• Material: I'd recommend investing in 100 per cent cotton, in either percale or sateen, or bamboo blends. Cotton percale is crisp and cool, so ideal for hot sleepers or stuffy dorm rooms with bad or no AC, while sateen is softer, heavier, and feels more luxurious, but can be slightly more difficult to clean.
• Avoid polyester and microfiber: These materials are undoubtedly budget-friendly, but can trap heat, pill easily, and cause night sweats. If you do need something more affordable, though, opt for microfiber that's high-quality and brushed for added breathability.
• Thread count: Don't get weighed down by worrying about thread count. For college, a thread count between 200 and 400 is perfect for balancing both durability and breathability.

The Nolah Evolution is extremely comfortable and a mattress you look forward to sleeping on each night. It has a highly supportive memory foam top that helps you get that cozy, sinking-into-your-bed feeling, without making you feel hot or stuck.

It helps keep your spine in alignment, but also gives target relief in certain sections of the mattress where you might otherwise feel too much pressure.

The mattress comes in multiple options for firmness, which is helpful for determining which mattress will suit you and your needs, including plush, luxury firm, or firm. I chose the middle option, with the cooling pillow top, which you can also opt in or out of.

The Nolah Evolution Mattress − Delivery, Unboxing and Setup

This mattress is pretty much ready for use right out of the box. The company notes that odors (known as off-gassing) can take up to 24 hours to dissipate, although I didn’t notice any.

You can opt in to or out of a delivery service that sets up the mattress for you. You can also select to have the delivery service carry the mattress to the right room for you, which is highly convenient and worth it if you’d struggle to do so yourself, as I would.

Once it’s set up, the mattress feels fresh and new, and I immediately noticed the highly raised areas on the mattress that make up the support top. This means the mattress is exceptionally bumpy compared to others at first glance, with raised parts of the topper − something that I came to appreciate when I realized how comfortable the topper is.

What It’s Like to Sleep on the Nolah Evolution Mattress

Pressure relief and support: Typically, I’d start to feel some joint pressure and even pain while falling asleep, particularly in my hips and back. This mattress eliminated that problem and helped me reduce the time it takes to fall asleep by about 10-30 minutes per night. This is because there was never any hip or back pain, even as a side and stomach sleeper, which can sometimes cause misalignment or extra pressure.

According to the brand, this is due to the “lumbar zone,” referring to five zones through the materials that help with weight redistribution, relieving pressure on the joints. The website shares that the “tri-zone foam” is a middle firm layer responsible for extra lumbar support, which keeps hips elevated and spine aligned in any sleep position, without sacrificing softness and flexibility near the shoulders. This all reflected my own experience with the bed completely.

Thermoregulation: Heat control in a mattress comes down to two things − just how far into the mattress you sink, which can cause you to feel hotter, and the materials themselves and their cooling abilities.

When you sleep on this mattress, you have a good amount of “sink in” feeling, allowing the mattress to come up around your sides a tiny bit, but it’s not so much that you feel engulfed by it. This has been a problem with some competitors I’ve tried. In addition, the fabric is cool and breathable, so it doesn’t make you hotter, which is helpful.

Motion Isolation: I tested the motion transfer both by observing how much I’m disturbed by my partner’s movement through the night, and also through a test with a large glass of water on the bed. In the water test, I pushed on the mattress near the water to see how much it moved, and if it spilled. I could apply a good amount of pressure and get pretty close to the water without impacting it, showing that the bed performs pretty well when it comes to motion transfer.

However, compared to some other beds, I did notice my partner moving periodically through the night, though it wasn’t enough to really fully wake me up. So, while the motion transfer isn’t perfect, it’s definitely a reasonable amount and shouldn’t impact your decision to buy this mattress.

Edge Support: There is a good amount of give on the edges of the bed that doesn’t fully reflect how supportive it is to sleep on the bed. So, if you are someone sleeping near the edge of the bed and/or sitting on the edge of the bed, you will notice the edge gives way, and you slip a bit on a downward incline.

Though I’m not an expert on the bed construction, I believe this is because more of the support is focused on those lumbar areas and pressure relief, while the rest of the bed is a bit more forgiving and flexible. So, areas around the head and shoulders and the bed edges aren’t quite as stiff and sturdy as the middle.

This is a good thing, unless you are sleeping right on the edge. However, it did dissuade me from sitting on the edge of the bed for any tasks.

Materials: There are eight layers of materials in the hybrid mattress, from the top cotton cover down to the high-density base foam. The materials are GREENGUARD Gold-certified, indicating compliance with emissions standards. They are also Certi-PUR-US-certified, meaning the mattress is free from heavy metals, retardants, and ozone depleters. Finally, the mattress doesn’t use any fiberglass in the materials, according to Nolah’s website.

Price: Finally, this mattress, though not a budget pick, is highly affordable compared to some competitors. This means people who want to invest in a great mattress but don’t want to spend money on more expensive luxury mattress brands might find their sweet spot here.

Who the Nolah Evolution Mattress Would Suit

The Nolah is surprisingly great for stomach sleepers − which is not the norm. Many mattresses cause stomach sleepers to end up with an arch in their lower back and an achy body by morning. On the contrary, this mattress helps maintain correct positioning regardless of which way you sleep.

