The Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge promises to be the first vacuum-mop combo that can vacuum without mopping. Usually, these appliances can only do both at the same time, as the roller is soaked in water or a cleaning solution to sanitize the floors.

It makes sense, then, to be able to utilize the suction for other tasks. Bissell advises you to do any vacuuming first, then mop afterwards to avoid wetting your area rugs. 'Carpet' isn't specifically listed as a suitable floor type for the OmniForce Edge, so it's only designed for cleaning hard floors and vacuuming area rugs.

Otherwise, it has all the useful features you'll find in any vacuum-mop. A spinning roller releases fresh cleaning solution onto the floor as it scrubs and mops the floors, vacuuming debris and removing stains in the process. It's perfect if you prefer to clean your floors without streaks.

It's cordless with a 30-minute runtime, and you control it using three buttons on the handle for power, moisture, and suction level.

All you have to do is fill the clean tank with water and solution, click it back into place, and turn it on. The dirty water tank separates liquids and solids inside, too, and although it's a little gross, emptying the vacuum is a quick process.

What is the Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge like to use?

Like many Bissell floorcare products, the CrossWave OmniForce Edge is straightforward to use. It took less than two minutes to get familiar with its functions, and the simple display clearly shows battery life, moisture, and suction levels.

The device feels sturdy yet remains highly maneuverable, gliding smoothly across floors thanks to rubber wheels that protect delicate surfaces – an ideal vacuum for hardwood floors.

Plus, its charging dock offers a self-cleaning cycle that rinses the brushroll and internal parts, helping reduce bacteria buildup and unpleasant odors.

Strangely, the OmniForce Edge lacks a self-drying feature. Models like the Dreame H14 Pro include a heated drying cycle to prevent mold, so Bissell’s choice to omit this is surprising, especially since drying floors quickly is a major selling point for this vacuum-mop. Because of this, you can’t vacuum rugs until the roller is fully dry, which can take most of a day. While there’s a slot on the charging base to remove and air-dry the roller, a faster, low-effort heated drying cycle would be much better.

The vacuum also offers only one quick self-cleaning mode, but even after running it twice, I found the roller was still dirty. Other brands have perfected this feature, so it’s disappointing that Bissell hasn’t prioritized self-cleaning and drying.

The 30 fl. oz. clean tank includes clear markings for water and Bissell cleaning solution, but the solution runs out quickly, and you don’t get much to start with. After just five minutes of vacuum-mopping, I’d used about a third of the tank.

In our test center, I used five standardized substances to assess the Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge's ability to clean messes with varying properties:

• 1 tablespoon ketchup
• 1 tablespoon mustard
• 2 tablespoons lumpy tomato and veg pasta sauce
• 1 egg, dropped from 5 feet
• 1 cup of cereal and milk
• Additional test: Half cup of lentils to test dry vacuuming

Ketchup and pasta sauce are usually the simplest messes for a vacuum-mop to tackle. The OmniForce Edge cleaned them up quickly but did smear some sauce around, requiring a second pass to fully remove the residue. Other vacuum-mops I’ve tested have managed this in just one go.

The mustard was also spread around a little, and took a bit longer to clean than the tomato-based stains. Again, this is weaker performance than what I've seen in others, but the Bissell costs around half the price of those that clean in one (like the Tineco Floor One S7 Pro, for example).

Surprisingly, the CrossWave OmniForce Edge vacuumed up the broken egg in one smooth motion – no easy feat, since thick, sticky egg and shell fragments often cause blockages and are one of the hardest cleaning tasks to master.

However, its performance slipped when tackling milk and cereal; it couldn’t pick up the cereal pieces at first and just pushed them ahead until I crushed them with the roller. Though it took longer than expected, it eventually cleaned everything up.

For dry vacuum testing, I scattered half a cup of lentils along the threshold between linoleum and carpet. The OmniForce Edge picked up everything in a single pass, with suction so strong on carpet you could feel it gripping the fabric – truly impressive. If it weren’t for the lack of self-drying, this would be one of the best multi-surface vacuums available for under $400.

I also tested the Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge at Bristol ARC, a local cat and dog shelter, to see how well it can handle muddy stains and busy messes from an establishment with high foot traffic.

I learned that it's excellent at light mopping while leaving the floors dry 1-2 minutes later, but it wasn't the best at stain removal. Granted, some of the stains were about three years old, but while I could see the floor was visibly cleaner, the stains didn't budge at all.

The pet shelter had a group visiting that day, leaving behind arts and crafts messes. The OmniForce Edge managed to clear most of the debris but struggled with a few stains that seemed fairly simple to clean, like the one pictured above.

Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge: Setup and maintenance

Setup was simple – just attach the handle, wand, and main vacuum unit. I charged the battery from 18% to full, which took a bit over three hours, and then it was ready to go.

Placing the vacuum on the charging dock starts a quick two-minute self-cleaning cycle. However, unlike some other models, there’s no deep clean, and without self-drying, you’ll have to wait quite a while before vacuuming the carpet again.

There’s also a dedicated Bissell FreshStart solution for cleaning the machine, but I found it a bit unnecessary since there’s usually leftover cleaning solution inside already, making it less practical to replace with the special formula.

Emptying the vacuum is straightforward. You detach the dirty tank, throw the solids into the trash, then pour away the liquid.

How does the Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge compare?

The CrossWave OmniForce Edge costs $399.99 at Bissell at full price, and is often discounted to $299.99. This is $100-200 cheaper than other models I've tested, but I've learned that the cleaning is less effective, so there's a trade-off of performance against price.

Should you buy the Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge?

The Bissell CrossWave OmniForce Edge is a nifty, user-friendly floor cleaner that can vacuum and mop simultaneously, or just vacuum. It's a neat feature in the market, being able to utilize the motor's suction to tackle area rugs as well as hard floors, and the small, sleek device would look great in any home.

But it's certainly less effective compared to other, more expensive vacuum-mop combos I've tested. It struggled to remove some stains, pushed residue around, and struggled when picking up large pieces. If money's tight, this is a great entry into the vacuum-mop cleaning world. But if you could spend a little more, I'd go for the better ones.

Ramshad Nikbakht (Both Corr.), co-owner of Southwest Rug Cleaning, says, 'When it comes to rugs: size matters! Ensure the rug fits comfortably in your washing machine. Only wash rugs that you can easily remove when wet, as they can absorb up to five times their weight in water and become extremely heavy. For convenience, it’s best to stick to rugs no larger than 4x6 feet.'

Vanessa Bossart, owner of GreenTerra Cleaning Service, says, 'Don't forget that it's not just about the rug – overloading the washer can damage the machine too. Giving your rug a good shake or vacuum before washing to remove loose dirt and debris is another way to care for your machine, and avoid clogged filters.'

Steven Ip, founder of Cleanzen Boston Cleaning Services, says, 'Always start by checking the care label. Rugs made of cotton, polyester, or other synthetic materials are typically machine washable, while wool, silk, or jute rugs should be hand cleaned or professionally cleaned. Rugs with rubber or adhesive backings may not hold up well in the machine, either, as the backing can deteriorate.'

Nikbakht says, 'For colorful rugs, my top tip is to test the rug's dyes before washing. Simply mix a small amount of detergent with water, then blot a discreet area of the rug with a clean towel to see if the colors bleed. If you notice color transfer on the towel you should avoid washing your rug and hire a professional. Having said this, if you do decide to take on the risk, add some color catchers to your wash for extra protection.'

Nikbakht recommends Shout Color Catchers for Laundry, available from Amazon – dye-trapping sheets that help to avoid colors running in the washer.

Ip adds, 'For best results pre-treat any stains with a gentle stain remover or a mild soap solution, letting it sit for 15-20 minutes before washing. I'd recommend Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle, available from Amazon, which is non-toxic and scented with essential oils.'

3. Cycle

Choosing the right washing cycle and detergent is essential for protecting your rug.

Bossart says, 'Always opt for cold water to avoid shrinking or loosening fibers. Never wash in hot water unless specified on the care label. Use a gentle or delicate cycle to protect the rug’s fibers and backing. Avoid high spin speeds, as they can stress the rug’s structure.

