'Designing outdoor spaces in New England means we absolutely have to consider seasonal flexibility. We want to create outdoor spaces that give our clients the most use – from day to night, summer to fall,' says Michelle Morgan Harrison.

Shade is the starting point. A slatted pergola or similar structure makes a space usable through the hottest part of the day, while still allowing some light through. 'In this particular project, we were careful to use materials that will weather well in harsh coastal conditions,' explains Sarah Henley of Henley Design. Teak and metals like powder-coated stainless steel that will not corrode in salt air were utilized in this project, as well as sturdy, color-fast outdoor performance fabrics. After durability, then we consider comfort and aesthetics.'

Rather than starting from an outdoor trend or a mood board, look at what's already there – the color of the water, the siding on the house, the vegetation along the property line – and build the palette outward from those tones. 'A palette of soft greens, coastal-inspired neutrals, and layered blues echoes the natural beauty of the landscape, drawing inspiration from the nearby water, sky, and kelp vegetation,' says designer Samantha Pappas of the outdoor area above. 'The effect is a space that feels like it grew out of its surroundings rather than one that was simply placed there.'

13. Consider the Impact of Sightlines

If your seating area is one part of a larger, zoned outdoor space, it's worth considering how the sightlines created by your furniture affect not just the flow of the space, but the flow of conversation. Turning a sofa or chair back toward an adjacent outdoor dining area can quietly cut off one group from another, even when there's no physical divider between them.

'We always like to avoid having the back of a sofa or chair to the dining space whenever possible, because it's less conversational and inviting,' explains Sarah Henley. 'We always think about the flow between drinks and apps before and after dinner in conjunction with the dining area, and having a connection between the two areas is important.'

14. For an Intimate Space, Lean on Chairs over Sofas

Chairs tend to win out over sofas when the goal is conversation – which was exactly the brief for the space above, designed by Annsley McAleer of Annsley Interiors and Lily Flatley. The covered porch serves as a seasonal gateway between the home and the pool beyond, meant to draw people in and keep them there.

Chairs are easier to reposition on the fly, which makes a space more adaptable for different group sizes, and they allow people to angle themselves toward each other. A sofa-heavy setup can look polished, but it often comes at the expense of flexibility and warmth. 'Chairs are easier to move around and naturally encourage conversation because people can angle themselves toward one another,' adds Sarah Cole.. 'Too many sofas can make an outdoor space feel rigid.'

15. Immerse Your Seating in the Landscape

Nature is the whole point of spending time outside, so don't underestimate the impact surrounding greenery can have on your outdoor seating area. It's not an afterthought –it's part of the design.

'This seating area was conceived as a quiet garden sanctuary, where comfortable furnishings are nestled amongst richly layered planting,' says Nick Woodhouse. If you can't site your seating area directly in a garden bed, try arranging large potted plants arranged around the perimeter, or planting a climbing vine along a trellis or pergola post. Even a single well-placed planter near a seating cluster can go a long way toward softening hard surfaces and connecting the space to the environment.

'Including plants is a must,' says Kristine Irving, Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors. 'Natural plantings soften the space and provide the oasis aspect your outdoor living room needs, so the landscape aspect is highly critical.'

The best outdoor seating areas don't happen by accident. They're the result of a few deliberate decisions made before the shopping starts: Choosing the right materials for the climate, setting a layout that supports how people actually move and talk, and integrating the surroundings through plantings and a color scheme. This summer, I'm on a mission to make my patio the most desirable place to hang out on my property. Bench-style seating invites everyone to squeeze in, get cozy, and come together over conversation and good food. Interior designer and founder of Rediger Design, Brittany Rediger, says, 'When you're working with a small terrace, bench seating is one of the smartest moves you can make. It doesn't require the same pull-out clearance as a chair, which immediately gives you more flexibility around the dining table. You can also seat three people on a bench in the same footprint that two chairs would occupy.'

It's not always the most comfortable if you're sitting for a while, though, so providing some cushions (like this long outdoor seat cushion from H&M Home) and blankets will make it feel more welcoming. As Brittany adds, 'The comfort concern is easy to solve. A good cushion changes everything, and layering in outdoor pillows and a throw softens the whole space without adding bulk.'

'An outdoor rug grounds the space the same way it would indoors. Natural materials and rich textures lend an organic, effortless feel, while layers of greenery soften the design and create a sense of abundance without overwhelming the eye.'

