I’d flirted with the idea of a Ruggable for years – largely for the designer cachet, if I’m being honest. You're telling me that I can have a 6’ x 9’ living room anchor designed by Jonathan Adler, the Hiltons – even the late, great Iris Apfel – for $599? Tempting. And as a New Yorker, I’ll take any excuse to wage war on the layer of city grime that insists on making itself at home in my apartment.

Still, I never pulled the trigger. As a bit of a wool-or-nothing rug snob, I was dubious about polyester earning any inch of real estate on my charming pre-war floors. Besides, the task-averse Aquarius in me was deeply uninterested in the idea of a two-piece system.

So it was a no – that is, until Ruggable’s collaboration with the gloriously storied, deliciously maximal Scalamandré caught my attention – and, with it, the new All-in-One Rug System. Launched back in September, it’s a single, machine-washable piece with a built-in nonslip backing, meaning no layering, no separate cover to wrestle into place. That changed things.

I briefly entertained the ombré Tigre Gold (it is, after all, a 1960s Scalamandré signature) but ultimately landed on the Zebras Black & Natural. I placed the order.

As a longtime washable-rug skeptic, here’s what actually happened once it hit my floors.

First Impressions

When I spotted the box in my building’s package area, my first thought was: that’s it? I’d mentally prepared for a hulking roll – the sort of 'investment piece' that might require me to phone a friend for assistance. Instead, it arrived in a box not much larger than one of my standard online shopping hauls. It was light enough that I stacked two other packages on top and carried everything upstairs in one trip.

As someone who equates heft with quality, I wasn’t exactly thrilled.

My wool-or-nothing bias was flaring, but I persisted, rolled up my old harlequin diamond rug, and unfurled the moody parade of prancing Zebras (Scalamandré’s 1945 motif originally drawn for Gino’s of Capri). The swap took minutes, and as I had hoped, the look of my living room massively shifted.

With a pattern this offbeat, the visual impact wasn’t exactly shocking. What was unexpected, though, was the feel. For something so slim in profile, it felt unexpectedly plush – not shaggy, but softly cushioned in a way that read far more luxe than I’d anticipated. The only tell of its thinness, really, is that crumbs and lint don’t vanish into a forgiving wool pile. You see what’s there, which means I vacuum more often now.

Objectively, that’s not a flaw – just a different maintenance rhythm than I was used to.

Washing Experience

Washing is already a sore subject for me. I don’t have an in-unit washer. I don’t even have an in-building washer. The only fluff-and-fold I trust is three flights down and three blocks away, meaning anything that needs laundering becomes no small form of cardio.

Still, the rug’s lightness made this unremarkably easy. I folded it back down to roughly the size it arrived in, slid it into my usual laundry bag, and carried it over. I genuinely didn’t notice the weight.

At the counter, I handed the rug to my favorite laundry lady and said, ‘This is a rug.’ Then I recited the Tufted All-in-One care instructions: machine wash cold with mild, non-bleach detergent. No bleach. No fabric softener. Tumble dry low. Possibly twice – or even thrice at this size (Ruggable does say smaller sizes can air-dry flat, but mine required the full cycle.)

When I came back later that evening, I asked how it went. Easier than washing my bedding, she said. Duly noted.

I brought it home, sprawled it back across the floor, and it looked exactly the same. No warping. No curling. Just zebras, calmly continuing their parade.

How Did it Wear?

Not much to report here. Even with a steady stream of city shoes crossing it daily (plus one field trip to the cleaners), the surface looks unchanged. No fading from the sun or noticeable thinning of any kind.

Earlier, I mentioned vacuuming more often to keep this area rug clean. That’s still true. Ruggable advises against high suction or aggressive attachments if you want to preserve the softness, so I kept mine fairly gentle. I suspect that has a lot to do with why it still looks so impressively… the same.

And in this case, no news is very good news.

Final Thoughts

Before this rug, I was actively budgeting for a New Zealand hand-tufted wool rug that would’ve swallowed half a month’s paycheck. This Ruggable satisfied that craving – and then some. Not just because it looks good (though I, and every guest, have grown quite fond of those little leaping zebras), but because it’s proven itself borderline indestructible. Even after a minor match mishap (a lit one briefly hit the floor), the rug emerged entirely unscathed. Fire-resistant, apparently.

Would I buy another? Absolutely. I still have my eye on the Tigre Gold – perhaps for my stairs – but more importantly, this experience cured me of my washable-rug skepticism. If Ruggable’s All-in-One system can convert a wool-or-nothing snob like me, I suspect it might surprise you, too.

Think less of a filler or nice-to-have piece, and much more foundational. You want to choose your rug like you might a sofa, it's a big-ticket item after all. So to help you in finding the perfect, most stylish option, here are the seven top design styles the experts are loving for 2026.

1. Texture-Maxxing

Texture-maxxing is the natural evolution of our craving for warmth and tactility in 2026 – and rugs are leading the charge.

'In 2026, we’re seeing interiors become more warm and layered, the kinds of spaces rich with personality and a collected feel, and this trend extends to rugs too,' designer Kathy Kuo agrees. 'I’m anticipating an uptick in the use of richly textural rugs with thick braided weaves or cozy high piles.'

'Think hand-knotted wool rugs with chunky weaves, ultra-plush sheepskin rugs, and traditional Moroccan rugs that feel irresistibly soft underfoot,' she continues. 'These kinds of textiles can be styled in any area, although they work particularly well in relaxed, inviting spaces like bedrooms and family rooms.'

According to Lizzie Mosley, creative director at Hug Rug, 2026 will see designers 'embracing ways to maximize this by layering rugs with each other and over carpet, over hard floors, or to effectively zone open-plan spaces.' This layered approach adds visual interest while also softening larger or more minimal layouts, creating defined areas that feel comfortable rather than stark.

'One of my favorite moves is creating a full color moment by allowing the rug to echo the sofa or primary upholstered piece,' she continues. 'When the rug and seating live in the same tonal family, the room instantly feels elevated.'

Christina Cruz is also a fan of this 2026 rug trend, adding: 'Solid rugs are evolving too into rich, monochromatic palettes featuring subtle variations of tone woven throughout. These gently irregular forms are especially effective in open-plan spaces, where they help guide movement and create zones without hard lines, as well as in bedrooms where a sense of calm and flow is essential.'

'We’re seeing a strong return to hand-knotted, artisan rugs with subtle irregularities – pieces that feel collected rather than curated,' says Laura Lubin of Ellerslie Interiors. 'Softly faded palettes, earthy neutrals layered with unexpected undertones, and organic motifs are replacing high-contrast geometrics. Vintage and antique rugs, particularly those with wear and history, are prized because they bring warmth and authenticity – something no machine-made piece can replicate.'

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, vintage rugs also bring a layer of practicality and value. 'Vintage rugs add instant soul to any home and are often less expensive per square foot than their contemporary counterparts,' notes Bethany Adams.

'Besides being functional, they're works of art and conversation pieces that elevate any room,' Bethany continues. 'You can tell a good quality rug by flipping over the corner and counting how many knots there are per square inch. The higher the knot count, the higher the quality of the rug.'

'One-of-a-kind vintage rugs continue to top our list,' adds Christina Cruz. 'Their patina, soul, and sense of collected history create a magical element to a room. We’re seeing them move beyond the floor and into more unexpected placements, such as layered as stair runners, draped over benches, and even used as upholstered accents on furniture for added texture and narrative depth.'

5. Chocolate Brown

After years of pale neutrals and cool grays, this year we're welcoming a deeper, more indulgent palette – and chocolate brown is one of our favorite new hues. Rich, earthy, and quietly confident, this shade taps into our collective desire for interiors that feel grounding and comforting rather than light and airy.

'Earthy neutrals, which gained momentum in 2025, deepen further in 2026 as we see a move toward richer, more cocooning palettes,' explains Jodie Hatton, design manager at Brintons. 'From a design perspective, sumptuous shades of chocolate brown are set to play a defining role.'

'These tones sit naturally alongside the wellness-led colors gaining traction for 2026,' Jodie continues. 'Chocolate and caramel pair beautifully with restorative shades such as eucalyptus green, soft sage, and stormy blue – hues that help promote calmness and emotional balance in the home.'

'When combined with natural materials such as dark woods, organic textiles, and textured metallics like aged brass, the palette creates an inviting, cocooning environment that supports both comfort and wellbeing,' she adds.

While more of a styling trick than a design trend, layering rugs offers a creative way to add depth, warmth, and individuality to a room and is going to be a popular trick used by designers in the year ahead.

'Layering rugs will be a fun and considered touch in 2026,' says designer Sean Symington. 'Why not use a sisal base with a kilim or classic oriental on top to take us back to tradition, adding warmth, texture, and a sense of history to a room.'

But layering isn’t about following formulas; the idea is to throw rules out the door, says Alexis Vitale of the Vitale Design Group. 'Rugs are no longer purely proportional to furniture arrangement. They are tools of spatial definition,' she explains.

'We are seeing more sculptural rugs, layering rugs and materials, and runners that feel more like an art installation,' Alexis continues. 'Scale is really out the door. There are no more rules. It’s about intent.'

'We’re continually inspired by the quiet poetry of handmade craft, and folk rugs have a special way of connecting us to the natural world,' says India Holmes, creative director of Pelican House, who recently collaborated with style guru Lucy Williams on the rug seen above. 'Their handwoven nature reflects the rhythm of the maker’s hand and the imperfections that make them so human.'

These are rugs designed to be lived with and loved over time, rather than replaced with the next trend cycle.

'As an ancient craft, they carry an enchanting quality, each motif and symbol telling a story, a language that everyone can speak,' she continues. 'Folk-inspired textiles speak to a deeper sense of comfort and continuity. They are made to last, to be lived with, loved, and handed down.'

Have you ever noticed that once you find something new, it suddenly starts popping up everywhere? That's exactly what happened to me with this very specific, very bold piece of home decor that's taken over my Instagram feed: the Nordic Knots Folding Ribbon Rug.

Hannah Oravec, founder of Lawless Design, agrees. She says, 'I look for high-quality wool and knotted construction when sourcing Persian rugs. A hand-knotted rug will show the pattern on the backside of the rug. (We've had installers be confused on the direction before!) I also like the hand-dyed feel where there is some movement and character.'

