As we near the end of January, we have a pretty good idea of the major color trends set to infiltrate interior spaces this year, and Pinterest has just confirmed that with its palette of trending colors for 2025.

Pinterest – which prides itself on being able to predict the major trends to come, including color trends – revealed its 2025 Pinterest Palette, comprising five need-to-know-about hues based on its in-depth trend reporting and data analysis.

As Homes & Gardens' Paint & Color Editor, I've rounded up each of the trending colors below, sharing my take on how they can be used in interior spaces. While most of the colors are bold, I think there's a liveable quality to them which makes for stylish room color ideas.

Cherry Red

It's no surprise to see 'Cherry Red' included in Pinterest's color palette for 2025. When it comes to decorating with red in the home, this bold hue has acted as a major color trend, not least since the emergence of the unexpected red theory early last year.

While some color trends appear to be short-lived, bold shades of red seem to be going nowhere. Over the past months, I've seen so many designers incorporating this daring hue into interior projects, whether across kitchen cabinets in the heart of the home or through bright red furniture or smaller decor for a hit of color – proving it can be a liveable color.

If you want to make a statement with your color schemes in an on-trend way, look no further than cherry red. This rich, warming shade feels sophisticated and playful, and I am fully on board with it for 2025.

Butter Yellow

Of Pinterest's five color trends for 2025, 'Butter Yellow' is probably my favorite. To me, this mellow and pastel shade of yellow feels vintage-inspired, providing a grown-up way to inject more color into the home without leaning too garish or bold.

As seen here on these kitchen cabinets by deVOL Kitchens, butter yellow serves as an elevated neutral paint color but with more interest and warmth. And while we saw the emergence of this color trend in interiors last year, I'm excited to see Pinterest dub it a major player for the year ahead, where I can imagine it serving as a stylish kitchen color trend.

Aura Indigo

Purple – arguably one of the most divisive colors out there – comes as no surprise in Pinterest's predictions. This nostalgic hue dominated paint brands' Color of the Years, positioning it as a significant shade for 2025.

Personally speaking, I'm yet to be won over by purple room ideas, but it's great to see an uplifting, dopamine-decor-esque hue come to the fore with Pinterest's 'Auro Indigo'. Described by Pinterest as a lilac color 'with an edge', Auro Indigo is said to go hand in hand with 'otherworldly design' – a trend I'm intrigued to see unfold in the coming months.

If you're feeling inspired by this bold hue, I'd recommend exploring the best lavender paints that range from bright and bold to muted and subdued.

Dill Green

Green is one of the most timeless colors, but the specific shades of green dubbed the most trendy are constantly evolving. For Pinterest, 'Dill Green' is the need-to-know about variation for 2025 – a saturated and warming shade much like Little Greene's Hopper which was used on the walls in this living room.

I'm a big fan of decorating with green, and I think shades akin to Pinterest's Dill Green are one of the best ways to bring warmth and depth into that home, without feeling too dark or moody. Colors like this one make an excellent choice in small rooms when color-drenched for a cohesive, wrap-around feel.

Alpine Oat

Although Pinterest's 'Alpine Oat' doesn't fall into the bold camp, it's an equally important color trend for 2025. Described by Pinterest as a 'new neutral', we're seeing endless appeal right now for subtly warm white paints and oaty tones that feel reminiscent of Alpine Oat, and they're such a refreshing step away from harsh, cool-toned whites.

While this is said to be a trend, I fully expect warm whites and delicate neutrals to endure for many years to come in the interior design realm, used as a backdrop color in many rooms, from bedrooms to kitchens.

Once a year, we get a glimpse into the future here at H&G when Pinterest unveils its Pinterest Predicts trend report, giving us an insight into all the trends we're going to be coveting in the following year.

And according to their crystal-ball-consulting experts, 2025 is shaping up to be a big and bold year. The trend-setting masterminds behind the platform have set the tone for what's on the cards for interior design trends, style, and home decor in the coming year.

From cherries to castles (yes, you read that right), these are the five most standout trends we're looking forward to seeing in our homes in 2025.

The Trends Pinterest Predicts Will Be Big News in 2025

Last year, Pinterest predicted some of our favorite and most viral trends from cafecore to kitschens, chrome to western, they truly had their sights set on some of the most playful aesthetics to take over 2024.

So when they sent us their annual report for 2025, we took note. Here's what they had to say.

1. Cherry Coded

The color story of 2025 is tipped to be cherry red. And we can't say we're surprised. Moving on from the unexpected red theory that blew up the internet this year, Pinterest suggests we're going to be seeing this tart shade in everything from our make-up, menus, and mood boards in 2025.

The cherry red color trend isn't anything new, in fact, our Paint & Color expert Emily reported on it earlier this year. According to Pinterest, this dark, sweet, and vibrant red is going to be a popular bedroom color trend next year with searches for 'cherry bedroom' up 100% already, while 'dark cherry red' gains an even bigger following with searches up 235%.

Unlike the deep, rich burgundies of recent seasons, you'll be seeing this more confident in high-gloss, lacquer finishes in playful touches like cabinetry paint and hardware, and smaller accessories like lighting and decor.

2. Surreal Soirees

Looking for some inspiration for your New Year's Eve hosting? According to Pinterest, it is time to let surrealism and a sense of playfulness take over your tablescaping.

Think 'curvy candlesticks, fantastical flowers, and gravity-defying centerpieces'. Searches are already on the rise for the 'Salvador Dali aesthetic' (up 40%) as well as 'dinner party tablescapes' which is rising by 55% alongside 'modern surrealism'.