'Use a mild detergent, preferably one designed for delicate fabrics, to prevent harsh chemicals from damaging the rug. Avoid using fabric softener, as it can leave residue on the fibers and reduce the rug’s absorbency and texture.'

3. Use microfiber dusters on decor

Microfiber cloths are the soft and unsung hero of home cleaning, and they're brilliant for dusting around holiday decor too, says Galia Ivanova, professional cleaner and owner of Cleaning Estimate.

She says, 'Use a flexible microfiber duster to clean around decorations – it's gentle and grabs dust without knocking things over. I love the OXO Microfiber Extendable Duster (available at Amazon) for this.'

She says, 'Once all those shiny decorations are up, a lint roller works wonders to pick up scattered glitter from ornaments or decorations without spreading it everywhere.' Or, as cleaning expert Ivanova notes, 'Duct tape (such as The Original Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape available at Walmart) works in a pinch too,' and you probably have some lying around at home. After all, unlike most things, it is an essential household item to keep in your junk drawer.

And, if you prefer the easy route, 'Skip the tinsel and glitter unless you plan to find sparkly surprises until next Christmas,' says cleaning expert Edelman.

5. Vacuum hard to reach areas

Alex Varela, cleaning expert and team manager at Dallas Maids, says, 'I recommend a handheld vacuum cleaner with different nozzles to help you reach these areas. As cleaning expert Ivanova says, 'Sweep them up with a handheld brush (such as the Dust pan Broom available at Amazon) first,' and pop them in a sturdy trash bag, such as the Hefty Ultra Strong Tall Kitchen Drawstring Trash Bags available at Target.

'Then, vacuum using a hose or hardwood attachment to avoid clogs,' she adds. 'The Shark® Clean & Empty Cordless Stick Vacuum (available at Shark) is my go-to for stubborn needles.'

I was intrigued to get my hands on the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro and find out what it's capable of. I already have one of the best vacuums for pet hair so, naturally, a carpet cleaner has to be up to the task of deep cleaning my floors, too.

I'm Homes & Gardens' home tech editor, and I review vacuums and floorcare products almost every day. I tested the Bissell in my own home with a set of measured substances, and in a local animal shelter to see how it handles the ultimate source of mess: pets.

Setting up the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro

The Bissell ProHeat 2X took longer to setup than any other cleaning appliance I've used. It required a screwdriver (that's not included) to attach the carry handle to the main body, it took around 20 minutes in total.

Although it was a slow setup, I appreciated that this meant it was packaged in a much more compact box.

Included in the box were: carpet cleaner, hose in a carry bag, handle, water tanks, water tank handle, three cleaning attachments and three cleaning solutions.

Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro: Design and features

The ProHeat 2X works just like any carpet cleaner with a couple of useful additions. On the floorhead there's a Clean Shot spout on the side, and if you press the button with your foot, it'll shoot out cleaning solution to pre-treat stains. Pre-treating stains is one of the golden rules of stain removal and especially makes a big difference with older and tougher stains.

There's a trigger on the handle for wet cleaning – press it and cleaning solution will release from the 11-inch floorhead into the carpet. Bissell recommends two wet passes using cleaning solution then two dry passes to remove the dirty water.

It also comes with a set of attachments that have you covered for different cleaning tasks. The stair tool rotates for three different uses: one with angled brush bristles, one with straight bristles, and one without.

But the main attachment is the 2-in-1 pet upholstery tool. It has its own filter, a switch for wet or dry cleaning, and green rubber bristles to loosen dirt and stains from carpet and furniture. This tool can spray cleaning solution on an area and actually suck up pet messes directly (but it's recommended to scoop most of it away first).

What is the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro like to use?

As ever with a Bissell cleaner, the ProHeat 2X is a breeze to use. Aside from the long-winded assembly, everything about this carpet cleaner is straightforward, with clear visuals on the appliance to know what to use and when. You don't have to worry about switching between cleaning modes, you either use the floorhead for large areas or any of the attachments for furniture and spot cleans.

The water tanks slot in and out effortlessly, with no fiddling around or finding the right angle. The buttons are all easy to access while using it, too, which is a very welcomed design quality to avoid bending down or struggling with parts.

Clean Shot is super straightforward to use and a thoughtful feature from Bissell, to better tackle any tough stains that won't budge from normal cleaning. Press it to shoot a small stream of cleaning solution about four inches from the floorhead onto any stains, then press again to stop. It's a nice touch to be able to apply solution without having to attach the hose or mix it yourself in a separate container and pour it on.

The ProHeat 2X really shines is in its attachments. The pet upholstery tool can capture small solids with its own filter while the liquid feeds back into the dirty tank. Being able to spray solution in a handheld tool also gives great freedom when spot cleaning or dealing with tough furniture stains.

It weighs just 17.5 lbs, which is around the average weight of the best upright vacuums, but around 3 lbs lighter than your average carpet cleaner so it isn't too demanding to swivel around the house. It makes around 81.5 decibels of noise, which is similar to a hairdryer or blender, but pretty standard for a carpet cleaner.

It's sturdy, with a long cord to reach far into the house, and a small lever by the feet for press when you need to recline it (helping to avoid you doing so by accident). It's all designed to work naturally with the body as you move around the home.

My only complaint is that a lot of water dribbles out of the machine once you stop using it. Sure, you can wipe it away if it's a hard floor, but if it's on carpet then that area of the carpet might need cleaning again. It can also be a problem if you have hardwood floors; as I discussed in the best way to mop hardwood floors, letting any moisture sit on the surface can damage the panels. If you finish using the ProHeat 2X and leave it there without checking underneath, there could be a puddle of liquid sat there for days or weeks.

Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro's performance on cleaning tests

I tested the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro in a local pet shelter, Bristol ARC, and my own home using standardized substances. I tested it alongside the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam.

The first cleaning test was on barrier matting at the staff entrance to the pet shelter. It's a high traffic area with rough carpeting to capture dirt from people's shoes – and it hadn't been cleaned in over a week. I vacuumed the carpet beforehand, then the Bissell Pro Heat 2X took care of the rest.

I deep cleaned the mat in just 5-10 minutes and I saw how incredible the suction is from the speed at which is was pulling up murky water. It was also a great opportunity to test out the Clean Shot. It works exactly as described, maintaining its shooting distance for you to accurately aim it at specific spots.

I then took it to some carpet that had been stained for more than two years by the previous owner's dog. The stains were incredibly tough as the area also has high foot traffic, so every time somebody would walk across the floor, the stains would become more embedded into the carpet.

I gave it its best go, repeatedly doing wet and dry passes as tackling stains older than two years means going back and forth a lot, but I saw instant success. After two full dirty water tanks, I was still not quite able to get the last of the stains out. They weren't super visible from afar but you could see them with a closer look.

Although this was an incredible attempt for such old stains, I tried to clear the rest using the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam, and it was able to finish the job. The HydroSteam works similarly to the ProHeat 2X but with the addition of a steam cleaner that uses heat and moisture to really break down stuck-on dirt.

I also tested the Bissell ProHeat 2X in my own home using a half cup of cola, a quarter cup of red wine and a quarter cup of marinara sauce. I created one set of stains to set for a couple hours, then created another set when it was time to clean to test both new and old substances.

I used the stair tool and the pet upholstery tool to see how well the spot cleaning abilities were, and they didn't disappoint. It wasn't the quickest, but all of the old and new stains were cleaned in no more than 10 total passes from the cleaning tools. I found that the upholstery tool worked best to start with, then the stair tool is great for getting the final bits as the brushes can completely agitate the carpet when you move back and forth.

Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro: Cleaning and maintenance

All of the parts are removable and washable, including the smaller cleaning tools that can be taken apart for easier cleaning. I will say that the water tanks have quite small nozzles, so getting inside to properly scrub them clean is a challenge. But cleaning with hot water and dish soap should do the trick, even if it isn't a deep clean.

The floorhead cover easily pops open and you can clean inside and remove any debris that's been collected in there.

How does the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro compare?

I tested the ProHeat 2X alongside the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam. Both are absolutely excellent cleaners, but the Revolution HydroSteam wins in comparison thanks to its steam cleaning function. This means it's more able to break down dirt that's stuck to carpet fibers, as shown in its ability to clean the two-year-old stains that the ProHeat 2X couldn't quite handle. It does cost around $130 more however so, if comparing the two, it's worth weighing up how often you'll need to be cleaning incredibly tough, dried stains.

