Interiors therapist Suzanne Roynon explains, 'Aside from emitting an electromagnetic field which can interfere with sleep, and the temptation to check it if you wake in the night, the blue light can start the brain waking up much earlier than necessary. Also, the charger and the phone become warm during the charge. On warm summer nights, the last thing you need next to your head is a heated phone.'

'Since summer is a hot, fiery time of year, in Feng Shui we see this as the fire element,' says Feng Shui expert Anjie Cho. 'When it's so fiery, it's helpful to offer balance to cool and invite restfulness, especially when we're sleeping. I would recommend readers remove anything that's overly fiery: the color red and triangular shapes. Electronic devices are also considered the fire element, so if you can, place them away from the bed to support your rest.'

Remove: Books 'You'll Get To'

Books on a nightstand are just as important as a good table lamp or a carafe of water, but that doesn't mean you need to overdo it. Keep your current reading rotation by your bedside, and leave out any editions you've not yet got around to.

Suzanne says to 'remove that large pile of books you'll 'get to'. It’s great to read, but only keep the active one beside you; put the rest in another room. Not only will you be more focused, but you’ll remove the sense of pressure which comes with things waiting to be done, or in this case, read.'

The aim is to create a chaos-free, serene bedroom that aids a good night's rest, and stopping your nightstand from becoming a catchall will help you achieve this.

'For a relaxed bedtime experience during warmer months, I start by removing items from the nightstand that add visual weight and are not functionally necessary,' says interior designer Barrett Oswald. 'Heavy charging stations, piles of books, and excessive decor may make your nightstand look messy, even if everything is neatly arranged.'

Treat your nightstand as an opportunity to show off only your most prized pieces. Your favorite vase, a treasured painting, or a sentimental trinket are best shown off in smaller doses. 'Instead, we opt for a streamlined approach,' adds Barrett. 'The goal of summer is to maintain lightness and simplicity in your surroundings.'

Add: Fresh Seasonal Florals

Seasonal stems will make your home feel like summer, and your sleep space feel calmer. Warmer nights call for a fresh breeze, meaning handpicked flowers will waft throughout your bedroom.

'I would always recommend picking flowers to make your nightstand feel summery and purposeful,' says Barrett. 'Even a thin vase with a single floral can create a welcoming and lighter atmosphere around the bed. And although we all wish to get rid of chargers on our nightstands, it may be unrealistic. I like to use a cute catch-all to place my phone instead. We also enjoy putting summer-scented candles on the nightstand as a seasonal touch.'

And we’re not just talking about changing the look to match more seasonal colors and prints – switching out to cooling sheets is just the start. For a bed that offers the ultimate relief on hot summer nights, you actually need layers – the right layers.

A truly well-designed bed doesn’t stop at a duvet and a pair of throw pillows. From investing in an organic mattress to layering quality linen, there’s an art to designing a cooling bedroom. ‘Gone are the days of overly layered beds with a mountain of throw pillows that all end up on the floor at night,’ says Selena Reif, founder of Selena Michele Interiors. ‘The most luxurious summer beds lately have intentional layers and a more minimal approach to styling.’

So, want to know how to layer your bed like a designer? This five-step formula will make your bedroom feel lighter, brighter, and instantly cooler this summer.

1. Start With a Natural Base

Before styling a bed for summer with the right linens, throws, and pillows, you need to get the base right. While the best mattress is essential year-round, one that's organic and heat-resistant will ensure a cool night's rest.

'Heat can make it difficult to fall asleep and affects how well we sleep, and particularly during the warm summer months, temperature regulation is imperative for getting a great night's sleep,' explains Clare Schifano, Global Marketing Director at Vispring.

'Building a good base is fundamental to a well-designed bedscape, and this begins with the mattress. In bedmaking, natural materials, including wool, cotton, and horsehair, have been trusted for centuries for their exceptional performance. 2. Invest in Breathable Sheets

'Unsurprisingly, a summer-ready bed is fitted with breathable sheets. Start with your bed sheets, as these form the foundation of any well-dressed bed,' says Cristiano Quieti, Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer at Frette.

'The best bedding material feels comfortable to sleep in depending on the weather, the surroundings, and body heat,' continues Cristiano. 'As nights become warmer in the summer months, we recommend opting for bed sheets made from lighter, more breathable fabrics that help regulate your temperature throughout the night.'

'The best materials for summer are breathable natural fibers,' explains Selena. 'I love the softness of percale cotton for the sheet set; it really is the best material against your skin, breathable and cooling. Other materials to layer in are linens, lightweight gauzes, or anything else that regulates body temperature.'

'You also want to stick with hues that give off that summer vibe: soft ivory, warm whites, dusty blues, pale sage, dusty clay tones. My favorite is to combine a few of those colors to create a tonal palette that feels relaxed and effortless, just like the best summer evenings themselves.'

3. Add a Lightweight Quilt

'Next, layer on a light duvet – and use an insert that is appropriate for the weather,' advises Selena. 'You definitely want to go with a thinner duvet in the summer months. I like the duvet in an accent color or pattern that coordinates with the sheets but isn’t overly matchy-matchy. This is also a great opportunity to lean into linens and other natural materials that are so gorgeous.'

Jennifer Baxter, founder of Baxter Hill Interiors, agrees. 'The next layer is a lightweight coverlet or quilted throw rather than a heavy duvet. This is your structural layer that carries the color or texture story of the bed. A duvet in summer lives folded at the foot or stored away altogether.'

'Put that down comforter away already!' advises designer Megan Cherin, Principal at Cherin Studio. Instead, Megan suggests switching in something lighter that you can use to add comfort and warmth as you need it, and when not in use can look chic layered at the end of the bed.

'During the day, you can pull it up over the whole bed, including over the pillows, and leave it either draped to the floor for a chic laid-back vibe or tucked neatly under the mattress for something a little more streamlined. At night, all the extra material from the bedspread allows you to snuggle into something soft and cool.'

4. Drape a Summery Throw

'Top all of this off with a lightweight blanket or coverlet,' says Selena. 'If the sheet set and duvet are all stunning and you want to see them throughout the day, I keep this layer folded towards the bottom of the bed. It can also be super chic to drape a linen bed cover over the entire thing and go for a beautifully refined look.'

While you might associate styling a blanket with winter, a lightweight throw can bring a lived-in ease to a bedscape that feels so fitting for summer. Whether it's a thin linen throw or a thicker waffled blanket, here is your chance to add more color, pattern and texture to your bed.

It's also a great option if your climate can be a little unreliable. 'Consider adding a throw to add a little texture and offer an in-between option if you’re not ready for the duvet, but need a little something more than your coverlet,' adds Jennifer Wilson, founder of Jennifer J Interiors.

5. Finish It With (Limited) Throw Pillows

Now's the time to add the throw pillows, a switch that takes seconds but really makes your bed feel like it shifts with the seasons. 'Don’t forget your throw pillows in the seasonal swap – it’s time for your linen and cotton to shine, and for your velvets to have some downtime,' says Jennifer.

Whether it's a frilly decorative pillow or a block-printed floral, throw pillows will give your bedscape some much-needed personality. 'From there, introduce a lightweight throw at the foot of the bed for warmth on cooler spring evenings, then add a couple of pillows in complementary seasonal tones, soft pastels or warm earthy hues, to bring color and personality whilst keeping the overall look curated and serene,' advises Cristiano.

Alternatively, you could keep things simple with just one striking choice. 'To finish off the look, add just one lumbar pillow across the top of the bed so you aren’t left with a mountain to move at the end of the day before climbing into bed,' says Selena.

The Summer Bedding Edit

'For me, the keyword when it comes to bedscapes is simplicity, particularly in the summertime,' says Megan. 'No need to get all fussy with lots of pillows! I pare it back to the absolute minimum when the summer warmth is seeping in. My formula is: a nice, cool set of percale sheets, four pillows (two per side), and an oversized linen bedspread. That's it! What I love about this is that nothing is getting in the way here; it's as unadorned as you can get.'

While there are obvious ways to make your bedroom cooler in the warmer months (namely, layering cooling bed sheets, buying a fan, or investing in an AC unit), creating a sense of light, bright breeziness can be done through your choice of decor too.

