It's one thing to renovate a dated property, but it's something else entirely to bring a derelict cottage back to life. But there's also something incredibly rewarding about rebuilding a lost piece of history, saving it from complete ruin and destruction.

For our Next in Design 2025 winner Tess MacGeachy, Founder of Amber Yard, it was a task she was ready to take on in this once-crumbling cottage on the Scottish coast. When the time came to reimagine the interiors, she had to navigate around compact proportions, most noticeably in the small cottage kitchen.

But with thoughtful layout changes, timeless design details, and a reimagined story of who might have once called it home, she has created a charming cooking space that feels authentically coastal and as though it's always belonged.

Embrace a One-Wall Layout in an Open Plan Kitchen

A small kitchen usually comes with a few layout challenges. In this project, creating a better flow required a complete reconfiguration, transforming it from a tiny, tucked-away room to a bright, open-plan one. 'The space was really tight, but the spatial planning did not work. The kitchen had previously been at the far end of the property, tucked in its own separate room where a gorgeous view of rolling hills stood,' Tess explains.

Internal walls were knocked down, and the living room and kitchen locations were swapped, creating a more dynamic flow around the cooking space, and allowing the living area to benefit from the picturesque views once hidden behind kitchen walls. 'It is a holiday rental home, so a bigger kitchen was not needed. Being open-plan also meant that whoever is in charge of the cooking does not feel left out socially.'

Add Antique Storage For a Collected Design

A small space requires a more thoughtful approach to kitchen storage. Too many built-ins can make the room feel smaller and claustrophobic, so Tess chose a freestanding antique cabinet, which adds closed storage while introducing a more characterful detail. It's a functional element, but one that becomes a standout feature within the design.

'We needed a cabinet for storage and could have carried on the kitchen units on this wall, but we felt a focal point, a piece of unique antique furniture, would not only complete the functional aspect but also provide a lovely layer to the space,' she explains. 'It's the same reason we have the antique brass wall lights and café curtain; every detail adds another layer, making the space feel lived in and complete.'

Choose a Quietly Coastal Color Scheme For Timeless Appeal

As a coastal cottage, the interiors needed to reflect the landscape without feeling themed or contrived. Instead of filling the space with predictable kitchen colors, Tess took a quieter, more refined approach with deeper, richer shades that felt more in keeping with the Scottish coastline.

'We paneled the full room, which adds that extra element and depth to any space; it's an architectural detail that worked really well in this instance, especially with its location being on the coast. The V-groove adds to the coastal country vibe of the cottage,' she explains.

'Drawing inspiration from external fisherman cottage doors and the sea, it felt fitting to bring in those blues and reds. The space is small but also dark, so we color-drenched the entire space with the same blue on the walls, ceiling, and woodwork to make it feel cocooning and cozy, even on those cold winter days. The pop of red contrasts really well with the blue to freshen the space up.'

Maximize Space with a Kitchen Table

Not every space can accommodate a kitchen island, nor should it. In this design, the tighter space was much better suited to a kitchen table at the center rather than an island, creating better flow and becoming the hub of the cottage for gathering and dining.

'We saw the dining table as the main hub of the room and a place where guests and host would all come together to help with the cooking prep in a relaxed, laid-back setting,' Tess explains. It also adds to the aesthetic of the kitchen – the dark wood offers a richer take on coastal materials, turned legs and decorative chair backs add dimension to the design, and narrow striped pillows tie the whole scheme together.

Keep Nautical References Subtle For a Playfully Sophisticated Finish

Coastal decor is a fine line – shell motifs and rustic washed woods instantly feel overly themed, but quieter references can feel elevated and collected. In this space, the latter has been executed perfectly, with antique finds and architectural references leading the decor, from the soft window treatments to the vintage oars on the wall.

'We brought together a lot of antiques when styling this project. Stripes, portholes, captain's trunks, and rope-shaped details all came together to make this space feel like it was a fisherman's home. Since it is a holiday let, we wanted all guests to feel like the space held a story and added that joyful touch to their stay,' Tess explains.

But this kitchen design proves the most subtle details can create harmony between new and old, with arch details carried through every room, including the new kitchen, creating a sense of cohesion in a small but impactful way.

Alongside a layered lighting scheme, textural interest, and a unique layout, this modern kitchen feels bright and fresh, yet with plenty of character to match the rest of the home. The secret? It's all about balancing architecture, sleek style, and contrasting materials.

Design a Layout that Maximizes the Shape of the Room

It's not unusual for homes to be extended and remodeled, but they can leave some rooms challenging to navigate, especially if add-ons and expansions don't align. In this scheme, nooks and varying floor levels required a more imaginative approach to the kitchen layout.

'Every project begins with understanding how the space will be used. In this kitchen, the architecture presented several challenges, including a change in floor level running beneath the island and the positioning of the garden-facing windows,' says Ben Kempton, Director at 202 Design, who worked with House Nine Design on the project.

'We worked backwards from the key functional elements, centering the sink beneath the middle window to maximise views and natural light, before carefully considering circulation around the island and access to the walk-in pantry. This process resulted in a layout that feels effortless to use and responds naturally to the building's constraints and opportunities.'

Use Arches to Marry Different Zones

A complete kitchen redesign can look new and shiny, so it's important to reference the home's existing architecture for cohesion. And in this design, arches became the linking detail. 'The arches were a natural response to the home's architecture,' Ben recalls.

'By repeating this detail in the cabinetry, we strengthened the connection between the building and the joinery, creating a more cohesive interior. Beyond their architectural significance, the curved forms soften the overall composition, bringing a sense of warmth and approachability that balances the darker finishes and richer materials used elsewhere in the kitchen.'

The arches are most prominent near the pantry, where a recessed bar nook and pantry doors are both arched. They were added to continue the architectural language from elsewhere in the home and soften the kitchen, which features several angles and straight lines.

'Functionally, this area acts as an extension of the main kitchen rather than simply additional storage. It provides valuable preparation space for a coffee station and smaller appliances, while housing items that are used less frequently. It offers flexibility without interrupting the primary working zone of the kitchen, allowing the main space to remain calm and uncluttered.'

Add Interest with a Contrasting Island

Blue and white kitchens are among the most popular palettes you can choose. And while the two shades offer a classic contrast, texture is just as important, which is exactly why a wooden kitchen island was chosen as the centerpiece of this scheme.

'Contrast was an important part of the design. The painted shaker cabinetry is a classic color, while the limed oak island provides warmth, texture and a contemporary focal point. Rather than trying to match the timber flooring exactly, we developed a custom limed finish that complements its tones, creating a more natural and considered relationship between the materials,' Ben explains.

'The marble countertops soften the overall palette, while brass hardware adds warmth alongside the stainless steel range cooker. Throughout the design, we embraced the interplay between light and shade, using contrast thoughtfully to add depth and elevate the space without overwhelming it.'

Use Cabinetry to Create Cohesion with a Pantry

When access to the pantry isn't accessible from the main part of the kitchen, it can easily feel like a totally separate space, lacking any harmonious flow. To ensure the space felt connected, full-height shaker cabinetry has been added, creating a visual connection between zones.

'The full-height cabinetry plays an important role in both the function and composition of the kitchen. Visually, it frames the entrance to the pantry and reinforces the symmetry of the design, while concealing generous storage behind a calm, architectural façade,' Ben notes.

'It also strengthens the transition between the main kitchen and the supporting spaces beyond, allowing the walk-in pantry and secondary preparation areas to support the kitchen without competing with it.'

Layer Light Sources to Balance Function and Atmosphere

What really gives this kitchen a warm, inviting atmosphere is the layered lighting scheme. A more elevated take on spotlights aids function, and pendant lights zone the island, while lamps offer a cozier atmosphere. This approach means the kitchen can transition between a work zone and a more social one.

'Kitchen lighting was considered from the outset as an integral part of the design rather than an afterthought. Working closely with House Nine, we layered decorative, task and ambient lighting to ensure the space functions beautifully throughout the day,' Ben explains.

'Pendant lights above the island create a sculptural focal point when viewed from the adjoining living spaces, while carefully positioned task lighting supports food preparation. Softer ambient lighting adds warmth during the evening, allowing the kitchen to transition effortlessly from a practical workspace to a welcoming space for entertaining.'

'The result is a space that feels refined, harmonious, and deeply connected to the architecture rather than simply sitting within it.'

When character doesn't come from centuries of history, a home needs character injected into it in more creative ways. This was the case with this new home. The owners wanted the feeling that it had always stood on the spot, filled with layered, lived-in spaces.

When the team at TOM Design Collective was called upon to design the new kitchen, the surrounding Arizona landscape became the source of inspiration. It wasn't just the warm tones and natural textures, but also the dramatic mountain vistas and how they could bring the unique surroundings inside.

The result? A beautifully textured neutral kitchen filled with warm, inviting finishes, abundant natural light, and breathtaking views over the landscape that inspired the interiors. Here, we delve into how the design perfects blurring the lines between indoors and out without feeling predictable.

Use Textured Materials for a More Layered Design

Neutrals are one of the most timeless kitchen color palettes, but they require a layered approach to avoid a flat, boring scheme. Texture became a leading feature in this kitchen design, from the limewash wall finish to the exposed stone around the range and the natural wood cabinetry.

'The palette was drawn directly from the surrounding landscape – the red mountains, earthy browns, soft pinks, salmon tones, soil, and native stone that define Arizona. Every material and finish was selected to create a layered, tonal composition that feels cohesive and connected, while maintaining depth and visual interest,' explains Lindsay Mens and Laura Fremont, who led the project.

'Because this was a new build, texture was incredibly important. The movement and coloring of the stone reference the landscape, while the walnut cabinetry, oak kitchen floors, and reclaimed beams introduce natural warmth. We also used aged leather and metals with patina so the materials would feel worn-in rather than overly new or polished.'

Choose Statement Stone to Add Interest

The kitchen countertop stone you choose isn't just about function – it's one of the largest surfaces in your kitchen, so it has just as big an impact on the overall aesthetic of your space, too. To add an extra layer of interest to the design, Lindsay and Laura naturally gravitated toward a bolder, warmer stone to suit the overall palette.

'Initially, we explored quieter stone options, but when we came across this slab, we knew it was the right choice. It brought together all of the tones already established throughout the home while introducing a sense of movement that made the kitchen feel truly special. The veining naturally draws your eye without overpowering the surrounding materials,' they recall.

The placement of the slabs was just as crucial as the stone itself. 'During fabrication, it was important that the movement landed in the right places and almost echoed the formations of the mountains outside. The kitchen needed a showstopping element, but it still had to feel natural, warm and appropriate to its setting.'

Reimagine Classic Shaker Cabinets for a Contemporary Feel

A Shaker kitchen is widely considered one of the most classic cabinet styles you can choose, but it can also lean a bit traditional in many schemes. To balance timeless style with a more unique approach, micro-Shaker cabinetry has been introduced here, bringing a more contemporary twist on a classic.

'For the cabinetry itself, we used a classic Shaker-style profile but refined it into a much thinner frame, which gives it a more contemporary quality. The walnut was selected to coordinate with the oak floors while adding a slightly darker, richer element. Rather than painting the cabinetry, we wanted the natural grain and warmth of the wood to remain visible,' says Lindsay and Laura.

