If I had to choose a favorite kitchen style, it would be the rather cool and laid-back modern classic aesthetic. The same relaxed design that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have in their family kitchen. It is a kitchen style that will transcend interior trends.

The modern classic look is appealing because it is easy and comforting. Easy because nothing is too perfect, so signs of life don’t spoil the aesthetic, which is what can happen with a super-slick, contemporary kitchen. Easy also because, in the right setting, it has a quality that won’t date. So, if you invest in a well-made version, it should last for as long as you need it to. It is comforting because it feels reassuringly familiar.

A post shared by Portia de Rossi (@portiaderossi)

A photo posted by on

Shop the look

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>Timeless

Large Serving Platter – 3 Count

This classic set of three serving platters is not only beautiful and timeless, but it is also microwave-safe and will please even the fussiest guest.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>Editor's favorite

Luana Bowl

Embracing classic simplicity, interior designer Shea McGee's Luana Bowl blends a modern neutral palette with a traditional glazed stoneware construction. This interior design style isn't a new kitchen trend by any means, but it's an aesthetic that has endured, and for good reason. It doesn't matter if you don't actually live in California like Degeneres and de Rossi, or on the coast. This aesthetic is all about embracing indoor-outdoor living, seamlessly blending aesthetics that lean coastal, rustic, and modern all in one.

'This easy-breezy style instantly transports you to sunny days, warm seas, and plenty of indoor-outdoor connections,' explains Mollie Ranize, lead interior designer and founder at Dmar Interiors. 'It invites you to kick your shoes off and sit anywhere because nothing is precious and everything is to be enjoyed with family and friends. It's a room that accommodates children and pets and has a timeless, welcoming quality.'

This is not a pretentious style, it was designed to be the center of family life – the true heart of the home.

Ellen Degeneres's dining room is trailblazing one of the biggest design trends of 2025, organic modern. The talk show host's space embodies the natural materials, clean lines, and minimalist bent of the style. Though we've discussed the mogul's real estate portfolio at length, this might be our favorite.

Degeneres took to Instagram to share a picture of her kittens and farmer's market oranges in her dining room, but we were looking at the background. The comedian's space incorporates a natural wood bench softened with a textural beige cushion. Her farmhouse table is also made of wood but in a completely different stain for a delicious contrast. The whole thing is accented with a light gray wall at the back.

What is the organic modern interior design trend? Jodi Peterman, Principal Designer at Elizabeth Erin Designs, states: 'The organic modern trend blends natural elements with luxurious touches to create a harmonious and sophisticated aesthetic. At its core, organic luxe embraces the beauty of natural materials such as wood, stone, and linen, complemented by plush textures, metallic accents, and elegant finishes. This style celebrates the raw beauty of organic materials while infusing spaces with a sense of refinement.

A post shared by Ellen DeGeneres (@ellendegeneres)

A photo posted by on

She continues, 'Picture rooms adorned with live-edge wooden furniture, marble countertops, soft wool rugs, and shimmering metallic light fixtures, all coming together to evoke a serene yet upscale atmosphere. This trend ties closely to biophilic design, which seeks to connect interiors with the natural world, enhancing the well-being and comfort of those who inhabit the space.'

Why is the organic modern look so popular? It is, in part, to do with the endless search for an interior design. Pam Hutter, principal architect at the Chicago-based sustainable design firm Hutter Architects, says, 'Homeowners want spaces that feel sophisticated yet natural. Organic modern appeals because natural materials like wood, stone, and reclaimed materials are timeless. My clients often request wood accents, stone fireplaces, and reclaimed wood flooring, which provide warmth and character.'

An organic modern kitchen, in the style of Ellen Degeneres's dining room (Image credit: Christina Kim Interior Design)

A contemporary focus on sustainable design bolsters the interest in these materials. Peterman tells Homes & Gardens: 'Organic modern aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-conscious living, as it often involves using renewable resources and embracing craftsmanship.

