'A stout fork with fairly short, broad, sharp edged prongs is desirable for use in turning soil or mixing in compost,' says Dr. Mike Arnold. 'Alternatively, a thinner pronged fork with longer prongs would be desirable for spready straw or other mulching materials,' he adds.

Furthermore, Beckham’s selection is among the best rose varieties for a floral border because it remains vibrant throughout the growing months without needing to be replanted. Bull notes: 'The Queen of Sweden is repeat flowering, which means it will begin to produce blooms in late spring, and provided you deadhead it regularly, it should continue to flower until very early winter. If you want a boundary to look good, this is the perfect rose for the job.'

In addition to his choice of flower, the athlete’s technique provides a masterclass in how to plant roses. 'In the video he asks his wife, Victoria Beckham, whether the hole he has dug is deep enough,' says Bull. She continues, 'When planting a rose, you need to dig a hole that is two inches deeper than the height of the root ball, and almost twice as wide, so it looks like David has done a pretty great job here.'

'Gardens aren’t just somewhere to host the occasional barbecue anymore – they are increasingly seen as an extension of the home itself.'

Mike Fretto, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Neighbor agrees: 'The biggest shift we’re seeing is people treating outdoor spaces more like interiors – breaking them into distinct areas with different purposes.'

'Just as interiors benefit from clearly defined areas, gardens also feel more considered when different ‘zones’ are introduced. A pergola creates a natural focal point for outdoor dining or lounging, making the garden feel structured and thoughtfully designed.'

If you focus on garden room ideas that are more substantial, it could certainly increase the value of your property, although there is a larger initial outlay. Henry Stoll, Founder of Enduria Structures explains that 'A well-designed garden benefits from distinct zones that serve different purposes at different times of day.' 'Smaller, more relaxed pockets with informal seating can bring more depth and flexibility to the space,' adds Henry.

'Because so many people are building these types of “zones,” we’re seeing more and more customers come to expect this high level of design and comfort for their outdoor spaces,' adds Mike.

He continues: 'This only works with hardy varieties (Aquadulce is a classic and reliable hardy fava bean) and if you have well-draining soil, as beans sitting in sodden winter soil can rot. Simply plant the beans in holes two inches deep and at least eight inches apart.'

You will still get a reliably large onion next year from a spring planting, and there is a wider range of varieties (like the red onions David was picking) that you can start growing in spring.'

As far as care goes, Swainston recommends keeping the plant hydrated so that it grows tall like Beckham's. 'Kale plants want to grow in rich and well-drained soils and to be kept well-watered through the summer,' he says.

Additionally, these vegetables will reach optimal health with the help of fertilizers. 'They are hungry crops and will benefit if you can add organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to the site ahead of planting the kale. Feeding plants with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer during the season will also encourage the growth of lots of foliage and kale leaves to harvest.'

'It is interesting to see that David’s plants are uncovered,' he says. He removes another plant with ease from its plastic holding cell by repeatedly tapping on all sides of the container. To replicate his technique, Bull recommends: 'To give it the best start, once you’ve filled the hole with compost, place two inches of mulch on the surface of the planting area to keep the soil moist and suppress potential weed growth.'

'Usefully for the Beckhams, lavender is one of the very few plants that chickens tend to avoid eating,' says Bull. She continues, 'They might have a peck at it, but they usually leave it alone, and it has even been known to have a calming effect on chickens. So, once their beautiful pathway border is established, no harm will come to it on account of their resident hens.'

Luckily, the lavender landscaping technique is incredibly replicable. Bull states: 'This look is very simple to recreate. You can plant smaller shrubs in the fall, which will take root in the ground over winter, ready to bloom the following year. Or, you can buy larger, more established plants that are in flower from your local garden center now, and plant them at regular intervals, roughly 20 inches apart. You might want to add some gravel to your soil to improve drainage if you live in an area with higher than average rainfall.'

She continues, 'Lavender plants don’t really need fertilizing and are low maintenance for most of the year, though you will need to prune them in late fall once the flowers have all died off. This will encourage beautiful, fresh growth the following spring, and stop the plants getting too woody and unwieldy.'

Every time David and Victoria Beckham share a look inside their Cotswolds country home, we know we're going to feel at least a little bit inspired. 'This contemporary glasshouse features floor-to-ceiling window panels encased in ultra-chic black frames, with a classic pointed roof and spikes reminiscent of a traditional Victorian glasshouse. The building itself is not going to be used as a place to raise plants. Rather, it will serve as a botanically-inspired dining and entertaining space. With a hint of imagination, it's easy to see why the Beckhams' have decided to do this – the planters at the front of the glasshouse will no doubt be packed with a vibrant array of cottage garden plants, and come the summer the garden will serve as the perfect surroundings for outdoor dining,' Bull comments.

Naturally, installing a greenhouse on this scale isn't possible in most backyards (whether we plan to use it for growing or dining). However, the multi-purpose elements of the Beckhams' structure are replicable in smaller-sized yards.

