'I believe that the minimalist desgin trend in holiday decorating reflects a broader shift toward intentional living. Many of my clients are opting for smaller, more thoughtfully designed homes and prioritizing quality over quantity,' comments Dallas-based designer Courtney Batten.

'As we collectively move away from the notion that "bigger is better," we’re also reconsidering how much space we dedicate to seasonal items that are only used for a short time each year.'

'A minimalist Christmas tree, and holiday decor in general, is a natural extension of this mindset. A pared-back tree is not only more sustainable, but it also helps to create a calm but meaningful space for the holidays - a time that can be stressful enough already without excess clutter.'

'Choose artwork that complements the existing color palette of your bedroom,' Lichtenstein says. If your bedroom features a minimalist or monochromatic scheme, a strategically placed artwork with contrasting colors or textures can create visual interest without overpowering the space.'

'When I was designing for the Kardashians, we had to work out ways to incorporate lighting into their home that makes them look amazing when they’re on camera,' he says in an exclusive interview with H&G. 

'We buried special lighting into the plasterwork of the house so that their lighting gave them this wonderful, beautiful glow. When the cameras were on, they always looked their best. Remember, they are on camera every day, so their homes almost work as their film sets.'

'Sometimes, it's not about just interior design. Sometimes, it's about finding ways that make the client the star on their own set, and in this case, it was their home.'

As Martyn explains, however, this isn't our prompt to replaster our rooms to incorporate camera-friendly lighting (unless we want to, of course) – but it is a reminder of light's power. And this reminder translates to every size and style of home. 

'The most important thing in anybody's home is lighting. Lighting is everything. Whether you're in a small apartment or a castle, an over-lit or badly lit room will instantly create the wrong atmosphere,' Martyn says. 

Elevating our home's atmosphere with lighting can involve investing in a statement chandelier or small ambient pockets of task lighting. However, one of the most impactful things we can do is invest in a dimmer switch that allows us to lower our lighting levels to match our mood. 

'You can buy a dimmer switch for $20 [such as this one from Amazon], which changes everything. Dim the lights; you light a candle, and you create ambiance. You create an immediate atmosphere,' Martyn says.

'One of the cheapest things to do in your home that will change the vibe is to dim the lights or brighten the lights or whatever it takes to make the space feel good for you.'

Martyn's interview with H&G also marked the launch date of his new book, Star Style, a collection of all the celebrity homes he has worked on in his career. Among them are the Kardashians, Cher, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ellen Pompeo. 

'It's been a pretty amazing journey. I have to say I'm very, very lucky to experience and be part of that,' he says. 

While we're not all going to rush to replicate the Kardashians' plastering trick, Martyn's teaching remains the same: lighting is key. She continues, 'Dynamic colors should be balanced with warmed neutrals alongside black and whites to give them room to breathe.' This is certainly the case in Kourtney's bedroom, where beige, and warm mahogany wood ground the deep red pops of color.

Jennifer Ebert, digital editor at Homes & Gardens adds: 'Rather than the monochrome look we've become used to, Kourtney Kardashian's bedroom proves that the "old money" look is about restraint. With a few carefully placed details, she elevates her bedroom from a simple space to a very elegant and aspirational room.'

Furthermore, Jen Nash says, the lived-in look of Kourtney's bedroom, like the fresh flowers and stacked books, contributes to the success of the quiet luxury trend in her home. Jen states, 'If the home is too perfectly kept and designed it can actually have the opposite of the intended effect and look more new-money than the desired ‘Old Money’ aesthetic.  Finding the balance of curated imperfection helps create the grand illusion many traditional old houses have.'

Of all the neutrals, a gray color scheme is one that instantly brings gravitas, so it is no surprise to see that Kourtney Kardashian has used this divisive shade in her lounge to great effect.

