While kitchen storage is an incredibly practical element of a design, it can also be an aesthetic one. Instead of sticking to classic kitchen cabinets throughout a space, breaking them up with custom builds not only creates a unique space, but also opens up opportunities to mix closed and open storage.

Here, a custom built-in hutch sits on the far wall, featuring a long plate rack, an open shelf, and the main kitchen sink. It blends storage with beautiful display opportunities, all while introducing a more historic charm to the design. It's practical, yet stands out as a beautiful design moment within the kitchen.

'I think this is the best way to show so many beautiful patterns and colors while being practical,' says Kate Towill, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Basic Projects. 'All these items they use every day! I love that. I hate when people have 'china that only comes out once a year' – beautiful things are meant to be used and celebrated!'

Use an Island to Add Warmth, Vintage Style, and Functional Workspace

A large, built-in island has many benefits, but it can also make a kitchen feel smaller and, in this kitchen's case, create a modern feature that takes away from the more traditional, collected look. But Kate found the most characterful alternative. 'I love a found piece for an island; honestly, the Brits do it the best in their kitchens. We wanted something that stood out and felt elevated yet still worn,' she explains.

The wood adds a heavy dose of warmth to the neutral space, and ties in beautifully with the ceiling beams and doors leading to adjoining rooms. The freestanding, prep-table style is much more open, creating a sense of more space. But it also adds extra drawer storage and plenty of surface space. 'This piece had to be hardworking too,' Kate adds. 'We worked with a local cabinet maker to create this custom piece – I love how it turned out.'

Invest in Kitchen Flooring That Feels Truly Timeless

It's easy to overlook kitchen flooring ideas. Simple, neutral slabs or classic wooden flooring have become go-to options for a blend of traditional style and functional design. But sometimes – especially in a neutral kitchen – choosing flooring that adds interest and texture is the difference between a nice and truly elegant scheme.

'This tile was a real effort, but I love how it turned out. We wanted the proportions to be just right, and it had to feel old,' Kate explains. 'We found a maker in Turkey to do our exact dimensions and a properly tumbled white and black marble so it felt old and lived-in. If an octagon and dot is too large, it can feel too grand and not cozy like this one.'

Give Your Kitchen Seating the Living Room Treatment

The kitchen has once again become the heart of the home, but if you're going to spend more time in these rooms, you'll need comfortable seating – something that invites you to sit and linger long after the cooking is done. In this kitchen, a charming seating space in front of one of the grand windows maximizes comfort, featuring an upholstered love seat, two mini armchairs, and an antique table that adds character in abundance.

'I really love some soft seating in a kitchen; another design element I think the Brits do so well. It creates informality in the kitchen and really makes you want to cozy up for a morning coffee or glass of wine while your partner cooks,' Kate notes. 'I love these pieces from Nickey Kehoe. We also used outdoor fabric on the settee to be extra practical – these clients have young kids and a dog; it’s important nothing feels off limits!'

Take a Collected Approach to Decor for a Lived-In Feel

One of this kitchen's greatest successes is the way storage has been utilized to double as decor. There is plenty of closed cabinetry to keep the space tidy and clutter-free, but the small moments of open storage allow collected ceramics to become display pieces, enjoyed every day, rather than just on special occasions. And it works because the pieces were genuinely found over time, rather than bought in one go.

'We did just that; we collected so many different things we all loved,' Kate recalls. It became an important part of the design process, but also one of the most enjoyable. 'I took the clients to Round Top with me and we found some beautiful pieces like the large display cabinet and the marble table base. We also worked with my talented friend at PORTA to curate all the beautiful plate-ware/bowls on the shelves!'

1. Warm, Character-Rich Woods

Wooden kitchens have been back at the forefront of designs for the past couple of years, but expect things to get a little warmer in 2027. White oak has dominated recent trends, but Shea predicts richer tones of species like walnut to have more of a moment, adding depth and interest to kitchens of every style and size.

'We're loving the return to warmer wood tones in kitchens – walnut, oak, anything that really lets the grain and natural variation come through. After years of bright, all-white kitchens, people want spaces that feel warmer and more grounded. Like they have a little history to them,' she explains.

'The key to making this feel timeless is not treating wood as a trend. Use it where it can become part of the architecture – cabinetry, an island, or even a furniture-style hutch – and pair it with quieter materials like natural stone and aged metals. Those are combinations that have been beautiful for generations.'

2. Soft Kitchens

Kitchens are getting softer and more lived-in, and this shift is directly impacting how we design and decorate our spaces. Functionality is still a priority, but there's a growing emphasis on cozier, more living room-like features that make you want to spend time in these spaces beyond cooking.

'We're seeing kitchens become less utilitarian and much more integrated with the rest of the home. Instead of every inch being traditional cabinetry, we love to use freestanding pieces, artwork, lamps, open shelving, and furniture-inspired details to give the kitchen more personality,' Shea explains.

'This resonates now because people want their homes to feel collected rather than overly prescribed. To keep it timeless, introduce those details in ways that feel authentic to how you live. A vintage-inspired cabinet for storage, a beautiful piece of art, or a table lamp on the counter can soften hard surfaces without requiring you to commit to a major design statement.'

3. Richer, More Expressive Stone

Creating a timeless space no longer means choosing a kitchen countertop that feels safe and simple. The chicest kitchens dare to go bolder, and trends are shifting toward more expressive stones that add personality and texture.

'Natural stone has always been a favorite of ours, but right now we're especially drawn to stones with more movement, warmth, and variation,' She explains. 'We’re moving away from the idea that every permanent finish needs to be perfectly quiet. People are more comfortable allowing one material to bring character to the room.'

The key to its success is balancing it with the other finishes and materials in the kitchen. 'For longevity, let the stone be the statement and give everything around it some restraint,' she advises. 'Rather than combining several bold finishes, carry one beautiful stone across the countertops and backsplash, then balance it with classic cabinetry and simple hardware. Natural materials have an inherent variation and patina, which is part of why they tend to age so beautifully.'

For interior designer Amber Lewis, less is more when it comes to fall kitchen decor, with an emphasis on decorative details inspired by the season, rather than leaning into fall clichés. Here's how she transitions a kitchen from summer to fall, and the art of knowing when to stop.

As kitchens have become more social and a bit softer in style, decor has become essential for a more personalized, lived-in feel. And not just the accessories – even kitchenware can bring a whole new layer of style to your cooking space. But as we head toward fall and start decorating for the season, how much of our decor should we really change?

'Not much, honestly,' says Amber, who suggests subtler changes that hint at a cozier season without being too literal. 'Add a warm-toned runner, or hang some fresh kitchen linens near the sink – that's plenty. The bones of the room (your cabinetry, countertops, and hardware) should be timeless enough that they don't need seasoning.'

The biggest mistake people make is thinking they have to completely swap out every decorative element of their kitchen each season, especially fall when the shift feels most significant. Be intentional with how you decorate – less really is more in a practical room.

Transitioning your kitchen decor requires only a few simple changes that signal the arrival of fall. Color is a classic starting point, but Amber recommends a more nature-inspired palette for a sense of longevity beyond a single season – colors that still feel cozy and thoughtful as we head into the winter months, rather than the bold oranges and yellows associated with this time of year.

'I gravitate towards rust, olive, and warm camel tones for the fall. They're earthy without being obnoxiously autumnal, so they don't read as decor you’ll have to swap out come January,' she explains, adding that your kitchen linens are a great way to introduce these seasonal hues. 'The Celia Table Runner in Terre and Roland Raffia Placemat are a few of my personal picks. And for a final touch, the washable Josie 02 Earth / Natural Runner Rug is a functional and beautiful addition!'

The same enduring approach applies to the materials and textures you introduce, and how you introduce them. The most successful fall kitchens add seasonal style with pieces that aren't just visual, but functional, too, like a rustic cutting board that adds warmth and structure to shelving, or handmade mugs that transition a coffee station from cold brews to hot drinks.

'Material-wise, I love bringing in a handmade ceramic or a woven basket for an easy fall update – anything with an organic, tactile quality feels warmer as the seasons change,' Amber continues. 'High-quality tableware should lay your foundation, and I’m particularly drawn to handmade pieces with yummy texture like the Portia Ceramic Dinnerware and Handblown Cafe Glasses.'

Texture brings a fall feel to your kitchen while balancing style and function. A woven basket adds tactility and meaningful storage, while handmade ceramics look beautiful on display while serving a practical purpose in your cooking space.

These ideas feel at home in the kitchen and add a chic fall feel rather than leaning into clichés – something Amber recommends avoiding. 'Skip the pumpkins-on-every-surface approach and focus on texture instead of a theme,' she advises. 'A chunky linen table runner, a stack of well-worn cutting boards, a bowl filled with something seasonal but not literal – that’s how you create those fall vibes without it feeling like a copy-paste from Pinterest.'

We want kitchens with character, kitchens that are lived-in, maybe a bit imperfect, but feel like the true heart of the home. So how do you transform a room filled with hard, shiny surfaces into an eclectic space with plenty of personality?

According to this Mediterranean-style kitchen, texture, interest, and thoughtful material choices are key to a design that balances everyday function with vintage charm and architectural interest. It's less about filling a space with an overwhelming amount of decor and more about making the bones work harder.

From unexpected color placements that create a more inviting feel to functional elements that double as statement features, this kitchen proves that knowing when to push the style boundaries and when to stick to fundamental design rules is the secret to an elevated room.