'For the majority of us, installing a large-scale, bespoke greenhouse in our gardens would be somewhat of a pipedream. There are, however, tips and ideas we can take from the design of Beckham’s luxury glasshouse and the layout of his vegetable garden,' Bull comments. 'You could consider making your greenhouse a multi-purpose space too, by creating a small seating area within or just in front of it, forming a sheltered space to entertain and rest in all seasons.'

Plus, the backyard offers bite-size inspiration in the shape of an evergreen favorite: lavender.

'The path leading up to the building in the Beckhams’ garden has been recently planted with what appears to be young lavender plants. When established, this will form a beautiful and classic border teaming with bees, which will lead the eye naturally up to the entrance of the glasshouse,' Bull says.

'You can easily recreate this look, even in a small yard or vegetable garden, by marking out a path to a greenhouse using flowering shrubs or strategically placed raised beds.'

Finding the right storage, furniture, and cabinetry is fundamental to the success of your kitchen design, and quite often a mix-and-match approach with freestanding furniture can often be better than fitted kitchen cabinetry when it comes to storage.

Whether adding a single dresser, similar to English former footballing legend David Beckham's kitchen, or embracing a fully unfitted design, a freestanding kitchen lets you create a bespoke space that can grow and change as needed.

If you're still undecided, then consider the benefits of both styles. Fitted furniture can deliver a cohesive result and be made to fit compact or awkwardly shaped rooms to maximize available space. However, freestanding pieces can be moved and rearranged to suit your needs, and enhance a homey feel, but they may not offer as much kitchen storage capacity. 

Charlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio, recommends combining fitted and freestanding options if you want visual interest and versatility. ‘Fitted furniture is best used around the working areas of the kitchen, to ensure the oven is at a suitable height, for instance, and provide storage for easy access to oven trays and dishes,’ he says. ‘The rest of the room can be furnished with freestanding pieces, which add flexibility and personality.’

Many of us opened gifts of various shapes and sizes on Christmas morning, but David Beckham's was arguably the most unexpected of all. The Beckhams celebrated the holiday in their Cotswolds country abode – or, more specifically, outside in their newly developed chicken coop – home to David's presents.

'What did you get for Christmas, David?' Victoria asks. The answer was not only one but multiple chickens (or rather, 'Beckham chickens,' as Victoria names them), who had already accustomed well to their coop. 

The Cotswolds Hills, located in southwest England, is the perfect environment for keeping chickens, but with the right advice, it's more than possible to follow this age-old practice (dating back between 7,000-10,000 years) in our own backyard. 

David and Victoria chose a wooden coop surrounded by a white fence that keeps the animals safe; however, we can also build a brick alternative. After building a coop, expert Fred Miller, the founder of Chickens Eat, recommends providing comfortable nesting boxes for our hens. 'These should be clean, dry, and lined with straw or wood shavings. You should ensure one nesting box per 3-4 hens,' he comments.

It's also wise to install sturdy roosting bars for our chickens to perch on at night. 'These should be higher than the nesting boxes and designed to allow them to sit comfortably without crowding.'

Lighting, cleanliness, and security are also key to long-term chicken coop success. 'Adequate lighting is essential for egg production. Ensure your coop receives natural daylight during the day. I'm not a big fan of artificial light, so I say avoid if you can,' Fred says.

When it comes to hygiene, Fred explains we should regularly remove droppings, old bedding, and old nesting materials to limit disease and pests. We should also replace bedding as needed and clean water and feed containers regularly.

'In terms of security, lock your coop securely at night to protect your chickens from nocturnal predators like raccoons and owls. Ensure that the locks are childproof, as some raccoons are quite clever,' Fred says.

'I personally use an automatic door that I program to open and close at specific times. Chickens are trained pretty easily to go in at night on their own. This ensures they are safe should you forget to lock them up.'

'This trend is a reoccurring one we see slightly evolve year after year; in fact, the Instagram hashtag ‘modern farmhouse’ sits with 2.8 million posts and counting.'

As Melissa explains, this trend shows no sign of wavering (especially since the look is so prevalent in the Beckhams home), so how can we tap into the look? 

The trend focuses on using natural materials such as wooden furniture, textiles (such as cotton), and brass finishings,' Melissa comments. 'A key characteristic of this style is that it should look well lived-in, so worn-out pieces and vintage elements are perfect.'

'If you like a modern farmhouse style but don’t know where to start, a great way to incorporate this is through small wooden crates, which can be used as storage or simple décor,' Melissa adds. 

Alongside rustic furnishings (like David and Victoria's wooden table and tartan-upholstered armchairs), we can get the modern farmhouse look with the right hues.

'Modern farmhouse is inspired by the colors of the countryside while also keeping it fresh and contemporary. The typical color palette is a mix of neutral and pastel tones, more specifically, pastel pink, green, and blue, as well as browns and cream, Melissa says.

Patterns are similarly impactful. 'Picking the correct patterns is essential if you want to nail the modern farmhouse style. Some of the most popular patterns include floral and botanical-inspired pieces and stripe patterns.'