We expect chrome to be even bigger news in table decor next year, moving away from softer gold hues into something with a more contemporary edge. This trend is all about creating moments of surprise and delight with your hosting to wow your guests.

3. Castlecore

We've heard terms like Whimsigoth (a cozier take on gothic) floating around this year, with the rise in gothic interior design coming to the foray but 'castlecore' pushes that narrative a little further.

Inspired by the grandeur of medieval castles and old-world charm, this aesthetic blends dramatic finishes and historical references to create interiors that feel both regal and slightly moody. Think wrought iron lighting, tapestries, carved furniture, chainmail-inspired decor, and luxurious fabrics like velvet and brocade.

'Medievalcore' will be another big term (searches are already up 110% on Pinterest) while early adopters are already getting ahead on their research and looking at 'castle house plans' on the platform too.

4. Primary Play

'In 2025, everyone will let their inner child shine,' notes the Pinterest trend report, alluding to the fact that next year is going to be a more playful one.

This will be seen in home design in fun touches and interior design tweakments like contrast-painted trims (up 85%), wall and door murals, and everything hand-painted. It is time to get your DIY on.

'This movement embraces a DIY ethos, encouraging people to repurpose and upcycle furniture, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary – which is at the heart of what we do,' explains Tom Revill, creative director of Plank Hardware who recommends upcycling old and second-hand pieces and giving them a playful fresh look. 'The approach marries sustainability with self-expression, making it ideal for both budget-conscious decorators and those looking for unique pieces.'

5. Mix and Maximalist

Maximalist decor has been a big trend for a while now, embracing eclectic homes that are brimming with a more-is-more personality.

Championing a blend of color, patterns, textures, and styles, unlike traditional maximalism, which can feel somewhat overwhelming, this trend is more curated chaos. The big aesthetics are 'eclectic maximalism' which has seen a rise in searches of 215% and 'vintage maximalism' at 260%.

Focus on layering unexpected elements in a harmonious way like clashing prints, eclectic furniture, and an old-meets-new mix of vintage and contemporary decor. It's more-is-more with a little bit of curation and restraint.

It seems as if 2025 is going to be quite the year of storytelling. Whether you’re drawn to the bold vibrancy of Cherry Coded, the whimsy of Surreal Soirees, the drama of Castlecore, the joy of Primary Play, or the curated chaos of Mix and Maximalism, these trends offer something for everyone. 6 Pinterest trend predictions we can't get enough of

2024 has been all about making your home feel more like you, and Pinterest's trending searches prove it. Neutral, pared-back spaces are timeless, and certainly aren't going anywhere. But this year's bringing out more design creativity (and fun) than ever.

'Gone are the days of bland and generic beige interiors. People are yearning for spaces that burst with color, comfort and character, reflecting their individual personalities and creating a welcoming sanctuary that feels uniquely their own,' reads the brand's trend report. 'This trend toward personalized, eclectic and inviting home decor is driven by a desire to create environments that evoke a sense of joy.'

1. Nancy Meyers

The Nancy Meyers aesthetic is a relatively new interiors trend on the scene, but it's based on a timeless design style that we're sure will stick around. Based on the nostalgic, welcoming set designs featured in the filmmaker's work, the aesthetic features warm color schemes, pared-back pattern and a bit of vintage charm. The Nancy Meyers-inspired trend fits perfectly with homeowners' top priorities, offering a timeless look and inviting design features.

Pinterest reports that searches for 'Nancy Meyers living room' have increased by 2,090% since this time last year, with searches for 'Nancy Meyers homes' trailing just behind at 2,055%. Bedrooms and kitchens channeling the look aren't far off either, garnering 1,505% and 620% increases respectively.

2. Whimsical decor

If you're done taking your home too seriously, this one's for you. Our home decor should always include a fair share of whimsy and fun, and Pinterest predicts that whimsical decor will remain at the top of users' lists.

This exciting, expressive style has a sense of humor, and relies on pairings of distinct, unexpected styles. With 'whimsical decor' up 4,690% since last year, and the long-lasting 'dopamine decor' trend up 280%, now's the time to create a space that boosts your mood and makes you happy. Bright colors, bold patterns, and mismatched styles are all fair game.

3. Dopamine decor

Dopamine decor is one of the longest-lasting trends on the list, and for good reason. The fun-forward, anti-boring look is all about what makes you (and only you) happy. A trend that, at its core, pushes back against the endless cycle of what's in, out, or back in again, dopamine decor can be whatever you'd like it to be.

As long as your home makes you feel good, you're right on track. Typically, bright colors and unique shapes make up the bulk of this style, with bold wallpaper and lush textures making tasteful appearances.

4. Color drenching

Searches for 'color drenching' are up 990% since this time last year, yet another indication that bold shades are here to stay. This painting technique is impactful and gives interiors a high-end, design-forward look that's hard to beat.

In this gorgeous home library, designed by Marie Flanigan Interiors, color drenching can be seen in full force. With a deep, maroon hue covering the walls, trim, windowpanes, and ceiling, this room is a statement of its own. Different finishes on different surfaces prevent color drenching from becoming too intense for everyday enjoyment. If you're after a dynamic, cocooning space, color drenching is a timeless, enduring technique to take on.

5. Eclectic decor

The eclectic interiors trend feels like a natural offshoot of the bookshelf wealth aesthetic (which skyrocketed in popularity earlier this year), as it embraces characterful, personality-driven, and collected approaches to interior design. Decorating with family heirlooms, exciting pattern, and generally unusual furniture and decor is the name of the eclectic interiors game.