The Nolah Evolution is also great for side sleepers, thanks to that pressure relief feature and the way it eliminates pain in the hips, knees, and elsewhere. This is one of the most notable features of using the bed, and side sleepers who have aches and pains will notice the difference.

Finally, the mattress is perfect for anyone wanting to invest in a mattress of luxurious quality and solid construction but not spend a fortune doing so.

My Verdict After Sleeping on the Nolah Evolution for 30 Nights

In the process of testing this mattress and others, I’ve come to know quickly which will go the distance when it comes to comfort, and which will end up with a disappointing lump in the middle a few months in and grouchy people who didn’t sleep well.

Three years post-Succession finale, we've exhausted our reserves of exclaiming 'quiet luxury,' but if the phrase hadn't been so wildly overused, it's one that absolutely would apply to Brooklinen's newly upgraded Luxe Sateen bedding.

The Japanese practice known as 'Kaizen,' which translates to 'improvement,' or 'change for the better,' has helped me quickly make a significant improvement in the way I sleep.

The main benefits for better rest, I've found, have come from a realization that even the smallest changes can have a real impact, and I don't have to have a major behavioural or habit overhaul to see positive results, making this a really low-stress method you can quickly implement at home.

From reading before bed to reducing my screen time overall, these little switches have proven easy to adopt and stick to compared to a complete overhaul. Here's why I recommend the Japanese Kaizen Method as an easy way to sleep better.

How to Use This Technique for Sleep

To fall asleep fast − and stay in a restful state − bringing in small, steady improvements which work for you, such as starting a bedtime reading or journaling routine, is a simple way to help you unwind, drift off faster, and rest more deeply all night.

As resident Sleep Editor, I decided to apply this mindful method to my evening routine, and was delighted to fall asleep faster than before, without wakeups, despite the current stifling heatwave in my region.

Personally, I've found that running and yoga in the evening help me sleep better, and pair perfectly with reading my current book club pick in bed as I wind down, which is definitely my top recommendation for screen-free evening relaxation.

'You have to find something that works for you that calms your mind and relaxes your body,' explains Hannah. 'Breath work and mindfulness are great if that works for you, but find something different if they don’t.

'Reading a book can work, just make sure that it’s not a page turner, as this can create excitement and push you to stay awake.'

This is something I can definitely relate to − I planned to just read a few pages last night and ended up staying up and finishing my whole book. It did help me sleep in the end, though, so it's all about balance.

'Similarly, TVs are the same; if they help you switch off, then great, just make sure you are watching something that you have seen before, so you are not forcing yourself to stay awake for the ending,' adds Hannah.

More generally, says Hannah, try something for a week, maybe two, and see if it helps. If not, pivot to something else that does work, to take advantage of this little-known Japanese sleep secret.

I had high hopes for the Saatva Rx mattress, having tested other products from their range in the past that I found to be well-made and comfortable.

Delivery, Unboxing, and Set-Up

My Saatva Rx mattress arrived via complimentary white-glove delivery. Two delivery people carried the mattress up the stairs and into my bedroom. They removed the old mattress from my bed frame and put the new one in place.

There was no off-gassing smell (which indicates there are no volatile organic compounds in the materials) and no need to wait for the mattress to expand before sleeping on it.

I appreciated the included delivery and white-glove set-up because the mattress is very heavy.

What It's Like Sleeping On the Saatva Rx Mattress

Pressure relief and comfort: The Saatva Rx is designed for people like me with chronic back pain. Additionally, I fall asleep on my side and often wake up with hip pain when testing mattresses. My hip pain has all but disappeared since I started sleeping on the Saatva Rx.

This mattress is highly responsive to movement and does an outstanding job of contouring to my body, keeping me comfortable all night long. I am a very active sleeper, usually changing my sleep position several times throughout the night. That makes it difficult to find a mattress that works well for me, but the Saatva Rx stands out among other mattresses I’ve tested. Thanks to its impressive pressure relief and support, it keeps me comfortable in any position, making it perfect for combination sleepers like me and couples who may sleep in different positions.

The mattress also strikes the right balance between firmness and plushness. It’s firm enough so that I no longer wake up with back pain, but don’t feel as though I am sleeping on a hard board. Other mattresses struggle to find this balance.

Thermoregulation: A common complaint with memory foam mattresses is that they run hot. As a result, people often search for a way to cool them down. Fortunately, I didn’t have that problem with the Saatva Rx, and it kept me significantly cooler than any other mattress I’ve tested.

Although it’s not a specialty cooling mattress, the Saatva Rx is designed to promote cooling throughout the night, and includes a layer of cooling gel-infused foam that helps disperse body heat, and individually-wrapped coils to promote airflow. The mattress is also covered with an organic, breathable cotton cover that helps keep the mattress’s surface cool.

Motion isolation: To test the motion isolation of the Saatva Rx, I filled a glass almost to the top with water, then placed an 18.5-pound weight next to the glass. Although a few drops spilled out, the glass barely moved.

The water-glass test is consistent with my experience sharing the bed with my husband for more than a month and hardly feeling him toss and turn − his movements during the night haven’t disturbed me at all.