Homeowners also love Ellen's mood-boosting design look's positive psychological benefits. 'Organic modern appeals to those seeking a balanced and calming environment amidst the fast-paced modern world,' says Peterman. Peterman advises: 'To recreate the organic modern look in your own home, focus on incorporating natural wood and luxurious lighting. Start by selecting furniture pieces and decor items made from reclaimed or sustainably sourced wood with a natural finish. Consider adding a statement piece like a live-edge dining table or a wooden bed frame to anchor the room. Pair these elements with luxurious lighting fixtures such as chandeliers, pendant lights, or sleek floor lamps featuring metallic or glass accents. Opt for lighting designs that emit a warm and inviting glow, creating a cozy ambiance.'

She continues, 'For a cohesive look, balance the textures and materials throughout the space. Integrate soft textiles like linen or velvet for upholstery, throw pillows, and curtains to add warmth and comfort. Incorporate touches of metallic finishes in hardware, mirrors, and decorative accents. Finally, natural elements such as potted plants, fresh flowers, or botanical artwork should be brought in to emphasize the organic theme further and create a serene retreat, reflecting the principles of biophilic design.'

Whether you style an organic modern dining table like Ellen, or choose to design a whole room around the trend, timeless, sustainable design is always worth it. Degeneres and DiRossi's space is just a jumping-off point.

Living room corners are rife with decorating opportunities. Our love of nooks and cozy corners may be due to the feeling of safety or comfort they offer. Most of us shy away from sitting in the middle and would choose the edge, but we could instead make the space in the middle better by creating small nooks and pockets.

While it can be tempting to leave an empty corner vacant, you would be surprised at how easy it can be to decorate this unloved space elegantly. This is something that TV host Ellen DeGeneres and actor Portia de Rossi know all too well and always ensure to capitalize on when decorating their many homes.

If you're stuck for living room corner ideas, make like DeGeneres and de Rossi by introducing statement art for a corner that truly sings. A wise investment in pieces you love brings pleasure, and beauty to your home and the prospect of rich returns, both aesthetically and often monetary.

A post shared by William Abranowicz (@wabranowicz)

A photo posted by on

Designed by Jane Hallworth of Hallworth, the striking art installation in this home is quite the statement. However, there are plenty of ways to decorate with art to introduce visual interest to unused corners.

Art is the most powerful tool in any room and sets the tone. Furniture doesn’t necessarily last forever, whereas art is often passed down through the generations.

'Think about your art right from the beginning,' says Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby. 'I find it works badly if it’s used as an afterthought as it just doesn’t sing in the same way.'

'People get intimidated when buying art and don’t know how to choose. Head that off at the start and integrate it from day one and then through every review of the design you’re looking at everything in the context of the art.'

'I like the main starting point to be dynamic. That isn’t to say it has to be vibrant and bold, there just needs to be a lot going on. Quieter art is better layered in once you’ve found the main event.'

Designer Rachel Chudley also believes that working with art can make a difference in a neglected corner space.

'I would never advise acquiring art to match an interior, but I would also say that an art collection should be an extension of your personality, as should an interior. It should bring joy – I really believe that living with art makes people happier.'

If you're not an art collector, shelving is a fantastic alternative. Living room shelving is a great way to add extra storage space to an underused or bland living room corner.

Open shelving can create a real statement – it is both useful and beautiful. It is also more economical than a fully enclosed storage unit, especially in a compact room. It is particularly suited to small recesses in areas such as either side of a chimney breast or corner space, helping to enhance and correct uneven proportions visually.

There are a multitude of things you can put in the corner of a living room – the possibilities are endless.

Shop the look

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Upholstered Barrel Chair

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Bodene Round Black Resin Coffee Table

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Ceramic Fruit Bowl

In the latest unexpected pairing (that's brought us new levels of joy), Jeremiah Brent has unofficially crossed with The White Lotus – to pair characters with spaces he's previously designed.

