As an interiors editor, I’ve learned this much: from the words on a page to the pillows on your sofa, what you leave out often matters more than what you put in. And as Thanksgiving looms – the one week a year we all moonlight as professional tablescapers – that editing instinct becomes essential.

Because even the prettiest Thanksgiving table can unravel fast. One garish charger, an overgrown vase, a few too many turkey motifs, and suddenly your efforts to impress have the opposite effect.

With picky in-laws and cousins RSVP’ing by the dozen, the pressure’s on to impress. So I asked designers: what’s the one thing that can spoil an otherwise spectacular setup?

Ahead, their unfiltered advice so you can avoid the most common Thanksgiving table and dining room faux pas without even lifting a fork.

1. Uncomfortable Chairs

Thanksgiving dinner is basically an endurance sport. While everyone obsesses over the menu or the perfect floral moment, the real test of hosting stamina comes down to one thing: the chairs.

‘Thanksgiving dinner is meant to linger, and there’s nothing worse than an uncomfortable chair that makes your guests excited to leave the table,’ says interior designer Kathy Kuo, CEO and founder of Kathy Kuo Home. ‘I’m such a fan of upholstered dining chairs that offer the perfect cushioned perch for each guest,’ she explains.

But if all you have lying around are spare stools, clever styling tricks can turn improvised seating into spots guests will happily lounge on through pie. ‘In these chilly months, I love layering each chair with a faux fur pelt or cozy wool throw to bring an extra touch of warmth to the dining room,' Kathy advises if you're in a pinch. 2. Too Matchy-Matchy Tablescape

Perfection has a way of killing the vibe. Especially on the table. The instinct to make everything ‘go together’ often backfires, according to Joy Lynskey, founder and CEO of Jewel Toned Interiors.

‘A rigidly matched table looks flat and lacks visual interest,’ the designer explains. ‘When every napkin, plate, and runner follows one strict color or pattern, the setting feels contrived, not inviting.’

So, take this as a sign to loosen the rules. ‘Layer a mix of colors, textures, and patterns. For example, try pairing linen napkins with textured ceramic plates and a patterned runner. 3. Disposable Tableware

No matter how long the guest list or how grim the cleanup forecast, paper plates are never the answer. Convenient, sure – but at what aesthetic (and emotional) cost?

‘Paper plates and plastic cups instantly take away from the experience. Thanksgiving deserves more than that,’ says Scottsdale-based interior designer Lauren Lerner. ‘Use your everyday dishes and add one elevated detail like linen napkins,’ she suggests.

Designer Joy Lynskey agrees: ‘Disposable items, like paper plates or plastic cups, always cheapen the table and clash with the spirit of hospitality,’ she says. ‘I get it – it makes the cleanup much easier! Try small ceramic ramekins or glass bowls for sauces, nuts, or dips. Add decorative spoons for a refined touch. These pieces make guests feel cared for and keep the table both elegant and eco-friendly.’

4. A Brightly Lit Room

If you wouldn’t eat under the big light in a restaurant, why subject your guests to such torture at home? Harsh overhead lighting ideas are the enemy of intimacy (and, frankly, of any self-respecting family photo).

‘A Thanksgiving dining room with overly bright lighting can ruin the intimate, cozy vibe you’re trying to embody,’ says designer Kathy Kuo. ‘Setting the mood for any occasion begins with getting the lighting just right.’

Her formula includes a dimmed chandelier, a few warmly lit floor lamps, and ample candlelight. Layering light sources, she explains, creates a flattering glow that makes everything (and everyone) look better.

Pro tip if you go the candle route: skip the scents. ‘Nobody wants an imitation pumpkin or basil overpowering the real thing,’ she warns. ‘At the Thanksgiving table, unscented taper candles and tealights do just the trick.’ If you want to avoid a naked flame because of the chaos that can come with a family Thanksgiving dinner, opt for battery-powered LED taper candles that offer the same effect without the fire hazard.

5. Crazy Centerpieces

For children – and vertically challenged adults – centerpieces can majorly inhibit the flow of a Thanksgiving feast. How are you supposed to catch up with Uncle Mark with a face full of harvest-colored hydrangeas?

‘Anything covered in glitter or overly tall centerpieces that block conversation are instant mood killers,’ shares New York–based designer Alice Moszczynski of Planner 5D. ‘Thanksgiving is about connection, and no one wants to peer around a sparkly pumpkin tower to make eye contact.’

Alice suggests low, natural arrangements of loose greenery, gourds, and taper candles instead. ‘They create atmosphere without cluttering or distracting from the food and company,' she explains.

6. Unassigned Seating

Family dynamics are tricky enough without adding musical chairs to the mix. Even in the most functional families, politeness breeds chaos – no one wants to seem too eager, so everyone hovers.

‘Having no seating plan often leaves guests feeling awkward or out of place, and can unintentionally group quieter guests while talkers dominate a single end of the table,’ says designer Joy Lynskey. ‘Instead, try assigning seats…and when doing so, consider mixing personality types and friendships across generations. Handcrafted name cards at each setting add a personalized detail that welcomes everyone and elevates the aesthetic.’

7. Corny Signs and Sayings

Search 'Thanksgiving decor' and you’ll be met with a parade of plastic turkeys and linen napkins reminding you to Give Thanks. Festive, sure, but hardly sophisticated.

‘These signs have become a design cliche. They are distracting,’ admits designer Alice Moszczynski. ‘A more thoughtful approach is to let the decor itself express itself through soft lighting, layered textures, and meaningful heirlooms. Framed art, family photos, or even handwritten menus feel far more personal and infinitely more chic than mass-produced slogans,’ she says.

Designer Joy Lynskey feels similarly. ‘Consider using textured linens, sepia-toned glassware, natural wood (tree stumps as risers), or organic elements like pampas grass,’ she suggests. ‘These convey the season through ambiance, not cliches, and still align with the Thanksgiving holiday.’ Joanna Gaines, queen of the rustic layered look, no matter what the season, launched plenty of wooden pieces in her Thanksgiving collection, including these wooden candle holders, which would look perfect layered with her Maisley Floral Grid Table Runner.

Even designers – the arbiters of taste, the people we trust to know better – get it wrong sometimes. The wrong viral item, the wrong texture, a momentary lapse in judgment that haunts them every time they walk past it. 'I’m thrilled to see these shades having their moment,' says the color expert Tash Bradley, director of interior design at paint brand Lick, about the golden ochre tones gaining appeal. 'They feel like the perfect complement to the buttery yellows we’ve all been loving, offering a slightly richer, more grounded take on that same joyful warmth.'

'These ochre-rich tones ooze confidence,' Tash continues. 'They look incredible in a living room or snug, especially when you layer them with similar earthy tones in your furnishings and textures.'

And while ochre feels timeless and not overly trend-led, experts say that it's especially fitting for this time of year, adding warmth and coziness to rooms. 'This season is all about adding comfort to the home and rebalancing with warm, serene tones,' explains Helen Shaw, interior color specialist at Benjamin Moore. 'Hues like ochre are resurfacing as popular colors, offering a sandy tone that is both confident and calming.'

'This cozy alternative to butter yellow pairs beautifully with tactile materials, from wicker to appliqué, while acting as a relaxed foil to abstract pattern, painterly finishes, and other rich hues,' says Helen.

The 2 Lighting Shifts Designers Make When the Days Get Darker

Good lighting design is all about creating comfort and atmosphere – as well as practicality. While natural light does a lot of the heavy lifting in spring and summer, in the later months, we need to up the ante.