Introduce Color in Unexpected Places

Kitchen colors play a big part in how a space feels, the energy it radiates, and the style it conveys. Styling and decor in this design were always intended to be a bit more eclectic, so a calmer approach to the cabinet color was required. But neutral doesn't have to mean white.

'We were about to launch our new colors when the owners came in for their meeting, so she was one of the first people to have Quaker Cream. It works so nicely with the warm woods and blues,' recalls Megan Wright, Showroom Manager and Senior Kitchen Designer at deVOL Kitchens.

A warm cream hue, it's the perfect middle ground between white and butter yellow. But the thoughtful color choices didn't stop here. The ceiling is a true focal point, painted a glossy blue shade to add personality and architectural interest. It also gives the kitchen more structure, rather than large expanses of white surfaces.

Balance Functional Storage With Eclectic Style

Designing a kitchen requires a careful balance of functional storage and more decorative details that give a scheme personality and interest. In this space, where eclectic styling defined the brief, zoning the kitchen storage was the perfect way to strike that balance – starting with a pantry.

'The design includes a 900mm-wide, full-height pantry cupboard, which is a great way to pack a lot of storage into a space. We also included spice racks on the inside of both doors, a really practical way to add extra storage that's easy to sort through,' Megan explains of the more practical elements.

'The clients didn't feel like everything needed to be shut away behind doors, and I think wall cabinets in this design would make it feel too perfect,' she continues. 'The lovely oak shelf above the sink is practical, but it also adds a nice lightness to the space, a bit of breathing room. The brass hanging rail is also a great way to store pans and utensils. Everything is visible and easy to reach, which makes cooking very easy!'

Add Character and Texture With a More Rustic Kitchen Island

Creating a lived-in kitchen feel goes beyond a few decor pieces – it shows up in the bones of your design. Painted cabinetry in this scheme brings warmth, color and contrast, but the kitchen island adds a more rustic, characterful feature, with its slightly timeworn finish and vintage appeal.

'The clients were keen to source a prep table that brought in different colors and textures to the design,' Megan explains. 'They wanted the space to feel authentic and not too polished, and the worn paint finish next to the Shaker cabinets adds depth to the room. The open storage in the island is also perfect for a practical and hardworking kitchen.'

Let a Backsplash Double as a Mediterranean-Inspired Centerpiece

A kitchen backsplash is a functional feature first, but it can be a decorative one, too. Instead of leaning into kitchen backsplash trends with beige subway or white zellige, the clients were more interested in a bolder pattern that spoke to the overall palette of the room. It takes the design from classic to something more characterful.

Spanning the full run of cabinetry, white tiles with a delicate blue print in each corner create a more eclectic look, topped with more maximalist border tiles, featuring dark blue, yellow, and red, to pick up on the other tones throughout the space. 'These were the clients' choice,' Megan adds. 'They were keen for the space to feel eclectic, and these tiles speak to that.'

Leave Appliances On Display for a Less Polished Look

It's become common practice to integrate appliances, especially the refrigerator, to create a clean, seamless look. But sometimes, leaving them visible is key to a more informal, lived-in feel. Surrounded by cabinetry, the unintegrated stainless steel fridge-freezer was a more impactful choice than you might expect.

'The overall feel of the space is unpretentious and simple. The pots and pans are on display and easily reachable; it just made sense in this design to keep the fridge as it is and not try to hide it behind doors. The stainless-steel front also breaks up the furniture a little, which adds to the overall eclectic feel,' Megan explains.

The backsplash of 2027 is so much more than just a functional strip behind a countertop. A decade ago, this design detail was often perfunctory, but now it’s become a significant feature of the overall kitchen design, considered from the very beginning.

It isn’t just about making a ‘statement’, however – designers see the backsplash as an opportunity to enhance the character, craftsmanship and materiality of the space in a thoughtful way. We asked interior designers what their favorite backsplash treatments are for 2027, but also how and why they’ll work beautifully for years to come. These are the current, yet enduring backsplash trends they’re leaning towards for the year ahead…

1. Continuing the Countertop

In line with the quiet luxury kitchen trend, this look is all about allowing the backsplash to blend into the background rather than shouting ‘look at me’. Running the countertop up the wall to create a seamless continuation of stone not only looks chic, but it’s also visually restful, enhances the sense of space, and is a sophisticated solution for those who like their kitchens more pared back.

‘This backsplash look allows for more creative freedom with the cabinetry design and colorations,’ says Lisa Worth, founder of Worth Interior Design. ‘When the backsplash contrasts with the countertop, it can become the main focal point of the space, and then everything around it needs to take a back seat. While eclecticism in interiors remains very much on trend, it’s important to remember that the cabinetry is the star of the show.’

As the desire to incorporate the beauty of natural stone into our homes shows no signs of slowing, Lisa says that opting for a classic material in a timeless format like this is a win-win. ‘You can achieve a beautiful, considered look today while ensuring your kitchen continues to feel relevant for years to come,’ she says.

On a practical level, Lisa notes that with no grout lines, clean-up is much easier, and technological advances in stone-look materials mean you can get convincing stone-effect surfaces that require little-to-no maintenance.

2. Large Format Tiles

If huge slabs of stone are slightly out of your price range but you covet the look, large kitchen tiles could be the answer, and it’s one designers are reaching for more frequently for both practical and aesthetic reasons.

‘For modern, contemporary and high-function kitchens, I typically prefer to use the same stone for the backsplash as the countertop, but with the rising cost of fabrication, I'm gravitating toward large-format porcelain or natural stone tiles,’ reveals Ruchi A Mohan, founder of DesignbyRUCHI. Ruchi says tiles that come in 18x24 or 24x24 sizes work well with a typical backsplash height of 18"-24", with the only visible joinery being along the width of the splash.

‘The options available in large-scale porcelain tile have continuously been improving and increasing; minimal grout lines keep the look seamless, and the ease of maintenance is unmatched,’ adds Ruchi. While porcelain surfaces that mimic natural stone have been around for a while, more options are now available that look like mirrors, metals, travertine and quartzite.

‘Natural stone tiles available in large format sizes are also a great option for backsplashes, offering reduced material and application costs,’ adds Ruchi. ‘In my view, these are both viable, intentional, no-compromise solutions for very large kitchens where the actual material quantity required is high to start with; fabrication costs add to overall project costs. It's a smart use of budget with a unique mix of materials.’

'Longer term, the backsplash has a more visible impact on kitchen design than the stone itself. I love using a high-performance material like quartz for the countertop while featuring the backsplash to make the kitchen design forward-thinking. Budget is always real, be it during current times or in the future; materials that provide a solution to budget and increase design impact are always in trend.'

3. Artisanal Tiles

As homeowners seek out more personalised interiors, there’s still a whiff of nostalgia in the air for the backsplash trends of 2027 – designers are being tasked with creating more unique, one-off spaces that are layered with storytelling, heritage craftsmanship and designs that will last for generations to come.

‘Traditional tiled backsplashes are having a serious renaissance,’ says Gianpiero Gaglione, founder of Gianpiero Gaglione Interior Design. ‘Specifically, unique, handmade tiles that really showcase a certain level of craftsmanship, imperfection, and have an artistic quality to them. While a marble backsplash leans towards a more polished look, personally, what I'm seeing and hearing from my clients is that they prefer the warmth, character and hand-made quality that these artisanal tiles bring.’

Many brands are taking this on board, with the likes of Ca’ Pietra teaming up with heritage fabric powerhouse Sanderson to create an artisanal tile collection based on its iconic patterns. Similarly, Bert & May, known for its characterful tiles, has collaborated with print and pattern designer Chrisanna McArthur to reinterpret historic motifs with meticulously hand-painted designs that have a time-worn feel, celebrating craft, history and timeless design.

4. Top-to-Toe Metro

Subway tiles are an instant classic, providing an instant heritage feel that’s reminiscent of Victorian sculleries. ‘Fully tiled kitchen walls date back more than a century, and yet they continue to be a lovely and relevant design decision,’ says interior designer Jessica Helgerson. ‘In addition to their clearly functional value, they also eliminate the endless “Where to end the backsplash?” question, and depending on the tile used, can provide a beautiful wall surface.’

Using metro tiles in a classic cream or off-white adds a nostalgic feel, conjuring up a crisp and clean look that sits in line with the sanitation movement of the turn of the century. While previously designers might install subway tiles so they sit just under the wall cabinets to provide a functional backsplash, increasingly they’re adopting a wall-to-wall approach, with tiles going all the way to the ceiling and even cladding cooker hoods for a uniform look that’s sophisticated with just the right amount of visual impact.

‘My real inspiration for this look is the stunning kitchen at the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris,’ adds Jessica. ‘While this backsplash treatment obviously leans into a nostalgic look, it’s more about trying to recreate something that feels authentic to the house, so this is a design move we are more likely to do in a period property.’

The real bonus of this look is its timelessness and versatility – given their relative simplicity, subway tiles work in practically any kitchen and won’t date. It’s best not to be tempted into fancy or on-trend laying patterns, however; herringbone, for example, was a look that’s passed its peak, so sticking with a simple brick bond is best if you want to ensure its staying power.

5. Sculptural Designs

More and more, we’re seeing designers treating the backsplash as an architectural element rather than simply selecting an eye-catching material to protect the wall – it’s about creating something beautiful and reintroducing craftsmanship, similar to the rise in ogee detailing on countertop edges.

‘We're thinking about the backsplash almost like we would millwork: where should it start and stop, should it have a defined edge, can the shape echo something elsewhere in the room, or whether it can create a focal point around a sink or range,’ says Sary Em, partner and interior designer at Rework Architecture and Design.

