Instead, we saw an opportunity to create an intimate seating area that offers a different way to enjoy the living room.'

'The mirror reflects light and adds depth, while the banquette and table make it the perfect spot for coffee, conversation, or an evening cocktail. Carved out of the larger space, the nook feels like its own little destination – cozy and inviting, with a personality and purpose all its own, yet still connected to the rest of the room.'

2. Tiny Tables

Mini stools, side tables, and ottomans may feel like they all serve the same purpose, but for the latest living furniture trends in hardworking living rooms, each puts in the work. From a spot to rest your drink to a place to prop your feet after a long day, these charming pieces aren't just practical; they create a layered, lived-in feel in our living spaces.

'I love a room that feels like the furniture has been collected rather than purchased as a matching set,' explains designer Hollie Velten of SPACES by Hollie Velten. 'Little stools and ottomans are a great way to play with scale, shape, and personality without adding another big piece of furniture. I especially love the relationship between the smaller pieces and the larger upholstered furniture. Something is so charming about these little characters gathered around a room, and they make the space feel a bit more relaxed and less formally arranged.'

'I love the idea of a room having a few unexpected little moments rather than everything being perfectly scaled and coordinated. A tiny stool beside an oversized chair, or a funny little ottoman tucked into a corner, can bring so much more life to a space than another conventional side table,' Hollie adds.

3. Mixing Eras

'The key is layering,' advises Lauren Sullivan, Founder & Curator of Well x Design and Well Found. Contrast is what makes older pieces feel relevant.'

She continues, 'I like to think about form and integrity first – not just patina or age. A beautifully proportioned antique next to a modern light fixture or contemporary art instantly feels current. Vintage decorating works best when it feels collected over time rather than recreated from a single moment in history. The goal isn’t to replicate the past –it’s to let it inform the present in a way that feels intentional and alive.'

4. Warm, Saturated Neutrals

Neutrals may have taken a backseat in recent years, but as we crave comfortable, liveable spaces that last beyond fleeting trends, they're making a welcome return to living rooms in 2027.

While sometimes a room needs a good white paint for balance and airiness, we don't mean we're going back to the era of all-white rooms lacking soul. This year, we're embracing warm neutrals from every end of the spectrum; think burnt rusts, deep coffee browns, and orange-infused ambers that balance warmth and richness.

'Echoes of the 1970s continue to be seen in the latest color trends,' says Helen Shaw, Director of Marketing (International) at Benjamin Moore. 'Earthy oranges, terracottas and amber hues recall retro interiors, sun-faded fabrics, and the golden glow of vintage photography. When paired with grounded greens, bark browns and deep reds, these tones feel enveloping, mood-lifting and timelessly stylish – a contemporary revival of an iconic era.'

5. Jacquard & Tapestry Fabrics

From tapestry decor to jacquard upholstery, time-worn, embroidered fabrics bring warmth and richness to living rooms. Beautiful beside neutral tones and organic materials, these artisanal fabrics are loved for their rich texture and historic feel.

'I think jacquards add a depth to a room as an alternative to a true solid,' says interior designer Dafna Kikuchi, founder of Daf & Co. 'I think people are craving more soulful interiors and jacquard can lend more of a storied feel to a space without being stuffy.'

'We started with the English roll arm sofa that the client actually already owned (pictured above). When I got my hands on it, the shape was classic, but the fabric was a white performance linen. We agreed to reuse the sofa but to recover it in one of my favourite floral Decore Barbares fabrics.'

'From there, I continued to layer my infinite patterned fabrics and source a mix of vintage and modern shapes,' Dana explains. 'The client was very trusting but did request we add a solid, and that is how I positioned the beautiful olive green Soane jacquard. To me, a tonal jacquard acts like a more interesting cousin to a solid. It's not as loud as a pattern, but it doesn’t fade away either; it creates balance with all the other fabrics in the scheme.'

6. Fluid, Low-Slung Shapes

Low-slung, relaxed shapes make our living rooms feel laid-back, casual, and effortlessly cozy. Think curved-back chairs, low-level coffee tables, and modular sectionals.

'I think there’s a real appetite for interiors that feel comfortable and lived-in, rather than overly polished or formal,' interior designer Laura Stephens says. 'Lower furniture and softer, more relaxed shapes help create that feeling, making a room feel less rigid and more inviting. They can also be a lovely way to balance a more traditional property, as we have done here (above), with something contemporary and informal.'

'I also think lower furniture can bring a really interesting sense of proportion to a room,' Laura continues. A low coffee table creates a stronger horizontal line, which can help ground the seating area, while allowing the eye to travel across the room and appreciate the wider scheme. I particularly like the contrast between low, sculptural pieces and more traditional architectural details, as it stops a space from feeling too formal or predictable. It’s about balancing height, scale and silhouette to create a room that feels both considered and comfortable.'

'A low, informal coffee table works beautifully with this approach. It keeps the overall feel laid-back, allows the other pieces in the room to shine, and makes the seating area feel like somewhere you can really put your feet up and relax.'

7. Symmetry Is Back

The perfect living room layout depends on the size of your space and the pieces you have; however, if you choose one formula to follow this year, focus on creating as much symmetry as possible.

'Symmetry gives the eye a place to rest,' designer Sydney Jackson states. 'When you're taking in a room as a whole, your brain doesn't have to process two entirely different things if they're a matching pair. At the same time, using a pair of chairs, ottomans, or even lamps can give those pieces a stronger presence than they might have individually. I don't tend to design spaces that feel too pristine or perfectly composed. I love rooms that are layered, collected, and a little unexpected. But introducing moments of symmetry within that mix can be really grounding,' Sydney explains. 'It creates a sense of calm and intention that allows the more eclectic elements to shine.'

'There is already a lot going on visually in this room (above) from an architectural standpoint – the painted built-ins, exposed wood beams, and long row of windows – so I wanted the furniture arrangement to feel intentional rather than introduce more visual noise. A pair of matching chairs instantly brings a sense of order and restraint to the space. Even the contrasting sofa cushions echo that idea of a matching pair, creating a subtle sense of balance without everything feeling too coordinated.'

8. Color-Drenched Shelving

Color-drenched shelving is replacing boring white built-ins in living rooms for 2027 and beyond. From rooms wrapped in color to alcoves fitted with statement shelving, this colorful bookshelf trend invites playfulness to living room storage.

'Using color in shelving and joinery can really lift a space, and because open shelving is packed with books and objects, a really bright color is slightly diffused, and not as overpowering as simply painting a wall,' interior designer Rebecca Wakefield of Studio Fortnum says.

'A ‘feature wall’ can be quite a dated way to add color, so using it instead in joinery feels more contemporary and considered. Here, I used this color to punch through the more traditional colors and details in the house. I didn't want to completely color-drench the shelves, as it would have been too bold a statement in this home; instead, we used a palette of relatively ‘heritage’ colors like Farrow & Ball's Old White, which contrasted so well with the energetic orange and made the house feel alive and vibrant.'

They’re also an easy way to make an impact and can be used throughout the home, from the tree to garlands draped around fireplaces.'

From plaid-covered upholstery to equestrian-inspired artwork, living rooms radiated preppy Ralph Lauren nostalgia last year – and they're predicted to be embracing the heritage look once again for winter 2026.

'Christmas is as much about the feeling you create as the colors you choose; you don’t have to rely on red, green, and gold to make a space feel festive,' says Shailja.

'Layer these with seasonal greenery and warm lighting, adding touches of pink for an unexpected accent. The richness comes from the combination of color, texture, and light, rather than an abundance of overtly festive motifs.'

5. Rustic Country

The wicker Christmas trend invites handcrafted, characterful details into our homes. Tying into the rustic country aesthetic that makes use of past loved treasures and antique ornaments, this pared-back look embraces the best parts of country decorating. 'It’s relaxed and welcoming, and it suits almost any home, from a city flat to a farmhouse,' says Sarah Barclay, interior designer and Founder of The Dressed Tree. 'There’s a real charm to natural textures like wicker, jute and felt, and they bring a coziness that’s hard to achieve with glass baubles alone.'

'I think rustic country style will be the one to watch,' says Sarah. 'After a few years of very glossy, shop-bought-looking trees, people are craving something with more warmth and character. Handmade decorations feel personal and have a story behind them, which is really what Christmas is about.'

'Start with texture rather than color. I’d layer wicker stars and handmade felt animals with jute twine, a few pine cones and sprigs of foliage tucked deep into the branches. Keep the palette neutral, with creams, soft browns and deep greens, and add a touch of red for warmth. Warm white lights matter too, as they give that soft, firelit glow. The key is choosing pieces that work together as a collection, so it feels considered and cozy rather than cluttered.'

'They bring tension, and that’s what keeps a layered space from feeling too precious or too matchy,' says designer Heather French of French & French Interiors on unexpected color palettes like blue and red. 'Our core holiday pieces never change: inherited nutcrackers, antique Christmas pyramids, handmade glass ornaments. An unexpected color story lets us present them in a new way each year. Pairing pieces with story and staying power with something a little flashier makes the whole look feel collected and alive rather than static or overly traditional or overdone.'

Sissi Pohle and Patrick Scherzer of @tablesandfood, collect wicker baskets, decorative vessels, and ornaments year-round. Last year, they used pieces from their rattan collection to create a show-stopping, folk-inspired Christmas tree. 'Our aim is to be able to use items and objects throughout the year, not just during a specific season,' explain Sissi and Pat. 'Our large collection of rattan and wicker items is used constantly and everywhere. Last year, we even used them on the Christmas tree. From tiny dollhouse furnishings to large, imposing objects – every item has found its place on the real pine tree we bought from a farmer in a nearby village.'

'To be honest, we had no idea that it would become a trend for this year since we have been collecting wicker objects and baskets for a very long time,' Sissi and Pat continue. 'We pay close attention to the colors and condition of each object. Unusual designs, such as vases shaped with handles, are extremely rare. So it’s possible that, just like we did recently at a flea market in northern Italy, we’ll end up transporting a giant vase tucked under our arm on our old scooter. Wicker pieces are versatile and complement almost any interior design style.'

