Simply White OC-117 at the top of the list.

Jennifer Davis of Davis Interiors, who chose to decorate with Benjamin Moore's Simply White in this timeless blue and white kitchen, adds: 'It is clean and bright without feeling cold or sterile. There is a touch of warmth that makes it feel welcoming.'

'White also maintained its place as a perennial favourite – simple, clean and classic, it is a timeless choice that has the power to make a space feel spacious and fresh,' says Helen. 'While some might consider it plain, it has the power to create a refuge for busy minds, making it an excellent choice where a sense of calm is paramount.'

'The key here is to choose a warm white with nuanced undertones, such as Swiss Coffee OC-45 or White Dove OC-17, that doesn’t feel too stark,' she advises, noting hues in our list of the 5 best Benjamin Moore white paints.

'The new direction embraces “quietly colorful” tones – subtle, comforting hues that feel fresh yet timeless,' she adds. 'Neutrals with pink and red undertones like First Crush CSP-310 are becoming increasingly popular, bringing warmth and depth to bedrooms and living spaces.'

'Plaster pinks and soft dusky rose shades like Batik AF-610 add an earthy, grounded feel while providing a perfect foundation for layered décor and evolving personal style.'

But when I moved into my own small living room, I wanted to find ways to create the illusion of height without having to resort to structural changes. Thankfully, I discovered the color capping trend just at the right moment.

Described as a tonal technique that graduates color up to the ceiling to 'draw the eye upward and create a sense of polish', this clever paint trick is the easiest way to make a small living room look bigger. But don't just take my word for it.

Why you should 'color cap' your living room

Simply put, this color trend is a paint technique that subtly creates a tonal escalation of color. And unlike color drenching, which washes a space in one bold hue, color capping works with subtle gradients from the same color family.

Typically, the idea is to start at the baseboards with the lightest hue, then graduate with a medium wash of color on the walls, and end with a richer ceiling paint.

'It can be cleverly used to create the illusion of more height and space,' explains Helen Shaw, director of marketing at Benjamin Moore. 'When done with care, a soft, tonal shift between the walls and ceiling allows the eye to travel upward without interruption, visually lifting the ceiling.'

'By avoiding stark contrasts or heavy dark tones overhead, and instead using mid-depth shades that gently graduate, the room feels more open and expansive while still retaining character and warmth.'

'For small living rooms where every inch matters, this illusion of expanded volume can be game-changing,' adds designer Nina Lichtenstein.

'The effect of color capping in a small living room is twofold: the ceiling feels like a natural extension of the space rather than a hard stop, and the darker cap overhead visually recedes, tricking the eye into perceiving greater height,' she adds.

Even in a neutral living room, just shifting a shade or two deeper at the top changes the proportions dramatically and creates a more dynamic living room color scheme.

'Imagine walls in a creamy stone, molding in warm sand, and a ceiling in soft mushroom; the space suddenly feels cocooning and intimate, yet larger at the same time,' says Nina.

'In a small living room, color capping can instantly make the space feel cozy and inviting,' adds Helen. 'This gentle wrap of color makes the space feel intentional and polished, while also enhancing the sense of comfort that a smaller room naturally provides.'

'Painting the ceiling a different color or even letting it bleed 10-12 inches down the wall creates this beautiful, cocooned effect,' agrees designer Kristina Khersonsky of STUDIO KEETA. 'It adds depth, warmth, and visual interest, especially in smaller spaces.'

It can also be an incredible way to emphasize or even create the illusion of architectural detail. In period homes, using slightly different tones can highlight original moldings and cornices. In newer spaces, this color combination adds depth and sophistication even when the trim is minimal.

'It doesn’t have to be high-contrast either. Using two slightly different tones within the same color family can create a layered, architectural feeling,' Kristina continues. 'It’s an old-school technique rooted in Italian design and fresco work, but when modernized, it brings so much soul to a room.'

On the other hand, designer Nicole Forina counters, adding: 'I think color capping is a fantastic idea – especially when it’s done with high-contrast colors that highlight beautiful architectural moldings on the ceiling. It creates a sense of intimacy and balance in a space that might otherwise feel overwhelming with very high ceilings.'

'Either way, the key is restraint,' advises Nina. 'Choose hues that share undertones so the transitions read intentional and fluid and echo those tones in upholstery, drapery, or even a throw to unify the palette, ensuring the entire room feels cohesive from sofa to ceiling.'

The beauty of this technique is its flexibility. Whether you want a cozy, cocooned vibe or a more airy feel, color capping allows you to play with scale, mood, and architectural detail simultaneously. Plus, it’s a trick that works with virtually any room color, from soft neutrals to bold, statement hues.

Every so often, a trend comes along that makes me rethink how I approach decorating, and right now, it’s the turn of 'color capping'.

Coined by the expert team at Benjamin Moore, this color trend has quickly caught the attention of the interiors world. Simply put, it is a tonal technique that flips layering on its head.

'By using paint in varying tones from the same color family, you can completely transform the mood and proportion of a room with this layered approach that draws the eye upward and creates a sense of polish in the space,' explains the brand's color expert, Helen Shaw.

If the color drenching drench hadn't already convinced you to ditch the stark white ceiling, and double drenching or the sandwich method have previously felt too bold, color capping might just be the tonal technique that finally changes your mind.

What is 'color capping'?

Unlike color drenching, which washes a space in one bold hue, color capping is a color trend that works with subtle gradients from the same hue. Think of it like creating an ombre effect with all five walls.

'Color capping is a clever way to refresh your home and achieve a high-end look with just a few tins of paint,' Benjamin Moore's Helen explains. 'It introduces subtle depth by enveloping the room in a tonal gradient that intensifies toward the ceiling.'

The principle is simple: choose two or three tones from the same color family, then apply them in a gentle gradient. Essentially, lighter tones are used across the walls, mid-tones accent the trims or moldings, and the deepest shade “caps” the room at the ceiling, creating an accent ceiling without the harsh contrast.

'Think of color capping as a tonal gradient that leads your eye upward,' adds designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'Instead of one flat hue, you work with two or three shades from the same color family, getting deeper as you approach the ceiling.'

The result? A space that reads layered, polished, and dimensional.

Beyond its super chic finish, this room color idea is a smart tool for playing with space and proportion. 'Color capping is a great way to add the illusion of height to a room, particularly in bathrooms where space can be limited or in period homes with decorative features that can be highlighted, like a ceiling cornice,' explains Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands.

Nina agrees, adding that 'by visually blending the high parts of the wall into a darker ceiling, the planes feel farther away, which can make rooms read bigger or ceilings feel taller without moving a single beam.'

Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene, says it works similarly to the double drenching technique, but in a more delicate way. 'It takes the double drenching technique but incorporates tonal shades of the same color, rather than using multiple shades from the same color family with varying undertones,' she explains.

'It is essentially the use of ‘color scales’ to envelop a space, taking colors of different strengths from the same family across all elements, ceilings, walls, and woodwork to drench a space in tonal color.'

'The transition then feels intentional and harmonious,' adds Nina. 'Sticking to related hues, or colors that naturally complement each other, keeps the gradient calm, sophisticated, and convincing.'

The key to its success lies in the versatility of the technique, no matter if you live in a period home or a more contemporary property.

Helen says: 'In older properties, it can highlight architectural features such as cornices and picture rails, whereas in newer or more minimalist spaces, it adds dimension, making flat surfaces feel more dynamic and visually interesting.'

Because it helps with differing proportions, color capping works in a wide range of rooms. It can make bathrooms appear taller, highlight living room architecture, or create a cocooning effect in bedrooms – all while making the fifth wall part of the design story.

Helen adds that even a small room will benefit, as the layered look instantly 'makes even the most modest room feel considered and like they’ve had that ‘designer touch’.'

What colors work with color capping?

Taking the guesswork out of choosing color combinations for rooms, this technique lends a helping hand to the color-shy and works beautifully when decorating with neutrals or more hushed, quiet luxury color schemes.

'Choose shades that share undertones (for example: soft clay for the walls, warmer terracotta for the molding, and a deeper cap overhead),' suggests Nina. 'If you don’t have molding to break the tones, stop the wall color just shy of the top and let the ceiling carry the darkest tone. It’s an easy way to build nuance without busy paint tricks, and it works in neutrals just as beautifully as with bolder color; an off-white room can feel subtly elevated when the ceiling shifts only a step or two deeper.'

'Color choices can depend on personal preferences, but using tonal colors, such as pairing a natural olive shade like Serpentine with an olive shade with yellow undertones like London Plane, gives a subtle sense of cohesion,' Dominic adds.

That said, color capping also has room for bolder interpretations. Jewel tones, earthy pinks, or green room ideas can create drama and dimension, especially when graduated from light to dark.

'We offer a range of colors that have been designed to work in combination in this way, using graduated tones made using the same pigments, but in different strengths, allowing for the creation of a harmonious design scheme that provides movement within a space,' says Ruth.

'These tones are easy to use in combination on walls, ceiling, and trim as well as providing a seamless color journey from room to room,' she adds. 'For something bolder, you can highlight architectural features or areas of interest by using vibrant, contrasting colours like Tuscan Red or Bronze Red alongside Masquerade to add drama to a space.'

