Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who's the most room-enhancing of them all? Installing a mirror is an age-old trick for making a room feel larger, lighter, and brighter. However, in a bathroom, where a mirror is a necessity, creativity can fall to the wayside. This is markedly not the case in Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos's home.

The couple's luxe white bathroom features a marble wall and large slabs of marble tile on the floor. Gold accents bring a glimmer, and touches of green add a natural feel. However, the most striking part by far is their use of mirrors. Ripa and Conseulos have lined the back of their vanity with three gold-lined mirrors with textural detail. The same shape is reflected in the mirrors covering the front of their bathroom sinks and vanity. The excess of reflective material makes the room appear bright and stylish.

The boldness of the look is right in line with interior design trends. In his 2025 Bathroom Trends report, Jorge Hernandez, Head of Design at Bathroom Brands Group, states: As bathrooms evolve into multifunctional, personalized spaces, they are increasingly becoming canvases for self-expression, where bold design choices take centre stage. In 2025, vibrant colours, intriguing lighting, and striking fixtures will make a significant visual impact, shifting the bathroom from a purely functional area to a dynamic space that reflects individuality. These accents not only capture attention but also infuse the room with drama and modernity, empowering homeowners to infuse their style into every detail.'

Layering bathroom mirrors also fits into this year's trend of adding texture. Hernandez states: 'Texture finishes are going to be key to adding depth and dynamism to bathrooms in 2025. Offering a way to create depth, personality, and sensory engagement within the space, materials such as ribbed wood or stone surfaces will remain popular, evoking a sense of warmth and transforming bathrooms into immersive environments that go beyond mere functionality.'

He concludes: 'Visual texture will also play an essential role in enhancing these finishes, adding layers of detail through patterns like geometric or organic motifs, and creating a sense of movement and flow within the room.'

As Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos's home demonatrates, you can never have too many mirrors.

Using mirrors in design has more benefits than just giving you a place to check your outfit. A wonderfully versatile design feature, they add instant glamour and interest while also increasing natural light and maximizing the sense of space in your home.

Interior designer Nate Berkus swears by decorating with mirrors, especially if you want to make your room look taller. One of the easiest decorating ideas, adding a mirror to any room in your home can significantly impact the appearance of the space. However, this is only true if you know the tricks of the trade to position them correctly.

'In terms of functionality, a mirror can be used to spread natural light and to create the illusion of space,’ says Anna Franklin, interior designer and founder of Stone House Collective. 'If you have a small living room, consider mounting a large mirror above a fireplace or leaning against a focal wall. To maximize light, position mirrors in areas where natural light shines to reflect the light to more dimly lit areas – making the overall space feel brighter throughout the day.'

The position and placement of your mirror are key. It is especially useful for small rooms where you are trying to increase natural light in the room.

‘Placing mirrors where the light naturally falls is one of the oldest but best tricks in the book, it enhances the natural light and makes the room appear much larger and brighter,’ explains Jenna Choate and Mariana Ugarte, Co-Founders of Interior Fox. 'A carefully placed mirror that is opposite a window will echo the natural light and greenery into a room with limited space, helping to bring the outdoors in.'

Designer Marie Flanigan argues that if you only invest in one element, make it a mirror. The benefits are unmatched.

'Mirrors are not just decorative elements; they are transformative tools that can breathe life into interior spaces. When strategically placed, mirrors have the power to create the illusion of more space, making even cozy rooms feel open and inviting,' she says. 'Some of my favorite locations to place mirrors are on a fireplace surround, or above a focal point.'

However, think carefully about where mirrors are positioned, where they end, and what will be reflected in them. I don’t use them in a dining room as people don’t like to see themselves reflected while eating or speaking. I wouldn’t place a full-length mirror opposite a shower and never one behind a toilet!

When storage spaces are as beautiful as they are functional, it's a huge win. Often, shelving units can be bulky and unappealing, while sleek ones are more pleasing to the eye.

That's why Michael Bublé and Luisana Lopilato's take on the invisible kitchen storage trend immediately caught our attention. In a clip recently posted to Lopilato's Instagram page, we can see the floor-to-ceiling, white shelving units in her closet. The minimalist appearance blends into the rest of the space's gray floors and adjacent floor-to-ceiling mirrors, making it look uniform and pristine. While floor-to-ceiling storage is not available in every home, we got insight from a design expert on how to achieve similar closet storage solutions that are contained and aesthetically pleasing.

First and foremost, color can impact how storage units appear, and as such, opting for lighter shades is a pro tip. 'Using color and lighting effectively can significantly enhance the perception of space in a small home,' says Laura Watson, team leader of Ikea's remote interior design service via Barratt London. 'Light colors, such as whites, pastels, and soft neutrals, reflect light and make a room feel larger and more open, while darker colors can be used for a moody, cozy feel.'

Watson continues, 'Color placement is also important. Using color to emphasize vertical space draws the eye up and creates the illusion of height.' For instance, we can see that Lopilato's use of a shiny, white finish, blends seamlessly into the gray flooring, rather than contrasting it.

Naturally, closed storage solutions are beneficial to achieving the 'invisible,' storage look. On the other hand, open storage can be beautiful for displaying items, those wishing to keep their belongings tucked away should opt for closed drawers, particularly in places like the closet and the kitchen. 'Beautiful design is all about creating balance,' Watson says. 'I like to have both open and closed storage solutions. Have only essential products on show to avoid unnecessary clutter.'

Additionally, the trending invisible storage trend is highly verstatile, moving beyond the closet and into living rooms and dens, even giving us some media room ideas. 'In entertainment areas, media cabinets are being increasingly designed with ample storage to manage and organize electronics, cables, and other accessories, helping to keep these spaces tidy and functional,' Victoria Varney, head of interior design at Richard Grafton Interiors says. 'These trends highlight a shift towards smarter, more efficient use of space, with an emphasis on hidden storage that enhances both functionality and design.'

She also says that decorating with mirrors, like the large one in Lopilato's closet, can actually make the space feel larger. 'Adding mirrors is a great way to create the illusion of more space,' she says. 'Mirrors reflect light, which can brighten a room and make it feel larger and more open. Strategically placing mirrors across from windows or in darker areas can significantly enhance the sense of space in a small home.'

Designing a bathroom requires a careful balance of functional layout and stylish features. The plumbing has to be considered when choosing the location of the shower, bathtub, and sinks, yet you also want them to look visually appealing, too, which sometimes means thinking outside of the design norms.

That's exactly what Emily Henderson had to do in her latest project – the renovation of her sister-in-law's bathroom. The long, rectangular room features more windows than the average bathroom, which meant the designer had to come up with some rather unexpected solutions to make the bathroom function well whilst also maintaining the style and visual appeal she's renowned for.

Here, we take a closer look at the newly revealed bathroom and its more surprising design features.

Described by Emily as a 'serene airy bathroom', the space is filled with neutral colors, natural wood tones, and elegant gold hardware. Zoning comes into its own here, with the first half of the room dedicated to the vanity, while the far end focuses on the shower and bath, almost like a mini wet room separated by a glass screen.

There's a decidedly different feel to the wet room portion of the bathroom. White tiles have been applied to all the walls, while gray-toned tiles create a herringbone flooring design. The two zones are still cohesive, though, thanks to the matching wall lights and the gold hardware throughout the bathroom.

While it exudes elegance and luxury, it's the vanity area that really catches your eye. A wood double vanity is topped with an extra thick quartz countertop from Caesarstone with integrated sinks, creating a truly elevated look. The wall-mounted design not only gives the illusion of a larger bathroom but it leaves plenty of space for woven baskets filled with linens and essentials.

But it's above the vanity the most striking unique feature of the bathroom is found. The upper portion of the wall is filled with windows, which in any usual circumstance might be an inconvenience. But here, Emily has decided to embrace them by installing pill-shaped vanity mirrors over two of the windows.

While it might sound like a method that blocks out natural light, it's done quite the opposite. The mirror style means natural light can flood in around it, and a central window left open means there are still uninterrupted views of the natural landscape. It's also incredibly practical paired with the vanity lights attached to the ceiling – the homeowners can benefit from the natural and artificial light sources when using the mirrors to get ready (or unready) day and night.

As an Interiors Therapist and Feng Shui expert, I’m a huge fan of the circular economy and encourage people I work with to make use of thrift and charity stores, which can come into play positively when activating Feng Shui.

It’s often easier, and considerably more cost effective, to find a quick fix for unstable energy with a thrift store find. Buying pre-loved is a wise and efficient way to upgrade the energy of a home at an optimal price.

That said, there are certain pre-owned pieces I absolutely do not recommend buying from a thrift store as it may have come from a home with bad Feng Shui. Here I share what to avoid, and how to circumvent potential problems if you find something irresistible.

6 items Feng Shui pros never buy in a thrift store

Avoiding items including mattresses, mirrors, and deity statues can save you from job loss, relationship troubles, and even depression. It's especially relevant when creating good Feng Shui in your home for the first time.

I'm author of award-winning book, Welcome Home – How Stuff Makes or Breaks your Relationship and Feng Shui Consultant at Interiors Therapy, and have seen people be skeptical of the process until they see the changes in their own lives from practicing it.

Thrifting seems like it should be the ultimate feel-good energy bringer and interior designers have a list of things you should always thrift. After all, why buy new, when you can find something entirely suitable second-hand, whilst saving money, being more sustainable at home, and helping the planet?

In a world with finite resources, it makes sense to thrift, but I would avoid the following six items at all costs.

1. Mirrors

Energetically, even the best mirrors can be a challenge if thrifted. In Feng Shui, we carefully position mirrors for a specific purpose, but they are one of the few things we prefer to be purchased pristine and new.

This is because in some circumstances, a mirror seems to retain the energy of situations it has reflected. Where these are traumatic, stressful or emotionally painful reflections, that energy appears to seep out into the lives of the new owners.

I accept this may initially sound like total mumbo-jumbo, but two instances of mirror issues come immediately to mind. Everything was going downhill for a client of mine, Natasha. Normally a bright, confident woman with a career in modeling, she had become anxious and low in mood. Her relationship had ended, work had dried up and she couldn’t see a way forward in her life.