'Wicker baskets have always been, and continue to be, practical items for everyday use,' they add. 'They were traditionally used in agriculture, for example, to gather fruits and vegetables. You can recognize a high-quality basket by its materials – it should be made exclusively from natural materials and reinforced, for example, with pre-carved wood.'

Reminiscent of fallen branches, these collectible vintage holiday decorations bring a natural, organic feel to Christmas trees, mantels, and tabletops, blending perfectly with fresh foliage, dried orange garlands, and winter berries.

'I think they add that lovely natural texture and couple with Christmas glitz, it’s a match made in heaven!', says Jessica Daines. 'I think they lend themselves to so many different interior styles from contemporary to traditional. They are so easy to style and look good anywhere!'

So, while most people extend or relocate the kitchen in an older property, the owners of this Georgian-Revival home kept the original location and footprint.

Inspired by the architecture and traditional features, the designers have completely transformed the kitchen into a high-functioning yet effortlessly stylish space, filled with thoughtful details and custom features. It proves you don't need much space to create a standout design.

Totally Tile Kitchen Walls for Traditional Function

Historically, kitchen walls were tiled from floor to ceiling for a truly functional space – and it's now become an unexpected way to give these surfaces interest and dimension.

It's a design decision that instantly creates a more textured finish in this kitchen. 'We were inspired by the exterior of the building as we reimagined the kitchen. The Georgian Revival brick facade has a lot of Roman arches, which we echoed in the tiled arched openings throughout the kitchen,' says Mira Eng-Goetz, Lead Designer at Jessica Helgerson Interior Design.

The tiles could have stopped at the arches, but it felt more in keeping with the home's architecture to extend them far beyond. 'Kitchens in stately homes have traditionally been tiled from floor to ceiling for good reason. They’re workrooms that get messy, so they need durable, cleanable surfaces. The handmade ceramic wall tiles we chose are flat, smooth, and glossy – perfect for wiping down. The deckled edges and crazed cream-colored glaze give the tiled walls character and warmth.'

Play With Open Storage Styles for a Lived-In Look

There's always a lot of debate around how much open kitchen storage you should have, but the best designs cater to how the homeowner really uses their space. And for this client, a chef who likes to see and easily access everything she needs, a larger proportion of open storage became the more practical choice. But it also became a design feature, with much of the storage doubling as decorative details.

The open shelving adds a collected feel, while brass rails create a subtle elegance. 'Our client has an extensive collection of kitchen tools that she likes to access from a rail and hook system. In front of the windows, she hangs all sorts of items such as tea strainers, scissors, drying herbs, spools of baker’s twine – objects that are both functional and joyful to look at,' Mira explains.

The focus on open storage meant she had to get creative with the large appliances. 'The standout feature is the 48” wide panel-ready Sub-Zero refrigerator, which sits quietly behind mirrored doors in the short hall between the kitchen and the breakfast room,' she adds. 'It was such a challenge figuring out how to fit this fridge into such a modest kitchen layout, and the solution required a lot of creativity. It’s always rewarding when we think outside the box and land on a solution that brings unexpected delight.'

Design a Kitchen Island Appropriate for the Room's Scale

It's not unusual for a kitchen island to be left out in smaller spaces. But for a chef who prefers a dedicated work zone close to storage, appliances, and the sink, a freestanding island was essential. And to create a proportionate design that still allowed plenty of walk space, a narrower island was chosen, which not only maximized the small space, but also added a traditional detail that felt perfect for the home.

'The kitchen’s footprint is quite narrow (limited by an existing staircase that we opted to keep). We asked our client to cook in the kitchen for a few weeks before deciding if she wanted an island. In this way, she could decide if her workflow would be helped or hindered by a piece of furniture in the middle of the room,' Mira recalls. 'After just a few days, it became clear that a narrow island was the right solution. The island is a custom piece by Egg Collective with a travertine top.'

Use Kitchen Flooring to Add Interest and Historic Style

A white kitchen requires some contrast to feel warm and lived-in. Rather than relying on tonal variations to do the heavy lifting, Mira introduced patterned flooring to really bring the space to life. 'There’s an original checkered marble floor in the opposite wing of the house. Choosing a checkerboard floor for the kitchen created balance and continuity,' she explains.

Instead of using large-scale tile, smaller square tiles in groups of four were used. This not only adds more texture to the floor, but it instantly feels more traditional. It's a small detail, but it ensures the kitchen floor feels just as considered, not only as part of the kitchen, but as part of the historic architecture that gives the entire home charm.

Choose Kitchen Sink Materials to Soften a Small Space

A kitchen filled with tile can easily feel cold and hard, but softer details in this design ensure it remains warm and inviting. Beyond the natural wood details, the kitchen sink brings abundant texture and softness to the scheme, from the fluted detail to the sink skirt below.

'The sink is a custom concrete sink that matches the width of the window it’s under,' Mira explains. 'We added fluting to the front because this is a classic detail found in apron-front farm-style sink basins. We opted for a skirt below because it allows us to add a textile to a room without curtains. It’s important to juxtapose so many hard surfaces with a soft, tactile fabric.'

While grand Louis XV bergères and crystal chandeliers will always fetch a premium, there are plenty of smaller, affordable pieces which, if used in the right way, can look just as beautiful in the right setting. In fact, it’s the humble pieces which show imperfections and the marks of age and craftsmanship that interior designers are increasingly drawn to. Items like earthenware confit pots, linen grain sacks, and wooden stools boast rustic charm and an aged patina that can add instant character and richness to an interior without costing a fortune.

‘For me, it’s about creating interiors that feel collected rather than decorated. These pieces don’t need to be grand or particularly valuable; it’s their character, craftsmanship, and the stories they carry that make them special,’ explains interior designer Sean Symington.

To discover which unassuming French finds interior designers love to hunt down, we asked the experts for their insights and tips on decorating with antiques.

1. Earthenware Confit Pots and Bowls

Before the days of refrigeration, confit pots were used to preserve cooked meats. To keep the contents from spoiling, the meat would be covered in fat, and sometimes the pots would be submerged in the earth to keep cool. Today these jars are coveted by interior designers for their rustic clay patina and characteristic ochre glaze and are go-to pieces for channeling French country style.

‘They’re wonderfully unpretentious, with a sense of history and a patina that only comes with age. I often use pieces like these to bring warmth and texture to a space, whether styled on open shelving, layered on a kitchen worktop or simply left out to be used every day,’ explains interior designer Sean Symington.

Confit pots and dairy bowls make wonderful decorative pieces, but can also be used as vases and fruit bowls. Their history makes them particularly suited to French country kitchens, but their large size also makes them great pieces for styling entryway console tables. They make a fabulous focal point simply styled with a few seasonal branches. ‘I would style these pieces on open kitchen shelves, grouped on an island, or a mantelpiece alongside framed artwork, small oil paintings, stacks of old books, or next to lovely florals. Their earthy, timeworn finish works beautifully against painted cabinetry, stone, and warm wood,’ adds Sean.

Earthenware and terracotta pieces are a common sight at French brocantes and flea markets, but online dealers always carry a large stock, including specialists in French antiques, Chez Pluie.

2. Antique Linens

Antique textiles are a staple at any brocante fair. From starched linen sheets and rustic grain sacks to French lace and monogrammed damask linen napkins. For Benji Lewis, an interior designer and seasoned brocante shopper who lives between the UK and France, they’re always something he keeps an eye out for, whatever country you are shopping in.

‘I always look for the ones with embroidered letters on them, likely having formed part of a bride's wedding trousseau,’ he explains. ‘I've yet to find one with BL on it, but I buy them anyway, and use them as sheets, curtains and tablecloths.’

For lovers of the romantic French look, French Garden House has a wide selection of antique textiles, including embroidered tablecloths and monogrammed pillow shams.

3. Vintage Grain Sacks

Vintage grain sacks woven from heavy-duty fibers, including hemp, flax, and linen, are particularly sought after by designers for the rustic texture created by their coarse, nubby weave. As the name suggests, they were originally used to store grain and were often woven on farms. Many feature signature red or blue stripes, which served as a form of barcode to indicate both the grain and the farm it came from.

Their beautiful organic texture instantly lifts an interior, and they are popular sewn up into cushions, but they can also make great curtains, too, as demonstrated in Benji's rustic French country kitchen.

'I chose grain sacks rather than a fine cotton for these curtains because the coarse hemp texture dovetailed perfectly with the rustic feel of my kitchen and the other materials I have in there, including reclaimed terracotta, oak and stone,' explains Benji. 'Grain sacks only come in certain widths, so when I used them as curtains to conceal things in the storage unit in my French kitchen, I had them stitched together so they didn’t hang as separate panels.'

4. Savoie Pottery

Savoie pottery – traditional, hand-crafted folk earthenware from the Savoie and Haute-Savoie regions of the French Alps – is a style that Susannah Cameron, antiques dealer and founder of the French antiques store Chez Pluie, is seeing grow in popularity. While historically it may have been fine Limoges porcelain which was held in esteem, now Savoyard earthenware is captivating interior designers with its naive, handcrafted charm.

‘I adore their earthy glazes: ochre, chocolate brown and buttery yellow, decorated with delightful dots, zigzags, flowers and geometric patterns. For me, they capture French country charm, especially when they don’t quite match. Building a collection gradually, one lovely find at a time, is such a pleasure,’ explains Susannah.

‘Creamers and pitchers reflect the dairy traditions of the French Alps, alongside decorated plates, dishes and cutlery strainers. Many date from the early twentieth century, with wear to the glaze from years of daily use. For me, that is part of their appeal, and these everyday pieces can still be wonderfully affordable.'

When hunting for Savoie pottery, ask the dealer about its origins to ensure it’s genuine. ‘I also look underneath for wire-cut marks from the potter’s wheel, an interesting detail about how it was made,’ adds Susannah. 5. Mercantile Objects

Items that once graced the old shops of France, or are associated with a trade, have wonderful character and narrative. From apothecary jars and old signs to wine hoods and coffee tins, items that tell a story of days gone by inject romance into interiors and make a great talking point. Often these items feature beautiful, decorative typography that dealers and interior designers particularly love.

‘Old shop and café objects really spark my imagination. A glass apothecary jar makes me picture a pharmacist measuring ingredients, while a branded match striker conjures up a café table and the customers gathered around it,’ explains Susannah. ‘I also love old signs, with their French lettering, hand-painted details and advertisements for everyday things. They were made to catch the eye, and they still do.’

