Put into the mix, for instance, a large floral fabric, a small floral, a stripe, and a geometric textile or two.'

Ann Grafton, creative and managing director of GP&J Baker, says layerism is the new way to do maximalism for the year ahead.

'Layering pattern on pattern creates a rich, maximalist look. Maximalism tends to be most successful when the patterns used share a color palette. Try using several designs in a similar tone but vary the scales of the patterns by combining large statement prints with smaller block prints, to create a layered scheme.'

In a conversation with the New York Times, designers Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward described Brolin's taste as a mix of 'nutty kaleidoscope' and 'Old World European busyness' – this quiet nook is the perfect example of this ethos. 'Getting the configuration right is what makes or breaks the design and its functionality,' says Rachel Hutcheson, national retail manager at Sharps. 'A sensible place to start is by assessing your storage needs. Think about the volume of clothes and shoes that you have, whether you might need areas for books and artwork and how much space you might need in the future. You can combine hidden storage with open living room shelving to maximize space,' she adds.

Uniform-sized shelves are fine for libraries but less so for a home environment. When commissioning bespoke joinery, be sure to request a mix of heights to accommodate different sizes and shapes of tomes and objects. 'Patterns can range from subtle to bold, depending on the overall design scheme. When selecting a pattern, consider how it complements other elements in the room, such as rugs, drapes, and light fixtures.'

Lichtenstein says that another pro of chair skirts is their ability to introduce or restate an existing color palette.

'In Brolin’s dining room, the chair skirts tie into the colors of the rug, lamp shades, and even the walls, creating a unified look,' she says. 'For a cohesive design, choose colors that resonate with the existing decor, and don’t be afraid to play with shades and tones to add dimension.'

Finally, Lichtenstein says that texture choice on a chair skirt can have a massive impact on the appearance of a room.

'The choice of fabric for drapes and chair skirts can significantly impact the room's ambiance,' she states. 'Heavier, darker fabrics like the drapes in Brolin’s dining room contribute to an elegant, grounded feel, while lighter and lighter-colored fabrics like the chair skirts can make the space feel airy and casual. Consider the texture, weight, and color of the fabrics in relation to the overall design and desired atmosphere.'

Earthy tobacco shades will work in any room you want to feel warm and intriguing; it is a serious color, elegant and sophisticated, which creates a fabulous backdrop to artwork and antiques and works in a variety of spaces. I would pair this with the creamier off-whites, beiges and warm taupes for a softer palette or with a sludgy green or deep blue for instant drama.’