Another one of our favorites is the Shark CarpetXpert which shares almost all the features of the ProHeat 2X. Both can handle pet mess with their own tools, clean carpets exceptionally well, and are designed thoughtfully with easy-to-use features. They also retail for a similar price.

The Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro is absolutely worth considering for your next carpet cleaner. It deep cleans carpets easily and efficiently, with intuitive features like Clean Shot that just make sense to have in a cleaning appliance. It can remove dirty liquid rapidly from your floors and takes around eight hours for them to dry.

I've seen better performance in other carpet cleaners, but for the price this is an incredibly capable machine that will leave your floors fresher for years to come.

Bissell is one of the leading brands in this market so I was excited to get my hands on the Revolution HydroSteam, a dual steam cleaner and carpet cleaner that's been a brand staple for years.

I tested the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam in my own home and in a busy local animal shelter, to find out how well it fares alongside the best vacuums for pet hair.

Unboxing the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam

The Revolution HydroSteam came in a relatively large box but one that's smaller than most upright vacuums. Included in the box were: the Revolution HydroSteam, handle, clean water tank, upper body, and three cleaning solutions. Many models will come with a hose and attachments, but I already had some from a previous cleaner Bissell had sent to me.

Assembling it was almost instant. I attached the upper body, handle, then clean water tank. No screwdriver was needed unlike with the Bissell Pro Heat 2x Revolution Pet Pro.

Design and features of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam

Bissell states this is 'the only carpet cleaner that uses HydroSteam Technology,' which is a combination of carpet cleaning and steam cleaning. While it's easy for a manufacturer to say their product is the only one to use their own special tech, this feature actually is incredibly rare to find in a carpet cleaner. It's what sets the Revolution HydroSteam apart from others.

Most carpet cleaners use suction and cleaning solutions to deep clean carpets. The Revolution HydroSteam does this while also using hot, targeted steam to loosen tough stains and any dirt that's deeply embedded within the carpet fibers.

Aside from that, it works similarly to what you'd expect from any carpet cleaner. At the handle there are two buttons – one to turn it on, and another to switch between cleaning modes – as well as a trigger to release the cleaning liquid.

The cleaning modes include: Steam Pretreat, Steamwash Max and Quick Dry. With Steam Pretreat you can penetrate food and drinks stains on carpets by slowly passing over them while releasing steam. Then, use one of the two cleaning modes to wash the carpets. Steamwash Max is the complete cleaning performance while Quick Dry uses less solution if you need dry floors sooner.

It also has a hose attachment with a selection of tools, which varies depending on which bundle you buy, but the hose doesn't utilize the steam function. So, while you can use this for spot cleaning, you won't get as much cleaning power as with the main floorhead.

What is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam like to use?

One thing I absolutely love about Bissell cleaners is how intuitively they're designed. While the user manual is helpful, you can easily figure out how to use it and what everything does yourself. There's a button by your feet to depress the cleaner when in use, the clean and dirty water tanks pop in and out with effortless ease, and the cleaning modes are explained at the handle. It's clear that everything's designed to be as user-friendly as possible.

Using the Revolution HydroSteam is as simple as using one of the best upright vacuums. Turn it on, push it forward and back (slowly works best) and you're left with a clean floor. It's quite satisfying too, as you can see visible steam coming from the floorhead as it leaves a dark, clean finish where you've cleaned.

When holding the trigger to release the cleaning solution, you can see the clear, clean liquid running through the floorhead. Then, when doing dry passes, the water turns a murky brown as it sucks away the dirt from the floor. It shows that, no matter how often you vacuum carpet, it'll never be completely clean without a carpet cleaner.

I will say that the Revolution HydroSteam is heavier than what you'd expect from a vacuum (it weighs 22.5 lbs compared to the typical 16-17 lbs of the best upright vacuums), which isn't an issue when cleaning, but can be cumbersome when going up and down stairs.

Also, as it primarily uses liquid, it can be beneficial to carry it over spots that you're not looking to clean as the floorhead is often left wet. Doing this around the house with such a heavy appliance could easily be too taxing for some.

It's also incredibly loud at 84 decibels (as loud as a food blender), but that's no surprise as carpet cleaners reach around 80 decibels on average anyway.

Bissell Revolution HydroSteam's performance on cleaning tests

I used two tests to assess the cleaning performance of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam: carpet cleaning with different substances in my home, and cleaning the floors of a pet shelter to deal with pet mess and old stains.

At the pet shelter, Bristol Animal Rescue Centre, I immediately noticed how powerful of a cleaner this is. On the day I was testing, the carpets hadn't been cleaned in over a week, and there were even some stains that were more than two years old. It was the perfect environment to test what Bissell's team referred to as 'the Bissell.'

In the pet shelter, I tested the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam alongside the Bissell Pro Heat 2X Revolution Pet Pro so I could easily compare the two's performance.

I started with entrance barrier matting – the thick, rough carpeting style that's designed for high foot traffic. This material is notoriously difficult to clean but the Revolution HydroSteam did a stunning job. I pre-treated the entire area before cleaning on Steamwash Max mode. As per Bissell's guidance, I did two full passes with the cleaning solution then two passes without to remove the dirty liquid. It worked just as advertised, and the staff walking through the entrance noted that it had never looked so clean.

I then tackled an upstairs area that had two-year-old stains from a dog belonging to the charity's previous owner. As people were coming in and out of the office every day, these stains had been pushed further into the carpet over the years they'd been there.

The Revolution HydroSteam was able to clear all of them. It took almost an hour, and I had to repeatedly re-clean the stains as I went, but they were cleaned eventually. This is the kind of cleaning power you'd expect from a professional, and it was as simple as using a vacuum cleaner with cleaning solution.

As I tested the Revolution HydroSteam alongside the Pro Heat 2X Revolution Pet Pro, I divided the floor into two halves. But as good as the Pro Heat 2X Revolution Pet Pro was, it wasn't quite able to completely clean the stains, so I used the Revolution HydroSteam to finish cleaning the entire floor.

I vacuumed the entire floor before using the carpet cleaner (as it's not equipped to deal with solids), but by the time I'd finished carpet cleaning, there was a thick layer of pet hair inside the Revolution HydroSteam's floorhead. I found it useful that all the hair had collected in this easy-to-remove spot in the floorhead, and it goes to show how powerful the cleaning is to remove hair that a vacuum cleaner couldn't.

In my home tests, I used a quarter cup of red wine, a half cup of cola and a half cup of marinara sauce. All three have different consistencies and staining properties so they work well to test the carpet cleaner's abilities. I poured one set of stains to set for a couple hours then a second set of stains to clean up straight after.

The Revolution HydroSteam cleared away every stain, new and old, in no more than two passes. There was no residue from the red wine, cola or sauce afterwards. I was expecting to have to use the hose attachment for more focused cleaning but I didn't have to.

From my own mistake, and not remembering the golden rules of stain removal, I tested two mustard stains (a quarter cup), before realizing that mustard is not a stain that a carpet cleaner should deal with. Brushing and movement push the stain further into the carpet, so the Revolution HydroSteam, with its floorhead brushroll and brushed attachments, is not equipped for this. The mustard stains are still there now.

Cleaning and maintenance of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam

The clean and dirty water tanks easily slots in and out again by grabbing the handles. Then you can remove the lids, empty them and rinse them with clean water and dish soap before letting them air dry.

The opening is also wide enough for you to scrub with a sponge, except for two thin tubes in the dirty tank which, if you wanted to deep clean, you would need a tube cleaner such as this cheap brush set from Amazon.

The floorhead has a cover that pops out by pressing two buttons at either side, so you can remove any debris that's been captured and clean the internal parts.

How does the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam compare?

Our current favorite carpet cleaner is the Shark CarpetXpert. Like the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam, it's easy to use, easy to clean, and does an incredible job cleaning the floor. At full price it's $100 cheaper than the Bissell but it doesn't come with any steaming capabilities, so it's a great alternative if you rarely have to clean any tough, dried stains. If you do, I'd recommend paying the extra for the Bissell.