Additionally, my husband tends to get up earlier than me and his movements usually wake me. However, I’ve slept more soundly through his early starts, which is due, at least in part, to the Saatva Rx’s great motion isolation.

Pocket-sprung mattresses tend to perform better than memory foam or hybrid mattresses in motion-isolation tests, but the Saatva Rx held its own in this category.

Edge support: The edge support on the Saatva Rx is also excellent. When I sat on the edge of the mattress, I did not feel as though I would slip or fall off. When I get out of bed in the middle of the night, I feel secure when I sit on the edge of the mattress for a moment before standing up.

As an additional test, I placed a full glass of water on the edge of the mattress and set an 18.5-pound weight next to it. The glass noticeably tipped more here than it did when it was in the center of the mattress.

Nevertheless, the edge support on the Saatva Rx is significantly better than that of other mattresses I have tested, where the glass of water nearly tips over when performing the same test.

Weight bearing: Along with the other areas tested, seeing how well a mattress bears weight is an important part of how we test mattresses here at Homes & Gardens. To see how well the Saatva Rx bears weight, I placed an 18.5-pound weight in the center of the mattress. The weight barely sank into the mattress at all. Even more impressive is that the mattress rebounded very quickly, in about 2.5 seconds.

Materials: How comfortable a mattress is depends heavily on how the mattress is made and the materials used. The Saatva Rx has seven layers, which help address different needs. The sleep surface is a breathable, organic cotton cover with lumbar zone quilting.

Under the cover is a layer of gel-infused memory foam that helps relieve pressure. Next is a layer of micro-coils surrounded by a memory-foam-like layer of proprietary Rx Weave-Tech foam. Together, these layers help the mattress cradle the body, provide additional pressure relief, and keep the mattress cool.

Finally, hundreds of individually wrapped coils help improve the mattress’s durability and assist with pressure relief and motion isolation. The final layer is a high-density foam base that provides stability. The premium materials used in the Saatva Rx result in one of the best mattresses I have ever tested for comfort and functionality.

Price: The Saatva Rx is not the most inexpensive mattress on the market. However, I think the premium materials, combined with outstanding performance across all areas, make the mattress well worth the price.

Who Would The Saatva Rx Mattress Suit?

• Those with back problems: In my experience, the mattress delivered on its claims of relieving back pain. It also helped with other aches and pains, including persistent hip pain. Anyone with back pain or who wakes with aches and pains elsewhere should consider this mattress if they have the budget. Although the Saavta Rx is not a budget mattress, waking up pain-free may be worth the high price tag for those suffering from chronic pain.
• Hot sleepers: Although the Saavta Rx is not marketed as a cooling mattress, it has cooling properties that help prevent heat from being trapped. Cooler mattresses also come at a higher price, but anyone with a sizable budget who is tired of waking up hot may find that splurging on Saavta Rx is money well spent.

My Verdict after Sleeping on the Saatva Rx for Five Weeks

After sleeping on the Saavta Rx for more than a month, I highly recommend it to those who can stomach the high price tag. Anyone seeking an orthopedic-type mattress for back pain and those who tend to sleep hot, but want the comfort of a hybrid mattress made with memory foam, should consider investing in this mattress.

For me, waking pain-free and cool is well worth the price. The Saavta Rx is also a good investment for combo-sleepers and couples who have different sleep styles or patterns.

1. Don't Just Open a Window; Create a Vacuum

One of the very simplest ways to cool your bedroom space cleverly involves using one of the best fans and opening your window to maximize airflow. Place the fan outward in one window to suck the warm air out, and open a window on the shaded side of your house to draw cool air in.

Drew Miller, Sleep Expert with Sit ’n Sleep, explains, 'This setup helps create airflow that pushes hot air out while pulling cooler air in, improving circulation and preventing heat from getting trapped indoors. Better airflow helps your body release heat more efficiently.'

Another easy way to keep your home cool is to close curtains and blinds on South or West-facing windows by 10 am.

Dr. Jordan Burns, Licensed Chiropractor and Sleep Health Expert for Amerisleep, explains, 'A significant part of nighttime overheating occurs during the daytime, with direct sun rays causing heat buildup inside the house.

'By covering up windows early enough, you can prevent excess heat formation. It's always easier to maintain coolness than to bring it back after it's gone.'

'As with other aspects of sleep, it all comes down to controlling the microclimate,' says Dr. Jordan. 'Materials used for bedclothes influence whether the heat is trapped or dissipated. For example, thick fabric and silky finishes usually don't allow heat and moisture to escape, which is why switching to cotton or percale may be beneficial.'

When it comes to finding the right mattress firmness, I've spoken with a wealth of experts on how to determine it and what to avoid. But, on a recent trip to Vispring's famed showroom, I learned an unexpected rule from the supplier to royalty that's changed the way I'll buy mattresses forever.

The key, as the Showroom Manager Andrew Soule explained during the tour in the heart of London and just a mile from Buckingham Palace, has less to do with what you might think suits you and more to do with your body weight.

As the official mattress suppliers for all suites and cabins on the Titanic, the rooms at The Dorchester in London, and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, and even a King's Award to their name, there's no doubt that the experts at Vispring know a thing or two about finding your best mattress.