'We also avoided filling the room with upper cabinets. The tall glass-fronted pantry cabinet provides a place for meaningful objects, with patinated brass panels behind them adding another layer of warmth. More practical storage is tucked into the butler’s pantry, allowing the main kitchen to remain beautiful and open while still functioning well during large gatherings.'

Mix Materials for a More Impactful Island Design

A neutral scheme requires a mix of materials and textures to feel layered and lived-in, and it's demonstrated in a few ways here. The kitchen island brings a blend of materials that tie the scheme together, while layered decor adds a personalized touch. The goal was to create a 'natural and organic, but not predictable' design.

'The island brings together the stone, warm wood, patinated brass, and leather stools. Seeing the stone horizontally on the island gives it a different quality from the backsplash; you notice more of its warmth and texture rather than just the dramatic veining,' they note, emphasizing the beautiful glow created when morning light meets the brass details.

'That mixture gives the kitchen depth and warmth while still keeping the overall design restrained and classic. Once that foundation was established, we added softer layers through the linen shades, iron sconces, vintage pottery, and accessories. We wanted the kitchen to feel as though it had developed a story over time warm, lived-in, and soulful rather than like a newly completed shell.'

Let Natural Light Serve as a Focal Point

Kitchen lighting is integral to the design, both to add brightness and offer expansive views of the surrounding landscape that helped form the entire scheme. The kitchen has been designed so that your eye is instantly drawn to the views before noticing the individual details of the room, so two pivotal details have been introduced.

'The window above the kitchen sink almost acts as a picture frame, with the landscape becoming the artwork. Its clean, minimal design allows the view to speak for itself without adding visual distraction. The patio doors and skylight strengthen that connection and allow natural light to change the appearance of the stone, wood, plaster, and metal throughout the day,' they explain.

The skylight does more than maximize light – it plays a key role in how the interior lighting has been integrated into the design. 'The skylight created an opportunity to suspend the Rose Tarlow pendants over the island. They help anchor the kitchen and bring warmth and intimacy into what is otherwise a very tall architectural space.'

'The kitchen itself is the standout. What makes the room successful is the combination of the views, architecture, skylight, reclaimed beams, walnut cabinetry, oak floors, plaster, stone, brass, leather and natural light,' Lindsay and Laura conclude.

'The architecture gave us an incredible foundation rooted in the Arizona landscape, and our role was to build upon that foundation and add warmth, depth and soul. It is a highly functional kitchen, but it also feels layered, personal and connected to its surroundings, and I think every kitchen should have that feeling.'

But this open-plan kitchen by Next in Design 2025 winner Sophie Garland proves that the most successful spaces are all about the smaller, changeable details. Sociable zones have been considered just as much as functional ones, and materials have been meticulously selected to blur the line between utility and comfort.

Here's exactly how the designer created the look using a soft, layered color palette, a mix of materials, and collected decor, transforming the room into a beautifully timeless kitchen that marries practical and sociable style.

Mix Textures, Forms, and Materials For a Lived-In Kitchen

More lived-in, sociable kitchens have become all the more coveted over the last year, transforming these rooms from purely functional to a space you actually want to spend time in. For interior designer Sophie Garland, that meant designing this kitchen much like she did the adjoining living room.

'I wanted the kitchen to feel like an extension of the living room next door rather than a completely separate space. It's where we spend most of our time, so I wanted it to feel like a place where you could happily sit and relax, not just somewhere to cook,' she explains.

'Kitchens can easily feel quite hard because of all the stone, metal, and cabinetry, so it was important to introduce softer elements such as fabric lampshades, table lamps, curtains, and comfortable seating. Those details make the room feel much more relaxed and comfortable.'

Use Soft, Contrasting Colors For a Layered Kitchen Scheme

Color is just as crucial to a soft kitchen, especially one that needs to transition from a functional cooking space into a cozier living space. In this design, warmth and contrast were key, but to avoid overwhelming the room, Sophie chose a more muted palette of warm white, muted pink, and dark green.

'The walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground, which has been used throughout the ground floor to create a sense of continuity. The cabinetry is painted in Pointing by Farrow & Ball and Puck by Little Greene. I love the contrast between the lighter and darker colors. Although Puck is a deep green, it has a vibrancy to it that stops the kitchen from feeling heavy,' she notes.

Rather than creating contrast between the walls and cabinetry, she chose to introduce it through the built-ins for a more dynamic look. 'Using two cabinet colors helps break up what could feel like a long run of joinery. It makes the cabinetry feel lighter and less imposing, and almost gives the taller cupboards the appearance of freestanding furniture.'

Mix Backsplash Materials For a Playful Design Element

One of the most eye-catching features of this design is the kitchen backsplash, an area where Sophie has decided to throw out the rulebook and create something more unique. While a stone countersplash alone is classic, a mixed material finish gives this scheme far more personality.

'I continued the green granite behind the range cooker, but because there is already so much of it on the countertops, I didn't want to carry it all the way beneath the wall cabinets. At the same time, it felt like that section of the wall needed something rather than being left plain,' she recalls, adding that not only did the granite influence the color palette, but it also helped to tie everything together.

'I asked decorative artist Eliza Downes, whom I've worked with on projects before, to create a hand-painted mural. I knew I wanted it to be decorative rather than pictorial, and together we developed this design, trying lots of different colors until we found the right balance of brighter, softer, and more neutral tones. I love how the waves of the pattern continue from one side of the wall to the other.'

Swap Out Built-In Cabinetry For Freestanding Furniture

Freestanding kitchen furniture is a timeless way to create a more livable space, but adding an armchair and sideboard in place of built-in cabinets is a bold yet effective way to emphasize the idea of a cozy kitchen that's used to live in, not just cook in. But it also creates space that can be utilized to create a more personalized design.

'Choosing an armchair and sideboard instead of more built-in cabinetry freed up wall space for artwork. The photographs are by my godfather, who was a wonderful photographer and took them in India, and alongside them hangs a seascape by my great-aunt, Sarah Churchill,' Sophie says. And this nook has become one of the most used areas of the kitchen.

'It creates a comfortable place to sit with a coffee or chat while someone is cooking,' she continues. 'The sideboard was the first piece I bought for the house, which I found on 1stDibs. It was the perfect size for that wall and meant I could have large antique lamps at either end, with one of my most treasured possessions, a marble sculpture by my aunt, Edwina Sandys, in between,' she explains.

Use Decor to Give a Dining Space Its Own Identity

Kitchen zoning is crucial in an open-plan space. It's an approach Sophie has achieved using decor and accessories throughout the space, giving the dining area its own identity while still feeling cohesive with the main kitchen.

'I wanted the dining area to feel like its own space within the open-plan kitchen. The curtains were actually the final addition to the room, but they completely transformed it. They introduced another layer of color and softness, and in the evenings, it's lovely to close them rather than look out into the darkness,' she explains.

'Those smaller details are what make a room feel collected and lived in. It's a large space with high ceilings, so it was important that it didn't feel empty or soulless. Mixing different colors, textures, and materials helps create a room that feels as though it has come together over time, rather than everything matching perfectly.'

And that's exactly what she has created using inherited decor, antique pieces, and freestanding furniture.

Inspiration can come from almost any source when you're designing a home. Perhaps it's a boutique hotel you once stayed at, your favorite movie, or even a vacation destination that brings you joy.

For the designer of this kitchen, however, the inspiration came from a far less expected place: her daughter's play kitchen. Featuring a joyful yellow hue, the children's toy became the starting point for the design of the whole room – and it makes a compelling case for the revival of yellow kitchen ideas.

With the right material pairings, decorative styles, and balance of fun design and unrivalled functionality, the space has been transformed into a truly sophisticated butter yellow kitchen. This is how designer Clara Jung, Founder of Banner Day Interiors, created the dreamy scheme.

Embrace Playful Colors for a Personality-Led Design

When looking to her daughter's play kitchen for inspiration, Clara started with the color palette, noting 'the yellow was an obvious jumping-off point' for the entire design.

'I'd pitched yellow kitchens to clients several times over the years and could never get anyone to commit. I think there's an outdated notion that yellow reads as too traditional, or too fussy. This was my chance to prove otherwise,' she explains, something that made the scheme all the more exciting.

To ensure the kitchen color leaned sophisticated, she paired yellow with a classic marble countersplash, clean white walls, and dark wood accents. It feels full of personality whilst still keeping an overall timeless look.

Flank a Range With Countertop Cabinetry

It's easy to fall into the trap of introducing standard upper kitchen cabinets. Not only does it not function for every kitchen, but it can also leave a design looking a little lacklustre. Clara took a different approach, opting for countertop cabinets flanking the range.

'As a vertically challenged person, the standard upper-and-lower cabinet setup has never really worked for me. When I designed my own kitchen, I wanted to maximize truly accessible closed storage, which meant bringing cabinetry down to counter height wherever I could,' she notes.

Not only does it create accessible storage, but it also creates a sense of kitchen zoning more subtly, separating the range cooker and the sink without creating a hard divide or blocking natural light.

Choose a Kitchen Table in Place of an Island

A kitchen island has become a standardized feature in spaces where it will fit, but it's not the only option available. Taking inspiration from English kitchens, Clara introduced a large dining table to the center of the room, creating a social hub as well as more usable space.

'This project had a major pivot mid-construction. We ultimately had to consolidate a dining room and kitchen into one footprint. After a lot of floor plan iterations, it became clear that separating the two would leave me with a small kitchen and a small dining room,' explains Clara.

'I looked instead to British-style scullery kitchens, which sometimes place the shared eating space right in the center of the kitchen. Expanding on that idea allowed me to claim more cabinetry wall space and ultimately build a much larger kitchen than I would have otherwise had.'

The dark wood table also establishes a beautiful contrast with the bright yellow cabinets, and adds to the overall warm and cozy feel of the design.

Add Visual Interest With Rich Wood Tones

The key to making the yellow cabinetry feel more sophisticated is contrast, and that came in the form of rich wood tones in this design. In addition to the beautiful table, a section of full-length wooden cabinets fills the end wall, adding ample storage while also creating a beautiful, enduring design feature.

For Clara, establishing a sense of contrast with the wooden cabinetry helped to balance the colorful palette and add cohesion to the table. 'Since the center table doubles as our formal dining room, I wanted the space to feel friendly but still elevated. That run of walnut brings in a richness and formality that balances out the playfulness of the yellow.'

Mix Lighting Styles To Zone a Kitchen

In this design, beautiful kitchen lighting choices help to elegantly zone the space.

'Our house was built in the 1920s, but it has a light touch regarding original period details, which gives me room to play with different styles and design eras. Since the room is long and multifunctional, I wanted the lighting to mark the different zones within the kitchen subtly,' Clara explains.

Over the dining table, two large Japanese-inspired pendants hang low for a more decorative and ambient light, while a smaller hand-blown amber glass light sits above the kitchen sink, offering more focused task lighting above the workstation.

Introduce Light and Character Through Vaulted Ceilings

Vaulting the ceilings is a great way to allow more light into a room and create the illusion of greater space. And it's a choice that worked particularly well in this project, utilizing the original shape of the cowshed's roof so the exterior still felt authentic and the interior more inviting.