'Whether you opt for soft neutrals or rich jewel tones, color capping brings a layered sophistication to any space,' adds Helen.

Finally, the most successful 'color-capped' schemes are the ones that don’t stop at the ceiling line. Try to echo your palette in the textiles, window treatments, and upholstery in the room to ensure the space feels cohesive from floor to ceiling.

Luckily, you don’t need to whip out the roller again to freshen them up, so long as you use the right tools to dust walls regularly, professional cleaners say.

Here, they explain why cleaning walls is not just a pre-painting prep task and how to prevent dust from making your walls look dull with a simple monthly mop trick.

How managing dust prevents dull walls

For many of us, the only time we consider dusting vertical spaces is when cleaning walls before painting or removing scuff marks from walls. However, as Steven Ip, cleaning expert with Cleanzen, shares, ‘Yes, regularly dusting your walls will help improve the look of it overall, including how vibrant the paint can look, prolonging the life of your paint job.

'Over time, your wall collects not only dust but also oil particles from cooking, steam, and other residue floating around in the house. If left uncleaned, the buildup can contribute to the dullness and also attract mold growth during humid conditions.’

Seeing as walls are one of the places where hidden dust builds up fast in a home, it's a great trick to help reduce allergens, too.

To make this cleaning tip easier, Jade Piper, operations manager at BetterCleans, explains, ‘Your first port of call should be to dust walls with a dry microfiber cloth [from Walmart] or a dry Swiffer mop [available at Target].

‘If they are still looking a little worse for wear, then you can go in with a clean mop dampened with a little water and regular dish soap, such as Dawn, from Walmart. You only want a very small amount of water to avoid damaging your paint or paper.’

The O-Cedar Spin Mop, also from Target, comes with a spin bucket to help you remove as much water as possible from your mop head before cleaning, although we recommend brushing up on how to clean and maintain every type of paint finish, as some paints don’t take kindly to water at all.

Jade continues, ‘Follow up with a dry microfiber immediately after rinsing. If you’re doing a lot of wall space, it’s better to work in small sections so that no areas stay wet for too long and you avoid any patchy-looking spots.’

It is not just the dust settling in your home that you should consider. To prevent dust for a consistently clean space, Steven continues, ‘HVAC filters are also a factor in dust on walls. If they are not cleaned regularly, more dust will likely stick to the walls and create a buildup. When cleaned, the filters trap more dust effectively. Ideally, cleaning your HVAC system and focusing on your filters every one to three months helps.’

Over time, your HVAC filters will need to be replaced to maintain efficiency and avoid dusting mistakes, making your home dirtier. To find the correct filters for your make and model, refer to the user handbook (usually also found on the manufacturer's website if you have lost yours).

1. Kitchen cabinets

If you're debating painting the kitchen cabinets, it's good to know that whilst wood cabinets will be OK if prepped properly, if your cabinets are vinyl-coated, then it's a big no-no.

Kelly Mardis, owner of Marcel Painting, explains, 'I know so many people who insist on painting or having professional paint vinyl cabinets and drawers, and I can not stress enough that this is a terrible idea. Paint will not stay on vinyl cabinets, as there is nothing for the paint to grab onto.

'Every time you bump into it, the paint on your cabinets will chip, and it will look terrible very quickly. Don't paint vinyl cabinets. If someone asks me to do a job like that, I tell them no because I know I know the job won't meet the standard of quality I set.'

On the flip side, if you happen to buy a house that does have vinyl painted kitchen cabinets, you can scrape it off.

'Get a plastic scraper [such as Amazon's EHDIS 1.5" plastic scraper] and scrape the paint off. The bright side to all this is that since the paint does not stick well, it is not hard to get off. If some paint won't scrape off, just put some rubbing alcohol on the spot and rub it out with a rag,' advises Kelly.

If you end up having to purchase some for the first time, it won't go to waste, as there are many things you can safely clean with rubbing alcohol around the house.

2. Countertops

If your counters are a little tired and you're eyeing up counter ideas on Pinterest without the budget or time for a remodel, painting your counters may seem like a great fix. But our experts reckon you should step back and think again.

'One home upgrade I've never seen done well is a kitchen with repainted countertops,' says Jonathan Pallet, CEO at Clever Tiny Homes.

'While it is possible to get this look right, especially if you use an epoxy-based paint or clear coat over the top, you're going to immediately notice any imperfections in the surface. Heavy use is potentially going to wear away the finish over time, even if you use durable paint. If you want to redo your countertops, replacing them is almost always a better move.'

If you do want to have a go then Walmart's white epoxy undercoat would be a good start, it's good for using on MDF, plywood and other porous materials including countertops. A great alternative to painting is to use an adhesive peel and stick vinyl paper.

Head of Solved, Punteha van Terheyden has painted her kitchen counters before. She says, 'It looks so great initially but it quickly began flaking despite all the proper prep and application we took so much care over. I ended up sanding them down and wrapping them instead. That has lasted for two years so far, whereas the paint began chipping within 12 weeks.'

She recommends avoiding cheap materials if you are going to do either, and go for premium kits highly rated by shoppers.

3. The bath tub

Another temptation, especially when you see fabulous free-standing bathtub ideas – some of which might be painted – is to grab the brush and some paint and get to work.

In practice, it can be done, but it's not easy and with the bathroom being a high-humidity area, the results are unlikely to last.

Instead, you can buy tubs that are professionally painted and this is one instance where we'd recommend that service. You'll get a much more even finish and it will last.

If your tub is currently white and looks a little worse for wear, then you can touch up the chips with Amazon's Styleonme tub and tile touch up paint. It works on porcelain, fibreglass, enamel, acrylic and cast iron so if you have some chips or scratches it will do the trick.

4. Hardware

Hardware like handles, hooks, and drawer pulls, unless they are made from wood, are pretty much impossible to paint as the durable surfaces won't let paint stick for long, if at all.

If you do have wood ones, go for a good quality paint like Farrow & Ball's wood primer and undercoat.

However if you want to add a new look by upgrading your existing choices then it's better to buy new, or grab unique sets of door pulls from Etsy.

5. Shower tiles

According to Luke Siegal, CEO and founder of Raydoor, shower tiles is banned from his list of things to paint.

'Whenever a customer or family member asks for feedback on what what not to paint, I always advise against painting shower tiles. I feel it goes without saying, but constant moisture and steam will lead to peeling, bubbling, and mildew.'

Carr Lanphier, CEO of Improovy agrees, 'These are types of projects I do tend to discourage. It is possible to paint tiles in a way that looks good, even in a moisture-heavy environment like a shower. But, this is going to require sanding down any existing glaze or finish on the tile first, followed by an excellent tile-specific, waterproof primer and paint. Even so, I don’t tend to see painted shower tiles holding up very well in the long run.'

Our best recommendation, as advised by Carr is to use a really good tile-specific product such as the INSL-X SZA11009A-01 Stix acrylic waterborne bonding primer in white has the best ratings on Amazon. It has unparalleled adhesion to surfaces like glossy tiles, PVC, vinyl and glass, and provides a great base for a topcoat finish.

A better long-term bet will be to re-tile your wall. Punteha van Terheyden, Head of Solved, has tackled bathroom tiling before herself. She says, 'My cheat is to use a waterproof mosaic sheet tile, available from Amazon, and follow all the instructions. I tiled my bathroom upstands, and they have lasted five years, and look as good as the first day I installed them. The caulking was by far the hardest bit to get right, but having the right tools, such as a caulk smoothing kit and caulking gun, both from Lowe's, will help. Don't be afraid to give it a go.'

6. Hardwood floors

Whilst painted floor ideas can look amazing, be successfully executed with a lot of prep work, whether you should paint hardwood floors is another matter.

'Paint can disappoint on wood flooring,' explains Luke. 'It wears quickly and unevenly in high traffic zones, which will lead to chipping. Many times our customers will re-paint specific surfaces to match their new sliding door or walls, and whenever a customer suggests painting their floor, I highly advise against it.'

Instead of painting high sheen hardwood, give it a regular floor polish instead. Target's Orange Gloves 4-in-1 monthly hardwood floor polish with an orange scent is highly rated, and it protects against water damage, which is great for high-traffic areas.

You can also indulge in a few beautiful area rugs, such as the machine washable ones from Ruggable, to add the color you are craving and save yourself the hassle of fixing a painted floor.

7. Dishware

You may have had the pleasure of spending an afternoon in one of those art cafe's where you can spend hours painting plates, cups and bowls. These are later fired in a kiln or specialist oven at high temperatures by the store. That protective process sets and cures the paint, leaving it with a glossy and resistant surface.

Unfortunately, this is not a process you can easily replicate at home with dishware that you already own and regular paint, especially if you would like to continue to use it daily or put it in the dishwasher.

Instead, try an at-home plate painting ceramic kit from Amazon, which you bake in your oven. Afterwards, it will be dishwasher, microwave and food-safe.

Many factors sway our decision-making when choosing a color scheme for a room, not least the areas in which we live. Across the different regions of the US, trends differ, with color preferences said to be shaped by architectural styles, natural surroundings, and the climate.

From the light and airy hues of the West Coast to the classic shades of the Northeast, designers observe how their clients' color preferences differ across the country, and below, we've rounded up the main color trends.