And of course, the most obvious way to do that? Color. Interior designer Jennifer McKissick created a relaxing bedroom by keeping the color palette classic. A base of cream paint creates a bright, light-filled effect, while the green and blue floral prints add charm and whimsy.

'The design process for this room, which happens to be my personal bedroom, really started with the fabric: Colefax and Fowler's Fuchsia Chintz,' begins Jennifer. 'I saw it years ago in Lee Radziwill's bedroom in her Manhattan apartment and fell in love with its organic femininity. Lee used the red colorway of the print in her bedroom, which is also lovely, but the blue spoke to me immediately. Blue has a very calming, cooling effect. I wanted this space to feel tranquil, but not plain and ordinary like some overly-simple bedrooms you see today.'

The fabric inspired the bedroom's colors, acting as a jumping-off point for everything to connect to. 'The blue, green, and white color palette and the balance of textiles helped achieve this through the juxtaposition of the bolder patterns like the chintz against the softer check.'

'When I had the room painted initially, the walls were blue, but I wanted the space to feel even lighter, so we painted them white and chose to do blue on the ceiling (Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light), which really sets the tone over the whole room, making it feel cool and peaceful. When the sunlight peaks in the morning, it feels like waking up in an English Garden.'

Interior designer Chrissy Ritter also layered green, blue, and white to create a light and cooling bedroom for her client. 'The homeowner wanted a room that felt timeless rather than trendy, and blue, green, and cream are one of those combinations that never seem to go out of style,' says Chrissy. 'It's a palette that feels fresh and relaxed while still having a sense of tradition.'

'It also felt very appropriate for the English country look we were after,' explains Chrissy. 'The wallpaper already had this beautiful blend of soft blues and greens, so we pulled those colors throughout the bedding, lampshades, and textiles to create a room that feels cohesive without feeling overly matched.'

'Bedrooms should feel restful, and cooler colors naturally lend themselves to that feeling. Blues bring a sense of calm and quiet, while green introduces an element of nature and softness.'

While green and blue tones are on the colder side, it's the lived-in layers that bring the warmth and depth to the room. 'What keeps the room from feeling TOO cold is the layering. We mixed multiple patterns, warm creams, natural textures, and antique brass accents throughout the space,' says Chrissy. 'I always say I want a room to feel cool, but not cold, and that's really what we achieved here. The palette feels fresh and serene, but there's enough warmth and depth that it still feels comfortable and lived in.'

'This is the youngest daughter’s room, so we wanted it to feel youthful, bright, and happy, but still like something she could grow into over time,' explains interior designer Katie Davis.

'Blue, green, and white is one of those combinations that always feel fresh and really cooling to me. We used Dulux's Lily White as the foundation because it’s soft and airy but still brings personality. The blue gives the room a sense of calm, while the green keeps it feeling cheerful and youthful. Together, the palette feels timeless enough to grow with her but playful enough to feel special now.'

'Cooler tones naturally create a calmer feeling, which makes them a great fit for bedrooms,' explains Katie. 'Lily White has this softness to it that feels light and fresh without feeling too cold. Combined with the greens, florals, and natural textures, the room feels airy and relaxed while still warm and welcoming.'

Darker colors form a much better background for paintings and artworks than white, which art galleries and museums have discovered.'

Lisa tells Homes & Gardens, 'Jewel tones don’t just look beautiful, they can add more visual depth to the home. To do this, you need to really commit, using color drenching to cover the trim and even the ceilings. 'Colors that have a biophilic nature, such as blue and green, evoke a stress-relieving and mood-boosting atmosphere. This makes teal – a deep, cyan-green shade – ideal for rooms to wind down in, including the bedroom.'

We all want our sleep spaces to feel tranquil, but that doesn't mean that our bedroom colors need to be boring. We are officially bidding farewell to the millennial gray that ruled bedrooms a decade ago. While neutrals are still part of 2026 bedroom color trends, they're being reinvented as warmer, more saturated shades that envelop bedrooms rather than stripping them back.

'2026 is going to see a shift from the more saturated colors seen in previous years and will focus on a more subtle and comforting take on color,' explains Helen Shaw, Marketing Manager at Benjamin Moore. 'These ‘quietly colorful’ hues are easy to use in the bedroom and won’t tire over the years as your style evolves and furniture or décor swaps in or out.'

1. Cool Grays

'We think the era of the cool, pale greige bedroom is over,' explains Flora Slater, founder of Studio Flora London. 'That particular shade, the one that sits somewhere between grey and beige and promises to 'go with everything', tends to go with nothing. It creates bedrooms that feel unresolved, like the decision was never quite made.'

Instead, softer neutrals are replacing gray in 2026. 'What we're loving instead is genuine color commitment. In one of our recent bedrooms (pictured above), we painted the tongue-and-groove panelling in a soft sage green all the way up to dado height, which immediately gave the room a sense of identity and coziness. 'The colors we're moving away from are anything that hedges its bets,' adds Flora. 'In 2026, rooms need a point of view. Commit to the sage, commit to the blush, commit to the terracotta, just don't commit to the color that tries to be everything and ends up being nothing.'

2. Beige

While neutral bedrooms will always be popular, beiges and taupes are no longer dominating this year's color trends.

'When it comes to bedroom color trends for 2026, traditionally popular beiges and grays are gradually being overtaken by the ‘new’ neutrals with pink and red undertones,' explains Helen. 'These hues add a touch of warmth to the bedroom space while remaining the perfect foundation for a laid-back neutral scheme.'

Beiges are being replaced by richer pinks and terracotta tones that feel neutral but far more noticeable. 'Plaster pink shades such as Whispering Peach 2014-60 and Venetian Portico AF-185 work perfectly for this look. The soft, dusky rose tones in both add a wonderful, earthy and grounded feel, perfect for a bedroom where we unwind and rejuvenate.'

3. Off-Black and Navy

'Darker, super saturated tones that create a moody space – like dark gray, off-blacks, and navy – are starting to go out of style,' says interior designer Barrett Oswald. 'They can feel a little heavy for a room you’re actually trying to unwind in.'

While decorating with moody colors brings richness and warmth to snug home libraries or family rooms, they can feel a little too encompassing for bedrooms designed to soothe and comfort.

'Instead, bedrooms are leaning more toward warmer tones, lighter, brighter retreats, and spaces that feel more relaxed and livable. Softer neutrals, muted colors, and added texture, especially through wallpaper in fresh tones, give the room depth without relying on one dark color to do all the work.'

Warmer grays like Farrow & Ball's Elephant Breath or Pinky Beige by Sherwin-Williams will bring a balance of airiness and depth that isn't overly moody.

Cool-toned, lifeless paint colors that lack depth are officially out this year. Instead, interior designers are opting for colors with substance and vibrancy, reaching for earthier, grounded hues that feel neutral but noticeable. On the other end of the spectrum, we're also saying goodbye to overly rich tones that dominate bedrooms rather than soothe.

Whether it's a seasonal bouquet wafting through an entryway or a dainty café curtain that trickles morning sunshine into a kitchen, small subtle tweaks are all it takes to refresh the home and embrace spring's (long-awaited) arrival. We spoke with designers about the small spring switches that they make that have the biggest impact, and the same answer came up over and over – bed linen.

While the annual spring clean is inevitable, welcoming spring is not just about sweeping away old cobwebs, but injecting new colors, patterns, and textures into the home to (finally) bid farewell to the dark depths of winter. 'We usually swap in lighter, more breathable fabrics like linen or bamboo. It’s an easy update that makes the whole bed feel more seasonal without doing too much,' explains interior designer Barrett Oswald. 'Linen is always a favorite – just remember, it can feel a little crisp at first, but it softens quickly and ends up being super comfortable.'

While committing to spring color trends through paint can feel a little permanent, bedding is an easy switch that requires far less thought. 'Light and warm colors like soft whites, creamy neutrals, and pale blues feel right,' says Barrett. 'It’s also a nice time to bring in a subtle pattern, even something small-scale, just to keep things from feeling too flat.'

'Mixing and matching instead of using a full matching set makes a big difference,' says Barrett. 'Start with a simple base of a duvet and shams, and then layer in a lightweight coverlet, a throw, and a few pillows with different textures or patterns. For a super easy finishing touch, a light linen spray (something citrusy or floral) makes everything feel instantly more spring-ready.'