'The right tension should gently cradle the body, supporting the spine in correct alignment for a truly restful night’s sleep,' continues Clare. 'While personal preference plays a role, we recommend using body weight as a key guide to finding the best fit.

'Every Vispring mattress is defined by two elements: Tension and feel. Tension, created by the springs, provides the support your body needs, while feel comes from layers of natural materials such as wool, cotton, horsehair, and silk, which create a soft, breathable, and luxurious surface. Together, they work in harmony to deliver both comfort and support.'

So, to help you sleep better and determine which mattress will suit you, as a general guide, Clare advises that Soft tension suits those up to 154 lbs (70 kg), Medium from 154 to 225 (70-102 kg), Firm from 225 to 280 (102 to 127 kg), and Extra Firm for those over 280 lbs (127 kg).

'This approach works because the level of support a mattress provides is directly influenced by how your body weight interacts with the springs,' advises Clare. 'This allows the mattress to distribute weight evenly and maintain correct spinal alignment throughout the night.'

'By selecting the appropriate tension for your weight, the springs can compress and respond as intended,' adds Clare. 'If a mattress is too soft, the body can sink excessively and fall out of alignment; if it’s too firm, it won’t contour enough to support natural curves.

'Choosing the right tension ensures the springs and natural fillings work in harmony, delivering balanced support, comfort, and minimal disturbance as you move,' which is particularly important if you share your bed with a partner.

How This Works to Offset Common Sleep-Related Aches and Pains

Even the very best sleep positions are often not enough to combat sleep-related aches and pains entirely.

But, as Clare emphasizes, 'Choosing the correct mattress tension can play a significant role in alleviating common sleep-related aches and pains. When the tension is suited to your body weight, the mattress is able to respond as intended, contouring to your shape, supporting the spine in proper alignment, and distributing weight evenly across the surface.

'This is particularly important around key pressure points such as the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A mattress that is too soft may allow the body to sink and strain these areas, while one that is too firm may not provide enough contouring to relieve pressure. The right balance helps the body rest in a more natural, supported position.'

Of course, as Clare appreciates, a mattress is not a medical solution. But, she concludes, 'Selecting the correct tension can make a meaningful difference in reducing everyday discomfort and improving overall sleep quality.'

As I recently found out, Japan is a place where everything just feels better. The streets are cleaner, the food is more flavorful − and the pillows are cooler.

Putting aside memory foam, down, and synthetic materials, every pillow I slept on in Japan was defined by a distinctive layer of buckwheat husks. They were surprisingly comfortable and supportive, with impressive breathability and cooling properties.

After just a few nights, it didn't take long for me to realize that my previous assumption of what makes the best pillows had changed drastically. Now, I'm looking to buy one for my own bedroom back home.

Centuries-Old Japanese Sobakawa Pillows Are the Secret to Cool Pillows All Night

There's no doubt that pillows are taken seriously in Japan − I even stayed in a hotel in Kyoto that featured an entire pillow wall for selecting your desired loft, fill, and fluffiness, with a 'Ladies only' section and eight different types to choose from, including one made from Japanese Hinoki cypress wood. But it was the buckwheat pillows, also known as Sobakawa, that I grew to love.

Admittedly, during the first part of my 15-day trip around Japan, I wasn't always even sure what it was that was filling my pillows with small, hard lumps, and I thought they were likely the same beans that you'd usually find in a beanbag. It was only when I kept finding myself sleeping so comfortably, and waking without any neck pain, even in my side-sleeping position, that I decided to look into it.

As Maiko Shimazaki, the founder of Revitalist15, a New York-based wellness brand rooted in Japanese relaxation rituals, explains, 'Sobakawa pillows are traditional Japanese pillows filled with buckwheat hulls. They are a great alternative to conventional pillows and may provide better sleep for those who prefer a firmer feel, sleep hot, or struggle with allergies.'

She's right − the husks allow air to circulate to keep the pillow dry, helping to keep a bed cool in summer, and warm in winter. For that reason, they're suitable for year-round use.

Those hypoallergenic and natural qualities are important, too. Down may feel luxurious, but it does come with ethical concerns for animal welfare (a reason I always avoid it) and is often not best recommended due to its ability to trap dust, too.

And, while synthetic alternatives may be cruelty-free, suitable for vegans, and usually far more affordable, the polyester, polyester fiberfill, or memory foam filling comes with a significant carbon footprint, and isn't biodegradable, either.

In contrast, natural Sokabawa pillows are highly sustainable, eco-friendly, made from natural, renewable materials, and they also last significantly longer than other alternatives.

'Buckwheat hulls do not compress or break down like down, foam, or synthetic fiber fills,' adds Maiko. 'As a result, sobakawa pillows provide consistent support throughout the night and over the years,' meaning you can use them for far longer before your pillow begins to ruin your sleep quality.

There's just one drawback to consider, highlights Maiko, but it's not something I ever noticed in my experience, which is that Sokobawa pillows are firmer, and therefore not suitable for those who prefer softer pillows.

However, I actually only ever opt for extremely soft, flat pillows, and never found them too firm or too lofty, and, in any case, you can always remove some of the filling to find your preferred height.