This trend also goes hand in hand with a renewed love of all things vintage, and Pinterest reports that searches for 'vintage eclectic home' increased by 1,418% since this time last year. 'Pastel eclectic decor' was up 130% too, a nod to the recent love that vintage, pastel kitchens and bathrooms have received.

6. Vintage decor

Vintage furniture and decor has never, and will never, go out of style, but more and more designers and homeowners are turning to pre-loved items to spruce up their design schemes this year. With retro looks on the rise, and transitional style – a considered mix of vintage and contemporary elements – back in fashion, it's no surprise that searches are up for all things vintage.

Pinterest reports that searches for 'vintage plates on walls' are up 119% from last year, with 'vintage dinnerware' just ahead at 212%. 'Vintage Americana,' too, is up by 164% this year. What's more, 'grandma-core bedroom' has been searched for 2,605% more this year than last, indicating that people are looking for the lived-in, collected-over-time aesthetic that embraces vintage charm.

Vintage can be quite the bargain and adds characterful charm to any interior. Try mixing styles and time periods for a homey look that'll never date.

Interior design is not all about the trends, but these Pinterest picks are promising – they all rely on personality-driven design choices rather than fleeting fads. If spent devoting more attention to fun-forward design features and seeking out vintage charm, this summer will be one to remember.

So you've fallen in love the perfect shade of paint while scrolling Pinterest or watching a celebrity house tour? It's the exact color you envisioned painting your walls and you're confident it's a match for your interior decor, too? There's just one catch: you can't find any information on the shade or paint brand anywhere.

While it's easy enough to color-match paint already on walls, the task is complicated when you only have a picture or video to go by. Not only does it require you to put in some guesswork as to the type of paint finish, it also means cross-referencing popular brands to try and spot the right match.

But what if it was possible to make this task easier? We asked professional decorators and premium paint brands to share their tips bring your paint ideas to life from a photo or video alone. 

How to color match a paint shade from a photo

'It is actually incredibly difficult to accurately color match from a photo or video,' explains Price Latimer, Co-Founder and CCO of Alkemis Paint. 'Theoretically everyone’s mobile phone screen or computer monitor is calibrated uniquely or set to a different brightness level.'

'Photos come really close to getting accurate color temperatures, but never quite 100% there,' adds Brandon Walker from ASAP Restoration. 'Close enough for some people will be totally off to others. For colors that have a lot of variables in the mix, this can mean even a fraction of a drop of pigment can completely change the final color ratio.'

But don't give up hope yet – there are a few solutions you can try to match a paint shade as closely as possible from your favorite reference photo...  

1. Extend Your Research

Before you commit to any of the color-matching hacks below, you may want to put a little bit more effort into your online research. If you're convinced that the paint color on a photo or video is the ideal shade for your home, try to find out who the interior designer responsible for the project was and politely reach out to them. Many designers will be happy to share these smaller details of a project and may even have this information listed on their portfolio website. 

Similarly, if you're confident you know the paint brand but not the specific shade, reach out to a brand representative and ask them for their expert opinion. Even if the shade has been discontinued or they aren't 100% certain of the match, they'll likely be able to find a similar color for you or provide you with samples of the most likely candidates. 

2. Gather visual references

If reaching out to the designer or specific paint brands fails to yield results, move on to the second research phase: gathering visual references.

'Attempt to gather as many images and videos as possible from the room that inspires you, and carefully examine the variations in tone and color,' recommends Flora Hogg, in-house interior designer and color consultant at Craig & Rose. 'It’s good to keep in mind that many photographs are edited and recolored to establish a certain tone and atmosphere. Therefore, selecting a color that aligns with the desired mood will likely be more straightforward than striving for exact paint color accuracy.'

3. Color match in store

Many big-box stores and paint brands are now able to offer color matching services, explains Brandon Walker. 'You can take an image to a professional paint supplier like Sherwin Williams and have them run it through a mass spectrometer to analyze the color from a light wavelength standpoint and get truly accurate results.' 

'From a photo alone, it's possible to get very close, but you will likely never get a spot on match,' he continues. 'This is because the phone’s camera, and color recognition software is not the same as the color itself. There are a lot of factors that can alter this appearance, from dust to the ambient room lighting, and these affects will alter the recorded color enough to not be an exact match.'

'Textural and finish differences between the space photographed and your own also changes visual perception,' adds Artem Kropovinsky, Founder of the design studio, Arsight. That being said, spectrometer results are extremely close most of the time, and armed with these results you should be able to find ample samples and swatches to take home.

If you aren't able to have your image analyzed by a mass spectrometer, I would use the photo or video to find similar shades from paint swatches in a well-lit store,' says Artem Kropovinsky. 'Hold the photo up to the swatches to narrow options, then buy small samples of the most promising colors to test in the intended space.'

4. Select and try paint samples

'I always recommend using your reference photos as the initial starting point and then testing out paint samples in your home,' says Flora Hogg from Craig & Rose. 'You'll be able to see whether it's similar to what you're trying to achieve, review whether it's too dark or light, and if the undertones are right, which will get you steps closer to your desired color.'

'We always suggest that customers order a sample swatch, or better yet an actual sample pot of the paint to test directly on the wall onsite,' agrees Price Latimer, from Alkemis Paint. 'Different underlying wall substrates (drywall, plaster, masonry, stucco, etc.) and different lighting conditions (natural, artificial, direct or indirect), as well as the type and temperature of the light bulbs (LED, incandescent or fluorescent) used in the space can all potentially affect the final appearance of the color.'

