Three floors up, less than 500 square feet, and riddled with tight corners – from the day I signed the lease, I knew my pre-war New York apartment would be difficult to furnish. I managed to fit a queen-sized bedframe, and a slim armoire gave the space some semblance of a normal apartment. But as for a sofa – there was simply no way a standard pick would work. I needed something modular.

Since this would be my first time owning a sofa (all of my previous apartments came pre-furnished), I had research to do. Of course, I didn't want something so cheap that I'd have to throw it away in a year. Instead, I wanted the best sofa I could get. But with a slew of parameters for my open-plan living room, my search proved to be more challenging than I thought. After a few weeks of feeling like I'd never find the right sofa, I came across modular sofa experts, Cozey.

After narrowing down my options, I landed on the Gaia XL in Flax Haven – a two-seater modular sofa in a soft tan color. I took a leap of faith and ordered it online. Just under a week later, it arrived.

I vividly remember sitting on the floor of my hardly furnished studio, staring at the five boxes that supposedly contained my new sofa. Was this the right decision, or was ordering a sofa online a huge mistake? Spoiler alert: it was, without a doubt, the right call. Setting It Up

A few things surprised me about my Gaia sofa's delivery. First: the speed. The sofa arrived at my apartment less than a week after I'd ordered it – faster than some of my online clothing purchases. Not only that, but I couldn't believe how compact it was. Only five boxes held everything, along with a sixth that held the adjustable side table I had also ordered.

Though I recruited help for set up (shoutout to my generous mother and sister), I could've easily assembled the Gaia sofa on my own. Set up is very straightforward, with instructions available online and inside the box.

Since I ordered the two-seater sofa with an ottoman, I received three square-shaped base pieces (two for the seats, one for the ottoman), two flat back pieces, two armrests, and several cushions and covers. I was very surprised at how easy it was to assemble the sofa structure – just a few simple steps and assembly was nearly done.

Oddly enough, the hardest part of the setup wasn't putting any of the structural pieces together. In fact, it was stuffing the cushions into their fabric covers. Because the cushions themselves are so big and the fabric covers are designed with zipper openings that are slightly too small, squeezing the cushion into the cover was a two-person job – one that caused both my mother and I to break a sweat and laugh at how ridiculous we probably looked trying to do this.

The only other challenge that my mother, sister, and I encountered while assembling the Gaia sofa was connecting the base seats. Two plastic connectors are supposed to hook onto the hidden feet of the sofa, connecting the left seat with the right seat in the middle. It seems simple in theory, but this was rather challenging for us – we'd hook the back connector, then the front one would pop off, and vice versa. I blamed this on the fact that the floor of my pre-war apartment is egregiously uneven – causing the feet to not line up properly – and decided to not use the connectors. Thankfully, the sofa didn't slide apart without these connecting pieces.

Much to my surprise, the entire process – unboxing, assembling, cushion-covering, and pushing into place – took just under an hour. And though I had help, I definitely could've done this alone.

Living With the Gaia Sofa

I've lived with the Gaia sofa for a few months now. It has quickly become a fixture in my studio apartment – a spot where I work, read, and watch TV. I've even had a friend sleep on it while staying overnight at my place (they glowingly said it was more comfortable than their mattress at home).

We spoke to hosting experts who shared their practical and creative approaches to staying cool and adding shade while spending time outside this season. Below, find their tips so you can enjoy hosting outdoors – no matter the temperature.

1. Create Spots of Shade

It's always a good idea to have some shaded areas in your backyard. Even if you love soaking up the sun, some guests might prefer to relax in the shade. And on hot days, a shady zone can make your patio feel so much cooler.

Hosting expert Julianna McIntosh says that shaded areas are a must. 'I recommend using large umbrellas or pop-up tents to provide ample cover. Setting up comfortable seating areas under the shade with cozy cushions and fans can help guests stay cool and relaxed,’ she explains.

Things like outdoor umbrellas, small gazebos, and even tall plants can create shade in your outdoor space. And the more shading elements you have, the more outdoor space you'll be able to enjoy on a hot summer day.

2. Encourage a Flow Between Indoors and Out

If a shady space is not enough, you could combine indoor and outdoor hosting by starting the party inside and then transitioning outdoors once it's cool enough, author and entertainment expert Dawna Pitts recommends.

‘I live in very sunny Paradise Valley, Arizona, so oftentimes I hold the 'mingling hour' (the beginning forty-five minutes to an hour) inside, and then, after the sun has set enough, I love taking the party outside for comfortable dining without the sun beating down,’ she shares.

Keep exterior doors open so guests can quickly move from outside back in, and vice versa. Just make sure to use a screen door or a magnetic screen to keep unwanted pests from finding their way inside.

3. Plan a Summer Menu With Intention

A summer party calls for a seasonally appropriate menu and what you serve can make all the difference to keep guests cool. Rather than serving heavy, hot dishes and strong drinks, opt for light meals, seasonal accoutrements, and cold, refreshing cocktails.

