Design and First Impressions

I unbox countless pieces of cookware and appliances a month, so the simpler the packaging, the better.

The Falcon Enamelware Bake set arrived in a simple cardboard box, with cardboard wraps to hold everything in place. It took me a matter of seconds to have everything out, and less than a few minutes to have all the packaging cleared away.

Enamel, unlike cast iron, does not need any prep, so besides a quick wipe-out to remove any dust, they were ready to use from the get-go. This is another big win in my book.

The classically designed trays are all rectangular in shape, just varying in size. There is something for every occasion here, from single servings to hosting dishes or meal prep. I found a way to use every size in the set quite easily. I love the fact that they safely nest together without the risk of scratching, for easy storage in my small kitchen.

Cooking Performance

Generally speaking, enamelware is great for just about anything from roasting meats to baking lasagne. It is safe for use in both the oven and freezer, and it can even be used for homemade ice cream.

I decided to put it through a string of sweet and savoury tests to get a feel for the true versatility:

Cinnamon Apple Crisp

Fall is finally rolling in, so I thought there was no better test than a hearty, homemade apple crisp. This autumnal recipe was the perfect big-batch test, acting as my offering for a family meal at the weekend.

I started by cooking down the apples and sultanas with spices and butter in my Le Creuset Pumpkin Cocotte (which I was also reviewing at the time), then added the filling to the ungreased tray, topped it with my oat and pecan crumble, and baked it.

The resulting crumble was perfectly cooked, bubbling all the way through to the middle with no burnt bits at the edges. The crumble was easy to transport as the tray is lightweight. I simply topped it with some aluminium foil and placed it gently in my car. On arrival, it was easy to serve, with no sticking or charred spots on the base. Everyone was very satisfied (with a small 'fight' over the final slice).

Chicken Pies

The smaller duo pans were perfect for individual pies. I settled on a chicken and leek pie.

I cooked the filling down in a separate pan before ladling into the ungreased tins. Before adding the pastry and baking, I let the filling cool and set it in the fridge. I loved that the enamelware allowed for this versatility. They would be fantastic for preparing meals ahead for this very reason; for instance, if you know you have a busy night ahead but still want a hearty home-cooked meal.

I pulled the trays out later that night as the oven preheated, allowing them to come back closer to room temperature as I added the puff pastry tops to prevent thermal shock from cracking the glass. While enamelware is very durable, sudden temperature changes can cause fractures.

The resulting pies were perfectly cooked through, released easily, and were the perfect large portion for one. There were no scratches even after using metal utensils, and no cracks. I will absolutely classify these as a new meal prep essential.

Roasted Vegetables

Roasted vegetable couscous is a go-to mid-week recipe in my household; it packs plenty of nutrients into a dish that makes cleaning a kitchen after dinner a breeze.

After chopping up eggplant, zucchini, and bell pepper, and adding a tin of chickpeas, the vegetables are covered in oil and spices before heading to the oven for two 20-minute bouts.

They cooked as well as they do in my usual ceramic non-stick tray, with no sticking or burning (which is more than I can say for my old PFAS-based non-stick tray). Things were easy to stir partway through, and simple to serve.

Cake Test

Falcon Enamelware does not specifically advertise their trays as cake tins, but a class with a Le Creuset chef taught me that anything can become a cake tin.

After craving cinnamon rolls, but having none of the energy to make dough, I whipped up a quick cinnamon roll sheet cake, adding a thin batter to a tray and swirling in a cinnamon sugar paste. I heavily buttered the tray first to help limit sticking.

The sheet cake cooked quickly and evenly, with a little browning at the edges where the mix was spread a little too thinly (this is certainly user error in my rush for a sweet treat). It was quickly topped with glaze and left to cool to a more palatable temperature.

The cake did stick a little bit on this test, but it was not enough to ruin the sponge. The worst parts were the clumps of cinnamon butter which had sunk to the base, and the sugar had melted. I did have to use a knife to scrape these up when serving.

I think if I were to grease and flour the pan before baking next time, and be more cautious about keeping the cinnamon sugar paste at the top of the pan, I would have no issues with using this set for cake, either. It's truly versatile.

Cleaning, Storage and Maintenance

I will admit that I was nervous about cleaning the Falcon Enamelware Bake Set at first, as it is not naturally non-stick. That said, I have zero issues washing these dishes by hand.

They are dishwasher-safe, but lacking that appliance, I washed each with a soft sponge. From the roasted vegetables to the crumble to the cake batter debris, everything washed away with gentle dish soap and hot water. I had less hassle cleaning these than I have with any ceramic bakeware I have tried in the past. They were then left to air dry, but being so lightweight, they are easy to dry with a cotton dish towel, too.

Meal prepping is my superpower during these months, but making food in bulk can quickly become messy – particularly when it comes to portioning and finding food storage solutions that keep the whole process streamlined.

That’s perfectly suited to my preferences, but it may feel too low-profile for some sleepers. It’s also the best choice for stomach sleepers, as a flatter pillow helps prevent the neck from being pushed into an uncomfortable position.

Back sleepers, meanwhile, will likely benefit from the medium or firm support options, which provide more of the structure needed to keep the head and neck comfortably supported. If you fall somewhere between the two, the medium option offers a useful middle ground.

Perfectly soft and squishy, the Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow keeps me comfortable all night long, and I've not once woken up with neck or back pain since I started using it.

I'm not a particularly hot sleeper, but the hypoallergenic fill hasn't caused any overheating, either. This is particularly impressive as, while down is naturally temperature-regulating, synthetic alternatives often trap heat. I'd put this down to the fact that this pillow uses a fluffy, fibrous filling which enhances breathability, rather than a solid block of foam or something similar.

Either way, it's not marketed as a cooling pillow pick, and I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say it's actively cooling. That being said, the cotton sateen shell also works to wick away moisture as you rest. If, unlike me, you are a hot sleeper, I'd suggest something like the Sleep Number TrueTemp Plush Pillow instead.

The Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow boasts an average rating of 4.4 stars across 1,664 reviews on the Brooklinen site, with shoppers praising its comfort, support, and quality.

'A nice upgrade for everyday comfort,' reads one recent five-star review, left by Kristiina. 'I've always preferred the feel of down pillows, so I wasn't sure how a down alternative would compare, but this one completely exceeded my expectations. It's incredibly plush and has that soft, cloud-like feel I love, while still providing enough support to keep its shape throughout the night.

'The biggest difference I've noticed is that I no longer wake up needing to fluff or adjust my pillow to get comfortable. It stays supportive from the moment I fall asleep until I wake up.'

Another, from Natali, even goes as far as to call it the 'perfect pillow,' adding, 'Love the pillow − super comfortable and just like down. An actual down alternative for once. Love it!'

As with anything, there are a couple of more negative reviews, which mainly refer to the pillow being too flat, too squishy, and too thin. Of course, each sleeper's perfect pillow is entirely subjective − what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. Besides, it is available in three different supports, so there should be something suitable for everyone.

Others also mention that they were expecting more from a pillow at this price point, but I disagree. For a hypoallergenic pillow from a premium, well-rated brand like Brooklinen, I think $59 is more than fair.

If you're hesitant about investing, my best advice would be to always go into a store to see and feel them in person before purchasing. That way, you'll know exactly what you're getting to avoid any disappointment.

The Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow: Final Verdict

For sensitive sleepers and those looking to avoid animal-derived materials, you really can't go wrong with the Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow. The fill perfectly mimics the feel of traditional down, and the sateen cover is certified to meet the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, too. While that doesn't make it organic bedding, the fill is certified to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), to ensure it's ethically sourced and produced, and the whole pillow is certified free of any harmful substances.

I also appreciate how easy it is to wash, dry, and care for this pillow: Simply machine wash cold and tumble-dry low. Considering you should be washing your pillows every three to six months, this kind of convenience is particularly important.

I'd also be more than happy to pay full price for this pillow, though I have frequently seen it reduced in the bedding sales.

If I lost mine, or anything happened to it, I would be on the Brooklinen site ordering a new one the very next day, which speaks for itself. For that reason, my final verdict is nothing but positive − it's my perfect pillow for comfortable side sleeping.

It is perhaps no surprise that I have been itching to test the Le Creuset Signature Pumpkin Cocotte to see if the seasonal upgrade of the iconic Dutch oven lives up to the hype online.

The short answer? It is. If you love fall and cook or host regularly, it is absolutely worth treating yourself. That said, if I am being picky, it is slightly smaller than the standard Le Creuset Dutch ovens, and the ridged edges can be just a little fiddly at times. However, I would now easily class it as one of my most prized pieces of non-toxic cookware.

Design and First Impressions

If you are buying the Le Creuset Pumpkin Cocotte, it is (mainly) because of the aesthetic. Beneath it all, it is the same great heritage enameled cast iron as the other Le Creuset pieces, including the Modern Heritage Dutch Oven I reviewed earlier this year.

The pumpkin shape is certainly a novelty, and I am happy to say that it does not impact general performance.

It looks spectacular. The Dutch oven shape lends itself to pumpkin-fication, with the domed lid working perfectly to trap moisture for ultra-tender meats and stews, and fluffy breads. Note that it does need to be lined up perfectly ridge-for-ridge to sit flush with the base and ensure a seal. This can add a few seconds to general use. It's minor, but worth mentioning.

The curled pumpkin stem lid handle is another nice touch, especially in the gold finish. It is generally easy to wrap your fingers around to lift and manoeuvre; however, if you are using thick oven mitts, such as the Le Creuset oven mitts I have, it gets a little trickier. I didn't feel like I was going to drop it at any point, but I felt myself gripping a lot more firmly to ensure I did not.

If you are keen on using kitchenware as decor, this is a worthy choice for fall.

Cooking Performance

Having reviewed the Modern Heritage Dutch oven a few months ago, I found the Pumpkin Cocotte's performance comparable. As with any enameled cast iron Le Creuset piece, it heats evenly over low heat, maintains its temperature, and is relatively low-stick when oiled.

I tested similar recipes again to understand how the new shape and size affected the experience and results:

• Dutch oven bread: The Pumpkin Cocotte is uniquely shaped, and I was intrigued to see if the ridges would transfer onto a loaf of Dutch oven bread. My dough was slightly too small to get the full effect, but there was certainly evidence of the indentations from the Pumpkin ridges. The domed lid trapped moisture perfectly for the first half of the bake, and the bread base crisped beautifully. All in all, it was a deliciously airy loaf.
• Stewed apple: It would not be fall without an apple crisp. While testing some new baking trays, I used the Cocotte to cook down some apple chunks, sultanas, butter, sugar, and cinnamon for the filling. With the lid on, everything softened nicely and quickly, with nothing sticking or burning. I did find that stirring and scraping the edges of the pot was more difficult than in a flat-sided Dutch oven, however, meaning I had to scrape up and down, rather than sweeping round, to ensure no pieces were unmixed.
• Aubergine Tofu Stew: This is where I started to really notice the difference in capacity. The onion and aubergine cooked down nicely without sticking; however, scraping the pan once again felt a little fiddly. As the Cocotte slopes inwards towards the base, the large chunks also felt a little cramped. It transferred well to the oven, however, and the results were deliciously rich.
• Chicken Casserole: A classic test for any Dutch oven that enters my home, the smaller base was once again noticeable. I could only fit three large skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs comfortably in the base of the pot, compared to the four to six I have managed in other pots. It is safe to say that this Cocotte is best for serving up to four people comfortably, rather than a whole crowd. The stew cooked as well as it did in the Modern Heritage pot, with crispy skin and tender vegetables, and absolutely no sticking or burning. When serving, the ridges once again make it more awkward to fish all the sauce out, as I could not sweep the edges smoothly.

Cleaning, Storage and Maintenance

As with all Le Creuset cast iron, you need to hand wash the Pumpkin Cocotte. This helps to protect the enamel, the brilliant coloring, and the gold handle from damage. As it is slightly smaller, the Pumpkin is marginally lighter than the original Dutch ovens (and is some of the lightest cast iron on the market). That said, I have always found it easiest to leave it flat on the counter and fill it with soap and water, scrub it, and then empty it and repeat, rather than trying to hold it with just one hand to avoid slipping and dropping it.

The enamel cleans easily, although, as with serving, the raised ridges mean you cannot get an easy clean sweep around the edges, making the up-and-down technique best for getting all the nooks and crannies. It is not an overwhelming amount of extra effort, but worth noting. The lid is much the same. Once clean, hand-dry to prevent rust from forming on the rim.

Storing the Le Creuset Signature Pumpkin Cocotte is about as awkward as any heavy pot. You need to store it on a low shelf to prevent damaging your kitchen storage or dropping it when you take it out. You also cannot stack this pot, meaning you need to dedicate a chunk of space just for it. This is worth considering if you plan on only using the pot in the fall, unlike me, who plans to leave it on the stove year-round.

My Verdict: Should You Buy The Le Creuset Signature Pumpkin Cocotte?

If you love fall, pumpkins, or cozy seasonal cooking, I absolutely think that the Le Creuset Signature Pumpkin Cocotte is worth treating yourself to, or putting on your holiday gift list. It is a fun, novel addition to your seasonal cookware, is entirely non-toxic to help make a kitchen less toxic, and brings a smile to people's faces when you bring it to a fall table.

That said, it is a little smaller than a standard 5-quart Dutch oven, meaning it isn't the best for cooking for large crowds, and it is expensive ($395 at the time of writing) if you only plan to use it for a few months every year.

It is undeniably pretty, however, making a fantastic piece of seasonal decor that can also bake bread, slow-cook meats, produce bakes, soups and stews, and even display candy for Halloween.

I personally adore mine and have had a blast using it over the last few weeks. It's a piece I will cherish for decades to come.

It's easy to get carried away with the more aesthetic decisions, but the primary function of your pantry ideas is to create practical, usable storage – without that, even the most stylish pantry becomes another clutter zone.

The most successful designs balance style and practicality, and interior designers notice a few common pantry design mistakes that disrupt that balance. Here are the mistakes to avoid, and how you can fix them if they sound a bit too familiar.

1. Not Considering How You Need the Space to Function

The Mistake

A pantry design is only successful if it functions the way you need it to. Part of that is understanding how you live and use the space, but also whether you actually need a pantry, or whether your requirements are more aligned with a back kitchen. Start by noting the difference between a larder, pantry, and back kitchen, and which would add the most to your cooking space.

'There is currently a real trend for creating a back-of-house kitchen space, but we think this can sometimes muddy the purpose of the pantry. It needs to be designed either as a really good storage cupboard, or the space should be thought of more as a true back-of-house kitchen,' says Sophie Pringle, Founder of Pringle & Pringle.