It goes without saying that these regional color preferences aren't set in stone, and the colors homeowners use can vary vastly, no matter where they live. That said, these insights from designers align with certain paint brands' best-selling shades in different areas too, showing that our surroundings may have a greater impact on our room color ideas than we first thought.

Northeast

According to Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene, the Northeast region of the US welcomes decorating with neutrals, while more colorful hues take on a classic feel with the likes of blues and greens.

'Our Portland Stone family is the perfect neutral base for New England lighting and serves as a warmer take on the stark whites that are being replaced. When going for color, blues and greens are a big trend we're seeing – Obsidian Green, Pea Green, Jewel Beetle, Air Force Blue, and Hopper all see a lot of love in the region,' Ruth explains.

Allison Mattison, interior designer at New England Trellis Home Design, observes that the colors often reached for in this region reflect its heritage and architectire, adding: 'In the Northeast, there’s a strong appreciation for heritage and structure, which comes through in the color choices – think deep navy, forest green, oxblood, and crisp ivory. It’s a palette that feels tailored and timeless, often inspired by the region’s historic homes and urban brownstones.'

Connecticut and NYC-based interior designer Darci Hether, the founder of Darci Hether Interior Design, also picks up on the appeal for neutral rooms in the Northeast, which can be linked to inner-city living. 'With the hustle and bustle of the city and smaller footprints than that of our suburban clients, our city clients need an apartment that is calming and serene. They want soothing shades of cream, gray, slate blues with the occasional, well-placed 'pop' that helps express their personality,' says Darci.

'In coastal New England, and Nantucket in particular, there’s a strong affinity for soft, weathered tones that reflect the island’s natural palette – think driftwood grays, dune beiges, crisp whites, and classic Nantucket blues,' adds interior designer, Joe Waroquier. 'These colors echo the shingled architecture, seagrass-dotted landscapes, and misty Atlantic light that define the region.'

Midwest

Not dissimilar to the prominent color preferences within the Northeast region, experts say that the Midwest also tends to favor grounded palettes comprised of earthy neutrals and richer tones. 'In the Midwest, I’ve noticed a preference for cozy, grounded palettes like taupe, deep greens, and warm neutrals that suit the climate and architectural styles,' explains interior designer Laura Lubin of Nashville-based Ellerslie Interiors.

This is echoed by paint brand Behr, which highlights earthy green paints and burgundy reds as popular in the Midwest region. 'Colors like Muted Sage, Jojoba, North Woods, Vine Leaf, Cherry Cola, Dark Crimson, and mid-earth tones, blues, greens, and reds are popular as they complement common decorating and architectural styles such as Scandinavian, Prairie, and Craftsman,' says Erika Woelfel, color expert at Behr Paint Company. 'The Midwest, with its diverse landscapes from the Great Plains to the Great Lakes, also influences these color choices.'

West Coast

'On the West Coast, especially in California, we're seeing a more laid-back, sun-washed aesthetic,' observes designer Staver Gray of NYC design studio Ward + Gray, which works on projects across the US. 'Soft earth tones, warm terracottas, and faded coastal blues – colors that echo the landscape and blend effortlessly with indoor-outdoor living.'

Interior designer Caitlin Creer also notes a preference toward earthy colors on the West Coast, adding that she notices more popularity for 'muddy' hues here: 'I would say that my West Coast clients tend to gravitate toward more earthy and muddy colors in contrast to our Eastern projects. We do bring an earthiness into most of our projects, but some colors might feel out of place with the majority of our East Coast clients, who seem to like cleaner and crisper shades.'

The popularity of certain paint shades on the West Coast confirms an appeal for warm color schemes, according to Little Greene. 'In California, we're seeing an uptick in red-based hues like Rolling Fog Light, Mochi, Atomic Red, Bronze Red, China Clay Dark, and Castell Pink. These colors span bold and bright to calming neutrals, but they all have the same red undertone in them that makes it a clear trend for the West Coast,' Ruth Mottershead explains.

Southeast

'Head down to the Southeast, and the vibe softens,' says Allison Mattison. 'Here, homes lean into airy pastels, powdery blues, warm whites, and soft greens that feel welcoming and graceful, perfect for the slower pace and hospitality-driven culture. There’s a fondness for tradition, but it’s filtered through a more relaxed, genteel lens.'

South Carolina-based designer Karen Germond, the founder of KMG Design Studio, comments on the appeal for decorating with blue in the Southeast region, adding: 'In the South, especially along the coast, blues continue to trend very strongly. It's a color that will always be timeless in the South. Clients continue to request this color be brought in to almost every project we do, either as an accent color or as the primary color, in lighter shades as well as darker shades.'

'The blues speak to the surrounding landscape of marshes and ocean as well as the clear blue skies that often accompany bright sunny days in the South. Blue also evokes a sense of stillness, lightness, and calm, and can feel instantly refreshing on a hot summer day,' Karen continues.

While coastal decor and a palette of blues are prominent in many parts of the Southeast, experts comment on much more vibrant color choices in Florida. 'Especially in the southern part of the state, we see bold, tropical hues – coral, turquoise, bright citrus, and lush greens – all paired with glossy whites and sleek finishes,' says Allison Mattison. 'It’s playful, vibrant, and not afraid to make a statement, reflecting the energy of the coastline and its global, resort-style influence.'

This is echoed by Joe Waroquier, who adds: 'When I work with clients in Miami, the preferences tend to be brighter, bolder, and more vibrant – often inspired by the tropical climate and lively cultural energy of the city. I see a lot of enthusiasm for saturated hues like coral, turquoise, palm green, and sunshine yellow. There's a desire to bring the outside in, celebrating color in a more playful and expressive way that feels very distinct from the muted, maritime palette of Nantucket.'

Southwest

'I’ve worked with clients across the US, but the strongest regional preferences I see today are in the Southwest,' shares the Dallas-based interior designer Lauren Saab of Saab Studios. 'Clients here gravitate toward sunbaked, grounded colors like terracotta and clay, such as Benjamin Moore’s Cinnamon Slate. Another example is sage green. These hues mirror the desert terrain and glow in golden afternoon light. They create interiors that feel rooted in the landscape, intuitive, warm, and unmistakably of their place.'

'In the South, clients embrace saturated hues such as French blue, warm peach, and olive green, often incorporating historical or vintage design elements,' adds Laura Lubin.

The top paint colors from Behr also show a favor for decorating with muted tones in the Southwest region, with the likes of Teton Blue, Jungle Camouflage, and Harvest Brown popular here.

From the classic colors and timeless neutrals that seem to be popular in the Northeast, to the more colorful and vibrant tones apparent in parts of the South, it's clear that designers observe regional preferences when it comes to decorating with color. That said, don't feel like your home needs to fully align with these observations – your home should be a reflection of the colors you love, no matter where you live.

When you think of versatile paint shades, it isn't a deep chocolate brown that typically springs to mind. At first glance, this deliciously indulgent shade might feel bold and brash, but it has become one of my favorite paint shades to use in my home.

Warming, grounding, and surprisingly adaptable, decorating with brown is, of course, nothing new. But it's certainly having a moment, and we're seeing a big return to rich, enveloping brown paints like chocolate, espresso, and tobacco.

Luxurious and rich yet traditional at the same time, Little Greene's Ganache took me totally by surprise. And then I returned to it again and again for almost every room in my home.

My love for chocolate brown naturally started in the kitchen. Then it slowly crept its way into my wardrobe, and some of the chicest pieces I've bought recently have been wrapped in this sweet cocoa shade. But no one was more surprised than I to find myself drawn to its enveloping tones for my home, too.

'Chocolate brown shades are perfect for creating smart spaces that bring indulgence, comfort, and warmth to the home,' says Ruther Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene. 'With their earthy tones, rich chocolate browns are a subtle nod to nature and work wonderfully with natural materials such as stone, wood, wicker, and rattan finishes.'

It shares the versatility of black but with a warm, welcoming undertone and inherently luxe feel. And what makes Ganache especially appealing is its softness. Unlike black, it doesn’t dominate; instead, it enhances whatever it’s paired with.

'Brown is a great tone to incorporate in your space. It's moody, it's cozy, and it looks good in both neutral rooms and colorful spaces,' said designer Taylor Simon in a recent TikTok video. 'It provides a deep, moody color without being too stark like black, while still providing great contrast against lighter walls,' she explained.

With a nod toward retro color schemes, it can feel delightfully nostalgic yet still sits just as lovely in contemporary spaces as it does amongst more traditional interior design styles.

As a long-term neutral lover, I've been slowly trying to lean into bolder colors in my current home. It is Edwardian with tall ceilings and full of character, so it can handle a little fun! I color drenched my living room in Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray (a misleading name, it hasn't a hint of gray within it) and then needed to find a complementary color for the fireplace.

After consulting with the experts – I even asked for Farrow & Ball's tips on decorating my blue living room – I learned that browny-red tones would work beautifully, and the winning swatch was unsurprisingly Ganache, seen above in my work-in-progress living room.

The next victim was my staircase. It's a big surface area, and the chosen color would be in your sightline immediately from the front door through to the dining room, living room, and all of upstairs. So it had to be perfect.

