'The conversational seating technique focuses on creating intimate and engaging spaces by arranging seating to promote an easier interaction. Usually, this is achieved by creating a circular or semi-circular layout, inward-facing sections, or using modular outdoor furniture that can be adapted for different group sizes,' Bo says.

'This makes for a more active set-up, where you can keep eye contact and have a conversation, making the outdoor space feel more inviting and cohesive.'

Perfecting the layout is critical to the 'conversational seating' method, but as Bo explains, we should also consider our materials carefully.

'Materials and comfort also play a crucial role—deep cushions, weather-resistant furniture, and integrated features like coffee tables can help to enhance the experience,' he says.

'Think about the space between furniture and ensure a balance between openness and a cosy feel, you don’t want it to feel too rigid, and you also want to create a sense of togetherness.'

As much as I always adored open shelving in my living room and bedroom (where, I confess, it doubles as a bookshelf), it never made sense to bring it to the kitchen.

It goes without saying that this space is prone to splashes and spills, especially around the stove. While I was prepared to tackle the inevitable dust in other rooms, the mess from food prep didn't seem worth it. Then Cameron Diaz changed my mind.

It's no secret that we're slightly envious of Cameron Diaz's Beverly Hills residence: a quietly luxurious farmhouse complete with a white marble kitchen and high-ceilinged living space. There's a lot to feel influenced by – but arguably, nothing is quite as inspiring as her backyard – where the actress experiments with a clever vertical garden trick.

In her yard, Cameron has planted a collection of tall olive trees, all of which climb up her otherwise conventional gray-painted exterior wall. While we admit that the wall does not deserve to be labeled as 'unsightly,' it would be significantly less interesting without the vertical planting that adds lush interest against the blank backdrop. 

In strategically planting trees in front of the wall, Cameron has discreetly turned a conventional space into something of a talking point – and landscape experts say we can easily do the same. 

'When it comes to hiding an unsightly wall, using a vertical plant is a fantastic way that can greatly enhance the appearance of your outdoor space,' says Nashville-based landscape expert Gene Caballero.

How to recreate Cameron Diaz's vertical planting trick 

Cameron has opted for olive trees in her Californian backyard, but Gene says there are many other options that will thrive in all climates. The plant that comes out on top? The climbing hydrangea.

'One of the best plants to consider for hiding an ugly wall is the climbing hydrangea. This plant features beautiful foliage and clusters of white flowers, creating a stunning visual display,' he says.

'The climbing hydrangea has a vine-like growth habit and can be trained to climb and cover the wall effectively. It adheres to surfaces using aerial rootlets, ensuring secure attachment. 'The Virginia Creeper is a fast-growing plant that can cover a wall with its dense foliage.' The plant also adapts well to different light conditions, meaning it can thrive in various soil types nationwide. 

'In my experience, these plants have proven to be successful choices for hiding unsightly walls. Their ability to climb and cover vertical surfaces, coupled with their attractive foliage and adaptability, make them ideal for transforming an eyesore into a beautiful feature in your outdoor space.'

It's easy to feel a little bit envious of Cameron Diaz. The actress owns a Lake-Como-inspired Montecito estate – complete with sweeping high ceilings and a timeless color palette. But, just when we thought we were already jealous enough, we spotted her kitchen. 

Cameron, known for Charlie's Angels and The Mask, recently teamed up with her Hollywood counterpart Gwyneth Paltrow (or, rather, her brand Goop Kitchen), who created a salad to pair with her Sauvignon Blanc in the kitchen. And while it's easy to get excited about the pair's collab, we admit we were slightly more distracted by Cameron's kitchen in the background. 

Featuring veined monochromatic marble, sleek wooden cabinets, and understated gold hardware, the kitchen subtly radiates quiet luxury – this season's chicest design trend. But what is quiet luxury? And how does Cameron get it so right? Here, designers weigh in on the discussion. 

'Quiet luxury is exactly what it sounds like – achieved using understated high-quality finishes,' says Chicago-based designer Paige Garland. 'If a client came to me requesting a "quiet luxury" style kitchen, I would think of patinaed unlacquered brass, subtle marble veining, and a little warmth – nothing too stark or contrasted.' 

This is precisely what we see in Cameron Diaz's kitchen. 

'Unless high contrast is your thing – I love to highlight an ultra-eye-catching stone [like Cameron's],' she comments. 'Instead of a traditional tiled backsplash, bring your countertop material up the wall' for a subtle yet powerful, quiet-luxe aesthetic. 

And marble aside, Paige says that Cameron's high-quality cabinetry, woodwork, and finishes further pay homage to this ever-emerging kitchen trend. 'Care and attention to detail are key in this style,' she says.

Like the actress, the designer recommends a neutral color palette and encourages us to mix our materials. 'If you're going with painted cabinets, consider a two-toned look or pair your cabinetry with a stained wood island.' she says.

'Quiet luxury isn't overtly extravagant. You want to create a clean, peaceful atmosphere that doesn't feel boring. Mix in antiques and heirlooms when you get the chance to add a personal twist, and most importantly, make sure it's extremely functional  – there's nothing luxurious about a kitchen with a poor layout. And, when in doubt, talk to a designer.'

In the past, Cameron worked with esteemed designer Kelly Wearstler – a pioneer of quiet luxury. The SoCal designer is famed for her exploration of materiality, color, forms, and an intuitive juxtaposition of contemporary and vintage, architectural and organic, graphic and instinctual: the fundamentals of the trend.

‘Timeless white kitchens will be big in 2023,' says kitchen designer Tom Howley. Tom says he has observed a shift in how we want our homes to look, feel, and function over the past three years – 'having transitioned from the bustle of commuting to an office into a work-from-home lifestyle' – but white is versatile enough to adapt to all our kitchen needs.

'We need our homes to feel that much roomier, lighter, and brighter. White kitchens do this perfectly, offering an energizing, transformative aesthetic to any space and mastering the art of illusion, making smaller rooms feel bigger,’ he says.

It's hard to disagree with Gordon Ramsey, especially when it comes to cookware recommendations. And it would seem that Los Angeles' most famous figures are equally willing to follow his lead. 

The Michelin Star restaurant owner and Hell's Kitchen star has built a reputation as one of the most influential chefs of our time – so of course, when he reveals his favorite appliances, we rush to take note. 'I call this: Whatever-you-got Ramen,' Cameron says. 'One of my favorite quick go-to meals where I take your classic instant ramen packet and dress it up a bit with whatever vegetables I happen to have in my fridge!' The actress used whatever she had at the time, but she urges you to use 'whatever fits your flavor profile, and enjoy.'

Catwoman actress Halle Berry took to Instagram to share a recipe of her own – Keto Bourbon Chicken – which she made virtually alongside chef Maria Emmerich. 

The footage shows Halle's modern kitchen in all its beauty – from her matte brown cabinets to her sleek cabinets. Stealing our attention, however, is Halle's HexClad, which she uses to cook her chicken and mix the ingredients together. And, of course, the result has sparked a newfound craving for bourbon chicken.

We may have already penned a love letter to Hailey Bieber's kitchen – and the appliances she uses – but her HexClad deserves a moment of its own. 

In the footage, the model demonstrates how to make chocolate protein pancakes that, she suggests, are perfect for relaxing Sunday mornings, when you have more time to enjoy breakfast. 'Yes, we actually are in my real kitchen, in my real house; this is not a set,' Hailey says – shortly before pouring the pancake mixture into the non-stick pan.