'The vaulted ceiling was important because it allowed us to maximize light and the scale of the former outbuilding, but it needed balancing. We introduced exposed timber beams to add warmth and visual structure, oversized statement lighting to bring the eye down, and layered natural materials throughout the room,' explains Geri O'Toole, Founder of Geri Designs.

'The large island, banquette seating, and stone walls also help create intimacy and ensure the room feels welcoming,' she adds, explaining that vaulting the ceilings was as much about architectural integrity as it was about maximizing light. And the ceiling height allowed more of the stone walls to be exposed.

'The preserved stone gable wall tells the story of the building's past, while the almost four-meter-long island anchors the room and creates a natural gathering point for family life. Together, they perfectly capture the balance between heritage and contemporary living that defines the entire design.'

Choose a Busy Marble For Visual Interest

In a neutral kitchen, adding interest through texture and contrast is key. While wood and white are the dominating palette throughout this design, the marble countertops and backsplash with a more dramatic, yet not overwhelming, veining have been introduced to add a striking focal point.

'The Calacatta marble was chosen because of its natural beauty and subtle gold veining. Rather than selecting a heavily patterned stone, I wanted something elegant and enduring that would age gracefully,' she explains of the material choice.

It was important that the stone felt harmonious and not become a domineering feature. 'The marble introduces movement and light reflection, becoming a focal point while still feeling sophisticated and timeless. Its warmth complements the surrounding limestone and oak beautifully.'

Emphasize a Coffee Station With Arched Architecture

Adding architectural interest isn't always easy when you are working with a renovated outbuilding – these working rooms were all about function, with little in the way of aesthetic design. Making the most of the thick walls, Geri chose to introduce a recessed arch into the back wall, creating the perfect nook for a stylish coffee station.

'The arched coffee station was designed to make use of what could otherwise have been an unremarkable deep wall. By recessing the cabinetry and introducing an arch, it became an architectural feature in its own right,' she notes of the design, which ties in with the arched doorway into the kitchen.

And it's a detail that adds a lot to the room, both visually and practically. 'Functionally, it houses the coffee station and everyday appliances, while visually it adds softness, character, and warmth. It feels more like a piece of furniture than standard cabinetry, which helps the kitchen feel layered and collected.'

Integrate a Hidden Pantry For a Sense of Separation

Function is the most important part of any space, and making the most of kitchen storage ideas is the foundation of a successful design. Because maintaining a calm and uncluttered finish was key in this kitchen, a hidden pantry was introduced at the far end of the room, remaining out of sight yet still easily accessible.

'A key objective was creating a clutter-free kitchen that could still support busy family life. The pantry allows appliances, food storage, and everyday mess to be tucked away behind doors, keeping the main space calm and organized,' Geri recalls.

It's a simple approach – cutting off the end of a long kitchen to create space for a walk-in pantry means the kitchen cabinetry doesn't have to work so hard, allowing a more lived-in look. 'By separating functional storage from the social areas of the kitchen, the room feels more elegant and relaxed while still working incredibly hard behind the scenes.'

Embrace a Charming Dining Nook For Family Gatherings

No family kitchen feels quite complete without a dedicated place to sit, dine, and gather. To balance comfort while complementing architectural features in the room, an L-shaped banquette was chosen for this charming kitchen corner.

'The banquette was designed to make the dining area feel comfortable and inviting while softening the harder architectural elements in the room. The curved oak detailing introduces warmth, while the sage-green mohair upholstery provides a subtle layer of color inspired by nature,' Geri says of the palette.

The colors and materials were chosen carefully to feel warm and soft in their own right, while still harmonizing with the rest of the scheme. 'The muted green sits beautifully against the limestone and stone walls, creating harmony rather than contrast. It contributes to the relaxed, organic feel that runs throughout the kitchen. It is also functional with young children.'

Look to Decorative Details For a Personalized Feel

What truly separates one kitchen from another is the moments of personalization. It gives a cooking space a unique flair that simply can't be achieved with a color palette or kitchen layout choice.

'The decorative details bring personality and soul to the space. In a neutral interior, texture, craftsmanship, and carefully curated objects become even more important,' she says, explaining that these smaller details are just as important as the larger installations.

In this kitchen, space has intentionally been left to display collected art, showcase decor alongside elegant kitchenware, and a layered lighting scheme that brings in a new layer of materiality.

'Features such as the exposed stone walls, layered lighting, shelving displays, and collected decorative pieces prevent the room from feeling flat or clinical. They tell the story of the home and create the sense that the kitchen has evolved naturally over time.'

In an old home, especially one of listed status, the obvious approach is to design a kitchen that feels traditional and full of old charm – something that feels like it has always been there. But authenticity in character properties comes in many forms, especially in a kitchen that wouldn't have originally existed.

When the team at Studio 9 Design was entrusted with this kitchen redesign, they decided to take an alternative approach. Respecting the architecture and history was a priority, but so was creating a family kitchen fit for modern-day life. To balance both, they chose to rework classic details in a way that felt a bit more contemporary.

Using a thoughtful color palette, mixed storage styles, and an emphasis on sociable design features, this once dated kitchen is now the true heart of the home, balancing high-function with timeless style.

Imbue Warmth With Earth Tones

It's easy to lean into neutrals when endeavoring to create a kitchen that feels light and uplifting, but switching to softer earth tones is a great way to add a sense of warmth. And in this kitchen, muted green and natural wood tones offered the perfect balance.

'The palette was driven by the wider interior scheme and a desire to create warmth without relying on stark whites,' says Bahar Nejad and Alice Adamczewski, Founders of Studio 9 Design, who collaborated with kitchen makers at Alistair Fleming Design on the project.

'The soft green introduces a sense of tranquility and connection to the surrounding landscape, while the natural timber brings depth and texture. Paired with warm off white and beige tones, the result feels layered, inviting and timeless, a palette that is gentle, understated and easy to live with.'

Scale Up an Island For Storage and Seating Space

There might be standardized sizes for kitchen islands, but one of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring scale. The island should feel proportionate to the kitchen's size while catering to your everyday requirements – and in this kitchen, an enlarged island was key to the room's success.

'Scale was a key consideration. The room is generously proportioned, and a smaller island would have felt visually lost within the space. The island needed to hold its own architecturally while also serving the practical needs of a family of four. Incorporating seating transformed it into a social hub, encouraging conversation and connection while cooking,' they recall.

'Positioning the sink centrally makes the kitchen feel more sociable and intuitive to use, while integrated storage ensures everyday essentials remain close at hand. We also wanted the island to feel more like a beautifully crafted piece of furniture than a standard kitchen unit, which is why we introduced furniture-style drawers to the front elevation, adding character, craftsmanship, and valuable storage.'

Mix Backsplash Materials For Visual Interest

A kitchen backsplash is one of those defining features that helps to dictate whether a kitchen leans more traditional or contemporary. And because this project required a careful balance of the two, a mixed material backsplash was chosen, with the lower half a marble slab, and the upper half a more classic paneled approach.

'Carrara marble felt like the natural choice for the backsplash. It is timeless, beautifully tactile, and develops character with age, which aligns perfectly with the ethos of the project. Above the marble, we introduced paneling to bring warmth, texture, and another layer of visual richness,' explains Bahar and Alice.

'The success of the composition lies in its continuity; the same paneling is carried through into the glazed cabinetry, creating a seamless dialogue between the interior and exterior of the joinery. These subtle repetitions are what give the kitchen its sense of longevity and quiet sophistication.'

Blend Different Storage Styles For Function and Character

One of the most effective details in this kitchen is the mix of storage styles, with closed cabinetry, glazed doors, and open shelving all implemented throughout the space. Not only does this create custom space for different kitchen items to live, either hidden or on display, but it also creates a more visually interesting design.

'Closed cabinetry conceals the more functional elements of daily life, while glazed cabinets provide an opportunity to display beautiful glassware, ceramics, and collected pieces. The contrast creates a sense of balance, ensuring the kitchen feels both highly functional and personal. It’s often these curated displays that bring character to a space and make it feel truly lived in,' they note.

'The hidden pantry was designed to absorb much of the visual noise that naturally accumulates in a hardworking kitchen. Housing small appliances, food storage, and everyday essentials behind full-height cabinetry allows the main kitchen to remain calm, uncluttered, and architectural in appearance.'

Carve Out Space For a Dedicated Dining Nook

Increasingly, homeowners are seeking dedicated dining spaces in their kitchens beyond the island, and in this family space, a nook with a spacious banquette ensured there was plenty of space for the whole family to gather, while also providing some extra storage.

'We wanted the dining experience to feel intimate and relaxed. In a room of this scale, placing a dining table in the centre would have interrupted the openness of the space. By creating a banquette, we were able to establish a more inviting and sociable corner while allowing the rest of the room to breathe,' Bahar and Alice recall, noting the materials were chosen to introduce 'softness, texture, and comfort' in keeping with the rest of the scheme.

'The storage beneath the banquette was designed in response to how the family lives. Our clients wanted a practical place to tuck away blankets, outdoor cushions, and everyday items that can quickly create visual clutter. Integrating storage into the seating allowed us to maximise every inch of available space without compromising comfort. The proportions were carefully determined by the seating height and joinery detailing, ensuring the solution felt both practical and beautifully resolved.'

Old homes hold a certain allure, especially when they still have many of the original features. But renovating them requires a careful balance of retaining character and rethinking the whole space to function for a modern-day family, growing and evolving as the homeowners do.

Tucked away in the historic neighborhood of Queen Anne, Seattle, this Arts & Crafts home required that very approach in the small kitchen to reintroduce lost authenticity, while rethinking the layout so it felt more in tune with day-to-day life.

By enlarging the footprint to accommodate the clients' joy of hosting and cooking, taking inspiration from the original features elsewhere in the home, and infusing unique interpretations of historical design features, the kitchen is now a warm, characterful space that functions for every member of the family.

Pair Rich Wood With Light Neutrals For Seamless Flow Between Rooms

In a home where the kitchen connects to the dining and living spaces, a thread, whether it's through color or materials, needs to weave through each to create a sense of cohesion. And with the original features present in this home, rich wood tones and warm neutrals became the palette for the kitchen scheme.

'Once we removed the built-in storage wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room, it became clear that the new space needed to connect visually with the rest of the home. The dining room and front room still feature the original millwork and built-ins, so carrying those rich wood tones into the kitchen was essential for creating a sense of continuity,' says Laura Libby of Edition 82.

'At the same time, I wanted to strike a careful balance. The home has a naturally masculine character, but I didn't want the kitchen to feel heavy or dark. We selected handmade solid walnut upper cabinets with a flat-cut veneer that has beautiful movement, echoing the original tiger oak found throughout the house,' she explains.

'To keep the room feeling light and airy, we paired them with warm off-white painted lower cabinets. An all-wood kitchen would have felt too heavy, and with young children and a beloved family doodle in the mix, painted lowers offered the added benefit of being durable and easy to touch up over time.'

Soften the Kitchen With a Curved, Freestanding Island

An island anchors a kitchen, no matter its size. But when you're designing around more modest proportions, much like this project, it has to work harder, both functionally and aesthetically. And Laura employed a few thoughtful design features to achieve this.