Leaning into the colors in my Victorian-style mosaic entryway floor – which as you can see above has tones of traditional brick red, butter yellow, brown, and black – I wanted to pick something that would feel contemporary, cool, but also work with a traditional palette. A hard brief.

I chose to pick out the brown in the tiles, giving the stairs a glossy, chocolatey wash of paint that somehow feels equal parts traditional (like a rich mahogany wood might) and stylish at the same time.

People often think of dark colors as dramatic or moody, but they can also be wonderfully grounding. If you balance them with lighter elements and tactile finishes, they bring real depth to a scheme, just like the nightstand in this neutral bedroom designed by Emma Ainsbough above.

'When used across all elements, they can really envelop a space, adding impact and drama to a space as well as partnering beautifully with neutral hues and natural finishes for a tonal contrast,' Ruth adds. 'Try color drenching Ganache in a scheme across walls, woodwork, and the ceiling for a truly impactful, cozy finish.'

In my case, Ganache has become the 'red thread' that tied everything together – from the living room to the hallway, to unexpected spaces like the cupboard in the corner of my kitchen and a bar cart in my dining room. It's now my go-to hue for making a space feel warm, layered, and with the right amount of contrast.

'You can definitely paint IKEA furniture,' Carr assures. 'I've seen this done quite a bit as a DIY refresh on an older, or even a new, piece.'

It's a great way to make furniture look more expensive, achieve an antique finish with paint, and even spruce up your outdoor IKEA items by painting garden furniture.

Mike Fretto, furniture expert and creative director at Neighbor, adds, 'Yes, you can paint most IKEA furniture. In fact, it’s pretty popular for people to do this so that they can customize their pieces and make them appear less cookie-cutter.'

But, as Carr highlights, there are some significant, and very important, mistakes to avoid when painting wooden furniture.

How to paint IKEA furniture

As with any DIY project, preparation is key if you're planning on painting your IKEA furniture. 'I’ve seen some of these DIY jobs fall apart pretty quickly due to failing to prepare the piece correctly,' warns Carr.

This, as Mike advises, includes disassembling the furniture, usually made easy by the flatpack nature of IKEA pieces, and cleaning it thoroughly.

A microfiber cloth and all-purpose spray, such as the Seventh Generation Multi Surface Cleaning Spray available at Walmart, or warm soapy water, will usually do the job. For particularly tough stains and marks, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, available at Amazon, is ideal.

Next, says Carr, 'IKEA furniture is usually laminate, so it has that smooth finish paint won’t adhere to without priming.'

For this reason, if you're looking for a quick and easy affordable DIY weekend project, he recommends purchasing a primer specifically intended for use on laminate.

The Rust-Oleum ZINSSER Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer/Sealer available at Amazon, which bonds to all surfaces without the need for sanding, creates a mold and mildew resistant film, and is guaranteed to work with any paint.

This can be applied with a roller, included in the BETTER 6-Piece Paint Mini Roller Kit available at Walmart, or with a paint brush, such as the Double Thick Chip Paint Brush, available at Amazon.

'Apply the primer and allow it to dry completely before painting over it with your furniture paint of choice,' adds Carr. 'Otherwise, you can sand down laminate to remove that smooth finish and provide a rougher surface for your paint to adhere to.'

This can be done using simple sandpaper, such as the Sand Paper Variety Pack available at Amazon, which includes 12 different grit assortments, or with something a little more heavy-duty, like the bestselling HYCHIKA Detail Sander, also available at Amazon.

Mike adds, 'I would also recommend applying a sealant at the end to really lock the paint in place.'

In this green kitchen, the cabinets were painted in Neptune's Sage, a calming shade of green that works as a more interesting alternative to neutral tones.

'Soft shades like Sage bring a gentle, tranquil feel, while richer, earthy tones such as Burnham Red or Burnt Sienna add warmth and depth without overwhelming the room,' explains Neptune's Fred Horlock. Rather than using just one singular shade throughout a kitchen, color drenching can be just as effective by layering varying shades within the same color family.

Here, Farrow & Ball's Fake Tan is used on the kitchen walls, creating the base for the warm color scheme. While the lower oak cabinets aren't painted, the upper cabinets are painted in Neptune's Burnt Sienna, and the kitchen island is painted in Neptune's Burnham Red, creating a color-drenched scheme with added depth through the various red tones.

Continuing the theme of green paints, this kitchen designed by James Thomas features Benjamin Moore's Crisp Romaine in a gloss paint finish across the cabinets, creating a statement and playful look.

'We chose Crisp Romaine because we wanted to infuse the space with a color that, first, reinforced the garden theme we used in the dining room – with the treillage walls – and second, created a bold, color-drenched atmosphere,' explains Tom Riker, founder of the Chicago-based design studio.

'I have only seen color drenching in a Venetian plaster once, so I knew I wanted to take part in this idea,' says designer Elizabeth Bolognino. 'I found the idea of an inky blue profoundly handsome. It is especially intriguing because we typically do not equate dark colors with an indoor-outdoor space.'

'Prep is everything,' warns Anthony. 'If you rush, it'll look like a disaster.'

'Then you will prime the surface using either a latex primer or a dedicated masonry primer. I have found that using a high-quality acrylic or latex paint tends to adhere the best.

'You can also look for a specific fireplace paint that will give you that heat resistance you will need.'

1. Ignoring surface prep

'I do see this mistake pretty frequently, where an enterprising DIYer will paint their patio without preparing their surfaces, and end up with a patchy paint job that peels after just a few months.'

As an outdoor area, it's obvious that you can expect lots more dirt and general grime than indoors, so Carr recommends pressure washing your patio with a low setting to clean just about everything, including walls, decking, railings, and trim.

'Understanding the type of surface your patio is made of, or what was last applied to the surfaces, is critical,' he stresses. 'In general, wood decks typically require stains, whether oil-based or latex, whereas concrete patios can be either a porch enamel paint or concrete stain, depending on the previous coating and usage of the patio.

3. Applying paint too thickly

'Heavy coats can lead to drips, uneven drying, or cracking over time,' warns Anthony. 'Thin, even layers are much better.'

'In New England, I personally don't start patio projects for approximately a month after we begin exterior work, and stop them a month before we conclude exterior work.

In particular, while indoors, you may be looking for ways to make paint dry faster; the opposite can usually be said outside. Pick too sunny a day and your paint will dry unevenly. On the other hand, pick a wet day, and your paint will appear streaky and discolored. For the best results, opt for a warm yet cloudy day and prepare to be patient.

The best time to paint a house exterior is in the spring and fall, so bear this in mind before embarking on your patio project.

5. Not allowing proper curing time

Similarly, you must allow your new patio paint job to dry thoroughly before touching surfaces.

Paint expert Anthony warns, 'Walking on or placing furniture on the surface before it’s fully cured can damage the finish.'

As Anthony Kulikowski, owner at Five Star Painting of South Bend, a Neighborly company, explains, 'VOC paints contain volatile organic compounds, that release gases into the air, contributing to indoor air pollution and potential health issues, like headaches, nausea, and respiratory irritation,' evaporating into the air as the paint dries and sticking around for up to six months. Duncan MacKellar, technical and creative director of Armourcoat, adds that 'These are the fumes we often associate with the smell of fresh paint.'

On the flipside, non-VOC paints (including low and zero-VOC paints) have significantly lower levels, or zero measurements, of these compounds, making them a healthier choice for indoor environments, particularly when trying to improve the air quality in your home when living in a city.

'Today's low and no VOC paints are safe to use in the home in colder weather, and safe with HVAC systems as well,' adds Anthony.

Importantly, though, Carr Lanphier, CEO at Improovy, highlights that unless you're going with a zero VOC paint, even low-VOC paint will include some, with Duncan adding, 'Low, ultra-low and zero VOC paints are carefully formulated to minimize the emission of VOCs from the paint which means they are far safer for use within interior environments.

'Though, it is worth noting that some paints marketed as such can still release other noxious substances and pollutants into the air such as formaldehyde, which fall outside the boundaries of what is classed as a VOC, so it is important to always check the label details.'

So, how do you know what's best for you and your space?

Docia Boylen, owner at Handyman Connection of Golden, says, 'For many reasons, I recommend non-VOC paints and VOC-free paints, but I do 99% interior painting where I don’t need more durability or faster drying times,' which may be factors you consider when painting a house exterior. 'The non and zero VOC paints will also help remove any health and environmental concerns,' she adds.

Additionally, non-VOC paints are the way to go if you're 'all about health and keeping things eco-friendly,' says paint expert Anthony. 'They're great for allergy sufferers or those with sensitivities, and help keep allergic reactions or breathing issues at bay.'

When might VOC paints be the right option?

Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, VOC paints might be the best option for your project. For example, as paint expert Anthony explains, they may be useful in cases where you need something really durable, or when adhesion is an issue. That being said, they should always be used with good ventilation.

But, according to paint expert Duncan, 'there is little need nowadays to use high VOC paints, even for outdoor use.'

He explains, 'Historically paints were made using VOCs because they reduced drying time and helped create an effective protective film even when applied at lower temperatures, which was especially important for exterior paintwork.

'But, in recent years there have been significant advancements in polymer chemistry which means good quality paints can be formulated with significantly lower emissions.