It's essential to learn how to use paint samples correctly to ensure you're happy with a shade before committing to painting a room in its entirety. You should also be mindful that even if you're confident you've tracked down the exact shade, unless your home is similar in location and style to your reference photo, it might not look right when its actually on your walls. 

'Trying to replicate an LA home in New Hampshire might not be suitable,' reminds Flora Hogg. If this is the case, having a variety of paint swatches and samples in similar hues and tones will help you find the perfect paint shade for your space.  

While it's hard to guarantee the perfect paint color match from a photo or a video alone, reaching out to paint brands and professional color consultants will help you gather enough paint samples to source an extremely close shade most of the time. 

Ultimately, your goal should be to source the best shade for your own unique space. So, even if you aren't sure you've nailed the match, all that truly matters is that you're happy with the end result. 

Look at any aesthetic kitchen pictures or videos online, and the fridge is always spotlessly organized with no half-opened packaging and loose produce in sight. 

While organizing a refrigerator may not seem like that exciting a task, establishing a functional and pretty system will help to encourage you to cook and will stop food from going bad hidden in the back corner. 

These are the seven stocking tips professional organizers use to make a fridge look better without sacrificing practicality.

How to make a fridge look better

Before restocking, declutter the fridge first and ensure that there is nothing expired hiding towards the back. With the fridge empty, take the time to clean the fridge (and make a note of how often to clean a fridge) and measure the shelves to pick out containers. Avoid shopping for storage before you know how much space you are working with, or your cold storage will look messier and less organized than it did before.  

1. Use containers to cut back on packaging

While there is usually not much wrong with the packaging that comes with your food from the grocery store, it is not always the prettiest or the most conducive to having a uniform fridge. Robyn Reynolds, owner and CEO of Organize2Harmonize suggests using uniform glass containers to decant food goods and keep them contained while also giving you the option to stack storage and fit more in:

'When using containers, try to avoid storing different categories together. For instance, don't put snacks in the same container with drinks.

‘To keep the fridge cleaner, you can always use liners for the drawers and containers, especially where you store fruits and vegetables.'

2. Divide the fridge into zones

Unlike organizing a pantry, breaking your fridge up into zones is a must to maintain good food hygiene. Raw meat and dairy should always be stored away from snacks and produce, for instance. Luckily, creating strict categories also has the added benefit of making your fridge look more uniform. 

‘Have all the condiments on the door with the salad dressings together, the sauces together,' suggests Robyn Reynolds. 'Keep the bottled drinks all together, as well the lunch-sized drinks together'. 

3. Stick to products you know you love

'When planning an aesthetic-looking fridge, it pays to take note of the products you buy over and over again so that you can work them into your organizing scheme,' says Darla DeMorrow, certified professional organizer and owner of HeartWork Organizing:

‘Repeating a shape over and over in the fridge makes it feel organized in the same way store shelves feel organized. For instance, we buy lunch meat that comes packaged in medium plastic containers with red lids. We save those containers, remove the labels, run them through the dishwasher, and re-use them for packaging leftovers and lunches. 

‘Some spaghetti jars have the shape and even the measurement markings of Mason jars. An added benefit of reusing packaging that comes with your food is that everything stacks beautifully in the fridge since the containers are all the same size.’

4. Stock in order of expiry

'Just because you want to make your fridge look better, doesn't mean you have to sacrifice practicality,' reminds Amy Trager, professional organizer. To keep your fridge easy to use and encourage you to cook, she recommends stocking the fridge from back to front, keeping things that will expire sooner at the front, and putting newer items at the back. 

This not only prevents food waste but also prevents you from having to rummage through and disturb your neatly organized produce. 

5. Pick pretty labels

Labels are a must when organizing a kitchen to help mark expiry dates and product information – especially when decanting. 

'While you can use some basic kitchen tape, it pays to have a pretty label maker to improve the aesthetics of your fridge,' says Robyn Reynolds, professional organizer.  

6. Group bottles by size

'Besides stocking your fridge by expiry and product type, organizing by size further enhances the aesthetics of your fridge while making it easier to reach everything without having to rummage through,' recommends Darla DeMorrow, certified professional organizer. 

‘I like to arrange the door shelves so the tall bottles sit with other tall bottles, and squatty jars group together. You’ll save space, and things will look more organized than they would with all the condiments jumbled.’

Even when prioritizing aesthetics, keep in mind which things you shouldn’t store in a refrigerator door to avoid accidents or food expiring prematurely.  

7. ‘Face’ products for that grocery store look

If you have ever been to the grocery store after they have just restocked, you will notice how neat the shelves look with all the products pushed to the front and turned so you can see the labels. ‘Fronting’ as it is referred to, is the easiest way to make your fridge look better while maintaining the practicality of your kitchen storage, says Darla DeMorrow, certified professional organizer.

Robyn Reynolds, a professional organizer urges you to exercise caution and still only buy the products you know you will consume so you do not contribute to unnecessary food waste – not even the best refrigerators can keep everything in top condition when you overshop.

While open plan living is still in fashion, Pinterest reports an emerging desire for separate spaces to sit down and dine in is blossoming. 'People have started looking for ways to bring to life a 'separate dining room' on Pinterest,' Matt Siberry, head of home at Pinterest told The Telegraph.