Planting, growing, and taking care of a vegetable garden is no easy feat. It requires close attention to sunlight, soil, competition between plants, time of year and more. However, like with most things, world-famous soccer player David Beckham makes it look simple. To what do they owe their success in the vegetable garden? We consulted with Rachel Bull, Head of Gardens at H&G to find out. Mostly, she told us, it boils down to David Beckham's use of raised beds. 'David Beckham’s organic vegetable garden looks to be in fantastic shape, with chard, kale, cabbages, lettuce, and chicory all thriving,' said Rachel. She continued, 'We can see David has chosen to grow vegetables in raised beds, which may account in part for his successful crops.'

But what are the benefits of raised garden beds? Rachel told us:  'There are many advantages to planting in raised beds rather than directly into the ground. The compost in raised beds will have better drainage and be less compacted. The soil will stay warmer for longer, too, which extends the growing season. Raised beds are also a good way to control weeds, and can prevent slugs from destroying younger crops.'

'When I got around to making some coffee with it, this was close to faultless. My espressos were professional quality and packed with flavor,' Honey explains.

'The milk texturing technology is some of the best I've tested on a single-serve coffee maker because it has sensors to auto-detect the weight of milk that you're using, and then the machine responds accordingly,' she adds.

Secondarily, the beautiful machine will elevate the look of your coffee station. She continues, 'The dressing room has oodles of natural light which is incredibly valuable for both dressing and wellbeing.  Victoria will be aware that artificial light can distort colors and skin tone, so on the rare occasions when she ditches her signature black outfits and slips into something brighter, she will be confident in looking great.' 

She adds:  'Both Beckhams are mindful of the importance of good self-care which includes essential support for mental and emotional health, so during the winter months having the luxury of a dressing room with exceptionally good daylight levels is a wise decision. For the summer they have lightweight blinds to diffuse the brightest light and prevent fading.'

Furthermore, Suzanne loves the practicality of the built-in closets which runs the length of the wall, eliminating the need for closet organizers. The Beckhams debuted their dark green velvet sofa in the documentary on David's life that was released earlier this month. In many scenes, Victoria Beckham is shown seated on the deep green couch with leaf-patterned cushions. Since the launch of the film, Google searches for dark green velvet sofas are up 550%, according to The Evergreen Agency. Furthermore, searches for 'green velvet sofas' spiked just days after the documentary was released.

So why is this look so popular? We spoke to interior design experts to get the scoop on the Beckham-inspired sofa trend.

Jemma Jaques, furniture expert and visual design lead at The Lounge Co. says, 'If you haven’t seen Victoria Beckham relaxing on her beautiful green velvet sofa, where have you been? Her lounge is elegant and feminine, yet classic and understated, and the gorgeous sofa plays a big part in that.'

The experts laud the timelessness and versatility of the colors in Victoria Beckham's sofa idea. 'If, like Mrs Beckham, you prefer to decorate with neutrals when it comes to interior décor, a green velvet sofa will make a statement without shouting too loudly,' says Jemma.

The world's tastiest new kitchens are wonderful workshops for culinary craftsmen, and David Beckham's gourmet-style kitchen is no exception.

Chef's kitchens are the ultimate in luxury for any budding cook or food enthusiast. Technological advances in kitchen design mean that creating a professional or gourmet kitchen – once reserved for the best restaurants – at home is even easier to achieve than before. 

Here's how to achieve a gourmet kitchen with design advice from the best kitchen designers and chefs.

1. Choose stain and scratch-resistant surfaces

‘When choosing a kitchen countertop for a gourmet kitchen, avoid materials that can scratch or stain easily,’ says Allison Lynch, senior design consultant at Roundhouse, which has made domestic kitchens for several chefs including Yotam Ottolenghi and Peter Gordon. 

Cooking with the confidence of a professional requires robust materials that you won’t need to give a second thought while whipping up multiple dishes. Stainless steel is the surface of choice in commercial kitchens. 

‘It is non-porous, heat resistant and you can also weld sinks and upstands into the worktop to avoid dirt taps and create speedy to scrub-down surfaces,’ enthuses Sam Hart, senior designer, Roundhouse, who used stainless steel on the cooking elevation of this kitchen. 

‘Steel can appear too industrial in a domestic space, so we used natural walnut and Shaker doors elsewhere, as well as beautiful natural quartzite, to counterbalance the harder-looking stainless steel cooking zone,’ explains Sam.

2. Invest in professional appliances

Cooking for crowds requires at least two high-capacity ovens. Eye-level designs are the easiest to monitor progress, but many chefs prefer the volume and robustness of a range cooker. 

‘Cook tops must be flexible and accommodate multiple pans. A combination of gas burners, steel plates and induction hobs will cover all bases, while features such as a teppanyaki and built-in grills are ideal for a dash of pro-chef-style culinary theatre,’ says Camille Syren, chef de projects, La Cornue. 

When designing chef's kitchens, Eggersmann Design’s creative director Gary Singer often includes high-tech appliances like built-in steam ovens and vacuum sealers for sous-vide cooking.