'Yes, it seems like I have too much time on my hands, but also, I just think it's super fun personality-wise to see it translated in the space,' Jeremiah comments – and of course, we're inclined to agree.

The designer, who founded his eponymous firm with locations in Los Angeles and New York City, has curated some of the world's best homes – but three, in particular, best align with Tanya, Portia, and Harper from the aforementioned show.

A post shared by JEREMIAH BRENT (@jeremiahbrent)

A photo posted by on

'First would definitely be Tanya, a fan-favorite and a personal favorite of mine. [She] stresses me out so much, but I always think about this bar that I designed for her. It's open and grand. There are these dramatic curved sofas, and it's a bar,' Jeremiah Brent 'ays. 'The whole space is centered around coming together and having a good time, which is so 'Tanya.'

And it would seem Tanya has good taste. The whole space radiates a level of chicness, but the curvy sofa is particularly on trend for 2024 (after already shaping the way we decorated last year).

'These become popular in the design world due to their ability to introduce organic forms,' adds Olson + Baker's design expert James Scaife. 'Unlike traditional straight-lined sofas, their curved silhouette adds softness and fluidity to the room. These curves bring dynamic energy and visual interest, creating a welcoming ambiance.'

To get the look (in a way that would surely impress Tanya), we're opting for this curvy sofa, designed by Leanne Ford below.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

                    1
Hugger Curved Boucle Sofa

Created by esteemed designer Leanne Ford, this curved sofa is the perfect kidney bean shape, so sought-after by designers. That reminds me of her.'

We can remind ourselves of these characters' quirks (or enjoy the series for the first time) by watching the series via Amazon Prime.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are no strangers to flawless style. Their property portfolio is one of the most impressive we've ever seen, and this time, it is their timeless dining space that has piqued our keen design eye.

Dining areas should have a special ambiance, whether for cozy lunches or elegant dinner parties. For this reason, it is worth paying extra special attention to current dining room trends to help set the scene for jubilant fine dining.

For a dining room to earn its keep, it has to not only work hard but also look beautiful – and that requires careful curating, especially when it comes to choosing a stunning color scheme and furniture. Investing in classic interior design trends, similar to those in Ellen DeGeneres's green dining room, will continue to impress year after year.

Here's why designers, decorators, and color experts alike all adore decorating with green and using timber furniture; two decorating ideas that continue to endure.

A post shared by William Abranowicz (@wabranowicz)

A photo posted by on

1. Dark green

Dark botanical tones work with most shades to create rooms that are harmonious and easy to live with. Dark green is in general a calming and relaxing color. Being the color that represents nature, it’s one that makes us feel good and positive.

‘The poet and philosopher Goethe used to describe green as a useful color, a good color to have around,’ explains Francesca Wezel, founder of Francesca’s Paints. ‘Dark green is often used in traditional gentlemen’s clubs and libraries, goes well with wood and is a color that stimulates concentration and deep thinking. Dark green is a perfect tone for the dining room, as it is bold and calming at the same time.'

When choosing color combinations for rooms, Francesca adds, look to nature for inspiration. We love pairing dark green with other neutrals, such as taupe, beige, sand and stone, for a timeless quality that will last beyond the season.

‘I use a lot of dark green because it is very inviting,’ says interior designer Sarah Vanrenen. ‘I also love decorating with a heritage dark green. I don’t think space is a barrier to going bold – don’t be put off by using strong colors in even the smallest spaces and use it on all four walls. The effect is dramatic and green works with so many other incredible colors, too.’

2. Wood furniture

Another way to plan and design a space that will surpass all current trends is to decorate with wood. Timber, a material found in nature, is a wonderful way to add character, texture and plenty of warmth.

The importance of sustainability will see many consumers move away from fast furniture and invest in designs that can truly stand the test of time, and the use of wood furniture will be at the forefront of upcoming innovations.

Old or new, pale or dark, the warm and tactile nature of timber ensures it enhances any home – not to mention the fact wood gets better with age. The natural beauty of wood, combined with its strength and resilience, makes it ideal for all kinds of furniture. It makes the material ideal when considering ceiling ideas for your fifth wall, too.