'Having a room dedicated to eating makes mealtimes special. Distractions such as the television or the clattering of pots and pans are no longer in your peripheral vision, and table conversation takes center stage instead.'

As Matt suggests, conventional 'formal dining rooms' are no longer the settings of this classic story. Instead, dedicated dinner-time setups are more appealing, relaxed, and comfortable spaces to enjoy each other's company with ease. Aaron's private dining room – with its luxe yet inviting aesthetic – showcases this perfectly. 

Another key to sucsess in Aaron's space comes in the shape of the Montana Moss Rock. The inclusion adds a soothing and tangible element sympathetic to the room's surrounding environment. 

'When choosing materials and the palette, we wanted to incorporate plaster with the Montana rock and reclaimed clad ceilings and walls to keep the spaces feeling a little more edited and a touch more refined,' says Jake Arnold via Instagram.

Each year, Pinterest reveals these influences through its annual trend forecast, predicting the leading interior design trends for the year ahead by analyzing the most popular search terms on the social platform. 

So what does this mean for 2024? We spoke to Sydney Stanback, Global Trends and Insights Lead at Pinterest, to learn about its five predicted home decor trends for next year. In 2024, it's all about channeling personality through home decor ideas, and embracing vibrant and unique spaces, marking a shift away from more reserved interior styles. 

'Our home trends this year are really moving away from traditional home aesthetics into a more expressive and bold space,' explains Sydney.

1. Kitschens

The first home decor trend revealed by Pinterest is all about channeling a 'kitsch' aesthetic in the kitchen. Embracing retro colors and playful design, kitchens in 2024 are predicted to be rooms full of character, as Sydney explains: 

'In 2024 we’re going to say goodbye to farmhouse kitchens, and hello to kitschy kitchens, or what we like to call kitschens. Next year, Gen X and Boomers, in particular, will elevate their kitchen designs and cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances, and eye-jarring pops of paint as they are looking for ‘eclectic kitchen decor’, ‘kitschy kitchens’, ‘retro pink kitchens’ and more.'

2. Hot metals

2024 will also see a move towards metals and decorating with silver in the home, creating a modern and industrial look. Pictured above, this trend can arguably most easily be created by opting for stainless steel kitchens. From the fridge to the countertops, you can incorporate as much or as little as you like of this sleek material.

'Specifically this year within the fashion space, we’re seeing a rise in cool silver tones,' says Sydney. 'We expect cool silver tones and bold chrome to continue to grow in 2024 and make a bold entry into the home category. Gen Z and Millennials on Pinterest are driving this heavy metal aesthetic while trading in neutral tones for this hardcore vibe.'

3. Cafecore

The rise of cafe culture will make its way into the home in the coming year, according to Pinterest, with homeowners dedicating parts of their kitchens to coffee bar essentials. 'In 2024 we see that Boomers and Gen X will bring the coffee shop vibe inside their homes with our ‘Cafecore’ trend,' says Sydney.

'This trend is so much more than just a coffee-maker or French press, people are trying to create a full cafe experience within their homes. They are looking for in-home cafe menus by searching for ‘cafe chalkboard’ ideas, and perfecting their coffee stations by searching for ‘coffee station decor’ to ‘coffee bar styling.’ Think of this as 2024’s version of the bar cart.'

4. Western Gothic

Nods to Western design will continue to be embraced in home decor in 2024 but with a revised twist with gothic influences. 'It’s a mix of the Western elements of vintage Americana with deep, moody hues,' explains Sydney. 'Expect to see Gen Z and Boomers DIY in style with sultry touches, such as dark fringe and even darker paint. Searches are trending up for ‘Western bedding ideas’, ‘country room ideas’, ‘western gothic’, and more.'

5. Aquatecture

Lastly, and perhaps the most adventurous decor trend of them all, Pinterest has predicted that 2024 will see popularity around aquarium designs in the home. 'In 2024, the focus will shift to aquatic animals with our trend “Aquatecture”, but please note that this trend goes well beyond your average fish tank.'

'Next year, Gen X and Millennials will become undersea gardeners through building and incorporating these over-the-top aquarium designs in their homes. They will go all in on ‘small aquarium designs’ and over-the-top ‘turtle terrariums’. With this trend, aquatic architecture will become a new and unique way to style a home.'

Sorting a closet by color is the perfect option if you want an aesthetically put-together wardrobe, and be able to find items quickly. But it can be trickier to keep organized than you might initially think.

I decided a few years back to give this form of closet organization a go after seeing all the pictures of Pinterest-perfect color categorization sweeping across my feed. However, keeping it pristine has not been an easy feat – especially when my closet started to gain more neutral pieces than bright colors.

However, with a few expert tips, I have managed to maintain a color-organized closet to keep the space pretty, functional, and easy to navigate. This is how.

How to maintain a color-organized closet  

If, like me, you thought that color-organized closet storage wouldn’t be too difficult to master (you are just putting green with green and blue with blue and so on, after all) then you may be shocked at how tricky it is to strike the balance between practical and pretty. Once I worked out a system, however, I found that it made putting an outfit together in the morning much quicker. 

1. Keep clothes grouped by type as well as color

My first big mistake when I started color organizing my clothes was grouping garments by color, and neglecting to group them by category. As a result, I would be flipping through my entire collection of black clothing before I could find the t-shirt I wanted.

I quickly learned that I should organize clothes in two ways, breaking down my collection into color groups, and then lining them up on the rail with all the pants together, then the skirts, then the tops, and so on. When setting the closet out for the first time, I tried to keep this category order for all of the colors to make the system more streamlined.  