'Paints which make use of these latest technologies can be more expensive, but if your budget allows it is worth spending the extra money to reduce the risk of negative health impacts resulting from VOC emissions within the home.

'Nowadays we are fully informed about the significant health risks of VOC emissions and the importance of excellent indoor air quality, so I would always strongly recommend using ultra-low or zero VOC paints for all interiors.'

As an extra consideration, Duncan also advises looking for ultra-low emissions coatings, which are now the 'gold standard' for indoor air quality, having gone through a stringent testing process to ensure they are totally safe for all interior use.

'These are typically tested to Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold certification standards, which certifies that a product fulfils low emissions requirements,' he adds.

Step 2. Prepare the surface

Next, Reger says, ‘Sand the tiles lightly with 220-grit sandpaper (such as the 3M Sandpaper available at Amazon) for better paint adhesion, and wipe away the dust.’

This will also roughly remove any existing paint that you may have on your types of tile, which will make it easier to paint over, and also make your new lick of paint ideas last better.

Step 3. Apply the primer

Once your surface has been sanded, use a tile-appropriate primer, such as the KILZ Adhesion Primer available at Amazon, recommends Reger, and let it dry for 24 hours.

To speed up drying time, you can open a window or use your best dehumidifier, but don’t do both at the same time, as your dehumidifier won’t work effectively with windows open.

Step 4. Paint the tiles

While unusually shaped rooms can bring character and charm, they can also be fairly trick to decorate. Features such as sloped ceilings or unusual shapes can sometimes make a room feel smaller than it is, but color can be used to visually open up the space.

'Unusually shaped rooms can either be celebrated for their uniqueness or subtly disguised by cleverly using paint,' says Anna Hill, brand director and color consultant at Fenwick & Tilbrook.

'If a room's shape feels awkward and you’d prefer not to highlight it, consider painting the entire space in one cohesive color, including the ceiling, especially if it's sloped – this is know as color drenching. This approach minimizes the visual impact of any irregularities, preventing the eye from being drawn to breaks in color.'

In the above scheme, the soft green paint is used on all the walls and ceilings to minimize the impact of the sloped ceiling and beams and make this child's bedroom feel larger and inviting.

A long, narrow living room

Rooms that are long and narrow are notoriously difficult to decorate, zone and furnish. The aim with these rooms is to prevent them feeling like a corridor and give a purpose to both ends of the space.

Emily Kantz, color marketing manager at Sherwin-Williams, suggests three very different ways to use paint in rectangular rooms to make them feel more square.

'A clever design choice for long, narrow rooms is to go for a two-tone approach, and try a deeper shade on the shorter walls and a lighter shade on the longer walls,' says Emily. 'This will create the illusion that the room seems more square shaped.'

'You could also use an overall off-white shade such as Sherwin Williams' Egret White SW 7570, which can make the room appear larger,' she says.

'Alternatively, go bold on all walls and incorporate a deep navy such as Naval SW 6244 or a dark green such as Pewter Green SW 6208. Darker colors make the walls recede also allowing the room to feel larger,' she adds.

Here, the darker black paint is used on the smallest wall, while the lighter bronze color is used on the longest wall. This, along with the reflective qualities of the high-gloss metallic bronze paint, work to visually enlargen the space and balance out the length of the walls.

An open-plan living space

In large, open plan spaces with multiple zones, such as kitchen diners or living rooms and playrooms, color can be used to visually divide up the two (or more) areas.

'In many open-plan spaces with a transition between different functional areas, a pop of color at the threshold - over the ceiling and down to the floor - can be a fun and effective way to visually separate the zones,' says Anna. 'This can work really well even when the scheme is neutral elsewhere.'

Making the divisions between the two functional zones clear is essential for preventing your space from feeling too large, chaotic and un-cozy.

'It is commonly thought that in smaller rooms it is best to opt for a neutral scheme, but often the results can be a little disappointing, and you can be left with a room that feels a bit dull and uninteresting,' says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene.

'Why not embrace a wonderful cocooning and rich color which will serve as a focal point, drawing visual attention and creating a sense of drama, as well as making a real design statement and create a space that will feel cozy and wonderfully enticing,' adds Ruth.

I've rounded up the most exciting colors set to dominate paint trends in September 2024, along with helpful advice and guidance from the experts in the know on how to use them in your home.

1. Sapphire

Used in decorating for centuries, serene sapphire blue is enduringly popular. Sapphire is also the birthstone for the month of September, making it the ideal choice for decorating with now.

With its wide appeal of serenity and calm, it is perhaps no surprise that sapphire blue continues to be one of the most popular choices for interior design. Sapphire contrasts beautifully with crisp whites, more softly with salmon pinks, and almost every shade of green. Ochre and earth-toned hues nestle happily alongside it, too, but it is the drama and tension that can be created between a balance of dark and light that can be quite so arresting when choosing a room color scheme.

The depth of pigment of sapphire means that it offers an emotional content that can be as nurturing or soothing as any green, particularly when you decorate a room floor-to-ceiling in a sapphire blue. 3. Chartreuse

There is something oh so cozy and comforting about chartreuse. Named chartreuse after its resemblance to the French herbal liqueur, the color chartreuse embodies a distinctive and energetic character that can beautifully uplift and brighten a room – the perfect antidote to the cooler, grayer weather.

The color also acts as an effective bridge between the outdoors and inside when used in threshold spaces. When seen in enclosed rooms on wallpapers or furnishings, the color brings relief and reassurance and elegantly reminds us of the living world beyond our four walls.

Chartreuse has enormous scope as a mindful décor mainstay, and is also seen as an effective backdrop for other organic shades. ‘We are noticing a change to the use of softer hues, such as chartreuse, being used all over as a base color, just how neutrals have been used traditionally,’ says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene. ‘These are very calming, positive shades with a timeless quality, that are muted but not enough that they fade into the background, so they work beautifully as a foil for similar earthy tones and richer colors, which can give a more dynamic effect.’

4. Ruby-red

Rich ruby-red and burgundy hues are perfect for adding mood-enhancing, intense color to a fall home. An intrinsic part of life's color palette, red evokes feelings of passion, drama, love, heat, festivity and fruitfulness.

As the leaves slowly start to turn red outside, it is a wonderful color to bring indoors too. This hue has the ability to grab attention, and evoke passion and sensuality – and has also been known to stimulate the production of melatonin and help with memory.

'Red makes people sit up and take notice and is a color that says you are self-reliant, optimistic and know what you want,' says Emma Deterding, founder of Kelling Designs and KDLoves. 'This effect is the same in interior design as it can bring in a rich, warm color that will pack a punch come September.'

5. Espresso

Sabrina Carpenter's song Espresso might have been considered the song of the summer, but it is the color that best embodies early fall to me.

Considered a dark neutral, espresso brown is grounding but also has an elegance that is truly sophisticated. Versatile, it can be striking on its own or allow other hues to stand proud.

'Espresso is a smart mix of black and brown,' explains interior designer Nadia Watts. 'Similar to black coffee, it exudes feelings of warmth, comfort and coziness.' All the emotions you want to embrace as the seasons change.

Being polychromatic, espresso goes with everything, but in deeper, very rich hues it is particularly good at flattering beautiful, well-drawn patterns, so don't be afraid to pattern and color clash in an espresso-hued space.

6. Eggplant

Purple is a controversial color. After a very violet bedroom as a teenager, I now have a love-hate relationship with the color. But if there is one hue that has persuaded me to give it another go, it's eggplant.

This strong, bold color is a much more grown-up and sophisticated version than the color schemes of the nineties and early noughties.

'Often associated with royalty and tradition, eggplant is perfect for adding drama and character to a room,' suggests Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore. 'Saturated shades envelop a room, so consider introducing the rich hue into a space that benefits from natural light to create an intriguing interplay of light and dark.'

If lilac was the color of summer, then eggplant is the color of fall.

7. Warm gray

Decorating with gray will forever be popular. This sultry shade goes with every color and can be used to add depth, dimension and sophistication to any room.

‘Gray is enormously versatile. Depending on the underlying tones within it and on the depth of color, it can be partnered with almost any other hue,’ says interior designer Victoria Wormsley of French-Brooks Interiors.

Treat gray as a neutral and layer it with darker and lighter tones, including plenty of texture and some accent pattern. It makes a cozy and wonderfully dramatic statement at the darker end of the grey spectrum and at its lightest, it offers schemes a sanctuary of calm. Consider pairing it with contrasting colors, too. Designer Vanessa Arbuthnott believes ‘many yellows, softer pinks, and warm blues’ work well as complementary colors.

Traditional paint removers and strippers are effective but filled with harmful chemicals, luckily, so our painting and decorating pros reveal 12 natural ways to remove paint.

We’ve spoken to paint and decorating experts to learn which natural methods work, so you can update your home without any harm, so you’ll know how to remove paint from metal, get paint off glass and strip paint from wood.

12 ways to remove paint naturally

1. Use a sandblaster rig

This might sound like an extreme piece of kit, but sandblaster rigs, such as the NANPU Sand Blaster available at Amazon, are easy to use - just make sure you wear goggles, or hire a professional if you have a large job to do.

