'Mixing these different finishes, whether the same material or separate, creates a lot of dimension in the kitchen. It allows the copper to pop and act as the jewelry of the kitchen. Additionally, there is an opportunity for this mixing within appliances,' like a cooker. With this piece, you can experiment with different handles and stainless steel finishes to 'tie the kitchen design together.'

In 2015, The New York Times referred to Le Labo's Santal 33 fragrance as 'that perfume you smell everywhere.' Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have reportedly listed their marital home – a $60 million architectural phenomenon, complete with a wine cellar, spa, and zero-edge pool. However, it will come as no surprise that even the living and cooking areas have set the standard for modern interior desgin and Californian luxury.

According to TMZ, JLo and actor Ben Affleck have enlisted real estate agent Santiago Arana from The Agency to sell the property, which they purchased in June 2023. The couple spent nearly two years, searching over 80 properties, before they settled on the mansion. However, reports say that Affleck has moved out of the home and into a rental in Brentwood while their marriage is in trouble.

As the publication shares, JLo and Affleck are asking 'around $65 million' for their megamansion. They will also have to pay a broker's commission and a new tax that's enforacble on expensive properties, meaning they'll likely sell the renovated home at a loss.

'Natural light and good ventilation are key components of Feng Shui, as they help to refresh energy and keep the space feeling vibrant and airy. She recommends incorporating large windows or skylights where possible and using light, sheer curtains to maximize natural light.

'If natural light is limited, consider using mirrors strategically [a technique also seen in Lopez's space] to reflect light and create a brighter atmosphere.'

'This is why the color choice for couches has significantly expanded, and big statement living room sofas now come in almost every color imaginable – sofas can certainly be the style setter in a room versus just there for practicality,' she explains.

'If you’re not confident with color, introduce accent colors in smaller areas to brighten up a room,' says designer Clara Ewart. Here at H&G, we're big fans of the kitchen island. Both a communal gathering spot and a provider of additional surface space, the island can be customized with stone finishes or bright paint to fit any kitchen style.

'Kithcen islands are a perennial favorite but are even more in demand for families as we treat our kitchens as workspaces, classrooms, and culinary hubs,' says Tom Howley, Creative Design Director at the eponymous kitchen company. 

'We are now taking it to the next level and expanding our island space by doubling up for two worktops. Having double kitchen islands serves a variety of purposes to make multifunctional life easier – providing twice the counter space in the kitchen for food prep, and even offering a second sink to streamline the cooking process.'

Tom recommends designating different purposes for each island so that the spaces remain tidy and optimized for their jobs.

'Typically, one island serves a more functional role – great for food prep and may include a second sink or even a dishwasher, streamlining the cooking process,' he explains. 

'The second island is then dedicated to entertaining or eating. It often has an area for bar stools, allowing guests to relax as you prepare a meal or for your children to do their homework while you whip up an after-school snack. This feel can also be achieved by having a large central island with a nearby kitchen table, where you can indulge in your morning coffee, enjoy an informal breakfast with the family, or raise a glass with friends.'

Ideal as hubs for communal activities, double kitchen islands are an unexpected design choice we can get behind.

'They have more color and texture within them than straight black – a monochrome scheme of black and white is much more unforgiving than one of shades of slate and clay, which will change subtlety with the light throughout the day, giving them personality and character.'

Cabinets aside, Jennifer and Ben's kitchen follows a similarly neutral palette, with marble countertops and white-painted walls. Decorating with neutrals is a failsafe way to ensure our spaces stand the test of time, but Helen Shaw, a color expert from Benjamin Moore, explains there are yet more ways to bring this color to life. 

'Remaining a go-to neutral, gray pairs well with almost every other hue. For a bolder look, pair with jewel-inspired tones such as deep forest green or a rich navy. This combination creates a glamorous and sophisticated classic scheme that is great for both a modern or classic kitchen space,' she explains.

'For a softer approach, opt for pastel hues such as blush pink. Such hues married with a lighter gray create an airy, minimalist feel, perfect for creating a feeling of calm and tranquility in a busy space such as a kitchen.'