2. Follow the rainbow to set up your categories

There are plenty of different ways you can set out your color coordinated closet, whether you move from light to dark or block your colors with no rhyme or reason, but I found that using the rainbow was the easiest way to sort my clothes storage ideas without having to think too hard about the order. 

I started with reds and worked my way through ROYGBIV, and, as a right-handed person, keep my blacks, whites, and neutrals at the right side of my closet as these were the pieces I reach for the most.

3. Break neutral colors down into tones

It is a common misconception that organizing a closet by color is only good for those of us that wear every color under the sun. As someone whose wardrobe has become largely based around browns, creams, beiges, and blacks with color used as an accent, I still found color-organizing useful.

I started with the obvious shades, grouping blacks and then browns together, working from dark to light, and then started to categorize beiges and creams, again working from dark to light and paying attention to the undertones. I put warm-toned neutrals together and then cooler tones together to help when assembling an outfit and putting tops and jackets together. 

This took me a while to get used to when I first started, but now I instantly recognize the undertones of any garment and know exactly where to put it back in my closet. 

4. Opt for neutral hangers to reduce visual clutter

I have worked with enough professional organizers to understand which closet organizers are best and which should be avoided. One item that is recommended repeatedly is a set of neutral velvet slimline hangers. I was skeptical about whether the investment was worth it at first, but the thin (yet sturdy) organizers are perfect for allowing the colors in your closet to sing without adding to any visual clutter. 

The hangers keep my clothes in place while disappearing into the background. Your clothes should be the focus of your closet after all – not the hangers.

Wooden clothes hangers could have the same effect for this, but are a little bulkier so may not work in small closets or if you are in need of some space-saving closet techniques.

5. Color coordinate shoes and accessories, too

Although I first started color organizing my closet for the aesthetics, I learned early on that it has to be functional and make it easier for me to put an outfit together to help maintain it. At first, I had neglected to color organize my shoes and accessories such as belts, scarves, and bags. As a result, finishing off an outfit was just as awkward as it was before I color-coded my clothing. 

Again, most of my shoes were neutrals, so I found that using a shoe rack and lining them up from light to dark worked best for me but someone with a larger, more colorful collection may be able to use shoe bins, such as these from The Container Store, to stack them in rainbow order.

Bins were also the perfect solution for my accessories. I don't have too many independent pieces – just a few staples I return to again and again, so I used a colored box and lumped all the different pieces of the same color together. I picked up a brown bin to keep my brown belts, scarves, and tote bags together and did the same with a black bin, and a cream bin. 

If you have more space or are able to commission bespoke joinery, then an accessories drawer could be great for this, allowing you to lay everything out in color order on display, or using clean bins to group colors and categories together – depending on the size of your collection.  

6. Keep formal and casual clothes separate

One organizing tip I implemented from the beginning was to keep my formal clothing and my casual clothing separate. I am far less likely to wear my formal dresses, so lumping them in with my everyday clothing just because they were the same color didn't make much sense. I had the luxury of two closets in which to organize everyday clothing in a rainbow and formal wear in color order in another, however, it is simple enough to split a single closet in two and have two groups of rainbow-colored clothing beside one another.  

7. Place patterns based on their dominant color, or between color categories

Home organization is always complicated by pieces that do not quite fit the mold. When it comes to color organizing a closet, multi-colored patterned pieces used to throw a spanner in my works. The simple way around it is to place the patterned piece based on its dominant color. A black dress with floral motifs goes with the black clothing, for instance.

Another approach I considered was to rearrange the color order so that clothing with two colors would sit between those two categories. A blue and green dress would then be on the boundary of the all-blue and all-green clothing. I think this is a good approach if you only have a few multi-colored pieces, or don't mind having a few slightly out of place.

Pinterest home trends forecast Hipstoric Homes (much like Jennifer Coolidge's) will come into play this 2023, and every generation will find 'find new ways to honor old stuff in their homes, combining vintage and heritage pieces with modern styles.' 

There has – according to photo powerhouse – been a year-on-year increase in the search for 'eclectic interior design vintage' (+850%), 'mixing modern and antique furniture' (+530%), and 'maximalist decor vintage' +350%  – but of course, Jennifer Coolidge is already ahead of this curve. 

Pinterest is not known as a trendsetter, but it is certainly one of the most accurate trend predictors on the internet. We've gone back through the past few years and can confirm that they get it right more often than not. For this reason, we are taking notice.

Here are seven of our favorite Pinterest home trends to look forward to in 2023, which we've broken down into H&G-forward tips to inspire you to create a home that nods to the future.

The trends Pinterest predicts will be big in 2023

As 2022 comes to a close, it is fair to say that a lot has changed. From the growing importance of sustainable materials to elegant elements and a celebration of individuality and uniqueness, the Pinterest home trend 2023 edit will provide you with a curated look at what we'll be inviting into our home. 

1. Welcome with a front porch that exudes curb appeal 

Designing a home with universal aesthetic appeal may seem like a tall order, but it shouldn't be an afterthought. While 2022 might have seen us wanting to spend time in our backyards, 2023 will see us smartening up the front yard too. 

Greet visitors, yourself, and your family with attractive front porch ideas that aren't a blot on your home’s landscape. 'Your chosen front door ideas and front yard walkway can say so much about the occupants: The entrance is the first encounter for you, your visitors, and the interiors that lie within, so getting it just right should be a priority,' says designer Monique Tollgard, founder, Tollgard Design. 