Instead, much like how the Japanese traditional futons I slept on kept me comfortable and supported all night long, despite my initial reservations, my experience with Sokabawa pillows had me sleeping better than ever before.

The difference is between those floral scents that make you feel enlivened, like sweet jasmine, botanicals, orange blossom, and any mint-infused blends, and those that subtly float into the background.

Certified Aromatherapist Amy Galper explains, 'How an aroma makes you feel is because of the different aromatic molecules that they are composed of. When the scent detector nerve endings in our noses get triggered by one of these molecules, it sends a signal to the emotional part of our brain that influences our mindset and behavior.

'So, smelling flowers has been known to uplift us, balance our mood, and make us feel good. Those emotions can invite us to feel more “alive” and “awake."'

Similarly, she continues, scents that come from the needles of trees, like pine, cypress, and juniper, have similar molecules. 'They uplift our mood, make us feel more positive, and can help focus.'

Therefore, while all of these scents might be among the best scents to boost productivity in a home office or to make an entryway more luxurious, using them in your sleep space is a bedroom scenting mistake to avoid, and can seriously throw off your bedroom Feng Shui, too.

'On the other hand, atoms that come from the actual wood of the tree, like cedar wood, rosewood, sandalwood, are known to be heavier and more grounding, and the molecules in these oils trigger the relaxation mode in our minds and bodies,' advises Amy.

One of the fundamental rules of Feng Shui, when it comes to the bedroom space, is a distinct lack of mirrors. The reasoning is simple – a mirror reflecting your bedspace can drain your energy, and invite unwanted energy into your bedroom.

That's why, when recently staying in a ryokan, or traditional inn, in Japan, I was intrigued to see a particularly clever Feng Shui feature: The full-length mirror was hidden behind a dedicated door, easily opened when needed, and closed away ahead of bedtime.

According to experts, it's one of the best ways to follow the all-important Feng Shui mirror rules, without compromising on convenience. Here's why.

This Clever Mirror Feng Shui Feature Promotes Better Rest

As Suzanne Butler, Feng Shui Consultant and founder at Harmonising Energies, explains, 'In Feng Shui, mirrors are considered powerful tools that direct and double the energy, or Qi, of what is reflected. While they are useful for making a room look larger during the day, they can become "active" disruptors at night.'

That's not the only reason that it's important to consider where mirrors should be placed in a bedroom for Feng Shui, either. Suzanne Roynon, Feng Shui Expert, Interiors Therapist, and Founder of Interiors Therapy, adds, 'Mirrors amplify the energy in a room, which can lead to restlessness and poor quality sleep.'

Additionally, she warns, a mirror is said to invite infidelity in a relationship – 'bringing in the energy of a third or fourth person in the reflection' – and can also encourage ghosts and spirits into the room, all of which interfere with restful sleep.

So, after recently researching and talking to experts about bedroom Feng Shui earlier this year, I was particularly interested (and impressed) to see the cleverly hidden mirror at our hotel in Japan.

It's an easy way to avoid any negative effects of the mirror, but it made getting ready for dinner and in the morning easy, as I didn't have to leave the room entirely to see my reflection. And, throughout the night, I didn't encounter any energy shifts or disruption as I slept, either.

'By closing the door on a wall-mounted mirror, you effectively "pause" that active energy, allowing the room to become a true Yin sanctuary,' advises Suzanne Butler.

Alternative, Easy Ways to Cover Mirrors In Your Bedroom Space

Of course, not every bedroom space includes a mirror with a dedicated door. But, to enjoy all the beauty and benefits of Japanese-inspired interiors, it doesn't have to.

'You can still achieve the same results with methods to mask the reflection,' says Suzanne Butler.

• Decorative textiles: Drape a high-quality silk scarf or a linen throw over a floor-length mirror. 'This adds a soft, tactile element to the room that absorbs rather than reflects,' she explains, though it can make a space look cluttered and messy,
• Pivot: If you have a freestanding mirror, simply rotate it to face the wall or a corner before getting into bed.
• Folding screens: Placing a decorative folding screen in front of a fixed mirror to hide the glass and add a touch of flair to your space. I recommend the Japanese-inspired RISÖR Room Divider, available at IKEA, for this.
• Frosted window film: 'If you already have mirror wardrobes and changing the doors simply isn’t practical, frosting the mirror is one option, self-adhesive decals are another,' says Suzanne Roynon. 'I’ve also seen a client place a curtain track above sliding mirror doors with a beautiful full-length curtain, which is closed across them each night. It’s a simple and very effective solution.' As morning nears, the cortisol hormone is released to aid in easier waking. That's why having more natural light aids waking.

To easily achieve this cortisol-regulating benefit in your sleep environment, regardless of your location, you can switch your normal bedside lamp bulbs for smart ones and alter the hue to something more beneficial. Dr. Andrew Gall is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Hope College and a Neuroscientist who studies the neural mechanisms and functions of sleep, including how light affects circadian rhythms.

This is especially important because our sleep-wake patterns need to be aligned with the sun and darkness to have maximal benefits for us.'