Plus, we're spending so much more time at home. From holiday hosting to quiet nights in, this is the season of staying home. So, I asked interior designers for the key adjustments they make every fall to keep homes feeling warm and inviting. These are the 2 swaps they make in every home they design.

1. Layering in Low-Level Lighting

Layered lighting is key to any good room, no matter the time of year or day. But it really comes into its own during the fall, when you can't simply rely on the harshness of the big light to brighten your space.

'The key to a well-considered lighting scheme that supports you throughout the year lies in layered illumination, and importantly, in planning it from the very beginning of a project,' advises Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish. 'As daylight fades and the need for artificial light increases, having a variety of sources at your fingertips ensures flexibility.'

A variety of light sources is crucial – and combining lamps, wall lights, and picture lights will help to create warmth and rhythm. Designer Lauren Gilberthorpe agrees: 'As evenings draw in, I always introduce more low-level lighting. Table and wall lamps as well as picture lights create a cocooning atmosphere that overhead lighting alone cannot achieve.'

As well as adding more layers, Christina Cruz of Christina Cruz Interiors suggests making the switch to more heavy-duty lighting designs.

'I swap my lightweight task lamps for more substantial bases and larger, heavier patterned lampshades for fall. In the winter, table lamps become the primary source of light over recessed fixtures, so a grounded lamp with presence creates a warmer, more intimate glow.'

For Jeanne Barber, founder of Camden Grace Interiors, portable lamps work double time in the fall. 'We love adding in additional accent lighting like cordless table lamps to create a cozy environment as daylight fades earlier.' They’re perfect for shelves, side tables, or the entryway – spaces that might not have an outlet nearby to add little pockets of warmth.

'In this cold, dark season, when the sun sets as early as 4 pm, I always make a point to up the ante on indoor illumination,' adds designer Kathy Kuo. 'I recommend adding an extra table lamp (or two!) to the most-used rooms in your home, particularly the spaces you tend to frequent in the evening hours. After all, your cozy family room or restful bedroom can truly never have too many lamps.'

2. Warming Up Your Bulb Temperature

Beyond adding more light, you want to ensure that the lighting you do have works well throughout the darker months. Designers suggest a few clever ways to ensure this.

'The second daylight starts to fade earlier, I lean into lamp light. Table and floor lamps become the new hearth, warm, low, and ambient,' says Kailee Blalock from House of Hive Design Co. 'We swap cooler bulbs for ones closer to 2700K and add timers or smart plugs so the house feels lit from within before you walk in the door. I personally use Kasa plugs that I can control from my phone,' she recommends.

Speaking of timing, Lucy Harris, founder of Lucy Harris Studio, sets her lamps to come on automatically before dusk: 'In the fall, I set my floor lamps and table lamps to come on about half an hour before sunset. I live in New York State, and it starts getting dark in the late afternoon in the fall, and my house, which is set in a forest, can start to feel gloomy after such long summer days,' she explains. 'I find turning on table and floor lamps, with a very warm bulb, at least 2700k, warms up a room and makes it feel inviting.'

'I also switch to warmer bulb tones where possible,' Lauren adds. 'They soften the room and complement natural materials such as timber and stone. This subtle shift ensures the home feels intimate, inviting, and reflective of the season.'

'As the days shorten, I lean into mood lighting by swapping brighter bulbs for warmer ones, and bring in more low-level lighting like table and floor lamps,' agrees Michelle Murphy of DEMI RYAN. 'It’s all about embracing that golden, cocoon-like glow that feels comforting during darker months. In fall and winter, I truly believe there are never too many lamps in a room,' she adds.

And sometimes, it’s not about adding more light at all – but instead making the most of what’s already there. Allison Lind of Allison Lind Interiors likes to incorporate mirrors into her lighting plan.

'When it makes sense within the confines of the design, I love to add a mirror as part of the lighting plan,' she suggests. 'Mirrors bounce light, whether adding to the effect of the natural light entering the room or reflecting the glow of mood lighting.'

While they might sound easy, each of these small lighting shifts carries more impact than you might expect – and is a great place to start before looking at this year's lighting trends. Together, they reintroduce warmth, depth, and dimension just when your home needs it most.

As much as I love a simple linen or rattan lampshade in summer, there's something about them that doesn't sit right in fall. While they of course remain timeless and quietly elegant, I think we can do better for cozy season.

And it turns out, designers agree. On a mission to find out everything there is to know about lighting, I called upon my roster of design experts to find out all the fall lighting switches they're making – and the biggest tip might just be the smallest detail of all.

A simple, easy, and budget-friendly hack, a pattern shade swap is a small but mighty update that totally changes the game. Whether you pick florals, stripes, plaids, or pleats, these are the lampshade prints the experts are picking to bring character to a scheme for fall.

Three Pattern Shade Swaps to Make in Fall

As I started asking designers what patterns they’re drawn to right now, three clear patterns came out on top. And there's a lighting idea here for every interior design style. Let's get into it.

1. Fall Florals

This season is all about pattern with a story. Designers are turning to hand-printed and small-scale floral lampshades to bring a touch of craft and botanicals back into our homes.

'I think of patterned lampshades like jewelry for fall,' says Kailee Blalock from House of Hive Design Co. 'They add soul to a space instantly. We're drawn to block prints, small-scale florals, and stripes. Right now, I’m loving shades that look hand-printed or slightly irregular, nothing too perfect.'

That handcrafted charm is part of the appeal. As designer Lauren Gilberthorpe agrees: 'This season, I favor shades in hand-blocked prints, earthy botanicals, or softly abstract motifs. Pleated, gathered, or textured florals diffuse the light beautifully, creating a warm glow and a sense of intimacy.'

Look for shades that have sweet embroidered florals, or block print motifs that feel a touch more contemporary.

For Molly Torres Portnof of DATE Interiors, it’s about embracing richer tones too: 'For fall, choose smaller-scale floral patterns in warm, autumnal colours like ochre, burnt sienna, and umber.'

2. Folk and Ikat Prints

Where florals are soft and nature-inspired, folk and ikat prints add an extra rich, warm, and crafty layer.

'I’m always drawn to bold geometrics, playful folkloric prints, and anything that feels hand-drawn or just a little offbeat,' says Kit Kemp. 'That’s where the charm lies, and a patterned lampshade is one of the easiest and most joyful ways to add character to a space.'

Whether it’s an antique, softly faded ikat, or a unique folk design, these prints give a room a sense of nostalgia.

My indoor garden comes to life in the fall. It's the season when it has my full attention, while I prepare to put my outdoor plants to bed for the coldest months. There's one idea I stumbled across this week that I instantly knew would give my indoor planting a seasonal feel: fall flowers to grow indoors.

They're perfect for infusing seasonal feeling and color into your interiors for fall hosting. Plus, they're likely to bloom right into winter, and possibly even longer. Having said that, you do have to meet some essential growing requirements to make an indoor setting work.

1. Cyclamen

You can grow indoor cyclamen for blooms that have the potential to last through fall until spring.

They come in a wide range of colors, from reds and pinks to white and purple. They're great for fall flowers to grow indoors because they're quite compact, neatly filling gaps in windowsills or shelves.

Arguably the best type of cyclamen for indoor growing is a florist cyclamen (find an indoor cyclamen plant on Amazon). These are specially bred for long indoor displays, like florist hydrangeas.