'When spring comes around, I love switching to lighter, more breathable bedding that feels fresh and easy. Bamboo sheets are a favorite! They are incredibly soft, temperature-regulating, and perfect for those in-between seasons' says interior designer Tracy Morris. 'I also like layering in a John Robshaw hand-stitched quilt, which adds just the right amount of texture without feeling heavy. It’s a simple swap that instantly makes the bedroom feel lighter, brighter, and more in tune with the season.'

The best bedding is about more than just a more spring-appropriate material. 'When it comes to spring bedding, color plays a big role in setting the tone,' explains Tracy. 'Whites and blues are always a welcome choice this time of year; they feel crisp, clean, and instantly refreshing. That said, I also love bringing in deeper greens or even a touch of canary yellow to add a bit of energy and personality. These tones still feel seasonal but offer a more layered, unexpected take on a classic spring palette.'

Bedding trends this year are all about mixing and matching, too. 'This spring and summer, bedding trends are all about lightness, texture, and a relaxed, layered feel. I love starting with breathable sheets, then adding a lightweight quilt or coverlet for just enough warmth without heaviness,' says Tracy. 'Layering in a mix of textures, like a hand-stitched quilt, soft linen shams, and a simple throw at the foot of the bed. It keeps the look interesting but still effortless. The key is to keep it edited and airy, so the bed feels inviting, not overdone.'

While paint can feel like a bit of a commitment that may not last beyond a season, bed linen brings a welcome dose of color that's on par with a good pastel-painted wall. Cristiano Quieti, Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer at Frette, shares some of his all-time favourite spring colors ideas for bedrooms.

'Soft pastels like dusty pink and sky-blue feel fresh, restful, and grounding. For something bolder, look to warm, earthy tones like rich yellow and deep indigo that add warmth and a pop of color. Embracing spring's natural palette helps to transform the bed into a sanctuary.'

'When creating your 'bedscape', start with your bed sheets, as these form the foundation of any well-dressed bed,' explains Cristiano. One of the fundamental rules of Feng Shui, when it comes to the bedroom space, is a distinct lack of mirrors. The reasoning is simple – a mirror reflecting your bedspace can drain your energy, and invite unwanted energy into your bedroom.

That's why, when recently staying in a ryokan, or traditional inn, in Japan, I was intrigued to see a particularly clever Feng Shui feature: The full-length mirror was hidden behind a dedicated door, easily opened when needed, and closed away ahead of bedtime.

According to experts, it's one of the best ways to follow the all-important Feng Shui mirror rules, without compromising on convenience. Here's why.

This Clever Mirror Feng Shui Feature Promotes Better Rest

As Suzanne Butler, Feng Shui Consultant and founder at Harmonising Energies, explains, 'In Feng Shui, mirrors are considered powerful tools that direct and double the energy, or Qi, of what is reflected. While they are useful for making a room look larger during the day, they can become "active" disruptors at night.'

That's not the only reason that it's important to consider where mirrors should be placed in a bedroom for Feng Shui, either. Suzanne Roynon, Feng Shui Expert, Interiors Therapist, and Founder of Interiors Therapy, adds, 'Mirrors amplify the energy in a room, which can lead to restlessness and poor quality sleep.'

Additionally, she warns, a mirror is said to invite infidelity in a relationship – 'bringing in the energy of a third or fourth person in the reflection' – and can also encourage ghosts and spirits into the room, all of which interfere with restful sleep.

So, after recently researching and talking to experts about bedroom Feng Shui earlier this year, I was particularly interested (and impressed) to see the cleverly hidden mirror at our hotel in Japan.

It's an easy way to avoid any negative effects of the mirror, but it made getting ready for dinner and in the morning easy, as I didn't have to leave the room entirely to see my reflection. And, throughout the night, I didn't encounter any energy shifts or disruption as I slept, either.

'By closing the door on a wall-mounted mirror, you effectively "pause" that active energy, allowing the room to become a true Yin sanctuary,' advises Suzanne Butler.

Alternative, Easy Ways to Cover Mirrors In Your Bedroom Space

Of course, not every bedroom space includes a mirror with a dedicated door. But, to enjoy all the beauty and benefits of Japanese-inspired interiors, it doesn't have to.

'You can still achieve the same results with methods to mask the reflection,' says Suzanne Butler.

• Decorative textiles: Drape a high-quality silk scarf or a linen throw over a floor-length mirror. 'This adds a soft, tactile element to the room that absorbs rather than reflects,' she explains, though it can make a space look cluttered and messy,
• Pivot: If you have a freestanding mirror, simply rotate it to face the wall or a corner before getting into bed.
• Folding screens: Placing a decorative folding screen in front of a fixed mirror to hide the glass and add a touch of flair to your space. I recommend the Japanese-inspired RISÖR Room Divider, available at IKEA, for this.
• Frosted window film: 'If you already have mirror wardrobes and changing the doors simply isn’t practical, frosting the mirror is one option, self-adhesive decals are another,' says Suzanne Roynon. 'I’ve also seen a client place a curtain track above sliding mirror doors with a beautiful full-length curtain, which is closed across them each night. It’s a simple and very effective solution.' Alternatively, you may be rethinking whether you should have a mirror in your bedroom altogether. In this case, you may choose to relocate your mirror to another room, or to another part of your bedroom so it doesn't reflect the bed.

'Do the same with a very reflective TV screen, which has the same impact as a mirror,' adds Suzanne Roynon.

This, of course, helps to naturally regulate our circadian rhythms and, therefore, sleep cycles. Melatonin is released in the body towards bedtime (and as it gets dark) to help you drift off. As morning nears, the cortisol hormone is released to aid in easier waking. That's why having more natural light aids waking.

To easily achieve this cortisol-regulating benefit in your sleep environment, regardless of your location, you can switch your normal bedside lamp bulbs for smart ones and alter the hue to something more beneficial. What the Sleep Experts Say

Dr. Andrew Gall is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Hope College and a Neuroscientist who studies the neural mechanisms and functions of sleep, including how light affects circadian rhythms.

He explains, 'Smart bulbs can be a useful tool to improve sleep because they act as a "zeitgeber," (a time cue) to help you wake up naturally with the sunlight. This is especially important because our sleep-wake patterns need to be aligned with the sun and darkness to have maximal benefits for us.'

Restorative sleep is vital to long-term wellbeing as it allows the body to do important healing work overnight, removing or fixing damaged cells, reducing inflammation, processing memories, and much more.

Dr Gall advises that using other forms of traditional alarm clocks that wake us up at a specific, allotted time do so without regard for the sleep state we are in.

'We experience the most benefits of sleep when we wake up directly from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, because our brain activity during REM sleep is more similar to our brain activity during wakefulness,' continues Dr. Gall. 'You may have noticed that sometimes when your alarm clock goes off, you immediately hit snooze and feel very groggy.

'This is likely because your traditional alarm clock woke you up during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is a time when our brain activity mismatches that during wakefulness.'

Aged brass is the latest 'it' material. Though designers rave about its natural lustre, versatility, and timelessness, we rarely see examples of how to style it outside the kitchen. However, archival images of Phil Collins' bedroom from 1976 prove that the metal is good for much more than cabinet pulls.

Interior designers will tell you that every memorable room begins with a clear jumping off point, and in this bedroom, Nicole let the Pierre Frey floral bedroom wallpaper take the lead.

'Once we chose the floral, we knew hesitation would dilute the impact. Pattern only feels powerful when you commit, so we leaned all the way in rather than treating it as an accent,' Nicole explains of the decision not to limit the pattern mixing to a half-commited accent wall or soft furnishings. 'Everything else, from the headboard to the rug, was layered to support and deepen that initial decision.'

'It is traditional at its core but fully committed in its expression,' she explains of the aesthetic of the room, which tells a softer version of the confident color story in the rest of the home.

'We wanted it to feel transportive and intimate, almost like stepping into a storybook moment grounded in historic architecture. The clients immediately said they feel like they’re on vacation when they wake up here.'

Nicole explains how scale, control, and tonal consistency were key in helping the space to feel cocooning rather than overwhelming. 'The floral stays within a disciplined palette, so even though it is immersive, it reads as cohesive rather than chaotic.'