Despite our love-hate relationship with a gray color palette, we can't help but be enamored whenever we see a gray room done so well. Designed by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, who is no stranger to using color, it was a surprise to see a predominantly single-color scheme. But this visually pleasing living-cum-cinema room is far from dull. 

In a conversation with Architectural Digest, Kourtney admitted that she doesn't use bold colors too often: 'I’m very afraid of color,' Kourtney confesses. 'But when you have kids, you can’t be so stringent. Martyn was able to introduce bright pops in a way I can handle.' 

It's the additional splashes of blue and orange – two contrasting colors from the opposite ends of the color wheel – that add a joie de vivre to the space. 

Decorating with gray not be might be your first choice when designing a living room or media room, but don't dismiss this outdated neutral so easily, say designers.

Gray tones can make a lovely palette for a family room or lounge as they exude a sense of calm, believes Charu Gandhi, founder and director of Elicyon. 

‘Gray shouldn’t be considered boring or cold; there are ways to make it feel warm and a focal point, either in wallcoverings or within fabrics and finishings. While in previous years cool grays alongside silver and high gloss tones were fashionable, we are using deeper, darker greys or even near-blacks in some of our rooms.These richer tones envelop you as you enter the room and add coziness.'

To avoid the room feeling sombre, it’s important to pair gray with pops of color and texture in accessories such as pillows or throws or artwork,' just as Martyn Lawrence-Bullard has done in Kourtney's lounge.

Gray harmonizes well with almost every other hue, making it a most adaptable neutral and giving good reason for its popularity, says Helen Shaw, director at Benjamin Moore. She says there are three approaches to take when using gray as a base. 

‘Tonal greys are perfect for anyone looking to add an accent color, as a complementary grey with a matching warm or cool undertone can be chosen for a harmonious look.’ 

Alternatively, she suggests layering a gray paint with a green undertone: this is a fool-proof choice, as green greys sit at the center of the color wheel and flatter both warm and cool colors. 

Finally, to make more of a statement, go for corals and pink peach tones. ‘They create a rich, warm welcoming feel with undertones of red, orange, and pink. It works beautifully as an accent to a grey scheme or as a statement wall color,’ she adds.

Nicholas Kaiko, interior designer and founder of Kaiko Design Interiors comments on each color featured in the bathroom, beginning with the black walls. He says, 'Black walls, especially in a matte finish like shown here, can evoke a sense of drama and intimacy. In interior design, dark colors tend to shrink spaces visually, creating a cozier ambiance. The inclusion of Hollywood lights around the mirror provides a significant light source that not only illuminates but adds a touch of glamour reminiscent of old Hollywood dressing rooms.'

Jennifer Ebert, color expert and Digital Editor at Homes & Gardens, adds, 'Black can be a tricky color to pull off in a large surface area, like on a wall, because it is so bold. However, in Kourtney's room, the bright lights, and lighter accents highlight the beauty of this shade. The black walls make Kourtney's bathroom appear dramatic and luxurious.'

As for the pink sink and pink marble countertops, designer Nicholas Kaiko says, 'The juxtaposition of dark black walls with pops of pink is striking and unexpected. Pink, being inherently soft and feminine, contrasts with the deep, moody black, breaking its dominance and adding visual interest. The pink onyx vase and whimsical feathers further tie in the theme, adding layers of depth and texture. These elements introduce a playful and luxurious touch, preventing the room from feeling overly sombre.'

Finally, bright pops from the gold hardware on the sink and the white trim around the door complete Kourtney Kardashian's complementary color scheme. Nicholas Kaiko states: 'Gold hardware, especially in a maximalist space, embodies opulence and luxury. In a dark bathroom, it acts as a highlight, catching the eye and creating focal points. The gold mirror frame and faucet, against the black backdrop, are accentuated even further, becoming standout features. He continues, 'Lastly, the vivid white architrave around the door creates a defined boundary and offers a crisp break in the design. It delineates the space and ensures that the dark walls don't overwhelm.'