‘One of the best things that will work from a natural, DIY paint remover standpoint is a sandblaster rig,’ says Brandon Walker, construction manager at ASAP Restoration LLC with over 20 years of experience in the paint industry. ‘These can be purchased for around the same entry price as any other power tool, and they will remove nearly any kind of paint from nearly any kind of surface naturally,’ making them a perfect choice for natural paint stripping, particularly getting paint off brick.

You can even get crushed walnut shells to sandblast with if you have grit preferences, and they’re biodegradable and eco-friendly, too.

2. Use olive or coconut oil

The list of uses for olive and coconut oil (such as the Naturally Refined Organic Coconut Oil from Walmart which is easily accessible in a large tub with lid to reseal) is seemingly endless, from health to home, and they’re also great at softening paint for removal.

‘Two effective and mild paint removers are olive oil or coconut oil,’ says Gurleen Kaur, owner of Gurleen Painting and Decorating. ‘Put the oil on the painted area for several hours, after which it is possible to scrape off the dried paint easily, as the presence of the oil loosens it.’

This is a tried and tested method when it comes to removing paint from wood, due to the porosity of the material.

3. Use a soy gel based remover

‘Soy gel paint removers are made of soybean, and work as an aggressive, eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemical strippers,’ says Chris Langley, interior decorator and visionary director of Patio Doors. ‘They break the bond between paint and surface, then easily wipe away.’

These soy-based paint strippers are also biodegradable, low in VOCs, and safe for interior applications, as well as being wonderfully effective.

We like the Blue Bear Soy Gel Paint & Urethane Stripper from Walmart as it can remove multiple layers of paint and other coats from multiple surface types.

4. Make a paste with baking soda

You might know that you can clean with baking soda, but did you know you can use it to strip paint?

‘This is one of the simplest and most effective methods,’ says Kaur. ‘Make a paste by combining water with baking soda and apply onto the painted region. You will need to leave the paste on for some time for it to soften out any existing paint, followed by scrubbing it off using a brush or abrasive pad.’

As baking soda is only slightly abrasive, it works well if you just want to get rid of small paint spots or touch up your furniture.

5. Mix masonry lime with concentrated lye

This one might seem a little more complicated and a little less natural, but don’t be fooled, it’s just as easy and eco-friendly.

‘If you’ve got woodwork hidden under layers of paint, it’s a fantastic old-school method that works wonders,’ says Jeremy Morgan, brand president at Groovy Hues. ‘You mix some masonry lime with concentrated lye, make it into a thick paste, and slather it over the woodwork or walls. After about four hours, you’ll start to see the paint loosening up. But, if you’re patient and let it go for around 12 hours, the paint comes off easily. The only downside is you might need a bit of clean up, like some light sanding.’

While this method is slightly more effort, Morgan assures that the results are ‘totally worth it.’

6. Use vinegar

If you know that you can clean with vinegar, you might be surprised to hear that you can use it to strip paint too.

‘Soak a cloth or sponge in warm white vinegar and apply it gently to the coat of the paint,’ recommends Kaur. ‘After waiting for ten minutes or so, use a brush or knife to scrape it off. Vinegar loosens up paints on wood or metal surfaces,’ so it’s most recommended to use on furniture, not walls.

7. Use heat

This is a super handy trick to know, as the equipment, such as a heat gun or infrared heat lamp, can be purchased once and used time and time again, and can also be used to remove a wallpaper border. We like the bestselling Seekone Heat Gun from Amazon, as it's fast heating and comes with four different nozzles for stripping paint, crafts and shrinking PVC.

‘Infrared heat lamps and heating pads are another option to accelerate the paint stripping process,’ says Brayden Montgomery, home renovation and owner of Vantage Builders, who use sustainable practices and environmentally friendly materials. ‘Apply the heat to soften the paint before using a citrus-based stripper or scrubbing with baking soda. The heat will loosen the paint’s bond from the surface without damaging what’s underneath.

Just be careful using a heat gun without experience: Walker warns that you run the risk of reactivating VOC’s, or volatile organic compounds, within the paint layers.

8. Use citrus

‘There are also citrus types of removers that contain d-limonene derived from citrus peels, which are commonly used today and have a lemon-like scent,’ says Kaur. ‘The citrus-based remover (such as the CitriStrip Paint Varnish Stripping Gel from Walmart) should be applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.’

Alternatively, you can rub fresh citrus peels against any paint, recommends Kaur. ‘Citrus oil helps dissolve paint, thus making its removal easier,’ he says.

9. Use non-caustic strippers

Bart Caldwell, the owner of Caldwell Painting, has been in the painting industry for 13 years, and remembers the days of caustic strippers and the damage they caused, starkly contrasting against natural removers.

He says, ‘For many years, we used aircraft remover as a paint stripper, as we couldn’t find anything better. However, it was so toxic it would burn through latex gloves and burn your skin if it came into contact. But, all the other safer, green products on the market just wouldn’t remove paint, or at least not in a usable manner.

‘We then found a product called SmartStrip (available at Walmart). It’s a non-caustic, low VOC paint stripper that works much better than aircraft remover. We use it to strip front doors, furniture, and interior and exterior trim- honestly anything and everything.’

Caldwell’s ‘little trick’ to make it work even better is to brush it on and then cover with thin plastic, leaving it to sit overnight. ‘The next day every single coat of paint will come off, including the primer,’ he says.

While there are two versions of this wonder product available, one with a red and one with a green label, Caldwell only uses the red if stripping lots of coats on industrial type applications. ‘Probably no need for the DIY’er,’ he says. ‘Just stick to the green label and you will be good to go.’

10. Use cornstarch

Cornstarch can also be used to remove paint from surfaces when mixed with water.

‘Make a paste-like density and smear it over the painted areas,’ says Kaur. ‘Let the solution dry completely before scraping it off again. When drying, cornstarch raises the painted surface making it easier to remove.’

Cornstarch has multiple uses including in cooking for thickening stews and soups, and is available at most stores such as Target or you can order online from Amazon for quick delivery.

11. Use rubbing alcohol

‘I would consider rubbing alcohol to be eco-friendly, and it’s much less harmful than your typical paint stripper, since it’s safe on skin and won’t cause harm if you’re breathing it in, although I would recommend using it in a ventilated space,’ says Matt Balducci, co-owner and CEO of HomeHero Roofing. ‘Combine this with a more manual method of paint removal like a paint scraper, since rubbing alcohol will mostly remove the finish or sealant and loosen the paint up to allow you to remove it.’

12. Use soap and water

Finally, trusty soap and water can be used for natural paint removal.

‘Surprisingly, soap and water also work effectively in removing water-based paints,’ says Kaur. ‘The wet painting can be scrubbed using a brush or cloth soaked in soapy water. This method works best for newly applied or partially dried light painting.’

It’s one of the simplest and most common methods available, but it can work wonders in the right circumstances.

What dissolves paint easily?

It’s not natural, but it’s easy and effective: acetone. It’s commonly found in nail polish remover, but can also be used to thin paint and lacquer, or as a paint stripper to clean up after projects.

Just be careful not to breathe any in – we recommend wearing a mask and keeping the area well ventilated. If you’re dissolving paint off furniture, consider taking it outdoors before starting.

What does sponge painting bring to a room?

Sponge painting or 'faux painting' a room has many plus points including its versatility, ease and visual impact, and it's a timeless technique favored among designers.

“Faux painting is something that will never be off-trend," shares Francine Hsu Davis, Founder of France Hsu Designs.

“The sponge as a tool can bring unique patterns and textures to the home. You can use the sponge edge intentionally to build a repeat geometric modern pattern, or as a universal tool in more traditional faux finishes. The mottling ability of a sponge can help create the traditional texture of verdigris (an artistic effect).” 

What you'll need to sponge paint a room

Nick Lopez, founder of LIME Painting recommends the following tools to help you get the finish you want.

“A sponge, a five in one paint tool, a caulk gun, a paintbrush and a sprayer and or roller, depending on if you’re doing a spray method or just a brush and roll method.” 

The common option for most DIY painters is the brush and roll method. But if you’re a proficient paint sprayer don’t be afraid to spray a wall, just make sure to prep the area properly to stop over-spray getting where it shouldn’t. 

Step 1: Prepare the room

“Start by taking all of the fixtures and pictures off of the walls and pull the furniture four feet away from the walls,” shares Lopez. “Once all the furniture is centered, wrap and protect everything.”  

This will stop rogue paint splatter or accidents ruining your soft furnishings or other furniture.

Step 2: Prep the walls

The next step is to prep the walls you're intending to paint. Start by grabbing a paper towel or one of the best vacuums and removing any dust or debris.

Lopez suggests you then, “Caulk, patch and scrap.”

Start by scraping with a five-in-one paint tool (the Mister Rui putty tool is an Amazon bestseller and rated 4.7/5 on average by happy shoppers) to get rid of any loose paint or material. 

Next patch up any holes or dents to get a smooth finish. Don’t forget to sand down the wall when finished and vacuum to remove dust and debris.

Finally, caulk any gaps around windows, doors or baseboards. Solved editor and resident DIY enthusiast at Homes and Gardens, Punteha van Terheyden recommends using a painter's caulk if you intend to paint over it, or a waterproof, crackproof silicone for added protection around windows and doors such as the DAP Kwik Seal clear from Target, rated highly by shoppers and quick-drying for ease.