Choosing pieces that relate to the space in which they are displayed can make a particularly fun talking point, for example, a fromagerie sign in a kitchen or old hat boxes piled in a dressing room. ‘Display apothecary jars together so their shapes and labels can be appreciated, or tuck a little match striker among books. A French sign looks wonderful above kitchen shelving or a desk, where its lettering brings another layer of interest,’ suggests Susannah.

Often sterile and cold, bathrooms are great spaces to introduce antiques, as their character helps bring a collected, lived-in feel. Here Guy Goodfellow has styled alcove shelves with a collection of old pharmacy jars. ‘The old pharmacy jars were found at a flea market just outside Paris. They are precisely the sort of things I love bringing into an interior: objects gathered over time, with memory and character, that make a room feel personal and slightly imperfect rather than pristine.'

When searching for mercantile pieces, 'look beyond the French wording for a town, business name or address,' advises Susannah. 'Check the bottom and sides of enamel signs for discreet manufacturers’ details. These little inscriptions can help you trace a piece’s origins, and a knowledgeable dealer should be able to tell you more.'

6. Antique Artwork

Characterful French oil paintings from the 20th century depicting rural scenes and still life are becoming increasingly popular with interior designers. Contrary to what you might think, the name of the artist doesn't matter here – it's the composition, subject matter, color and style that really appeal to designers. Often a weathered frame plays an integral part in the desirability of the piece.

'One favorite is a still life dated 1923, with a blue-decorated French pitcher surrounded by vegetables and a wedge of pumpkin. The everyday subjects, rich colors, and gathered folds of blue cloth make it so appealing. It’s exactly the sort of painting I love for a kitchen. I’m very happy to find them unframed, with slightly frayed edges or an old repair,' explains Susannah.

For a relaxed feel, rest them on shelves among other decorative items. Choosing an array of sizes and mixing framed with unframed adds to an eclectic feel perfect for a rustic farmhouse interior. 'Prop small paintings at the back of a shelf, with books or pottery in front. Larger works look beautiful alone or as part of a gallery wall,' adds Susannah.

Artworks that complement the purpose of the room make great conversation pieces. For example, food paintings such as this French oil painting of grapes at Etsy would sit beautifully in the kitchen, while a graceful nude makes a fitting piece for a bathroom, and of course, you can't go wrong with a floral study to bring a timeless feel to any space. 'I particularly love a kitchen still life whose subjects echo what’s happening around it: a painted pitcher alongside real pottery creates a lovely connection,' adds Susannah.

When shopping for paintings, it's all about what speaks to you, but look for signatures, dates, labels, or inscriptions on the reverse if you're trying to establish whether a piece is authentically French. 'The subject can offer clues too: a familiar village, traditional cookware, or a recognizable French pitcher. I use these clues to guide my questions about where the painting was found and what is known of its history,' explains Susannah.

7. Copperware

While gilt mirrors and sconces inevitably nod to French grandeur, vintage copperware is a great way to bring a little bit of French luster into the home without the price tag, and we’re seeing it crop up time and time again in interior designers' beautiful kitchen projects.

‘Antique copper has always been a bestseller for us. Nothing says French country kitchen quite like copper pans hanging from hooks, although they look just as good in a modern kitchen,’ explains Susannah. ‘For me, the details are a big part of the appeal: chunky brass or iron handles, bulbous rivets and the lovely shapes of old cake and jelly molds. Even a single piece brings warmth to a room. Villedieu-les-Poêles in Normandy has been making copperware since the Middle Ages. Mauviel started there in 1830, and coppersmiths still work in the town today, making and repairing the pots and pans that have made it famous.’

Whether you’re looking for something ornate and decorative, or simple and sculptural, Chez Pluie has a wonderfully curated selection from sauté pans and cauldrons to the more unusual and quirky winemaker’s watering cans.

Copperware's enduring appeal is its warm, varied patina, which brings character to any space. Sometimes pieces will have scattered verdigris or oxidation, particularly around the joins, which adds a lovely hint of texture and color. Often the solder work is visible, which adds to the storied history of the piece. It’s these textures and marks of craftsmanship that interior designers are particularly drawn to.

While these pieces are mainly used for decoration, they can be functional, too. ‘Copper is also wonderful to cook with because it conducts heat so well. Older tin-lined pans may need professional re-tinning before use, but it’s worth the effort to get them back into the kitchen,’ adds Susannah.

You can even get creative and repurpose copperware, as antiques dealer Lily Barfield demonstrates here at The Marlene Hotel. 'Old copper vessels are often plentiful at French flea markets. The larger pots can serve as wine buckets and make a statement on your bar. Just make sure to find a vessel with a flat bottom so it doesn't tip over on your counter. When not in use as a wine bucket, it can double as an indoor planter. A pop of green looks striking against the shiny copper. I find myself using these copper vessels over and over; they are always more useful than I originally imagined,' explains Lily.

8. Small Wooden Stools

Decorative and practical, rustic wooden stools are often snapped up by interior designers at flea markets and brocantes. Whether used to pile towels in a bathroom, as a handy step to reach high pantry shelves, or as a little side table in a living room, these humble pieces are extremely versatile. Primitive three-legged milking stools can often command high prices, as can the Charlotte Perriand “Berger” (Tabouret Berger) stool designed between 1953 and 1961, but there are plenty of weathered vintage pieces available for less.

Benji Lewis picked up these wooden stools from a French brocante. 'The pair of stools are made from solid rough-hewn oak, so fine they are not, but that is why I like them here. It was one of those cases of seeing something at a glance and thinking they were dreadful and then having another look and realizing they were perfect,' remembers Benji Lewis.

'⁠I was focused on an authentic period French country house aesthetic when I designed the room, and rustic textures are integral to achieving that, which is why the fact of the stools not having been finely carved works well. ⁠I don’t know how old they are; I would imagine 1920s and possibly made for the kitchen of a hunting lodge.'

Don't be put off by weathered texture or chipped paint, as this often adds to the charm; however, take care to check over any wooden pieces for signs of woodworm. It's also important that the stool is sturdy if it's intended to be functional. The beauty of the French country aesthetic is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to capture the look – just a few well-chosen pieces can go a long way. While large items like armoires and refectory tables command high prices, small items like unassuming vintage marmalade jars, 20th-century oil paintings, confit pots, marble mortars, enamel jugs, and embroidered linens are all French styling essentials that can be picked up from flea markets for relatively low prices.

‘Some of my favorite French antiques are the simplest pieces, objects originally made for everyday use. Old pottery, French Accolay ceramics, olive jars, rustic wooden stools, antique linen napkins, and garden urns all bring a wonderful sense of history and authenticity to a space,’ explains interior designer and antiques dealer Elizabeth Pash. ‘I love the imperfections, beautiful patina, and feeling that these pieces have lived another life.’

For balanced, timeless schemes, mix in French antiques with pieces from different styles and eras, say the experts. ‘I especially love mixing these humble finds with more refined furnishings. A weathered French urn or a beautifully shaped piece of pottery can be just as impactful as an important antique,’ adds Elizabeth. ‘It's that unexpected mix of old and new, rustic and elegant, that makes a room feel personal, collected, and timeless.’

And as the hub of hosting, ensuring your cooking space is ready for the seasonal preparations is key. For interior designers, that means removing a few items that make your kitchen feel chaotic and cluttered – the opposite of a calming hosting setup.

So whether you're hosting for the first time and need some trusted advice or simply need help to ensure your kitchen doesn't descend into chaos, here are the three things designers always remove from their kitchen before hosting, and what they replace them with instead.

1. Countertop Storage and Appliances

Those small countertop storage solutions and appliances that live out throughout the year are usually handy to have within reach, but when you're hosting, they create a more cluttered look and take up valuable surface space. Small appliances you are using can, of course, stay out, but everything else, like utensil crocks, should be removed.

'I love the ease of countertop utensil storage for everyday cooking, but a jar overflowing with cooking tools pulls the eye right to the stove. Moving it off the counter also frees up valuable space for setting out drinks, serving platters, and all the trimmings of a party. When you’re hosting, every inch of counter space counts,' explains interior designer Kathy Kuo.

'I’d get rid of the countertop clutter, especially items like utensil crocks, paper towel holders, and any small appliances,' adds interior designer Jennifer Hunter. 'When you’re hosting, the kitchen is already a hub of activity, and having every surface filled can make it feel chaotic before the party even begins. I’m a big believer that a kitchen should feel lived-in and layered, but there’s a difference between collected and cluttered.'

Once you've removed the small items and appliances that can easily read as clutter amid the hosting chaos, be intentional about what you add instead. For interior designers, it's usually one beautiful decor piece that elevates the kitchen without taking up lots of valuable surface space. 'I typically style a kitchen with a vintage bowl filled with seasonal fruit or a beautiful wooden cutting board leaned against the backsplash,' says Jennifer.

If you have space, decorative displays are equally beautiful. 'A good rule of thumb for hosting is that everything on the counter needs to add to the occasion. That could mean it’s functional or aesthetically pleasing, but it still needs a purpose,' Kathy advises. 'Tuck the everyday tools into a drawer and set out one beautiful vessel instead. A stoneware pitcher filled with fresh blooms or a few seasonal branches is always a welcome addition to the kitchen.'

2. Kitchen Island Clutter

If a kitchen island sits at the center of your space, it's probably the one place that requires the most attention. When you're hosting, it's the last place you want covered in clutter – it makes the whole room feel messier and hosting duties infinitely more difficult and disorganized.

'I recommend people remove all the clutter from their kitchen island when hosting to create a more calming environment. As we all now gather in the kitchen, I prefer to move the hosting setup to the perimeter when space allows,' says interior designer Shani Core.

Instead, utilize your perimeter countertops and create zones where hosting essentials naturally live in your kitchen for ease of access as well as a more visually harmonious space. 'In this kitchen, I used the area beneath a built-in China cabinet as a bar. Wine glasses sit atop a rattan tray, and an ice bucket is close by. A large vase with branches cut from the outside trees is all the kitchen island needs to welcome guests.'