The Revolution HydroSteam is one of Bissell's top upright carpet cleaners, and there are alternatives priced more than $100 less. The ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro, which I tested at the same time, costs $130 less, but it wasn't as strong of a cleaner than the Revolution HydroSteam. At times, I had to rely on the Revolution HydroSteam to clean what the ProHeat couldn't.

The Revolution HydroSteam is also a hefty machine. If you don't have loads of floor space, or you're only occasionally cleaning up stains and spills, I'd also recommend going for a spot cleaner like the Shark MessMaster or the Bissell Little Green Max.

Bissell Revolution HydroSteam: Verdict

It may be more expensive than other carpet cleaners out there, but the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam truly is one of the best. Its unique steaming feature breaks down dirt and tough stains to make them easier to clean, and you can use this whenever you're passing over an area of the carpet that needs extra cleaning power. It was able to clean deeply ingrained pet stains that were more than two years old.

It's also incredibly user-friendly in true Bissell fashion, with parts and features that are quick to grasp and effortless to use. Emptying and cleaning the machine takes little work, and you even get a hose and a series of attachments for any spot cleaning.

I've been a professional cleaner and operations manager at Spekless for years. Even when I'm off duty, I can't help but spot dirty areas in homes that many people miss. Here are my top five to watch out for in your dining room and what to do to get them sparkling ahead of your festivities.

1. Sticky floors under the table

Food and drink spills that aren’t cleaned right away dry and leave behind sticky residues. The area under the table is most often overlooked during regular cleaning of hard floors.

High foot traffic in this area can also grind spills further into the floor, making them harder to remove. 2. Crumb-filled chair cushions

6 couch cleaning mistakes you might be making

'We see these blunders all the time, and they can lead to some serious upholstery heartbreak,' says Rocky Vuong, founder of Neatbrite.

1. Disregarding manufacturer care instructions

When it comes to cleaning your couch, the first place you should be looking for advice is the manufacturer's guide, specifically the one for your model.

Daniel Anderson, professional cleaner and CEO of GoRubbishGo says, 'Many homeowners have a poor habit of neglecting the instructions provided by the manufacturer for cleaning, which in turn causes inappropriate methods or materials to be used that can spoil the fabric.

'Never forget to look at the care label of your sofa. It gives a brief overview of what should and what should not be done when cleaning. For example, if the label is marked “W”, it means, “water-based” cleaners are allowed. If it is marked “S” then use solvent-based cleaners.'

2. Not spot-testing cleaning products

Some products can lead to upholstery discoloration and damage, so always find a hidden part of your couch to test the cleaning product on first before getting stuck in.

For example, if you want to wash your couch cushion covers, remove them and test your cleaning product on a small spot which is hidden from view when the cushions are on the couch. On the couch itself, try it low down at the back if your usual placement is against a wall, or look underneath for a spot totally out of sight.

3. Putting off tackling stains

We're all guilty of it, but if you spill a drink on your couch or notice a pet stain, it's important to deal with it there and then – it's one of the golden rules of stain removal.

'I've seen firsthand how a clean sofa can transform a living space, especially when staging homes for We Buy Houses in Metro Detroit,' says Harpreet Saini. 'Once, we almost lost a buyer because of a stubborn pet stain on a sofa that wasn't cleaned promptly.

'I always recommend to tackle stains immediately using products like the Bissell Pet Stain Eraser (available at Walmart) or a good microfiber cloth from Amazon,' such as the HOMEXCEL Microfiber Cleaning Cloths.

'Whenever there are pet stains in a fabric, they should be cleaned as soon as possible using an enzymatic cleaner,' warns Anderson.

4. Using too much water

'Another mistake people make is using too much water when cleaning,' says Anderson. 'Although it might appear reasonable to drench the fabric and get rid of the stains, doing so can create dampness in the furniture and encourage the growth of mold and mildew, especially in upholstered furniture.'

Instead, do not drench the fabric when cleaning a velvet, cotton or leather couch. Press a damp cloth onto the stained area and treat the stain like that, advises Anderson. Dabbing, rather than rubbing is preferred to avoid pushing a wet stain or cleaning solutions into the fabric, or spongey layers below.

'If you are looking for something deeper, try a suction steam cleaner, such as the Bissell SpotClean ProHeat Portable Spot Cleaner (available at Amazon) which uses less water and removes stains very well.'

5. Scrubbing too hard

Is there a more hardworking or vital space in the home than an area with running water? We use it to wash our hands, rinse fruit and veg, do our dishes and tackle any number of cleaning tasks. But high-traffic areas such as sinks will see grime build up, especially around taps, drains and any hardware.

Professional cleaner for more than a decade and operations manager at leading cleaning company Speckless, Karina Toner explains, ‘Sinks accumulate grime from daily use, including soap residue, toothpaste, food particles, and hard water deposits. She recommends cleaning your sink regularly with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.

To clean your fridge, remove all items and wipe down shelves and drawers with a mixture of warm water and dish soap.’

I have an obnoxiously strong sense of smell so the fridge is one area I stay on top of militantly. To make it less arduous, I clean a shelf at a time, usually when the produce in that space has run out, paying close attention to dairy drips.

I also ring-fence 15 minutes before my weekly grocery shop or delivery to bin any old produce, remove loose debris and wipe down the glass shelves with an antibacterial spray (such as Method's Citrus all-purpose spray as the smell is lovely) or a soapy sponge. I repeat this on the interior door surface in the space between door shelves as drips can occur without you noticing.

3. Crusty cutlery drawers

Karina says, ‘Dust, crumbs, and small debris can accumulate in cutlery drawers over time, especially if the drawer is frequently opened and closed. The buildup is often overlooked during regular cleaning. ‘

‘To combat it, empty the drawer and vacuum out loose debris. Wipe down the inside with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly before replacing the cutlery. Consider using a drawer liner to make future cleaning easier.’

My two cats always rub themselves along doors and furniture edges and there are spots where the corners show signs of grime. I clean mine down when I dust surfaces nearby.

To clean yours, Karina says, ‘Wipe down doors with a damp cloth and mild soap, paying extra attention to handles and edges. For wooden doors, use a wood cleaner to maintain the finish.’

5. Dusty baseboards

Karina Toner, professional cleaner and operations manager at Spekless cleaning says baseboards are always on her radar.

She explains, 'Baseboards are often overlooked during regular cleaning because they are low to the ground and not in direct line of sight. Dust and dirt settle on them over time, especially in homes with pets or heavy foot traffic.'

I used amber glass spray bottles like these from Amazon so all my home-made cleaning solutions look uniform when stored, either on open shelving or in my cabinets. They come with labels so you can be clear on what's inside long after you've made them.

7. Soap scum in the Shower

The irony of a space designed to keep us clean getting dirty isn't lost on us. But soap scum commonly forms in a shower when the cleansing products we use combine with hard water minerals, creating a residue that adheres to shower surfaces.

Karina says, 'This is more common in areas with hard water and can be exacerbated by infrequent cleaning. When looking at how to clean a shower, use a commercial soap scum remover such as Bio Clean Professional available at Amazon, or a homemade mixture of vinegar and baking soda.'

How to clean an upholstered headboard

Plus, thanks to its 'AnyBag Technology' you can line the inside of the dustbin with a plastic bag, making it quick and easy to empty when you’re done cleaning. 

I put it to the test in my home for a few weeks. I used it for a variety of cleaning tasks, including removing spiderwebs from my basement, vacuuming the floors of our messy truck, and sucking up a kitchen spill. After all that testing, here’s why I think the Shark Messmaster is a great option for busy households.

Unboxing and setting up

The Messmaster arrived in a medium-sized box, and there was a quick-start guide printed right on the inner flap. (I’m not one to read instruction manuals, so I love when brands do this.) Upon opening the box, I was greeted by a mass of plastic – every single piece was wrapped in its protective bag, and there were a lot of pieces. In addition to the main vacuum body, the box contained the 3-foot hose, three attachments, a three-piece extension wand, the attachment storage clip, and three plastic bags that you can use inside the dustbin.

