The reality of cozying up indoors over winter is that the condensation we produce through cooking, showering, drying laundry, and simply breathing in and out is inevitable.

Getting rid of condensation with a sensible, consistent daily routine is the key to avoiding long-term problems, along with reducing moisture in the home overall.

This is the five-minute reset I do every morning, and it has helped prevent a host of problems, including the risk of mold and respiratory aggravation, for many years in my home.

My 5-Minute Morning Window Condensation Fix

First, I simply use a microfiber cloth to wipe window condensation away before I start work every morning. I like the Mr.SIGA ones available in bulk from Amazon or at Walmart to dry the condensation that’s collected overnight on my upstairs windows.

This might sound like a bit of a cliché, but if you don’t want to spend money on one of the best dehumidifiers (with upfront and running costs), or lose the heat in your house with open windows, this is a simple step you can integrate into your morning routine.

The problem isn’t that there is a little bit of moisture on your windows; it’s if the moisture stays, and either eventually damages the surrounding materials, such as the plaster on your walls or the fabric of your window treatments, or it creates the perfect setup for mold spores to settle and grow their colonies.

Mold in the home, especially black mold, can lead to respiratory problems and health issues, as well as unsightly marks and unpleasant musky smells.

Wiping away the condensation every morning, and throwing open your windows for five minutes, also known as shock ventilation, will allow fresh air to circulate, and make sure any mold spores in the air do not have a cushty home to sink into and thrive.

If you prefer a natural route, a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water works surprisingly well for light mold on hard, non-porous surfaces. Keeping humidity at home between 30-50% is ideal to avoid mold problems at high levels, and scratchy throats and dry skin at lower levels.

There are plenty of actions, big and small, that will help reduce condensation in your home.

• Ensure adequate daily ventilation.
• Don’t ventilate externally when it’s raining outside, as this can increase, rather than control the humidity in your home.
• Wipe down moisture on windows, frames, and surfaces daily. If you spot a line of mold, clean it with a commercial cleaner such as RMR‑86 Instant Mold & Mildew Stain Remover from Amazon.
• Open curtains and blinds daily and allow sunshine to flood your home.
• Wash curtains and drapes regularly to keep them clean and fresh.

• Allow for moisture channels – space around vents, and keep furniture away from walls so mold cannot accumulate unseen where air doesn't often flow.

Why I Prefer Microfiber Over Paper Towels

The reasons are simple. Microfiber is durable, reusable, and washes extremely well, making it a great way to be more sustainable at home when you are cleaning or maintaining your space. It also soaks up moisture much better than paper towels, leaving you with zero smears on your windows when cleaning or after soaking up that morning's window condensation.

After I use microfiber clothes to wipe down my window condensation in the morning, I use a homemade spray with a one-to-one ratio of water to white vinegar, available in a resealable 128 Fl. Oz bottles at Walmart, all over the cloth to kill any mold, viruses, and bacteria. I pop that in my washer along with other items that can tolerate a hot wash and dry, and that’s it.

If I have nothing to wash that day, I air dry the clothes I used to stop on the condensation to stop them smelling of mildew, and then pop them in with the next laundry load.

In all the years I have done this five-minute morning condensation reset, I’ve found no adverse effect from using the same cloth on my windows for two or even three days in a row, as long as it’s dried in between and spritzed with vinegar to prevent active mold spores or bacteria from making it smell.

I am in chronic pain and have limited mobility so instead of big cleans, I do mini but impactful chores in my bathroom every time I show to keep mold and grime away.

We’re lucky that we have an expansive banister in our hallway, which is the perfect spot to quickly dry our towels. It’s out of sight of any visitors downstairs, whilst capitalizing on the hot air that rises up the stairs in our very well-insulated, newly built home.

Towels that are washed frequently and dry quickly won’t end up with that horrible musty, mildewy smell. As a person with the nose of a hound, and unfortunately able to smell even the tiniest whiff of anything unpleasant, this is one laundry tip I will never skip.

5. Open Windows and Run the Fan

Understanding what each appliance does, how they work, and how to use them can help you pick the right tools for your home and use them efficiently to maintain good humidity.

Dehumidifiers

As the name suggests, dehumidifiers lower humidity levels, thus 'dehumidifying' the space.

Bethany Uribe, dehumidifier expert from ASAP Restoration, explains, 'Essentially, a dehumidifier pulls water vapor out of the air by condensing it and collecting it in a receptacle.

'A fan takes the wet air and pushes it over the evaporator coils. These are filled with a refrigerant condensed liquid. When the wet air passes over the cooler coils, its capacity to hold the moisture is reduced. This then causes the moisture to be deposited through condensation and collected in the reservoir.'

When the reservoir is full of water, it must be emptied either by yourself or through an integrated draining system. It's one of the many things I wish I knew before buying a dehumidifier.

Humidifiers do the exact opposite of a dehumidifier, adding moisture back into the air.

Brad Roberson, president of Aire Serv, explains: 'Humidifiers are used to combat dry air in homes. With proper humidification, homeowners can reduce the occurrence of allergens. Reducing the allergens in the home makes the air easier to breathe.'

Humidifiers have water reservoirs that need to be periodically filled up so that the humidifier can turn it into vapor.

Humidifiers come in various types, including evaporative, ultrasonic, and steam vaporizers. They work by using a water reservoir (that the user typically fills up themselves) and a mechanism to disperse moisture into the air, either through a fan or ultrasonic vibrations.

Air purifiers

Air purifiers are designed to remove contaminants from the air. They typically use mechanical filters (like HEPA filters) and carbon filters to capture particles like dust, dander, pollen, smoke, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The good news, however, is there is a houseplant for nearly every challenging growing environment - including lower humidity levels. Here are five to get you started:

1. Pothos

With so many pothos varieties to choose from, it's no wonder these beautiful variegated, indoor hanging plants are so popular. But it isn't just their appearance that makes them great houseplants, they also adapt well to lower humidity levels.

Although they are native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia and prefer humidity levels between 40-60%, pothos plants are quite hardy and will tolerate lower levels, too. In short, no. Err on the side of caution and avoid using a dehumidifier the bathroom as it's an electrical item, posing a safety risk in a wet room.

'Using a dehumidifier in the bathroom may seem like a practical way to tackle excess moisture, but there are significant safety and practical considerations that make this approach less than ideal,' warns Chris Michael, MD of leading dehumidifier manufacturer Meaco.

'Bathrooms are considered wet zones, and placing electrical appliances, including dehumidifiers, in such spaces can pose serious safety risks,' Michael continues. 'For example, in countries like the UK, it is against safety regulations to use electrical devices in bathrooms due to the risk of electrical shock. Furthermore, domestic dehumidifiers are not IP-rated (ingress protection rated) to operate safely in wet environments.'

That said, there are ways of using dehumidifiers within this space that can make a positive impact.

'Using a dehumidifier in the bathroom can be a great idea, but it depends on how you use it and what your bathroom set-up is like,' explains Myles Robinson, home expert and founder of UK Composite Doors.

Plus, having to empty the water tank frequently can get old fast if you’re using it daily.

'Bathrooms naturally deal with a lot of moisture, from steamy showers to wet floors, and that humidity can lead to bigger issues like mold, mildew and even peeling paint if you’re not careful,' continues Myles. 'A dehumidifier is a solid tool for managing that, but it’s not always the most practical or only solution.'

How can using a dehumidifier in the bathroom help?

Not all the experts we spoke to were against using a dehumidifier in the bathroom – in fact, some recommended it as a way to reduce your home's humidity.