According to luxury event planner Cassie LaMere, there are so many creative drinks to serve when hosting outdoors in the summertime. 'Serve beverages in mint julep cups with shaved ice that hold onto their cooling effect even in peak heat, or have glassware in a freezer so it presents frosted,' she suggests. It helps to set up an outdoor drink station, too, or at least a few chic ice buckets – this way, you don't have to run back inside to make another round.

As for the food, you can never go wrong with fish as the main course (grilled halibut is always a winner for an elevated but easy dish). That said, there are so many other summer foods that are worth serving at your party – like sliced fruit, melon and prosciutto platters, or cold pasta salads.

4. Incorporate Cooling Devices

Sometimes, shade is simply not enough to keep you cool while outside – especially when the summer heat surpasses 90 degrees. That's why it's a good idea to incorporate cooling units or devices into your backyard's design scheme.

If you have a covered porch, consider installing an outdoor ceiling fan to circulate air, and if you don't have a covered space, opt for a standing fan instead. If you live in a very hot climate, consider installing misters – or wire-like devices that can spray water around your patio to keep you and your guests extra cool and comfortable.

5. Use a Light Color Scheme

Light colors just make sense for outdoor summer hosting. These shades absorb less heat than darker colors do, and they can even trick your brain into feeling cooler, too.

According to our editor Jennifer Ebert, 'a lighter color scheme can completely transform how an outdoor space feels during the summer months.' She recommends utilizing a soft summer color palette of whites, warm neutrals, and pale natural tones to make patio seating areas feel fresh and more comfortable for summer hosting. 'Beyond the practical benefits, these airy hues also create a relaxed, timeless backdrop that enhances the feeling of being outdoors,' Jennifer continues.

Decor aside, you can even recommend that guests dress in light colors to help them feel even cooler as they enjoy time outside at your house.

6. Appeal to All of the Senses

Another way you can make your outdoor space feel cooler in the summer is by tapping into all of the senses. According to hosting expert Cassie LaMere, this is a key element in hosting a successful gathering. Since we've covered sight, taste, and touch, that leaves scent and sound.

'Saltwater or eucalyptus scents are refreshing and soothing,’ Cassie suggests in terms of scent. And while you can definitely buy a candle to emit a refreshing summer scent, consider planting fragrant summer flowers that will immerse your garden in cooling, fresh fragrances.

In terms of sound, Cassie suggests playing peaceful music to set the mood. 'Keep the playlist soothing with ocean waves or yacht rock; both will transport you to on-the-water instant chill vibes,' she says.

I love outdoor hosting in the summertime, but what I don't love is all the back and forth that comes with it – running inside to grab a missing component (more napkins, an extra glass, cutlery, the list goes on), hurrying back out, and not even five minutes later, having to do the same thing again for something else.

In the space above, designer Kaitlin Smith chose the vintage blue-and-white patio set for the contrast it provided to the shingled home in the background, but she selected the rest of the furniture for its flexibility. 'The rattan benches with cushions are the perfect alternative to a coffee table, providing a nice spot for a tray or a comfortable place to put your feet up,' she says. 'The layout is conducive to outdoor entertaining, as the ottoman can also pull apart for additional seating if needed.'

'Creating different zones in your outdoor space is like creating distinct rooms outside, without the walls,' says designer Michelle Morgan Harrison of Morgan Harrison Home. 'Rather than putting all of your furniture in one place, separating it creates a flow throughout the space and makes the entire outdoor area feel bigger.'

The way furniture is arranged can be enough to differentiate between zones. Angling a seating group inward around a fire pit or coffee table signals a gathering space, while a pair of lounge chairs facing a view creates a natural spot to unwind, for example.

5. Anchor Living Spaces with Flooring Choices

If your outdoor seating area needs more definition, or you want clearer separation between zones, considered flooring can be the simplest fix.

An outdoor rug is one of the most effective ways to both anchor and define a seating zone, and one that works visually and tactilely. 'A change in texture underfoot signals a different function,' explains Tracy Parkinson of Nest + Co, who furnished the space above. 'This can also be achieved using different decking materials such as wood and stone, or by laying the same material in a different pattern.'

'The difference [between indoor and outdoor furniture] is that outdoor furniture needs to withstand the elements,' says Sacha Jacq, who designed the open roofdeck, above. 'Wind, rain, snow, and prolonged sun exposure all play a role in the selection process.

That constant exposure means material choice should be as much about performance as it is about preference.

'Materiality is critical, from the durability of outdoor fabrics to the performance of hard surfaces and frame finishes. The best outdoor furnishings strike a balance between comfort, aesthetics, and longevity,' Sacha says.

7. Get the Spacing Right Around a Fire Pit

Turns out, there's a magic number when it comes to arranging chairs around a fire pit. Too few and the gathering feels sparse; too many and people end up shouting across the flames. 'Designing outdoor spaces in New England means we absolutely have to consider seasonal flexibility. We want to create outdoor spaces that give our clients the most use – from day to night, summer to fall,' says Michelle Morgan Harrison.