'We are increasingly asked for a ‘pantry’ when what is really wanted is a back kitchen – somewhere to prepare food, house appliances, wash up and deal with the mess and overflow that comes with entertaining,' Anthony Earle, Creative Director at Artichoke, agrees. 'Trying to fit all of those functions into a small pantry can quickly make the room hot, cramped and rather impractical.'

The Fix

Before you start designing your pantry, determine how the space needs to function. If food storage is the priority, a pantry is the ideal solution, but if you want space for an extra sink, prep space, and large appliances, you'll need to plan for a larger back kitchen type of space.

If your needs align with a pantry, consider what you want to store and how you want to store it. Some items will need to be easily accessible, so storing them on open shelves within easy view will make day-to-day tasks more efficient.

'Think about the function first and design the space around how it will actually be used. Consider what you need to store, whether you want to hide small appliances, and how often you’ll be accessing the space, then make sure the layout, shelving and services are designed accordingly,' Sophie suggests.

2. Forgetting About Good Ventilation

The Mistake

A pantry is fundamentally a food storage solution, so airflow and maintaining conditions that keep food dry and fresh are really important. This isn't a storage closet, so don't treat it as such. Lack of ventilation encourages moisture build-up, which can cause food to go off (stagnant air becomes a breeding ground for mold), and can increase temperatures, leading to odors and stale food.

The Fix

The simplest fix is to add ventilation during the design process, whether it's wall vents or cutouts in your pantry doors to improve airflow. And location is key. 'Ideally, a really good pantry should also be positioned on an external wall, allowing for ventilation, particularly if it’s being used for food storage,' Sophie explains.

'Good airflow helps to keep the space cool and dry, which is important for storing food, and it is much easier to incorporate at the planning stage than to retrofit later. Ultimately, the pantry should be designed around function first, with the aesthetic details following from that.'

3. Choosing Quantity Over Quality of Storage

The Mistake

A pantry is a functional zone that should enhance a kitchen's flow and function, but successful storage is more about quality than quantity. Cramming in too many large shelves and hard-to-access cabinets will make finding and accessing the ingredients you need feel almost impossible.

'A common pantry design mistake, particularly in hard-working family kitchens where storage space is at a premium, is focusing exclusively on maximising the quantity of storage without thinking through the quality and types of storage that are going to both work well and look beautiful,' says Elizabeth Macfarlane of Macfarlane van der Heul

The Fix

Take the time to plan your pantry layout and the storage styles that make the most sense at each level. If you want to maximize height, you need to make sure you can actually reach the top shelves, so add a rolling ladder or fold-down step (this 3 Step Foldable Ladder from Amazon can be easily stashed away) to prevent baskets filled with ingredients you forget about and leave to go bad.

Take stock of what you need to access most regularly, and what you use only occasionally (such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or seasonal supplies) so you can prioritize the most accessible areas. Cereal, pasta, flour, and snacks – the food you reach for every day – should be stored at eye level so it's easy to grab. And if it's on open shelving, consider decanting into prettier containers, like these Dark Wood Lidded Canisters from Target or Crate & Barrel's Montana Glass Jars, for a more elevated and organized pantry.

4. Making Pantry Shelves Too Deep

The Mistake

Pantry shelving is one of the most practical storage types, but deep shelves quickly become almost impossible to access. 'Deep, evenly spaced shelves may look efficient on paper, but they often create wasted space and make it difficult to see what is stored behind the first row of items. Things inevitably get pushed to the back and forgotten,' says interior designer Vanessa Katzen.

'Avoid overly deep upper shelves, as it gets very hard to see what is on them,' adds George Miller, Designer at Neptune. Reaching the back of the shelves becomes difficult, and you inevitably end up knocking the items at the front, causing nothing but chaos and more mess.

The Fix

Plan pantry shelving around the items you need to store on them, rather than the other way around. 'I prefer to design pantry storage in layers, with shallower shelving for everyday items and deeper storage reserved for larger appliances, serving pieces and bulk goods,' says Vanessa.

'Incorporating drawers or pull-outs at lower levels also makes the full depth much more accessible. I also vary shelf heights rather than spacing everything uniformly. The goal is not simply to fit as much as possible into the pantry, but to make everything easy to see, reach, and put away. When storage is designed around how you actually use it, you often need less space than you think.'

5. Adding Too Many Cabinet Doors

The Mistake

Your pantry isn't a kitchen, so the pros and cons of open shelving don't apply in the same way. A pantry is function first, and filling these small spaces with lots of cabinets makes accessibility difficult – trying to open different cabinet doors will not only make it tricky to find what you need, but it instantly intrudes on the small amount of walkway you have.

'The point of a pantry is to maximize function and storage for your kitchen in a hidden but easily accessible space. It's supposed to be hardworking, not make you work harder,' says Leah Hook, Founder and Principal Designer at Gray Oak Studio. 'You don't want to walk from your kitchen to a separate room and then have to open another series of doors or drawers to get what you need.'

The Fix

Open shelving at floor level can feel messy and a bit inconvenient, so it makes sense to add some closed storage. Consider what you want to store here – drawers maximize a deep space, allowing you to access items stored towards the back.

'A combination of drawers and open shelving can work really well, so that the things you use most are easy to reach and you can actually see what you have. I also like to keep some of the prettier everyday items on display rather than hiding absolutely everything away. And don’t be afraid to decorate it,' says interior designer Laura Stephens.

If you're storing additional appliances you don't use regularly or seasonal accessories, cabinetry probably makes more sense. But instead of filling your pantry with doors, swap them with a cabinet skirt – Lulu & Georgia's Painterly Stripe Linen fabric is a great option, or for a ready-to-hand design, try Etsy's Striped Cotton Cabinet Skirt. 'Curtained under-counter storage [is great] for hiding away bulkier and less attractive items – the curtain is economical, adds visual interest, and contrasts nicely with the cabinetry in the main kitchen,' adds Elizabeth.

6. Excluding Useable Countertop Space

The Mistake

Pantry designs often focus on storage – as they should. But with so much attention on shelving, drawers, and cabinets, it's easy to forget that a countertop has a use in these spaces, too. 'A pantry without counters is storage without further utility,' Leah explains.

'You want a landing surface to organize your equipment or food and stage your plans, especially during messy kitchen activities. When you pull down the bin of flour, you want a place to put it within arm's reach. You don't want to go back and forth to the kitchen counter when you need to place something down.'

The Fix

The fix is simple – add a countertop, even if it's just a small run along the shortest wall. 'We always encourage clients to design in a generous counter, which gives the pantry an invaluable working surface for unpacking groceries or preparing food,' Anthony says.

It's a detail that turns a simple storage space into a functional pantry. You can bring in the same materials and palette as the kitchen for continuity, or use it as an opportunity to add a different material that didn't make it into your main kitchen design. 'Whether you choose butcher block, stone, stainless steel, or tile, 24" deep countertops at waist height are critical to the overall use of the room,' Leah adds.

7. Overlooking Pantry Lighting

The Mistake

You can spend hours meticulously planning custom storage and a beautiful color scheme, but if you ignore pantry lighting, you won't be able to see any of it. Relying on a single overhead light casts shadows and fails to illuminate your actual storage.

'Make sure you consider lighting – shelves create a lot of shadows from a single overhead pendant and make it hard to see what is on them,' says George. Plus, a badly lit room instantly feels uninviting – a pantry becomes pointless if you don't want to enter it.