3. Organize your storage 

An organized kitchen is an essential component in a professional kitchen, such as David Beckham's.

Keeping a well-stocked food store is vital in busy restaurant kitchens and a generous larder cupboard or walk-in pantry is the perfect domestic equivalent. 

‘A good chef will organize contents rigidly, making sure everything is easy to see, at a glance, so that ingredients can be gathered quickly,’ says chef and author Peter Sidwell, brand ambassador for Symphony Kitchens. 

‘For the keen chef, having pots and pans close to the cooker aids optimal efficiency,’ says Richard Moore, design director, Martin Moore. Kitchen shelving can provide quick access when positioned above your cooker and is a great option for pots, pans, and utensils that are in regular use, as they are in plain sight and within reaching distance.

Simple LED strips or miniature spotlights can be used to illuminate shelf displays, enhancing their impact and adding subtle evening glamour, especially useful when you want to create a softer mood for dining.

I've tested over seventy coffee makers in the last year and the Nespresso Vertuo Creatista is still one of my favorites. It's shiny, stylish, and ultra-premium. And you don't even need to take my word for it, take David Beckham's.

There are plenty of moody shots of Mr. Beckham with his super stylish coffee maker. Aesthetically, it's easily the best single-serve coffee maker you can buy. It looks luxurious and boasts an impressive range of functions too.

I wanted to see whether this was as good as it looks (spoiler alert: it is), so I took it to our test kitchen to make everything from espresso to cold brew. The price tag is eye-watering, especially compared to other models, but if you like Nespresso's coffee makers and you want a high-spec machine, this is your bag.

Unboxing

Single-serve coffee machines have a reputation for being light and compact. This is the exception. In imitation of more substantial espresso machines, this takes up much more space on your countertop. However, in true Sage style, it looks the part. It would be at home on a barista's countertop with flashy systems and polished stainless steel.

When I first opened the box, there was lots of plastic around the machine. Once I had battled through the layers of plastic and peeled off the various stickers, my Creatista looked impressive and sparkly. If looks were everything, this would be a five-star machine.

The drip tray is magnetic, so easily slotted onto the base of the machine. Everything else was already assembled, so once I had filled the water reservoir, which annoyingly doesn't have a handle, the Creatista was ready to go. 

Nespresso recommends rinsing the machine before use. However, you need to sacrifice a pod to rinse the machine, because it won't run without one. This feels a little wasteful, but it's worth it. You don't want any factory dirt or debris ending up in your cup of joe.

Who would it suit?

Confession time, I'm not normally a big fan of Nespresso machines, because the pods aren't reusable. You can't even buy re-usable pods from Walmart, because your machine won't work with them. Not only is it bad for the environment, it's expensive too. However, I've bestowed a begrudging amount of praise on this machine since using it. It's fast, makes a good cup of coffee, and is incredibly easy to use. I've even recommended it to some friends. 

It doesn't use fresh coffee, which isn't ideal, but the pods could give a surprisingly good flavor. If you're a busy person, who would normally grab a coffee from the machine at work, this is perfect for you. It might be expensive, but for working professionals, it's worth it. You won't have pre-infusion or precision brews, but you'll have a really good coffee in two minutes. If every commute started with a cup of coffee from the Creatista, I imagine the subway would be a better place.

What is it like to use?

Given how technical this looks, it's easy to use. The whole process is quiet, which is brilliant if you're the first one to leave the house in the morning. I didn't measure more than 64 dBA of noise, so it's only as loud as a normal conversation. Nespresso sent me a range of pods, from cold brew to their standard range. You'll have to buy these separately, but they're widely available and you can choose from a range of flavored coffee pods from places like Walmart. I drank a concerning number of these coffees and was very impressed and very caffeinated by the end of my tests.

Espresso

Every good coffee starts with espresso, so I put my dedicated pod into the machine and closed the top. It took 40 seconds to dispense my espresso, which is longer than other machines, but I would put that down to 'warming up'. None of my coffee splashed up the back of the machine or out of my mug and it was 180 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to gulp down in one or enjoy in sips. 

Nespresso coffees all have really good creams, which I would normally see as indicative of good coffee. However, the Nespresso machine can't extract a crema, so instead it spins the coffee to make a 'crema' top. It's an artificial crema, so don't be deceived by looks. 

I wouldn't say that the coffee had a lot of depth, not like fresh coffee, but as coffee from a pod, it was good. My espresso was rich and a little sweet, just lacking artisanal notes.

Americano

Making an Americano is almost identical to an espresso. I just chose a different pod and the machine took exactly one minute to dispense me a good Americano. Again, it was the perfect temperature to drink and similarly delicious, if not a little flat. I don't think this machine will make you the best coffee of your life, but it will make a cup of joe that's good enough to get your out of bed in the morning.

Cappuccino

Ideally, you should always make your milk first and then brew your coffee, so to make a cappuccino, I started with the steam wand. The machine comes with a useful, stainless steel mug, which you can sit underneath the steam wand. The seat for your stainless steel mug is actually a scale that measures the weight of your milk. It uses the weight to calculate how long the machine should take to froth your milk. There are settings on top, which you can use to select how frothy and hot you want your milk to be. 