Shade is the starting point. A slatted pergola or similar structure makes a space usable through the hottest part of the day, while still allowing some light through. From there, heaters, like this ceiling-mounted electric version, like this option from Wayfair, and a fireplace extend the use further. 'We added heaters and a fireplace that can come into play on breezy summer nights, or even during the cooler seasons, allowing for this outdoor space to get use after the sun's gone down and the warm air has faded,' she explains.

9. Consider the View from the House

There's a good chance you'll be able to see your outdoor furniture from inside, so use your furniture as a chance to enhance the view. Chair and sofa backs are often seen from the kitchen window or the living room, so it's worth choosing pieces with a detail that holds up from that angle too.

'This teak seating area provides the perfect backdrop for entertaining in the lush backyard,' says Kaitlin Smith. 'Because the backs of the chairs and sofa can be viewed from the house and yard, I wanted to be sure they had an interesting decorative element to them, and the cross detail seemed to mimic the architectural elements of the house.'

'The generous corner sofa encourages gathering and conversation, while the surrounding lavender and climbing plants soften the hardscape, introducing color and fragrance throughout the season. A large parasol provides welcome shade and extends the usability of the space, making it a comfortable retreat on hotter summer days.'

11. Give Special Consideration to Coastal Settings

Material choice is always important outdoors, but coastal gardens leave even less room for error given elements like gusting winds and salt air.

'In this particular project, we were careful to use materials that will weather well in harsh coastal conditions,' explains Sarah Henley of Henley Design. Teak and metals like powder-coated stainless steel that will not corrode in salt air were utilized in this project, as well as sturdy, color-fast outdoor performance fabrics. After durability, then we consider comfort and aesthetics.'

12. Take Color Cues from the Surroundings

Choosing a color palette for outdoor furniture is easiest when you let the surrounding landscape do the work. Rather than starting from an outdoor trend or a mood board, look at what's already there – the color of the water, the siding on the house, the vegetation along the property line – and build the palette outward from those tones. The result tends to feel more cohesive than a scheme chosen in isolation, since the furniture reads as part of the setting.

'A palette of soft greens, coastal-inspired neutrals, and layered blues echoes the natural beauty of the landscape, drawing inspiration from the nearby water, sky, and kelp vegetation,' says designer Samantha Pappas of the outdoor area above. 'The effect is a space that feels like it grew out of its surroundings rather than one that was simply placed there.'

13. Consider the Impact of Sightlines

If your seating area is one part of a larger, zoned outdoor space, it's worth considering how the sightlines created by your furniture affect not just the flow of the space, but the flow of conversation. Turning a sofa or chair back toward an adjacent outdoor dining area can quietly cut off one group from another, even when there's no physical divider between them.

'We always like to avoid having the back of a sofa or chair to the dining space whenever possible, because it's less conversational and inviting,' explains Sarah Henley. 'We always think about the flow between drinks and apps before and after dinner in conjunction with the dining area, and having a connection between the two areas is important.'

14. For an Intimate Space, Lean on Chairs over Sofas

Chairs tend to win out over sofas when the goal is conversation – which was exactly the brief for the space above, designed by Annsley McAleer of Annsley Interiors and Lily Flatley. The covered porch serves as a seasonal gateway between the home and the pool beyond, meant to draw people in and keep them there.

Chairs are easier to reposition on the fly, which makes a space more adaptable for different group sizes, and they allow people to angle themselves toward each other. A sofa-heavy setup can look polished, but it often comes at the expense of flexibility and warmth. 'Chairs are easier to move around and naturally encourage conversation because people can angle themselves toward one another,' adds Sarah Cole.. 'Too many sofas can make an outdoor space feel rigid.'

15. Immerse Your Seating in the Landscape

Nature is the whole point of spending time outside, so don't underestimate the impact surrounding greenery can have on your outdoor seating area. It's not an afterthought –it's part of the design.

The space above, for example, was designed to feel submerged in the surrounding garden. 'This seating area was conceived as a quiet garden sanctuary, where comfortable furnishings are nestled amongst richly layered planting,' says Nick Woodhouse. 'The surrounding borders create a sense of enclosure and immersion, making the space feel calm and deeply connected to nature.'

16. Or, Add in Plenty of Greenery

If you can't site your seating area directly in a garden bed, try arranging large potted plants arranged around the perimeter, or planting a climbing vine along a trellis or pergola post. Even a single well-placed planter near a seating cluster can go a long way toward softening hard surfaces and connecting the space to the environment.

All good things come to an end, and it seems the reign of sage green is finally winding down. After years of decorating with sage, pistachio, and mint, designers are embracing a warmer, more uplifting palette – one that swaps familiar muted greens for rich, sun-soaked yellows.