The Fix

Approach it like you would your kitchen lighting. An overhead light is fine, but layer it with lower-level lighting designed for each storage area. 'LED strip lighting can help you have light exactly where you need it,' says George. 'We like to layer the lighting in a pantry the way we would in any other room,' says Elizabeth. 8. Not Thinking About How the Pantry Color Works With the Main Kitchen

The Mistake

Function is the priority in a pantry, but it should still feel like a beautiful space that adds something special to your kitchen. 'One of the biggest mistakes is treating the pantry as purely functional and forgetting that it is still part of your home. It’s very easy to fill a pantry with shelves and cupboards and end up with a rather cold, utilitarian space, when it can be a lovely opportunity to introduce color and personality,' says Laura.

The Fix

There are different routes you can take with your pantry design depending on how it reads with the rest of your kitchen scheme – choose a warm neutral color and let texture do the talking, such as wall paneling or decorative millwork. Alternatively, you can color-drench your pantry in a deeper hue as a small confidence zone in the corner of a more neutral kitchen. Try to keep it simple and avoid using too many different colors and patterns – the storage still needs to be easily seen.

'A pantry is a wonderful place to have a little fun with color because it’s often a smaller, more enclosed space. Beautiful joinery, a lovely paint color, and good lighting can make it feel like a considered room rather than an afterthought. The practical elements still need to work, of course, but there’s no reason a pantry can’t have the same sense of character and joy as the rest of the house,' says Laura.

9. Choosing Bold Design Over Function

The Mistake

Following on from color, too many busy patterns or different colors can make a small pantry feel chaotic. 'There is so much color going on with food, spices and herbs that this space is the most important for a well-considered color scheme. It can quickly feel busy and cluttered, so take your time. Don’t rush this area,' says Katherine Channell, Founder and Head Designer at Katherine Jane Design Studio.

The same applies to tiles – on the walls and floors. 'A pantry is one of those spaces where people can be tempted to over-design the floor because the footprint is small. A highly patterned tile, a contrasting border and a completely different material can all sound appealing in isolation, but combined with shelving, cabinetry, jars, bottles and all the visual activity of a working pantry, the room can very quickly become busy,' adds Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra.

The Fix

The easiest way to fix this pantry design mistake is to take a more pared-back approach. In a tiny space, avoid pattern altogether, but in a pantry that can handle it, keep the colors and patterns tonal so it feels calm and considered. 'My solution would be to come up with three or four colors max,' Katherine suggests. 'I love using warm tones for this area, accessorising with wood and then often a pop of color. This allows you to bring in wicker baskets, which are functional and beautiful.'

For the floors, take a more subtle approach. 'If the pantry sits directly off the kitchen, continuing the same material through both spaces is particularly effective,' says Grazzie. 'It makes the architecture feel calmer and more intentional, and it allows the pantry to feel like part of the kitchen rather than somewhere that has been decorated afterwards.'

10. Forgetting to Plan Electrical Outlets

The Mistake

A pantry has evolved from being a simple food storage space to a more functional food prep zone. For many people, this includes housing small appliances and often using them within the pantry to avoid cluttering kitchen surfaces. And forgetting to include electrical outlets will become an issue down the line – even if it's just to charge up cordless devices or plug in additional lighting.

The Fix

During the design process, when you're planning out where different storage needs to be located, plan for electrics. Ideally, one above the countertops within easy access, and another hidden within closed storage if required. Try to take an elevated appraoch – outlet switches make a difference, so choose stylish designs that fit into your scheme. A pantry is a wonderful feature to have in your kitchen, so make the most of the space by getting the design right. Start with the functional details, like storage styles and lighting schemes, then plan for the visual elements that give it character. 'Have fun and remember it’s not just storage,' Katherine adds. 'It’s an extension of your home, so treat it with importance!'

While we’ve all filled vases with fresh blooms to brighten our nightstands and shelves, there’s an even easier, more affordable way to bring the freshness of the outdoors inside.

Adding sprigs of fresh rosemary is a simple, little-known way to make a bedroom smell like a luxurious hotel suite, without the luxury price tag.

'One of the easiest and most affordable ways to scent a room is by adding fresh rosemary sprigs into a jar of water,' says Jennifer Pressimone, Holistic Clinical Aromatherapist and Founder of JennScents. 'It is a non-electric option with nothing to turn on or off, and no stimulating lights or humming sound,' unlike even the best essential oil diffusers. 'Just the pure fresh herbal scent of rosemary that brings nature inside and has a visual aesthetic appeal.'

As Jennifer points out, it's also a gentler scented option than, say, candles, and is therefore better suited to those with strong fragrance sensitivities. It costs very little to try, too.

'Most people associate rosemary as a culinary spice in the kitchen,' she continues. 'It brings fond memories of making certain food dishes with family, and it puts a genuine smile on your face.'

And, in terms of non-toxic ways to make your home smell nice, you couldn't get more natural. 'It's just basic ingredients you have on hand, which is the part I care the most about,' adds Michelle Simmons, Home Fragrance Expert and Founder and CEO of Slow North. '"Fragrance" on a label can legally hide hundreds of ingredients under that one word,' she warns.

The Benefits of the Aroma of Rosemary

The benefits of adding this humble herb to your sleep space extend far beyond helping avoid any bedroom scenting mistakes.

'Rosemary is best known to support focus, concentration, and alertness,' explains Jennifer. 'Research studies show it has promising circulatory benefits to sharpen memory and mental clarity.

'I also find it helpful to clear up sinus congestion, enhance deep breathing, and boost energy.'

Despite its ability to make you feel energized and revitalized, rosemary has also been found to help you sleep better, too. In a study of 63 participants, inhaling the herb, coupled with lavender, was observed to improve cognitive function, sleep quality, and reduce anxiety levels. So, you could always add lavender alongside the rosemary (or grow your own lavender indoors in your bedroom).

How to Prepare a Jar of Rosemary and Water

It couldn't be any easier to introduce fresh rosemary to your bedroom ideas. Of course, you can just add some sprigs to a vase, but to really make the most of this fragrant herb, Jennifer shares her method:

'Choose a four-ounce or eight-ounce glass jar with a cap,' she says, like these Mason Jars with Airtight Silver Lids, available at Amazon. 'Fill the jar about three-quarters full of water and add in four to six fresh rosemary sprigs.' Michelle recommends rolling them between your palms until you can smell them on your hands beforehand, to better release the oils. 'Cap the jar and let it sit on a countertop for one to two hours so the rosemary can infuse into the water.'

Then, when you want to enjoy the scent, simply open the jar and leave it open on the counter or table. 'Keep out of direct sunlight to preserve the fresh scent longer,' she adds.

For a brighter, more vibrant scent, Michelle also recommends adding a strip of lemon peel. Citrus may be a mood-boosting aroma typically associated with spring, but there's no reason not to bring those same notes into fall.

I am thrilled to say that the Halo Core proved me very wrong. It excelled at cake batters, whipping cream, and bread dough, and didn't complain once in the process. Design and First Impressions

The Halo Core is a compact mixer, in stand mixer terms. It is a lot shorter than my KitchenAid Artisan Plus, which I reviewed a few months ago, making it ideal for smaller kitchens. Besides this, it looks as you would expect it to, with a stainless steel mixing bowl that slots into place by twisting into the base, a tilt-head that unlocks with a simple latch trigger at the side, and a speed dial on the top.

Unlike mixers such as the KitchenAid, the Ooni Halo Core does not have the option for added accessories such as pasta rollers or meat grinders, limiting the machine to strictly mixing. However, for a home baker, this is all you need. It does one thing and does it exceptionally well.