3. Heavily Scented Candles

Hosting tips always include scent in one way or another, and a kitchen feels like the natural place to light a candle. But designers actually advise against any strong scents while you are cooking or while guests are dining.

'I love a candle, but a strong fragrance competes with the smell of the food and can even impact how dishes taste. Whenever you’re hosting, limit scented candles to bathrooms and living spaces separate from the food,' Kathy suggests. If you're set on scented candles, save them for after dinner, rather than before or during.

'Switch to unscented tapers in sculptural holders. You still get that warm, flickering glow that makes everyone want to linger, minus the aroma. Plus, tall tapers add varying heights to your kitchen display, which makes the whole spread look more dynamic and layered!'

Sometimes, it's the simplest swaps that make your kitchen a far calmer space for hosting. Consider the pieces in your kitchen that take up counter space or can easily read as clutter – they're usually the things that are best swapped out.

'This project is located in a picturesque neighborhood of Minneapolis filled with historic homes from the 1920s and 30s, which are typically quite manicured,' Anne tells Homes & Gardens. 'This specific client wanted to approach the project in a way that felt less expected for that area, and I was totally game to experiment.'

While white paint can read timeless, it can also feel a little 'new' in character-steeped homes that feature delicate original features. 'A white-on-white living room just wouldn't have done some of the home's architectural details justice,' she adds. 'This living room has beautiful windows and light coming in that we highlighted with a solid teal drapery from Holland & Sherry.'

Anne had the job of being considerate of the home's age, while also keeping things fresh and playful. 'We brought in furniture shapes that were interesting and unexpected, like the amorphic coffee table and cool scalloped day bed to bring in some modern touches. We were able to highlight and honor the architecture of the home, but have some fun through color and contrast.'

Timeless paint colors don't mean playing it safe. Rich and moody, the jewel-toned green paint (Troubadour from Portola Paints) stands out. It brings attention to the beautiful moldings without stealing the show and distracting you from the room's naturally bright, airy feel. Not to mention, deep forest greens evoke a real heritage feel.

For balance, Anne selected Farrow & Ball's beloved Wimborne White as the living room wall color. It brings just the right amount of contrast against the vintage layers, richly piled fabrics, and moody tones, and bridges the gap between past and present.

'My first interior design job was working for an historic paint colorist, where I learned so much about combinations that complement each other and evoke emotion, especially within an interior space,' Anne explains. 'I love working in jewel tones and we were able to create a harmonious space by bringing in the high-gloss evergreen on the painted moldings and fireplace surround, deep teal through the drapery and BDDW fabric on the lounge chairs, and the eggplant sofa in a way that feels modern yet timeless.'

Anne explains that, more than anything, doing something different was the primary goal. While there's nothing wrong with going down the authentic route, Anne chose a different approach, using color bravely and playfully to keep things lighthearted, personal, and, most importantly, current.

The goal was not to create a time capsule, but to create an eclectic interior that feels like a reinvention of the past. 'It was really about doing something unexpected, and these colors contrasting with the creamy white walls bring an element of conversation,' she adds. 'The touch of color on the moldings and fireplace surround allowed us to continue to bring in color and texture within the furnishings without feeling overdone or trend-driven.'

'For this home (pictured above), we wanted the spaces to feel lived-in and collected,' says interior designer Laura W. Jenkins. 'We also wanted to give a nod to traditional interiors but with a twist. In that vein, all the materials that we selected were more traditional in nature but used in a somewhat whimsical way. For example, I love mixing rattan into rooms, it adds a bit of informality to a formal space, giving some relief to the upholstery.'

'For these chairs, we loved the Soane Britain Venus chairs, which are so charming and hold such a great presence,' Laura adds. 'For the fireplace, the fender adds an element of tradition but also of function. Much as it would have in the past, it helps protect kids and pets from the fire and also provides a perch if one needs to sit by the fire to warm up. I think the fender is both friendly to form and function and a nod to tradition. They also add another layer of decoration. Clients who want a fender are leaning into the more collected and lived-in spaces, and this gives the perfect little nod to history.'

2. Side Tables, Stools and Ottomans

Living room side tables are more than a place to rest your drink, they transform an empty corner into a thoughtful vignette. From plush ottomans to rustic stools, the tiny table trend brings whimsy and charm to our living rooms.

'The Queen Anne architecture gave us a beautiful starting point, but this is also a home for a family with four children, so the drawing room needed to feel comfortable and adaptable,' explain Sophie Eadie and Fi Crole of Eadie & Crole. 'With relatively little floor space, each piece had to contribute without making the room feel crowded. The pair of stools brings balance to the seating arrangement without closing it off. Their open metal frames allow you to see through to the rug, giving them a visual lightness that two more armchairs would have lacked. The curved ironwork also introduces a lovely contrast to the generous upholstery and traditional detailing.'

'We like furniture that allows a room to adapt. The stools can be drawn into a conversation or moved aside when more floor space is needed. They give the room flexibility while still feeling like considered, decorative pieces. We think their appeal will continue into 2027 because they offer a more flexible way of furnishing a living room.'

3. 'Old-Fashioned' Upholstery

'Old-fashioned' details once deemed fussy or kitsch are back better than ever in 2027. Think pleats, frills, and plenty of upholstery fringing.

'This is our client’s music room (pictured above),' interior designer Uns Hobbs explains, 'and we designed a bespoke corner bench seat where they could sit and play guitar or gather with friends when hosting. We wanted it to be comfortable and sociable, but with a touch of glamour too. The fringing adds a bit of wow factor and makes the bench seat more of a focal point. We kept the rest of the room quite neutral so that the upholstery and its detailing could take center stage. It’s a relatively simple shape, but the fringe gives it personality.'

'They are making a comeback, and I’m using them a lot in my projects,' adds Uns. 'I’ve always loved that slightly granny chic style, and details like pleating, fringing and skirts bring softness and playfulness to a room. I think people are drawn to interiors that feel warm, comfortable and full of character. These traditional details have a lovely familiarity to them, but changing the fabric, color, or scale can make them feel fresh. A fringe or skirt is also a great way to turn a simple piece of furniture into something a little more special.'

4. Gingham

From delicate fine prints to loud, large-scale patterns, gingham injects playful personality into living rooms. Gingham isn't the only nostalgic pattern making a return to upholstery and soft furnishings; vintage florals and heritage-inspired paisley bring similar doses of character.

In the living room pictured above, the bold gingham armchairs bring just the right amount of contrast against the warmer tones, as well as clashing with the finer floral weave of the rug. 'This is a drawing room in a young family’s home in St John’s Wood,' says interior designer Emily Janak. 'A pair of gingham chairs was exactly what we needed to keep the room feeling fresh and not too serious. Gingham is everlasting because it’s classic while also being graphic. It can be a great alternative to a floral and it’s forgiving with stains.'

'Symmetry gives the eye a place to rest,' explains interior designer Sydney Jackson. 'When you're taking in a room as a whole, your brain doesn't have to process two entirely different things if they're a matching pair. At the same time, using a pair of chairs, ottomans, or even lamps can give those pieces a stronger presence than they might have individually.'

'I don't tend to design spaces that feel too pristine or perfectly composed,' Sydney explains. 'I love rooms that are layered, collected, and a little unexpected. But introducing moments of symmetry within that mix can be really grounding. It creates a sense of calm and intention that allows the more eclectic elements to shine.'

6. Jacquard Tapestry Fabrics

Tapestry and jacquard weaves might be centuries old, but these time-steeped techniques enrich living rooms with layers of warmth, texture, and history. 'I see how people have a much stronger desire for things that have a real sense of human craftsmanship to them, and I think jacquard has that vital sense of heritage that people are valuing more and more in their homes,' says interior designer Eliza Dewbury.

'I feel strongly that a tapestry or jacquard doesn't have to feel old-fashioned or belong exclusively in a traditional country house. If used with contemporary furniture pieces and more playful color combinations, it can feel incredibly fresh and exciting,' Eliza adds.

'We were particularly conscious of wanting the room (pictured above) to feel incredibly soft and inviting and knew we wanted a large central coffee table or ottoman to anchor the furniture,' she explains. 'Whilst we toyed with the idea of introducing the natural character and richness of a material like marble or wood, we felt that an upholstered ottoman would bring much more softness and comfort to the space.'

'This Pierre Frey tapestry jacquard felt like the perfect compromise. The nature-inspired motifs, earthy palette, and woven texture gave us the sense of organic richness that we were drawn to in natural stone or wood, but with all the warmth and softness of an upholstered piece.'

7. Slipper Chairs

Slipper chairs may have once been dismissed as old-fashioned, but they're bringing real elegance and grace to living rooms this year. Not to mention, they're a refreshing choice for schemes that want flexibility without the bulk of a sectional.

'We chose slipper chairs in this entertaining room (pictured above) for a few reasons,' explains Emily Smoor, founder of Fantoush. 'Space was at a premium and slipper chairs have a nice compact footprint and the open armless style allowed more light to flow through from the bay window behind them. The other reason is that they are a very social chair! Their open shape means there are no physical barriers between people. In a space that is designed for socializing rather than watching television, they are perfect for conversation.'

'A slipper chair can be a very stylish thing,' Emily adds. 'What is nice about them is that they bring a nod of classic upholstery to a project but without the arms that often define a chair as traditional. The slipper chair is that sweet spot between traditional and modern that works in all sorts of interiors. As people start to make more considered interior buying decisions, they may be looking for pieces that they know will work for the long haul and slipper chairs have an ageless appeal because they can work in so many styles and locations. A well-designed slipper chair can be surprisingly comfortable and has the benefit of creating more seating without overpowering a smaller space. It's a win-win.'

I’ve already decided that an artificial Christmas tree will be best for my small living room (the less mess, the better), and I’d prefer something mini – this way, it won’t overwhelm my already tight space. 'My bet is on Chocolate Plum (Pantone 19-1110), a smoky brown-black with a violet undertone,' says John Maloney McNamara of Coosa. 'It’s almost black, but stops just short, with depth and a little sexy mischief. To me, a move from Cloud Dancer, Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year, to Chocolate Plum would feel more like an evolution than a revolution. Rather than abandoning quieter, more nuanced colors, we’re simply seeing them deepen – becoming moodier, more complex, and a little less predictable. Chocolate Plum feels familiar yet unexpected, grounded yet glamorous, with the kind of versatility that makes a color interesting rather than merely easy to live with.'