5. Pattern

Plenty of Persian rug patterns are popular, namely Tabriz, known for its intricate patterns, Kashan, famous for its unique floral medallions, and the ever-popular Heriz for its geometric weave.

While some rug colors are going out of style in 2025, the enduring character of Persian patterns makes them an easy choice for any interior. Evelina advises, 'Let the carpet be the base (it can be neutral, but also bright like blue, green, or red). To make the carpet the focal point, the entire interior should be neutral rather than bright or vice versa. Since the carpet patterns are very active and numerous, I recommend that other surfaces be more minimalistic.'

Jen suggests opting for a more minimalist approach when incorporating a medallion rug in your scheme. 'Pairing a soft, vintage-style rug with clean architectural lines and natural materials – letting a classic pattern ground a contemporary space and bring a sense of balance and quiet contrast. '

A historic style that dates back to the fifteenth century, the Oushak rug is a traditional Turkish floor covering characterized by its large-scale floral and geometric pattern, muted colors, and plush pile.

Interior designer Adina Hall says, 'Oushak-inspired rugs will always stand the test of time. They’re known for their large, stylized motifs, muted and warm color palettes, and soft, luxurious feel. Each is hand-knotted from high-quality wool, reflecting Turkish artistry and geometric influences that blend beautifully with both traditional and contemporary interiors.'

I love using an Oushak to anchor a room with warmth and quiet depth. We recently sat down with the Los Angeles–based creative and founder of the Jungalow brand for our Layered Lives series to dive deep into her design philosophy around good vibes – spaces that feel alive, layered, and full of character and charm. Her signature mix of vibrant textiles, organic forms, and lush greenery has made her one of the most influential voices in modern bohemian style.

So when Justina offers a decorating tip, it’s worth paying attention. In this case, it’s about one of her favorite ways to transform a room: with rugs. It's a subject on which she is an expert, having designed rugs for brands such as Ruggable and Loloi.

‘Rugs add so much warmth to a space,’ Justina says. ‘And one of the things I love about them is being able to have more than one on the floor, but set at different rotations. This can totally change the feel of the space.’

Playing around with her Ruggable collection, Justina has a key rug placement rule that's somewhat unexpected. She explains how she likes to place one pointing away from the sofa and one at right angles to it, creating a sense of having a modern, irregular tapestry that is a lot like creating an art installation or gallery wall, but lying horizontally instead of hanging vertically.

‘I find this approach to be very grounding,’ Justina says. ‘Rugs are always something I take very seriously as they have an important effect on any room.’

She doesn't just pair or place any rugs, though. ‘My first launching point for choosing the right rugs is the color,’ Justina says. ‘And I want to find shades that contrast with what else is in the room. You know, floors can hold a lot of color, so you can afford to be brave and bright in this area. Even in more minimal rooms, where there is a lack of color elsewhere, you can throw in a more punchy rug and all of a sudden you have an explosion of decor.’

So take this as your permission to be brave with layering rugs, to place them at right angles, and to use them to jolt even the most pared-back of palettes. It's the Justina Blakeney way.

There’s something irresistibly charming about them. Folk flatweaves are rooted in history and tradition, each one telling a story through the weave, color, and motifs. As India Holmes, creative director at Pelican House, who recently created a collaboration of folky weaves alongside tastemaker Lucy Williams named the Havens collection, explains, 'We’re continually inspired by the quiet poetry of handmade craft, and folk rugs have a special way of connecting us to the natural world.'

'Their handwoven nature reflects the rhythm of the maker’s hand and the imperfections that make them so human,' she continues. 'As an ancient craft, they carry an enchanting quality, each motif and symbol telling a story, a language that everyone can speak.'

Shoes on vs. shoes off is one of the biggest debates between households. For professional cleaners, however, there is only one option – shoes off at the door and not a moment later.

Sofia Martinez, cleaning expert and CEO of Sparkly Maid Austin, begins, ‘Wearing shoes indoors, even just to "grab something real quick," is one of the worst habits making your floors dirty.'

‘We have witnessed it time and time again – shoes bring in all kinds of invisible nastiness: bacteria, pollen, tiny rocks, oils from sidewalks. And once that grit gets ground into rug fibers, especially in high-pile rugs and woven styles, it will break down the rug fibers over time and with use. A simple shoe-free rule, or at least offering guests clean socks or slippers [available in packs of six at Amazon], can significantly help you.’

When taking off all shoes at the door, it is important to implement some rules for an organized entryway. Scott Schrader, cleaning expert at CottageCare, adds, ‘For daily housekeeping, I recommend a cordless vacuum with strong suction like a Shark Detect Pro, available at Amazon.’

3. Using the wrong rug for the wrong space

When choosing a rug, you need to think beyond the aesthetics and consider where it will live in your home. Neglecting to do so is a habit that makes your home harder to clean.

Taylor Riley, cleaning expert and partner at GermSmart Commercial Cleaning, explains, ‘For example, you don't want to use a high-pile or shag rug under the dinner table. In places like dining tables or entryways, use something low-pile or best of all, an indoor/outdoor option like polypropylene rugs, which are much easier to clean.’

4. Not using doormats

Jade Piper, cleaning expert and operations manager at BetterCleans, says, ‘Not putting an outdoor mat and only relying on indoor rugs or mats is a bad habit, making your indoor rugs dirtier, especially if you do opt to allow shoes indoors.

'The best doormats are supposed to act as the first line of defense, catching the worst of it before it hits your indoor floors. Without it, the indoor rug becomes the first and only place where that grime gets wiped off. I was a big fan of coir mats for a while since they’re stylish and pretty solid at catching mud and grit. But the problem is, once they get wet a few times, they start to get that weird, damp smell. They just don’t dry fast enough.

5. Skipping deep cleans

Deep cleaning a carpet is one of the most tedious spring cleaning tasks, but it is essential if you want to keep your home hygienic and extend the lifespan of your floor coverings. If you are guilty of neglecting it, it’s time to start looking for ways to break bad home habits for long-term tidiness.

Taylor urges, ‘Don't skip deep cleans. As mentioned, vacuuming alone often doesn't cut it. Dirt, oils, and allergens get embedded into the rug backing where the vacuum can't reach. I recommend a quarterly deep clean using a carpet extractor [such as the top-rated Bissell Little Green HydroSteam Portable Deep Cleaner from Best Buy] or hot water rinse.’

Don’t have the space for one of the best carpet cleaning machines? You can achieve similar results with the best steam cleaners and steam mops. They do not pull dirt from fibers, but steam cleaning carpet can sanitize and loosen debris, making it easier to vacuum out without taking up as much home storage or blowing your budget.

6. Using the wrong products

It is all well and good to refresh your rugs regularly, but using the wrong products is a bad habit, rendering your effort pointless.

Taylor continues, ‘Similarly, don’t use the wrong cleaning solution on delicate rugs. Harsh chemicals or high-pH cleaners can bleach or fade colors and break down fibers on delicate rugs. For treating spills/stains, I recommend Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover, available at Walmart. It's gentle but just as powerful as some of the commercial options.’ It can also help to make a rug smell nice.

You also want to avoid using too much product. Sofia adds, ‘It’s easy to panic when something spills, but dumping too much product can lead to soggy rug pads, moldy odors, or soap residue that actually attracts more dirt. Instead, blot gently with a clean cloth, use a small amount of a pH-neutral cleaner (or a mix of vinegar and water), and make sure it dries completely – fans, the best dehumidifiers, or open windows help speed that up.’

7. Letting indoor plants leak onto rugs

Jade says, ‘It might look fine on top, but try flipping them during a deep clean and you might notice stains, damp spots, or a musty smell. If you love having plants indoors, always, always use a proper drip tray [available in packs of eight at Target].

1. Remove all residue before starting

No matter the material of your flooring ideas, the first step to removing pumpkin stains from them is to always remove the bulk of the residue using a paper towel, or a soft sponge dampened with a bit of water.

Ryan Knoll, professional cleaner and founder of Tidy Casa begins, ‘Wipe away any residue with warm, soapy water (wringing the sponge out to avoid over saturating the flooring – especially on stone and real wood). Use a microfiber cloth or sponge to avoid scratching the floor, remember that some sponges have two sides. Always use the softer side to avoid scratches.’

We recommend using Dawn Dish Soap, from Walmart, as it is tough on stains but gentle on your floors. If you want to opt for a commercial floor cleaner, however, Ryan suggests, ‘Method’s Hard Floor Cleaner, at Walmart, which works well on most surfaces, as does Murphy’s Oil Soap.'

2. For tile and vinyl, opt for a vinegar cleaner

Cleaning tile floors and cleaning vinyl floors is easier than dealing with natural materials or carpets. These hardy floor covers can easily be cleaned with vinegar without the risk of damage.

Ryan Knoll continues, ‘For tougher stains on non-porous floors , a one-to-one vinegar-water mix can help dissolve any residual sugars or organic material. Just apply, wait a few minutes, and wipe clean.’

Though, Ryan advises avoid vinegar on stone surfaces as they are porous. He adds, ‘Most floors should be cleaned with PH-balanced neutral or non-acidic cleaners. So when cleaning with things like vinegar be conscious that this should really only be done on tile and never on wood floors. If you’re unsure if your floor is safe for more acidic cleaners, test in a small, inconspicuous area first.’

3. For natural stone, try baking soda

Natural stone floors are more likely to hold a stain than tile or vinyl, but vinegar can be too harsh. When cleaning natural stone floors, Ryan suggests cleaning with baking soda instead.

He explains, ‘If the stain doesn’t go away after some soap and water, get a thick paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the area. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes so the baking soda can do its thing. It will lift the stain naturally.’

When mixing baking soda and water together, there are no exact measurements. Simply add warm water to the baking soda bit by bit, mixing as you go until it reaches a spreadable consistency. The amount of baking soda you need will depend on the size of the area you need to clean.

4. Stick with a wood-safe cleaner for hardwood floors

Cleaning real wood floors is a delicate operation, especially when dealing with organic stains.