What surprised me most was that the attachments, be it the dough hook or the paddle beater, do not rotate around the bowl like a traditional stand mixer. Instead, the attachment spins, but the bowl rotates around it. This gives the mixer more stability for handling tougher and thicker mixes. For a mixer that is prepped for making bread and pizza, this is perfect.

Because of this, the splash guard attaches itself to the main head of the unit once you have screwed the attachments into place. This worked perfectly well; however, I will note that, unlike the rest of the machine, the guard feels a little flimsy. At first, the hinges would hold the flap open so I could use both hands to add ingredients, but over time it started falling shut every time, making adding flour more difficult.

Performance

To thoroughly test the stand mixer, I tested four of my favorite recipes that would assess the appliance's ability to tackle everything from thick dough to delicate cream:

The Cake Tests

Advertised as 'an everyday all-rounder', I couldn't not test out cake mixes in the Halo Core. I started with a light Victoria sponge recipe (my go-to for seeing how a mixer handles delicate mixes that need to be folded to retain a fluffy texture). The mixer handled this easily. With over 20 precision speed settings, the lowest settings mimicked hand folding pretty well, keeping the batter nice and light. The angled silicone edge beater scraped the bowl continuously as it mixed, too, so nothing was missed. The resulting cake was lovely and light, with no lumps or clumps.

The next cake mix was a much bigger test. The Ooni Halo Core is designed for heavier mixes such as pizza dough, so I wanted to see how it would handle the thickest cake batter of all – fruit cake.

I carted the mixer to my mom's house, where we whipped up a small Christmas cake. We make seven to nine of these a year, all hand-mixed, and our arms are in agony afterwards; however, we have never met a mixer that could withstand the weight of the fruit. The Halo Core changed this.

It beat the mix without complaint, and folded in the fruit evenly as we ladled it in, the head not bobbing or rocking once. While we are yet to eat the resulting cake (we allow them to mature between September and December), we did lick the bowl clean, and the cake batter was the lightest we have ever achieved.

In both instances, decanting the mixes was a little tricky as the bowl does not have a handle. I understand that this is because the bowl rotates on the mixer and it would get in the way, but it is a minor inconvenience I have to note. I wonder if a removable handle would fix this issue, making pouring batter from the bowl to the tin smoother, especially for those with dexterity issues.

The Whipped Cream Test

Quick and easy, every good stand mixer needs to be able to make a light, spreadable whipped cream to go in the center of my Victoria sponge.

The base of the mixing bowl is quite wide, so I worried that the whisks might struggle with the small amount of liquid, but sure enough, it whipped it up with minimal fuss.

The Bread Tests

Now for the real test. Ooni made their name with their portable pizza ovens, so the Halo Core has to handle dough well to be a success. I made two different breads for this test, a high-hydration foccacia and a hearty Dutch oven loaf, and the mixer handled both with grace.

What I love most about this machine is the included breaker bar. This metal stick attaches itself to the mixer head in front of the dough hook, and catches dough before it can climb too high up the hook and into the mixing mechanisms. It was a complete game changer for me, allowing me to knead dough without having to stop and start to push it all back into the bowl.

In both cases, the dough mixed quickly and evenly, although I did spot some flour being left behind on the edges of the bowl in both tests. The head of the stand mixer did not rock or bob once in the process, nor did the motor sound like it was struggling, as some standard mixers often can.

I also loved the included silicone lid, which fits neatly on top of the mixing bowl to make proofing simple. It formed a nice seal, was not difficult to fit, and was easy to clean.

The Cookie Test

Cookie dough was my final test, used to make a small skillet cookie. I was worried at first that the smaller mix would cause issues for the rotating bowl, as the butter and sugar clumped together and stuck against one edge. However, as I let the machine work, it softened everything nicely.

When adding the flour, nothing got stuck thanks to the silicone edge beater, and the chocolate chunks were neatly and evenly dispersed throughout.

After baking, the cookie was a deep golden color and was soft and tender in the center, not too tough or dense. With a scoop of ice cream, it was the perfect dessert.

Cleaning and Maintenance

All of the Ooni Halo Core Spiral Mixer accessories are dishwasher safe, but as I do not have one, I was stuck with hand washing. I am pleased to say that the stainless steel makes this process very easy, with dough melting away from the edges with a short hot-water soak, and releasing from the hook without a battle.

I also particularly loved the shape of the whisks, as without the classic balloon shape the edges were easy to wipe around, with no cream getting stuck in awkward corners. The silicone mixer was also easy to wipe clean, where I have previously had problems with other stand mixer silicone clinging to batter in awkward edges and corners. I didn't dread the post-baking cleanup once with the Ooni.

Storing this mixer is also easier than others. Due to its squat, compact design, it could slot more easily onto a low pantry or cabinet shelf. It is weighty, but lighter than a KitchenAid, making moving it relatively easy if you have the grip.

How The Ooni Halo Core Spiral Mixer Compares

I have tested both the new KitchenAid Artisan Plus and SMEG Forte Stand Mixer's as of late, and while I loved both, the Ooni Halo Core stands out easily, especially as they all sit around the same price tag (at the time of writing)

The KitchenAid Artisan is perfect for home bakers who need absolute precision with baking thanks to its half-fold speed, and it comes with the largest ecosystem of accessories from ice cream making to meat grinding of any other mixer on the market (the color options are also simply luxurious). The SMEG Forte, on the other hand, is a great, powerful mixer that limits concerns about burnout, with a chic retro design for those who want to prioritize aesthetics.

What the Ooni achieved that neither of the other machines did, however, is stable mixing with rocking and bobbing. If you frequently make dough or thick, heavy batters, you need the Halo Core. It does not protest when working heavy loads, and uses motor protection to prevent overheating. The smaller size also makes it a far more convenient option for those who cannot leave appliances on the counter all year round. It also has a lot more speed settings for all sorts of baking tasks.

Without a shadow of a doubt, if you bake at home and have the space and budget, you should buy the Ooni Halo Core Spiral Mixer.

This is especially true if you often make bread or pizza at home and need something that can handle tough dough without you fretting that the motor will burn out or the head will snap.

What Causes Yellow Staining on Pillows?

As Rechelle Balanzat, Founder and CEO of Juliette, an NYC-based premium laundry service, assures, 'Yellow staining on pillowcases is really common.'

While you sleep, your pillowcase absorbs sweat, body oils, saliva, and traces of the hair and skincare products applied before bed. 'Over time, all of that builds up in the fabric and can leave behind that yellow color,' she explains.

Given that pillowcases and pillows are often among the things we’re not washing enough, it’s little wonder that yellowing can seem almost inevitable.

'While pillowcases provide a protective barrier, these substances can still gradually transfer through the fabric and affect the pillow over time,' adds Drew Miller, Vice President at Sit 'n Sleep. 'For sleepers, this is also a reminder that pillows require regular care and replacement. Even with proper cleaning, pillows naturally collect oils, allergens, and moisture throughout their lifespan.'

How to Whiten Pillowcases

Whitening your pillowcases and other bedding can be as simple as reaching for two hardworking pantry staples: vinegar and baking soda. For this method, I’d recommend this affordable White Vinegar, available at Amazon, and ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, available at Walmart.

'Baking soda and white vinegar are commonly used household cleaning ingredients that can help refresh bedding materials,' explains Drew Miller. 'Baking soda can help absorb odors and loosen some residue, while vinegar can help break down certain types of buildup and mineral deposits.'

