I have noticed, from designer spaces (Heidi Caillier has become my go-to for dreamy color inspiration) to the hotels and restaurants I have been to this year (I just got back from a stay in Beata Heuman's Hotel de la Boetie in Paris and stayed in a dark blue color-drenched space), more exciting things are happening with color. Rooms are drenched in deep reds, skirting painted in vivid greens, ceilings plastered in blue limewash.

Among this exciting movement in color trends, my white walls are starting to look a bit sad. So when I saw Anne Hathaway's two-tone entryway, I had found the color inspiration I needed.

While I do love the look of a color-drenched room, especially one that's totally in a rich burgundy, I am not quite ready to commit to the look yet. This two-tone space makes using a deeper color more approachable, keeping the space light and open while also embracing a moodier hue. This two-tone look can work really well in smaller spaces too, as it will guide the eye upwards, making the space feel loftier.

In terms of paint colors to recreate the look, I am testing out a few samples to recreate a similar look in my own bedroom. Inspired by Hathaway's entryway, I want to take a slightly cozier look, taking the burgundy up the walls and going for an earthy pink on the ceiling. For the deep hue, I would recommend Farrow & Ball's Etruscan Red, and for the pink, I am going slightly more orange-toned with Ointment Pink.

Living in a tiny apartment, I had made peace with the fact that outdoor hosting would come with its challenges – particularly when it came to eating, socializing, and relaxing in the exact same space. Just as I would prefer to keep my dining table separate from my sofa indoors, it just didn't seem possible to keep them apart on my terrace, until Anne Hathaway provided the solution.

The actress, along with her husband, jewelry designer Adam Shulman, and Jeffrey Erb Landscape Design, intelligently zoned their former balcony garden using pergolas. 'Aluminium will also last a lot longer than wood, and the problem with wooden pergolas is once the wood gets wet, it can drip sap on the furniture below, which can ruin furniture. The powder-coated aluminium will never fade and will look the same forever, the wood will change almost instantly after it has been installed.'

If you want to introduce wood to your space, it can still look beautiful, but you'll just need to expect it to change. In my case, though, I'm sticking to Anne's example and opting for a black aluminium option that will withstand the elements and solve my hosting woes in the process.

It’s important to consider the scale of the lighting fixture relative to the space and other design elements in the kitchen to ensure it complements the overall aesthetic.'

Figuring out your floor plan is vital to ensure that your living room works from a practical and aesthetic standpoint. Start by working out the central point of the room; this will guide you as to where to place large pieces of furniture, such as sofas and chairs.

'For example, when designing a living room with a traditional fireplace, this will be a central point,' Campbell says. 'You can then either have the sofa to one side with a couple of chairs opposite. Alternatively, you can position the couch so it’s facing the fireplace and chairs on either side.'

It’s always good to throw off the symmetry of the room and add an extra dimension with mismatched furniture, color schemes, shapes, and styles to make the space feel more relaxed and encourage conversation.

But there is so much more to choosing a living room sofa or chair than just their appearance. The number of chairs you set out is an important consideration, too. Odd numbers are good for seating plans in general because they allow for some rotation of guests.

The interior designer Elsie de Wolfe wrote in 1913 that you must never place a chair on its own in a room; she was very shy herself and noted that it is always the shy person who arrives first, sits on the lone chair, and then is often rooted there for the whole party. But two next to each other does not always work, either. I find that two people sitting side by side do not always speak to each other, so having an occasional chair pulled in at a diagonal can create conversational triangles, similar to the seating placement in Anne Hathaway's home above.

Another way to arrange your seating is to place them within arm's reach of a side or coffee table. Can you imagine having to get up every time you – or your guest – wanted to reach the remote or sip their drink?

Perfecting the 'conversational seating' method is a good idea at every point of the calendar, but there is no time like the present – considering we're deep into hosting season.

This December, we suggest replacing art books and vases with small, tabletop Christmas trees while leaving room for a charcuterie board in the center of your social place. This way, your guests are all at an equal distance from the board – making it easy to eat, drink, and be merry long into the evening. I love how Hathaway's layout (with the coffee table in the middle) demonstrates this look perfectly.