This had all happened over a couple of months, so understandably she needed answers fast. On a video walk-through of her home, a glamorous mirror raised a red flag. Although it was beautiful and had been a $10 second-hand bargain, there was something about it that just didn’t feel right.

In the bright cheery room, the corner where it stood was dark and seemed to absorb light rather than working to naturally increase the light, which was odd in itself.

When Natasha explained it came from a yard sale at the home of a suicide victim, the penny dropped. She recalled buying the mirror a matter of days before her relationship ended. It appeared the mirror had absorbed a very depressing energy from the previous owner which was being exuded into her bedroom and her life. She followed the Feng Shui mirror rules and removed it from her home straight away.

As a result, Natasha’s luck took a significant upturn, and now she has a supportive partner and a gorgeous little boy. She glows with happiness in a way she never thought possible.

The second negative thrifted mirror story relates to a home where many renovation ideas were carried out after purchase. When the family moved in, they placed an extravagant mirror in their vast lobby. This had been the only item left behind by the previous owner and originally hung over the fireplace.

Things weren’t going smoothly in the marriage since the move, and recent behavioral issues with the sons, resulted in the mother asking for a review of her home's Feng Shui to see if it was bad. As far as I was aware, everything was new, but there was something peculiar about that mirror.

The best way to describe it was the sensation of something malevolent or creepy, just out of sight. The mother said she never felt comfortable in the lobby and arguments always began there.

A brief chat with the neighbors revealed a twenty-year history of domestic violence in the property, much of which took place in the room with the fireplace. Although the essential energy of the house itself had been changed by the remodeling, the mirror had likely retained some very malign vibes which felt more threatening to women and girls. Needless to say, it was quickly replaced.

But what if you’ve fallen in love with a thrift store mirror and can’t resist the purchase? My suggestion is to take it to a glazier and have the mirror glass replaced. Then give the frame and mirror a thorough clean front and back before mounting it on your wall. That should cleanse any lingering negative energy and give the mirror a new lease of life.

2. Mattresses

I know the best mattresses can be expensive, and it may be tempting to buy second-hand to save money, but this is one time when pre-loved can really work against you.

A mattress is permeated with the energetic imprint and DNA of everyone who has slept in it. Skin particles and sweat find their way into the fabric of the mattress, even with a protector in place. It's why at the end of a relationship, I always recommend replacing the marital bed, or as a minimum, the mattress and bedding.

It’s difficult, verging on impossible to come to terms with, forgive, or move on into a new and fulfilling love, if you’re still sleeping with the energy of an ex-lover every night. That's why I warn my clients against picking up a mattress second hand.

On a practical level, bed bugs are an increasing problem. These vile critters like nothing more than to snack on unsuspecting sleepers and it can be incredibly difficult to get rid of bed bugs. They also spread easily, hitching a lift in suitcases as the souvenir no one wanted to bring home.

3. Buddhas

It’s fashionable to find statues of the Buddha and other spiritual images in homeware stores and frequently in thrift stores too. I’m suggest that unless you practice the doctrine or religion concerned, you don’t bring these deities into your home.

Firstly, it’s not appropriate to regard religious iconography as a decor item, and secondly, it’s highly inappropriate to position them in bathrooms, bedrooms, and spa areas. As a rule of thumb, if it’s somewhere you are naked or intimate, it’s not the place for a spiritual leader to be gazing down at you.

From many years of observation, in the homes of people I work with, and comparing situations in the lives of celebrities with revealing photo shoots of their homes, trust me when I say, it’s not a good plan to use a statue or artwork of a God, Goddess or other spiritual images as interior design, unless of course, it’s your long term desire to be celibate, financially challenged or lonely, even in a relationship which outwardly appears to be so much more – as that is the energy you will be bringing into your home with this move.

4. Artwork

This one isn't a blanket ban, but be careful when choosing art for your home in a thrift store.

Avoid scenes of stormy seas, fights of any kind including air and sea battles, ‘angry’ abstracts, or scary scenes. Similarly, pictures of becalmed, beached or wrecked boats are not going to add anything positive to the energy of your home or subconscious thoughts.

Instead, you are likely to experience an upturn in irritability, arguments or feeling stuck in your life. Meanwhile, solo images in a home reinforce the solitude and single status of people who would prefer a loving connection. You’d be astonished how a home can describe exactly what’s going on in the life of its occupants, and art is a big part of that.

Rather than buying something because it matches your color scheme, or for a space that needs filling, look at it closely to see how it makes you feel and ask yourself how a child would describe it. This is a simple method to assess how your subconscious mind will respond to the content and colors.

5. Beware furniture

While wooden, metal or other solid furniture will absorb the energy of a previous location, it is easier to re-energize. As a bare minimum, deep clean all pre-loved items before bringing them into a space, including the insides, back and underneath, and don’t stint on the process to release the energy of previous owners. There are practical, sanitary concerns here too if you do decide to go for it with a find you love or desperately need. Inspect upholstered items closely for signs of pet hair as this may indicate the presence of flea eggs and an unpleasant surprise when the weather warms up.

For sofas, chairs and cushions, always do a sniff test before purchase. Cigarette smoke and some other aromas can be next to impossible to shift. Residual dust also traps airborne particles, including pollution and dormant viruses, so take this into account if purchasing pre-owned rugs, drapes, curtains and soft furnishings.

There are many items you can steam clean at home, and this method is an excellent solution, but always do a patch test first to prevent damage.

6. Damaged, chipped or cracked items

These are never good value as a thrift store purchase, for your home’s energy, or for your own self-esteem. It’s important to feel ‘whole’ and supported in life, and unfortunately, battered and broken items can reflect fragmented energy in a way that won’t ultimately be helpful.

There are many amazing treasures to be found in thrift stores, so choose mindfully and consider the long-term impact on you and your home. If your initial gut feeling is ‘no’ then put it back on the shelf and move on.

These Feng Shui mistakes to avoid at home should always be followed if you want to keep your home's energy positive.

I like to think I'm on top of keeping my bathroom clean – polishing faucets, managing mold and dusting surfaces regularly for a sanitized sanctuary.

That being said, I am always on the lookout for ways to make getting the job done easier, cheaper, and quicker, so when I stumbled across a viral hack for cleaning your mirrors with shaving foam, I couldn't wait to give it a try.

With such a wealth of cleaning tips available online, I was understandably wary before getting started – but my bathroom mirrors have never looked better.

I tried this $1.29 cleaning hack to make my mirrors shine

While I know how to clean a bathroom, I do struggle with knowing how to clean a mirror without streaks, but, to be honest, I was confused why this hack would work. Shaving foam isn't a product I generally associate with cleaning at all, let alone for cleaning a mirror.

After a little research, though, I found out that, as shaving foam contains surfacants, it is effective for cleaning, as these work to break down dirt and grime, and other common stains, such as toothpaste.

So, armed with this knowledge and hope that it could indeed work, I got started.

What you'll need

• Shaving foam: I used a foaming shave gel from Bulldog that I already had at home, but I've just found this bestselling Gillette Foamy Regular Shaving Foam available at Amazon which I'm sure works just as well, and it's only $1.29.
• A cloth: I used a J cloth like the Clorox Handi Wipes Multi-Use Reusable Cloths available at Amazon, but you could also use a microfiber cloth such as the MR.SIGA Microfiber Cleaning Cloths available at Walmart.

How to clean your mirrors with shaving foam

Step 1: Apply the foam

First things first, apply your shaving foam to your mirror. I sprayed it directly onto the mirror, and then spread it using a clean cloth for an even application.

This did result in some shaving foam dropping onto my sink below, but this was easy enough to wipe off, and actually got rid of water stains from my faucets, making them shiny. Bonus!

Step 2: Wait

Then, wait for around 20 seconds to allow the shaving foam to sit on your mirror and work its magic.

Step 3. Wipe

Next, it was time for the grand reveal. I think you're actually supposed to use a dry cloth for this, but as I only had one, I rinsed it with cold water after each wipe.

I was worried this might be a mirror cleaning mistake that would leave my mirror streaky, but actually it just took a little more perseverance. I repeated until all the shaving foam had been removed, and then carefully dried off any excess water with a soft towel, to avoid a smudged look could curtail my hard work.

My verdict

Ta da! From start to finish, this process took eight minutes – which is reason enough to give it a go.

Asides from that, unlike when I tried cleaning my shower glass with a potato, my mirror generally looked incredibly good, without any water marks, stains, lint or streaks, so I will definitely be making it a regular part of my 15-minute bathroom cleaning and organizing routine. It's a perfect method for anyone trying to clean a bathroom in 30 minutes or less.

1. Grimey sinks

Is there a more hardworking or vital space in the home than an area with running water? We use it to wash our hands, rinse fruit and veg, do our dishes and tackle any number of cleaning tasks. But high-traffic areas such as sinks will see grime build up, especially around taps, drains and any hardware.

Professional cleaner for more than a decade and operations manager at leading cleaning company Speckless, Karina Toner explains, ‘Sinks accumulate grime from daily use, including soap residue, toothpaste, food particles, and hard water deposits. Over time, this can lead to staining and unpleasant odors.’

She recommends cleaning your sink regularly with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.

‘Follow this by scrubbing the sink and fixtures with a soft brush then rinse thoroughly with hot water. For tough stains, use a mild abrasive cleaner such as the bestselling Pink Stuff, available from Amazon.’

I grew up in a home where the sinks were spotless because everyone in the household helped keep on top of sink dirt each day. This included rinsing the taps after washing our hands to remove soapy drips, limescale and other residue, as well as making sure any toothpaste or lumps were rinsed away and not left to harden, along with a deeper clean every few days. Getting the members of your household on board with this simple step will help keep your sinks in decent shape between deeper cleans and curb build-up. I now keep a small sponge under my acrylic wall-mounted toothbrush holder from Amazon so it’s out of sight, but immediately on hand to gently buff any marks I see and it’s become a very normal part of my routine. I like the Scotch Brite zero scratch sponges at Walmart as they’re durable and a good size.

2. Stinky fridges

Have you ever helped a friend or family member in their kitchen and been hit with a pungent odor when you opened their fridge? It doesn’t have to be this way, but it is common in many homes, and Karina has noticed it more times than she can count.

She says, ‘Spills, expired food, and condensation can lead to a build-up of grime and odors inside the fridge. Sticky shelves and drawers are often neglected during regular cleaning. To clean your fridge, remove all items and wipe down shelves and drawers with a mixture of warm water and dish soap.’