According to Sary, this demand for sculptural detailing in 2027 is borne from a desire for spaces that have texture, personality, and pieces that feel handmade. ‘A backsplash doesn't have to be utilitarian – we want it to have the same level of thoughtfulness as a fireplace surround, a built-in, or a piece of furniture,’ she says.

The key to achieving this look is paying attention to how the backsplash relates to the architecture of the room. Sary says the sculpted backsplash should feel connected to something else in the space, whether it's the shape of a window, a cabinet detail, or an arch, so there’s a contextual link.

Ultimately, this is a timeless backsplash style that has the potential to outlast any trend as it’s based on authentic craftsmanship that works in any home – historic or contemporary – as long as it relates to its surroundings.

6. Small Format Tiles, But on a Big Scale

Backsplash feature walls have been around for a while, but instead of countertop-to-ceiling stone with statement veining, designers are reaching for a more pared-back, textured feel. ‘For 2027, we’re seeing a return to mosaic backsplashes that feel handcrafted, storied, and anything but mass-produced,’ says interior designer Christina Cruz. According to Christina, designers are gravitating toward smaller-scale patterns because they bring texture and character into the kitchen without overpowering the space.

‘We love pairing mosaic tiles with natural materials like marble, soapstone, warm woods and plaster – the contrast allows the backsplash to become a quiet layer of detail rather than the main event,’ she adds. ‘Consider a tonal mosaic with subtle variation, or use it selectively behind a range or within a niche where the craftsmanship can shine – this is what gives this look its staying power.’

Mosaics have been used for centuries, so while the application may feel fresh for 2027, the material itself is anything but trendy. ‘When rooted in natural materials and timeless craftsmanship, it only becomes more beautiful with age,’ says Christina.

Overall, it seems the best backsplashes for 2027 aren't the ones that shout the loudest – it’s the designs that feel quietly considered, relevant to the architecture and their surroundings, but also characterful and personal to the people living there. All of these trends are rooted in authenticity, whether that’s craftsmanship or heritage that pulls them together.

But in this Memphis kitchen, the design inspiration came from somewhere else entirely – the Southern folk tradition of tramp art became the leading influence for the millwork, creating a scheme that is equal parts unique and rooted in history, with a mix of old and new finds adding to that artfully collected style.

When it comes to kitchen walls, the material decisions usually sit somewhere between tile, paint, and paneling. But the most elevated designs embrace the unexpected – in the case of this kitchen, marble brick slips with a remarkably organic finish bring the walls to life, creating a backdrop for the moody colors used throughout the rest of the space.

'We clad the walls in these irregular tumbled marble brick slips and finished them with a thick, tonal grout line that allows the variation and imperfection of the brickwork to remain visible,' explains interior designer Sean Anderson. 'A conventional painted wall would have felt too flat against the scale and depth of the cabinetry. The brick gives the room an architectural history and catches the changing light throughout the day.'

Use Drawers and Freestanding Pieces To Create a More Furniture-Like Kitchen

Kitchens have become less utilitarian in appearance, instead becoming more multi-functional, lived-in, and with softer decor. The brief for this design embraced all of those ideals, and the cabinet design and furniture choices were key. 'The guiding idea was to create a kitchen that felt less like a conventional fitted kitchen and more like a room that had evolved over time,' Sean explains.

'I was drawn to the honesty and permanence of old working kitchens, where practical elements coexist with beautiful furniture, art, and collected objects. The millwork concept was rooted in my desire to create a kitchen that incorporated tramp art as the main trim profile. I think the story behind tramp art lends authenticity to what I aimed to create in this kitchen and throughout the home.'

This more collected, lived-in approach begins with the kitchen cabinetry, which was designed to look more like furniture. 'With the drawers and repeated brass cup pulls, the cabinetry came to feel like an old apothecary or worktable, rather than a standard run of kitchen cabinets,' he notes. 'There’s also the bonus of drawers being much easier and more functional than cabinets, in my opinion.'

Disguise Large Appliances Behind Beautiful Millwork

Creating a more furniture-like kitchen requires a thoughtful approach to appliances – in other words, integrating them so they don't become a utilitarian eyesore. A shiny stainless steel refrigerator and freezer would have disrupted the evolved, collected look Sean was aiming for, so hiding them behind beautiful millwork offered an elegant solution.

'The two tall cabinetry elements contain the kitchen’s dual fridges and freezers (a must for our clients), allowing those practical necessities to recede into the architecture,' he explains. 'Their placement at either side of the room creates a sense of symmetry and gives the kitchen clear visual boundaries. We again treated them almost as freestanding pieces of furniture, with deeply recessed panels, substantial cornices, and the tramp style moldings, so their scale feels intentional rather than imposing.'

Layer Social Zones To Take the Kitchen Beyond Function

One of the most eye-catching details in this kitchen is the layering of zones – the main working kitchen sits at the far end of the room, complete with a spacious island. Yet beyond are two distinct seating areas – one a luxurious dining space, the other a cozier living space with upholstered armchairs and a coffee table that invites you to sit and enjoy the room.

The design's success begins with an artful mix of furniture styles. 'I never want a room to feel as though everything was conceived and purchased at the same moment,' he explains. 'Everything speaks a slightly different language, but it’s all connected through material, tone, and texture. That tension gives the space its character. It feels collected, personal, and capable of continuing to evolve with the people who live there.'

The lounge-style seating not only gives the room a more lived-in feel, but invites you to linger long after the cooking is complete. 'The kitchen is generous in scale, and I wanted to use that space to create another way of inhabiting the room. The lounge chairs provide a relaxed place to sit with a drink, read, or speak with whoever is cooking without having to perch at the island or formally gather around the dining table. They also soften the transition between the working kitchen and dining area.'

Mix Decor Styles For a Truly Collected Design

There's an art to kitchen decor – especially if you're trying to emulate the layered, collected style this design executes so well. There are a few reasons the finishing details feel so effortless here, starting with the mixed metal hardware and lighting. 'Using a single metal throughout would have made the kitchen feel overly coordinated,' Sean explains.

'The copper pendants bring warmth and act almost as sculptural objects, while aged brass hardware adds a quieter, timeworn quality. Stainless steel and blackened metal belong naturally to the working elements of the kitchen. Together, the finishes create depth and reinforce the sense that the room has been assembled gradually rather than installed all at once.'

Softness and charm come through the decorative details. 'The vintage rugs, varied accessories, lamps, and textiles introduce softness, age, and evidence of the hand. The rugs also help define the different zones and temper the harder surfaces acoustically and visually,' he continues. 'Nothing was selected merely to decorate the kitchen; each piece contributes to the feeling that this is a lived-in room. Their imperfect finishes and muted colors prevent the architecture and cabinetry from feeling too new or too formal.'

Here, Amber Lewis, Founder of Amber Interiors, shares her predictions for what the most coveted kitchens will look like as we head towards 2027, and how you can create a scheme that effortlessly blends timeless style with personalized design.

No other room has evolved as much as the kitchen in recent years. It's gone from a solely functional cooking space to a more livable room, blending cooking with dining, relaxing, and day-to-day life. Softer textures, warmer finishes, and an emphasis on personalized decor have all become paramount, and it's a design ethos Amber says will continue next year and beyond.

'I'm leaning into a more classic, lived-in kitchen these days – warm, filled with natural light, and designed for actual use,' she explains, a decorating approach that's become the antidote to the 'showroom-perfect' kitchens of past trends. 'We spent so many years chasing that crisp, clean, all-white kitchen, and now there's an appetite for a little soul – patina, texture, and colors that have some depth to them. The kitchen is where your whole life happens, so it makes sense that people want it to feel like them, not like a catalog spread.'

Functionality is still important, so Amber suggests choosing materials that create that lived-in look to strike a balance. While it can be tempting to lean into trending designs, keeping the larger investment pieces classic ensures a timeless space.

'For countertops, I'm loving utilitarian materials that only get better with age: Carrara marble that develops a beautiful patina, soapstone that can withstand everyday use, and butcher block that beautifully shows wear and age. Nothing too precious, just materials that are functional but beautiful,' she describes.

Texture, personality, and playful style come through in the smaller details – and Amber expects more daring kitchen hardware designs to be at the forefront. 'I'm also mixing finishes: polished bright nickel alongside unlacquered brass left to age naturally, plus tiled range hoods and backsplashes that highlight craftsmanship and add texture.'

Much like the countertops, kitchen cabinet ideas are following the warm, natural, textured route, with mushroom hues, taupes, and wood tones prevailing into 2027, creating a timeless base for those playful tile and hardware moments. 'Pair that with cabinetry in warm natural woods and creamy taupe tones, and you've got the kind of kitchen you want to gather in,' Amber advises. 'Traditional, warm, and a little undone in the best way.'

Kitchen designs are becoming more intentional, with a clear focus on sustainable practices – classic styles and quality materials ensure a kitchen lasts for years, both aesthetically and practically, while bolder statements through smaller details bring the fun and personality. It's about striking the right balance, and knowing where to stick to classics and where to take a risk.

'The key is choosing materials and finishes that will age and patina beautifully over time,' she continues. 'Focus on building that strong foundation – quality cabinetry, natural materials, custom details – and then layer in your personality and trendier elements over time as it makes sense. Things like hardware, lighting, paint colors, and styling can be updated easily without a major remodel.'