The quiet luxury trend first garnered favor on the fashion catwalks before making its way into the interior design industry. With this, we've welcomed a wave of laidback, casual yet polished styling to our homes – an 'old money' aesthetic that has dominated our social media feeds, as well as our decorating choices.

The simplest way to achieve an 'old money' aesthetic is with quiet luxury colors that reflect the warm neutrals found in nature, such as taupe, sand, ginger, and ochre.

The power of a neutral color palette to add warmth and elegance to a bedroom should not be underestimated. A soft scheme of harmonious neutrals creates a reflective backdrop to the ever-changing light of the seasons. 

When decorating with neutrals a key element is the importance of layering with textures and tonal shades. ‘Touch and comfort are key sensory triggers in a bedroom. When decorating with neutrals, it is crucial to add in natural elements and pile on texture; a soft rug underfoot, or a diaphanous drape at a window can truly transform a room. Natural materials, such as weathered wood, slouchy linen, or marbled surfaces, connect us back to nature and add interest,’ says the founder of The White Company, Chrissie Rucker OBE.

Layering a floor-to-ceiling neutral scheme creates year-round luxury and warmth in a bedroom. Not to be confused with cold and bland palettes, new neutrals are warm by nature.

When putting together a layered, neutral scheme, similar to the one above, remember that warmer shades, such as creams, work well with cooler ones, including light grays. 

Natural palettes bring a timelessness to a room design. Weave a textural color palette of oatmeal with accents of brown furniture for a chic yet cosseting bedroom. Even when working with neutrals, consider how light works in the room, using pale biscuits or pink-tinged neutrals for south-facing rooms.

Senior designer at Crown, Justyna Korczynska suggests adding color with artwork against a neutral-colored wall, which is interesting and imaginative without being overpowering or too much of a contrast.’

Kourtney Kardashian has made headlines after announcing her pregnancy with musician Travis Barker after their marriage in 2022. Despite owning different properties in Calabasas, Kourtney and Travis's homes have one key uniting similarity: their color palette – designed with tranquility in mind. 

We've already spent time admiring Kourtney's white living room, designed by British-born designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard – but now it's Travis's time to take center stage. In his case, he turned to the celebrated Waldo Fernandez, known for his experimental use of earthy and neutral tones. And we'd say that Travis's home is the ideal canvas. 

Below, Kourtney shared a glimpse inside the drummer's living room – which is decorated in a creamy off-white hue. The color is an apt choice by Waldo, who reportedly worked to curate a zen space where Travis and his family can unwind. 

'I loved the simplicity and zen quality of his work. We connected immediately,' Travis shared with AD. To further create a greater 'sense of calm and order', the designer installed a statement house plant that adds an organic element to the monochromatic space. 

Paint ideas aside (for a moment, at least); the space includes a custom sofa (in a Dominique Kieffer fabric) and lounge chairs created by Waldo Designs. We can also see a white Mansour carpet and artwork by Raymond Pettibon – the latter of which brings just the right amount of color to the primarily white scheme.

The entire space is soothing but personal – and grounded by a shade that is a favorite of Kourtney's, who follows a similar style in her home (located 'only a block apart' according to Keeping Up With the Kardashians). 

But what makes white such a strong choice for the pair? New York-based designer, Artem Kropovinsky, has some ideas. 

'White is soothing. This hue is linked with serenity and calmness, contributing to a peaceful atmosphere in their living rooms,' Artem says. And since they so desire to create such a therapeutic space, it is unsurprising they began with this tone.'

The designer adds that the color is eternally adaptable and versatile – acting as a beautiful base on its own – but equally powerful when allowing other colors to stand out. In this case, it is Travis' neutral sofa, indoor plants, and artwork. 

'It harmonizes with every other color, allowing for easy transformation of your living room's appearance with new furnishings and decorative items,' Artem adds. 

