If we are honest, a winter garden rarely has the same aura and beauty as peak summer, but in Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel’s Brentwood home, it’s an entirely different story.

Their 1938 Georgian Revival, affectionately known as Park House, sits on just over an acre of mature grounds. Originally designed by architect Gerard Colcord, the home is surrounded by sycamore trees, red brick paths, and white wood siding, making the property a trove of winter garden ideas that are worth replicating.

The most beautiful (and personal) bookcases are those that aren't afraid to be filled. Just ask David and Victoria Beckham, who recently offered a look at a towering timber book wall that serves as a masterclass in using vertical space.

Appearing to sit within their rustic Cotswolds home, the floor-to-ceiling bookcase is filled from shelf to ceiling, with rows of books creating a layered backdrop.

If you're looking for how to style a bookcase as a collector of many titles, this is the blueprint. The volume gives the room a perfectly imperfect feel, while the arrangement makes the wall feel deeply personal. To get the look, I love this farmhouse bookcase from Wayfair, which has the warmth needed to create a similar country-home feel.

For a bookshelf this full, interior designer Barbra Fordyce, founder of Ginger Lemon Indigo, suggests starting with a strong sense of weight.

'A bookshelf packed with books can either feel like a curated home library or like clutter, and the difference is rarely how many books you own. It’s how you place them,' Barbra explains.

'Weight distribution is design 101. Start with larger, heavier books at the base of the bookcase and let things get smaller as you move upward. It keeps the whole piece from feeling top-heavy.'

The same thinking can be applied across each individual shelf. 'That same principle applies horizontally,' says Barbra.

'On each shelf, I like to put the larger books toward the outside and the smaller ones toward the center. It’s a small adjustment, but it gives the eye a sense of balance rather than making the shelf feel like everything has simply been crammed into the available space.'

Victoria's living room shelving idea is largely made up of neat rows, but varying the orientation of a few books can introduce another layer of interest. 'I always say that the books standing up do the organizing, but the books lying down do the styling,' Barbra notes.

'A stack of two or three books lying on their sides breaks up the rhythm of all those vertical spines and gives you a little landing pad for something decorative, such as a small bowl, a piece of coral, a candle, or anything with texture.'

In a living room with high ceilings like David and Victoria's, leaving some space between the objects helps a wall of books feel substantial while keeping the room open.

'With a very full bookcase, negative space becomes just as important as the books themselves,' says Barbra. 'I like to carve out a little breathing room around eye level for a small piece of art or a trailing plant, and another pocket around hip height for a lamp. Battery-operated lamps have become so good that you no longer necessarily need to fight for an outlet behind the bookcase.'

When organizing a bookshelf intentionally, you should also consider color. '[It's] another easy way to make a busy shelf feel intentional,' Barbra explains. 'If someone loves color, grouping books loosely by hue can make the whole bookcase read almost like a piece of art. For a more neutral look, turning some books around so the pages face out instead of the spines can instantly soften the visual noise with no color sorting required.'

Lastly, recreating the warmth of David and Victoria's library wall is about knowing where to leave space.

'But if I had to give just one piece of advice, it would be to protect the empty space just as much as you style the full space,' Barbra concludes. 'It’s tempting to keep adding books until every inch is covered, but those little pockets of breathing room are what allow your eye to rest. That’s what makes a packed bookshelf feel collected and curated rather than overwhelming.'

High-profile event producer Michelle Rago is sometimes called the 'Queen of Luxury Weddings. She is the mind behind the Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz Beckham nuptials, and parties at iconic venues like the Vatican and Belmond Resorts. Thus, when it came time to design her own home in Lambertville, New Jersey, of course, hospitality became the center.

The brief was lofty: to transform Rago's 1924 Craftsman-era Sears, Roebuck & Co. kit house into a space that both preserved architectural character and introduced a strong dose of personality while prioritizing hosting. Michelle tells Homes & Gardens. 'Think luxurious London townhouse meets historic river town tucked in the garden of Eden.'