The frothiest setting was about a 50/50 split of froth and milk; the middle setting was 30/70, and the lowest was 15/85 froth and milk. I'd recommend the middle for a cappuccino and the lowest for a latte. If you just want hot milk, you might have to warm it elsewhere.

I started with one cup of milk in my jug and the machine heated it to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, which is far too hot for milk. It should be 158 degrees maximum. I could see it getting too hot and, when I touched the side of my jug, it was boiling. Drinking that would burn your mouth. If you add more milk to the jug, even if it's only one more cup, the machine is much more gentle. With two cups of milk the machine still heated the milk to 155 degrees, which isn't ideal. However, by the time I was frothing three cups, it was fine.

The steamer can get a little froth-happy, but once you've mastered the controls, you can make some really glossy milk. By the end of the tests, I'd adjusted my milk frothing, so that it was perfect every time. Surprisingly, the steam wand worked better with oat milk. It never overheated, even though the foam was a little more aerated and less tight. 

Once I added this milk to my coffee shot, it was well-balanced. The sweetness of the milk was a delicate contrast to the more acidic coffee that I had brewed. However, if you add milk that is too hot, you won't enjoy the same luxury.

At the end of the frothing, the best part of the steamer is that it self-cleans. You'll still need to wipe the nozzle, but it sprays water out of the end, so you'll never get sour milk clogging your wand.

Cold Brew

If you're a cold brew connoisseur, welcome to the fan club. I love a cold brew coffee, but I don't love a 24-hour brew time. Nespresso has dedicated cold brew pods, which range from watermelon cold brew to classic cold brew. I tried both pods and was delighted with the results. The cold brews were smooth, sweet, and had almost no acidity to them.

The watermelon was not for me, but with some mint, ice, and sparkling water, I wouldn't blame you if it was your drink of choice this summer. The original cold brew pods were really good. In three minutes, I had a glass full of classic cold brew without any of the cumbersome prep. If there was a reason for me to buy this machine, it would be this. 

Cleaning, Storage, and Maintenance

When you've finished with a pod, the machine automatically drops it into a pod bin. This has a capacity of eight pods, so you'll need to empty it quite often. The drip tray has a red marker, indicating when it's full. Again, after eight coffees, I needed to empty the drip tray. It's no surprise that the drip tray fills quickly because this is a relatively compact machine, which is always cleaning itself.

Whilst I love stainless steel, if you live in a hard water area, or tend to have grubby little hands in the kitchen, this professional marvel will look unkempt very easily. Always keep a microfiber cloth collection (like these microfiber cloths from Walmart) nearby, ready to polish this machine back to perfection.

The Creatista can run maintenance cycles and will alert you when you need to intervene. You won't need to do much, aside from polishing and the odd rinse cycle, to keep this running smoothly.

How does it rate online?

When I first tested this, there weren't many reviews out. Those that I could find were glowing, but I was intrigued to see how the feedback would look in the longer term. As it turns out, people only grew to love this even more.

Customers praise this for its appearance and intuitive functions. Even though it's expensive, lots of people say that they would buy it again. I found lots of customers who would never go back to cheaper models. It also feels like a high-quality coffee maker, so lots of people excitedly wrote about this being the last coffee maker they'll ever need to buy.

The people who weren't giving five-star reviews were those who preferred instant coffee to a $750 machine. It's bigger than other single-serve pod machines and a number of other reviewers noticed that it's high-maintenance to keep looking clean. These are all the criticisms I would expect for a bigger, more expensive machine, so there's nothing to worry about.

How does it compare?

Nespresso makes the best single-serve pod machines on the market, so if you don't want to spend $750, I would recommend looking at some of their cheaper models. The Vertuo Plus, which you can buy from QVC is a team favorite; a number of our expert testers have this model in their homes. At $180, it is a lot cheaper than the Creatista and is also much smaller. It doesn't have a milk frother, but you can buy the Aerroccino from Walmart and still save $500 compared to the Creatista. 

If you want an integrated milk frother the Latissima One is a better option. It's $400, so cheaper than the Creatista, but it's also bigger. It's compatible with the original pods rather than the Vertuo ones, so easier to fill. The design of each is very different, The Latissima has a simpler, minimalist look than the technical Creatista. Different décor will suit different models.

Should you buy it?

Ben and Jerry, Simon and Garfunkel, Homes & Gardens: there are a lot of iconic duos around. Nespresso and Breville are the newest and I think they're becoming one of my favorites too. It's easy to use, it looks the part, and it can make a good cup of coffee. The milk frothing takes some adjustment, but once you've got it, you'll be making perfect coffees in a matter of minutes. 

So, if you want a single-serve machine and you don't mind spending at the top end of the scale, you won't regret investing in the Creatista. However, if you aren't in the market for an $800 coffee maker, there are plenty of other options in our best coffee maker guide.

The consensus? That the Beckhams' aesthetic choices are hard not to love. 