While several shades are vying to replace sage green, one color has emerged as the clear favorite. Soft ochres, golden creams, and warmer takes on butter yellow are bringing depth, optimism, and understated sophistication to interiors, making yellow the designer-approved shade of the season.

'The client wanted to color-drench this hallway in a sunny, happy color,' says Kay. 'It has multiple windows, so we leaned into the brightness of the space.'

'I would advise pairing it with a soft white like Wimborne White from Farrow & Ball or a more earthy colour like Chocolate Colour from Little Greene. You can then use warm metals such as bronze or antique brass to complement the warm tones.'

'This bathroom is a children's bathroom,' begins interior designer Phoebe Hollond, founder of Studio Hollond, 'and having opted for a Saul Steinberg-inspired mural on the walls with the wonderful fine lines and illustrations, we wanted to really lift the artistic seriousness of the bathroom and make the space feel more youthful and sunny. This yellow does exactly that; it's a little bit of sunshine and joy, a pop of fun.'

'Yellow is an easy color to be brave with because it is a happy color,' says Phoebe. 'I find that if you introduce it in pops, on architraves or skirtings, it really gives a good impression without dominating.'

'The great thing about pale yellow is that it is such a flattering color, unlike green, which can make one's complexion quite 'sickly'. I would avoid green in bathrooms!'

It is an opportunity to make a personal statement about a painting you love or an accessory that speaks to you.'

Thrifted pieces can make a home look more expensive, as well as injecting some much-needed character too. 'So many decorated homes can be sterile and lack warmth,' adds Lisa. 'As designers, we like to make a client’s home feel comfortable and personal. Vintage, antique or just quirky objects can serve this purpose. In a kitchen, we recently used some antique gingerbread biscuit moulds from the Netherlands and vintage copper cake pans to display on a breakfast wall. These pieces added character to the space and simple cabinetry that was on the other walls.'

'Safe' neutrals may have had some bad press in recent months, but that's not to say that every shade is worth writing off. This year, rich, complex neutrals that feel layered and warm are a calming choice that balance the striking shades amongst this year's trends.

While some beige paints can fall into the flat or forgettable category, Benjamin Moore's Pashmina is the rich, warming hue that proves neutral doesn't have to mean boring. 'Perfectly balanced between warm and cool, light and dark, Pashmina is a sophisticated neutral that feels at home in any space,' says Helen Shaw, Director of Marketing (International) at Benjamin Moore. There are, of course, plenty of colors replacing beige in 2026, but there's no denying that sometimes all a scheme calls for is a grounding neutral for it to truly come to life.

'Pashmina is one of my favorite taupes because it sits right in the middle,' says interior designer Nikka Winchel, founder of Halcyon Haus Design. 'It isn’t too gray, and it doesn’t read overly beige. It has enough depth to feel intentional, but it’s still soft enough to use throughout an entire space. I also love that it changes with the light. It always feels warm, but it never falls flat.'

'I spent a long time looking for the right taupe for this project (pictured above). I wanted something with depth, but I didn’t want it drifting too far into gray or reading too beige. I also knew I didn’t want a color that was so light it disappeared or so dark that it felt heavy. Pashmina landed right in that sweet spot. It has enough complexity to feel interesting, but it’s still incredibly versatile.'

'The kitchen gets beautiful western light, which pulls out the warmer side of the color and gives the cabinetry a really soft glow later in the day,' adds Nikka. 'It shifts throughout the day, but it never loses the richness that made me fall in love with it in the first place. From the beginning, I wanted the cabinetry to do most of the talking, so every other finish was chosen to support it rather than compete with it. Once we landed on Pashmina, the rest of the palette came together naturally.'

While the beige gray color trend was big a few years ago, it still feels timeless and enduring when paired with more vibrant shades. 'Its stony grey character pairs beautifully with almost any color, making it a favourite for both contemporary and classic interiors,' says Helen. 'A delicate blush undertone adds warmth and depth, allowing it to complement rich oranges for a welcoming, energised atmosphere, or muted mid-tones for a softer, more serene and understated look.'

'I think Pashmina is at its best when it’s paired with natural materials,' advises Nikka. 'It’s beautiful with warm whites, light oak, handmade tile, natural stone, plaster, and metals that have some warmth to them. I also like mixing polished nickel with unlacquered brass because the contrast keeps the palette from feeling too expected, and this is a perfect pairing for this color.'

'Style-wise, it’s incredibly versatile,' adds Nikka. 'It works just as well in a traditional home as it does in something more contemporary because it doesn’t feel trendy. It’s simply a really well-balanced neutral that lets the materials around it shine.'

'A popular Benjamin Moore hue, this perfectly balanced neutral is well-loved for its adaptability and depth,' says Arianna Barone, Color Marketing Manager at Benjamin Moore. 'Pair this timeless midtone with a soft off-white, like Steam AF-15, on the trim and ceiling. Bring in texture with chunky knits in charcoals and chocolates – like Kendall Charcoal HC-166 and Black Bean Soup 2130-10 – for added warmth.'

