How Would You Describe the Ledbury Studio Look and Style?

'Many luxury kitchen brands claim to offer bespoke services, but for us, true bespoke means tailoring every detail to the client’s vision – without limitations on style or material,' Charlie says.

'We favour the authenticity of solid sheet metals like copper, pewter, zinc, brass and steel, rather than liquid metal finishes. What's Been Your Favourite Kitchen You've Ever Designed and Why?

'My favourite kitchen I’ve designed has to be our Kensington kitchen. The project was part of a major two-year refurbishment of a stunning seven-floor Kensington home. The client wanted a space that reflected her ‘Australian Scandi’ aesthetic – combining the clean simplicity of Scandinavian design with the warmth of her Australian roots. Designing furniture that captured this balance was an exciting challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed.

To achieve the look, I used natural and painted oak for the cabinetry, keeping the space light and fresh. The pale oak was carefully book-matched on the drawers of the hob run and island, while the full-height cupboards were painted white to ensure they didn’t dominate the room. Fluted oak panels added texture to the island and the base of the breakfast bar, and for a touch of drama, I incorporated a Statuario marble worktop that cascades in a waterfall effect.'

'Attention to detail was key. I used patinated brass for the handcrafted handles, kickplates, and trim on the extractor hood, tying everything together with a refined, understated elegance. A standout feature is the sculptural hanging rack over the island, suspended from a curved, backlit ceiling section. It serves as both a functional storage solution and a striking focal point, perfect for task lighting and displaying trailing plants.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this kitchen is incredibly practical. Clever storage solutions keep it beautifully clutter-free, with features like a concealed pantry that also hides the microwave. The fluted oak detailing extends beyond the kitchen into the dining area and TV snug, creating a seamless flow throughout the space.

This kitchen is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can merge style and function, and it remains one of my proudest projects.'

‘Where once a luxury kitchen was defined solely by high-end materials and money-no-object fixtures, the definition has evolved. It may still showcase unique finishes, but today a luxury kitchen anticipates and surpasses the client’s every expectation. It meets every requirement they’ve imagined – and even those they didn’t know they had. This is the role of a bespoke kitchen designer: to explore every nuance of a client’s brief, uncover the heart of their desires, and translate it into a kitchen that is truly, unmistakably luxurious.’

How Has Your Ledbury Shaker Kitchen Evolved?

'Design shouldn’t stand still. The essence of design is to present something new and offer an alternative way of seeing things. I believe in staying open to new ideas and constantly evolving. With the Shaker kitchen, I took all the traditional elements and then added contemporary touches, such as variations on the frame and panel sizes of the doors, adding an oversized contemporary cornice and modern cast handles in aged and patinated brass.'

You’ve Been a Huge Proponent of the Classic Marquetry Design. What Does That Involve?

'Marquetry is the art of applying veneer pieces to furniture to form decorative patterns or designs. Staying true to Ledbury Studio’s signature aesthetic, our Marquetry Collection is a contemporary take on this traditional craft. For instance, in the Weybridge kitchen, the directional veneers were applied by hand to form a decorative pattern, inlaid with aged bronze, with bespoke handles in aged bronze to finish the look.'

What Materials and Finishes Do You Love to Use in a Kitchen?

'Metal adds sophistication and depth, qualities few other materials can match. At Ledbury Studio, we focus on real metals like copper, pewter, zinc and bronze, which bring an authenticity that painted metallic finishes on wood simply can’t replicate. The result is a refined, high-end aesthetic that elevates the space.

We’ve pioneered ways to use metals in door fronts, islands and bespoke cabinetry. Metal’s versatility allows us to age, texture, or patinate it, creating unique finishes. We’ve also explored liquid metal techniques like pewter shagreen and bronze inlays to add intricate detailing to surfaces.'

''Living metals' like copper and pewter develop a natural patina over time, which works beautifully for cabinet doors or island exteriors. However, high-use areas, such as around hobs and sinks, require sealed finishes to prevent discolouration and ensure durability. To enhance longevity, we apply specially formulated coatings to metals like copper, preserving their beauty while protecting them from everyday kitchen conditions. This lets homeowners enjoy the aesthetic of metal without sacrificing practicality.'

What Are Some of the Biggest Challenges You Face When Designing Kitchens in Historic or Heritage Spaces?

'Heritage properties come with a unique set of challenges, particularly if they’re listed and you have to work around certain features or accommodate uneven walls or floors. This is where bespoke furniture comes into its own, as every piece can be made exactly to fit – and to be freestanding, if fixing to the walls is difficult or even forbidden.

One particular example was the Stroud kitchen, which we created in a 16th-century Cotswolds home. Fitting furniture against the wonky walls or around the original doorways would have been too difficult. So, we avoided this issue by creating not only an island, but also two other large pieces of freestanding furniture to contain the ovens and the fridge, and the freezer.'