Naturally, Bryan O'Sullivan was the only person for the job. After a kismet meeting through (where else?) Claridge's, the duo set about infusing the home with a combination of her lifetime of travel and her passion for hosting and entertaining. 'We made the perfect partners, as Bryan O'Sullivan Studio understands my passion for entertaining and hospitality while not sacrificing beauty for function,' says Michelle.

Ultimately, the ideas behind the gorgeous final product were simple.

Michelle explains: 'I am a beauty-chaser in all that I do. I view beauty and hospitality as something tangible and indulgent achieved with the best materials, a solid through-line of comfort and of course delight.'

This philosophy led to a home that feels deeply layered, intentional, and warm. From the entryway, guests feel like they are stepping into Michelle's world.

This balanced aesthetic came down to a careful conversation between the house itself and the decor.

'We wanted the house to feel as though it had evolved naturally over time, rather than appearing as if it had been designed in a single moment,' Bryan O'Sullivan tells Homes & Gardens. 'The architecture gave us a wonderful framework, which we layered with bespoke furniture, contemporary craftsmanship and artistic moments that celebrate Michelle's personality.'

He adds: 'Throughout the home, we balanced historic references with bold colour, pattern and materiality, creating interiors that feel timeless but also spirited and full of life.'

Though Michelle declares that the home is an 'evolution' of everything she loves, if she had to pick just one favorite room, it would be between her bedroom and the home library. One of her non-negotiables for the redesign, the space is a perfect, cozy alcove.

She explains: 'My direction for the library was a jewel box of a room that houses all my treasures and my beloved cookbooks. I don't have televisions in the house, so I wanted a year-round reading room and place to dream. I have found when my house guests get up before me, they are tucked in one of the big cozy chairs, coffee in hand waiting for the day to begin.'

Naturally, Michelle's passion for hosting served as a major inspiration for the kitchen. Rather than aesthetics, the space was built around how the kitchen would be used.

She explains: 'As an event producer, focusing on the flow of the “entertaining" spaces was a top priority. I shared specifics of what my usual intimate dinner parties entail to prioritize those details.'

The relatively open plan of the space leans into this functionality. Michelle says: 'Socializing with the guests hanging around the kitchen island and being able to interact with guests in the lounge while finishing off a pasta dish was key.'

Thus, the kitchen is designed as a dinner party host's dream. Michelle states: 'I love to cook so the kitchen has all the whistles and bells with a grand island for food prep which doubles as a buffet for standing cocktail parties. It has a double oven, plate warmer and an absolute must was two dishwashers with one dedicated for glasses only!'

Of course, the most important areas are often the most contentious, and Michelle cites the kitchen island as the only point of disagreement between her and Bryan throughout the design process.

Michelle jokes: 'I was dead set against it and made them redesign it an embarrassing number of times. Thankfully they persisted, and, of course, the island is the heart of the kitchen and the place where everyone gathers.'

One of the most unique features of the home is the navy scullery abutting the dining room. Rather than feeling old-fashioned, the addition is supremely charming, and rooted in Michelle's hosting philosophy.

'There are petite bars tucked through the spaces and freestanding champagne buckets allowing guests to help themselves to a refresh,' she states. 'During parties, the Scullery turns into a grand bar that feels like a speakeasy with a vaulted ceiling that has a mural fashioned after 1930s menu design.'

Michelle continues: 'I want my guests to feel celebrated wherever they decide to linger throughout the house. Whether it’s a quiet coffee in the library where I collect cookbooks & my travel treasures or a gossip session in the scullery while making martinis or choosing the perfect champagne, for me hospitality should be relaxed, quiet and intentional.'

Bryan explains that decorating with antiques was fundamental to creating the sense that the house had been collected over many years.