With the help of the quick-start guide, I was able to put the vacuum together in just a few minutes. There’s onboard storage for two of the attachments, and you can simply leave the third attached to the hose. The power cord, which is 15 feet long, wraps around the upper handle, making it quite convenient and compact to store. The only pieces that don’t have designated storage are the extension wand sections. 

There’s a latch on the front of the vacuum that lets you swing open the lid, and inside, there are instructions on how to outfit the dustbin with a bag. It’s easy to do, and I love that you can use any size plastic bag – you don’t have to buy special ones from the brand. The dustbin also pulls out of the base so you can pour out any liquid into the sink after cleaning. 

Who would it suit?

If you want a wet/dry vacuum but don’t have the space for a full-size shop vac, the Shark Messmaster is a good alternative. Thanks to its three attachments, it can be used to clean up virtually any type of mess, from a tipped-over houseplant to a bowl of soup that hit the floor, and I found it to be particularly handy for cleaning the car. It’s versatile but still quite compact, and you can outfit it with any plastic bag to capture and easily dispose of the debris you suck up.

However, if you’re looking for a vacuum to clean up pet hair, this probably isn’t the best choice, as none of its attachments are very effective on fur that’s embedded in upholstery or rugs.

Test 1: Dry cleaning

My old farmhouse has an unfinished basement, and I frequently use our full-size shop vac to clean up dirt and spiderwebs down there. I decided to use the Messmaster for my monthly cleaning session, and I was impressed by its powerful suction. The power button is a little hard to press – you have to make sure it goes down all the way – but once it’s on, the vacuum can easily pick up large and small pieces of debris, as well as those yucky spiderwebs. Plus, the extension wand let me reach up along the edges of the ceiling without having to climb on a chair. While cleaning in the basement, I carried the vacuum along as I went. However, it was a bit heavy after a while, as it weighs around 10 pounds.  

Test 2: Cleaning wet messes

There weren’t many wet messes that needed cleaning while I was testing the Messmaster, so I manufactured one to see how it would perform. I spilled some cereal and milk on our hardwood floors, then used the wet/dry vacuum to tackle the mess. 

With the squeegee tool attached, I did have to hold it at a slight angle to pick up the pieces of cereal, which meant it didn’t do a great job on the milk. However, once the cereal was picked up, I was able to hold the squeegee flush against the floor, and wow! It did an incredible job sucking up all the moisture, even from the cracks between the floorboards. I expected I would need to mop to pick up lingering moisture, but it wasn’t necessary at all. I just sprayed a little cleaning solution over the area, wiped it down, and that was it. It was super quick and easy, and I was impressed with the vacuum’s powerful suction. 

Test 3: Cleaning a car

I also used the Messmaster to clean out my partner’s truck, and this is where the vacuum shined. Its nozzle tool is perfect for getting into all the cracks and crevices around the car, and it’s easy to either hold the vacuum as you clean it or rest it on one of the seats. The 3-foot hose was long enough to get into all the hard-to-reach areas, and the carpet/upholstery tool lifted dirt and debris off the carpeting and seats. I also loved that I was able to capture all the dirt, pebbles, and trash in a plastic bag inside the vacuum—when I was finished cleaning, I just tied it off and threw it all away. 

The only time the vacuum struggled was when it came time to clean up pet hair. Because our dogs ride in the back seat of the car, there’s quite a bit of fur that gets worked into the upholstery. Unfortunately, the vacuum isn’t effective at pulling out this fur, so I had to pull out my favorite handheld vacuum, the Black + Decker Furbuster, available at Amazon, to get this area clean.  

Cleaning and maintenance

One of my favorite things about this wet/dry vac is that it’s a breeze to clean, no matter what type of mess you’re using it on. If you’re sucking up dry debris, you can simply put a plastic bag inside the canister—it can be any brand and size between 2 and 13 gallons. The bag will collect all the dirt and dust, and when you’re done, you can just pull it out and toss the whole thing in the trash. 

This isn’t as feasible if you’re sucking up a lot of water or a messy spill, but the vacuum is still simple to clean when you use it on liquid. After you empty the canister, all you have to do is reassemble the vacuum and use it to suck up a few cups of clean water. The brand says it only requires 1 cup of water, but I got the best results using 4 or 5 cups. It effectively rinses out the attachment, hose, and inner dustbin, leaving the vacuum clean and ready for next time. The dustbin can even go in the dishwasher for a hands-off deep clean. 

How does it rate online?

The Shark Messmaster Portable Wet/Dry Vacuum is fairly new, so it doesn’t have a lot of online reviews yet. It has a 4.6-star rating from over 200 reviewers on Amazon, and 4.7 stars from over 250 reviewers on Best Buy. Many people comment that it’s easy to carry around and has powerful suction, and a lot of reviewers note that it’s perfect for cleaning out cars. Among negative reviews, one of the most common complaints is that the vacuum isn’t good at picking up pet hair, which aligns with my own experience testing the vacuum.  

How does it compare?

If you’re looking for a compact vacuum that can tackle pet hair, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser is one of the best handheld vacuums we’ve tested. It’s a little cheaper than the Messmaster, retailing for around $80, and it comes with a special pet tool that lifts hair out of carpeting and upholstery, making it a better choice to clean pet hair out of your car. 

On the other hand, the Stanley SL18116P Wet/Dry Vacuum, available from Amazon might be a better choice if you’re looking for a more classic shop vac. It costs roughly the same as the Messmaster, but it has a large 6-gallon capacity and is mounted on wheels, making it easy to move around. However, it takes up significantly more space in storage and likely isn’t practical for those in small homes or apartments.  

Should you buy the Shark Messmaster Portable Wet/Dry Vacuum?

If you’re looking for a portable wet/dry vacuum, the Shark Messmaster is a worthwhile buy. It retails for around $100, and it’s a powerful and versatile cleaning tool that can be used all around your home. It had no problem sucking up spider webs, debris under car seats, and even spilled milk, and unlike full-size shop vac, this model is quick and easy to clean. Plus, it’s compact enough to tuck in a closet when it’s not in use, so it’s ideal for anyone who has limited storage space in their home.  

How we test wet/dry vacuums

We test all our wet/dry vacuums on a range of different debris on different surfaces. Where applicable, we test them on carpets, rugs, and different types of hard floors like wood, vinyl, and linoleum. We test them on several types of common stains and spills, and we also test them throughout every room of an entire home, as well as in cars.

The real estate expert begins with (arguably) the most powerful tool of all – a vacuum cleaner – specifically the Bissell CrossWave Hydrosteam, which she uses to up after her French bulldog, Cash. 

In an Amazon livestream, Christina suggested it is one of the best vacuums for pet hair, noting that she often uses hers before guests visit her home over the holiday season. 

'I have pets, so as a pet owner, this is very important to me,' Christina says.' We have a Bissell, and we've had it for many years, and it's amazing. All the products are great. Cleaning my home before all my guests arrive is a must.'

As mentioned, Christina isn't the only figure who rates this vacuum so highly. Our product tester Aleenah Ansari rated it 5/5 stars – noting that the appliance offers 'wet and dry perfection.' But what sets this vacuum aside? 

During her test, Aleenah noted that the Bissell CrossWave is able to clean up stains and messes more deeply than a vacuum alone since it steams and mops at once. This means it is great for both hardwood floors and carpets – the latter of which is notorious for pet hair.

With two endorsements and the product in question on sale, what are you waiting for?

Rugs can transform any room, whether they are used to create zones within an open plan space, add pattern and visual interest or even act as a starting point for a new color scheme. 

But if they get dirty, they can quickly look shabby and stand out for all the wrong reasons. This is why it's important to clean an area rug fairly regularly. But other than mopping up the occasional spill, how often should you clean your area rugs – and what are the downsides of not doing so? 

To answer the regularity question: it depends on how much wear your various rugs see. This should give you some indication to how much dirt is actually making its way into your rugs' fibers. You will also need to consider the type of rugs you have, since, as with deep cleaning your carpet, the durability of their materials will have an impact on how often they need to be cleaned. Then, of course, their colors and patterns (or lack of) will affect how quickly they look dirty.

