'Using height is also becoming popular again, such as 2 or 3 steps guiding you down into the living space. This still allows for a light, airy home, but creates an obvious divide between each zone.'

Lastly, we should consider how to use a lack of wall space to our advantage (and ensure we have some more private areas).

'Open-plan rooms can often lack wall space, so short wall dividers can be really helpful to create a little more separation, whilst not removing too much light. Whether these are built out from the wall, or a partition feature made from wood slats or fabric, these can create a nice feature and are useful for practical extra space,' Molly says.

Working on Homes & Gardens' celebrity style desk, it's certainly not uncommon to find some uniting threads between the ways notable figures decorate.

I love it when I see a common theme between celebrities, whether that's through kitchen cabinet colors or candles in their bedrooms, but the one thing I enjoy even more is when I see something that's entirely unique – as is the case with Lewis Hamilton's juke box.

While Lewis is in the news for co-chairing the Met Gala, I took another look through his Instagram, in which I came across a corner of his living room decorated with a retro-style juke box, unlike any I've ever seen before. A deeper look at the accessory suggests it's a 'Rock-Ola 440 Jukebox,' originating in the late '60s. Its charming design ensured it was a popular model when it first launched, but I would argue it looks even better in a modern home today.

When decorating with antiques in a modern home, you shouldn't be afraid to mix your older treasures with more contemporary pieces, just as Lewis has done. To make it easier, Sami Jalili, the co-founder and designer at Arcola Studio, walked me through the process.

'Antique furniture and objects have that capacity to transport us and feed our imaginations. They also tell of times when things were done differently; crafts and skills that today aren’t sustainable, at least outside of highly bespoke and costly production methods. While the world is pulled one way and another, antiques stand as markers of a beautiful, certain past,' he says.

'When placed alongside pieces from our own time, magical conversations can occur. As a studio, we often tend towards introducing strong, heavy volumes into spaces and creating bespoke furniture that extends and amplifies our interior architectural choices. Introducing antique pieces into this context adds so much in terms of texture, layering, and often moments of surprise.'

When choosing antiques to introduce to your living room (or any space, for that matter), you should pick the pieces that spark a reaction in you. If you like music (which, I imagine, Lewis does), then opting for a juke box or vinyl player is the perfect choice. However, the opportunities are endless, depending on what you love the most.

'When designing spaces for clients, we are trying to create an extension of themselves in some way, to give them homes that can truly and uniquely be considered theirs,' Sami adds.

'When we include antiques in projects, we are asking those clients to become custodians of those pieces, and to continue their histories.' What more could I hope for a piece of furniture than that?

It's finally here: patio season has arrived, and with it, we have been looking for sources of inspiration for furniture and accessory upgrades.

'Gray and green together bring a natural, organic feel to a space,' Nina says. 'Sage or olive green complements gray’s muted tones, creating a harmonious and refreshing environment. Finally, for those who are looking to create a bolder backyard setting, consider the tried and true pairing of gray and black.

'For a bold and dramatic statement, combine gray with black,' Nina says. 'This sophisticated duo adds depth and modernity, perfect for contemporary spaces. Use black accents sparingly to maintain balance and avoid overwhelming the room.'

Anyone who is a follower of F1 may already be aware of the news: Lewis Hamilton has left his long-time seat at Mercedes-Benz and signed a deal with Ferrari. With his new car comes a new home – the latter of which happens to be one of the most iconic residences in Modena, belonging to Enzo Ferrari, no less.

Hamilton, winner of seven championship titles, is only the second driver to uphold the honor (Michael Schumacher was the first driver to live in the residence during his Ferrari contract). Interior designer Nicholas Kaiko states: 'An open concept layout has become a staple of contemporary interior design, and for good reason. This design approach offers several practical benefits. First, increased natural light. With fewer walls to block sunlight, open layouts allow natural light to flow throughout the space, making it feel more inviting and spacious. This is particularly useful in spaces with large windows or glass doors, as seen here.'

Kaiko continues, 'Open concepts are perfect for entertaining spaces, allowing people in different parts of the space to interact. Without defined boundaries, you have greater flexibility in arranging furniture. This allows you to create different zones – such as a seating area, dining space or even a work nook. Removing walls creates a continuous flow, giving the impression of a much larger area.'