Though it should come as no surprise considering the couple has showcased many of their beautiful spaces before via their social media, what is unexpected is how current the kitchen feels considering the substantial use of the color gray, which, many designers have been telling us, is a color that is going out of fashion. 

Gray kitchen ideas have been the go-to neutral staple of kitchen design for years, yet have been recently overshadowed by a whole host of colors replacing gray, especially warmer shades that feel more inviting and welcoming post-pandemic. Despite this, it is undeniable that the Beckhams haven't put a foot wrong in their kitchen design. Which leads to the question: what are its secret ingredients?

Like their London kitchen, their country kitchen looks to be designed by Italian kitchen specialists Officine Gullo. Unlike that more contemporary space, this kitchen marries a modern deep, dark gray with a more rustic backdrop. And that combination is key to its success.

'David Beckham’s kitchen works because the undertone reads as blue-black, almost midnight sky, rather than what comes to mind when you hear "gray cabinetry",' says interiors expert Charmaine Wynter. 'It’s a warm, rich, blue gray hue, and we all know colorful kitchen cabinetry is en vogue.

'Schematically, the kitchen inspires because of the mixture of materials and textures that we see in the entire space. We’ll start with the floors: 12in x 24in honed travertine stone is always appreciated, as is a wood-cladded ceiling with exposed joists. 

'All of these make for a very warm and inviting personalized aesthetic, which is something that we’re seeing in design as a strong directional style for 2024. 

'Add in the wall of windows, a brick fireplace/pizza oven and hanging copper pots with round wooden cutting boards adorning the walls and the result is a kitchen that is oh so très chic!'

The room's success is largely down to its combination of a rustic farmhouse kitchen aesthetic, its sleek modern functionality and the more modern features, such as the use of the contemporary dark gray color used on one side of the kitchen, which helps keep the room light and bright. 

This deep gray is also featured on the wooden cabinet, and the legs of the kitchen island, accented on the top of the wooden ceiling fans and matched to the bowls David and Harper use to cook with. But it's the use natural materials and texture in the room that makes it feel inviting.

The mingling of traditional and contemporary elements creates a harmonious balance that instills both charm and functionality into the space. 

'The color palette contributes significantly to the overall aesthetic: the rustic dark gray of the cupboards, complemented by the wooden beams and the golden touch of the handles, creates a uniquely inviting atmosphere.'

Moe Soloff, a kitchen specialist at Fabuwood adds: 'Beckhams' kitchen brilliantly epitomizes modern farmhouse style, which is gaining significant popularity. This style represents a blend of old and new, creating a comfortable and warm atmosphere. The design excellently incorporates natural elements, reflecting a trend we are seeing in kitchen designs. The connection to the outdoors through the large windows brings a serene, relaxed vibe to the space.'

Stephanie Calderon, the owner and principal designer at Stephanie Calderon Interiors agrees: 'The kitchen boasts several noteworthy elements, such as exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood ceilings, stucco-textured walls, and natural stone countertops. These materials not only add texture and depth but also establish a connection with nature within the interior space. The careful choice of dark gray cabinets, accentuated by contrasting brass pulls, further enhances the overall aesthetic by seamlessly blending all the materials together.'

The subtle use of textures in the kitchen creates various points of interest that may not otherwise stand out at first glance, adding depth that heighten the contrasting gray and brown-red tones.

'Undeniably, the effectiveness of the gray is heightened by the various textures in the kitchen. The glossiness of the gold handles, the rough texture of the stone floors and brickwork, and the smooth, natural grain of the oak shelves all contribute to the overall sensory experience of the kitchen,' highlights Artem Kropovinsky, Principal Interior Designer and Founder at Arsight.

Features such as white veins in the kitchen counter and sink add layers to the otherwise monochrome color scheme. 

'When surrounded by classic materials like natural stone and wood, gray colors look more like heritage design than a fading trend. The deep, almost charcoal gray of the Beckhams' cabinetry is timeless and classy. There's hardly a hint of white, suggesting boldness of leaning into a moody, saturated space,' says Ksenya Malina is the Founder and Principal at Time and Place Interiors.

'Juxtaposing the gray cabinetry against unexpected ultra-contemporary finishes like the veined black marble countertop revives the gray color, bringing modern nuance to a "safe", transitional style.

'The combination of gray cabinets with wood shelving and white tiles has become an expected, conventional look for kitchen design. But what gives a gray kitchen originality are authentic architectural and design features: a beamed ceiling of reclaimed wood, a stone pizza oven, a cluster of copper pots, a vintage runner rug, and rustic stone decorative vessels on a countertop. These details lend personalized character to a kitchen of any color – even one in the ever popular gray.'

The hanging copper pans capture the more casual, bustling nature of the farmhouse appeal, which are are gently contrasted by the use of the gray modern kitchen cabinets. This kitchen is a masterclass in design.

How can I make dark gray work in my kitchen?

The blue-gray used by the Beckhams is undeniably warmer than both the cooler, lighter, more overused grays designers have fallen out of love with, and it is a rather more interesting and stylish choice than black. 