Step 3: Add base coat

“Once the walls are prepped, we will apply a base coat of a solid paint,” says Lopez. Choose your colors carefully and decide what color your base is going to be. A dark color on a light background will work differently to a light color on a dark background. 

Sponge painting techniques are commonly applied to walls, so your regular interior wall paint will be perfectly good for the job. The key to the finish will be what type of sheen you choose, and how much glaze you add. To avoid confusion, the glaze is another name for the prepped paint you'll apply before sponge painting a wall.

If you have a flat base color and you want to keep the tones/type of finish similar then use a flat top coat. If you want a contrast between the finishes use a higher sheen such as eggshell or even semi-gloss. A higher sheen will also be a good choice if the walls are going to see more traffic as they are more durable and easier to clean.

And, don’t forget a glaze is added to the paint so you won’t be getting a solid color on the top coat. 

Step 4: Create and apply glaze

Before applying the top coat of paint which you'll use your sponge on to create the desired look, you will need to create a glaze with your chosen wall paint color. 

Glaze is used when sponge painting a room to help slow down the drying process, allowing you to work with it longer. This is especially useful when working with quick drying paints. Adding a glaze will also make paint more transparent. 

The more you use, the lighter the color will be, but the longer it will take to dry, so you can work with it for longer. As a general guideline, use four parts glaze to one part paint. To test the color of the paint and glaze mix, dab a small patch onto an out of the way area and leave to dry or use a scrap piece of plain wallpaper. 

Step 5: Sponge paint

Now for the fun part. "You can use any type of sponge that your heart desires,” suggests Brandon Walker, Construction Manager at ASAP Restoration. “There are no good or bad sponges for this kind of painting and it really depends on what kind of pattern and texture you want the finished project to have.”

He notes some sponges hold more material and release it when squeezed and there are others that will create a texture similar to a normal roller, but in small dabs at a time.

Lopez suggests creating circular patterns with your sponge. He says your outcome will "depend on the size and amount of circles plus the depth of color in the glaze. You may want more of the undertone to bleed through, or more of the glaze to cover the base. The choice is yours.”

With so much choice, we recommend you try out different sponges, such as kitchen and bath sponges on an unused roll of wallpaper to help determine what texture and patterns you can get from each before applying to a wall, and figuring out which one you like.

“Color combinations that are having their moment in texture are tone-on-tone, or bold compliments,” says Hsu. “Subtle color play is also an option (think complimentary colors on the color wheel such as a gray purple over a terracotta).”

Whilst you can get inspiration from this year's color trends, Flora Hogg, Interior Designer and Colour Consultant at Craig & Rose is more specific, adding, "Try Craig & Rose's Pink Clay Chalk Wash on top of their Dried Plaster Chalky Emulsion Paint, it has the warmth of a freshly plaster wall many feel familiar and comforted by." 

Can you sponge paint with regular paint?

Yes, you can. Sponge painting techniques are commonly applied to walls, so your regular interior wall paint will be perfectly good for the job. The key to the finish will be what type of sheen you choose, and how much glaze you add. 

If you have a flat base color and you want to keep the tones and type of finish similar, then use a flat top coat. What does sponging on & sponging off mean?

There are a couple of techniques to create the sponge paint effect - sponge on and sponge off. Both create similar finishes but there are subtle differences. Typically, sponging off leaves more paint on the wall.

The sponging on method is the more common choice as it is easier to apply and take control of the finish. You apply the paint with a sponge over a dry base color. The sponging off method involves painting the wall and using a sponge to lift paint off the wall. With this method you get less time to work with the paint.

We recommend that you use the sponge on method to ensure you get the finish you want. Especially, if it's your first attempt at sponge/faux painting. 

Should I paint sponge/faux paint one wall or all walls?

This is very much a personal preference. Doing one wall will make the wall a feature wall, while doing four walls give you a unique set of patterns round the entire room.   
Lopez suggests that you, “Just do faux one wall and wallpaper on the other three, based on the trends currently.” He adds, “Right now, wallpaper is coming back and it’s more of a luxury application that is going to complement the faux."

With the right tools sorted you're ready to go. Here we guide you through all the steps you need to know to transform your wooden floor with a cool, contemporary look. 

1. Prepare the floor 

Start by emptying the room. A floor will need to be clear for at least a day or two, so store any furniture out of the way. Check there are no nails, staples or screws sticking up. If there are remove or hammer down so flush with the floor. If there are any loose boards, nail or screw down so they are secure. 

Check the floor for any gouges, screw or nail holes and fill with a decent wood filler like this Red Oak Hardwood Wood Filler from Amazon. Leave to dry and rub down the whole floor with an electric hand sander. If you have a large floor space to sand, consider hiring a floor sander to get the job done.  

2. Add a primer 

Before you add any paint make sure to vacuum and clean to ensure the floor is free from dust and grease. If you have sanded the floor and have bare wood the first coat should be a primer like this Zinsser High Hide Cover Stain Primer and Sealer from Amazon. This helps adhesion and will stop any stains spoiling the top coats.

Start painting from one corner and use a paintbrush to create a three-inch border around the edge of the room before using a 9-inch short pile roller on an extension pole to apply the primer to the entire floor. Remember to start in the corner furthest away from the door and work towards the door, so you don’t get stuck in the middle of the room with no way out until the paint dries.

3. Paint your base coat  

When the primer is dry (if using one) check the surface and give it a light rub down with a fine 240 grit sandpaper if needed. Now add the base coat - this will be the lightest of the two colors. 

Now follow the same process as the primer - start around the edges - and then work towards the door with a roller or paint pad. Leave to dry - again check the surface and see if it needs a sand - and add a second coat.  

4. Choose your pattern and mark out

There is a choice of two patterns: straight and diamond. If you have straight walls the straight pattern is a good choice. For less than straight walls, or you want something different try the diamond pattern. 

For ease of use, use a peel and stick tile to work out the pattern. To get an even pattern start in the middle of the room and measure in all directions to make sure there is an equal distance to the wall. Alternatively, start in one corner and work out across the floor. This will give you whole checkboards where you start, but might give half checkerboards at the opposite walls.

Once you have decided on your pattern and start point, lay down a peel and stick tile and draw around it with a pencil. Now use a long straight edge and mark out lines to the walls. Use the tile to help fill out the rest of the pattern.

Once the pattern is in place, get a good masking tape like this Scotch Painter's Tape from Walmart and place it on the outside of the lines where you are going to paint. Be warned, this may take a while and involve cutting to get neat lines.  

5. Add the top coat

Now it's time to add the darker color paint in the masked squares to get the classic checkerboard pattern. Start in the corner farthest from the door and use a 2-inch brush to add paint on the edges and then use a mini roller to complete each checkerboard.

Remove the tape paint before the paint dries completely. Do it in sections so you don’t have to keep going back over recently painted areas. 

If using a clear sealer, wait for the top coat to dry and apply across the whole of the floor in the same way that you added the base coat.

What is the best type of paint for wooden floors? 

Ideally you want to be using a durable, hard-wearing paint that is suitable for floors like this Rust-Oleum Home Interior Floor Coating Kit from Amazon. This includes a colored paint which is applied first, and a clear paint that you can put on top to protect the previous coat.

But you can use other paints that work on wood such as this Glidden Porch & Floor paint from Walmart. This is hard wearing, washable, waterproof and slip resistant. 

Dennis Fiorilli, Director of Product Excellence at Sherwin-Williams recommends Sherwin Williams Porch & Floor Enamel, “This coating is designed for high traffic areas and provides excellent block and dirt resistance. Alternatively, if you can’t find a color you want, you can use any wood paint covered with a clear sealer, but this may not last as long, so is better suited to low traffic areas.

What color combinations work well on checkerboard floors? 

The classic combination for checkerboard floors is black and white, with gray and white, and gray and black being alternative options. You don't have to stick to the classics, you can choose any colors you want, but the classics do work well with a host of color schemes. One tip I would suggest is to make sure that you use contrasting colors to display the full effect of the checkerboard design. 

How long do painted floors last? 

This isn’t a simple question to answer as it will depend on a host of factors as Fiorilli reveals, “How long a painted floor lasts will really depend on the amount of traffic the floor is exposed to.” It could be a year in high traffic areas like a hallway, while it could be five years in a bedroom. To prolong the life of a floor, Fiorilli recommends, “Doing proper prep  – clean, dull, dry – and choosing a quality floor coating will help extend the life of the coating.” 

How can you hide seams when painting plywood floors? 

Plywood sheeting is a popular choice for floors, but like any boards they often have a seam that can be seen when painted. But, hiding seams isn’t easy as Fiorilli explains, 'Hiding seams can be tough since the floors are likely to continue to expand and contract throughout the different seasons.  Any type of wood filler used is likely to crack and fall out over time.' He continues, 'I would suggest letting the plywood be as it is and use it as part of the design.'

But if exposed seams aren’t to your liking, you can use painters caulk/sealant to fill any gaps. This is flexible and paintable, but ideally should only be used on small gaps. And, dependent on floor movement and conditions it might need to be replaced every few years. 

The classic checkerboard pattern is an excellent small bathroom flooring idea and is an equally timeless choice for kitchen floors, too.

