Mixing patterns can be seen as controversial, but when done right, this risky design technique adds maximalist flair to any sized space. Blake and Ryan have opted for a dark floral couch, an ornate rug and upholstered arm chairs that juxtapose their lighter-colored furnishings. And who better to showcase them than Hugh Jackman?

Hugh visited his Deadpool counterpart for what appears to be a Wrexham viewing party (because, of course), and in doing so, he offered us a look at Blake and Ryan's textured living room. We're no stranger to seeing this space on Blake's Instagram (fans will recognize the same space from her Serena van der Woodsen-approved party pics), but Hugh's shot offers a more detailed look at how they use pattern in their space.

'Natural stone acts as a ‘character builder’ for your home,' he says. ‘The natural imperfections and inconsistencies in each fireplace will bring an intrinsic uniqueness to your home.’ 

Owen recommends sticking to the period of the house when purchasing a fireplace, so that the styles look cohesive and it looks more natural.

‘In the Georgian period, they made tens of thousands of bullseye style fireplaces, so this style is very typical in properties of that time,' he explains. 'Similarly to Victorian, the most common design is Carrara marble with a shell design on the corbels. Edwardian fireplaces are beautifully intricate, mainly tiled and made from either cast iron or slate, with an Art Noveau feel to them as well,' he notes.

If unsure about the period of the house, Owen recommends befriending a neighbor and asking to see if they have any original features on display.

'Otherwise, you can gain a pretty good idea of the period of the house from the street view.’

'A recurring theme throughout our client projects is curated illumination. Decorative lighting is moving beyond the realm of simple illumination and becoming a method of artistic expression – a way to animate or embellish a scheme,' Michael discusses. 

'Lighting is being used as a work of art through oversized, sculptural installations that bring a sense of movement to a space or create an optical illusion.'

If we want a similar aesthetic without going all-out metallic, we should opt for a dark hue (with a similar richness) and pair it with metallic accents for a subtler twist on the trend. 

'Utilize this range of dark and dramatic hues as contrast with colored light or gilded metallic accents. While the deeply saturated dark tones will invite mystery and intrigue, they also create a restful retreat,' Sue says.

With these benefits aside, Geoff McKinnen, a certified sleep coach at Amerisleep, adds that this hue may also be beneficial if we're looking to sleep better. 

'Softer shades of yellow create a tranquil environment because the muted tone imitates sunshine,' he notes. 'The color alleviates stress and promotes tranquillity, so you can sleep peacefully.'

'Also, spaces abundant in natural light can accommodate darker hues better than those lacking natural light. If your living area lacks abundant natural light, opt for a lighter variant of a dark color.'

As mentioned, Blake and Ryan's home features a contemporary rustic aesthetic, meaning its dark, daring hue doesn't look misplaced. However, choosing a dustier or paler alternative may be better in more traditional homes.

'Yes, we have seen a trend from muted grays and “greiges” to blue-grays – and cooler grays,' says Paige NeJame, the owner of CertaPro Painters in Boston.

We may be looking at this color inside Blake and Ryan's home; however, Paige explains that the demand for gray-blue is just as evident in exterior paint projects – so if this vibrant tone doesn't align with your interiors, you can always go bold outside. Blake's gray-blue paint is equally sought-after among designers. 

'Gray-blue can become the next significant color trend in interior design. This adaptable hue suits various styles, from traditional to contemporary. Its calming effect contributes to a sense of tranquility within your living space,' says Artem Kropovinsky, an interior designer and founder of Arsight, based in New York City.

As for kick-starting the color wash paint trend, Homes & Gardens' Editor in Chief Lucy Searle comments: 'Color washing has been used for centuries, but it was last popular in the 1980s when seemingly every wall was decorated with some kind of paint effect or another, from rag-rolling to sponging. Color washing, for me, was always the most refined of the various looks and I've certainly seen it re-emerge from obscurity, featuring in beautiful, interior designer curated homes. In fact, it has been used across ceilings and walls very effectively in some projects.

'It's simple to achieve yourself, and inexpensive, too, so you can easily mimic Blake and Ryan's wall: paint on a base coat in your chosen color, allow to dry, then use a natural sea sponge (like these from Amazon) to randomly wipe on a new, water-diluted, more translucent coat in the same color that's one tone different to the base coat, either lighter or darker. Practise first!'

Offering a slower pace of life than its slightly southern neighbor, Manhattan – the rural town is a magnet for celebrities, including Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, and Mike Myers. The Westchester town is, according to the New York Times, a ‘little bit more country’ than its 'better-known neighbors' – a fact that has no doubt influenced Blake and Ryan's decorating choices.

'Gone are the days where we would only paint wood cabinetry white and cover up the beautiful veining and artistry of natural millwork,' says Natalia Miyar of Natalia Miyar Atelier.

'I like to embrace organic materials and unveiling spaces clad in wood. Kitchens will have wood cabinetry and wood flooring, and some living spaces will be adorned with wood paneling. This aesthetic is a chic celebration of nature and the places where these high-end woods were sourced.'

Of course, the level of wood you use should depend on how much you like the material, but there's no denying that, in rural homes particularly, this style will endure and evolve with the landscape.  

New York is home to many celebrities, but not all choose to live upstate – though not all are like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. 

Despite gaining fame on the west coast, Hollywood's power couple reside with their four children in rural Pound Ridge – a leafy town in Westchester County, around one hour from Manhattan. The allure of the all-over blue color is no surprise to expert Dominic Myland, the CEO of Mylands House of Color, who has observed an increase in demand for blue hues in the last year. 