Treating the pattern as the anchor of the space, rather than an accent, allows the print to remain the focal point in the room – building up the rest of the scheme with complementary colors, textiles, and textures.

Alexis Vitale of Vitale Design Group agrees, likening overly uniform bedrooms to a song sung on a single note. 'When everything matches, from headboard to nightstands to benches, the room lacks interest,' she says. 'The room should be given depth through textures, metals, and wood variations.'

'Mixing wood tones, incorporating varied silhouettes, and blending old with new adds character, depth, and a sense of individuality that simply can’t be achieved with a matching set,' Jennifer adds.

3. Accent Walls

Few bedroom trends signal a specific moment in time quite like the accent wall. Once seen as a quick and unique way to add drama or color to a space, accent walls are increasingly being viewed as an interior design trend that dates faster than it elevates.

The issue isn’t the color or pattern chosen, but the imbalance it creates in the space. When one wall is doing all the work, the rest of the room can feel under-designed by comparison. 'My least favorite is the accent wall. I’ve said it many times that it’s like a bad mullet – party in the front and dull in the back,' says Alexis Vitale.

Jennifer Davis agrees, adding that accent walls aren't as timeless as they once appeared. 'Bold, highly graphic accent wallpapers or paint colors chosen purely for impact can date a bedroom quickly,' she explains. 'While they may feel exciting in the moment, they often lack longevity.'

Instead, designers encourage a more enveloping and all-over approach with color drenching, pattern drenching, and even the accent ceiling remaining more stylish choices in 2026.

4. Boho Headboards

Much like accent walls, the bohemian-style headboard trend had a moment as an easy way to inject personality into a bedroom.

Rattan, cane, and sculptural woven designs offered instant texture and a relaxed feel, but when used as a standalone feature, they’re now beginning to read as another trend tied to an outdated era.

'Bohemian standalone rattan headboards were trendy for a while, but they can now feel dated and overly casual, and tend to read more like a dorm room than a thoughtfully designed bedroom,' says designer Amy Courtney of Amy Courtney Design.

But that doesn't mean wicker is done. Far from it. There are plenty of ways to introduce the warmth of natural weave into your bedroom – whether that's with new furniture pieces or thrifted finds – while choosing something much more comfortable for the headboard, like an upholstered pattern or sumptuous velvet.

Designers aren’t moving away from texture altogether, either, but they are reconsidering how it’s introduced. Instead of singular, overtly boho statements, texture is now being layered more subtly through wall treatments (think grasscloth), bedding, and mixed materials that feel in harmony with the room as a whole.

Designer Mary Beth Sullivan of MB Sullivan Design is no longer a fan, saying: 'People are over squatting to get in and out of beds. It isn’t functional (hello, no under-bed storage!), it isn’t ergonomic, and in most rooms, the scale brings the whole room down,' she explains.

In the quieter weeks of January, when rest and reset feel especially front of mind, we’ve been revisiting the homes Homes & Gardens were lucky enough to get a peek behind the curtain of.

This time, we’re stepping into the bedroom. Looking back at our 2025 house tours, we’ve gathered the sleep spaces you loved most – rooms that balanced calm and comfort with considered and memorable design.

These are the four bedrooms you couldn’t get enough of – saved, shared, and returned to again and again. Chic, characterful, and endlessly serene, each space is proof that great design is as much about feeling at home as it is about good looks.

1. A 1920s Jewel Box Bedroom and a Surprise Murphy Bed

When designer Caitlin Jones Ghajar took on this tiny 1920s colorful apartment in San Francisco, she had her sights set on creating a jewel box-style space bursting with all the character and charm of a much larger home.

But for what it lacks in square footage, boy, do these sleep spaces make up for it in color and personality.

'The project brief from the client was to create a space that was ‘Accidentally Wes Anderson’ layered, and elevated eclectic,' Cailtin told us. 'They encouraged a primary focus on high-quality and restored second-use and vintage items. Inspired by the Art Deco style, we also chose to mix periods for dynamic layering that is more interesting than sticking to a literal deco palette.'

And nothing is more 'accidentally Wes Anderson' than this primary bedroom. Caitlin chose a custom wallpaper to pick up the tones of the reconditioned 1930s storage in the room, and created detailed elevations of every wall to ensure the birds and other elements of the wallpaper were perfectly placed. 'Every color, every bird, and leaf placement was lovingly chosen to lay out perfectly with the architecture and represent the palette of the entire condo.'

'The vintage rosewood nightstands were newly lacquered with custom Calacatta tops cut for durability. The skirted lampshades add a feminine nod to balance the strong lines of the bed.'

And if that wasn't enough to inspire – the small guest space is sure to do so. Because it is a one-bedroom, one-bath, the team had to think creatively about multi-use spaces. While a Murphy bed in the dining room might sound unexpected, the effect is like something out of a bijou hotel suite. 'The dining table can also be moved to make way for a Murphy bed cleverly hidden behind this new paneling detail,' Cailtin explained.

2. Studio McGee's Serene Modern Rustic Bedroom

Without us having to declare this a Shea McGee project, you can see her design personality stamped all over it. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the home is 'brand new but feels like it’s been thoughtfully crafted over time.' Shea says of The Oaks, a well-loved Studio McGee project from 2025.

Designed with a blend of modern and traditional style, it's a modern rustic home that feels imbued with inviting warmth, taking most of its inspiration from the grove of oak trees lining the property.

As one of our best-loved house tours from last year, the bedroom in this home, like so much of the house, overlooks the scenery outside and takes most of its charm and palette from that enviable view.

'The oak trees play a huge part in the design of the home, from the textures and the tones that we used, and also the positioning of the build of the home,' Shea explains. 'The architects were really thoughtful of the placement, so you get these views of the oak trees out the main windows,' she says.

To double down on that organic scheme, the ceiling has been clad in wooden beamed ceilings that can be seen throughout the home, and upped the coziness with a neutral yet earthy palette throughout the textiles in the space.

And to further enhance the room's ambiance, Shea has employed a clever layered lighting scheme using a contemporary candelabra, wall sconces, and a pair of stone bedside lamps that add some rustic texture to the nightstands.

The stand-out area in this space has to be the seating area. With two moss green tub chairs and a large indoor plant, Shea's managed to create the ultimate relaxation nook that still remains airy and bright, despite the deeper tones. It's the perfect blend of comfort and style that Shea knows best.

3. A Neutral Yet Charming Master Bedroom in London

London-based homeowners Charly and Jonny (alongside their children) undertook the renovation of an old Victorian house with a leap of faith and a balance of beauty and utility in mind.

With the help of Smith Brooke Architects and interior designer Emma Ainscough, the couple aimed to create a space that felt both deeply personal and highly practical. ‘We live fairly casually,’ says Charly, ‘but we also enjoy a balance of beauty and utility. We wanted that to be reflected in the design of this house,' Charly explains.

‘We wanted to retain a sense of playfulness, creating spaces that were visually cohesive while exploring possibilities with pattern and color,’ Charly adds. And while they stuck true to the home's original characteristics – while reinstating some of the would-be original features like cornices, sash windows, and high ceilings – they also made some rather bold design choices.

But, you'll find that in this home, the boldness is not jarring or unexpected and sits alongside a common thread of subtlety and softness that designer Emma managed to carry throughout each room. Including the inviting master bedroom.

Emma added custom Delft tiles by Petra Palumbo to frame the entrance to their bathroom and dressing area, choosing meaningful designs for the family, such as an ice cream cone, a bear, a martini and fries, a cat in honor of their pets, and even Queen Elizabeth II, as a nod to their patriotism.

A striking headboard covered in La Pannonie by Pierre Frey fabric is framed by a soft canopy, while the neutral walls allowed Emma to create a statement with the rich red nightstands and plenty of vintage decor.

‘We’ve taken a giant step forward decoratively with this home,’ says Charly. ‘It symbolizes a new stage in our life, but also expresses greater design confidence.’

4. Two Floral and Fresh Singapore Sleep Spaces

'When you're in this apartment, it feels like you’re in a cozy cottage,’ said Elizabeth Hay of this colorful new build apartment in Singapore. And despite its small footprint and new-build status, that is exactly what she has achieved.