Ryan Knoll, says, ‘If the pumpkin leaves a mark on hardwood, use a pH-neutral wood cleaner instead of vinegar. Buff gently with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the finish.’

He recommends ‘Bona Natural Floor Cleaner (available on Amazon) as it is gentle enough for wood.’

Luckily, there are ways to clean a carpet without a machine, but it does require a little more elbow grease.

1. Remove residue with a paper towel

As with cleaning hard floors, Ken Doty, COO and cleaning expert at The Maids recommends, ‘Blotting as much of the stain as you can to start. Use a paper towel or a clean white cloth.’

Always make sure you dab at the stain, rather than rub. This encourages the stain to lift, rather than being rubbed further into the carpet.

2. Work quickly with dish soap

Carpet is one of the many surprising things you can clean with Dawn Powerwash, Ken Doty continues.

He recommends, ‘Mixing together a cleaning solution containing one tablespoon of dish soap and two cups of cold water. Apply the solution to the stain using a clean white cloth, and blot gently, working from the outside of the stain to the center to prevent spreading further out.’

3. Dab the soap away with a dry cloth and rinse

Ken concludes, ‘Finally, rinse the area with a small amount of water and once again blot with a clean, dry towel to dry.’

Opening windows and doors to increase ventilation will speed up the drying process, but you can also use the best dehumidifier to avoid musty smells and lingering damp spots.

4. Repeat as needed

If the stain persists, repeat the procedure again until it has completely lifted.

You can also try cleaning a carpet with baking soda to help lighten stains. Once you have removed most of the residue with a paper towel and soapy water, mix a paste of baking soda and warm water and spread it over the pumpkin mark. Allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes and up to overnight before scraping the paste away with a dull knife, and cleaning again with soapy water before drying.

Following these golden rules of stain removal will help make any flooring, no matter the material, shine brighter than before the holidays. However, as with any cleaning task, prevention is better than a cure.

Ken Doty, cleaning expert concludes, ‘To prevent this issue from occurring next Halloween, place your pumpkins on a waterproof tray or plastic sheet to catch any drips or rotted material. Check the pumpkins regularly, and consider switching to an LED candle as opposed to a real one to prevent accelerated rotting due to the heat.'

Luckily, the process for designing an outdoor living room is not dissimilar from designing the interiors of your home. Gray states: 'Just like inside your home, consider who will use the space, how it'll be used and how often as this will help to determine how much seating you'll need and how flexible the seating options will need to be. Be sure to take accurate measurements so you know how much space is available, after all, you want to make sure your furniture fits comfortable and doesn't look to big or small in the space. Once you've got the practicalities covered, it's then about choosing high-quality pieces that suit your needs and the look you're going for.'

She continues, 'From a style perspective, you also need to decide whether you want your outdoor living space to stand out from your home or complement it. For instance, if you live in a really modern decorated home, then opting for furniture with clean, minimalist lines might be a better option, whilst a traditional home may suit pieces that are shapelier and have a vintage or antique feel. We're seeing customers move away from the grey upholstery fabrics that have been popular for so long, and instead opting for warmer neutrals, soft greens and terracotta shades. These help to bring a warmer, relaxed and more inviting feel that can be brought to life with textiles and accessories.'

Josh Miller, CEO of Clean Carpets says, ‘I use a mixture of one cup white vinegar with a tablespoon each of baking soda and dish soap – preferably non-toxic and fragrance-free.

'Start by adding vinegar to warm water, then gradually mix in the baking soda and dish soap while avoiding excessive bubbling. Doing this in a measuring pitcher will make it easier to fill your carpet cleaning machine's reservoir with the solution, ensuring it is well-mixed.’

Josh continues, ‘Vinegar dissolves grime and odor efficiently because of its acidity, cleaning with baking soda lifts the stains and neutralizes odors, while dish soap breaks the surface tension so that it is easier to clean dirt and oils.

‘This alternative solution works because you are not using a laundry list of chemicals in commercial shampoos, such as sulfates or artificial fragrances. It also is more environmentally friendly and could be just as effective as commercial options without risking long-term chemical build-up in your carpet fibers.

‘It is always good to rinse your carpet afterward with simple water to remove any soap residue.’

It's important not to leave carpet soaking wet after cleaning it as the moisture can sink down into the layers beneath and lead to another headache – cleaning mold from carpets.

Alessandro Gazzo, cleaning expert at Emily’s Maids of Dallas agrees with this method, adding, ‘Commercial shampoos might be too abrasive and foamy sometimes because they’re formulated for deep cleaning where you will need to rinse many times to remove all the foam it generates.

'If you want a homemade solution, try using hot water and see how that works. Hot water is a powerful cleaner on its own, and you can add one cup of vinegar to your water reservoir when it’s time to rinse to sanitize and deodorize your floors as the last step.’

This homemade cleaning solution with vinegar is extraordinarily effective at getting rid of black mold.

If you have stains or strong odors on your carpet, you can try cleaning your carpet with baking soda before using a carpet cleaning machine.

Start by vacuuming with the best vacuum cleaner to remove debris, before sprinkling the affected area with an even layer of baking soda. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes and up to two hours before brushing away the access and vacuuming any last dust. This should help to eliminate odors before deep cleaning with a carpet cleaner.

A similar mixture can be used to help clean carpets without a machine, but a carpet cleaner is the best way to ensure all of the moisture is sucked out of the floor covering alongside the dirt, leaving your rugs and carpets cleaner than ever. Allowing moisture to sit for too long is a common rug cleaning mistake that can lead to musty odors or mold growth.

There are many reasons you might want to bring two rugs into one room. It's a great way to zone a larger space, subtly dividing a room it different areas. Or in a smaller room, layering rugs can make the space feel bigger as it can create the illusion of more floor space. It can also be an easy solve for covering an inherited not-so-lovely carpet.

But how do you pick two rugs that are going to work together in one space? Designer Shea Mcgee had to tackle this challenge in a large bedroom that included a seating area too, so would really benefit from some zoning. Her fail-safe formula is simple yet effective and a little unexpected too. Here's the wisdom she had to share.

'When you are pairing two rugs in a room there are a few things that I like to pay attention to. One is the color palette and also the patterns,' Shea shares. 'So here you can see that we've got this slate blue and gray on the stripe and then we get a similar blue and neutral tones on the rug to my right.'

So far, so easy – pick two rugs that have the same shades running throughout. But that's just one part of Shea's formula. What's so key to combining two rugs in one space is as well as cohesiveness, you want to add contrast. Contrast in interior design is what makes spaces interesting, what gives them personality.

Shea continues '[This pairing] totally works because the colors are speaking to each other and also the patterns are very different.' So this is where the contrast comes in. Pick rugs that clash in pattern and even have a different style to them.

As Shea explains, 'We've got an organic shape on one and a stripe on another. It would also work to have a solid over on this side.' You've still got that same color palette, so the two patterns aren't jarring but there's a very purposeful mismatching of prints. It adds a ton of shape and interest but doesn't overwhelm the room.

And the final part of the formula? Texture. 'The texture is also something to pay attention to,' adds Shea. 'I've got a tufted rug on one side, and a flat weave on the other. So it is all about a lot of contrast and then connection between the color palette.'

The rule can be applied to more than just rugs too. It works for bedding and sofascaping, if you want to create a gorgeous layered look that looks curated rather than chaotic. And the advice about bringing two patterns into one space also works for wallpapers and prints too. In fact, cohesive but then contrast is a formula that works across so many aspects of interior design.

1. Shake out loose debris

2. Vacuum the surface twice

‘To spot clean with small spots or spills, use a mild detergent mixed into water, then blot the stain gently with a clean cloth, sponge or towel. Be careful not to rub too harshly.’

4. Hand wash occasionally

If the rug is heavily soiled, then a thorough deep clean is still recommended, Daniel Brown, cleaning expert, continues:

‘Mix a bit of mild detergent or sheepskin shampoo with lukewarm water in the bathtub or a large basin. Put the rug in water and lightly run your hands over it; this will help loosen any dirt and grime.’ Try to keep the rug flat, much like hand-washing wool, to avoid the rug misshaping.

‘Drain the soapy water, and then refill the tub with clean water. Continue to rinse, slowly squeezing out excess water throughout the process.’

5. Always air dry flat

We strongly recommend air-drying laundry generally, but it is a must for sheepskin rugs, warns Josh Miller, cleaning expert and owner of Clean Carpets:

‘Drying a sheepskin rug is another sensitive process. Always put the rug on a flat surface over a clean towel in a well-ventilated area. Never leave it under direct sunlight or near heat sources, like a radiator or a dryer.

‘While it is still damp, it is good to carefully shape it to its original form. If you need to restore the softness and fluffiness of the wool, brush the rug with a sheepskin brush once dry.’

Sheepskin is a very delicate material, which means any cleaning tricks that are overly aggressive should be avoided at all costs, lest you damage the fibers for good, warns Daniel Brown, cleaning expert. 7. Moisturize the base of real rugs

If your sheepskin rug is authentic, then the base of the rug will need careful attention too, reminds Josh Miller, cleaning expert. To prevent it drying out, you will need to ‘occasionally moisturize the leather beneath to protect and preserve it, he explains.

How to prevent furniture marks in carpets and rugs

'Ultimately, heavy furniture will cause some form of indentation on almost all types of carpet over time, but these steps can help reduce the impact, both literally and figuratively,' says Ryan Malone, business manager for rug specialist Love-Rugs.

1. Use furniture coasters or cups

'The primary cause of dents on your carpet is the pressure exerted by furniture. Reducing this pressure will effectively prevent dents from forming or minimize their depth, making them easier to fix,' says Ivo Iv, the founder and CEO of Decor Home Ideas.

'Furniture coasters, which are small, adhesive cushions, and furniture cups, typically made from wood, plastic, or metal, can distribute the weight of the furniture, thereby reducing the pressure at points of contact. 

'Plus, you can easily find coasters that will match or complement the aesthetics of your furniture or carpet.'

2. Rearrange furniture regularly

'This doesn’t have to be a major undertaking – even slight adjustments every few months can make a significant difference.'

You don't have to rearrange your furniture every time the carpet begins to show signs of indentation. Surface-level dents can easily be fixed by inserting your fingers into the indentations and working the pile back into shape – however, indentations that develop from leaving furniture in the same spot for years will be considerably harder to manually erase.