'The kitchen island was one of the most important elements of the entire design and is completely custom. Inside, it features walnut interiors with adjustable peg storage for bowls and plates, as well as custom walnut silverware dividers in the top drawers. Every detail was thoughtfully planned around how the family lives and uses the space,' she explains.

Visually, she wanted it to read more as a piece of furniture than a built-in feature, both to add character and to nod back to the era of the home. 'By incorporating turned legs and an open base, the island feels lighter and more graceful. Being able to see underneath it creates a greater sense of openness and helps the room breathe,' she notes. Yet it's the curved silhouette that truly stands out.

'The curved shape softens the room and improves circulation, while the furniture-inspired detailing gives the island a sense of permanence, as though it could have been passed down through generations. It serves as the centerpiece of the kitchen, bringing together history, craftsmanship, and everyday practicality in a way that feels both timeless and welcoming.'

Embrace Glazed Cabinets For a Traditional Feel

Glazed kitchen cabinets have been re-emerging in designs lately, bringing traditional charm, breaking up long runs of hard surfaces, and allowing light to bounce more easily around the room. It was for these very reasons that Laura felt they would be a perfect addition to this kitchen.

'The kitchen cabinetry was designed to feel as though it had evolved with the home over time. For the perimeter cabinets, I drew inspiration from the Hoosier cabinets and built-in storage pieces that would have been common in a house of this age. I wanted the kitchen to feel historically grounded without becoming overly theme-driven or historically accurate,' she explains.

'The glass-front uppers were a very intentional design choice. Beyond their practical function, they help reflect and bounce natural light throughout the room, preventing the perimeter cabinetry from feeling too heavy. Because we were incorporating rich walnut tones and substantial millwork, the glass adds visual lightness and sparkle while allowing cherished pieces to be displayed rather than hidden away.'

Create Contrast With Dark Countertops

A beautiful white marble feels like the obvious choice if you want to create a kitchen that feels authentic in older architecture and create a softer look. But in a family kitchen, something a bit darker is often favored for reduced maintenance. So a matte black quartz was chosen to bring the visual appeal of soapstone, but with the durability you don't get with natural stone.

'The black countertops play two important roles in the design. First, they provide a historical nod to the hardworking, utilitarian surfaces that would have been common in a home of this era. They ground the space and help reinforce the sense that the kitchen could have always been there,' Laura explains.

'Second, they help maintain the balance of the room. With the warm off-white cabinetry, handcrafted finishes, and abundance of natural light, the kitchen could have easily tipped too soft or delicate. The black counters bring a sense of weight and contrast that keeps the space feeling tailored and substantial,' she adds.

'I've often joked that when I look at this kitchen, I don't see a Queen Anne lady – I see a Queen Anne gentleman. The black countertops are a big part of what gives the room that confident, timeless character.'

Continue a Backsplash Into Open Shelving

No one wants to fill the edges of their kitchen countertops with decor or essentials they like to have within easy reach, and open shelving offers a charming alternative. But instead of introducing them high on the walls, elongating a backsplash into an integrated shelf is not only useful, but also incredibly sophisticated.

'Open shelving has deep roots in kitchens from this home's era,' says Laura, referencing simple designs supported by wooden corbels, which she wanted to incorporate in a more elevated way. 'With so much beautiful wood already present throughout the home, introducing stone shelving helped maintain a more streamlined look.'

And marrying them with the stone kitchen backsplash, with brass brackets for elegance and additional support, felt like a natural move. 'Functionally, the shelves serve several purposes, such as providing a place to display personal touches, helping the kitchen to feel lived in, and reflective of the family that uses it,' she explains.

'They are also surprisingly practical. This family cooks and bakes frequently, and when the back counter is in full production mode, the shelves become valuable overflow space for ingredients, keeping the work surfaces clear without sacrificing accessibility.'

Use Floor Tiles to Add Warmth to a Neutral Kitchen

We often look to cabinetry and colors to infuse warmth into the room, but often, kitchen flooring is the most impactful choice. While wood may seem an obvious choice in an old home, Laura chose tiles with irregular tones to create a traditional feel without leaning too predictable.

'I wanted the flooring to bring warmth, character, and a sense of history to the space. We selected a tile with significant tonal variation, which gives the floor a richness and authenticity that feels appropriate for a home of this age,' she recalls, describing the process of choosing the right tile and grout color 'nerve-racking.'

'With this much variation in the tile, the grout color had an enormous impact on the final appearance,' she explains. 'We also chose to lay the tile in a traditional Versailles pattern. Historically inspired yet timeless, the pattern helps distribute tonal variation more evenly throughout the space while adding another layer of visual interest.'

Taking on a historic home is a big responsibility, and restoring it to its original character is an even larger endeavor. And so often, the kitchen becomes the trickiest room to get right, simply because it would never have existed in the same way it does today.

When the team at Artichoke was brought in to revive the kitchen in a grand Victorian home, they were tasked with transforming a muddle of small rooms into a welcoming kitchen and pantry worthy of the grand proportions. All while reintroducing as much original charm as possible, so it felt as though the kitchen had always been there.

With a thoughtful blend of materials, a playful mix of colors, and a unique approach to storage, this once awkward corner of the house is now the true centerpiece of the home, a traditional kitchen perfectly poised for hosting, socializing, and serving as a space for the whole family.

Let Historic Architecture Lead the Design

When you're designing rooms in a historic property, you already have the striking architecture to lead the design, and in the case of this kitchen, the Victorian estate boasted a rich history that the owner was keen to restore and emphasize. And it started with the existing features and taking cues from Victorian design.

'The inspiration came directly from the house itself. We looked closely at the language of Victorian interiors – the tapered legs of our bespoke Cook's Table, paneled moldings, generous proportions, and rich paint finishes – and interpreted them in a restrained way,' explains Anthony Earle, Artichoke’s Creative Director.

'The aim was to create a family kitchen that felt entirely at home within the architecture, embracing period character while discreetly accommodating modern conveniences. Every decision was made to ensure the room felt as though it had evolved naturally with the house,' he continues.

'Rather than creating a perfectly coordinated scheme, we designed a composition of individual elements that feel as though they have been accumulated over generations. Different materials, finishes, and pieces of furniture sit alongside one another, creating a layered and highly personalized interior.'

Create Contrast and Character With a Colorful, Freestanding Island

Neutral kitchen colors are popular for a reason – they're classic and allow the kitchen to evolve. But contrast is key, and in this design, the freestanding island benefited from a bolder color – a rich terracotta red that instantly adds warmth and interest to the space.

'The island was conceived as a Victorian cook's table rather than a contemporary kitchen island. By treating it as a freestanding piece of furniture, it introduces a sense of lightness and historic reference,' says Anthony, noting the warmth and personality it brings to the space while 'providing a beautiful contrast to the lighter walls and natural timber surfaces.'

Inspired by the home's Victorian architecture, they took a more traditional approach to painting the island. 'In hand finishing the Cook’s Table, we replicated the feel of many layers of oil-based paint accumulated over time. It becomes a cheerful focal point within the room whilst reinforcing the feeling that the kitchen has evolved over time.'

Reinstate the Range as the Heart of the Kitchen Through Thoughtful Design

For many, the island has become the heart of the kitchen, but traditionally, the range was the true hub of the space, bringing warmth and sustenance, usually set into a fireplace. And, in keeping with the home's history, Anthony was keen to ensure it was reinstated as the room's true focal point.

'Historically, the hearth was the heart of the home, and we wanted to restore that sense of importance. Originally, the overmantel was to be painted stone so it would appear to have been there many years,' he explains.

'However, the client fell in love with the stone in its natural state, so we left it as it was. The limestone chimney piece adds a degree of historical gravitas, making it feel as though you have discovered the center of the house rather than a modern kitchen installation. It provides both visual order and a strong architectural presence.'

The blue range cooker complements the terracotta and green tones also present in the design, while a tiled kitchen backsplash adds a traditional design feature, and shelves create space for recipe books close at hand. The antique brass pot hanger and pot filler further enhance the aged look that adds so much charm to the space.

Make Storage Functional, Yet Elevated in Design

A traditional kitchen thrives with a more thoughtful approach to storage compared to the built-in approach of modern schemes. Filling this kitchen with rows of uniform cabinetry would have taken away the character and historic flair the clients wanted, so creating kitchen storage that didn't feel utilitarian was key, including an additional room.

'The pantry performs an important supporting role, allowing the main room to remain open and sociable. Within the kitchen, we incorporated deep drawers, utilized existing wall cavities next to the hearth, and designed storage that feels integrated into the architecture. This allows the room to function exceptionally well without becoming dominated by cabinetry or appliances,' Anthony explains.

The goal was to create a kitchen that felt original to the home, which meant finding unique solutions to hide modern amenities. 'By housing the refrigerator within a larder-style cabinet, which we set back into the wall, we were able to keep contemporary technology discreet. A large stainless steel appliance would have introduced an unnecessary visual interruption. Concealing it allows the architecture, materials, and craftsmanship to remain the focus.'

Double Up On Sinks

A family kitchen needs to be functional for more than one person at a time. In order for someone to be cooking or cleaning while others access the kitchen, a layout with two sinks was chosen here, with a small one on the island for easy access from the range, and a larger statement sink along the perimeter countertops to serve as the main basin.

'The kitchen is designed to work hard for a busy family, so two sinks simply make everyday life easier. The main solid soapstone sink, carved from a single block and also mirrored on the shelves, is dedicated to washing up and is incredibly hardwearing, while the secondary sink serves as a preparation area,' Anthony recalls.

'We designed a sacrificial frame around the sink, which can be replaced if the wood becomes damaged over time. There’s even a little hot tap on the side run for making drinks and cooking – everything has been considered. This separation allows multiple people to use the kitchen comfortably at the same time and supports the room's role as both a practical workspace and a social gathering place.'

Mix Materials For an Authentic, Dynamic Scheme

In the same way that contrasting colors bring interest to a kitchen, mixed materials have the same effect while allowing you to introduce new textures and tonality. But in this kitchen, it was an important addition to create a lived-in, characterful space that truly felt at home in the historic architecture.

'The guiding principle was to create the impression of a room that had evolved naturally over many decades. Victorian interiors were rarely composed of a single material palette. Instead, they were layered and assembled over time,' Anthony explains.

'We combined soapstone, oak, aged sycamore, painted timber, brass, and glazed cabinetry, selecting each material for its character, durability, and authenticity. What unites them is their quality and honesty. They belong to the same vernacular family, even though each has its own distinct personality,' he adds.

'The result is a room that feels collected rather than designed, with a depth and richness that rewards closer inspection.'

One of the best examples of this is the small pantry area. Built into the brick wall, this recessed niche sits far lower than standard cabinetry thanks to the old architecture of the property, but instead of concealing or altering it, Iain embraced the quirky proportions and transformed it into a tiny pantry space, complete with glass storage jars for a more aesthetic look.

Even small sections of bump-out walls have been retained, helping to add subtle zones and break up long expanses of walls. These are all details usually removed, but they add so much character to the room, telling a small part of the home's story.