Shop the dining room furniture edit

In recent years, there have been several new and interesting techniques that have reinvigorated wood furniture and made this old staple a modern favorite.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are certainly no strangers to the real estate industry, but their Southern Italian-style home in Montecito is the latest of their properties to enter the market. This comes only four months after the couple paid $22.5 million for the estate in June before putting their famous renovation skills to work. It's now listed for $46.5 million.

Named Pompeiian Court, the century-old home (built in 1919) spans eight acres behind a large iron gate and a quarter-mile-long driveway that flows into a 'classic Roman courtyard residence.'

Exhibiting the best of Italian style, both in its architecture and interior design, the home is said to embody 'the spirit of quiet luxury', according to the listing. 'The residence, grounds, and additional structures offer a series of experiences with spaces that stand on their own yet seamlessly meld into a cohesive lifestyle unlike any other,' the description reads.

A post shared by Riskin Partners Estate Group (@riskinpartners)

A photo posted by on

Located in lower San Ysidro, the property is a piece of serenity amid Montecito's buzz. This begins with the courtyard, with a central water feature that epitomizes the Californian indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Much like the other historic mansions in the area, the home is one single-story, meaning almost every room opens out to the mountainous outdoors.

Other stand-out rooms include the eat-in kitchen that overlooks the state’s 'oldest resident,' an ancient, architecturally significant oak tree. The space has striking black cabinets that juxtapose the rustic white walls and floating shelves decorated with jugs and cutlery.

A post shared by Riskin Partners Estate Group (@riskinpartners)

A photo posted by on

The living spaces continue this neutral color palette while showcasing more architectural assets that pay homage to its 104-year-old heritage. These include the original wood floors, several fireplaces, and vaulted and beamed ceiling cathedral ceilings. There are also three sets of French doors that open onto a south-facing terrace, fountains, and the temple pavilion beyond.

The southwest corner plays host to a paneled office, library, and bar that is an entertainer's dream. Similarly, the octagonal dining room is an equally perfect backdrop for dinners, drinks, and night-long conversations.

A post shared by Riskin Partners Estate Group (@riskinpartners)

A photo posted by on

The main bedroom suite is one of five around the home and leads into a spacious bedroom and a 'crescendo of closets'. Outside, there is a spa, swimming pool, and guesthouse with another bedroom and private living space. Robert Riskin at Riskin Partners Group holds the listing.

We can't all enjoy a floating shelf as beautiful as the one in this villa, but for our own open-shelving, Ellen's dinnerware set is a natural starting point.

Royal Doulton ED Ellen Degeneres Dinnerware Set – $95.60 on Amazon

Designed by Ellen DeGeneres, this 16-Piece Set is perfect when catering for four.
There's arguably no design style that's as timeless as mid-century modern. Comprising sleek silhouettes, pared-back colors, and natural materials – most notably wood – mid-century modern is all about creating a considered space with simplistic yet elevated pieces.

We're leaning into the mid-century modern interior of the home office space belonging to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, which was designed by interior design studio Clement Design. The room is an elegant and understated space that is elevated with quality crafted furniture items, most notably the curved wooden desk that design experts admire.

A post shared by William Abranowicz (@wabranowicz)

A photo posted by on

'My favorite design element in this mid-century modern home office is the size and scale of the desk,' says interior designer Kathy Kuo. 'The silhouette of the piece is relatively simple but it immediately draws the eye and anchors the room.'

Joanna Frank, interior designer and founder of NYC-based design store Joanna Frank Design Shop also admires the standout desk, explaining: 'A Forme Libre table by Charlotte Perriand really holds its own against the Mark Rothko painting in this home office. Made of solid wood, these tables are works of master craftsmanship and Perriand employed only the best carpenters to select the wood and work its edges.'