'When moving furniture, always lift rather than drag to prevent excessive pressure and potential damage to the carpet or rug,' adds Ryan Malone. Alternatively, you can use furniture sliders under heavy items to make it easy to move heavy furniture by yourself while reducing the risk of marks when rearranging your room.

First things first, these are the moths you need to worry about invading your home: clothes and carpet moths, which will put holes in everything from clothing to upholstery, and pantry moths, which enjoy snacking on bread and dry foods. It's the moth larvae that do the damage, spending around six weeks fattening themselves up on your belongings before becoming pupae and then adult moths who will start the cycle of egg-laying all over again. 

This is how to spot a moth infestation, which is usually counted as six moths or more.

1. Adult moths

'Moths aren't the most subtle pests, so chances are if you have them in your house, you will see them flying around and crawling on your walls, out of your closet, or around your light fixtures at night,' says Brett Bennett, director of operations, PURCOR Pest Solutions.

Full-grown moths look pretty harmless: they're usually around one-fifth of an inch long and are a light golden or silvery brown with pale-colored wings. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, drawers, or storage boxes.

The bad news? If you've spotted adult moths, the moth larvae will already have eaten holes into your belongings.  So, it's important to ensure you prevent moths in a closet and beyond so that the eggs don't hatch to become larvae in the first place.

And, of course, moths can come into your home through open doors and windows, so keeping screens shut is a good move.

To deal with moth infestations, Chris Parker, the founder of Parker Eco Pest Control has a few tips: 'Oust existing moths with traps and thorough cleaning. Wash or throw away infested clothes or food and scour all surfaces to eliminate eggs.

'Brush off wool or fur clothing after you wear it and store it in airtight bags or cool, ventilated, cedar closets to keep moths out of your clothes. Store food in airtight containers or the freezer to prevent kitchen moths. Look for and seal any cracks and crevices in your pantry, walls, or cabinets.'

Finding the perfect balance of contemporary and vintage in your home is no simple task, but it often leads to elevated and chic (yet welcoming) design schemes. And while investing in vintage furniture is a fast track to sophisticated design, vintage textiles require a bit more thought. Does fabric hold up as well as the carved wood and metallic pieces that fill vintage shops? Should you consider vintage upholstered furniture, curtains, or rugs to fill your own home?

When it comes to vintage rugs, designers say the answer is a resounding yes. Made to last and packed with character, these well-loved rugs are often worth the investment – you just have to know where, and how, to look. Here, interior designers share their top tips for shopping for antique rugs and styling them in any home, plus the pros and cons of bringing one home. And thanks to their tried-and-true advice, decorating with vintage has never been easier.

Should you buy a vintage rug?

Feeling hesitant about investing in vintage textiles, whether rugs or upholstered furniture, is completely normal, but designers say these pieces are usually worth the associated risks. Ayten Nadeau, founder and principal designer of North Carolina-based I-TEN DESIGNS, says there's so much to love about vintage rugs, wherever you plan to use them in your home.

'I was raised in a culturally rich household surrounded by antique rugs, which I believe to be one of the best investments. Antique rugs are versatile and ideal for kitchen runners, home offices, living rooms, dining rooms, or as door mats. They bring a timeless historical and cultural depth that new rugs can't match, enriching any space with texture, pattern, and color. They complement art, decor, and furniture gracefully,' says Ayten.

While these pieces often come with a hefty price tag, Donna Mondi – founder and principal designer of Chicago- and Denver-based Donna Mondi Interior Design – says their benefits will last the long term. That's why she suggests biting the bullet and leaning into the vintage rug look, even if it requires a bit of a budget stretch.

'While antique rugs won’t necessarily fit into the aesthetic of everyone’s homes, I do believe the timeless elegance and charm of an antique rug adds so much depth and interest to most interior spaces. As they typically can run on the more expensive side, especially to find the perfect rug that fits within your dimension and budget constraints, at DMID we always say that “you’ll only cry once”. So splurge on the rug and you’ll be investing in a piece that will last you more than a lifetime!' says Donna.

Alice Moszczynski, an interior designer with Planner 5D, shares that she's a 'big fan' of vintage and antique rugs. Still, she cautions those interested to make informed purchasing decisions. When you come across a top-grade, gorgeous vintage rug, you're left with only benefits, she says.

'It’s a great option for adding character, history, and sophistication to a space. Antique rugs often feature intricate designs, excellent craftsmanship, and a sense of history that can't be replicated in modern rugs. High-quality antique rugs can appreciate over time, making them both a beautiful addition to your home and a potential investment,' says Alice.

What are the pros and cons of investing in a vintage rug?

No matter the state of the vintage rug you find, it's important to consider the several pros and cons of investing. Donna says that the timeless nature and notable quality of vintage rugs make the pro side quite appealing.

'Antique rugs exude an elegance that can elevate the aesthetic of any space. The statement of these one-of-a-kind rugs add character and sophistication to any room,' she says. 'The majority of antique rugs are handwoven using traditional techniques versus the modern machine-made, mass-produced rugs that are being sold today. The durability of this technique makes it a worthwhile investment for your home.'

However, keeping the inherent cons of vintage rugs in mind is also key if you'd like to avoid unwanted surprises down the line. Aside from the higher cost often associated with vintage textiles, Donna adds that size and style restraints should be taken into account.

'While antique rugs are stunning, they don’t necessarily fit into every aesthetic. If you prefer a more clean, minimalist, or contemporary design aesthetic, an antique rug might not complement your current furnishings,' she says. 'The standards applied to contemporary rug production didn’t apply in the past, so you will see odd sizes which can be a bonus or a negative, depending on what you are looking for.'

Allison Garrison, founder and principal designer of San Diego-based Allito Space , says she loves vintage rugs. Despite their age and wear, they do the heavy lifting in hiding dust and stains that will inevitably come their way.

'They add so much character to a space and generally are the best at hiding wear and tear – two of the major advantages to buying them. One con or look out for is that sometimes they aren't perfectly straight or can have some holes or fraying. In some instances, this helps provide that extra character but you want to make sure that neither is too extreme,' she says.

On the other hand, Skip Sroka – founder and creative director of Washington, D.C.-based Sroka Design – says you should consider your lifestyle and authentic taste when deciding on a rug for your design scheme. These considerations will make the pros and cons a bit easier to navigate.

'Like all decisions, this should be a decision from the heart. This should be something that interests you and you want to live with it. Normally, these rugs are well-made and will last. If you are looking for a really soft rug, this is not the case. The rug will dictate the color scheme. Rugs are at a point in the market, where good buys can be had. They are in an upswing of value in the market, after years of being pushed aside,' says Skip.

What to look out for when shopping

Many of the pitfalls associated with vintage goods can easily be avoided – but knowing what questions to ask is key. Though graceful fading is 'part of the charm' of vintage rugs, according to Skip, the rug's coloration is just one of many qualities to note when perusing the antique shops for the perfect piece.

'Turn the rug over and notice how small and tight the knots are. The smaller the knots, normally the better wearing of the rug. Look at the whole rug for sun fading and for stains,' he says. 'Be aware that many rugs used vegetable dyes, so these often fade as time goes on. Look at the color of the back of the rug and compare it to the face of the rug to see how much fading has occurred.'

To ensure you're getting the full picture of the product before purchase, many designers suggest viewing the rug you're considering in person as opposed to online: 'Shopping in person is crucial, as online appearances can be deceiving, and there's beauty in the imperfections of antique rugs, such as over-dyeing or handmade flaws,' says Eugenia Triandos, principal designer of Montreal-based Hibou Design & Co.

Eugenia says she often turns to Persian rugs in her projects – though they can be more difficult to find and more expensive, 'their quality and unique character make them worth the investment,' she says. If you plan to buy vintage and antique furniture online, Allison says there are still precautions you can take to ensure you're getting the best deal possible.

'When you are looking at rug dealers online, you want to know if the rugs have been cleaned. If not, they can be quite dusty and you will have an extra undertaking once they arrive to you. Make sure to read the seller reviews so you get a good understanding of the condition of their products,' she says.

Regardless of whether you're shopping in person or online, Donna says tracking down a reputable seller is paramount: 'If the seller can provide authentication and provenance for the rug, you’ll ensure the validity of your purchase. Examine the rug carefully for signs of wear, damage or possible repairs. While some wear and tear is expected, make sure it isn’t anything more significant than you’re willing to live with,' she says.

How to style a vintage rug in any home

Styling antique furniture for a timeless, transitional space looks a bit different in each and every home, but there are a few rules of thumb that designers swear by. When it comes to vintage rugs, Skip says the design possibilities are 'as wide as your imagination.' To start styling, he suggests looking at the color palette already present in the rest of the space.

'Look at some of the background colors and use that as a starting point for your neutrals. Be aware that if you repeat the dominant colors in the rug, the room may become heavy-looking. You can get a more contemporary effect by using textured neutrals for the upholstery and repeating the colors of the rug in pillows and artwork,' he says. 'Putting a texture on the walls to soften the effect of the rug also works beautifully. You may want to create a cocoon by repeating a color in the rug and even doing the major upholstery in the room in that color.'

Vintage rugs present the perfect opportunity to create a transitional design within your home, and Donna says she loves the chance to mix the old with the new. She adds that these pieces 'are the perfect way to layer in more character and depth to a space that's full of more modern furnishings.'

'Rugs provide a visual anchor to a space so arrange your furniture accordingly to create a cohesive and comfortable layout. Add accessories throughout the space that tie in the colors from the rug. You can do this through a pop of color in an accent pillow, antique accessories on a cocktail table, or artwork that complements the color scheme and style of the rug. We treat rugs like a piece of artwork so make sure to show off the rug’s beauty in whichever space you style it in!' says Donna.

If you're working with a vintage rug that's not exactly the right size for your space, you're not alone – but designers who work with antiques often have discovered a clever workaround: 'If you have fallen in love with a rug that is not quite big enough, an old designer trick is to have a fairly flat weave Berber rug of the background color of the rug made to the right size and then place the rug under your major conversation area,' says Skip.