'A dehumidifier in your bathroom might make sense if it's particularly prone to dampness, like a basement bathroom that has a shower,' says Simon Bernath, founder and CEO at FurnacePrices.ca. 'The dehumidifier won't be able to totally overcome the humidity generated during a shower so a good ventilator fan is still important, but it can help control residual humidity the rest of the time.'

'In general, dehumidifiers can help reduce the excess moisture in a bathroom, which will prevent the growth of mold and the development of musty odours which are caused by these spaces’ high humidity levels,' explains David Miloshev, electrician and home improvement specialist at Fantastic Services. 'However, before you use a dehumidifier in the bathroom, especially while you’re taking a shower, there will be some important considerations to keep in mind to guarantee your safety and the appliance’s optimal performance.'

Where to place a dehumidifier for steamy bathrooms

If you decide you'd like to go ahead and try using a dehumidifier in the bathroom, there are a few tips to ensure not only your safety, but also how effective this method of moisture control will be.

'The key to getting the most out of a dehumidifier in the bathroom is placement and timing,' explains Myles Robinson. 'If you’re using a portable unit, make sure it’s positioned in a spot where it can really pull in the moist air, such as near the shower or the sink area. Keep it running for 20–30 minutes after you’ve finished bathing to tackle that post-shower humidity.

Some people find dehumidifiers too loud in bedrooms, so the landing is the ideal place to position a dehumidifier in the home.'

'In many cases, there are better ways to improve bathroom ventilation to consider,' advises Myles Robinson. 'Exhaust fans are the unsung heroes of bathroom humidity control. They pull moisture straight out of the air and vent it outside, which is often more effective than just cycling it through a dehumidifier. I’ve seen homeowners with outdated or under-powered exhaust fans struggle with constant condensation issues, and upgrading to a higher-capacity fan made all the difference.'

'There are alternatives to using a dehumidifier and these could be better options if your bathroom lacks space,' points out James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder. 'For example, an extract fan is a good alternative and ventilates the excess humidity from your bathroom to the outside using an electrical motor. However, installing this type of fan may involve structural work which could be costly. You can also help with humidity by placing containers of baking soda around the room. However, this may take longer than a dehumidifier or ventilation fan.'

Punteha van Terheyden, head of Solved adds, 'I have two bathrooms that are small, steamy and the fan takes ages to clear the steam after showering and bathing. But we've never had mold or mildew in these spaces because we always open the window after bathing, and leave it open till the steam clears.'

Punteha and her household do this year round, and find it takes between 15-30 minutes to clear the humidity. 'Afterwards, we close the windows to make sure the heating doesn't go to waste in the winter and cooler months.

'Sizing should take into consideration both indoor and outdoor humidity levels, square footage of the space, individual preferences, and fresh air infiltration (how tightly the home is sealed).’

The exact time it will take will change depending on five factors:

1. The size of the room

Glenn Wisemen, sales manager at Top Hat Home Comfort Services says, ‘The size of the room is a big factor because larger spaces naturally take longer to dry out.’

One of the key things you need to know before buying a dehumidifier is the size of the room you need to dry out. The square footage will dictate the size and capacity of the dehumidifier you need. An open-plan space, for example, will take a lot longer to dry out than a small bedroom.

• Small rooms (up to 400 sq ft) need a compact dehumidifier that holds around 1.5 gallons of water.
• Medium rooms (400-1,000 sq ft) need a dehumidifier that holds one to three gallons of water.
• Large rooms (over 1,000 sq ft) need a more robust dehumidifier that holds more than three gallons of water.
• To work out the approximate square footage of a room, multiply the length of your room by the width. Keep in mind for very damp spaces, you may need a bigger dehumidifier.

George Crew, contractor, adds, ‘Room temperature also affects how well the heater works. Illustrators work best in hot weather. If you are working in a small and slightly humid area, you will need a high-density model. For large or consistently wet areas, look for higher-end models with features like an integrated pump for continuous water collection.

‘You should also consider features such as automatic shut-off [so the dehumidifier will turn off after an allotted time, or when it hits the best humidity level for a home] adjustable humidity, and energy efficiency ratings to ensure effective use and long-term efficiency of the dehumidifier, especially if you are looking for ways to save money at home.’

I'm H&G's home tech editor and I regularly test appliances like dehumidifiers and purifiers, but I also caught up with a couple of veteran HVAC experts to find out the key things to know before buying a dehumidifier.

Things I wish I knew before buying a dehumidifier

Once you get to grips with the following to work out how long it will take a dehumidifier to dry out a room, you'll easily find the right dehumidifier for your home and to best suits your needs.

1. There are different types

The most popular dehumidifier you'll find is a compressor one, which essentially uses condensation to remove humidity from the air. It has coils, which are cooled for the warm, moist air to condense against.

Another common dehumidifier type is a desiccant dehumidifier. Instead of condensing the moisture, a desiccant dehumidifier absorbs the moisture using a wheel that acts similarly to an extractor fan or sponge. A heater and fan work consistently to regenerate this element for continued use.

The main difference here comes down to where you place your dehumidifier and when you're using it. Compressor dehumidifiers work best in warm environments as the coils work less efficiently in cooler temps (60°F or less). Desiccant dehumidifiers work year-round and tend to be lighter and quieter, but don't typically have the high extraction rates of compressor dehumidifiers.

So, desiccants are ideal for colder rooms like basements, while compressors are better for inside the home. Desiccant dehumidifiers can also release warmer air into the room, helping to further dry those cold, wet areas.

You can also find non-electric dehumidifiers. They aren't nearly as effective but they can provide affordable, small-scale dehumidifying if you don't need as much power. I use one in my car for example, and it removes overnight moisture so that the windows are clear in the morning.

2. Get the right size

Like the best air purifiers, a dehumidifier's size dictates how much indoor space it can cover. You'll also want to consider its capacity, too; as most dehumidifiers need to be emptied manually, the bigger the tank is, the less often you have to empty it. This will also affect how many dehumidifiers you need for your space.

'Choosing the wrong size can frustrate you if the unit can't keep up with the moisture in your space,' says Josh Mitchell, seasoned HVAC technician from Air Conditioner Lab.

Josh adds that dehumidifiers are usually measured in 'pints per day' – measuring how much water it can remove from the air over time. 'A small 20-pint model works well for bedrooms or closets, but larger spaces like basements need at least a 50-pint unit,' Josh advises.

3. You don't have to drain it yourself

As a dehumidifier turns the moisture in the air into liquid in a water tank, it needs to be emptied. Usually this is something you'll do whenever it gets full (and most dehumidifiers will stop operating once the tank is full), but there are models with self-draining systems. If you think your dehumidifier's going to get a lot of use, it's worth considering so you can set it and forget it.

'If you don't want to empty the water tank daily, choose a model with a built-in pump or continuous drain option,' explains Josh.

A continuous drain setting works by attaching a hose from the dehumidifier to a drain, then gravity does the work. But if you invest in a dehumidifier with a pump, it will automatically drain the water once it reaches a certain level, and can empty it vertically or horizontally.

If you have a floor drain or low access to a water outlet, a dehumidifier with continuous drain is all you need. If not, spend a bit extra for a self-draining pump. It'll make all the difference.

4. Humidity settings help

What a dehumidifier does is remove moisture from the air. But not all dehumidifiers have an accurate humidistat to be able to reach a desired relative humidity (RH), 'between 30% and 50% is ideal for comfort', according to HVAC pro Josh Mitchell.

'When the air in a home is too dry, it typically contains more irritants and pathogens, which are better to avoid for people with respiratory diseases, particularly allergies,' explains Glenn Gault, CEO of Gault Heating & Cooling.