He states: 'We sourced pieces with character and provenance, from Regency furniture and mid-century Italian lighting to Art Deco tables, and layered them alongside Michelle's own collections, travel mementos and family heirlooms. Every object has a story to tell, and together they create a home that feels deeply personal rather than overly decorated.'

'It's this dialogue between bespoke pieces, antiques and meaningful objects that gives the interiors their richness and authenticity.'

'My bedroom is my sanctuary,' says Michelle.

Rather than a muted white or gray color palette, it's a much more cheerful butter yellow shade.

'I moved the walls to expand the space and create the feeling of a one-bedroom suite, a true place to linger,' Michelle tells Homes & Gardens. 'The inspiration for my bathroom is Claridge's of course, and it feels like a true destination. And finally, as I spend my life packing for trips, I needed the walk-in closet to be functional, but terribly chic!'

Though Bryan finds it difficult to choose just one favorite room in Michelle's home, he has particular affection for the whimsical study.

He explains: 'With its leopard-print wallpaper, lacquered desk and chinoiserie details, it's wonderfully expressive and unapologetically bold. It perfectly captures Michelle's confidence, warmth and sense of fun, while also embodying the playful spirit that runs throughout the entire home. It's a room that surprises people and always sparks conversation, which I think is exactly what great interiors should do.

However, the home is much more than one note.

'Every space has its own distinct personality, from the vibrant blue scullery to the one-of-a-kind outdoor dining table, but together they create a cohesive journey that feels elegant, welcoming and comfortable to live in every day,' says Bryan. 'The house is designed to encourage conversation, gathering and memorable moments with family and friends.'

The outdoor 'dance shack' is a perfect example of this personality. The shed-like structure becomes a venue for late-night partying. It's pure fun to complement the personality-filled interiors of the rest of the home.

A kitchen wall might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of hanging oil paintings in gilded frames – especially when it is a chef’s kitchen, as in Ina Garten’s case. Yet in her East Hampton home, a small grid of fruit still lifes hangs behind the island, bringing a traditional note to the otherwise practical space.

Set against neutral walls and stainless steel, the antiqued-gold frames give the kitchen a sense of history without competing with its more utilitarian details. It's an old-school way of decorating – one that elevates how we see kitchen artwork as we look into the year ahead.

Decorating with art is often overlooked in cooking spaces, where cabinet colors, backsplash tiles, and open shelving tend to take priority. However, as Ina reminds us, a kitchen is still part of the home, and its walls deserve the same attention as those in a living room or bedroom.

If you want to take a more personal approach, Ben, founder of framing studio Frameology, suggests starting with something you already have.

‘When it comes to displaying artwork in your kitchen, one fun suggestion is to frame photos of your favorite dishes from any of your travels, or beautiful restaurant interiors you have snapped photos of,’ he says. ‘Culinary arts and interior design are an art after all.’

It is a particularly beautiful way to make use of the photographs that tend to sit untouched on your phone. ‘I love this idea because I know how many people take pictures of their food or restaurant decor, but the photos do not go anywhere beyond their camera roll,’ Ben says. ‘This is a great way to make the most of those photos and bring the joy of memorable meals into your kitchen.’

You do not need an empty wall to make the idea work. In Ina’s kitchen, marble shelves provide another place to introduce artwork, alongside stacks of dishware and cookbooks.

‘No gallery wall space? No problem,’ Ben says. ‘You can do the same on a kitchen shelf with just a couple of frames. Pick out some of your favorite cookbooks to stack beside the frames, which will also help you determine what color frames you need so they are cohesive with the books.’

A couple of framed photographs or paintings can sit alongside cookbooks and ceramics, giving an open shelf a more collected appearance without making it difficult to use.

Ina’s fruit still lifes also show that kitchen art doesn't have to be literal. Food photography, landscapes, sketches, and traditional paintings can all work, as long as they connect to your taste or the room itself. Choose pieces you would be happy to live with elsewhere in your home, then consider how their frames relate to the finishes already in the kitchen.