Restorative sleep is vital to long-term wellbeing as it allows the body to do important healing work overnight, removing or fixing damaged cells, reducing inflammation, processing memories, and much more.

Dr Gall advises that using other forms of traditional alarm clocks that wake us up at a specific, allotted time do so without regard for the sleep state we are in.

'We experience the most benefits of sleep when we wake up directly from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, because our brain activity during REM sleep is more similar to our brain activity during wakefulness,' continues Dr. Gall. 'You may have noticed that sometimes when your alarm clock goes off, you immediately hit snooze and feel very groggy.

'This is likely because your traditional alarm clock woke you up during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is a time when our brain activity mismatches that during wakefulness.'

Having just arrived back from two weeks in Japan, so many things amazed me. From the culture to the food, every aspect of the country was a complete delight – and none more so, as a Sleep Editor, than the beds.

In general, our city-based hotel bedrooms in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto came in a range of different shapes and sizes of small. But when we stayed in two traditional ryokans, or inns, along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, tiny city spaces with plush Western mattresses gave way to expansive tatami mats, sliding shoji doors, and traditional futons, rolled out at bedtime.

As someone who spends their days researching the best mattresses money can buy, I was more than intrigued to spend the night on something far harder and flatter – and honestly found that I slept better than ever before. Here's what I learned about why luxurious mattresses aren't always needed to guarantee a great night's sleep.

I Had the Best Sleep of My Life on a Traditional Japanese Futon

Maybe it was the hours spent hiking and looking around temples, but kicking off my wooden sandals and flopping down on my traditional Japanese futon in the complete silence and darkness of our ryokan in the small hot spring town of Kawayu Onsen, sleep found me almost instantly.

I'd been skeptical – with so little between me and the floor, would this humble futon really be enough to support my side sleep position, and keep me comfortable all night long?

The answer, unequivocally, was yes. Come morning, I'd slept uninterrupted throughout the night and woke without any of the usual aches, pains, or typical signs you're sleeping on a bad mattress. Luckily, you don't have to go all the way to Japan to enjoy it, with Walmart stocking Japanese floor futons affordably.

I found the same thing the next night, when we stopped at Hotel Urashima, high on a hill in Kii-Katsuura. After our table and chairs were pushed aside, and futons laid out, I, once again, had a stellar night's sleep, and felt well rested once morning rolled back around, with no pain or stiffness to speak of.

Interested in finding out exactly why, I spoke with Dr. Ron Miller, a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy at Pursuit Physical Therapy. He explains, 'Futons provide a firm, evenly-distributed surface that helps keep the spine in neutral alignment and doesn’t allow for hips or shoulders to sink unevenly. I often find that back pain is linked to excessive sag in the mattress, especially in lumbar spine comfort.

'An arguably tighter support base can take some pressure off this during the night. Moreover, sleeping near the ground inherently limits the strange twisting movements that may help those with low back pain, given sacroiliac joint irritation.

'It isn’t about hard versus soft but maintaining a steady load that the body can predict and respond to.'

The common misconception that sleeping on a harder, flatter surface, like that of a futon mattress, will result in a bad back is simply not true (in most cases). After all, there's a reason they're so common in Japan – a nation that's consistently ranked as one of the healthiest and longest-living worldwide.

'Futons promote daily mobility, balance, and strength, resulting in an increased awareness of your body and the ability to move more efficiently,' adds Dr. Miller. 'They relieve pressure points, especially for back sleepers, which means less morning stiffness because joints don’t “sink and stiffen” overnight.'

In any case, I'm sold, and genuinely would consider a futon mattress for when I move later in the year, if I didn't already have a Japanese-style bed, complete with tatami mats, ready to move with me.

What I have learned, though, is that you don't need a plush, expensive mattress filled with layers of foam, fibers, and springs, even if you suffer from common aches and pains. Instead, sometimes, the simplest solutions bring the serenest sleep.

Your bedside table arguably works harder than any other surface in your bedroom. It's where you place your bedtime book, mug of tea, or a thoughtful trinket or plant that gives you joy – but all too often, this space can end up cluttered and chaotic.

To Feng Shui experts, though, it's not the visual noise that's the problem, per se. Instead, there's one category of items they urge you must remove from your bedside table this April: Electronics.

It's not just about curating a more serene sleep space, either. Doing so can also help you to sleep better, by supporting deeper rest, and helping to make both falling asleep and waking in the morning easier.

Why You Should Remove Electronics From Your Bedside Table This April

As Beverly Biehl, Founder of The Intuitive Interior, says, most bedside tables have room for a lamp, a book, lip balm, a glass of water, and perhaps a dream journal, such as the JUBTIC Dream Journal, available at Amazon. But, she warns, 'All too many now host a laptop, an e-reader, and at least one phone.

'The e-reader isn't connected to the internet, so it can stay, but the laptop and the phone – especially the phone – must find a new place to live overnight.'

She explains that the main reason for this, in terms of Feng Shui, is that they are energetically noisy. 'All of that WiFi-connecting and text and email pinging literally acts as miniature finger-pokes, trying to get your attention when you are attempting to sleep,' and making it far more difficult to fall asleep fast.