Too humid air is a favorable environment for mold and mildew growth, which is also bad, because mold and mildew are serious allergens.'

A dehumidifier without humidity control can easily leave the room either too dry or too humid, so it's worth opting for one with more control, even it costs a little extra.

5. Think about noise and energy levels

You might start getting annoyed at your choice if your dehumidifier is constantly disturbing your sleep, work or relaxation time due to its noise level when operating.

'Most dehumidifiers, especially larger ones, emit a noticeable hum,' says Josh. 'Check the decibel rating if you place it in a living area or bedroom. Anything below 50 dB is relatively quiet.'

A dehumidifier, like any electrical appliance, will also cost you to keep running. Over time, the energy efficiency of your unit will influence how much you're paying in bills, so it's a smart move to choose one that's efficient, even if the initial outlay is more.

'Dehumidifiers can be energy-intensive if used regularly,' Josh Mitchell adds, so it's important to look for those with an ENERGY STAR rating.

6. Extra features make a difference

This is strong advice when buying any long-term appliance, but read into what extra features are available, to see if they're worth the spend by making your life easier.

An example would be air purification, so instead of having both a dehumidifier and air purifier, you can choose a dehumidifier that does both, saving floor space and the cost of another unit. Look for ones with HEPA filters for effective air purification.

Living in an old house comes with lots of benefits – bags of charm and character included – but there are also some less welcome aspects.

'Yes, using a dehumidifier can help reduce condensation on windows, but it’s effective mainly when paired with other methods,' confirms Jon Gilbertson, president and CEO at Chris Heating & Cooling. 'Consider combining a dehumidifier with a humidity-absorbing window film or moisture-wicking window treatments,' continues Jon. 'These specialized products are designed to work with the dehumidifier, capturing excess moisture directly on the window surfaces while the dehumidifier maintains lower room humidity levels. This dual setup can create a more balanced moisture control system, focusing both on the air and window surfaces.

'Since condensation forms due to temperature differences, insulating windows with thermal curtains or adding an insulating film can also help prevent those chilly surfaces that attract moisture, complementing the dehumidifier's effect.'

How much better is our window condensation using the dehumidifier?

I have to admit, I was a little skeptical that anything was going to help with our window condensation – but how wrong I was.

I am not saying there are never any traces of moisture on our windows when we use the dehumidifier, but the condensation problem is far more under control. In the instances where a little condensation still shows up, it tends to have been a very cold night and we do sometimes use the radiators in our bedroom to dry laundry which definitely makes things worse as the clothing's moisture rises into the air and eventually cools down on our windows.

Overall though, I wouldn't be without our trusty dehumidifier and highly recommend you give one a go if condensation is troubling your home.

'Swap out the charcoal every two to four weeks, depending on the humidity level,' recommends Mitchell. 'When the charcoal stops absorbing moisture, it's time for a replacement.

2. Silica gel

'Silica gel absorbs moisture and doesn't create messes like other methods,' he explains. 'It's also compact, and reusable, making it cost-effective for long-term use.'

To use silica gel, you can either save packets from product packaging, or buy silica gel in bulk. Then, using a breathable fabric pouch, such as the Tatuo 3 x 4 Inches Muslin Bags Cotton Drawstring Bags available at Amazon, small mesh bag, or open container, place silica gel packs in moisture-prone spaces.

'These might be closets, drawers, or storage bins,' adds Mitchell. 'For larger areas, use bulk silica gel in containers. When the gel becomes saturated (often indicated by a color change if it's a color-indicating type), dry it out in an oven at 200°F for one to two hours to restore its moisture-absorbing properties.'

You can also use silica gel to dry flowers, to preserve beautiful blooms. However, wherever you place yours, keep out of the reach of children and pets as they are not to be ingested.

3. Rock salt

You can make a DIY dehumidifier using rock salt, says Steve Pacholski, brand president of Varsity Zone HVAC, who uses this cheap salt trick to get rid of condensation.

'Rock salt is a great option for larger spaces,' he suggests. 'Just grab a container like a bowl or bucket, fill it with rock salt (such as the Mutual Industries Rock Salt available at Walmart) and place it in a damp area, such as a basement or bathroom.

'Rock salt naturally pulls moisture from the air, and, over time, will start to clump as it absorbs water. You'll want to check on it regularly and either replace the salt, or dry it out in the oven on a low setting to reuse it.'

4. Baking soda

You may know about cleaning with baking soda, or how to use baking soda in laundry, but did you know it makes a great DIY dehumidifier, too?

HVAC expert Mitchell explains, 'Baking soda absorbs moisture and odors, making it ideal for smaller spaces with mild humidity issues. It's inexpensive, easy to find, and doubles as an air freshener,' to make your home smell nice.

To use baking soda, such as the Great Value Baking Soda available at Walmart, use a shallow, open containers such as a bowl, tray or baking dish, and pour a thin layer (about one to two cups) into the container, says Mitchell. 'The container should be placed in closets, bathrooms, or other small places where moisture is a problem,' adds Mitchell. 'Stir the baking soda every few days to keep it practical. Replace it entirely when it becomes clumpy, typically every one to two weeks.'

The most recent leak was on the tail of a particularly tricky few days, and truly the last thing my household needed. That's why I threw everything my plumber told me to do at the stain to dry the water leak out ASAP and avoid the dreaded curse of mold.

How to dry a ceiling leak quickly

Ceiling leaks bring with it a host of problems. Besides the obvious inconvenience of water drips and stains, the damp creates the perfect environment for mold, mildew and can compromise the integrity of your wall plaster and insulation if not dealt with quickly.

My leak happened very suddenly last week and turned out to be a broken washer on the toilet in the en suite bathroom above our kitchen. Once our plumber had fixed the ceiling leak, I asked him how best to dry the wall out as the plaster had turned chalky from the moisture and the last thing I want in my kitchen is mold.

He told me to ideally use his 'magic trio', which includes air movement, heating and dehumidifying. I set to work as soon as he left.

What I did to dry a ceiling leak in three days

I did not have a dehumidifier so I went onto Amazon and ordered one to arrive next day using my Prime membership. I live in the UK and went for a budget-friendly, small, 1800 ml dehumidifier with a 5/5 star customer rating, a timer and and auto shut-off function, much like the highly-rated and popular BREEZOME 60 OZ Dehumidifier on Amazon in the US.

In the mean time, in the first 24 hours after the ceiling leak in my home, I opened the two radiators in my kitchen, one of which is directly under the leak, and the other perpendicular to it, and set the heating to run at 23° Centigrade, which is 73.4 Fahrenheit. This is as warm as my family and I can tolerate it to run but the hotter you can bear it, the better, my plumber said.

Sydney Archer of Kiser Renovations has over 20 years water damage experience and agrees, adding, 'If you don’t have a dehumidifier or other industrial drying equipment and have not called for professional water mitigation services, set up every fan you have to start drying out the space.'

Sydney warns failure to dry out the space can lead to mold growth in as little as 24-28 hours.

I also kept the kitchen doors and windows closed to stop the heat immediately escaping. I moved my Pelonis tower fan from Amazon onto the dining table and pointed it at the area that was wet. The height of the tower fan helped keep air moving to, and moisture away from the damp patch, and improved ventilation.

As we often dry our laundry in a small space on drying racks in the kitchen-diner, I felt the humidity every time I went into the room. But, until the dehumidifier arrived, I simply opened up the kitchen door for five-minute bursts to reduce the humidity of the space every few hours. It was enough to drop the saturation levels somewhat, without letting all that heat out as in the UK, the temperature was just above freezing when the leak happened.