Design an Island That Feels Decorative Yet Functional

A kitchen island is a functional addition to a kitchen, but also one that sets the tone for the overall design aesthetic. And while we generally see either fully built-in designs or a classic freestanding piece, this kitchen has taken a completely different approach to create something that's decorative without comprising function.

'Design inspiration came from our Haberdasher's range and projects such as the Stoke Newington Kitchen, which has a similar island. In the context of this kitchen, it feels like a shop counter or museum display case, surrounded by the customer's collections of vintage items and kitchenalia,' Iain explains.

To give the island the grandeur it deserves within the large kitchen, he went for an enlarged design. 'The size of an island should match the proportions of the space,' he explains. 'Having a more fitted 'solid' island in such an expansive space also provides a grounding structure to the room. The glazing is a smart choice, adding lightness without losing out on storage.'

Mix Cabinet Styles and Colors for Visual Interest

In a small kitchen, keeping to a uniform color helps to elongate the space and make it feel bigger. But in a larger footprint, breaking up the color and style of your cabinetry is key to creating visual interest and making it feel less expansive. And it's been done expertly here.

'One mark of success for this space is that you can't easily tell which furniture and accessories are new and which are old,' Iain recalls, referencing details like the mix of cabinet colors and the wall textures in play.

'Choosing several colors for different pieces of furniture helps zone the space, and gives a sense that the furniture has been pieced together over a longer period. This works beautifully for the eclectic aesthetic of this kitchen,' he adds.

'The same goes for the structure; a blend of existing painted brickwork and windows, and new details like the tongue and groove behind the cooker. This all gives extra texture and a greater sense of history. The customers were not shy to accessorize our cabinets, which is always great to see.'

Look to the Walls to Introduce Pretty Kitchenware Displays

As soon as you step into this kitchen, your eyes are drawn to the walls, not just because of the spectacular arched windows that frame the space, but because they have been just as carefully considered in the design. Housing beautiful decor and kitchenware in different ways, they introduce the character and style of the homeowners without feeling cluttered or gratuitous.

'Open storage can add a lot of character and warmth to a space. This can become even more important for larger spaces, which can otherwise feel too fitted, with monolithic furniture. The deVOL ethos is to put as much effort into styling kitchen spaces as you would a living room or bedroom, and open storage or hanging rails encourage this,' explains Iain.

The range hood is adorned with a row of decorative plates, a wooden rack mounted beside the window holds an array of kitchen towels, and a long brass rack on the ceiling holds an array of utensils, copper pans, and dried herbs, creating a decorative display that marks the entrance to the kitchen.

Designed by the interior designer Jennifer Hunter and home to a young family, the first step in the process was structural works to open up the once-closed-off space, before adding a series of clever storage solutions throughout.

While working as a functional family space, this kitchen is also filled with elevated design details, from playful terrazzo flooring to reclaimed wood ceiling beams, which add character. Anchor an Apartment Kitchen With an Island

A kitchen island shouldn't be reserved for large country kitchens only. With a considered approach, kitchen islands can anchor smaller kitchens, helping to differentiate different zones while adding another, more casual, seating space.

'The large central island became the kitchen's anchor, both functionally and visually,' says Jennifer. 'In an apartment setting, introducing an island of this scale requires careful consideration, but because we fully opened up the footprint, it felt not only appropriate but essential.'

With the island as the focal point, the rest of the space is divided into clever zones for various functions. 'We carved out a series of thoughtfully defined zones: a dedicated coffee station, a discreet laundry area tucked behind a closet with a mesh screen, and a range wall that reads as its own moment,' the designer explains.

Beyond its functionality, the island takes the kitchen from utilitarian to lived-in and welcoming. 'The goal was to create a space that feels more akin to a country home kitchen: open, inviting, and deeply connected to daily life, rather than a utilitarian room tucked away,' says Jennifer.

Integrate a Mix of Open and Closed Storage Solutions

Kitchen storage ideas are important in any home, but especially in apartments where every inch of space counts. This kitchen also doubles as a utility room, but its thoughtful design means it sits seamlessly within the space.

A row of full-height cabinetry features a mesh screen, which offers a rustic look while boasting practical benefits, too. 'This allows for ventilation while subtly concealing the machines, striking a balance between practicality and design,' explains Jennifer. 'Treating this zone with the same level of detail as the rest of the kitchen ensured it feels cohesive rather than purely utilitarian.'

Beyond the utility space, storage is integrated into pretty much every part of this kitchen. 'Along the perimeter, we incorporated a mix of concealed and open storage to balance utility with display,' Jennifer adds. 'An appliance garage keeps everyday items like the toaster and coffee maker easily accessible but out of sight, helping maintain clean sightlines.'

'The pantry was designed to maximize vertical storage, ensuring there’s ample room for dry goods and larger items without overcrowding the main cabinetry. We also introduced moments of display to break up the millwork and add personality, allowing select pieces to feel curated rather than purely functional,' she says.

Create a Lived-In Feel With a Cozy Breakfast Nook

The breakfast nook in this kitchen adds coziness, helping it to feel more like a living space than a purely utilitarian one. 'The goal for the breakfast nook was to create a quiet moment within the larger, more open kitchen,' explains Jennifer. 'We wanted it to read as a destination rather than just an extension of the kitchen, somewhere you’d naturally gravitate toward for a slower start to the day or a more relaxed meal.'

To realize the vision for this corner, Jennifer added banquette seating. 'It not only maximizes the footprint because it tucks neatly into the architecture, but also creates a sense of enclosure that a standard table and chairs simply wouldn’t,' she explains. 'There’s an inherent comfort to a banquette; it invites you to linger, and in a space like this, it helps define the nook as its own environment. It also allowed us to integrate additional storage below, making it as practical as it is inviting.'

The decor also helps the breakfast nook to feel warm and welcoming. 'Because the kitchen leans more toward materials, this was an opportunity to introduce a bit more personality,' she says. 'The pattern adds movement and visual interest, while the artwork brings in color and a slightly more playful tone. Together, they create a layered, lived-in feel.'

Create a Timeless Look With Neutrals and Pops of Color

Neutral kitchens will always be timeless, but choosing the right shades is key. 'The kitchen palette was designed to feel grounded and layered,' explains Jennifer. 'The neutral cabinetry and walls create a calm foundation that allows the architectural details and materiality to really shine.'

Alongside the walls, which were painted with Farrow & Ball's Wimborne White and Stony Ground on the cabinets, subtle additions of more colorful hues were added, from the terrazzo flooring to the pendant light. 'Rather than anything too saturated or high-contrast, the tones are softened, which helps the kitchen feel lived-in and timeless,' she explains. 'It’s a more nuanced approach to color that complements, rather than competes with, the surrounding finishes.'

'The terrazzo floor adds another layer of visual interest, almost acting as a quiet pattern underfoot,' says Jennifer. 'Its mix of tones subtly picks up on the colors used elsewhere, helping to unify the palette without feeling busy.'

'The palette works because it’s layered but not loud,' she adds. 'Each element has a role, and nothing is competing for attention. It’s a kitchen that feels both refined and comfortable.'

Find a Balance Between Old and New

'This kitchen was very much about creating a dialogue between old and new, letting each material tell its own story while still feeling cohesive as a whole,' says Jennifer. While the sleek marble countertops and terrazzo flooring add a contemporary look, texture is added to the space with wood ceiling beams, among other elements.

'The reclaimed wood beams bring warmth and history into the space,' she adds. 'They soften the overall look and add that essential contrast to the cleaner lines of the cabinetry and stone. While they are not authentic to the space, they immediately bring a sense of history and architectural weight, grounding it in something that feels authentic and timeworn.'

'The terrazzo flooring adds a slightly more modern layer,' explains Jennifer. 'Its subtle patterning and composite nature bring in a contemporary sensibility without feeling stark or out of place.'

'Then there’s the green brick backsplash, which sits somewhere in between old and new,' she adds. 'The brick format references something traditional and textural, while the color and finish give it a fresh, updated feel. It adds depth and a bit of mood, preventing the kitchen from skewing too polished or predictable.'

Ultimately, the blend of old and new helps to make the kitchen feel timeless, suggests Jennifer: 'Spaces that lean too heavily in one direction can feel dated more quickly. By layering both, the result feels collected over time rather than designed all at once.'

It's a balance this kitchen design nails, despite the more modest proportions and pared-back color palette. The secret? Custom details in the most unexpected places, and a layout that focuses on the clients' needs rather than following standard rules.

From the unconventional use of marble to the elegant cabinet details and decorative choices, every element has been thoughtfully introduced to blend timeless (yet still unique) design with ultra-personalized function.

Elevate Functional Cabinetry With Considered Details

A white kitchen can easily feel flat and uninspiring. But adding decorative details and unique mouldings can be the difference between a basic and an elevated design. And that's exactly the approach taken in this scheme.

'The perimeter cabinet style is flat with applied molding, a very unique style you don’t see often. Given our client wanted a white kitchen, we knew we had to bring in something different to set the design apart and make it more personal,' says Erin Coren, Creative Director at Curated Nest.

'The island cabinets are shaker style with a bead and tambour insert. These, done in white oak, provide an abundance of texture and warmth to the space, complementing the cleaner style of the perimeter. Together, they create an interesting, layered design, with the island providing a timeless element, and the perimeter providing personality and a modern touch.'

Introduce Marble Beyond the Countertops

Marble can add a lot of impact and luxury to your kitchen, but it hinges on how you introduce it. Marble countertops are a nice touch, but taking it one step further with a marble-front sink and framed windows truly makes a statement, adding additional interest to an all-white scheme.

'Instead of using a traditional sink, we opted to make one from the same stone as the countertops. This made a strong aesthetic statement, but there was a design reason for it too. The stone we ended up selecting was so beautiful that we wanted to see more of it and allow it to be the star,' Erin explains.

It's a detail that had more intention than you might think – the marble sink created an opportunity to bring in more marble more visibly, adding dimension to the design. And the window frames and sidesplashes were added for the same reason.

'It gives a dimensional opportunity to see the marble, so it’s not just flat on the counter, but also vertical on the window, wall, and sink. These types of applications make a kitchen feel 10 times more custom and bespoke to the client!'

Break Convention to Maximize an Island

There's a standard kitchen island layout we're all used to seeing – usually a rectangular design with seating along one side and storage or appliances along the other. But going against the grain and opting for a more personalized design is often the key to a more functional and visually balanced space.

Erin prioritized 'maximum storage and seating efficiency' on the island, opting for seating on two opposite sides to maximize traffic flow and access to cooking zones. 'This configuration works because it promotes gathering and easy conversation through proximity and line of sight, not always the case on long run islands, where the family is seated all in a row,' she notes.

The second unconventional detail on the island is the sink, which has a very different use from the marble basin on the perimeter cabinetry. 'We added a second prep sink to the island close to the range so we could create an optimal space for cooking, with a working triangle between the prep sink, range, and refrigerator.'

Get Creative with Hidden Storage Solutions

At first glance, this kitchen nails visual cohesion and harmony, but behind closed doors are genius storage solutions that allow the kitchen to remain organized and high-functioning. And one of the most important is the appliance garage, added to house the clients' coffee essentials they use daily.

'Given its very efficient footprint, this kitchen was at risk of feeling cluttered if too many items were sitting on the countertop, and no one likes looking at multiple appliances every day. Closing the doors after use is incredibly satisfying, as there is no cord clutter or appliances to look at,' Erin explains.