For stubborn stains, Karina prefers using a paste of baking soda, which you can pick up at Walmart. Use some of the powder in an Arm and Hammer spill-proof box specially for fridges and water, then place the rest of the open box inside the fridge to absorb odors.

Baking soda is brilliant for cleaning around the home including in laundry and odor elimination.

I have an obnoxiously strong sense of smell so the fridge is one area I stay on top of militantly. To make it less arduous, I clean a shelf at a time, usually when the produce in that space has run out, paying close attention to dairy drips.

I also ring-fence 15 minutes before my weekly grocery shop or delivery to bin any old produce, remove loose debris and wipe down the glass shelves with an antibacterial spray (such as Method's Citrus all-purpose spray as the smell is lovely) or a soapy sponge. I repeat this on the interior door surface in the space between door shelves as drips can occur without you noticing.

Dry the area when you’re done cleaning to avoid introducing excess moisture in your fridge, which can lead to bacterial or fungal growth. If you use shelf liners, clean or replace them regularly as bacteria loves to cling to these, too.

3. Crusty cutlery drawers

Karina says, ‘Dust, crumbs, and small debris can accumulate in cutlery drawers over time, especially if the drawer is frequently opened and closed. The buildup is often overlooked during regular cleaning. ‘

‘To combat it, empty the drawer and vacuum out loose debris. Wipe down the inside with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly before replacing the cutlery. Consider using a drawer liner to make future cleaning easier.’

4. Tired internal doors

‘Internal doors, especially those in high-traffic areas, can gather fingerprints, smudges, and dust,’ Karina explains. ‘Door handles and edges are particularly prone to grime buildup.’

If you've never cleaned yours don't feel bad. I didn’t know cleaning internal doors was a thing until a relative did it and worked it into my routine. My two cats always rub themselves along doors and furniture edges and there are spots where the corners show signs of grime. I clean mine down when I dust surfaces nearby.

To clean yours, Karina says, ‘Wipe down doors with a damp cloth and mild soap, paying extra attention to handles and edges. For wooden doors, use a wood cleaner to maintain the finish.’

5. Dusty baseboards

Karina Toner, professional cleaner and operations manager at Spekless cleaning says baseboards are always on her radar.

She explains, 'Baseboards are often overlooked during regular cleaning because they are low to the ground and not in direct line of sight. Dust and dirt settle on them over time, especially in homes with pets or heavy foot traffic.'

For the best way to clean baseboards, use a microfiber cloth regularly. For tougher grime, use a damp cloth with a bit of dish soap on your cloth, Dawn Dish Soap you buy at Walmart will do just fine.

I also find my DIY homemade cleaning solution of essential oil mixed with filtered water and a drop of dish soap is brilliant at cleaning stainless steel appliances. Just add 10-20 drops of your preferred oil and keep it sealed in a clean spray bottle.

I used amber glass spray bottles like these from Amazon so all my home-made cleaning solutions look uniform when stored, either on open shelving or in my cabinets. They come with labels so you can be clear on what's inside long after you've made them.

7. Soap scum in the Shower

The irony of a space designed to keep us clean getting dirty isn't lost on us. But soap scum commonly forms in a shower when the cleansing products we use combine with hard water minerals, creating a residue that adheres to shower surfaces.

Karina says, 'This is more common in areas with hard water and can be exacerbated by infrequent cleaning. When looking at how to clean a shower, use a commercial soap scum remover such as Bio Clean Professional available at Amazon, or a homemade mixture of vinegar and baking soda.'

Living in a small bedroom is practically a rite of passage, but that doesn't make designing these compact spaces any easier. Fitting all the furniture you need into a small space – and making the design scheme look chic at the same time – is far from simple.

That's why interior designer Jordan Samson, who says the topic is 'near and dear to his heart,' just shared his top tips for making the most of a 'pint-size bedroom' – and we're taking notes.

From common mistakes to straightforward advice, Jordan imparted his tried-and-true guidance for small bedroom design schemes. These are the small bedroom design mistakes that are ruining your sleep space, and expert-approved tips for how to fix them, according to Jordan.

How to make the most of a small bedroom design scheme

With the help of budget-friendly bedroom furniture and design accessories from The Home Depot, Jordan transforms a small bedroom into a cozy oasis, guiding us through the entire process. But before diving into the design scheme, he shares the first small bedroom design mistake he advises staying far away from.

'The first mistake is thinking that white bedding and white walls are the only answer. You can absolutely have color and pattern, just stick to a more limited palette of two to three to avoid the space feeling too busy,' Jordan says in the video.

He presents a calming color combination of warm beige, army green and mustard yellow to make up the room's foundation – a pared-back yet bold color scheme that fits the bill. By sticking with two to three main hues in a room, you'll be left with an elevated look that doesn't take over a less-than-large space.

When it comes to decorating with pattern, Jordan says your bed's headboard is an easy place to go bold. But in a small bedroom, a statement headboard can be a bit too much. Instead, in his design plan, he looks to the space behind the army green, velvet headboard in an elegant shape that he's selected.

'We're going to create our own version of this using wallpaper. The wall-to-wall application will also create the illusion of a wider room,' says Jordan, showing a bold red and green wallpaper design from The Home Depot stretched across the wall behind the bed. The paper stops just above the headboard, bringing in pattern without taking over the space.

'Next, we want to draw the eye away from our limited floor space, so instead of a nightstand, we're gonna opt for these beautiful mid-century-inspired floating drawers,' Jordan continues. Floating shelves are an elevated take on the bedside table, freeing up floor space while adding chic charm to the room.

And to free up even more storage, Jordan says to 'skip the table lamps,' instead opting for a 'pendant and a reading light in [a] brass finish instead.' The combination of floating shelves and empty surface space makes this small room look airy and expansive, and the reading light's brass finish adds a complementary decorative hue to the room's sophisticated palette.

'Mirrors are your new best friend,' Jordan says, adding on another tip that's sure to expand the look of a smaller space. 'A large mirror placed across from a window will reflect tons of light and will open up the room.'

Jordan opts for a standing, rounded mirror placed near the far end of the bed to uplift the space and increase natural light. And a final furniture touch creates even more room for storage: a boucle bench placed at the foot of the bed.

'We're going to keep the styling pretty minimal so that we don't overwhelm the space – a textured rug and simple bedding will do the trick. With a little help from The Home Depot, we can transform this tiny bedroom from this to this,' says Jordan, showing off the final space, a chic and stylish bedroom that looks twice its actual size.

Working with a small space doesn't have to mean compromising on style – Jordan's work proves the opposite. With a considered color palette and functional furniture, you'll be left with a space that's fit for all your nighttime needs.

As an expert in all things wellness, it's no surprise that Gwyneth Paltrow's bathroom – AKA the space where we pamper ourselves, bathe, and conduct skincare routines – is immaculate. 

In a recent video tour posted to the actor and Goop founder's Instagram page, Paltrow's bathroom was revealed to be bright and airy, utilizing metallic accents and maximal storage space to keep the space looking shiny and neat. 'Because the material is pretty luxurious and a statement in itself, it’s best to style it with neutral tones and minimalistic accents to give the marble room to shine,' she says. 'I recommend using soft greys, whites, or pastel tones for your paint and tiling.

Paltrow followed this rule by keeping the walls painted a crisp white, allowing the marble surfaces to take center stage.

Despite the neutral walls, Paltrow does add  in metallic accents for a neutral pop, like the gold faucet and vanity mirror, and silver showerhead.

'For fixtures, matte metals will help to not overpower the marble while still giving the bathroom the high-end feeling that comes with the marble,' she states. 'With decor and accessories, plush towels, elegant pieces of art, plats and even backlit mirrors will help add to the elegance of the room and won’t take away from the marble.'

'Consider the reflection it will cast throughout the day and how it integrates with the natural and architectural elements of your garden to enhance its overall aesthetic,' says Charmaine Wynter.

There is plenty of folklore and superstition surrounding mirrors in the bedroom. Throughout history, mirrors have held various symbolic meanings. It is difficult to understate the impact that Scandinavian designer Gustaf Westman has had on the interior decorating industry over the last several years. 

The Stockholm-based furniture and object maker is known for his role in the 'wiggle' design movement, turning out colorful and wonky tables, chairs, and infamous curvy mirrors that have graced many a mood board.

Meanwhile, it is equally impossible to deny he cultural impact Emma Chamberlain has had around the same time. It makes sense, then, that as two elite members of the zeitgeist, Chamberlain enlisted Westman to create an innovative statement piece for her home in the form of a side table.

In a video posted to the designer's TikTok page, he details the process of constructing the commission for Chamberlain, from her request for a 'small mirror or little side table.'

Westman decided to combine the objects into one, resulting in a mint green, spherical object with slots to place books and magazines. 

'I came up with this wheel-y looking shelf idea, where the top part works as a shelf, and the bottom part works as legs,' the designer explains in the video.

According to design experts, this piece, and other ones like it from Westman's line of products, look best when paired with minimalist decor to allow them to shine.

'To recreate the Scandinavian decor look in your home, you must keep four things in mind, including minimalism, functionality, natural and light,' says interior design expert Ruth Foster.

Foster recommends mostly utilizing classic neutrals, such as grays and creams, alongside a stylish Scandi piece, but pops of soft color can peek through.

'Create a clean, sleek style by incorporating contemporary products with an uplifting, neutral palette ranging from off-white to sage green,' she says. 'You can also introduce natural materials such as bamboo, rattan, linen, and pine to bring the Scandi look to life with organic materials and textures in your interior design.'

How Emily integrates mirrors into the trickiest of bathroom layouts

This week, Emily took to Instagram to share her guest bathroom redesign, and the results are to die for. Integrating a moody floral wallpaper from Kelly Ventura and eye-catching pink tile from Pratt + Larson, the final design is the perfect mix of dark and refreshing. 

And while the room's sleek pedestal sink ended up in just the right place, a built-in vintage window occupies the space where a mirror would usually shine: 'Putting the sink in front of the window was really the only option that made sense so we just went for it,' Emily tells H&G.

With all the rest of the design elements down pat, one question remained. How could Emily fit a mirror into this stunning space?