Sydney adds, 'You should also open all of your windows to help get air moving through the house. Any furniture or other belongings that have water damage should be removed from the house. Some of these items may be able to be saved through professional cleaning services while others may have to be thrown away.’

Once my new dehumidifier arrived, it took just a couple of minutes to set up and I put it on a 24-hour timer. It collected around 10 ml of water an hour from the room and the difference in humidity was palpable.

How this combination worked to dry my ceiling

I was thrilled to feel a noticeable difference from the heating and fan combination in the first 24 hours, but it was when my new best dehumidifier was added to the mix that it really turbocharged the drying out.

Now after 72 hours, the plaster is dry to the touch and I am no longer concerned about the risk of mold, or painting over it soon. Just to be safe, I'm giving it another week of this magic combo to ensure the internal areas have dried too and won't seep through to the surface, as I am planning on using a washable wall paint to go over the water mark and don't want to lock in moisture unwittingly.

That includes some smart features, as well as some dumb but crucially necessary ones like the continuous drain option.

Though it’s not perfect – it’s fairly heavy to move around and is on the pricey side – and your mileage may vary if you don’t find the best place to put a dehumidifier, the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi gets a hearty recommendation from this reviewer, particularly after having to use it in an unfinished basement with a minor leak (but more on that later).

The Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi, while appropriately priced, is on the pricier side of the dehumidifier market, retailing currently for $349, whether you get it direct from Frigidaire, or from Home Depot or Amazon. Lowe’s has it listed a bit higher at $380.

Considering that one of our favorite dehumidifiers, the GE 50-Pint Portable Dehumidifier, goes for $269.99, and you can get a decent sized one for as low as $150 (cheaper ones are generally much smaller), the price of the Frigidaire reviewed here might feel like it’s not worth it. However, if you like all the smart features on offer, such as controlling the unit from your phone, it’s worth the extra cash.

The Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi is basically plug-and-play. Since it weighs 42 pounds (19 kg), the hardest part is pulling it out of the box. Beyond that, you just need to remove it from the protective plastic and plug in the power cable. There’s really nothing else you have to do to start dehumidifying other than turning it on and picking the mode (quiet or dry) and fan speed (low, medium, high).

There is a little more to the setup, however, as this dehumidifier, as the name suggests, comes with WiFi capabilities, meaning it supports an app. Luckily, setting the app up is painless. Just download the app from the appropriate mobile store, open it and follow the instructions, which mostly consist of pressing the WiFi button on the Frigidaire and connecting it to your WiFi network (so have your username and password ready).

The Frigidaire comes in an attractive and somewhat discreet all-white colorway. Its “Gallery” designation somewhat differentiates it from the rest of Frigidaire’s line that have a black top, which stands out a bit more. It’s good that it’s designed to not stick out too much as it is pretty big. As mentioned previously, it weighs 42 pounds (19 kg). It’s also 24 ¾ inches tall (and 16 inches wide with a depth of 12 ¼ inches).

Even though it’s big, Frigidaire was thoughtful enough to include a retractable handlebar on top for relatively easy transportation (you still have to carry 42 lbs). Since there are no handles on the side, it’s tough to enlist a second person to carry this if you need to move it and find 42 lbs hard to pick up. I should mention that there are caster wheels to roll it around.

As far as controls go, they’re all lined up along the top and are fairly responsive to use. From left to right, there’s a mode select button where you choose between auto, quiet and dry mode (with a range of 48 and 52 dB volume-wise), Filter reset button, Timer, an LED display indicating if target humidity has been reached, Fan Speed button with three settings to cycle through, a power button, and a WiFi button to enable connecting to the app. While there’s some more functionality in the app, everything you need is basically on the unit except for turning on the ionizer.

Also of note is an LED indicator on the front that will let you know when the bucket is full, an easy access panel on the back with a washable dust filter, a front-loaded 2.1 liter bucket, and a drain for continuous use so you don’t have to keep emptying it manually.

Though you could look at the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi’s 50 pints a day removal as a reliable benchmark, not to mention that it’s on par with other dehumidifiers that we’ve recommended, real world usage and testing is key. Luckily, I had a couple different basements, usually one of the most critical places in a house to keep dry, to test in.

Regardless of where I used it, it filled up fairly quickly requiring fairly regular emptying (just a reminder that there is a drain for use with a sump pump). One of the basements that I used it in had actually just suffered a leak from a water meter. Almost that entire corner was steeped in an inch of water. After sucking most of the water up with a wet vac, I used the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi to dry out the basement. 

It took just a day for the ground to dry out thanks to the dehumidifier. Even after, I kept it running in dry mode and its 2.1 liter bucket was a quarter full after just six hours of use. Basically, its dehumidifying performance is fantastic. And, even on its highest mode, it doesn’t get too loud (52 dB from five feet away, 68 dB if you’re right next to it).

Using the app is about as easy as everything else with this dehumidifier. All the information and controls are on one page with an additional menu page with instructions and ways to contact Frigidaire. There’s not much to say other than it’s minimalist, straightforward, and it's the only way to turn the ionizer on or off, or schedule the dehumidifier to work at certain times during the day.

Because of the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi’s excellent and efficient performance, if you’re using it in a particularly high humidity environment, you’re going to have to empty it very, very regularly. While that’s not a bad thing – that’s the job it’s supposed to do – you better be prepared to pick up and empty a 2.1 liter bucket on a daily or almost daily basis. Luckily, pulling it out to empty is easy, it’s just a bit heavy. Emptying it is just as easy as you just need to tip it over wherever you need to empty it.

Accessing the dust filter is pretty straightforward as well, since there’s a panel on the back of the unit that pops right out that also holds that filter. Once out, the filter comes right out for a quick rinse.

Since it is heavy, it’s more than likely that the outside might get scuffed up when moving it from room to room. Luckily, since it’s encased in a fairly durable plastic, it’s hard to permanently dent it, and any scuffs are easily rubbed out.

How does the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi compare?

There’s no doubt about it, the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi is expensive when it comes to the world of dehumidifiers. The GE ADEL50LZ 50-Pint Dehumidifier, for instance, tops our best humidifier list and retails for $269.99 at Amazon and $268.02 at The Home Depot. Whether you’re willing to spend the extra $100 on the Frigidaire depends on how useful you’ll find having the smart features, whether it’s app access for turning on the ionizer or being able to use it with Alexa or Google Home.

A better comparison might be the LG PuriCare UD501KOG5 50-Pint Dehumidifier, which retails for a similar $383.27 at Walmart or $429 direct from LG, and also comes with app support, though it doesn’t seem to support smart home integration.

If you have a smaller space, you can certainly spend much less. Even Frigidaire offers the Frigidaire 22 Pint Dehumidifier for $199.

While you can certainly spend less on a dehumidifier – and that’s probably the biggest issue here – the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi is worth the cost if you’re into having a good amount of features. In fact, other models with similar WiFi capabilities, like the LG mentioned above, are in a similar price range.

If you don’t care about controlling it via an app or Alexa, there are cheaper options that are still pretty good. However, the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi comes with other important features such as a drain to be used with a sump pump and an ionizer function. 

Regardless of how you feel about your needs feature-wise, the performance is as good as it should be with the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi. That’s to say that it does its job and it does it well. Additionally, using and operating it, not to mention maintaining it, is just as straightforward. Functionally, the only real issue is the weight, but at least there’s a retractable handle and caster wheels.