How to paint a ceiling like a pro

1. Grab the right tools

First of all, make sure you're equipped with all the essential tools so you can paint a ceiling in your home like a professional.

These will not only help achieve that brilliant final finish, but also make it easier and less messy to do:

'In addition to your paint, make sure your brush and roller sleeve are high quality and that your roller sleeve is the appropriate nap for your ceiling texture,' says Helen Shaw, of paint experts, Benjamin Moore.

2. Apply your painter's tape and remove vents

You may see satisfying videos of painting pros 'cutting in' with ease where the ceiling meets a wall or coving, but it's not as simple as it looks and comes with years of daily practice.

Remove any room for error when painting your ceiling by using suitable painter's tape. Paint expert Ed Edrosa from BEHR advises, 'Using your painter’s tape, begin by taping off the places where the ceiling and the wall meet.'

If you want to go one step further, you can even caulk your tape. Ed adds, 'To get a laser-straight line, use a special tape such as FrogTape, available at Amazon, and use a clear caulk to seal the edge of the tape.'

3. Prime and prep

Preparing a ceiling for painting is much like preparing walls for painting, and should not be skipped if you want the job to be done properly the first time.

Anthony Kulikowski, owner of Five Star Painting in South Bend, IN, a Neighborly company, advises, 'Skipping cleaning and patching the surface can lead to dust and debris speckling your paint and make for an uneven, messy finished look as a result.

'Ceilings can be dust magnets – just like walls and other surfaces. Dust the ceiling using a feather duster, microfiber cloth, or even a vacuum hose.'

Anthony continues, 'Check the ceiling for cracks. Patch up and sand down any holes that need to be filled in. If you see signs of discoloration or unusual stains, stop the project and investigate immediately for any water damage that needs proper attention.'

4. Start cutting in

Open the paint can, then get going. 'Start with painting the edge of the ceiling where it meets the wall,' suggests paint expert Helen.

'Cut the ceiling in like you would cut in a corner,' she says. 'Starting in the ceiling line, brush into the corner, then use the brush to cut in a nice straight line along the wall’s edge.'

Your painter's tape, and taking your time, will avoid any paint glooping across to a wall or surface you didn't intend. Using a smaller paint brush will help you keep better control in awkward areas.

5. Use a roller for the rest of the ceiling

Now it's time to switch from a brush to painting with a roller for the rest of the ceiling. As Ed explains, you should grab your roller and attach the extension pole before fully saturating your roller with paint.

'Start from the corner of the ceiling and start rolling nearest to a window, so that you can see the light from the window reflecting the wet paint,' says Helen. 'Then work your way across the room, rolling slowly when you’re near the wall to help avoid hitting it.'

'Each time you load your roller, start on an unpainted area and work back into a painted area. Paint the ceiling in one session, so the paint dries uniformly.

'Wait for the coat to dry to determine if a second coat is needed. Check the label instructions for dry times.'

If you do need to follow up with a second coat, Ed advises, 'Apply paint in a perpendicular direction.'

6. Remove the painter's tape

Remove the painter's tape while the paint is still wet. This will help avoid any chunks from coming up with the tape.

Then replace your vents, wash your tools, and stand back and admire your handiwork. Spare paint? You might want to keep some for touching up by loading some into a paint touch up pen, available on Amazon.

Ceiling painting mistakes to avoid

While learning how to paint a ceiling is easy enough for any keen DIYer, there are five crucial ceiling painting mistakes to avoid if you want your ceiling’s new dramatic impact to be because of the new color, not because of a truly dreadful paint job.

1. Leaving it until last

Many people question whether you should paint trim or walls first and forget about the ceiling altogether. But, says Zak Fleming, professional handyman and founder of Express-Handyman, this area should never be left until last, and doing so could end up causing damage to other fresh paint jobs.

'The ceiling should be painted first to prevent drips and spray splashing down onto walls and trim,’ he explains. ‘This allows for a cleaner and more efficient process when painting the rest of the room.’

Then, to prevent any splashes or damage to your flooring and having to get paint out of carpet, we recommend using a drop cloth, such as the CCS Canvas Drop Cloth for Painting available at Amazon.

As painting expert Anthony warns, 'Don’t assume that when you’re painting high up on the ceiling, anything below it won’t get paint droplets.

'Remove any light or valuable furniture from the room. Cover any heavy or remaining furniture with drop cloths, as well as the flooring. Also, be sure to tape or mask off fixtures and fans, which can also become a target for splatters. Everything below must be covered!'

Head of Solved, Punteha, recommends the heavy-duty plastic sheeting from Lowe's. She says, 'This will not tear easily as you move your tools or stepladder around the room, or annoyingly balloon up with the slightest moving of air.

'I made the mistake once of using light-duty sheets and will never use those again when painting my ceiling, or walls for that matter.'

Zak also notes that it's best to remove any light fixtures from your ceiling to protect them from paint splatters, advising that even if you think you won't notice them from the ground, you will.

When removing a light fitting, always make sure to turn the electricity supply off at the breaker first, not just at the switch, to prevent injury.

Helen Shaw from Benjamin Moore adds, 'If you cannot remove fixtures, use painter's tape [such as the bestselling Duck Brand Clean Release Painter's Tape available at Amazon] to protect them from spatter, or use your brush to cut around them carefully.'

2. Skimping on paint

Picking out high-quality paint finishes for your ceiling paint ideas is essential if you want the finished job to look professional and stand the test of time. After all, not all ceiling paints are created equal, Lisa McIntee, home stager at The Staging Professionals, reminds us.

‘It may be tempting to buy a pail of inexpensive ceiling paint to get multiple rooms complete,’ she begins, ‘but areas like kitchens and bathrooms do require some extra love. A peeling or cracking ceiling means that moisture has gotten in behind the paint, common in kitchens and bathrooms.

'To avoid this, purchase the proper ceiling paint for your space, apply the paint when the room is properly ventilated and dry, and allow for sufficient drying times between coats.’ This should prevent the need to fix peeling paint in the future.

Additionally, once you have picked out the perfect paint, make sure you have enough to cover the space. To calculate how much paint you need, keep in mind that, as a general rule of thumb, one gallon of paint is enough for a single coat coverage of around 350 to 400 square feet. There are factors that affect this, though, like your application method, surface, finish, and color. High-quality paint is often not budget-friendly, but avoid skimping on how much you use for the sake of making it last.

As Bart Caldwell, professional painter and founder of Caldwell Painting, warns, when you squeeze every drop out of the roller before reapplying paint, you will leave an uneven coverage. ‘It will give you that DIYer look,’ he claims. ‘Keep that roller wet and keep it professional.’

Prioritize buying the right painting tools, too, says painting expert Anthony. 'Using the wrong roller or brush can lead to visible roller marks or missed spots,' he advises. 'Use a roller with an extension pole to help maintain an even pressure for an event application.

'If you’re dealing with a popcorn ceiling, use a roller with a thicker nap (3/8" to 3/4") to properly cover the texture. For edges, use a 2-inch angular brush since it offers the best control and precision. If you're on the shorter side, a step ladder [such as the HBTower Step Ladder available at Amazon] can help you reach and apply paint more accurately.'

3. Picking the wrong finish

There are so many paint finishes for ceilings to pick from, including matte and gloss, so it can be hard to know which is best.

If you're struggling or stuck, home stager Lisa suggests that, while you may want to create a statement with your ceiling, using a glossy finish is not always the way to go.

‘Ceilings can be highly reflecting surfaces for both natural and artificial light,' she says. 'Therefore, choosing a paint with a glossy finish can draw the eyes up, detracting from the rest of the space and drawing attention to any imperfections.

‘Always stick with a commercially marketed ceiling paint as they typically have a low reflective matte finish. There is nothing worse than walking into a room with a glossy ceiling!’

If you would prefer to opt for a high gloss ceiling, ensure that the plastered surface is perfect, as high gloss finishes highlight every unsightly lump and bump.

4. Painting in the wrong direction

Unless you are looking to texture a ceiling, rolling in different directions, or rolling against the flow of natural light, can leave permanent marks.

‘Believe it or not, you need to roll your ceiling with the direction of your natural light source,’ advises Bart Caldwell, professional painter. ‘This is a little-known professional trick to help hide those pesky roller marks.’

Painting expert Anthony also adds that it's always best to work in small sections.

5. Not taking breaks

Any painting job, from painting a wall to painting an entire room, calls for regular breaks. But this is even more important when it comes to painting something as awkward as a ceiling, warns Erin Nutter, DIY mentor at The DIY Nuts, a home improvement blog.

No matter if your ceiling is large or small, it can be difficult to work at heights and angles for long periods of time, she says. ‘Give your neck and shoulders a break occasionally to avoid having a stiff neck the next day.’

Why does my ceiling look bad after painting?

There are a few reasons why your ceiling may be left looking patchy after painting. You may have used the wrong paint, applied too few coats, applied a second coat too soon, or used the incorrect equipment.

It may be because you rushed the job. Like painting a wall, painting ceilings require a lot, if not more, patience to complete properly.

Why do I have lines on my ceiling after painting?

If lines have dried into your ceiling after painting, it may be that you applied the paint unevenly or lapped wet paint over completely dry paint. This can happen if you are speeding through a painting task or apply a second coat too soon.