'The simplicity is exquisite – perfect for a casual look, yet beautiful beyond expectation. This table can take a beating, and in my opinion, looks better with each hit,' Frank concludes.

To ensure a mid-century-inspired room doesn't feel stark due to the solid furniture, it's key to incorporate soft textiles into the space to add balance and create a more homely feeling. Kuo notes that this has been considered in this home office, explaining:

'The super-plush area rug adds texture and warmth to the clean lines of the space and the accent chairs bring in just a touch of rustic contrast. The classic use of mid-century design features, paired with some unexpected touches really gives this office soul and depth.'

If you love the understated simplicity of this design style as much as we do, we have lots more mid-century modern ideas to help inspire you to champion this look in other rooms throughout your own home.

Starting from scratch, interior design firm Clements Design turned Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi's former Montecito home into a peaceful urban retreat.

Dedicated to creating spaces that replenish energy levels by engaging all five senses, the mother-and-son team of Kathleen and Tommy Clements have beautifully balanced earthiness with understated luxury offered by organic textiles and surfaces.

The studio designs positive, creative interiors that are a pleasure to inhabit. A thought-out design that's mindful of the environment can help recalibrate the mind, nurture the senses and improve everyone's sense of wellbeing. But what is wellness in design? It's all about choices. Happy room ideas are simple and easy to achieve, and most don't even require a large budget.

A post shared by Clements Design (@clementsdesign)

A photo posted by on

Alongside creating a unique spatial experience, similar to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi's home, it is vital to consider how the space will be used over time. Here, the designers have designed a home that will evolve without gathering the kind of clutter that would dilute its ability to destress and rejuvenate.

Ensure an immersive experience. Good design feeds the senses. As organic food nourishes you from within, organic materials, sounds, scents and colors feel all five senses and enhance wellbeing.

Designer Louise Grey of House of Grey believes that the wellness trend is here to stay. 'Embrace imperfection,' she says. 'There is something inherently satisfying about things that are a little "off". With this in mind, we tend to fuse simplicity with the natural imperfection you get with materials and objects that have weathered in time.'

However, if you did want to add a touch of joie de vivre, we recommend introducing bold splashes of color and shine. In this calming space, Clements Design added visual intrigue with a modern entryway bench upholstered in soft-to-the-touch red velvet, an Anish Kapoor art piece, and flourishes of greenery. The result is a well-balanced space that sings rather than shouts.

If you want to recreate an authentic wellbeing sanctuary in your own home, then focus on nature. Organic fibres, textures and materials were once abundant in our lives, but have been replaced by the man-made and chemically produced. Wood, stone, wax- and plant-derived fabrics connect us to the earth and ground us to the natural environment.

The ethnic objets d'art atop the bookshelves add character, but the restrained color palette maintains an overall sense of calm.'

Amanda Scotto, principal designer at AMA Designs & Interiors says about Ellen and Portia's home office idea, 'Ellen’s office speaks to an eclectic design aesthetic with modern, worldly influence through the combination of vintage and new. The room works because of its pared-down forms, streamlined furnishings, and neutral color palette.'

She adds, 'Often full bookcases tend to feel busy. Since the books are grouped together by color, it allows your eye to rest and appreciate the sculptures placed on the shelves and the room as a whole. Overall the room seamlessly integrates old and new to create an inspiring work space.'

Nicholas Kaiko says that Ellen and Portia's fits into the luxurious decor trend. He states: 'This design aligns with the quiet luxury trend in interior design. Quiet luxury emphasizes understated elegance, where the beauty and richness lie in the details, quality, and craftsmanship, rather than overt opulence. It's about creating a space that feels premium and unique, without being loudly extravagant.'

He continues on the quiet luxury trend, saying 'Ellen's office seems to resonate with this trend. The emphasis on quality materials, the neutrality of tones with accents of black, and the ethnically inspired artifacts, all come together to create an ambiance of serenity mixed with sophistication. It works because it offers a sanctuary-like feeling – a place of contemplation, creativity, and comfort without overwhelming the senses. This approach offers a serene yet rich environment, making it a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality for an office setting.'