Overall, the Frigidaire Gallery 50 Pint Dehumidifier with WiFi is very easy to recommend if you’re not on a budget.

‘I think the grout lines in my bathroom are cleaner and whiter when I use a steam mop. I don’t even need to use cleaning products. I simply use steam, and when the grime, dirt, and soap scum lift, all I have to do is spray it with water and wipe it away.’

Can you paint a house in humidity?

Seth Miles at Groovy Hues Paint explains: 'When the humidity is high, the paint's protective qualities can be compromised. The extra moisture in the air can stop the paint from drying properly, which might cause it to dry slower, go on unevenly, or even start to blister or peel. 

'Too much moisture in the air can cause surfactant leaching, resulting in brown or white spots on the paint surface. When damp, moisture can get into the semi-dried paint film.'

In contrast, if the humidity is below 40%, painting is also not recommended since the paint needs more moisture. You can use these two mini hygrometers from Amazon to monitor humidity levels and plan your painting accordingly or to guide you in adjusting indoor humidity levels accordingly.

Tips for painting in high humidity

If you opt to paint your property, whether that be its interior or exterior when the humidity is not in the golden range of 40%-50%, employing these techniques can ensure the paint job is the most done effectively and successfully. Adopting these approaches minimizes the risk of having to redo an unsuccessful paint job or fix peeling paint, saving you time and effort in the long run.

1. Choose the right time

Where humidity has such a big impact on the end product of your paint job, this begs the question, when is the right time to paint? 

Humidity levels change depending on the time of the day, year, weather, and temperature. You can check the humidity in your area on a weather app or online before committing to your painting work.

'To get a good paint job, choose the right day when the humidity is under 60%,' says Seth Miles. 'Paint in the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late afternoon, when there's usually less humidity.'

You can also choose a day with higher winds to aid the paint in drying, which can contribute to mitigating some of the effects of the humidity – especially if you are painting outdoors this can be the best time to paint your home exterior.

2. Choose the right paint

If you paint a house in humid conditions, it's essential to choose the right type of paint formulated to withstand moisture and humidity. Opting for high-quality, moisture-resistant paint is crucial for achieving long-lasting results.

'We've found that using high-quality latex paints offers the best results in humid environments. These paints are less susceptible to moisture and dry faster than oil-based alternatives, making them more suitable for humid conditions,' explains Bob Berriz, creative director at Berriz Design. 

'It’s essential to choose paint products specifically formulated to resist humidity's effects, providing better coverage and longer-lasting finishes.'

3. Prepare the surface

'Proper surface preparation is another key factor when painting in humidity,' says Ryan Parr, the president and owner of Nashville Painting Professionals. 

'To prepare walls for painting, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of any moisture, dirt, or debris before applying paint. Using a primer designed for humid conditions can also help improve paint adhesion and durability.'

4. Work in sections

'Working in small sections and maintaining a wet edge while painting can help prevent the paint from drying too quickly or becoming tacky in humid environments,' says Ryan Parr.

5. Allow for drying time

Additionally, allowing for adequate drying time between coats is essential, and this will be longer than usual in high humidity. Be patient and follow the manufacturer's recommended drying times to ensure each coat of paint properly adheres and cures.

6. Improve ventilation and reduce humidity

On particularly humid days, proper ventilation is crucial when painting. Incorporate fans and open windows and doors to aid air circulation and promote faster drying of the paint.

Spring and summer welcomes the warmer weather into our lives. But for many - or around a third of adults in the US, according to the CDC - spring is the start of allergy season.

How to clean a dehumidifier 

'A dehumidifier helps regulate the humidity of a room by maintaining and controlling the air present in the area. It is made up of different parts that should be cleaned regularly so that the dehumidifier can work properly and effectively,' explains Rocky Vuong, cleaning expert and Founder of Calibre Cleaning.

Specialized cleaning products aren't usually required when cleaning a dehumidifier. Simple household items, including mild detergent, water, a sponge, a brush, a cloth, and a vacuum cleaner should be sufficient for regular maintenance. If mold or mildew is present, you can also use vinegar to kill mold and remove contaminants more effectively.

1. Prepare the dehumidifier

Before cleaning, always unplug your dehumidifier from the power source and allow it to cool down. Then, carefully disassemble the unit according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Clean the filter

The air filter is an important component of a dehumidifier, responsible for trapping dust particles and other impurities in the air. Over time, these filters can become clogged with dirt and debris, ultimately affecting the efficiency of your dehumidifier. 

There are various types of dehumidifier filters depending on the model you have, including reusable, washable, built-in, and disposable filters. These might have distinct maintenance needs and cleaning requirements, so before cleaning, check which type of filter your dehumidifier has. Then, remove and clean the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. 

In most cases, you can gently vacuum the filter to get rid of all the dirt and dust.  Some filters can then be rinsed or washed with warm water and a mild detergent. Allow the filter to dry completely before reinserting it into the unit.

As well as cleaning your dehumidifier regularly, you should also know how often to change a dehumidifier filter to keep it running efficiently. This will depend on how much you use it, indoor humidity levels, air quality, and the filter type. 

3. Clean the water tank

'The tank gathers all the water that is extracted from the air,' explains Rocky Vuong. 'Because of this, it's likely that mold or mineral deposits might have accumulated in this section if not cleaned regularly.' So, be sure to clean and sanitize the tank about once a week to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

To do this, drain the tank and clean it using a sponge with mild detergent and water. Be sure to reach into crevices and corners to remove any mold, dirt, and bacteria completely. There are ways to reuse dehumidifier water, so collect it in a jug or bowl rather than pouring it down the sink.

After cleaning, you can spray the tank with a vinegar and water mixture to sanitize it. Let it sit for a minute until it dries, then thoroughly rinse the tank with water to remove any vinegar residue.

4. Vacuum the air intake and exhaust grills

'Dust can accumulate on the air intake and exhaust grills, affecting the unit's efficiency,' explains HVAC technician and the owner of Air Conditioner Lab, Josh Mitchell. 'Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently remove dust from these areas.'

5. Check and clean the coils and fins

The coils and fins of the evaporator and condenser are another essential part of a dehumidifier, responsible for removing moisture from the air. Over time, these can become coated with dust and dirt, reducing their effectiveness. 

'To clean the coils and fins, you can either use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner that has a brush attachment,' advises Polya Petrova, a cleaning professional at Fantastic Services. 'During the cleaning process, be careful not to bend or damage the delicate fins.'

6. Wipe down the exterior

While cleaning the inner workings of your dehumidifier is vital, don't forget about the exterior!

If you have access to a fan or blower, this will also help to dry out wet items faster by maintaining dry air flow.’

2. Ensure smaller items have sufficient air circulation

Air circulation is a must after water damage, especially when it comes to fabric items. Rather than leaving things such as cushions, towels, pillows, and blankets in place, Muffetta Krueger, cleaning expert and owner of Muffetta's Domestic Assistants recommends hoisting them up onto drying racks, trying heated airers or line drying them outside on warmer days to help speed up the drying process. 

‘Doing this helps promote air circulation to speed up drying times and prevent sitting water,' Muffetta says. ‘This technique is particularly useful for preventing water stains too,’ she adds.

3. Remove the excess water with a wet vac

Wet-dry vacuums are essential if you are looking to save all of your soft furnishings, carpets, and upholstery, says Steve Leasure, VP of operations at Rainbow Restoration, a Neighborly Company.

‘Whether you own or rent a wet/dry vac, use it to clean up as much water as possible and remove carpet cushions and rugs ASAP,’ he says. ‘In dire cases, I recommend calling a professional water restoration company that has been certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification), as they will be able to get the job done quicker and more thoroughly.’