When decorating with moody tones like Chocolate Plum, John suggests, 'I’d go all in rather than relegate it to an accent chair or a handful of decorative accessories. On walls, a deeply pigmented matte finish would allow the color to subtly shift between brown, charcoal, and violet as the light changes. Little Greene’s Purple Brown, Farrow & Ball’s Cola, and Sherwin-Williams’ Weathervane capture some of the depth and nuance I’m drawn to in this color.'

Grounding greens have dominated the Color of the Year round-up so far, so it's sensible to assume that Pantone's spotlight shade might follow suit, too.

'I’d love to see olive green as Pantone’s Color of the Year 2027,' says Diane Hemmersbaugh of Theo & Co. Design. 'Since 2026's Cloud Dancer white, I'm noticing a trend toward warmer, more inviting, organic interiors, and olive green would be a renewed focus on color! What makes olive special is its versatility throughout the home: it shines on walls, looks beautiful on cabinetry, and works well in fabrics for upholstery and window treatments. Whether or not we see it as 2027’s Color of the Year, olive green is a classic here to stay.'

'As a color drawn from nature, olive green provides a grounded feel to any space and pairs beautifully with different tones of wood, warm whites, and accent colors like dusty blue and terracotta. Using olive green as a focus or an accent shade is a way to bring color into a space in an understated way while adding warmth and depth.'

3. Eggplant

'If I were choosing two possibilities, I would put my money on an earthy moss green or a rich aubergine or eggplant,' says Blair Burton of Blair Burton Interiors. 'We've seen so much green and blue in interiors that I think there is room for a deeper, warmer color to emerge. Aubergine has some of the richness of brown and red, but it's more complex than either. It can feel historic without feeling old-fashioned, and dramatic without necessarily being loud.'

'Both colors also have something I think people increasingly want from their homes: depth. Neither is a particularly fleeting color, even if aubergine is perhaps more playful. To me, they both feel grounded and established,' she adds.

Paints like Farrow & Ball's Brinjal are perfect examples of these aubergine-inspired shades. 'In fact, I think these deeper colors often become easier to live with when you commit to them. Aubergine cabinetry can behave almost like a dark neutral while giving a room much more personality than gray or black.'

4. Soft Pink

Dusky pinks are perfect when neutrals don't provide enough punch. They're subtle, soothing, but far more characterful than whites or neutrals. And with Graham & Brown's Color of the Year named Rose Earth, it's fair to assume that delicate pink tones will be popping up in interiors throughout 2027.

'My guess would be some sort of dusty pink, soft blush, or mauve color,' says Brooke Mennen-Talsma of Brooke MT Interiors. 'We’ve had years of earthy greens and browns and I think people are ready for something a little softer and more romantic, but still feels mature and grown-up. A blush or muted mauve has that warmth and nostalgia that fits right into the cozy, lived-in homes everyone seems to be craving.'

'I think it would look gorgeous drenched on the walls of a sitting room, powder bathroom, or mudroom. It feels warm and livable. I think incorporating the color onto both the walls and décor and materiality is the ideal move, but if that scares you or your client, you could use it in simpler ways such as a Roman shade, a lampshade, or a lounge chair. It pairs beautifully with both light and dark wood tones and it could almost read as a warm neutral to live with for many years to come.'

5. Emerald Green

'If we’re honest, our hearts are holding out for a jewel-toned green as the Pantone Color of the Year 2027,' says Gina Elkins of Studio Casa Vita. 'We’d love to see something rich and vibrant, like the color of a magnolia leaf at peak bloom, where the sun almost reflects a navy undertone.'

'We’d absolutely love to use a jewel-toned green in a bar or study. To embrace the shade, we’d saturate the space in a lacquer finish or use it as a tone for a lime plaster with an earthy, troweled warmth,' Gina adds. 'To elevate design, we’d pair the green with a balance of copper and cream, and drench all of the upholstery in similarly toned mohairs, leathers, and linens.'

While we can't be sure which shade will take the crowning spot as Pantone's Color of the Year 2027, designers are convinced it'll be a playful, rich, saturated shade designed to bring life and character into any scheme.

'It brings a freshness which is light and pretty and perfectly suited to the traditional joinery so often found in an English country kitchen.'

'I love the hint of nostalgia apple green brings to a kitchen,' she continues. 'It reminds me of cozy country cottages and connects beautifully with the garden without feeling overpowering or overly vibrant. They never get old – apple green, for me, is timeless.'

Paying attention to the size of each print (for example, large-scale florals versus delicate, ditzy polka dots) is exactly how to succeed at mixing traditional and modern patterns. Here's how designers use this handy tip to guide their decorating decisions.

When pairing pattern on pattern, the key to creating cohesion is finding common ground through shared color. Then use scale to inform your layering, opting for large-scale prints on larger pieces, and ditzy, finer patterns on smaller soft furnishings.

'A useful rule of thumb is to start with one larger-scale design, introduce a smaller-scale pattern and perhaps a stripe, both of which pick up colors from the larger design,' explains interior designer Anna Haines. 'I would then consider adding one or two textured plains, such as a slubby linen or a mohair. It's this variation in scale and texture that allows the different patterns to sit comfortably alongside each other, without competing for attention.'

'I tend to use larger scale patterns on larger scale elements like curtains where you can read the pattern repeat and appreciate the scale,' Anna adds. 'I would then consider a smaller, more geometric print for an armchair in front of this, for example, so it allows both patterns to co-exist and breathe within the same space.'

'Like all truly successful decoration, the magic comes from the combination of color and textiles, and how they are woven together. I tend to work with a fairly matching scheme to start with, and then accent it with a rogue element to make it feel less contrived and more visually striking.'

Layering patterns according to their 'importance' is a great way to ensure no print is demanding too much attention. Scale ensures contrasting patterns clash in the right way, where the smaller prints blend seamlessly with the more striking styles.

'Scale is a great way to think about the scale and character of each pattern in relation to the others, and I try to avoid anything that feels redundant,' says interior designer Tara McCauley. 'Even in a very pattern-rich room, there should be a sense of visual hierarchy. Not every element needs to demand the same amount of attention.'

'It's important to vary the scale of patterns within a room so they're not competing with one another. Don't put patterns too close in scale next to one another, or things will look off balance. I also like to vary the types of patterns I'm using, mixing florals with geometrics, stripes, and more abstract designs.'

'For instance, I like to put a large-scale print next to a small-scale woven. Or I'll try to mix the style of prints in a room,' adds Tara. 'Think a bold graphic pattern next to something intricate or imperfect in a handmade way. The goal is to create a sense of rhythm and balance.'

Scale is useful for deciding which patterns to layer, but it's important to keep some pieces pattern-free in your scheme, too. The less-is-more approach ensures your pattern pieces stand out and really pay off.

'The usual advice on mixing patterns is: one small, one medium and one large-scale pattern. Strictly speaking that’s not wrong, but it doesn’t ensure a brilliant effect,' says Ainsley Stewart of Ainsley Brookins Design. 'To get to “Wow,” there should be a significant block of your main color without pattern, on a sofa or a rug, for example, in the room. A pattern always looks prettiest nestled up against a solid or trimmed with a solid color. Then, consider how graphic each pattern is. The eye almost reads a delicate, faded fabric pattern as a solid, so you can combine quite a few of those, in different sizes, as long as they have similar color components.'

'At the other end of the spectrum, a stripe or high contrast print will speak more loudly, so you’ll want to be more judicious, using less of the largest scale pattern particularly. Finally, even though they contain patterns, prints found in nature, such as faux bois or tortoiseshell, have a calming, neutral effect and can usually be inserted into designs without worrying where they fall on the scale spectrum. When selections are made correctly, your eye will move freely around the room from sofa to ottoman to windows and walls and back again in a happy, harmonious loop.'

'Tobacco brown has an inherent warmth that feels especially appealing in autumn,' says interior designer CeCe Barfield Thompson. 'It reminds me of polished wood, leather-bound books, antique furniture, and all the beautiful natural colors we associate with the season. There’s something wonderfully comforting about it.'

'What I love most, though, is that it feels timeless rather than seasonal. It can be rich and dramatic, but also incredibly restful. As the days grow shorter and we begin spending more time indoors, I think we’re naturally drawn to rooms that feel intimate, layered, and welcoming. Tobacco brown creates that atmosphere beautifully, particularly in the evening when the lamps are lit, and the room takes on an almost jewel-box quality.'

Reminiscent of fallen leaves, tobacco brown evokes a wintry warmth that's so fitting for this time of year. 'I just read Emily Dickinson's poem, Autumn, where she writes that 'the morns are meeker than they were, the nuts are getting brown; The berry's cheek is plumper, the rose is out of town'. Similar to her autumnal references, I think the tone of tobacco brown conveys the essence of the changing seasons, from summer to fall,' says Stephanie Luk, Creative Director for Electric Bowery.

'We wanted the sitting room's color palette to be distinct from the rest of the house – darker, moodier, warmer, and centered around the fireplace. Since the space is usually used at night, we incorporated a deep, warm, and earthy brown color palette in luxurious fabrics to set the tone of the room.'

'With any color palette, you can either contrast or complement,' Stephanie adds. 'If the goal is balance, I usually pair dark browns with complementary colors like warm umbers, siennas, rich reds, and plums. When pairing similar colors and tones, it's always a good idea to play with different textures, patterns and finishes – whether it's the grain texture in wood, the sheen on a velvet fabric, or a glossy paint.'

While dark brown paint cocoons small rooms, it also shifts beautifully in daylight. 'This south-facing room gets lots and lots of sunlight during the day, and I’d always thought that if anywhere could support a dark wall, it was here,' says interior designer Brandon Schubert on the living room pictured above. 'As soon as I saw the chocolate brown linen, which was the perfect shade of brown (not too purple, not too pale, just the color of rich milk chocolate), I knew I had my walls sorted.'

'It is a cozy color,' Brandon says. 'When you are sitting in a brown room, especially in the evening by lamplight, or with candles burning and a fire going, the light just hits the wall and stops spreading. It brings everything inward. It also feels incredibly contemplative and calm during the day. Shadows and reflections lose their contrast. Everything feels gentler.'