And while this gray is a fantastic neutral, it does much more than just blend into the background. Ninja has become a household name for making some of the best air fryers on the market – and their first outdoor air fryer is no different. The Woodfire passed our tests with flying colors. Essentially, it's a portable electric grill with seven different functions, including air frying, roasting, baking, dehydrating, and broiling. The standout feature, however, is the smoker – which uses mini wood pellets to infuse dishes with a delicious, smoky flavor.

To test the best grills on the market, we look for exceptional cooking performance and taste. One of our testers, Alex, who is based in Texas, smoked various cuts of meat, grilled salmon, dehydrated beef jerky and even used the baking function to make cinnamon rolls. She used the grill over a few weeks, culminating in a show-stopping pork tenderloin for her guests on New Year's Day.

As a trained chef and kitchen appliances editor, I also tested this grill in my small backyard and focussed on vegetarian side dishes, like grilled fruits and vegetables, air-crisped fries and halloumi cheese. During the taste tests, we looked for perfectly crispy fries (like we've seen in the best air fryers), tender juicy meat, and that iconic smoky BBQ flavor you'd expect from traditional grills.

Unboxing and setup

The Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill is delivered in a medium-sized box. At 30 lbs, it requires some strength to move around. Thankfully, two handles are included in the box. You just need to screw them onto the grill, then it's easier to carry the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill between your home, garage and outdoor grilling space.

Beyond the grill itself, the box contains a grill plate, an air crisper basket, grease pan, recipe booklet, two different pellet bags – an All Purpose Blend and a Robust Blend – and a scooper to measure the pellets.

The included recipe booklet really stood out to me. I've tested many kitchen products that have disappointed me with unhelpful manuals, but Ninja's booklet is packed with inspirational recipes for grilled meats, fish, vegetables, BBQ sauces, and spice rubs. The grill chart was particularly impressive, offering a quick guide to cooking temperatures and flipping guidelines for tons of fresh and frozen ingredients. I'm sure it will be confidence-boosting for beginners.

The Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill uses 1760 watts of power, so it can only be plugged into a 15-amp circuit breaker. Alex tried plugging the grill into the same outlet as her hot tub and it tripped the breaker. She says, 'If I’d read the instructions more clearly, I would have noticed that Ninja suggests that this grill is the only appliance plugged into an outlet at a time. Be mindful of this before you buy, as you wouldn’t want the breaker to trip when you’re halfway through cooking.'

I also struggled with the short cable provided in the box. It's about 4ft long, so I needed to buy a heavy-duty, outdoor extension cord to make it work with my backyard setup. But once you're connected, it's easy to slot in the grill plate, grease tray and get grilling with the flick of a switch.

Cooking Performance

Test 1: Grilling and roasting

Alex says, 'For my first run with the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill, I decided to grill salmon and yellow squash. I wanted to add some smoky flavor, so I filled up the smoke box with a scoop of the All Purpose Blend pellets. You don’t have to measure the pellets out; the provided scoop is the exact dimensions of the smoke box and there's almost exactly enough for every function.'

'After filling the smoke box, I simply turned the dial to 'Grill' and hit the Woodfire Flavor button. According to Ninja's Recipe Book, I needed to set the temperature to high and the time to 10 minutes. While the grill preheated, I prepared the food. After about ten minutes, the screen read, 'Add Food.' Very quick and intuitive. I could already see smoke billowing around the grill and it smelled fantastic.'

'Even though I set the salmon and squash to cook for ten minutes, I ended up removing the food after seven minutes. It cooked incredibly fast. In fact, I wish I had only set the food to cook for five minutes because the fish was slightly drier on the outside than I preferred. Despite that, the fish was incredibly tasty and moister inside than I expected. There was a delicious smoky flavor to the fish and vegetables that wasn’t overwhelming. The char created by the grill grate was incredible.'

You don't have to use the woodfire pellets with the Ninja grill. I left the smoky meats to Alex, while I experimented with some side dishes to test the grill's versatility. I tried grilling cheeses and peaches without the pellets, and they turned out delicious. I was looking for perfect char lines and gentle caramelization on the peaches, which you can see below.

Test 2: Air Frying

This is the first outdoor air fryer/grill of its kind, so I couldn't wait to try the crisper basket and air fry setting. I tested it with a classic side of frozen French fries. Once the timer reached the halfway point, it told me to flip or shake the food. While I appreciate this intuitiveness in Ninja's best air fryers, I actually preferred checking on the food myself, as this grill cooks much faster than the suggested times. I found that after just ten minutes, my fries were already crispy and evenly cooked.

It's also worth noting that you can't air fry and grill at the same time, so you'll need to stagger ingredients if you're planning to make a meal which combines different cooking techniques.

Test 3: Broiling and baking

Alex broiled some leftover takeaway pizza and baked some delicious-looking cinnamon rolls. She says, 'It was incredibly easy, especially since I didn’t use Woodfire Technology to do so (I don’t think that would have been tasty!) Just as with most of the other cooking functions, the cinnamon rolls cooked a lot faster than I expected, so I’m glad that I checked on them throughout the baking process.'