Even when stuck in a pinch, don't use your best vacuum cleaner for this job, especially if the manufacturer does not explicitly say it is safe for liquids, as this is likely to cause a bigger headache for you.  

4. Blot soft furnishings to remove excess water

If you don’t have a wet vac or are waiting for one to arrive, then a quick immediate action you can take is to blot excess water out of furnishings with a dry absorbent towel, Jeremy Lesher, co-owner and product manager at Bluegrass Foundation Repair recommends. 

‘If the furniture gets wet, quickly blot the excess moisture with absorbent towels or paper towels. Allow the furniture to air-dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct heat sources that could cause warping or cracking,’ Jeremy says.

‘For soft items like cushions and pillows, remove the covers and wash them as recommended before making use of your tumble dryer where possible. If you can’t machine dry, blot any moisture, and use a fan to expedite drying.’

Jeremy recommends using microfiber towels, such as this multipack from Amazon, for this job, as they are highly absorbent and gentle on surfaces, making them ideal for blotting excess moisture from various items without causing damage. 

5. Use fans sparingly

Fans are usually recommended to help improve air circulation after waterlogging, but they could be spreading mold spores around your property if you don't use them carefully, Steve Leasure, VP of operations, warns us.

‘If the leak is fresh and the carpet doesn’t already smell musty, use a dehumidifier or a fan to prevent the buildup of humidity. However, if you suspect mold is already growing, don’t use a fan. It could spread mold spores around your house through the HVAC system, making your problem worse.’

6. Rely on air drying for smaller items

To save time and energy when drying things around your home, designate some items to be left to air dry, preferably in a room or area that has not suffered flooding and may have damp or humid air, says Jeremy Lesher, of Bluegrass Foundation Repair

‘Delicate decor items like ceramic figurines, glassware, and wooden decorations can often be air-dried. Place them on a clean, absorbent surface in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, turning them periodically to ensure even drying.’

‘After cleaning an area rug, this can also be hung over a clothesline or railing in a shaded area,’ he adds. ‘Gently beat or shake the carpet to remove excess moisture, then let it air-dry completely. To speed up drying, use a fan to improve airflow.’

7. Get rid of large carpets subject to flood water

Some items, such as large areas of carpet, may be past the point of repair if they have been used to moving flood water from outside the home, Steve Leasure, VP of operations laments. It is therefore better to remove them altogether rather than spend the time drying them and risk exposing your home to contaminants or dangerous mold. 

‘It cannot be salvaged if carpet and carpet cushions are exposed to flood water. It must be removed and disposed of. As flood waters move across the ground, it picks up all kinds of contaminants such as fertilizers, fecal matter, and other contaminants. It is not possible to clean and sanitize carpet and cushion after it has been contaminated with flood water. They should reach out to an expert as soon as possible.’

It may seem unnatural at first, but opening the door even a little bit could help you to sleep better, and keep your bedroom environment more hygienic according to sleep experts. It is certainly one of the simplest ways to improve sleep that we have come across. 

Here, sleep specialists have explained why we should all be opening the door to a new sleeping situation, and how it could positively impact our sleep.

Sleeping with the bedroom door open

While you may have considered different ways to make your bedroom better for sleep – by adding decor and super soft bedding, leaving the door ajar is rarely considered – even though studies have shown it can have a profound impact on our nightly habits. 

However, Hafiz Shariff, sleep expert and founder of premium bedding company Owl + Lark suggests that sleeping with the door open can improve air circulation and temperature regulation – especially if you do not have a dehumidifier or air purifier in your bedroom to clean the air.

‘Leaving the door open allows fresh air to enter the room and dust particles can leave,’ he begins, ‘this means you won’t be inhaling them overnight, resulting in healthier breathing patterns and feeling more refreshed when you wake up. 

'I’d always recommend leaving the door open while sleeping to people suffering from insomnia, night terrors, or hot weather,’ he adds. Keeping air flowing is also important to prevent moisture build up in your bedroom which, in the right conditions, could potentially lead to the growth of mold. 

Whether you have a dehumidifier, or leave the window or door open, it is important to keep this space free from spores to maintain good health and it's also worth knowing how to get rid of black mold if it arises.

As for temperature, especially in summer, leaving the door open can help to keep you cool if you do not have the best fan, or one quiet enough to sleep with. ‘Having better airflow from the door being left open can help your bedroom have a more even temperature with the rest of the house/apartment, allowing your thermostat to respond and keep you cool for good quality sleep,’ explains Dr. Jade Wu, PhD, and Mattress Firm’s sleep health expert. 

It is important to remember, however, that everyone’s sleep habits and preferences are different, Dr. Wu continues, and what works for one person may not work for another.

‘If someone struggles to get a good night’s rest, they should speak with a doctor about potential solutions that may help improve their sleep,’ she concludes.

That being said, sleeping with the bedroom door open is not for everyone. For instance, having the door closed can help to improve feelings of security, points out Lauri Leadley, clinical sleep educator and founder of Valley Sleep Center. ‘Closing your bedroom door at night offers some privacy and creates a peaceful sleeping environment. It can help to reduce noise and block out distractions from other areas of the house, such as the kitchen or living room,’ she explains. 

What’s more, it can offer an important safety feature in that it can block the spread of night fires, she adds. ‘Sleeping with your bedroom door closed also helps to prevent the spread of fire by blocking the flow of air and smoke. If a fire starts in your home while you are sleeping, a closed door can help to contain the flames and give you more time to escape.’

If distractions elsewhere in the home and fire risks are a concern for you, then it may be worth opening up windows every night instead.

Does a dehumidifier make a room cooler?  

There's no straightforward answer to this. John Carey, appliance expert and vice-president at Designer Appliances, explains that a dehumidifier does not actually cool down a room like an air conditioning unit does. Instead, it takes in excess moisture to lower humidity and make the space more comfortable. This ‘certainly makes it feel cooler,’ he says, 'but it doesn't actually do anything to lower the temperature.'

The reason a dehumidifier can feel like a great way to cool down a room, is because it helps create an environment where our sweat evaporates more quickly, relieving our skin of the ‘clammy’ sensation we often associate with summer and making us feel cool, continues Tony Abate, certified indoor environmentalist, and chief technology officer at Atmos Air Solutions. 

Because of this, a dehumidifier is a great companion to use alongside cooling a room with fans or air conditioning, and keeping external doors and windows closed for the best results. A combination of both will lead to a much more comfortable summer. 

There are two types of dehumidifiers to choose from, and while neither one ‘cools’ a room any better than the other, one does not produce any heat while running. This makes it slightly more efficient when trying to cool a room in a heatwave, adds Trey Lewis, appliance expert at HVAC Training Shop. 

‘There is a type of dehumidifier called a desiccant dehumidifier that does not produce any heat,’ he says. ‘Desiccant dehumidifiers are capable of dehumidifying to a much greater extent than a standard refrigerant dehumidifier, however, they don’t actually cool a room, except for the "cooling" effect.’

The most common options allergy sufferers opt for are air purifiers and humidifiers, but which is the best for combatting allergens in the home? Experts suggest they both have their benefits, but one may be better than the other for keeping comfortable.

Is an air purifier or humidifier better for allergies?  

Out of the two appliances, it is hard to argue against the overall benefits of an air purifier for alleviating allergy symptoms. After all, prevention is always better than the cure, says Dr. Sima Patel, allergist and immunologist at New York Allergy and Sinus Centers. 