As for the downsides of not cleaning your area rugs often enough, they are fairly obvious: they can quickly be damaged by ground-in dirt which will become harder and harder to remove as time goes on; if wet stains are left to fester, they can develop mold, which is a health hazard and will make your rugs smell musty (if your house smells musty, rugs are often the cause). And, obviously, dirty rugs will ruin the aesthetics of your rooms. 

How often should you deep clean an area rug?

'I don't want to say "it depends," because that's not the most helpful answer, but it really does depend, which is why we go into more detail below. A thick rug in a family home with lots of little people in it is going to need far more thorough cleaning than a low pile rug in a single person's small apartment,' advises Millie Hurst, Solved Section Editor at Homes & Gardens.

Millie continues, 'Personally, I have a circular jute rug, from La Redoute, which I love (soft curved or organic shapes instantly make a place feel more homely, balancing out harsh angles and edges). I also have a higher pile Berber rug from Wayfair. About a year ago, I deep-cleaned the Berber rug and was shocked at how dirty it was. I used a Scotchgard rug and carpet cleaner (at Amazon) and rinsed and repeated several times with hot water until the water ran clear. 

'So, in conclusion, clean your rugs more often than you think you need to. Ruggable's rugs are washable, making the whole rug-cleaning process much easier, especially if you have pets.' 

What affects how often you need to clean an area rug?

If you have a busy household and kids or pets regularly traipsing dirt across your area rugs, you will need to vacuum them once to twice a week, lift and shake them once a week, and deep clean them once a month. 

If you are a no-shoes-indoors household, you can look to reduce cleaning most rugs to once a week. 

Regardless, you should be vacuuming your rugs on a weekly basis to pick up dust and debris. And always having to hand a rug cleaning product – we like Resolve Carpet Cleaner Spray, at Walmart, and the products just below, for removing spills, spots and stains in particular – will mean that a deep clean isn't needed as regularly. 

As we said above, the location of an area rug affects the amount and type of foot traffic it sees, which in turn will make a big difference to the regularity with which you need to clean it. More on this, below.

How often to clean rugs, room-by-room

Entryway rugs are likely to need vacuuming at least twice a week, and if you allow guests into your home wearing shoes and it's fall/winter or you live near a beach, for example, you will probably need to lift the rug once a week, shake out debris, and vacuum beneath once a week. A deep clean once a month will be needed.

Living room rugs, especially those in an open-plan kitchen/diner are going to need to be cleaned with similar regularity. A deep clean once a month will be needed.

Dining room rugs and kitchen rugs will likely need the same routine, but a deep clean the most regularly, perhaps every couple of weeks, depending on how resilient their materials are to repelling spills, and how good their colors and patterns are at disguising stains. A deep clean once a month will be needed.

Bedroom rugs are likely to need the least cleaning. They will need a weekly vacuum, and can always benefit from being shaken out at the same time to remove dust. Deep clean? Once a year should do, spills aside.

Bathroom rugs are a different story entirely. There are a few factors that mean bathroom rugs may need to be washed (if washable) as often as every two to three weeks. If bathroom rugs are near a toilet or it is used as a bath or shower mat and is often wet, then it can be at risk of developing bacteria, mildew or mold if not regularly cleaned. Even if this is not the case for your bathroom rug, they will likely need to be shaken out quite often due to all the hair, dust and debris that bathroom activity comes with, and deep cleaned four times a year. 

Even the best outdoor rugs will need cleaning. Most are made-for-purpose, so cleaning an outdoor rug shouldn't mean more than sweeping, perhaps vacuuming and hosing. 

How often to clean, by rug type

If your wondering whether the material your area rugs is made of makes a difference to how often you clean your rug, the answer is yes. Differing materials, volume and textures of area rugs will all determine how much care they need, and they should impact how you choose a rug for various rooms. 

'Wool rugs are surprisingly easy to keep clean, and because it actually repels stains, you shouldn't need to clean a wool rug more than once a week, with a vacuum,' says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief, Homes & Gardens. 'Choose a vacuum with a beater bar because wool rugs are notorious for shedding. Spills can be dealt with by blotting, baking soda and a mild mix of dish soap and warm water, though never over-wet a wool rug.'

Cotton rugs are another easy-to-clean buy that, if small enough, can go in your washer any time they need to. Be aware, though, that over time, this will mean their colors fade somewhat, and that cotton rugs should be dried flat. 

Jute rugs, like seagrass rugs, shouldn't need cleaning too often since, like wool, these natural materials are quite tough. Like wool, though, they don't like getting over-wet, so ensure cleaning jute rugs is limited to vacuuming, blotting, and, as recommended by Ali Hafezi Mashhadi, vice president and rug specialist at Babash Rug Services. ‘a dry cleaning compound, such as Capture all-in-one solution.'

Nylon and polypropylene rugs are super durable, repel stains, and are easy to clean. Both should need no more than a weekly vacuum and spot cleaning of spills. Again, nylon can fade a little over time.

A dirty rug can ruin a room's aesthetic; regularly vacuuming, and taking immediate action with spills will reduce the frequency with which you need to deep clean or steam clean you rug. Whilst some rugs can go in the washer, most can't, as per their care labels.

Cleaning a microfiber couch

Before you start, make sure you've given yourself enough time to clean your best couch so you don't end up rushing or using the wrong products and ending up with a new stain. The chances are you'll be rewarded with some spare change hiding beneath the sofa cushions.

It's also worth checking the care code on your sofa's label: Will Cotter, from cleaning service Happy Cleans, explains that there are four codes.

• Code W: use water-based cleaners, at Walmart, and only vacuum or brush the cloth after it has dried. 
• Code S: use gentle solvents or water-free dry cleaning products to get rid of stains.
• Code WS: use upholstery shampoo, at Walmart, light solvents, or water-based cleaners to clean your furniture.
• Code X: do not use chemicals, instead lightly vacuum or brush the cloth or have it cleaned by a professional.
  

General clean

Experts advise to always vacuum first. Karina Toner, a cleaning professional from Spekless says that before doing any cleaning, you should give your couch a good once-over with your vacuum cleaner. This will help remove any loose dirt, debris, and pet hair that can get trapped in the fibers. A small, handheld vacuum cleaner will make this easier. 

Next, use a gentle cleaning solution. We would always recommend using an eco-friendly cleaning solution where possible.

'Avoid using anything with harsh chemicals or bleach, as it can damage the fabric,' agrees Karina. 'Instead, mix a few drops of dish soap or a mild detergent with warm water,' 

As always, when trying any cleaning tips for the first time, test in an inconspicuous area before applying the cleaning solution to the entire couch to make sure it won't damage the fabric or leave water spots. Work in sections and replace your cloth regularly to avoid spreading dirt around or going back over areas you have already cleaned.

'Blot, don't rub. When applying the cleaning solution, be sure to blot the fabric with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as it can damage the fibers and leave water spots,' continues Karina.

'Dry thoroughly. Once you've finished cleaning, be sure to let the couch air dry completely before using it again. You can speed up the drying process by using a fan or opening a window.'

Will Cotter recommends using a ShamWow towel, available on Amazon, to help it dry quicker. Top tip: if your sofa is newly purchased, apply some fabric-protecting finish to prevent stains.

For wet stains

Blot stains dry immediately and use a white vinegar and water solution. Baby wipes, at Walmart, can also help to remove wet stains.

'For coffee stains, use detergent and warm water,' advises Will Cotter. 'On the other hand, baking soda works for greasy ones, and sparkling water will remove wine spills.'

For dry stains

For dried-on stains, Penny Nicholas of Sparkling Penny recommends shaking up a bottle of soap and water and spooning on just the suds. Then work those into the stains – that way you don't use too much water.

Deep cleaning

If your microfiber couch needs a more thorough clean, Karina Toner says you can also use a steam cleaner. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions whenever steam cleaning a couch, use the appropriate attachment for your couch, and test in an inconspicuous area first.

Will Cotter also suggests deep cleaning a microfiber couch by wetting it with rubbing alcohol, at Walmart, and scrubbing any stains with a brush. 'Repeat if necessary, and vacuum with a water extractor portable machine to dry. The water will be completely suctioned and the alcohol will evaporate without a mark. Finish cleaning it by wiping the couch with an absorbent cloth,' he says.