'Pashmina is a rich, warm greige that feels soft and timeless,' states Melissa Oholendt, founder of Oho Interiors. 'It’s one of our favorite non-white trim colors. It adds subtle contrast and definition without feeling too stark. It pairs beautifully with soft whites and deep blues.'

Warmer days are upon us, so it's only natural to want to spend as much time as possible outside. While to some, the ideal summer day consists of doing very little, to me (and quirky homeware lovers like me), it's spending time in an old house (or garage) sifting through once-loved knick-knacks that need a new home.

Whether you enjoy decorating with vintage or you're keen to snoop around for a bargain, garage sales are filled with all kinds of unexpected treasures that are perfect for every type of shopper.

'I love, love, love, garage sales, especially in wonderful old historic homes, or in the more sophisticated parts of town,' says interior designer Jill Tran of Tran + Thomas Design Studio. 'The best way to navigate is to walk in with an open mind and wide open eyes! We always look for things that are unique, perhaps not available anymore, that have a wonderful nostalgia or can help tell a story for a client or even our own homes!'

Garage sales are filled with unexpected gems, so the question remains, how do you navigate them? What should you pick up, and what should you always avoid?

1. Buy It For Its Quality, Not Its Price

Like with most things, it's always important to make a purchase based on quality rather than price point. It's all well and good spotting a bargain, but if it's not something you actually want or need, you'll forget about it pretty quickly.

Whether you're heading to one of the vintage sales happening in July 2026 or there's a local garage sale you've spotted in your neighborhood, while it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of a haggle, always consider the quality of the piece you're buying.

'My biggest garage sale tip is to buy for quality, not simply because something is inexpensive,' says vintage expert Vanessa Chaverri-Gratz. 'The best bargain is the piece you’ll still love years from now, whether it’s a solid wood table, vintage artwork, holiday decor, or beautiful brass candlesticks.'

2. Make a Clear List

Whether you're starting an antiques collection or you're shopping for that one specific piece to fill out an empty nook, always make a list of what you need before you head to a garage sale to ensure you don't make the age-old mistake of leaving with pieces you didn't need and don't actually work in your home.

'Garage sales can hold amazing treasures if you know what to look for,' explains Jody Jones, founder of Blue Indigo Design. 'When hitting the neighborhood sale, our biggest tip is to be prepared. Make a list of the items you are looking for and determine the style, finish, or color pattern that will work best for the items that you already have.'

'We like to focus on vintage frames, textiles and ceramics,' Jody continues. 'Frames instantly add character to your space, textiles are great layering pieces, and decorative ceramics are amazing for finishing styling in your spaces. Don’t be afraid to find something that may need a little TLC; the layered and lived-in vibe is what can make a garage sale find some of the best pieces in your home.

3. Go In with An Open Mind

'When shopping at a garage sale try to look past the current styling and focus on the 'bones' of a piece. Fresh paint, new hardware, or a good cleaning can completely transform something that’s well made,' advises Vanessa.

You should always thrift furniture, artwork, or ceramics at garage sales, particularly if it works with your interior design style or the look you're trying to create. Jill says, 'We just completed a project, and we’re able to use a variety of antique and vintage pieces to fulfil the client's wish of a “Ralph Lauren” look and utilized garage sales for that, and it was so much fun!'

'The project turned out fabulously with lots of layering and very interesting things such as old horn magnifying glasses, a wonderful old fabric and leather suitcase, beautiful old books, and even a stunning wood and brass level. In addition, we had weathered tennis rackets and croquet mallets, vintage trophies, delightfully detailed silver pieces, and old cameras. What a joy!'

4. Collect, Don't Hoard

Slowly collecting is what the eclectic interior design trend is all about, so if you're looking to create a home that feels thoughtful and authentic, know when to buy – and when to put it down.

'Finally, I’d encourage people to collect slowly,' explains Vanessa. 'The goal isn’t to come home with the most items. It’s to come home with the right ones. The most timeless homes are built one meaningful piece at a time.'

Whether it's a Spode plate to add to your collection of vintage ceramics or a rare book to go on the shelves of your home library, the pieces you have thought about are the ones you'll be thankful that you bought in years to come.

5. Do Your Research

Only garage sale regulars will know that the best way to strike gold is to do your research beforehand. Consider the neighborhood the garage sale is being held in, the type of property being cleared out, and if you can, who the owner is.

Not only will this give you a firm idea of what sort of goods to expect, but it also means you can brush up on your research beforehand and gauge what sort of prices you'd be satisfied paying for certain goods.

A garage sale looks very different depending on your location, so it's always useful to be aware of antiques you should buy depending on where you live so you know the gems worth buying, particularly if you've made the trip there and you're not local to that area.

If you can't make it to a garage sale this summer, online vintage shopping is the best it's ever been and it's so easy now to find a gem. These are just a few of the pieces I am eyeing up right now.