To solve this design dilemma, Emily took to the local antique shops – she tells us 'there's great thrifting in Portland.' While there's an endless supply of new and functional (and often, aesthetically pleasing) extendable mirrors on the market, this guest bathroom's design called for something a bit more antique. 

A masterclass in styling antiques, the ornate oval mirror is mounted to the wall, in between the shower and window, and can be extended outward when in use. Its slightly worn appearance only adds to its appeal, fitting in beautifully with an antique gold frame hung above the toilet area just beside the sink.

Though Emily says the mirror's vintage quality doesn't necessarily make daily use easy, she says it works well for a guest bathroom. Plus, there's a second mirror hung on the opposite wall, which is larger and the perfect back-up plan.

'This particular mirror is very old so not the greatest for practical, every day use (hence why it’s in the guest bathroom and not the main), so there’s a new mirror on the opposite wall. But had we chosen a newer mirror it would work great. Think of all the natural light for putting makeup on!' says Emily.

This simple trick can truly work in any space, but Emily says some rooms are more suited than others to the extendable mirror hack. Ultimately, these small mirrors are better for quick glances, and not necessarily functional enough for an organized morning routine.

'I’ve seen it done with larger mirrors which can make it awesome for a room like a primary bathroom. But otherwise, I think it’s best for a powder room or guest bathroom that isn’t used as much or needs a lot of daily "getting ready" function,' Emily says.

This is where all energy, such as opportunities, possibilities, and luck, enters our homes and lives,’ Amanda explains. ‘So, anytime we want to give the energy in our lives an upgrade, this is such a brilliant starting spot – as this is your point of influence for what “enters” your life.'

Start by fixing your drafty door, using caulk or weatherstripping tape, or fix your door that sticks, before taking steps to make a front door look expensive. Then, turn your attention to organizing your entryway, removing any things making your entryway look cluttered.

‘If this space feels more like an obstacle course, say, the “everyday busyness” of your life piles up here, consider that it might be blocking opportunities from coming “into” your life,' continues Amanda. 'Evaluate the outside of your door as well as inside your front entry, and strive to make both welcoming.’

2. Take care of your houseplants

If you don't already have some Feng Shui house plants around your home, now is the time to add them, suggests Hannah Yang, Psy.D, licensed psychologist and Founder of Balanced Awakening.

If you already have plants, the start of spring is a time to focus on their upkeep, or get rid of any that didn't do so well over winter, she adds.

‘Make sure you get rid of dead leaves, as these promote negative energy – the opposite of what you want in spring, then fertilize as needed. It’s also a good time to rotate plants or move them around in your home. A bit of rearranging goes a long way to refresh the energy.’

Don't forget about your fake plants, either, says Suzanne Roynon, interiors therapist at Interiors Therapy, Feng Shui consultant, and author of Welcome Home: How stuff makes or breaks your relationship, available at Amazon.

'If you have fake flowers or foilage, they will attract dust and cobwebs,' she explains. 'Give them a thorough cleaning to freshen them up,' using a small duster, such as the OXO Good Grips Microfiber Delicate Duster available at Amazon.

'Although Feng Shui doesn't recommend fake plants, and they don't contain any positive energy, there are times and spaces when they are useful, so it pays to take good care of them,' adds Suzanne.

3. Clean windows and mirrors

As the days get longer each day throughout spring, it is the perfect time to increase natural light in your home to encourage positive energy and growth in your space. The simplest way to do this is to clean your windows, suggests Feng Shui expert Amanda.

She says, ‘In Feng Shui, windows represent the “eyes” of a home, symbolic of our ability to see things. They are also symbolic of the outside world and our ability to consider “outside perspectives.” So, when weather grime coats them, we aren’t “seeing” the whole picture or even what is right in front of us.’

Similarly, cleaning mirrors to remove dust and streaks can help the flow of light through your space. ‘Mirrors “double” everything they reflect, so keeping them streak-free is an excellent habit to pick up,’ Amanda says.

To do so, you can use glass cleaner, such as the Method Glass Cleaner + Surface Cleaner available at Amazon, or try making the best homemade window cleaner, by combining Castile soap (available at Walmart) and distilled water.

You can also use a dish soap solution for streak free windows, or invest in a magnetic window cleaning tool to practically do the work for you. The options are endless, so there's no excuses!

Then, once your windows are clean, remember to open them regularly throughout spring, says licensed psychologist Hannah.

‘Open windows whenever you have the opportunity,' she recommends. 'Even if it’s just for 10 minutes. This helps to get the winter air out and bring in the new spring air of opportunity. You can also cleanse a house with sage or similar if you feel inspired.’

Using the shock ventilation beloved in Germany, just five minutes of ventilation can also reduce the risk of mold growth inside.

4. Declutter

According to Feng Shui expert Suzanne, spring is the best time of year to declutter.

She advises, 'Always use the new, positive energy which comes with spring to undertake a massive declutter, one which really gets into all the closets, cupboards and crannies.

'Many people don't realize the detrimental impact of their clutter on their lifestyle, health, relationships, wealth and wellbeing,' but it's true – there are many benefits of a tidy home.

Suzanne continues, 'If you find clutter creeps back a couple of weeks after a big clear out, then sorry, but you aren't doing it effectively! It’s important to notice and understand the unsupported and negative elements within a home which act like magnets to draw more clutter in, almost without you realizing it happening.'

So, if you want to learn how to clean a bathroom in 30 minutes or less, grab your cleaning supplies and set your cleaning timer. Below I share the 7 steps and cleaning tips I swear by to get your bathroom looking its best in no time.

How to clean a bathroom in 30 minutes or less

Even the best bathroom ideas would benefit from a thorough cleaning session every few days. So, why not roll up your sleeves and see if you can make cleaning fun by challenging yourself to stay under the 30-minute mark?   

Gather your supplies

Before I start my 7-step bathroom clean, I like to gather all the supplies I will need for the job, so I'm not eating into my 30-minute window searching through my cupboards looking for the right sprays and solutions. 

For me, this task usually requires the following tools and supplies:

• A multipurpose bathroom cleaning spray
• Microfibre cloths
• A variety of scrubbing brushes 
• Method Daily Shower Spray Cleaner (my favorite is this eucalyptus mint-scented version, available at Walmart)
• Toilet bowl cleaner 
• Distilled vinegar

1. Declutter

I like to start by decluttering the space. Clear countertops, shelves, and other surfaces in your bathroom, removing any items that don't belong there. 

I recommend having a trashcan, a laundry bin, and/or a storage basket on hand for this part. Start by tossing anything you definitely don't need into the trashcan, such as discarded makeup wipes from your bathroom vanity. Then put used towels and washcloths into the laundry bin, and place anything else that is in the wrong place into the storage basket.  

These steps will make the cleaning process much easier, as you will be able to reach past the clutter and access all the areas that need attention. Don't worry about putting toiletries and other items back in their place yet, for now, this basket can be placed outside the room. 

2. Spray and soak

Once your bathroom surfaces are clear, it's time to put your chosen cleaning supplies to work.

I start by freshening my toilet bowl with Ecover Toilet Cleaner, from Amazon, and letting this sit while I move on to other tasks. I then spray an all-purpose bathroom cleaner onto surfaces like the sink, countertops, and bathtub. Finally, I apply a specifically formulated shower spray to my shower screen (though, sometimes I just use a DIY vinegar spray to clean glass shower doors).

I suggest letting all of these cleaning solutions sit and soak for a few minutes to loosen dirt and grime, making it easier to clean later. Although many of my supplies are eco-friendly, I don't recommend breathing them in. While you wait for them to work, turn your bathroom extractor fan on and step outside the room. 

3. Scrub tough areas

When the products have had 2-3 minutes to soak in, it's time to tackle tougher areas. I use separate scrubbing brushes to clean the inside of the toilet bowl, bathtub, and shower, not forgetting to clean grout lines and corners where dirt and mildew can accumulate. 

If an area is particularly hard to reach, I've been known to use a biodegradable toothbrush to get into nooks and crannies. Never underestimate how much elbow grease you can put into using one of these small tools! 

3. Rinse and wipe

Once you've scrubbed everything thoroughly, take a damp microfiber cloth and begin wiping down surfaces.

I like to focus on the countertops and cleaning the bathroom sink first. Then, I swap the cloth for wiping down the outside of the toilet. Finally, I rinse the shower and use a squeegee to remove any leftover water.

6. Shine bathroom mirrors and fixtures

Now that the surfaces are clean, it's time to make everything shine. 

To clean a mirror without leaving steaks, I spray a simple solution of 50:50 vinegar and water onto it and wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth. Then, I use a clean cloth to wipe down any fixtures like faucets, handles, and towel racks to make them shine.

6. Focus on the floor

Around this point, you probably have 5-10 minutes left on the clock. I suggest you spend most of this time focussing on cleaning the bathroom floor. 

Sweep or vacuum floors to remove any dust, hair, or debris that has accumulated. Pay special attention to corners and edges where dirt tends to gather and use a smaller vacuum nozzle for these hard-to-reach spots. 

Once the floor is clear, I mop it with a mixture of water and floor cleaner, focusing on any particularly dirty areas.

7. Straighten things up

Finally, with mere minutes left on your timer, your bathroom should be looking shiny and clean. Grab your storage basket from earlier and find a home for your loose toiletries and items. 

This seven-step method is not intended to provide your bathroom with a deep clean, however, I guarantee you will notice visible results in 30 minutes or less. Not convinced this method is fast enough? Challenge yourself to complete a 15-minute bathroom cleaning and organizing routine instead.

'It is also worth considering the size of items you'll want to store in the niche and make sure there is enough room for any 'pump' style bottles and a place to hang scrub brushes or washcloths,' adds Gretchen.

'When designing a modern bathroom, we typically incorporate flat paneling for that smooth and clean line aesthetic,' she adds. 'Incorporating the stone into the sink rather than sourcing a porcelain sink helps elevate the vanity.'

Emily Brown agrees. 'Use bespoke bathroom cabinetry for a unique design opportunity and choose ornate millwork, rich wood tones, and earthy paint colors with statement hardware and intricate stone edging details along the countertop for a contemporary look.'