If you are in doubt about where to begin, Monique offers this advice: 'The front door colors we use allow us to introduce the "red thread" of the house immediately, so it is a good starting point. For us, the entrance is so important; it is the start of the story and first and last impressions are so important.'

2. Entice with orange elements

Vibrant and inviting, Pinterest predicts that deep orange will be making its way into our homes in 2023. Why will we be decorating with orange, you ask? Deep orange packs a punch and is full of optimism and hope. In fact, we have already spotted orange entering the design space. Sophisticated and versatile, the new burnt oranges gracing interiors are rich and radiant.

‘For me, the home should be filled with bright colors and bold patterns as they add personality to a space,' says Emma Deterding, founder, Kelling Designs. 'Orange shades are a great choice – they bring an uplifting feel during the day and can help create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere in the evening, showing how versatile this color is in a different light.’ 

If using orange as an all-over seems overwhelming, invest in accent and smaller additions instead. ‘Color will always look great when scaled and balanced correctly,' says Tess MacGeachy, interior designer, Amber Yard. 'Incorporate orange elements in the rug, the pattern on a chair, or on a piece of artwork'

Sarah Peake, the founder of Studio Peake, agrees: ‘Orange is perhaps not a color people think about when designing a scheme – which is a shame as it can really stand out from, but also complement, a more neutral background as we have above with this blue and grey palette.’ 

3. Prioritize wellness showers over baths 

No bathtub? That won't be a problem come 2023. Pinterest predicts that showering and spa-like showers, in particular, will be taking on a whole new level of importance, and they are not the only ones in agreement. 

‘In today’s fast-paced world, wellness and self-care have never been more important, says Graff CEO and president Ziggy Kulig. Whether you want to refresh or relax, a blissful shower can boost wellbeing and create a sense of everyday indulgence. 

‘Creating a wellness experience in the shower depends on the personal needs and rituals of each individual,’ says Holger Struck, spokesperson for Dornbracht. ‘For example, some people prefer a spacious showering area, open to the room, while others prefer a more enclosed, cozy space.’ An internal room without windows will rely on artful lighting for its soothing atmosphere, perhaps less essential in a shower area with a sense of calm provided by a view of a secluded, plant-filled garden.

If you want a shower that considers the senses; ‘Look for a showerhead that can provide a multisensory experience, as color, light, sound, and fragrance can all be used to boost the effect of water in soothing and invigorating the body,’ comments Ziggy. Some heads have built-in lighting and chromotherapy (color-changing lighting) options, built-in sound, and aromatherapy systems to enhance the experience.'

4. Seek comfort with organic and fluid designs 

While we're all for timeless, classic design, it's always fun to spot a new furniture trend. The new year is often a time when we start to think about updating our interiors and investing in new pieces of furniture. 

With the emphasis today on the home as a family space, used for socializing and relaxing as well as preparing food, regimented rows of units and clinical design can look a little stark, which is why Pinterest predicts that we will move away from ultra-modern interiors and onto more gentle, fluid shapes. 

Full-on voluptuous or gently rounded, curvaceous designs will lift the layout and soften the overall look of your room, adding a  bold design focus or a subtle touch of shaping to your home décor ideas.

5. Introduce simplicity outdoors with naturalistic and drought-tolerant planting

A new aesthetic of naturalistic and drought-tolerant planting compositions with a simplicity of design inspired by the surrounding landscape is emerging – creating backyard retreats that look and feel completely at home in their environment. With the challenges of climate change, there is an increasing need to select resilient plants suited to the soil, aspect, site, and climatic conditions, which will also increase biodiversity. 

This shift towards sustainability that doesn't forgo style or quality has seen more and more people consider dry and gravel garden ideas, too. A gravel garden is a practical and low-maintenance option to include in a sunny, weed-free and well-drained position. Allow some plants to self-seed among the gravel for a more natural look. Good plant choices are herbs, such as ribbons of lavender and thyme, euphorbia and nepeta. Hard landscaping is an integral part of the Mediterranean garden, broken up by splashes of vibrant color. Ideal for smaller spaces, a natural stone patio terrace is an eco-friendly alternative to brick and will last a lifetime.

The Pinterest report also suggested a rise in the use of rain chains (+35%), and rock garden ideas (+70%), with both boomers and Gen Z wanting to conserve more water. 

6. Let maximalist designs take center stage

Maximalism has long held a place in interior design, and its charming over-the-top whimsy and showstopping credentials will continue to enchant and inspire in 2023, according to Pinterest.

Maximalist decor as a design movement is very much in vogue. While maximalist interiors may often appear busy at first glance, a knowledgeable and experienced hand ensures the difference between a curated and cluttered room. So while 'more might be more', this current trend shouldn’t equal mess. 

'If in doubt, be bold,' advises Tiffany Duggan, founder and director of Studio Duggan. 'Clients hardly ever regret strong color choices but I am forever being asked how to rectify and inject personality into rather dull characterless spaces,' she says. 'I often use objects and furniture already in their possession to curate a room that is loved and cherish.'

7. Invite celebrations back into your life by creating a social space

Parties and joyous celebrations are making a welcome return for 2023. 

From layouts to lounge chairs, Pinterest expects us to create a place that's a haven for entertaining. To do so, make sure you include the right elements. Eating and drinking arrangements are at the top of the list, followed by practicalities such as heating, lighting, and seating. Then all you have to think about is styling up the different spaces you’ve created to add comfort and adding the finishing decorative touches for special occasions.