July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of America's independence, so naturally, at Homes & Gardens, before we kick off the weekend celebrations, we wanted to look back at the last 250 years of U.S. design. Which styles and interior design trends have endured since the very beginning?

The evolution of the American home has, of course, changed dramatically over the past 250 years, but some styles have stood the test of time, adapting to modern lifestyles and preferences. Many of today's biggest design trends have roots in the past, and because the design world has spent much of 2026 looking back for inspiration, these classic styles have never felt more du jour.

These five defining looks designers agree best capture the past 250 years of United States history and how Americans have decorated – and continue to decorate – their homes.

1. Art Deco

Art Deco design may have first begun over a century ago, but, like all truly timeless looks, its endurance is a testament to its style and luxury.

'I think Art Deco remains one of the most timeless design styles from the past 250 years,' says Boston-based interior designer Nina Farmer. 'At its best, it balances bold geometry with exceptional craftsmanship, creating interiors that feel both glamorous and enduring. Its influence continues today, particularly when paired with the quiet elegance of Swedish Grace, together creating spaces that feel sophisticated, layered, and never overly tied to a single era.'

While France is where the movement first began, it didn't take long for it to move further afield, soon influencing some of America's leading art, design, and architecture (think the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building). In the interior design world, it's one of the few styles that still feels relevant, with designers relying on Art Deco decor for a chic, high-end feel. In today's homes, Art Deco is communicated through mirrored surfaces, sleek, angular lines, luxe fabrics like velvet or leather, and a moody color palette.

2. American Classic

So many of America's iconic houses have that deeply familiar, classic interior that designers still recreate when designing a timeless, enduringly chic home for their clients.

'My thoughts are that American design has quite a few timeless design styles from Shaker to mid-century, postmodern, etc,' states Massachusetts-based designer Liz Caan. 'My favorite and the one I believe is the most timeless is New Traditional or American Classic, which is about classical architecture, clean lines, layered antiques, custom upholstery, collected art, and a sophisticated level of restraint.'

A mixture of Federal and classical Greek influences, American Classic design pays homage to the grandeur of the past (think mahogany furniture, ornate architectural details, quality fabrics, and decadent lighting) in the contemporary American setting. 'It borrows from many periods but assembles them in a livable and comforting way,' adds Liz.

3. New England Coastal

Shiplap walls, coastal motifs, and a classic blue-and-white color palette are just a few things that make the New England coastal style what it is today. A style that's evolved over the past 250 years, it's an aesthetic that nods to its environment (in this case, the coast) while paying homage to its deep-rooted history.

The coastal shingle style came later (popping up in the 1800s with the arrival of seaside resorts), proof that nautical design has (and still is) always resonated with homeowners. It's still popular today, with plenty of homes across the United States striving for that familiar, laid-back feel that still feels classic and enduring.

4. Arts & Crafts

'Arts & Crafts has remained timeless because it valued quality over trends,' says Philadelphia-based designer Krystal Reinhard. 'It was about honoring handmade craftsmanship, natural materials, and historic integrity. The movement celebrated built-ins, handcrafted wallpapers, artisan tiles, and a deep connection to nature.'

Loved for its ability to combine the rustic and ornate, the Arts & Crafts revival trend is an appreciation for craftsmanship and all things artisanal. 'More than a century later, those principles are just as relevant as they were then,' adds Krystal, 'and those principles and core values are what I stand behind today. They set the foundation for my studio working on historic homes in Philadelphia.'

5. Shaker Style

The Shakers first came to America in the late 18th century, bringing with them a set of morals that emphasized quality, endurance, and handcrafts. Today's much-loved take on the Shaker aesthetic feels not dissimilar to the original style. The Shaker kitchen did (and still does) embrace earthy colors, rustic wooden furniture, and built-ins (today, this is best seen through simplistic kitchen cabinetry).

Unsurprisingly, the Shaker style remains iconic. With its emphasis on quality materials, endurance, and craftsmanship, it's a style that appeals to many of us looking to create a timeless home that stands proud despite years of use.

The Timeless Decor Edit

To Atlanta-based interior designer Nina Long, the most timeless American interiors are those that pull influence from everywhere and all periods. 'Rather than choosing one specific design style, I think the most timeless interiors are those that thoughtfully borrow from European traditions while reflecting the people who live there.'

'Whether inspired by an English country house, a Belgian farmhouse or a Parisian apartment, these spaces prioritize craftsmanship, antiques, layered textiles, and authenticity over trends. The common thread isn’t a particular look; it’s a commitment to quality, comfort and creating a home that feels collected over time.'

'To me, great American design isn’t about chasing what’s current. It’s about creating spaces with character that become even more beautiful as they age. The most enduring homes tell a story, feel deeply personal, and evolve naturally over the years. That’s what makes them truly timeless.'

Traditional library rooms often lean dark and studious, but Pandora Taylor approached this Mayfair space with a far lighter hand. Designed as a multifunctional room for reading, entertaining, work, and play, the long, narrow space demanded careful planning to avoid feeling overly formal or, worse, like a glamorous corridor.