Clever landscaping is one way to make a small patio feel expensive. Splitting a square plot over different levels can help you to zone it into defined areas. Above, for example, the barbecue is on the lower level, while the seating area is slightly higher up, allowing the host to serve their guests easily, without everyone feeling on top of each other.

Hay Hwang Kitchin, co-founder of The Gardenists, explains, 'Level changes are one of the most effective tools we have in a small backyard, because they let you define separate areas without building walls that close the space down. This creates a natural sense of journey and gives each zone its own character, meaning that a modest footprint feels considered and generous rather than cramped.'

An effective way to maximize the space is by making the landscaping work harder. 'Steps and raised edges can double as casual seating and concealed storage, so every level earns its keep. Counterintuitively, dividing a small space well is what makes it feel bigger – it reads as a series of rooms rather than one tight square,' adds Hay.

The irregular paving and planting also add interest and a subtle border between the upper and lower levels. 'A shift in the paving material – or simply changing the direction it's laid – signals that you're moving from one space to another, and a band of planting acts as a soft, living threshold. It's a gentler way to zone a garden, and it ages far better than hard divisions,' Hay explains.

6. Choose Furniture That Blends in For the Illusion of Space

Colorful furniture is a big outdoor furniture trend for 2026, and this look both taps into that and serves the additional function of drawing the eye to the natural planting. The streamlined profile of the chairs and table is the perfect choice for this small terrace, while the leafy green hue blends in with the surrounding greenery so that it almost disappears into the background.

This 3-piece bistro set from Target is a great choice as it slots together neatly in a space-saving silhouette when not in use. Metal furniture is also a really practical choice for entertaining as it's wipe-clean and waterproof, so won't be damaged by any spills.

Lilly-Joan Richardson explains, 'Green powder-coated metal furniture has made a comeback in recent years and has become a popular choice. Its appeal lies in its ability to blend effortlessly into a garden setting without overwhelming the space. The design is equally important; many pieces have a light, open structure rather than a solid appearance, helping to create an airy and uncluttered feel. The result is a cohesive look that helps tie the entire garden together.'

7. Make it Warm and Intimate with Mood Lighting

However small your space, knowing how to plan outdoor lighting can be totally transformative. In the above example, the small terrace with its high wall could feel a little oppressive; however the addition of warm lighting behind the artificial living wall feature brings an amber glow and an almost tropical vibe to the space.

'In a small outdoor space, lighting does more than almost any planting choice,' explains Hay Hwang Kitchin. 'It's what turns a daytime terrace into somewhere you actually want to be after dark. We avoid flat overhead light entirely and layer it instead: warm uplighters grazing the trees and living wall to catch texture and throw soft shadow; low glows along the seating and steps, all on dimmable circuits, so the space can shift from a working light to a candlelit mood in seconds.' Hay adds, 'Keeping the color temperature warm – around 2700K, and concealing the fittings makes it feel intimate rather than functional.' Wicker outdoor furniture is having a revival this summer, and if your set is authentically vintage, you are even more on trend. Like with so many things, the best styles are steeped in history and patina. But there's a difference between weatherworn and gracefully aged when it comes to embracing the wicker outdoor furniture trend, and the secret lies in one easily overlooked thing – how you clean it.

'Vintage wicker is often made from natural rattan, rush, or willow rather than the synthetic resin wicker used in modern outdoor furniture nowadays, so cleaning methods should be different as natural wicker is vulnerable to excess moisture,' advises Samantha-Jane Agbontaen, Interior Designer and Founder of House Designer. 'It can warp, crack, loosen joints, and grow mould if it gets too wet.'

Whether you're thrifting rattan furniture or you've been holding on to an old set that needs some love, cleaning vintage patio wicker is all about care and careful consideration.

1. Remove Dirt and Dust

'Both natural and painted wicker can be cleaned in a similar manner. You start by removing any dirt or dust with either a vacuum fitted with a brush attachment (like these Soft Bristle Round Brushes from Amazon) or a dry microfiber cloth,' explains KC Collins of Chair King Backyard Store.

2. Gently Wipe Down with Warm Water

It's all about taking things slowly when caring for your patio wicker, so once the dust has gone, it's time to bring in the soapy water. Dab your cloth (use a finely woven cloth to ensure you don't scratch the surface of your wicker) and wipe.