'We are exploring innovative techniques to craft curved designs in marble and stone, creating striking and dramatic kitchen islands. Additionally, I am passionate about incorporating English hardwoods, particularly English walnut – an under-appreciated yet exceptional resource – into my designs. 'The biggest consideration is planning the tile installation to create as many cuts as possible, meaning you want to create the height of the front apron with full tile dimensions,' Laura notes.

'You can elevate this application but using a stone top for the drop-in bathtub, and could even do stone on the front as well. We do this in all tile colors and stone; it is such a fun way to add style that emphasizes the color and pattern versus your typical apron front bathtub.'

'A great place to start is by simply using the same tile for the tub side profile as you do for the tub surround, which will instantly make the tub feel integrated and intentional rather than a separate element.'

Alternatively, if you do like a bolder scheme, your bathtub is a great place to introduce contrasting tiles, like in this design. 'For a bolder statement, contrasting tiles can be a great option. Just ensure the colors or textures complement the surrounding space rather than compete with it,' suggests Jamie.

Three different tiles have been used in this scheme, from the marble-look ones on the wall to the geometric design in the shower nook. It's not an enormous bathroom, and we felt that having the same backdrop helps to blend both areas and helps make them feel part of the same space,' explains interior designer Fiona Duke.

'These tiles have a wonderful gloss element, and not only is the room quite small, but it's also quite dark as it's in the middle of the home. The gloss tiles bounce light into the room, and the shape of the tile makes the room feel taller as they're a slightly longer tile than the average 'metro' tile.'

'For this bathroom, the space was for young twin girls. We wanted to create a whimsical space, but also a style that would grow with the girls. This is a Jack and Jill bathroom with entries on both sides of the vanity,' explains Laura.

'I love a checkerboard pattern, which we ran on the floor and then ran the pattern up the front of the bathtub as well as the shower wall. This type of application takes a lot of planning, but it creates such a charming room!'

When I embarked on the mission of remodeling the bathroom in our reno, I naively thought I knew what I was doing. After all, it is the third bathroom I've redesigned, and I work in interiors – what could go wrong?

But while I'd made great decisions on finding the right tiles, the perfect paint color, the $10 vintage sconces I tracked down on Facebook... I'd overlooked one crucial detail: bathroom storage. And once I started living in the space, I quickly realized just how impractical it was not to have a designated place to keep all my bathroom essentials tucked out of sight.

With just a chic shower niche to work with and a pedestal sink with no drawers or cabinet, my beautifully finished bathroom has quickly been overrun by beauty products, cleaning supplies, and errant toilet paper. So what was the solution to this bathroom design mistake?

Sure, there are plenty of routes I could've taken here. But rather than ripping anything out to add a bathroom vanity (I don't have the space) or bringing in a wall or freestanding bathroom cabinet (ditto), I decided to work with what I had.

So while my pedestal sink looked pretty, it certainly wasn't delivering on storage. I realized there was a way to give it a little more purpose. After some initial research, I thought I'd solved all my problems with this Farmhouse-style under-sink cabinet from Wayfair that just slots on, but it felt too cumbersome and encroached on the toilet too much in my small bathroom – if you have room, however, this is a great choice.

Turning to Pinterest for inspo, I instantly fell for the sink skirt. And while you might think that it's merely a cafe curtain added for aesthetics, hiding beneath it is a simple shelf system that wraps neatly around the pedestal base and creates plenty of space for baskets, bottles, and beauty.

The bathroom is inherently a functional space, filled with plenty of easy-clean hard surfaces. But that doesn't mean it can't be softened with a little whimsy. A sink skirt, made from gathered fabric, is a brilliant way to introduce pattern, print, and color to your bathroom.

To create your own skirt, there are a few options available. You can buy lengths of fabric and make your own curtain by creating a small pocket at the top and threading through a Net Curtain Cord from Amazon, or adding VELCRO Sticky Back for Fabrics from Walmart to attach it. Alternatively, you can turn to Etsy, where there are loads of sellers who will make you a beautiful custom curtain to your measurements.

One of my favorite hacks to avoid the hefty cost of fabric lengths is to buy a tablecloth instead. I did this for an open cabinet in my kitchen and used a brass curtain pole to create a pretty gingham cafe curtain, and used a different tablecloth to create my sink skirt with some velcro. It is a great way to find unique and beautiful fabrics without having to spend a fortune per metre, just be sure to check the measurements before ordering!

Now that the sink skirt is in place, the bathroom feels so much more considered. I finally have a home for my overflow of skincare – and it’s all hidden behind a pretty curtain that actually adds texture and color to the space.

It’s a small DIY update, but a budget-friendly, easy one that has made a big difference in both the function and feel of the room, and makes the room feel more designed than it did before. I just wish I'd done it sooner.

Sometimes it’s only by living in a space that you figure out what’s missing – and that’s okay. Slow renovating gives you the benefit of sitting back and assessing each project as you go, affording you the luxury of pivoting, making mistakes, and finding fun ways to fix them.