There’s an important catch, though: these ingredients work best separately, not together. 'When you mix the two, they basically cancel each other out, so the fizz isn’t really what’s cleaning your pillowcase,' advises Rechelle.

For a washable cotton pillowcase, she recommends soaking it in warm or hot water with around half a cup of baking soda for approximately 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then wash as normal with your usual detergent. If the care label allows it, you can add a cup of distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

'I wouldn’t pour the vinegar directly into the baking soda soak,' Rechelle cautions. Instead, using vinegar in laundry can help brighten and deodorize fabrics.

'And don’t put it straight into the dryer if you can still see the stain,' she adds. 'Heat can make stains harder to get out. I always recommend checking the care label first,' particularly when dealing with delicate fabrics. As Drew highlights, always make sure your pillowcases are completely dry before putting them back on the bed.

For a gentle, low-energy option, air-dry them on a Clothes Drying Rack, available at Amazon. Thorough drying helps prevent moisture buildup, which can contribute to mold, mildew, and further yellow staining. 'The best thing you can do is stay ahead of the buildup,' concludes Rechelle. 'Wash your pillowcases regularly and consider using a pillow protector. Once those oils sit in the fabric for a long time, they become much harder to remove.'

I own both the Hearth & Hand with Magnolia Cast Iron Dutch Oven from Target and the Our Place Perfect Pot from Amazon, so I know the benefits of both. The Our Place is lightweight and easy to handle, while my cast-iron pot has the heft and heat retention that make it ideal for slow cooking. That’s why ALDI’s new Crofton Dutch oven caught my eye.

At $29.99, it’s an affordable way to try cast-iron cooking without making a big investment. The green and cream versions are both priced at $29.99 and are due to be available from September 2.

That price is particularly appealing when you consider that similar cookware can cost considerably more. The Our Place Perfect Pot, for example, is $50, while a Le Creuset Dutch oven can run into the hundreds. And the colors make the ALDI versions even more appealing. The green and cream finishes have a refined, heritage feel that makes them look like cookware you’d happily leave on the stovetop.

Why Cast Iron Is Worth the Investment

The appeal of cast iron is really quite simple: it holds onto heat exceptionally well. Once the pot is hot, it stays hot, which is particularly useful when you're cooking something slowly and want a steady temperature throughout.

That's where a Dutch oven earns its keep. I use mine for everything from soups and stews to braises and one-pot dinners. You can brown your ingredients directly in the pot, add everything else, and let it simmer away without having to dirty another pan. It's also the sort of cookware that makes sense for colder months. A Dutch oven is practically an invitation to make something slow and comforting – a bubbling stew, a roast, or a casserole that can go straight from the oven to the table.

'A Dutch oven is one of those pieces that can really earn its place in a kitchen because of how versatile it is,’ says Chiana Dickson, Kitchen Appliances Editor at Homes & Gardens. ‘Cast iron is particularly useful for recipes that benefit from steady, retained heat, and having a good Dutch oven doesn't mean you need lots of other specialist cookware.’

If you've been tempted by a Le Creuset and the price has stopped you, the Crofton makes a compelling case for starting with something considerably more affordable. It's also a great non-toxic cookware option, too.

Le Creuset-Inspired Colors for Less

The other thing that stood out to me about ALDI's latest offering is the color palette. The green is the obvious choice for me – I already know how good a green Dutch oven can look sitting on a kitchen counter – but I also like the cream. Both have that slightly old-fashioned, heritage feel that makes cast-iron cookware so appealing in the first place.

This is where the Crofton Dutch oven feels more expensive than its $29.99 price tag. It doesn't look like a brightly colored piece of cookware designed to grab attention for a season. The green and cream are relatively restrained, so they should work just as well in a traditional kitchen as they would in a more modern space.

That's something Le Creuset has always understood particularly well. Its Dutch ovens aren't just functional; the colors are part of their appeal. They're pieces you leave out because they look good.

ALDI seems to be taking a similar approach here, just at a much more accessible price.

Shop Dutch Ovens

That collection finally caught up with me the other day, when a cabinet shelf gave way under the weight of my best non-toxic cookware. Apparently, even sturdy stacks of cast iron can be too much for a few flimsy shelf pins.

I was in desperate need of a better solution, and luckily, I found one at Amazon: An adjustable, heavy-duty pan stand that slots neatly into a cabinet to offer reinforced support. It’s sturdy enough to hold even my heaviest Dutch ovens and bakeware, giving me considerably more peace of mind.

From my prized Le Creuset Modern Heritage Dutch Oven to my Hexclad Saute Pan, I own a lot of heavy-duty, high-quality cookware. They outperform more affordable options by a landslide, with their heritage craftsmanship to thank for delivering easy, delicious results night after night.

However, that craftsmanship means these pans are far from lightweight. Whether they are solid cast iron or tri-ply stainless steel, they are heavy enough on their own, let alone stacked together on a shelf. Really, I should have seen the collapse coming – the pins supporting my pan storage were holding on by a hope and a prayer.

When they nearly all came crashing down, I knew something would have to change. The answer is getting rid of the shelf entirely and replacing it with a standing cookware organizer from Amazon instead. The adjustable rack is designed to hold heavy cookware, with each shelf supporting up to 10.6 lbs. They are movable, too, to accommodate any pan and its lid without stacking, preventing scratches, chips, and damage in kitchen storage.

Because the stand holds one pan per shelf, it will also make organizing pots and pans a breeze. I will no longer have to take things out of the cabinet to reach a pot in the very back corner, for example.

When it comes to organizing and decluttering kitchen cabinets, this is one of the best investments you can make. It helps protect your heirloom cookware for years to come while making everyday cooking a little more streamlined. What’s not to love?

They, along with the stand, are also durable and UV-resistant, so are built to withstand heavy use, both indoors and outside, throughout all four seasons.

This only gets worse in the fall and winter, but cleaning daily can be overkill. In between more thorough cleans, there is one affordable home hero that cleaning experts suggest spraying around your front door and entryway: vinegar.

Ahead, cleaning experts explain why a quick spritz of this household staple is one of the things people with clean entryways always do.

As Karina Toner, Cleaning Expert and Operations Manager at Spekless, explains, 'Shoes track in dirt, people touch the front door and handles constantly, and outdoor odors, dust, and moisture all tend to collect right around the entrance. A diluted vinegar spray can be a useful little trick for keeping that area fresh between more thorough cleanings.'

Of course, vinegar is by no means a replacement for a full-on disinfectant, but cleaning with vinegar is a tried-and-true, all-natural and non-toxic alternative. 'Its acidity can help break down grime and cut through lingering odors rather than simply covering them up with fragrance,' she adds.

Spraying vinegar on the front door is also an effective hack to remove ants and other pests. 'Ants are repelled by it,' explains Ashley Torres, Cleaning Expert and Team Leader at Karen's Green Maids. 'Ants travel long distances based on chemical trails. When you use vinegar to wipe down the entranceway, you’re removing the chemical trail they’ve been using to find their next food source.'

'Since you’re removing their ability to track their next meal, they’ll go searching elsewhere. Spraying vinegar on your doors and entryways keeps them constantly searching for their next food source; however, it doesn’t eliminate them. Therefore, you will need to repeat this process weekly or biweekly.'

Keep in mind, also, that this natural pest control method is a deterrent, not a cure. If you're dealing with a significant pest problem, as with any, it's best to call pest control instead.