Currently, there is a discernible shift in preferences within the gray spectrum,' Jennifer says. This is where Jennifer and Ben's green-gray hue comes into play. 

'Current design trends lean towards green grays, which infuse a touch of natural serenity into spaces, are gaining popularity. These tones bring a sense of tranquility and connection to the outdoors, creating a harmonious and refreshing atmosphere.'

Gray-green is establishing itself as a superior new neutral, and this is only unsurprising when we consider Jennifer Lopez's (albeit unintentional) endorsement. However, it's not the only gray-infused shade currently sought-after among designers.

'Similarly, grays with brown undertones, often referred to as "greige," have also become increasingly sought after,' Jennifer says. 'Greige strikes a balance between gray and beige, offering a more versatile and warm alternative to traditional cool grays. This blend of gray and beige hues brings a sense of comfort, grounding, and earthiness to interior spaces.'

There are last-minute Christmas decorations – and then there are those that can transform a room in seconds. The latter is thankfully the case with Jennifer Lopez's kitchen garland.

'Also, consider garlands or wreaths around the kitchen too; the chimney breast or on top of wall units with the lights on are great locations to add them if you can.'

And Adrian isn't the only kitchen designer who encourages us to follow Jennifer's lead. The design specialists at  Magnet emphasize that Jennifer's look is one of the easiest last-minute Christmas decor quirks we can try, even if it is only a few hours until the big day.

'Hanging faux (or real) greenery to the frame of your windows brings nature into your kitchen and creates a cozy aesthetic,' they say.

'You can add fairy lights, pine cones, berries, or eucalyptus leaves​​ to highlight further and fill out the feature. If you do not have any suitable windows to work with, you can attach garlands to the top of wall cabinets or doorways for a similar effect.'

We love these garlands that will impress wherever we hang them. However, we will need to be quick ordering to ensure we get them for Christmas day.

‘Over recent times there has been an explosion in high-tech digital printing which has changed the game somewhat, allowing a huge amount of experimentation and emerging new designers,’ explains Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin.

‘The choice is vast, but it is a highly personal one, thoroughly dependent on the house and the room, not to mention your mood and personality. Wallpaper has taken the interior world by storm in recent years, and frankly, anything goes from geometrics and trompe l'oeil, floral and animal, modern or contemporary, grass cloths, fabrics and murals.’

French country design is often rightly associated with traditional homes, many exhibiting architectural assets (such as wooden beams) that complement this rustic style. However, we don't always need a contemporary base to experiment with some French country-inspired elements, and it would seem Jennifer Lopez agrees.  

JLo offered a look inside her modern gray-and-white kitchen, with sleek vertical cabinets and shiny countertops reflecting the overhead spotlights. On the surface, this space is not a conventional base for French country decor, but that hasn't stopped her from experimenting with this design aesthetic.

Jennifer Lopez has sold her Bel Air mansion, designed by architect Samuel Marx, for just under $34 million. 

The sale of this home comes months after the singer purchased a $61 million property in the nearby Wallingford Estates alongside her husband, Ben Affleck. He also sold his Pacific Palisades home for $28.5 million in 2022, reports suggest. Jennifer originally purchased this French country-style home for $28 million in 2016 from the actress Sela Ward and her husband, entrepreneur Howard Sherman.

Situated only moments away from the Hotel Bel-Air, the estate comprises eight verdant acres, offering a quintessential European escape in the center of Los Angeles. Its stone façade offers a hint of the rustic architectural assets that hide behind its front door, but of course, they come with a contemporary twist.

The main level epitomizes this blend of modern-traditional elements – exhibiting high wooden ceilings, a stone fireplace, steel windows, and doors opening to stone terraces. The main living room uses curved, neutral furnishings to ensure the rustic base is versatile, soothing, and able to top contemporary design trends.

A white kitchen leads from the main living and dining area – complete with tall cabinets, decorative open shelving, and a built-in breakfast area. The kitchen leads to another family room with a bar that opens to a terrace with a three-sided infinity-edge pool.