And while some fall flowers to grow indoors are best grown as annuals, an indoor cyclamen is uniquely a perennial that can bloom year after year with the right care.

To make indoor growing a success, choose a bright spot that is out of direct sunlight. A direct sun position could cause leaf scorch for your cyclamen.

For me, the success of a well-designed space often comes down to one simple secret: pattern combinations. Over the past year, I’ve noticed a real shift in interiors, with designers embracing bolder, more unexpected pattern pairings – so I, of course, wanted to know how they're doing it.

As designer Lauren Gilberthorpe points out, 'There is a growing confidence in how designers are mixing patterns, with an emphasis on contrast and character rather than strict coordination. The aim is to create something that feels both refined and expressive, where each element has its place but still allows for a sense of spontaneity.'

Whether it’s stripes and florals, or plaid on plaid, the right pattern trends can transform a space from bland to inspiring. With that in mind, I asked interior designers for the pattern pairings they're loving right now – and how to make them work in your own home.

The New Pattern Pairings Designers Love

'Layering patterns like a designer always begins with a base pattern, something that captures the spirit of the space,' explains designer Kailee Blalock from House of Hive Design Co. 'Once that anchor is chosen, we pull its colors to build a family of supporting patterns. We’ll often mix scale (a large floral with a micro stripe) or shift texture (a crisp linen next to a wool plaid).'

'Whenever we’re unsure, we order samples and lay them all out together, texture, color, pattern, because nothing replaces seeing how materials actually talk to each other,' she advises.

Mixing and clashing patterns might feel intimidating at first, but designers are proving it can be fun, expressive, and surprisingly easy. And there’s a pairing for every interior design style. Here’s how the pros are doing it.

From speaking with designers, it is clear that pairing stripes and florals comes out on top. It's a classic combination that balances structure and softness with ease.

'I am loving bold, unexpected pattern combinations right now! It’s absolutely my dream, like a large-scale floral with a tight geometric stripe,' says Michelle Murphy, of DEMI RYAN. 'When paired thoughtfully, opposites make each other stronger. I often keep one pattern grounded in a neutral palette and let the other bring in color or whimsy. Even mixing two different stripes can feel fresh if the scales vary!'

'I’m loving the balance of organic and structured patterns: a botanical print beside a tight geometric, or a painterly textile layered with a micro-check,' agrees Franky Rousell, founder of Jolie. 'It’s that tension between softness and precision that gives a room life.'

Subtle approaches are equally as effective.

Mindy Kelson O’Connor says she has been pairing 'Tight stripes with large-scale vintage floral patterns. I've been using a lot of warm neutral brown/russet color striped patterns, as well as distinguished blues and greens in tailored crisp arrangements, but slightly stepped back tones, and pairing them with fanciful large florals with a lot of color variety, pulling some thread of continuity, whether in color or tone between them.'

Alternatively, designer Rachel Sloane suggests pairing a floral pattern with polka dot. 'I just wallpapered a hallway with a print that feels polka-dash (not dot), and I’m tempted to do a floral runner, or even framed floral prints hung on the wallpaper. The change in scale feels dramatic, and the polka dot adds a touch of whimsy and airiness to a floral moment.'

Color is key to keeping these structured prints from feeling rigid. Amy Lee McArdle of Amy Young Designs says: 'For me, patterns should whisper, not shout out at you. A subtle plaid next to a quiet stripe, or tone-on-tone geometric wallpaper paired with solid velvets. Keep the palette grounded – camel, espresso, bone, and olive – then let one accent, like cognac leather or smoky teal, anchor the room.'

Sophie Salata, head of brand at Vinterior, shares her best advice on making them feel cohesive. 'Clashing patterns which somehow work together, the key here is to embrace color, be confident in your choices, and moodboard first so you don’t get a shock when things come together at the end.'

3. Geometrics and Stripes

Geometric patterns are often associated with precision and symmetry, but designers are pushing them in unexpected directions, mixing structured motifs with artisanal, cultural, or playful prints.

Lauren Gilberthorpe says: 'A favourite pairing at the moment is checkerboard with stripe. The geometry of the two patterns works beautifully together, creating a clean, symmetrical look that feels confident and considered.'

'We’re also seeing a lot of gingham and stripes – especially in smaller, softer scales,' agrees Ali Henrie of Ali Henrie Design.

'For something a little more playful, I enjoy mixing squiggle with a wider stripe,' Lauren continues. 'The combination introduces visual tension and a lively contrast, creating an effect that feels deliberate and modern.'

4. Botanicals and Animal Print

Botanical and nature-inspired patterns are a perennial favorite, offering a sense of calm, freshness, and a subtle connection to the outdoors. And designers are keen to point out that mixing these patterns with structured prints can be particularly effective.

'Lately we've been mixing country patterns, think folksy florals and lots of plaid, with animal print. It creates a cool edginess,' says Jeanne Barber, founder of Camden Grace Interiors.

And Lauren agrees: 'Animal print and botanical motifs are very fun and offer a nod to the great outdoors. Whilst quite strikingly different, both can work well when used together in a color palette that balances each element.'

'Geometrics and florals are an obvious pairing and work together harmoniously both in scale and color,' Birdie Fortescue adds as an alternative. 'They can be used in a classic, restrained way, or you can be more adventurous and playful with the proportions and tones to make more of a statement.'

A final tip? 'I love using multiple patterns together, but there needs to be a hierarchy amongst them to maintain balance,' Birdie Fortescue explains. 'Your hero is the largest, most important print which should be allowed to take centre stage. Add in mid-scale pieces such as geometrics and smaller florals, which pay homage to your hero! Lastly, combine with a few small-scale ditsy prints, checks, and plains to layer and add interest. Throughout the scheme, make sure there is a balance of color, focusing on two main tones with pops of another to link in other elements in a room, such as artwork or a rug.'

When fall rolls around, I get the urge to add more layers at home – to soften hard edges, pile on the throws, and let my rooms feel a little more lived-in. It’s not about starting from scratch, but about adding warmth and charm, layer by layer.

Whether it’s a cozy rug underfoot, a new throw pillow, or some soft candlelight, these small additions can transform a space from summer to fall in an instant. But, as Jacu Strauss, creative director of Lore Group, told me recently, 'Layering isn’t just about creating comfort, it’s about storytelling. Every texture, finish, and pattern should have a reason to exist.'

So, this cozy season, I’ve asked some of my favorite designers to share how they approach layering in interior design – from mixing textures and patterns to balancing contrast and tone. Their advice goes beyond styling tips; it’s about decorating every room for fall in a way that feels personal, textured, and full of warmth.

How to Layer Like a Designer This Fall

The smallest details can shift the whole mood of a room. It’s often less about adding more and instead about mixing thoughtfully to create a balance of contrast, comfort, and character.

To understand how designers really achieve that effortless cozy feel for fall, I asked them to reveal their secrets on the art of layering well.

1. Start with texture

When layering for fall, everything comes down to texture. It’s what gives a room depth, warmth, and that all-important sense of comfort – the design equivalent of swapping summer linen for your favorite cable knit.

'Layering is what gives a space soul,' says interior designer Marie Flanigan. 'It’s where warmth and personality come through. In the fall, I love mixing soft, touchable textures like wool or mohair with rich wood tones and aged metals for depth.'

'Think of texture as its own kind of color or pattern; it brings dimension and warmth,' advises Ali Henrie of Ali Henri Design. 'In the fall, we naturally lean toward cozier materials and warmer tones. Bring in chunky knits, boucle, wool throws, and soft plaids – much like putting on your favorite sweater and scarf. It’s about adding those heavier, tactile layers that make a space feel lived in and inviting for fall.'