How to Apply Vinegar to Your Front Door and Home Entrance

To freshen your entryway, Karina advises mixing white vinegar, available at Walmart for under $3, with water, and adjusting the vinegar-to-water ratio depending on the cleaning task at hand.

'For a reliable everyday spray, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a reusable spray bottle,' she says, adding, 'I prefer a reusable glass bottle because vinegar is acidic and glass holds up well over repeated use.' For this, we recommend the Vivaplex Amber Glass Spray Bottles, also available at Walmart. 'For lighter cleaning or for sensitive surfaces where you might be concerned about a lingering vinegar smell, you can dilute it further and go with one part vinegar to two parts water.

'Give the bottle a quick shake before spraying, then mist the solution onto a microfiber cloth rather than soaking the front door itself. Wipe the door, handle, and nearby hard surfaces, then allow them to dry.

'Misting onto the microfiber cloth instead of directly on the door gives you much better control and prevents liquid from running into seams, hardware, or areas where you don’t want moisture sitting.'

That being said, so long as you're careful, you can also spray this solution (from a distance) directly onto your doorsteps, doorframe, and around the entryway.

'I’d also give the door frame, nearby baseboards, light switches, and the wall area around the entrance a quick wipe, since these spots collect plenty of fingerprints, dust, and grime from people coming and going,' adds Karina. 'If you have a console table, bench, or other hard surfaces in the entryway, those can get the same treatment as long as the surface or material is vinegar-safe.

'Then there’s the part of the entryway that takes the biggest beating: the floor. You can use a more diluted vinegar solution on some hard flooring, but the material matters here, so always check the manufacturer’s recommendations first. I’d also wipe down shoe trays and the area underneath them regularly, since they’re often catching water, salt, mud, and whatever else gets tracked inside.'

There's just one important caveat to cleaning your entryway with vinegar − don't just reach for it blindly to apply on every surface, and always test it on small, inconspicuous spots first.

'Do not apply vinegar to marble or unsealed wood flooring as it will cause discoloration that cannot be reversed,' warns Ashley. 'Test a small section of paint near the bottom of your door to see if it affects the finish before applying vinegar to the entire door. Lastly, do not mix vinegar with bleach as it creates toxic fumes that are difficult to ventilate effectively in small spaces such as entryways.'

A clever combination of French press, pour-over, and espresso-style, it combines three brewing methods into one for a cup of well-rounded coffee in under two minutes.

It is easily one of the best non-toxic coffee makers I have reviewed so far, with zero guesswork required. The only caveat? The AeroPress Steel is expensive compared to other AeroPress models that brew very similar coffee. Here is how I got on during my tests.

Design and First Impressions

The AeroPress Steel uses the same iconic design as every other AeroPress model, with a main brewing chamber, silicone-edged plunger, and screw-on filter cap. It is available in a plain stainless steel and a matte black finish, which is the version I tested. I loved this look, as it prevents the usual smudges and smears that are synonymous with plain steel.

As the name suggests, this iteration is made from professional-grade stainless steel, with a double-wall vacuum-insulated chamber that I am pleased to say does not get hot at all while your coffee is brewing. The other difference with the steel model is the size. It is around 20% larger than a standard AeroPress, with a large 12 oz capacity for larger brews on the go and at home.

The packaging was simple and easy to open, and almost entirely recyclable with the exception of the plastic covering on the filters to keep them clean and dry.

With a quick rinse under plain warm water, it was ready to go.

Brewing Performance and Set Up

Our expert barista, Laura Honey, previously reviewed the original AeroPress Coffee Maker, and the two are not all that different in their brew styles, if at all.

It uses a truly unique brewing method, and while I am usually overwhelmed with the learning curve on new appliances, I am thrilled to say the AeroPress Steel was simple to get to grips with. Once you have done it once, it is difficult to get wrong.

The bottom filter cap unscrews easily, so easily it made me wonder if I had put it on properly, and a single paper filter is laid inside before being screwed back on. Once positioned over the top of the mug, you can add the beans.

After grinding fresh beans to medium-fine, these were tipped in (I used two scoops with the included scoop, as suggested in the instructions), and the AeroPress was shaken slightly to level everything out. From there, it was as simple as pouring in the boiling water to the top fill line (I loved the included markings for easy brewing). The included stainless steel stir stick was a nice touch that made reaching the bottom of the chamber simple.

The instructions do warn that you might hear some dripping right away, and I did. This is quickly fixed by adding the plunger, pressing it down half an inch or so, and pulling it back up to form a nice seal. This method does make it more difficult to get a good coffee bloom.

The AeroPress then sits for at least 30 seconds to brew. This is exceptionally quick, and the whole process felt no more complicated than brewing an instant coffee despite the extra step of grinding. If you have pre-ground coffee, it is just as simple.

Once brewed, I pressed down the plunger. How easy this is to do depends on your grind size. The finer the grind, the more difficult it is to plunge, as I discovered when I accidentally used a more espresso-like grind. This compacted against the filter into a tight barrier, and while it brewed a sweeter coffee, it was more hassle than it was worth, and I feared for the strain the mug beneath went through.

When you have the right grind size, plunging is a lot easier. You want to keep a nice, steady pace for this, pushing until you hear a distinctive 'hissing' noise, signifying your brew is complete.

The resulting coffee was remarkably delicious. My coffee-snob partner went into the experience already skeptical, under the impression nothing could be as good as a machine-brewed nine-bar espresso. However, after his first sip of the Americano, his brows rose, and it earned a coveted 'nod' of satisfaction. From him, that is very high praise.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning coffee makers is usually the bane of my existence, but the Steel AeroPress made this step remarkably easy, too. Once cooled, the filter cap unscrews easily, and the stir stick can be used to dislodge the paper filter if it is stuck on. These are compostable, so be sure to put them in your compost heap if you have one.

Removing the coffee puck is also easy. The plunger is designed to extend beyond the chamber. All I needed to do was hold the AeroPress over my food bin and press against the top, and it slid out with a satisfying 'pop.' From there, it is as simple as rinsing with warm water. That's it.

Storing the Steel AeroPress is also easy, even in my small kitchen, thanks to its compact size. The plunger slots back into the chamber, the cap screws on, and the stir stick and scoop slot into the empty plunger cavity. This stood neatly on my counter without getting in the way, but could just as easily have been tucked into a drawer or cabinet. There is also a dedicated Steel AeroPress Stand, available at Amazon, if you would like to make a more permanent display.

It is also perfectly sized to take on the go, should you want freshly brewed coffee at the office or on trips. It is worth noting, however, that while the steel certainly feels more durable than the original AeroPress, it is around 14 ounces heavier, which is something to consider if you are packing a lightweight trekking bag, for example.

However, many mention that they do not think that the price is worth the cost after upgrading from the original AeroPress. While they appreciate the solid build and the extra capacity, the extra weight and similar brew results come as a hard sell for the over-$100 price point.

The fact that it is plastic-free does win over several, however, which might make the upgrade worth it for many looking to make a kitchen less toxic.

Should You Buy The Steel AeroPress Coffee Maker?

I would absolutely recommend the Steel AeroPress if you are looking for a durable, quality, non-toxic brewer that you can take on the go. The finishing is immaculate, with professional-grade stainless steel that looks as good as it performs, especially in the matte black colorway. The coffee is delicious and full-bodied, and the process is remarkably easy.