'Once all the dust has been removed, add a small amount of dish soap to warm water and apply to the furniture with a damp microfiber rag,' continues KC. 'It’s important not to use too much water. The rag should be damp, not soaked.'

3. Steer Clear of the Hose

While it might be tempting to use a hose, it's best to clean your wicker by hand to prevent any cracking, warping, or snapping. 'Using anything with pressure, such as a hose or pressure washer, could be damaging,' says Samantha-Jane. 'It's perhaps the worst thing you could do as it could damage the weave.'

4. Clean Away Soap With a Soft Rag

'If you want to gently clean your wicker furniture, you'll have to do it by hand,' agrees Rafi Friedman, President of Coastal Luxury Outdoors. 'Water with a bit of dish soap is strong enough to get most dirt off, but gentle enough not to damage the rattan or strip the paint. For especially tough dirt, try putting some of this solution in a spray bottle (these Amazon Leakproof Spray Bottles are a great example) and spraying down the furniture. Let it sit for several minutes, then wipe it with a soft rag. For especially tough spots, a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush can work well.'

5. Allow to Airdry

Once you've washed away your soap residue with water, pat your furniture with a cloth to soak up excess moisture and proceed to let your furniture air-dry in the fresh air. 'Natural wicker becomes flexible when wet, so be sure to let it completely dry before sitting,' says KC. The beauty of this vintage furniture trend is its age and story, so to ensure your set stands the test of time, it's best to approach cleaning with caution rather than haste.

In summer 2026, if it’s not chrome, I don’t want it – a tricky proposition when we’re all living outdoors. I’d accepted that my chrome obsession would remain confined to the living room, kitchen, and dining table – seashell caviar servers and whatnot – until IKEA quietly dropped a weatherproof silver portable lamp that’s letting me take what is, in my opinion, the coolest look of the season onto my balcony.

And this new IKEA launch costs just $30. Officially, IKEA calls the finish polished nickel, but outdoors, this is about as close as we’re getting to that mirror-like chrome effect without worrying about the elements. Frankly, I didn’t think it was possible.

One reviewer calls it their (very chic) insurance policy against the near-inevitability of a summer power outage. ‘I already have similar lights that cost so much more, so when I saw this one for the price, I purchased two,’ they write. ‘They are nice and heavy and give great light.’

Another reason I’m paying attention? The designer: Carl Öjerstam, one of IKEA’s most celebrated talents, whose 1990s KARLSKRONA rattan lounge chair regularly resells for thousands on the secondhand market. If history repeats itself, this little lamp might prove to be more than just a good summer buy.

Chrome has largely stopped at the patio door, for obvious reasons. But if IKEA has figured out how to make a mirror-like finish that isn’t afraid of a summer storm, I have a feeling this is only the beginning.

The truth is, few people want to commit to such an expense, nor do they want to wait that long for an outdoor kitchen. We crave instant gratification, and a modular outdoor kitchen is the closest design we can get to that. Plus, modular designs have become just as luxurious and high-end.

'The market has matured enormously,' says Adam Arya, co-founder of Arya Douge. 'A few years ago, the choice was fairly limited, whereas today there are incredibly sophisticated modular systems that can be tailored to the way you actually live and entertain.'

'These include durable, weather-resistant work surfaces, integrated refrigeration and storage, and a sink for convenience, all arranged in a logical workflow to make cooking outdoors effortless and enjoyable,' he explains, adding that you need to make key layout considerations, including whether you wish to face guests as you cook, have the sink hidden from view, and if you want to include bar seating as well as a more formal dining set up.

Outdoor kitchens are the hub of cooking, so really think about the materials you are choosing, both aesthetically and in terms of durability. 'For outdoor cooking, materials need to be durable and easy to clean,' says Karen.

'Stainless steel is a great choice for countertops and cooking areas as it’s hygienic and resistant to rust. Powder-coated or galvanized steel also helps create sturdy, weather-ready frames, while pre-treated acacia wood adds warmth and a natural look while protecting against weather, stains, and wear.'