'For color, reach for earthy, grounding hues like deep greens, rusty reds, mustard yellow, and the browns that are having such a moment right now in both fashion and interiors,' she adds. 'Brown works beautifully as a neutral; it adds warmth and depth while keeping things sophisticated.'

Brianna Untener of Brianna Scott Interiors suggests: 'I love a textured wall, paired with sleek accents in accent furniture and cozy textures like mohair upholstery and alpaca pillows, and throws. Drapery is another great place to add an interesting texture. Whether it's the same palette or coordinating tones, layering will keep you cozy all fall and winter long.'

'I love layering warm neutrals together with varying textures to make a space feel cozy all year round,' adds Jennifer Press of Press Interiors. 'This includes mixing up the sheen levels. You can balance a grasscloth wallpaper or a textured wool rug against a high-lustre velvet sofa to create warmth that works for all seasons.

2. Play with contrast

Designers say that the secret lies in creating balance through contrast: pairing rough with smooth, matte with glossy, vintage with modern. This is where the art of layering truly looks professional.

'Layering is about orchestrating sensation,' explains Franky Rousell, founder of Jolie. 'It’s how you make a space feel lived in, tactile, and warm without relying on clutter. Start by grounding the room with one dominant texture and then build outwards with contrasting finishes. Think smooth ceramics against matte plaster or woven fabrics alongside polished stone,' she suggests.

Kailee Blalock of House of Hive Design Co. agrees, adding: 'When we approach layering for fall, we start by asking: what do we want this room to feel like? Once we know the mood (cozy, nostalgic, refined, or collected), we start balancing opposites.'

'Rough with smooth, matte with polished, structured with soft. Think: nubby linen paired with velvet, natural wood next to lacquer, or iron with unlacquered brass,' she adds. 'Don’t be afraid to mix eras either; an antique rug instantly grounds a modern space. The key is repetition in tone and restraint in quantity: choose a few textures or finishes and echo them throughout, rather than layering for the sake of more.'

Likewise, Michelle Murphy of Demi Ryan emphasizes that 'uniformity is what kills a layered scheme.'Fall is all about depth and comfort, so I like to layer textures that invite touch,' she explains. 'The key is contrast and balance: if something feels too uniform, add one unexpected texture or pattern to wake it up.'

3. Layer with Lighting

Lighting is the one that brings every other element to life. Without good lighting, even the most beautiful scheme can fall flat.

Mindy Kelson O’Connor, principal at Melinda Kelson O’Connor Architecture and Interiors, suggests treating lighting as the starting point for any well-balanced space. 'When designing, the element I typically start with is lighting because it has an enormous impact on the mood in a room and augments the natural light coming into the space.'

'Layering lighting includes using decorative overhead flush or semi-flush lights, wall sconce fixtures, or bookcase picture lights in a warm metal, and floor and table lamps with varying textures, colors, and even patterned shades,' she suggests. 'In cooler weather, the warm glow of the varying light elements combines to enhance the feeling of warmth in any space. The warmth/color of the LED bulbs selected can also affect the feeling of warmth emanating from the light sources.'

Franky Rousell agrees that light should feel gentle and sensory rather than stark. 'Add pools of soft amber, diffused glow from a shaded lamp, a flicker of candlelight. The goal is to create an environment that feels like it’s wrapping around you.'

4. Mix Patterns with Confidence

Layering pattern is one of the most playful ways to bring personality and depth to a room – but it can also feel intimidating. To make things simple, when mixing patterns, consider scale, tone, and color. Small repeats can sit comfortably alongside bold, larger designs, and a shared palette helps disparate patterns feel harmonious rather than chaotic.

Emily Hancock of Rollins Andrew Interiors says, 'There’s nothing more fulfilling for me as a designer than blending textures, patterns, colors, and finishes in a project. It’s not only an enjoyable process but also a way to add depth and character to a space.'

Sophie Salata, head of brand at Vinterior, advises: 'Start with one grounding piece, then build around it with different materials and tones. Play with pattern scales, a bold geometric can look great next to a fine floral if there’s a shared color running through.'

'The key is to let every layer have its moment,' says Sophie. 'When your textures and patterns feel collected rather than coordinated, the result is a home that feels relaxed, personal, and inviting.'

Similarly, Marie Flanigan notes that pairing subtle plaids with solid linens or velvet can create a timeless balance.

5. Create Comfort Underfoot

Rugs do so much more than zone a space – they’re a tactile layer that instantly adds warmth, softness, and seasonal comfort. Especially as the cooler months arrive, layering underfoot can transform a room, making it feel inviting and snug.

Mindy Kelson O’Connor suggests: 'You can pile a warmer, plush rug in a smaller scale on top of jute or flatweave, and then remove it again in summer months.' This approach allows rooms to evolve with the seasons. Similarly, Georgia Zika of Georgia Zika Design adds: rugs for instant coziness: 'An instant “cozy” look is adding a sherpa, pelt, or sheep skin to any chair.'

'I love starting with a vintage rug to bring warmth and a bit of history into the space, and then layering in subtle details like a striped bench cushion or textured drapery,' adds Amy Courtney of Amy Courtney Design.

'It’s all about balance – pieces that add depth without feeling overdone. And this time of year, I love bringing in warm, earthy tones like rust, ochre, and olive to give the space that effortless, cozy fall feel.'

6. Look Beyond Soft Furnishings

Layering isn’t just for cushions, blankets, and rugs. Look to furniture, art, accessories, and even tabletop settings to create a cohesive, lived-in look that feels seasonal and warm.

Designer Jeanne Barber of Camden Grace Interiors highlights how decorating with art can add drama and depth: 'Using easels with art helps add a layered, eclectic look and creates a dramatic focal point.'

She also points out that soft furnishings aren’t limited to living rooms – 'If you think you don't need to layer in window treatments in your kitchen, think again. Often these rooms are lacking in soft furnishings, so incorporating some softness and pattern in the form of even a simple roman shade can have a dramatic effect.'

Sarah Magness, founder of Studio Magness, agrees that layering isn't just for soft goods, adding: 'It can easily extend into furniture and accessories, as well. Layering can also seem daunting at first, but I suggest starting with drink tables; they are always useful and can be easily moved throughout the space. The drink table is practical, and it usually has a decorative element that adds to the conversation with guests.'

Mix finishes in furniture, like pairing a lacquered side table with a wooden coffee table. Add decorative touches such as stacked books, vases, or art displayed at varying heights. Update tabletop settings seasonally with tactile dishware, metallic accents, and small natural touches. 'We like to think of layering as storytelling; it’s less about “styling” and more about collecting pieces you love,' adds Sophie. 'When you mix textures and patterns, don’t worry about everything matching perfectly. The goal is to make your space feel like it’s naturally evolved over time.'

'Don’t forget the finishing touches: candles with a subtle fall scent, wood accents, and touches of leather all help create that effortless, cozy atmosphere that feels like fall without being overdone,' adds Ali Henrie.

'If a client requests a change to the accessories, it’s usually to duplicate more of the existing,' she continues. 'It is always fun to add more layering and embellish the decorative items within the original scheme of the space. I've never been one to encourage a total home overhaul just because the season's changed. The idea of boxing up and storing decor every few months feels exhausting, expensive, and, I'll be honest, a little wasteful. But I do believe in subtle shifts.

