There is also something particularly timely about the trend. In an increasingly digital world, interiors that celebrate craftsmanship, natural materials, patina, and pieces with a sense of history can offer a feeling of permanence. Newstalgia allows us to surround ourselves with things that feel meaningful and familiar, while still leaving room for modern design.

If the interior design world is moving away from cool minimalism, this could be the blueprint for 2027: less stark, more soulful, and rooted in the materials, colors, and memories that make a house feel like home.

As much as I love hosting in my apartment, square footage is limited. I'm working with an open-plan space that doesn't currently feel like it has a dedicated hosting hub. It's important to choose pressure-treated timber to ensure longevity, as the last thing you want is for your wooden borders to rot after just one or two harsh winters.

On a practical note, raised beds are a great choice, too, advises Drew Swainston, Homes & Gardens' Gardens Content Editor: 'Raised beds are an attractive and efficient way to grow flowers in the garden. If you have poorer soil, such as heavy or nutrient-poor ground, raised beds allow you to fill them with fertile, well-draining soil that plants will thrive in. Cut flowers will be happiest in free-draining soil, rather than sitting in heavy, saturated soil.'

When it comes to the best cutting garden flowers to grow, it will, of course, depend on the zone you live in and the season. Right now, Joanna's Texan garden is full of colorful foxgloves, tall delphiniums, and delicate white flowers (either Queen Anne's lace or ammi majus), whilst vibrant blue plumbago grows in the pots by her shed.

'Raised beds also warm earlier in the year than regular borders, meaning you can plant flowers a little bit sooner than when planting in the ground,' adds Drew. 'You can sow or plant annual cut flowers (such as the ammi majus) around a month earlier in raised beds than in the ground, depending on your climate, and it can be even sooner if you cover them with fleece or cloches to warm the soil.'

We love the way that Joanna's garden isn't purely functional, too. She's placed a pretty outdoor furniture set and parasol in the perfect spot to sit and admire her handiwork (when it's not raining, perhaps!). You, too, can really make a feature of a space like this, and it might even make you rethink a terrace or patio area – instead of slabs, lay gravel for a more rustic look and set your raised beds in rows, like Joanna Gaines.

You might also want to add some trellis or wooden pergola-style structures for trailing plants to grow up for a more wild and country-inspired look, and place a collection of pots, or wooden garden decorations in unused corners for varied height and interest.

A final tip from Drew for the best Spring show: 'If you have biennial or perennial flowers in raised beds, such as delphiniums and foxgloves, you should feed the soil in spring to create the best display. Adding a fresh layer of compost in spring or sprinkling some balanced, slow-release fertilizer will provide a dose of essential nutrients to help plants grow strongly and bloom profusely.'

Shelf styling, in my opinion, is an art form. Between positioning books and arranging decorative objects, it's as if you're creating your very own masterpiece in the heart of your home – a masterpiece that deserves to be lit.

‘For nearly 20 years, Chip Gaines and I imagined what it would be like to breathe new life into this abandoned, century-old castle in the heart of Waco, TX,’ Joanna shared. ‘The Castle taught us there’s great reward in restoring beauty in forgotten places. And that kind of work is always worth the wait.’

Three years post-renovation, the project reads like a bit of foreshadowing. Joanna was tapping interior trends that were only beginning to percolate across the design world; today, those same ideas feel fully crystallized – and, ironically, fresher than ever – inside a century-old structure.

The good news is that you don’t need a castle to design a home that never dates. Below, three timeless design moves from the project's storied sitting room that feel especially right as we head into 2026.

1. Mounting Candle Sconces

When Cottonland Castle was first built, electricity was more of a novelty, with candlelight often being the default, not a design choice. The romance, however, hasn’t aged a day. Now we use candle sconces for atmosphere rather than necessity, and fortunately, these accents have gotten far chicer since the early 1900s. Joanna Gaines has helped that evolution along herself, designing several elevated iterations for her Magnolia line, like the Adeline Antique Brass Double Wall Sconce which looks like it's been plucked from an antiques fair.

In the castle’s sitting room, Joanna chose a slim, classically inspired linear duo to counter the ornate molding elsewhere. It echoes the old–meets–new tension we love in Parisian flats and New York brownstones: a modern silhouette, rendered in antique brass, flanking the fireplace like a gentle nod to the room’s origins. Analog lighting ideas, contemporary lines, historically aware – and entirely right now.

2. Layering Natural Whites

In case you missed it, Pantone crowned 11-4201 TCX Cloud Dancer its 2026 Color of the Year – ‘a billowy, balanced white,’ per the institute’s release. The choice shocked just about everyone (designers were betting on chocolate or oxblood), but apparently Joanna Gaines was already in the loop with her castle fireplace vignette, which layers a crisp mantel white over a softer, gray-tinted, nature-washed white.

When it comes to decorating for the holiday season, I'm a firm believer in the 'more is more' philosophy – especially for lighting. Apparently, Joanna Gaines thinks the same, as her latest Christmas decor setup features a grand tree decked out with the most intricate and impactful arrangement of string lights.

In a video posted to her Instagram page, the designer shared a glimpse behind the scenes of this elaborate Christmas decorating idea. Lit from bottom to top with several conjoined strands of Home Depot's Clear Incandescent Mini String Lights and no branch left unadorned, Joanna's Christmas tree is a sight to be seen. It may have taken her and her team a couple of hours to complete the look, but the results are absolutely magical – a Christmas tree that rivals New York's iconic Rockefeller Center tree.