While it is difficult to completely avoid allergens, an air purifier is the best first line of defense if you want to keep allergies at bay, she explains. Following cleaning tips for allergy sufferers such as using a HEPA vacuum cleaner will also go a long way in preventing sneezing fits and irritation.

‘Air purifiers work by passing air through a filter that cleans it, and then blows it back out. Air purifiers with HEPA filters are particularly effective in filtering out particulates/allergens in the air, including dust mites, pollens, animal dander, and molds making them perfect if you need to combat hay fever and aid sleep.’

As a result, a good air purifier is essential for any allergy sufferer – just remember that the filters need to be cleaned or replaced to ensure their effectiveness, Dr. Patel adds, and that any device with a HEPA filter will be more efficient than those without. Buying the right size and specs is vital if you want to feel the benefit. 

That being said, having an air purifier doesn't mean that allergy sufferers won't also benefit from a humidifier, adds Dr. Cliff Han, founder, and allergen expert at Allerpops. ‘Dry air can be irritating to airways and make allergy symptoms worse, especially when one has to breathe through a mouth with a congested nose,’ he says. ‘A humidifier can help to moisturize the air and reduce the irritation – although to a limited degree.’

An important caveat to note about humidifiers for allergy symptoms, however, is the importance of cleaning your humidifier properly and regularly to prevent pumping more irritants into the air. 

Dr. Patel says that ‘if they are not cleaned often enough, or if you do not use distilled water, mold can develop which can trigger symptoms in those with mold allergies. Humidifiers are also not ideal for those with dust mite allergies as dust mites thrive in moist and humid environments, so it is really only beneficial to a subsection of allergy sufferers, and to help aid in alleviating symptoms after they have developed – not preventing them.'

A silverfish is a most unwelcome visitor when we are reclining in a hot bath or simply visiting the bathroom, but the good news is they are relatively easy to get rid of.

Areas that have had particularly wet weather recently, such as San Francisco, have seen an increase in these common pests, which enjoy the dark and damp conditions of our basements, bathrooms and attics.

Once you've spotted signs of a silverfish infestation, these are five steps to eradicate them, preventing damage to items like books and clothing.

How to get rid of silverfish quickly

Much like with getting rid of mice, if you see one, there are probably more of these little creatures knocking around, so it's a good idea to take measures to remove them as soon as you spot one. 'It is important to know that they don't like the light or being out in the open, so if you see one you can assume there is a much bigger problem hiding somewhere in the house,' says Matt Smith, a pest control professional.

Outside, these creatures tend to live under tree bark, preferring dark and damp areas. They are nocturnal and active throughout the year, and make their way into our homes through crevices and pipes.

Home organizing and cleaning will go a long way in preventing them, but here are a handful of options to try right away.

1. Use silverfish baits and sprays

'The fastest way, we have found, to get rid of silverfish is to use baits along with sprays,' shares pest control professional Matt Smith of Green Pest Management. 'The bait we use contains Borax, along with a spray that the silverfish are known to frequent. Using this combination cuts down the population very quickly.'

So if you want to get rid of them as soon as possible, pick up baits, at Amazon and silverfish sprays at Walmart and use both. Sprinkling a small amount of Borax – or diatomaceous earth, at Walmart – in the affected area will also help. You can also make a newspaper silverfish trap, too.

2. Deter with lavender

If you'd rather try a natural remedy first, add lavender essential oils, at Amazon into cleaning sprays, or dab onto cotton wool and place in the area you have seen silverfish coming from.

You could also use lavender sachets, but this may be less practical in moist areas. These pests also dislike citrus scents and cedar, so lemon juice and cedar oil are two other good, natural options with the added benefit of making your home smell nice.

3. Use a dehumidifier

The best dehumidifiers on the market are not only brilliant for reducing mold and mildew, but they will also deter silverfish. 'Another way to prevent these pests is to have a dehumidifier. Silverfish need moisture – they love damp dark areas, and they thrive in humid parts of the country,' says Matt Smith.

4. Keep the area clean

Silverfish are fairly common pests so there is no judgment here, but following everyday cleaning tips in your bathroom, basement or attic will prevent them from coming back. Paulo Filho, a cleaning professional and owner of Celestial Cleaning Service says that regular cleaning will significantly reduce the likelihood of a silverfish infestation in your home.

'If the problem persists or becomes severe, it's best to consult a professional pest control service for complete eradication,' he says.

5. Keep rooms well-ventilated

Another way to deter these bristletails is to keep the space well-ventilated, opening windows and letting natural light in. Leave the bathroom door or window open after using the shower or bath to encourage airflow, so you don't have to take measures to get rid of black mold build-up caused by damp conditions later down the line. Avoid leaving damp towels around in areas where they will not get dry.

Other preventative measures include fixing leaks and generally keeping rooms free of clutter.

When I bought my dehumidifier I thought it would be as simple as turning the machine on and letting it run for a few hours before all my problems were solved. Unfortunately, however, I learned that it is not always that simple – especially when I want my machine to run as efficiently as possible.

It turns out that even the best dehumidifier needs some setup and trial and error to get it working at its best, especially as each home is so different. Who knew that angling the machine the right way could greatly affect how quickly my thick jumpers would dry? Certainly not me.

Here, I share the nine dehumidifier mistakes I have made since owning my machine that you can learn from them too.

1. Facing my dehumidifier the wrong way

I was learning how to dry clothes quickly indoors when I first stumbled across dehumidifiers so, naturally, when I finally spent the money for a large machine I started putting my new dehumidifier beside my heated airer to help dry my clothes. However, it turns out that this is not the best way of drying them after all.

I saw a tip on TikTok to place my dehumidifier beneath my airer so that the new dry air would blow across my clothes – one of the more surprising uses for a dehumidifier. Given that almost all dehumidifiers work by pumping the drier air from the top of the machine, this way it is a great universal trick for getting your laundry dry quickly – especially in winter.

What's more, I find that this method helps distribute the lovely smell of freshly washed linen around my home too.

2. Forgetting to clean the filter

Given that my new dehumidifier was nothing like the best air purifier and did not clean the air in my home, it never crossed my mind to clean out the filter. It turns out that even though it is not its main function, my dehumidifier was catching some of the hair and dust floating through the air after all.

Forgetting to clean my dehumidifier filter meant that my machine was not working as well as it should as the clogged up over time. Luckily, I found it easy to clear out the filter with a dampened microfibre cloth from Amazon in just a few minutes.

3. Opening windows and internal doors

Does a dehumidifier work with windows open? Well, I knew that opening up windows and doors helps to freshen up the air in a home, so I made the mistake of assuming it would help my dehumidifier do its job – given that this point is featured in a list of my dehumidifier mistakes you would be correct in assuming I was wrong in this.

In fact, enclosing the dehumidifier into one space at a time, with all windows, and external, and internal doors closed allows the machine to work more efficiently as it is not trying to dry out more air. What's more, leaving a window or door open just draws more moisture in, which can affect how many dehumidifiers you need, and is the complete opposite of what I needed. Doing this also meant that the time I spent working out how much it costs to run a dehumidifier was pointless, as I was not running my machine as efficiently as I was supposed to, wasting energy and money – a mistake I am not looking to make again.

4. Putting it in the wrong place in my house

While I quickly fixed the orientation of my dehumidifier for drying my clothes, finding the best spot for it around my house was far more difficult. I needed to find a space where the machine would benefit a few rooms at a time given that my house is very prone to humidity and condensation, while also making sure it would be efficient.

Originally I put my dehumidifier in my kitchen as the room is the coldest and often dampest in my house, but it turns out that this was an uphill battle. The constant use the space sees for cooking or making coffee meant that the machine was often working overtime – I need to find an alternative for that space I think.