Kitchens have evolved far beyond a simple cooking space. They're now designed to include a place to dine and cozier seating areas to relax and unwind, essentially combining the kitchen, dining room, and lounge into one multifunctional room.

It's why the kitchen is widely considered the heart of the home – and designed with that ethos in mind. This approach has only gone further in recent years, with some of the most on-trend kitchens looking less like kitchens and more like living rooms. And some designers do believe it's gone too far; the kitchen has become too multifunctional, too soft, too lived-in.

So, should your kitchen become this room-for-everything space? Or should we look to return the cooking space to, well, a place to cook? We've asked designers to settle the debate – turns out, they're divided, too.

The kitchen as the heart of the home is not a new concept. Turn back the clocks a century or three, and the saying still rings true. Except back then, it referred to the single-room home most regular people would occupy, with a roaring fire providing heat and a place to cook. It was a practical decision, not an aesthetic one.

But is the essence of these spaces still the same today? For Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon, the design duo behind The Brownstone Boys, that question can't be answered without first acknowledging that what it means to be the heart of the home has fundamentally changed compared to what it was in the past.

'Historically, especially in the old homes we work on, kitchens were tucked away and designed almost entirely for function,' they explain. 'Today, they’re where so much of life happens. You cook there, yes, but you also have your morning coffee, kids do homework at the island, friends gather around while you’re making dinner, and everyone inevitably ends up there during a party.'

Now that kitchens have become a hub for everyday life, where living, hosting, and day-to-day tasks are carried out, it's been recentered as the heart of the home. It's become more social, and the decor infinitely softer, so spending time in these rooms has grown in appeal and comfort. And for many designers, that's reason enough to declare the kitchen the firm centerpiece.

'The kitchen is, in my view, unquestionably one of the central hubs of the home. It's where families start the day and, more often than not, where they end it too – gathered around a counter or table. Even at a dinner party, guests gravitate toward whoever's at the stove, whether the host planned it that way or not. That's simply how a kitchen works,' says interior designer Katie Harbison.

'That instinct matters, because the alternative is worse than it sounds. A host confined to the kitchen – physically cut off from the room where everyone else has gathered – stops being part of the evening. Cooking becomes a task performed in isolation rather than an extension of the hosting itself, and the atmosphere carries on without them. The same is true day to day – a kitchen that separates the person cooking from the people they're cooking for turns a shared moment into a chore.'

As kitchens have moved from awkward extensions at the back of the house and grown in scale, they've naturally become a gathering point. It's less about forcing a design, and more about responding to how people naturally use kitchens for a variety of tasks and needs. No matter the size or location of the kitchen, people seem to gravitate toward it.

'It doesn't matter how large the home is or how many incredible spaces we design into it – home theaters, oversized family rooms, dreamy primary suites with the comfiest beds – life still happens in the kitchen,' adds Rayana Schmitz of Firefinish Interiors. 'It's where the day actually unfolds: coffee in the morning, homework at the island, wine while someone cooks dinner. No other room pulls double duty quite like it, which is exactly why it's still the most requested space in nearly every project I take on.'

Yet not everyone shares their sentiment. For designer Bryan Graybill, the kitchen has evolved a step too far, and its true purpose and function have become lost in translation. In his recent column for Homes & Gardens he talks about the need for a 'proper kitchen'. 'For me, the kitchen is fundamentally a working room,' he responds, explaining that while kitchens should be 'beautiful and domestic' rooms, they still need to be functional first and foremost, rather than 'become the place where everyone congregates.'

'I think we’ve asked the kitchen to do too much,' he continues. 'The large kitchen island has become almost shorthand for luxury, when often it’s really just an enormous object everyone has to walk around. I’d rather have a proper work table, something that feels like furniture and can evolve over time, and then allow some of the kitchen functions to migrate into a larder or scullery. It makes the kitchen quieter visually and more pleasant to actually cook in.'

He's not the only one who feels that the oversized kitchen island has confused the purpose of a kitchen. 'We’ve started pushing back against the idea that the kitchen needs to do everything,' Jordan and Barry admit. 'Not every kitchen needs an enormous island with six stools that becomes the dining room, homework station, home office and cocktail bar. Sometimes giving those activities their own spaces actually makes a home work better.'

So if the kitchen isn't the heart of the home, what is the alternative? It's all about compromise, and letting the rooms you naturally want to spend the most time in become the hub, rather than forcing the kitchen to be this multifunctional space just because it's on trend right now.

'If there is a heart of the home, I’d probably argue that it’s the room where people are most comfortable doing absolutely nothing. Usually that’s the sitting room. A fire, a comfortable chair, a dog asleep somewhere, a drink on a table. The kitchen nourishes you, but the sitting room is where you actually live,' Bryan explains. But it doesn't have to be a singular room, either.

'I’m much more interested in a house having several centers of gravity,' he adds. 'The kitchen can be one of them, particularly in the morning. But then perhaps the garden becomes the center in the afternoon, the bar at cocktail hour, and the sitting room after dinner. A good house should encourage people to move through it. Rooms should have different purposes and different moments in the day.'

The idea of having more than one space that becomes a hub also appeals to Jordan and Barry, who design spaces that respond to how clients live day-to-day rather than 'to dictate where people should gather.' In many cases, this means multiple rooms play a part. 'Some of our favorite homes have several little hearts rather than one giant central hub,' they explain. 'There’s something really lovely about moving through a home and having different rooms draw you in at different moments of the day.'

The greatest appeal is that the plethora of requirements no longer falls entirely on the kitchen, which, in some cases, designers feel has become overwhelmed with too many jobs, some of which hinder productivity. Having more than one 'heart room' depending on the function feels more natural, and means the kitchen can bring back some of the more functional qualities that have become buried.

'I’m less interested in assigning a room a role than designing around the way people naturally use it. If you're a major cook or entertainer or want to multitask in the kitchen, then make it the heart of the home. But that's not a hard and fast rule if it's not a place you spend much time,' interior designer Zoë Feldman suggests. The real heart of the home? 'Whatever room you gravitate toward most. That could be the family room, the library, or any space devoted simply to being together.'

The truth is, every home is different. The kitchen might be the perfect social hotspot in one home, but the complete opposite in another. The key is understanding your home's flow and how you live in it – there's a fine line between a kitchen being the heart of the home and becoming the epicenter of chaos.

We couldn't talk about warm kitchen colors without bringing brown into the equation. This rich, moody hue acts as a dark neutral, and while it's most synonymous with fall, it feels chic in every season and pairs beautifully with classic kitchen materials like marble, wood, and brass.

It's one of the most versatile palettes, too. You can introduce brown through your kitchen cabinetry in paint colors (Broccoli Brown by Farrow & Ball and Tudor Brown by Benjamin Moore work beautifully for brown kitchens) or wood stains, as well as cozier zones like seat cushions and pillows on a kitchen banquette, or via the upholstery on bar stools.

In designer Jess Cooney's kitchen, brown hues show up throughout, from the dark wood cabinets to the upholstery present in the dining nook. It adds warmth, richness, and a sort of classic style that's hard to achieve with paler tones.

2. Soft Yellow Shades

Warm colors come in many shades and tonal variations, but if there's one hue that radiates warmth in a kitchen, it's soft, almost muted shades of yellow. It's a color that transitions seamlessly through the seasons, and depending on the color pairings, a yellow kitchen can read earthy or more neutral-adjacent.

'It’s such a warm, sunny color and instantly lifts the spirits. I particularly love the more earthy, ochre yellows as they have a softness to them and are incredibly easy to live with. Yellow naturally brings a sense of sunshine into a room, so even deeper, muddier shades still have this wonderful luminosity. It adds warmth without making the space feel heavy and works particularly well in kitchens because it feels so cheerful and welcoming,' says interior designer Uns Hobbs.

'If you’re nervous about color drenching an entire kitchen in yellow, introduce a contrasting color on the island. In this kitchen, I paired the yellow cabinetry with a deep aubergine island, which grounds the scheme and gives the room more depth. Keeping the countertops and walls pale also allows the yellow to really sing without overwhelming the space.'

3. Classic Wood Tones

If you want to combine warm color with timeless style, wooden kitchen ideas tick both boxes. Particularly with natural and darker finishes, the grain and surface variations bring texture and richness without committing to a solid paint color.

'I love bringing in wood tones to make a kitchen feel warm and inviting. We introduce wood in a variety of ways – through stained tongue-and-groove ceiling treatments, a wood-stained kitchen island, or even through cabinetry,' says interior designer Anne Pappas.

Wooden kitchens have a reputation for being better suited to more traditional schemes, but it's a material that works just as stylishly in modern design. 'I think there are so many ways that wood tones can look modern – we love white oak for cabinets, Cypress (which is indigenous to our coastal region) and Mahogany for kitchen islands.'

4. Deep Red Hues

The autumn months always imbue that warm, cozy aesthetic, so looking for fall colors is always a charming source of inspiration. And one such hue has been proving a timeless choice in kitchens lately. 'Deep red is another favorite of mine for kitchens. It creates a much cozier, richer feel and works beautifully if you want something a little more cocooning,' says Uns.

'Used thoughtfully, deeper shades such as burgundy can make a kitchen feel cozier without making it feel smaller. It’s about balancing the color with natural light, coordinating materials and the surrounding palette,' adds paint expert Dominic Myland. Burgundy kitchens are proving the most popular of the color family, but deep reds include rich aubergines and muddy oxblood hues.

The beauty of deep reds is that they are timeless, classic, and pair beautifully with materials from marble to soapstone. The color pairings you can create with deep reds are surprisingly versatile, from warm neutrals and soft pinks for a lighter space to bold yellow for a more maximalist kitchen.