That said, if you already have an AeroPress, I would not rush to upgrade. The Steel AeroPress is undeniably more expensive at $169.95 at the time of writing, and brews very similar coffee. The Steel model is two ounces larger and uses a double-wall stainless steel cavity rather than BPA-free plastic, which lends to the premium price point and larger size and weight.

It is certainly a premium pick for those serious about coffee, but if you are regularly on the go, need to pack light, or are working with a tighter budget, the original AeroPress is just as good an option.

As with all the best cast-iron cookware, the Made In pieces come with the familiar cast-iron learning curve and high maintenance regimen. But they make up for it in their performance, with relatively low-stick surfaces and great heat conductivity, providing crisp and golden results over a range of dishes.

This is how I found cooking with the Made In Seasoned Cast Iron, the minor complaints that docked half a star, and why I think it is ultimately a fantastic choice for those looking to get into cast iron cooking.

Design and First Impressions

As with other Made In products I have received in the past, the Seasoned Cast-Iron cookware came packaged with no plastic, nestled in sturdy cardboard packaging that was easy to break down and recycle.

Both the skillet and the Dutch oven arrive pre-seasoned with a flaxseed oil blend, meaning after a wipe-out to remove any factory dust, they are ready for use. As always, it is recommended to start cooking with higher-fat foods so the oils can contribute to the initial seasoning, avoiding acidic dishes that could damage the metal.

I was enamored by the overall aesthetic of these pieces, especially the Dutch oven. I am used to bright enameled cast iron for these pieces, so the rustic, cast-iron exterior with stamped lid was a nice change. It has the look and feel of a vintage piece but with modern durability and peace of mind. One thing I will note, however, is that it is incredibly heavy. The eight-inch skillet is easy to move around; however, the Dutch oven (especially with the lid) is by far the heaviest piece of cookware I have tested.

For reference, the oven with lid weighs in at around 15 pounds. This is five pounds heavier than the Le Creuset Modern Heritage Dutch oven I reviewed, and two pounds heavier than the Made In Enameled Cast-Iron Dutch oven I reviewed earlier this year. I was recovering from a back injury during testing, and I could certainly feel this added weight every time I stooped to take it in and out of the oven. This is not to mention the way the oven racks bowed under the pressure. It is certainly something to keep in mind before buying.

Cooking Performance

The Made In Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet

When testing a cast-iron skillet, I use the same tests to help establish how well they perform in comparison to one another.

Overall, the Made In Seasoned Cast-Iron Skillet performed well. It was not as low-stick as some of the other skillets I have tried, but it was far from the worst. Foods cooked and browned evenly, the pan heated throughout, and when food did stick it was usually down to needing more oil. I was generally pleased with the results, cooking with minimal frustrations.

• Burgers: The first thing I cooked in the pan was a burger, using the oils and fats to help break in the seasoning. The patty browned evenly, developing a decent crust; however, it was not quite as crisp as the Victoria Cast-Iron Skillet I was using alongside it, and the fats did burn a little to the base even when cooking on a low heat. I also found that the buttered bun stuck and tore on the surface afterwards, too. Overall, however, the results were commendable, and it made a nice burger quickly with minimal fuss.
• Sausage Hash: This is a go-to quick protein lunch for me, frying up pork sausages with onion (often tomatoes in a non-cast-iron pan), and starchy potatoes. This was another test the skillet passed with ease, with everything browning and crisping nicely. There was some sticky residue on the pan after cooking, however, which proved slightly annoying to remove, but it was far from an excruciating experience.
• Pancakes: I had mixed results with the pancakes, but I believe this may have come down to user error. The first pancake, cooked with plenty of oil, released perfectly, browning nicely across the surface. The second pancake, however, stuck rather badly and I had to scrape it out. I had tilted the pan between pancakes to redistribute the oil as I usually do, but it seems this was not enough. The more oil, the better, it seems.
• Skillet Cookie: A skillet cookie is the perfect test of how a pan performs in the oven. I preheated the skillet before greasing and adding the dough, then baked. The cookie slid out of the pan surprisingly easily after cooking a little, leaving only a few crumbs behind. It had a crisp base and molten center, which is everything I am looking for.
• Fried Eggs: A fried egg is a true litmus test for a cast iron pan. This was one of the last things I tested, after the pan had been used and oiled several times. At this point, the egg cooked quickly and evenly, released with a good amount of oil and my silicone spatula, and developed a crisp skirt. Again, it is not the crispiest I have seen, but good nonetheless.

The Made In Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Being so used to cooking in an enameled cast-iron Dutch oven, I was not sure what to expect from a plain cast-iron option. Having only tested one like it before (the IKEA Dutch oven I compared to Le Creuset), I dove in with my usual tests, with the exception of my bolognese, avoiding acidic ingredients to protect the metal:

• Bread: There is nothing better than a quick, home-baked loaf. When baking, I am looking for a quick bake with a good rise and a crispy exterior, and the Made In Dutch oven delivered. After preheating and laying the dough inside, I cooked with the lid on before removing it for the last half to crisp the top. The resulting bread was fluffy on the inside and golden on the exterior.
• Chicken Casserole: I was worried that the skin on my chicken thighs would stick to the rough interior of this Dutch oven, but I am thrilled to say I had no issues with sticking at all during my tests. The chicken crisped and released easily, the vegetables softened without complaint, and the stock bubbled evenly from edge to edge. My only complaint during the cooking process was how heavy the full pot was with the lid. I was worried that my oven rack would snap when I loaded it in, and was relieved halfway through when I removed the lid to crisp the dumpling tops. Overall, the chicken fell easily off the bone, the dumplings were light and fluffy, and the vegetables were tender and buttery. It was everything I would expect.

Cleaning, Storage and Maintenance

Cleaning cast iron has never been a task I enjoy, luckily, with the right tools, maintaining the Made In Seasoned Cast Iron was not too difficult. With both pans, residue was most easily removed with a chain mail scrubber, available at Amazon. This is especially true for the Dutch oven, which has a rough surface that would damage or catch fibers from a sponge or cloth.

You have to dry cast iron immediately, which was easy enough for the smooth-milled skillet but proved tricky with the Dutch oven. The weight and size aside, the rough surface tugged the fibers of my dish towel, leaving particles behind. I couldn't find a way around this, either, which was frustrating.

Beyond cleaning, you need to season these as you would any other cast-iron cookware. I chose to use grapeseed oil from Walmart for this, spreading it thinly over the surface before heating on my stove for a few minutes. Generally, I had no issue with this, but once again I found that paper towel chunks caught on the rough Dutch oven interior.

Storing the skillet was easy, as it slotted into my usual pan organizer; however, I would advise storing the Dutch oven on a low, sturdy shelf, as the weight could damage higher shelving or pose a risk when lifted in and out.

My Verdict: Should You Buy The Made In Cast-Iron Cookware?

The Made In Seasoned Cast Iron is, all in all, a good option if you want quality, heritage-quality cookware. It did not blow me away in the same way the super affordable Victoria skillet did, nor is it as easy to use as the Made In enameled options, but it delivers good results with minimal fuss.

I can't fault them too harshly, but there are other pans I would personally choose based on price and/or weight that offer the same performance. They look beautiful, however, making them a worthy choice if the overall aesthetic of your kitchen, and making kitchenware into decor, is a concern for you.

The general consensus among shoppers agrees with me. With an average of 4.9 stars over 54 reviews on the Made In site, customers love that it is pre-seasoned, the beautiful design, and the non-stick qualities that improve with time (especially on the smooth skillet).

When it comes to cast iron, you need to pay particular attention to cleaning and caring for cookware.