When I started asking designers about where they begin with fall layering, I was surprised by how many of them mentioned art as a jumping-off point. I’d always thought of swapping in some fall throw pillows, a few candles, but art?

'Our favorite fall layering trick always starts with artwork, says Kailee Blalock from House of Hive Design Co. 'Art sets the emotional tone of a space, it defines color, mood, and even texture before a single pillow or rug comes into play. When we begin with art, everything else becomes a conversation around it. We’ll pull tones from a painting for upholstery, repeat a motif from a print in a textile, or echo the warmth of a frame in a wood finish.'

'It’s also one of the easiest ways to bring in that cozy, collected fall feeling, stacking smaller pieces salon-style, mixing vintage frames, or layering artwork on open shelving instantly adds depth and personality. Once the art is defined, the rest of the room naturally follows,' she adds.

It makes perfect sense once you think about it. 'One of my favorite layers lately is easy art,' adds Heather Peterson of Heather Peterson Design. 'Frames leaned on a tub surround, small brass animals perched on a wainscoting – there is something cozy about the impermanence. It is also delightfully unexpected and creates a sense of discovery.'

2. Layer in More Lighting

If there’s one element that completely transforms a space without demanding a full redesign, it’s lighting. I used to think of lamps as purely practical, but when it comes to a seasonal shift, designers say lighting is the best mood-setter.

'Lighting is always where I begin,' says Franky Rousell, CEO and founder of Jolie. 'Before any fabrics or finishes are chosen, I think about how light will move through the space, its softness, and where the shadows will fall. In autumn especially, light becomes the anchor that ties everything together. Layered lighting can transform the mood instantly.'

It’s not about adding more light – it’s about adding better light. Heather Peterson suggests ditching the harsh big light and instead trying out a sconce. 'In the fall, as the days get short and you crave more light but don't want to give in to the overheads, why not add a pinned-up sconce to a cozy spot?'

For designer Bradley Odom of Bradley Odom Interiors, fall is the perfect time to rethink those foundations. 'Each fall, I start by rethinking the rugs – they’re the foundation for everything else. Swapping out a lighter weave for something textural or tonally deeper can instantly transform a space. A great rug sets the mood for the season,' he adds. 'You can layer lighting, throws, and heavier fabrics on top of it, but the rug always dictates the warmth and soul of the room.'

Over my professional gardening career, I’ve managed many gardens throughout the seasons and discovered what performs best in the fall.

Here are some of my favorites that, to me, encapsulate the best of autumn that you can grow in your garden as well.

Perennials for an autumn border

As summer draws to a close, many flowering plants run out of steam after performing well over the hottest months. That being said, there are some perennials that only begin to get going at the end of summer and can provide a much-needed injection of color inerest into the garden.

Japanese anemones

Known for their graceful form and large and colorful flowers, windflowers or Japanese anemones, as they are also known, are one of my trusted go-tos. Reaching a height of 2-4 feet, these rhizomatous perennials are suitable for growing in US hardiness zones 4-9 and thrive on rich and fertile soil in partial or dappled shade. However, with a tendency to spread, you can constrain their growth with a root barrier or by digging up escapees as they appear.

Asters

Easy to grow and loved by pollinators, Michaelmas daisies, or asters, are a traditional cottage garden plant. Flowering from late summer well into the fall, asters are tough and hardy and suitable for growing in US hardiness zone 3 and above. Available in a range of pastel and vivid hues, there is an aster variety for every color scheme.

Heleniums

Alternatively, for warmer tones of copper, orange and red, heleniums are ideal. Blooming through summer and into the fall, heleniums can be grown in USDA zones 3-8, but prefer full sun and a moist, well-drained soil.

Available with a maximum height of 2-5 feet, there is a sneezeweed variety for any section of the border. Helenium seeds are available from Amazon.

Gaura

With its whimsical, slender flower stems, gaura is hard to beat. White or pale pink flowers held aloft on tall stems are classically elegant and sway in even the gentlest of breezes. Whirling butterflies, as it is also called, can grow up to 4 feet tall, depending on the variety and will continue to flower into the fall.

Come the end of summer, its foliage turns from green to red, adding to its autumnal appeal. Less hardy than the previously mentioned perennials, gaura is generally considered hardy in zones 5-9 and prefers full sun and a well-drained soil. Ideal for growing alongside ornamental grasses.

Shrubs for an autumn border

Providing structure and a backdrop for other plants, shrubs are important in any garden, but when it comes to an autumn border, they can add even more. From colorful foliage to berries and seed heads, shrubs have an important role in a fall display.

Smoke bush

Grown as a shrub or a small tree, the smoke bush, Cotinus coggygria, is admired for its vibrant foliage and clouds of tiny flowers that resemble smoke. With their leaves turning orange or red as the temperatures fall, autumn is when they really shine.

Providing a showy background for other plants to dazzle in front of, Cotinus are ideal at the back of a border. Hardy in zones 4-8, this deciduous shrub performs best when grown in full sun and on a fertile, well-drained soil.

Chinese plumbago

For the front of an autumn border, the lower-growing Chinese plumbago, Ceratostigma willmottianum, is a great choice. A sub-shrub that grows to around 3 feet tall, it produces striking blue flowers from late summer onwards and its green foliage turns deep red come fall. It prefers full sun, a well-drained soil and is suitable for growing in zones 5-9.

American beautyberry

Adored for its clusters of bright violet berries, the American beautyberry or Callicarpa americana is another deciduous shrub known for its fall display. If not eaten by the birds, the purple berries may last from the fall into mid-winter and contrast strongly against the leaves that turn from green to orange or yellow come fall.

Growing to 6 feet tall, it is perfectly suited to the back of the border, is considered a drought-tolerant shrub and hardy in zone 6 and above. Although tolerant of partial shade, the best foliage color and fruit production occur when grown in full sun.

Grasses for an autumn border

Offering structure, texture and movement, ornamental grasses have a lot to offer. However, it’s when the low autumn sun shines through them that they really come to life.

Pheasant's tail grass

Forming large clumps of slender green blades that change to fiery shades of copper and bronze come fall makes Anemanthele lessoniana or pheasant’s tail grass, perfect for an autumn border.

Perfect for drought-tolerant planting, this ornamental grass copes with full sun or partial shade, grows to 3 feet tall and will tolerate most soil types. Virtually pest and disease-free, it thrives on neglect.

Golden oats grass

For a taller specimen, Stipa gigantea or golden oats as it is commonly called, will grow to around 6 feet tall. A clump-forming and semi-evergreen grass, golden oats, as its name suggests, produces golden oat-like flowers held high above its foliage that look stunning when backlit by the low winter sun.

Growing best in full sun and on a well-drained soil, it is well-suited to growing in US zones 5-10.

Pennisetum grass

Fountain grass, also known as pennisetum, can often be found in back yards and for good reason. Easy to grow and low maintenance, fountain grasses produce feathery flower plumes in a wide array of colors. However, it requires full sun and a well-drained soil to perform well.

Depending on the variety, fountain grasses can turn orange, bronze or red as winter approaches and provide texture and movement. Hardiness can vary, with some hardy examples able to tolerate US zone 5 and others more tender and only suitable for zone 9 and above.

Bulbs for an autumn border

For the front of a border or under a deciduous tree, the fall-flowering Cyclamen cilicium and hederifolium and Crocus sativus are ideal for growing and naturalizing. The delicate pink or white flowers that bloom in the fall make Cyclamen cilicium a great choice for a fall border.