If you desire the flexibility of an outdoor kitchen island that can be moved when you require more floor space, a portable design fits in beautifully with a modular scheme – it also allows you to move the island between outdoor living spaces if you need it to double as an outdoor bar or poolside snack station. 'One of the biggest mistakes people make is placing a kitchen in full afternoon sun. Whether it's a pergola, canopy, or carefully positioned planting, creating a shaded preparation area while allowing the dining space to enjoy the evening light transforms how comfortable-and how frequently-the space is used,' suggests Adam.

6. Do the Prep for Food Service and Cleanup

It's easy to feel overwhelmed if you're hosting a lot of people, but the key is in the prep – if you've put in the work before the guests arrive, you'll be able to actually enjoy the party when it comes. That includes ensuring food is all but ready (bar the final touches, or a quick warm-up in the oven), drinks are chilled and mixed, the grill is clean and tools accessible, and plates and glassware are ready-to-go.

'The secret to enjoying your own party is doing the work before anyone arrives,' says Joseph Marini, event designer and author of Mastering the Art of Entertaining (SparkPress/Simon & Schuster). 'A host who’s still mixing drinks and plating food when the doorbell rings spends the gathering in the kitchen instead of with their guests. A little preparation buys you the thing you actually want, which is to be present.'

Finally, having a plan for dirty dishes, glassware, and trash as you go along (putting out accessible and stylish trash cans for guests to use, for example), will cut your cleanup time dramatically so you won't feel burnt out at the end of the night.

Set the Stage Before Guests Arrive

'Entertaining well comes down to a pre-preparation plan, from staging your hosting space to organizing your kitchen. Every staged area, whether the kitchen or a buffet table, needs room to work,' says Joseph.

'Even a small kitchen can be zoned ahead of time: one area for cold prep, one for staging hot food, and one for clearing dirties. Keep Drinks Well Stocked and Food Fresh

After all the hard work prepping delicious food for your guests, the last thing you'll want is for it to go cold before serving or spoil in the heat. 'Oven space is usually the bottleneck, so a restaurant-style chafing dish is always in my arsenal for keeping food warm behind the scenes,' shares Joseph.

'For cold food, keep an oversized cooler on hand and line the bottom with 6 to 8 inches of ice. I use round deli containers in quart and pint sizes for salads, dips, and the like, and tuck them right into the ice. Here’s the trick: number each lid, then number the platter or dish it will go into at serving time, so you’re never pulling containers out to guess what’s inside.' You might also want to keep a separate large coolbox outside, ready to top up the drinks station when needed, so you don't have to keep running to the fridge indoors for refills.

'Building a menu that can be served entirely at room temperature is another good way to take the pressure off,' adds Joseph. 'I also set out food on larger platters, so I’m not constantly refreshing them.'

Get the Grill Zone Ready

If you're planning on cooking on one of the best grills, the last thing you want is to open the lid and find it's not been cleaned properly from the last use, so allow plenty of time to clean your grill before you need to get the food sizzling.

Making sure that all of your grilling tools and accessories, such as aprons, charcoal (if using), spare gas cans, and dishes to serve into once the food is cooked (plus aluminum foil for keeping it warm), are close at hand will help things go smoothly. And, placing a folding table will provide extra space for tools and dishes so that you won't be fumbling around for space when the food is ready to come off the grill.

Good atmosphere engages all of the senses, from scent to sound. Choosing the right playlist can really set the tone for your gathering – and make sure it's not so loud that it hinders conversation. Remote-controlled speakers give you flexibility to adjust the volume from afar and ensure they're placed at a slight distance from key gathering zones.

Easy floral displays can bring a natural feel to your event – place them on the main table as well as on drinks stations and side tables – and can mirror the garden and bring color and scent. 'I layer a table the way I layer a room – scent, texture, light, sound, all working quietly together,' says Bryan. 'Flowers cut from the garden that morning, never anything that looks flown in. And music is the architecture of the evening – set it at the volume of a good rumor: present enough that no one fears a silence, quiet enough that no one raises their voice.'

Providing a comfortable and inviting area where your guests can make themselves at home and keep warm as the evening chill starts to bite will make sure they linger, and can often end up being the best part of the party.

'A fire pit does half my work for me,' says Bryan. 'People arrange themselves around flame the way they have for ten thousand years; no seating plan required.'

'Keep the schedule loose,' suggests Bryan. 'The best evenings have one fixed point – dinner – and everything else is allowed to drift.' And if the majority of the work is done in advance, you should be able to attend your own party stress-free. 'The host’s job is to design the gathering, then disappear into it,' adds Bryan.