There are a few ways to decorate with this palette. A warm, earthy neutral on the cabinets adds depth, while lighter walls add subtle contrast and a light-enhancing finish. Alternatively, a dark cabinet color, whether it's a rich brown or soft green, is highlighted by a warm neutral color on the walls. 'Green is a perfect color choice when you want to avoid a true neutral or wood tone. Pulling colors from nature is an assured way to create a kitchen that feels warm, inviting, and timeless,' says interior designer Kristen Pena. 'You have to be mindful of tone, especially with green in a kitchen. It’s all about tone, saturation, and your materiality.'

'Painted cabinetry is the first place we suggest adding these colors,' Anna adds. 'From there, we layer warmth in through countertop stone and backsplash selections, since those are the next-largest visual real estate in a kitchen. The common thread here is scale: cabinets, counters, and backsplash all take up enough visual space that committing there makes a real impact.'

7. Deep Charcoals With Warm Undertones

Charcoal and black paints may sound bold for a kitchen color, but when you choose the right shades (and undertones), the result is surprisingly alluring. 'We often gravitate towards darker, more atmospheric colors,' says Nick Cryer, Founder of Berkeley Place, who says seeking out shades with brown or red undertones, rather than blue, is the secret to these more daring, dramatic colors.

Decorating with darker colors relies on warm undertones to ensure your kitchen feels inviting, rather than cold. 'These are colors with real tonal depth, which respond beautifully to changing natural and artificial light. We return to them particularly in period kitchens, including rooms people often assume are too dark to carry a strong color: lower-ground floors, single-aspect rooms or spaces with limited natural light.'

In this kitchen, the dark charcoal palette works for two reasons: warm undertones and a large window that fills the kitchen with natural light, so it never feels dark or uninviting. 'Color is never static; much like pigment in a painting, its character is determined by the light around it,' Nick notes. 'A charcoal with warm undertones responds particularly well to afternoon sun and warmer artificial light, revealing subtle brown and red notes as the light changes.'

When you think of the most iconic movie homes, Nancy Meyers’ layered, cozy, and deeply nostalgic interiors probably come to mind. So it’s perhaps no surprise that growing up with a mother who created some of the most beloved spaces on screen would inspire a love of interiors of your own.

But Annie Meyers-Shyer has carved out a name for herself in the design world well beyond being the filmmaker’s daughter. She has built a devoted following around the renovation of her historic Los Angeles home – a project that has now become the subject of her debut book, chronicling the transformation from start to finish. At the heart of the home is a spacious kitchen designed to feel as though it has always belonged there.

Here, Annie takes us inside the kitchen remodel, sharing how she created a kitchen that feels true to the character of the historic property while balancing timeless design with the realities of modern family life.

The Inspiration

The renovation reimagined the kitchen as a much larger, more family-oriented room, balancing timeless style with functional details. Rather than serving purely as a cooking space, Annie wanted to add areas to sit, relax, and spend quality time, which was reflected in the initial brief for the new design.

'The biggest goal was to make the kitchen feel as though it had always been part of the house. Originally, it was much smaller, so as we expanded it to include a family room on one end and a breakfast room on the other, it was really important that everything felt cohesive,' she explains.

'We took our cues from the millwork and architecture found throughout the rest of the house and designed the kitchen to feel completely in keeping with its original character. I never wanted someone to walk in and immediately think, Oh, this is the new addition.'

The Color and Material Palette

The kitchen color and material palette was an important part of the redesign, setting the tone and style for the room – including the ceiling, which now features a high-gloss finish to bounce light and add dimension. With a large bay window at one end of the enlarged kitchen, sticking to a neutral palette kept the space open, airy, and bright.

'I always knew the family room and breakfast room would have white walls, and every time we experimented with another color in the kitchen, it broke up the flow between the spaces. Keeping everything white made the entire area feel connected and much larger. White also lets the architecture, natural light, and textures take center stage. It's calming, timeless, and gives me a beautiful neutral backdrop for flowers, food, all the things!'

Timeless style was considered throughout the redesign, evident through the materials chosen in the kitchen. From the natural wood tones in various areas of the space to the mix of aged finishes that give the hardware a sense of history, every detail benefited from meticulous attention to detail.

'Every faucet in the house is polished nickel. It's my favorite finish because it's timeless and incredibly forgiving. For the door and cabinet hardware, I chose oil-rubbed bronze. Rather than making everything match perfectly, I like having a few finishes that complement one another. It creates depth and makes the house feel as though it evolved over time, instead of being installed all at once. Limiting yourself to just a couple of finishes also helps everything feel intentional and cohesive.'

The Island

The kitchen island is the true centerpiece, designed to accommodate plenty of counter seating and ample prep space to keep the kitchen functional. It's no surprise that when asked about the standout feature, Annie immediately highlighted the island.

'At 12 feet long, it's the heart of the kitchen and where everyone naturally gathers. I was very intentional about including seating for five. We may only be a family of four, but I always wanted room for a friend to join us because that's how our house functions. It's where homework happens, conversations happen, and everyone inevitably ends up.'

'A large island can easily feel like one giant block sitting in the middle of a room, and I really wanted to avoid that. The open shelving lightens the visual weight and makes the island feel more like a beautiful piece of furniture than just cabinetry. I use it for cookbooks, baskets, serving pieces, and objects I actually love using. It's functional, but it also gives the island personality.'

The Details

It's the details that take a white kitchen to the next level – they make a scheme feel layered, personalized, and beautifully stylized. To balance decorative features and functionality, Annie used materiality to bring warmth and character to the design, starting with the banquette seating and the charming decor that elevated it.

'I have woven matchstick shades on many of the windows throughout the house because they instantly add warmth and texture without making a room feel heavy. They filter light beautifully. I'm naturally drawn to rattan, wicker, and other natural fibers. That said, I'm careful not to overdo it. Repeating natural materials throughout a home creates continuity, but using them thoughtfully keeps each room feeling special.'

'The banquette was actually my husband's idea from the very beginning. He envisioned our family gathering there, and it's become exactly that. We eat there almost every day, the kids do homework there, and sometimes we'll watch a game or a show together while we're eating. It's become one of the most used spots in the house. It's not the easiest thing to climb in and out of, but that's a trade-off I'd happily make because it's created such a cozy place for our family to spend time together.'

The project has been a labor of love – and it's every element of the kitchen combined that makes it feel special. 'One of my favorite compliments came from my mother-in-law, who previously owned the house. She recently asked me how much we had raised the kitchen ceiling – we didn't raise it at all. It's still an eight-foot ceiling, but I think the proportions, cabinetry, and overall design make it feel much taller. To me, that was the ultimate compliment because it meant the space felt transformed without losing its original character.'

'Mushroom colors are definitely having a moment right now, but I actually think they’ve been around for a while,' adds interior designer Alexa Kingery. 'The beautiful part of using an earthy-mushroom tone is that it’s rooted in nature, and nature never goes out of style. Mushroom colors can vary from a soft, creamy, light beige to a muddy taupe or brown.'

'I think people are still recovering from the modern farmhouse epidemic where everything is harsh black hardware on stark white cabinets. Don’t get me wrong, at Alexa Kingery Interiors we still love a beautiful farmhouse aesthetic – we’re just doing it in much softer tones,' says Alexa.

'Overall, we are seeing people lean towards bringing warmer hues into their homes. Mushroom paint colors can be a great color palette staple,' Arianna agrees. 'For kitchens, in particular, people are no longer defaulting to white. Off-whites will always be a timeless choice for a kitchen, but this space also offers a great opportunity to bring in other hues, whether that is on the cabinets or walls.'

It's also a great palette if you want to bring warmth to your cooking space without leaning fully into the deeper browns that are proving popular. It's a neutral option that bridges the gap between pure whites and moodier tones, so it doesn't feel too different from the pared-back colors people are comfortable decorating with.

'People are definitely gravitating toward warmer, earthier palettes right now; going fully brown can feel a bit heavy or inadvertently lean into a retro 1970s look. Mushroom offers the perfect middle ground. It feels more intentional and characterful than falling back on a standard white or stark greige, providing a sophisticated warmth without overwhelming the space,' interior designer Pernille Lind explains.

In many ways, the appeal of mushroom kitchen colors reverts to nature as inspiration for our interiors, with shades that balance depth and interest with soft, timeless design. They feel layered yet still neutral, warmer yet not overwhelming. And their impact on a room, especially a kitchen where different finishes and materials come together, can't be ignored.

'When you use softer colors rooted in nature, it tends to make a room feel cozier, more inviting, and honestly… timeless. I truly think ever since the pandemic, people are simply craving comfort,' Alexa notes. 'In today’s economic and political climate, life can be hard enough. So instead of the cold and lifeless black and white, people are reintroducing beauty, color, and life back into their homes!'

How To Bring Mushroom Hues Into Your Kitchen

These warm neutrals are surprisingly easy to decorate with, especially in a kitchen. For a truly classic design, you can't go wrong with cabinets painted in mushroom hues with classic marble countertops – it's an elevated duo that never dates.

'One of our favourite colors for a kitchen, it seems to work wherever it goes, soft and warm yet light enough for even the darkest of corners,' says Helen Parker, Creative Director of deVOL Kitchens. 'The classic combination of Carrara marble and mushroom paint is always perfect. It's almost a deVOL look in itself and has graced hundreds of our most coveted rooms.'