'Look for alternative materials to use,' advises Barrie Cutchie, design director at luxury bathroom company, BC Designs. 'A big bathroom trend is concrete, but this can be expensive and heavy, especially in upstairs bathrooms. A great alternative is to use microcement, which is a specialist coating that can be applied to any hard surface and replicates the design aesthetics of real concrete for a modern, minimalist design.'

'Best of all, it is water-proof and suitable for underfloor heating so makes the perfect alternative to tile design for a walk-in wet room,' adds Barrie. 'Use microcement to maximum potential by creating a modern bathroom of dreams. Choose to double up or go as large as possible, with double showers and a large, oversized bath with modern, smooth curves.'

4. Focus on spa-likes clean lines

In this calming bathroom, designer Abbie Naber of A. Naber Design, chose to forego texture wall tile for a plaster application that felt unstated and spa-like.

'To achieve a modern bathroom look, focus on clean lines (flat front and/or integrated cabinetry), sleek and minimal textures (in this case, natural stone countertops and flooring paired with plaster walls), and minimal mirror and lighting selections,' advises Abbie.

A monochromatic color scheme works well in a minimalist environment to achieve that 'infinity effect' in the space. While a neutral, polished wall color veils the entire space, the layers of light wood cabinetry and textures from the brass hardware and accessories bring the design to life.

5. Embrace a warm color palette

Let this be your sign to try out a bathroom with a warmer palette. 'Modern doesn’t mean it has to be stark white,' says Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca' Pietra. 'With a rising trend for warm neutrals, this new bathroom color palette provides the opportunity to create a modern bathroom but with a richness and homely feel.'

'While unlacquered brass is here to stay, silver metals such as polished nickel are making a statement in our projects this year,' observes Emily Brown. For a cleaner and more streamlined look, wall-mounted faucets are a go-to for interior designers. 'Wall mounting your faucets picks up on my 50/50 Rule ... anything beautiful can be practical,' says Annie-Marie Barton. 'I called it a year ago, but beige is back!' exclaims Joshua Smith, Principal and Founder of Joshua Smith Inc. 'Beige is a “catch-all” kind of name with so many variations.' Whether your home is already proudly hosting all the beige bedroom ideas or only just letting it accent the color scheme in your home, let these looks inspire you to bring all of the versatility of beige to your entryway.

1. Keep beige tactile with texture

To work beige effortlessly, texture is essential says Kara Smith, founder and principal of KES Studios. Layering soft furnishings like entryway rugs, and accessories in contrasting finishes and interesting patterns will give beige a look that is far from plain or predictable. 'A chunky woven area rug, and furniture in a combination of materials like wood, metal, and stone and a collection of pillows in a variety of materials like raffia or Kuba cloth, leather, faux Sherpa, or fur all provide layers that add interest,' notes Smith. 

2. Color drench to tap into the expanse

Beige is inoffensive and adaptable by nature, so bringing it onto all four walls can create an expansive and uplifting canvas, that is ripe for adding interest elsewhere to enhance the space. 'Beige is a wonderful choice of color for an entry in almost any scenario, large and small spaces alike,' says Jessica Shaw. 'With the right color, it can instantly provide a mood of calmness and serenity. I love Benjamin Moore CALM OC-22. This is a great choice for drenching a small space that may not receive any natural light.'

'For more color and a warmer hue, Muslin OC-12 is a winner,' continues Shaw. 

3. Sculpt beige with natural elements

Indoor trees and plants will add interest and serenity to every entryway, and by deepening the chosen color scheme, natural elements can soften, or even add definition to a space. With a beige entryway that might want a linear contrast to a mix of soft hues, gather branches in vases, add a Mother in Law's tongue, or employ a money tree for a dose of the tropics.

'A sculptural or unique specimen tree or plant in a textured stone planter provides neutral color, texture and airiness,' continues Smith.  If you are a very busy household, easy plants that will not want too much attention may be wise to ensure your entryway remains polished-looking, and your indoor greenery in good spirits.

4. Offset beige with white, and warm hues

For both subtle, and less subtle defining elements, combine the lightest of hues with beige. The unexpected contrast will lift beige and bring its natural cozy character to the forefront of your design scheme in a way that beautifully defines an entryway space. 'Brightening with white is never out of style,' notes Shaw.

'Adding a pop of slightly off-white brings freshness to beiges, and just a touch of black helps to ground a space, while still maintaining a sophisticated, monochromatic look,' agrees Kara Smith. Weave these accents in via accessories like vases for greenery, or even in frames and artwork. This will bring a sense of cohesiveness and most importantly, avoid a washout finish.

Joshua Smith notes how tapping into a variety of shades can bring a relaxing finish to a beige entryway scheme. 'There’s a warm to the color beige that can help ground our nervous system, which is exactly the type of response we want when first entering our homes,'

'It also works with every color; I often work with neutral palettes when creating sanctuary vibes for a space. The key to keeping an entryway interesting is to bring in the gray, greige, beige, and creams. I also love to pair it with darker brown colors for a contrast that's still warm.'

5. Accent beige with black for an elegant finish

Particularly if you fall for modern entryway ideas, accenting beige with black will bring elegance and delight to your home. 

Shaw notes how beige and black can look effortlessly stylish and sophisticated: 'When mixed with black, in particular black lacquer, you can achieve a classy and classic style.' This look definitely touches on warm minimalism – a key interior trend for 2024 and no doubt beyond.

'Given its neutrality - you can add personal flair and originality by accenting almost any color with beige, just be mindful as to your beige's color temperature/family (warm or cool) when selecting your accent color(s).'

6. Let artwork bring drama and dimension

Be it a small frame or a three-dimensional object atop your favorite console, statement artwork will add a personal element and bring a statement to beige colorways in an entryway, particularly if your space is expansive.

'Showcase a vibrantly colored or dimensional piece of art or a dramatic sculpture to add interest and make a statement,' recommends Smith. Should your entryway be on the small side, use the walls and be clever with entry table decor, choosing slimline but nonetheless impactful pieces to lift a beige backdrop. This look could easily spill into the hallway to continue a beige theme throughout the home.

7. Enhance light beige levels with reflective elements

Designers have used mirrors to make spaces appear larger for years, and reflective elements can work particularly well in a beige entryway to add an interesting dimension to a soft color scheme. Consider placing mirrors unexpectedly to reflect interesting objects, like vases, sculptural plants, and other static elements. Employing more than one mirror and reflective finishes on pots and furnishings will bounce natural light around the room, adding vast dimension and drenching your entryway in unique personality.

As if to illustrate Jen's point, Hilary redecorated once again in 2023 for a very pared-back, calming entryway color scheme. The style has drastically changed with a black and white cushion on the chair, a brownish seasonal bouquet, and a Louis Vuitton box on the sideboard. However, the furniture remains constant, signaling the timelessness of decorating with antiques and unique vintage pieces.

Admittedly, I was drawn to Gen Z decor from the off. I have been seeing it grow on social media for years, and I did covet the mushroom lamps, the wavy edges, the checkerboard prints. But as with any trend, I didn't invest because I assumed that it would be more than likely this love for quirky colorful decor would pass. Plus, when something markets itself so much on being exclusively for those born after the late 90s you do question whether it's the right look for you.

But as with anything Gen Z, they have very quickly skipped the slightly cringe phase and have gone straight to actually very stylish. The Gen Z decor has adapted from pastels and gimmicky light shapes into a style that warrants some attention and I think I am ready to embrace it ever so slightly in my own home. 

But how to make Gen Z decor look chic and timeless? Well, it helps that it's very much on the way to becoming both those things, but I think there are still ways to approach this interior design trend that feels decidedly... grown up. So here's what I'm taking from the style and how I am making it work with my own space. 

What is Gen Z decor?

Gen Z decor varies, and it started very differently than where it is now. Originally, it was very much about playful decor, gimmicky shapes, pastel colors, and bold pattern. But it's started to grow up, and now it's far more nuanced and chic. It seems more about embracing dopamine decor and just creating spaces that feel joyful and characterful. 

Also, it's worth noting that a lot of Gen Z decor trends are inspired by actually very cool and iconic designs - the Cesca Chair comes to mind, and Eero Saarinen pieces. It's a style I find I am increasingly wanting to bring into my own home. 

How to decorate with Gen z decor in a chic and timeless way

I should preface with the fact that I am both a colorphobe and a trendphobe, I decorate mostly in neutrals and I very rarely invest in trend-led pieces - two things that Gen Z decor centers itself around. So I have asked some of my favorite interior designers to also help out here with some inspiration. 

1. Mixing in unique vintage pieces

This is by far the simplest way to embrace Gen Z style, and it's something I have been doing for a while now. Gen Z decor has no one style, it's an amalgamation of lots of different styles and eras, so what you get is rooms that are full of depth character, and intrigue. I have always thought rooms that stick to just one clear style, no matter what that is, can look a bit flat and almost too considered. 

'Bar carts, neon signs, and vintage full-length mirrors are just some of the trends we’re seeing in Gen Z interior design. These trendy elements offer a perfect blend of retro charm and modern style, allowing you to create a space that is both unique and visually captivating, even if you’re not in your 20s!' explains designer Kati Curtis. 

'A big Gen Z trend is incorporating a vintage full-length mirror into your interiors. Not only does decorating with mirrors serve a functional purpose, but they also add a touch of nostalgia and glamour. Look for unique and ornate frames from the Paris flea markets or a vintage store that reflect your personal style and place the mirror in a prominent spot to make a bold statement and add light and depth.'

'Remember, the key to tastefully incorporating these trends is to curate a space that’s collected and unique. Embrace your individuality, experiment with different combinations, and have fun expressing your style while adding a touch of Gen Z flair in a way that’s tastefully refined.'

2. Going for a subtle take on maximalism

Again Gen Z decor used to be all about maximalist style, but it's definitely toned it down as the trend has continued to grow in popularity. So the way I am bringing a touch of Gen Z into my home is to pick out a few key pieces that blend my minimalist style with something bolder and braver. 

Kati mentioned mirrors, and I do think they are the best way to adapt your interiors to a trend because they are big enough so that they make an impact and a decided change, but unlike paint or wallpaper, you can switch them out quite easily. I am ticking two Gen Z trends off with one buy with the Anthropologie Candace Mirror - oversized and wavy. 