'The sofas and bigger pieces of furniture should be covered in a tough, strong, and relatively plain fabric so you don’t tire of it; they are expensive to recover. I'll admit that I've long held the misconception about bold furniture, but now that I've seen Anne Hathaway's bedroom, I will never look at the role of furniture in the same light. Especially for a bedroom, I think this might be one of the smartest, most beautiful, and most cost-effective ways to design a space. In the Les Misérables actress's home a washed gray farmhouse-style side table sits by a natural wood, open-concept bed. Above, a simple mid-century modern lamp grants some design contrast. These simple pieces create the perfect backdrop to allow the pink bedding, pink paneled walls and blue accent bowls on the side table.

The first reason I love Hathaway's furniture choice is how beautiful it makes the room. While the pink walls or pink throw pillows might be lost among a sea of maximalist furniture, this scheme allows them to shine. In my opinion, the farmhouse style of bedroom furniture is a great choice for replicating this style. The natural wood instantly brings texture into the space. Furthermore, the farmhouse is a style that is almost always created with red, yellow, or blue accents, so it fits into an existing design narrative.

I plan to replicate this style in my future home not only because it is beautiful but because it is clever. With a seemingly endless cast of bedroom trends and new style inspiration, it's hard to settle on just one design scheme. If you grew up believing that you should never mix blue and green together, you are not alone. The source of the adage of never mixing these two contrasting colors has murky roots. Scratch beneath the surface and its origins are hard to fathom. One of the most likely theories, given that so much idiom in the English language derives from maritime vernacular and superstitions, is that sailors were warned not to paint the hulls of their boats green lest they become invisible when capsized. But it’s tenuous.

These days, many designers and decorators are taking more risks with their chosen room color ideas, and thankfully we've seen more exciting color trends as a result.

‘It simply doesn’t occur to me to work with a rule book when it comes to color,’ agrees decorator and textile expert Susan Deliss. 'It’s about what feels right for the room, its light, and its surrounding environment. It’s a question of tone and judgment. In a sunny climate, similar to this Californian chalet, you can get away with pairing mid-tone greens and cobalt blues. This snug room is the perfect example of why you should follow suit when it comes to color combinations for rooms.

Designer Sarah Vanrenen is another fan of blending blue with green. ‘To warm it up, add a splash of pink or orange in the cushions.’ She also chose to use this combination for the walls of her garden room to create a seamless link to the grass beyond the open sides. ‘I always find green an incredibly uplifting and mood-enhancing color; it feeds my soul.' While the blue feels like a soothing sky or deep blue ocean.

It has simply never occurred to me – at least as I've become older and wiser – to not mix these two nature-inspired hues. They work beautifully. Anne Hathaway's snug is a testament to that theory.

I need to come clean: I've been experiencing major modern farmhouse fatigue. As an editor in the design industry, I look at multiple farmhouse living rooms, farmhouse kitchens, and farmhouse dining rooms several times a day, every day. Though I love that the look brings modern sensibility to classic design, it's become boring to me over time. That is until I saw Anne Hathaway's kitchen.

Though I've written at length about all the incredible design details in Hathaway's kitchen, her modern farmhouse lighting was especially striking to me today. The actress's interior designer, the acclaimed Pamela Shamshiri, has chosen to line her ceiling with four clear glass flush mounts and two longer copper pendants. Their arrangement against the paneled wood ceiling creates an elegant contrast. The copper in each of the lamps complements the copper pots hung on her wall, and the mason jar-esque shape of the flush mounts fits in perfectly with the farmhouse feel of the space.

What about this look, in particular, has renewed my interest in modern farmhouses? First, I love how unique it is. Instead of the common practice of choosing one lighting option, Shamshiri has included two different styles of kitchen lighting in a single space. This unorthodox practice draws the eye up, highlighting the beauty of Hathaway's vertical kitchen storage. Further, the different heights and styles of lighting provide an interesting contrast that makes the upper half of the kitchen look much more dynamic.

Each lighting decision makes the kitchen ceiling more interesting. To get more specific, I adore Shamshiri's choice to use flush mounts, rather than recessed lighting. Inset, personality-free, florescent lighting is my biggest pet peeve in modern farmhouse kitchens, and maybe one of the biggest reasons I've developed a distaste for the style. These flush mounts provide the same easy, close-to-the-ceiling, unobtrusive type of lighting but also add a touch of copper, a flash of glass, and a big of height.