If you've gone for a deeper kitchen cabinet color, this warm neutral on the walls creates a subtle background. 'Consider lighter mushroom paint colors for the walls to pair with darker kitchen cabinets. They can help soften and brighten the kitchen if you choose a bolder cabinet color,' Arianna suggests.

It's a color palette that works beautifully alongside wooden kitchens, too, bringing out the warmth while providing a soft contrast. 'My tried-and-true way to incorporate mushroom colors into a kitchen is by using Accessible Beige by Sherwin-Williams alongside a rich medium-brown stained wood species,' says Alexa. A pantry is a hardworking kitchen feature, whether it's a walk-in design or a freestanding cabinet within the main cooking space. It creates a dedicated space for food storage and helps to keep your entire kitchen more organized.

It's easy to get carried away with the more aesthetic decisions, but the primary function of your pantry ideas is to create practical, usable storage – without that, even the most stylish pantry becomes another clutter zone.

The most successful designs balance style and practicality, and interior designers notice a few common pantry design mistakes that disrupt that balance. Here are the mistakes to avoid, and how you can fix them if they sound a bit too familiar.

1. Not Considering How You Need the Space to Function

The Mistake

A pantry design is only successful if it functions the way you need it to. Part of that is understanding how you live and use the space, but also whether you actually need a pantry, or whether your requirements are more aligned with a back kitchen. Start by noting the difference between a larder, pantry, and back kitchen, and which would add the most to your cooking space.

'There is currently a real trend for creating a back-of-house kitchen space, but we think this can sometimes muddy the purpose of the pantry. It needs to be designed either as a really good storage cupboard, or the space should be thought of more as a true back-of-house kitchen,' says Sophie Pringle, Founder of Pringle & Pringle.

'We are increasingly asked for a ‘pantry’ when what is really wanted is a back kitchen – somewhere to prepare food, house appliances, wash up and deal with the mess and overflow that comes with entertaining,' Anthony Earle, Creative Director at Artichoke, agrees. 'Trying to fit all of those functions into a small pantry can quickly make the room hot, cramped and rather impractical.'

The Fix

Before you start designing your pantry, determine how the space needs to function. If food storage is the priority, a pantry is the ideal solution, but if you want space for an extra sink, prep space, and large appliances, you'll need to plan for a larger back kitchen type of space.

If your needs align with a pantry, consider what you want to store and how you want to store it. Some items will need to be easily accessible, so storing them on open shelves within easy view will make day-to-day tasks more efficient.

'Think about the function first and design the space around how it will actually be used. Consider what you need to store, whether you want to hide small appliances, and how often you’ll be accessing the space, then make sure the layout, shelving and services are designed accordingly,' Sophie suggests.

2. Forgetting About Good Ventilation

The Mistake

A pantry is fundamentally a food storage solution, so airflow and maintaining conditions that keep food dry and fresh are really important. This isn't a storage closet, so don't treat it as such. Lack of ventilation encourages moisture build-up, which can cause food to go off (stagnant air becomes a breeding ground for mold), and can increase temperatures, leading to odors and stale food.

The Fix

The simplest fix is to add ventilation during the design process, whether it's wall vents or cutouts in your pantry doors to improve airflow. And location is key. 'Ideally, a really good pantry should also be positioned on an external wall, allowing for ventilation, particularly if it’s being used for food storage,' Sophie explains.

'Good airflow helps to keep the space cool and dry, which is important for storing food, and it is much easier to incorporate at the planning stage than to retrofit later. Ultimately, the pantry should be designed around function first, with the aesthetic details following from that.'

3. Choosing Quantity Over Quality of Storage

The Mistake

A pantry is a functional zone that should enhance a kitchen's flow and function, but successful storage is more about quality than quantity. Cramming in too many large shelves and hard-to-access cabinets will make finding and accessing the ingredients you need feel almost impossible.

'A common pantry design mistake, particularly in hard-working family kitchens where storage space is at a premium, is focusing exclusively on maximising the quantity of storage without thinking through the quality and types of storage that are going to both work well and look beautiful,' says Elizabeth Macfarlane of Macfarlane van der Heul

The Fix

Take the time to plan your pantry layout and the storage styles that make the most sense at each level. If you want to maximize height, you need to make sure you can actually reach the top shelves, so add a rolling ladder or fold-down step (this 3 Step Foldable Ladder from Amazon can be easily stashed away) to prevent baskets filled with ingredients you forget about and leave to go bad.

Take stock of what you need to access most regularly, and what you use only occasionally (such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or seasonal supplies) so you can prioritize the most accessible areas. Cereal, pasta, flour, and snacks – the food you reach for every day – should be stored at eye level so it's easy to grab. 4. Making Pantry Shelves Too Deep

The Mistake

Pantry shelving is one of the most practical storage types, but deep shelves quickly become almost impossible to access. 'Deep, evenly spaced shelves may look efficient on paper, but they often create wasted space and make it difficult to see what is stored behind the first row of items. Things inevitably get pushed to the back and forgotten,' says interior designer Vanessa Katzen.

'Avoid overly deep upper shelves, as it gets very hard to see what is on them,' adds George Miller, Designer at Neptune. Reaching the back of the shelves becomes difficult, and you inevitably end up knocking the items at the front, causing nothing but chaos and more mess.

The Fix

Plan pantry shelving around the items you need to store on them, rather than the other way around. 'I prefer to design pantry storage in layers, with shallower shelving for everyday items and deeper storage reserved for larger appliances, serving pieces and bulk goods,' says Vanessa.

'Incorporating drawers or pull-outs at lower levels also makes the full depth much more accessible. I also vary shelf heights rather than spacing everything uniformly. The goal is not simply to fit as much as possible into the pantry, but to make everything easy to see, reach, and put away. When storage is designed around how you actually use it, you often need less space than you think.'

5. Adding Too Many Cabinet Doors

The Mistake

Your pantry isn't a kitchen, so the pros and cons of open shelving don't apply in the same way. A pantry is function first, and filling these small spaces with lots of cabinets makes accessibility difficult – trying to open different cabinet doors will not only make it tricky to find what you need, but it instantly intrudes on the small amount of walkway you have.

'The point of a pantry is to maximize function and storage for your kitchen in a hidden but easily accessible space. It's supposed to be hardworking, not make you work harder,' says Leah Hook, Founder and Principal Designer at Gray Oak Studio. 'You don't want to walk from your kitchen to a separate room and then have to open another series of doors or drawers to get what you need.'

The Fix

Open shelving at floor level can feel messy and a bit inconvenient, so it makes sense to add some closed storage. Consider what you want to store here – drawers maximize a deep space, allowing you to access items stored towards the back.

'A combination of drawers and open shelving can work really well, so that the things you use most are easy to reach and you can actually see what you have. I also like to keep some of the prettier everyday items on display rather than hiding absolutely everything away. And don’t be afraid to decorate it,' says interior designer Laura Stephens.

If you're storing additional appliances you don't use regularly or seasonal accessories, cabinetry probably makes more sense. But instead of filling your pantry with doors, swap them with a cabinet skirt – Lulu & Georgia's Painterly Stripe Linen fabric is a great option, or for a ready-to-hand design, try Etsy's Striped Cotton Cabinet Skirt. 6. Excluding Useable Countertop Space

The Mistake

Pantry designs often focus on storage – as they should. But with so much attention on shelving, drawers, and cabinets, it's easy to forget that a countertop has a use in these spaces, too. 'A pantry without counters is storage without further utility,' Leah explains.

'You want a landing surface to organize your equipment or food and stage your plans, especially during messy kitchen activities. When you pull down the bin of flour, you want a place to put it within arm's reach. You don't want to go back and forth to the kitchen counter when you need to place something down.'

The Fix

The fix is simple – add a countertop, even if it's just a small run along the shortest wall. 'We always encourage clients to design in a generous counter, which gives the pantry an invaluable working surface for unpacking groceries or preparing food,' Anthony says.

It's a detail that turns a simple storage space into a functional pantry. You can bring in the same materials and palette as the kitchen for continuity, or use it as an opportunity to add a different material that didn't make it into your main kitchen design. 'Whether you choose butcher block, stone, stainless steel, or tile, 24" deep countertops at waist height are critical to the overall use of the room,' Leah adds.

7. Overlooking Pantry Lighting

The Mistake

You can spend hours meticulously planning custom storage and a beautiful color scheme, but if you ignore pantry lighting, you won't be able to see any of it. Relying on a single overhead light casts shadows and fails to illuminate your actual storage.

'Make sure you consider lighting – shelves create a lot of shadows from a single overhead pendant and make it hard to see what is on them,' says George. Plus, a badly lit room instantly feels uninviting – a pantry becomes pointless if you don't want to enter it.

The Fix

Approach it like you would your kitchen lighting. An overhead light is fine, but layer it with lower-level lighting designed for each storage area. 'LED strip lighting can help you have light exactly where you need it,' says George. 'We like to layer the lighting in a pantry the way we would in any other room,' says Elizabeth. 'One of the biggest mistakes is treating the pantry as purely functional and forgetting that it is still part of your home. It’s very easy to fill a pantry with shelves and cupboards and end up with a rather cold, utilitarian space, when it can be a lovely opportunity to introduce color and personality,' says Laura.

The Fix

There are different routes you can take with your pantry design depending on how it reads with the rest of your kitchen scheme – choose a warm neutral color and let texture do the talking, such as wall paneling or decorative millwork. Alternatively, you can color-drench your pantry in a deeper hue as a small confidence zone in the corner of a more neutral kitchen. Try to keep it simple and avoid using too many different colors and patterns – the storage still needs to be easily seen.