'I love antique rugs in almost any space, but since you can't specify an exact size, sometimes it helps to add in a natural fiber rug underneath to get the desired coverage for your space. A runner for a kitchen is classic and so easy to style,' adds Allison.

Shop with caution and style with care, and a vintage rug will add the perfect dose of personality to any space. And, as Alice adds, 'by purchasing an antique rug, you're participating in sustainable decor by giving new life to a piece that already exists' – even more reason to go the vintage route next time you're shopping rugs.

Not even the best cleaning tips can make these nine pieces easy enough to clean to make them worth keeping in your home, professional cleaners warn. Here’s why. 

1. Vases and decorative bowls

Decorating with vases and beautiful bowls is a great way to fill space, add fresh blooms to make a home smell nice, and catch odd bits to prevent clutter. However, despite their practicality, they are very time-consuming to keep clean, warns Elizabeth Shields, operations manager of Super Cleaning Service, Louisville:

‘While they aren't exactly dust magnets, they can still accumulate dust, especially if not regularly wiped. Plus, moving them around for a wipe-down on the surface they're placed on takes a bit of time, and that poses a risk of damage.’ 

If you still want vases and bowls. Opt for ones that have smooth surfaces that are easy to wipe down, rather than textured or decorative finishes.

2. Certain decorative pillows

Most of the best throw pillows have machine-washable covers, making them super simple to keep clean and use around your home as decor. Certain covers with jewels or other textures are a nightmare to disinfect and make it difficult to remove odors from upholstery, however, says Tina Priestly, Owner and CEO of Ready, Set, REFRESH:

‘Decorative pillows can add personality to a space, but those with intricate patterns or delicate materials can be a hassle to clean. Dust and dirt tend to hide in the nooks and crannies, so I recommend opting for removable covers that can be easily washed.’ 

3. Houseplants

You might not pay any mind to cleaning houseplants, but they are magnets for dust, points out Elizabeth Shields, operations manager. 

‘Not being a green thumb can have advantages because I don’t keep plants in my home. They might be refreshing to have in sight, but their leaves collect dust and that needs to be regularly wiped – which can be incredibly time-consuming with a large plan or finicky for those with tiny leaves.’ 

Dust doesn't harm houseplants, but it can diminish their appearance, so it will be up to you to decide if it bothers you or not, and if you think it is worth cleaning houseplant leaves. 

4. Silk furnishings

No matter if you are washing a silk pillowcase or cleaning upholstery, silk can be a nightmare to clean and keep clean, warns Tina Priestly, cleaning expert. 

‘They might be luxurious, but they require constant, gentle care. Water stains are a common issue, so dry cleaning is usually the best option. Following the care instructions is crucial to preserve their beauty.’ 

5. Light colored furnishings

If you are a neat freak, then anything light-colored should be a no-go for your home, advises Elizabeth Shields, operations manager. Light-colored carpets, upholstery, and window treatments will always show dirt and require continuous cleaning to maintain their appearance, she warns. This means cream is one of the top sofa and carpet colors to avoid.

‘They feel nice on your feet, and any area decorated with them instantly feels cozy, but they also trap dirt and dust, making vacuuming a chore,’ she explains. ‘White carpets sure look pristine and aesthetic, but every spill, every smidge, and even a speck of dirt can be easily noticed. The upkeep, involving spot cleaning and stain removal, makes them high maintenance.’

6. Chandeliers

‘Chandeliers are undeniably stunning, but they can be incredibly challenging to keep clean,’ says Vanessa Terra Bossart, professional home cleaner and owner of Green Terra Cleaning. ‘Their intricate designs made from crystals or glass mean every crevice requires careful attention to remove dust while mitigating the risk of damage.’ 

If you are not prepared to climb up there and wipe it down carefully with a cloth or bring it down from the ceiling from time to time, you might be better off with alternative lighting ideas instead. 

7. Shag rugs

Of all the area rug mistakes to avoid, picking a shag rug for a high-traffic spot is amongst the most important. Shaggy rugs help to warm up a space and feel incredibly underfoot, but they are incredibly difficult to truly clean – even when vacuuming, warns Tina Priestly, cleaning expert.

If you have a shag rug, Tina recommends taking it outside regularly to beat it and force the dirt out, followed by cleaning with the best vacuum cleaner. This is a lot more work than simply vacuuming, however, so you will have to decide if the effort is worth it for yourself. 

8. Small knick-knacks

If you are a collector or maximalist, you will understand the charm and appeal of clustering small knick-knacks and odd decor pieces to fill shelves and cubbies. However, these make cleaning surfaces and removing dust in your home almost impossible. For this reason, Axel Avery, cleaning expert at Oakville Maids, recommends limiting them where possible: 

‘Small knick-knacks are the most annoying items to clean. Anything animal-shaped especially because it’s all curves and that collects dust like crazy. Besides, they look outdated and create so much visual noise.

‘Fortunately, most of them can be soaked in hot, soapy water, and that makes the process easier.’

9. Anything woven

We are suckers for anything woven – storage baskets and rugs included. However, these natural materials offer unique cleaning challenges – including the fact you can’t afford to get them wet, Alessandro Gazzo, cleaning expert at Emily’s Maids of Dallas, shares. As such, if you want a home that is easy to clean, these are best left at the store, they recommend. 

‘One of the most frustrating décor items to clean is woven baskets / woven rugs. They look beautiful and cozy, but grime and lint stick to them, and it can take hours to remove them. Flat surfaces are always going to be easier to clean, or at least surfaces that don’t have deep, complex textures. You easily save 70% of your time by picking smoother surfaces instead.’

'A well-chosen rug can function as a captivating focal point within a room, much like a beautiful piece of artwork,' declares Claire Garner, director, Claire Garner Interiors, 'While carpets can provide a soft and inviting surface underfoot.'

Both have their place in our homes as designer Mary Jo Major of Texas-based Rise Interiors says: 'I regularly add rugs or carpets to most places in a home with the exception of kitchen eating areas. It adds soundproofing, spatial definition and comfort underfoot. The con is that you have to vacuum pretty regularly in heavy traffic areas and get them professionally cleaned once a year. Not bad for something that brings you comfort and joy every day!'

The case for choosing carpet

Carpet will always cozy up a space

There’s nothing like stepping out of your bed and on to the plushy softness of a thick carpet – especially on a cold winter’s morning. That’s why so many of us – and so many interior designers – love using carpet in the bedroom. It’s the ultimate way to create a relaxed, cozy cocoon for sleeping, reading or simply chilling out after a long day.

'Carpets contribute significantly to the coziness and warmth of a space, providing a soft and inviting surface underfoot,' declares Claire Garner. 'They act as natural insulators, retaining heat during colder months and creating a comfortable environment for relaxation and socializing.'

'Wall-to-wall wool carpet is heavenly in a bedroom because it feels marvellous underfoot,' says Kentucky-based interior designer Bethany Adams. 'It's wonderfully sound-dampening and is naturally flame retardant which is why I usually insist on it in children’s room and on stairs.'

You can make bolder statements with carpet

While neutral-colored carpets offer a blank canvas for a decorating scheme, bold patterns underfoot are a really cool way to inject masses of personality.

So why not embrace a tartan, floral, or botanic print carpet and let your floors become the focal point of your space? It’s a 2024 alternative to using print on the walls. Or else go for both in a maximalist mash-up. Remember, busy print carpets are also an amazing way to hide a multitude of sins in a busy family home.

'Bolder statement patterns always tend to lend themselves well to hallways, stairs, and landing spaces as these tend to be high-traffic areas,' explains Jodie Hatton, design manager at Brintons. 'As these areas aren’t ‘lived in’, they also lend themselves to creating more of a design statement, as there is a limited amount of space for furniture.'

Why not tear up the rule book and go for what you love,' declares Katrina Dalley. 'Bringing in something bold and fun is a great option and if you truly love it, will always be a great feature in your scheme.'

Carpet is great for soundproofing

Wall-to-wall carpet is a great way to dampen sound transmission and effectively reduce noise levels within the home.

This is a bonus in upstairs bedrooms or in high-traffic areas. Also in busy households with small children running around. 'It minimizes disruptions and enhances overall acoustic comfort,' explains interior designer Garner.

Californian-based designer Mary Beth Christopher adds: 'We mostly turn to rugs for floor coverings, but there is definitely a time and a place for carpet. We like to use it in kids’ bedrooms and bedrooms that are in mountain homes because it makes a space feel warm and soft underfoot.'

'Our recommendation is to choose carpet that is 100% wool, or mostly wool, because it can be treated and easily cleaned. Wool carpet will last longer, making it a good investment in the long run.'

You can get a really luxe finish

Loop and twist carpets are a popular choice, especially in hardwearing areas such as hallways, stairs, and living rooms. However, there is something oh-so opulent about a sumptuous velvet carpet. These smooth finish carpets have a short, dense, uniform cut pile that offers top notch comfort underfoot.

As such, velvet carpets are best suited to guest bedrooms and formal lounges, any rooms with a low footfall.

'The feel of a room is important and a very personal choice,' explains Hatton at Brintons. 'Some will want a calming, relaxing bedroom to retreat to while others may want more of a boudoir feel. For the ultimate luxury and plush feel, take a look at a velvet option.'

Their are eco-friendly options too

For an ethically sourced option, why not harness the benefits of natural plant fiber carpets? In a range of different fibers and weaves, they are also comforting underfoot.

'Hardwearing and kind on the planet, there is a natural fiber flooring to suit all interior design styles, from rustic country to modern and minimalist,' enthuses Kirsty Barton of Alternative Flooring.

With glossy, yellow tones, jute is one of the most eco-friendly fibers, being fast and easy to grow. It’s one of the softer plant based carpets so better suited to low-traffic areas in the home. Sisal is a great all-rounder: incredibly strong, with dark flecks to hide a multitude of sins and can be easily dyed to different shades

Look to seagrass for a super natural choice. It cannot be bleached or dyed and is often hand spun and hand woven for a naturally crafted look. Avoid using on the stairs as seagrass contains natural oils that can be slippery underfoot.

For busy areas of the home, consider hardwearing coir. It has a fibrous and slightly coarser texture, perfect for hardworking entryways and boot rooms.