Even the range benefits from custom storage, keeping everything tidy while still easily accessible. 'We love adding niches within range alcoves. Not only are they a good use of available space, but they’re also perfect for storing frequently used items, like spices and oils used in daily cooking. We like to deck them out with lovely spice canisters and a beautiful oil dispenser.'

Use Sculptural Decor to Soften a Hardworking Kitchen

It's the decorative details that really imbue a sense of characterful, lived-in style to a kitchen, and in this design, it was sculptural and curvaceous forms that really brought a softer sense.

'We wanted the kitchen to feel homey and inviting, yet still elegant and polished, reflecting the lifestyle of our clients who love to entertain,' Erin recalls. From statement lights to bolster cushion-style stool backs and statement vases, each element feels intentional and cohesive.

'The sculptural items in this kitchen add softness and curves, which were important for balancing out all the hard surfaces and geometry of the kitchen, making it feel warmer and more approachable.'

Even the kitchen cabinet hardware follows suit. The pulls on the larger doors are oversized and echo the ball detail throughout the decor, bringing a more decorative finish and balancing the proportions. It's a small detail with a huge amount of impact.

There’s a real charm to historic homes, but of all the English architectural masterpieces of decades past, Victorian homes often pose the most challenges, especially when you’re designing rooms that would have looked very different at the time of construction.

The kitchen is usually the first room in need of TLC, typically a long, narrow extension to the rear of the home that feels cramped and disconnected – an issue interior designer Elizabeth Macfarlane was keen to rectify when she bought her red brick Victorian Villa in West London.

Her approach to the kitchen redesign was clear: treat it as a restoration, bringing charm and original period character back into the interiors that had suffered during its time as a ‘90s bedsit. And with help from deVOL, the kitchen is a true masterclass in reintroducing lost character to a kitchen that didn't always belong.

Use Internal Glazing to Create a Brighter Kitchen

It's not uncommon for a kitchen to be relocated from that awkward back-of-house nook to a more central, sizable room elsewhere in the home. When Elizabeth chose to move the kitchen into one of the reception rooms, a lack of windows caused concern that the space would feel too dark, so internal glazing became a crucial detail.

'I decided to incorporate an internal window and glazed doors into the hallway and utility so that we could borrow light from those rooms closer to the front and back of the house. We then carried the same design into the glazed pantry doors to give the kitchen a feeling of lightness and openness it wouldn’t otherwise have,' she explains.

The pantry is perhaps the standout feature in the kitchen, connected yet also zoned by glass doors, creating easy access without making the main kitchen area feel cluttered. And it's so important for storage, allowing the rest of the kitchen to take a more character-focused stance.

'The pantry functions in two ways: the above-counter open shelves are a place to store and display our pretty clutter – cookbooks and crockery; and the below-counter curtained shelves and units are a place to store and hide our practical and less pretty clutter, like the microwave, a drinks fridge, and other small appliances. In both cases, the result is that the kitchen itself is pleasingly clutter-free.'

Add a Sense of Tradition with a Soft Yet Classic Color Palette

Color plays an important role in the design of any kitchen, but much more so in a traditional space where history needs to be preserved. Here, cream walls, light pink cabinetry, and contrasting joinery really capture the soft, vintage feel the space was missing.

‘The inspiration for the kitchen color palette was a piece of vintage fabric I had found at the Saint Ouen flea market in Paris. It's a floral weave in dusty pinks and browns, and I loved its faded old-world feel,’ Elizabeth recalls.

‘I had the fabric made into the under-counter curtain in the pantry, and it was the starting point for my other choices – deVOL’s Princelet Pink for the kitchen cabinets, Farrow and Ball’s Dimity, a soft off white with pink undertones for the walls, and Farrow & Ball’s Cola for the pantry doors, joinery and internal window.’

Blend Function and Vintage Style with a Freestanding Island

Part of creating a kitchen that felt integrated into the bones of the home's heritage meant making decisions that weren't solely about function, but what felt authentic, too. And for Elizabeth, the usual built-in island just wasn't a good fit.

'The fitted kitchen island as we know it is a relatively recent invention, and I knew that it would feel out of keeping with the historic feel I was trying to give the house,' she explains, noting that a more furniture-adjacent design would feel far more in-keeping, especially as there is plenty of storage throughout the rest of the space.

'Victorian kitchens would have had a simple wooden work table for food prep at their centre. deVOL’s Dairy Table had just the right feel and was the reason I chose to work with deVOL on the kitchen.' The island still features deep drawer storage, but has a more open, freestanding quality that feels more characterful.

Mix Cabinetry Styles for a Dynamic Design

It's easy to fall into the trap of fully matching cabinetry to create a cohesive look, but in a more traditional design, mixing in an unexpected counter cabinet that differs slightly in style from the built-in units helps to create a more authentically collected feel. In the case of this kitchen, it was an antique cabinet that made the cut.

'Even though deVOL’s joinery has a lovely heritage feel to it, I felt the kitchen would feel too new unless I added an original antique piece. Upper or wall-mounted kitchen cabinets always feel too kitcheny to us, so this kitchen, like most of the kitchens we design, had no uppers,' says Elizabeth.

'One of the practical downsides to that is there is no above-counter storage for glasses and mugs, so I decided to look for a vintage counter-sitting glazed cabinet to sit close to the sink and the hot water cabinet to store glassware and mugs. I trawled the Saleroom for months before I found a cabinet in just the right size and with just the right wood tone for sale by Duggleby Auctioneers.'

Embrace a Kitchen’s Unique Architectural Details

No old home is complete without the architectural details that give it a unique identity, and in a Victorian home, it's all about plasterwork. But given that this home had lost all of its original features, Elizabeth had the task of sourcing the right detailing for the newly positioned kitchen.

'I took time researching the type of architectural detailing that would have been original to the house and worked with Butcher Plasterworks, who specialise in period moldings. The Victorian taste was for ornate plasterwork, and the most elaborate designs would have been used in the larger reception rooms, like the one in which we relocated the kitchen,' she explains.

'I wanted to stay true to the period and chose a traditional Victorian design that combines egg and dart and floral motifs, and went with a complementary design for the ceiling rose, but to soften their impact, we painted them out in the same color as the walls and ceiling.'

Treat Your Cabinet Hardware as Decor

Kitchen hardware has the power to elevate your kitchen design, or leave it feeling a bit basic. In this kitchen, it's been expertly utilized to bring in more of that traditional charm, but also to act as a decorative detail that really softens the room.

When asked about the hardware, Elizabeth describes it as 'one small detail that I think punches above its weight in terms of the difference it makes,' opting for deVOL’s Georgian Swing Handles on all of the drawers where you might typically expect to see a cup pull in a more traditional kitchen.

'They are the style of pull you would find on an antique chest of drawers, and they really elevate the joinery, making it feel like fitted furniture rather than kitchen units,' she describes.

And while kitchen design rules can be a great starting point, following them to a T can leave you with a scheme that feels a bit predictable – the opposite of what the homeowners of this kitchen desired.

In many ways, the rule book has been thrown out almost entirely, with an asymmetrical layout, unconventional features, and hidden storage solutions combining to create the most unexpected yet still timeless space. And there's a lot to take note of.

Embrace Classic, Timeless Materials

There's a time and a place for bold, busy kitchen decor, but classic materials and timeless colors are key to a space that endures. Wood and stone in this kitchen form a neutral backdrop to a busy hub of the home, instead prioritizing layers and textures.

'We did bolder color splashing in other areas of the home. But the kitchen was intentionally kept to a more calming, quiet palette. The materials and layered textures provide the interest – no need for color to steal the show,' explains interior designer Allison Lind.

'By enveloping the space with soft, creamy, and quiet neutrals, it allows the inherent chaos of the kitchen (think loud family gatherings, messy recipes) to really be the life of the space. The best design, in my opinion, provides the backdrop for a colorful life – it doesn't overshadow it.'

Make the Island Work Harder

One of the most common kitchen design mistakes people make is underutilizing the island, both with storage and social requirements. But in this space, Allison made it a priority to get the most out of the supersized central centerpiece of the kitchen.

'It's massive – 10' long by 48" of cabinetry (full 24" depth on both sides to maximize storage) and a comfortable 24" overhang so we could comfortably tuck in over-sized counter stools,' she explains of the island's grand size.

'That seating area was going to get a lot of use, so we wanted it to be built for comfort. And the island top was also going to be highly functional for entertaining, prepping, and serving – the more workspace, the better. Luckily, the clients are tall, so their arms can reach for cleaning.'

Create Hidden Storage Within a Backsplash

In a busy family kitchen with hosting and socializing at its heart, lots of open storage can become a cluttered eyesore. Hidden storage is the simplest and most effective way to avoid it, and in this space, the kitchen backsplash was the focus.

'The clients love to cook and wanted the functionality of items within easy reach, but they also have a large extended family and two small children, so an open shelf concept or messy spice drawer would have just added to their chaos,' says Allison.

'We knew we needed to find not only the perfect statement stone, but one that ideally came in 2cm, because the original plan included the concept of a sliding marble backsplash to reveal hidden spice/cooking oil storage,' she explains, highlighting that the homeowners 'didn't want to sacrifice beauty and elegance for function.'

'Creating a sleek space where everything is neatly tucked away and within easy reach seemed like the best solution. Plus, the surprise moment of that reveal this special feature brings a fun, unexpected twist to a typically expected or simple space,' she notes.

Give Asymmetry a Chance

So often, we gravitate towards symmetrical designs for a sense of visual harmony, but if it's going to impede functionality, it should never be prioritized. For Allison, it was the first 'rule' she chose to break, instead embracing asymmetry in the most stylish (and functional) way.

'Symmetry is great when it needs to provide a sense of balance or calm, but that wasn't needed here. Instead, we wanted to maximize functionality of space – a hidden walk-in pantry on the left and then a decorative metal and glass cabinet to help alleviate the space from all the solid cabinetry fronts,' she explains.

And it wasn't just the kitchen layout that got the asymmetrical treatment, but the choice to introduce closed cabinets on one side, and glazed on the other. For Allison, it was a decision that just 'made sense for the space.'

'Trying to match the left side with more solid cabinets just felt heavy and (once again) expected. This helped lighten the mood a bit and provided a space for the homeowner to show off some special items – infusing a client's personality into a space is such a wonderful way to personify the home,' she adds.

Use Materials to Make Staggered Ceiling Heights Feel Deliberate

A previous extension left the kitchen with an awkward jump in ceiling height along one end of the room. And while it felt misplaced before the renovation, Allison was keen to make it work, using textured materials to make it an asset, rather than a hindrance.

'We were working with an existing quintessential 1990s-style skylight. The look was dated, but the natural light it provided was amazing, so there was no doubt we had to keep the feature (just updated with more contemporary windows),' she recalls, noting that raising the rest of the ceilings to match wasn't an option.

'Instead, we embraced the difference in elevation by adding a textured tile and covering the walls with it. It's meant to actually bring your eye up to embrace the height difference as a special feature rather than trying to hide it or make everything blend together.'