Growing to a height of only 6 inches tall, this cyclamen's dainty flowers appear just above its green, heart-shaped foliage. A partial-shade lover, this hardy cyclamen happily naturalizes when grown on a moist, yet well-drained soil in zones 5 and above.

When crocuses are mentioned, the early spring flower that is planted in the autumn is usually the first to come to mind. The saffron crocus, Crocus sativus, however, is a fall-blooming crocus that is planted in late summer. You can find saffron crocus bulbs on Amazon.

Ideally grown in full or partial sun on a fertile and well-drained soil, it produces purple flowers that contrast against its orange stamens and red saffron threads, only a few inches tall. Flowering in October, it is ideal for the front of a border and considered hardy in US zones 6-9.

Small trees for an autumn border

What's magical about this house is how palatable it is – it gives a sense of childhood home nostalgia.'

'Some design takeaways: don’t be afraid to layer patterned furniture, use more than one type of drapery in a room, and mix in heirloom pieces that tell a story,' she suggests. 'Slipcovered furniture also plays a huge role; it instantly makes a house feel approachable and homey. These film-inspired interiors tap into our sense of nostalgia, which is exactly what makes them so inviting.'

That’s exactly the feeling I want to carry throughout my home this season – a space that feels lovingly lived-in.

Pantone may have dubbed Peach Fuzz the official Color of the Year, but 2024 belonged – culturally, if not chromatically – to Brat Green. The acid-sick, highlighter-adjacent yellow-green was popularized by Charli XCX’s Brat era and, much like the album, delivered maximalist club-kid chaos to the power of 12. But if you loved it for its confidence – or even if you didn’t – chartreuse, its calmer, arguably more design-literate cousin, is back. And this time, the electric color trend isn't peaking for summer. It’s cozying up for fall.

‘As the weather turns colder and we lose the green outdoors, chartreuse can keep things feeling fresh and alive, even when it’s dismal out the window,’ says New York–based interior designer Tara McCauley (and self-proclaimed Charli XCX fan). ‘I loved seeing bold Brat Green everywhere last year, but that was really more of a lime, less chartreuse – chartreuse skews more yellow.’

Chelcie Eastman and Gray Benko of Magnolia Network’s Happy to Be Home – and the lifestyle brand Gray Benko Home – are equally bullish on the interior design trend's return. ‘Chartreuse has this instant energy to it,’ says Gray. ‘After the last few years of softer palettes, people are craving something that feels alive and optimistic. For fall, when homes tend to lean darker and cozier, chartreuse brings that unexpected spark. It wakes up a room and keeps it from feeling heavy.’

‘Chartreuse is not shy. It needs to be used intentionally,' adds Chelcie. 'We think of it as a rockstar accent color. A patterned wallpaper, a single chair in velvet, or even a stripe can completely transform a space.’

And while it’s having a moment for fall color trends 2025, like Brat Green did last summer, chartreuse is nothing new. ‘When I think of chartreuse, I think of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, Emilio Pucci’s bold fashion of the 60s, or its presence in pop culture during the 90s and 2000s, from The Fresh Prince to Britney Spears’ iconic VMA performance with an albino python,’ says Houston-based designer Sherrell Neal. ‘For me, it is very much nostalgic.’

Still, she’s particularly interested in how the room color is being used today. ‘When used as draperies, it reads as confident and collected, never accidental,’ Sherrell explains. She’s already eyeing green paints like Benjamin Moore’s Citrus Burst in high-gloss lacquer behind built-ins, or Farrow & Ball’s Green Ground paired with floral chintz. ‘To cozy it up during winter, I’d balance it with inky navy, deep espresso, or even chalky mauve.’

Linda Eyles of Linda Eyles Design points out we’ve been seeing chartreuse every fall – we just weren’t naming it. ‘Chartreuse is easy to use since it is found in nature – think Concord pears or Aspens turning from green to gold in the fall, and green goes well with most any color.’

Unlike Brat, this isn’t a gimmick. Chartreuse, with its decades-deep resume of cultural comebacks, isn't even really a trend at all – more of a sharp, versatile tool that we can leverage during the dark days (a.k.a. fall). ‘We love using it in stripes, florals, and big bold prints,’ say Chelcie Eastman and Gray Benko. ‘It works just as well alongside antiques as it does with modern lines or even coastal details. That range makes it feel fresh every time.’

Gray and Chelcie are doubling down on decorating with green this season – they’ve actually introduced chartreuse in both their new wallpaper and fabric lines with Milton & King, launching this October. 'You will also see it showing up in a number of the homes we have been designing this year,' says Gray.

Call it Brat Green’s grown-up sister. Or don’t. But do call it back.

Despite having a winter birthday, I am a summer baby in spirit and really struggle with the turn of the season when my home sinks into darkness and catches a chill.

So this fall, in order to combat my home decor seasonal affective disorder, I'm looking to carry some echoes of the summer through to cozy season with a few styling tweaks to the summer decor trends I've been loving this year.

While summer is all about lightness and a connection to the outdoors, fall trends demand something softer, warmer, and better suited for cozy nights in. Rather than starting from scratch with all new fall decor, this September, I’m looking to three of my favorite interior design trends from 2025: butter yellow, tiny florals, and gingham print, and reimagining them for fall.

Our homes don’t need to reinvent themselves every three months. It's a little much.

This rolling approach means I can keep the fresh, joyful spirit of my summer decor, but reinterpret it in a way that feels appropriate once the days shorten and the evenings draw in. It’s a way to honor the trends I loved all summer long, while still making my space feel in step with the warmth and richness of fall design.

Here's how I'm doing it.

1. Butter yellow

Butter yellow decor was everywhere this summer, and I couldn’t resist inviting it in to soften up my home and the plethora of neutrals. It’s cheerful without being loud, and it instantly made rooms feel lighter and more inviting.

Now that fall is here, I don’t want to let go of that sunshine glow – but I am shifting the way I decorate with yellow. Instead of airy linens or butter yellow ceramics, I’m leaning into a richer vibe with cozy ochre textiles, layered gold lighting, and warm-toned mustard accessories that feel seasonally appropriate.

It's one of those shades that transitions beautifully into fall because there are so many colors that go with butter yellow, and it pairs so well with richer earth tones. Think terracotta, olive, or deep chocolate brown – it suddenly feels autumnal. For me, I'll be pairing my pale yellow accents with rustic woods, clay vases, and heavier knit throw blankets.

The trick to making summer trends work in autumn is all about layering. If a palette or pattern feels too light, ground it with deeper tones and textures that anchor it in the season.

2. Tiny florals

Florals are a year-round classic, but this summer they were scaled down into sweet, classic, tiny floral patterns that felt straight out of a countryside cottage. I embraced them in table linens, small upholstery details, and even framed prints.

And as fall rolls in, I’m not giving them up; I’ll just be layering them differently. In my bedroom, instead of styling ditsy florals with white bed linens and linen drapes, I’m opting for ruddier hues and grounding my floral decor with heavier fabrics like velvet and wool.

And for spaces like the dining room or living room, I'll pair floral napkins with an aubergine tablecloth or a tiny floral pillow next to a boucle pillow and a dark wood side table. The key to making this spring-like print in fall is balancing its delicate nature with depth and texture.

3. Gingham

From picnic blankets to table linens, decorating with gingham has long been associated with summer. It's light, breezy, endlessly nostalgic, and brings an easy charm to every corner of the home.