'A pantry is a wonderful place to have a little fun with color because it’s often a smaller, more enclosed space. Beautiful joinery, a lovely paint color, and good lighting can make it feel like a considered room rather than an afterthought. The practical elements still need to work, of course, but there’s no reason a pantry can’t have the same sense of character and joy as the rest of the house,' says Laura.

9. Choosing Bold Design Over Function

The Mistake

Following on from color, too many busy patterns or different colors can make a small pantry feel chaotic. 'There is so much color going on with food, spices and herbs that this space is the most important for a well-considered color scheme. It can quickly feel busy and cluttered, so take your time. Don’t rush this area,' says Katherine Channell, Founder and Head Designer at Katherine Jane Design Studio.

The same applies to tiles – on the walls and floors. 'A pantry is one of those spaces where people can be tempted to over-design the floor because the footprint is small. A highly patterned tile, a contrasting border and a completely different material can all sound appealing in isolation, but combined with shelving, cabinetry, jars, bottles and all the visual activity of a working pantry, the room can very quickly become busy,' adds Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra.

The Fix

The easiest way to fix this pantry design mistake is to take a more pared-back approach. In a tiny space, avoid pattern altogether, but in a pantry that can handle it, keep the colors and patterns tonal so it feels calm and considered. 'My solution would be to come up with three or four colors max,' Katherine suggests. 'I love using warm tones for this area, accessorising with wood and then often a pop of color. This allows you to bring in wicker baskets, which are functional and beautiful.'

For the floors, take a more subtle approach. 'If the pantry sits directly off the kitchen, continuing the same material through both spaces is particularly effective,' says Grazzie. 'It makes the architecture feel calmer and more intentional, and it allows the pantry to feel like part of the kitchen rather than somewhere that has been decorated afterwards.'

10. Forgetting to Plan Electrical Outlets

The Mistake

A pantry has evolved from being a simple food storage space to a more functional food prep zone. For many people, this includes housing small appliances and often using them within the pantry to avoid cluttering kitchen surfaces. And forgetting to include electrical outlets will become an issue down the line – even if it's just to charge up cordless devices or plug in additional lighting.

The Fix

During the design process, when you're planning out where different storage needs to be located, plan for electrics. Ideally, one above the countertops within easy access, and another hidden within closed storage if required. Try to take an elevated appraoch – outlet switches make a difference, so choose stylish designs that fit into your scheme. Large, sprawling kitchens are often seen as the pillar of inspiration for a dream kitchen, but there's something truly special about a beautifully designed small space. With the right color and layout choices, these compact schemes create a sense of intimacy, coziness, and elevated style.

That was the brief for this New York brownstone dating back to the Victorian era, which had seen one too many renovations over the years, most recently a very minimalist design from the '90s. To achieve a more timeless, elevated look, the soulless open-plan layout needed to be reversed, and the color scheme swapped for something far more inviting.

With several unexpected details and the careful reintroduction of architectural features, this small kitchen is now a warm, inviting room that feels thoughtfully connected to the adjoining dining room without being completely open. It proves that not every home needs walls knocked down to feel bright, open, and full of natural light.

Decorate With Soft, Creamy Pinks For a Warm and Inviting Scheme

It's tempting to paint a small kitchen white to make it feel larger, but the wrong shade can instantly create a cold, clinical feel. Neutrals are a great choice, but to imbue a sense of warmth and timelessness, a very soft, pale pink was chosen here, drenched across the walls and cabinetry for a seamless, light-enhancing design.

'The kitchen is a soft pink which glows in the sunlight. It is a color I really like working with. All the ceilings in the house are white, tinged with pink. When sunlight or lamplight touches them, they emit a very happy glow,' explains David Nastasi, Founder of Swain Street & Co. But this very soft shade was chosen for reasons beyond weaving a color thread through the entire home.

'Lighting is a challenge in New York City row houses, which tend to be long and dark at the center,' he continues. 'We wanted to make the most of the natural and incandescent light we had – the pink warmly intensifies that light, even on rainy days, late afternoons, and nights. It's a kind color – everyone looks good in it, and it goes well with other colors.'

Add Architectural Interest With Arched Details

When an old home undergoes several remodels, it can slowly lose the original details and features that give the space character – something this kitchen was lacking. After stripping back the '90s minimalist decor, David used arched details throughout the kitchen to reintroduce a sense of period design – as though the last remodel was done no later than the Edwardian era.

'Taking a cue from Sir Edwin Lutyens (a Victorian-era English architect who specialized in traditional style), we added the tall arched doorways. The tall arches feel dramatic, but also serve a practical purpose, allowing light to reach the center of the house from the street and garden fronts,' he explains.

The architecture and the kitchen needed to speak to each other, so the curved features were carried into various elements of the design, from the open cabinet connected to the banquette seating to the gently rounded island profile. 'The rounded shape of the island softened the look in the room, it worked with the arches and very practically allows for easier circulation in a high-traffic and tight space.'

Embrace a Closed-Concept Layout Without Completely Dividing Rooms

One of the biggest pre-renovation problems with this space was its open-plan design. Each room felt dark, lacked its own identity, and felt unsuited to the old architecture, so reverting to a closed-concept layout became a priority. But to prevent the kitchen and dining room from feeling closed in and completely separated, David implemented a genius solution with double-sided glass cabinets.

'Neither the client nor I like open-plan living. We wanted the dining room to feel like a proper room and have its own aesthetic, which would be distinct from the kitchen on one side and the living room on the other. I separated the kitchen from the dining room with a double-sided glazed china cabinet. This cabinet allowed light to pass from the kitchen to the dining room,' he explains.

This striking addition does more than just let light through into the windowless dining room – it also creates storage for tableware that can be accessed from both rooms, making cleaning, food prep, and table dressing a more seamless process. 'Dishes can be put away in the kitchen and taken out to serve in the dining room. The cabinetry acts as a wall between the two spaces, and we use every inch available.'

The final perk? Moving away from open plan allowed each room to have its own palette. While the kitchen was all about a soft, light-enhancing pink, the dining room was about something far more daring. 'The acid green was my client's choice – I was not in favour of it to begin with, so we wrangled over it, and as she is the client and it was her dining room, I caved. I am so happy I did. We knew right away that it was an exciting color and would draw people into the room. We used a high-gloss wallpaper for the ceiling with an arabesque pattern, which added a note of whimsy.'

Make Space For Informal Dining With a Kitchen Nook

With a formal dining room just next door, it would be easy to overlook a more casual dining area in the kitchen. But these informal nooks have an entirely different function, becoming a place for morning rituals, kids' breakfasts, and even workstations for every member of the family. It's a classic case of understanding how you use a kitchen beyond cooking.

'My client wanted a space where her children could sit and do homework or have their dinner as she prepared meals for guests. She also wanted an overflow or kids' table when her guests brought their children. The adults could have dinner in the dining room and still keep an eye on the kids in the kitchen – a formal dining space for the grown-ups, and a more casual space for the children,' David describes.

The dining nook also encourages a greater connection with outdoor spaces used throughout the warmer months. A smaller table that's easy to move, it doubles as a buffet when the clients host. 'Beyond the kitchen table is a very large terrace – the island and the table also serve as staging areas or buffet space when parties happen outside.'

'I am most proud that the house feels uniquely theirs, and we were able to fit in all the programmatic requirements the client desired with very minimal structural changes.'

'I think there is a growing appetite for color that feels nuanced rather than stark,' agrees Sophie Pringle, Founder of Pringle & Pringle. 'Softer blue-greens can give you the depth you want from a darker kitchen, but they tend to sit more comfortably alongside warm woods, natural stone and aged metals, creating a scheme that feels layered and welcoming.'

It's about confidence in decorating with less predictable colors – navy feels safe because it's been done so much, whereas these evolved colors feel slightly more expressive without being too daring. 'People are embracing color in all different ways in their homes and no longer want to play it safe with white backgrounds. We always believe it's important to add warmth to kitchens and cabinetry, and people feel more comfortable with color to do this, especially by not just adding warmth to homes in wood flooring, wood accents, or wood cabinetry,' explains Kelly Emerson, Senior Designer at Aidan Design.

There's also a subtlety to the switch. Navy and these smokier shades still sit in the same color family, but the tonal variations and undertones are what make them different. It's a classic case of cool-toned to warm, creating an atmosphere that feels calmer, softer, and more mood-led.

'My very first job was at a Taco Bell during its bright-turquoise years, and I lasted exactly one week. I've always blamed the drive-through, but I've never fully ruled out that unfortunate shade of blue-green. Knock the brightness out of that same color, though, and I might have lasted a second week,' says John Maloney McNamara of Coosa.

'In fact, take almost any color, add gray, or better yet a little black, and it stops being a color and starts being a mood. The blues I like have so much black in them that you aren't sure they're blue until the afternoon light hits, and there it is. They read as depth rather than decoration, and I think depth wears better.'

Above all, this palette feels truly timeless. 'Colors that tie into nature are the colors that we look to as timeless options. Kitchen cabinetry is often a splurge, so selecting a color that feels bold but will stand the test of time is important. We constantly pull inspiration from the landscape around a home; you can’t go wrong connecting a scheme to nature,' adds Sarah Fontanez of Pomme House.

Colors To Pair With Green-Blue Kitchen Cabinets

These blue-green shades are more versatile than you might expect. While navy is most commonly paired with white for a classic look, these smokier shades blend with a variety of colors and natural materials you typically find in a kitchen. It's what makes them so appealing.