3. Decorating with more pattern that suits my home

I am keen to bring more Gen Z-inspired pattern into my home but I still want it to work with my current style and last too. I don't want my rooms to look dated in a few months because I invested in a large floral-shaped lilac rug. I have found the pattern I am seeing that definitely inspired by Gen Z is checkerboard. 

And luckily that's a pattern that works with both bold shades and my preferred neutral color scheme. CB2 has been my source for any checkerboard needs, they have a collection of throws and pillows that tick the Gen Z box but also feel sophisticated and neutral enough that they won't date in seconds. 

4. Pick more casual furniture pieces

A key piece of furniture that tempted me to Gen Z decor was the couches. Relaxed, low-slung, easily movable, the sofa trends loved by Gen Z seem to be a grown-up upgrade from a blow-up couch or a bean bag. 

The iconic Ligne Roset Togo Sofa was the original that sparked this very casual sofa shape decades ago, and as with any much-loved design, the Togo has been replicated over and over so it's now become a very accessible piece of furniture, so mainstream it has become, Urban Outfitters even produces its own version. 

So (and this is true of a lot of Gen Z trends) it may not be a new trend, but rather a revival of a retro look. But I do like the feel of this more relaxed, casual seating and I think it's very versatile too, it's a look that works with so many styles.

5. Straying from an all neutral scheme

'I'm a huge fan of bold color and a checkerboard pattern, though maybe not together. In order to follow the trends, but keep your space sophisticated, choose one element for impact (for example, bold floors OR bold colored walls) and pair it with tasteful neutrals and high-quality furniture and antiques, to keep your home from looking like your first apartment out of college.' suggests designer Bethany Adams.

The whole dorm room vibe is exactly what I want to avoid, and Bethany sums up the approach I am taking perfectly. I am never going to bring really bold shades into my home, it's not my style, however, I am keen to introduce some color amongst all my white walls. Pinks, blues, and greens in their more muted forms work really well with the warm neutrals going on elsewhere in my space, so I can easily introduce these with soft furnishings and I am dabbling with the idea of a muted pink paint in my bedroom too. 

'When it comes to generational trends, it can be hard to say what's specifically on-trend across the board and what is more of an age-group specific phenomenon. I know plenty of people a couple generations older than I am who love the maximalist motifs often associated with Gen Z right now, and I know plenty of younger design pros who embrace more traditional trends like coastal grandmother and dark academia.' explains designer Kathy Kuo.

'Long story short, good design is about creating spaces you love and that serve your needs in your daily life - there's as much a place in the design landscape for playful pattern mixing as there is for classic antique furniture.'

The queen of twee has proven that she is also the queen of bathroom wall colors. Zooey Deschanel took to Instagram with a picture in her antique bathroom mirror, and interior designers can't get over the color scheme. The actress debuted her walls that use a combination of pink and cream wallpaper with muted blue tiles. Though unexpected, the pairing is stunning. 

Zooey's bathroom decor invokes a feeling of cozy and traditional farmhouse maximalism, and the color choices just enhance the warmth. Because of its positive effects, interior designers expect that her pink and blue bathroom colors will be everywhere in 2024. 

Jacky Chou, interior designer and Director at Archute, states: 'One of the benefits of using bright colors in a bathroom is that they can create a cheerful and energetic mood. Bright colors can also make a small space feel bigger and more spacious. They can also reflect more light and make the room brighter. A bright color scheme can also show off your personality and creativity. It can make your bathroom stand out from the rest and express your unique style.'

Furthermore, interior designers say the blue and pink of Zooey Deschanel's bathroom work perfectly together. Jennifer Ebert, digital editor at Homes & Gardens, states: 'Blue and pink is always a winning color combination, especially when it comes to bathroom walls. As a smaller room in the home, there's no reason not to go for a bold palette in the decor.'

 Jacky says, 'A blue tile brings some contrast and interest to this room. Blue is a cool color that can balance out the warmth of the pink wallpaper.' He continues, 'Blue can also create a sense of calmness and freshness. It can evoke the feeling of water and sky, which can be relaxing and soothing. A bright blue tile can also add some texture and shine to the room. It helps make the room look more modern and sleek.'

How to make an entryway feel more luxurious

Here, we talk through some really simple ideas to help make your inviting entryway feel and look more luxurious, whilst also ensuring it remains a highly practical space that's designed for the heavy footfall it no doubt receives each day.

Whether you're just starting out with designing your entryway and are deciding on bigger decorating decisions such as the flooring, or you are looking for some simple and easy decor updates to refresh your entryway, these ideas will no doubt give you some inspiration. 

1. Opt for statement tiled flooring

'One design choice that consistently stands out is a bold and gorgeous marble floor tile, which can instantly set the tone for the entire space,' advises Victoria Holly. While this is a bigger decorating decision, if you're in the process of choosing entryway floor ideas, statement tiles will no doubt set the tone to one of luxury. Opting for tiled flooring also creates an incredibly timeless look, so it will remain looking stylish for years to come. 

There are endless ways of decorating with flooring tiles, but for the entryway, you could opt for a border to create a traditional look, as Victoria suggests: 'To truly define your entryway, add a marble 4-inch border to help make your entryway tile look even more elegant and the placement even more thoughtful.'

'A mirror allows for the practicality of checking yourself before you head out, but it also helps to open up the space. An entryway is the perfect opportunity to include a unique statement mirror that you might not use in a more practical place such as a bathroom. Especially choosing an asymmetrical mirror or bold material or color is the perfect pop for an entrance,' explains Victoria Holly.

3. Set an ambience with accent lighting

Lighting is an incredibly important design choice throughout the home, including in the entryway. In the evenings, having ambient lighting will create a cozy feel which promotes an elegant look, which is important if you want the space to feel more luxurious. 

'A lot of homeowners may have an entryway light that is recessed, but getting a converter kit and putting in a flush mount light or pendant light is a much better option,' says Victoria Holly. 'When you opt for a statement light, you’re adding in another dramatic statement and something unexpected. A distinctive fixture can instantly elevate the ambiance, casting a warm and welcoming glow.'

Melissa Read, Creative Director at Studio Burntwood also recommends entryway lighting ideas to create a luxurious feeling, saying: 'Well-placed and balanced lighting can make all the difference in creating a luxurious entryway. I would recommend installing wall lights on either side of an oversized mirror to achieve this. Wall lights will provide a soft and warm glow, which is perfect for creating an inviting atmosphere.'

4. Make the ceiling a focal point

'Sometimes the ceiling is the last to be considered, but it can truly uplevel a space, especially in an entryway where it creates a dramatic sense of arrival and hints at the spirit of the rest of the home,' explains Joshua Smith, Principal of Joshua Smith Inc. 

While this is a decorating idea that relies on the existing architectural features of your home, Joshua recommends maximizing the impact of these classical features to create an inviting feel to the entryway: 'Adding coffered detailing can add immense architectural interest and make the space feel cozier due to its enveloping nature. Instead of simply painting the insets of the coffered areas, utilize a dose of patterned wallpaper to create a greater "wow" factor.'

5. Layer tactile items

To help an entryway feel inviting; a key part of creating a feeling of luxury, it's all about layering different tactile elements to give the space depth and interest. 'Having tactile surfaces will make an entryway look more luxurious,' observes Luis Carmona, owner at VERDE Interior Design.

'A textured floor runner, a wooden console table paired with a metal mirror all add a sense of touch to the space,' he continues. 'Functionality is key to a space feeling more luxe.' While there are many different ways to achieve this look, take inspiration from Luis and consider adding a floor runner to achieve a layered look, or add decorative and practical items to a console table to create a '"lived-in" feel.

6. Integrate storage for an uncluttered look

Having an entryway that feels luxurious is not just about adding decor items; it's as much about ensuring the space is designed with practicality in mind. Considering storage ideas in the entryway will allow items to be easily stored out of sight, avoiding a cluttered look which is essential if you're aiming for a luxe feel.

'First impressions are so important and ensuring that the entrance to your home is clear and tidy might seem like a simple thing but as every parent knows, this is much easier said than done,' explains interior designer Naomi Astley Clarke. 'My trick is to make it as easy as possible by creating throw-in storage – think tall cupboards and pull-out drawers under benches – for coats, bags, kids' sports equipment, and everything in between. If nothing else it makes the last minute clear up before guests arrive that bit quicker to manage.'

7. Don't forget to add a fresh scent

Ensuring your entryway smells fresh is an essential part of creating a luxurious feel. Whether you prefer the scent of fresh flowers or a scented candle in the evening for a cozy feel, there are lots of ways to add lovely-smelling scents. 'Scents play a large role in what one automatically thinks when they walk into a space,' explains Luis Carmona. 'Having a lighted scented candle or a vase with fresh eucalyptus on a console table will create a pleasant aroma upon entry.'

There are so many ways to create a feeling of luxury in an entryway, from opting for opulent floor tiles to adding smaller decor items such as scented candles. It's important to keep your design style front of mind, however, to ensure the feel of your entryway is in keeping with the rest of your home's decor. And, as interior designer Marzia Dainelli of Dainelli Studio explains below, make sure you don't overwhelm the decor in the entryway to avoid making entryway mistakes. 

'Be careful not to mix too many textures and colors. Remember that the balance between elements is crucial. Even if you want the entrance hall to convey luxury, avoid excessive accumulation of ornaments,' explains Marzia. 

It is perhaps no secret that Art Deco interiors have had a modern revival in recent years, but in his Toronto mansion, Drake has taken this aesthetic to new heights. With the help of Canadian designer Ferris Rafauli, the singer set the standard for the Modern Art Deco trend through spaces that ooze 'high luxury,' and this begins with the living room. 

Much like the rest of his home (named 'The Embassy' by Drake), the living room exhibits overwhelming grandeur, including Tuscan leather, tobacco leaf, and a cocooning dark color scheme. However, while this rich palette is something to note, it is the gold accents that serve as the ultimate nod to the Modern Art Deco style. 

Decorating with gold comes with inevitable caution, as this hue is so luxurious that it's important to use it in excess. Even Drake's home, one of the most opulent spaces we've ever seen, uses gold sparingly – and designers say it's right on trend.

'Gold is always going to be a popular accent color for a variety of interior design styles, and the recent trend for gold decor proves how versatile this metallic is,' comments designer Kathy Kuo. 