Instead, Pandora created what she describes as a 'joyful, airy jewel box' – a layered scheme with 'wow factor', where soft curves, tonal color and playful hits of pattern keep the eye moving through the space.

A run of joinery weaves through the room, connecting each zone, while pink vintage-inspired chandeliers, a grass-green Nordic Knots rug and moiré wallcoverings introduce joy and movement. The result is a library that intends to 'impress and inspire', Pandora says.

The layout was the starting point. 'This helped us decide how to plan the color scheme throughout the room to ensure there is interest at every step of this long space,' she says. Due to its tricky proportions and connecting walkway between the townhouse and the mews house beyond, the space risked feeling more like a passageway than a library. Instead, the layout was carefully designed to prioritize openness and sight lines for a sense of flow and rhythm. A skirted sofa acts as the room’s anchor. 'The boxy lines help to create a natural divide in the middle of the room,' Pandora explains. Crucially, the low profile means you can still visualize the room as a whole.

Softness plays an equally important role in shaping the atmosphere. 'Because the room is narrow, it was essential to introduce some curved furniture,' says Pandora, who balanced the long, linear proportions with rounded forms. These softer, more organic lines give a 'natural flow' to the room, so everything still feels connected, she explains, preventing the run of joinery from feeling too imposing.

Color, too, is used cleverly rather than simply decoratively. The scheme all began with sky-blue wallpaper. 'It just felt so engaging. The bold wall color meant we could be more delicate with the curtains, which showcase a beautiful organic pattern in springlike colors.'

Against the wash of blue, pink chandeliers punctuate the room’s length, while tonal pinks and spring greens repeat across upholstery, lighting and textiles. 'If they sit in the same tonal family, there is a natural kindred there,' Pandora explains.

Rather than simply filling the elongated space with furniture for the sake of it, Pandora created a series of distinct yet connected moments: a desk zone for work, a central seating space for conversation, and a games table for more fun gatherings.

'We wanted our clients to be able to enjoy every inch of the space and for it to be a room that draws you in with purpose,' she explains. 'This is a space for working but also for play,' she adds. The continuous bookcase acts as a unifying thread throughout, while allowing each zone to retain its own distinctive identity.

Styling also plays a role in softening the room’s architecture. Books and objects are layered with trailing greenery, which Pandora explains helps to 'break the front line' of the shelves. The effect introduces organic movement at varying heights and prevents the shelves from feeling too uniform. 'We wanted to create something with wow factor – not necessarily your classic library space but a place that impresses and inspires,' says Pandora.

Carefully planned yet full of curiosity, the room strikes a balance between practicality and playfulness that makes it feel elegant and inviting. 'It’s like being inside a fabulous cocktail party in your favorite frock,' says Pandora of the social spirit of the space.

'Drawing on the natural environment and choosing tones which mimic the environs will add a welcoming atmosphere,' explains Helen Shaw, director of Marketing at Benjamin Moore. Green paint not only ages gracefully and brings a heritage feel to a home's exterior but it also feels harmonious with nature, making it a lasting choice for years to come. 'I absolutely love a green front door,' says interior designer Jennifer Hunter. 'In fact, I painted the front door of my Connecticut home in Farrow & Ball's Carriage Green, and it's one of my favorite design decisions we've made. There's something so timeless about a deep green, especially against a warm white exterior. It feels classic and beautifully echoes the landscape surrounding the home.'

'To me, a front door should feel warm and welcoming,' Jennifer adds, 'so I always finish the look with natural materials like rattan and terracotta planters filled with boxwoods in every season, then layer in flowering plants as the weather changes.'

Painting your front door green will upgrade curb appeal in a weekend and instantly make your entrance feel more sophisticated.

'Sherwin-Williams Dried Thyme is a personal favorite for instantly making a home's front look more expensive,' explains interior designer Mollie Ranize of Dmar Interiors. 'That's because it's a complex, grayed sage, not a flat green. That depth reads as expensive. It shifts with the light, pairs effortlessly with stone, warm wood, and brass, and signals a deliberate, design-forward choice rather than a safe default. It makes a facade feel rooted and quietly luxurious instead of trendy.'

Greens pair well with a variety of house styles, too, whether you live in a historic Tudor-style home or a Tuscan-style house like the property pictured above. 'Bricked frontage houses look particularly elegant with doors in deep rich colors which nod to the period that they were built and will complement the original brickwork,' adds Helen.

Outdoor Accessories Best With Green

While there are front door colors to avoid in 2026, green isn't one of them. Classically heritage yet fresh and on trend, it's one of those rare paint colors that will always boost curb appeal and make a front entrance feel more expensive.

While nothing aids a good night's rest like some organic sheets and a comfy mattress, bedding isn't the only component that comes to the rescue during the warmer months. In fact, your nightstand (and what you put on it) plays a big part in how your bedroom looks and feels come summertime.