'Blue has an enduring appeal and is very versatile. Light blue can be very soothing while more saturated blues can be stimulating,' he says. All shades of blue tap into the color trend; however, brighter tones like Blake and Ryan's are described by Dominic as 'the star of the show.'

We love how the couple opted for a vibrant azure-style shade (like the one we've color matched below), but you can recreate the look with similar tones, such as cobalt.

'For those wanting a bolder look, cobalt and royal blue are guaranteed to create a statement. The eclectic tones will have a striking effect on the room's ambiance, bringing vibrance and energy,' Dominic says.  And he is not alone in his observations.

'Working with shades of blue is endlessly interesting – and playing with tones and textures can change it from subtle and serene to a vibrant jewel box, 'says Samantha Todhunter, the founder of Samantha Todhunter Design.  

The designer says that there are no 'hard and fast rules about blue'; however, like always, it is important to consider lighting levels – as this will impact the color's shade. 'Don’t fight the lack of natural light in a room and choose a more intense color in those with north-facing aspects,' she says. 

And, if you're looking to play with this paint idea without a commitment as big as Blake and Ryan's, Dominic recommends experimenting with a smaller area – such as a mirror or statement window frame – so you can flirt with its style without overpowering your entire room. 

Hollywood's favorite couple, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, just purchased a new home in a quiet Welsh village – an ocean away from Los Angeles' buzz. 

The £1.5 million ($1.86 million) four-bedroom property is reportedly the 'poshest house on the road’ – around five miles from Ryan's football club, Wrexham AFC. The actor (known for Dead Pool and Free Guy) purchased the North Wales football club with Hollywood counterpart actor Rob McElhenney for $2.5 million in November 2020 and often visits the club with his wife, actress Blake Lively.

Alongside a series of eighteenth and nineteenth-century homes, the area boasts a late fifteenth-century church, All Saints in Gresford, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. There are also several four-star pubs – where we can hope to see the couple celebrating a post-match win. 

Similar to Marford, the New York Times describes the family's US hometown as a 'rural alternative to nearby commuter towns' that offers desired privacy and is 'a little bit more country' to its upstate neighbors. 

Unsurprisingly, the couple's home is one of the most stylish (yet unmistakably rustic) in the area – boasting a gray-painted facade and a striking black porch, for which we've already penned our love. 

Blake and Ryan are yet to share a glimpse of their new home on social media – but we'll be sure to share any images as soon as the day arrives. 

Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, and Ryan Reynolds are forces in their own right, but when they come together, the internet goes into a spiral, naturally. 

Most recently, Taylor's fans have noticed a similarity between the stained-glass window seen in her Grammy award-winning music video, All Too Well: The Short Film, and one in the Lively-Reynolds household. Screened at the Tribeca and Toronto International Film Festivals – and with over 85 million views on YouTube to date – the film has gained Taylor international recognition as a director (yet another skill for her résumé). However, fans might not have known that they were likely, and unsuspectingly, looking around Blake and Ryan Reynolds' family home while they were watching it.

Though Blake and Taylor are yet to confirm the rumor, fans have put forward a convincing argument – stemming from the window seen from the 47th second of the film below. The distinct stained pane features a motif that resembles the one Blake later posted on her Instagram account.

Though this post came several months later, the landing looks identical to the one in the video.

The film refers to 'An Upstate Escape' – conveniently similar to the location of the couple's property. Even more conveniently, however, Blake and Taylor Swift are known to be good friends (as the 7th photo in the same carousel already indicated).

Data scientist Shane Lee from the real estate company RealtyHop says that a black exterior, much like Blake and Ryan's, is increasingly popular in New York, where the couple resides. And consequently, the tone is likely to boost their home's value (if they were looking to sell, that is).

'In New York State, many agents and interior designers have noticed that you can charge a premium of $15K-$20K simply by painting your house black,' she says. Christmas is the best (and arguably only) time to overindulge in glitz and glamor, but is there such a thing as too much glitter? According to Blake Lively, there certainly isn't.

With her floral pumpkin arrangements and perfectly painted unicorn pumpkins, this is not the first time the actress, known for her roles in The Age of Adaline and Gossip Girl has impressed us with her creative skills. With her unicorn cake made for her daughter's birthday impressing us in 2021, too, we are starting to see a theme in the Lively-Reynolds household.

Alongside the delicious-looking pumpkin sour bread (inspired by baker Sourdough Enzo on Instagram), Blake showed off her perfect pumpkin painting ideas, almost definitely inspired by her young daughters, with not-so-spooky white and pink unicorn faces adding a fun childish touch to the otherwise traditionally scary carved fruit. 

White pumpkins seem to be a trend for the family this year. Another key factor to consider is the shape; as Hamish reminds us, there are more shapes to choose from than the square design from Blake's Instagram.

‘While Blake has gone for a square tile, this trend isn’t limited to this shape. Take a look at brick tiles too if the square isn’t for you,’ Hamish urges. 

‘Our Oasis tiles have beautiful color variations to create interest in a small bathroom. What is important about this trend is that regardless of which shape you opt for, make it seamless by sticking to just one tile and only one color to the walls and ceiling.’

3. Check suitability 

While we’re all swooning over this trend at present, Hamish encourages us to spend some time making sure your tiles will top interior design trends long into the future. 

‘Before you go all out, just check that the tile is suitable for the area you want to place it. And, importantly, check if the tile needs sealing. If it’s a natural material – like marble or encaustic, then you will need to seal it to ensure it maintains its beauty in years to come. We also recommend that if you go for a crackle-glazed tile, you seal this too.'