'When I think of 70s gold, I think of really laidback luxury – it's mellow and whimsical but also very chic and upscale. My advice for bringing this trend into your home would be to embrace 70s gold as a winking contrast or accent rather than the dominant decor element. Too much can make your home look like a set piece, but the right amount is both fun and flashy.'

Designer Mariya Snisar agrees. She, too, emphasizes that we should not over-indulge in gold but should, instead, look to include 'a few rich gold accent decor pieces' that can 'create this alluring aesthetic' without overpowering our space. 

'To ensure the gold decor items don't look gaudy or out of place, you’ll want to consider their size, texture, and position in the room,' she says. 'Smaller gold decor accessories can be grouped close to each other, while bigger pieces like floor lamps or tables can usually stand alone.'

In Drake's home, Ferris Rafauli paired the gold pockets with deep hues: black marble and glossy dark brown, but in more pared-back homes, this color complements warm hues, such as those found in wood paneling and open brick walls. 'Their textured surfaces contrast well with gold’s smooth, lustrous finish,' Mariya comments.

'Gold also looks wonderful when paired with cooler colors like teal and Parisian blue, which cause gold to stand out more.' Gold-hued accessories offer a similar, luxe aesthetic and pair equally well with these surrounding tones. We're starting with these picks below.

IKEA is recalling thousands of its mirrors after finding risks of a 'laceration hazard'. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada, and IKEA themselves, the plastic fittings which hold the LETTAN mirror in place are liable to snap.

This is an ongoing issue with these mirrors, and thousands were recalled in March of this year for the same flaw. There has been minor property damage and one minor injury, but over the two product recalls there have been 65 reported incidents of this fault. 

The recall affects all sizes of this mirror, which are 38x23, 38x31, 38x39 and 28x47 inches; any mirror with a date stamp before and including '2105' should be returned for replacement wall fittings, or a full refund without a receipt. 

IKEA recall - what to do now

This recall affects around 37,000 mirrors in the United States and around 28,000 mirrors in Canada. It's not all IKEA mirrors; only the 'LETTAN' model is affected.

If you own an IKEA mirror, the first thing you need to do is take the mirror down from your wall. You should then check the model name and number. If it's a LETTAN mirror, the next thing to do is check the date stamp. 

IKEA says that the recall affects 'all LETTAN date stamps before and including 2105', so if your mirror has a date stamp below 2105, it's subject to the recall. The latest 'expansion of recall' announced by IKEA since the original recall in March is that this also applies to 'mirrors with supplier number 21944, date stamps before and including 2325'. 

The mirrors were sold in North American stores and on IKEA's website. If you bought an IKEA mirror between December 2019 and June 2023, you should check the date stamp and contact IKEA for either replacement wall fittings or a full refund.

Can I get a replacement?

IKEA are offering replacement wall fittings. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, IKEA are also offering full refunds. However, you cannot swap your Lettan mirror for a different IKEA mirror.

We tend to develop an opinion about a space by using our visual senses, but we cannot underestimate the power of touch. 1. Painted accent walls

No so long ago, creating an accent wall in a room with paint ideas has been a popular choice. 'I'm not a fan of the feature wall,' observes interior Naomi Astley Clarke. 'If you're going to paint a room a bolder or darker color, my advice is to commit and paint all the walls, otherwise, you risk an awkward, dated-looking scheme.'

Interior designer Artem Kropovinsky also warns of statement paint ideas in the home, explaining: 'Faux finishes, like sponge painting, feel out of sync with current aesthetics.'

For a more current look, embrace color drenching as Naomi suggests which will bring a modern feel and can also create the illusion of more space: 'I’d also recommend painting the ceiling in the same color as the walls, as this will make a room feel larger.'

2. Overly matching gallery walls

While gallery walls have largely been embraced by homeowners and interior designers alike as a way of adding personality to the home, experts say that gallery walls, more specifically gallery walls that are perfectly regimented can look dull. 

'Strict gallery walls with identical frames and spacing lack the organic flow that contemporary designs cherish,' says Artem. Ginger Curtis, Founder of Urbanology Designs agrees, adding: 'Perfectly symmetrical photo walls are becoming outdated.'

Instead, you should opt for a more effortless look that celebrates a mismatched approach. Ginger says: 'Embrace the charm of imperfect displays that tell a story and exude character. It's all about capturing the essence of your family in a way that's uniquely you.' Having a range of different artworks and varying styles and sizes of frames will enable a more eclectic look, and will help you avoid making common gallery wall mistakes. 

3. Wall decals

Perhaps a less common wall decor choice, wall decals have been embraced to create a bold statement in a room, particularly in large spaces with plain walls. Experts say however that wall decals can run the risk of looking temporary and unsophisticated, and instead suggest opting for decorating with art or adding a large mirror to establish a more timeless feel.

Devon Wegman, Design Director at Devon Grace Interiors explains: 'Wall decals always seem to cheapen a space. It's best to opt for framed artwork or mirrors on a wall to give a more intentional, finished aesthetic.'

Artem agrees, referencing typographic wall decals as something to steer clear of: 'Massive wall quotes, especially in vinyl decals, have had their moment. Subtlety is key now.'

You can, however, minimize clutter and simplify the room's layout to ensure you do not overwhelm the space, or be selective about the amount of mirrors you use.

It's all a balance; use mirrors purposefully rather than filling every available wall space with them.

'I love using mirrors to enhance the sense of space in my home and think the key thing to bear in mind is what the mirror is going to reflect,' advises Millie Hurst, section editor at Homes & Gardens. Additionally Keith Sant advises, 'Don't place mirrors in dark rooms or areas with no natural light. Natural light is essential when it comes to using mirrors decoratively. It helps reflect the light and adds brightness to a room, making it appear larger and more inviting. ‘Pick a subtle, repeating pattern on white to provide a visual pop to the space. With any luck, your guests will be so enamored by the print, they won’t notice the lack of a window!’, says Amanda Wiss, founder of NYC-based home staging company, Urban Staging.

'In a windowless bathroom, my biggest piece of advice is to make use of the wall space to add brightness where you can. In any bathroom, a mirror is essential, but when you don't have windows, consider multiple mirrors on the walls to add extra dimension and light.' suggests designer Kathy Kuo. 

Jennifer Davis agrees that 'Strategic placement of mirrors is another invaluable technique. Mirrors can effectively reflect light, creating a sense of spaciousness in the room. For a sleek, space-enhancing touch, consider a built-in floating vanity with discreet under-illumination.'

2. Embrace the darkness

While using lighter colors in a windowless bathroom makes sense, there is the second, and potentially chicer option, to lean into the lack of natural light and go dark and moody with the scheme. Think deep blues, greens, purples, and even black. 

'We've designed several windowless bathrooms, and they are undoubtedly tricky. However, in a small powder room, the absence of daylight is an opportunity to turn the space into a jewel box through interesting materials, wallpaper, and shimmering or unusual statement lighting,' suggests Keren Ritcher, co-founder of White Arrow.

'Light colors have the inherent ability to bounce and amplify artificial light, reducing the feeling of confinement,' says Jennifer. 'However, I should note that a moody, dark bathroom without windows can also be captivating, especially if you ensure ample artificial lighting and incorporate plenty of reflective surfaces to maximize light play. The introduction of wallpaper with metallic elements can further enhance this light reflection and we are huge fans of this option!'

3. Go for glossy finishes

'Reflective surfaces become the silent poets, narrating light's ballet throughout a windowless bathroom,' is how designer Artem Kropovinsky gracefully describes it. While so many bathroom trends right now point towards soft, matte finishes, the exception to this comes in a windowless space. You need to max out reflective surfaces, bouncing as much light around as possible. 

'Regardless of your chosen wall color or covering, integrating glossy and glassy materials, such as glass shower doors, high-gloss cabinetry, or reflective tiles, can go a long way in amplifying light reflection and enhancing the overall spaciousness of the bathroom.' adds Jennifer.

Even a bathroom wallpaper can help, opt for something with a sheen, you don't have to go as far as glitter but a flash of metallic will really lift the walls. Likewise, avoid totally matte paint, it can look super dull when there's zero natural light. 

4. Layer the lighting

Lighting has to work hard in a windowless bathroom. The best approach is to layer your bathroom lighting so you have lots of sources at different levels. You really want to avoid any harsh, cold overhead lighting.

'When it comes to decorating a windowless bathroom, the choice and placement of lighting are absolutely crucial. I prefer a layered approach, incorporating recessed can lights, wall or pendant sconces, and even decorative ceiling fixtures, provided the room's size allows for it. This layered lighting scheme offers flexibility, allowing you to tailor the illumination as needed throughout the day.' explains Jennifer.

'In a primary bath, where more functionality is needed, layered lighting like overhead lighting and sconces that bounce the light on your face rather than from above (which casts less flattering shadows) is crucial. The absence of natural air flow also makes it essential to consider bathroom fans and add custom attractive grill covers to integrate them into the interiors seamlessly,' adds Keren.

Just to add to that note on ventilation. It's not glamorous, but it's so important in a windowless bathroom. 'For a more functional aspect, make sure that the bathroom is equipped with a proper bath fan!  Adequate ventilation is essential to control humidity and maintain a fresh, comfortable environment, making it an essential feature that marries function with style.  (I speak from experience on that).' explains Jennifer. 

5. Bring in touches of nature

'To infuse a touch of nature, we often include plants into a windowless bathroom, particularly those that thrive in low light conditions, like succulents. These plants bring a refreshing element into the space, promoting a sense of calm.' suggests Jennifer. 

There are plenty of plants that thrive in low light, however, if you want something specific, you could always go fake. Indoor trees can really work in a windowless space as they add depth and texture to all the hard surfaces. Dried flowers would also be a more low-maintenance option, hang them in bunches around the sink area, or in vases on the vanity.

Windowless bathrooms are not the easiest to decorate, there is no denying that. But with so many interior design trends and styles based on spaces that have unlimited amounts of natural light, we are so used to seeing the lack of light as this massive issue to have to overcome. 

However, dark rooms can be the perfect opportunity to be more experimental with your decor, have fun with color and patterns, and finishes. 'Arriving home, we want to feel like we have just arrived at our sanctuary. A warm entryway where one can stop and unload and feel welcome and happy to have arrived. To cozy up your entryway, you want to add visual and physical comfort with warm tones and materials,' says Ami McKay, creator of PURE Design. 