Providing self-serve food that guests can keep going back to throughout the evening, rather than sitting down to a formal dinner, will keep things flexible and manage expectations. 'Sharing plates over plated courses, always,' advises Bryan. 'Passing a dish is the oldest form of conversation. The goal is for guests to feel they’ve discovered the evening rather than attended it.'

You've sorted the food, drinks, and styling touches, but there are a few not-so-glamorous but equally essential items that hosts wouldn't be without for any gathering. Make this your last-minute checklist to ensure your event goes without a hitch.

'We envisioned this area as an intimate outdoor dining room – one that feels nestled within the landscape rather than separate from it,' explains Elle Slater of Tyler Slater Studio, the firm behind the space above. 'The bluestone patio was intentionally chosen as a quiet, understated foundation, allowing the pergola and surrounding greenery to remain the focal point.'

Elle and her team then suspended globe-style outdoor pendant lights from the pergola. This works to underscore the feeling of an outdoor room, but also to extend the use of the space well into the evening. To finish off the space, LS Home Staging & Interiors selected clean-lined dining furnishings that keep the look unfussy and let the architecture speak for itself.

'The weathered teak matches the natural gray and cool-brown tones of the granite stonework and weathered stainless steel,' she explains. Hilarie also suggests avoiding plastic or painted finishes, which tend to fade in the sun.

There aren't quite as many opportunities for decorative touches outdoors as there are inside, so if you want to add a little style to your space, choose dining tables and chairs that can carry the whole aesthetic. Designer Lindsey Crowley, who also owns the home above, demonstrates this with a pairing of woven, textural dining chairs and a streamlined marble dining table.

'The marble tabletop will naturally patina over time, adding character and depth, while standing up to New England's harsh winters,' she explains. 'The sculptural backs of the dining chairs introduce a strong design element, proving that outdoor furniture can be as intentionally design-driven as indoor furnishings.' The result, she says, is an intentional visual balance – and a space that feels personal and deliberate.

An elevated dining setup like Lindsey's is almost always the result of mixing and matching a table and chairs, so bypass the matching set and go for something complementary instead.

One of the easiest ways to determine where to site an outdoor dining table is to find the best view, then build around it. Scale, proportion, and proximity to the kitchen all matter, but so does giving diners something worth looking at, and highlighting your landscape.

'We positioned the dining terrace to take full advantage of the property's beautiful stone wall, which provides a timeless backdrop and a natural sense of enclosure,' says Nick Woodhouse, creative director of gardens at Woodhouse & Law. 'Layered planting and trailing greenery soften the masonry, making the space feel welcoming and more contemporary.'

7. Enhance Function (and Privacy) with Storage

A well-designed outdoor dining space should be just as easy to use as it is to look at, and outdoor storage is a big part of that equation. The built-in cabinets in the space above are a good example of how a practical element can add to aesthetics, too, providing a warm counterpoint to the steel pergola and metal furniture while keeping dining essentials within arm's reach.

'Having a place nearby for cushions, serving pieces, grilling tools, or outdoor tableware can make a significant difference in how frequently the space gets used,' says Robert Walker of CLC Custom Builders. 'Here, the storage cabinets also provide privacy from neighbors in this tight urban setting.'

Freestanding outdoor storage cabinets, or a dedicated storage space right inside the closet door, can offer similar convenience.

8. Take a Style Cue from the Surroundings

When it comes to choosing the style of your furnishings and decor for an outdoor dining space, the best place to start is by looking around. Your plantings, the architectural style of your home, and the other features of your backyard can all provide design cues for your furniture. In this shrouded garden dining area, the bohemian chairs and dainty accents add to the overall sense of whimsy.

'We designed this dining space to be completely immersed in the garden, with the table positioned beneath the canopy of mature trees for natural shade and atmosphere,' says Nick Woodhouse. 'Surrounded by soft planting, the table becomes the natural gathering point, with views through to the fireside area beyond, creating a beautiful sense of depth and connection across the garden.'

9. Go for a Restrained Palette with Plenty of Details

A restrained palette that ties into the colors of the surrounding architecture lets the dining furniture blend with the background when not in use, but the silhouette and details make it anything but boring.