By making a small, thoughtful addition after the fact, I’ve turned a design oversight into a feature that actually improves the space. It’s a good reminder that a home is never truly finished; there are always improvements to be made even in the smallest of spaces.

'Daily wipe-downs (often multiple times a day), always using coasters and pot holders, and being diligent about using a cutting board – especially when working with oils like olive oil – are essential to prevent staining and etching,' she explains.

Knowing how to clean marble surfaces, and doing it regularly is key. 'While sealed marble is more resistant to stains, no stone is completely stain-proof, so spills should be cleaned up quickly,' says Oliver, who recommends using 'light soapy water' and 'avoiding harsh chemicals' if you want to keep them in beautiful condition overtime.

Have a few cleaning supplies kept aside that you use solely to clean your marble countertops to ensure you don't risk mixing in any unwanted ingredients or chemicals. Refillable options, like these amber glass spray bottles, and a microfibre cleaning cloth are all you need.

'The good news is that any damage can be repaired – stains can be removed with a poultice, and the surface can be re-polished as needed. We always recommend taking samples home to get a feel for how the material works in your space,' he adds.

To keep your marble countertops in the best condition possible, Becky recommends consulting professionals on occasion to help with the upkeep. 'It’s important to have your marble professionally resealed every 3–5 years. Superficial scratches can typically be buffed out, so when it’s time to reseal, it’s a good opportunity to have your fabricator give the surface a light polish to restore its finish.'

Transform a dresser into a bathroom vanity

Before you set your heart on transforming any dresser into a vanity, you need to make sure it's made of the right materials, treated properly to combat moisture, and open to modification to cope with the existing plumbing. If all is good, it can neatly fit in with your bathroom vanity ideas and become a strong focal point for your new-look bathroom. 

Tools you'll need

Before you start don’t forget to isolate the water supply and have all the necessary tools to hand:

• Paint/varnish/stain

A step by step guide

1.  Select a vanity unit 

Selecting the right unit is important to getting a functional and attractive finish. Think about the height and width of the selected item. If too low, you will be bending over too far, making it uncomfortable to use. 

If you were wondering how high a bathroom vanity should be, the common height for a bathroom sink is 30-36 inches, so consider this when choosing your dresser. 

Also, think about the depth and width of the unit. Make sure the top will fit the sink you want to use. Finally, make sure to prioritize quality and moisture-resistant materials. 

2. Prepare your plumbing  

Check your current plumbing and see how this will match up with your chosen dresser. Will you need to extend or reroute any pipework to get a good fit? For example, is the dresser higher than the current unit, so the pipework to the sink might need to be extended. 

However, it is typically easier to modify the dresser rather than the plumbing. Mark out the areas where pipes will go accurately. If any modification to the plumbing needs to be made, do this before prepping the vanity unit. 

3. Remove dresser back (optional) 

A dresser typically has a back panel that can be removed. This is the easiest option, as you won’t need to make any cuts for pipework. If you want to keep the back panel in place, mark and cut out any holes for pipework coming from the wall. 

4. Sand and prep dresser 

The first step is to remove any hardware, such as handles. If you have any drawers, remove them and prep them separately. Now get a detail sander like this CRAFTSMAN Detail Sander from Amazon. Start off with a 120 grit sandpaper to remove any previously paint/varnish/stain. Then, change to a 180-220 grit sandpaper to finish. 

Sand all visible areas and drawer fronts. Wipe down with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Now, apply a primer with a brush and mini roller if painting and leave to dry. Now add your top coat. Use a suitable wood paint. Alternatively, use a suitable varnish or stain.  

5. Cut and fit sink 

Measure the top of the dresser and mark with a pencil where the sink is going to go. Make sure it's forward enough to accommodate the faucets and any pipework. After marking out and checking your measurements for pipes and faucets, get a drill and make a hole large enough to fit a jigsaw blade. Do another three holes, even spaced around the marked out pencil line for the sink.   

Place the jigsaw blade into one of the holes and follow the marked out line to the next hole. Continue until the wood is cut out. If you need separate hole(s) for the faucets use a Forstner drill bit, obviously the right size to fit the faucets.

Get a silicone bathroom sealant like this Gorilla White 100% Silicone Sealant from Walmart and put a line just outside the sink hole, and install the sink. This helps create a waterproof seal and holds the sink in place.  

6. Modify drawers 

Depending on the number and configuration of the drawers, some will not be able to close fully. Typically the ones that back on to the sink pipework. In some cases you can reduce the depth of the drawer so it can fully close. Or, if this is not a viable option, remove the drawer and attach the drawer front to the dresser to create a false drawer.  

7. Final fix 

Now position the dresser, lining up the sink and faucets with the plumbing and connect. Make sure that the connections are tight, so there’s no leakage. Now fix the dresser to the wall with appropriate brackets. Finally add a bead of sealant around the sink, smooth out and replace the dresser hardware to finish.
