Creating your own cutting garden is one of the best raised bed garden ideas, and whilst Joanna's beds aren't particularly high, she has raised them off the ground with some sturdy wooden timbers to create linear borders of flowers in her space. It's important to choose pressure-treated timber to ensure longevity, as the last thing you want is for your wooden borders to rot after just one or two harsh winters.

If your garden receives unwanted visitors, like rabbits or deer, who might nibble away at your young blooms, you may also want to install some critter-proof fencing to avoid your planting becoming snack food for the local wildlife.

On a practical note, raised beds are a great choice, too, advises Drew Swainston, Homes & Gardens' Gardens Content Editor: 'Raised beds are an attractive and efficient way to grow flowers in the garden. If you have poorer soil, such as heavy or nutrient-poor ground, raised beds allow you to fill them with fertile, well-draining soil that plants will thrive in. Cut flowers will be happiest in free-draining soil, rather than sitting in heavy, saturated soil.'

When it comes to the best cutting garden flowers to grow, it will, of course, depend on the zone you live in and the season. Right now, Joanna's Texan garden is full of colorful foxgloves, tall delphiniums, and delicate white flowers (either Queen Anne's lace or ammi majus), whilst vibrant blue plumbago grows in the pots by her shed.

'Raised beds also warm earlier in the year than regular borders, meaning you can plant flowers a little bit sooner than when planting in the ground,' adds Drew. 'You can sow or plant annual cut flowers (such as the ammi majus) around a month earlier in raised beds than in the ground, depending on your climate, and it can be even sooner if you cover them with fleece or cloches to warm the soil.'

We love the way that Joanna's garden isn't purely functional, too. She's placed a pretty outdoor furniture set and parasol in the perfect spot to sit and admire her handiwork (when it's not raining, perhaps!). You, too, can really make a feature of a space like this, and it might even make you rethink a terrace or patio area – instead of slabs, lay gravel for a more rustic look and set your raised beds in rows, like Joanna Gaines.

You might also want to add some trellis or wooden pergola-style structures for trailing plants to grow up for a more wild and country-inspired look, and place a collection of pots, or wooden garden decorations in unused corners for varied height and interest.

A final tip from Drew for the best Spring show: 'If you have biennial or perennial flowers in raised beds, such as delphiniums and foxgloves, you should feed the soil in spring to create the best display. Adding a fresh layer of compost in spring or sprinkling some balanced, slow-release fertilizer will provide a dose of essential nutrients to help plants grow strongly and bloom profusely.'

According to Joanna's visual assistant Liz, the best way to achieve this vivid Christmas tree light display is to start stringing the lights against the trunk at the base of the tree. From there, it's best to 'wrap each individual branch all the way up to the tip, and then you run it back all the way to the inside of the tree,' Liz explains in the video. After one branch is finished, continue to the next until you've finished the entire tree.

Because of the intricacy of the arrangement, this type of Christmas lighting idea might not be the quickest, but it is incredibly simple and effective. If you have a free afternoon, plenty of patience, and are eager to make your tree look as spectacular as can be, this idea is totally worth it. Each illuminated branch can make your tree look fuller, larger, and even more grand than it already is.

The amount of string lights you'll need depends on the size of your Christmas tree. Because Joanna's tree is so large, she and her team used several boxes of Home Depot's Clear Incandescent Mini String Lights. There are just seven days to go before I host Thanksgiving for the very first time – and after weeks of menu planning, I can finally turn my attention to the table. 'I was equally passionate about creating a house that kids could make their own, so we designed dozens of removable stickers that function as a styling toolkit, including potted plants, home decor, and kitchen essentials. This way, kids can tap into their own well of creativity and personal feeling of home as they build out these spaces.'

When I was a wedding florist, I used to get asked all the time about the best ways to preserve a bridal bouquet. More often than not I’d suggest taking it apart and either hanging it upside down to air dry it, or pressing each individual stem separately.

The latter option works beautifully with smaller and more slender flowers, but have you ever tried pressing a rose? Or any large bloom for that matter? It just doesn’t work. The heads are too big to fully flatten, and the first few times I attempted this for clients I would end up with a sad-looking brown mound of petals as a result. Not what you want to be showing a newly wed.

But fret not, for there is another option. And Joanna Gaines just shared it with us in a post about her magical and inspiring herbarium, where she does all of her wonderful flower preserving. In the video, she produced a fully dried and preserved rose from a plastic tub full of silica gel – a sand-like substance, which absorbs can moisture from a flower head. Here’s exactly how it works to dry flowers, and what other pieces of preserving kit we spotted in Joanna’s enchanting herbarium.

How silica gel works to dry flowers

Joanna describes her herbarium as a library of what she grows in the garden each year. As she says, preserving flowers is a way of 'recording your seasonal garden, but in a more artsy way'.

In the video she takes out a large plastic storage box, exactly like these ones from Amazon, and takes the lid off to reveal several preserved roses heads buried in a sand-like material – silica gel. Once she gently shakes off the gel from the petals, we can see a perfectly preserved rose.

Silica gel works by drawing out moisture from a flower, which means it will entirely preserve its color, shape and form. Because this process tends to happen quite quickly (within a couple of weeks), it prevents the flower head from decaying.

Most types of silica gel contain a color-changing element, which indicates when the preservation process has completed.

If you want to give this a go and preserve a bunch of blooms from your garden, you'll need quite a large amount to fill a deep box. We recommend at least 10L, this amount of silica gel from Amazon is ideal.

Joanna explains her roses have been in the gel for about two months and are totally dry, but they look as fresh as if they had just been cut, retaining their form and color completely.

Other ways to preserve flowers

As well as air drying them, a stunning method for preserving flowers and herbs is by pressing them, using a flower press kit just like this from Amazon.

Joanna shows us a beautifully rustic display of pressed herbs and flowers in a frame, as a way of displaying what she has grown in the garden every season.

This method requires a little more time and patience than preserving in silica gel, but the excitement of the reveal when you lift the press is worth it.