'The key is not to make the room feel too dark. So when thinking about the flooring, I opted for a pale oak,' Brandon adds. 'When thinking about the rug, I chose a creamy ground. The strong colors in the room are deep red, yellow and blue, but they are merely accents. Pops of color to keep the room from feeling drab and boring.'

'I’d also avoid anything too bright white against a brown wall. So for the cornice and skirting in this room I chose a lovely milky-tea color from Farrow & Ball called “Cat’s Paw”. The ceiling is off-white, but a shade dingier than elsewhere in the house.'

Brown kitchens have been on trend this whole year, replacing grays and whites with warmth and richness. 'The room has limited natural light, and rather than fighting that, I wanted to embrace it,' says CeCe about the dining room pictured above. 'We chose a rich tobacco brown to contrast with the windows, making the natural light feel more pronounced. The high-gloss finish reflects light throughout the room, adding depth and luminosity.'

'The space also serves as both a library and dining room, a combination I particularly love for urban living,' CeCe continues. 'The dark palette creates an intimate, enveloping quality that feels equally suited to curling up with a book or hosting a glamorous dinner. I believe the best rooms are both beautiful and truly lived in.'

'For me, it’s all about contrast and layering. Dark brown is a wonderful backdrop for art, antiques, and interesting textiles, but it’s important to introduce elements that catch the light and keep the room from feeling too heavy. In this room, the gilt portrait frame, brass lighting, and polished wood bring warmth and reflection, while the lighter patterned upholstery and pillows provide relief from the richness of the walls.'

'I particularly loved pairing tobacco brown with soft pinks, lavender, cream, and touches of burgundy inspired by Pierre Frey’s Madame Elisabeth fabric. The combination feels sophisticated and interesting. I also like mixing finishes – glossy walls with soft velvet, crisp linen, and aged brass. This interplay of color, finish, and texture adds depth, making a dark room feel inviting rather than somber.'

'I love how this treatment brings attention to the individual details of the cabinetry. Using a second color on the inset panel emphasizes the door profile and introduces another layer of depth and interest. It’s a relatively simple way to give the millwork more character without changing the overall design,' says Maggie Vollrath of Provision Studios.

'I also think it’s a wonderful way to elevate painted cabinetry, particularly when the budget doesn’t allow for more expensive materials or finishes. A thoughtful use of color can make even relatively simple cabinetry feel much more considered and custom.'

The timing of this kitchen trend is no coincidence. Designs have shifted from sleek and white to dark and moody, but a colorful or contrasting border offers a middle ground. It also taps into a more timeless approach. A kitchen drenched in one bold color can lose its lustre after a while, but a smaller infusion, especially when paired with a neutral, feels more enduring.

'People want color, but many are still wary of committing to a fully colorful kitchen. A border is the middle ground: it brings personality while keeping the overall look light. There's a longevity argument too. Clients want kitchens that last, and because the border is painted, the color can change in a few years without replacing any of the joinery,' explains Adam Peck, Partner at 202 design.

The trend also taps into the more lived-in style many homeowners want in their cooking spaces. Many traditional kitchen features have made a comeback, from freestanding furniture and open storage styles to historic architectural details, and cabinet borders create a softer, more decorative, and slightly more personalized feel that these revived features are known for.

'I think traditional, handcrafted details are having a real resurgence. In a world where so much is mass-produced, which certainly has its place, there’s something especially appealing about the smaller details that require a more personal touch. They bring a sense of individuality to a space that can be difficult to replicate,' Maggie adds.

'I love that we’re seeing more inspiration drawn from analogue sources and a renewed appreciation for traditional millwork and decorative techniques. Cabinetry is a natural extension of that. There’s something really interesting about looking at antique furniture and the way color was used to highlight individual details, then finding ways to bring those ideas into kitchens today.'

Colorful kitchen cabinet borders are a relatively easy look to get right, but proportions are important. Narrower borders often feel more delicate and traditional, while thicker bands feel more playful and contemporary. 'One thing we were really intentional about at Willow Lane [pictured below] was keeping all of the lower cabinetry as drawers. With contrasting colors, too many different door shapes and proportions can make the design feel busy. You certainly don’t have to use all drawers, but repeating the same configurations allows the lines and contrast to flow naturally throughout the kitchen,' Maggie explains.

Perhaps the most important factor is the color combinations you use. Two really bold colors can be striking, but you also risk falling out of love with your kitchen colors quickly. For balance, designers often choose neutral cabinets with a colorful border – this adds unexpected color without entirely overwhelming the scheme.

'We designed this kitchen [pictured above] in collaboration with Sarah Peake of Studio Peake, and the brief was to bring color, fun and freshness into the room while respecting the Arts & Crafts architecture of the property,' Adam explains. 'A painted border allowed us to be playful with color in a subtle, considered way. The lower cabinets are finished in Argile Blanc de Meudon, with a Farrow & Ball Suffield Green border to each door and drawer front. The green is repeated on the tall units, the arched alcove and the window frames, which ties the kitchen into the wider scheme.'

Even though we are seeing many kitchen cabinet borders in brighter colors, it's a trend that works beautifully in a neutral scheme too. Contrast is the most important detail that makes the look work, so you can choose a light and dark neutral to create the design in a more pared-back way, as this Provision Studios project shows.

'At Willow Lane, we used two timeless Farrow & Ball colors, Bone and School House White. I loved this combination because the contrast was so subtle, almost as though we had simply moved a few shades away from our base white,' Maggie adds, explaining that the trend works best when you choose colors you truly love.

'I think that approach can work with almost any color scheme. Start with a color you love, then look for a lighter or darker shade with a complementary undertone. The colors don’t necessarily have to be in the same family, but they should feel like a natural extension of one another.'

One of the best parts of living in New England is the abundance of beautiful coastal towns. Places like Kennebunkport, Maine; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Mystic, Connecticut, are packed with visitors during the summer months, and for good reason. But after spending most of my life in the area, I’ve learned that my favorite time to visit is actually in the fall, once the crowds have cleared.

In autumn, you can enjoy nearly everything that makes these seaside towns so appealing, along with a few seasonal perks. Local seafood, such as oysters and scallops, starts to reach peak season, the scenery becomes even more charming, and the days are often still warm enough for beach walks and boat trips. Best of all, there are far fewer people. You can get a table at a popular restaurant or book a great hotel room without planning months in advance.

So, when I can, I try to sneak away to one of these towns in early October. This year, my husband and I headed to Newport, Rhode Island, one of my favorite coastal destinations in New England.

Newport has a particular appeal for architecture and design lovers. Along the waterfront, well-curated boutiques mingle with old fishing shacks and restaurants housed in weather-worn clapboard buildings. A few blocks inland, cobblestone streets wind past historic homes and churches dating back to the 1700s. Along Bellevue Avenue stand the city’s famous Gilded Age mansions, a reminder of Newport’s glamorous past. There’s plenty to do no matter what time of year you visit, but here are some of my must-dos.

Where to Stay

I love a hotel that captures a sense of place. When I travel, I want to feel immersed in my surroundings, which is why I tend to gravitate toward boutique hotels. Luckily, Newport has a number of beautiful options, but this time, we stayed at Gardiner House, just a block from both the harbor and Thames Street, the city’s main shopping corridor.

The hotel feels distinctly Newport and was designed to evoke one of the city’s glamorous private residences. The guest rooms have a coastal aesthetic, but in a clean, understated way, while the public spaces feel more layered and artistic. Much of the design draws inspiration from Howard Gardiner Cushing, the Newport artist for whom the hotel is named and whose grandson owns the property. The two-story mural in the hotel’s lobby is even a recreation of the hand-painted original in Cushing’s own Newport home, The Ledges.

It’s a newer addition to Newport that’s only been open since 2024, but it’s already one of my favorites. If Gardiner House is booked, take a peek at Gilded or The Cliffside Inn, two other boutique hotels in the area that I love.

Where to Eat

Newport has no shortage of excellent restaurants, but I tend to gravitate toward the old standbys for two reasons: great food and an atmosphere that feels distinctly Newport.

One of my first stops is usually 22 Bowen’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar, right on the wharf. On this visit, my husband and I stopped for a drink at the outdoor bar and watched the sun set over the harbor, which is a magical way to start an evening. Personally, I think waterfront dining is even better in sweater weather than in the summer heat.

Next was another of my longtime favorites, Clarke Cooke House, which has been around since 1973, though its building dates back to 1780. The ceilings are low, the floors are creaky and slightly crooked, and the whole place feels very much like old New England. We snagged seats at the bar overlooking a little inlet of the harbor, which might be my favorite spot in the restaurant.

My final go-to, which we sadly didn’t get a chance to visit on this trip, is the White Horse Tavern, which dates back to 1673 and is considered one of the oldest operating restaurants in the world. Stepping inside feels almost like traveling back in time, with its colonial architecture, exposed beams, small rooms, and enormous fireplaces. It’s the perfect place to spend a chilly evening.

One newer spot deserves a mention, too: Flora, inside Gardiner House, where we stayed. It’s one of the most beautifully designed restaurants I’ve been to in a long time, and the breakfast we had there was just as good as the interiors. During the summer, getting a table at any of these spots requires planning well in advance. But that’s just another reason to plan your visit in the fall.

Where to Browse

Shopping in Newport is a must, especially if you love decorating with antiques as much as I do. There are plenty of great clothing boutiques along Thames Street, the main shopping drag, but I usually find myself wandering into antique shops, home stores, and anywhere I might stumble across a one-of-a-kind find.

A few favorites include Cottage & Garden, a beautifully curated little shop that mixes antique furniture and accessories with garden finds like topiaries, terracotta pots, and marble urns.

I also love Drawing Room Antiques on Spring Street (another excellent shopping street overall), which specializes in finer antiques. It’s worth visiting just to admire the collection, especially because the shop is apparently haunted. I’ve never experienced anything out of the ordinary, but the shop’s owners swear that the items’ former owners occasionally come back for a visit.

For a bargain or a small piece of art or decor, I also like to stop by Antique Boutique, also on Spring Street.