Once boring and soulless, this small home is now a fresh and floral haven that displays Elizabeth Hay's signature layered style and love of color and pattern.

When speaking about the clients, who Elizabeth had worked with before, she said that they 'wanted the apartment to be very cozy with lots of layers and color, but practical too, as they have a young child.’

Elizabeth was able to indulge both her and her clients' love of color and pattern in the two bedrooms within the apartment. The main bedroom brings the real wow factor with a beautiful triple-height vaulted ceiling that was uncovered during the renovation and a four-poster bed that was chosen to draw the eye upwards.

The entire room was then pattern-drenched in Croquis Collection No. 142 wallpaper by Christopher Moore, and paired with a vibrant Schumacher fabric on the headboard that picks out tones of red, green, and pink.

‘It feels very fitting and lovely for Singapore because it features ginger flowers and pomegranates and all the things that grow locally,' Elizabeth says of the floral fabric.

In the second bedroom, the Nasturtium wallpaper in Biglead by Lake August was chosen to pack a punch, offset by verdant green closets bordered with an orange scalloped detail. The result is a joyfully colorful yet super restful home with two rather stand-out bedrooms.

While the house design of these projects might each fall into totally different interior design styles, the bedrooms of these homes all share something in common – a sense of deep comfort. ‘While crisp white bedding paired with beautiful custom pillows will always be a classic, I’m seeing a refreshing shift toward introducing color at the foundation of the bed,’ notes Liz Williams, founder and designer of Atlanta-based Liz Williams Interiors. ‘This can range from subtle beige or tan neutrals to more expressive shades like soft green or blue that highlight other colors in the room.’

And even beyond that mostly hidden fitted layer, the duvet deserves consideration too – especially in winter, when it’s often buried beneath throw pillows and blankets. ‘People can easily embrace this trend by using a colored duvet cover or coverlet while keeping sheets and accent pillows neutral,’ Liz explains. Since more is more, consider tacking on a bed skirt or piped bedding detail for extra oomph.

2. Texture Maxxing

The designers we consulted seem to agree: texture-maxxing – a look we’ve already seen take hold in the living room trends – is also migrating to the bedroom in 2026.

Tracy Morris, designer and founder of Tracy Morris Design, goes so far as to call it the ‘most design-forward and “cool”’ look for the year, thanks to its natural nonchalance. ‘This approach stands out because it prioritizes depth and personality over perfection,’ she says, citing her love of mixing tactile quilts from brands like Matouk with crisp sheets or softer, more relaxed layers beneath. ‘It feels intentional and elevated, but still approachable and livable.’

‘Texture is playing a bigger role than ever in bedroom design,’ adds Liz Williams. ‘Mixing finishes like sateen sheets with relaxed linen, a matelassé coverlet, or lightly quilted layers adds depth and interest, even within a restrained color palette. This is an easy trend to adopt by layering different weaves rather than introducing more patterns.’

3. The ‘Unipillow’

Sometime around the middle of last year, we started catching whiffs of the ‘unipillow’ – a single, sleek, often generously long pillow replacing the once-mandatory pile of throw cushions. But don’t raid the cushion closet just yet; in 2026, this edited approach remains the minimalist bedding look du jour.

‘I still love layered pillows, but the look is becoming more edited,’ notes Liz Williams, Atlanta-based interior designer and founder of Liz Williams Interiors. ‘A tailored approach, such as a single, long lumbar pillow in a beautiful fabric,’ she says, ‘feels fresh, intentional, and polished without being overstyled.’

4. Characterful Unique Choices

Personality-packed bedding is very much in for 2026 – it’s just no longer spelled out quite so literally. According to Kati Curtis, principal at Kati Curtis Design, monograms are finally on the outs.

‘Monograms instantly cheapen a bed, turning something meant to feel tailored and considered into a gift-registry cliché. You already know your own name, how arrogant to plaster your initials all over everything,’ she quips, adding, ‘This trend screams new money, no taste or imagination.’ In other words, attempts at making a bed feel ‘personal’ via initials alone are reading cheugy in 2026.

Instead, expression now comes through thoughtful layering with patterned quilts and coverlets, subtle color play, and tactile textures. This lack of monogrammed uniformity, Kati notes, ‘reads confident and collated rather than all purchased from the same store,’ adding that ‘confidence is exactly where bedding, and interiors in general are headed next year!’

5. Cooling Breathable Materials

We’re officially leaving stuffy sheet layers behind. It’s easy to underestimate just how cool a bed needs to be for real comfort – not just in the height of summer, but all year long. So, we're getting smarter.

Cotton percale and textured linen will always remain on rotation, but increasingly, that cooling role is being taken over by bamboo viscose. Softer than silk, easier on the wallet, and often more sustainable, this material’s popularity has taken off like a kite.

‘The continued rise of ultra-soft, breathable materials from brands like Cozy Earth, whose sheets feel cozy yet cool, are perfect for year-round comfort,’ says Virginia-based interior designer Tracy Morris. Designers may be clocking the trend now, but some early devotees – including the likes of Kris Jenner and Oprah Winfrey – have been sleeping on it for years.

This becomes the anchoring focal point of the entire space,' Shea explains in her recent Instagram video, in which she walks through all the details of her own bedroom.

In Shea's case, her bedroom features two huge windows that make for the natural position for the bed. As Shea explains, 'With my headboard (Shea has the Walt Bed Tall Headboard in Praline Velvet), I have these two tall windows flanking where our bed goes. So whatever I choose, it’s really important that I get some height in the middle so it doesn’t feel like this big drop in the focal point between the height of my window and what’s happening between them.'

'We’re seeing an increase in requests for standout headboards and half tester bed canopies to instantly give a personal, cozy feel,' adds Cath Beckett, co-founder of Yellow London.

'We embrace interiors that focus on layered spaces and mixing classic features with modern touches. Rich textures, statement fabrics, and playful accents make bedrooms feel both luxurious and lived-in.'

Wall-mounted lights free up precious surface space, while their adjustable arms allow you to direct light exactly where it’s needed, making them both practical and elegant.

'Or for an alternative space-saving solution, consider adding a surprising and impactful design detail with pendant lights above your bedside tables, which will frame the bed, creating a zoned space within a bedroom,' Hollie adds.

'Comfort and proportion matter more than ever,' David continues. 'You want a headboard that supports you for reading or relaxing and feels appropriately scaled to the bed and ceiling height. Tactile yet durable fabrics such as bouclé, wool blends, and performance velvets will dominate as homeowners look for beauty that stands up to daily use. And in many cases, you can skip wall art altogether as the headboard becomes the artwork,' he adds.

Bedroom curtain trends have been quietly on the up for most of 2025 – but in 2026, it's not about the window at all.

Decorative drapes are being used to soften bedrooms, add movement, and introduce a sense of intimacy that hard surfaces alone can’t achieve. 'Curtains are no longer confined to the role of window dressing – they’ve become a versatile design statement,' says designer Rebecca Hughes, who designed this elegant bedroom with a soft pink curtain at the entryway to the ensuite bathroom, seen above. Heavy linens, velvets, and softly patterned textiles can enhance warmth and acoustics, while sheer and linen layers bring lightness and romance.

'We’re using them as soft space dividers, to frame cozy nooks, or to introduce a layer of texture and opulence through sumptuous fabrics,' Rebecca continues. 'When chosen thoughtfully, they merge form and function beautifully, transforming the atmosphere of a room while adding a sense of theater and intimacy.'

While carpet isn't typically something that is 'trending' – it's a practical, warm, timeless flooring no matter the year or season – but, recently, carpet has had a little bit of a makeover, and attention is well and truly on dramatic carpet ideas.

According to Jodie Hatton, design manager at Brintons, this carpet comeback is closely tied to color. 'Earthy neutrals, which gained momentum in 2025, will continue to rise in popularity in 2026 as we see a move toward richer, more cocooning color palettes,' she explains. 'Texture is also playing a huge role next year. Brushed wools, textured linens, and raw plaster are all rising because they diffuse light beautifully and soften the acoustics, making the bedroom feel grounded without adding clutter.'

'Rather than holding back, we’re seeing clients embrace bolder color, tactile finishes, and sculptural details to create spaces that feel personal and uplifting.'