As the days shorten, I don’t want to pack it away just yet. Instead, I’m letting this summer staple linger, restyled in ways that feel more appropriate for fall. Think deeper colorways, heavier plaid alternatives, and layering alongside moodier prints to warm up a bright sofascape or bed styling.

In summer, gingham feels playful and casual, but in fall, it can transition to feel traditional and preppy – especially when you pair it with darker palettes or incorporate it into cozy, layered vignettes inspired by the Ralph Lauren aesthetic.

The key to longevity with interior design trends is reimagining what you already love, in a new context.

As I’ve set about restyling my home for the new season ahead, I’ve realized that fall decorating doesn’t have to mean a total reset. By carrying forward just a few small tokens of summer, I’ve been able to hold onto the lightness I loved, while embracing the warmth and comfort that fall naturally brings.

When it comes to fall it can be easy to slip into the traditional color palettes of the season, which is a wonderful way to embrace the colors of nature. But, this fall I've got my eye on something a little different in the form of maximalist table decor.

While I generally think of fall table decor ideas as subtle and natural with earthy hues, I was recently inspired by Eva Sonaike's color-clashing and storied African-inspired table and wondered how I could recreate something as bold, energetic and playful at home. It's all about dopamine decor ideas. Fall abounds with rich colors and botanical motifs, so there's no reason why that can't be brought into seasonal tables with more maximalist tableware.

I love a bold print and a contrasting color palette, so, I've been shopping around for maximalist fall table decor that strikes the balance between playfulness and elegance. I'll be making use of my colorful summer outdoor table linens, but I'm also on the lookout for glassware and crockery in vibrant jewel tones, and fun, quirky pieces that create talking points amongst my guests.

Dopamine decor might be all about bold prints, but you can always put a timeless spin on it – I've been taking plenty of inspiration from the heritage maximalist trend recently.

New York City is, in many ways, a cabinet of curiosities. I’m reminded of this every time I step outside – a filming for Devil Wears Prada 2, at least three parades, a bodega cat gone rogue. You never quite know what the city’s going to serve. That same offbeat, maximalist magic is what inspired Anthropologie’s latest lighting collaborator, Merve Kahraman – an Istanbul-born, Milan-and-London-trained designer now running her namesake studio in the most unpredictable place on earth.

‘New York City is a place of endless inspiration for me,’ Merve tells me. ‘NYC itself is a mix of everything – the people, the architecture, the energy – each with its own layers, patterns, and juxtapositions.’

Merve Kahraman's Anthropologie collection – a curated lineup of lighting ideas including a chandelier, sconce, pendant, and two table lamps – captures a snapshot of the city during one very specific moment: the transition into fall, which she says is her favorite time in the concrete jungle.

‘My favorite season here is fall, when, after the hot summer malaise, the city comes alive again. The autumn colors unfold against the concrete backdrop, creating striking contrasts,’ Merve muses.

You can feel that tension – soft and structural, glam and grounded – in living room lighting ideas like the Floral Glass Chandelier, available in a painterly mix of honey yellow, forest green, terracotta, and gray-blue with polished brass. It’s her take on Central Park’s turning leaves and strange, beautiful botanicals – a kind of urban fairytale rendered in glass.

The lighting collection is aptly dubbed 'Cabinet of Curiosities,' and it’s every bit as whimsical as it sounds. Checkerboard meets rattan. Polished meets playful. You don’t often see these ‘city-like’ materials paired with something as earthy as rattan – let alone in a bordeaux-and-cream fall color palette – but somehow, it all just works.

‘I think it’s a very timeless combination,’ she says of her ceramic, city-coded table lamps. ‘I paired bold colors like dark green and bordeaux with cream and rattan, which creates a cozy yet cool feeling. It almost feels like a whimsical little gnome character – entertaining its surroundings and lifting the mood.’

The collection's name wasn’t purely for aesthetics, either. ‘I’ve always loved the book Cabinet of Natural Curiosities by Albertus Seba, who was a pharmacist, zoologist, and collector,’ Merve explains. ‘I wanted to create my own version of curiosities through these lamps. I imagined each piece as a living character, with its own personality and purpose.'

'A chandelier, for example, might bloom like a glass flower, radiating soft, colored light like petals unfolding,' she adds. 'Or a table lamp might take the form of a magical mushroom, quietly illuminating its surroundings.’

Fitting, seeing as the city has no shortage of characters – and now, your home can play one too. For anyone who’s ever wanted to channel New York’s shift into fall without stepping outside, this 'Cabinet of Curiosities' makes a compelling case.

Part of the magic of living in New York is seeing the world with childlike eyes – everything’s in flux, which means everything feels new. And big. But how do you bottle that feeling at home? How do you make interior design feel more curious?

‘First, I think we need to reactivate our curiosity toward life – like children do,’ Merve says. ‘Then, we should choose each piece for our home with that same enthusiasm. Forget about interior design trends and focus on what you genuinely enjoy seeing every day in your space.’

In other words: get weird, stay playful, and shop like someone who still believes their lamp might come to life.

Red has ruled interiors for the past year, but as we step into fall, I can’t help noticing a new shade on everybody's lips. Orange, in all its warming, glowing iterations, has stepped up to take red's place as the most talked-about color.

Of course, as we start to welcome fall color schemes into our homes, orange's warmth feels particularly relevant now. And where red can sometimes feel dominating, decorating with orange softens the effect without losing impact – it has that same punch as red gives, but it feels softer and more approachable.

'Orange is absolutely stepping into the spotlight as the new red,' says House of Hive's Kailee Blalock. 'It’s a surprisingly versatile color, much more adaptable than people realize.' And as I’ve started spotting orange everywhere – from new-in fall trends to Taylor Swift’s upcoming album – it’s hard to ignore the feeling that this fiery shade is really about to have its moment.

Is orange the new red for fall 2025?

One of the biggest color trends in design over the past year has been the rise of unexpected red theory – a trend coined on TikTok that took over our homes and wardrobes and proved just how powerful a single, bold hit of color can be.

Red accents popped up everywhere, from glossy side tables to lacquered accessories, and the message was clear: red had claimed its place as the most daring, exciting color in interiors. But as we move into fall, I’m noticing a new hue that feels better suited to the season ahead.

What makes orange so exciting is the way it takes everything red offers – energy, vibrancy, drama – and makes it softer.

'I definitely think we’re seeing a bit of a comeback for orange in interiors after it fell by the wayside with its avocado green pair of the 70s or full Tuscan treatment from the 90s,' says Courtnay Tartt Elias of Creative Tonic Design. 'I love the rich quality of a terracotta hue (still often paired with green!) paired with crisp white linens in a bedroom and linear accents to keep the space from reading too retro or Tuscan!'

'Orange is emerging as a warmer, less intense alternative to red, yet no less impactful. It brings a sense of optimism and introduces a more playful, approachable tone,' says Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish. 'Where red can feel formal or dramatic, orange comes across as fresh, energizing, and unexpectedly sophisticated when used with intent.'

Of course, the rise of orange always comes at this time of year. From late summer sunsets to pumpkin spice, fall decor is synonymous with rusty shades that mimic the falling leaves outside.

'Orange feels especially relevant at the moment, particularly as we look towards autumn,' agrees designer Lauren Gilberthorpe. 'Where red can sometimes dominate a scheme, orange brings a softer warmth and a natural connection to the landscape.'