Here, designer Justine Sterling keeps the color quiet – white, concrete, natural linen – and lets form and texture carry the interest instead. The intricate rope chairs are a design choice in their own right, and the layered details on the table reinforce that same sensibility: woven mats, scalloped tableware, and animal-print outdoor cushions that only reveal themselves once you pull out a chair.

'Clean, yet full of warmth, and a little unexpected seemed fitting for this patio in coastal New England,' says Justine. 'Our stylish client was open to a fresh approach to the furnishings. We mixed sculptural white rope chairs with a concrete-colored table with a curvilinear base. The blue animal-print cushions are a sweet surprise when you pull out the chair.'

The one thing about creating a beautiful dining space outdoors? It'll become the go-to spot for gatherings with your inner circle. When it comes to decorating for such an occasion, your own backyard is your best resource.

'One of my favorite ways to style an outdoor dining table is with a large vase filled with clippings from the surrounding landscape,' says Cara Fineman of DAG Design. 'In this project, we used branches clipped from nearby trees as the centerpiece. Not only does it create a beautiful, substantial focal point within the scale of this pavilion, but it also establishes a strong connection between the dining space and its natural surroundings.'

It's also important to consider your natural surroundings from a practical standpoint when styling. 'Wind, in particular, can quickly become a challenge, so it's important to select accessories that have enough weight and stability to stay in place,' explains Cara. 'I tend to favor larger vessels, substantial serving pieces, and natural materials that can withstand outdoor conditions while still creating a layered, inviting summer tablescape.'

Outdoor furniture takes a beating, so sun, rain, salt air, and temperature swings will expose any material that isn't up to the job. 'Teak remains a favorite because it's durable, develops a beautiful patina over time, and works across a variety of design styles,' says Galen Haas Kirby of Haas Design. 'Powder-coated marine-grade aluminum is another excellent option for contemporary spaces because it's lightweight, weather-resistant, and low maintenance – important that it is marine-grade aluminum if designing in coastal settings.'

Your dining setup doesn't have to blend into its surroundings, and sometimes the most effective approach is when it doesn't. In a garden with lots of greenery or dense hedging, white or light-toned furniture creates a contrast that makes it stand out, creating a design moment from something that might otherwise be absorbed into the landscape.

'The vintage-style white metal furniture was chosen to brighten the shaded corner and create a beautiful contrast against the deep green backdrop,' says Nick Woodhouse of the space he designed, above. 'The woven basket stocked with cushions nearby is a practical touch that adds texture without competing with the palette, and makes it easy to stay comfortable as the temperature drops.'

13. Consider Proximity to the Kitchen

It might not seem like a big deal to walk a few extra paces between the kitchen and your outdoor dining area, but nearly every designer we spoke to agreed that the closer your dining table is to the kitchen, the better. When you're ferrying hot dishes, running back for condiments, or clearing plates between courses, those extra steps add up quickly – and the friction of an inconvenient layout is usually what turns a well-designed outdoor space into one that rarely gets used.

'This sophisticated kitchen seamlessly opens to a screened outdoor porch, creating a true indoor-outdoor living experience,' says its designer, Rachel Reider. 'Expansive folding glass doors create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces, allowing family life and entertaining to flow effortlessly from the kitchen to the outdoor dining and lounge areas.'

14. Don't Forget Lighting

Outdoor lighting is a must for a dining space that functions after dark. In the space above, designer Sarah Scales added a pair of sconces to the wall of the outdoor kitchen, and there's a fan with a light overhead too. If you don't have the ability to hardwire fixtures, freestanding light sources work just as well.

'Outdoor lighting is a must, and it’s totally fine if you don’t have the opportunity for anything hardwired,' says Sarah. 'Portable lamps and, at times, strand lights are nice.' One key with outdoor lighting? Don't overdo it. There's a good chance you need less than you think.

While outdoor dining doesn't always mean formality, that's not to say you want your summer tablescape to look cheap and lacklustre. In fact, no matter your occasion, there are some age-old mistakes best avoided, as they always make an outdoor table look thrown together (and not in the oh-so-effortless way you want to achieve).

'The biggest mistake you can make in outdoor tablescapes is approaching it the same way you would a formal indoor tablescape,' explains wedding and event planner Hovik Harutyunyan of Harutyunyan Events. 'You want the design of the table to complement the outdoor setting rather than compete or clash with it.'