The primary suite wing, located upstairs, has a private library, fireplace, his & her dressing rooms, and sun-filled bathrooms opening to the landscaped terraces and tranquil cascading stream. The upstairs floor also has a home office, a massage room, and a guest bedroom. 

Outside, the expansive grounds house another guest house, a gym, and a 100-seat amphitheater. The space is perfect for entertaining, thanks to its pavilion with an outdoor kitchen, a private lake with a sandy beach, and a shower.

The grounds also include a large motor court, additional parking, and a sprawling lawn, enveloped by mature trees and plants for unrivaled privacy.

When it comes to adding value to our property, Josh explains that it can be hard to put an 'exact' figure on this color's cost benefits – but its appeal among potential buyers is indisputable. 

'From an economic standpoint, using white paint on your front porch can positively impact your property's resale value. While there is no exact science behind how much painting with this particular color helps increase value, studies have found that neutral shades such as white are typically seen as more desirable by potential buyers than bolder or brighter shades,' he says.

'Furthermore, painting with a lighter hue will help emphasize the architectural details in homes from various periods, which could factor into whether someone decides to buy.'

NYC-born actress and singer Jennifer Lopez, who grew up in the Bronx, now resides with her actor husband Ben Affleck in Los Angeles. We’ve been lucky enough to catch glimpses into the couple’s plush home, and today, we’re honing in on the kitchen which features a unique interior design choice.

Lopez took to Instagram last week to share a video of her making a birthday cocktail in collaboration with Delola, a drinks brand founded by herself.

Whilst the cocktail being crafted looks impressive, what really grabbed our attention was the addition of a dried floral installation, which hangs above Lopez in the video. 

The modern kitchen is sleek in design, featuring white marble kitchen countertops and neutral-toned integrated gloss cabinets, and so the dried floral arrangement creates a real talking point in the otherwise understated room. 

Thanks to the room’s high ceilings, which feature traditional coving, there is the luxury of being able to play with the extra height to add a point of interest as demonstrated by Lopez. 

The installation is a combination of dried lavender which hangs upside down, as well as a mismatched display of wicker and black wire baskets. Whilst installations such as this are more commonly seen at events, for example as an Easter-themed display, we love the idea of making this more of an everyday feature in the home.

With a nod to rustic design, the dried floral installation injects a sense of farmhouse kitchen chic into the modern and minimally-designed kitchen. Installations such as this are a great way to experiment with new styles; their non-comital nature compared to larger, investment furniture pieces means they can be moved between rooms and swapped out or altered over time, or perhaps upgraded to reflect the changing seasons.

Another benefit of opting for dried flowers in place of fresh flowers is their longevity: dried flowers will last permanently and bring joy to the space indefinitely, in comparison to the short lifespan of fresh flowers.

We talked to Aviva Samuels, founder of event planning and design firm Kiss the Planner, who agrees: 'A growing trend, dried flowers as home decor is the salvation for those missing a green thumb. They last forever and stay vibrant over time. Plus, they're super eco-friendly because they don't require sunlight or water, making them virtually a no-maintenance delight.'

Interior designer, Janna Robinson goes agrees with this sentiment. ‘A window in the shower will brighten and give the illusion of a larger space. It can add an elevated decor element to the design of your bathroom. It’s a delightful way to appreciate a gorgeous view.’

Aside from the aesthetic perks, experts say a shower window can have benefits for ventilation and health. ‘A small window can assist in ventilation, helping to reduce moisture and prevent mold,’ Mohammed advises. 'The natural light and fresh air are inviting, invigorating, healthy and can eliminate mildew.’ 

Furthermore, she says a shower window ‘can also be a benefit to your energy savings, as it may provide enough light during the day where you don’t need to switch on your bathroom lights.’ Your body and your wallet with thank you.

A shower window can be a risky choice, mostly because ‘privacy can be an issue depending on the location of the window and your exterior surroundings’ according to designer Janna Robinson. However, with careful consideration, this concern is easily mitigated. 