Look at your closet space as somewhere to amp up the color in your bedroom. Everything from deep burgundy hues to color-drenched pastels that blend in with your walls is trending, as are closet curtains, statement millwork and trims, and unique hardware.

'Color-drenched joinery, curved shelving, and playful lighting all help add depth without overwhelming the room,' she adds. 'Thoughtfully designed zones, such as reading corners or compact dressing areas, allow bedrooms to work harder while still feeling calm and considered.'

Great for small spaces, children's rooms, and guest bedrooms, a nook bed (otherwise known as an alcove or box bed) has captivated designers and decorators alike. They not only maximize space by fitting into the architecture of the room but can also be customized with hidden (or on-display) storage and provide a cozy haven to retreat into.

London-based interior designer Tiffany Duggan, founder of Studio Duggan, sheds light on the allure of built-in bed nooks, noting: 'I do love a built-in bed nook. I love my nighttime routine, the hour or so before sleep that I can truly relax. And my bedside setup is a key player, it's where I house everything I need within easy reach – skincare, books, phone, drinks. I have my bedside tablescaping down to an art.

But I have never managed to perfect the bedroom lighting. I want something right there next to me so I can read and scroll and sip my tea, but it needs to be soft and compact. My bedside light just wasn't cutting it, and the visible wire wasn’t adding anything aesthetically.

I can't think of a purchase I’ve made recently that's changed a room more drastically (apart from the portable lamp I just bought for my bathroom). Lighting can totally change the feel of a room, especially at this time of year when we are all about the soft pools of cozy light. If I had known I could achieve such a luxurious effect without spending much or calling an electrician, I would have done this so much sooner.

Color plays a huge part in the atmosphere of a bedroom, especially when it comes to your guest space. You want the room to feel inviting, cozy, and relaxing, yet at the same time, make a design statement that leaves guests in awe.

And while you might think white is the safest choice for your guest bedroom color – it's classic, timeless, and neutral – designers say otherwise, preferring to use this occasional room as a place of bold design and experimentation.

Here's why they avoid the safe option in a guest bedroom, and recommend a bolder look instead – with their approach, your guest room will feel like a boutique hotel and become the talking point of your home.

We've all been there – deciding on the right decor and color palette for your guest bedroom and landing on the safe and comfortable choice of white. It feels clean, minimal, and free of judgment. But for designers, it's a color they say you should avoid.

'A guest room is the perfect place to take design risks. It’s a space where you can embrace color more experimentally and create a cozy, memorable retreat your guests will love,' says Heather French of French & French Interiors.

And, let's be honest, white doesn't do any of these things. There's nothing memorable or risky about this neutral hue. It just feels like a wasted opportunity to create a special design that wows your guests.

Think about the coziest, most impressive hotel rooms you've stayed in, like the bright, design-focused rooms in Hotel de la Boetie in Paris or the moodier schemes synonymous with Soho House. They become a pillar of luxury, with rooms that leave you inspired and captivated. It's an ethos you can bring to your own guest bedroom by ditching the white paint and replacing it with the right color palette.

'A guest room is a “jewel-box” space. Because it’s used in short, memorable bursts, not every day, it can carry more saturation without feeling overwhelming. Bold paint turns a spare room into a small experience: moody, cozy, and intentional, the way great boutique hotels make a stay feel special,' adds interior designer Ami McKay.

There's also a sense that your guest room is the space to try out that more experimental design that felt too bold for the main bedroom. In many ways, your guest bedroom is to your main bedroom what a powder room is to a primary bathroom.

'Guest bedrooms are a great place to play with color. You may be afraid to do something that ends up feeling too bold in your primary bedroom, or experimenting with wallpaper or a pattern that is a big adjustment. Use the guest bedroom as your guinea pig to pull yourself out of your comfort zone,' suggests Amber Guyton of Blessed Little Bungalow.

But if white isn't an option, what colors should you look to instead?

'I love jewel tones,' says Amber. 'A deep emerald green or navy blue is pretty universal and plays well with both neutrals and other colors. They also offer a calming palette that is rest-friendly and will make the room feel like a boutique hotel!'

There's a misconception that embracing a bolder scheme means you have to go for a bright, vibrant hue, but that isn't the case at all. In fact, one of the most favored approaches by designers is decorating with moody colors.

'Bold doesn’t have to mean bright. Look for hues with depth, tones that are a bit muddier yet still rich and saturated. Think moody, layered color rather than loud. And don’t forget the ceiling: painting it the same shade can transform a room from simple refresh to full-on design statement,' explains Heather.

'We’re loving Chappell Green by Farrow & Ball – it's a subdued blue-green that feels both cheerful and grounded. It strikes the perfect balance between welcoming and sophisticated,' she adds.

There's a reason these moodier colors appeal in a guest bedroom. 'Our brains associate darkness with sleep and “hibernation,” which is why moody bedrooms can be so restful. A guest room is the perfect place to be brave. You’ll give visitors a beautiful memory, and your home an extra layer of personality and texture, without sacrificing serenity,' explains Ami.

She also recommends looking to nature for guidance if you want to create a bolder look with timeless appeal. Deep, earthy tones offer that look while still feeling warm, cozy, and design-focused, such as Benjamin Moore's Dark Olive and Farrow & Ball's Cardamom.

'Deep olive, slate blue, rust, and terracotta are all saturated but timeless; they have grounding undertones that keep a room feeling calm, not chaotic. Texture also matters: layer natural woods, woven textiles, or brass accents to balance the pigment with warmth,' she explains.

You can also still embrace neutrals – just in a more elevated way than white. Think beige, taupe, and even terracotta hues color drenched in the guest suite. Or, you can take an entirely different approach with a statement bedroom wallpaper.

'I love Belarte Studio’s hand-painted wallpaper collections. There’s something soulful about the way they blur art and atmosphere. A softly washed, brush-stroked mural behind the bed brings boldness in a beautifully intentional way,' Ami notes.

'Rather than relying on pattern or pigment alone, their wallpaper creates movement and mood, turning a guest room into an experience that feels distinctive and unexpected.'

Avoiding white in your guest bedroom doesn't mean you have to adopt a completely different aesthetic from your usual design style. It's about creating a room that feels warm, cozy, and elevated – designing a space that creates an experience and wraps your guests in luxury and wonder, rather than a sense that they've been assigned your bland, unfinished spare room.

This is your sign to put down the white paint and embrace a bolder, more experimental look in your guest bedroom. 'Paint is temporary and can easily be changed,' reminds Amber. 'Don't be afraid to experiment and do something different!'

How you dress yourself and how you dress your house are, for the most part, from different design worlds. Yet an increasing number of leading interior designers are applying an approach that has its heart in fashion to their schemes – and in no place is this more evident than the way we style our bedrooms.

Fashion is full of rules many people are often ignorant of – but still enjoy subconsciously. The way that slim and voluminous forms combine, the lines that are formed through hems and tailoring, making legs look longer; the visual weight that big prints, patterns, and stripes have on small frames.

Interior designers are looking towards these cues – proportion, lines, finish, material – and applying them to create a look that means our bedrooms can be as tailored and measured as our sharpest of suits – with equally pleasing effects. And as with fashion, tailoring bedrooms comes with its own set of guidelines (and some products are perfect for it, as revealed in our new Tailored Bedroom capsule collection).

Rule 1. Prioritize structure and refinement

Structure and refinement in the bedroom layout is key to the tailored look. Furniture should look as if it’s been cut sharply to fit, with the role it plays in the wider room always in mind.

Start with a line-driven and sharp (rather than soft and flexible) approach to both the selection and positioning of key design elements. Pieces should not all shout at once, and nothing should be unnecessary.

The careful balancing of the individual pieces is vital, and contrast should be limited to one or two key moments, as Verity Woolf, interior designer and founder of Woolf Interior Architecture & Design, explains. 'This could be a bespoke headboard, a sculptural pendant light, or monolithic bedside tables in stone or lacquer. These interventions should carry weight, materially and visually, while maintaining total harmony.'

Rule 2. Balance with strong lines

It’s this balancing between the different impacts of bedroom elements that is key in ensuring a structured, precise arrangement. The look is all about strong architectural lines and structured upholstery.