Introduce Unexpected Design Features For Added Interest

The approach to kitchen windows has become a little bit predictable, usually designed to sit above a sink, highlighted yet uninterrupted. But instead of working around the windows in this design, Allison took a less conventional approach.

When asked why she chose to install shelves over the windows, her response was 'I have no idea. Sometimes in design, certain decisions make sense and feel expected. Others, like this one, get a confused look or a tilted-head, huh? from the contractors or clients, and I get to say: just trust me.'

It was a decision made from feeling, rather than conventional design rules. 'Something about it just felt right for the space. In a room full of seemingly safe or classic materials, creating unexpected moments makes a space more interesting – it inherently creates a human touch to the space because it's a bit outside the box,' she explains.

Consider the Transition Between Rooms

In a kitchen that moves seamlessly into a dining room in some capacity, we often think about the cohesion of the decor, but forget about the transition between the two spaces and how they connect.

But in this kitchen, the passage that connects the two spaces was just as considered as the rest of the kitchen, featuring a charming archway and a textured finish that elevated what is essentially a walkway. It was just as much about aesthetics as it was atmosphere.

'The hand-applied reeded plaster archway was a special addition – the goal was to create an interesting transition between the elegant, formal dining room and highly-functional, chaotic kitchen. A quick, soft moment of levity,' Allison explains.

You don't need to go bold on color to create a sense of warmth – the right neutral tones paired with textural finishes can do all the heavy lifting. That's exactly the approach taken in this design, where earth tones and slatted cabinet profiles combine.

'It was achieved by mixing a very earthy color palette. A warm brown-green on the kitchen cabinets with the character of olive wood. Creamy white range and farmhouse sink give that pop of sophistication, while the headboard cabinets add that extra layer of texture to break up the wall of cabinets,' says designer Ashley Montgomery.

The texture of the cabinetry is just as important to that warm, inviting atmosphere. The design is as timeless as a Shaker kitchen, but brings something new and unexpected to the space. They add depth and emphasize the color palette.

'We wanted something different and unexpected,' she explains. 'While I do love a classic Shaker, I felt this needed a bit more. We have a long run across the range wall, and by adding this detail, we brought warmth into the space. We kept the wall treatments simple with paint, so the cabinets needed to be the show stopper.'

Balance Closed Storage with a Furniture-Inspired Island

Recent kitchen trends have emphasized the appeal of open storage to soften a room and create a more lived-in look, but that doesn't mean you have to replace your wall cabinets with shelving. An adjoining pantry meant nothing in this kitchen needed to be on display, so closed storage was embraced at every angle.

'For the kitchen ideas, I wanted it always to look put together – open display has its moments, but can sometimes clutter a space. We were working with a large window on one wall, which I look at as our 'open moment.' It adds lightness and ease to the space,' Ashley explains.

Even the kitchen island (a standout feature in the room) focuses on closed storage, but it is expertly balanced by a more freestanding silhouette. 'I wanted it to feel like a piece of furniture. We took the inspiration of a draper's table and made it a bit more functional with drawers on the front for ample storage as well as an overhang on the back for counter seating. It’s a true chef's kiss!'

The lesson here? You don't have to follow the status quo to create a kitchen that's soft and lived-in – success comes from understanding your space and how you use it.

Embrace Statement Stone for a Subtle Infusion of Color

Contrast is king, especially in a neutral kitchen, and a statement stone is an enduring way to bring in an unexpected detail that adds balance to the rest of the room. Here, a blue stone is used for the kitchen countertops and the backsplash, providing a visual break from the neutral finishes.

'We wanted to combine an old-world feel with modern-day elements. Having the stone be a moment, but not too overpowering,' says Ashley of the choice to introduce the more colorful material, emphasizing the importance of a natural stone in the scheme.

'The blue Roma stone is the perfect subtle hit of color. By honing this stone, it saturates the color just enough to be this perfect soft baby blue. The design of the counter and stone choice helps balance a little bit of that modern contemporary feel with the old English details in the cabinetry.'

Let Lighting Do the Talking

Decorative details are so crucial to a characterful, lived-in design, and this scheme gets the balance just right, from the wooden cutting boards perched upon countertops to the aged brass accents and charming kitchen lighting choices.

'This home had so much character to begin with, and we wanted to honor that. Chunky, detailed trim and the original wood floors were a non-negotiable that we would keep in the home,' explains Ashley, acknowledging the need for the fixtures to be a bit lighter and softer.

'Since we chose a ceramic light over the window, I wanted something really soft over the island. This Urban Electric chandelier was perfect to add that touch of glam. It holds its own and is such a statement. The little bits of modern on a classic pleated shade tell the exact story of this kitchen. Keeping the old character while adding bits of modern charm,' she describes.

In large open-plan homes, the kitchen often has to perform two roles at once – a place for cooking and for gathering. In this Alabama farmhouse designed by Sean Anderson with architect Chris Tippett of Tippett Sease Baker Architecture, the team solved that tension by carefully separating entertaining from everyday prep.

The main kitchen design was conceived as a relaxed space to host guests around the island and watch the action unfold, while the messier realities of cooking happen out of sight in a hidden working kitchen and pantry. As Sean explains, the goal was to create a kitchen that felt both welcoming and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape, like the rest of the home.

Embrace a Moody Color Palette

While farmhouse kitchens are often associated with light colors and rustic cabinetry, this scheme deliberately leans into darker tones. The Shaker-style kitchen cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Coachman’s Cape, a rich shade that runs throughout the ground floor.

‘We selected this moody tone to swath most of the lower-level spaces,’ says Sean. ‘The great room has incredibly high ceilings, and this color allowed for more of a cocooning effect.’ Sticking with the same color across several rooms also helps unify the open-plan spaces. ‘We carried it into the kitchen and throughout the common areas for cohesion,’ Sean explains.

Chris adds that the palette was always intended to highlight the natural materials. ‘Throughout the home we stayed faithful to natural materials – mainly wood and stone – designed to take the wear and tear of a lot of visitors and contrast this family’s busy city life.’

Together, the deep paint colour, natural timber beams and marble surfaces create a layered palette that feels grounded and atmospheric.

Use a Single Material Impactfully

One of the most arresting features in the kitchen is the large slab of black marble used for both the kitchen island worktop and the backsplash behind the cooker. Rather than breaking the stone into smaller pieces, the designers installed it as a continuous slab, allowing the natural veining to draw the eye and read almost like a piece of art. ‘The marble slab wall acts as a stage curtain or modern abstract painting of a scale that speaks to the great room,’ explains Chris.

Sean was equally drawn to the expressive quality of the material. ‘We sourced this amazing leathered ‘mystery black’ marble, which adds incredible depth,’ he says. The leathered finish softens the stone slightly, making it feel less glossy and more tactile, which helps it sit comfortably alongside the reclaimed wood beams and rustic architectural details.

The lesson here is simple but effective: when you find a beautiful material, let it do the visual heavy lifting.

Add Vintage Character to New Architecture

Although the farmhouse is newly built, Sean wanted to avoid interiors that felt overly polished or pristine. ‘I’m always keen to incorporate vintage elements with some wear and tear to them,’ he says. ‘I want things to feel as if there’s a story behind them.’

This philosophy shows up in the details. The stools at the island were sourced vintage from 1stDibs, introducing warmth and a sense of history to the seating area. Unlacquered brass hardware by Michael M. Coldren was chosen specifically because it will develop a natural patina over time. ‘We didn’t want the interiors to feel brand new, but as though the owners had spent years curating and collecting pieces,’ Sean continues.

The kitchen lighting also reflects this layered thinking. A substantial pendant fixture by Roman and Williams echoes the scale of the heavy timber beams and range surround, tying the old-and-new architectural elements together.

Hide the Hardworking Kitchen Behind the Scenes

Perhaps the cleverest aspect of the layout is what you don’t see at first glance. Behind the marble range wall sits an entire back-of-house zone containing a working kitchen, pantry, and additional kitchen storage spaces. ‘The left-hand opening on the range wall leads to a hall with the working kitchen and pantry,’ explains Chris.

Here, the practical tasks of cooking, food preparation, and clean-up can happen out of sight. ‘With the main kitchen serving more as an entertaining space, all of the typical appliances – aside from the range – are cleverly concealed behind the cabinetry,’ he adds. The working kitchen itself contains wall ovens, a microwave, open shelving, and a custom stone apron sink – all designed to make cooking for large groups easier.

‘These spaces allow for food preparation, serveware storage, and even dirty dishes after a gathering,’ says Chris. The result is a kitchen that always appears calm and uncluttered, even when the house is brimming with guests.

Color-Drench the Pantry for a Cohesive Look

Rather than treating the pantry as purely functional, Sean approached it with the same attention to atmosphere as the main kitchen. Cabinetry and walls are painted in the same Coachman’s Cape shade, creating an earthy color-drenched effect that makes the small room feel intentional rather than secondary – especially when paired with black marble countertops and warm brass hardware.

Even the shelving was designed to reinforce the farmhouse scheme. In the working kitchen, Chris incorporated open shelves to make the space informal and practical. ‘We included exposed shelving for easy access and to create the relaxed feel of a country lodge,’ he explains. It’s a reminder that utility spaces deserve just as much design consideration as the main rooms.

Treat the Kitchen as a Social Space

Because the main kitchen sits fully open to the great room – the home’s expansive gathering space – the designers approached it less like a traditional cooking zone and more like a social hub.

‘With the main kitchen on full view from the great room – where the family and their visitors gather – we purposefully laid out the kitchen to be more of an entertaining space,’ explains Chris. The large island at the center of the room reflects this thinking. Rather than reading as a bulky block of cabinetry, it was enhanced with legs to blend with the farmhouse aesthetic. ‘We designed the island with legs so it takes on the idea of a farm table,’ reveals Chris, giving the piece a lighter presence and reinforcing the kitchen’s social role.

The range wall behind it also plays an important role in shaping how the room is experienced. Rather than reading purely as a functional cooking area, it forms a composed backdrop to the space. As Chris poetically puts it, ‘The range wall becomes a still life that life plays in front of.’ Interestingly, Chris designed the range hood to be concealed within the wall, with timber brackets supporting a substantial beam above the slab backsplash.

With guests gathering around the island while the family cooks, the kitchen seamlessly becomes part of the home’s wider social spaces.

Juxtapose Stainless Steel With Natural Wood

Materiality plays a huge role in a kitchen design – it dictates your scheme's style and the atmosphere of the room. This design nails contrast, blending stainless steel cabinetry with natural wood finishes to achieve a balance of the 'warmth of a historic Venetian home with the precision and functionality of a professional-grade kitchen.'

'The hand-orbited finish softens the surface, reducing reflections and giving the material a warmer, more tactile quality. In this context, the steel provides clarity and structure, while allowing the surrounding materials – wood, stone, and plaster – to remain visually present and expressive,' explains Anna Ongaro.

'Balance was achieved through restraint. The stainless steel is visually strong, so it was important not to over-design the space. The dark anthracite wall acts as a neutral backdrop, while the exposed beams, terracotta flooring, and everyday objects on the shelves introduce warmth and texture. The result is a dialogue between old and new, rather than a competition,' she adds.