Ultimately, the aim is to give your kitchen the same personal touches you would add elsewhere in the house. And of course, Ina has already provided us with the perfect blueprint.

Is there anything more classic than mid-century modern style? The design movement emphasizing clean lines, functional forms, and a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors gained popularity from about 1945 to 1970 – and it's been a favorite of the design community ever since.

Mid-century modern calls to mind design icons like Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles and Ray Eames, but as a full-time Celebrity Style expert, I have a few other names to add to that list.

The curved furnishings and warm minimalism of this style are beloved by many of the world's best designers, making them staples in the homes of high-profile actors, singers, and tastemakers worldwide. From mid-century stars like Cher and Sonny Bono to contemporary icons like Emma Chamberlain, the style is everywhere.

However, not all mid-century modern spaces are created equal. Out of the hundreds of celebrity homes I've written about over the years, these are the five mid-century modern living rooms I haven't been able to stop thinking about.

1. Dakota Johnson: The Classic Look

Dakota Johnson's mid-century modern living room lives rent-free in my head.

Once described by Johnson as 'like a treehouse on a boat,' the Los Angeles home itself is a jewel of mid-century style. Charles Maston designed the charming property in 1947, as a home for him and his wife. After purchasing the house in 2016, Dakota Johnson worked with acclaimed design studio Pierce & Ward to strike a gorgeous balance between period details and modern elegance.

To recreate her look, I'd recommend investing in cocooning textiles to contrast with clean wooden lines. This green velvet cushion from Wayfair is a simple and affordable place to start.

2. Alexandra Daddario: Retro Elegance

Alexandra Daddario's 'treehouse inspired' Brentwood home (are you sensing a theme?) is a close second in terms of classic mid-century interiors. Designed by Matt Kivlin in 1959 and purchased by Daddario in 2023, its interiors lean into the nostalgia of the retro aesthetic. Rather than updating the mid-century modern look, it runs with a stylish classic. As in Dakota's home, the connection between in and out of doors is made with massive floor to ceiling windows.

3. Chrissy Teigen: The Breezy California Edit

Though I personally love a classic mid-century modern space, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's Beverly Hills home is a masterclass in taking the good bones of the style and updating it with organic California minimalism. Using a slightly cooler color palette, their designer Jake Arnold brought a breeziness to the living room. From the boucle sofa to the fringe light, it's the perfect fusion of mid-century and more contemporary styles.

I love that this room reads instantly as luxurious.

4. Jennifer Aniston: A Contemporary Angle

Similarly, in her living room, Jennifer Aniston made mid-century modern all her own. Working with Stephen Shadley on her 1965 Bel Air home, Aniston aimed to maintain the modernist ethos of the property while integrating more softness. Cool charcoals and unique objets d'art give it a distinctly bohemian feel. Instead of choosing only mid-century modern furniture pieces, Jennifer mixed the curves of this style with more contemporary pieces.

A great leather chair is a must-have if you want to emulate her style (I've been coveting this set of two striking faux leather accent seats from Target).

5. Amber Valetta: A Minimalist Twist

Last but not least, Amber Valetta's mid-century modern living room earns its place on this list for its minimal take on the popular style.

Featuring original mid-century furniture pieces like the Cloud Coffee Table by Louise Liljencrantz and Italian Wingback chairs, Amber's designer, Ross Cassidy, made vintage pieces feel fresh and never-before-seen against a calming, mostly white background. I love the jute rug for an extra splash of the natural world.

Whether you're a die-hard mid-century modern fan or a recent convert, the principles behind this style influence virtually all of contemporary design. Looking back at these quintessential spaces offers insight into how designers have taken these concepts and run with them.

Every Halloween, we find ourselves walking the incredibly thin line between being fun and celebratory without falling on the wrong side of gimmicky. It is an easy holiday to overdo; however, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have found the sweet spot.