But there's also another culprit behind the trend: Taylor Swift's 'orange era'. After announcing her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, is on its way, Taylor also dropped hints that this record was going to be her era of orange. And the internet has been obsessed with pops of orange ever since.

And while Taylor chose a palette of vibrant orange tones, there are plenty of shades that have their own personality and effect on a room – from glowing amber and playful tangerine to rich terracotta and deep chestnut.

Michael Rolland, paint expert at The Paint Shed, pointed out just how much interest there is in these warmer tones right now. 'Chestnut paint colors were searched for over 10,000 times in July 2025 alone, showing a clear appetite for warm, toasty tones that bring the richness of autumn’s roasted nuts to the home,' he explains, suggesting Little Greene's Muscovado as a great shade to try. 'Whether through chestnut-toned paint or chestnut wood features, this rich, indulgent colour brings warmth and richness to a room, while subtly recalling one of autumn’s favourite sweet treats.'

Designer Molly Torres Portnof of DATE Interiors also leans toward the deeper end of the spectrum: 'I love incorporating orange hues since they often make a space feel warm, cozy, and inviting. While there’s definitely a place for bright orange, I typically favor amber and brown orangey tones, since they pair so well with neutrals and blues.'

'I love pairing burnt or terracotta shades with deep navy or soft neutrals, they instantly lift a space while maintaining balance and elegance,' adds Caroline Milns. 'It’s a color that beautifully bridges the classic and contemporary.'

Orange doesn’t have to stand alone; it’s a surprisingly versatile team player, and there are plenty of colors that go with orange. Pair it with deep blues, greens, or charcoals for a bold contrast, or with creams, taupes, and natural timbers for a softer, grounded color combination.

'If you’re hesitant, start with a muted or burnt orange, which feels warm but not overwhelming,' suggests Kailee. 'Orange can even function like a neutral; it’s softer and more approachable than red.'

Texture in interiors is often what makes orange feel at home. 'What makes orange so versatile is how well it responds to texture,' adds Lauren Gilberthorpe. 'A rust-toned velvet cushion against natural oak, or a terracotta wall offset by a sheer linen curtain, creates a space that feels layered and inviting.'

'Burnt orange and terracotta tones such as Farrow & Ball’s Red Earth or Marmelo work beautifully with natural timbers and stone. For something fresher, Edward Bulmer's Malahide has a brightness that pairs surprisingly well with warm neutrals and off-whites,' she suggests.

Nina Lichtenstein adds: 'Texture plays a key role in making orange feel intentional rather than overwhelming. Matte plaster walls, velvet upholstery, leather accents, and woven rugs add depth and balance, allowing the color to pop without dominating the room.'

The key to using orange is finding the right balance. It’s a powerful shade, but with thoughtful styling, it can transform a room without overwhelming it. For me, orange shines brightest when it’s layered through textiles, furniture, or accessories to add hints of warmth, rather than splashed across walls.

Designer Jeanne Barber of Camden Grace Interiors agrees, telling me: 'The warm undertone in orange lends itself to cozy dining rooms or other spaces where people gather and eat; in fact, I love orange so much I incorporated squash-colored chairs around my own dining table.'

'When layered through textiles, artwork, or accents, orange adds a dynamic vibrancy that feels both current and enduring,' adds Caroline. A burnt-orange throw, a velvet cushion here or there, or even ceramics in rustic clay tones can bring just the right amount of richness to a room to make it super cozy for fall.

As someone who fell hook, line, and sinker for unexpected red, I never thought I’d be drawn to orange. But it actually feels optimistic, versatile, and expressive, while still being surprisingly easy to live with. And while it doesn't signal the end of red, designers are certainly leaning into orange with added gusto this year. 'Orange is not necessarily replacing red, but it offers an earthier, more grounded way of bringing energy and color into the home,' adds Lauren.

I know for most people, September 1st marks the beginning of all things fall, from the cozy jumpers and spiced drinks to the colors and decor we fill our homes with. But each year, I'm always the last person clinging to the dregs of summer decorating.

This year has been no different – well, until designer Shea McGee shared her tips on how to elevate your fall decor, and the trends she mentioned have made me so excited to put away the summer pieces and refresh my spaces with moody fall designs.

And the best part? She hasn't recommended any of those seasonal cliches we are so used to seeing (and that can often bore me), instead showcasing classic patterns in rich colors, and subtle ways to elevate more functional rooms. My interest: piqued!

4 ways to elevate your home for fall, according to Shea McGee

New seasons are always an exciting time, with different materials, colors, and designs at the forefront of our home decor. But there's something about fall trends that has everyone more excited than any other time of the year (excluding Christmas, of course).

'Transitioning from summer to fall always inspires a fresh perspective at home. This season, we’re embracing some of our favorite designs with a refined, traditional approach,' Shea notes in her post.

From classic patterns to tactile materials you can bring into every room, these are the 4 approaches Shea recommends if you want to create an on-trend and elevated look with your fall decor this year.

1. Introduce seasonal patterns to cozy spaces

Classic, traditional prints and patterns are big news for fall 2025, and they are a chic way to elevate your rooms for the coming months. In particular, Shea is announcing plaids and stripes as the patterns of the season.

'By layering plaids and stripes in new ways, you can infuse your own personality into spaces in a playful mix or incorporation of pattern. After all, it's not just in the details – it's what we do with them,' writes Shea.

Think throw pillows, blankets, bedding, and even lighting in these timeless patterns. This particular trend focuses on soft furnishings, but you can also bring it into other areas of decor, such as a vase filled with foliage or towels hanging in more functional rooms.

2. Elevate your kitchen with glass details

Decorating for fall doesn't need to be big on pattern, color, or obvious decor. Sometimes, the most subtle details can make a big difference, especially when it comes to decorating your kitchen.

'We love the simplicity that glass adds to vignettes,' she notes. 'It's a charming blend of both closed and open storage, giving an extra layer to styling while keeping things contained and organized.'

There are a few ways to bring glass accents into your space. In a kitchen, pretty drinking glasses displayed on a shelf, a glass vase at the center of a kitchen island, or even a glass countertop lamp for added ambiance can be more impactful than you might think.

In cozier rooms, a glass side table, candlesticks, or even a light fixture in this delicate material can add a new look to your space without spending a fortune. It's about tweaking those details that really elevate the finish of your design.

3. Bring in tactile materials

We often talk about texture in interior design. Particularly those that bring a more tactile element to a space and prevent it from feeling flat and uninspiring. For Shea, this fall is all about embracing travertine decor.

'The natural texture and imperfections of travertine are part of what draws us to this beautiful stone. It feels almost vintage, and if you know us at all, you know we love an old-meets-new look,' Shea explains.

Now, this doesn't mean ripping out your kitchen countertops and fitting in new travertine ones. It's more about small decor items, like a bowl on your coffee table, pendant lights above an island, or statement bookends on your open shelving.

4. Embrace the moodier hues of the season

Perhaps my favorite thing about the fall season, moody colors truly come into their own. They are rich and all-encompassing, instantly giving your home a cozy feel, yet feeling ever so elegant and elevated.

And Shea agrees: 'One of the best ways to infuse warmth into your spaces is through palette. In many ways, it establishes the tone of the room and is the base for layers and details that give depth to your space.'

I love rich burgundy and deep shades of brown in my home, but any dark hue, such as blue, greens, and even accents of black, signals a much cozier atmosphere. I'm tempted to do a full repaint of my small bathroom, but smaller swaps like rugs, upholstery, artwork on the walls, and even table displays can be just as impactful.