As we move into 2024, it will be interesting to see how the quiet luxury trend evolves in home offices.
Warm minimalism has been abuzz in the interior industry this year, and similarly to quiet luxury, this simple yet refined aesthetic is surprisingly easy to achieve and doesn't always require a sizeable budget.

Unlike its colder, more clinical sister, a warm minimalist interior promises to exude more character and comfort into a clean and functional space. This was the goal of the interior design firm Clement Design, which was tasked with designing and planning the now-former home of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi. The result is a welcome, calm, and uncluttered space that embodies the quiet luxury trend.

A post shared by Clements Design (@clementsdesign)

A photo posted by on

The easiest way to achieve this look, as Clement Design has done, is to mimic nature at its finest. Inspired by colors from the natural world, warm minimalism adds a gentle and soothing touch to interiors that can be layered with textures and tones to ebb and flow with the seasons.

The key is to keep this look as simple as possible. Source one or two statement pieces of furniture or artwork as the backbone of your room, and pull out colors and shapes for the rest of your decorating ideas.

If in any doubt, start with the flooring. In Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi's home, the dark floor acts as a precursor to the colors and tones used elsewhere. Decorating with brown and taupe helps to ground the room, evoking a sense of calm and tranquility – a wonderful choice for the entrance to a home.

'Using a natural palette is all about adding depth and contrast in different layers and textures,' says Jane Landino, creative head of the studio at Taylor Howes. 'To make a warm minimalist color palette feel designed and considered it’s important to mix and match patterns and shapes, albeit neutral ones, and occasional accent colors.
California casual is the latest interior design trend that has stolen our hearts. This laid-back, yet luxurious aesthetic has gained popularity for its ability to successfully – and beautifully – combine comfort and style.

'Light' and 'airy' are the buzzwords for this refined look, it’s the epitome of cool – think Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi – their stunning former living room hits all the notes for this uber cool trend. There’s very little to dislike about it, it’s lived in but edited – minimalist yet warm.

A post shared by Clements Design (@clementsdesign)

A photo posted by on

But how easy it is to achieve the California casual look in your home? The answer is surprisingly simple – just look to nature.

It is this affinity with nature that has shaped Ellen and Portia's blurring of boundaries within their home. For the interiors, the power duo enlisted the help of Clement Design for their former home in Trousdale.

Clement Design looked to the easy-going decorative style of California for inspiration. The mid-century modern seating pairs beautifully with the curvaceous design, while colors taken from nature – taupe, burnt orange, forest green, and sand – are inspired by the lush, rugged landscape outside.

Natural materials are used throughout and enhance the harmony of the scheme. They are, like everything else in Ellen and Portia's home, perfectly pitched and poised.

Similar living room, designed by Jake Arnold, that utilizes the 'California casual' style to perfection (Image credit: Jake Arnold / Michael P.H Clifford)

Textures and beautiful tactile pieces are really at the heart of this look. Hand-crafted beechwood mirrors – circular is good – earthenware pots, artisanal baskets and unique chairs made by skilled craftsmen will all create the desired effect. Breezy yet grounded, think calm and welcoming with a color palette of ochres, off-whites and dusky tones, like in this room by Clements Design.

This trend shouldn't look pretentious or too streamlined. California Casual style is effortless, or rather that’s how it needs to look. There are no bold color statements with this style, it’s all about subtleties and light, as Lou Graham, founder of Graham & Green explains:

‘California casual style is often described as 'warm minimalism'. Its use of light and texture means that, despite the minimalism of this style, it never feels cold or uncomfortably modern. '

'The way you achieve this is by using neutral wall colors and light wood to bounce sunlight around the room. Incorporating natural textures, such as woven rattan and beautiful geometric rugs, also adds warmth. Plants will bring subtle splashes of color, while a trestle table gives off a vibe of casual elegance.’