Steam cleaning is a great way to freshen up furniture without the need for harsh chemicals or spending effort on pulling all the covers off, and then trying to get them back on again.

When cleaning a couch, there is a range of approaches you can take depending on the fabric, its size, how often it is used, and by who (pets, we are looking at you). But there is often no more straightforward method than using a great steam cleaner. 

Here, professional cleaners have explained how to steam clean a couch correctly for a deep clean, and why it is so beneficial. 

How to steam clean a couch 

Before steam cleaning a couch, it is best to check that your furniture can withstand the high temperatures and moisture. Most couches can be steamed, however, expensive pieces or bespoke furniture may require more delicate care. 

You can check the care label first to decipher if yours is set for steaming. Tim Jankowski, professional carpet and upholstery cleaner and president at Aladdin’s Cleaning & Restoration suggests that some labels may be marked with a ‘W’ meaning clean with water, an ‘X’, signifying no cleaning other than a brush or vacuum, or an ‘S’ suggesting you can clean with a solvent but not water or steam. 

‘Alternatively, check the materials,’ he suggests. ‘Cotton and polyester are among those that are safe to steam clean while steam can damage materials like leather, silk, and suede, as well as some blended fabrics.’

Before steaming your whole couch, consider trying the steamer on a small inconspicuous area of the furniture first to check for any adverse effects. 

1. Vacuum away hair and crumbs

Vacuuming furniture offers a great surface clean for upholstery, and should be the first step before undertaking any other cleaning method, says Karina Toner, cleaning expert at Spekless Cleaning. Always check you are using the correct upholstery attachment on your vacuum and use a beater brush to help pull dirt away from the surface and the filling below.

To streamline the process and make it more efficient you can also use a pet hair remover before steam cleaning your couch, Karina adds. This extra step will ‘prevent any fur from getting trapped in the machine and allow the steam cleaner to penetrate deep into the fabric of the couch,’ she says. ‘This can improve the effectiveness of the cleaning process.’

2. Use a dedicated steam cleaner for upholstery

There are several things you can clean with a steam cleaner with many models coming with several attachments for effective and safe cleaning without the need for multiple machines. Nevertheless, using a dedicated fabric or upholstery steamer is best when dealing with a piece of furniture as delicate and as important as our sofas,’ says upholstery cleaning expert Tim Jankowski. 

‘Selecting the right steam cleaner will ensure that you treat your sofa with the right temperature water vapor to effectively clean your upholstery,’ he explains. 

If you do use a steam mop or other steamer with alternative attachments, then it is important to select the right attachments, adds cleaning expert Ahmad Jamal of Cleaners Advisor. ‘Using a fabric or upholstery brush, and the lowest steam setting will prevent damage,’ he says. 

3. Pretreat stains before steaming

As with cleaning any fabric, pretreating stains will always lead to the best results. The fabric on your furniture is not the same as your clothing, however, and some normal stain cleaning methods you should never use on a fabric couch. 

Given that steamers only use water, pretreating can help to avoid you having to go over the same spot multiple times and waterlogging the couch, points out upholstery cleaning expert Tim Jankowski.

4. Work in a pattern to ensure you cover every inch

One of the most efficient cleaning tips experts repeat is to always work in a pattern to save time and ensure every inch is covered. 

Cleaning expert Ahmad Jamal suggests that working in small sections, from top to bottom, and using overlapping strokes will ensure that you don't miss any sports and don't work over the same spot several times leading to water logging.

5. Allow it to air dry with windows and doors open

After cleaning upholstery with a steam cleaner, allowing it to dry is the most time-consuming step. To do this, it is best to leave the couch in a well-ventilated space with your windows and doors open on a warm day, suggests Karina Toner, a cleaning expert. ‘This step is critical to prevent mold growth,’ she warns. 

If you have a carpet cleaner, then you may be able to use the water suction function to help pull any excess water out of the couch carefully if you need it to dry more quickly, or are concerned you may have waterlogged the interior filling. You should test this method on a small, hidden area first to check that the attachment or suction doesn't damage the fabric.

Steam cleaning has become increasingly popular over the last few years as many of us look for alternative cleaning methods to harsh chemicals. A simple handheld system such as a steam cleaner offers a brilliant way to dislodge stains, deodorize fabrics, and dissolve dirt, points out cleaning expert Ahmad Jamal.

The water tank had a small opening so I had some minor spills, so it may help to use a funnel and pour slowly.

There are 3 different modes that show up on the foot display: area rug mode, SteamWash Mode, and Hard Floor Mode, and the Mode button on the handle toggles between them. Admittedly, the icon for each mode wasn’t intuitive at first, so I relied on the user manual until I memorized each one. It’s also worth noting that the mode and clean-out cycle buttons looked similar to the untrained eye, so I recommend reading through the user guide before your first use.

The CrossWave Hydrosteam is relatively light and has an integrated carrying handle and tray, making it easy to move around and store when you’re done. It also has a headlight that’s helpful for dark corners and bathrooms.

Is the Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam good on carpet?

Once I turned on the SteamWash mode, I followed the instructions to wait 30 seconds for the CrossWave Hydrosteam to warm up, which is denoted by the steam ready light on the foot of the vacuum, and hold the solution spray trigger under the handle for 10 seconds to wet the brush roll. Then, I just had to recline to get the brush roll spinning. This trigger dispenses the formula and steam in SteamWash mode, which I kept it on while going across my carpet. To dry the floor after, I let go of the solution trigger and went over the same areas.

I didn’t realize how much of the difference the CrossWave Hydrosteam made until I saw the dirty water tank after use, which was full of hair, dust, and dirt that my vacuum hadn’t picked up right before. I was conscious of the cord length since I was worried that the vacuum would unplug during my cleaning session, though it stayed in the entire time. I did have to move the cord out of my way as I went back over areas to suck up excess water, which is to be expected.

Is the Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam good on hard floors?

The CrossWave Hydrosteam needs a mix of water and Bissell's hard floor sanitize solution, which is designed to clean and sanitize non-porous surfaces. When setting it up, I used the trigger to dispense the solution for 10 seconds to wet the brush roll, and then kept my finger on the trigger while going over my floors. I let them dry for 5 minutes and then released the trigger so I could go over the same areas and pick up excess water.

I appreciated the headlight for cleaning dark corners, and the cleaning solution didn’t leave any streaks. There was some stickier debris on my floors that didn’t budge with the CrossWave Hydrosteam, though I wasn’t necessarily surprised by that.

Cleaning the Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam

The water tank was easy to remove with the click of a button while holding the handle on the water tank. From there, all that’s left is to disassemble the filter and strainer stem, rinse them off, and lay them out to dry for 24 hours. I did struggle the first time to put the tank back together the first time, but I got used to it afterward since the components click together fairly easily.

After the floors are clean, it’s time to clean the vacuum by emptying, rinsing, and wiping down the clean tank that stores cleaning solution as well as the dirty water and debris tank, which has a pet and human hair strainer to separate larger debris from dirty water. I really appreciated the pet hair strainer because I could throw out all the solid debris and rinse the rest off. I also took out the brush roll to dry, though I often had to rip long hair that wrapped around it during the cleaning process.

After each use, it’s recommended to run a Clean-Out Cycle, which uses the FreshStart cleaning solution in the water tank, and remove the brush roll to dry. Full disclosure - this is pretty tedious, since you’re repeating many of the same steps that you've already performed to clean your floor, but it also helps protect the longevity of the CrossWave Hydrosteam. From there, you just need to open the removable brush window and leave the brush roll to dry.

How does the CrossWave Hydrosteam rate online?

The CrossWave HydroSteam is relatively new to the market but is receiving primarily 4 and 5-star reviews on Amazon on Bissell’s site for its ability to steam and mop at the same time, and it’s a clear favorite among pet owners. The main critique was that some customers with large homes had to refill the water tank multiple times, which can be a hassle. However, most customers overwhelming preferred the CrossWave to mopping and appreciated the all-in-one design.

How does the CrossWave Hydrosteam compare to other vacuums?

If a cordless steam cleaner is higher on your list, the Bissell CrossWave Cordless Max may be a better fit, which has a 30-minute runtime and keeps the features you may love in the CrossWave Hydrosteam, like self-cleaning features and design that helps you reach every corner. What is the Bissell ICONpet like to use? 