 'White living rooms are universally soothing and appealing,' mirrors designer Mary-Lynn from Mary-Lynn Ring Design, LLC. 'The hue serves as a great backdrop for rotating pops of color, so, if you like color, I recommend starting with an all-white backdrop but experimenting with colorful accessories and artwork,' as Travis demonstrates. 

'This is an inexpensive way to maintain a timeless living room while still having some color fun at little expense,' she says.

Media personality Kourtney Kardashian is often associated with minimalism – most famously through her fashion choices. Kourtney's gorgeous home in Calabasas, California is, at first glance, similarly pared back. 

The reality star enlisted English-born, LA-based interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to create her seductively white-toned home – most of which offers a lesson in decorating with neutrals, timelessly. 

However, like the rest of the house, the incredibly tasteful living room is far from characterless. In fact, it acts as a stylish backdrop for multiple pieces with charming stories and incredible mid-century finds.

'For the design-living reality star, I helped create and curate Kourtney Kardashian's house to encompass her love for mid-century furniture and contemporary art, whilst blending her number-one passion: her kids and family,' explains Martin Lawrence Bullard. 'We gave them comfortable and easy spaces to  live and grow in while maintaining high style and modern design.'

Kourtney's house, according to Bullard, 'brims with modernist gems', including, in the living room, the museum-quality Oscar Niermeyer chair and ottoman (available at 1st Dibs), and a Christmas gift from ex-partner Scott, a Damien Hirst diamond skull. However, while packed with treasures, Kourtney insists the room is 'chic but practical... It's really for special occasions.'

Other finds include mid-century modern ribbon lamps, which you can find at 1st Dibs – 'I love these lamps because they're vintage,' says Kourtney; a 1960s candy box, a pool table, a kissing vignette paperweight and a Yamaha grand piano. 

'This is my childhood piano and all the kids are learning to play on it now, just like I did,' she comments. 

The coffee table is piled with books and game boxes: 'These Syrian inlaid game boxes are very important to me because they were my dad's,' she comments; while the walls are adorned with contemporary classics, such as photography by Ruven Afanador, which you can also buy at 1st Dibs.

So, while a white living room may seem like a safe choice, this room is clearly anything but characterless. 

The Tuscan-inspired palette has not gone unnoticed by New York-based designer Joe Cangelosi, who adds that the socialite's use of textured soft furnishings is equally essential in making the space more exciting and inviting.

'As the room is not focused on color, it's important to pay attention to the element of texture to make things interesting,' he says. For a similar look, he recommends investing in a beautiful boucle fabric sofa or Mongolian wool pillows. 

Kourtney's black coffee table, topped with (more) art books and plants, centers her space –and injects just the right amount of color. However, Joe adds that we can recreate a similar effect with a marble coffee table – that will add color to the room without overpowering the white. 

'You can also play with the scale and proportion of items, like having an oversized ottoman for seating and big vases on the floors to add yet more visual interest,' Joe says.

In terms of window treatments, Kourtney has opted for a subtle mix of white blinds and drapes– a look that is equally inspiring in our own homes. 'When thinking about window treatment, you can have some beautiful white linen or silk panels or Roman shades to add something beautiful to frame the view,' Joe explains.

'White continues to be a popular choice as it helps to create a minimalistic and uncluttered look, meaning it’s perfect for spaces you want to relax in, such as the bedroom,' says Helen Shaw, Benjamin Moore's international director of marketing. 

When looking for paint ideas, Helen recommends choosing a slightly warmer white, similar to the one in Kourtney's bedroom – to create a welcoming space without sacrificing the desired 'clean' aesthetic.

'Shades with a warmer hue have become a widespread choice for those looking to avoid the clinical feel of a pure brilliant white while still creating a clean and understated look,' Helen explains. 

Naturally, the best white for your bedroom depends on the natural daylight and artificial lighting – so what works for Kourtney might not be ideal in your home. However, if you're working with a darker space, Helen Shaw suggests opting for a shade with warmer undertones, such as pink, that is designed to excel in shaded rooms. 