Shop the 'California casual' look

There is a definite coastal feel to California Casual, too, and the outdoors and indoors is blurred.
Déjà vu? Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have sold their historic Rancho San Leandro home in Montecito – for the second time.

The former host of the eponymous talk show and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, first purchased the estate for $7 million before flipping it less than a year later to Tinder co-founder Sean Rad for $11 million. However, Ellen and Portia later repurchased the home for $14.3 million before recently selling it to Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd for an impressive $21 million.

Rancho San Leandro is more than one of the world's best homes – it is an iconic site (pictured below) with an eternal legacy in Californian history. Once a 6,830-acre Mexican land grant in present-day Alameda County that Governor Juan Alvarado gave to José Joaquín Estudillo in 1842, the land was developed by the Dominguez family in the mid-1850s – marking one of the state's most significant land grants.

A post shared by Riskin Partners Estate Group (@riskinpartners)

A photo posted by on

Siteline Santa Barbara – who first reported on the sale – shared that Ellen and Portia sold the property to Whitney and her Texas oil heir husband, Michael Herd – who reportedly share an estimated net worth topping $740 million. Dirt adds that the home is next door to Oprah Winfrey’s famed 'Promised Land' estate, which is described as her 'forever home.' Other Montecito residents include Meghan and Harry, Ariana Grande, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Plus, while selling and rebuying a home may seem surprising to some, it is not new to Ellen and Portia. The couple similarly repurchased another Montecito ranch known as The Villa in 2021, shortly after announcing the end of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Rancho San Leandro's exterior is a testament to its heritage – featuring a cobblestone courtyard and a distinct white façade.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have made history in Santa Barbara following the 'priciest residential deal' in South County history.

The comedian, known for her eponymous talk show, and her actress wife spent nearly $70 million on two side-by-side properties in Carpinteria – an exclusive seaside city in south-eastern Santa Barbara. The record-breaking compound includes some of the world's best homes, including a $41.7 million Tuscan farmhouse-style mansion and another $28.2 million property now owned by the couple.

A report from Siteline Santa Barbara describes the sale as the 'priciest residential deal' in the area – notably more than the $63 million Montecito ranch purchased by billionaire Riley Bechtel around two years ago.

According to the report, Ellen's Carpinteria home is actually only half of the original 22-acre Loon Point compound pieced together by a former hedge fund manager Bruce Kovner and his wife, Suzie, in the early 2000s.

The estate, known as Sanctuary at Loon Point, was initially put on the market in October 2021 for $160 million – 'California’s most expensive home.' The listing featured 22 acres of lush landscaping, divided into five parcels – with two distinct estates, Ocean View and Bellevue – connected by a private road. It was set to be the second most expensive home ever sold in California, following only behind Jeff Bezos’ Warner Estate, costing $165 million.

Ellen DeGeneres purchased one of those two homes and one of the landscaped lots available. Therefore, the other mansion and two vacant parcels remain under the Kovners-ownership and may still be available for purchase.

Ellen and Portia already made headlines in the real estate world in 2022 after buying an iconic Richard Neutra-designed home in only November. However, this $70 million sale is arguably their most notable to date. In the past three years, they have also repurchased a ranch they previously sold in Montecito and bought a stylish Robert Skinner-designed mid-century modern home in Beverly Hills.

The Carpinteria estate has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms over 9,000 square feet of living space.
Ellen DeGeneres has listed a quaint cottage in Montecito – one of the many properties owned by the house flipper and her wife – for $6 million.

The comedian and host of her eponymously named talk show is best known for her TV appearances, but she is also a force in the real estate industry, alongside her wife Portia de Rossi. Together, the couple have acquired, decorated and resold some of the most exclusive properties in the US, and some of the world's best homes.

Earlier this week, the couple bought an iconic Richard Neutra-designed home in Bel Air, not long after famously buying back a ranch they previously sold in Montecito, the same affluent town where they have listed this craftsman style cottage for $5.85 million.