The case for choosing rugs

Rugs are less of a commitment to pattern and color

One of the major design benefits of using rugs in a design scheme is that they can inject a huge shot of color and pattern. Of course, carpeting can do the same, but a colorful area rug won’t dominate the room in quite the same way.

From bold animal prints to blowsy florals and graphic stripes, there’s a print and a pattern to suit every color palette. Not to mention different shapes and sizes.

'The nice thing about area rugs versus carpet is they can bring in pattern and color more than solid wall-to-wall carpet,' explains Texas-based interior designer Kim Armstrong. 'I love a wool hand knot, whenever the budget allows, for creating textural depth and richness. Wool is also extremely durable and will last forever.'

If budget is tight, a printed cotton and poly blend washable rug might do the trick. 'There are so many styles available, from modern, pop art to traditional,' adds Kim 'And I love how the print can replicate the textural aesthetic of a hand knotted rug.'

Don’t forget to consider the scale of the room and the repeat size of the print when choosing a patterned rug.

You can layer rugs

If you’re lucky enough to have rooms with original wood parquet flooring or limestone flags, the last thing you’ll want to do is cover them up.

That’s where the beauty of rugs comes in. You can keep hold of your original hard floors and then layer with rugs for added comfort and softness underfoot.

And why not steal a tip from the design experts by layering rugs over carpets too.

'When layering rugs, opting for a thinner pile or natural materials like sisal on top of carpeting can introduce beautiful textural contrasts and visual interest,' says designer Claire Garner. 'This layering technique adds depth and dimension to the space while infusing it with warmth and character.'

Rugs are super flexible

While wall-to-wall carpets are fixed in place, the portability and versatility of rugs is a huge plus point.

Rugs are an amazing design tool to refresh a room quickly. But they can easily be swapped out if your interior tastes shift or if the function of a room changes.

'My go-to is a rug with a sticky-backed underlay to anchor the room and provide warmth when the floorboards are drafty,' explains London-based interior decorator Olivia Outred. 'I always go for an inexpensive rug option, something that, like a cushion, can be swapped out, creating a new look and breath of fresh air for a room.'

Of course, rugs can often be an investment piece too so it’s important to consider the color with your overall design scheme and keep possible future schemes in mind.

Rugs can be much easier to clean

Whether you choose carpet or rugs – or a combination of both – it’s important to select the right material for the right space. Also, rugs have the added advantage of being able to be cleaned more easily.

'Jute or sisal is the perfect runner or area rug for a mudroom because, unlike wool, it doesn’t contain any electrostatic, which means the dirt particles cannot attach to the fiber. Any dried mud can be vacuumed up,' explains designer Bethany Adams. 'A small cotton rug is great in a bathroom because you can easily toss it into the laundry and give it a freshen up as needed.'

'This smart striped rug is actually an indoor-outdoor rug made from woven polypropylene,' she adds. 'The project was a redecoration for an active, young family with a dog and the brief was to incorporate fun colors, bold patterns and above all kid and pet-friendly materials Everything had to be easy to clean because messes were a given.'

Rugs can help zone rooms

Rugs are a brilliant design tool for zoning different areas within open-plan spaces. They can create visual boundaries without the need for physical walls. The result is defined living, dining and relaxation zones but with a cohesive flow throughout. 

'When introduced to a space properly, rugs can create cohesion within a scheme,' says Kit Kemp, founder and creative director, Kit Kemp Design Studio, 'And they are fantastic for creating a statement, or zoning areas in a large open space. I love to use a rug under a dining table. Not only does it zone the dining area, it creates a sense of drama.'

'The use of a rug or carpet can completely change how a room looks and feels. A statement rug will zone a space drawing the eye and can become the focal point of a space, whereas a carpet will create a harmonious and expansive feeling," explains Kit Kemp.

You can make either work in any space, but the key is what's most practical for the room. And think about your design tastes too. If you like to switch things around regularly a rug might be a better choice, but if you are less fickle with your design choices invest in wall-to-wall carpet, you can always layer rugs on top. And think about who uses the space too. If you have pets or children it's far easier to clean a rug, some are even machine washable. 

As kitchens become much more sociable spaces, used not just for cooking but throughout the day, so kitchen ideas become cozier and more inviting. Introducing color, texture and pattern is the secret to a liveable space, and kitchen rugs play a pivotal role. 

‘Rug placement in a kitchen might not feel as obvious compared to rooms where having a rug is standard. However, the kitchen is just as much a living space as any other, and the same rug placement rules apply,’ points out interior designer, Kara Childress. 

Regardless of placement, a low-pile or flat-weave style rug works best in the kitchen, as it minimizes trip hazards and allows for easy maintenance in this high-traffic area. Do ensure your chosen rug has a non-slip backing or use a separate anti-slip mat beneath to secure your rug in position. This latter point is vital in a room in which you carry hot pans.

Kitchen rug placement rules

From defining traffic routes and protecting flooring, to improving comfort and enhancing design cohesion, understanding the principles of kitchen rug placement will help ensure your kitchen rugs are a worthy investment and reach their full design potential. Read on to learn the secrets of mastering kitchen rug placement from the experts.

1. Two can be better than one

There are many reasons why two rugs can work better than one. Annie Burrows, lead designer at Blakes London, advocates doubling up underfoot. ‘Rugs tend to become disproportionately more expensive the larger they become, so choosing two rugs not only allows for more choice on the market, but also increases flexibility and practicality in situ, all while likely being a more cost-effective solution,’ she says.

Two rugs create a more contemporary aesthetic to one long runner helping to break up and soften a long, narrow walkway. ‘Hygiene wise, two smaller rugs are easier to move and clean beneath and are also more likely to fit within a standard washing machine, because should you wish to place a rug in a kitchen, we really would suggest it's one that is machine washable,’ adds Annie.  

Smaller rugs are easier to position strategically into high traffic areas to help the wear and tear of a floor. This is particularly important if using natural porous stones or timber. Smaller rugs are also easier to adjust periodically which can help to avoid patchy sun damage to the floor.   

2. Place a rug under a portable island or table

If your central kitchen feature is a cook’s table or portable kitchen island unit, Hanna Li, cofounder of Hanna Li Interiors, recommends placing a rug beneath. ‘When designing a multipurpose kitchen or working within a tight space, having a mobile island or central table is incredibly convenient as they can be moved out of the way when more space is required for entertaining,’ she says. ‘However, the weight of the island can potentially damage the flooring. To address this issue, adding a rug and rug pad can provide protection while also adding a practical and soft surface to stand on.’

Beyond functionality, Hanna believes a central rug serves as a nice detail and can prove more practical than runners in the space, as they may otherwise get shifted around in a high-traffic zone. ‘Additionally, if the island or table accommodates seating, the rug will create a cozy and inviting environment,’ she adds. ‘Depending on the island size, the rug size is recommended to be 1-2ft wider than the island on both ends of where the island waterfalls, and 3-4 ft where stools are placed and on the opposite side of the stools to match.’

3. Allow a decent gap around the full perimeter

One of the worst kitchen rug placement crimes that no experienced designer commits is positioning rugs tight up to the kitchen cabinets. ‘Rugs always need space to breathe,’ explains Kristine Renee, co-founder of Design Alchemy. ‘A minimum of 6” on all sides is a good rule of thumb. If you sandwich a rug directly against cabinetry or appliances, the room immediately feels cramped and appears smaller. A rug should ground the space, while also providing warmth and an added layer of durability in high-traffic areas.’

4. Do use rugs to zone

Few things disrupt the visual clarity of a kitchen than randomly placed rugs that neither anchor nor define. ‘Using rugs to zone different areas in your kitchen is both practical and stylish – we particularly recommend assigning rugs to specific areas like cooking, dining and prep,’ says Ginger Curtis, Founder & CEO of Urbanology Designs.

When zoning with rugs, it’s important to choose your rug material according to the area it is placed in. For example, in the cooking area you’ll want something washable, outdoor rugs are also worth considering as they are generally very hardwearing. In a soft seating area, go for softer, deep piles rugs that dial up the comfort levels.

‘Coordinate rugs with your kitchen's decor for a cohesive look. It doesn’t need to match exactly, but it should complement beautifully,’ adds Ginger.

5. Go longer than the island

Using a runner in the kitchen is a great way to warm up the space and add some visual interest. If you’re scaling a runner style rug with a kitchen island, either stay within the island width or go past it by several feet. If the rug's length only goes past the island by an inch or two, it doesn’t look intentional.

Having the runner extend beyond the kitchen island is interior designer Linda Eyles’ preferred rug placement rule. ‘The whole space feels more generous, in the same way that doing tall draperies makes a room appear bigger,’ she explains. ‘Islands are, by nature, smaller than the perimeter counters, so you want the runner to relate to the space as a whole. If you only go as big as the island, you cut off the rest of the room. Plus, a longer runner gives you more color and texture, which leads the eye through the space.’

6. Center your rug on a strong feature

In the same way that you should center a living room rug on the fireplace or a bedroom rug on the bed, aligning with a focal point will have an anchoring effect and ensure your kitchen rug placement appears considered and balanced.  

‘A key kitchen rug rule is to center your rug on a key feature within the space, such as this antique rug which was placed in direct sightline of the sliding pantry door,’ confirms interior designer, Kara Childress. ‘The balance between the old-world feel of the rug and the reclaimed kitchen door harmonizes the entire space, Additionally, centering the rug on this commonly accessed door adds a visual flow and redefines the kitchen area.’  

7. Place rugs according to comfort and convenience

Strategically selecting rugs of varying thicknesses based on their placement in the kitchen will create a functional and comfortable environment that enhances both your cooking experience and the overall aesthetics of the space. 

Introducing a thicker rug in front of the cooker provides a plush and comfortable surface underfoot, ensuring that you can cook up a storm in comfort. The added cushioning helps to alleviate fatigue and strain on your feet, making culinary marathons more enjoyable,’ says interior designer, Meredith Owen. ‘Over by the sink area, we’d recommend opting for a thinner rug, which will dry faster and is less likely to retain moisture.'

8. Always cover your exits

If your kitchen has doors opening directly out into the garden or patio it’s vital to position a rug, or doormat, at the main entry/exit point. Strategically placed rugs will help protect the floor from dirt, debris, and moisture that may be tracked in from outside, preventing potential damage and wear to your kitchen flooring. 