Furthermore, the mix of lighting masters one of my favorite elements of design: a seamless blend of antique and modern styles. Though the flush mounts look contemporary, the pendants were most likely sourced from an antique store, vintage market, or resale site. I love the marriage of these different materials and how they create a very unique and interesting look. I can definitely see this becoming a popular kitchen lighting trend going forward.

To recreate this look, I recommend starting by choosing two different types of lighting. For a similar design, you will need four of your shortest light, and two of your longest. The coolest part about taking inspiration from this look is that it would work beyond a modern farmhouse space and could work well in any style room.

Open shelving has been trending for some time now. The look has evolved over the years, most recently taking shape in the 'bookshelf wealth' trend (a term for displaying your favorite books and decorative objects proudly on your shelves). When this form of open shelving first emerged, it was one of my favorite trends of the year; however, after seeing hundreds of takes, the style lost some of its appeal. That was until I saw Anne Hathway's open kitchen shelving, which renewed my interest.

To create a similar look, it's important to think about what is absent as much as the items you choose to include in your own open shelving display.

Furthermore, Hathaway has organized her dishes in three distinct stacks. A simple rule I learned while working in luxury retail is to always merchandise in sets of three or five, and the same principle applies to styling a shelf. Using these prime numbers creates an arrangement that feels instantly intentional and uncluttered. If you have more sizes of plates or bowls, you can stack them with largest on bottom and smallest on top, as we can see on Hathaway's first shelf.

Though I noticed the shelf decor first, the style of Hathaway's shelves is the unsung hero in this space. Her designer, Shamshiri, has opted for floating shelving, resulting in an especially open and airy feel. This shelving style allows Hathway to remove the bulk of the sides of shelving while maintaining the benefits for storage.

'Getting the lighting right is essential to creating a cozy atmosphere in your home. Small changes can make a big difference in making your house an inviting home. Avoid overhead lights and spotlights. Focus on side lighting by blending table lamps, floor lights, and plentiful mirror glass,' he says.

Hathaway has placed her main fixture to the right of her bed, suggesting it's in the perfect spot for late-night reading (while also assisting her with light to find what she needs on her bedside table). Inevitably, the proximity to her bed means the light risks impacting her sleep, which makes it even more important to get right. Thankfully, though, Lewis has a solution for that, too.

'Use light bulbs that are cool white only for task lighting; otherwise, you’ll create the same chilly impression you would when you open a fridge door. Look for bulbs that are warm white to provide a warm glow,' he explains. 'Also, use dimmer switches; they’re fantastic for creating different feelings in a room.'

If we do have to contend with bright built-in lights, however, Lewis also has a solution for that. 'No matter how splendid your ceiling pendant light is, don’t assume that this will suffice to light your room. All it's going to do is contain light around it without casting an ounce of ambiance,' he says.

'Put your lamp lighting on a separate circuit to your wall lights or overhead pendant, it’ll enable you to play around with different effects.'

In Hathaway's case, we are taken to the Swiss Alps, but its transportive qualities can be anything we wish to make it.

My entire job involves looking at celebrity homes, so it's always refreshing to see something completely new. This week, Anne Hathaway's shelving provided that opportunity.

I've loved pergolas since I was a child; they always seemed so magical, often adorned with scented plants, or twinkly lights – making me feel like I had somehow teleported to an enchanted forest. Fast forward thirty years, and I now love them for their ability to create shade and act as a good garden screening idea.

Unlike more daring kitchen colors, unpained cabinets take things back to basics – in the most beautiful way possible. Homes and Gardens' digital editor, Jennifer Ebert, says this is the reason for its dominance in the months ahead – and through to 2025.

'The wooden kitchen revival is one of the most refreshing trends to emerge from this year, and its beauty, versatility, and ability to work with almost every other hue means it will live on long into 2025 and beyond,' she begins.

As mentioned, in many cases, we see wood used on kitchen cabinets; however, Hathaway's twist on the trend shows there are other ways to tap into the look. It's this versatility that, Ebert says, is keeping the movement alive.

'Unlike some colors that are often only fit for cabinets, natural wood is flexible and durable enough to work elsewhere in the kitchen – whether that's through a backsplash or shelf like Hathaway or somewhere on your island – for the ultimate focal point.'