‘If the bathroom is on a higher floor or in an area where privacy isn't a major concern, a window in the shower can be a lovely feature,’ says Mohammed. Where being higher up  is not an option he says ‘alternatively, you can use frosted or textured glass to maintain privacy if you're on the ground floor or near neighbors.’ 

Jennifer Lopez’s window for instance shows a view of the tops of trees, indicating that it is on a higher floor where no one can see in. With prior planning, a shower window has all of the visual and ventilation advantages without any of the privacy concerns.

Esteemed fashion designer Christian Siriano – who has dressed Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, and Zendaya (to name but a few) – has announced his bridge into the interior design world this New York Fashion Week. 

The Annapolis-born designer, who is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, is collaborating with luxury kitchen and bathroom brand DXV – known for infusing beauty and creativity into luxury living. 

Christian Siriano designed a limited-edition bathrobe and hand towel set that pays homage to 'the opulence and glamor' of the nostalgic 1920s – shown through the intricate geometric stitching and the gold and white coloring. Inevitably, the pieces are set to dominate towel trends and serve as the must-have that every fashion enthusiast didn't know they needed until now. 

Following the announcement, Christian Siriano's models wore the robes backstage at his New York Fashion Week Fall-Winter 2023 show that took place on February 9th, and we're already looking at how to get our hands on these bathroom essentials – that Christian describes as 'wearable art.'

'It has been such a pleasure partnering with DXV, which I believe emphasizes the many parallels that can be drawn between fashion and home design as vehicles for self-expression,' Christian Siriano says.

The space in question (and the catalyst behind the collection) is the bathroom in the designers' 279-year-old home in Easton, Connecticut. 

When designing a spa bathroom, Christian Siriano was struck by  DXV’s 'elegant' pieces, with faceted edges, that celebrate the Art Deco movement from which they were modeled. Drawing inspiration from this collection, the designer's bathrobe, and hand towels boast a similar aesthetic synonymous with the 1920s. 

'Our partnership with Christian demonstrates the many similarities between our seemingly disparate worlds of bathroom and kitchen design and luxury fashion, adds Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, the leader of LIXIL Global Design for the Americas.

Jennifer Lopez has listed her $42.5 million French-style mansion (her home of six -years) following her marriage to actor Ben Affleck seven months ago. 

The actress and singer, who is best known for her roles in Marry Me, Hustlers, and The Boy Next Door, reportedly paid $28 million for the prestigious property (that is one of the world's best homes) in 2016. She is now asking $42.5 million for – what the listing labels – as a 'rare and extraordinary estate' (according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the news). 

Ben Affleck similarly listed his Pacific Palisades mansion for $30 million almost immediately following the wedding. It sold in September 2022, per local property records. The Batman vs Superman actor has another property in Georgia that played host to the couple's much-anticipated wedding ceremony.

The roughly 14,000-square-foot home was originally designed by modernist architect Samuel Marx who was influenced by international style. However, it has since received a contemporary makeover – reworked into a French Country-inspired multi-structure that uses an assortment of stone and woods that accentuate its organic surroundings.

Beyond the hardwood door, the interiors continue to pay homage to the late architect – boasting a timeless stone fireplace, high ceilings, and glass doors that open to the terraces (the listing notes). 

In terms of design, much of the estate boasts a primarily neutral color palette – seen through the cream and gray living room and chef's kitchen drenched in SoCal sunlight. The tin-roofed cottage features an original brickwork fireplace, exposed beam ceiling and stone tiled floor. Its attractive outdoor deck overlooks the property’s scenic riverfront dock that even has a replica of Ernest Hemingway’s much-loved fishing boat, Pilar, on a lift.

The oyster house

Lastly, a short walk away from the main house will lead you out on to to the Oyster House. 

This property is a 10,000-square-foot, five-bedroom residence. It includes three master suites and an array of kids’ rooms featuring rustic bunk beds constructed from timber salvaged from old sailing ships.  

This home was previous listed for 7.6 million US dollars (6.9 million euros) by Engel & Völkers.