‘Even if your kitchen floors are extremely practical, like porcelain tiles for example, having doormats available for family and guests to wipe their feet or remove their shoes if preferred, will help keep the kitchen clean and hygienic,’ adds Dean Keyworth, founder of Armstrong Keyworth.

Choose rugs made from fit-for-purpose materials such as rubber-backed microfiber or coir. Machine washable rugs can also work well if you want something softer and less “hallway”. Consider a runner if you have a wide expanse of sliding or bi-folding doors. Ensure your chosen rug has non-slip backing so it won’t trip children up as they run in and out of the garden.

Where to place a rug in a galley kitchen?

When pondering where to place a rug in a galley kitchen try to avoid rug placement that makes a narrow kitchen feel even narrower. A popular option is to place a runner style rug in the center of the galley kitchen, running parallel with the units on either side. This can work well but do be careful to get a rug that’s sufficiently wide, so it doesn’t have a skinny run-way effect.

Placing a rug in front of the sink or stove in a galley kitchen can help break up a narrow strip of flooring and make it feel wider, while also providing a soft and comfortable surface underfoot during meal preparation and clean-up tasks.

Is it okay to put a rug in the kitchen?

Finally, and above all, a kitchen with rugs will be infused with warmth and texture, balancing out the many hard surfaces that are part and parcel of any kitchen design.

Although decking has been a staple of the boat building business for centuries, this design approach didn't enter the interiors world until the 60s. Many Americans hankered after an indoor-outdoor style extension to their home on which to host their BBQs, so built elevated patios directly off their living spaces out of decking – chosen because it's lightweight and easy on the eye.

Over the years, decking's usage has expanded, and it has become the go-to material for a contemporary patio or roof terrace. Materials have also come into their own. While early decks were made out of first-generation hardwoods, now it's hard-wearing composites and eco products made of recycled materials that are all the rage for backyards. We are also experimenting with stains and widths to give the wood a very contemporary feel.

1. Build a custom deck

If you're looking for small deck ideas, a custom design is a great choice, because it will be built to maximize your space.

'A custom deck is a uniquely designed structure that meets your specific needs and preferences,' says Sam Toole CMO of TimberTech, a composite decking company. 'Working with a contractor for a custom-built deck ensures your deck is built to the right specifications for lasting performance.'

2. Light up decking at night

To ensure your decked space is useable after dark as well as during the day, it's sensible to plan your deck lighting ideas from the outset. 

When planned correctly, it will allow you to use the space throughout the year. Plus, you can use it to highlight some of your favorite features in your yard, such as a pool or hot tub area, as the owners of this property have done so well. 

'Simple LED lights inset in the deck or in steps will create a subtle glow and help to light the way after dark,' says Beth Murton, Head of Gardens for Homes & Gardens. 'Proper deck lighting is especially important on a sloped site or where there are lots of steps to ensure that it is safe for everyone to use at night. 

'Although it's possible to retro fit lighting, for the sleekest look it is always best to fit it as the same time as your deck,' adds Beth. 'Your decking supplier will be able to advise on the most suitable products to include in your space, especially if you are fitting them near a water feature, pool or hot tub area.'

3. Surround a pool with decking

Decking is the perfect partner for a tropical-style space complete with pool, outdoor shower and lush, leafy foliage, as showcased in this stunning garden by Kate Gould at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2022. 

Not only does pool decking feel soft and warm underfoot, but the natural colors and textures enhance the spa-like vibe of the space. A composite material that is resistant to rot and mold would be the smartest choice for a space like this where it is likely get wet on a regular basis. 

Kate specifically chose planting that has a 'a strong evergreen backbone and a tropical theme' to showcase how effective green planting can be at ensuring there is plenty of color and texture in an outdoor space all year round. 

4. Create pockets of planting

Finding ways to encourage more pollinators and wildlife to our backyards is key as their habitats are being gradually eroded. If you're going to add more hardscaping to your backyard, consider how you can still incorporate areas of planting in your landscaping ideas. 

We love how this decked space includes mini pockets of planting in the deck, softening the look of the timber and creating a more natural look that works particularly well with the cottage garden-style space. 

Good options to plant include mini ferns, creeping thyme for its nice smell, or mat-forming varieties of stonecrop.

'A herringbone pattern is rich in visual interest and immediately elevates the style of your outdoor living space,' says Sam Toole. 'This pattern can also serve as an intricate focal point when used as a framed inlay.'

6. Pair a deck with a patio

In a large outdoor space, vary your landscaping to create a more inviting space. At the Santa Barbara, California home above, designer Jessica Risko Smith added a deck adjacent to the pool patio to break up the vast space. 

The wood decking adds a sense of warmth to the harder landscaping elements of the patio, and helps delineate the living area from the nearby pool deck. 

7. Opt for modular furniture to maximize deck space

'For maximum versatility and a totally curated space, opt for modular outdoor furniture and décor,' says Sam Toole. 'Modular pieces can be easily rearranged and sometimes nest inside each other for optimal flexibility and functionality. So, whether you’re hosting a small intimate gathering or a big family get-together, your space can accommodate your needs.' 

8. Soften a deck with rugs and cushions

Although decking is a practical material for an outdoor space, if you're going to be using it as your main outdoor living area, chances are you'll want to soften the overall look of all that wood. 

Adding outdoor rugs and oversized floor cushions can introduce pattern and texture to the space, helping to break up the large expanse of timber. What's more, if you have a large decked space, rugs can help to zone different sections of it, separating lounging areas from dining spaces, for example. 

Cleaning an outdoor rug is super easy too – all you need is some warm water and a good scrubbing brush to remove any stubborn stains. 

9. Use decking to zone a small space

It’s not a surprise that decking is now used so widely. It can be widened into platforms or narrowed into paths to link different areas, binding together a garden’s design.

Planted up with ornamental grasses and evergreen shrubs, they will provide year-round interest when viewed from both the deck and the house. The simple green and white color sheme works beautifully with the natural look of the timber decking too. 

12. Color coordinate decking and fences

An outdoor room that is an immediate extension of the home suits a scheme in which all furnishings – decking, fencing, seating, cushions, containers and plants – are color coordinated. 

In such a scheme, there is scope for imaginative designs using wood stains, available in a wide selection of colors. And the advantage of timber instead of paving or stone is that its color can be easily changed. Experiment with different shades on some timber offcuts first to make sure you are happy with how it will look once the decking stain has dried completely.

13. Use plants to soften the edges of a deck

When drawing up your plans, think about where your chosen plants will fit best – whether in pots, flower beds adjacent to the deck, or in beds countersunk within it – before you lay the decking. Allow plants to grow over the edge of the deck to soften the hard lines and create a more natural look. 

Plus, if you position your plants correctly and choose the right plants, they can offer privacy or shade. Certain plants, like the citronella plant, can even help keep bugs and pests away from your outdoor dining area. 

14. Go for a natural finish

At its best, a timber deck is a handsome, hard-wearing surface that complements most garden settings. It’s a natural material that provides a sympathetic background to plants, blending beautifully with water, stone and trees. Timber lends itself to different styles of architecture and design. A deck can be designed in a smart, contemporary look, as easily as in a more traditional style.

An informal look is created when decking is left natural and allowed to weather with time. It turns a silvery-grey, creating a deck color idea that blends beautifully with plants and the natural landscape. A good compromise is to treat the decking with a wood oil that simply enhances the natural beauty of the wood – products made for treating timber boats are ideal.

But decks don’t only look good: other advantages include being relatively lightweight in comparison to stone, quick and easy to install and forgiving. Timber can be cut to size to fit perfectly round awkward corners, or over manhole covers and is easily extended at a later date.

15. Create a simple path with decking boards

Decking boards are a smart option for a garden path, creating an inexpensive boardwalk effect in a gravel garden. 

You could also consider laying your decking planks at different angles or creating curves, but remember, construction is more time-consuming on a larger site. Sketch out your plans, take accurate measurements and mark the ground with posts and strings for the best results. 

16. Introduce interest with a raised platform

Use decking to lead the eye to a secluded seating spot at the end of your backyard. Decking is especially useful on plots where there is a difference in height, because it can be simply laid to fit the space with steps ascending or descending to other levels. 

When choosing a site for a deck, avoid poorly ventilated areas with little sunlight – this can cause rot and algae. Raised decks should be built to encourage a free flow of air through gaps between the decking fascia, with no spaces big enough to let in rats or mice. 

'Decking is an excellent choice if you're landscaping your backyard from scratch or you simply want to give it a new look,' says Beth Murton. 

'If you're relatively experienced at DIY, it's certainly possible to build a deck yourself, but it's labor intensive and is likely to take you far longer than you think. It's also essential to get the base of your deck right to ensure it is strong and can support the weight of the structure (and the people using it). Making any decking design mistake can be a costly business, so in the long run you may find it cheaper to hire a professional to fit it for you.'

If you’re in the market for new designer goods for all your spring decor ideas, you should absolutely take a look at the Saks Friends and Family Spring 2024 sale. Washable rugs are a godsend. They look great, warm up a space, and have the added benefit of being low-maintenance and super simple to clean. This is why I have Ruggable rugs in high-traffic spots like my dining room and kitchen. 

While they are relatively low maintenance, my washable rugs do occasionally need to be washed to keep them fresh (especially when I accidentally spill something when making dinner). Luckily, they are much easier to manage than cleaning an area rug generally. I have even got the process down to four easy steps. 

This is how I clean my flat woven and plush Ruggable rugs in only four steps with minimal effort. 

How to clean Ruggable rugs

Unlike cleaning a carpet without a machine, Ruggable rugs don't require any scrubbing on your hands and knees. They can be easily tossed in the washing machine and cleaned as you would your regular laundry – with only a few caveats. 

1. Remove the rug cover

Ruggable rugs are made up of two parts – the rug pad (the more structured section that sits on the floor) and the rug cover (the pretty bit that sticks on top). When washing my Ruggable rugs, I wash one at a time, starting with vacuuming gently without the beater brush to remove any loose debris before removing the cover and bunching it in the washing machine so the design is on the outside. As this is the bit that comes in contact with dirt, putting it on the outside ensures it is the first to come into contact with my laundry detergent. 