If you want to recreate the living room idea, a few easy rules will help your space to feel as cozy and lived-in as Hamilton's. Martin Waller, Founder of global design house Andrew Martin recommends: 'Open-plan spaces are increasingly popular and are great for entertaining, but can sometimes feel sparse or empty. Use contrasting colors to demarcate distinct spaces and inject personality into different areas of the room. Choose darker colors to create intimacy in a dining area and opt for neutral shades to make kitchens appear brighter. Wallpaper can also be used in certain areas of the space to create a distinct zone.'

Waller further recommends: 'Use statement lighting to create different zones, that each have a purpose. Hang pendant lighting over dining areas and use task lamps in corners of the room to create cozy areas for reading. Open furniture, such as cabinets, bookcases, or shelving, can create different zones without making the space feel closed in. Alternatively, a folding screen can provide privacy, often lacking in open plan living.'

Despite being known for its versatility, this pairing has a way of making a cold statement, especially in spaces where you might crave warmth and coziness. 'Maximize the entry of natural light by using sheer curtains or blinds. If you have limited natural light, consider adding a mirror to reflect existing light and build an illusion of space. Implement multiple lighting layers, including ambient, task, and accent lighting. Chandeliers, floor lamps, and table lamps add warmth and dimension to the space.'

Another lesson we can take from Hamilton's space? His use of textures. As mentioned, he uses rugs, throws, and various materials via his chairs (including leather in the dining room space). 'Introduce different textures to prevent the room from feeling flat. Incorporate elements such as velvet, leather, wool, and lenient in your furniture, accessories, and rugs. Bring in natural materials such as wood, plants, and stone to add warmth and contrast to the black furniture. A wooden coffee table or a large potted plant is effective,' Jain says.

Alongside paint, Jain recommends juxtaposing white (and cream) furnishings and artworks (the latter of which is seen in Hamilton's space). 'Create a striking contrast by implementing white elements such as a white rug, white artwork, or white curtains. You can also play with different shades of black or white for a timeless and elegant look.'

It's not uncommon for designers to discuss the color trends and furnishings that have the ability to transcend trends, but what about materials? Lewis Hamilton's former living space encourages us to think about the type of accents and materials that will look just as good in 100 years – and nothing leads this conversation like wood.

In his space, the F1 champion accentuated the home's wooden architectural features – starting with the exposed wooden beams, floating staircase, and the light wood flooring that flows through the room. The material's natural tones interrupt the primarily monochromatic color scheme, bringing warmth to the cool white paint tones and black furniture.

As well as strengthening connections to nature which can boost mood and overall well-being, rooms that incorporate wooden elements often feel inherently cosier because of the natural warmth and grounding effect wood brings,' comments Claire Garner, the director of Claire Garner Design Studio.

According to Garner, light woods, like pine and oak (similar to those seen in Hamilton's space), bring a 'soft, Scandinavian-inspired warmth' – meaning they're perfect for monochromatic schemes like the driver's. Meanwhile, darker woods like mahogany or walnut have a rich, cozier feel.

'Don’t be afraid to mix different wood finishes in the same space; this will create a more eclectic and interesting space,' Garner adds.

Plus, she is not alone in her observations. Katerina Tchevytchalova, the director of the interior design studio K'arte Design, recommends styling a room like Hamilton's –complementing rustic wooden accents with contemporary decorating features.

'What I love about bringing wood into projects is how it pairs with other natural materials and finishes. For example, using wood against fabrics like linens can create an eco-chic relaxing aesthetic that is perfect for bedrooms,' she says. 'Wood also has a warm effect on an interior because of its ability to beautifully age over time so it grows together with the house and the client,' Tchevytchalova adds.

'These warm white tones will envelop and give a serene glow to rooms looking to achieve openness and depth.' Paint ideas aside, the choice of textures is equally influential. 'Choose monochromatic warm whites and muted organic tones to create a consistent look,' she says. 'Also, opt for a more textured rug (instead of a more fitted upholstery choice). The contrast and relationship created are key.'