'Even with the Do Not Disturb feature turned on, many will still notice when someone texts. The intended signal is still there, even while muted. WiFi works when there is a constant back and forth with the cell towers, and texts and emails are another form of this electronic back and forth. Our bodies, being largely electrical processors, get overheated when exposed to this for hours at a time.'

This isn't so much of a problem during the day. As Beverly adds, we can cool off by getting up to use the bathroom, grabbing a snack, or walking outside.

'At night, though, we are supposed to be sleeping for eight hours at a stretch,' she advises. 'If we have all of this electrical activity happening, our brain still overheats, even as it's trying to process all of the information it downloaded during the day. It takes a lot of energy to sort, sift, and decide what to keep and what to file away or purge!

'This is why most people sleep better in a cooler environment after all. So when we have these highly 'yang' items next to us, we add heat just at the moment when our body and brain need 'yin,' and don't get me started about how much yang a television in the bedroom adds! Yikes!'

Beverly isn't the only Feng Shui consultant to feel strongly about electronics in the bedroom space, either, and why they're certainly items to never store on your nightstand.

Katherine Troyer, Feng Shui Expert and Home Energetics Practitioner at My Home Energetics, adds, 'From a Feng Shui and nervous system perspective, the bedside area should support deep rest and a gentle transition into the day.

'Phones introduce constant stimulation and subtly signal alertness, even when they are silent. When the first thing you see in the morning is a screen, your brain immediately shifts into information-processing mode rather than body awareness.'

What to Do Instead

Fortunately, the fix is simple. 'The solution is the creation of a bedtime ritual for your phone and laptop, and any other Wi-Fi-enabled device,' advises Beverly. 'Offer them a recharging station of their own, so they feel honored and respected,' though keep this out of the bedroom, of course, and give them a 'good wipe-down with a cleaning cloth, just as you wash your own face.' Additionally, Beverly suggests using an analog clock radio that has a battery backup to make sure you don't miss your alarm. The ROBERTS Revival Rest Bluetooth Clock Radio, available at Selfridges, is currently top of my wish list.

'Give up the idea that your bed is a good office to do your work from,' continues Beverly. 'It's not. You end up with terrible posture, back pain, and zero sleep hygiene. Creating a yin space is best achieved when the space is dark, cool, and uncluttered, especially under the bed if possible,' which will also help you to avoid falling foul to the popular underbed storage habit that's the leading cause of hidden mattress mold.

'I also recommend keeping a glass of water beside the bed,' adds Katherine. 'Instead of reaching for notifications, you begin the day by giving something back to your body.'

As the resident Sleep Editor here at Homes & Gardens, I've learned that one of the easiest ways to sleep better is by maintaining the ideal room temperature – somewhere between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

But the warmer months of spring and summer tend to be the busiest, and between working, socializing, and hosting, more often than not, you may find yourself forgetting to switch on your fan to cool your sleep space to the optimum temperature before bedtime.

Sleep expert Dr. Saema Tahir, M.D., shares, 'The best temperature for sleeping is between 60-67°F. This range helps support our natural drop in core body temperature that is necessary for falling asleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep.

'Heat disrupts sleep significantly. Falling asleep requires a natural drop in core body temperature, and when the environment is too hot, it is more difficult not only to fall asleep, but to stay asleep as well.

'Hot environments decrease deep and REM sleep, which are both important for restorative, healthy sleep. Heat also causes sweating, restlessness, and awakenings throughout the night. If a sleep disorder is present, heat during sleep can worsen insomnia, sleep apnea, and strain on the heart.'

For that reason, Dr. Joseph Dzierzewski, PhD, from the National Sleep Foundation, recommends using a smart plug to automatically drop your bedroom temperature before bed.

'The basic idea is pairing a smart plug with a portable air conditioner or a fan and then setting it on a schedule so your room starts cooling down automatically about 60 to 90 minutes before your bedtime,' he explains. 'That timing mirrors your body's own natural temperature drop, which helps you fall asleep faster.'

Additionally, Dr. Jordan Burns, D.C., sleep health expert for Amerisleep, highlights the cost-effective benefits of using a smart plug, explaining, 'Using a smart plug is one way to automate your sleep space without investing in an expensive smart home device,' he explains. This will not only ensure your bedroom is set to your ideal sleeping temperature before getting into bed, but also help you to save money at home, too.

Now that spring is here, days are longer, lighter, and brighter. While this may be prematurely waking you up in the morning, so too can spring allergies, like dust, dander, and pollen.

For that reason, there's one simple switch that air quality experts suggest making this season – and it's as easy as swapping your curtains out for shutters.

Not only will this keep allergies at bay, but doing so also has the added benefits of keeping your sleep space darker and helping to maintain the optimum temperature for better sleep, working hand in hand with the best cooling mattress topper.

Why Experts Recommend Switching Curtains to Shutters This Spring

Here, air quality experts explain why curtains might be contributing to any air quality mistakes you're making at home, and why spring is the perfect time to make the change.

As Rick Hoskins, HVAC, air quality expert, and CEO at Filter King, explains, though curtains are a classic choice when it comes to bedroom window treatments, they are, unfortunately, a magnet for dust and allergens.