'[Alternatively] for those blessed with airy, light-filled rooms, opt for a white with underlying warm tones – like yellow, red, or brown as these will be amplified to create a soft, calming feel.'

Paint aside, and in terms of accessorizing, Helen says we should take our cue from the socialite's space. She invites us to accessorize with natural colors and textures in our throws, pillows, and curtains  (much like Kourtney) to 'create an effortless Scandinavian bedroom scheme'.

Supermodel and socialite Hailey Bieber is a force in the fashion industry, but she's no stranger to setting interior trends, too. 

The 26-year-old, who lives in Beverly Hills with her husband, singer Justin Bieber could have her pick of the best throw blankets on the market – but one product comes out on top. And her approval is matched by the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Bella Hadid, Oprah, and several members of the Kar-Jenner family.

Both Hailey and Justin are reportedly fans of the Californian label for their soft selection of blankets and loungewear, but it's not hard to understand why this product topped her guide. Fans of Kate Hudson similarly spotted a cream Barefoot Dreams in her home after she shared an image of her son, Ryder Robinson, relaxing on the blanket in her living room.

The Kardashian family has never been shy about buying property, with the family's matriarch, Kris, once shocking viewers when she admitted that she forgot that she owned a $1.6 million condo in Beverly Hills. It looks like her daughter Kourtney has not fallen far from the tree either with the pop culture phenomenon recently dropping $14.5 million on a new California home. 

Far from some of the eccentric homes in the family's collection, the relatively humble Carpinteria beach house is a quieter choice for the star and her new husband, Travis Barker, whom she married six months ago. Until now the couple has famously not lived together, however, the purchase suggests this unconventional arrangement may be changing. 

Here, we take a look at what the house has to offer.

The house was completely renovated by its previous owner, with O'Brien having taken the home down to its studs during his ownership. The result is a cozy home designed to be the perfect, down-to-earth getaway with a 'humble' two bedrooms and one bathroom. 

The home, although not big enough to house the couple and their five children from other partners, the cozy hideout is the perfect spot for the newlyweds to spend time together after revealing earlier this year that they do not live together full time. 

If they do wish to bring the children along, however, the house also comes with a detached two-bedroom guest house complete with a living room and kitchenette and benefiting from luxurious mountain views. 

The bathroom and bedrooms use the same light beachy wood tones, white stone and tile, and natural light throughout, keeping the home grounded in its seafront location without leaning too heavily into coastal decor. 

The kitchen ideas feature new stunning granite worktops with light-wood kitchen cabinets continuing the beachy theme throughout the property. The kitchen also features intriguing open-shelving fixtures in front of wall-length windows, bathing the kitchen in swathes of natural light and opening the space up with a view of the lush greenery outside. Other fixtures include premium stainless appliances.

The 2,142-square-foot beach house makes use of an open floor plan, with the small kitchen opening out into the cozy living space. While the living room features a metal fireplace perfect for cozy nights in, it is the immense floor-to-ceiling windows that make a statement in the space. The walls of glass allow for unobstructed ocean views and access to the main deck with shielded dining space perfect for entertaining and al fresco dining. 

The views do not stop in the living room, however, with both bedrooms sharing access to a soundproofed balcony. The balcony provides yet another look at the sprawling ocean with sea breezes and whitewater views. 

The half-acre property benefits from 50 feet of ocean frontage in total and is surrounded on all other sides by lunch tropical foliage to maintain the privacy of the home and its inhabitants. Plants include an array of mature palm trees and bountiful bougainvillea plants. 

The outside amenities outnumber the inside fixtures with a beachside bath and spa complete with surfboard storage adding extra convenience to the nearby coast.

The gated property keeps unwanted visitors out but allows space for two cars with a carport complete with a Tesla charging point.

It is unlikely the couple will have many issues with their neighbors, however, with the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, George Lucas, and Kevin Costner also owning property in the area.