The easiest place to create a social space is within the kitchen, especially one with an island. A breakfast bar around an island will boost your kitchen’s social status immeasurably. Encourage guests to settle down, and stay out of the cook’s way, by selecting bar stools for comfort as well as looks.

Wild, naturalistic and sustainable are top themes for spring gardening, according to new Pinterest research putting ‘wild gardens’ high on garden wishlists.

Priarie-style planting, wildflower meadows and native plants are inspiring us to create more naturalistic gardens low on maintenance, and filled with attractive wildlife garden ideas. 

New research* into garden trends on the image-lead social media platform found 1,000 ‘wild garden' boards on Pinterest and 212,502 Pinterest pins. 'A clear trend for spring 2022 appears to be a move away from more obviously-designed spaces into more relaxed and naturalistic gardens,' says Shroopa Patel, category manager for OnBuy Garden Furniture Sets.

The wild garden trend will be showcased at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, May 24-28. Professional gardeners are bringing in wild plants such as nettles, cow parsley, poppies and nectar-rich buttercups.

Show organizers say hawthorn is going to feature prominently. This UK native species will join other woodland trees and shrubs such as hazel, crab apple, weeping willow and hornbeam.

How do you make a wildlife garden?

Scattering wild flower seeds in your backyard – pick up mixed packs for a couple of dollars or collect your own seeds from roadside plants – will give the random effect you’re looking for. You can even try making your own wildflower seed bomb.

Don’t overmulch the soil. Wild flowers thrive in tough conditions. And also think about what plants attract certain creatures. 'Growing specific species of wild plants and flowers can create a more conducive environment for growth,' says Tory Jon, CEO and owner of Pond Academy.

'You can go about this in plenty of ways, but introducing non-native established plants helps attract pollinating insects. Japanese maple, for example, is easy to grow and a good setting for wild bees. Common nettle also provides a good home for peacock butterfly caterpillars and small tortoiseshell butterflies.'

'If you're unsure where to start with a wild garden, plant a few wild plants and add plant and animal-friendly aspects to the garden,' says Aaditya Bhatta, editor and founder of Plantscraze. 

'These might include a pond to attract insects and amphibians. Add water plants such as water lilies and marsh marigolds. You should also add bird feeders, nesting boxes and animal shelters.'

After spending almost a year in lockdown, a desire to create a cocooning sanctuary at home has seen a surge in the popularity of black kitchens. Indeed, Pinterest has reported a 50% increase in searches for 'black kitchen cabinets'.

Senior Designer at British Standard by Plain English Adrian Bergman said: 'When compared with a desire for bolder colors early in 2020, the design team has certainly noticed an increase in demand for darker, moodier tones, not just on the cabinets but on the walls and work surfaces too.\

Of course, you can opt to mix your black kitchen cabinets with lighter counters, walls or backsplash tiles. But, if you are looking for a total eclipse of the kitchen, Adrian has a couple of tips: 'If you’re looking to achieve a monochromatic look, I would suggest using a gloss paint for the joinery to contrast a matte finish on the walls, this will add depth and tone to your scheme. 

'Pure black may feel a little heavy so be sure to explore the array of blacks out there, underlying tones of blue, purple or browns can help to soften the appearance.'

1. The sleek and chic black kitchen

The brief for this project was to create a family kitchen, which would be the heart of the home. Lanserring wanted to design a sleek, clean and understated kitchen with an injection of soul and a strong sense of craftsmanship.

The aim was to create dark, tonal symmetry with the cabinetry, backsplash and counters on the far back wall, enhanced with the almond gold touches. As avid cooks with a passion for entertaining, the clients intended to spend much of their time in this room.

The darker cabinetry contrasts with the light material of the kitchen island and the herringbone flooring, and the steel-framed double glass doors ensure that a lot of light reaches the full kitchen space.

Alex Beaugeard, Creative Director at Lanserring, says: 'Black kitchens work well because they create a sense of drama while being easy to live with. They can create interesting contrasts with lighting and look really glamorous at night.

'For an industrial look, combine a black kitchen with exposed brick and Crittall-style windows. Black cabinets work really well with light colored countertops and timber floors. Brass detailing in particular shines against darker tones. Generally, these types of kitchens feel very at home within a period architecture setting.'

2. The black kitchen island as focal point

This beautiful kitchen has injected a dramatic feel into the space with a stylish black kitchen island. 

Liberty Brooks, of Riley Brooks interior design studio, said: 'We used the color Coal Scuttle for the kitchen island with an earthy Belgian Fossil countertop which anchors the room. The island sits against the color Draughty Passage used on the rear wall units and Paint & Paper Library Salt 1 on the walls and ceiling to lift the space. 

'The mix of materials inject texture along with the unpainted elements bringing warmth to the space, aspects to consider when using bold, darker colors.'

3. The black kitchen that's a base for showy counters

'Black is our new love, we introduced it a couple of years ago and I think people were a bit scared, but it’s in full flow now!' says deVOL's Creative Director, Helen Parker.

'Think late night bars, speakeasies and restaurants in New York City for the look; big grand kitchen cupboards and especially big islands painted black, with some distressing and some brass for the foot rails or aged copper for the countertops – and certainly a splash of softly rounded Carrara marble, which just isn’t ever going to go out of fashion. 

'It’s the brass, copper accents and marble that really make these looks so fabulous and dramatic, but add a touch of blush pink to the walls and you instantly get a softer look whilst still keeping the drama.' 

4. The black kitchen designed for timeless appeal