'Compared to other fabric surfaces in a home, they’re rarely cleaned, so dust continues to build up,' he says. 'Plus, curtains produce static electricity, so all the dust particles stick to them. Even the most powerful HVAC system and return duct will not be able to dislodge them from the curtains.

'Over time, this can have a noticeable effect on the air quality inside a house. Most people will try to clean their carpets and furniture upholstery to make it better, but the hidden culprit is often the curtains.'

And, even if you know how to wash and care for curtains and drapes, a common problem can be more to do with timing, more specifically, knowing how often you should wash curtains.

For that reason, Eli Zimmer, CEO of Luxaire HVAC Services, says, 'Air-quality-wise, shutters are generally better than curtains, because they don't trap as much dust, pollen, or other airborne particles.

'This is because shutters are made from a solid material – usually something like wood – whereas curtains are made with fabric. Fabric is porous and has fibers that can trap a lot of particles in the air.

'So, with shutters, especially if you stay on top of dusting them, usually there are fewer particles accumulated that might negatively impact your sleep due to impacting your breathing.'

Ryan Osterkamp, owner at Quality Comfort Home Services, agrees, and urges you to think of how quickly dust, hair and dirt build up on your bedsheets and blankets, and how your curtains will hold onto dust and allergens in the same way, particularly as people don't typically tend to wash their curtains nearly as often as they wash, dry, and care for their bed linen.

'It's also not as easy to clean curtains as shutters, as shutters can just be wiped down instead of going through the laundry or getting vacuumed,' he adds. 'Shutters offer better insulation than curtains, as well. Uncomfortable nighttime temperatures can mess with the quality of your sleep, even if you don't realize they are.'

In fact, the perfect thermostat setting for sleep is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and, as Ryan highlights, shutters make this far easier to maintain.

There's one more benefit, too – shutters are an easy way to make a bedroom darker.

Livvi DiCicco, certified sleep science coach at Sleepopolis, says, 'I am sensitive to light when I sleep, and have found that room darkening shutters are a game changer. They seal out all light. Room darkening curtains still let in some light around the edges. Plus, the shutters don't inhibit airflow like curtains do.'

There are just a couple of things to consider before you make the switch, though. 'On the flip side, most shutters are more expensive than curtains, especially if you have them professionally installed,' continues Livvi. 'Their installation process also means you can't just swap them out like curtains.'

Other Ways to Improve Air Quality for Better Sleep

If you aren't quite ready, or don't have the budget, to switch your curtains to shutters this spring, there are, luckily, several other ways to improve air quality indoors.

First of all, recommends Rick, 'Replacing a home's HVAC filters can make an enormous improvement to air quality. Most people forget about their filters, but really, they should be replaced every three months.

'They're very affordable, easy to change, and can make a night-and-day difference in a home's air quality.'

You may also choose to invest in one of the best air purifiers that fits your budget.

'My husband has some pretty heavy-duty allergies,' says Livvi. 'Therefore, we started using an air purifier in our bedroom. The Dyson purifier [available at Dyson] is fantastic, but it comes with Dyson prices. I am a big fan of the Levoit air purifier,' available at Amazon.

For another option, our Home Tech Editor, Dan Fauzi, who has asthma and allergies, rated the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier, also available at Amazon, the best on test, and has been using it in their own home for over a year. During this time, they have seen a 90% reduction in flares.

Additionally, says Sean Holtom, controller at Top Hat Home Comfort Services, 'It also helps to keep humidity in check. Alternatively, and most affordably, Eli also suggests keeping your bedroom door open as much as possible during the day, and regularly opening your window, even if just for a few minutes, which are both 'beneficial because they improve ventilation in your room,' he says.

I was recently inspired to swap my heavier winter insert with this cool one from IKEA because it was also this brand that saw me through the coldest months with hotel-style comfort.

So, of course when it was time to pack away our heavier bedding, I turned to IKEA once again for an affordable spring sleep reset. I’m so glad I did.

What Happened When I Tested the GRÄSROTSFLY

In a nutshell, I now fall asleep quickly, don’t wake up drenched in sweat, and sleep till my alarm for a lack of overheating disturbing me early in the morning. It's all down to this insert.

Of course, the cooling effect of the silky lyocell cover, and the vegan filler (90% polyester / 10% viscose, which increases the item’s thermoregulation qualities) has helped deliver the perfect spring sleep experience.

I found it interesting as well that I didn’t wake up cold at any point either. It’s safe to wash and dry in your machine at home, and so thin, I was able to load some towels alongside it in the morning and found it air-dried by late afternoon over our stair railing. I didn’t hang it outside to air dry to avoid pollen sticking to it and causing allergies and sniffling overnight.

I also ran it on another wash cycle and through the dryer to check if it would shrink, bunch or otherwise get ruined, and there was zero negative impact. The item is actually deemed suitable by IKEA for use in inns and B&Bs for its robust construction which withstand high volumes of washes.

It’s machine-washable at 140°F, a temperature that kills dust mites.

For cool, comfortable nights, look no further. This is the affordable cooling bedding savior for spring and summer.

Under it, there will be no sweating or chills: It gives that sleeping without a cover light-as-air feeling without the achey neck and back in the morning that comes from going without.