'The wooden cutting boards introduce warmth and tactile contrast to the stainless steel surfaces. Their size was carefully selected to function both as practical preparation areas and as flexible covers that can extend or protect the countertop when needed.'

Mix Storage Styles

In a small kitchen, it can be tempting to fill the walls with cabinetry to maximize storage, but introducing a mix of open and closed solutions is often more effective. In this scheme, open shelving fills the walls, with two tall cabinets at each end of the kitchen, creating a sense of symmetry.

'The kitchen layout was carefully designed to be as efficient and compact as possible. We chose to combine closed cabinets with open shelving to balance practicality and visual lightness. The cabinets conceal technical and everyday items, while the open shelves keep frequently used tools within easy reach and create a more relaxed, lived-in atmosphere,' explains Anna.

'A single linear block integrates cooking and washing functions, flanked by two tall units for refrigeration and storage. This configuration ensures excellent ergonomics while keeping the space visually light and uncluttered. Every element is custom-made to maximise functionality without overwhelming the room.'

Keep Lighting Discreet Yet Functional

'The lighting scheme was designed to be discreet and functional, enhancing the material quality of the kitchen without becoming visually dominant. A minimal approach allows the architecture and craftsmanship of the space to remain the main focus while still ensuring precise and comfortable task lighting,' Anna explains.

The low-hanging pendant above the dining table is the only truly visible fixture in the room, yet the darker finish and industrial style help it to blend in with the rest of the room. To illuminate the kitchen, small black spotlights sit between the ceiling beams, while undershelf lighting adds focused brightness above the countertops.

Let Architecture Do the Talking

In a kitchen filled with interesting architectural features, hoards of decorative pieces aren't needed. Instead, allowing those elements to bring character and interest can feel more considered and authentic.

'The home is located on the top floor of an 18th-century palazzo in the Castello district of Venice. It retains many of its original architectural features, including exposed wooden beams, stone details, and traditional materials that speak to the city’s historic character. The renovation was conceived to respect this heritage while introducing contemporary elements in a very measured, understated way,' says Anna.

'The most distinctive feature is the way the kitchen sits within the architecture. The stainless steel kitchen composition feels almost sculptural, yet it blends seamlessly into the historic setting. The contrast between centuries-old beams and the precision of the Ego kitchen creates a quietly powerful visual statement.'

'Today the kitchen is compact, highly functional, and quietly expressive. It acts as the heart of the home, combining professional performance with a domestic, lived-in atmosphere,' explains Anna. 'Despite its strong material identity, it feels harmonious and restrained, designed to be used every day rather than admired from a distance.'

When faced with a sprawling kitchen, it can feel like best practice to fill walls with cabinetry to avoid a feeling of emptiness. But this design proves that a more restrained approach that prioritizes scale yields far more appealing, more elevated results.

In this Arizona home, just a short distance from the region's desert landscapes, renowned designer Shea McGee has transformed what could have easily felt like a cavernous room into an open-plan kitchen that proves balanced proportions are the foundation of a well-designed scheme.

The brief was to create a warm, timeless space that serves as the hub of the client's avid hosting. The result? A warm, layered kitchen that prioritizes scale and function without following the usual rules.

Pair White Oak With Timeless Brass Accents

Warmth and timelessness are at the heart of this kitchen design, where Shea McGee endeavoured to create a space that signalled 'updated traditional', with a blend of East Coast and English style. And the materials were the foundation.

'We knew we wanted to bring warmth and make the space feel cozy, even though the kitchen footprint is so large, so that led us to a full wood kitchen with brass accents,' says Shea McGee, of the classic material choice that grounds the room's large proportions.

'We used a one-step stain on it to keep it true to the original tone and warmth of white oak. We wanted to balance that with unlacquered brass plumbing, lighting, and hardware. We didn’t want any stark contrast against the wood, just added warmth!'

Balances Large Proportions

The large proportions meant a careful approach to the kitchen layout was crucial to its success, both functionally and aesthetically. The room has been designed with three distinct zones that each fulfill a different requirement.

Beneath the large window, the majority of appliances have been integrated into the cabinetry, creating a focused area for function without becoming a utilitarian eyesore. 'We knew we wanted the range centered to the island while allowing counter space on either side. That led the fridge/freezer to land on the opposite wall. It really was a domino effect,' Shea adds.

But perhaps most importantly, each feature was designed to feel balanced in the kitchen's large proportions. 'We had large walkways and clearances that felt appropriate for the scale of the home, so we went with a really large island that felt proportional to the space. This was also ideal for our client, who loves to host!'

Mix Open and Closed Storage to Break Up Built-Ins

It can be tempting to fill every wall and open space with cabinets in a large kitchen to avoid a sense of emptiness, but this design proves that a more considered approach is far more successful. In the central section of the kitchen, there are more drawers than cabinets to utilize deep storage effectively, flanking the fridge/freezer towers and the range.

Adding soffits above cabinets can be a controversial choice, but it gives the full-length cabinetry a sense of belonging in the tall room. 'With the architecture as it was designed, the towers on either side of the range felt like they were floating! We added wing walls to help the towers feel intentionally placed there and make them feel more grounded. We also added soffits above the fridge/freezer wall of cabinetry to complete the space and remove the possibility for a dust trap there,' Shea explains.

To break up the bulk of closed kitchen storage, she introduced open alternatives, such as shelving and a traditional plate rack, which doubles as a visual feature. 'We were concerned about this wall feeling completely solid in comparison to the other walls of the kitchen, which each had an open and cozy feel to them. We wanted this wall to feel layered and leave the options open for color and pattern to be brought in through collected vintage plates and styling pieces on the open shelving.'

Adapt a Kitchen Window into a Pass-Through

Most people use the kitchen window as a pretty viewpoint from the sink, but Shea made it work far harder in this design, doubling as a pass-through window into the backyard, where the clients love to host al fresco.

To soften the full-width run of glass, unexpected curtains were introduced. 'We originally had a valence shade at this window, and adding a cafe curtain of sorts was a later change! There’s a desk next to the kitchen that has a pinboard that matches the fabric of the drapes, and we wanted that fabric to have more of an impact at the window,' says Shea.

'We also wanted a softer layer on the tiled walls, which the drapes brought! The drapery rod spans the full width of the sink wall, while the window does not, so the drapes can easily be pushed to each side, and they won’t interfere with the window’s function at all!'

Turn an Island into a Characterful Centerpiece

Because the kitchen has abundant closed storage, the team could be more experimental with the island design. As the central hub of the kitchen, uninterrupted marble countertops function as the main prep surface, with shallow drawers beneath for utensils required within easy reach.

But the lack of need for appliances or cabinets below meant more fun could be had with the design and silhouette of the piece. 'We referenced a lot of vintage tables and turned leg styles for the island, which was the main jumping-off point for this kitchen design. Once we landed on the design for that, everything else fell into place,' she recalls.

'We were able to go with a large open shelf on the base of the kitchen island rather than adding more storage there! Our client loves collecting pieces, and we were able to highlight a lot of them on that shelf of the island!'

In this period home just steps from Portobello Beach in Edinburgh, British designer Ailsa MacConnell, founder of Studio Mac, proves that confident color choices and clever layout decisions can transform a deceptively small kitchen into the warm heart of a family home. Designed for a young family who love to cook, the brief was clear: make it practical, sociable, and cozy for children – while ensuring the space flows seamlessly into the adjacent living room.

The result is a masterclass in family-first functionality and playful palette use. Here’s why it works – and what you can borrow for your own kitchen, whether you live by the sea or not.

Pair Warm Tones With Cooler Counterpoints

Avoiding obvious coastal blues, Studio Mac brightened the room in Farrow & Ball’s Hay, a joyful, buttery yellow that feels like sunlight bouncing off sand. It sits alongside Paint & Paper Library's Paper II on the walls, ceiling, and cornicing, with Paper III in a slightly darker hue on the woodwork to add depth and texture – a subtle color-drenching technique that makes the room feel cocooning rather than stark.

The red-and-white checkerboard backsplash – in handmade Bert & May zellige tiles – introduces pattern and personality while building on the kitchen’s warmth. Cleverly, the same tiles appear in a striped formation in the upstairs bathroom, reinforcing cohesion throughout the home.

The kitchen countertops play an essential, harmonizing role. The scratch-resistant Silestone surfaces by Cosentino have a soft, grey-blue undertone that could read cool in another context. Here, they counterbalance the warmth of the yellow cabinetry and subtly echo the blue tones used elsewhere.

Turn a Corner Into a Sociable Dining Nook

Incorporating a built-in banquette seating was a considered move that allows the kitchen to double effortlessly as a dining space. Custom designed by Studio Mac, it wraps the corner in layered blue stripes which lean coastal without tipping into cliché – the seat cushions in Firle Stripe by Jane Churchill are paired with scatter cushions in organic cotton from The Cloth Shop and a traditional ticking stripe from Howe at 36 Bourne Street. Crucially, the main cushion has been stain-treated, is removable and washable – a non-negotiable for a household with children.

The narrow bespoke refectory table by Konk ensures easy access, with extension leaves for entertaining. Opposite, dining chairs from Loaf add softness with shearling tie-on seat cushions, bringing texture and informality. Above, a Pinch Soren pendant light provides gentle overhead illumination, complemented by deVOL wall lights on separate circuits. Everything is dimmable, allowing the kitchen to shift from bright daytime workspace to warm evening glow.

Make a Horseshoe Layout Work Harder

Narrow cooking spaces are often pushed toward a simple galley kitchen plan, but this project proves that wrapping cabinetry around three sides can unlock far more function if carefully calibrated.

By embracing a horseshoe configuration, Studio Mac reimagined the space with a bespoke Shaker kitchen in collaboration with Peden & Pringle, whose in-house joiners crafted cabinetry that’s entirely in keeping with the house’s period architecture. This created generous prep surfaces anchored by the Lacanche range cooker, while maintaining comfortable circulation. Because only one person would typically cook at a time, the workflow could be efficient rather than expansive.

Integrate Kitchen Appliances Into Storage

Family kitchens demand serious kitchen storage, but visible clutter can quickly undermine a carefully considered scheme. Here, tall larder cabinets absorb the bulk of food storage, housing double fridge-freezers and a pantry while allowing lower cabinetry to remain streamlined. Reeded glass fronts in a semi-transparent glazing above the cooker add lightness while keeping contents discreetly on display – an elegant compromise between open shelving and solid doors.

One particularly thoughtful decision was leaving the microwave in an open niche rather than concealing it behind cabinetry, as requested by the homeowner for ease. It’s accessible while being hidden in plain sight.

The deVOL aged brass hanging rail (in the same material as the butler sink taps and cabinetry hardware) above the cooker adds another layer of functional and visually pleasing storage, keeping everyday utensils within reach while freeing up drawer space.

Bridge Rooms With Color-Smart Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are often purely practical, but here they become a vibrant design device. Bespoke glazed doors connect the kitchen to the living room while allowing the family to open or close the space as needed. Each side is painted to belong to the room it faces: Farrow & Ball’s Etruscan Red within the kitchen and Edward Bulmer’s Cerullian Blue in the living room. The shift in color softens the threshold, so the transition feels layered rather than abrupt. This unconventional choice enhances cohesion and positions the kitchen as part of a larger whole.