However, the experts at Ruggable add that it is important to check your washing machine's load limit before washing your rug. While many rugs fit in a standard machine, very large rugs may exceed the weight limit when wet, so it is important to read the manual and check your rug care label first to avoid this common washing machine mistake. 

2. Wash with a gentle detergent – but skip the softener

I am always careful to avoid using fabric softener on my Ruggable rug and for several reasons. Fabric softener can leave behind a sticky residue that may affect the look or feel of your rug or even make it more likely to pick up dirt and stains. Usually, a mild detergent is enough to remove marks and freshen up the scent. Use around the same amount you would when doing laundry normally – I discovered that you don't need extra just because it is an item that goes on the floor. 

That said, you can also clean with white vinegar, adding half a cup to your washing machine detergent drawer or using a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and warm water to spot treat stains on a Ruggable rug before it goes in the washing machine. This is especially good for dealing with pet odors.

3. Dry naturally

There are several benefits to air-drying laundry, but this step is especially important when it comes to Ruggable rugs. While the instructions state that you can dry a Ruggable rug in a tumble dryer on low heat, I find that it is best to leave it to dry naturally to prolong its lifespan. 

Drying naturally puts less stress on the fibers, ensuring that the rug keeps its shape and design – it also helps improve the scent too. 

4. Clean the rug pad by hand

The rug pad is the only section of Ruggable rugs that cannot go in a washing machine. Luckily, I find them very easy to clean by hand or with the help of a broom. 

To clean my rug pad, I start by vacuuming on the lowest suction setting and without the beater brush to collect dust and loose debris, then anything left stuck behind is gently scrubbed off with a stiff-bristled broom. In summer, I find it helpful to do this outside on my patio, helping to air the rug pad out and dispel any odors. 

If there are any stubborn marks or stains on the rug pad, I use a similar approach to cleaning stains on the cover – mixing equal parts white vinegar and warm water before washing it down with a clean cloth or microfiber mop. Then, I hang it on my washing line or clothes horse to dry naturally in a well-ventilated space or with the help of my dehumidifier, before putting my dried rug cover back on.

How often should you wash a Ruggable rug?

Ruggable rugs are low-maintenance and only need washing when they become dirty, or you want to freshen up the space. As a general rule of thumb, you should wash them at least twice a year, vacuuming regularly, and spot-treat them in between as needed.  

Is a Ruggable rug hard to vacuum?

If your Ruggable rug is held down by furniture, then it is as easy to vacuum as any other rug or carpet. That being said, I have found that my Ruggable runner, which runs down the center of my kitchen, lifts when I try to vacuum it as it is lightweight and my vacuum suction is so strong. I usually beat the rug out instead and then vacuum up the debris to get around this.

Over lockdown, while most of my friends were creating banana bread and trying to create home gyms in their living room, I was swayed by the opulent and lavish interiors seen on everyone’s favorite binge-worthy Netflix drama, Bridgerton.

Honestly, I wasn’t the only one: The Regencycore interior design trend took the world by storm in 2021, and now it’s back again with the Bridgerton x Ruggable collection that just launched ahead of the new season releasing in May. Upon perusing the collaboration for myself, I was blown away by the way in which the collection effortlessly intertwines the old and the new, and I especially love how easy these rugs are to clean. Ruggable is known for its machine-washable designs, and even though the rugs look high-maintenance, they absolutely aren’t in the least. What makes Ruggable’s machine-washable rugs so durable?

I’ve seen my fair share of machine-washable rugs over the years, and Ruggable really ups the ante when it comes to the technology used to create theirs. Unlike most rugs, the Ruggable is a two-part system where the base (also known as the “pad”) essentially functions as one giant sheet of non-slip velcro. The top part of the rug is a removable, waterproof, stain-resistant, and machine-washable cover that's ideal for messy and unpredictable households, and you can simply pop that in for a quick clean whenever it gets dirty.

Are Ruggable rugs easy to clean?

Ruggable rugs are extremely easy to clean, thanks to the fact that they can just be popped in the washing machine. Simply remove the cover from the pad, and run it in the washer (usually on delicates at low temperatures), and then leave to air dry. For 2026, flooring trends include timeless options that work seamlessly across many interior design styles for a pared-back look, as well as far more experimental flooring options. These playful styles – think brightly colored tiles and geometric designs – represent a wider shift in the design world in 2026 toward personality-led design.

1. Mosaic tiles in geometric patterns

Starting with mosaic tiles, more specifically those with geometric patterns, as shown above in this bathroom designed by Catherine Ebert Interiors. 'Patterned flooring has been very popular over the past few years and I expect to see that continue in 2026,' says designer Catherine Ebert. 

'Mosaic tiles in geometric patterns are often a go-to for me, such as in this powder room because they animate the space in spaces where you cannot rely on rugs and furnishings to provide interest. Multi-colored marble mosaics have been really on the rise and I'm looking forward to using some with more curvilinear forms in the coming year!'

2. Art Deco-inspired parquet

Parquet is a timeless style that promotes a feeling of grandeur, especially when used in large, open spaces such as living room flooring. Designers expect that this wooden flooring style will continue to be embraced throughout 2024 for its widespread appeal. 

'I think we’ll continue to see the use of hardwood floor inlays and geometric parquet patterns,' observes interior designer Lauren Sullivan, founder of Well by Design. 'They feel nostalgic yet timeless, and I love the Art Deco vibe they bring to a space.'

3. Natural flooring options

'Authentic finishes and raw materials is a key flooring trend this year,' observes Lorna Williams, Head of Product Design and Visual Creation at flooring company Amtico. 'Soft and minimal, think warmer, rustic woods and brushed metals that bring a polished, minimalist aesthetic, and juxtapose beautifully with modern furnishings for layered and characterful spaces.'

This trend extends to staircase ideas too, as Andy Guard, Creative Director at Roger Oates Design explains: 'Incorporating natural wood stair treads and balustrades in both natural and dark woods provides an extra level of depth and warmth. A stair runner is the ideal accompaniment to echo surrounding wood tones.'

4. Quiet luxury-inspired flooring (a.k.a marble)

'We expect quiet luxury, which was a major trend in both fashion and interiors throughout 2023, to continue to dominate interiors and flooring throughout 2024,' says Lorna Williams. 

'Thanks to its timeless appeal and quiet sophistication, this is a trend that never goes away and is just updated a little from season to season. For flooring that embraces quiet luxury, look to warming and sophisticated dark woods and stunning marbles that imbue interiors with a subtle luxurious finish and confident elegance.'

5. Colorful tiles

Colorful tiles are a great way to bring a splash of color into your home, especially through bathroom flooring. Interior designer Elizabeth Sims, founder of California-based CALAFIA Home Design  expects to see this trend embraced throughout the coming year: 

'I love the amount of creative tile options for flooring that are available now. Marble, mosaic, terrazzo, and terracotta are evocative of the intricate, colorful floors and streets found throughout Europe. Modern ceramic and cement tiles are available in so many colors and shapes that they can easily make flooring the only big accent a room needs to feel special.'

6. Rustic hardwood

Rustic decor is showing no signs of stopping in 2024, so it's no surprise to see rustic flooring continue to be embraced. Rustic flooring is all about imperfect natural wood that fully embraces daily wear and tear to contribute to its charm. 

This flooring trend can often also reflect the darker tones of wood to embrace a moody look, as interior designer Jill Norman, co-founder of Studio Mesa explains: 'Clients have been swaying away from the wide plank, oak hardwood trend that we've been seeing for many years towards narrower planks with darker, more saturated stains.'

7. Durable and practical options

As tempting as it is to opt for a highly trend-led type of flooring, practicality should always take precedence. Flooring is a costly aspect of home decor so it's important to consider how well it will last for years to come. Interior designers predict that flooring that requires less upkeep and can withstand heavy footfall will be a popular choice throughout 2024. 

'We see American hickory becoming popular for residential flooring in 2024,' says designer Maria Vassiliou of Maria Zoe Designs. 'With so many families asking for more durable, long-lasting materials to withstand the likes of children and pets, hickory can be an excellent choice with many varieties for character and color.'

Gaelle Dudley, interior designer and founder of GLDESIGN sees engineered flooring also rising in popularity this year, explaining: 'We have been doing a lot more projects which call for engineered flooring versus traditional hardwood. The upkeep is less and the look is the same. It’s incredible how far flooring has come and the options are endless! A character-grade white oak engineered floor is extremely durable for highly trafficked spaces and more pet and family-friendly than a softer hardwood.'

8. Layered rugs

As maximal decor continues to gain popularity in 2024, we're seeing this reflected through flooring styles, too. Layering rugs is a great way to achieve an eclectic and 'lived-in' look, experimenting with layering different colors and textures for added interest. It's also a great way to create a cozy feel in spaces such as bedrooms. 

'Recently, we’re seeing people overlay fitted carpet with colorful rugs, a rich, textured, layered look,' says Jodie Hatton, Design Manager at Brintons. 'A rug is a different kind of investment – you can move it around and have fun with it and sell it on.'

The same trend can be applied to staircases too, by opting to add a colorful runner on top of a neutral carpet to create a statement entryway. 'Using a bold, eye-catching stair runner adds a touch of personality and drama to the upstairs, offering impact when entering the house,' says Andy Guard.

Martin says that picking a rug color is a good way to determine and build a room's palette and coordinate a space.

'It also helps to position pieces in a room,' he says. 'Use the edge of a rug to align a sofa, for example, or the frame of a picture on the wall. So, where a rug may not necessarily be the focal point of a room, it will still quietly do the work, leaving the statement pieces to dance in the spotlight.'

Layering a rug over tiles adds an extra textured element; soft rugs such as Gisele's are highly complementary against stone or tiled floors.

'Tiles are increasingly being used as decorative pieces of art in the home,' Martin states. 'Be it your kitchen, bathroom, hallway, or even on the stairs, using tiles within any scheme shows off their beautiful textures and patterns while at once uplifting a space. Mixed media, including combinations of ceramic and stone, are becoming increasingly popular to create contemporary inspired geometric layouts.'