 Simple set-up
I consider myself handy, but I’m confident my six-year-old son could have assembled the Bissell ICONpet vacuum. With minimal moving parts and super clear instructions, it took less than twenty minutes to put together. Bissell recommends charging the unit for four hours before using, and despite being impatient, I listened. Once the vacuum was ready to roll, I tested it on several surfaces. 

Portability
If you have stairs, you know what a pain (literally) it can be lugging a vacuum up and down. At the touch of a button, the Bissell ICONpet transforms into a handheld vacuum. Weighing in under three pounds (yes I weighed it), I can vacuum my stairs in five minutes compared to fifteen. Added bonus? I don’t feel it in my back the next morning.

Here at my house, what I’ll find in furniture is a guessing game. Most of the time it’s leftover breakfast and dog hair, both of which the Bissell sweeps right up!  If you have pets or children, the handheld option will save your sanity. 

Best ways to use the Bissell ICONpet

I like to think that the Bissell is great for a seemingly limitless number of situations. With that being said, this vacuum is seriously convenient for more than just floors. Pet bed too large for the washer? Pull out the Bissell. Leftover popcorn from movie night found its way into the couch? Go grab the Bissell.

Picture this: you just get done cleaning, and put your vacuum away. Moments later, you notice left-behind crumbs, and want to scream. We’ve all been there, and it’s maddening. With the built-in LED lighting, you can kiss those missed spots goodbye. When I tell you the lights are bright, trust me. They light up a path that shows no mercy to pet hair or even, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, dust. Did I mention the crevice tool also includes a nifty LED light? Perfect for cleaning couches 

Power modes
There are three power modes, thoughtfully designed for different surfaces. Max cleaning, everyday cleaning, and quiet cleaning. Carpet requires a stronger suction than hardwood- so max cleaning is the best option for soft surfaces. Everyday cleaning is the best option for hardwood and area rugs, as well as car interior and furniture. Quiet mode is surprisingly quiet, and I’d recommend using only on hardwood. The suction is minimal, but it does boast the longest run time! 

Charging station
The small, easily hidden charging station attaches easily to any wall, and even holds the included accessories. 

Tangle-free brush
Pet hair is one thing, but long (human) hair is a whole new ballgame. Bissell’s patented Tangle-Free Brush Roll is amazing and prevents hair from wrapping around the brush. Pro tip- when hair gets stuck around a vacuum brush, the vacuum loses suction power and struggles to clean effectively. If you’ve ever had the dreaded task of cleaning hair from a vacuum, you’ll appreciate this feature. 

Washable filter
I won’t name names, but some vacuums require an engineering degree to remove the bin and filter. I’ll let you in on a little secret: Bissell’s foam filter can be washed with soap and water and dries in less than an hour. Best part? It’s easy to take out, and just as easy to put back in. 

Bissell ICONpet Cordless Vacuum: Final thoughts

I’m not sure anyone wakes up in the morning thinking, “I can’t wait to vacuum,” but this cordless vac makes it a much less painful chore. 

If you’re sick of lingering pet hair, the Bissell ICONpet cordless vacuum was built for you. It’s simple, practical, and it does what the box says. So easy to use, my children may begin moonlighting as housekeepers. 

Pet hair is sneaky, but the Bissell’s LED lights show no mercy. Pet dander lingers, but it’s nothing the Motorized TurboBrush can’t handle. Behind my fridge? I’ll spare you the details, but it was ugly. Dust for days, and it was swept away in two passes. 

I also love that Bissell uses their SmartSeal Allergen System, which does a great job keeping dust inside the vacuum. For allergy sufferers, this is a noteworthy quality of the ICONpet. 

Also affordable compared to many competitors, the Bissell ICONpet Cordless Vacuum is a winner in our book.

There are only a few things I didn’t swoon over, and they’re not dealbreakers. The design is not particularly ergonomic and is top-heavy. It’s not too noticeable for quick clean-ups, but if you plan on tackling the whole house, your arm may need a break (or perhaps I should join a gym). Learn from my mistake and don’t rely on a wall to hold your vacuum up. It will fall right over, as the Bissell ICONpet is not a free-standing vacuum.

When I was asked to review the Bissell Multireach Active 21V cordless vacuum, I was intrigued. We’ve already tested some of Shark's cordless vacuums and loved them – but at a lower price than its some of its competitor's vacs, the Bissell seemed like a cost-efficient alternative that shouldn’t be overlooked. 

I’ll come clean (no pun intended): I am a big fan of the best cordless vacuums on the market. So much more convenient than hauling a full-size vacuum cleaner out, they are perfect for quick clean ups – but also for a whole house vacuum, assuming their batteries are up to the task. 

The downside? I do find that most cordless vacuum cleaners – even the great ones – are best on their maximum power setting if they are to compete with full size vacs, and that, of course, challenges their batteries to last much longer than 15 to 20 minutes.

Bissell Multireach Active 21V cordless vacuum review

Size

The Bissell® Multireach Active 21V cordless vacuum is lightweight at 3.6kg – this is a big plus with cordless vacuum cleaners because they aren’t usually designed to stand up on their own, while you move furniture about, for example, unlike most full-size vacuum cleaners. So, if you're picking it up, leaning it, putting it down... you want it to be light.

It’s also comparable in size to its cordless competitors – measuring 119cm tall by 27cm wide and 24cm deep – so easily stored in a tall but slim kitchen cabinet or utility space. And, yes, there is a wall-mounted dock for neat storage and charging. 

Battery

The Bissell® Multireach Active 21V has a decent, 21-volt Li-ion battery, which will run for up to 30 minutes before needing recharging – which typically takes 5 hours. 

A warning to newbies to cordless vacuum cleaners: this one, like others, doesn’t fade in power as the battery runs down; instead, it will simply stop when the battery is run down – note: there is no warning light. 

The battery is recharged on the body of the vac – and there is no option to buy an extra so that you always have a fully charged battery ready to go. That does mean that you will want to ensure your battery is fully charged – or at least half-charged – if you are planning to whizz round the whole house. 

Performance

It goes without saying that this vacuum can deal efficiently with both carpets and hard floors – and because it’s a cordless, furniture and cars, too. But what about the extras?

There are two power settings – the lower setting is what will give you the run time of 30 minutes of battery life; the higher setting is what I prefer to use to match a full-size vac more comparably – but will cut battery life down to around 15 minutes. For me, this is the setting you need to use to match the performance of a plug-in vac. If it's quick spills you're looking to pick up, the lower setting is fine; if you want thoroughness, you'll need full power.

The low profile, swivel floor nozzle has a brush roll that is sold as ‘tangle-free’, with an ‘Advanced Hair Management System’. What that translates to is a motorized brush roll that doesn’t get stuck as the brush roll/comb separates and removes hair, sucking it up into the dust cup – this stops your cleaning rhythm being spoilt by constantly having to unclog the vacuum. That said, we still found that the vacuum had to be occasionally unclogged as the anti-hair wrap technology is not 100% effective.

There are LED lights on the floor nozzle, which are really bright. This is an added extra I really love – it makes vacuuming under furniture so much easier simply because you can see where to aim, and where you've been. 

This vacuum converts easily to a handheld, with a touch of a button. There’s a built in crevice tool, so there’s no need for an attachment for those hard-to-reach spaces. A dusting brush is also provided. 

Emptying

As you might hope, the Bissell is easy to empty and clean – the Easy Empty™ and Clean Slide Technology features a no-touch dirt chamber with a unique sliding mechanism which collects and then traps dust, debris, allergens and hair. 

What didn’t I like?

As I said at the top, we have tried various other cordless to handheld vacuum cleaners. What this vacuum lacks that the Shark Vertex Cordless Stick Vacuum in particular does have is the duster crevice tool features with a flippable brush which means you can reach beneath furniture without bending forwards. 

This isn’t a big thing, but it did cross my mind as I prostrated myself on the floor of the living room to reach under the sofa with the Bissell – the Shark simply folds in the middle to allow for the user to do nothing more than bend forward to reach beneath furniture.

However – and this is the major difference between them – the price of the Bissell is what makes up for this lack of feature. It is cheaper.