While the exact way to style a nightstand is always going to be personal, there are things best removed from your bedside if you want to sleep through the night this summer. It's easy to treat your nightstand as an opportunity to display all your favorite things, but the subtle art of paring things back will keep your bedroom free of clutter and ultimately relaxing.

These are the three things to remove from your nightstand, and the one thing to add for a restful summer night that lasts the entire season.

Remove: Charging Stations

Whether your bedside stores all your practical necessities or it's more of a charming vignette, the best nightstand styling formulas leave out unsightly charging cables, plug sockets, and, most importantly, mobile phones.

Interiors therapist Suzanne Roynon explains, 'Aside from emitting an electromagnetic field which can interfere with sleep, and the temptation to check it if you wake in the night, the blue light can start the brain waking up much earlier than necessary. Also, the charger and the phone become warm during the charge. On warm summer nights, the last thing you need next to your head is a heated phone.'

'Since summer is a hot, fiery time of year, in Feng Shui we see this as the fire element,' says Feng Shui expert Anjie Cho. 'When it's so fiery, it's helpful to offer balance to cool and invite restfulness, especially when we're sleeping. I would recommend readers remove anything that's overly fiery: the color red and triangular shapes. Electronic devices are also considered the fire element, so if you can, place them away from the bed to support your rest.'

Remove: Books 'You'll Get To'

Books on a nightstand are just as important as a good table lamp or a carafe of water, but that doesn't mean you need to overdo it. Keep your current reading rotation by your bedside, and leave out any editions you've not yet got around to.

Suzanne says to 'remove that large pile of books you'll 'get to'. It’s great to read, but only keep the active one beside you; put the rest in another room. Not only will you be more focused, but you’ll remove the sense of pressure which comes with things waiting to be done, or in this case, read.'

The aim is to create a chaos-free, serene bedroom that aids a good night's rest, and stopping your nightstand from becoming a catchall will help you achieve this.

Remove: Excessive Decorations

A summer bedroom isn't complete without some chic bedside decor, but instead of filling out your nightstands as much as you can, pare things back a little to keep things stylish and serene.

'For a relaxed bedtime experience during warmer months, I start by removing items from the nightstand that add visual weight and are not functionally necessary,' says interior designer Barrett Oswald. 'Heavy charging stations, piles of books, and excessive decor may make your nightstand look messy, even if everything is neatly arranged.'

Treat your nightstand as an opportunity to show off only your most prized pieces. Your favorite vase, a treasured painting, or a sentimental trinket are best shown off in smaller doses. 'Instead, we opt for a streamlined approach,' adds Barrett. 'The goal of summer is to maintain lightness and simplicity in your surroundings.'

Add: Fresh Seasonal Florals

Seasonal stems will make your home feel like summer, and your sleep space feel calmer. Warmer nights call for a fresh breeze, meaning handpicked flowers will waft throughout your bedroom.

'I would always recommend picking flowers to make your nightstand feel summery and purposeful,' says Barrett. 'Even a thin vase with a single floral can create a welcoming and lighter atmosphere around the bed. And although we all wish to get rid of chargers on our nightstands, it may be unrealistic. I like to use a cute catch-all to place my phone instead. We also enjoy putting summer-scented candles on the nightstand as a seasonal touch.'

Warm summer temperatures call for evenings spent outside, and evenings spent outside call for ample outdoor lighting ideas – to set the mood, to create an inviting atmosphere outdoors, and to keep things illuminated after the sun goes down.

Though traditional outdoor light styles like pendants, string lights, and portable lamps are essential for brightening dark outdoor areas, I've found a portable light that blends so effortlessly into the landscape. It's called the Solar Pebble Light from Anthropologie, and as the name suggests, it looks just like a glowing pebble – an organic shape that would be perfectly disguised on a lawn, patio or poolside.

This pebble light is one of the most unique outdoor lights I've seen this summer with its organic, stone-inspired shape and soft light output. Unassuming during the day, its solar panels will soak up the sun, and at nightfall, its magical glow will subtly illuminate your patio, yard, or garden.

Being portable and solar powered, it can be positioned anywhere you want it to – so long as it has access to the sun to charge. Get a few and use them as chic walkway lights or patio perimeter lights, or scatter some within your flower beds to create a whimsical garden scene. This solar light will look best when it's naturally integrated with your existing plants and backyard decor, as if it were always meant to be there.

This solar pebble lamp reminds me of how important it is to plan outdoor lighting with the same thought and intention as indoor lighting. It's not all about having one big light; in fact, most spaces – inside or out – look better when light is layered with other light features and at varying levels.

Since this light is meant to rest on the ground, it creates a base layer of lighting for your outdoor space. I'd complement it with some mid-level lighting, like an outdoor wall sconce or a table lamp, and complete the scene with overhead lighting. Each of these layers can set the mood for different scenarios – the table lamps and overheads for outdoor events like dinner parties or game nights outside, and the ground-level pebble lights for quiet, cozy evenings outdoors.