The last step in achieving a warm minimalist space? Organizing your living room to perfection. This includes the art of decluttering, but as Stephanie explains, it's also about choosing furnishings that prioritize form as well as function. 

'Warm minimalism reflects an alignment of form and function. Furniture choices are sculptural, and textural layering is employed to give subtle and tactile depth,' she says. 

'You can also achieve this by decluttering and finding a way to store everything in an aesthetically pleasing way or hidden behind doors. The key design principle of design here is harmony, so taking out anything that doesn't visually belong is key.'

The power and beauty of a neutral room color palette to add warmth and elegance to a room should not be underestimated. Lewis Hamilton's living-cum-music room is testament to the everlasting, timeless elegance of a predominantly 'smart' neutral or beige space. 

‘What we call a “smart neutral” has a pared-back aesthetic which is ideal for using alongside stronger colors, including terracotta and shades of brown,' says Rob Whitaker, creative director, Claybrook. In Hamilton's case, he uses plenty of timber to curate that feeling of warmth and comfort. 

‘A neutral needs to be paired with other materials to sing: timber and marble work well. I also love teaming them with suede and woollen rugs,' says Charu Gandhi, founder and director, Elicyon. 'Ceramic, clay and colored glass are great for decorative elements.’ 

However, the biggest concern many people have with neutral spaces is accidently crafting a space that is devoid of character or soulless. 

Deborah Bass, director of Base Interior suggests: ‘Using a neutral tone while avoiding a minimal or stark atmosphere is a delicate balancing act between the natural light, artificial lighting and the other textures and tones used throughout. Sampling on site, in various lights including artificial lighting, and at different times of day cannot be underestimated.’ 

There's plenty of debate as to how to define ‘neutral’ colors. We tend to think of them as tones such as white, beige, gray, ivory and khaki that don’t appear on the color wheel. In general, neutrals are calming and easy to use – they work with almost every other color, but it’s important to consider how pigments are affected by light. 

‘The light in a room is key to deciding whether to choose warm or cool tones,’ says Ruth Mottershead of Little Greene. There is a difference between warm neutrals (with a green or yellow undertone), which work well in north-facing rooms as they bounce light around, and cool ones (with a bit of pink, violet or blue). 

When decorating with neutrals, texture and layering are essential. Mix warm metallics such as brass or bronze and natural wood with linen, velvet, sheepskin and chunky knits.

Use the concept of the ‘slow reveal’, too. If you can’t see all of your garden at once, it creates a sense of space as you’re not sure what lies around the corner. A comfortable seating spot with a stunning vista, for example, gives a sense of calm and tranquility. This works in even the smallest of balcony spaces. Choose the right plant for the right place, so check how sunny or shady your garden is first. Then take advantage of vertical growing options to make more space for plants. A combination of structural evergreens and seasonal planting works well.

‘Every garden, no matter how small, can be turned into an asset,’ says John Wyer of Bowles & Wyer, who constructed the medal-winning Florence Nightingale Garden for Chelsea 2021. ‘In a smaller space, every millimeter counts. The garden needs to be practical in terms of how you want to use it, but also think about how it will look from adjacent windows as well as from within the garden itself.’ He also advises against trying to squeeze in too many ideas. Instead, take bold decisions using a ‘less is more’ approach. ‘Decide on a color scheme and stick to it and you’ll naturally have a more cohesive and impactful garden design,’ he says.

‘My focus in small gardens is to organize the space, utilizing levels, framing views, creating social seating options and making every single millimeter work,’ says Mandy Buckland of landscape design company Greencube. ‘Track the sun’s arc to optimize the best spots, screen any view spoilers and create focal points that draw the eye.'

Another wonderful way to enhance a small or balcony garden is with a living wall or vertical garden.

'A vertical garden makes green space accessible to the masses and as attention continues to turn to where our food comes from, we’re not hugely surprised that people are now thinking about what more their living walls can offer them,' says Matt Lindsay, general manager at Growing Revolution. 'With a fixture against an external wall or on a balcony, those in flats and other urban homes can reap the physical, mental and environmental rewards that gardening for production provides.'