I settled on a spot in my upstairs hallway, allowing my large machine (much like this one on Amazon) to dehumidify my bedrooms and home office ideas and get rid of condensation inside windows upstairs.

5. Not buying the right size machine

I admit that I played around with a smaller, cheaper dehumidifier model for a while before committing to buying a larger more expensive machine and it taught me that skimping on size is one of the biggest dehumidifier mistakes someone can make.

While a larger machine can be on the pricier side, my dehumidifier changed my home and my life, and I would never go back to multiple smaller machines again. There are a few things you should look for when buying a dehumidifier, I learned, including the dehumidifier's capacity (meaning the amount of water it can pull from the air each day rather than the amount the machine can hold before being emptied), a timer function and an electronic humidistat so that the machine will only run when the room's humidity is too high.

I found that a dehumidifier that is too small will never be sufficient enough to get your room down to the required humidity, so investing in the best machine for you the first time will save a lot of hassle and stress in the long run.

6. Putting it too close to other things like furniture and walls 

I liked to try and tuck my dehumidifier away at first, especially given that it is rather large and unsightly in comparison to the rest of my home décor. Because of this, one of my biggest dehumidifier mistakes was pushing my machine a little too close to walls and furniture in an attempt to make its presence a little less known (although this is hard given its volume).

Given that the machine pulls in air through the back, this was yet another move that made my dehumidifier less efficient and was not a great way of cutting energy bills. Moving my machine away from things and leaving the recommended eight-inch gap around each side allowed the machine to run more smoothly – and I guess I have to come to terms with its mildly irritating size with time.

7. Not considering how loud they are before buying one for the bedroom

My bedroom is certainly more prone to condensation and moisture than some of the other rooms in my home, especially considering I spend so much time in there with the door closed watching TV late at night. I thought that buying a dehumidifier would be a great solution, especially when so many market themselves as having a 'silent' function.

Unfortunately, no matter how many marketing ploys promise silent running, the nature of a dehumidifier means that the machine is always going to be loud (even on its quietest running mode). I learned very quickly that is not something I could sleep with turned on so instead I run the machine first thing in the morning when I get up for work and use a window vac to beat condensation on my windows.

If you're considering buying a dehumidifier for your bedroom at night, a large mechanical machine may not be for you.

8. Not setting the right humidity level

It turns out that I cannot simply turn on a dehumidifier and leave it be for hours on end, as much as that would make it easier. Instead, I had to learn what the best humidity level for my home was and program my dehumidifier to turn off once that level has been reached.

At first, I thought I wanted as much moisture to be removed from my house as possible, after all, one of the main reasons I bought my machine was to prevent and get rid of mold in my old house. As it turns out, a home with too low a humidity level is just as bad as a home with too high a humidity!

The optimal humidity is around 30–50%, with high humidity allowing the growth of mold and bacteria as well as the breeding of dust mites, and lower humidities leading to itchy eyes, dry skin, and other allergy-like flare-ups.

9. Not making an effort to fix sources of excessive moisture 

I was under the assumption that most of the moisture in my home was caused by things I was doing, such as cooking, taking hot showers, and even just breathing – but it turns out there were some more sinister things at play.

It turns out I had a few small leaks from old pipework that was increasing the humidity in my home, old concrete that had seeping groundwater, and a kitchen extractor fan that was not working as optimally as it could be. Fixing issues around the house like these substantially helped to reduce moisture alongside my dehumidifier, making it more efficient in the long run.

Not tackling these issues would have made my dehumidifier almost redundant as it would be fighting against constant sources of moisture to dry out my home.

Can you dehumidify too much?

There is a chance of dehumidifying your home too much with a dehumidifier, especially if you are leaving your dehumidifier running for several hours on a timer unattended. Over-dehumidifying your home can lead to an increased chance of respiratory illnesses and dry and cracked skin.

What percentage should your dehumidifier be set at?

Setting your dehumidifier to a set humidity level of between 30 and 50 per cent is often a better choice than setting your machine to a timer. A humidity below 30 can lead to illness, whereas a humidity above 50 or 60 creates the ideal breeding ground for dust mites and mold.

Many humidifiers can be set to turn off once a desired humidity has been reached. Learn whether you should run your dehumidifier at night or in the day.

I will be the first to admit that condensation is not the most exciting topic in the world – and before moving to my apartment, I never gave it a second thought. Sure, I had heard about dehumidifiers, but the strong desire to invest was never really there – until I found myself living alone. 

After a few months in a small apartment, the importance of condensation began to show, and (as sad as it is) I started thinking about mundane tasks, like how to get rid of condensation inside windows and how to get rid of black mold in my bathroom. The extent and effects of condensation were more significant than I'd ever cared to believe, and the need for one of the best humidifiers on the market was suddenly evident. 

It goes without saying that a humidifier is one of the most powerful ways to control condensation in a home, and it's a method that experts love. So, of course, if you're thinking of making the investment, I have no doubt that you will be satisfied with your purchase. However, in my case, I needed something smaller (to fit discreetly into my small apartment), and I needed something that was fairly instant. 

Using salt to get rid of condensation – what I learned in the process

After sharing my condensation woes with my father, he told me to consider using salt, at least as an experiment. Then, if it did not work, I would know I tried a 'smaller' alternative and pick up a dehumidifier with ease. 

To follow the teaching, I filled a small bowl with salt and placed it on the ledge of my windowsill. However, I have also heard that you can sprinkle a little salt on windows and doors before you go outside – if you prefer to try this method with a bowl. Then, I left the bowl untouched and went on with my day. 

Much of my routine involves condensation-heavy activities, such as showering in the bathroom that is close to my main living space – and using a bed sheet trick to dry clothes quickly without a dryer. Therefore, my space sees a lot of condensation. 

While there was still condensation in my bathroom after my shower, I noticed my windows were much less cloudy in my main living space – and I haven't noticed any sign of mold anywhere in my apartment. 

'Salt has adsorption properties, which means that it can bind to moisture and prevent it from developing condensation. This is why salt is often used in the kitchen to stop water droplets from forming on dishes or silverware,' explains homecare expert and archeologist Barry Gray from The Tool Square.  

In the discussion of the hack, Barry adds that salt is able to 'pull moisture out of the air, making rooms drier' and less damp. 'This can help to prevent damp and mold in a bedroom and other enclosed spaces like homes or offices,' the expert adds.

I avoid turning the heat too high (and I don't leave my home) to be sure it doesn't become a fire hazard, particularly when drying a duvet without a dryer. The clothes always dry at a lower temperature than I would normally keep my radiator at, anyway, so running heating at a high temperature is not necessary for success.

I did, in desperation, invest in the best dehumidifier I could afford some time back, and I keep that running nearby to ensure the moisture is removed from the air as the clothes dry. As I am navigating a small space, I need to do everything I can to negate the potential risks of drying clothes indoors, by getting rid of condensation inside windows to prevent mold (as I have already used bleach to kill mold once before), and the dehumidifier helps with this hugely. However, my friend has also tried this trick without a dehumidifier, so it's still possible to do so without one.

'Everyone likes a 2-in-1 hack, and drying your sheets in the kitchen is just that,' James says. 'The kitchen space tends to be the warmest part of the house as it’s where we cook, and there is plenty of footfall traffic. So, if you cook with the oven, you can often use the excess heat to dry your sheets in the room at the same time.

'Putting your drying rack next to the oven door will allow the excess heat to speed up the drying process,' the expert explains.