1. Disposable Everything – Invest in Chic Outdoor-Safe Tableware

Unsurprisingly, disposable tableware almost always makes a backyard dining set-up look cheap. You wouldn't use plastic cups or paper plates in your dining room, so they should be left out of your alfresco eating area, too. Instead, invest in reusable outdoor-friendly tableware that you can bring out year after year and looks as chic as your indoor crockery.

'The quickest way to make an outdoor table look cheap is to treat it as the throwaway version of an indoor one,' explains Laetitia Laurent, founder of Laure Nell Interiors. 'Paper napkins, plastic cups...things like using a thin plastic cloth. People tell themselves, 'It's just outside,' and the table looks like it. Almost everything that reads as expensive outdoors comes down to real materials, plus a little layering, and neither one has to be expensive.'

'But they should be quality,' continues Laetitia. 'My French father has a great saying, 'You have to be really rich to buy cheap things'. What he means here is that low-quality items don't last, so you have to keep buying them over and over. This applies well to a tablescape – if you invest in a few quality pieces (many interchangeable for different seasons/settings), in the long run, you'll likely save money rather than continuing to buy low-quality, disposable items that have the added negative of just looking cheap.'

2. Not Layering – Build Up Your Tablescape for Interest

The best outdoor dining tables are layered. 'From a designer, things I like to avoid for outdoor table settings would be placing any plates directly onto the table,' explains Rasha Rizwan, interior designer at Mackenzile Collier Interiors. 'You should always layer them with a placemat or tablecloth,' adds Rasha. 'Layering with textured linens or even natural materials like woven rattan tableware can add texture and visual interest. Making the space feel more elevated.'

'The formality level of such pieces can also look a bit out of place or 'try-hard' if the event formality doesn't call for it – the true exception would be for formal outdoor weddings or black-tie events,' adds Hovik. 'You don't want the setting to feel overly complicated for guests.'

Whether you're having an alfresco lunch or an intimate dinner, outdoor-friendly glassware is your best bet. 'For an elevated and curated outdoor tablescape, it's better to opt for selections of colored glassware and unusually printed or colored china,' says Rae McCalmont, director at PBF Homes. 'Colored glassware adds a sense of whimsy and looks beautiful as the evening progresses and the table lighting illuminates the colors across the table. The biggest key is to keep the setting feeling layered, elevated, and fun!'

4. Too Much Stuff – You Want a Table to Look Full But Never Cluttered

While it's important to cover the basics and ensure your table has all the fundamental pieces, you don't want to overdo it either (particularly if you've gone for a statement outdoor furniture trend).

'While you want to make sure the table design is not underwhelming or empty, you also don't want the opposite of having it feel too overwhelming or cluttered,' explains Hovik. 'I would really caution against an eclectic mix of small objects and knick-knacks that can feel visually messy or like you're hosting a garage sale. You really just need a few beautiful floral pieces combined with candles. Even a runner of just candles down the table can feel understated yet tastefully dramatic and elegant.'

Rasha suggests, 'Mixing materials.' She explains, 'Using too many plastic pieces can make the tablescape feel less intentional, so I recommend adding a mix of stoneware or ceramic, mixed with linen napkins to create more texture and visual weight.'

5. Too Small a Centerpiece – You Need a Strong Focal Point

'I often hear the notion that 'if the outdoor setting is beautiful, you really don't need many florals on the table.' I could NOT disagree more,' says Hovik. 'While a beautiful outdoor setting or mountain/ocean views can be the star of the show, using small centerpieces (or no centerpieces at all) will truly make the table seem underwhelming and empty.'

'In fact, outdoor settings often call for even more pronounced centerpieces,' adds Hovik, 'because you often don't have chandeliers, walls, or artwork that complements the table. Thus, having a bare or under-decorated table can really make the table feel neglected or forgotten.'

'Incorporate wildflowers for a garden party or earthy tones that complement the landscaping,' adds Rasha. 'I also love bringing in natural elements like a simple stem arrangement in a vase, seasonal floral arrangements, or potted herbs to keep the table feeling natural and fresh.'

If there’s one mistake I see small outdoor-space owners making often, it’s having too big a bistro table. Despite sounding slightly oxymoronic (aren’t they supposed to be small?), many still come topped with full-sized round or square surfaces that sneakily monopolize your already-limited real estate. The solution? Cut it in half.