In their upstate New York home, the couple perfected outdoor fall decorating ideas using pumpkins, dried cornstalks, and flowers that complement the dark timber (rather than compete with it). Their porch feels distinctly seasonal without leaning too heavily into Halloween, meaning it'll look just as beautiful on November 1st.

‘This Halloween entrance is a great example of seasonal curb appeal that still feels warm and livable,’ says Marilyn Comiskey, a San Diego real estate expert and team owner at The Comiskey Group.

‘The flowers, pumpkins, and simple decorations make the front of the home feel special without making it look too staged. It is also a wonderful setting for family photos and the kind of memories people will enjoy looking back on for years.’

There's something to be said for the porch's lack of perfect symmetry. The pumpkins are grouped rather than arranged in a precise row, while the cornstalks sit to one side of the entrance. That slight imbalance keeps the display from feeling overly polished and gives the natural materials room to stand out.

Plus, you don't necessarily need daisies to get a similar effect. Traditional fall flowers can work just as well, especially when paired with pumpkins in different sizes. ‘Pumpkins are always a fall must-have because they work so naturally with seasonal flowers,’ Marilyn says.

‘Their orange, cream, and red tones look beautiful next to yellow and white mums. Using pumpkins in different sizes also makes the display feel more relaxed and interesting.’

Blake and Ryan strike the balance between the house and its Halloween decor. The pumpkins bring in the colors that are synonymous with fall, while flowers soften the stone. It all feels celebratory without ruining the home’s aesthetic – something of which we could all take note.

In 2027, maximalism has gotten louder, bolder, and more colorful, and minimalism is also becoming more extreme. Rather than the simple white and gray spaces that once passed for calming displays, homeowners are craving minimalist interiors that feature more interesting architectural details and eye-catching stand-alone accents.

A great example of this can be found in Kim Kardashian's bathroom. Kim's Hidden Hills mansion is known for its extreme take on minimalism, featuring spartan, almost monastery-like spaces. As recently shared on her Instagram, the bathroom is no exception, including a walk-in 'invisible' shower against the back wall, fronted by a gray, quarry-like bathtub.

Axel Vervoordt, the designer who ideated the life-as-art home, explained that the wabi-sabi look allows the architecture to speak for itself. In his own words: 'Simplicity and proportion are the only decoration.'

As homeowners scramble to create minimalist bathrooms that exude true luxury in a crowded market, spaces like Kim's are set to become increasingly common in 2027.

Rather than using a whole shower enclosure, this minimalist design will create the illusion of a larger space and allow light to pass through, making the bathroom feel more open and airy. Mike states: 'Wall-mounted taps will keep your basin or vanity unit free from unnecessary accessories. By mounting them onto the walls, you can hide as much of the plumbing as possible leaving countertops free, maximizing space. This works for vanity units with basins but also for baths too.'

'Matching all of the hardware in your bathroom is one of the simpler design choices you can make to achieve the invisible bathroom aesthetic,' says Mike. 'The room should feel as cohesive as possible so coordinate your taps, door handles, shower enclosures, waste covers and plugs if you can. Whether you go for matte black, distressed silver, aged bronze or brushed gold, consider carefully how it will pair with the rest of the bathroom.'

'Maintaining the right balance of light, heat, ventilation, shading and even humidity in the greenhouse can transform the growing environment so that near-perfect conditions are met at all times,' Tori says. 'Computer control of these systems is available to ensure the ideal balance for your plants and your guests.'

Lighting can help during darker months, both for using the greenhouse and for keeping plants growing when natural light is limited. 'As well as lighting the interior for working, artificial light in a greenhouse helps with plant growth,' Tori adds. 'Artificial light can support plants when natural sunlight is insufficient. This can extend daylight hours, improve plant productivity, and help enable year-round production.'

'My advice is to watch scale and function first,' Tasha adds. 'Do not buy an antique just because it is charming. Make sure the drawers work, the chair is sturdy, and the piece actually fits where you want to use it. The best antiques are the ones that can still be used, not just looked at.'