Decorating in neutrals and bringing in velour-upholstered seating, wooden elements, and dried or fresh greenery can all make beautiful additions.

3. Add artistic delight

What is an entryway if not a fine opportunity to welcome guests and share a little about your home's personality with them? 'Artwork or wallpaper will be impactful in a small space - there are so many options out there to find what it is that adds warmth to an entryway,' says McKay.

Whether it is a canvas or an accent wall, explore different ways that bring exuberant detail for a toastier invite.

4. Keep flooring luxurious

If you have the opportunity to design an entryway from scratch, or in a remodel, paying close attention to your flooring will help elevate the feel of the entire space. 

'An entryway is the opening act for your home,' says interior designer Victoria Holly. 'This space should not be forgotten, but instead crafted with striking elements for a cozy welcome.

'One design choice that consistently stands out is a bold and gorgeous marble floor tile, which can instantly set the tone for the entire space. To truly define your entryway, add a marble 4” border to help make your entryway tile look even more elegant and the placement even more thoughtful.'

'A mirror also allows for the practicality of checking yourself before you head out, but it also helps to open up the space. An entryway is the perfect opportunity to include a unique statement mirror that you might not use in a more practical place such as a bathroom,' Holly tells us.

For a cozier and more remarkable finish, aim to do things slightly differently, be that in the design of the mirror itself, or in its placement.

'Especially choosing an asymmetrical mirror or bold material or color is the perfect pop for an entrance,' adds Holly.

A comfortable entryway must be well-lit, and if natural light is not on your side, you will be able to explore more exciting designs for a toastier finish.

'Accent lighting is also crucial to a gorgeous entryway. A lot of homeowners may have an entryway light that is recessed, but getting a converter kit and putting in a flush mount light or pendant light is a much better option. When you opt for a statement light, you’re adding in another dramatic statement and something unexpected,' says Holly. 'A distinctive fixture can instantly elevate the ambiance, casting a warm and welcoming glow.'

Consider layering lighting for the perfect balance. Wall sconces are another brilliant way to make an entryway more welcoming Smith tells us. Celebrity interior designer Nate Burkus emphasizes that both the quality of the bedding and the styling of the bed count. ‘The key to creating a luxury, hotel-like experience for your guest room, for the holidays and beyond, is to add texture and layers,’ he says. ‘And pay attention to the small details. Focus on bedroom window treatments for a guest room to give it a high-end finish. ‘Hang your curtains from floor to ceiling regardless of the size of the windows,’ says Alison Lange. ‘This designer trick adds drama and elegance.’ 

‘Use quality curtain rods and hardware,’ she continues. ‘I recommend using heavier weight fabric like velvet to achieve an expensive look.’

7. Curate wall decor

Bedroom wall decor is as important for a guest bedroom as it is for a principal, adding individuality and style. For a look that’s expensive but costs less? 

‘Rather than filling walls with numerous pieces, choose one or two impactful artworks,’ suggests Artem Kropovinsky. ‘A thoughtfully selected, large-scale piece can set a luxurious tone, making the room feel like a private gallery.’

8. Choose an eye-catching mirror

A guest space is no place to be modest with bedroom mirror ideas. ‘Finish your space with an attention-grabbing wall mirror,’ says Amber Dunford. ‘Look for a mirror that boasts a bold, eye-catching shape like a sunburst frame with crystal details.’

Alison Lange agrees. ‘A statement mirror can add elegance and serve as a focal point,’ she says. ‘An opulent mirror can look expensive with actually being expensive.’

Consider, too, additional reflective surfaces, Amber Dunford recommends. ‘Use mirrored furniture to add depth and shine to the room. Mirrored nightstands and dressers create a multi-layered look that’s both chic and sophisticated,’ she says.

Bathroom rugs may not sound super practical but they are a huge interior design trend, and if you pick one like Gwenyth's that's a low pile and a practical shade, it just helps to soften all the clean lines and cooler tones that are synonymous with minimalist style. 

It's interior design 101. Mirrors can make a room look larger. Strategically place a mirror and it can instantly 'expand' the room, creating the illusion of more space and bringing in more light too. It's a super simple hack that everyone should make use of, no matter what size your room. 

So to pay homage to this old-school trick, and to remind everyone of the space-expanding effects a well-thought-out mirror can have, we asked designers for their easiest tips on where they position mirrors and how they decorate with mirrors to help make a room look larger. 

How to use mirrors to make a room look bigger

'Mirrors rank at the top of the list in the designer's bag of tricks!' says designer Joshua Smith. 'They definitely create some magic in an interior space by enhancing and reflecting light. They can be used to create the illusion of a window or reflect a design element. A fail-proof option is to hang a mirror to bring in more light to a room, but always pay attention to what will be in the mirror's reflection. It should be something pretty, like a light fixture.'

Designer Kathy Kuo agrees, 'Mirrors are one of the best ways to add light, depth, and an illusion of additional space to any room. My first piece of advice on adding mirrors to any room is to look at mirrors with a frame that matches your existing interior design style. If you match to your overall style and aesthetic, it'll be easy to incorporate mirrors into a gallery wall or add a larger one as a statement piece over a sofa or sideboard.'

Interior designers still swear by using mirrors to make a space feel loftier and lighter, but where are the best positions to really maximize this effect?

1. Use a well placed mirror to bring in more light

The more light a room has the larger it feels, and this is one of the main reasons mirrors are such an asset for making a small room look bigger. Position a mirror in the right spot and it can instantly reflect more light around the room. 

'When considering where to place a mirror, you'll want to take into account both practicality and aesthetics,' explains designer Victoria Holly. 'First, you can always place a larger mirror opposite a window, especially if you have a view. This helps reflect natural light and lets you see your view from all angles. It’s a great way to double your amount of natural light too.'

Designer Irene Gunter agrees, 'One of the remarkable qualities of a mirror is its ability to reflect the room back to itself, giving the impression that the space extends beyond its actual boundaries. This optical illusion works wonders when you place a mirror opposite a window, as it creates a visual extension of the view and makes the room feel much larger than it actually is.'

And if you aren't blessed with a large window, you can create a similar effect with artificial light. 'If you are dealing with a small and dark interior that lacks much natural light, consider hanging a mirror behind a pendant light or a chandelier to reflect artificial light.' adds Irene. 

2. Choose a large minimalist design for smaller rooms

When it comes to using mirrors to make a space feel bigger, you don't want to go too decorative. Keep the design relatively simple and go as large as the space can handle. Just consider the shape too, and what you want to achieve, a larger vertical mirror will give you height, whereas a horizontal design will give the illusion of more width. 

Irene Gunter says, 'Go large. Mirrors reflect light, instantly brightening up a room and creating a sense of openness. In small, dark spaces, don't be afraid to go oversized and choose a mirror that will reflect lots of light.'

'And if you want to create the illusion of height and make your walls appear longer consider installing a tall wall mirror. This clever trick not only adds visual interest but also accentuates the vertical lines in your space, enhancing the overall aesthetic.'

Designer Tom Rutt adds, 'An oversized wall or full-length mirror placed strategically is a stylish way to make a room appear bigger. The larger the mirror, the more light it will reflect, thus creating the illusion of depth and making a space appear larger. Choose a mirror with a narrow, simple frame as anything too decorative can overpower the space and have the reverse effect.'

3. Use floor mirrors to expand space and brighten a dark corner

Floor mirrors are ideal for expanding space as they create that instant illusion to a space beyond the room. Again, go big and take it floor to ceiling (or close to) to maximize the effect. And don't be afraid of placing furniture slightly in front or near the mirror, as seen in this dining room, you almost don't want the mirror to have too make breathing room and it's the reflection of furniture that can add to the optical allusion and create that room within a room effect. 

'Mirrors are a great source to reflect light and open up a space. They can make a room feel larger and brighter, so if a corner of your home is dark and feels cramped, a mirror is a brilliant solution,' explains Ginger Curtis, founder of Urbanology. 'We love large floor mirrors for the living room and bedrooms! Plus, they can be interchangeable based on the needs and dimensions of a room.'

4. Position a mirror above a focal point

Positioning a mirror above a focal point like a fireplace or a headboard is a natural choice, just make sure you get the positioning right. You want the mirror to still be at eye level, if you go too high, all you see in the mirror is the ceiling, and you won't get those space-expanding effects of seeing the whole room reflected. 

'We love adding a mirror over the fireplace in the living room. This allows the beautifully decorated room to be displayed in the mirror's reflections, seemingly expanding the space and acting as a piece of art on its own.' recommends Lauren Lerner, founder of Living with Lolo.

'Mirrors are not just decorative elements; they are transformative tools that can breathe life into interior spaces. When strategically placed, mirrors have the power to create the illusion of more space, making even the coziest of rooms feel open and inviting,' says Marie Flanigan. 'Additionally, their reflective surfaces capture and amplify natural light, infusing a sense of radiance and vitality into any design. Some of my favorite locations to place mirrors are on a fireplace surround, or above a focal point.'

5. Hang mirrors in transitional areas or opposite door ways

'Strategic placement can extend horizons. Positioning mirrors near room entrances or transitional areas can extend one's perception of the space,' explains designer Artem Kropovinsky.

'A really simple mirror placement that will help expand space is facing a doorway to tactically mask boundaries between rooms, elongating the eye-line to the successive space,' agrees design consultant Eleanor Taylor-Roberts.

This is such an easy way to expand a space like a narrow entryway, or any narrow room in fact. By positioning a mirror opposite a doorway of an adjoining room, you almost borrow space and light from that room too. Rather than reflecting the small dark room back into the mirror you instead get to glimpse at the larger, lighter rooms beyond. This space designer by Irene Gunter makes the point really clearly, the room seen in the entryway mirror is the large living room. And note how you almost get a piece of artwork in the entryway too, since it's reflected from the living room. Such a simple but effective idea. 

Mirrors add so much more to a space than decoration or a spot to check your appearance. A room without a mirror, no matter what the size can feel boxy, it's like you need that reflective surface to open up the room and give that boost of light. They can be such a simple way to make a room feel larger and loftier, and there are plenty of positions to do this based on your space and style too.