'For me, it’s an absolute necessity that this shade be paired with a warm wood stain, or it can feel a bit juvenile. We used Minwax Provincial stain on our island to instantly elevate the blue-green perimeter colored cabinets. We found Farrow & Ball Inchrya Blue to be the perfect, muddy color,' says Cammie Malaga of CM Interiors.

'For the walls, I'd stay close to the cabinet color, just a shade or two lighter or darker, or, even better, use a handmade glazed terracotta tile in a saturated shade that echoes the cabinetry,' John suggests for a tonal look. 'No mosaic, no dramatic pattern. Let the whole room go a little richer rather than breaking it up with competing contrast. Commit to the mood. Nothing in the room should apologize for being deep.'

If you're feeling a bit bolder, more saturated shades pair beautifully with blue-green hues, adding persoanlity without taking away from the sophistication of the palette. 'Olive tones, or even an oxblood accent, can take the palette somewhere much more interesting than another safe neutral,' says interior designer Lauren Saab.

'We're big fans of Sherwin-Williams Delft and Benjamin Moore New Providence Navy (don't let the name fool you). Both have a green underbase, so they pair well with natural stain colors and the warmth of wood,' says Gina Elkins of Studio Casa Vita.

'We also love Farrow & Ball Light Blue No. 22 because its underbase is gray-green; it handles light reflection beautifully as sunlight moves throughout a room in homes ranging from historic preservation to new construction.'

That gray undertone is something John always looks for in these smokier shades, as it adds depth to a design. 'The rule for me is black content. If a blue or blue-green feels too bright or too clean, it's probably not the one I'd choose for cabinetry. I want enough gray or black in it that the color changes with the light,' he explains.

If you prefer the emphasis on the blue-green hybrid, look to paint color with a green undertone. 'Farrow & Ball's Inchyra Blue is a beautiful smoky blue-green with a lot of dimension. It can lean more blue, green, or gray throughout the day, which is part of what makes it so interesting,' says Lauren.

'We love Farrow & Ball’s Chine Green, particularly when it’s paired with warm, pale straw tones and worn brass fittings, as we have done in this project [pictured above],' Melissa adds. 'It has enough depth to feel characterful without becoming too dominant, and the warmer surrounding tones really bring out its richness.'

As later additions, kitchens in old properties often feel small, misplaced, and not quite right for the way we use our cooking spaces today. The answer? Moving them into a larger, more central room.

Designing the kitchen in this home required exactly that. Originally located in the basement, then moved to a small ground-floor room in the 50s, relocating the entire space made it easy to create a larger, more multi-purpose kitchen catered to the whole family.

With a thoughtful mix of materials, a careful balance of historic charm and modern design, and details inspired by the aesthetic of an old hotel bar, the kitchen has been reimagined into a hub for everyday life, whether it's family meals, morning rituals, or a place for four-legged friends to relax. And there are a few key features that make it work.

Add Modern Elegance With Slab-Front Cabinetry

A huge part of this remodel was swapping the formal dining room and kitchen, creating a larger, better-placed kitchen for the whole family to use and gather. But that also meant starting entirely from scratch while trying to balance the look of a new kitchen with the more historic bones.

'When moving the kitchen to the dining room, I didn’t want to try to pretend that the kitchen had always been there. The slab-door walnut cabinets for me were a purposeful modern touch to the space,' explains interior designer and homeowner Jess Cooney.

Instead of following every component of an original kitchen of her home's era, she took inspiration from luxury spaces that nailed the balance she was looking to strike. 'I wanted the new kitchen to feel a bit like a hotel bar. I loved the dark walnut element and the sophistication and element of surprise it brings. It grounds the large room well and still feels timeless in its modern flair.'

Take a Custom Approach to Open Kitchen Shelving

Thoughts of open kitchen shelving may conjure images of wall-mounted ledges or even miniature surfaces that add a finishing touch to a stone backsplash. But Jess wanted something more unique and statement-making, opting for a custom design that ignores the walls, instead sitting on the countertops and attaching to the kitchen ceiling.

'The open shelving was made locally by a metal worker for us. It was the other touch in the space meant to feel modern, fresh, and hotel-bar-like,' she explains. 'We played around with so many ideas for the back wall of the space and landed on the brass hammered tiles on the backsplash along with these shelves at each end. We decided not to put any shelves across to keep the space very clean.'

The shelves serve several purposes – they add a visually striking feature that helps to balance the room's proportions, while adding storage and display space in an unexpected way. It's a stylish example of introducing open kitchen storage in a way that feels intentional.

Elevate an Island Countertop With Decorative Edge Details

Certain details can make your entire design look and feel more elevated. And one that Jess has implemented on the island is a decorative kitchen countertop edge profile. From ogee to Dupont, introducing a more considered edge makes your surfaces look more custom and offers a nod to historical design, two things Jess was keen to add.

'The kitchen island was a detail that we wanted to feel more historic in nature. We added a good amount of detail to the base and the counter edge to give a rounded, soft historic feel as if you were in an old hotel bar. This visually balanced the straight, clean walnut slabs surrounding it. We added a brass rail on the bottom to call back to the tiles and to preserve the wood at the bottom that always gets a bit beat up over time.'

Remove the Formality with a Cozy Dining Banquette

As kitchens have evolved from purely functional to more lived-in rooms, the informal dining nook has become a must-have. Instead of a traditional dining table setup, a cozy banquette seat has been wrapped around the far end of the room, creating a dynamic layout and making use of the beautiful kitchen bay window.

'My family loves to sit in a banquette together. We had one in the previous kitchen, and we all piled into it together each night rather than using the formal dining room. I knew that I wanted to replicate this feature and to be able to sit in that sunny window with my morning tea,' Jess explains.

It's become more than just somewhere to eat, but a place to relax and enjoy everyday rituals. 'We still pile into that banquette most nights and even carry chairs from the dining room in to fit when we have guests because it’s so cozy and fun to be close together. It’s also my dog's perch most of the day. She suns herself there and watches for the mailman.'

Utilize Kitchen Alcoves For a Home Bar, Pantry, or Coffee Station

As it was once the formal dining room, the kitchen features an original fireplace, flanked by alcoves on each side. Instead of leaving them empty or leaning into the predictable shelving, Jess used them to create dedicated zones that enhance the main kitchen, both functionally and aesthetically.

'We love having a fireplace in the kitchen – we added a Stuv insert, and burn wood in there most of the winter,' she notes. 'On either side of the fireplace, there are deep alcoves. We made one into a food pantry with rollouts inside right off the island. The other, we made into a bar area on top and wood storage on the bottom. When we entertain, we open up the pocket doors and slide them back into the wall to entertain in the space.'

Pocket doors are really useful in this scenario, allowing the bar to be opened and closed as needed, without leaving huge doors obstructing the room when it's in use. It's these small but meaningful design decisions that take the design from standard to something far more custom and considered.

'A backsplash starts to feel dated when it is treated as an afterthought or a 'feature' that breaks the visual flow,' explains Jayne Everett, co-founder and creative director of Naked Kitchens. 'For instance, bold tiling isolated strictly behind a range with no continuity elsewhere often disrupts the design's harmony.'

'Small areas of tiles are dated; large expanses of tiles are a much better way to create a unique and interesting room,' agrees Helen Parker, Creative Director at deVOL Kitchens. She recommends committing to a larger expanse of tile or stone across the cooking run: 'This feels more of a design choice than just a functional necessity.'

Going for a countersplash instead, continuing the stone or tile across the rest of the kitchen or even in a slim upstand or ledge, maintains visual flow, transforming a simple backsplash into an elevated design detail.

3. Choosing Trending Patterns and Colors

A bold design choice is always admirable, but overly busy patterns or harsh color clashes rarely stand the test of time. 'Tiles, like lighting, can be considered a way of injecting some wow into a kitchen, but this can often be a bad choice, as they can dominate and feel a bit too much,' says Helen. Her advice is to opt for low-key patterns while focusing on texture. 'Finding vintage tiles is a great option,' Helen notes. We'll second that.

Subtle vintage motifs, such as Delft tiling, offer gentle visual interest without overwhelming the space, striking the perfect middle ground between plain and patterned.

4. Not Creating Enough Contrast with Square Tiles

While square tiles have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, designers are now stepping back to reevaluate the look. 'Plain square tiles can make your kitchen feel uninspired and dated,' says Isabella. 'Instead of this, designers are opting for more interesting shapes such as scallop or herringbone arrangements.'

Stepping away from basic square layouts is an easy way to break up the long, horizontal lines of modern cabinetry and countertops. Swapping for whimsical geometric shapes introduces easy charm and architectural interest, transforming a simple tile wall into a bespoke feature.

5. Going Too Plain

Steering clear of busy patterns doesn't mean playing it entirely safe. When it comes to backsplashes, there's a fine line between minimalist and sterile. 'Plain backsplash, such as plain stone and glass, can look dated and unconsidered,' Isabella explains. They lack the depth, texture, and intrigue that elevate everyday kitchens, leaving the space looking flat and uninspired.

If you prefer neutral kitchens, focus on adding dimension through tactile materials and interesting design choices. 'Instead, carrying the worktop up the wall with the addition of a stone shelf can really finish off a design and make it feel luxurious,' Isabella suggests. 'If you want to take it that much further, a ribbed stone backsplash can have an incredibly dramatic effect, and make your kitchen design stand out.'