My absolute favorite, though, is Aardvark Antiques on the outskirts of town. It’s part antique store, part architectural salvage yard, and unlike almost anywhere else I’ve shopped. The collection includes everything from old iron gates and marble mantels to enormous sculptures, art, mirrors, and furniture. It’s not necessarily the place to pick up something small that you can pack into your suitcase for the trip home, but if you’re renovating a house or looking for actual furniture pieces, it’s definitely worth a stop.

What to Do

Beyond the waterfront, beaches, and shopping, Newport’s biggest attraction is its collection of Gilded Age mansions. In the late 1800s, the city was the summer destination for some of America’s wealthiest families, including the Vanderbilts and Astors, who built enormous estates along the coast.

Many of these former private residences are now maintained by the local preservation society and are open for public tours. I’ve been visiting them since I was a kid, and I still find them just as fascinating.

The grandest of the mansions is The Breakers, built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in the 1890s. At 125,000 square feet, it’s closer in size to a shopping mall than a summer house, with interiors that are almost impossibly ornate. It’s absolutely worth seeing, especially if it’s your first visit.

My personal favorites, though, are nearby Rosecliff and Marble House. Rosecliff has a stunning heart-shaped staircase and an enormous ballroom that you might recognize from the 1970s version of The Great Gatsby, while Marble House is exactly what its name suggests: an extravagant, marble-filled mansion built by William Vanderbilt as a birthday gift for his wife.

If you have time for one more thing, take a walk along the Cliff Walk. The path runs between the ocean and the backyards of many of Newport’s mansions, both public and private, so it’s a great way to take in everything the city has to offer all at once.

Shop Newport-Inspired Picks

Every time I visit Newport, I find another reason to love it, whether it’s a shop I haven’t discovered before or a new detail in a historic house I’ve walked past a dozen times. And while it’s beautiful any time of year, there’s something about having the city a little more to yourself in the fall that makes it even better.

But why? Perhaps a little too imposing? Molly says it comes down to the fabric. ‘On a window, it’s all about the material and what’s around it. I love our chocolate linen because of how the specific weave lets the light move through it – it feels earthy and almost sun-faded rather than heavy.' The rich, 'Le Café' shade joins two more lightweight linens in Au Lait, a warm, milky ivory, and Classique, a classic stripe, alongside two sheers: embroidered lace Fleur and Voile Blanche.

‘I also like giving a darker curtain a little breathing room: warm plaster walls, lighter upholstery, something with age and patina. Brown is basically a neutral in my book. Treat it like one, and it becomes surprisingly easy to live with.’

And, be it chocolate or otherwise, a great curtain, especially one that hangs solo, hinges on the drape. Musing the layered, theatrical windows Molly observed during her travels to France and Italy, soft valances are another standout of the lacy, piped-to-perfection collection.

‘Think wardrobe, not matching set,’ Molly continues. Café curtains offer privacy without blocking the outside’s natural beauty in kitchens and bathrooms; Roman shades gather neatly at the bottom, lending bedrooms an enveloping softness without feeling too formal. Each can exist, or even be double-dressed, alongside the collection’s full-length drapery. ‘If I’m layering, I want the pieces to do different jobs – a sheer for softness and filtered light, then a linen with more weight and structure. The trick is making sure they aren’t competing for attention.’

For Molly, that means separating church and state: chocolate gets its window, ivory gets another. The nuance comes from the fabrics themselves, which might not surprise fans of her earthy minimalist DNA.

‘I usually keep the palette tonal and let the contrast come from texture, transparency, and weight. It’s the same reason a linen shirt under a great jacket works: similar language, completely different jobs. And I always go higher and wider when the architecture allows. Give all that fabric somewhere to breathe.’

Maybe chocolate brown curtains aren't actually the winter coat we think they are. In a light-filtering weave, with thoughtful layers and a generous drape, even the most bundling, satiating shade carries a certain levity. My favorite feature, however, was always the Christmas village she had on display in her cozy living room. Some of our favorite bathrooms combine multiple tile shapes, scales, textures, and finishes, and that's often what makes them interesting. We love pairing something small and glossy with a large, dramatic slab of stone, or introducing a darker, unexpected material into an otherwise light space,' says Kailee.

'In our La Costa bathroom, we paired espresso-colored pill tiles with natural stone, and that contrast brought so much depth to the room. We think we'll continue seeing more intricate tilework, interesting layouts, and combinations that feel a little less predictable. The trick is making sure there's still a common thread connecting everything.'

We're personally drawn to pieces that feel a little more traditional or unusual, whether that's a beautiful cross-handle faucet, an ornate wall-mounted fixture, decorative backplates, or hardware with an antique influence,' Kailee explains.

'We also love mixing metals when it's done intentionally. Polished nickel alongside aged brass, for example, can feel so much more collected than having every single finish match. These details are almost like jewelry for a bathroom, and we think they deserve just as much consideration as the tile or stone. It's those little choices that can really set a space apart.'

4. A More Personalized Take on Tile Installations

It's not just bathroom tile designs that are getting more adventurous, but the way they are installed, too. Even the simplest tiles can become a unique focal point when interesting patterns and layouts are chosen – and it's a look you'll be seeing much more of in 2027, from traditional European patterns to gingham tile layouts.

'I’m seeing a shift toward more thoughtful, intricate tile patterns created using classic, timeless materials. Rather than relying on ready-made designs, we’re seeing traditional tiles used in varying sizes, colors, and configurations to create something truly unique and personal. There’s a growing appreciation for the artistry and intention behind these one-of-a-kind details, rather than something purchased off the shelf,' says Alexandra Azat of Plaster & Patina.

And she's not the only one noticing a shift in tile designs. 'Our clients are continuing to add texture and drama to their bathrooms through beautiful tile installations,' adds interior designer Stephanie Kraus. 'We’re treating shower walls and floors as a canvas. Long, slender tile, a chair rail, and framed panels that mimic millwork – the effect is so elegant.'

5. Clear Shower Screens Replaced By Elevated Curtains

A glass enclosure around a walk-in shower still feels incredibly chic, but when it comes to showers over baths, the clear screens are starting to feel a little bit clinical. Glass, porcelain, and tile with no reprieve lean slightly sterile. Instead, designers are gravitating back towards shower curtains, specifically designs made from linen and cotton for a high-quality finish.

'The typical clear glass shower door is feeling pretty stale these days, even with the long-overdue advent of designer handles. Instead, I've been foregoing doors altogether (I promise, you won't be cold!) or adding naturally anti-microbial 100% linen curtains to my showers,' says interior designer Bethany Adams, emphasizing the warmth they bring. 'If you're building a new, open shower, do yourself a favor and run your heated floors right into it. Not only will it add to the coziness, but your tile will dry in an instant, meaning no mold or mildew.'

6. Warmer, Moodier Bathroom Colors

Let's talk about bathroom colors. White has long been the favored color, creating a clean, open feel, but it can also feel very cold and uninviting – the opposite atmosphere we should be giving these spaces. In 2027, designers are shifting to warmer, moodier schemes that create a bathroom filled with warmth and character.

'The days of the completely white, spa-inspired bathroom being the default are behind us. We're loving deeper, earthier colors like tobacco brown, oxblood, olive, terracotta, and really beautiful warm neutrals. There's something incredibly luxurious about a bathroom that feels a little moody and enveloping,' Kailee explains.

There's a misconception that moody or rich equals dark. But even small infusions of these more evolved palettes will instantly transform a bathroom. 'That doesn't necessarily mean painting every surface a dark color, either,' she adds. 'Sometimes it's as simple as incorporating a rich chocolate tile, a beautifully colored stone, or an unexpected sink.'

7. The Reimagined Spa Bathroom

Spa bathrooms are always on trend, but the way they are being designed is very different for 2027. The color and material palette is less restrained – the whites and light woods of past trends are being replaced by earthier designs. It's more about natural references than a specific aesthetic.

'If I could sum it up in almost one word, I would say the 2027 bathroom trend is spa-inspired organic. We will see a departure from traditional white tile and open, minimalist spaces, adapting toward a more earth-tone color palette with noble, terrestrial materials like wood, marble, and even natural fiber wall coverings. The idea is to create sensory wellness with tactile surfaces, visual interest, and layered lighting,' explains Ania Agárdy of Luxury Living.

'You will see large slabs with lots of veining acting as accent walls or in areas like wet rooms where you have both the tub and the shower in the same space. You will notice more use of integrated sinks in the slab, creating a seamless look and feel. Sconces have always been my go-to for creating direct lighting, but you will see them used more as statement pieces for visual impact.'

8. Furniture-Style Vanities

A bathroom vanity offers a unique opportunity to bring an unexpected feature to your space, whether it's a new material, intricate details, or a unique silhouette. And as we head into a new year, all the trends are pointing towards furniture-inspired designs.

'Furniture-style vanities bring a more individual, less utilitarian feel to bathrooms. Whether traditional furniture or contemporary, painted timber cabinetry, these pieces add texture and a sense of permanence. There’s a growing appetite for interiors that feel collected and personal, rather than overly uniform,' explains John Law, Creative Director of Interiors at Woodhouse & Law.

'We're really excited to see bathroom vanities become more decorative and less like standard cabinetry,' Kailee agrees. 'We love incorporating antique-inspired silhouettes, beautiful wood grains, decorative feet, intricate millwork, and unexpected hardware. A vanity takes up so much visual space in a bathroom, so why not make it something really special? We want vanities to feel like pieces of furniture that were thoughtfully selected for the space, not just cabinets that happen to hold a sink.'

9. Sinks as Sculptural Focal Points

Staying with the vanity area, this next trend focuses on bathroom sinks. Instead of standard porcelain designs and basins hidden away, the new focus is on statement sinks, whether it's a colorful design or an unexpected material.

'We think sinks are going to become much more of a design moment. There are so many incredible options beyond the traditional white undermount sink, and we're excited to see people embrace them. Carved marble basins, terracotta sinks, unusual shapes, and more sculptural forms can completely transform a bathroom,' Kailee notes.

'We incorporated terracotta sinks into our La Costa project, and we love the handcrafted quality they bring to the space. A sink is something you interact with every single day, so we think it's worth making it beautiful. Sometimes one really special fixture can do more for a room than adding a dozen decorative details.'