Designers such as Christian Bense and Linda Boronkay have an eye for the tailored detail in their rooms, with leather-wrapped handles, headboards carefully proportioned to the wall, and a refined, smart finish – all structured, anything but soft.

Rule 3. Edit ruthlessly

Tailoring is as much about what you take out as what you leave in – so ruthless editing is important here. Leave space around key pieces to ensure the detailing can be appreciated, and remove anything that creates visual noise. The strength of the look comes from discipline.

Rule 4. Work with a considered palette

So, carefully arranged elements with sharp lines and everything complementing each other is the premise. But it’s only part of the overall tailored bedroom look. Color and pattern are, as in all aspects of design, critical.

Colors in tailored bedrooms borrow from fashion styles – shades that feel considered, not casual, such as charcoal, ecru, navy, and tobacco. These bedroom colors are not designed to shout, but instead are designed to create a restful, harmonious, and sophisticated effect. It’s not impossible to bring in an accent (using a chair, for instance), but visual noise should be minimized – this is more important in the bedroom than any other room in the house.

Rule 5. Control the patterns

The same goes for pattern. As Kit Kemp, (who in her role as creative director of Firmdale Hotels, has been responsible for some of our favorite ever bedroom designs) explains, when talking through her approach to combining patterns and prints. 'I will only use one large repeat, one small repeat, and possibly a smaller geometric, otherwise it won’t be a restful experience.'

Rule 6. Keep neatness and details sharp

Neatness is critical to the tailored bedroom look, of course. So ensure bedroom storage is sleek, fuss-free, and plentiful. Control and refinement apply to the fabrics, too – piping, crisp pleats, never messy. The details matter just as much – handles in aged brass or stitched leather can add sophistication, much like cufflinks on a shirt. Piping is key - the impression of things being perfectly formed and finished.

Rule 7. Layer lighting with intent

Bedroom lighting should be a mix of structure and softness, with either statement pendants or sculptural sconces balanced by low-level lamps to soften the edges. The play between form and atmosphere is essential to keep the scheme sharp but comfortable.

Rule 8. Think new approach, not trend-hopping

While tailoring bedrooms gives a sophisticated, boutique-hotel style look, this is not about signalling a new design trend. Tailoring has, of course, been around for centuries, and the application of its principles to interiors signals a new way of thinking about how we approach design. According to interior designer Lauren Saab, Soho Home's Ayesha Table Lamp is her best bedroom purchase to date. 'The Ayesha from Soho Home carves its presence from solid onyx, each piece marked with unique natural patterning,' she says. 'Light glows through the stone, wrapping the room in a warm halo. It is part sculpture, part light source, and adds a refined, collected feel to the space.'

Designer Joe Waroquier also highlighted a lamp as his best bedroom purchase – two matching antique chinoiserie lamps, in fact. 'Bedside lamps are an absolute must, and why not let them make a statement,' Joe tells me. 'They have elevated the room and have given the room a fresh 'New Romantic' feeling for the changes of seasons ahead.'

'The result is a layered, soulful interior that feels equally inspiring and restorative.'

Now, I might not have kids of my own, but I can imagine that relaxation is hard to come by when living in a house full of children. But once they move out, their empty rooms present an opportunity to create a calm and quiet oasis – a retreat room, if you will.

Designer Kieu Nguyen Smith made that possible for her client in the room above. 'Previously a teenager's bedroom, the client wanted a space for herself after her last child had left the nest. It became a quiet retreat where she could close the door, cozy up with a book, and finally have a purposeful space for her heirlooms and collectibles,' Kieu tells me.

Kieu and her team kept only the beams in this room, then color drenched the space in a soothing, deep gray paint. Kieu also added lots of storage to make this space not only a stylish retreat, but a functional space, too.

My dog is cold-blooded like me, so we both need our spot on the patio, and a dog bed is an almost permenant fixture in my backyard. But when I brought out her boring gray bed, it looked so out of place among the new summery sanctuary I was trying to create. So I started searching how I could bring this summer's biggest outdoor decorating trend to my dog's bed – and it didn't take long to find the perfect buy that's stylish, practical, and affordable.

I would honestly be happy with any of the colorways this bed has to offer. I went with yellow because I just bought towels from H&M's recent collaboration with Palm Heights, which was part of the inspiration behind my patio refresh. I love the blue for more of a classic coastal feel and I think I will pick up the beige and white version for indoor use.

It would seem everyone in the recent reviews has had a similar idea that this would make for the perfect patio dog bed. One reviewer says 'Perfect for my pups! They lay on it every day, soaking up the sun on our patio.' Another says, 'These pet beds are the best, especially for outside. My dogs have been using them for many years and I won't buy any other brand for outside.'

Many also note how well the bed has held up over time, even with larger dogs and dogs that like to 'dig' their beds (if you have one of these you know how quickly beds can become balls of fluff and strings of fabric).

I write and read a lot about luxury interior design, so naturally, I am a dog owner who wants her stuff to look as nice as mine. Her pet bed is a design decision, as well as a practical one. The new Jonathan Adler collection got all my team talking about this, a pet bed can take up as much room as a throw pillow, a blanket, or a piece of artwork, so picking one that works with your interiors makes sense.

In a world that constantly promotes overconsumption, I'm making a concerted effort to buy and own less, and the 'Would you buy it again' test is the perfect accompaniment. Not only has it helped save me money, but it has helped me to streamline my space, too.

One of the areas I struggled the most with keeping neat was my bedroom. My drawers were stuffed full of clothes, my floor-to-ceiling bookshelf was groaning under the weight of my collection, and my once-organized under-the-bed storage had become a dumping ground for clutter.

So, to get things back on track, I decided to try the 'Would you buy it again' test, a decluttering method I'd often heard recommended by pros, and have since adopted it across my entire home for good. Here's how it went, and exactly why organizational experts suggest using this simple trick.

What is the 'Would you buy it again test'?

Di Ter Avest, professional organizer at Diisorganized, explains, 'It's a super simple decluttering trick I love. You pick up an item and ask yourself, "If I saw this in a store today, would I buy it again, at full price?"

'It's a powerful tool that cuts right through the guilt or the "but maybe I'll use it someday" mindset, putting you in control. If the answer is no, it's a good sign that it's time to let it go, empowering you to make your living space truly yours.'

She's not the only pro who loves this technique, either. Tracy McCubbin, founder and CEO of dClutterfly, agrees, adding, 'I absolutely love the "would you buy it again" test for clutter.

'It does two things. First, that question forces you to evaluate whether the thing you bought was useful enough that you would buy it again. If not, it can automatically become clutter.

'Secondly, it really helps you evaluate your buying habits. If you wouldn’t buy it again, why did you buy it in the first place? It’s a great way to look at your consumption and also cut down on clutter.'

Where can you use the 'Would you buy it again' test?

Though I tested this decluttering method in my bedroom, the 'Would you buy it again' test isn't only suitable for decluttering your bedroom. In fact, say our pros, you can actually use it to declutter a home room by room.

'This method works everywhere,' assures Di. 'It's a comprehensive solution for decluttering your entire home. Your bedroom, bathroom drawers, kitchen gadgets, and even your holiday decorations.

'It's especially helpful in areas where you've collected a lot over time, like clothes, beauty products, or home decor. Basically, if it takes up space, you can ask yourself this question.'

And, as Tracy adds, if you do come across something you wouldn't buy again today, it doesn't mean you have to toss it immediately.

She explains, 'For example, if it's a face lotion that's half done, but you wouldn't buy it again, please finish it, or maybe use it on your legs if you don't like it on your face, before tossing.'

This is something I'm currently doing at the moment, finding ways to work through all my beauty products without wasting a drop.

'We want to clear clutter, but we don't want to be wasteful,' continues Tracy, and I agree.

I tried it

With the experts' assurances ringing in my ears, I decided to give it a go in my bedroom to tackle my underbed storage ideas.

I recently upgraded my underbed purse storage to a large plastic box, and use the same, just like the HOMZ Clear Plastic Storage Bins with Lids available at Amazon, to organize my shoes and keep them free from dust.