Test 4: Smoking and Dehydrating

On New Year’s Day, Alex smoked a 1.5lb pork tenderloin. She says, 'The recipe book said it would take 45 minutes to smoke to an internal temperature of 145 degrees. It took about 40 minutes instead, and the result was fantastic. The exterior of the pork loin had caramelized, and the inside was exceptionally juicy. I shared some of the tenderloin with a neighbor who doesn’t usually like eating pork and they said it was the best tenderloin they’ve ever had.'

'I should add that the Woodfire Technology doesn't taste quite like a traditional smoker. There is a marked difference, and fans of hours-long smoked barbecue on traditional smokers shouldn't expect Ninja’s Woodfire Technology to be the same. It’s definitely not, but the Ninja still produces unbelievably tasty meals that are juicy, smoky, and fall-off-the-bone. With this grill, you can enjoy a similar taste without as much time and effort as doing it the old-fashioned way.'

'After this success, I tried to dehydrate round steaks into beef jerky. According to the dehydrate chart in the back of the Ninja recipe guide, beef jerky should take 5-7 hours of dehydrating time in the Woodfire Outdoor Grill. However, it only took two hours for the round steak to become beef jerky, and it tasted so good thanks to the Woodfire Technology. Once the beef jerky was done, I ate it all in one sitting!'

Capacity

The Ninja Woodfire Grill has a family-sized capacity, allowing you to create an entire meal in one go. There's enough room to roast a medium-sized whole chicken and place veggies around it. For grilling, it can accommodate up to four steaks or salmon fillets at a time, with some asparagus on the side too.

It's important to note that you can't air fry your carbs at the same time. A good strategy is to grill your meat first, let it rest, and then use the air fry function for French fries or potato wedges.

For those needing more capacity, Ninja have now released the Woodfire Pro Connect Premium XL model. This larger model provides even more space for cooking. It can grill ten burgers at a time, making it more suitable for bigger families or gatherings.

Extra Features

The standard version of the Woodfire Grill is missing a few features. Unfortunately, the version that we tested did not have a built-in thermometer which would have been incredibly helpful during the cooking process.

The XL Pro Connect model (David Beckham's preference) includes two built-in thermometers, Bluetooth and cooking notifications via the Ninja app, so you can sit back and enjoy the cookout. For those who love smart features, this pro version is a great upgrade, while the standard grill remains a solid, budget-friendly choice.

Cleaning

It’s not particularly difficult to clean the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill, but it takes a bit of time. Once the grill has cooled down, you must remove the grill grate, crisper basket, and grease tray and wash them by hand. Only the pellet scoop is dishwasher safe. If you have a good-sized sink and washing-up brush, you shouldn’t have a problem cleaning. The removable parts are made from non-stick ceramic coating, so food residue easily slides off and actually, hand-washing is a great way to make your air frying appliances last longer.

To make cleaning the grease tray easier, Ninja suggests covering it with aluminum foil, which allows you to throw away the greasy foil and prevents the tray from being too greasy. The smoke box doesn’t need to be cleaned, but you will have to dump ashes that may still be inside.

I'd also suggest that you clean the inside of the hood with a damp rag each time you’re done cooking, or else grease will build up over time. This is the case with the smoke box – grease has made its way into there and causes the lid to stick a little. Unfortunately, this is such a tight space that it’s very hard to clean with a damp rag. Perhaps an old toothbrush would be a better option.

Design, storage and durability

Although the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill is constructed with high-quality materials designed for year-round outdoor cooking, it’s best not to leave it exposed to the elements. The grill’s compact size makes it convenient to store in a garage or large cupboard when not in use.

For those who prefer to keep it outdoors, investing in the grill cover offered by Ninja is a wise choice. The cover enhances the grill's durability by protecting it from weather conditions, helping to maintain its condition and performance over time.

On the Ninja website, the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill has a 4.7-star rating out of 450 reviews. However, it should be noted that the reviews combine those of the grill I tested and the premium Ninja Woodfire Pro Outdoor Grill with Built-in Thermometer and Premium Package. The grills differ only slightly in that the Pro Outdoor Grill has a built-in thermometer and includes additional accessories like a grill cover, veggie tray, and roasting lifters.

On Amazon.com, the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill has a 4.7-star rating among 1,362 ratings and is the number one best-seller in Outdoor Grills.

Most reviewers loved this grill. They raved about its portability, how easy it is to clean, and the smoking features. I saw many reviews saying it makes a perfect gift for keen outdoor cooks. The only negative feedback came from those who seem to have a lot of experience with smoking on large traditional smokers. They weren’t always satisfied with the smoky flavor that this grill produces and had some trouble figuring out how to do multi-hour smokes of meat. These comments were very few, but they should be mentioned because it showcases how avid smokers might be too used to smoking the traditional way to like the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill.

If you ask me, I think that this grill and smoker is better designed for beginners or those who want a smoky flavor without the multi-hour-long experience of a traditional smoker.