10. A Focus On Traditional Details

A lot of the more modern styles lack that lived-in appeal that makes bathrooms feel like rooms you want to spend time in, rather than a functional space. It's why the biggest shift in this year's trends is toward more traditional features, whether it's cabinet styles or custom details.

'I’m seeing a return to classic Shaker-style cabinetry, but with more unexpected, nuanced color choices,' says Alexandra. 'It’s really about taking familiar, enduring design elements and reinterpreting them in ways that feel fresh, individual, and full of character.'

For Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer of Hommeboys, 2027 bathroom trends are pointing back to traditional design, like 'unique, custom tile work with hand-painted or printed detailing, using natural materials in innovative ways, and embracing patina and wear.'

'There's a deepening of the return to more traditional details and enduring, layered design,' they continue. 'Custom pieces that have a handmade quality feel more authentic and intimate and are lovely to live with. Natural materials that patina beautifully over time provide a value that lasts and is less wasteful.'

While the iconic star-within-a-star silhouette remains, this year’s drop introduces more intricate, origami-style folds, giving the familiar paper shades a little more surface area for whimsy. The snowflake-inspired Paper Petal Star carries all the delicate beauty of a winter wonderland storybook, while its counterparts arrive in punchier greens and reds, borrowing from IKEA’s ‘Happy Carnival’ mood for 2026. ‘I wanted to evoke laughter and make Christmas decor more relaxed. The shapes are geometric and simple yet playful, with eye-popping colors. I hope they will add joy and a stress-free perspective on Christmas,’ says IKEA designer Marta Krupińska.

For all the unexpectedly punchy colors, new star- and leaf-shaped lighting chains, and even a surprisingly surreal matchstick-shaped floor lamp, one thing hasn’t changed in decades of STRÅLA lighting: the sheer number of places you can put it. Homes & Gardens' Head of Interiors, Hebe Hatton, considers the paper stars a holiday tradition.

‘I have had my first IKEA Stråla light for almost a decade. It sat in the window of my first apartment, adding holiday cheer to my tiny space that didn’t have much room for festive flourishes. I loved that it worked as both an indoor light I could enjoy from the couch and an outdoor Christmas decoration that glowed for the neighbors to see, too.’

She’s been adding to her collection with successive October drops ever since. Not because the old ones wither away (quite the opposite), but because each new riff on the famous style adds something special to her holiday scheme.

‘I have since added to the collection,’ Hebe continues. ‘When I moved house and had more windows, one went up in each. One year, I hung them above my dining table; another year, one adorned the mirror above my fireplace. Each year, they come out of the attic looking the same as when they went away because they fold down so neatly. So, despite being made of paper, they last so well.’

Like an icy complement to the usual holiday shades, baby blue adds a fresh layer of visual interest to traditional Christmas decor ideas. This color trend is a natural fit for coastal-inspired Christmas displays, which is why there’s no shortage of it in Serena and Lily’s holiday collection. But removed from the coastal context, these powdery blues feel like a new classic for Christmas that can reimagine even the most traditional holiday schemes with cool, understated elegance.

This season, many of our favorite brands featured sweet shades of pale blues in their holiday collections, and McGee & Co.’s range was one of the first to catch our attention. Designer Shea McGee incorporated the color in the form of flowing bows, ribbons, and even painted ornaments – each acting as a tasteful accent to her heritage-inspired holiday range. Baby blue has also been spotted in Crate & Barrel's holiday collection in the form of a whimsical Bell Garland, Frontgate has added this pale hue among the red and greens with its Chalet Stocking and for Lulu and Georgia's new collection, pale blue comes in the form of a luxurious smoky-toned velvet tree skirt.

Though much cooler than the holiday shades we’re used to, this color doesn’t feel out of place. Instead, it provides the perfect contrast – a light and airy alternative to soften the heaviness that can sometimes overwhelm holiday displays. It doesn’t need to be the main color of your Christmas arrangement either; just add a few pops of it here and there and watch as it gives the scene an entirely new feeling.

This year marks the 30th anniversary, with Ben Pentreath named as the new winner. The awards also coincide with the release of Volume 30 of the annual Interior Design Review, which showcases 100 designers from around the world. Dubbed the ‘Bible of Interior Design’, it goes beyond simply highlighting amazing talent; it has become a reflection of design that extends beyond aesthetics to explore political and historical movements and changes. It’s a beautiful book to add to the coffee table, but also an invaluable resource that offers more than just pretty pictures.

‘When we launched the award in 1996, the idea was simple – find the very best interior designers, wherever they happen to be working, and give them a proper stage,' explains Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin. 'Our first winner was Kelly Hoppen, and that spirit of discovery has stayed with us ever since. It feels rather fitting that in our 30th year the award comes home to Britain, with Ben Pentreath.'

'The Review has grown up alongside the award. This year’s edition runs to over 500 pages and more than 1,200 photographs, and if you line up all thirty volumes on a shelf, you get a pretty good picture of how the way we live has changed – what we’ve fallen in and out of love with, and who’s been leading the way. It’s a working tool for designers as much as it’s a book to get happily lost in.'

'As for the 100, we’ve never been interested in simply rounding up the usual names. We now have designers from more than 30 countries in the awards’ community, and every year we put emerging talent right alongside people at the very top of their game. Some of the newer names produce the most exciting work in the book.'

Homes & Gardens caught up with five of the 100 designers featured in this year’s review, not only to gain insight into their personal styles and journeys, but also to get a sense of where design is heading. Jo Bee, Kara Childress, Gregory Mellor and Kavita Singh may have very different styles and backstories, and work in different parts of the world, but our conversations touched on some very similar topics.

We have all seen a huge shift away from fleeting trends, fast interiors and cookie-cutter spaces that might look pleasing but lack depth. All the designers agreed that interiors designed for life are where ‘trends’ are heading – homes that reflect the people who live in them, rather than following trends that won’t last until the end of the year.

AI was also a topic of interest, even excitement, with conversations exploring how it can help designers work with clients in ways that haven’t previously been possible. Evolving technology is something everyone approaches with a degree of caution, but its potential benefits lie in how it can broaden the possibilities for both designers and clients.

'I’m a big fan of Jo Bee. She marshals colour and pattern with real courage, and nobody else does it quite the way she does,' says Martin. 'Gregory Mellor follows a long line of wonderful South African designers. You can feel his connection to the African countryside in everything he does, and it’s what gives his pared-back luxury its character.'

'With Kara Childress, it’s all about texture – walls, ceilings, floors and doors, before you’ve even got to the furniture. She captures that quintessentially American balance of relaxed comfort and carefully organised elegance. And Kavita Singh is at the forefront of a generation of Indian designers drawing on the traditions and heritage of their culture to create a distinctively Indian vernacular.’

1. Jo Bee

Jo Bee's interiors are a master class in colour. And not the safe, muted colours we've all been getting braver with recently. Many of her palettes include bright pinks, vivid apple greens, and the brightest cobalt blues. And yet, despite her projects being full of joy and whimsy, they are always refined – the dramatic rainbow shades are sophisticated and surprisingly liveable.

'Growing up in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, within a family utterly captivated by art and property, design was in my blood,' Jo tells Homes & Gardens. 'My formal journey began at the London College of Fashion, immersing myself in the capital's vibrant creative scene, followed by Newcastle, where I studied Interior Architecture. In between, I lived in Milan and travelled the world, collecting inspiration and cramming my backpack with every unique and inspiring textile I could find along the way.'

'After several years of gaining invaluable experience within the interiors industry, and with the encouragement of my husband, I established Design by Jo Bee, my studio in Yorkshire. I successfully navigate the wonderful and chaotic balance of motherhood, with three children and our fourth and final little one on the way, alongside running the studio. Having won several industry awards over the last few years, I feel incredibly energised about the future. The next chapter for the studio will be focused on pushing my creative boundaries and further bringing my design and business dreams to life.'

'Now, I would define my aesthetic as joyful, eclectic, thoughtfully layered, and rich with colour. The evolution of personal style is a fascinating thing to me. Early in my career, my work was naturally guided by the briefs of my clients. Today, however, clients come to Design by Jo Bee precisely for our established, signature look. It has transformed the design process into an incredibly rewarding partnership – a shared, joyful exploration of space, colour and style.'

'What is most thrilling is the newfound bravery we are seeing from clients. People are shedding the fear of colour and are increasingly eager to make bold, expressive choices in both residential and commercial spaces. It is an incredibly liberating time to be a designer, and I am forever grateful to my clients for putting their trust in me.'

'I am thrilled to see homes looking increasingly lived-in and collected, rather than the sterile, perfectly staged interiors we have seen for so many years. Layered and character-rich interiors that tell a truly unique story of their inhabitants are so much more interesting to me, and it is wonderful to see this coming through more and more. I think this is certainly one of the biggest trends I am interested in.'

'I always hope for more pattern, more texture, more bravery, and more perfectly imperfect homes. I hope people fight back against simply following a trend because it exists and stay true to who they are, creating a slower, more collected home. I think it's easy to feel a little lost in the world these days, with social media making it seem so vastly overwhelming at times. Having a collected home feels personal and truly British.'

2. Kara Childress

Sophistication and livability come together in the projects of US-based designer Kara Childress. Her spaces are utterly classic, leaning toward the traditional, but transitional would be a better way to describe them. It's hard to pinpoint an exact style or era; rather, the spaces have a timelessness to them, subtly blending many different aesthetics to create homes that are truly unique. But her projects are never overly precious. She often works with families who want rooms they can actually use and that feel inviting, rather than overly curated.

'I founded my firm in 1985, and for many years I was a one-woman show,' Kara explains. 'As the business grew, I was invited into projects earlier, during the architectural and building stages, and that opened an entirely new dimension of the work for me. Today we are a team of six, and I still delight in the smallest details. They have always been my bread and butter, particularly when they allow us to create something that feels uniquely tailored to a family.'

'It is one of the greatest honors when a client asks us to return for another home. Over time, you come to know a family so well, and it is such a joy to watch their lives unfold in an entirely new setting. Our work now takes us across the country, from mountain retreats to oceanfront homes and ranches, often with several generations in mind. Looking ahead, I am heartened to see more people placing value on comfort and longevity. I have always wanted our homes to be striking, but just as importantly, I want them to be lived in and well-loved.'