The problem, though, was that the boxes were literally overflowing, and as I'm currently in the process of updating my wardrobe and shoe collection, I knew it was time to declutter and organize my shoes once and for all, some of which had been embarrassingly collecting dust under there for over five years.

With the simple 'Would I buy this again?' mantra, though, it was incredibly easy to determine what to keep and what should go, putting any that were particularly past their prime straight in a trash bag, and trying on all the other pairs to decide what I could part with.

Then, I was able to decide whether to donate or sell the decluttered items. With the 'would you buy it again test' at the helm, I quickly got rid of six pairs. I even found a large sunhat under the bed that I had bought during lockdown and worn only once. Straight in the donation bag it went.

Importantly, says Di, the reason this simple trick is so effective when it comes to decluttering a bedroom with too much stuff is because it's a straightforward approach that helps you be honest with yourself.

'I use it with clients all the time, especially when they're feeling stuck or unsure,' she says. 'It makes decisions easier because you're focusing on how you feel about the item now, not what it cost, or where it came from, making it a feasible solution for your clutter issues.

'We often keep stuff because we already paid for it or it used to serve a purpose – but if we wouldn't spend money on it again today, that usually means it's not adding value to our lives anymore. Plus, it's a gentle way to rethink shopping habits going forward.'

This is particularly relevant for me at the moment, as I strive to embrace the underconsumption trend.

My verdict

Without exaggeration, the 'Would you buy it again' test is hands down one of the most effective, and simplest, tricks I've ever tried to be more ruthless when decluttering, and rethink my spending habits at the same time.

Now, I'll be using it whenever I spot any signs it's time to declutter my home, in my bedroom, bathroom, and beyond.

As Ben Soreff, professional organizer at House to Home Organizing, says, 'When it comes to clutter, the most important step but one which most people skip, is the review. We don’t want to shove our bedroom items in the closet or drawers. That may give you back your surfaces, but it isn't organizing.'

This, unfortunately, was something I was frequently guilty of, which had historically made it all the more difficult to organize my drawers and clear visual clutter in my bedroom for good.

This is why I found the 'Would you buy it again' test to be so effective, as I was able to assess my belongings for many parameters with one question, rather than shoving it all away and allowing hidden clutter to build up unchecked.

Picture this: you're staying at a luxury hotel for the weekend, and the focal point of your bedroom is a beautiful, freestanding bathtub. It's truly become the pinnacle of a luxe space, but is it actually a good idea in your own home?

Over the years, we've seen many different bath ideas rise to the top of trends, but freestanding designs have remained a favorite and timeless choice. But is introducing one to your bedroom ideas a step too far?

We've asked interior designers for their expert opinions on the rising trend for bathtubs in bedrooms to find out if this is the new way to create a luxurious design or an impractical, logistical nightmare.

Should you put a bathtub in your bedroom?

When you're remodeling your home, it's easy to get carried away with adding all of your dream features, especially when it comes to the main bedroom. Perhaps a bath is part of your evening ritual, so you want to give it a more prominent spot, or maybe a bath won't fit in your ensuite, so it's the best alternative. But do designers recommend it?

'If space allows, I always encourage our clients to consider including a bath in the bedroom. There is something so serene about the idea. It brings a sense of sanctuary and calm, much like a beautifully designed hotel suite,' says interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

'It feels like the ultimate luxury, especially when positioned near a window with countryside views. If privacy is needed, a simple sheer curtain works beautifully. Café-style curtains are a favourite of mine as they add softness without blocking too much natural light,' she adds.

And while it feels like a new way to make a bedroom more luxurious, this trend for bedroom baths isn't quite as new as you might think. 'It can be traced back to the Middle Ages when many of the rich lords would have a bath in their bedroom,' says Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs.

'Fast forward to the 1990s, and the trend was revived by boutique hotels placing free-standing roll-top baths at the end of huge beds. They are at last becoming a desirable feature; separate bathrooms are out, hello open plan bathing,' she adds.

There's a ritualistic element that makes a bathtub in a bedroom feel so luxurious. There's a theme of relaxation and rewinding, a focus on self-care, which is why, where architecture allows, designers love this feature.

'There is a softness in blurring the boundaries between bathing and sleeping. When the layout allows for it, a bathtub in the bedroom invites a different kind of rhythm. One that privileges pause over productivity,' says Britt Zunino, of Studio DB.

'In our upstate home, the bathtub becomes both a sculptural focal point and a ritual object, placed intentionally in front of expansive glass to bring the outdoors into the most intimate parts of the day. It creates a direct line between rest and restoration. The kind of quiet luxury that feels earned, not ornamental.'

But the other reason a bathtub in a bedroom works so well is that it's always a cozier room. It's warmer, softer, and always feels more relaxing than a bathroom that's filled with harder, colder materials.

'Bedrooms are often more layered and comforting than bathrooms, which is why I think there has been a rise in people choosing to include a bath in the bedroom. It turns the space into something more like a grand suite rather than just a place to sleep,' says Lauren, who has designed several bedrooms with freestanding tubs.

What functional elements do people need to consider?

While your thoughts might immediately go to the luxury side of a bedroom bathtub, there are a lot of functional considerations to think about. For example, making sure the area is watertight to avoid any plumbing disasters.

'Functionality is just as important as how a space looks. We often create a dedicated zone for the bath within the room, perhaps with a slight change in floor level or flooring material. In one project, we used wooden flooring beneath the bath, which was practical. The rest of the room had a different finish,' explains Lauren.

If you have your heart set on introducing a bath to your sleep space, it's important to get the planning right. From plumbing to materials, there's a lot to consider if you want this to be a usable feature.

'It starts with good planning,' says Britt, who also emphasizes the need for properly thought-out ventilation, light control, and privacy. 'Ensure there is adequate plumbing access and proper waterproofing, especially around the tub, [and] choose durable, natural materials like stone or sealed wood that can age beautifully.'

It's also really important to consider how and who will use the bathtub. 'When it comes to family living and splashing children, a separate bathtub in a family bathroom is most likely a must. Bedrooms tend to have electrical equipment, expensive items, and soft furnishings that don’t mix very well with bubbles or water,' adds Keeley.

How to style a bathtub in a bedroom

Designing and styling a bathtub in a bedroom is a bit different from that of a bathroom. A bedroom is a cozier, softer space, so the way you style your bath and bathing essentials needs to feel cohesive and at home in it.

'Styling should feel gentle and intentional. A stool beside the bath can be a practical and beautiful addition, ideal for shampoo bottles or folded towels. A bath tray is another useful detail, especially where built-in storage is limited. Texture is key here. Natural materials, layered fabrics, and soft lighting all help to make the room feel calm, warm, and luxurious,' says Lauren.

'Lighting is also worth thinking about. In a bedroom, lighting tends to be softer and more atmospheric than in a traditional bathroom, which helps to create that spa-like feeling,' she adds.

It's also a good idea to stay away from anything that feels to utilitarian – instead, introduce soft lines, cozy materials, and a scheme that feels cohesive with the other decor in your bedroom.

'Keep it quiet and elemental. In our space, we paired a soft, rounded tub with a sculptural marble table and a simple vessel of cut stems. A boucle chair adds warmth and texture, and a neutral palette of white, cream, and natural stone grounds the space without overwhelming it,' says Britt.

It's the pieces you add around the bath that are key to making it feel at home in your sleep space. You want to blur the lines between sleeping and bathing areas, so bring in decor and scents that do just that.

'Everything should feel collected, not decorated. A well-placed towel, a book, a bloom. Restraint is what makes the scene feel lived-in and considered. Include nearby surfaces such as a pedestal or low table for candles, books, or a towel. The key is to treat the bathtub as furniture, not as a fixture. It should feel integrated into the language of the room, not an afterthought,' Britt explains.

Essentially, you need to ensure that the space around your tub is functionally sound to hold up to water, but feel lived-in, cozy, and like it belongs in your bedroom. 'Think tactile materials like stone, plaster, linen, and wood. Let light be a through line, and curate objects with both utility and poetry,' she notes.

So, if you were wondering if you should put a bathtub in a bedroom, the answer is a resounding yes, as long as you have the space and ensure the area is perfectly prepped for it. Not only is it the best way to create a luxury bedroom, but it's also a luxury hotel interior design lesson we should all be taking home with us.
